Onderzoek naar leefbare planeten en de levensloop van sterren(stelsels): dit kunnen we de komende 20 jaar verwachten van de James Webb Space Telescope
Vier prachtige foto’s van sterrenstelsels, een analyse van de atmosfeer van een planeet ver weg van ons en donderdag als verrassing een testfoto van Jupiter. De James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) heeft al een goede eerste indruk nagelaten, maar deze week was eigenlijk slechts een voorproefje. Wat kunnen we nog verwachten van de ruimtetelescoop? Waarom kostte de ontwikkeling ervan tientallen miljarden euro’s en duurde dat meerdere decennia? En hoe lang zal de JWST nog operationeel blijven? We zochten het voor je uit.
De JWST heeft deze week getoond waar het goed in is: prachtige en vooral enorm gedetailleerde foto’s maken van plekken in het universum die miljarden lichtjaren van ons verwijderd zijn.
Dat kan dankzij de enorme, iconische spiegel bestaande uit de achttien zeshoekige segmenten, die allemaal apart af te stellen zijn. De totale breedte ervan is 6,5 meter, vergeleken met de spiegel van de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop die 2,4 meter breed is. Daardoor is de JWST tien tot honderd keer gevoeliger. Hieronder zie je een vergelijking tussen de Hubble en JWST.
De JWST is extreem koel
Die gevoeligheid maakt het mogelijk om meer licht op te vangen en vooral licht dat minder energie bevat. Dat maakt de JWST ideaal om sterren en andere objecten te observeren die enorm ver weg van ons liggen. Hoe verder die van ons verwijderd zijn, hoe zwakker het licht dat ze uitstralen of reflecteren.
Licht van die verre sterren ligt daarom op het infrarode deel van het elektromagnetische spectrum. Onzichtbaar voor het blote oog, maar detecteerbaar voor de JWST. Dat infrarode straling ook door warme objecten zoals de zon wordt uitgezonden, betekent dat de ruimtetelescoop afgekoeld moet worden tot min 370 Fahrenheit of min 223 graden Celsius.
Geen gemakkelijke klus
Dat de JWST operationeel is en foto’s kan doorsturen, is zowat een wetenschappelijk wonder. Het kostte vele jaren werk en er was een gigantisch budget voor nodig.
De spiegel van de telescoop is namelijk zodanig gigantisch dat die opgevouwen moest worden om op een raket te passen. Na de lancering op 25 december 2021 hadden ingenieurs weken lang werk om de spiegel te ontvouwen en juist af te stellen.
Dat was een kwestie van een foto nemen, de data ervan te verwerken om op basis daarvan de instellingen lichtjes aan te passen om de resultaten te verbeteren. Dat proces moest stap voor stap meerdere keren worden herhaald, getuigen NASA-werknemers bij ‘The Verge’.
Dat gebeurde bovendien vanop een afstand van zo’n anderhalf miljard kilometer van de aarde. De hitte van onze planeet zou het de JWST namelijk extra moeilijk maken. Bij de Hubble-telescoop was het nog mogelijk om astronauten reparaties te laten uitvoeren, de nieuwe ruimtetelescoop onderhouden is praktisch onmogelijk.
Menselijke fouten en pech
De ontwikkeling en het testen van de JWST startte in 1996, met een oorspronkelijke planning in 2007 en een budget van 500 miljoen dollar. Omgerekend is dat bijna 874 miljoen euro, rekening houdende met de inflatie.
In 2005 werd er echter besloten om de plannen te schrappen en opnieuw te beginnen. Ook gooide de coronapandemie op het einde nog wat roet in het eten. Het totale budget werd uiteindelijk eind vorig jaar berekend op 9,7 miljard dollar of ruim 9,6 miljoen euro. Dat is voor de volledige ontwikkeling en het toestel werkzaam te houden in de ruimte.

Net geen twintig keer meer dan oorspronkelijk de bedoeling was. Een onafhankelijk onderzoek wees met de beschuldigende vinger naar defensie-, luchtvaart- en ruimtevaartbedrijf Northrop Grumman, dat de leiding had bij de ontwikkeling. Daar werden meerdere menselijke fouten gemaakt.
Ook moest er nieuwe technologie ontwikkeld worden om het concept werkbaar te maken. Experts zeggen volgens ‘The Verge’ dat de JWST zo uniek en complex is dat NASA nooit een realistische inschatting kon maken van de ontwikkeltijd en -kost.
Als alles goed gaat nog twintig jaar te gaan
De ingenieurs en wetenschappers zijn er gelukkig in geslaagd om de JWST op een erg efficiënte manier op z’n plek te krijgen. Daardoor wordt geschat dat de telescoop nog zo’n twintig jaar in gebruik kan blijven. Dat zei projectleider Bob Ochs tijdens een persconferentie, schrijft de website ‘Space.com’.
Al is daar een flinke portie geluk voor nodig, want kleine meteorieten kunnen ernstige schade toebrengen aan de spiegels. Wat dus onmogelijk gerepareerd kan worden. Begin juni was het al zover, maar ingenieurs kon de schade beperken door de spiegels opnieuw af te stellen, rekening houdend met de vervorming.
Vier centrale thema’s
De JWST heeft meerdere instrumenten aan boord, waaronder NIRSPEC. Dat is een spectograaf en kan dus straling meten die bijna infrarood is en afkomstig van objecten als sterren(stelsels). Die werd getest in de faciliteiten van het Centre Spatial de Liège.
Samen met de andere instrumenten zullen wetenschappers op basis van gegevens die de JWST verzamelt onderzoek doen naar vier thema’s.
Zo wordt er gekeken naar het universum vlak na de oerknal. De telescoop kan namelijk licht detecteren dat miljarden jaren de tijd nodig had om tot bij de aarde te geraken. De JWST kan dankzij z’n gevoeligheid 13,6 miljard jaar in het verleden kijken.
Daarnaast zal ook onderzoek worden gedaan naar hoe sterrenstelsels evolueren in de loop der tijd. De grote spiralen, zoals die van het Melkwegstelsel, zijn namelijk niet per se de standaard. Zo zijn er ook elliptische stelsels, die ontstaan zijn door het samensmelten van kleinere exemplaren. Sterrenstelsels die ver weg liggen zijn bovendien eerder klonterig. Hoe die dan veranderen naar een duidelijkere structuur is dus de vraag.
Ook wil men met de JWST kijken naar de geboorte van sterren. Dat kon al met de Hubble-telescoop, maar het feit dat het nieuwe apparaat veel beter infrarode straling kan opvangen, is beloftevol. Er zal opnieuw gekeken worden naar de Pilaren der Creatie in de Adelaarsnevel. Een foto ervan uit 1995, gemaakt door de Hubble-telescoop, is één van de bekendste beelden van het universum, maar er valt nog meer te ontdekken door de kracht van de JWST.
Tot slot: exoplaneten. Er zal met de JWST gekeken worden naar plaatsen buiten ons zonnestelsel waar de bouwstenen voor het leven te vinden zouden zijn. Wetenschappers kunnen namelijk de telescoop gebruiken om te kijken naar wat er in de atmosferen van die planeten zit. Verschillende chemische elementen breken het licht van sterren namelijk op een andere manier, wat kan worden gedetecteerd met een spectograaf zoals de NIRSPEC.
De JWST en wetenschappers hebben dus nog veel fascinerend onderzoek voor de boeg. En het brede publiek zal nog vaak kunnen genieten van prachtige foto’s van de sterren en daar voorbij.

A new Record for the Strongest Magnetic Field Seen in the Universe: 1.6 Billion Tesla
A team of astronomers using the Chinese Insight-HXMT x-ray telescope have made a direct measurement of the strongest magnetic field in the known universe. The magnetic field belongs to a magnetar currently in the process of cannibalizing an orbiting companion.
Magnetars are nasty, but thankfully rare. They are a special kind of neutron star that power up the strongest known magnetic fields.
Astronomers don’t know the exact origins of these ultra-powerful fields, but as usual they have their suspicions. While neutron stars are made of almost entirely neutrons, they do contain small populations of protons and electrons. When neutron stars are born in supernova explosions of a massive star, those charged particles can briefly create a strong magnetic field. In normal neutron stars, the magnetic field quickly melts away from all the complex physics happening in the explosion. But for some neutron stars, the magnetic field locks itself in before that happens. When the neutron star finally reveals itself, it retains this impressive magnetic strength, and a magnetar is born.
But most of the time astronomers have to make due with indirect measurements of magnetar magnetic field strengths. Thankfully, sometimes astronomers can get lucky.
Recently a team of astronomers used the new Chinese Insight-HXMT observatory to study J0243.6+6124, an ultraliminous pulsar in the Milky Way. This pulsar has an orbiting companion that wandered too close. The pulsar’s extreme gravity is currently in the process of tearing apart the companion, forcing its material into a thin accretion disk around the pulsar.
Occasionally the gas in the accretion disk flares, producing a flash of incredibly bright x-rays. In the spectrum of those x-rays the astronomers found an absorption line caused by electrons knocking away x-rays. Those electrons can only get that kind of energy if they’re powered by a magnetic field, and so through that observation the astronomers were able to directly measure the magnetic field strengths.
They estimated a field strength of 1.6 billion tesla, which is about a million billion times stronger than the Earth’s magnetic field.

On July 13, 2022, my brother and I were outside looking at the supermoon and skywatching when we decided to try the Quantum UFO Observation Technique using telepathy to send out a message. I said "If there are any non-human entities in the area please let yourself be known." Two minutes later my brother spotted a bright object the size of an aspirin held at arm's length headed straight towards us from the west. I got out my camera and just as it was over head at about 80 degrees the object veered to the NE, making a change in trajectory. I filmed it using my cell phone video. The object had a rounded shape on the bottom and it was a very bright blue/white light with a dark ring around it. The pictures do not show how bright this was. There was no sound. I looked up the ISS and it WAS visible in Independence at that exact same time, except it was at 48 degrees at its highest point and it did not change trajectory. I also looked up Flight Radar 24 and there was nothing at that time that was in the sky. Also in the video but not visible to the naked eye was a beam of light that appeared near us and a stationary linear object in the sky for which I can find no explanation.

Look at this! An eyewitness was flying to Las Vegas when he noticed something below. Three landed or hovering bright white UFOs seen hidden between the mountains. This is the exact same region that Charles Hall marked as the Tall White Alien base. The Tall White base is a base of aliens that have a height of 2-3 meters tall depending on age, they live upto 800 years where they choose to die out of cultural beliefs. The base is on Nellis AFB private protected land, so its surrounded by barbed wire fence and its near Area 51! This is the best example of a Tall White ship I have ever seen! Fantastic catch, and may never be seen again.

From an airplane taking off from Las Vegas, after we did a u-turn to head north, I saw these lights on the ground about (I'm guessing) fifteen or twenty miles west of the city. The video does not do justice to how bright these things were, it was a bright sunny day, and these things were like giant welding torches, with their artificial light spreading for miles. There's probably a good explanation for them, but I don't know of any myself, so I'm reporting it.

An eyewitness in Florida caught sight of eight glowing orbs which they say lasted about five minutes or more in the sky. The orbs were huge, round and yellow. I believe these too are white light, but the setting sun makes them appear yellow. Strange Repeating Heartbeat Radio Signal Detected In Depths Of Space
Weirdly Slow Radio Burst in Space Is 'Like a Heartbeat' Researchers think it came from an especially intense pulsar or magnetar. Astronomers have detected a strange radio signal that emits periodically “like a heartbeat” and is coming from the depths of space.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States were caught by surprise due to the intensity of the radio bursts, as well as their regularity.
The signal is classified as a fast radio burst (FRB), which are intense bursts of radio waves of unknown origin.
This one studied by scientists at MIT and other institutions is currently the longest-lasting FRB to date, with the clearest periodic pattern.
Named FRB 20191221A and discovered in 2019, the signal persists for much longer - around 1,000 times longer in fact - than the typical FRB, raising questions about what could be causing it.
FRBs tend to last for a few milliseconds at most, but FRB 20191221A goes on for up to three seconds, with radio waves repeating every 0.2 seconds in what the astronomers call a “clear periodic pattern”.
What could be causing it?
While mysterious radio signals from space often set off excited talk of potential communication from aliens, the explanation is likely that the signal comes from a rare type of star.
Astronomers suspect the signal could be coming from a type of neutron star, which are extremely dense, rapidly spinning collapsed cores of giant stars, left over from supernovas.
The scientists, publishing their work in the journal Nature, say it could be caused by a radio pulsar or magnetar star, both of which are types of neutron stars.
“There are not many things in the universe that emit strictly periodic signals,” said Daniele Michilli, from MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.
“Examples that we know of in our own galaxy are radio pulsars and magnetars, which rotate and produce a beamed emission similar to a lighthouse. And we think this new signal could be a magnetar or pulsar on steroids”.
‘Boom, boom, boom’
“It was unusual. Not only was it very long, lasting about three seconds, but there were periodic peaks that were remarkably precise, emitting every fraction of a second – boom, boom, boom – like a heartbeat. This is the first time the signal itself is periodic,” he explained.
The team wants to detect more signals from the source, which they say could be used as an astrophysical clock.
The astronomers say there were similarities found between FRB 20191221A’s radio bursts and those found in our own galaxy. However the pulse from FRB 20191221A appeared to be more than a million times brighter than those other signals.
Michilli added that the detection raises more questions about what could cause such an extreme signal that has never been seen before.

The recording is dated from January 17, 2012 and the images were filmed in the main square of the town. That day there was an intense electric storm with high winds.
The amateur video caught the silhouette of what was supposed to be a UFO moving through the skies. The UFO appeared after a bright strike of lightning.
At that time began the cries of panicked citizens who witnessed the unknown object and reacted to the intense lightning.
The video of the UFO or eventually a TR-3B is shown in its entirety, and at the end UFOcasebook has added a slow-motion close-up and an enhanced frame capture.

James Webb’s First Full-Color Images
After 20 years of waiting, they’re finally here! The first scientific images were released from the James Webb Space Telescope. One image was revealed on Monday afternoon, and the rest were shown off early Tuesday morning. Among the collection, there was a deep field image of a gravitational lensing galaxy cluster, the planetary nebula surrounding a dying star, a star-forming region in the Carina nebula, a group of galaxies called Stephan’s Quintet, and spectra from an exoplanet. It was an incredible day, and we released a video that focused on explaining the images, which I think you’ll enjoy.

We got that amazing release of Webb images on Tuesday, but the telescope team gave us a bonus image of Jupiter just a few days later. This photo demonstrates that Webb can capture data on objects inside the Solar System and see galaxies out to the edge of the observable Universe. You can see the Great Red Spot and smaller storms in the cyclonic bands stretching around the planet. And if you look closely, you can see the shadow of Europa just to the left of the Great Red Spot.
During one of the tests of Booster 7, which is the first stage of Starship, there was an unplanned explosion. It doesn’t seem that the detonation was too serious, but one of the problems was that all 33 Raptors V2 were installed. So now SpaceX needs to assess the damage, which might cause further delays for the first orbital test of the Starship.
Mission to Neptune Could Happen After All. Just Not With NASA
NASA and ESA have no plans to send a mission to Neptune in the following decades, but another country has stepped forward: China. The Chinese National Space Agency announced its plans to send a nuclear-powered orbiter to Neptune to study the planet, its rings, and moons. In addition to the main spacecraft, it’ll carry several smaller probes which will be deployed into the atmosphere or Neptune or to visit its moon Triton. If could launch by 2030, arriving in 2036.
When a star gets too close to a supermassive black hole, it gets torn apart. You’d assume the material would be sucked into the black hole, lost forever. Astronomers watched this happen in a distant galaxy, and much to their surprise, most of the material flew out of the black hole’s accretion disk and off into space. It appears that black holes are pretty sloppy eaters, consuming very little of the stars they destroy.
Europa is one of the most fascinating worlds in the Solar System. Underneath kilometres of ice, there’s probably an ocean of liquid water. Could there be life down there? A new NASA NIAC grant has awarded a team $125,000 to investigate how a future mission could melt down through the ice on Europa and then release a fleet of swimming cryobots that could explore the ocean for evidence of life. These cell phone-sized swimmers could operate independently or work together in schools to share their science instruments.

This just in, a person heard about other recent Florida UFOs seen this week and reported one that they recorded two years ago over Naples that looks even more awesome. This UFO looks like it had just exited a wormhole and its colors are vibrant. Fantastic catch. No its not SpaceX or NASA rocket launch, its something bigger. The US gov tries to spread disinformation about fake launches to cover up giant UFOs seen near Florida. 100% alien!

A bright light about half the size of the moon was what seemed to be pulling in this fog from a cloud like object. Very vibrant in color. There was also Another light object that was moving below it as well. 2 light sources and 1 cloud like thing that was pulling light and fog from one another.

Guys, my jaw just hit the floor when I recorded this from the live space station cam. The camera went to blue screen twice, then came back on to show this arm...but then they forgot to hit blue screen and accidentally for the first time in history...revealed them dumping their garbage on all humanity! Now they will say it will burn up in the atmosphere, but I know not everything burns up in the atmosphere. I have a bookshelf full of meteorites both stone, glass and metal behind me as I write this. This garbage is going to fall onto us! Onto all life on earth and may spread out for thousands of miles hitting the US, China, Russia, Europe, Asia! WTH is NASA thinking to do this horrible atrocity. NASA is suppose to be better than this!

On July 12, NASA held an international live stream releasing the first official images from the James Webb Space Telescope showing distant exoplanets, galaxies, nebula, and a glimpse deep into our universe.
The next day, NASA stealthily released an image of Jupiter taken by the Webb Telescope, which showed a noticeable dark field just above the gas giant's atmosphere.
Was it a shadow, as NASA appeared to claim, or something entirely different – part of a newly arrived extraterrestrial space fleet secretly parked around Jupiter?
Note: If it was a shadow of one of Jupiter moons, like Europa, then it must casting a black shadow on Jupiter's clouds but this dark field doesn't look like a shadow, it looks like a solid object in free space.

“A former air force chief claimed today how he saw a UFO firing four beams of light at a nuclear missile undergoing testing.

A former air force chief claimed today how he saw a UFO firing four beams of light at a nuclear missile undergoing testing.
Ex-US Air Force First lieutenant Robert Jacobs alleged a craft, resembling a flying saucer, circled the dummy warhead during a test flight in California, during 1964.
But despite his claims of what he saw, the former serviceman was ordered never to breathe a word of what he saw, a bombshell press conference heard.
Along with other former American air force chiefs Dr. Jacobs was giving evidence about how aliens tampered with weapons systems during tests, at nuclear bases and even shut the missiles down.
Giving his testimony at the National Press Club in Washington DC, he said: “I was part of a US Airforce cover-up. It was shaped like a flying saucer and was firing a beam of light at our warhead.”
On September 14, 1964, he was in charge of a 100-man unit, Jacobs had been despatched to the Big Sur in California to photograph, with high-speed instrumentation, at Atlas-D missile launch from Vandenberg.
This is because all three stages of the rocket’s powered flight were to be observed, including the separation of a dummy warhead on the edge of space.

But the next day Dr. Jacobs, now a professor at Bradley University, said he was called into the office of Major Florenze J Mansmann, where three people in grey suits were standing — whom he later claimed were CIA.
He said: “Major Mansmann said lieutenant, sit down and watch this. He turned the projector on and the most amazing thing happened.”
Dr. Jacobs continued: “We could see the bottom three stages of that rocket filling the frame from 160 miles away.”
“It was amazing, the clarity was beautiful and we watched it go through all three stages of powered flight.”
“The nose cone opened up and radar chaff, aluminum foil, spread out.
“We were testing to see if we could launch a nuclear warhead into orbit, slightly above the nuclear chaff, so the Russians would aim their anti-missile missiles at the chaff, and our little warhead would fly over and obliterate Moscow.
“That was the game we were playing. Horrifying to think about it in retrospect.”
The camera that allegedly filmed the UFO at the edge of orbit.
But suddenly, from in the frame, he claimed they saw an object following the test missile, which was traveling at 8,000mph.
The UFO was said to have homed in and fired four beams at the warhead.
Dr. Jacobs said: “Then it flew out of the frame the same way it had come in. At that point, the warhead tumbled out of space.”
“The light came on and Major Mansmann and the two guys in grey suits looked at me, and the major said ‘were you guys screwing around up there (at camera site) I said ‘no sir’.
“And he said ‘what was that?’ and I said it looks to me like we have a UFO.”
But the baffled, young lieutenant was ordered to belt up, or else.
Dr. Jacobs said: “He escorted me to his door and said I don’t need to remind you of the seriousness of the security breach. I said no sir.”

“But as I left, he leaned over to speak in my ear, as if to say something the guys in the suits couldn’t hear.”
“He said ‘lieutenant if you were ever tortured in the future, somebody has you up against the wall and they’re frying your privates with fire, you can tell them this, it was laser tracking.”
“But we never had laser tracking in 1964.”
He added: “What we are here today to tell you, is this is a real event that is the most important event in the history of mankind. We are not alone.”
Four former USAF captains will speak about worrying incidents going back several decades and show declassified government documents.
They are calling for the US Congress to investigate and hold public hearings into reports that UFOs have disabled nuclear weapons.
Former Air Force officer, Robert Salas, was the on-duty commander of an underground launch control facility assigned to Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, US on March 24, 1967.
Major Florenze J. Mansmann ordered him never to speak of what he had seen ever again.
He claims all ten of his intercontinental ballistic missiles became inoperable.
Salas added that eight days earlier, on March 16, 1967, a similar incident occurred at another missile launch control facility.
Speaking to Sun Online, he said was hopeful following the press conference the US Air Force would finally break its silence about UFOs.
He said: “We hope to put enough pressure on people in government to call for open hearings.
“If we have open congressional hearings we will know a lot more about the subject because there is a lot of documentation and credible witnesses out there who are reluctant to testify.
“The Pentagon is hoping they can just sit back and write their little reports to congressional committees and then it just gets lost in the background.
“That’s another reason I am doing this is to keep the pressure and keep it out in the media and again and hopefully we can make some inroads.
“The USAF has been silent. The navy has come out and said they have now procedures for the pilots to report these sights.”
The UFO topic is becoming more serious and scientific, which is why every piece of news that comes out related to Unidentified Flying Objects quickly goes viral. Now a mysterious object has emerged from the Indian Ocean, just 700 kilometers from Madagascar.

UFO emerges from the sea
The island of Reunion , located in the Mascarene archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 700 kilometers east of Madagascar.
On the night of October 11, Sandrine Fontaine captured a video of a large unknown flying object hovering over the ocean .

According to experts who have examined the video, the object is very similar to the UFOs that were photographed from a US submarine in 1971 .
At the moment it leaves the water, the object’s profile is shown as a triangular shape . A very characteristic form that has been filmed on other occasions.
An example of strange craft with these shapes is the TR-3B anti-gravity aircraft . However, it is obvious that what is shown in the video emerges from the sea .
In fact, many experts consider that it is not a UFO, but a USO , so it could belong to an underwater base .
Human or alien?
Many people on the internet have raised the possibility that this is reverse-engineered human technology . Using alien technology captured in the past.
They have even mentioned the possibility that it is part of a space fleet capable of traveling to other planets in the Solar System.
There is also the possibility that we are facing a real alien spacecraft. Theorists have even speculated for years that an underwater extraterrestrial base could exist near the island , where an alien race could live .

A UFO in the form of a flying silver ball was recently seen and filmed in Menlo Park, California, USA. The object appeared to be large enough.
A man from Menlo Park in California was resting near the house the other day with his mother and son when they noticed something strange in the sky.
The object was shaped like a metal ball, which was probably quite large, as it was clearly visible even from a decent height.
It was a clear day, not a cloud in the sky, and the slowly flying UFO didn’t look like a weather balloon or drone at all. It flew and rotated at the same time.
According to the author of the video, their entire family watched the object for 15 minutes before it slowly rose vertically and disappeared from view.
Some ufologists call such small objects UFO patrols and say that it is not difficult to see such objects if you know what time is best to keep an eye on the sky.
According to ufologists, patrols are alien drones that are capable of scanning the earth. These devices monitor the Earth, keep track of all events taking place on the planet and transmit this information to the main “headquarters”, where it is analyzed and, as necessary, decisions are made on “intervention” in the affairs of earthlings.

After the ‘big reveal’ earlier this week of the James Webb Space Telescope’s first full color images and spectra of the universe, the science team has now released data from closer to home. One stunning shot includes Jupiter and its moons, and there are also data from several asteroids. These latest data are actually just engineering images, designed to test JWST’s ability to track solar system targets, as well as test out how the team can produce images from the data. The quality and detail in these test images have excited the mission scientists.
“Combined with the deep field images released the other day, these images of Jupiter demonstrate the full grasp of what Webb can observe, from the faintest, most distant observable galaxies to planets in our own cosmic backyard that you can see with the naked eye from your actual backyard,” said Bryan Holler, a scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, in a NASA blog post. Holler was part of the team who helped plan these observations.
This view from JWST’s NIRCam instrument’s short-wavelength filter clearly shows the distinct cloud bands around the giant planet as well as the Great Red Spot, Jupiter’s famous gigantic storm. Scientists say the iconic spot appears white in this image because of the way Webb’s infrared image was processed.
Also clearly visible at left is Europa, which is seen as a dark spot with bright edges, nd interestingly, in the infrared, Europa is bright enough to create diffraction spikes. Diffraction spikes come from the hexagonal shape of the mirror segments, diffracting the light from bright objects like stars, or in this case a nearby moon.
But look closely, and Europa’s shadow can be seen to the left of the Great Red Spot. Other visible moons include Thebe and Metis, which are seen as small, white spots.

Even Jupiter’s thin rings are visible in some of the new images, using JWST’s NIRcam long-wavelength filter image. The very diffuse rings were first discovered by the Voyager spacecraft in 1979.
“What JWST will do for Jupiter’s rings is give exquisite image stability and quality, to characterize ring structure, and its sources, sinks and evolution,” said Heidi Hammel on Twitter, Hammel is a JWST interdisciplinary scientist who has early observing time on the telescope to study Jupiter.

Scientists were very eager to see these images because they are proof that JWST can observe the satellites and rings near bright solar system objects such as Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. Some exciting upcoming observations is to use the new space telescope to look for plumes of water spewing out of moons like Europa and Saturn’s moon Enceladus. Webb may be able to see the signatures of plumes depositing material on the surface on Europa.
“I think that’s just one of the coolest things that we’ll be able to do with this telescope in the solar system,” said Stefanie Milam, Webb’s deputy project scientist for planetary science NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
Astronomer Judy Schmidt was able to retrieve the JWST data of Jupiter and create this image, which she shared on Twitter. Even the Great Red Spot is bright enough with the NIRCam data to create diffraction spikes.
But other unusual features show up as well, and scientists aren’t sure yet if the “extra outline” on the eastern limb is real or an image artifact.
Heidi Hammel commented that her team noticed “that weird edge right and started discussing detached haze layers or air glow.” This illustrates how scientists are still learning how to interpret JWST’s infrared data. But to reiterate, Hammel added, “The Jupiter teams are so excited!”
JWST also obtained these images of Jupiter and Europa moving across the telescope’s field of view in three separate observations. This test demonstrated the ability of the observatory to find and track guide stars in the vicinity of bright Jupiter.

Scientists were very interested to test out how fast an object could be moving and still be tracked by JWST, and to do so, during the commissioning period, Webb tracked an asteroid called 6481 Tenzing, located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Engineers said that JWST was designed with the requirement to track objects that move as fast as Mars, which has a maximum speed of 30 milliarcseconds per second. During commissioning, the Webb team conducted observations of various asteroids, and proved they can get valuable data with all of the science instruments for objects moving up to 67 milliarcseconds per second, which is more than twice the expected baseline. They said it is “similar to photographing a turtle crawling when you’re standing a mile away.

This mysterious object appeared in the sky over Miami yesterday during sunset. The eyewitness described it as a giant sperm with several small stars in it. Now some will say its SpaceX rocket, but I see no rocket. Can you? However I do see a huge tear drop disk in the sky that is semi transparent and then turns invisible. There is also some small lights that come from it and seem to fall. I believe these to be small transport ships bringing people to an underwater alien base off the shores of Florida.

Coming home from work tonight I looked up and saw this bright white trail is what I thought was a cloud at first. As it continues to move, the smoke/cloud trail also continued. In the video you see as it continues to "fly" the air around it is billowed around it like it's affecting the air space.

On July 14, 2022 residents were stunned by the sight of a strange phenomenon in the sky in Haikou, capital of South China’s Hainan. The footage which was recorded by a local resident appears to show a mysterious city floating in the sky.
