For as long as there have been humans, there has been garbage. No matter where we go, we leave our trash behind – and, since the late 1950s, that includes space. Human nature? It sure seems like it. Is it also human nature to let garbage pile up until the cost of removing it is exorbitant? The price the European Space Agency just announced it will pay for the removal of one piece of space garbage may confirm that conjecture. How much?

“Imagine how dangerous sailing the high seas would be if all the ships ever lost in history were still drifting on top of the water. That is the current situation in orbit, and it cannot be allowed to continue.”

In the press release announcing the singular space garbage removal project, ESA Director General Jan Woerner tries to justify the cost with an interesting mental picture of all of history’s shipwrecks floating on the surface of the oceans, lakes and rivers. While the actual total number of boards and bits of bows is impossible to estimate, the amount of similar spacecraft, satellite and rocket debris in space isn’t. Various estimate based on history and tracking data put the number of space objects bigger than 10 cm (4 inches) at around 29,000, about 900,000 pieces of debris 1–10 cm and more than 128 million bits of debris smaller than 1 cm (0.4 in). That includes almost 2,000 live satellites and 3,000 dead ones – numbers increasing daily with people like Elon Musk filling the atmosphere with tiny communications satellites.

One proposed consequence of all that space junk is the Kessler syndrome (proposed in 1978 by NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler) where the density of debris in low Earth orbit (LEO) is high enough that even just one collision between objects could cause a cascade of collisions, making space a dangerous place for satellites, rockets and human space travelers. Can anything be done or is it too late … or too costly?

“NASA and ESA studies show that the only way to stabilise the orbital environment is to actively remove large debris items. Accordingly we will be continuing our development of essential guidance, navigation and control technologies and rendezvous and capture methods through a new project called Active Debris Removal/ In-Orbit Servicing – ADRIOS. The results will be applied to ClearSpace-1. This new mission, implemented by an ESA project team, will allow us to demonstrate these technologies, achieving a world first in the process.”

After a competitive bidding process, the Swiss company ClearSpace, based at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) research institute, was awarded the contract to send a ship to pick up one piece of space junk – the upper stage of an ESA rocket launched in 2013 weighing 100 kg (220 pounds) – and drag it down into the atmosphere until but the space garbage truck and its payload burn up. All of this one-time-only garbage removal – scheduled to occur in 2025 — for the low, low price of … $110 million (100 million euros)!

Is this skyway robbery?

Will it be worth it? Will the cost come down? Is there any way to reduce space debris from occurring in the first place? Elon Musk is using reusable rockets – is that enough of a trade-off for thousands of satellites?

One of the most pressing new areas of discovery of recent times is that of finding life outside of this ball of rock we inhabit. While life may exist somewhere out in the cosmos, certainly one of the most unusual of places one would expect to find it is on our life-giving sun. Looking at it from our current knowledge of the sun, it seems like the idea of any sort of life as we know it existing there is absurd. After all, this is a burning, immensely hot mass with surface temperatures sitting at around 5500ºC (nearly 10,000ºF), which is so hot that molecules simply cannot maintain any state of integrity there, with no solid matter possible and only energy existing here in its elemental, rawest form. There is simply nothing in this environment remotely conducive to life as we know it, and indeed it is about the most hostile environment one could possibly imagine, completely and totally inhospitable to life. Yet, this has not stopped people over the centuries from speculating on the possibilities of creatures inhabiting this forbidding realm.

The possibility of life on the sun has long captured the imagination and been a recurring feature of science fiction. Perhaps the most famous example of this was Arthur C. Clarke’s story Out of the Sun, in which he describes the discovery of plasma based lifeforms on the surface of the sun, which are discovered by some very perplexed astronomers as they observe the roiling surface of our star from their observatory on the planet Mercury. In the story the creature that is found has been somehow regurgitated from the center of the sun and expelled out into the void of space, where it dies. One excerpt from the story reads:

We were looking at what seemed to be a translucent oval, its interior laced with a network of almost invisible lines. Where the lines crossed there appeared to be tiny, pulsing nodes of light… What we were seeing was impossible, yet the evidence was there before our eyes. We were looking at life, where no life could exist. The eruption had hurled the thing out of its normal environment, deep down in the flaming atmosphere of the sun.

Other writers have also flirted with the idea life living on the sun or within other stars as well, such as Charles Harness in his 1955 book Paradox Men, which mentions plasma creatures living on the sun, as well as David Brin in his book Sundiver (1980), Robert Forward in his novel “Dragon’s Egg, about an actual technological civilization on a neutron star, Hal Clement in his short story Proof, and Stephen Baxter, who wrote of lifeforms existing in stars in his book Ring, in which they are referred to as “photino birds.” In every case, the hypothetical creatures mentioned are described as being able to survive in these environments due to being fundamentally different in form to what we typically think of life as taking, that of carbon based life, instead being energy or plasma based organisms, which exist in a sort of non-corporeal form. Astronomer and co-founder of SETI, Frank Drake, has explained the gist of this thusly:

One can imagine life evolving on a neutron star in the same way as life evolved on Earth. However, the nuclei making up the biological matter would not have electrons bound to them, as they do on Earth. Instead, the chemistry producing life depends on nuclear reactions, mediated by the strong force of the nuclei and not on the electromagnetic force responsible for terrestrial chemistry. An exchange of neutrons would bind the nuclei into “nuclear molecules” in the same way as the exchange of electrons binds atoms into normal molecules. We do not know whether bonding through neutrons would really lead to complex nuclear molecules at these high gravities, but for the sake of telling a story, I assume that they do.

Another rather intriguing explanation was offered up on the site Quora, from a Thomas Jolly, M.S. Astronautical Engineering, West Coast University, who explains:

The idea behind plasma creatures living on the sun is that they exist not from our known chemistry and periodic table, but from stable hot magnetic plasma loops of various sorts that act like atoms to them. They would likely be much larger creatures (like miles wide) since each of their “magnetic particles” would contain millions or trillions of what we think of as atoms and ions. Chances are good that they would have no clue that atoms even existed. Their scientific instruments would only resolve down to their smallest stable magnetic loop. We have no idea what stable forms matter may take outside of our own domain; any of these could produce some weird form of its own chemistry, evolving to a self-reproducing organism. There might be some tenuous gaseous magnetic forms living within the confines of nebulae; we might fly right through their 1000-kilometer wide bodies in our space ships without knowing they are there.

The outlandish idea has been entertained as mostly a sort of thought experiment by scientists over the years, with even some research claiming to show that under certain conditions blobs of plasma can grow, replicate, and even exhibit cell-like structures and show behavior that is very life-like in nature, such as the 2003 studies carried out by researcher Mircea Sanduloviciu and his team at Cuza University in Romania. It is all mostly pure speculation, but in recent years there has been the idea that life could in fact have a much broader definition well outside our traditional carbon based, cell-based idea of it. It is all still mostly in the world of science fiction, but that doesn’t mean that there have never been those who have seriously considered solar lifeforms, and indeed there have been some pretty wild ideas about creatures on the sun going all the way back to the 18th century.

The notion that the sun might be host to lifeforms was famously suggested back in 1785 by famed astronomer William Herschel, who happens to have been the man to have discovered Uranus. His idea revolved around a rather crude knowledge of our star at the time, the once popular theory that the sun spot that could be observed through telescopes were in fact openings in “the atmosphere” of the sun that showed the land below, or that they were massive mountains poking through. The common notion at the time was that the sun was more or less like just another terrestrial planet, albeit a very hot one covered in fire, and Herschel completely subscribed to this, even going as far as to calculate how high these mountains were (334 miles high) and coming up with the process by which the sun had formed its luminous atmosphere, and to him this was just another planet, which while certainly unique, wasn’t beyond the ability to harbor life. Herschel would say of this:

The Sun appears to be nothing else than a very eminent, large, and lucid planet. Its similarity to the other globes of the solar system leads us to suppose that it is most probably inhabited by beings whose organs are adapted to the peculiar circumstances of that vast globe.

Herschel even had a slew of complicated hypotheses on how these hypothetical lifeforms kept from being burned to a crisp, essentially boiling down to because an opaque layer of clouds below these organisms was able to bounce the light of the sun’s atmosphere into space and thus protect them from being immolated. While Herschel’s ideas were largely met with skepticism and raised eyebrows by other scientists, the fact that he was such a respected astronomer meant that they stubbornly stayed around for a shockingly long amount of time, and these notions were still being entertained well into the 1800s, not being really put to rest until it was found that the sun was not a planet, but rather a flaming ball of hydrogen and helium gas. So does the sun harbor life? Probably not. Yet, it is compelling that we have been entertaining this notion for many years, and continue to do so to this day. Although the sun is more likely than not devoid of any light, the speculation concerning how life could exist there and how it might in other similar environments leads the way in delving into alternate hypotheses on how life works, and might illuminate the fact that it might not be so narrowly defined as has traditionally been thought. It helps us think outside of the box, and that is often not a bad thing at all.

A very unique royal bust of King Ramses II has been unearthed during an Egyptian archaeological mission from the Ministry of Antiquities. Archaeologists discovered the statue on private land in Mit Rahina, Egypt. The land owner had been arrested for performing illegal excavations on the land which is located near the Temple of Ptah – not far from the Pyramids of Giza.

Ramses II (also known as “Ozymandias” and “Ramesses the Great”) ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 B.C. He was the third pharaoh of Egypt’s 19^th Dynasty. Ramses II was known for his impressive building programs with Abu Simbel being one of his greatest achievements. Abu Simbel consists of two temples with the smaller one being dedicated to his wife, Queen Nefertari.

The unique bust was made from red granite and showed the king wearing a wig and a crown with the symbol “Ka” which symbolizes power, life force, and spirit. On the back pillar, his name is engraved as “Nakht Mari Maat” which translates to “strong bull”. The statue is 105 cm tall (approximately three and a half feet) by 55 cm wide and 45 cm thick.

Mostafa Waziri, who is the secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, stated that the statue is extremely rare because it’s the only ever “Ka” statue found that was made from granite. The only other one that was similar to it was made from wood and was owned by the 13^th Dynasty King Hor Awibre – it is currently on display at the Egyptian Museum which is located in Cairo. Waziri explained that the statue was “intended to provide a resting place for the Ka (life-force or spirit) of the person after death.”

Ramses II

In addition to the bust, several large blocks made from red granite and limestone were also found. The blocks were engraved with different scenes depicting Ramses II during the Heb-Seb religious ritual. This suggests that the blocks could possibly belong to the Temple of Ptah. It’s still unclear as to when the statue and the blocks were originally created. Pictures of the bust as well as one of the blocks can be seen here.

The bust and the blocks were brought to Mit Rahina open air museum where they will be restored. Excavations will continue at the site where they were unearthed.

Ancient Structure With 50 Meter Doorway To Alien Base Below Volcano, Video, UFO Sighting News.

I was watching the live cam to see if I could catch a UFO shooting around or into it again. I've recorded over a dozen objects on this cam and thought I might have some luck today. I did...but instead of a flying object I found a giant structure hundreds of meters tall. It had a square doorway that was close to 60 meters across! The structure was not there and then the sun hit it perfectly and there it was! Maybe its a trick of the eye, an illusion of some sort, but I swear this looks like a giant entrances into an underground alien abase. A base I have been talking about for almost ten years. If so...then we found an easy way to get to that base...but we do need a way to break through that huge door.

Semi Transparent UFO Seen Outside Of Shuttle Discovery, Video, UFO Sighting News.

In this never before seen photo, I found a strange object. It was taken from the STS39 Shuttle Discovery mission while they were in orbit. The object looks semi transparent with a darker triangle within it. I checked the photos before and after this one, but did not find the anomaly in any of them. Only one photo had this UFO in it. I have never seen a satellite like this before and there is no payload in the bay that would match such an strange object. Even NASA didn't notice it in the photo and only wrote "cumulous clouds." Its unidentified...its flying...and it sure as heck is an object. Thats a UFO.

Astronomers See Stars Slinging Comets at Earth for the First Time

Stars and comets make unlikely dance partners. Their gravitational partnership is one that astronomers have long suspected but have never seen — until now. For the first time, a Polish group has identified two nearby stars that seem to have plucked up their icy partners, swinging them into orbits around our sun. 

The astronomers found the stellar duo after studying the movements of over 600 stars that came within 13 light-years of the sun. The new findings validate a theory born more than a half-century ago, and in doing so have also shown just how rare these stellar dances can be. 

Out on the far edge of the solar system, hanging like wallflowers around the planetary dance floor, is the Oort Cloud. This icy group of objects were left over after the formation of the solar system, creating a giant shell enveloping our home system that extends from 66 times the distance to Neptune to 9.23 trillion miles (14.9 trillion kilometers) away from the sun. Astronomers think the Oort Cloud is a reservoir for long-period comets — those that take more than 200 years to orbit the sun. Comet Hale-Bopp, which has a 2,500-year orbit, is one of the most famous of these long-period comets.

Since the cloud's existence was first proposed by Jan Oort in the 1950s, astronomers have suspected that every so often, a passing star might be able to pick up an object and send it swinging on a wild ride through our solar system; that ride would bring some of those comets streaming through the night sky for us to marvel at. Astronomers have spent years trying to find proof of these stellar dances, but none had been conclusively shown until now. 

A new paper, accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and published on the preprint database arXiv, describes how astronomers calculated the paths of nearly 650 stars, which they compared with the orbits of over 270 long-period comets. The study used a catalogue from the Gaia spacecraft, which has measurements for some 1.7 billion astronomical objects, along with surveys like Pan-STARRS, which looks for asteroids, comets and other small bodies in our solar system. 

They created models for the star-comet pairs to rewind and replay their history. The astronomers then would "remove" a star from their model to see if that significantly changed the partner comet's orbit. If it did, the astronomers would know that the stars had tangoed with the comets.

"In our study, we discovered only two cases in which this actually happened, and yet, we observe dozens of comets every year," lead study author Rita Wysoczańska, an astronomer at the Institute Astronomical Observatory at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland, told Live Science. "At this moment, we can say that the mechanism proposed by Oort is not sufficient enough to generate all comets we observe."

It's likely that the collective gravitational force of more distant stars can boost comets into long-period orbits. And once a comet enters the solar system, it can be further perturbed by the planets therein.

"I think, in general, it is hard to associate a particular comet with a particular star," said Coryn Bailer-Jones, an astronomer at the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany, who was not involved with the new study. "We must also consider the contribution of the galactic background potential, which is essentially the influence of all the other much more distant, but also much more numerous, stars in the galaxy." 

Creating computer models to look at all of those influences, something called a multibody model, is a much more complex and computationally intensive task. 

Additionally, information doesn't yet exist for every star. With current data, the astronomers had to rely on estimates for some of the stellar masses and movements. The astronomers hope that a future data release of the stellar survey they used can help shed more light on comet-star interactions.

Three Possible Reasons Why Aliens Abduct Humans

As I write this post, I keep reminding myself that lots of perfectly sane and accomplished individuals have experienced a UFO sighting and/or alien encounter. Actually, many have had numerous experiences. Truth is, even though I count myself among the latter group, I’m not going to pretend I have every answer to every universal question ever asked. I don’t. But from my perspective, one thing is for certain: we are most definitely not alone. And frankly, considering the destructive technologies numerous countries have in their arsenals, I for one, am grateful to know this experientially.

At first blush, my own ET experiences felt like something out of a sci-fi/horror film. The first act being something like, the protagonist experiences victimization at the hands of Grey aliens, leading to alienation from those around her. But here’s the thing. The longer I’ve sat with this, the more it seems that my overall experiences were intended to accomplish several things, and not all of them were centered on little ol’ me.

So what was the alien agenda?

First of all, I tend to think there is definitely something going on with DNA extraction. Does taking my DNA necessarily mean it is being used for nefarious purposes? No. However, it does not disprove this popular theory, either. Since I personally believe in the Twelve Spiritual Laws of the Universe, I’m going to go on a limb and suggest that the outcome from these purported DNA extractions will ultimately prove to be positive. Who knows, maybe a stronger and smarter species will evolve from this genetic experimentation/manipulation. Maybe this will serve to adapt humankind to Earth’s changing environment, another planet’s environment, or advanced interstellar travel.

Secondly, the fact that some experiencers, such as myself, recall alien encounters occurring all the way back to early childhood, suggests that maybe we are supposed to remember. At least, just enough. In my case, I remember not only bits and pieces of what happened immediately before and during the abduction, I recall reporting the experience to my mother. Of course she had no way of knowing the three monsters in my bedroom were in fact, small Grey aliens. Nor could she have predicted that I did my very best every night to not fall asleep, only to eventually go through a similar experience a few weeks later.

This begs the question, why would aliens want me to remember parts of this and other experiences? Simply put, I suspect it may serve as a way to quietly accomplish what the U.S. government was unwilling or unable to do. That being full disclosure about the fact that we are not alone. Additionally, it's very likely that our cosmic cousins want us to abolish our nuclear technologies and other WMDs, take care of one another - both locally and globally, and clean up/ learn to live in harmony with our beautiful planet.

Thirdly, they may have wanted to build a relationship over time with certain abductees, so they would eventually function as starseeds, lightworkers or both. Starseeds spread divine light by seeding energy into new systems. They are beings who exist here on earth in a human body, but their soul may have originated from somewhere else, (i.e. another planet, star system, galaxy, dimension or even a different (parallel) universe). On the other hand, a lightworker is a person who connects to the inter-dimensional energies around Earth and is psychic and highly intuitive. Lightworkers simply know what other people are thinking, feeling, or need in order to heal.

To be honest, I am slightly psychic and highly intuitive, but I have always felt that I came from somewhere else. This suggests that I might be both a starseed and a lightworker, but of course, only time will tell.

University deletes bizarre press release that claimed alien insects live on Mars

The claim that extraterrestrial beasties are living on Mars always sounded too good to be true.

Now the university which published a press release which alleged insects had been spotted on Mars has performed a dramatic u-turn.

Last week, Professor Emeritus William Romoser, an entomologist from Ohio University, said images captured by Nasa’s Mars rovers clearly show ‘fossilised and living creatures’ on the Red Planet’s surface.

‘There has been and still is life on Mars,’ Romoser said in a press release which has now been deleted from the Ohio University website as well as wire services which distribute releases to journalists.

We found a poster of his research online, which is still available to read, which suggested Nasa is already ‘acquainted with Martian insect- and reptile-like creatures’ which live on Mars.

‘It appears that the “Red Planet” enjoys a surprising abundance of higher life forms,’ the paper continued.

The research analysed images sent back to Earth by the Mars Rover and made several astonishing allegations.

It suggested that creatures resembling ‘bees’ lived on Mars as well as reptile-like animals which preyed on them.

‘The insect-like fauna observed appeared to be sheltering/nesting in caves, in burrows beneath the surface, and in specialized structures,’ the paper continued.

Rosomer’s claims made international headlines last week.

‘There is apparent diversity among the Martian insect-like fauna which display many features similar to Terran insects that are interpreted as advanced groups – for example, the presence of wings, wing flexion, agile gliding/flight, and variously structured leg elements.’

He said the rovers have snapped pictures which ‘clearly depict the insect- and reptile-like forms’.

The scientist even suggested one image shows a living insect ‘in a steep dive before pulling up just before hitting the ground’.

‘Once a clear image of a given form was identified and described, it was useful in facilitating recognition of other less clear, but none-the-less valid, images of the same basic form,’ Romoser said.

‘An exoskeleton and jointed appendages are sufficient to establish identification as an arthropod. Three body regions, a single pair of antennae, and six legs are traditionally sufficient to establish identification as “insect” on Earth.

‘These characteristics should likewise be valid to identify an organism on Mars as insect-like. On these bases, arthropodan, insect-like forms can be seen in the Mars rover photos.’

Romoser said the Martian ‘creatures’ loosely resemble bumblebees or carpenter bees on Earth.

He suggested the ‘bees’ appearing to shelter or nest in caves and claimed other images show a fossilized creature that resembles a snake.

Romoser was an entomology professor at Ohio University for 45 years and co-founded its Tropical Disease Institute. He also spent nearly 20 years as a visiting vector-borne disease researcher at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Between 1973 and 1998, Romoser authored and co-authored four editions of the widely-used textbook called ‘The Science of Entomology’.

Romoser noted that ‘interpretations of insect- and reptile-like creatures he described may change in the future as knowledge of life on Mars evolves, but that the sheer volume of evidence is compelling’.

‘The presence of higher metazoan organisms on Mars implies the presence of nutrient/energy sources and processes, food chains and webs, and water as elements functioning in a viable, if extreme, ecological setting sufficient to sustain life,’ he said.

‘I have observed instances suggestive of standing water or small water courses with evident meander and with the expected blurring of small submerged rocks, larger emergent rocks at the atmosphere/water interface, a moist bank area, and a drier area beyond the moist area. Water on Mars has been reported a number of times, including surface water detected by instrumentation on Viking, Pathfinder, Phoenix, and Curiosity.

‘The evidence of life on Mars presented here provides a strong basis for many additional important biological as well as social and political questions,” he added. It also represents a solid justification for further study.’

University Deletes Bizarre Press Release of Alien Insects Living on Mars

• In a press release on the Ohio University website earlier in November, Professor Emeritus William Romoser said that after analyzing images captured by NASA’s Mars rovers, the images clearly showed ‘fossilized and living creatures’ on the Red Planet’s surface. Romoser added, “There has been and still is life on Mars.” A poster of his research online suggested NASA is already ‘acquainted with Martian insect- and reptile-like creatures’ which live on Mars. That press release and the wire service that released it have now been deleted from the university website.
• Before being deleted, Romoser’s paper took the opportunity to reveal that ‘the “Red Planet” enjoys a surprising abundance of higher life forms’, including creatures resembling ‘bumblebees or carpenter bees’ as well as reptile-like animals which preyed on them. ‘The insect-like fauna observed appeared to be sheltering/nesting in caves, in burrows beneath the surface, and in specialized structures,’ Romoser wrote. ‘Other images show a fossilized creature that resembles a snake.’ ‘Once a clear image of a given form was identified and described, it was useful in facilitating recognition of other less clear, but none-the-less valid, images of the same basic form,’ said Romoser.
• Romoser has been an entomology professor at Ohio University for 45 years. He also spent nearly 20 years as a vector-borne disease researcher at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Between 1973 and 1998, Romoser authored and co-authored four editions of the widely-used textbook called ‘The Science of Entomology’. Romoser said that ‘interpretations of insect- and reptile-like creatures he described may change in the future as knowledge of life on Mars evolves, but that the sheer volume of evidence is compelling’. ‘The presence of higher metazoan organisms on Mars implies the presence of nutrient/energy sources and processes, food chains and webs, and water as elements functioning in a viable, if extreme, ecological setting sufficient to sustain life.’

Water on Mars, including surface water, has been detected by instrumentation on the Viking, Pathfinder, Phoenix, and Curiosity rovers. ‘The evidence of life on Mars presented here provides a strong… justification for further study.’

The claim that extraterrestrial beasties are living on Mars always sounded too good to be true. Now the university which published a press release

which alleged insects had been spotted on Mars has performed a dramatic u-turn. Last week, Professor Emeritus William Romoser, an entomologist from Ohio University, said images captured by Nasa’s Mars rovers clearly show ‘fossilised and living creatures’ on the Red Planet’s surface. ‘There has been and still is life on Mars,’ Romoser said in a press release which has now been deleted from the Ohio University website as well as wire services which distribute releases to journalists. We found a poster of his research online, which is still available to read, which suggested Nasa is already ‘acquainted with Martian insect- and reptile-like creatures’ which live on Mars.

‘It appears that the “Red Planet” enjoys a surprising abundance of higher life forms,’ the paper continued. The research analysed images sent back to Earth by the Mars Rover and made several astonishing allegations. It suggested that creatures resembling ‘bees’ lived on Mars as well as reptile-like animals which preyed on them. ‘The insect-like fauna observed appeared to be sheltering/nesting in caves, in burrows beneath the surface, and in specialized structures,’ the paper continued. Rosomer’s claims made international headlines last week.

NASA Photo Captures Strange Alien Vessel In Earth’s Orbit, UFO Expert Claims

AUFO expert claimed that NASA’s photo of the Moon accidentally showed a strange-looking alien spacecraft hovering in low-Earth orbit. According to the expert, the alleged UFO in the photo is a rare one due to its shape.

The strange object was spotted by Scott Waring of the UFO-centered blog ET Data Base. He came across the object in a photo featured in the website Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth, which houses a collection of images taken during NASA’s space missions.

The particular photo that Waring focused on was taken during the STS-39 mission of the Space Shuttle Discovery, which was launched on April 28, 1991. The main objective of the mission was to conduct payload experiments for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Shortly after leaving Earth, the mission’s astronauts took a photo of the Moon from space. In the photo, the Moon can be seen in the center with a portion of Earth right below it.

In the source website, parts of the photo can be enlarged by moving the cursor over it. As noted by Waring, placing the cursor near the lower right-hand corner of the photo would reveal an image of a strange object just outside Earth.

Unlike other UFOs, the object in the photo has a very strange shape and resembles a lightning bolt. According to Waring, he had never seen an alien vessel shaped like that before.

“I was searching through NASA archive photo and saw this beautiful moon photo taken from the Shuttle Discovery,” Waring wrote on a blog post. “I didn't think I would find anything at the time, just thought it was a beautiful photo. I enlarged it and put it into autofocus and found something amazing. There was a black lightning bolt UFO in the lower right-hand corner of the photo. I have never ever reported a UFO of this shape. It's very rare and unlike anything I had come to expect.”

Although Waring strongly believes that the object is a UFO that’s closely monitoring Earth, there could be a natural explanation behind it. Based on the image, it is possible that the object’s appearance was caused by a flaw in the photo.

Thousands of Government UFO Reports Now Available at Canadian University

The attack set Michalak's shirt and hat ablaze, and left him with first-degree burns on his stomach that echoed the ship's grid-like pattern. A hospital in Winnipeg treated his burns, which later rose into welts, and he suffered headaches, diarrhea and blackouts for several weeks after. Michalak relayed the incident to both U.S. and Canadian authorities, and he eventually completed a physical and psychological evaluation at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. The clinic determined that Michalak was of sound mind and not hallucinating. 

Years later, a twisted piece of metal was recovered from the alleged Falcon Lake landing site. Tests showed the metal to be highly radioactive. To this day, neither the Canadian nor U.S. military has been able to explain the event.

8 Mysterious Underwater Ruins of Lost Civilizations

Tales and myths of lost civilizations have been told since the dawn of time. The most famous is the story of Atlantis: a quasi-mythical city that sunk beneath the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Whether the story is true or not, it fills people with intrigue.

Today, archaeologists have discovered there are many sunken cities around the globe. Underwater excavations are difficult and expensive, so these investigations have only recently revealed many lost civilizations.

Around the planet, there are many not so mythical cities found underwater. Some can be traced back through history, yet many remain mysterious and continue to spark people’s imagination as candidates for lost civilizations.

Here are 8 underwater cities of lost civilizations you may not have heard of:

1) Ancient Greece: the sunken city of Pavlopetri.

Found in the south of modern-day Greece is the sunken city of Pavlopetri. Dating back 5000 years it is now more than four meters underwater and is the first lost city to be found around Greece. It is thought to have sunk around 1000BC due to an earthquake that shifted the land around many of the Greek islands.

From what has been so far uncovered at the site, the ancient cities layout resembles many modern-day cities. Well-designed roads, houses, gardens, temples, complex water management systems, and huge buildings have so far been found.

The entire city is so far known to be at least 80,000 square meters in size, with a vast open plaza in the center of these sunken ruins

2) Yonaguni Jima, The Japanese Atlantis.

The Island of Yonaguni is just miles away from Taiwan and is the last of the Ryukyu islands. It is the westernmost inhabited Japanese island. During the ice age, Yonaguni Island was part of the Chinese mainland. Then due to rising oceans and land shifts, it became one of the many islands that were spread out in between China and Japan. It was once part of the Ryukyu Kingdom until it was overtaken by Japan.

Although these ruins have never been properly researched, many claims are surrounding its origins and dating. These vary from between 10,000 to 5,000 years old. Controversy surrounds the validity of the sunken city, which according to some researchers, was once home to the legendary Jomon civilization that flourished in ancient Japan from around 12,000 to 300BC. It was this civilization that has some of the oldest found forms of pottery.

Regardless of their validity, the ruins have been submerged for at least two thousand years, meaning whatever was once there, would be extremely degraded.

Some geologists argue the formations found at Yonaguni Jima are naturally occurring. They comprise of many 90-degree angles that appear as manmade steps and passageways, as well as a few circular holes carved in stones around the site.

Although these sorts of formations are found in nature, the high amount in such close proximity has inspired many to investigate the mysterious underwater ruins in search of a lost civilization.

3) The Submerged castle in Lake Van, Turkey.

Sitting below the waters of the Middle-East’s second largest lake is a 3000-year-old castle. Thought to be the remains of the ancient Urartu civilization, the castle is around a kilometer in length, with walls of up to four meters tall.

This lost civilization once thrived in modern-day Turkey, Iran, and Armenia. Although much of the ruins are under the lake, there are still remnants that can be seen by the lakes edges.

4) Mahabalipuram, India

The sunken ruins of Mahabalipuram lie between 6-8 meters below the current sea level off the coast of South Eastern India. Local folklore long spoke of the existence of ancient ruins, although was mainly confined to fishermen’s tales and thought of as myth.

However, when a tsunami devastated much of Asia in 2004, it revealed that the stories of the lost civilization were true after all.

As the waters receded around 500 meters before the tsunami hit, they pulled away silt and sand that had built up around the monuments that were until then buried at sea.

Since then, there has been a much more serious attempt in researching these sunken ruins.

5) Heracleion, Egypt. The Lost City of Cleopatra.

Submerged for at least 1600 years, the lost city of Cleopatra has been found off the shores of Alexandria in Egypt. Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh of ancient Egypt, and it was thought that her city was lost to rising seas as a consequence of an earthquake and resulting tidal waves. Pristine statues, and temples have been discovered at the site so far, many of which are in excellent condition.

Statues of Isis, a sphinx, and large red granite columns, as well as foundations of a palace, are among the relics found at the site. Around 20,000 objects have been located in the lost underwater city.

One object recovered from the water is a 2,000-year-old stone figurine of Cleopatra III: a Ptolemaic queen, but depicted as the Egyptian goddess Isis and sculpted in a style that combines both Egyptian and Greek aesthetics.

The findings revealed that Thonis (Egyptian) and Heracleion (Greek) were the same cities.

Cleopatra reigned during the times of the Ptolemaic dynasty, which ruled over Egypt from around 305bc to 30bc. 

6) The Sunken City of Olous, Crete.

The island of Crete is bordered by an ancient Sunken Minoan City.

What was once part of the Minoan civilization, Olous is an underwater city that was once home to over 40,000 people. Between the 5^th and 2^nd century BC, Olous is thought to have reached its peak, making up one of around 100 Minoan cities that thrived around ancient Crete.

Although no one knows exactly what happened to Olous, it is thought that it gradually submerged due to rising sea levels. It is interesting to note that the east coast of Crete is sinking into the sea, while the west coast is rising slowly.

Crete is slowly but surely migrating west. This natural phenomenon started around the 4^th century AD and could have been responsible for causing Olous to sink.

7) The Ancient Underwater City in Fuxian Lake, China

Fuxian Lake is one of the most intriguing underwater cities ever found. Many stories have emerged from this lake about a lost city dating back thousands of years. There isn’t too much written about the excavations, but what is known is there have been many findings dating back into antiquity.

There are many legends in the Yunnan Province (which is located in southwest China) that talk about sunken cities.

One of the ancient cities that researchers first believed to be at the bottom of the lake was the city of Yuyuan. The city was occupied from around 590-900AD and supposedly sunk to the bottom of the sea.

However, researchers have since concluded that the underwater city could not be that of Yuyuan as all artifacts have so far been made of stone, and not clay, which Yuyuan was almost entirely made from.

In 2001, a team of marine archaeologists decided to explore the lake and reported seeing pyramid-like structures as well as other buildings and stone objects. They claim the ruins are over 2000 years old and belong to the lost civilization known as the Dian Kingdom.

There are many varying stories about these underwater ruins. Further research is required to confirm its origin.

8) Port Royal, Jamaica’s lost city

Up until 1692, Port Royal was one of the most important trading ports of the New World. It wasn’t for the faint-hearted though, with it being known across the world as the ‘wickedest city on earth.’

An earthquake and resulting tsunami brought the Jamaican city to its end, submerging it beneath the sea. The ruins are still accessible today, with travelers able to dive and explore the lost city.

Conclusion:

The human origin story is littered with sunken cities and lost ancient civilizations.

Today underwater archeological research may reveal an entirely new chapter our story.

NASA Spacecraft Spies Huge New Storm on Jupiter After Death-Dodging Maneuver

Juno has now spotted seven giant cyclones near Jupiter's south pole.

SAN FRANCISCO — NASA's Juno probe discovered a giant new storm swirling near Jupiter's south pole last month, a few weeks after pulling off a dramatic death-dodging maneuver.

Juno spied the newfound maelstrom, which is about as wide as Texas, on Nov. 3, during its most recent close flyby of Jupiter. The storm joins a family of six other cyclones in Jupiter's south polar region, which Juno had spotted on previous passes by the gas giant. (Those encounters also revealed nine cyclones near Jupiter's north pole, by the way.)

The southern tempests are arrayed in a strikingly regular fashion. Previously, five of them had formed a pentagon around a central storm, which is as wide as the continental United States. With the new addition, that girdling structure is now a hexagon.

"These cyclones are new weather phenomena that have not been seen or predicted before," Cheng Li, a Juno scientist from the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement yesterday (Dec. 12).

"Nature is revealing new physics regarding fluid motions and how giant planet atmospheres work," he added. "We are beginning to grasp it through observations and computer simulations. Future Juno flybys will help us further refine our understanding by revealing how the cyclones evolve over time."

Juno orbits Jupiter on a highly elliptical path every 53 Earth days, gathering most of its data when it comes closest to the giant planet. And those encounters are quite close indeed: During the Nov. 3 pass, the 22nd science flyby of Juno's $1.1 billion mission, the probe skimmed a mere 2,175 miles (3,500 kilometers) above Jupiter's cloud tops, NASA officials said.

But it took some fancy flying to make sure Juno survived the experience. The mission team determined that the probe's trajectory would take Juno into Jupiter's shadow for 12 hours on Nov. 3. And that likely would've been a death sentence for the solar-powered probe.

"We would've gotten cold. Really, really cold," Juno project scientist Steve Levin, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, said during a press conference here yesterday at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), where the team announced the new results.

But the navigation team at JPL came up with a solution: "jumping Jupiter's shadow." On Sept. 30, Juno's handlers directed the solar-powered probe to fire its small reaction-control engines in pulses for 10.5 hours. This pushed the probe's path steadily outward — and, ultimately, out of the shadow path altogether, Levin explained.

"Without that maneuver, without the creative genius of the folks at JPL on the navigation team, we wouldn't have the beautiful data that we have to show you today," he said. 

Juno launched in 2011 and arrived in orbit around Jupiter on July 4, 2016. The spacecraft is studying  Jupiter's composition and gravitational and magnetic fields, among other things. The data Juno is gathering should help researchers better understand how Jupiter — and, by extension, the solar system — formed and evolved, mission team members have said.

The initial mission plan called for Juno to tighten its science orbit considerably, down to 14 Earth days. But the team called off the engine burns that would have achieved this reduction after discovering issues with the probe's fuel-delivery system. So, Juno will stay in the 53-day orbit for the duration of its mission, which currently goes through July 2021.

Mysterious object thought to be UFO, actually Rocket Lab launch

A mysterious object in the sky on Friday evening had many North Islanders questioning whether they've spotted a UFO.

One Napier resident told the Herald her husband was out fishing with his friends when he spotted the wired light before it quickly vanished.

Dozens of people, including those posting on a Whangamata community Facebook page, were convinced it was a UFO.

"Definitely a UFO," one person commented.

Turns out it was Rocket Lab launching its 10th Electron rocket from Mahia Peninsula shortly before 9.20pm.

The mission - named Running Out Of Fingers - had seven satellites for commercial "ride-share" customers on board.

Rocket Lab CEO and founder Peter Beck said it was a "significant milestone" given its 100 per cent success rate at getting 47 satellites into space on its "ride-share" missions.

"Not only is this 10th mission a significant milestone launch for us, but our first guided stage re-entry was a complete success.

"The stage made it through the harsh re-entry environment intact, which is an outstanding result for a first test of our recovery systems.

"It's a huge testament to the relentless drive and commitment of our team that we've reached 10 flights in just our second year of commercial launches," Beck said.

Rocket Lab's next mission will take place within the first weeks of 2020.

Earth's magnetic north is shifting at an 'unprecedented' rate of 30 miles a year - throwing satellite positioning data and navigation systems off course

The Earth's magnetic North Pole is travelling at an unprecedented rate and is picking up speed as it moves towards Siberia, according to new satellite data.

The magnetic North Pole is the wandering point on the surface of Earth's Northern Hemisphere at which the planet's magnetic field - created by molten iron within the planet’s core - points vertically downwards. 

The latest World Magnetic Model, which tracks the movement of the Earth’s magnetic field, shows that the magnetic north is moving at a rate of 30 miles per year.

This is the fastest recorded shift of the Earth's north since the mid-16th century and could cause havoc for aviation and navigation systems, including smartphone apps that use GPS.

The WMM has also located ‘caution zones’ on Earth around the magnetic fields where compasses may be prone to errors and send users off course.

‘The magnetic North Pole wandered slowly around northern Canada from 1590 to around 1990 and then accelerated over the past 20 years moving from around 10 km (6.2 miles) per year to over 50 km (31 miles) per year,’ Ciaran Beggan of the British Geological Survey told MailOnline. 

‘In contrast, the south magnetic pole has barely moved much in the past 100 years as the flow of the outer core there is much more sedate.'

After circling northern Canada for hundreds of years, the approximate location of the magnetic north pole started moving speedily towards Siberia at around the turn of the century.

In recent months, it has crossed the Greenwich meridian line - the line of Zero Longitude from which all other longitudinal lines are measured.

Earth’s magnetic field is created by the movement of liquid iron in the Earth’s outer core, some 1,800 miles below our feet.

The iron is super hot (over 5,432 degrees Fahrenheit) and as runny as water meaning it flows very easily. 

As the liquid flows, it drags the magnetic field with it.  

‘We think the magnetic north pole has been sucked into a fast moving jet stream near the top of the planet and that’s causing it to be pulled from Canada to Siberia,’ Dr Beggan said. 

'There are other factors, but that is the main one.'

Since its discovery in 1831, the north magnetic pole has travelled a total of around 1,400 miles.

This movement has been generally quite slow, but since the turn of the century has sped up – reaching an average speed of about 34 miles per year.

The shift will mean there will be less chance to see the Aurora in place of northern Canada

The new WMM forecasts that the northern magnetic pole will continue drifting towards Siberia in the next five years, at a slightly slower speed of about 25 miles per year.

The move also means that the northern lights will move slightly away from northern Canada towards Siberia, meaning there will be less chance to see them in some areas there. 

The World Magnetic Model is a vital tool for civilian navigation systems and marine and aviation charts, which need to constantly adjust their measurements to account for the shifts in magnetic north. 

Airport runways also rely on the navigation aid and use WMM data to give runways numerical names, which pilots refer to on the ground.

It’s the standard model used for navigation by the UK Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defence - and even compasses and smartphone apps that rely on GPS.

If you have smartphone with a map application (and an inbuilt compass which most phones do), then Google or Apple will change the magnetic field map in the next few months, as part of the general software updates. 

The WMM is jointly put together by the British Geological Survey and the USA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

It’s updated every five years to take account of the unpredictability of the Earth’s magnetic field.
