An alleged photo from the Project Blue Book files shows a cylindrical UFO believed to hover over New York City on March 20, 1950. 

It is said that the military tried to cover up the image of the UFO by saying it might have been 'the moon', which of course was a ridiculous statement. 

Another attempt to cover-up the image of the UFO, before the material was finally declassified and released, was to delete the name of the person who took this photo from the project's files as were most of the names who were involved in this case. 

In our article from March 11, 2023 we wrote that the Pentagon said that alien motherships possibly sending probes to earth. Now, the 1950 image of the cylindrical UFO shows many small probes launched by the UFO believed to be a 'mothership' which is not only proof that the Pentagon already knew years ago about the existence of "alien motherships" that for some reason release small probes into the Earth's atmosphere but also we may wonder why the Pentagon after so many years is starting to talk about these 'motherships' that release small UFOs. They must have a good reason to go public on this subject.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope spots a huge star 30 times bigger than our sun on the brink of going SUPERNOVA

• Rare sight of a Wolf-Rayet star one of the first observations made by James Webb
• Is among most luminous, most massive, and most briefly detectable stars known

This astonishingly-detailed image captures the rare sight of an enormous star's dying days, before it explodes into a supernova and collapses into a black hole.

The Wolf-Rayet phase – which lasts a few million years at most – is a key stage in the evolution of massive stellar giants.

This one, named WR 124, is 15,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius and was snapped in unprecedented detail by NASA's new $10 billion (£7.4 billion) super space telescope, James Webb. 

t is 30 times bigger than our sun and currently blowing off its outer layers in preparation for its impending death.

As it does this, the star emits a huge cloud of dust and gas which then cools and produces a beautiful halo that glows in infrared in this spectacular new image.

WR 124 has already ejected 10 suns' worth of material into space and once the star runs out of heavy elements it can fuse, it will explode. 

Massive stars race through their lifecycles, with only a few experiencing a brief Wolf-Rayet phase before going supernova.

In fact, just one in a hundred million are classified a Wolf-Rayet — ferociously bright, hot stars doomed to imminent collapse in a supernova explosion leaving a black hole.

The fact that the Wolf-Rayet stage is so rare and brief makes this detection by Webb a key discovery. 

It was one of the first observations made by the telescope when it began collecting data back in June 2022. 

The image is important because it should help astronomers figure out exactly how dust behaves and whether the dust grains are large and plentiful enough to survive the upcoming supernova.

Dust is a vital component of the universe and how it works. 

It comes together to help form planets, protects stars as they form and enables molecules to form and clump together, such as those that led to the building blocks of life on Earth.

Similar dying stars first seeded the young universe with heavy elements forged in their cores – elements that are now common in today, including on our planet. 

However, the universe is actually operating with a 'dust budget surplus', and it is this which has mystified astronomers.

They say there is still more dust out there in the enormous void of space than current dust-formation theories can explain.

Webb is key to the whole thing because its infrared vision can peer beyond cosmic dust and get a glimpse of the internal workings of stars like WR 124, which are ejecting dust into space. 

It is a special trick that other space telescopes such as the iconic Hubble can't do.

NASA's new telescope is capable of using its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) to help observe stars like WR 124, because it balances the brightness of their stellar cores against the intricate details of the fainter gas that surrounds them.

The telescope's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) is then able to reveal the gas and dust nebula of the ejected material enveloping the star. 

Before Webb came along, astronomers lacked the key detailed information they needed to explore questions of dust production in environments such as WR 124.

Now they hope to be able to see whether dust grains are large enough to survive a supernova and, in turn, become an important contributor to the overall dust budget.

'Webb's detailed image of WR 124 preserves forever a brief, turbulent time of transformation, and promises future discoveries that will reveal the long-shrouded mysteries of cosmic dust,' NASA said.

The James Webb telescope has been described as a 'time machine' that could help unravel the secrets of our universe.

The telescope will be used to look back to the first galaxies born in the early universe more than 13.5 billion years ago, and observe the sources of stars, exoplanets, and even the moons and planets of our solar system.

The vast telescope, which has already cost more than $7 billion (£5 billion), is considered a successor to the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope

The James Webb Telescope and most of its instruments have an operating temperature of roughly 40 Kelvin – about minus 387 Fahrenheit (minus 233 Celsius).

It is the world's biggest and most powerful orbital space telescope, capable of peering back 100-200 million years after the Big Bang.

The orbiting infrared observatory is designed to be about 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA likes to think of James Webb as a successor to Hubble rather than a replacement, as the two will work in tandem for a while. 

The Hubble telescope was launched on April 24, 1990, via the space shuttle Discovery from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.

It circles the Earth at a speed of about 17,000mph (27,300kph) in low Earth orbit at about 340 miles in altitude.

TR-3B UFO sighting over Halifax, West Yorkshire, UK – March 2023

In March 2023, a witness in Halifax, West Yorkshire captured some footage of what appears to be a TR-3B UFO. This sighting is particularly interesting because of the clear view of a black triangle between the lights.

The footage captured by Ryan, the witness in Halifax, shows three lights in a triangular formation. The lights appear to be moving slowly and silently across the night sky. In between the lights, a black triangle can be seen. While it is difficult to determine the exact size and distance of the object, it appears to be relatively large and relatively close to the witness. Ryan submitted this footage to us through our Facebook page!

Some skeptics may dismiss this sighting as a hoax or a misidentification of a known aircraft. However, the witness’s report that the object was seen over several nights and the clear footage of the black triangle suggest that this may indeed be a genuine sighting of a TR-3B.

It is worth noting that there have been numerous other sightings of triangular-shaped UFOs in recent years, both in the UK and around the world. While some of these sightings can be explained as misidentifications of known aircraft or natural phenomena, others remain unexplained.

Regardless of the explanation for this sighting, it serves as a reminder that there is still much that we don’t understand about our world and the universe around us. Whether or not the TR-3B is real, the possibility of advanced technology and extraterrestrial life should continue to inspire curiosity and exploration.

Ex-US Naval Officer Saw UFOs & Secret Alien Base Hidden In Antarctic No-Fly Zone

Antarctica is one of the isolated regions, away from civilization on Earth, which makes it the most favorable area to conduct a secret research operation or a place where extraterrestrial life would take shelter. UFO whistleblower named “Brian S,” who served in the US navy, testified that he had seen the entrance to a secret alien base and unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in the Antarctic while he served in the US Navy.

On January 2, 2015, Earthfiles reporter and editor Linda Moulton Howe received an email from Brian, who introduced himself as a retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class flight engineer. Then 61-year-old navy personnel joined the US navy in 1977 and retired 20 years later in 1997. He provided Linda with his DD214 documents and other certificates of service, including an Antarctic Service Medal given to him on November 20, 1984.

Brian told Linda that his C-130 crew encountered high strangeness while they were flying cargo and doing rescues in Antarctica from the period of 1984-1985 to 1997. Several times, he and the C-130 crew watched silver discs darting around in the sky over the Transantarctic Mountains that separate East Antarctica from West Antarctica.

Brian and his crew also saw a huge football field-sized hole in the ice only about five to ten miles from the geographic South Pole that was supposed to be an air sampling station but in a no-fly zone.

Linda said that during an emergency medevac crisis, to speed up their trip, the crew flew across that no-fly zone and apparently saw an alleged entrance to what was rumored to be a human and ET science collaboration research base under the ice.

Then, at a camp near Marie Byrd Land, a dozen of scientists disappeared for two weeks and when they reappeared, Brian’s flight crew got the assignment to pick them up. Brian said the scientists would not talk and their faces “looked scared.”

Brian and his flight crew received several orders at different times not to talk and were sternly told, “You did not see the ice hole, you saw nothing.” But Brian was never asked to sign an official non-disclosure statement. He is convinced that non-humans were and probably are now working on this planet.

He said in his email to Linda: “Talk among the flight crews was that there is a UFO base at the South Pole and some of the crew heard talk from some of the scientists working at the pole that EBAs (extraterrestrial biological entities) worked with the scientists beneath that air sampling camp large ice hole near the pole.”

Below is a transcript of the interview that took place between Linda Howe and Brain S at the KGRA radio station on September 11, 2017:

Linda: Let’s start by unfolding chronologically. You were assigned to Antarctica around 84 to 85 and you were in the C-130 crew. Can you tell me about the first high-strangeness event that occurred? You were based out of McMurdo and you got an emergency medevac call. Can you tell me what happened?

Brian: From what I remember, our crew was getting ready that morning. We were preparing to go down to the airfield and preflight the aircraft, loading it for our mission. Our mission that day was not going to the South Pole, but rather a science resupply somewhere on the western side of the continent.

It was a short flight, probably an hour and a half to 45 minutes to the science party that had been deployed. However, we received a change of mission when we went to operations. We were told to take one of our model aircraft, fuel it up to maximum capacity, fly to the South Pole, and then top off the fuel again before flying to Davis [Station] for a medevac of someone who had become injured and needed to be taken off the continent immediately.

We arrived at the South Pole without incident. The flight was normal and no cargo was loaded onto the aircraft. We had an extra couple of people on the crew, one of them being our corpsman, and our flight surgeon was also brought on the aircraft. They would be responsible for taking care of the patient after we picked them up and all the way back to McMurdo.

While I was fueling up the aircraft at the South Pole, our navigator was plotting a course from the South Pole to Davis. I did not know that we were going to deviate from the original plan until we were already deviating. The pilot asked our navigator, “Where are we going now? We’re not going where we thought we were going.”

We were directed to fly a certain course, which happened to be going right over an air sampling station, which was approximately five to ten miles further on from the South Pole. This area was not a normal transit zone for our squadron, and the captain asked the crew or the navigator about the no-fly zone. If we could go through that new flight no-fly zone, we would be able to save time on this medevac issue. That discussion was happening after we took off.

As a crew, we decided to take the direct route to Davis instead of deviating 20 miles around the air sampling station, which is approximately what they required us to do if we were to go in that direction.

So, we decided to fly right over it. We took off from the South Pole and, remember, the altitude at the South Pole is somewhere between 11,000 and 12,000 feet, so we were climbing at full fuel load out of the South Pole.

We were going to be climbing to about 25,000 feet for our first altitude and then, as we burned off fuel, we would become lighter and be able to climb higher, which also allowed us to get better fuel efficiency out of our engines and extend our range a bit. We took off and were climbing, and about five to ten miles out, someone decided to look out the window instead of looking at their instruments and the radar.

The navigator noticed and said, ‘Hey, there’s this big dark spot out here.’ So, we ended up flying not directly over it, but somewhat offset, so that we could look out the left side of the aircraft and it was down at about a 45-degree angle and there was this large opening in the ice where the air sampling station was supposed to be.”

Linda: Just a second, Brian, because I remember asking you in our interview how big you estimated it to be and if it looked somewhat structured.

Brain: I estimated that you could have flown one of our aircraft into it. The wingspan of our aircraft is around 135-138 feet wide, so it would have had to have been large enough to accommodate that wingspan. But it was probably more the size of a football field if you can imagine that…

One thing I want to mention is that when we were flying over there, we could see lines in the ice or snow, as if someone had driven through with a vehicle, such as a snowmobile or one of the tractored vehicles called ice cats. These tracks seemed to be a route back and forth from the South Pole station to an opening that we could clearly see from our altitude.

It was very distinct, and anything that makes a line in the ice is immediately recognizable. However, it was still supposed to be a no-fly zone and it did not make sense to our pilot. The hole was estimated to be at least 300 feet in diameter, about the size of a football field.”

Linda: Can you describe the kind of rumor talk that you were exposed to after sitting down with people and talking? The guy who showed up and told you all to keep your mouth shut, yeah.

Brian: I was going to talk about that. I want to finish what our mission was to Davis and then the trip back to the South Pole to refuel…We ended up getting to Davis about four hours later. We landed and were sitting on the ground with the engine still running. They brought out the person who was injured, we loaded them on the aircraft, got turned around, set power, and took off.

We were on our way back to the South Pole when we started to get near that same opening we had crossed by when we were going to Davis. We got within a certain distance, I think it was within 25 miles or something. The reason I remember that is because our navigator said, ‘okay, we’re coming up on that opening again’ because the navigator tracks our distance and position all the time.

He wasn’t part of the squadron, but he was dressed in the regular green fatigues that everybody wore down there when they weren’t on flight status. He came in, had his parka on and his stocking cap, and sat down. He took off his jacket and looked at all of us and said, “Okay, so you guys went through the no-fly zone north of the pole and violated that airspace restriction.”

Our aircraft commander said, “Yeah, we did. We thought it was prudent that we not waste any time and shave some time off our flight time to get to the medevac that was at Davis. We were told it was important and not to waste any time, so we made the decision to fly over that air sampling station.”

Like we were talking earlier, there was no reason why we couldn’t fly over that area because we were going to be so high up that our exhaust from the engines wouldn’t have mattered. The gentleman basically looked around at all of us sitting at the table and looked at each one of us and said, “Okay, gentlemen, what you saw, you did not see. You were not over that area and you will not ever talk about this again.” There was no repercussions or any threat like, “If you do talk about it, this or that is going to happen.”_

We didn’t think anything of what it might be at that time, but later on, during missions to the south pole, our crew stopped and we had to actually spend some time there because we had some dignitaries and VIPs that wanted to do a tour of the south pole facility. We were told, “Okay, just shut down your engines and leave someone on the airplane to watch it and fuel up again for your return trip to McMurdo.”

We all went into the dome at the south pole. Back then, there was a big, huge geodesic dome that had buildings inside of it that the team and scientists that stayed at the south pole lived in. We all went inside and they had these large mill vans or the SEA vans that you see on container ships, like big containers.

They had made those into buildings, so there were two-story ones all over. One of the two-story ones was a bar or a club, so we went up there and we were sitting around talking, drinking sodas, and trying to get warm. There were some civilians in there, I assume they were scientists.

One of my loadmasters happened to overhear one of them saying something about the operation or what was going on out at the air sampling station. Later, we were talking to other crews and they had heard similar things when they were at the south pole but they heard that there were “visitors” that they were going out to interact with.

So, at this point, we were all confused and trying to piece together what could be happening out at that air sampling station. We started to think that maybe there was some sort of secret government operation or research happening out there involving extraterrestrial life.

Uncovering Kentucky’s Unbelievable UFO Sightings: 5 Mind-Blowing Encounters Up Close

Kentucky is known for many things, such as horse racing and bourbon, but it’s also home to some of the most fascinating UFO sightings in history. From a police UFO showdown to an alleged abduction, these five cases of UFO sightings will leave you wondering about what’s really out there.

Police UFO Showdown

On February 27, 1993, two officers of the Jefferson County air unit were on their routine helicopter patrol when they encountered a glowing pear-shaped object the size of a basketball. The object began flying in circles around the chopper before shooting three baseball-sized fireballs. The officers maneuvered to avoid being hit, momentarily losing control of the helicopter. When they tried to check where the UFO was, it had disappeared. An officer on the ground later confirmed that he too saw the object before it vanished. While some believe it could have been a meteorite or atmospheric conditions, the officers are convinced they encountered a UFO.

Casey County Abduction

On January 6, 1976, three women from Liberty, Kentucky, were driving home when a bright red orb appeared in a clearing ahead of them. The driver lost control of the car, and the UFO almost enveloped them. The women later found themselves at home with two hours missing from their memory. They also had a red irritation mark on the back of their necks and burning eyes. Through hypnosis, they were able to recall seeing shadowy humanoid figures with large heads and wide eyes trying to communicate with them telepathically. The reason for their alleged abduction remains unknown.

Hopkinsville Encounter

On a summer evening in August 1955, Billy Taylor saw a silvery colored flying object cruising through the night sky above a remote farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. When he went to tell the Sutton family, who owned the land, they didn’t believe him. Shortly after, their dogs began barking incessantly, and the men went outside armed with a rifle and shotgun. They encountered a small creature with a huge oversized head, arms that extended almost to the ground, and sharp talons on its hands. The creature’s body shimmered in the moonlight, and it had green lizard-like skin. Terrified, the men fired at the creature, but it fled. For the next several hours, more creatures appeared and disappeared. Despite investigations, no one knows exactly what those men saw.

Alien Shootout

The idea of “Little Green Men” comes from what occurred one evening on a remote farm in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, on August 21, 1955. On January 27, 1977, Lee Parish was driving home from hanging out with his girlfriend when he noticed an object hovering just above the tree line. The object had a perfect rectangular shape and was about 10 feet wide and 40 feet long. Parish felt like he was in a trance and was unable to move throughout the ordeal. After a few minutes, the UFO sped away without making a sound, and Parish found himself at home without a clear recollection of how he got there. Under hypnosis, he described being in a circular white room with three large figures that he instinctively felt were sentient beings but were not human. The figures were a black one, a red one, and a white one. The black one was the tallest and resembled the shape of a shooting target, while the red one was about the same size as Parish. The white one was six-footed and had two appendages and was the leader of the trio. Parish felt like they were trying to tell him telepathically that they were checking his chemical and physiological makeup. Despite some suggesting that Parish could have seen atmospheric conditions, he strongly believes that he was abducted and examined.

These five cases of UFO sightings in Kentucky are fascinating, and while skeptics may dismiss them as make-believe, those who experienced them are convinced that they saw something out of this world. Whether it was a police UFO showdown, an alleged abduction, or a close encounter with sentient beings, these sightings leave us wondering about what’s really out there. Congressman Says Alien UFO Tech Is Being 'Reverse Engineered' in Secret

Post-flight inspection shows a significant amount of original Avcoat material remained on Orion. Thermal protection system experts have correlated the timing of descent through the atmosphere with data from hundreds of sensors as well as gathered imagery and video. Teams are assessing this set of data to understand the phenomenon.

Experts also continue to assess an issue seen during the flight where latching current limiters switched open without commanding several times throughout the mission. These switches, which are circuit breaker-like devices that are part of a power conditioning and distribution unit responsible for taking power generated by the solar arrays and preparing it for distribution to systems, help control power to components in the service module. Engineers are reviewing flight data to understand the source of the issue and plan to conduct testing in a flight-like configuration.

Progress Toward Artemis II

While work is underway to understand every issue, NASA is making progress assembling, testing, and processing the elements for Artemis II ahead of the late 2024 mission. The heat shield will be attached to the crew module in May, and the crew module and service module will then be connected ahead of integrated testing. The SLS solid rocket booster motor segments and core stage will be shipped to Kennedy later this year, after the engine section and RS-25 engines are connected to the rest of the already-complete stage. Teams expect to transport the mobile launcher to launch pad 39B this summer for testing, including evaluation of the emergency egress capability needed for Artemis II. The recovery team, along with personnel from the Department of Defense, recently completed rigorous testing of a new crew module test article in support of Artemis II efforts and will conduct open water recovery testing in the coming months to ensure the crew on board are quickly and safely removed from the spacecraft.

Archaeology Enigmas: Four Mystery Doors That Should Never be Opened (Video)

Archaeology is a field that is constantly searching for new discoveries and secrets buried deep in the past. Some of the most intriguing archaeological mysteries involve doors that have remained sealed for decades or even centuries. These doors hold the potential to reveal hidden treasures and long-lost secrets, but they also pose a challenge to archaeologists who must figure out how to open them without damaging what lies inside.

Take, for example, the Taj Mahal in India. This iconic building is not only a symbol of eternal love but also a place shrouded in mystery. The Ancient ‘Computer’ That Simply Shouldn’t Exist (Video)

When we think of ancient technology, we often imagine simple tools and primitive machinery. But what if we told you that over 2,000 years ago, the ancient Greeks had built the world’s oldest computer? That's right, we're talking about the Antikythera mechanism , a complex device discovered in a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in 1901.

This incredible machine contained a system of gears and cogs that was able to predict astronomical positions and eclipses with incredible accuracy. It's no wonder that some have called it the world's first computer, a marvel of engineering that was centuries ahead of its time. The Antikythera mechanism is a reminder that even in the ancient world, there were minds that were capable of incredible feats of technology and innovation.

The team reported the unexpected discovery of a solo galaxy (3C 297) about 9.2 billion light-years away. They also noted that it contained a quasar at its center and powerful jets (bright in the radio spectrum) emanating from its poles. The environment of this galaxy appears to have several key features of a galaxy cluster; nevertheless, the galaxy appears to be alone. As Missaglia said in a Harvard-Chandra press release, “It seems that we have a galaxy cluster that is missing almost all of its galaxies,” she said. “We expected to see at least a dozen galaxies about the size of the Milky Way, yet we see only one.”

Missaglia and her colleagues noted three features associated with galaxy clusters based on the Chandra data. First, the X-ray data revealed that 3C 297 is surrounded by large quantities of high-temperature gas (tens of millions of degrees) – something rarely seen outside of galaxy clusters. Second, the relativistic jet streaming from its SMBH created a bright X-ray source about 140,000 light-years away, which implied it had pushed through gas surrounding the galaxy. Third, one of the radio jets appeared bent, indicating it was interacting with its surroundings.

This last finding was previously observed based on data collected by the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). But when the team consulted their data from the Gemini Observatory, they noticed that none of the 19 galaxies that appeared close to 3C 297 were actually at the same distance. Said co-author Juan Madrid, an assistant professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley:

“The question is, what happened to all of these galaxies? We think the gravitational pull of the one large galaxy combined with interactions between the galaxies was too strong, and they merged with the large galaxy. For these galaxies, apparently, resistance was futile.”

While the authors cannot rule out the possibility of dwarf galaxies located around 3C 297, their presence would still not explain why no larger galaxies are nearby. In addition, they anticipate that 3C 297 will spend several billion years on its own before it gains any large galactic companions (like M87 and the Virgo Cluster). While it is not clear how 3C 297 ended up on its own in a cluster-like environment, the team theorizes that it could be a “fossil group” – the end stage of a galaxy merging with several others.

While many other fossil groups have been detected before, at 9.2 billion light-years distant, this one is the most distant ever seen. The previous record holders for fossil groups were 4.9 and 7.9 billion light-years away (respectively). “It may be challenging to explain how the universe can create this system only 4.6 billion years after the Big Bang,” said co-author Mischa Schirmer of the MPIA. “This doesn’t break our ideas of cosmology, but it begins to push the limits on how quickly both galaxies and galaxy clusters must have formed.”

If a 50-meter-wide asteroid were to plunge through Earth’s atmosphere, it could create an airburst with as much power as a nuclear bomb. Such an blast, known as the Tunguska event, took place over Siberia in 1908, leveling hundreds of thousands of acres of remote forest land. A similar smashup in just the wrong place could destroy a city. It wouldn’t be as deadly as the cosmic impact that killed off the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, which is thought to have been caused by an asteroid 6 to 10 miles wide, but it could spark a global emergency.

An asteroid search program that’s based in Chile’s Atacama Desert discovered 2023 DW in February, and some of the projections of its trajectory intersected with Earth’s orbit on Feb. 14, 2046. Its size — described variously as being as big as an Olympic swimming pool, the Leaning Tower of Pisa or 27 pandas — was estimated based on its brightness.

NASA took the sighting seriously enough to give it a 1 on the 1-to-10 Torino scale, which is used to rate the risks of near-Earth objects. 2023 DW is currently the only object to have a non-zero rating. Some went so far as to chart where the asteroid might strike if it hit Earth. (The possibilities range across a line extending from just off the southern tip of India to just off the U.S. East Coast.)

Astronomers emphasized that the risk assessment, which stands at 1-in-670 today, is based on a highly limited amount of data about the asteroid’s orbit around the sun. That uncertainty is visualized as an “error ellipsoid,” with Earth somewhere within the elongated egg-shaped zone of uncertainty.

“Often when new objects are first discovered, it takes several weeks of data to reduce the uncertainties and adequately predict their orbits years into the future,” NASA explained in a series of tweets.

The more observations you accumulate, the smaller the error ellipsoid becomes. And it often turns out that astronomers can identify a newly discovered asteroid in archived observations, providing more data points for refining their orbital projections. What typically happens is that the error ellipsoid eventually shrinks to a size that leaves out Earth.

If the risk assessment changes significantly in the weeks ahead, we’ll update this item to reflect the change. In the longer term, brace yourself for asteroid alerts of this level to become more routine.

When the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile begins a wide-angle survey of the sky in 2024 or so, it’s expected to identify thousands of potentially hazardous asteroids. NASA’s NEO Surveyor mission, planned for launch in 2028, will also add substantially to the asteroid count. A cloud-based data analysis technique pioneered at the University of Washington with support from the Asteroid Institute and the B612 Foundation could streamline the tracking process — and make it easier to distinguish the near-misses from the genuine threats.

What if a genuine threat is detected? NASA and the European Space Agency are already looking into ways to divert a more-than-potentially threatening asteroid. Last year, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test showed that an impacting spacecraft could alter an asteroid’s orbit, and a follow-up ESA mission called Hera will quantify the effect more precisely.

By the time 2023 DW shows up for its Valentine’s Day date in 2046, the world’s space agencies and policymakers should know what to do in case the close encounter threatens to get hot and heavy.
