This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Majestic 12: When a Wave of “Secret UFO Documents” Surfaced in the 1990s

Continuing on my theme on the Majestic 12 documents, the mysterious “Falcon,” Stan Friedman, espionage and the FBI, and alleged leaked papers on crashed UFOs and dead aliens, today I thought I would share with you what specifically came after all of that. I’m talking about another Falcon-type character who claimed knowledge of the truth of Roswell, alien autopsies and more. In this case, the time-frame was not the 1970s-1980s, but the early 1990s. And the man who revealed the then-new Majestic 12 documents was a resident of Big Bear Lake, California: Timothy Cooper. Although no longer active in the UFO research community, Cooper provoked a wealth of controversy for saucer-seekers when it was announced what he had in his possession. It was all “thanks” to an enormous body of allegedly leaked and highly secret documentation that had been given to Cooper under circumstances worthy of All the President’s Men. Cooper was certainly no Woodward or Bernstein, but you get the point I’m making: Cooper said he had insider sources who were willing to significantly assist his UFO research by feeding him controversial papers on aliens and extraterrestrial spacecraft. Clandestine mail-drops in the dead of night were very much the order of the day. The primary informants were an elderly man named “Thomas Cantwheel” and a woman named “Salina.” The latter was said to have been Cantwheel’s daughter. Both of them, Cooper was told, had worked in the field of U.S. counterintelligence for decades. They were the careful keepers of untold numbers of sinister UFO-connected secrets, some supposedly connected to the 1962 death of uber-babe, Marilyn Monroe, and to the November 22, 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy, in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. If you believe their words, that is.

It’s important to note that if you do a Google search on “Cantwheel” you will find only links that deal with UFOs, Tim Cooper, and Majestic 12. The reason for this is very simple: “Cantwheel” is not a real name and never has been. Yet, that’s the name Cooper’s source consistently signed off on his communications to Cooper. The closest real name is “Cantwell.” Even now, I’m still amazed as to why hardly anyone, back in the 1990s in the UFO research community, pointed out that “Cantwell” was a completely manufactured name. Over a period of time that ran close to a decade, Cooper’s informants provided him with what ultimately amounted to thousands of pages of saucer-themed material and additional data. They were focused on everything from Majestic 12 to alien autopsies, and from accounts of crashed UFOs to attempts by the U.S. military to replicate extraterrestrial technology.

One of the documents even alluded to the possibility that the May 22, 1949 death of James Forrestal – the first U.S. Secretary of Defense – was not the suicide that many assumed it was. Rather, the Cooper papers suggest, Forrestal had to be taken out of circulation to ensure that he didn’t go public on what he knew about flying saucers. What really set the Cooper-era Majestic 12 documentation apart from that which caught the attention of the Moore-Shandera-Friedman team in the 1980s, however, were the references to deadly viruses. Indeed, in several of the papers provided to Cooper there were references to plans to try and back-engineer an alien virus. This was way more controversial than the original Majestic 12 documents that reached Jaime Shandera and Bill Moore. Tim Cooper quit the UFO scene more than a few years ago. He has not returned. And no more leaked documents have surfaced. Who, precisely, Cantwheel and Salina were – and what their true agenda was in the matter of aliens (dead or alive) – remains a mystery. As does just about everything – from the 1970s to the 1990s – that relates to the matter of alleged leaked documents of a UFO-themed nature.

Sphere Cloud Over Japan Is Cloaked UFO, Oct 11, 2020, Photos, UFO Sighting News.

Location of sighting: Fujisawa, just south of Tokyo, Japan
    Source:
Its a well known fact among UFO researchers that UFOs not only hide in clouds, but can even make the cloud to hide within. This perfectly shaped sphere clouds is clearly held together by a alien sphere within its center. Twitter user @pmxpvrtmx(Poppy) was so frightened that this might actually be a UFO, they changed their name on Twitter to @wizorwizoutu and made their account private. Clearly the fact that this has an alien appearance about it caused them to make such a drastic change. This is absolutely and undeniably a UFO cloaked in a cloud sphere.
    Scott C. Waring

    News states:

According to reports from the photographer, the cloud began to lose its shape as soon because it was photographed, then rapidly faded into the sky as if it never existed. "When I looked out of the window I saw a round ball-shaped cloud. I gazed at the cloud for ages then I rushed to require the photo, after I saw the cloud it had been an excellent more spherical shape, so I regret not taking the photo more quickly." Twitter user @pmxpvrtmx(Poppy) told the local Japanese news outlet, Rocket News 24.

Bright lights were filmed over Laporte, Indiana

This UFO sighting video was filmed back in November (23rd) 2019 but it was just posted in MUFON’s website today.

    Witness report:

I see these lights often. Nothing else could have made these lights, just corn underneath the lights and a road. They don’t look military too me. Lights appear and fade out, lights change formation then a different light takes the front. I watched them go over my house then break formation and speed off in different directions faster then any plane I have seen.

Alleged UFO photos over China Lake analyzed

In October 2017 a curious post appeared on the facebook page of ‘Art Bell’s Midnight In The Desert Feat Heather Wade’. It showed an apparent daylight scene of a ‘UFO’ in the desert with a helicopter hovering overhead. The text to accompany the photo read: “I’ve been holding on to these pictures for 10 years and it’s time I showed someone. I took pictures of this thing in July 2007 on out radar test range in the Mojave Desert. I’ve always been nervous to show anyone but here you go.”

My curiosity peeked I dropped the post of this message whom I shall call Keith Bradshaw (real name on file) a note in a private message asking for more details. Checking the next day the post had been removed but Keith did reply to my private message. Keith made it clear from the beginning that he was worried about releasing these photos as they had been taken illegally and he regretted posting one of them on facebook. It did however tell me that there were taken at China Lake in California at about 11.30 am.

Over the next several days Keith and I exchanged numerous private messages on facebook and he eventually told be the back story behind the taking of the photos in question. He also sent me five photographs in total. Here is what Keith had to say:

    KEITH’S STORY

I grew up in a town called Ridgecrest which is a U.S. Naval base in the Mojave Desert. As a kid it was very easy to get onto the base and everyone in town had passes that would allow you through the gates to get to school, swimming pools, the movie theatre etc. Everyone knew someone who worked on the base so you would get to know where the different parts of the base were. They had the bombing range and the radar range. I grew up with a kid who after High School joined the Navy. After he retired he moved back to town and got a job working in the civil service on the base monitoring radar. He said it was the world’s most boring job but he did tell me about interesting things that went on out there. Things like them having jeeps and tanks scattered all over the desert and then flipping a switch and they all would disappear. Turns out that’s what fiber optic camouflage does. People would talk about unbelievable things that turned out to be true. Planes would come from all over the world to use the radar test range out there. I have pictures of that too. Planes with markings from other countries. While I was in between jobs in 2007 I went back to town to visit some of my old friends.

While I was in town I stopped by this friend’s house and after a few drinks he started telling me how that week he had been monitoring a flying saucer. When I asked him how he knew that’s what it was he told me- first of all, in all the years he had been doing that job he never had two generals and three other men with top security clearance recording and watching everything he did. He explained how it was very simple. There were two signals on the radar screen. One would appear very low in altitude, go up to a certain higher altitude and then click off. There would be a countdown for a certain amount of time- five; four, three, two, one and then it would click back on. When this happened the first time the people in the room got very excited. The object on his screen would lower in altitude until it was no longer on the radar, move to a different position and repeat the same thing over and over at different altitudes. All the while the other signal on the radar screen would remain constant.

Curious as to what it was he was monitoring he asked around. People that he knew who physically worked on the radar range and would see what was out there told him that believe it or not it was a flying saucer. They described it as being shiny like a mirror and smooth like glass all over inside and out. It had no doors or windows only a hole cut in the top (I got the idea that the hole had jagged edges like it was cut with something) they described the inside as only having three small seats surrounded by a bird nest of fiber optic cable. The seats were molded out of the floor rather than attached to the floor. This thing was one piece with no seams anywhere.

Keep in mind that description is just a rumour as to what it was like. He didn’t actually see it himself he was just told that’s what it was. Being in between jobs and having nothing to do the next day I made my way out there. ( I’m not telling you how I was able to get there but I will say I walked a very long distance) as I got closer I could hear a helicopter so I peeked up over a hill and down in the small valley below sure enough I could see this silver disc out there. There were a few tan-colored trailers and other military vehicles on the North End of the valley. This thing would wobble along close to the ground very unstable. I don’t believe anyone could have been riding on the inside but got the idea that helicopter was remotely controlling it.

It was very wobbly as it moved along close to the ground and then it would freeze in position, go up to a certain height and sit there for a few minutes perfectly still. It made no noise that I could hear over the helicopter. It would go back down and wobble to the next position. It looked like whoever was controlling it was having fun with it sometimes because they would do little tricks with it.

Like one edge would be pointing towards the sky and then it would do a U-shaped flip to where the other edge was pointing towards the sky then back down and wobble along the valley floor close to the ground to its next position.

At first I was too afraid to take any pictures but then it got really close to me so I started snapping some photos figuring that if I was going to be caught I might as well have some pictures. I also took a short video but then to save space on my camera I started deleting the blurry pictures. I spent maybe 10 minutes total watching this thing. I then turned around and got out of there as quickly as I could. I took my shirt off thinking the color of my skin would blend in with my surroundings better than the color of my white shirt. About halfway back I got scared and hid the camera in the desert.

That night I went back over to my friend’s house and when I told him what I had done he laughed in disbelief until I told him the path this thing followed from the North-West side of the valley to the South-East. When he realized I was telling the truth he got very angry and threw a plastic cup at me. He basically chased me out of the house telling me never to go get those pictures. I let them sit there for two days and then went back and got the camera. When I looked at the pictures there was no video and I realized that what I thought was a blurry picture was actually a blurry video that I deleted. I still kick myself for that one every time I think about it. A few years later I went back to town and ran into him at Walmart and he pretended he didn’t even know me. This is someone that I have known my whole life. We went to school together and played on the same Little League baseball teams.

I’ve been holding on to these pictures ever since. That is all there is. Sorry it’s not more exciting. I really don’t know how you would write an article about it. “

    KEITH’S ALLEGED UFO PHOTOGRAPHS

Well, an interesting story and interesting set of alleged UFO photographs. Of course you cannot just take the photographers word for it that the photographs are what he says they are. With this in mind I sought out a number of people who could undertake analysis of these photographs. The first was Jason Gleaves in the UK and this is his full and unedited report with comes complete with five computer photographs highlighting the points in his report.

ANALYSIS IMAGE REPORT BY JASON GLEAVES

Metallic Disk Shaped Object Captured Near the U.S. Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake, California, U.S.

I was asked by Philip Mantle if I could conduct my own analysis on five interesting UFO images captured of a Disk Shaped Object (metallic in appearance) which appeared to be stationary appropriately 50-60 feet above a desert environment (location unknown at this point). Also in another image a helicopter (HH-1K Iroquois, helicopter (“Huey”) is also captured in flight above the right side of the object and appears to be passing slightly behind (speed unknown).

First appearance the images looked authentic but with technology of today and software (photoshop etc) you really can’t rely on image authenticity, no matter how good it looks.

More detailed enlarged and enhanced images of the metallic object appear to show sunlight and consistent reflections on the body of the object, plus in one of the images a dark oval shadow is clearly seen directly below the object again consistent where a shadow would be (without actually seeing where the Sun location/position is in relation to the object, it’s always difficult to give a more accurate Sun-object-Shadow location). I also produced a twin layer image overlay of two separate images (taken from approximately the same position/location) to see if the object had moved from its original position, I aligned the two images, to the best of my ability with similar reference points (background mountain range and cloud formation, horizon). Upon viewing the final enhancement of the overlay the Disk Shaped Object is clearly seen in two different positions, both at slightly different altitudes and one further away in relation to the other regarding their relevant positions within the two separate photographs.

A few days passed and a more detailed report and witness statement emerged giving the sighting location as (U.S. Marine Corps Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, California, U.S.) this is also consistent as to the type of military helicopters reported and documented being operational in that region, and similar to the Helicopter captured in the images.

Analysis by Jason Gleaves @Ufonly (Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Ufonly YouTube) I am Ex-Royal Air Force, BAE Airbus division, I contribute on numerous UFO pages and have carried out Photo/image/video footage analysis on UFO’s and anomalies for many ufologists within our community worldwide.

    ANALYSIS BY DR BRUCE MACCABEE

Another and perhaps more well known expert in the analysis of alleged UFO photographs is Dr Bruce Maccabee in the USA. Bruce is well known for his work on analyzing alleged UFO photographs. Dr Maccabee received a B.S. in physics at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass., and then at American University, Washington, DC, (M.S. and Ph.D. in physics). In 1972 he began his career at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, White Oak, Silver Spring, Maryland; which later became the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. Dr. Maccabee retired from government service in 2008. He has worked on optical data processing, generation of underwater sound with lasers and various aspects of the Strategic Defence Initiative (SDI) and Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) using high power lasers.

    ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION

My immediate impression was that the orientations of the main rotor and tail rotor blades were very much the same. What would the chance of getting the same orientation in two pictures probably many seconds to minutes apart? See the pictures A and B below. Using the position change of distant land features I estimate that the camera pointing direction has rotated to the right by about 9 degrees (based on an assumed angular picture width of 35 degrees). The UFO has also moved to the right about 7 degrees and the helicopter moved about 11 degrees to the right. The helicopter image in B is nearly the same as in B, but the pictures are not identical.

    PICTURE A

    PICTURE B

The helicopter is about 10% farther from the camera in B and there is a helicopter body rotation to the left of some (10 or so?) degrees.

The lack of blur of the main rotor blades plus the nearly identical rotor blade orientation suggests a hoax with a model helicopter. The nearly identical position of the tail rotor blades also suggests a hoax but the blur of the tail rotor blades argues against a hoax unless one used a model with a rotating tail rotor. Note that the blur width of the edges of the tail rotor increases in going from the center (axle) outward to the end. This is exactly what one would expect of a rotating blade and is exactly what appears to be missing from the images of the main rotor blades.

    PICTURE C

A “fast shutter” (very short exposure time) can “stop” a moving object so that it moves very little during the exposure time. Therefore, if one could establish that the exposure time was short enough to effectively “stop” the motion of the main rotor while not being fast enough to “stop” a much faster tail rotor, one could explain this situation. How fast would the shutter have to be? That depends upon the rotor rate and radius (distance of the end from the axle). Consider, for example, a rotor rate of 360 revolutions per minute or 6/sec, The outer end of the rotor travels at 6 x 2 pi radians per second = 37.7 radians/sec. Assume a radius of 15 ft. The outer end of a blade is traveling at 37.7 x 15 = 565 ft/second = 6,786 inches/sec. Assume the blade is 1 ft wide at the outer end. To avoid noticeable motion blur the blade should move less than 1/10 its width or less than about 1 inch during the shutter time. So, what is this shutter time needed to register the image of the blade without noticeable blur? The answer is (1/6786 sec/inch) x 1 inch = 0.000147 seconds, much faster than any typical video camera shutter.

This analysis raises questions: (1) the near identically of the image of the helicopter in two separated-in-time frames suggests a “set up” (hoax)’; (2) the lack of blade image smear suggests very fast shutter or hoax; (3) the tail rotor blur suggests real event because difficult to hoax the blur that increases with distance from the center; There appears to be a faint slightly dark shadow under the UFO in Picture A which is not in Picture B (consistent with real) and there is only the barest hint of a shadow under the UFO in Picture B that is not there in Picture A (consistent with real.

Need to know camera type, settings etc. This might be a real event, but have to explain helicopter imagery

After spending some time analyzing the available testimonial and pictoral evidence and considering the actions or activities of the object in question I conclude that there is not enough evidence to prove that the object was not simply an unusually shaped drone operating under control of the person(s) flying the helicopter.

    ANALYSIS FROM TOBIAS LINDGREN

    Tobias Lindgren

    FIRST ANALYSIS

Now I have analyzed the pictures.

First I want to say that I have doubts if the object is really physical. It can be computer generated. As well as lack of basic data such as picture metadata, observation site, time, date, cardinal direction, and duration. If the unidentified object is physical, the following applies:

Roughly calculated distances in the picture. The references there are is the helicopter and the shrubs in the foreground. The helicopter is a Bell UH-1Y Venom, which is 17.8 meters long. The shrubs in the desert are about one meter high.

With these measures I can find out that the helicopter is about 20 times farther away from the photographer than the shrub. If the object is at the same distance as the helicopter, it has a diameter of about 6 meters and 12 meters if it is twice as far as the helicopter, but to me it is not likely. Accordingly I estimate the object was very close to the camera at the time the picture was taken.

If the object is at the same distance as the first bush, it is about 20 cm, but my assumption is that it is closer than that, less than half the distance from the camera to the shrubs, and then it will be less than 10 cm in diameter. The object’s reflected color on the underside shows only sand and ground colours, which is only to be seen between the bushes and the camera, no green from the vegetation. Same effect in the first picture without the helicopter. The dark spot on the ground, which my brain interprets as a shadow from the object, and the object itself is merely an unfortunate coincidence and has no relation, but creates the illusion of a long distance. The real shadows are aimed at the sun, and hard to spot.

However, the most crucial fact for the object to be placed close to the camera is the big sunflower / highlight that is on the object. The size of such is proportional to the distance.

Conclusion: High hoax factor. No obvious connection with the China Lake Naval Base, except for a similar environment. ”Photoshop” or physical object less than 10 cm. Such a small object could be a toy.

    SECOND ANALYSIS

    Hi.

The reason for the late answer is that we have just had our annual field investigation course in UFO-Sweden. It takes all of our time in October. Strange and interesting story, I have to say. Here we also see the risk of not having all the information.

It may be easy to believe that the previous analysis was poor and insufficient, but with the information available, the result will of course will come afterwards. What makes a person get so scared that you hide the pictures for ten years? No, I do not think the military is so stupid that they fly in an open space with a “flying saucer” if they want to keep it secret. It may be the total opposite instead which is to draw attention. But it may be to be all very conspiratory. Visually, I still think it does not feel right. The object (UFO) is blurry in a way that the rest of the pictures are not, and that tells me that something is not what it seems. It can still be, as I said before, that the object is so close to the camera that it is out of focus. Had the object been out of focus because of the distance, it should get something like a bit transparent due to atmospheric depth haze in the atmosphere.

I still have no idea what the object could be. Perhaps it might be a radio-controlled “toy” that the military testing, just as written in the witnesses story. The military obviously knows what it is because it’s no coincidence that it looks like it does, if it is not computer-generated images. I draw parallels with a Swedish hoax that went viral on YouTube a few years ago:

If this had happened in Sweden, UFO Sweden would have taken us to the location at “Ridgecrest” and knocked on all doors to look for more witnesses. In recent projects where we did this, it was found that 10 percent of all people had a story they did not mention before.

    Regards

His interest in UFO study began in the late 1970’s, but only became really active as an ufologist 10 years later. Had been the head of the UFO-Sweden Report Center from 2005 to 2015. In this position, he coordinated Swedish UFO investigations, distributing incoming cases among field investigators. He is now responsible for the UFO-Sweden website. He writes regularly for the “UFO-Aktuellt” Newspaper. He is UFO-Sweden’s image analyst. He has also studied computer science. mathematics and physics at Linköping University and more recently, visualization and geographic information systems. He is now employed as a GIS engineer at the Swedish Aviation Authority in Norrköping and works with flight information, airplanes and visualization.

As if that wasn’t enough yet more analysis was conducted in Brazil with the help of my colleague Thiago Luiz Ticchetti. The analysis was brief and to the point…

    ANALYSIS FROM BRAZIL

We have already analyzed the photos. According to our specialists, unfortunately, they are fakes:

    • The reflection of the sun in the object does not correspond with the position of the sun observed in the shade of the vegetation.
    • The shadow of the object itself does not match the position of the sun
    • The helicopter is real.
    • All the images are without EXIF

Ricardo Varela: Researcher at the National Institute of Space Research (INPE), electronic engineer at the Federal University of Brasília, master and doctor in applied computing

Inajar Kurowski: Veterinary doctor, university professor, police officer and criminal expert of the Institute of Criminalistics of Paraná, with specialization in vehicular identification and forensic ballistics. He is also a postgraduate in science methodology and a master’s degree in environmental management. Administrator of specific courses in the area, he became a specialist in examining photos and films of flying saucers

    SO WHAT ARE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS?

In an attempt to get to the bottom on these alleged UFO photographs the have been analysed by five different people from around the world. Jason Gleaves from the UK is of the opinion that they are the genuine article. Dr Bruce Maccabee from the USA is not sure whether they are fake or real and the same goes for Tobias Lingren in Sweden. And last but not least Ricardo Varela and Inajar Kurowski in Brazil left us in no doubt that they believe the photographs in question to be fake.

It is therefore my hope and intention that by releasing these photographs here that we may learn more about them. Perhaps other specialists will add their comments to those above or maybe someone will come forward who can offer testimony to either support the authenticity of the photographs or the opposite, show us that they are indeed fakes.

As yet the photographer does not want his identity revealing which is something I have honoured here but I do have his name on file. Perhaps the photographer will offer more information which will allow us to determine one way or the other the authenticity of the photographs. Until then I think it is only fair to say that the jury is still out. Are these photographs fake or genuine? We shall see.

The Carter Administration’s Attempt to Create a NASA UFO Commission

Forty-three years ago was the last time the U.S. government considered creating an official commission to investigate and report on UFOs. Despite Washington’s efforts to dissuade the public from any interest in UFOs through the 1969 issuance of the University of Colorado’s Condon Report, UFOs continued to appear. Eight years later, with President Jimmy Carter in office, his administration thought the time was right to officially request that NASA look into the phenomenon.

As put by a NASA scientist in a memo issued around the same time, however, “undertaking a formal [UFO] study at this time appears fraught with perils.” Needless to say, the commission was never finalized, and the 1977 deliberations between NASA, the White House, and other governmental agencies are an almost-forgotten episode in the official history of American ufology.

    Jimmy Carter, UFO Witness

The inauguration of Jimmy Carter as the thirty-ninth President of the United States ushered a new round of expectations in the UFO community. After all, it could be said he was a member of that community. President Carter, who was a former Georgia governor, peanut farmer, and U.S. Navy nuclear engineer, not only claimed to have seen a UFO but officially reported it. In terms of UFO data, President Carter’s sighting is not an impressive incident, falling into the category of nocturnal light. The sighting would surely be forgotten if Carter had not become the president.

Steven Spielberg mentions Jimmy Carter potentially releasing UFO information in this video.

The first account of Carter’s sighting appeared in October 1973—during that year’s big UFO flap—when dispatches from Georgia quoted the governor’s first statement on UFOs: “I’ve seen one myself.” The story was picked up in the press, prompting the International UFO Bureau in Oklahoma City and the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) in Maryland to send UFO questionnaires to the Georgia State Capitol. Carter personally filled out both questionnaires and gave permission to use his name as a witness. According to the questionnaires, the sighting occurred “shortly after dark” in October 1969 when Carter and ten other “members of Leary Georgia Lions Club” were “outdoors waiting for a meeting to begin at 7:30 p.m.” The sighting lasted between ten to twelve minutes and the object, located at “about 30 degrees above the horizon,” was described as “about the same size as the moon, maybe a little smaller, varied from brighter/larger than planet to apparent size of the moon.”

President Carter’s UFO story reemerged as he gained prominence during the 1976 presidential campaign. On June 8, the National Enquirer published a short interview with Carter in which he said, “I am convinced that UFOs exist because I have seen one,” adding that “I’ll never make fun of people who say they’ve seen unidentified objects in the sky.” In that interview, Carter also made an important promise to the American public: “If I become President, I’ll make every piece of information this country has about UFO sightings available to the public and the scientists.”

Ironically, the only ufologist to really investigate Carter’s sighting was skeptic Robert Sheaffer. The main clue was that Carter claimed to have seen the object while visiting the town of Leary to lecture at the local Lions Club. In his book, The UFO Verdict: Examining the Evidence, Sheaffer recounts that his effort to locate additional witnesses was difficult, but he was finally able to find one who remembered seeing, “like a blue light or something or other in the sky that night.”

However, Sheaffer soon discovered that there was a problem with the date given by Carter as the date of the sighting. Carter always said that in the sighting occurred in October 1969, but the Lions Club in Leary had disbanded in February of that year. Sheaffer eventually located the official records of the meeting at the Lions Club International Headquarters. The exact date of Carter’s speech in Leary was January 6, 1969, “nine months earlier than Mr. Carter’s recollection had placed it.” Furthermore, after computing the position of the planets for that date, Sheaffer discovered that “Venus was a conspicuous evening star, nearing its maximum brilliance. Venus was . . . at 7:15 PM, at about 25º elevation, in virtually the exact position where Carter had placed his UFO.”

The result of Sheaffer’s investigation was mostly ignored because it robbed the public of identifying the president as a witness to a genuine UFO. Yet, there is a high probability that what Carter saw could have been explained. The visual tricks that Venus can play in the eyes of the beholder have been known for decades by competent UFO investigators like Allan Hendry, who has characterized Venus as “the real champion” of the stars and planets that tend to cause UFO sightings.

The sighting, however, was only one aspect of President Carter’s link to ufology. The other was his campaign promise to release all the UFO data held by the government. Stanley Schneider, assistant to President Carter’s White House Science advisor Frank Press, later admitted to the New York Times that “public interest in this has been brewing for several months, slowly building up . . . It was getting to be more than we could handle.” In fact, so many letter about UFOs were sent to President Carter that Virginia ufologist Larry Bryant eventually published a book on the letters entitled, UFO Politics at the White House: Citizens Rally ‘Round Jimmy Carter’s Promise. One indicator of the campaign’s impact was revealed by U.S. News & World Report in its April 18, 1977 edition. Under the heading of “Official Word Coming on UFOs,” the magazine stated that “before the year is out, the Government—perhaps the President—is expected to make what is described as ‘unsettling disclosures’ about UFOs . . . based on information from the CIA.”

    NASA’s UFO Past

In an attempt to achieve UFO disclosure, the White House had difficulty in developing a coherent policy, and thus, NASA became the logical candidate. Unlike the U.S. Air Force, NASA had never been officially involved in the UFO controversy, although a link between the two surfaced occasionally. Popular UFO articles, books, and movies often displayed UFO photos taken by NASA astronauts, but the great majority of these images were explained by prosaic phenomena such as lens flares, booster rockets, or items ejected from space capsules.

While NASA never officially investigated UFOs, it did produce a few UFO-related documents such as the Kennedy Space Center’s “NASA Management Instruction (KMI 8610.4)” of June 28, 1967, regarding “Processing Reports of Sightings of Space Vehicles Fragments.” The four-page-document signed by the space center’s director, Kurt H. Debus, contained procedures dealing primarily with manmade space vehicles, but KMI 8610.4 added that “reports of sightings of objects not related to space vehicles” were also included: “It is KSC policy to respond to reported sightings of space vehicles fragments and unidentified flying objects as promptly as possible.” The document provided definitions of “Space Vehicle Fragment” and “Unidentified Flying Objects,” and KSC personnel were instructed to “call in unidentified flying object reports to the Patrick Air Force Base Command Post.”

Additionally, NASA’s name appears often in connection with mysterious space crashes such as the one in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania in 1965, which later led to a lengthy Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against NASA by journalist Leslie Kean. The space agency also appeared as a “forwarding” office in several declassified documents from other government branches.

NASA’s Response to the White House

It was against this background that NASA found itself tasked with official UFO responsibility early on in the Carter administration. That segment of the population that believed Earth was being visited by aliens had not forgotten Jimmy Carter’s campaign promise. The president’s science and technology advisor, Frank Press, became the White House official in charge of the UFO problem, but outside help was sought when the White House became overwhelmed with UFO mail. Press stated in his July 21, 1977 letter to NASA administrator Robert Frosch “that the focal point for the UFO question ought to be NASA.”

“There appears to be a national revival of interest in the matter with a younger generation becoming involved,” wrote Press, adding that “this is a public relations problem as much as anything else.” Press’s problems were twofold: First, the most immediate issue was how to deal with the growing number of correspondence regarding UFOs being received by the White House. Second, Press has to face the substantive issue of whether there was any truth to the UFO phenomenon and he believed that a new “panel of inquiry could be formed by NASA” to review the UFO evidence and “see if there are any new significant findings.”

First letter by White House science advisor Frank Press to NASA Administrator Bob Frosch stating that “the focal point for the UFO question ought to be NASA.”

Subsequent FOIA requests revealed that even before Frosch responded to Press on September 6, 1977 the U.S. Air Force was already meddling in the affair. One of the most significant and prophetic pieces of paper to come out of this period is a four-line letter written on September 1, 1977 by Colonel Charles H. Senn, the chief of the air force’s community relations division. The addressee was another former air force man, Lieutenant General Duward L. Crow, who was, at that time, the assistant deputy administrator of NASA. Along with an enclosed “UFO Fact Sheet and standard response to UFO public inquiries” that Crow had requested, Senn wrote, “I sincerely hope you are successful in preventing a reopening of UFO investigations.” Considering what took place in the ensuing months, when NASA literally turned down an official request from the White House, one does not need to be particularly conspiratorial to see that the air force was not a neutral party in this drama. Before Frosch’s response to Press was sent on September 6, the letter was rewritten twice by Crow.

Colonel Senn’s letter to retired Lieutenant General Crow, with a highly suggestive phrase about “preventing a reopening of UFO investigations.”

Bob Frosch’s letter was courteous, but not encouraging. The strategy for responding to UFO inquiries from the public through “form letters” and “information sheets” was discussed, as both NASA and the air force had discovered long ago that it was the most economical method. It obviously had its problems, continued Frosch, such as the lack of a “focal point for technical appraisal of sightings.” No quick action was to be taken regarding the proposed UFO panel or commission, wrote Frosch, “before . . . we should assure ourselves that an inquiry is justified.” His suggestion, therefore, was to name “a NASA project officer to review reports of the last ten years” and “provide a specific recommendation” by the end of the year.

Press’s response to Frosch a week later stated he was “pleased . . . that NASA can handle the public inquiries” so as to “relieve my staff of a responsibility we are not equipped to handle.” Frosch never said in his letter that NASA would handle the mail for the White House; instead, he had only referred to the air force and NASA’s experience in using form letters. Press agreed fully with Frosch that the NASA commission was something that should be weighed carefully and wrote, “I can understand your reluctance to commit the agency to a formal program.” He conceded that it was up to the space agency to review the UFO situation as it best saw fit.

NASA’s review of the UFO question was not a formal study, but an in-house analysis of the options available. The key document is a four-page memo, “UFO Study Considerations,” dated November 8, 1977 written by Dr. Noel Hinners, NASA’s associate administrator for space science. Dr. Hinners considered “the question of what NASA could reasonably do in both the short and the long term,” he wrote in his memo to NASA’s assistant administrator. The scientist went about his task in a straightforward manner, outlining succinctly the current UFO scene which included

    • “Widespread interest” with about half of the American population believing “something” exists;
    • Interest in forming a “specialized agency” in the United Nations;
    • A formal study group being set up by the CNES, NASA’s counterpart in France;
    • Several solid private UFO organizations in the USA “with responsible membership”;
    • An increase in reports of what Hinners referred to as “the near encounter type”; and
    • A wider acceptance within the UFO community of a government cover-up, meaning not only that the Government “knows far more than it has released,” but that it “may even have pieces of UFO hardware in hand.”

Dr. Hinners analyzed the problems facing a NASA UFO review: the “apparent lack of any tangible or physical evidence for laboratory analysis,” and the “absence of any sound scientific protocol for investigating the phenomenon firsthand.” The word “apparent” in the first line is to be noted while the word “absence” in the second line is questionable. After three decades of amateur investigations, by 1977, civilian UFO organizations had achieved a degree of this so-called “scientific protocol.” Other problems outlined by Dr. Hinners were the abundance of “secondary source materials” or “hearsay”; the prejudices on the part of investigators; hoaxes; “the delicate interface,” as Hinners put it, between the government and UFO witnesses; and “the danger of projecting an inaccurate NASA or Administration image.” Dr. Hinners’s conclusion was that, “all in all, undertaking a formal study at this time appears fraught with perils.”

First page of Dr. Noel Hinners’ key internal NASA document, “UFO Study Considerations,” of November 8, 1977. Image credit: NASA/Huneeus Collection

Dr. Hinners presented two choices to NASA. The first option was to reject the White House’s idea for “the Federal government and specifically NASA, to investigate the UFO phenomenon.” As Dr. Hinners opined, this option would give added fuel to the “charges of cover-up” by the UFO community, but it would also avoid “controversy . . . within the science community NASA deals with.” There were budgetary advantages too in keeping the current policy of form letters and not spending extra resources, but Hinners had the intelligence of pointing out that choosing this option “would also be begging the question.”

The second option was for NASA to consider creating a commission to investigate the topic. This option seemed almost identical to the early, positive days of the Condon Committee. Basically, Hinners’s thought was that the commission could request major UFO organizations “to submit their ‘best’ cases,” put “this material into a usable format,” update and revise it, and finally “ask for a peer review.” On the basis of this preliminary study, NASA would decide whether some form of permanent UFO investigative branch should be established. Hinners also recommended something that was later used by Bob Frosch in his final and formal rejection of the commission that, “as a minimum, having gone so far and this publicly, NASA should stand ready to investigate new hard evidence that might come in.”

In late November 1977, the White House decided to go ahead publicly with formally requesting a NASA UFO commission. The wire services carried the story and quoted David Williamson, NASA’s assistant for special projects, saying the agency was “not anxious” to study UFOs. Like Dr. Condon, Williamson appeared to disqualify any existence of UFOs before any official conclusion had been reached. “There is no measurable UFO evidence such as a piece of metal, flesh or cloth,” he said.

When Bob Frosch finally responded to Frank Press on December 21, 1977, nobody in Washington was surprised. The main theme was “the absence of tangible physical evidence available for thorough laboratory analysis” coupled with the willingness to analyze “any bona fide physical evidence from credible sources” submitted to NASA. Frosch also mentioned the lack of “a sound scientific procedure for investigating these phenomena” as a reason that a study “would be wasteful and probably unproductive.” The shadow of Dr. Condon, deceased since 1974, seemed to pervade this letter. Condon had concluded eight years earlier that science could not be expected to gain anything by studying UFOs. Frosch reached the same conclusion without even embroiling himself in a thousand-page report at a cost of over half a million dollars. After turning down the White House’s request, Frosch left a way out, just in case, writing, “I wish in no way to indicate that NASA has come to any conclusion about these phenomena as such; institutionally, we retain an open mind, a keen sense of scientific curiosity, and a willingness to analyze problems within our competence.”

In 1978, NASA released its revamped “Information Sheet No. 78-1” on UFOs. It stated that other than answering UFO-related mail sent to the White House, “NASA is not engaged in a research program involving these phenomena, nor is any other government agency.” The six-page document was an updated version of the old air force form letter, yet NASA added an interesting paragraph not to be found in the Pentagon’s counterpart: “Reports of unidentified flying objects entering United States air space are of interest to the military as a regular part of defense surveillance. Beyond that, the US Air Force no longer investigates reports of UFO sightings.” In other words, NASA provided an admission that NORAD and the U.S. military still keep an eye on UFOs with possible national security implications. The NASA document quoted extensively from the administrator’s letter about the “bona fide physical evidence” and lack thereof.

It is interesting to see how quickly and effectively the government muzzled this revival of UFO interest. Although numerous FOIA lawsuits were being pursued by researchers, many months and even years would pass before some of these documents were obtained, processed, and publicized. But, the interaction between the White House, NASA, and the U.S. Air Force during this little known episode in President Carter’s administration offers a window into how the federal government deals publicly with ufology. The failed NASA UFO commission attempt by the Carter administration in 1977 is the last time the U.S. government even considered launching a new formal study. Given the current state of affairs in Washington, it’s extremely unlikely that a new effort will be attempted anytime soon, but the phenomenon itself is certainly not likely to go away.

Colonel Senn’s phrase becomes reality in this AP newswire story published in the NY Times on December 28, 1977, “NASA Refuses to Reopen Investigations of U.F.O.’s.”

The Glowing Vision of a UFO Observed Over Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador Comes to Life on New Royal Canadian Mint Collector Coin

OTTAWA, OntarioOct. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The Mint has added to its extra-popular Canada's Unexplained Phenomena series by telling the strange story of the 1978 UFO sighting in the skies of Clarenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The Clarenville Event is vividly illustrated on a new glow-in-the-dark collector coin that captures the moment an RCMP Constable and multiple witnesses observed the mysterious lights and oval shape of an unidentified flying object hovering near the city of Clarenville. The Mint is now accepting orders for this mesmerizing coin.

2020 $20 Fine Silver Coin - The Clarenville Event reverse.jpg

Working with a canvas-like rectangular coin, East coast artist Adam Young has recreated the events of October 26, 1978, when Clarenville made UFO history.  On that night, RCMP Constable James Blackwood responded to a call from astonished onlookers. When he arrived at the scene, witnesses directed his attention to a brightly lit object in the sky. Using binoculars and a high-powered scope, they observed the fin-tailed, oval-shaped craft as it hovered above the water near Random Island. It emitted no sound; and when the officer flashed the lightbar on his police cruiser, the mysterious craft instantly mimicked the lights. It remained in the area for nearly an hour before rising up suddenly and vanishing into the night, leaving no traces of its passage – except a credible eyewitness account.

"I wanted this piece to include all the elements of the 1978 experience while also incorporating the rugged yet whimsical coastline so often found in the Newfoundland landscape," explains Adam Young. "Light and line direction were also important aspects of the design, creating a circular visual flow throughout the composition. This has been an exciting artistic endeavour, which, throughout my research for the design, has caused me to tumble down the rabbit hole of other Canadian UFO sightings."

True to the scene described by witnesses that night, luminescent elements on the coins shine through when exposed to a black light. The rectangular $20 Fine Silver Coin - Canada's Unexplained Phenomena: The Clarenville Event has a limited mintage of 5,000 and retails for $129.95.

This new collectible may be ordered as of today by contacting the Mint at 1-800-267–1871 in Canada, 1-800-268–6468 in the US, or at www.mint.ca.

UFOs, Flying Saucers and the Bender Mystery

    by Charles Lear

In the early years of the flying saucer mystery, the U.S. Air Force was the only organization doing any sort of significant investigation. Then, in 1952, a number of private groups were organized and the first citizen investigators went into the field and endeavored to solve the mystery for themselves. The first of these to rise to global attention was the International Flying Saucer Bureau, founded by Albert K. Bender. They put out a quarterly publication called Space Review, and were taken seriously by their fellow enthusiasts. They didn’t last long, however, as Bender put an end to his creation in 1953 after telling his followers he had solved the mystery. He later informed them he’d been visited by three men wearing black suits and homburg hats, who’d threatened him into keeping silent about his discovery. The mythos of the Men in Black entered flying saucer lore and the Bender Mystery became a subject that is still being debated today.

Albert K. Bender was born on July 16, 1921 in Duryea, Pennsylvania. What the “K” stood for seems to be part of the mystery. He served stateside as a dental technician in the U.S. Army Air Forces from June 8, 1942 to Oct. 7, 1943. He was stationed at Langley Field, Virginia. After his service, he moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut with his mother and stepfather. His mother died shortly thereafter.

Bender lived in the attic, which had a bedroom and a den. He was employed as the chief timekeeper at the Acme Shear Company. It may have been a conscious nod to his profession or just an ironic coincidence, but Bender had twenty clocks in his living space that all would ring, chime and clang every fifteen minutes.

The clocks were just one of the many manifestations of Bender’s eccentric nature that increasingly expressed itself as he entered his late twenties. He was a fan of horror movies, ghost stories and the occult. He adorned his attic space with Halloween decorations, fake skulls, shrunken heads, rubber spiders and snakes, and his own macabre paintings. When friends came over, he put on recordings of spooky noises and enjoyed showing off what he called his “Chamber of Horrors.” His offbeat interests and living space were interesting enough that an article was written about him and published in the May 25, 1952 Sunday Herald, a local Bridgeport newspaper.

Flying saucers were added to Bender’s list of interests and they eventually became his chief interest. Bender and some friends formed the IFSB in April 1952 and its membership quickly grew beyond the borders of Connecticut. The first Space Review, put out in Oct. 1952, included a list of representatives in 14 states and one in Ontario, Canada. Bender had a letter announcing the formation of the group published in the Dec. 1952 issue of the Ray Palmer publication, Other Worlds. The letter captured the attention of Flatwoods Monster investigator, Gray Barker, who contacted Bender and expressed his desire to become a member. Bender convinced him to become the state representative for West Virginia.

Barker would later become the chief investigator for the organization and he became good friends with many in the group. By this time, the group had lived up to its name and was truly international. There were chapters in South America, Europe, and the IFSB was in contact with newly formed organizations in Australia and New Zealand. They inspired people all around the world to form their own groups and citizen investigators were here to stay. The IFSB, however, was not. Barker wrote about the events leading to its demise in his 1956 book, “They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers.”

According to Barker in his book, he received a letter from Bender dated Sept. 16, 1953. It contained the mysterious instruction not to accept any more memberships until he’d seen the Oct. issue of Space Review. He then received a letter on tape from New Jersey based member, Domonic Lucchesi. This was common among members as, according to Barker, a saucer investigator without a tape recorder “is considered almost a non-entity.”

Lucchesi described being present when fellow member August C. Roberts called Bender to cancel their planned visit because of car troubles. In the course of the conversation it came out that Bender was unsure whether there would be another issue of Space Review after October. Bender then said he’d discovered the secret of the flying disks and told Roberts about the visit by the three men. He said they confiscated his copies of back issues of the magazine and, as an American citizen, he was sworn to secrecy about his discovery.

In the Oct. 1953 Space Review, Bender announced, “The mystery of flying saucers is no longer a mystery.” He apologized for not being able to elaborate saying, “because of the nature of the information we have been advised in the negative.”

Barker got in touch with Roberts and suggested Roberts and Lucchesi go to Connecticut and speak to Bender in person. Barker emphasized it was important they remember everything that was said. They were sure Bender wouldn’t allow a tape recorder or a note pad and Barker suggested Roberts should slip away to the bathroom periodically where he could make notes unseen. He could tell Bender he’d taken a laxative or had bowel issues. Roberts complained he wasn’t a good actor and Barker suggested he should actually take a laxative.

Roberts and Lucchesi interviewed Bender and, while they didn’t get the answer to the mystery, they did get some interesting replies to some of their questions. He told them the government had known what the saucers were for two years and if they didn’t tell the public in the next five months, it would be four years before they did so.

After the Oct. 1953 issue, only three more issues of Space Review were published. These were for the members that didn’t want refunds. Flying saucers were not even mentioned and the articles focused solely on space. The IFSB was closed.

Barker was putting out his own magazine, The Saucerian, and he reached out to his readers to help him solve the Bender Mystery. Some of them speculated but no one came up with a convincing explanation.

The Aerial Phenomena Research Organization had formed in the fall of 1951 just prior to IFSB. APRO’s director, Coral Lorenzen, offered the suggestion in the Nov. 15, 1953 APRO Bulletin that a pulp magazine publisher (Ray Palmer?) had been funding IFSB and had backed out. Lorenzen reasoned that with no funds to run the organization, Bender had made up the story in order to be done with it. Barker assures the reader in his book that this was not the case.

David Houchin, curator of the Gray Barker collection at the Clarksburg-Harrison Public Library in West Virginia, came up with a theory during a Gray Barker tribute on the radio show “Exploring the Bizarre.” Houchin presents a scenario based on two letters to Bender that are housed in the collection. According to him, a man in Clarksburg suffered an epileptic seizure and was taken to the hospital. Someone had taken his wallet but he had Barker’s IFSB business card on him. An official visited Barker and interviewed him in an attempt to identify the man. Barker claims in his book that the official showed him FBI credentials while Houchin feels he was probably a local police detective. Barker got paranoid, called Bender and got no answer because Bender was on vacation. He then wrote to Bender that he’d been investigated by the FBI and others should expect the same. Barker also called Washington, DC based member Rev. S. L. Daw, and gave him the same information. Daw had been seeing flying saucers everywhere, was taking pictures and some of them were taken at a restricted site. The day after Barker called him, three actual FBI agents visited him and he wrote a letter to Bender to tell him about it.

Bender came back from his vacation to find Barker’s and Daw’s letter waiting for him. Houchin suggests this panicked Bender and he adopted Daw’s three-man scenario as an excuse to shut down the organization.

Barker played up the paranoia in his book and the MiB mythos took root. Bender wrote his own book, “Flying Saucers and the Three Men”, which was published by Barker through his Saucerian Books in 1962. In Bender’s book, the three men become three ethereal creatures with glowing eyes from the planet Kazik, pronounced with a long “a” and a silent “z.” Could Kazik have been what the mysterious “K” stood for in Bender’s name? Bender’s book was met with dubiousness by most in the flying saucer community.

There are now three major speculations making the rounds in UFOlogical and paranormal discussions on radio, the web and in literature. One is that Bender came up with a story to get out of the flying saucer business, one is that he was visited by MiB of either governmental or extraterrestrial origin and the third is that his interest in the occult caused him to call up some entities he couldn’t get rid of. Where one comes down on the Bender Mystery is a good indication of one’s place in the world of the paranormal.

The Majestic 12 Documents: Who Really was the Mysterious “Falcon”?

Over the last few days I have written  articles on the Majestic 12 documents, the Paul Bennewitz affair, Stan Friedman’s FBI file, and (briefly) the mysterious “Falcon,” someone “on the inside” and who may have been the primary source for the aforementioned Majestic 12 documents. All of the above people and subjects were inter-connected in various ways. But, who was the Falcon? Well, let’s have a look. In 1999, Gerald K. Haines – in his position as the historian of the National Reconnaissance Office – wrote a paper titled “CIA’s Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90.” It’s now in the public domain, thanks to the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. It can be read at the CIA’s website. Haines’ paper detailed the history of how, and why, the CIA became interested and involved in the phenomenon of UFOs. Although Haines covered a period of more than forty years, I will bring your attention to one particular section of his paper, which is focused on the 1970s-1980s. Haines wrote: “During the late 1970s and 1980s, the Agency continued its low-key interest in UFOs and UFO sightings. While most scientists now dismissed flying saucers reports as a quaint part of the 1950s and 1960s, some in the Agency and in the Intelligence Community shifted their interest to studying parapsychology and psychic phenomena associated with UFO sightings. CIA officials also looked at the UFO problem to determine what UFO sightings might tell them about Soviet progress in rockets and missiles and reviewed its counterintelligence aspects.”

The Soviets, then, were camouflaging their secret rocket tests by spreading false and fantastic tales of UFOs. Haines also noted something that is absolutely key to the story that this book tells and particularly so with regard to the Majestic 12 papers: “Agency analysts from the Life Science Division of OSI and OSWR officially devoted a small amount of their time to issues relating to UFOs. These included counterintelligence concerns that the Soviets and the KGB were using U.S. citizens and UFO groups to obtain information on sensitive U.S. weapons development programs (such as the Stealth aircraft), the vulnerability of the U.S. air-defense network to penetration by foreign missiles mimicking UFOs, and evidence of Soviet advanced technology associated with UFO sightings [italics mine].”

What about those “U.S. citizens” that Haines referred to? Let us see. The 1970s and 1980s were the decades in which Paul Bennewitz was most active, at least in terms of his UFO research in and around Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was almost certainly one of those Americans who Haines was talking about and whose actions the CIA’s counterintelligence people were worried about. That the U.S. Air Force was very concerned by the possibility that Bennewitz was unknowingly being used by the Soviets, was reason enough alone to practically force-feed Bennewitz with almost unending, nightmarish horror stories of dangerous and deadly aliens under Dulce, New Mexico. And, then, have Bill Moore report back on the extent to which those same horror stories were destabilizing Bennewitz’s increasingly paranoid mind. All of this strongly suggests that Moore may have been as much a victim as Bennewitz was: both men may have been fed wholly bogus material. Interestingly, Haines actually references Shandera and Moore’s work on the Majestic 12 documents in the “Notes” section of his very own paper.

Another aspect on this particular part of the story: Maybe Moore was used, but not just by U.S. intelligence. It should be noted that, as Greg Bishop said, the Falcon had what was described as an eastern European accent. He may well not have been an American, which suggests the incredible theory that the Russians may have been running the program to learn all they could from Bennewitz. Or, maybe, there was more than one Falcon, which really serves to complicate matters. Based on private data provided to him by sources in the know, Greg Bishop has concluded that the Falcon was a man named Harry August Rositzke; he ran covert programs for the CIA, after cutting his teeth in the heart of the Second World War-era Office of Strategic Services.  Rositzke, a Brooklyn native, was an expert on the matter of Soviet intelligence, the KGB, and Russia’s programs designed to destabilize the West with carefully crafted propaganda. Rositzke, who died in 2002 at the age of ninety-one, wrote a number of non-fiction books on the world of espionage, including The KGB: The Eyes of Russia and The CIA’s Secret Operations. Rositzke, it’s important to note, did not have a European accent. That revelation adds further weight to the possibility that there may have been competing Falcons; one, Rositzke, an American trying to protect U.S. government secrets. The other? An unknown European (or Russian) character posing as an American official, and using the same alias of the Falcon, and trying to further disrupt U.S. intelligence.

The final words go to Encyclopedia.com, who stated of Rositzke: “After he retired, Rositzke spent his time on his cattle farm and wrote books about spy activities between the United States and the Soviets, always maintaining that secret intelligence agents helped to stabilize political relations by providing America with much-needed information.”

I found a reptilian head on mars. The face is certainly unusual and even has a long tubular appendage coming out of its lower nose area. The mouth is open. Its ears are small, its eyes are small but its head is slightly elongated. The original color of the photos was fake red/brown, but I put it into natural color. The color of the face is unique. It has orange, blue and grey throughout it. This unique and strange reptilian face might explain the strange sculptures and civilization artifacts we have been finding on Mars. Such an unusual alien probably has a equally unique culture and way of life. One that we could never relate too.

I was looking over Google moon map which is easy to use. Just open Google Earth, then hit the button to switch to moon map. I found some highly unusual structures on the moon. The kind that NASA would never report about find for fear the public would learn about the existence of intelligent aliens so close to Earth.

Near Drygalski crater there is some smaller craters and I found some finger like structures in two long craters. The fingers were close to 7km long according to Google ruler. The length of the structures along the edge of Drygalski crater is 118km across! Now these are huge structures with absolutely smooth surfaces. More like a glass-like windows of structures for aliens to look out and see space. This is 100% proof that NASA hides alien evidence from the public.

Possible Directed Energy Weapon caught beaming at Tyndall Air Force Base Space Wing, Florida

If its us beaming out to ourselves, testing some sort of laser.. creating a hot spot for some reason at ground level.. then we can move on and let them deal with moving to different frequencies to prevent civilians seeing it.

If its not us beaming down causing a hot spot on ourselves, then we've got problems.
October 9, 2020 350am Central time - This video from Dutschsinse documents (real time) a directed energy weapon beam which has been caught on Weather Satellite beaming down directly at Tyndall Air Force Base (space force communications base), along the coast of Florida, creating a hot spot at the location receiving the beam as well.
A beam of energy shooting down next to our Space Communications Wing base resulting in a physical hot spot being detected.
A second beam was captured beaming down to the SW Louisiana Lake Charles Nexrad Radar station.
It would appear both beams reside in the shortwave Infrared spectrum, and are targeting in on our United States radar systems along the coast of the Gulf. Targeting first at the Nexrad along the coast of Louisiana, then a 2nd beam down at Tyndall AFB (the beam location showing an actual hot spot on thermal return via GOES 16.

    What is interstellar space?

You might be surprised to learn that interstellar space isn’t just vacuum. It’s full of gases, elements, and dust – very thinly spread, to be sure – but the building blocks of stars and planets.

A graceful ripple of dust in space.

In this infrared image from NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, winds flowing out from a fast-moving star (Zeta Ophiuchi) are making ripples in the dust in interstellar space.

    Image via NASA.

Interstellar space – the space between the stars – isn’t just empty space. There’s a lot of “stuff” out there, including hydrogen (70%) and helium (28%), formed in the Big Bang that set our universe into motion. The other 2% of “stuff” in interstellar space is heavier gases and dust, consisting of the other elements made inside stars and spewed into space by supernovae. The material in interstellar space is very spread out. It’s denser in some places than in others, but a typical density is about one atom per cubic centimeter. Still, even the most dense regions of interstellar space count as vacuum, compared with our earthly air.

Our sun controls the conditions around our solar system, but outside of that is interstellar space and all that it contains.

Astronomers call this space between the stars the interstellar medium.

Straight line with sun and planets on one end, heliopause marked, and wide Oort cloud at other end.

Diagram of the solar system showing planets, heliopause, and interstellar space. The numbers shown are astronomical units (AU), where 1 AU is the distance between the sun and the Earth.

    Image via NASA/ JPL-Caltech.

    Why is interstellar space important?

The interstellar medium is where stars are made. Without it, we wouldn’t exist. If there weren’t thick and thin spots that condensed into thicker patches that eventually became stars, the whole universe would just be a cloud of boring, cold, lifeless gas.

The thick parts of the interstellar medium are called molecular clouds – often referred to as stellar nurseries – the places where stars are born. The first stars didn’t have planets because there weren’t any materials in interstellar space beyond hydrogen and helium. But, over the billions of years of our universe’s history, that has changed.

It changed because stars themselves make increasingly more complex elements in their interiors. When the most massive stars grow old and die, they explode as supernovae, releasing their elements into interstellar space. Thus it has become possible for stars to form with planets and for at least one planet we know of, Earth, to harbor living things.

Given the contents of interstellar space, and process by which stars and planets are born, it seems highly likely that other planets have living things, too.

Pink cloudy space with many bright stars and small, irregular black globules.

This intriguing view of spectacular stellar nursery IC 2944 was released to celebrate a milestone: 15 years of ESO’s Very Large Telescope. This image also shows a group of thick clouds of dust – known as the Thackeray globules – silhouetted against the pale pink glowing gas of the nebula.

Our solar system, and spacecraft, in interstellar space

The sun is our local star. It’s about 870,000 miles (1.4 million km) across, approximately 100 times wider in diameter than our planet Earth. It would take more than 965,000 Earths to fill up the volume of the sun. Earth is one of the smaller planets in our solar system.

A stream of charged particles emanates from the upper layers of the sun’s atmosphere; this stream of particles is known as the solar wind. The sun – and its solar wind – create a kind of cavity that envelopes our entire solar system, known as the heliosphere. The heliosphere is like a balloon, with our sun and planets inside the balloon. Outside the heliosphere is interstellar space.

Neptune, the farthest of our solar system’s major planets, is 30 times the distance from the sun as Earth. We call the distance from Earth to the sun an astronomical unit (AU), so Neptune is at a distance of 30 AU.

The edge of the heliosphere is four times as far, at about 120 AU.

The heliosphere is moving through the space of our Milky Way galaxy. As it moves, the part of the heliosphere that faces the center of our galaxy receives more pressure than the side that faces away, so the heliosphere is stretched out into a teardrop shape.

Large orange sphere with arrows pointing to a tiny dot at its center.

A comparison of the size of Earth and the sun.

View larger. | Illustration of the positions of the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft – the farthest spacecraft from Earth – now both outside of the heliosphere, in interstellar space. Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause, or the edge of the heliosphere, in August 2012. Heading in a different direction, Voyager 2 crossed another part of the heliopause in November 2018. The Voyagers revealed that the size of the heliosphere changes. It seems to “breathe” in a way related to the level of the sun’s activity, getting bigger when the sun is active, and shrinking when it’s quiet.

    Image via NASA.

Presumably, every star creates its own bubble around itself. At the edges of all these billions of “heliospheres,” stars leak particles and electromagnetic radiation into space, further feeding the interstellar medium.

Once you have traveled past the inner edge of the heliosphere, there is a region called the termination shock that is like white-water rapids in a stream.

Finally it smooths out and you enter the heliopause, an area where the internal pressure of the sun’s effect balances with the outside pressure of the interstellar medium. It is very still, where you finally enter interstellar space itself.

About that “vacuum” of space …

When we talk about space, we often think of vacuum where there is absolutely nothing for us to breathe. Earth’s atmosphere is quite thick at sea level. It extends well above the International Space Station (ISS), but it is so thin that after a few hundred kilometers, it’s almost as if it isn’t there. Earth’s atmosphere may finally end around 6,700 miles (10,800 km) above Earth’s surface, or higher, depending on whom you ask.

On Earth at sea level, a cubic centimeter of air has 30,000,000,000,000,000,000 molecules in it, or we could say 3 with 19 zeros after it, but for convenience, we write it as 3 times 10^19. So in a volume just a little bit smaller than a normal die, there is an unfathomable amount of molecules.

At Mount Everest’s peak there are is a bit more than 10^18 molecules in the same volume, and, at the altitude of ISS (~350 km or a little over 200 miles up), there are only 1 million (10^6) molecules per cubic centimeter – and the same for the thin atmosphere of the moon.

In comparison, interstellar space only has about 1 atom per cubic centimeter on average, although this number varies from 100,000 to as low as 0.01 depending on if you’re in  a molecular cloud or in the space in between the clouds. Either way it’s about as close to an absolute vacuum as you can get (not counting intergalactic space where the number is even lower …).

Layers of atmosphere with typical things in them such as planes, auroras, and spacecraft.

    The layers of Earth’s atmosphere.

    Graphic via NOAA.

    • Bottom line: Interstellar space is the space between the stars in a galaxy. It’s not “empty,” but, overall, it’s as close to an absolute vacuum as you can get. Molecular clouds are places in interstellar space where the material is collected most densely. Within these clouds, new stars and planets are born.

Inside the secret lives of synchronous fireflies

In the Smoky Mountains, thousands of fireflies flash in unison. Researchers want to know how.

    De bronafbeelding bekijken

It’s a sight to behold: On June evenings in Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains National Park, thousands of male fireflies all flash together in near-perfect harmony. These fireflies, also called lightning bugs, flash with a distinct rhythm: a few quick bursts of light followed by a several-second pause, then more bursts. In person, the display looks like a wave of light passing over the hillside.

A team of researchers from University of Colorado Boulder wanted to understand how relatively simple insects manage to coordinate such feats of synchronization.

Their new study, published September 23, 2020, in the peer-reviewed Journal of The Royal Society Interface suggests that, rather than flash according to some innate rhythm, the fireflies observe what their neighbors are doing, then adjust their behavior to match.

To date, scientists have struggled to explain how the fireflies’ synchronization works. University of Colorado researcher Raphaël Sarfati is lead author of the new study. Sarfati said in a statement:

Is it something hardwired in fireflies that makes them want to synchronize? Or is it something more context dependent, maybe based on their environment?

As study co-author Orit Peleg describes it, the firefly display is over almost as soon as it begins. Males belonging to the species Photinus carolinus only flash for about two weeks every June, and then just for a few hours a night. She said:

Studying them is a constant race against time.

    Fireflies in the wild

For their research, the team drove to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee in June 2019. There, they set up two 360-degree cameras in a wooded area to map out the locations of the bugs flashing in their vicinity. The group also assembled a pop tent on site and introduced a few fireflies at a time to the isolated environment. Sarfati said:

It was, basically, like we were one of the fireflies in the swarm.

The researchers discovered that the fireflies don’t behave the same way when they’re alone as when they’re in a big group. For example, the team found that a single male firefly alone in the tent would flash without a good sense of rhythm, a few bursts here, a few bursts there. But with more fireflies in the tent, things began to change. Sarfati said:

When you start putting 20 fireflies together, that’s when you start observing what you see in the wild. You’ve got regular bursts of flashes, and they’re all synchronized.

That suggested to the researchers that the fireflies likely aren’t hardwired to flash with a particular pattern. Instead, their light displays seem to be more social. Bugs watch what their neighbors are doing and try to follow along.

The group’s findings, Peleg said, could help researchers learn more about a range of other synchronous behaviors in nature. She said:

This kind of synchrony occurs in many natural systems. The cells in our hearts all flex and contract at the same time. Neurons in our brains also synchronize.

The researchers noted that insect species that their glow to attract mates have found themselves competing for attention with human sources of light. Many species are on the decline around the world because there is more and more light pollution. Peleg said she doesn’t want to see the glow from these insects disappear:

There always was this last half an hour at night where we were tired and sitting in the forest, waiting for the fireflies to stop flashing. It was the most relaxing part of this work.

Truth-seekers spot 'UFO' being 'followed through sky' by mysterious orbs

A man claims to have captured footage of a UFO being chased by orbs in the skies above Japan and the clip was debated by believers on conspiracy theory YouTube channel The Hidden Underbelly 2.0

By Sofie Jackson - Video News Reporter

Footage of an alleged "UFO" cruising through the skies near a volcano in Japan has sent conspiracy theorists wild, with some claiming it is being chased by smaller craft.

In the clip, recorded at Kagoshima City in Japan, a large bright object appears in the night sky above the urban area, with the silhouette of Sakurajima volcano behind.

As the shiny object zips from the right of the frame to the left, a group of smaller-looking lights that appear to be flying in a triangle formation appear and follow in its wake.

The footage was spotted by Chris M who sent it to the popular YouTube conspiracy theory channel The Hidden Underbelly 2.0 where it had since been viewed more than 1,000 times.

A bright object appears in the sky and is 'persued' by a cluster of other objects

A bright object appears in the sky and is 'persued' by a cluster of other objects

In the caption, he explained: "These objects were seen by the viewers of this live stream that is set up to monitor the Sakurajima volcano."

Unsurprisingly, the clip drew an enthusiastic debate about whether the lights were UFOs or not.

"That's a fantastic capture, definitely one large one and then a smaller group following," commented one believer.

A second conspiracy theorist said: "Mother ship trying to fly away from her baby ships. In all seriousness though, it was very good footage".

"There's always UFO activity near volcanos, like the one in Mexico," wrote another fan.

A fourth viewer, speculating that it might be advanced technology, commented: "The concept that comes to mind when I see these clusters that change back to a singular light or appear to stutter is maybe they move at a frequency that is not native to our perception.

"Certainly wouldn't blow my mind If that were the case."

More cynical viewers claimed the footage was simply "drones" or perhaps a "reflection".

This comes after a strange "metallic" object was spotted on the International Space Station (ISS) live feed, sparking a frenzy of conspiracy theories.

The Bizarre UFO Crash at Dreamy Draw, Arizona

Some of the most sensational UFO accounts are those that revolve around these strange craft coming down to earth. The Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, in the U.S. state of Arizona, is a rugged desert park next to Piestewa Peak, formerly called Squaw Peak Mountain. The area is known for its quaint beauty, hiking and horseback riding trails, and opportunities for all manner of outdoor activities. Looking out over these vistas tales of UFOs and aliens might be the furthest thing from one’s mind, but if the local lore is to be believed this was the site of a very unusual case in which a UFO came crashing down to earth, complete with alien bodies and which according to some is still there somewhere.

The story begins in 1947, in fact not all that long after the more famous alleged UFO crash at Roswell. While the story has changed into slightly different variations over the years, the main lore has it that in October of that year, two men by the names of Silas Newton and “Dr. Gee” witnessed a strange object come thundering down to earth to crash near the mountain, and the curious pair went to investigate. They supposedly arrived to find strange wreckage and the area strewn with several bodies of four-and-a-half-foot tall humanoid creatures with oversized heads, all of them dead. The men purportedly then collected these bodies and stowed them in a meat freezer until they could figure out what to do with them and who to tell. Apparently, they wouldn’t have the chance to tell anyone, as the men were soon after visited by mysterious men in black suits, who whisked the bodies away and told the witnesses in no uncertain terms that they were not to say a word to anyone about what they had seen and found.

    Dreamy Draw Recreational Area

After this, the story goes that the government moved into the area with U.S. Army personnel, and not only that, but the Army Corps of Engineers had then went about building the Dreamy Draw dam right over the remains of the fallen spacecraft. It is said that the place didn’t need a dam at all, and the only reason it was built at all was to cover up the evidence of the crash, at least according to the tale. The case is most well-known from the 1950 book Behind the Flying Saucers, by Frank Scully, but there have been numerous people since then who have stepped forward with further information on the otherworldly events. One letter sent into Legends Magazine is from an anonymous sender who has a lot to say about the site, and the letter reads:

I have more to add on the crash at dreamy draw. I’ve been hiking there for years and have noticed the bizarre features at the water retention site – built by the U.S. Army corps, – the dam area – which is off limits to all, has an “excessive” amount of posted signs – threatening 5yrs/$10,000 fine every 50 ft, there is also electronic monitoring of the “vault” – which is more like a concrete “bunker”- from WWII, this pillbox is located at the low point inside the “fake” retention area. Firstly, I’ve never seen any water there, for its location is not where watershed from squaw-peak mtn could be trapped. Why is it there? Behind a huge iron door inside the bunker, [I believe] grants entry to inside the vault to monitor / keep secure what is entombed within the dam structure itself. There is a spillway on the outside of dam – you can’t get near it – but its fake, made to look functional. Most of all, I know how un-thorough the government has been with crash site clean-up, maybe they couldn’t get everything – just west of secure area, there’s a hill with a rocky out-cropping and underneath in the shady areas, mold is growing – abnormally diverse and thick, shouldn’t even be there, I’ve counted 5 types/colors, its bizarre – nowhere on that mountain/trails, have I seen moss/fungus so pronounced.

Closer looking around the outcrop, I noticed the rocks in places, looked more like metal than rocks, silverish – some kind of liquid had made contact and dripped down inside the crevices, I pulled some of the rocks from the fissures and found it more abundant as it had clotted up in places. It looked organic, but nothing you could identify it with, this stuff now dried up was obviously a liquid at one time, must have been like soup, thicker than water – in the way it pooled down in the cracks of rock. The dried-goo was opaque/pearl green and I noticed it had reacted different to various rock types, the soft sandstone shale it bonded with/ dried on top, the harder quartz looked like a corrosive had made contact and pitted/dissolved areas like acid, this didn’t make much sense

I selected some of the more “choice” examples and decided to hike back to the truck with them – cradled in my right forearm. I placed them on a floor matte in the truck-bed & drove home. Driving down the freeway I started rubbed my arm-not thinking about it like a tickle/itch, after doing this for some time I said to myself – “what is it” like a insect bite or something, realizing those rocks had rested there for approx 10 min hiking back, it was like cleaning your battery posts and making contact with the acid on your elbow or something- there was a welt there and so I washed it in the kitchen sink, but then decided to shower, it vanished quickly. A few days later, “the rocks”- disappeared from the side of my house, I later found my girlfriend had put them out in the yard as landscaping decor – adding they looked cool there, and liked the “weird colors”. I only go hiking on the weekends, but haven’t been in a few weeks – its been hot! I been to the out cropping 4 times and every time I return, I’ve noticed something more to add to the story.

What is going on here and is this person for real? There have also been reports of people in the area of the dam reporting strange phenomena such as sudden spells of dizziness or inexplicable panic attacks, as well as those who claim to hear an inexplicable humming in the area. One witness calling himself Trevor Freeman has said of his own experience with this to Weird Arizona:

So I went to check this place out after school. It’s Monday afternoon, hardly anybody is around. I’m pedaling around on my bike and I find the dam. It’s fenced off pretty well and there are LOTS of No Trespassing signs everywhere. Pretty high security for an earthen dam with no water behind it! I take some pictures, look around, and I see the outfall of the dam buried in the bushes. I ride around to the other side and hike down into the low area. There’s a large concrete box with a fence on 3 sides. As I am getting down towards the bottom, I hear this steady, low-pitched humming noise. I can’t figure out what it is! Is there really a UFO buried beneath this thing? As I glance around to see if anyone’s watching, a plane crosses the sky. The place is not TOO far from the airport, but it’s still close enough to hear jets taking off. That’s probably what I heard. The lesson is that you’ll never realize how much weird stuff is out there until you start looking!

It is all very intriguing, and the idea that a UFO crashed here and was covered up by a dam really stirs the imagination, but there are definitely cracks in the tale. One is that the supposed UFO crash doesn’t seem to have ever been covered by any actual news agency at the time. Everything we know about it comes from unverifiable accounts, secondhand reports, and rumors, as well as brief mentions in Scully’s book Beyond Flying Saucers, as well as Timothy Good’s 1987 book Above Top Secret, and little else. Also a rather glaring hole in the story is that it seems that the dam was actually not built until 1973, which seems to put to rest the allegations that it was made to cover up a 1947 UFO crash. UFO researcher and journalist Alejandro Rojas has dug into the case by visiting the area and poking around, and he has come away frustrated, saying:

What I sought to do is figure out what happened at Dreamy Draw… all I could find is there were rumors, there was a witness who claimed to have seen something happen either in Cave Creek or Paradise Valley or Dreamy Draw. Unfortunately, before I could speak to this witness directly he passed away.

Yet the conspiracy theories and reports remain, and there are even those who insist that the dam was not built in 1973, but rather much earlier, with the date of construction itself said to have been altered in order to aid the cover-up. The same goes for newspaper reports, with it being suggested that the same mysterious men in black who visited the original witnesses also went about silencing any news stories that might appear. It has also been pointed out that the whole Dreamy Draw Dam area is very locked up and plastered with no trespassing signs beyond what one would expect for a dam. Is there anything to this story, or is it merely a piece of UFO urban legend? We may never know for sure, and although this is most likely a tall tale, it has still managed to enter the lore of UFO crashes.

Huge Bird-Sized Butterfly Found Living in Chernobyl Radiation Zone

Multiple Russian media sources have released shocking reports and photographs of a huge butterfly the size of a bird found living and seemingly thriving in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone – one of the most dangerous and radioactive places on Earth. Should the brave souls attempting to move back to their homes near the failed reactor get some bigger nets?

How big is too big for a butterfly?

“A butterfly with a wingspan the size of small bird was spotted in the Chernobyl exclusion zone by employees of the region’s Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, who reported the encounter on the organization’s Facebook page.”

While thousands of people have died or been affected by the radiation released during and after the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster in 1986, scientists monitoring the exclusion zone around the remains of the plant – a “zone of alienation” extending 30 km (19 mi) in all directions from the plant where maintenance workers can only stay for five hours a day – say it has become a radioactive nature preserve where flora and fauna have survived and in many cases thrived due to the lack of humans. One group that did not is insects. Virtually all invertebrates disappeared from the exclusion zone, causing some animals and birds to look for other food or move. That’s why the bird-sized butterfly spotted in the area recently had people both excited about its existence but concerned about its seemingly mutant size. (See the photos here — those in the image at the top are not the ones in Chernobyl.) Fortunately, entomologists jumped in quickly with an explanation.

“The office of the science department visited an unexpected guest – a rare butterfly Blue Ribbon (Catocala fraxini). He’s still called the blue order tape. The butterfly is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine (vulnerable species)

This insect is one of the largest representatives of butterflies living in Ukraine and in general in Europe. The length of his front wing can reach 45 mm and the wingspan in flight is up to 110 mm. Butterfly is nice in flight.

Blue tape – active at night, flies to the light. You can see the scientists ′′ on the light “.
When the rain stops, the butterfly will be moved to its favorite tree – poplars.”

The Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve issued a statement on social media identifying the butterfly as known a blue underwing (Catocala fraxini). With wings extending to 4.33 inches in flight, blue underwings are often mistaken for birds in areas where they still live. A species whose territory once covered Europe, it is now nearly extinct in the UK and a threatened species in Ukraine.

Should those working in Chernobyl protect themselves from these huge butterflies?

Why, when other insect species stay away from the exclusion area, has this monster butterfly returned? While it may look like a normal blue underwing, the researchers don’t know if it has been negatively affected or even mutated by the radiation. Insects initially disappeared from around the 2011 Fukushima disaster area in Japan, but butterflies have since returned and show signs of abnormalities. In particular, pale grass blue butterflies are smaller, grow more slowly and have higher mortality rates than before. Occurring almost 30 years later and with much more free and open media reporting on it, more is known about the effects of that disaster than Chernobyl, which still suffers from government secrecy.

The scientists at Chernobyl and Fukushima say they’re studying the radiation damage on wildlife to better prepare for future disasters. That’s not comforting at all. While it may be exciting to them that a huge bird-sized butterfly can live in a radioactive area, there’s still plenty of dead canaries in this coal mine.

Bruno Facchini with a blended artist's impression of the incident over the top

A Bizarre UFO Close Encounter in Italy

UFO encounters happen all over the world, to all types of people, and some of these are stranger than others. Our tale here revolves around a humble factory worker by the name of Bruno Facchini, in the town of Varese, of northern Italy, about 55 km north of Milan. He was known locally as a good, honest, hardworking man who never made trouble and was not prone to tall tales, yet on April 24, 1950 he would gain quite the tale to tell. On this evening there was a serious thunderstorm, and so when it passed he stepped outside during his shift at work to check for any damage that might have been caused by the storm. When he got outside the storm had mostly moved off to become flickers on the dark horizon and some low grumblings from the thunder, but while the storm was gone something altogether odder was in its place. And so would begin one of the strangest UFO cases in Italian history.

    Bruno Facchini

He says that he saw there not too far away a strange flickering glow or sparkle, which he at first took to be a damaged power transformer, but as he drew closer to investigate it turned out to be altogether weirder. He approached to see a somewhat circular, glowing object with a flattened top that sparkled and looked like a “crushed ball,” and as he approached even nearer, he could see that the object was “squared by vertical and horizontal stripes, placed at regular intervals.”  On the top of the outlandish object was a greenish glow, and even more bizarre was that there was a rectangular open on the bottom of the craft, and a ladder that seemed to have dropped down from it. Bathed in the eerie glow of the object were several small figures, as well as another at the top of the ladder, all of them wearing what looked like grey diving suits of some kind, complete with helmets, masks, and tubes. He says that the two beings outside seemed to have been engaged with welding something on the bottom of their ship.

    Facchini Incident Artist's Impression

    Facchini Incident Artist’s Impression

At first, he had the impression that these were human pilots who had crashed and were in trouble, and he says of what happened:

Next to a power line pole I saw a huge, round shape. From the illuminated disc, a ladder came down. A door opened. I could see inside the UFO, because a light diffused inside, there was another ladder leading to a higher level of the craft; on the walls, there were bottles connected together in rows and between them I could notice that there were gauges and tubes. In the middle [of the shape] there was a small ladder, lightened by a green light. Almost immediately, I understood that the light came from some sort of lamp handled by a standing man who seemed to be engaged in welding. He wore something like a diving suit and a mask. Driven by curiosity, I went closer, and I saw two other people, with the same clothing, moving slowly around the craft – I guessed that their diving suit was heavy and slowed down their movements. The craft, lighted by the welding tool, cast metallic reflections back.

I offered to help, but the only answer I received were some guttural sounds that were not understandable. I wondered what their intentions were. I had the feeling they were inviting me aboard. Suddenly I heard an uproar, like the amplified buzz of a bee, or a huge power generator. I saw another ladder in the interior of the craft, and all around, tubes, cylinders, and gauges. I understood that this was not a plane, and I was seized by panic, I started to run away. I was not so close anymore when I turned my head back. I saw one of the men raise some sort of apparatus he carried at his side and beam a ray of light in my direction. I started to run again, but immediately, I felt as if I was cut in two parts by some cutting tool or by a jet of compressed air and I fell flat. I kept running, but at the same time I had the impression of being reached by a blunt force or to be more precise, by a powerful jet of compressed air, and I fell to the ground, more than right on the edge of one of the border stones that bounded the fields.

They seemed not to be interested in my anymore. I am convinced they only wanted to scare me and had no intention to do anything wrong to me. They were busy in removing the scaffold and withdrawing the ladder. Then the door closed. All the lights went out. And the buzzing sound continued. Suddenly the sound became louder. The craft took off, gained speed and disappeared.

He now knew that these were no human pilots, and he was filled with horror and panic, and when he looked back, he could see the strange beings board their ship, which then shot up into the sky with tremendous speed and that buzzing sound that sounded like an angry beehive. The whole ordeal left him shaken and confused, and the following morning he went to the police to tell his far-out story. The skeptical officers who went to the scene were surprised to find large patches of burnt ground, as well as strange indentations and what seemed to be circular footprints of some type. There were additionally found shards of a strange, green metallic substance, which would later be analyzed to find that they were a sort of heat-resistant, “anti-friction” material composed of 74% copper, 19% tin, traces of Silver, Aluminum and Magnesium, and other trace elements, as well as some sort of unidentified lubricant.

Making this all even odder than it already is, around a week after his bizarre encounter, Facchini says that he began to have certain unusual physical symptoms, which he connected with the incident. He claimed that his back had become bruised and turned a sickly yellow, precisely where the beam had hit him, and he also complained of mysterious headaches and bouts of dizziness and nausea. A visit to the doctor would also supposedly turn up a strange black mark where the beam had hit. When he had an interview about his experiences in 1981, he claimed that he was still suffering from lingering physical effects such as headaches and inexplicable hot flashes and fevers, as well as profound psychological trauma. He has never backed down from his story, but we are left to wonder what happened to him. Was any of this real at all, or is it a delusion? With no hard evidence and those metal shards having since disappeared we are left to speculate, and it remains a very strange case with no concrete answers.
