Closest pair of supermassive black holes as seen by MUSE
In this Picture of the Week we peer closer into the galaxy UGC 4211, where astronomers have discovered two supermassive black holes on the verge of merging, separated by just 750 lightyears — the closest to have been found to date and less than half of the previous record. They used ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), of which ESO is a partner, and other telescopes to detect the bright light produced as the black holes engulf material in their vicinity.
The image shown here was made using data from the MUSE instrument on ESO’s VLT in Chile. It shows emission from oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen in blue, green and red respectively. Red indicates areas of star formation, and the bright white central region indicates the presence of two supermassive black holes swallowing material from their surroundings.
Combining data from the VLT, ALMA and other telescopes, a team led by Michael Koss at Eureka Scientific in the US could identify these two black holes and study them in detail. These black holes likely found each other when their host galaxies collided and merged. Observing this system will help improve our understanding of how galaxies and their supermassive black holes grow as they merge.
Most people don’t know that near the famous trio of pyramids in Giza, Egypt, there are two other pyramids of which only their foundations remain.
One of them is called the unfinished North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan, almost 5 km southeast of Giza; the other, smaller, is called Layer Pyramid.
Archaeologists think that they are unfinished pyramids, but at UfoSpain we believe that they were actually destroyed a long time ago.
We looked on the internet for information about the unfinished North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan, and found that the information was often wrong and misleading.
The pyramid is not unfinished, the underground structure is not a burial chamber or tomb, and the granite bathtub they found is not a sarcophagus.
We always like to go to the original source, which, in this case, is the Italian archaeologist Alessandro Barsanti, who found the remains of the pyramid in the early 1900s and began excavating in 1904.
His original report, in the French language, contains descriptions of the underground corridors, the chamber, and the curious oval bathtub. His description of this stone vat and how it was sealed and protected is truly remarkable.
Although Barsanti was impressed by the high quality of the stone work of the descending shaft and the open room at the bottom, no one else investigated this monument.
Since 1964, the pyramid has been placed in a restricted military area, and further excavation is prohibited.
The entire base of the North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan is cut from the local limestone rock. Its base is 200 meters, which would make it almost as tall as the Great Pyramid of Giza. A large descending tree was cut from this rock leading to an underground chamber.
Archaeologists still attribute this interior space to a funerary function, where the pharaoh was supposed to be buried, despite the fact that all the stone chests (other than sarcophagi) found in the pyramids were empty, and all the pharaohs and aristocrats They were buried in the Valley of the Kings.
As some researchers have pointed out, the construction of the pyramids and their interior design show that they were technological devices intended to harvest energy, from the earth and the cosmos, and to use this energy probably for multiple purposes.
Some people say that the pyramid builders (in Atlantean times) used liquids and gases inside the pyramids, which is interesting because of the granite vat found at the base of Zawyet El Aryan’s North Pyramid. .
Others say that the underground veins of water produced electricity and sound vibrations that were amplified by the construction of the pyramid.
At this time we don’t know for sure how the pyramids worked because the Atlanteans used a very different technology, and the remains were ruined.
Yes, most of the pyramids were built over twelve thousand years ago during the Atlantean period. After their disappearance and the destruction of the coastal lands by huge tsunamis, much of what was in Egypt was left in ruins.
After several thousand years, the dynastic Egyptians settled there, adopting the pyramids and all that they found, into their own culture.
For example, we see that some of the dynastic temples, built with small stones, were built on large blocks of stone weighing several tons, which were the remaining base of the Atlantean buildings.
What has also been pointed out is that at one point, probably when the Atlantean civilization came to a catastrophic end, there was a malfunction in the pyramid technology and explosions occurred.
There are other nearby pyramids that show signs of explosive destruction with stone blocks scattered around them. One of them is the Bent Pyramid of Dashur, which has one corner dismantled as if by an explosion.
The northern pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan may also have been blown up, as many stones were found scattered around it.
The reason why only the base remains today is easy. In the last thousands of years, people nearby have used the stones to build their own houses.
Why go stone mining, when you can use already cut stones from old monuments? Apparently, when the Roman Empire occupied Upper Egypt, they used this monument as a stone quarry.
Even in recent times, the stones were used by the local population as building materials.
What remains today of the North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan, however, is still very interesting, complete with a mystery that also hints at unusual and ancient technology.
Italian archaeologist Alessandro Barsanti began excavating the underground structure of the North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan in 1904. He was the only one to ever examine this structure.
He left us some very interesting descriptions. The original report of him was published in the Annales del Service des Antiquités de Egypte, tome VII , of the Institut Français d’Archéologie Orientale du Caire , in 1906.
Although not much remains of the North Pyramid of Zawyet El Aryan, we can point out some characteristics that make it not a tomb but a technological construction, the purpose of which is still unknown.
The bathtub is the most interesting of all. Why cut it out of one of the granite blocks of the pavement? It had a perfectly fitted granite top on top, and was polished like a mirror on the inside.
These features create a very strong link to the Serapeum’s underground granite coffers. These oversized chests, also mislabeled tomb ( for the bulls! )..
They had perfectly fitting tops, and their inside walls were not only level to a fraction of an inch and at perfect ninety degree angles, they were also polished like a mirror.
By the way, the Serapeum arks cannot be manufactured or duplicated by our modern technology.
So why was it necessary for the bathtub to have a smooth interior mirror? And why was it oval, which is more difficult to make than a simple rectangular box?
We imagine that it was after the destruction of the pyramid (by an explosion), that the caretakers sealed the tub with a layer of lime and limestone blocks.
They could also have filled the chamber and corridor with stones and rubble. It is quite possible that these people did not ultimately survive the catastrophe, and the vat thus sealed remained so until Barsanti discovered it again.
There could be more underground passages yet to be discovered, as Barsanti noted that after heavy rain, “the shaft was flooded to a height of three meters. Around midnight, the water dropped abruptly by about a meter.”
We can only explain this phenomenon by assuming that it is submerged in an underground tunnel, large enough to hold 380 cubic meters of water.
One wonders why the Egyptian authorities are not interested in further excavations. They are always eager to discover a hidden tomb full of treasures..

Scientists have discovered a common thread between the monstrous black holes that lurk at the hearts of galaxies and subatomic glass condensates created in collisions of atomic nuclei.
Scientists have found a surprising connection between supermassive black holes and densely packed "walls" of gluons, tiny subatomic particles that hold quarks together to birth protons and neutrons.

Scientists have discovered a surprising connection between the supermassive black holes that dwell at the hearts of most galaxies and dense walls of subatomic particles called gluons.
In terms of size, they couldn't be more different: Supermassive black holes can be billions of miles across, and the dense walls of gluons, known as color glass condensates (CGCs), are less than a billionth of a mile in diameter.
Yet a team of scientists from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Brookhaven National Laboratory has discovered that supermassive black holes and CGCs are similar in that they are made of densely packed, fundamental force carrier particles called bosons.
For CGCs, these bosons are gluons, particles that carry the strong nuclear force responsible for "gluing together" elementary particles called quarks to form protons and neutrons, which make up the atomic nuclei of all ordinary matter. For supermassive black holes, the constituent densely crowded particles are gravitons, hypothetical particles that carry the force of gravity.

In both systems, the bosons are arranged in the most energy- and size-efficient configuration. This creates a high degree of order that is typical of both CGCs and black holes, with both systems packing in the maximum amount of quantum information possible about their constituent bosons , including their spatial distribution, velocity and collective forces.
Because the limits placed on quantum information are universal, researchers can learn more about one system of densely packed bosons by studying the other.
As a result, the secrets of distant and inaccessible supermassive black holes could be revealed by examining CGCs in labs here on Earth. In particular, scientists could look at the "gluon shock waves" created in CGCs during particle collisions to learn more about the gravitational shock waves that are produced when two black holes collide and merge to form an even more massive black hole.
CGCs are created when atomic nuclei are accelerated to near the speed of light and then slammed together. After these collisions, conducted at facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Upton, New York, the CGCs "melt" to form a nearly perfect liquid of quarks and gluons. While investigating this process to learn more about the strong nuclear force, the team found that gluons appear to organize themselves in a way that conforms to a universal limit on the amount of entropy, or disorder, that can exist in a system. The enormous conglomerates of gravitons that make up black holes are also believed to arrange themselves according to this limit.
This mathematical similarity suggests there is a correspondence between how black holes are born, reach thermal equilibrium with their environment and even how they may eventually decay, and how walls of gluons collide in nuclear collisions at near-light speeds.
The limit placed on entropy behind this similarity is related to a key feature of quantum information science (QIS) called maximal information packing. Therefore, to learn more about the connection between black holes and gluon walls, scientists must turn to QIS. In turn, the study of these systems could ultimately prove useful for the development of quantum computers, which depend on tightly packed cold atoms to perform calculations.

The ice sheet thickness and movement speed therefore vary a great deal over longer periods, and the mountain range further into the continent seems to be an important division between the dynamic coast and the ice sheet further towards the South Pole, which varies much less in thickness.
Sixty per cent of the world's fresh water is bound up in Antarctic ice sheets. Thirty million cubic kilometres of ice is perhaps a difficult number to grasp. But if absolutely all Antarctica's ice melted, the seas would rise by 58 metres on average.
"The ice sheet in East Antarctica stores enormous amounts of water. This means that this is the biggest possible source of future sea level rise - up to 53 meters if all of the East Antarctic ice melts - and is seen as the largest source of uncertainties in the future sea level adaptation planning," says Irina Rogozhina, an associate professor at the Department of Geography at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Most melting/ice loss in Antarctica happens through ocean-driven melting of ice shelves and ice calving. This, in turn, leads to an acceleration of ice streams on land and a greater discharge of ice into the ocean, where it gets lost to melting/calving, she said.
This was also likely the cause of larger ice loss during warmer periods of the past. In Greenland, these two processes contribute about 65% of all ice loss.
But not all the ice needs to melt before it can have major consequences.
Researchers from NTNU were among a group of scientists who examined the ice in Queen Maud Land in East Antarctica. The results show that this ice sheet sector has varied a lot over time. This information is important as researchers try to learn more about the planet's climate and how it is changing.
Rogozhina's group studied the ice sheet in East Antarctica and a meltdown that took place a few thousand years ago. The results have been published in the Nature journal Communications Earth and Environment.

The researchers analysed the rocks for cosmogenic isotopes that can tell them how long it has been since the rocks were covered by ice. The ice in the east lies on land The ice sheet in Antarctica is not evenly distributed or uniform. In the west, large parts of the ice sheet lie under sea level, down to a depth of 2,500 metres. This makes it very vulnerable to ocean warming. In contrast, much of the ice sheet in the east sits directly on land, above sea level, meaning it is less sensitive to the ocean's influence.
This ice sheet sector in East Antarctica was thinner in the past than it is now, and not particularly long ago either. In fact, it was thinner following the end of the last ice age, when massive ice sheets previously covered North America, northern Europe and southern South America. When these ice sheets melted, they raised the sea level by more than 100 metres.
"From the evidence we presented in our study, we concluded that the East Antarctic ice sheet in Queen Maud Land also melted rapidly along its margins between 9,000 to 5,000 years ago, in a period we call the mid-Holocene. At this time, many parts of the world experienced warmer-than-present summers," Rogozhina said.
"Although this kind of response by the East Antarctic ice sheet to the warmth during the Holocene is not completely unexpected, it is still difficult and worrisome to believe that the sluggish East Antarctic ice sheet can change so rapidly," she said.
It's difficult to find a simple, easy explanation for this behaviour, or to determine the exact timing when the melting took place, not least because the conditions in this part of the world are rather inhospitable at times.
But the researchers found a way to unravel this mystery.
Cosmic radiation changes rocks The research group examined rocks from various nunataks in Queen Maud Land for exposure to cosmic radiation.
"Nunataks are mountains that stick up through the ice. We have visited nunataks and taken samples," says Ola Fredin, a professor at NTNU's Department of Geosciences and Petroleum.
The researchers examine different isotopes, or variants, of elements such as chlorine, aluminium, beryllium and neon in rocks from the nunataks. With the help of cosmogenic isotopes, they can figure out how high the ice was over geological time in Queen Maud Land. Fredin compares this to using a dipstick to measure the level of engine oil in your car.
In this way, the researchers can say something about how long the rocks have been exposed to cosmic radiation. They can then also say something about how long it has been since the rocks have been under a protective layer of ice and thus have not absorbed any cosmic radiation.
For this, they use data from different areas and run a variety of computer simulations.
Rising seas and warmer water broke up the ice The researchers also believe that they are on track to find a reason why the ice sheet sector in East Antarctica thinned so much immediately after the end of the last ice age.
"We believe that the ice sheet became less stable due to higher, regional sea levels and warmer water rising from the ocean depths in the polar regions, penetrating under the ice margins and melting them from below. This leads to the break-up of large icebergs and accelerates the movement of ice from the land to the ocean, which in turn thins the inland section of the ice sheet. The process is similar to when a house on a hill slope loses its supporting foundation and starts sliding downhill," Rogozhina said.
In short, the less stable, rapidly flowing parts of the ice sheet in East Antarctica, which are called ice shelves and float on the ocean, were broken up more easily, which in turn led to the ice sheet becoming much thinner within a relatively short time, geologically speaking, or a few hundreds to thousands of years.

Thick ice is the most common along the coast Cosmic radiation can also help researchers figure out how common it is for ice to cover an area. The researchers have also investigated this.
The results show that it is most common for the ice in Queen Maud Land to be thick along the coast. But not further into the continent, where mountain peaks protrude through the ice and the land can be several thousand metres high.
"We found that the land masses along the coast of Queen Maud Land have been covered by ice between 75 and 97 per cent of the time during the last one million years," Fredin said.
He was part of another study, which has also had its results published in the Nature journal Communications Earth and Environment. This group examined rocks from several different areas in Queen Maud Land, and found great variations.
"In contrast to areas along the coast, which have been ice-covered most of the time, we find that mountain summits further into the continent have been ice-covered as little as 20 per cent of the time," Fredin said.

On December 9, 1965, something unusual fell from the sky and landed in the forest outside Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. Witnesses described it as an acorn-shaped metal object with peculiar markings. A Strange Discovery on Mars
In 2021, a peculiar pair of long parallel lines leading to a half-buried disc on Mars caught the attention of researchers. The disc, estimated to be between 12 and 15 meters in diameter, featured a perfectly shaped crescent edge. Some speculated that it could be the remains of a crashed flying saucer, prompting questions about its origin and purpose.
Theories on Martian Civilizations and Alien Visitors
George Haas, director of The Cydonia Institute, suggests that ancient civilizations, such as the Cydonians, may have once thrived on Mars. He points to evidence of pyramidal structures and mound formations on the red planet that defy natural explanations. However, Haas believes that these civilizations vanished millions of years ago after a nuclear Armageddon.
Some speculate that the crashed UFO on Mars could be linked to the “Grays,” an alien species believed to have visited Earth for millennia. It has been suggested that these extraterrestrial beings might have experienced a similar crash in Roswell and could have lost control of their vehicle on Mars as well.
Experts Weigh In
Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy argues that the Martian disc’s smooth crescent shape could potentially be a heat shield from a failed probe. However, he also notes that the width and depth of the trench surrounding the object seem inconsistent with a heat shield crash.
NASA geologist Bob Anderson offers an alternative explanation for the mysterious formation, stating that it is located in Candor Chasm, an area with volcanic planes and a combination of sedimentary layers and volcanic lava flows. According to Anderson, the parallel lines are ancient geologic cracks, and the object’s perfect curve could be due to wind patterns.
Conclusion: Unexplained Phenomenon
Despite various theories, the Kecksburg UFO and the Martian disc remain unexplained phenomena. While Dr. Anderson’s theory offers a plausible explanation for the Martian formation, McCarthy’s argument about the object’s perfect curve raises questions. Until we can examine these findings more closely, the mysteries of the Kecksburg UFO and the Martian disc continue to captivate our imaginations and fuel debates about the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
Although thousands of abductions are reported annually, only a fraction of them are attributed to the so-called alien hybridization. Hybridization involves experiments with reproductive organs, leading many victims to believe they are being used to cross-breed with alien life forms. One such incredible case is of a UFO abductee named Geraldine Orozco, who claimed to have been abducted eight times and was part of a top-secret alien hybrid breeding program. She is a skilled professional in various fields, including being an Intuitive DNA Reprogrammer, Ascension Coach, Speaker, Expo Host, and Hypnotherapist.
In the TV series “UFO Witness,” former FBI agent Ben Hansen visited Orozco to investigate her abduction case. She revealed to him that she had been pregnant for eight weeks when she miscarried. A fetus should have been visibly present. But even though her doctor confirmed Orozco was having the signs of a miscarriage, there was no sign of the fetus.
Orozco told Hansen: “I would see the doctor and see different doctors over the years, they wouldn’t know how to explain what had happened to me. And of course, neither did I. So then I said, okay, maybe I can’t have children.” In 2013, she had a vivid experience and claimed to have been abducted and taken onboard a spaceship.
“I was sleeping, and all of a sudden I wake up because there was a bright light in my room. And as I look down at my phone, it says 3:30 in the morning. And part of me was a little bit afraid at that moment because I was thinking, is there someone outside my window? So I look outside my window and the light is so bright that it’s burning my eyes.”
She continued: “And the next thing I know, my entire body paralyzes. And I feel my body being taken through the window. I was brought to a craft, I was paralyzed. This being comes next to me, and I’m terrified at this point, but I can’t even scream.” Orozco described it feeling as if her body was being pulled apart.
Hansen then asked her to describe the alien. She recalled encountering six tall humanoids (typical Greys). “They are these grays they have these giant eyes. The Greys, also known as the Zeta Reticulans, are said to be tall, slender creatures with large eyes and gray skin,” Orozco explained.
Orozco claimed that the aliens introduced her to her 8 hybrid children and imparted intriguing knowledge. “This being is showing me these children. As I’m looking at these children and I see what they look like, they’re not all the way human. This gray, thin skin, a much bigger head, and these giant eyes that are so deep and so profound and so complex. It was just incredible. But what I recognized as I’m meeting the child is that it’s mine. It looks like me. It has something that is a part of me.”
Orozco had always wondered why she could not get pregnant, despite her and her partner’s efforts to conceive a child. She thought it was just a case of miscarriages. But one night, everything changed. She realized that her unborn children were not lost to miscarriages, but instead were taken from her womb and experimented on by extraterrestrial beings.
During her harrowing experience, she witnessed her unborn child being mutated with alien DNA, leaving her feeling helpless and confused. “As I’m seeing the child in front of me, I know that it’s mine, and I’m wanting to take care of them. And before I start to feel that, they immediately remove everything away from me. And then I’m opening my eyes, and I’m upside down on the end of my bed,” she explained.
Orozco’s experience was not a dream, but a real-life encounter with alien beings. She was abducted from her home in the early hours of the morning and taken aboard a spacecraft for experimentation. As she tried to piece together what had happened to her, she realized that this had been going on for years, and she was not alone. According to her, over a million women claim to have similar experiences.
This experience activated her psychic abilities and allowed her to access exalted multidimensional knowledge. However, upon returning to her normal life, she discovered that this experience had resulted in her becoming hypersensitive to the human electromagnetic field.
To learn more about what had happened to her, Orozco underwent regression sessions with hypnotherapists. During those sessions, she uncovered memories of repeated abductions since childhood and gained insight into the reasons behind her early abduction experiences.
Orozco was surprised to discover that she channeled information about the universe and ancient DNA alterations on planet Earth during those regressions. In November 2017, she underwent the second regression that delved deeper into each abduction experience to understand the hybridization program and how it operates among humans. NASA's Martian Helicopter Has Been Very Busy
Around three years ago NASA launched the Ingenuity Helicopter which eventually touched down on Mars early the next year. Since 2021, NASA has been consistently flying the helicopter trying new and more ambitious routes each time. Just yesterday on the 5th, Ingenuity was scheduled for its 50th flight, expected to travel more than 1000 feet or around 306 meters in total.
The whole purpose of this helicopter was to determine if powered, controlled flight at the Red Planet was possible. If this were the case, it would open up a lot of future opportunities as NASA sets its sights on sending humans to the planet. In the over 2 years Ingenuity has been on the surface, not only has it shown that powered flight is possible, but it also has given the agency some new ideas.
What makes its tests so impressive is the fact that flight at Mars is extremely challenging because the Red Planet has significantly lower gravity and a very thin atmosphere. Here I will go more in-depth into the historic 50th flight, what exactly Ingenuity has been up to, why its results are so important, and more.

The Milky Way contains 4,000 times more water than the universe’s greatest water resource, which is the size of 140 trillion seas and is hidden under a distant supermassive black hole.
Twelve billion light-years distant, where it appears as vapor spread across hundreds of light-years, this amount of water was found by two teams of astronomers.
The reservoir was found in a quasar’s gaseous region, a luminous, compact area at the center of a galaxy propelled by a black hole. This discovery shows that water could have existed from the beginning of the universe throughout the whole cosmos.
Although specialists are not surprised by this, water has never been found this far out. This amount of water is thought to have existed when the universe was just 1.6 billion years old because it took the light from the quasar, namely the APM 08279+5255 quasar in the constellation Lynx, 12 billion years to reach Earth.
The Plateau de Bure Interferometer in the French Alps was utilized by one group, while the Z-Spec equipment at the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory in Hawaii was employed by the other.
The identification of trace gases (or enormous reservoirs of water vapor) in the early universe is made possible by these sensors’ ability to detect millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths.
Researchers have the information they required to determine the enormous scale of the reservoir thanks to the finding of several spectral signatures of water in the quasar.

Now this is interesting, hunters went out in search for prey when they encountered a glowing cube UFO. The cube is clearly lower in the beginning of the video and then much higher in at the end of the video. I use two specific bushes on the ground to get the right perspective and distance. Compounded with the fact they all forgot about the UFO, as if the UFO itself erased the person short term memory. But they found the video and remembered it. When I had a UFO of dozens of 747 size UFOs (many soldiers in the parking lot stared upward in silence at them for 15 minutes) sighting in Rapid City, South Dakota in the USAF back in 1990, I too forgot for a few days...oddly, not thinking about it at all, later realizing the memory was hidden from me by the UFOs themselves. Short term memory can be altered using alien technology. Clearly aliens use it when UFOs are seen but not wanting to be seen.

March 2023 has been a month of intriguing UFO sightings, as numerous videos have emerged, showcasing strange aerial phenomena and mysterious objects in the sky. The compilation video “Best UFOs of March 2023” highlights some of the most compelling sightings from around the world.
One of the most talked-about incidents occurred in Sunrise, Florida, where three lights were seen forming an equilateral triangle before separating. This sighting was captured by multiple witnesses, adding to its credibility.
Another fascinating sighting took place in the Netherlands, where a polygonal-shaped craft was recorded floating through the sky. The witness managed to capture a few seconds of clear footage before encountering camera issues.

Astronoom Pieter van Dokkum bestudeerde beelden van ruimtetelescoop Hubble, op zoek naar bolvormige sterrenhopen in een nabij dwergstelsel, toen zijn oog ineens op een ‘krasje’ viel. “Ik zag een kleine streep op de foto,” herinnert Van Dokkum zich. “Mijn eerste ingeving was dat dit waarschijnlijk een kosmische straal was. Maar toen we kosmische straling weg filterden, zat het krasje er nog steeds. Het leek niet op iets dat we ooit eerder hadden gezien.”
Sterrenspoor Omdat het zo raar was, besloot Van Dokkum samen met zijn collega’s de gekke lichtstreep met behulp van het Keck-observatorium nader te bestuderen. De vraag is natuurlijk hoe deze lange slinger vol sterren is ontstaan. De onderzoekers vermoeden dat het sterrenspoor zich uitstrekt tussen een monsterlijk zwart gat en het sterrenstelsel waaruit dit zwarte gat is weggeslingerd. Waarschijnlijk perst het zwarte gat gas samen, wat leidt tot de geboorte van sterren. “We denken dat we het kielzog zien achter het zwarte gat, waar het gas afkoelt en sterren worden gevormd,” vermoedt Van Dokkum. “Wat we zien is de nasleep. Vergelijkbaar met het kielzog achter een schip, zien we hier het kielzog achter het zwarte gat.” De slinger moet bijzonder veel pasgeboren sterren bevatten, gezien het feit dat het bijna half zo helder is als het stelsel waarmee het verbonden is.
Zwart gat Kortom, het zwarte gat, met een massa van maar liefst 20 miljoen zonnen, heeft een 200.000 lichtjaar lang sterrenspoor achtergelaten, tweemaal de diameter van ons Melkwegstelsel. Het is een merkwaardig gezicht. Zwarte gaten staan doorgaans bekend als vraatzuchtige eters, die zichzelf volproppen met gas, stof en alles wat in hun greep komt. Maar in plaats van sterren op te slokken, zoals een kosmische Pac-Man, brengt het zwarte gat juist stervorming op gang. Het zwarte gat heeft zoveel haast, dat het niet eens de tijd heeft voor een snack. Iets soortgelijks is nog nooit in het universum gezien.
Galactisch biljart
Hoe dit vreemde tafereel is ontstaan? De onderzoekers vermoeden dat dit waarschijnlijk het resultaat is van een uiterst zeldzaam en bizar potje ‘galactisch biljart’ tussen drie enorme zwarte gaten, die met elkaar in botsing zijn gekomen. De eerste twee sterrenstelsels smolten ongeveer 50 miljoen jaar geleden samen, zo luidt de theorie. Dit bracht de twee zwarte gaten uit deze stelsels samen, waardoor ze om elkaar heen begonnen te wentelen. Vervolgens verscheen er een derde sterrenstelsel met zijn eigen superzware zwarte gat op het toneel. En zoals we allemaal weten: ‘twee is gezelschap en drie is een menigte’.

Weggeslingerd Er ontstond een chaotische en onstabiele situatie. Eén van de zwarte gaten delfde het onderspit en werd pardoes uit het gaststelsel geslingerd. Het originele, binaire paartje is mogelijk intact gebleven, of de indringer heeft mogelijk één van de twee andere zwarte gaten vervangen en de vorige metgezel uit het stelsel gegooid. Terwijl het weggeslingerde zwarte gat de ene kant op vloog, schoten de andere twee in tegenovergestelde richting weg. En dat brengt ons weer bij het begin.
Vervolgonderzoek De vondst van het weggeslingerde zwart gat dat een spoor van sterren creëert, is buitengewoon. De onderzoekers laten het onderwerp dan ook nog niet los. Vervolgwaarnemingen met ruimtetelescoop James Webb en het Chandra X-ray observatory liggen alweer in het verschiet, om zo de geopperde theorie over het zwarte gat te bevestigen of te ontkrachten.
Bovendien gaat de zoektocht naar andere vreemde ‘krasjes’ door. De hoop is daarbij gevestigd op NASA’s aanstaande Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. De onderzoekers hopen dat er op deze beelden meer zeldzame ‘sterstrepen’ zullen verschijnen, waardoor we meer over deze bizarre fenomenen te weten kunnen komen.
Virtually all astronomers and cosmologists agree the universe began with a “big bang” — a tremendously powerful genesis of space-time that sent matter and energy reeling outward.
BIG-TIME THEORY. The discovery of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) confirmed the Big Bang theory. The CMB’s clumpiness gives astronomers evidence for theories ranging from what our universe’s contents are to how modern structure formed.

The evidence is clear, ranging from the underpinnings of Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, to the detection of the cosmic microwave background by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in the 1960s, to the confirmation of ripples in the fabric of ancient space-time from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite in 1992. But the devil is in the details, and that’s where figuring out how Big Bang cosmology really works gets interesting.
The Big Bang model is typically broken down into a few key eras and events. Standard cosmology, the set of ideas that are most reliable in helping decipher the universe’s history, applies from the present time back to about a hundredth of second after the Big Bang. But before then, particle physics and quantum cosmology ruled the universe.
When the Big Bang occurred, matter, energy, space, and time were all formed, and the universe was infinitely dense and incredibly hot. The often-asked question “What came before the Big Bang?” is outside the realm of science because it can’t be answered by scientific means. In fact, science says little about the way the universe behaved until some 10–43 second after the Big Bang, when the Grand Unification Epoch began (and lasted only until about 10–35 second). Matter and energy were interchangeable and in equilibrium during this period, and the weak and strong nuclear forces and electromagnetism were all equivalent.
HIGH-RES ECHO. Evidence for the Big Bang comes from detailed data from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellites. In 1992, COBE produced the first good CMB map (top); nine years later, WMAP followed with a far-more detailed version.

The universe cooled rapidly as it blew outward, however, and by 10–35 second after the Big Bang, the epoch of inflation occurred, enlarging the universe by a factor of 1050 in only 10–34 second. During this wild period, cosmic strings, monopoles, and other exotic species likely came to be. As sensational as inflation sounds, it explains several observations that would otherwise be difficult to reconcile. After inflating, the universe slowed down its expansion rate but continued to grow, as it does still. It also cooled significantly, allowing for the formation of matter — first neutrinos, electrons, quarks, and photons, followed by protons and neutrons. Likewise, antiparticles were produced in abundance, carrying the opposite charge of their corresponding particles (positrons along with electrons, for example).
As time went on and particles’ rest-mass energy was greater than the thermal energy of the universe, many were annihilated with their partners, producing gamma rays in the process. As more time crept by, these annihilations left an excess of ordinary matter over antimatter.
Chemistry has its roots deep in the history of the universe. At a key moment about one second after the Big Bang, nucleosynthesis took place and created deuterium along with the light elements helium and lithium. After some 10,000 years, the temperature of the universe cooled to the point where massive particles contributed more to the universe’s overall energy density than light and other radiation, which had dominated until then. This turned on gravity as a key player, and the little irregularities in the density of matter were magnified into structures as the universe expanded.

The relic radiation of the Big Bang decoupled (picture heavy traffic suddenly clearing) nearly 400,000 years later, creating the resonant echo of radiation observed by Penzias and Wilson with their radio telescope. This decoupling moment witnessed the universe changing from opaque to transparent. Matter and radiation were finally separate.
Observational astronomers consider much of the history of the early universe the province of particle physicists, describing what happened up to the formation of galaxies, stars, and black holes as “a lot of messy physics.” They are more interested in how the first astronomical objects, the large-scale inhabitants of the universe, came to be about 1 billion years after the Big Bang. But before these astronomers can gain a clear picture of that process, they need to consider the role of the wild card — dark matter.

The ancient Egyptians were renowned for their worship of animals, and one of these was the baboon. In ancient Egyptian mythology, baboons are best known for their association with Thoth, the god of wisdom. In addition to their role in mythology, baboons also had a place in the society of ancient Egypt. They are commonly known to have been kept as pets, and mummified remains of these creatures have been discovered by archaeologists. In addition, baboons (or monkeys) have also been shown in Egyptian art to be participating in various human activities, including dancing and playing musical instruments, picking fruit, making wine and beer, and even catching criminals.
During the Old Kingdom, Hamadryas baboons ( P. hamadryas ) and olive baboons ( P. anubis ) could still be found in the southern parts of Upper Egypt. By the time of the Middle Kingdom, however, it is likely that these animals were no longer indigenous to Egypt. During the New Kingdom, there is evidence that baboons were being imported from the south, either from Nubia, or from the land of Punt.
During the Pre-Dynastic period , a certain god by the name of Baba / Babi was worshipped. The name of this god may be translated as ‘Bull of the Baboons’, and it was depicted as a baboon. It has been postulated that this may be the origin of the word ‘baboon’ itself. By the time of the Old Kingdom, however, the baboon became connected with Thoth, the ancient Egyptian god of wisdom. The association between the baboon and the god of wisdom was made perhaps because the former was perceived to be an intelligent animal.
As Thoth was the patron god of scribes, baboons, being his sacred animal, have often been depicted alongside people of this profession. Thoth was also believed to be a lunar god, and because of that, baboons are sometimes depicted with a crescent moon on their heads. This, in turn, may have led to the association of the baboon with another moon god, Khonsu. This is evident at the Temple of Khonsu in Thebes, where statues of the god in his baboon form can be found in front of the temple complex.

Yet another god linked with baboons is Re, the sun god. The ancient Egyptians observed that baboons would bark at the rising sun, and this was turned into images of baboons with raised arms in the act of worshipping the sun. Lastly, one of the Four Sons of Horus, Hapy, is believed to have had a baboon head. This god was in charge of protecting the lungs of deceased individuals.

As sacred animals, baboons were kept in temples, and cared for by their priests. Nevertheless, they were also kept as pets by those who could afford them, though for largely ritualistic purposes. Still, such pets were not always treated well by their owners. In Hierakonpolis, for instance, archaeologists have discovered a cemetery with the remains of various animals, including baboons, that were once kept as pets. The bones of the baboons suggest that they had been beaten repeatedly whilst they were alive. This cemetery is about 5000 years old, and dates to the end of the Pre-Dynastic period / the beginning of the Early Dynastic period. Therefore, it has been suggested that at this point of time, the ancient Egyptians were only beginning to learn how to keep animals as pets, and the beatings were meant to keep the baboons in line. As the Egyptians became better handlers, fewer beatings were administered to their pets, as seen in the remains of baboons from later periods.
In some works of ancient Egyptian art, baboons (or monkeys) are shown engaging in human activities. Some of these, like harvesting fruits from tall trees, could be plausible. In some parts of the world, monkeys are known to be trained to harvest fruits. In a tomb from the 12th Dynasty, baboons are even shown to be competing with humans for the collection of fruit.
Other baboon jobs, such as helping with alcohol production or rigging boats, seem a little more fantastical. Nevertheless, given that baboons were considered to be intelligent animals, it would not then be too surprising if the ancient Egyptians imagined baboons could do such activities.

With a mass of around three-quarters of our Sun crammed into a ball that could sit comfortably inside Manhattan, the compact object XMMU J173203.3-344518 is certainly remarkable. Weird, even. Maybe bizarre
But is it strange? A new study by astrophysicists from the University of São Paulo and the Federal University of ABC in Brazil confirms this mind-blowingly dense blob of star stuff might be strange indeed, but perhaps not in the way you might think.
Last year, researchers from the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Tübingen in Germany reassessed the distance between us and the tiny corpse of a dead star spinning away inside the supernova remnant HESS J1731-347.
A mere 8,150 light-years away, the revised proximity fell short of the previous estimate of roughly 10,000 light-years. The new distance required a recalculation of the compact object's characteristics, particularly its size and mass.
Which is where things got a little exciting.
When stars of a certain mass run out of the kind of fuel their gravity can conveniently crush the daylights out of, they collapse in a cosmic thunderclap of heat and electromagnetism that blows away a proportion of their outer layers.
All that's left is an object so dense its atoms are squeezed cheek to jowl. Deep inside its core, electrons are crammed into their nuclei, forcing protons to lose their charge and transform into neutrons. Congratulations, it's a newborn neutron star.
If there's enough mass, all of that added gravity overcomes critical nuclear forces to crunch matter into something unimaginable, creating a black hole instead. Too little mass, though, and atoms remain friendly neighbors inside what's known as a white dwarf.
That lower mass limit for a neutron star is thought to be just over one solar mass. The lightest detected so far is just 1.17 times the mass of the Sun.
At 77 percent of a solar mass, XMMU J173203.3-344518 isn't merely record-breaking; it's downright confusing. Neutron stars have no business being so petite.
Which implies it might not be a neutron star at all. Speculating it was instead an object called a strange star – consisting mainly of particles known as strange quarks – the researchers left their conclusions for other researchers to kick around.
Picking up where that last study left off, this new investigation returned to the unusually small compact object within HESS J1731-347 and double-checked its mass, radius, and surface temperature.
Comparing their results with strange matter equations and speculative models for their creation in supernovae, the team agreed this weird little object still has all of the hallmarks of a hypothetical strange star.
Quarks are fundamental particles that group in trios to create baryons. Two of the better-known examples of these groups are the nuclear particles protons and neutrons.
Concentrate enough energy in any one spot, and those bundles of quarky goodness can overcome the forces that bind them to arrange into something less structured. Put this hot soup under enough pressure, and its quarks might present as a new form of matter altogether called, unsurprisingly, quark matter.
Quarks happen to come in a variety of forms or flavors. 'Up' and 'down' flavors mix and match to form protons and neutrons. With sufficient pressure, down quarks can transform into up quarks, which in turn can switch into another flavor – a strange quark.
Just how a super compact object made mostly of strange quarks emerges from a supernova isn't clear yet, though some models suggest quark matter typically evolved right from the start of the collapse.
Under fairly unique conditions, something causes this matter to dominate, releasing even more energy in the collapse to shake off more mass than usual, leaving that surplus of quarks behind.
Returning to the latest study, its revised estimates of XMMU J173203.3-344518's age and surface temperature, along with the object's radius and tiny mass, are consistent with cooling conditions that hint at its strange composition.
That doesn't mean something more 'normal' can be ruled out. It does give the astronomical community even more reason to turn their telescopes towards XMMU J173203.3-344518 in consideration of it being a landmark case.
As the authors argue, "It is premature to claim any stronger conclusion, although this is an important case and other detections could add to the whole picture."
This research has been accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters and is currently available on arXiv.
