Magnetisch noorden blijft opschuiven naar Siberië: wat als de twee polen van plaats wisselen? - HLN.be
WETENSCHAPDe magnetische noordpool op aarde schuift de laatste jaren sneller op dan de voorbije vier eeuwen en is in september de nulmeridiaan gepasseerd. Het is nog niet duidelijk of de magnetische noord- en zuidpool ook effectief van plaats zullen wisselen, zoals dat sowieso ooit weer zal gebeuren. Moderne navigatiesystemen zullen alleszins opnieuw moeten worden gekalibreerd.
De magnetische noordpool is formeel ontdekt in 1831. Sindsdien heeft hij ongeveer 2.250 km afgelegd. De voorbije twee decennia verplaatst hij zich van het Canadese noordpoolgebied oostwaarts, richting Siberië, met een gemiddelde snelheid van 55 km per jaar. Dat is veel sneller dan het gemiddelde van 14,5 km per jaar voorheen. De recentste wetenschappelijke modellen voorspellen dat dit proces nog enige tijd zal aanhouden, zij het aan een lager tempo van 40 km per jaar.
De verschuiving is van belang voor de accuraatheid van gps - ook kaarten en allerlei kompasafhankelijke apps op onze smartphone - en andere navigatiesystemen. Legers verlaten zich erop voor hun onderzeeërs, vliegtuigen en parachutisten. In de praktijk kunnen vliegtuigen en schepen er hinder van ondervinden. Zo moest de luchthaven van Fairbanks in Alaska in 2009 een startbaan van naam veranderen omdat die gebaseerd was op het veranderende magnetische noorden, waarop een kompas zich oriënteert. In 2033 zullen ze waarschijnlijk opnieuw de naam moeten wijzigen. Hoe dichter bij de noordpool, hoe voelbaarder de effecten van de verschuiving van het magnetisch veld.

Ook vogels, zalmen en zeeschildpadden, die gebruik maken van het magnetisch veld om zich te oriënteren, zich zullen moeten aanpassen als de magnetische noord- en zuidpool van plaats wisselen.
Stel dat er - zoals in het verleden al vaker gebeurde zonder noemenswaardige biologische gevolgen, én wat sowieso opnieuw zal gebeuren - een ompoling plaatsvindt, dan wijst een kompasnaald niet langer naar het geografische noorden maar naar het zuiden. De laatste keer dat er een gedeeltelijke switch van de magnetische polen voorviel, was 22.000 jaar geleden. Voor een volledige ompoling moeten we al 780.000 jaar terug in de tijd. Mogelijk zit de aarde opnieuw in een periode van omschakeling. Een aanwijzing daarvoor is de huidige verzwakking van het aardmagnetische veld.
Kompas wijst ware noorden aan
Een kompas in Greenwich, de Londense wijk waar de nulmeridiaan doorloopt, duidde in september voor het eerst in 360 jaar (sinds 1660) het “ware noorden” aan, dat bepaald wordt door de aardas. Met andere woorden: het magnetische en het geografische noorden vielen samen.
De nulmeridiaan werd in 1884 voorgesteld als het officiële ijkpunt van nul graden, nul minuten en nul seconden. De geografische noordpool van de aarde ligt in de Noordelijke IJszee, de geografische zuidepool op het continent Antarctica. De voorbije vier eeuwen wees een kompas in Londen westwaarts ten opzichte van het ware noorden. Verwacht wordt dat tegen 2040 alle kompassen oostwaarts van het geografische noorden zullen wijzen.
Dat het magnetische noorden op drift is, komt door een verzwakking in het magnetische veld. Waarom dat zo is, weten onderzoekers niet. Om de vijf jaar lossen zij een nieuwe versie van het World Magnetic Model, vandaar de recente update voor 2020. Door de versnelde verschuiving van het magnetische noorden kwam er uitzonderlijk ook al in februari een tijdelijke update.
WETENSCHAPDe mysterieuze moai, het zou een Suske & Wiske-album kunnen zijn. Maar de stenen beelden op Paaseiland zijn géén stripfiguren: ze bestaan écht. Ze werden vermoedelijk tussen de elfde en zeventiende eeuw geboetseerd. Waarom, dat houdt wetenschappers al jaren bezig. Een nieuwe ontdekking uit de recentste studie staaft de hypothese van bodemvruchtbaarheid.
Het nieuwe onderzoek werd geleid door Jo Anne Van Tilburg van de University of California in Los Angeles en teves directeur van het Easter Island Statue Project. Zij werkt al dertig jaar op het afgelegen Polynesische eiland, op zo’n 3.000 km van de Chileense kust.
Haar team bestudeerde twee van de meer dan duizend monolithische beelden in het oosten van Paaseiland of Rapa Nui. Beide moai werden in een periode van vijf jaar opgegraven in de steengroeve Rano Raraku, waar 95 procent van de beelden uitgehouwen zijn. Ze dateren volgens Van Tilburg van ergens tussen 1510 en 1645 - vijftig jaar later stopte de productie door contacten met het westen. De focus lag op moai RR-0001-156, een van de enige drie op het hele eiland die versierd waren met een reeks samenhangende rotstekeningmotieven.
Hoewel ze helemaal niet focuste op de vruchtbaarheid van de grond, liet Van Tilburg toch uit nieuwsgierigheid bodemstalen nauwkeurig onderzoeken. Uit de analyse bleek dat de bodem van Rano Raraku de vruchtbaarste op heel Paaseiland was. Meer nog: het delven zelf van de vulkanische steen zou, in combinatie met de aanwezigheid van een zoetwaterbron, hebben bijgedragen tot de vruchtbaarheid. De constante aanvoer van stukjes grondgesteente zorgde mee voor een natuurlijke bemesting van de bodem die al rijk aan klei was. Er werden in het gebied sporen gevonden voor de aanwezigheid van voedsel als zoete aardappel, fleskalebas, bananen en taro.
De moai op Paaseiland werden van de elfde tot de zeventiende eeuw gemaakt in opdracht van de heersende elite. De eilandbewoners geloofden dat de monolitische torso’s de landbouwfertiliteit zouden verhogen en dus ook de cruciale voedselvoorraden. Dat is de stelling van het nieuwe onderzoek, dat gepubliceerd werd in de Journal of Archaeological Science.
De vruchtbaarheid van de bodem werd al veel langer geopperd als reden voor de aanwezigheid van de moai’s op Paaseiland. Van Tilburg beweert nu ook wetenschappelijk bewijs te hebben gevonden dankzij de analyse van bodemstalen uit de voormalige steengroeve, die ook een vruchtbaar landbouwgebied bleek te zijn.
De twee opgegraven moai waren rechtopstaande standbeelden. Het ene stond op een voetstuk, het andere was ingebed in de grond. Dat wijst erop dat ze op hun plaats moesten blijven. “Dit onderzoek gaat radicaal in tegen de idee dat alle standbeelden van Rano Raraku gewoon wachtten om te worden getransporteerd”, aldus Van Tilburg. “Dat betekent dat deze en waarschijnlijk ook andere rechtopstaande moai in Rano Raraku daar werden gehouden om de heiligheid van de groeve zelf te waarborgen. De moai stonden centraal in het vruchtbaarheidsidee, en in het geloof van Rapanui dat hun aanwezigheid hier de landbouwproductie van voedsel stimuleerde.”
De ploeg wetenschappers onderzoekt nu ook nog verder de artistieke inkervingen in de enige drie beelden op Paaseiland die ze bevatten.

This effect came to be known as the butterfly effect. The amount of difference in the starting points of the two curves is so small that it is comparable to a butterfly flapping its wings. Lorenz started to look for a simpler system that had sensitive dependence on initial conditions. His first discovery had twelve equations, and he wanted a much more simple version that still had this attribute. He took the equations for convection, and stripped them down, making them unrealistically simple. The system no longer had anything to do with convection, but it did have sensitive dependence on its initial conditions, and there were only three equations this time. Later, it was discovered that his equations precisely described a water wheel. At the top, water drips steadily into containers hanging on the wheel’s rim. Each container drips steadily from a small hole. If the stream of water is slow, the top containers never fill fast enough to overcome friction, but if the stream is faster, the weight starts to turn the wheel. The rotation might become continuous. Or if the stream is so fast that the heavy containers swing all the way around the bottom and up the other side, the wheel might then slow, stop, and reverse its rotation, turning first one way and then the other. As the growth rate increased, the final population would increase as well. Then, something weird happened. As soon as the growth rate passed 3, the line broke in two. Instead of settling down to a single population, it would jump between two different populations. It would be one value for one year, go to another value the next year, then repeat the cycle forever. Raising the growth rate a little more caused it to jump between four different values. As the parameter rose further, the line bifurcated (doubled) again. The bifurcations came faster and faster until suddenly, chaos appeared. Past a certain growth rate, it becomes impossible to predict the behavior of the equation. However, upon closer inspection, it is possible to see white strips. Looking closer at these strips reveals little windows of order, where the equation goes through the bifurcations again before returning to chaos. This self-similarity, the fact that the graph has an exact copy of itself hidden deep inside, came to be an important aspect of chaos. An employee of IBM, Benoit Mandelbrot was a mathematician studying this self-similarity. One of the areas he was studying was cotton price fluctuations. No matter how the data on cotton prices was analyzed, the results did not fit the normal distribution. Mandelbrot eventually obtained all of the available data on cotton prices, dating back to 1900. When he analyzed the data with IBM’s computers, he noticed an astonishing fact: The numbers that produced aberrations from the point of view of normal distribution produced symmetry from the point of view of scaling. Each particular price change was random and unpredictable. But the sequence of changes was independent on scale: curves for daily price changes and monthly price changes matched perfectly. Incredibly, analyzed Mandelbrot’s way, the degree of variation had remained constant over a tumultuous sixty-year period that saw two World Wars and a depression. Mandelbrot analyzed not only cotton prices, but many other phenomena as well. At one point, he was wondering about the length of a coastline. A map of a coastline will show many bays. However, measuring the length of a coastline off a map will miss minor bays that were too small to show on the map. Likewise, walking along the coastline misses microscopic bays in between grains of sand. No matter how much a coastline is magnified, there will be more bays visible if it is magnified more. One mathematician, Helge von Koch, captured this idea in a mathematical construction called the Koch curve. To create a Koch curve, imagine an equilateral triangle. To the middle third of each side, add another equilateral triangle. Keep on adding new triangles to the middle part of each side, and the result is a Koch curve. A magnification of the Koch curve looks exactly the same as the original. It is another self-similar figure:
The Koch curve brings up an interesting paradox. Each time new triangles are added to the figure, the length of the line gets longer. However, the inner area of the Koch curve remains less than the area of a circle drawn around the original triangle. Essentially, it is a line of infinite length surrounding a finite area. To get around this difficulty, mathematicians invented fractal dimensions. Fractal comes from the word fractional. The fractal dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere around 1.26. A fractional dimension is impossible to conceive, but it does make sense. The Koch curve is rougher than a smooth curve or line, which has one dimension. Since it is rougher and more crinkly, it is better at taking up space. However, it’s not as good at filling up space as a square with two dimensions is, since it doesn’t really have any area. So it makes sense that the dimension of the Koch curve is somewhere in between the two. Fractal has come to mean any image that displays the attribute of self-similarity. The bifurcation diagram of the population equation is fractal. The Lorenz Attractor is fractal. The Koch curve is fractal. During this time, scientists found it very difficult to get work published about chaos. Since they had not yet shown the relevance to real-world situations, most scientists did not think the results of experiments in chaos were important. As a result, even though chaos is a mathematical phenomenon, most of the research into chaos was done by people in other areas, such as meteorology and ecology. The field of chaos sprouted up as a hobby for scientists working on problems that maybe had something to do with it. Later, a scientist by the name of Feigenbaum was looking at the bifurcation diagram again. He was looking at how fast the bifurcations come. He discovered that they come at a constant rate. He calculated it as 4.669. In other words, he discovered the exact scale at which it was self-similar. Make the diagram 4.669 times smaller, and it looks like the next region of bifurcations. He decided to look at other equations to see if it was possible to determine a scaling factor for them as well. Much to his surprise, the scaling factor was exactly the same. Not only was this complicated equation displaying regularity, the regularity was exactly the same as a much simpler equation. He tried many other functions, and they all produced the same scaling factor, 4.669. This was a revolutionary discovery. He had found that a whole class of mathematical functions behaved in the same, predictable way. This universality would help other scientists easily analyze chaotic equations. Universality gave scientists the first tools to analyze a chaotic system. Now they could use a simple equation to predict the outcome of a more complex equation. Many scientists were exploring equations that created fractal equations. The most famous fractal image is also one of the most simple. It is known as the Mandelbrot set. The equation is simple: z=z2+c. To see if a point is part of the Mandelbrot set, just take a complex number z. Square it, then add the original number. Square the result, then add the original number. Repeat that ad infinitum, and if the number keeps on going up to infinity, it is not part of the Mandelbrot set. If it stays down below a certain level, it is part of the Mandelbrot set. The Mandelbrot set is the innermost section of the picture, and each different shade of gray represents how far out that particular point is. One interesting feature of the Mandelbrot set is that the circular humps match up to the bifurcation graph. The Mandelbrot fractal has the same self-similarity seen in the other equations. In fact, zooming in deep enough on a Mandelbrot fractal will eventually reveal an exact replica of the Mandelbrot set, perfect in every detail. Fractal structures have been noticed in many real-world areas, as well as in mathematician’s minds. Blood vessels branching out further and further, the branches of a tree, the internal structure of the lungs, graphs of stock market data, and many other real-world systems all have something in common: they are all self-similar. Scientists at UC Santa Cruz found chaos in a dripping water faucet. By recording a dripping faucet and recording the periods of time, they discovered that at a certain flow velocity, the dripping no longer occurred at even times. When they graphed the data, they found that the dripping did indeed follow a pattern. The human heart also has a chaotic pattern. The time between beats does not remain constant; it depends on how much activity a person is doing, among other things. Under certain conditions, the heartbeat can speed up. Under different conditions, the heart beats erratically. It might even be called a chaotic heartbeat. The analysis of a heartbeat can help medical researchers find ways to put an abnormal heartbeat back into a steady state, instead of uncontrolled chaos. Researchers discovered a simple set of three equations that graphed a fern. This started a new idea – perhaps DNA encodes not exactly where the leaves grow, but a formula that controls their distribution. DNA, even though it holds an amazing amount of data, could not hold all of the data necessary to determine where every cell of the human body goes. However, by using fractal formulas to control how the blood vessels branch out and the nerve fibers get created, DNA has more than enough information. It has even been speculated that the brain itself might be organized somehow according to the laws of chaos. Chaos even has applications outside of science. Computer art has become more realistic through the use of chaos and fractals. Now, with a simple formula, a computer can create a beautiful, and realistic tree. Instead of following a regular pattern, the bark of a tree can be created according to a formula that almost, but not quite, repeats itself. Music can be created using fractals as well. On December 15, 2019, sky-watcher Shadab Shaikh from Mangalore, South Karnataka, India was testing his camera, a Canon 700D /Canon 55-250mm with solar filter (10stop ND filter) as a preparation to film and photograph the Annular Solar Eclipse (94%) visible from Mangalore on 26-12-2019.
During the test he shot a 30 seconds video of the sun and after the clip was copied on his PC he noticed 11 circular UFOs moving in front of the sun.
Some of the UFOs appear to be moving fast and some slow. Some in a straight line and some in a curved path and one UFO even passes the sun, then makes a U-turn and moves back in the direction where it just came from.

By spending roughly a week observing the coronal holes—areas of colder, darker low-density plasma— the Parker Solar Probe was able to strongly correlate coronal holes located near the sun's equator, to the origin of slow solar wind. But that wasn’t even the most surprising part from the brand new information!

A UFO was caught hovering over a town for several minutes in the Californian night sky over Menifee town. It seemed to hang in one area with several bright lights on it for a couple of minutes.
Residents were quick to record the UFO while trying to figure out what it was.
One confused onlooker can be heard questioning the identity of the bright UFO. Another witness in the clip wondered whether the lights and the outline in the dark sky could be a group of drones.
A bystander replied that they are too high to be drones. Another one said that it’s the alien.
The video was reportedly recorded in October this year but has recently resurfaced on the internet.
In the caption, the uploader claimed over a hundred witnesses saw the UFO over Menifee.
They also reveal that the bizarre object made no noise whatsoever.
They added that the vast UFO sped up into the night sky after hovering for around five minutes.
Youtube users were unable to agree on an explanation of the UFO sighting video.

The first week of December kicked off a flurry of productivity for NASA Commercial Crew Program partners SpaceX and Boeing. Ahead of crewed astronaut flight in 2020, both partners are working toward the completion of integral test flights of the two crew capsules that will carry astronauts to orbit from American soil for the first time since 2011.
While SpaceX nailed down a firm targeted launch date for the upcoming in-flight abort (IFA) test of its Crew Dragon capsule, Boeing and launch provider United Launch Alliance (ULA) worked to complete what is known as an Integrated Day of Launch Test (IDOLT) – a standard procedure ahead of human-rated spaceflight.
This type of rehearsal was routinely completed during the space shuttle era – then referred to as Terminal Countdown Demonstration Tests. The IDOLT was a final major step ahead of the orbital flight test (OFT) of the Atlas V and Boeing Starliner capsule. The upcoming flight test will closely reflect procedures completed by SpaceX with the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon capsule during its version of the orbital flight test referred to as Demonstration Mission – 1 which previously occurred in March of 2019.
Earlier in the week, ULA rolled out its mighty Atlas V rocket topped off with the Starliner crew capsule from the Vertical Integration Facility to the Space Launch Complex – 41 launchpad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Once at the launchpad, the Crew Access Arm featuring a “white room” at the end that secures to the Starliner capsule to allow astronaut entrance was swung to the capsule for the very first timeOn Wednesday, December 4th, ULA and Boeing teams prepared to support the IDOLT, while SpaceX teams worked nearby at Space Launch Complex – 40 to support the CRS-19 resupply mission to the International Space Station. The simultaneous preparations resulted in the unique opportunity to view both rockets slated to support crewed astronaut flights in 2020 on launchpads and essentially prepared for flight.

While SpaceX ultimately successfully launched and landed a brand new Falcon 9 booster during the CRS-19 mission on Thursday, December 5th, a scrubbed attempt meant a one-day delay of launch which in turn resulted in a one-day delay for Boeing and ULA’s IDOLT and wet dress rehearsal (WDR).

The scrubbed launch essentially tied up range operations of the 45th Space Wing so that the area around the active launch pads – air, sea, and land – could not be secured for both events to take place on the same day. As the CRS-19 launch was an active operation for both SpaceX and NASA, it took precedence over ULA and Boeing’s rehearsal. Instead, Thursday was used to complete other necessary vehicle testing by Boeing and ULA.

Friday’s IDOLT ahead of Starliner’s flight debut for the OFT was a coordinated effort by NASA, Boeing, and ULA teams in multiple locations around the country.

The teams went through actual fueling procedures the Atlas V rocket and Centaur upper stage. Atlas V was filled with a type of rocket-grade kerosene propellant, RP-1, on Wednesday ahead of the IDOLT. The Centaur upper stage fully filled with cryogenic propellants – liquid oxygen (LOx) and liquid hydrogen.
Once fueling had completed Boeing’s “Blue Team” entered the pad to begin their synchronized rehearsal portion of the launch day sequence to prepare and secure the Starliner capsule and astronauts flying aboard.

Once the Blue Team completed all tasks and were evacuated from the pad, flight controllers from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX gave the “GO” command and proceeded with terminal count until reaching T minus-0 at which point the test concluded. The cryogenic propellants were drained and the vehicle was safed to be safely returned to the Vertical Integration Facility where final steps will be taken to prepare for launch.
The next time the teams will all work together in such coordinated fashion this will be on the day of launch. In mid-2020 the teams are expected to work together once again to support the Crewed Flight Test (CFT) which will send NASA astronauts Col. Mike Fincke, Nicole Mann, and Christopher Ferguson.

Until then, however, they will have to settle for the uncrewed test flight. According to ULA president and chief executive officer, Tory Bruno, post-WDR data evaluation and joint flight readiness review conducted by all teams involved are proceeding smoothly. Should all go to plan, the Atlas V and Boeing Starliner OFT will launch at 6:36 am EST on Friday, December 20th.

The Fibonacci Sequence is a mathematical formula that frequently appears in nature. It also makes some really interesting spiral shapes. The sequence was discovered by an Italian mathematician named Leonardo Fibonacci around the 13th century. This might sound strange, but he discovered the phenomenon by studying rabbits. So, what is the Fibonacci Sequence and how is it used?
Leonardo Fibonacci
Leonardo Fibonacci, also known as Leonardo of Pisa, studied math from a young age. He was sent by his father to study under an Arab mathematician, which took him all over the world. During his career, he wrote several books and even became friends with the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II.
In the 12th century, not much was known about Arabic numerals (the number system we use today) in Europe. In his travels to Egypt, Syria, Greece, and Sicily, he was able to study a wide variety of numerical systems and see how they were used. He wrote his first book called “Liber abaci” about how the Arabic numeral system worked, including basic arithmetic; how it could be used with money, weights, and measures; and how to use a few tips for calculations like the ‘rule of three’ and the ‘rule of five’ method for finding proportions. It was a hit and pushed him to the forefront of the mathematical world.
Discovering the sequence
After his initial successes, he began to study math in nature, which led him to his most famous discovery: the Fibonacci sequence. Around 1202, Fibonacci came up with an interesting thought experiment. He wanted to see if he could mathematically calculate how many pairs of rabbits could be produced in one year. Because that’s something everyone wonders at some point, right?
He knew that rabbits could reproduce at one month old, had a one-month gestation, and typically produce two offspring, one male and one female. So, theoretically, if he started with one pair of rabbits, a male and a female, they would have matured by the second month, and in the third month would give birth to another pair. The original pair could mate again in the third month, while the younger pair is maturing. In the fourth month, the original pair would give birth to yet another set of rabbits while the second pair was mating. In the fifth month, both pairs would reproduce while the youngest pair matures, resulting in five sets of rabbits.
If you look at it in terms of numbers by month, the sequence goes like this: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5. Each consecutive number is the sum of the two numbers before it. If you continue the pattern, it would go: 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144. So, in Fibonacci’s original experiment, he would have 144 pairs of rabbits in one year. What he would do with all those rabbits, who knows, but since his initial discovery, the Fibonacci sequence has become known as the Golden Ratio.
The golden spiral
The Fibonacci sequence can also be depicted in the form of a spiral that grows wider as defined by the Golden Ratio. The first arc is in a 1×1 square. A second arc is connected to the original in an adjacent 1×1 square. The next portion of the arc is in a 2×2 square. The next in a 3×3 square, and so on up through the sequence. The result is a spiral that spreads out and gets wider as it goes.
The Fibonacci sequence in nature
Most impressively, this ratio can be found throughout the natural world. The number of petals that grow on flowers is almost always a number in the Fibonacci sequence. Lilies have three petals, buttercups have five, and daisies have 34, just to name a few.
The golden spiral can also be found throughout nature. If you look at the spiral pattern on a shell belonging to a hermit crab, you’ll notice that the spiral starts at a point in the center and widens as it goes outward. Sunflowers and pinecones also follow the golden spiral with their seed patterns. On the larger scale, hurricanes and even galaxies follow the golden spiral pattern as well. These spirals are an exact depiction of the Fibonacci sequence.
Jump to 3:02 into this video and you will see a large white disk about a meter across shoot in a curved trajectory under and past the SpaceX satellite. There is no way an object could curve its path in space. Only an intelligently controlled or living organism could achieve such a curve. These so called 'red transients' have not yet received an adequate origin story accepted by scientists.
One option is the possibility of an actual vanishing star, which has the potential to rewrite what we know about astrophysics.
'Finding an actually vanishing star - or a star that appears out of nowhere! - would be a precious discovery and certainly would include new astrophysics beyond the one we know of today,' says project leader Beatriz Villarroel, Stockholm University and Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, Spain.

WHAT IS SETI'S BREAKTHROUGH LISTEN INITIATIVE?
Breakthrough Listen is a privately funded, decade-long research project based at the University of California, Berkeley.
It has just announced a significant number of new observations.
They examined roughly 1,300 nearby stars using large antennas in West Virginia and Australia.
For each of these star systems, they sifted through several billion radio channels, looking for a signal of the type that only a radio transmitter can produce.
No extraterrestrial radio emissions were detected.
But those 1,300 stars represent only a minuscule sample of the total planetary population.
The alluded to era of a new astrophysics may well include signals produced by extraterrestrial life.
Researchers write in their paper, recently published in The Astronomical Journal, that traditional searches may have to be expanded to include 'more exotic searches for evidence of technologically advanced civilisations'.
Blinking lights are so unusual because normally a dying star gradually changes into either a white dwarf or goes supernova.
Both eventualities can be monitored and witnessed, but for the light to appear and disappear, indicates there must be something different happening entirely.
A vanishing star, believed to be the most likely option, could be an example of an 'impossible phenomenon', according to researchers.
The only explanation for the lights that does not include alien life would be exceedingly rare events called 'failed supernovae'.
A failed supernovae is theoretically predicted to occur when a very massive star collapses into a black hole without any visible explosion.

On December 12, 2019, Kevin Short was on a fishing/camping trip trip in Wales when he noticed a huge object hovering above the sea on which he decided to film it.
Kevin has no idea what the object might have been but after watching the video, the object does not seem to be connected to a ship or platform in the sea.
Given the enormous size of the object, it does not seem to be a blimp either.
