Mars rover grabs first rock sample, a major step in hunt for alien life
NASA’s Perseverance rover will cache this pristine sample and others for return to Earth, which will “change everything for Mars science.”
With the whirr of a drill, a robotic geologist some 244 million miles away just made history, collecting the first sample of Mars for return to Earth. Sealed in an airtight, ultraclean tube, the sample is an important milestone in a multibillion-dollar effort to finally answer the question: Was there ever life on the red planet?
“For all of NASA science, this is truly a historic moment,” Thomas Zurbuchen, NASA’s associate administrator for science, says in a press release.
This sample is only the first of dozens to be collected in the coming months. The rover will ultimately deposit its cache on Mars's surface, and a future mission will scoop it up and transport the rocks to eager earthbound scientists.
"It feels kind of surreal," says Vivian Sun of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), who co-leads the mission's first science campaign. "What we're doing right now is going to impact Mars science for a long time."
In addition to sampling, Perseverance is equipped to sniff, taste, and peer at the Martian landscape in greater detail than ever before, helping scientists unwind the planet's watery past and seek out hints of Martian microbes that may have once thrived in now-vanished rivers and lakes. The stage for this dramatic search is Jezero Crater, a 28-mile-wide basin carved by a meteorite impact billions of years ago.
Perseverance touched down near the crater's rim in February 2021 after a harrowing, seven-minute plunge through Mars's thin atmosphere. Though the ground under the rover's six wheels is now parched, the ruddy rocks and sand hold clues to a past flush with water. The science team will explore this region with the rover’s advanced suite of instruments, selecting samples from the crater floor up through an ancient river delta and beyond.
"We are going to be surprised," says Nina Lanza, a planetary scientist and team lead for Space and Planetary Exploration at Los Alamos National Laboratory. "We are going to learn things that we never could have imagined."
Jezero's geologic intrigue
Scientists believe Mars was once blanketed in a thick atmosphere, which helped trap enough heat to keep water from freezing and produced enough pressure to stop the liquid from evaporating and escaping as gas. But at some point the atmosphere thinned, and Mars's climate took a dramatic turn. By three billion years ago, the planet was parched, and Mars became the red dustball we see today.
Exactly why and how this happened remains unknown. Jezero's rocks offer a chance to study this dramatic transformation, capturing the key slice of time during which the great drying took place. "As we explore different parts of the crater inside Jezero, we have the potential to kind of step through time," says Kathryn Stack Morgan, a deputy project scientist at NASA's JPL.
Jezero is a crater within a crater. The planetary pockmark is perched on the western edge of the Isidis Basin—a sprawling crater about 750 miles wide blasted out by a huge space rock some 3.9 billion years ago. A later impact sculpted the inner rocky bowl now known as Jezero. Then came the water.
Winding rivers spilled over the crater rim, feeding what became an ancient lake. The water slowed as it poured into the basin, causing suspended sand and mud to settle to the lake bottom and form a pair of deltas, which fanned out around the branching waterways.
The rover will explore the dried remains of the crater's larger delta, which is cradled in Jezero's western edge. This delta's rapid buildup of sediments could have readily buried and preserved signatures of life—if it did exist—before the rivers dried up roughly 3.5 billion years ago.
A breach in the rim opposite this sandy fan, known as Pliva Vallis, marks where water once flowed out of the lake. The presence of both an entry and exit suggests that the lake waters were constantly refreshed, preventing salts from building up to levels that could have been harmful to many forms of life, and perhaps making Jezero prime real estate for microbes to thrive.
"As a geologist, I can't help but get excited for understanding Mars history," says Bethany Ehlmann, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology.
"Poorly behaved rock"
To collect Jezero’s geologic bounty, Perseverance’s sampling system is composed of a trio of robots that work in tandem to drill cylinders of rock, seal them in airtight tubes, and deposit them into a storage rack within the rover's belly. "It's a spacecraft within a spacecraft," says Ian Clark, a systems engineer at JPL who is part of the Perseverance team.
During Perseverance’s first sample attempt, the rover targeted an interlocking mosaic of light red-brown stones that make up swaths of the crater floor—perhaps the oldest rocks the rover will find in Jezero. Hints from orbit and the rover's analyses on the ground point to a volcanic origin for these "paver stones," as the team calls them. If that's the case, returning these rocks to Earth would allow scientists to precisely date them using radioactive elements, helping piece together the region's complex past.
But the first sampling attempt left the team empty-handed. While the rover's sampling system initially seemed to work as planned, the sealed tube remained empty. Later analyses suggested that the rock's interaction with ancient water whisked away much of the geologic glue binding it together, which caused the sample to crumble to bits under the coring drill's percussive strikes.
The team hasn't given up hope for sampling the crater floor, and they plan to eventually look for less weathered paver stones to drill, Ken Farley, a Perseverance project scientist, writes in a blog post.
But for their second and most recent drilling attempt, the team directed the rover west to search for rocks "as different as possible" from the paver stones. The rover zeroed in on a boulder on top of a nearly half-mile-long ridge called Artuby. Standing tall above the landscape, the boulder appears to have resisted eons of battering, which suggested it'd be tough enough to withstand drilling.
The sampled boulder appears similar to other rocks poking up from the crater floor, sometimes called "high-standing rocks," says Roger Wiens, a planetary scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory and principal investigator of Perseverance's SuperCam. Early on, the team planned to sample one of these high-standing rocks as well as the paver stones. “But we wanted to start with what we thought would be the easiest, which would be the softer ones—and, uh, oops,” Wiens laughs.
Now the newly stashed core confirms that the first sample was "just poorly behaved rock," as Farley suspected, rather than an issue with the rover’s mechanisms for drilling and storing the cores.
Collecting more samples—and sending them home
With the first sample safely stowed, the rover will soon double back east and then move northward to the delta, studying the rock formations along the way. One type of feature that scientists are eager to scrutinize is finely layered rock. Such laminations can be found on Earth in sediments deposited by water, wind, or sometimes volcanoes.
In water, laminations accumulate from the slow deposition of mud one layer at a time, which could have preserved traces of life in Jezero, as well as the chemistry of the now-vanished lake—providing "a true archive" of the conditions in which the rocks formed, says Keyron Hickman-Lewis, a geobiologist at the Natural History Museum in London and a return sample scientist on the Perseverance mission.
Layers are common in deltas, including the one in Jezero, but the rover also spied promising laminations in rock units on the crater floor. At a July 21 press briefing, Farley pulled up a picture of a crater floor deposit that looks like an uneven stack of brown papers. "This is exactly the kind of rock that we are most interested in investigating," he said. But scientists are still working out what processes formed these rocks, whether they're sediments, volcanics, or a mix of both, Wiens says.
Up on the delta, two other attractive targets are clays and carbonate minerals, which Caltech’s Ehlmann and her colleagues first spottedin Jezero using orbital data more than a decade ago. On Earth, carbonates often have close ties to life and can preserve exquisite structures, such as the finely wrinkled layers of ancient microbial mats known as stromatolites. Clays can rapidly entomb organic material, and if any exists on Mars, they may be shielding it from the destructive cosmic radiation that blasts the planet’s surface.
Another intriguing possible target for study is manganese-rich rocks. Manganese minerals can form in many ways, but microbes sometimes have a hand in the process.
Los Alamos’s Lanza and her colleagues suggested in a recent study that cyanobacteria could produce manganese-rich varnishes that commonly coat rocks found in deserts around the world. The microbes may use the minerals as a sort of sunscreen, protecting themselves from harsh ultraviolet radiation.
Manganese was previously spotted on Mars in nearby Gale Crater, where the Curiosity rover is busy with its own investigations. The team thinks they might have found some in Jezero too, but they are still working to confirm its presence and determine how much is there. Manganese on Mars can come in many forms and may create a similar veneer on rocks within the crater.
"If we see anything that's like rock varnish, we really should stop and take a closer look," Lanza says.
Finding life as we know it
Once dozens of samples have been collected and cached, another mission will have to land on the planet to pick them up. NASA and the European Space Ageny are designing a lander equipped with a "fetch rover" that could launch as soon as 2026.
A small rocket on the lander would carry the precious rocks into orbit around Mars, where an orbiter would grab them and take them back to Earth, releasing the samples in a small probe that will crash land in the Utah desert.
After the samples are safely back on Earth, scientists will use sophisticated tools to unlock any secrets held within the rocky remnants. But even then, steep challenges lie ahead in the search for ancient alien life. Experts debate what kind of evidence would be enough to identify extremely early life-forms, even on Earth. Claims of life that existed billions of years ago on our planet have driven multiyear feuds and cut schisms between scientists.
One recent debate involved a series of 3.7-billion-year-old rocks on the southwest coast of Greenland. In 2016, a team of scientists declared that a set of wrinkled triangles in the rock were traces of microbial activity, which would make them the earliest known fossil life. But JPL geologist Abigail Allwood and her colleagues were suspicious. When they returned to study the outcrop, a different picture emerged. The wrinkles weren't caused by churning microbes, but by geologic processes squashing the stone.
"There's nothing like standing there in front of the outcrops to give you an understanding of what's going on. You can't do it through a lens of a camera," says Allwood. Her words catch as she realizes what she's saying, and she adds with a chuckle, "which is exactly what we're trying to do on Mars."
Since the human team can't physically stand on Mars, Perseverance is equipped to give them a look at the rocks on multiple scales—from landscape-wide images right down to chemical analyses of pinprick-size bits of the rock. Allwood is the principal investigator for Perseverance's PIXL instrument, which can take images of tiny features and use x-rays to measure the chemistry of Martian rock.
Still, only so much can be sussed out from afar, which is why sampling is so important. When those samples come back, they will provide the first up-close look at pristine material from the red planet. As Lanza says: "It's going to change everything for Mars science."

Edinburgh Airport UFO leaves family startled as flying saucer caught on film
The truth is out there and it may well be closer than we thought after a schoolboy captured a shocking video of an unidentified craft hovering in the skies above Edinburgh Airport

A family have been left stunned after a close encounter with a UFO in the skies above Edinburgh Airport.
Jack McKnight had been filming planes taking off and landing on the runway in the Capital afternoon when he captured the shimmering object hovering overhead.
The 12-year-old, who was attending the Truckfest Scotland event with his mum, sister Jade and her son, saw the unexplained craft magically appear and then vanish within a minute.
The schoolboy told the Daily Record the experience left him ‘a bit scared’ of going to bed on Monday night, but family members have sought out UFO experts for clarity on what they saw.
The family, from Lanark, all have an interest in aeroplanes and decided to film them taking off from nearby Edinburgh Airport while tracking them on a flight radar app.
The unidentified shape appeared in the video as Jack was filming a Norwegian aeroplane take off from the runway.
Jack said he was “shocked” when he discovered the strange shape on the video when he got home.

He said: “I was out taking pictures of aeroplanes and I didn’t realise there was this object until I got home.
“It is a kind of metallicy or silvery colour.
“One minute it appears and then just disappears.
“I was so surprised when I got home, I was just scrolling through my pictures to show my mum.
“I had actually made a joke about there being aliens and then we show that.
“I have always wondered what it would be like to see one but I was actually a bit scared last night going to bed.”
The family contacted a UFO specialist and the video is now under investigation by the British UFO Research Association.
Jack’s sister Jade, 26, told the Record: “I have never followed anything to do with aliens or UFOs before but we had no idea what this was.
Chief of Space Operations Gen. John Raymond unveiled the “Guardian Ideal” document Sept. 21 at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber conference
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. — The U.S. Space Force in a new document calls for a different approach to recruiting and retaining skilled personnel, arguing that service members and civilian workers should have more flexibility to make career choices than under the traditional military personnel system.
Chief of Space Operations Gen. John “Jay” Raymond unveiled the “Guardian Ideal” document Sept. 21 at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber conference. During a keynote speech, he said the document is “aspirational” and is intended to highlight the service’s core values and goals for developing its workforce.
“We must think differently about talent management for the Space Force to be successful,” says the Guardian Ideal.
“While all guardians will require a level of digital fluency to be successful, the Space Force also requires a cadre with mastery of digital competencies to include agile software development, software product management, product lifecycle management, data architecture, data analytics, cyber security, cyber defense and information technology infrastructure.”
These are skills that are also in high demand in the civilian economy so the Space Force needs a strategy to compete for talent. The Guardian Ideal calls for a “new talent management approach to tap into and build upon each person’s unique strengths.”
Raymond said guardians should be able to work full-time or part-time depending on their specific career paths. “They could go work for NASA, for private industry” and go back and forth, he said. That flexibility is not possible under the current military personnel system.
Patricia Mulcahy, the Space Force’s chief human capital officer, told reporters at Air Space & Cyber that some of the flexibilities sought by the Space Force will require congressional approval and legislation. But the Defense Department already has some authorities it can exercise, such as the ability to bring in private-sector workers for temporary assignments.
“This new talent management ideal is different from the current military and civilian human approaches, so support from both Congress and the Department of Defense will be necessary and crucial to enable it,” says the document.
Space Force leaders contend that existing models of military recruitment designed to bring in large numbers of people and train them in narrowly defined and limiting specialties is incompatible with the service’s needs.
The service is proposing a tailored approach to acquire new talent to “fill priority shortfalls wherever they may exist,” the document says. That may require exemptions and waivers from current service requirements.
Other highlights from the talent strategy:
The Space Force must strive to become a truly digital service, which will require enhanced levels of digital fluency for every guardian.
A cadre of “Supra Coders” will form the core of the Space Force’s software coders, data scientists and information technology experts that will lead digital efforts across the force.
To attract and retain workers the Space Force will tailor policies and practices to create more equity and flexibility.
The Space Force will invest in individuals where their interests, strengths, and potential intersect with the service’s current and future needs.
The document includes a “Guardian Commitment” in support of four values expected of every guardian: character, connection, commitment, and courage.
Don’t ask the Pentagon about aliens. Tracking UFOs flying hypersonic circles around F/A-18F Super Hornets is job enough without speculating on extraterrestrial origins or who (or what) could be behind the wheel.
Don’t ask the Pentagon about aliens. Tracking UFOs flying hypersonic circles around F/A-18F Super Hornets is job enough without speculating on extraterrestrial origins or who (or what) could be behind the wheel.
The long-awaited June 25 “Preliminary Assessment” to Congress on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence was silent on what these…things are — although it acknowledged they “probably do represent physical objects” and “clearly pose a safety of flight issue.” But the report pointedly avoided the question of whether they might be off-earth vehicles.
Yet some humans say they know what they know: We are not alone.
They are called experiencers – a word that describes nothing – because their experiences seem so impossible to imagine: Encounters with non-human entities, which sometimes involve UFOs and sometimes do not. Kary Mullis, who shared the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, wrote of a night in Mendocino County, California, in 1985 where he encountered a glowing, talking raccoon who greeted him with “Good evening, doctor,” after which Mullis found himself the following day some distance away with no recollection of the intervening time or any memory of a spacecraft.
Ordinary people acknowledge these experiences. So do celebrities. The rapper Kendrick Lamar told the Howard Stern Show in 2017 that at age 6, he had seen a UFO fly by and was asked if he thought he’d been abducted by aliens. “I probably did,” he said. “That’s probably why I’m doing music right now. Who knows? They probably gave me the energy.” Earlier, he had told JoJo Wright’s radio show, “I’ve seen ghosts before, for sure. I’ve seen UFOs too. I’ll never forget that, and that was my encounter, and still to this day, I know there is something else out there.”
The singer Demi Lovato has referenced their own “experiments” as well, announcing in May that they were producing and starring in a forthcoming four-part UFO series, “Unidentified with Demi Lovato,” for the NBCUniversal streaming service Peacock; Episode 1 is scheduled to air on the 30th of September. “Demi is a true believer, and during this courageous adventure, [Demi] hopes to convince [their] friends, family, and [their] millions of followers that not only are there intelligent beings beyond Earth but that they are already here!” the announcement said. “Demi plans to learn enough about the extra-terrestrials through interviewing scientists, alien abductees, and [their] own experiments to initiate those close encounters and make peace with the aliens, and ultimately save ourselves.”
The rapper Lupe Fiasco told a Los Angeles radio station in 2012 of an “extra-worldly experience” at age 11 when he saw a black disc at his window and felt paralyzed, “surrounded by all this electricity.”
Representatives of Mr. Lamar and Ms. Lovato did not respond to numerous interview requests. A publicist for Mr. Fiasco said, “he’s passing on speaking about his experience.” Other stars with reported UFO encounters include Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, and Tom DeLonge, who founded a study and entertainment group, To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science.
Jay Christopher King, a 42-year-old Jersey City artist who co-hosts an online support group of some 200 fellow experiencers, remembers his childhood fright at seeing a short grayish creature crouched in front of the family’s basement washing machine rummaging through the dirty laundry. More recently, he says, he has encountered spindly mantis-like beings that communicate telepathically in florid English — and Latin.
He knows it sounds crazy. “Now,” he says, “you’re diving into the deep end of the swimming pool.”
For Karin Austin, a 52-year-old former interior designer, construction project manager, and small business owner in Colorado working with an online group of fellow experiencers to advance Disclosure of secret UFO data, it was finding herself one night in her twenties far from her bed in a crowd of other humans in pajamas in a forest clearing near an abandoned roller coaster. There, she says, a tall skinny being presented her with a strange-looking little boy as her hybrid son.
Incredible, she agrees. But she’s convinced it happened, in some unknown dimension of reality, especially after finding a sketch of the same scene she remembers in a book by another experiencer. She has given up hope of being taken seriously. “People just think we’re…nut jobs.”
Other experiencers who also agreed to share their stories are participants in the support group co-hosted by Jay Christopher King and organized by Stuart Davis, an experiencer, artist, musician, and filmmaker in Boulder, Colorado, with a podcast “Aliens & Artists.” (Their accounts, below, have been condensed.)
Human encounters with gods, angels, fairies, ghosts, spirit animals, and other entities have been staples of folklore, religion, and myth since the dawn of recorded history, but space creatures quickly permeated mass culture with the postwar flying saucer boom. The lack of scientific evidence of extraterrestrial visitations did little to slow the avalanche of bestselling books and blockbuster movies.
Skeptics have laid the experiences to delusions, sleep paralysis, or other natural aberrant conditions.
Recent years, however, have brought growing physical confirmation by Navy ships and warplanes of unidentified flying objects, what the government now prefers to call unidentified aerial phenomena. In 2017, in The New York Times, we revealed that a secret Pentagon unit called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, or AATIP, was documenting their astounding aerodynamics while leaving aside questions of their origin, intelligent control, or occupants.
Yet UFOs and aliens remain inextricably linked in the public mind, especially after history’s first widely-publicized abduction case 60 years ago.
On the night of September 19th, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill were driving home through New Hampshire’s White Mountains when, as they later recounted in hazy recollections augmented in hypnotic regressions, they were overtaken by a flying disc and put aboard by gray humanoids with enlarged cat-like eyes and bulbous craniums. They recalled intrusive pseudo-medical exams before being released physically unharmed but deeply traumatized, unable to account for missing hours, stopped wristwatches, their strangely magnetized Chevy, badly scuffed shoes, and a torn dress.
A 2014 article in Scientific American, “Alien Abduction or ‘Accidental Awareness’?” cited studies by Britain’s Royal College of Anaesthetists and a Columbia University psychoanalyst, David V. Forrest, attributing abduction experiences like Barney Hill’s to hospital memories under anesthesia. It cited similarities between the accounts of intrusive probes by humanoid beings and operating room procedures, hypothesizing that Barney may have experienced a flashback to an earlier tonsillectomy, akin to recovered or sometimes false memories studied by PTSD researchers. Yet that would hardly explain Betty’s similar recollections or the bits of physical evidence — consistencies that deeply perplexed their psychiatrist, Benjamin Simon.
The phenomenon was next explored by two unlikely researchers, Budd Hopkins, an artist, and David Jacobs, a Temple University history professor. Both hypnotized their own experiencers and grew convinced that the recounted abductions were literal, occurring in our reality, by alien beings with an agenda hostile to humanity. Hopkins was particularly struck by the alleged missing time effetct that left experiencers mystified over lost hours and dimly recollected traumas.

In 1990, a Harvard Medical School professor of psychiatry, John E. Mack, who had won a Pulitzer Prize for a psychobiography of T.E. Lawrence and written books on borderline psychiatric states and nightmares, met Hopkins and grew captivated by the accounts of stupefying interactions with alien beings told by seemingly ordinary people from all walks of life and even young children.
Defying ridicule, they usually reported seeing a UFO after which alien beings materialized, commonly in their bedrooms but also sometimes outdoors, in their cars, or in one case, a snowmobile. Immobilized, with companions rendered comatose, they recounted flights through walls or closed windows into craft for examination and frequently the extraction of eggs from women and sperm from men for the apparent breeding of hybrid offspring that the abductees might later meet.
Their aversion to publicity and absence of any evident psychopathology, the consistency of their accounts, and agonizing affect in relating their experiences, occasional witness corroboration, as well as certain physical evidence like unfamiliar scars and association with sighted UFOs convinced Mack that something unfathomable yet real had indeed happened to them. Many emerged with a heightened concern for the despoiled planet and a loving connection to the beings and all creation.
But Mack grew to differ with Hopkins and Jacobs that the experiences were clearly literal, happening in our reality. Instead, he came to think they seemed more likely liminal, something less than completely physical, or perhaps penetrations from another dimension. His evolving position angered some of his experiencers who feared abandonment.
Mack wrote two books documenting his case studies, “Abduction: Human Encounters with Aliens” (1994) and the more nuanced “Passport to the Cosmos” (1999), appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show with some of his experiencers, met with the Dalai Lama, was written up widely in mainstream publications, and lectured extensively. Embarrassed by the publicity, Harvard convened a secret committee to investigate his practice but ultimately found no cause for discipline. He was run over and killed in London by a drunk driver in 2004, days before his 75th birthday.

How many people have undergone, or may still be undergoing, alleged abduction experiences seems indeterminable. But online chatter and a profusion of experiencer support groups suggest that the phenomenon, whatever its nature and extent, is still out there, mysterious as ever.

Jay Christopher King. When I was about 6, we moved to a house in Indiana that had what people called haunted phenomena. The movers stacked up these huge book boxes, my father’s old textbooks and engineering manuals. The next morning we discovered they had all been rearranged in a checkerboard pattern. Once I woke up to see a little boy my age playing with my toys. We heard later that a boy had once killed himself in the basement.
Afterwards, in a different house, I was about 9 or 10, in bed. I look and there are two beings, four and a half feet tall, gray-like. One to my left was holding a chrome rod about 18 inches long. It started raising the rod device just as the other one started moving toward me. I passed out.
Two weeks after or a few days later — this is something you want to forget, not remember — I was walking up the stairs from my bedroom to the kitchen. The stairs had slats so I could see through to the laundry room. Bizarrely, one of the beings was in the laundry seeming to be rifling through the clothes that were in front of the washing machine. For the next year and I half I ran up and down the steps!
In my 20s, when I lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, sometimes there would be a hum and oddly the winter air would rush in almost as if a section of wall disappeared. The first time I saw a mantis I was confused because some grays are tall but mantis beings are even taller with a different body structure. At first I thought of them as grasshoppers. They have a different form of telepathic content.
The way you receive telepathy from a gray is more line by line, like receiving a telegram. Mantis beings have a much more elegant way of speaking. I also started picking up communication from a voice speaking in Latin. This entity was very interested in science and space. It made some criticism of us using fire and smoke to get off-planet and was strongly advocating for a device that seemed to involve plasma.
One evening in 2017, I had a feeling of being watched. A bizarre rectangular doorway developed on the wall. It looked like an amber and gray screen composed of pixels. A very large mantis stepped about halfway into the room, hunched over, about 6 feet tall, projecting through the portal. I spoke my mind. “Why tonight? Are you physically here?” It stepped further through, extended a long thin arm as it cocked its head looking at me. It reached its delicate fingers over the bedroom door and opened it further. That was its answer.
You don’t necessarily choose to be an experiencer, but I’m really hopeful for the experiencer community. We can work on this ourselves. We don’t need the vast world to validate this stuff. We have each other.
Karin Austin. I was born in St. Petersburg, Florida. When I was about 3, several beings woke me up from sleep; they were very friendly. I tried to call my mom in to show her, but watched them leave through my closed window before she made it into my room. Another time, I was playing outside with a bubble gum machine a friend of my mom’s had just given me as a gift. In a spliced-film kind of missing-time moment, I suddenly found myself running into the house without the bubble gum machine. We never found it.
Many years later, during a session with John [Mack], I easily recalled being outside playing with the bubble gum machine when a glowing object, egg shaped, appeared. Two gray beings with large black eyes emerged from it and asked me to go with them. They escorted me into a kind of shimmery room with curved walls, clinically white and misty. I found myself standing in front of a boy who was just a little older than me.
He had a being on either side of him. He spoke with a Scottish accent. The beings asked if I was willing to share my bubble gum machine with him. I agreed. He took it, they left, and I was returned home. I ran back to the house to tell my mom but instantly couldn’t remember what I wanted to share with her. Part of my memory was wiped.
Every experiencer will tell you when we share details like this, we know we sound insane.
Up to age 25 I would have said I was not an experiencer. But then, one night I “woke up” from a terrifying experience that didn’t quite fit the definition of a dream. I found myself at the edge of a forest clearing, standing alongside some 50 or so other human beings, all in various stages of night undress. I could see an old wooden roller coaster partially obstructed by trees.
Also present were a number of small-adult-size, skinny beings managing the gathering. I watched as one of the beings walked toward me. From a distance she looked like she could have been human and she had with her a shorter being who seemed to be a kid. As she stopped in front of me, I realized he didn’t look exactly human.
The taller being, apparently a caregiver of sorts, didn’t look entirely human either. In shock, it dawned on me I was interacting with some kind of alien-human hybrid life form. The adult caregiver kept pushing the boy, this hybrid, toward me. I kept pushing back, insisting there was a mistake. (I had had my tubes tied the previous year, after deciding not to have kids.) Finally, I understood she was telling me this child was mine.
I blacked out. The next second I was sitting straight up in my bed, severely dehydrated. I stumbled to the kitchen and drank an entire gallon of milk. I then found myself checking my body for marks. I recognized my behavior was strange. My fiancé thought it was a dream, but it felt real.
The next night, we were watching TV, and Whitley Streiber’s “Communion” came on. The movie showed two kids running down a path toward a flying saucer that was floating above a lake. The kids suddenly stopped and turned around. I instantly let out a scream and crawled up the back of the sofa, completely traumatized. They looked exactly like the hybrids I had seen just the night before in my “dream”!
Many years later after I met John [Mack], he was writing a foreword for Jim Sparks’s book [“The Keepers: An Alien Message for the Human Race”]. I happened to see an illustration that had been drawn for it. It showed the very same woods I had been in at the clearing, with a roller coaster in the background! Jim had obviously been present during the same encounter but was apparently in a different position in the woods.
When Laurel Chiten put her sizzle reel out for her documentary “Touched,” a guy from Canada reached out to Laurel and she put him in touch with me. He had been raised in Scotland. He talked about an incident that happened while playing in a forest as a kid.
He had been taken somewhere by two non-human beings into a white, misty room with curved walls, where he was introduced to a young girl who agreed to give him a bubble gum machine. Apparently, he later walked out of the woods without remembering how he got it. He told me he had kept it for a long time. Stunned, I asked if he still had it. He said he got rid of it when he moved overseas.
Robin Lassiter, 41, medical office manager in Grand Junction, Colo. I grew up with one older sister in southern Colorado. My parents were back-to-the-landers, hippies, and I grew up in the off-grid geodesic dome they built. Around 4, I have a memory of standing downstairs in the dome. I don’t know how I got down from my bedroom in the loft. A being was standing in front of me, an insectoid, with an exoskeleton. I called him Antman. I felt he was there to check on me. I didn’t tell anyone. I was so young, I didn’t realize it was unusual, but never forgot it.
Throughout my childhood I had vivid dreams and frequent out-of-body experiences. I had Armageddon dreams, dreams of war, explosions, the earth being destroyed and renewed, civilization coming back. I found the world very confusing and difficult to be in. I went to college, but dropped out. I had several years of drinking, drama, running from myself.
In my early 30s, I got sober and the anomalous experiences started again — sleep paralysis, waking with the bed shaking violently, and ultimately a life-changing out-of-body experience where I was surrounded by an overwhelming buzzing vibration and suspended in an intelligent, velvety darkness.
A being appeared and drew me towards a gateway. I knew that on the other side was where we go when we die. I became terrified and yanked myself back into my body. I had a vivid dream of four beings, joined together and surrounded by light, saying that they were there for me when I was ready. I called them the Four-Who-Are-One.
I started having dreams of colored orbs coming down from the sky. They began to teach me things, to tell me I needed to get ready for something, to help the planet. I gave away most of my possessions and moved into a yurt in southern Colorado to try to make my life as simple and connected to nature as possible. I continued to have out-of-body experiences and visitors, profound dreams and often saw U.F.O.s in the sky. It was really blissful.
After some time, I moved into an adobe house that was haunted. I started drinking heavily. I was depressed and had constant nightmares. I was on a path of self-destruction and in the depth of the darkness, I broke my ankle. As I fell, I saw the four light beings and they showered me with love, cradled my fall. Breaking my ankle that way stopped me in my tracks, and I was able to get sober again. I’ve now been sober for nearly five years.
After that, the anomalous experiences mostly stopped until the fall of 2019, right before Covid, when I broke the same ankle again, hiking. The sleep paralysis started up again, with messages that I needed to prepare for something, that I needed to help the planet. During hypnotic regression I was drawn into the cosmos and arrived on a different planet, standing before the Four-Who-Are-One.
I was afraid, until one of them pushed his face through the light and I recognized him as Antman. He told me that they are my guides, that I typically don’t incarnate on earth, but that I chose to come to work on a project. The project has to do with the earth shifting into a new paradigm, from evolution through suffering into creation and joy, to help end the cycle of self-destruction.
They told me I was in between two major blocks of my life and I needed to write a book to bridge the gap between them, that I would not be able to speak of these things until I wrote it. The experience deeply shook my reality, but after much resistance the book is nearly done.
My most recent experience was in January. I was meditating and felt the familiar pull of levitation. I was pulled high up into space, communicating with the Four. I found myself back in bed, my body heavy and strange. The light wouldn’t click on. I was in a honeycomb matrix that stretched out in every direction. The four beings emerged from where my bedroom wall should have been, and told me this matrix is what reality, this earth plane, hangs on.
They told me they were showing me a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the mechanics of reality. They said that it’s malleable and shifts in response to what I focus on, and I need to learn how to work with it.
Nadine Lalich, 69, retired paralegal in Albuquerque, and author of “Alien Experiences” and “Evolution.” I grew up in Michigan, south of Detroit. My grandparents were born in Croatia. My father was obsessed with astronomy. He told stories about flying, had disappearances. He said “they” would come back and take him off planet. My aunt Pat said men in black appeared to her at her door. I’ve seen several different species working together, small grays, tall whites, mantis beings, men in black. One was short statured with pointed ears, an elf figure.
At about 10, I walked into the living room and my parents and brother were slumped in front of the TV, unconscious. I could see the test pattern. There was somebody outside that came into the kitchen with me. We wouldn’t talk about this stuff. We weren’t that type of family. At 16, my boyfriend I drove to Metropark for an afternoon picnic. At dusk we saw this craft over our head. It jolted us. We followed it and lost time. We pulled over and fell asleep. He was never quite the same afterward. Later we married and divorced.
In 1991, on a camping trip to Sedona with my friend Pam, I woke up at 3 a.m. with rustling sounds outside the van. The door opened and I was blinded by the light. A long thin arm with three fingers and a thumb reached in. The next thing I knew I was standing at the back of the van paralyzed, with two small bald children on each side.
I felt myself levitate. I was going toward the light. An hour later I was dropped through the roof of the van. Boom! All my belongings were gone from the picnic table. I told Pam something terrible happened to me, I’ve got to go home.
For a few years I was in and out of denial. Thank goodness I began to record it in journals. I do believe some are physical entities who desire to eradicate hatred and violence within the human species. They may have eliminated it within themselves, or perhaps evolved without such intense emotion. They can show you your mind as a hologram projected into the air.
They showed me a picture of crafts coming, something that looks like a capsule burrowing down into the ground. And they showed me an area that looked like it was outside Las Vegas in the desert. You watched as it whirled in, scissor arms burrowing into the earth and telepathically suggested they had the capability to affect the neuro-processes of a whole city if they wanted to.
I no longer feel threatened. I’m not someone who believes they will take over our planet. They just don’t want us to expand our nuclear material. I do think some species are going to come into the open.
I have an innate trust in the infinite source that underlies all manifestation. It is an intelligent, powerful, and creative force that seeks to expand into the universe. Once you get through the fear, you realize, wait a minute! I’m still here. If they were going to take my life it would have happened by now. I have faith in the power that creates. Sometimes I call it “God” or the “Force.”

The Moon: “An artificial satellite left by ancient civilizations”
The Moon: “An artificial satellite left by ancient civilizations”
Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Sherbakov, two experienced Russian scientists from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, developed a theory where they claimed that the Moon is not a natural satellite. In fact, no ancient civilization mentions it.
Scientists are convinced that the Moon is hollow and is covered by an armored and a shock-absorbing shell.
In the 1960s, the magazine Sputnik published an article in which two scientists claimed that the Moon is not a natural satellite of the Earth, but a colossal hollow planetoid.
Its creation was thanks to an advanced civilization that strategically placed it in Earth orbit many centuries ago.
A theory could be considered somewhat far-fetched a priori, however, it would explain many of the enigmas of “our” satellite.
The Moon An artificial satellite?
The article explained that for the Moon to support its warp without breaking, it must be maintained by certain unusual internal characteristics . One of them is a huge inner fortress .
Experts said that artificial satellites are normally hollow and with colossal resistance to withstand the variations of outer space.
“The base probably had a double layer, a dense armored shell about 30 km thick, and over it a less compact cover, a thinner layer, about 4.5 km.”
Most of the debris that enters the atmosphere is destroyed , but this is not the case with the Moon. This would explain the immense amount of craters that exist on its surface compared to Earth.
If you take into consideration that the Moon traveled from a distant point in the cosmos , then it received many more impacts than the Earth.
Another issue is the depth of the impacts; they are all superficial. The explanation for this phenomenon is that objects collide with a buffer layer before encountering an impenetrable protective shell .
That would be the 30-kilometer-thick armored layer , so the explosion from the impact would only damage the 4.5-kilometer crust . The common depth of craters found on the Moon.
Another inexplicable event is the traces of seas of lava that have been found on the Moon. Some scientists claim that the lava could have come from inside the satellite. Something unlikely, since it has always been considered a cold body , incapable of generating that heat.
Craters on the Moon demonstrate a possible rather long journey to your current position.
Another theory speaks of meteorites that exploded on its surface, producing lava. The problem is that it seems to emanate from within . For Vasin and Sherbakov, these seas did come from the interior of the Moon, but not as we believe.
Legacy of an ancient civilization?
The experts assured that, from the inside, someone or something produced said material composed of rocks and materials, which took the appearance of lava.
This paste was used as cement to repair the damage caused by meteorites, thus creating “cleaner” and darker areas than others.
This could explain the gravitational variations in some sectors of the Moon. The composition and weight of these “seas” would provoke them.
We should know that the theory that the Moon is an artificial satellite is nothing new. In fact, since ancient times, there are no records of the Moon.
Philosophers like Aristotle speak in the Constitution of Tages, that the Pelasgian people inhabited the Earth “before the Moon appeared in the heavens .”
Ancient Tibetan texts also say that in the disappeared continent of Gondwana , where ancient Lemuria was, the Moon did not exist .
Inmanuel Velikovsky , a Russian researcher, stated in the 1950s that there are no clear records of the Moon in many ancient cultures.
Can we thus say that there is sufficient evidence to at least make us doubt that the Moon is a natural satellite? If this is true, it is time to question everything related to the lunar exploration of the different countries. What have they really discovered in that place?
The Voyager II unmanned spacecraft had been launched in August of 1977. Now, four years later, it was due to make its closest approach to Saturn on August 25, 1981. It was even going to send back photos in almost real time.
His idea was to interview Sagan (remember the insignificant Pale Blue Dot that Earth is supposed to be?).
I got to host Saturn and Beyond, and it was going to be Carl Sagan and me “live,” without commercial interruption, for thirty minutes on a show that got picked up by PBS for broadcast across the United States. It was heady stuff. After all, he was designing the messages for extraterrestrial civilizations that would ride with that Voyager spacecraft on the “Golden Record” at the same time I was a hippie radio news jock in Eugene, Oregon during college. Now I was going to sit on the same stage with him and talk a little space travel.
Sagan was already famous for the 1980 TV miniseriesCosmos:
He was also very much a believer in extraterrestrials and UFOs and even believed that dolphins might have a role to play in the matter. Newsman Zabel was not then “a UFO guy.” At any rate, Zabel walked Sagan out into the parking lot…
This is what I asked him:
“You’re famous for saying that there are billions and billions of stars out there in the Universe. You’ve actually said that you believe the Universe is teeming with life, and that some of it must be intelligent, probably more advanced than we are. But you also insist that none of these other beings could actually be here on Earth because the distances are too vast.”
Sagan’s smile left his face during this. He said, “What’s your point?”
“Well, only that you want us to look for radio signals coming from other civilizations out in space, but you say in Cosmos that UFOs aren’t really worth investigating, because they can’t be here in the first place. You’re a scientist. Why wouldn’t you want to investigate, particularly since it could prove we’re not alone?”
“I also said that extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof,” said Sagan. “The claims I’ve seen don’t come with much proof at all.”
Sagan left abruptly. Reflecting on the evidence, four decades later (and twenty-five years after Sagan’s death), Zabel thinks that Sagan had to downplay his passionate belief in extraterrestrials in order to avoid being written off as a crank — a cool crank but a crank nonetheless: “The truth of the matter, to me, is that he felt giving any quarter on the UFO issue could kill his career.”
Zabel has much more to tell in his story at Medium, including how he developed an interest in UFOs himself and went on to work in the sci-fi area.
Significantly, the discussion has become much less toxic over the years. The Pentagon report earlier this year clarified that UAPs (UFOs) are “not caused by any U.S. advanced technology.” There does not appear to be a straightforward weather-related explanation either for some of them. In short, it’s not a situation in which everyone on one side of the debate is a sharp cookie and everyone on the other side is a fool. In some cases, we just don’t know what’s happening.
Sagan was denied tenure at Harvard for being, according to Zabel, a little too “out there.” But today, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb openly discusses his thoughts on ETs and UFOs in popular science venues. And, in what sounds like a helpful move, NASA is seeking standards for ET life claims, rather than just denying or avoiding them altogether.
Perhaps all unidentified aerial phenomena are due to rare natural events. But the only way to honestly evaluate that is to start with the premise that they might — in principle — not be natural events. The need to simply “debunk” is not so much part of science as it is a social phenomenon: the Ingroup vs. the Outgroup. Continually proving that one is a member of the Correct group is hardly the spirit that advances science.
Here’s some retro from Voyager 1 and 2:
You may also wish to read:
The surprising role that dolphins have played in the search for ET. Dolphins, with their apparent alien intelligence, have been seen by scientists interested in ET as a stand-in. The discovery of dolphin intelligence supported the view that intelligence might evolve in unexpected places among life forms without hands.
and
The UAPs (UFOs) are “not caused by any U.S. advanced technology.” And that’s all the Pentagon probably really knows. Some, including physicist Mark Buchanan, hope we never find out if it’s aliens or not.

Today I went through the lunar orbiter mission photos and soon found an alien structure sticking out in the side of a crater. The structure is a monolith type shape. The object in question is an alien made structure laying on its side. The structure is about 5km long and 2.5km wide. The structure looks intact and should still be habitable if humans landed in that location and took it over. Its a self contained structure, a habitat that probably already can create an oxygen atmosphere within it, but if not, could easily be converted to do so. Its a lot easier than other suggestions scientists have given of making a dome over a crater...which could have leaks and you basically have to start from nothing. Here...its all ready and waiting for someone to take it over. But alien life is less of a mystery than humanity itself. Its hard to understand why most scientists would ignore such a great opportunity to instead start from nothing on the moon. Thats...how humans are...we chose to argue about subjects rather than take action. It holds humanity back. Its a waste of valuable time. The structure is there...and I predict humanity will ignore its discovery.

These unknown objects flying through our sky
These unknown objects flying through our sky
High speed disc-shaped UFO travelling over Mount Teide in Tenerife. Since the UFO/fastwalker passes the photographer at a reasonable distance, it is unlikely that the object is a bird flying close to the camera.
Then, four cigar shaped independent objects flying in parallel over Bend, Oregon. Objects were not visible to the naked eye and a weird transparent shaped object hovering through the sky over Brooklyn, New York. It appeared to be a physical object that reflected the light of the sun only at certain angles when turning.

Weird transparent UFO spirals down over Brooklyn 24-Sep-2021
This daytime UFO sighting was filmed in the sky above Brooklyn on 24th September 2021.
Witness report:
Me and my wife where at the rooftop enjoying the afternoon weather when a bright flash in the sky caught my eye. I looked up but couldn’t see anything. I mentioned to my wife, and as we looked up we both witnessed the flash again and what appeared to be a shape. The building is in Brooklyn and the object was spotted south of La Guardia Airport. First I thought of a flock of birds but where too high, and move too fast and coordinated. At times looked like a cloth or a transparent flag, but the flight path seemed oddly smooth and unpredictable. Because of looking almost transparent it’s hard to say, but seemed to spiral down in a controlled way. It appeared to be a physical object that reflected the light of the sun only at certain angles when turning. Other than those moments where the sun reflection flashed, it was very hard to see it at all. My wife started filming it and I ran to get the binoculars, when I got back the object was gone. My wife filmed it around 25 seconds after I first saw it so it’s all there in the video. It felt it was high and large, but is very hard to say exactly what we saw, even watching the video is hard to make our minds on what could have been. It could be some natural phenomena, but a strange one at least.
According to an Inverse report, a team of astronomers led by Leiden University researcher Hongying Chen is actively searching the skies for advanced alien life forms.
They’re looking for infrared signals that could be the exhaust emissions of hypothetical Dyson spheres, which are massive megastructures that harness the energy of the surrounding universe. Their new paper focuses on two distant galaxies whose infrared emissions have previously eluded simple explanation.
In search of super-intelligent alien life
Is there any life out there? According to the Fermi Paradox, it is extremely likely, given that there are billions of stars in the Milky Way alone, many of which have planets orbiting in habitable zones. Despite this, we have found no evidence of intelligent alien life. New discoveries, such as the recent discovery that Mars has always been too small to retain surface water, are constantly changing our understanding of the likelihood of discovering intelligent life in the far reaches of space.
Chen and his colleagues believe that if there is life out there, the most likely way to find it is to look for the traces of the most advanced civilizations. They are specifically looking for Kardashev Type III civilization (K3) lifeforms. The Kardashev scale was proposed in 1964 by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev as a way to measure the level of technological advancement of a hypothetical civilization based on the amount of energy it can harness from the surrounding universe.
As the most advanced type of alien civilization, K3 lifeforms are at the top of the scale. According to the scale, they would be able to harness the energy of black holes, stars, and quasars using technologies similar to the hypothetical Dyson sphere — a massive structure that could surround a celestial object such as a star without collapsing. It’s worth noting that humans aren’t even considered Type 1 yet, as that would necessitate us efficiently harnessing the power of the Sun. Chen and his colleagues scanned a portion of the Northern Sky for galaxies that could be home to K3 alien lifeforms. So far, two galaxies have stood out among the 21 they have studied. They describe their findings in a paper published in the Royal Astronomical Society’s Monthly Notices.
The researchers behind the new study believe they can detect a Type III civilization by looking for mid-infrared emissions in the sky. These, they believe, could be telltale signs of advanced alien races emitting Dyson Spheres — Chen’s team writes in their paper that K3 civilizations are likely to “generate strong excess emission in the mid-infrared (MIR) that is associated with the waste heat they generate.” The researchers examined the emissions of 21 galaxies with high mid-infrared emissions and discovered that four of them had mid-infrared emissions that were multiplied by a factor of ten. One of these was an active galactic nucleus, and the other was a star-forming galaxy, indicating that they are natural sources of mid-infrared emissions. The other two galaxies, known as ILT J134649.72+542621.7 and ILT J145757.90+565323.8, however, are not so easily explained, and the researchers say they “require further investigation.”
The researchers’ next goal is to pinpoint the precise source of the infrared emissions. “We can look at their emissions in other wavelengths like X-ray and optical to see if their spectral energy distribution is active galactic nuclei-like or star-forming-galaxy-like,” Chen explained in an interview with Inverse. “We can also conduct high-resolution radiological observations on them to examine their morphology.” They also intend to scan other parts of the sky for possible signs of hyper-advanced alien life.

A UFO “overtakes” fighter jets during an air show
A UFO “overtakes” fighter jets during an air show
This is the second time in three weeks that a high-speed UFO has “overtaken” fighter jets during an air show.
On August 28, 2021, during an international air show in Thamesford, Ontario, Canada, a swift UFO flew past the Blue Angels and now, on September 19, 2021, a similar incident occurred when the Red Arrows performed a show. air over Chorley, England.
As with the UFO in Canada, this UFO in England also has neither wings nor visible propulsion. What’s going on? Why do these objects appear during air shows?
During the last years we have published hundreds of similar cases, which for many researchers, these UFOs are supposed extraterrestrial ships of some civilization that is among us.
As reported by the well-known ufological portal MUFON , on September 19, 2021, an incredibly fast UFO flew past military aircraft during an air show.
Ufologists wonder why these UFOs appear during air shows?
Some researchers believe that UFOs are deliberately identified to make themselves known, and others believe that objects in this way demonstrate their advantage over human technologies. What do you think?
You may know him as The Red Rocker, or the lead singer of Montrose, or David Lee Roth’s replacement in Van Halen, or from the video for “I Can’t Drive 55”, or from drinking his Cabo Wabo tequila. Do aliens know him for any of those reasons or was it something else that prompted them to abduct him in the mid 1960s – at least that’s what he told an interviewer in Las Vegas this week before a rooftop concert. Did ET want a song about no being able to drive Warp 55?
“100% happened. Four o’clock in the morning, pitch black, dead sleep. I felt like I was being programmed like someone’s tapping into me like it was a string from my head to 13 miles up on a mountain place called Lau Creek. And I know right where it was, these little foothills. There was an object there. There was two people in it, two creatures in it. And it was 19, I want to say it was 64, 65.”
Hagar has told the story before, including in his autobiography, but JC Fernandez, a host of Las Vegas Now on KLAS-TV, seems to have elicited more details about the encounter (reprinted by Mystery Wire) , which Hagar admits happened while he was asleep. He believes the ETs communicated with him telepathically.
“And they went, “Oh, he’s waking up,” augmented telepathy, you know, they just did the communication when my head is waking up. They yelled out a numerical code, not of our numerical system, (speaks the alien sounds he heard). And it went, and I can almost feel the plug, like an electrical charge leaving, zapped into their ship, put a light on in this ship where I see shadows of these creatures.”
In previous interviews, Hagar explains how he woke up to a loud ‘BAM’ and a white light and became convinced this abduction happened for a reason – he was programmed by aliens to become a rock star. Now, even The Red Rocker knows that’s pretty far out and he doesn’t mention it in the latest interview. However, this time he reveals that this was not his only encounter with aliens.
“These little gray creatures that were hanging out in Lake Placid. I had a house out in the wilderness and I had just no electricity, log cabin back in the early 80s, 81 82 and these little guys are in that cabin one night and you know even slamming doors just I’m not saying Yeah, they were physical guys. I don’t know if they were robots or what but it was freaky. It scared me to death.”
Hagar says the first encounter convinced him there are many kinds of aliens in different dimensions and they merely nabbed him as a kind of lab rat. He doesn’t think the aliens enlightened him (wonder what it did to them!!) nor did he get any implants or programming. He likened it to taking LSD where the enlightenment came from his realization of the experience. However, it did inspire him to put at least one space or alien-related song on many of his solo albums.
“Yeah, Space Station Number Five first Montrose song. Second Montrose was out in 1975 was Space Age Sacrifice. My first solo album, Hot Rocks, which changed into another song. But Silver Lights is about the return of the aliens coming back to see check out their planet that they populated somehow you know propagated with you know planted seeds. The next album Red had Someone Out There. Next Turn Up the Music had A Crack in the World on that record as far as I can remember. Then I stopped doing it every album. But every now and then I got one on there.”
How about This Planet’s on Fire on Street Machine? And don’t forget the album and song Marching to Mars. And anyone who pens a song titled Cosmic Universal Fashion must have had some kind of otherworldly inspiration, right?
Forget Tom DeLonge. It sounds like Sammy Hagar is the right rock ambassador to greet ETs visiting Earth. Maybe, if he’s lucky, they’ll take him for a ride faster than 55.
Just a few days ago, I was chatting on radio about the notorious “Philadelphia Experiment” of 1943. Or, rather, the alleged experiment. There’s no doubt at all that when it comes to the issues of control and conspiracy, just about the biggest doozy of all is that which revolves around what is known as the Montauk Project. It’s a complicated saga which is filled with tales of mind-control, time-travel, government cover-ups, secret experiments, and much more. And it’s all focused around a certain facility located on Long Island, New York. It’s a story that has its origins in the 1940s and an incredible series of classified programs run by the U.S. Navy, but which didn’t start to surface publicly until the 1950s. It was in 1955 that a highly controversial book on flying saucers was published. The author was Morris Ketchum Jessup, and the title of his book was The Case for the UFO. It was a book which, for the most part, highlighted two particular issues: (a) how gravity could be harnessed and used as an energy; and (b) the source of power of the mysterious flying saucers that people were seeing in the skies above. It wasn’t long after the book was published that Jessup was contacted by a man who wrote Jessup a number of letters that detailed something astounding. The man was one Carlos Allende, a resident of Pennsylvania.
Allende’s letters were as long as they were rambling and almost ranting, but Jessup found them oddly addictive. Allende provided Jessup what he – Allende – claimed were top secret snippets of a story that revolved another nothing less than invisibility – of the type achieved, in fictional formats, at least, in the likes of The Invisible Man movie of 1933, starring Claude Rains. It wasn’t just invisibility that Allende had on his mind: it was teleportation, too, and of the kind which went drastically wrong for Jeff Goldblum’s character, Seth Brundle, in 1986’s The Fly. Jessup read the letters with varying degrees of amazement, worry, fear and incredulity. That’s hardly surprising, given the nature of the alleged events. So Allende’s tale went, it was at the Philadelphia Naval Yard, in October 1943, when the U.S. Navy reportedly managed to bring both teleportation and invisibility into the real world.
(U.S. Navy) USS Eldridge
According to Allende, the ship in question – the DE 173 USS Eldridge – vanished from Philadelphia and then very briefly reappeared at Norfolk, Virginia, after which it returned to the Philadelphia Naval Yard. How did Allende know all this? He told Jessup that he was on-board a ship whose crew were monitoring the experiment, the USS Andrew Furuseth. In one of his letters, that detailed his own, claimed sighting of the Eldridge vanishing form view, Allende wrote that he watched “the air all around the ship turn slightly, ever so slightly, darker than all the other air. I saw, after a few minutes, a foggy green mist arise like a cloud. I watched as thereafter the DE 173 became rapidly invisible to human eyes.” Allende’s story was, to be sure, incredible. But, the important thing was: was it true? It sounded like an amazing hoax. But, there was just something about the story which made Jessup suspect this was not a joke at all. The more that Allende related the growing aspects of the tale, the more and more Jessup was reeled in.
(Nick Redfern) Morris Jessup’s books
Allende told Jessup that while the experiment worked – in terms of achieving both teleportation and invisibility – it had terrible, adverse effects upon the crew. Many of them had gone completely and utterly insane and lived out the rest of their lives in asylums for the insane. Some vanished from view and were never seen nor heard from again. Others were fused into the deck of the ship, flesh and metal combined into one. Agonizing deaths were all those poor men had. There is, however, something else that needs to be made clear. Despite the intricacy surrounding the supposed experiment, nothing ever surfaced about the USS Eldridge, and about people turning briefly invisible or vanishing forever , before Allende was on the scene. Yes, retired military people have came forward – post-Allende and post-Jessup – to share what they knew. I only wish, though, we had a fistful of such sources back in, let’s say, only three months or eight months after the alleged experiment supposedly took place. Unfortunately, we don’t. It all surfaces in the 1950s.
These jars were discovered during excavations where a temple and graves were found in an ancient town near Columbia’s capital of Bogotá. The jars, which are called ofrendatarios, were created by the ancient Muisca people (they are also known as Chibcha) who were well known for their exceptional metal-crafting skills. In fact, their famous works have been linked to the mythical lost gold city of El Dorado.
Eight ceramic jars contained metal figurines with emeralds.
The jars and figurines date back approximately 600 years. The figurines were in a variety of shapes, such as snakes, other different animals, and even people wearing headdresses with weapons and staffs. There may have been a connection between the items and the temple in which they were found as explained by archaeologist Francisco Correa, “It’s very difficult to establish, I think there was some type of cult of the ancestors.” They could have been used as an offering and they could have possibly been made in reference to deities that were worshipped by the Muisca people.
They had to make trades with other groups in order to obtain gold because there weren’t any gold mines near them. Their goldwork was so magnificent that they were referenced to the golden city of El Dorado. The Muisca people had a tradition where the chief would be covered in an ointment that contained gold particles during specific ceremonies which were apparently some of the “…motivations of this [El Dorado] myth” as noted by Correa. Actually, the Spanish watched these ceremonies take place and they even recorded them in ancient chronicles (as well as mentioning their goldwork) which helped to influence the myth.
Emeralds
The Spanish took over the region between the years 1537 and 1540 which caused many of the Muisca people to die during the battle or from diseases. While many lives were lost, the Muisca people did continue to inhabit the area and there are still people today who are descendants of them.
Pictures of the jars, figurines, and emeralds can be seen here.

Various artifacts were also found during the excavation of the site.
Emeralds were found inside the ofrendatarios.

The myth of El Dorado comes from this object and the legend behind it. The zipa or Muisca king used to cover his body in gold dust. And from his raft, he offered treasures to the Guatavita goddess in the middle of the sacred lake. This old Muisca tradition became the origin of the legend of El Dorado. This Muisca raft figure is on display in the Gold Museum, Bogotá, Colombia.
Spinning disc-shaped UFO over Austin, TX 6-Sep-2021
Spinning disc-shaped UFO over Austin, TX 6-Sep-2021
This daytime UFO sighting ob some kind of a bright spinning flying saucer was filmed over Austin, Texas on 6th September 2021.
Witness report:
Spinning disc like object viewed in the sky northeast from my location. The object moved up / down vertically and left/right continuously. As I stood up to gain a better vantage to see it, the object appeared to drop rapidly behind tree cover. As I sat back down in my pool, the object raised back up. I observed the object for 20+ minutes. The object was appeared white or transparent and was not close – I estimate it was at least 1/4 mile or more in the distance. The object did not appear to have any sound associated with it (humming of drone for example). It did appear to have spinning white lights as viewed in the images and video.

These strange lights were filmed over Indio in California on 23rd September 2021 at 8pm.
Witness report:
29 palms marine base is higher north east, this is south east looking towards Salton sea. Only possible base in that direction is Yuma, AZ. I don’t think they are flares, they are stationary and my friend said he seen them flying across Salton sea. This was taken during work tonight. There are 5 lights then 5 more appear above the original lights. This direction I’m looking at is south east heading towards Salton sea. Other people did see this in different directions. They look still and not moving, my other friend is in the northern area of Indio and said he seem these lights in a straight light moving fast over the Salton sea. I could not hear any sound and could only see in the distance. At the end they just disappear.
Recently, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson had an entertaining talk with PBS’s Firing Line’s Margaret Hoover about space-related stuff including the current hot topic of UFOs/UAPs. Below you can read the show’s full transcript. He said this among many other things: "Well, I hope it’s ours that is highly secret, because this kind of propulsion that has no wings and doesn’t have an exhaust and suddenly darts from here to there in an instant, covering a distance at speeds that are incredible, I hope it’s ours. But according to our government, they’re telling us it is NOT.”
NASA Administrator Bill Nelson discusses America’s mission to return to the moon and reach Mars, a new international space race, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP) sightings, and NASA’s search for intelligent life in the universe.
The final frontier, this week on ‘Firing Line.’ America has always had a frontier. Now that frontier is upward, and it’s out into the cosmos.
A child of the Florida space coast who became the second sitting member of Congress in orbit.
We have liftoff.
Now Bill Nelson’s been asked to lead NASA into the future. The agenda is ambitious and expensive — put an American back on the Moon by 2024, then on to Mars.
Mars is the goal in the decade of the 2030s.
There’s competition from China and Russia and the space race among billionaires to be the first.
Liftoff as the Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon… There’s also a brand-new government report about unexplained sightings in the sky.
Look at that thing, dude.
And it may have raised more questions than answers.
Look at it fly!
What does NASA Administrator Bill Nelson say now?
‘Firing Line with Margaret Hoover’ is made possible in part by… And by… Corporate funding is provided by… NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, welcome to ‘Firing Line.’
Thank you so much. I love to talk about space.
You have said that NASA is in your blood. You grew up on the Space Coast and became the second sitting member of Congress to travel into space aboard the Space Shuttle in 1986. But a decade ago, NASA seemed adrift in space. The space shuttle program was ending, and the U.S. had no means of reaching space. Compared to 10 years ago, Senator, where does NASA stand today?
Well, it was specifically 11 years ago that Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and I wrote the bill that put NASA on the course that it’s on, a dual course — one-course commercial companies that NASA would hire, specifically the delivery of crew and cargo to the International Space Station. And then the other course, NASA, to get out of low Earth orbit and go explore the heavens. And that’s the course that we’re on. Now, in that period of time, the space shuttle was coming to an end after the destruction of It was strongly encouraged to shut it down and come up with a design that was more safe for human life. And that’s what we have now. And you will see that in the largest rocket ever will launch at the end of this year. The space launch system with its spacecraft, Orion, on the top.
I’d like to ask you about the SLS space launch system, which is NASA’s enormous launch rocket, a project that you have supported going back to 2011 when you were in the United States Senate. Let me ask you, the office of inspector general says that that project is costing billions more than it was supposed to and is at least two years behind schedule. As NASA administrator, your job now is to keep the project on schedule and within budget. How are you going to do that?
And more recently, it’s just been delayed further because of a protest of the bid that NASA earlier this year had awarded to a competition of the lander, a commercial lander. So that’s another delay of 100 days and then on the basis of what the General Accounting Office decides. So you have these delays. But the fact is, once GAO decides, we’re ready to go, and we’re going to push full steam ahead.
The goal was to launch Artemis in 2021, and then. ultimately, land astronauts on the Moon by the end of 2024. So is that going to stay on schedule, or will that be delayed?
We’re going with crew in 2023, and then, depending on this competition for a lander in the commercial sector, then that’s going to determine when we actually land on the moon with humans. And that’s what we’ve got to keep on track and we’ve got to try to speed up.
You said you’re ready to go as soon as the GAO, the Government Accountability Office, says so, but in May, they said, quote, ‘The ambitious schedule decreases the likelihood of NASA achieving its goal.’ So what gives? Who’s right here?
Well, that report was actually written on materials and information that they had received earlier that have since been changed. However, space is hard, space is risky. And when you have human life in it, it’s important that you do it right. The entire space program all the way back from Project Mercury, look at all the delays there, after the Apollo 1 fire that we lost three astronauts. They had to redesign the spacecraft. You’ve seen these delays as a result because space is hard.
How confident are you there will be a woman on the Moon in 2024?
Well, don’t hold to that. I’ve said space is hard. That’s the goal. So whenever that is, it will be the first woman and the next man. And in the course of all the landings will also be the first person of color.
So there’s a chance it will be delayed from 2024.
We’ll see. That’s the goal.
Listen, in 1968, astronauts on the first manned mission to the Moon, the Apollo 8, sent back a photograph of the Earth, which gave us a new perspective on our planet, and it even helped propel the environmental movement towards the first Earth Day in 1970. One of your first interviews, you mentioned that climate change would be a top issue for you as the NASA administrator. How will NASA’s new Earth System Observatory help protect the planet?
It’s five missions over the next decade, yet once on orbit, it’s all going to talk to each other as they measure every detail about land, the seas, ice, and the atmosphere. And that is going to give us a three-dimensional picture of the Earth’s environment and what are the changes and what we project in the future. That is already, in the scientific community, is just being greeted with extraordinary excitement. Because if you want to mitigate climate, you’ve got to measure it. And that’s what NASA is going to do.
The Mars helicopter, Ingenuity, which cost a relatively inexpensive $85 million to build and operate, just went on its ninth flight. It was about 1/200th of what the SLS rocket, which hasn’t flown yet, has cost so far. Ingenuity has been so successful that NASA extended its mission for at least another 30 days. Should NASA focus even more on smaller missions like this that it’s so good at?
Well, Ingenuity is the result of a very large mission and a very successful one. We have been putting landers out on Mars since the 1970s. And so the one that is there now is the size of a Volkswagen, the rover. And so they got this idea of attaching this little helicopter to it just to see if a helicopter could fly in an atmosphere that is one percent of the density of Earth’s atmosphere. And lo and behold, it worked. And then they said, ‘Well, it’s working so well, let’s try to do some other things.’ And now, after nine times flying, what it is actually, it’s a scout for the rover. So we now have a scout on Mars.
It’s extraordinary to watch. You know, William F. Buckley Jr. spoke to astronaut Alan Shepard in 1973, two years after Shepard walked on the Moon, in a program that was entitled ‘Was It Worth It?’ Watch this.
I think we have the first amount of data back from the lunar surface that’s going to tell us a tremendous amount of the geology of the Moon, its relationship to the geology of the Earth, how the two are related, how we can better determine what’s going on on the Earth. These are the kinds of things that we have to assess in the next five or six years. Now, I can’t honestly say what’s going to be the answer five or six years from now — do we, in fact, want to go back to the Moon again? Perhaps the answer will be no. Perhaps we don’t want to go back for 100 years. If you say, ‘All right, in 1985, automatically, fund $3 billion annually for the second expedition to the Moon,’ I would say I couldn’t give you an honest answer. If you had to force me to make a decision now, I would say no, let’s wait five years.
And would that reasoning apply to Mars?
Oh, I think so, yeah.
Why is now the time to return to the Moon and to go to Mars?
Because in going back to the Moon, we’re going to learn how to go to Mars. Now, as a practical matter, we’re not going to be there until late in the decade in the 2030s, so as we get prepared to go to Mars, first of all, how long is it going to take you? It’s going to take you 8 to 10 months to get there. Once you get there, you’re going to have to stay a minimum of a year because the planets have to come back into realignment where it’s closest so that you can get back to Earth. So we’re going to learn habitats and protection and systems and new technology on the Moon that will enable us to go to Mars and to stay as long as a year in order to be able to get back to Earth.
A year ago, the Pentagon officially released three videos that were already circulating online. The videos were from 2004 and 2015, and they showed unidentified objects on radar, performing in uncharacteristic ways.
My gosh. They’re all going against the wind. The wind’s 120 knots west. Look at that thing, dude.
The director of National Intelligence has just declassified a nine-page report that is a preliminary assessment of UAPs, unexplained aerial phenomenon, what we all used to call UFOs. Of the 144 UAP reports between 2004 and 2021, only one was identified in high confidence. The other 143 are still mysterious. What did you think of the key findings of that report?
Well, I’ve read that report, and two years ago, in a classified setting in the Senate Armed Services Committee, I talked to the pilots, and they are absolutely convinced that they saw something. They locked their radar onto it, they followed it, and then, all of a sudden, it would move. And it had no exhaust. It had no plume. It had no visible wings or any kind of engines. So we don’t know what it is. But it’s something because, as you mentioned, over 140 sightings and maybe a couple of dozen that are really very specific sightings by very credible sources. And so, what is it? We don’t know. NASA has a program searching for life in the universe. It’s called Space Astrobiology. We’re looking for signs of life on Mars. We’re looking in the project that’s going to Venus now to see is there life in that atmosphere. We also listen in the universe. We have a grant program for people listening in the universe for any kind of intelligent signal. So we don’t know what this phenomenon is, but we sure need to find out.
According to the report, more, quote, ‘scientific knowledge’ may be needed to understand some of the objects. The report reads, quote… Senator, they’re saying that our science is not good enough to understand the phenomena that was observed. I know you say we don’t know what it is, but what do you think it is?
Well, I don’t know. I hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth, because then they have technology, if that’s the case, that we do not have. But the answer to your question is, I do not know.
Do you believe there’s life in another part of the universe?
I sure do. And let me tell you why. The universe is 13.5 billion years old. We’re even finding now other suns that very likely have planets, that we call exoplanets, circulating around, and we’re looking for signs of one with a habitable atmosphere that would duplicate what we have in our solar system with planet Earth. And so do I think in a universe that is so big that there is another sun in another galaxy, that that sun has planets revolving around it? You bet I believe that. And very likely, if there is, the chemical composition, as all those gases amassed around and formed the planets, the chemical composition could produce life. And that’s what we’re exploring.
Does NASA have a plan, Senator, for what it would do should a UAP turn out to be a space alien?
No, but the first thing we’d want to do is to find out if it’s friend or foe. But, you know, we’re not to that point because we just don’t know what this phenomenon is. I think with all those sightings that you referenced, there’s something there. This is not an optical illusion or a radar blip that’s a mistake. When you talk to those Navy pilots, they’re convinced because they saw it, and they tracked it.
Senator, of course, one of the possibilities is that this is a foreign adversary’s advanced technology or perhaps our own advanced technology that is highly classified. What is the probability that that’s what this is?
Well, I hope it’s ours that is highly secret, because this kind of propulsion that has no wings and doesn’t have an exhaust and suddenly darts from here to there in an instant, covering a distance at speeds that are incredible, I hope it’s ours. But according to our government, they’re telling us it is not.
Well, then you can understand the curiosity that we’re out looking for other life, we believe it’s there, we have unidentified objects flying in our own airspace, but we don’t have a plan for aliens?
Well, I had a wonderful plan when I watched Steven Spielberg’s ‘E.T.,’ and he was a friendly little fella. But we just don’t know. We don’t know what this phenomenon is.
All right. Richard Branson is scheduled to join Virgin Galactic, a space test next week. Jeff Bezos plans to be on board his own Blue Origin spacecraft during the first manned mission later this month. And I know you think that this is a great thing. How does NASA think about itself in the context of private-sector investment in space exploration and its own role?
More power to these space billionaires. Now, they’re not going into orbit. They’re just going on an 11- or 15-minute ride to the edge of space, have about three minutes of zero G, and then come back. You will start to have private astronauts early next year start going into orbit around the Earth. And we will have private astronauts that will come under the tutelage of a professional former astronaut that will visit the space station. So there’s a whole new explosion of new kind of uses of space in the private sector.
SpaceX rockets built by Elon Musk have already been used to power NASA missions. And SpaceX is designing a lunar lander that is intended to take humans back to the Moon. You know, there are some who argue that NASA should stay out of the business of building rockets and that this should be left to the private sector. There is a view that NASA’s role in space exploration should be to set the vision for the country and then partner with the private sector who can do a better job of controlling costs and meeting deadlines. What’s your response to that?
Well, that was the whole theory of the space bill, the NASA bill of 2010, was to have the best of both worlds. Now, always, NASA has depended on the commercial sector. All of our previous flights to the Moon, for example, were all done with private companies, with NASA overseeing them. In effect, you’re having a version of that right now as we’re going back to the Moon with the first woman and the first person of color.
Let me ask you — because China and Russia have announced that they have plans to launch a spacecraft as soon as October to look for ice on the Moon, and they say that they are going to also build a permanent research base at the South Pole of the Moon by 2030, it begs the question of are we entering an age of a new space race, Senator?
Personally, I think we are, because I think the Chinese have a very aggressive space program. Just within the last six months, they’ve landed on Mars. They’re only the second nation to have landed on Mars. Now, we’ve been on the surface of Mars since the 1970s, but they’re the second. Look what they’ve done just a few weeks ago. They now launched a space station, and now they have it occupied with their taikonauts. And this announcement that they’re partnering with Russia, that should give us pause, as well, because Russia has been our partner when they were the Soviet Union in 1975 when we had Apollo-Soyuz. And they have built the International Space Station with us. And my opinion is that they will continue to be our partner on the International Space Station. But we’ve got to watch a new space race with the Chinese government.
Is a space race good for innovation and exploration?
Competition is always good.
The critics would say even with Russia and China teaming up, they really don’t present enough of an existential threat for us to focus as uniquely and singularly as we did on the space race in the ’60s and ’70s.
Well, it depends on how you want to measure that. Do you want, for example, for China, to have them land all of these missions that they’re planning on the South Pole, which is the place where there should be a lot of ice, and, therefore, you have fuel and you have oxygen? They say it’s an international scientific mission. Well, what happens if they suddenly get there, and we’re not there, and they say, ‘No, it’s an exclusive economic zone. You can’t come in’? So you always want to be prepared? I don’t think the United States wants to be second on anything. And I think that’s why you’re seeing the vigorous support of the Biden administration with our space program.
One ‘gee whiz’ moment on the horizon is the launch of the new space telescope that is being advertised as being able to look much closer at the beginning of time. This is the James Webb Telescope. What does NASA hope it might find, Senator?
It’s going to look back in time to the beginning of the development of the universe. As a result, we’re going to find out more about the development. In finding out about that, we’re going to find out how did all of these solar systems occur in all of these millions and millions of galaxies. And so we’re going to be able to determine what happened that we are so fortunate on planet Earth that we had a habitable atmosphere that will sustain life. And by the way, the more and more that we find out about that, we can be better stewards of our own planet and protect the life we have here on this planet.
One final question. Given what we know about the UAPs, when is the right time, Senator, for us to come up with a plan to handle intelligent life that we’re looking for?
Well, we better identify it first. And once we identify it, then we’ll know what to do. We don’t have any idea if suddenly an alien is going to appear. This is still great speculation. But we’re in the search for life out there, and this phenomenon that these Navy pilots have seen, let’s find out about it. What is it? And then we can deal with it.
For all the contingency plans that the U.S. government has on every shelf, in every binder, I would think that we would be more prepared for that possible eventuality than you say that we are.
It is what it is.
Senator Nelson, thank you very much for joining me on ‘Firing Line’ to talk about space and NASA under your leadership.
It’s my pleasure. Thank you.

Canada’s ‘Point Man’ for Military UFO Reports Is This Civilian in Winnipeg
Canada’s ‘Point Man’ for Military UFO Reports Is This Civilian in Winnipeg
According to UFO procedures obtained by VICE World News, Canada’s military refers reports of UFO sightings to a private company... and a civilian UFO researcher in Manitoba.

Canada’s government and military have forwarded UFO reports to a civilian researcher for over two decades, VICE World News has learned.
Chris Rutkowski, one of the country’s most prominent ufologists, has been covering Canadian cases for more than 30 years, but has never fully disclosed these ties.
This is also the first time current UFO procedures have been released from the Canadian air force and NORAD, the joint Canada-U.S. defence group. They show an apparent lack of official Canadian curiosity or concern with phenomena the U.S. military openly investigates as potential national security threats.
“Their official stance is that they are not doing anything about UFOs and that I am the point man in Canada,” Rutkowski told VICE World News.
Obtained through Canada’s Access to Information Act, procedural checklist CL 213 outlines how the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canada’s NORAD headquarters deal with UFO sightings.
CL 213 says: “CIRVIS (Communications Instructions for Reporting Vital Intelligence Sightings) reports should be made immediately upon a vital intelligence sighting of… objects or activities which appear to be hostile, unidentified, or engaged in possible illegal smuggling activity.” It even puts “unidentified flying objects” at the top of a list of examples such as “submarines or warships which are not Canadian or American.”
“Nav Canada manages Canadian airspace, and for that reason, it is important for them to be advised,” a Canadian air force and NORAD spokesperson told VICE World News.
CL 213 specifically comes from 1 Canadian Air Division in Winnipeg, the air force’s command centre and headquarters of the Canadian NORAD Region. While NORAD is not subject to freedom of information laws, as part of the Canadian Armed Forces, 1 Canadian Air Division is.
Canada’s military says it does not typically concern itself with UFO reports, unless they represent emergencies or “credible threats.” A defence spokesperson did disclose that “CIRVIS reports are shared with our NORAD colleagues in the U.S.”
And according to CL 213, “UFO sightings are to be referred to: Mr. Chris Rutkowski.”
‘Handshake agreement’
Often billed as the country’s foremost “UFO expert,” Rutkowski is the author of 10 books on the subject and founder of the annual Canadian UFO Survey, which has documented more than 22,000 UFO sightings since 1989. While the science writer has mentioned receiving reports from the military in his survey and speaking engagements, he’s never gone into depth about the exclusive two-decade arrangement—until now.
“I tend not to talk about my UFO research publicly but I do talk about UFOs publicly,” Rutkowski told us. “It’s a subtle distinction.”
“I don’t recall the name of the person who initially phoned me more than 20 years ago,” he said. “All that was discussed on the brief phone call was a verification that I was the person that had wanted to receive UFO reports.”
A spokesperson from Canada’s Department of National Defence described it as a “handshake agreement” with “a known responsible and published researcher on UFOs.” The spokesperson confirmed UFO reports have “been passed to (Rutkowski), on occasion, in various forms since the late 1990s.”
“I have no illusions that I receive all official UFO reports,” Rutkowski said. “I receive relatively low-classified reports with no security concerns.”
Rutkowski holds science and education degrees from the University of Manitoba, which has long employed him in communications roles, and where he is donating his UFO files. His latest book, Canada’s UFOs: Declassified, is scheduled to be released this fall.
“I didn’t start out to be ‘Canada’s UFO expert,’” Rutkowski said. “I just plugged away, trying to understand what was really going on.”
‘We do not send it to NORAD like we used to’
VICE World News first learned of CL 213 in a declassified daily log file from the Canadian air force and NORAD command centre in Winnipeg. It describes them being notified of a cargo flight that reported an “object… going between Mach 4 & 5 making constant circles” above Canada’s Northwest Territories in April 2018.
That information came from the Canadian Air Defence Sector (CADS) in North Bay, Ontario, which is alerted by Nav Canada air traffic controllers when pilots report UFOs. CADS then informs the air force and NORAD in Winnipeg, and it also faxes Transport Canada, the government’s transportation department.
Transport Canada said it began sending Rutkowski “brief emails and some reports” in December 1999, but recently stopped after it “determined that it was not an operational necessity.”
“The decision to provide Mr. Rutkowski with these reports was an informal process and was done as a courtesy to encourage Mr. Rutkowski in his research for his fiction novels,” a spokesperson said.
VICE World News also learned Rutkowski has received UFO reports directly from at least five Canadian military bases.
In the case of CFB Comox in British Columbia, procedures to send Rutkowski reports were in place for at least a decade, but were cancelled this year after the base “started to receive weekly… requests on the topic of UFOs,” according to the Canadian military’s access to information office.
The old procedural document said, “We do not send it to NORAD like we used to. There is no form to fill in; just take the info and email it.”
‘Information should be available to everyone’
VICE World News was told to file access to information requests to glimpse what Rutkowski’s received from Canada’s government and military, and, so far, has only been able to independently verify six reports from CFB Comox. Two appear to have been left out of Rutkowski’s annual UFO survey, as was the 2018 “Mach 4” incident.
“I don’t have a problem with Chris getting this information,” freedom of information researcher Sean Holman told VICE World News. “What I do have a problem with is Canadians not getting this information.”
Holman, who teaches journalism at Alberta’s Mount Royal University, said “these kinds of informal relationships used to exist fairly regularly” before Canada’s Access to Information Act came into effect in 1983. He suggested Canada create a “regularized system” to release UFO data, perhaps even formalizing Rutkowski’s gatekeeper role.
Such an approach would still be a far cry from the U.S., where the military has studied UFOs almost continuously since 2007, and where intelligence officials released a stunning report in June that stated these phenomena “clearly pose a safety of flight issue and may pose a challenge to U.S. national security.”
Canada doesn’t seem to be as alarmed.
“If the government feels comfortable releasing this information to a private citizen, then that means that information should logically be available to everyone,” Holman said. “There’s a real opportunity here for Chris.”
