Just recently there has been some new debate on my 2020 book, The Rendlesham Forest UFO Conspiracy. No doubt, it’s because the 40th anniversary of the case is getting closer and closer. Indeed, I’m sure that when December of this year comes around we’ll be seeing a lot of debate concerning the incident(s). As for that new debate, it revolves around the specific issue of why I am so sure that the Rendlesham affair was a secret experiment, rather than an extraterrestrial event. There is one thing that surfaces over and over again in the story. It’s the matter of drugs. And nothing less than mind-altering drugs. Take a look at most UFO events and you’ll see witness testimony, documentation, and sometimes photos. It’s rare that drugs surface in relation to UFOs. In the Rendlesham Forest case, however, they are all over the place. Let’s take a look at the evidence. In my book, I point out that one of the key installations involved in the experiments was the Maryland-based Edgewood Arsenal. Fortwiki provides the following history on the Edgewood Arsenal: “A chemical weapons arsenal established in 1917 and located in the present day Edgewood area of the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The Edgewood area is about 13,000 acres on the west side of the Bush River that was used for the development and testing of chemical agent munitions. This area was originally a separate U.S. Army installation known as Edgewood Arsenal until October 1971 when it merged with Aberdeen Proving Ground and became the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground.”

Not only that: On December 9, 2012, The New Yorker ran an article titled “Operation Delirium: Decades after a risky Cold War experiment, a scientist lives with secrets.” The scientist was one Colonel James S. Ketchum, who spent approximately two decades in the U.S. Army. Ketchum “became the military’s leading expert in a secret Cold War experiment to fight enemies with clouds of psychochemicals that temporarily incapacitate the mind – causing, in the words of one ranking officer, a ‘selective malfunctioning of the human machine.'” It turns out that this highly classified program of mind-control was secretly run inside the confines of the Edgewood Arsenal.

Moving on: for years there have been rumors that throughout the several days of secret activity in the forest there was a presence from a certain facility situated in Wiltshire, U.K.: Porton Down. As the BBC note, U.K. military personnel were regularly used in secret mind-altering experiments at Porton Down in the 1950s and 1960s. The BBC expands on this: “Porton Down was set up in 1916. It was a center designed to test chemical and biological weapons. Nerve gases such as Sarin and CS gas were tested on volunteer servicemen. Servicemen were offered around £2 and three days leave as an incentive to take part in tests. Very few servicemen knew what they were volunteering for and some were even told it was research into the cure for the common cold. In 1953 it is alleged that serviceman Ronald Maddison died after taking part in a Sarin gas experiment. In 1962, one of Porton Down’s own scientists, Geoffrey Bacon died of the plague. Since the end of WWII, 20,000 people have taken part in experiments at Porton Down.” That Porton Down had a presence at Rendlesham Forest is, at the least, intriguing.

One of the weirdest aspects of the Rendlesham Forest case is the rumor that at the height of the events a local prison was due to be evacuated. A further rumor suggests that aerosol-based hallucinogens were released in the woods as a part of the experiments. It’s said that it was the possibility of those same hallucinogens reaching the prison that provoked significant worry. As history has shown, the prison (called HM Hollesley Bay) was not evacuated. That such plans were almost put in place, however, adds yet another drug-based aspect to the overall story. People in Hazmat outfits suddenly appearing on the scene, adds even more intrigue to the story. As I said at the start of this article, there are few UFO cases that have such ties to the domain of drugs. The Rendlesham Forest affair, however, is significantly different. Drugs appear all over the place in the case. Why might that be? The answer is simple: the case was not a UFO event. It was an experiment; a highly-classified one. And it played with minds to a dangerous degree.

That’s a question I’m often asked. And, it’s a question that, today, I’ll try and answer. There’s no doubt that something very unusual happened outside of Roswell, New Mexico in the summer of 1947. The big question is: what was it that came down? What we know for sure is that when a large amount of unusual debris was found on the Foster Ranch, Lincoln County, New Mexico in early July 1947, it provoked a great deal of interest and concern – at least, briefly. It’s a fact that the military did announce they had recovered a “flying disc.” That soon changed. It was – the media and the public were told – nothing but a weather-balloon that had come down. It was a big mistake. That remained the U.S. government’s position for decades. Things changed in 1994. That was when the Air Force stated – contrary to what was said way back in 1947 – that what plummeted to the ground was really a huge “Mogul” balloon array – which were designed to monitor for early Soviet atomic bomb tests. Also, the Air Force said because Mogul balloons didn’t have crews, there was no way that bodies could have been found on the ranch. In 1997, though, the Air Force changed its position and said that yes, there were bodies, after all. They were, however, not dead aliens, but crash-test dummies used in high-altitude parachute experiments. That’s quite a change of stories! To this day, and for the Air Force, the dummies/Mogul explanations remain firmly intact. Now, let’s get to the heart of this article: how can we get the proof for what happened?

The fact is this: there is zero evidence for any of the theories. And when I say that I mean hard, undeniable evidence. For example, the Air Force openly admits that its conclusion – concerning what came down on the ranch was a Mogul array – was just a theory. Granted, the Air Force is pretty sure that Mogul is the answer, but it’s still a theory and nothing else. Indeed, there’s not even a single sheet of official Air Force paper that confirms a Mogul balloon came down on the ranch on that famous day. Similarly, not even one document has ever been uncovered that shows crash-test dummies came down on the ranch. Again, it’s just a theory. Of course, there’s no evidence for the extraterrestrial scenario either. Yes, there are old-timers who swore they saw strange bodies at the site of the incident. Others, such as Philip Corso, claimed that in the wake of the crash, the U.S. secretly began to reverse-engineer the alien technology. I should stress there’s no evidence to back-up what Corso said, either. And no-one has ever presented photos of the mangled bodies at the crash-site. This brings us to another angle, one that many may not have thought of. It’s an angle that might depress some of you. I think, however, it could be the answer to why we have a 100 percent lack of hard proof concerning the legendary incident.

If aliens did crash not too far from Roswell, there’s no doubt that truly massive amounts of documentation and photos would have been created. And, it would surely still exist to this very day. Yet, not even a single, solitary page – a definitive smoking-gun – has even surfaced over the last seventy-three years. Not one. Maybe that’s because the paperwork no longer exists. This brings us to my two books on what happened in 1947 – The Roswell UFO Conspiracy and Body Snatchers in the Desert. Collectively, they tell a dark and disturbing story of top secret balloon-based programs using human guinea-pigs in high-altitude flights in the skies of New Mexico. Operation Paperclip, Japanese and German scientists, and controversial flights involving prisoners and handicapped people are just the start of the grim story. One of the issues that most of my sources stressed to me was that in the wake of the experiments in July 1947 the documentation – as in all of it – was destroyed. The reason? Because of the highly controversial nature of the tests, some of which may have crossed over into areas of an illegal nature. Taking into consideration the fact that the tests were complete failures –  and there was that issue of Nazis being involved, too – a hasty decision was made to bury everything. And by “bury” it, I mean everything was destroyed. All that was left by August 1947 was a bunch of memories. And, as time passed by, those memories became less and less. To the point where, today, just about everyone who was there is gone.

Basically, if I’m right, and if my sources were speaking truthfully (I believe they were), then the reason why we cannot find the proof for Roswell is simple: there really is no evidence. It’s gone. All of it. It was burned, shredded (take your pick) when someone made the hasty decision to make sure no one would ever be able to prove the terrible truth of what really happened. If Roswell did involve aliens, then the documentation would definitely have been preserved. But, if we’re looking at failed, top secret experiments of distinctly dubious natures, then it’s easy to see why everything could have been destroyed only a month after the events occurred. The stark reality of the situation might be this: we’re too late. The only thing left today, after seventy-three years, could be a big nothing. And there’s no way to bring back nothing.

Over the last few days, here at Mysterious Universe, I have written several articles on FBI files concerning Flying Saucers, UFO-connected people, and paranormal phenomena that the FBI has declassified under the terms of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). They are files that the Bureau has placed on its website, The Vault. Today, however, I’m going to share with you some of the UFO/paranormal-related files that have been declassified by the FBI, but that have not yet been placed online at the The Vault. You can still obtain those files, of course: it just means to get those papers that have not yet been uploaded, you will have to file a FOIA request. So, with that said, let’s take a look at some of the declassified files that, presently, you can’t see at The Vault. One of them is the file on George Hunt Williamson – he was one of the early UFO Contactees of the 1950s and who died in 1986. The Williamson file runs to around 50 to 60 pages. I say “around” because a few pages of material on Williamson are also contained in another file: that of George Adamski, the most famous (or, more correctly, infamous) Contactee of all. And Williamson pops up, too, in the Truman Bethurum file. So, the precise number of pages on Williamson is somewhat hazy. With that said, let’s take a look at the content of the Williamson file.

Certainly, the most interesting aspect of the FBI file on George Hunt Williamson is that which concerns smuggling. It was in 1962 that the FBI heard rumors that Williamson was secretly transporting ancient artifacts across the border from Mexico into the United States. For a while the FBI deeply pondered on whether or not they should get further involved in the pursuit of a potential crime that had occurred outside of its jurisdiction and in another country – Mexico – but finally dropped the matter; rather fortunately, it must be said, for Williamson. There is one particularly curious aspect of this particular affair: a number of the relevant documents on this alleged smuggling caper are heavily censored and under category B1 of the Freedom of Information Act. Intriguingly, B1 covers nothing less than matters that may have a potential effect on U.S. national security.

Now, let’s take a look at Wilhelm Reich. As far back as the 1930s, Reich had researched what he ultimately came to call Orgone – or Orgone energy. In 2008, it was stated by wilhelmreichtrust.org that: “About eight years ago, Reich’s FBI file – comprising approximately 800 pages – became available online at the FBI website, in a section of the website dedicated to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Some time during 2007, a number of people reported to us that Reich’s file had been removed from that website.” There was, however, no conspiracy or cover-up involved  at all. The FBI explained: “Wilhelm Reich’s file was intentionally taken off the Electronic Reading Room. Last year, RMD [Records Management Division] worked closely with the FBI’s Historian to identify files which were either historically valuable or were popular files, that is more than 3-4 requests in the past 3 years. The file in question didn’t make the list, so they removed it from the website.”

Moving on, there’s the matter of a woman named Mary Hardy Reeser. As Wonders and Marvels states: “During the summer of 1951, the St. Petersburg (Florida) Police Department needed help. On July 2, 67-year-old woman named Mary Hardy Reeser had burned to death in her apartment, and the police did not know how or why. A fire of unknown origin had reduced her body to fine ashes — except for her skull (“shrunken to the size of a teacup”), a small section of backbone, and her left foot, which still wore a shoe.” Rumors quuckly began to circulate that Reeser was a victim of nothing less than Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC). The FBI has a sizeable file on Reeser and the SHC claims. In fact, it runs to 115 pages. It’s not online at The Vault, though. It can be found, however, at John Greenewald, Jr.’s website, The Black Vault at this link.

The list goes on in relation to the papers that aren’t yet at The Vault: Guy Ballard has an FBI file that runs to a whopping 768 pages. That is not a surprise, as he was a very controversial figure who claimed to have met with none other than the “Ascended Master Count St. Germain.” As for Heaven’s Gate, no less than 382-pages of Bureau-based material are available via the Freedom of Information Act. George Adamski’s file is close to 300-pages-long. Hopefully, the FBI will expand the “Unexplained Phenomenon” section of the The Vault  and create the ultimate online source for all of the now-declassified FBI files on matters of the mysterious and paranormal kind.
