Why the Hunt for Extraterrestrial Life is Important?
On Wednesday, something remarkable happened at Capitol Hill. In a special hearing, lawmakers of the House Science Committee discussed the search for extraterrestrial life with three experts for 2 hours. The question and answer session focused around efforts to find everything from alien microbes under rocks on Mars to full-blown seti efforts to seek out transmitting extraterrestrial intelligence.
Naturally, some of the questioning was naive and sometimes needlessly lighthearted. In response to the Republican-led House panel, a Democratic opposition group even seized the opportunity to mock the occasion. The hearing was significant; maybe not to the immediate day-to-day running of a nation or the lawmakers who saw it as an entertaining sideshow, but the three scientists invited to talk were dead serious about the opportunities and implications such a high-profile hearing can bring.
“In our Milky Way galaxy there are 100 billion stars and we now believe, in our universe, we have 100 billion galaxies,” said Sara Seager, Professor of Physics and of Planetary Science at M.I.T., at the hearing titled Astrobiology: The Search for Biosignatures in Our Solar System and Beyond. “So if you just do the math, the chances that there’s a planet like Earth out there with life on it is very high.”
Seager was joined by Mary Voytek, Senior Scientist for Astrobiology in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters, and Steven J. Dick, Baruch S. Blumberg Chair of Astrobiology, Library of Congress. All discussed their motivations for studying astrobiology and how it inspires youngsters to pursue a career in science. They even outlined the key risks to the future of our species, identifying overpopulation, asteroid impacts and energy shortages as the key factors.
NASA is currently looking for biosignatures that could be indicative of the spawning of basic forms of life beyond Earth. The most high-profile current mission, the Curiosity rover, is not directly looking for life however, it’s seeking out the habitable potential of Mars. Directly hunting down alien biology isn’t the purpose of the Mars Program, so the U.S. space agency has directed its astrobiology mission toward looking for evidence of past and present habitability of the Red Planet.
But other projects are under way, not to seek out how habitable Martian rocks are (or were), but to look out for tell tail narrow-band radio signals, for example, that could only be transmitted by an intelligent civilization. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), however, is not a government-funded effort. This wasn’t always the case; seti used to be a NASA-headed project, a point underscored by Dick’s testimony.
“Almost exactly twenty years ago, in the same session that saw the demise of the Superconducting Super Collider, the 103rd Congress terminated the NASASearch for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program,” he said. Now, the alien hunting component of seti Institute is a privately-funded project, but its facilities are used extensively by other government funded projects . Dick went on to request that NASA funding be reallocated to the endeavor — the search for alien life, after all, inspires the public and should be considered — but in this time of austerity and shrinking government budgets, that’s probably not going to happen.
Of course, the slightest mention of “alien life” inspires visions marauding aliens hellbent on probing humans, a popular Hollywood storyline that Seager was keen to dampen.
“We’re not looking for UFOs or little green people, what we’re looking for are planets like Earth that orbit stars other than the sun,” Seager told the Washington Post shortly after the meeting.
As if to underline the popular viewpoint whenever “extraterrestrial” is mentioned, during the hearing Rep. Ralph Hall (R-Texas) asked the experts: “Do you think there’s life out there? (laughter) And are they studying us and what do they think of New York City?” The question was followed by more laughter.
At best, the laughter is due to ignorance of the efforts that are under way to discover our place in the universe. At worst, it’s a middle finger at science from the highest echelons of the U.S. government. Or perhaps Rep. Hall is just a funny guy. Regardless, the attitudes by government officials toward one of the noblest scientific endeavors humanity has ever undertaken is saddening — though not unexpected.
Even more frustrating was the response of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee who issued a news release mocking House meeting.
“No wonder the American people think this Republican Congress is from another planet — they’re more interested in life in space than Americans’ lives,” said the DCCC’s Emily Bittner. “Saying this Republican Congress has misplaced priorities is an understatement of galactic proportions.” (Emphasis added.)
And there it is: Discussing the search for extraterrestrial life is a waste of time considering all the other far more pressing concerns a government should be focusing on. In the rush to score political points, the DCCC neglected to consider the scientific, philosophical and historic implications of our desire to understand the nature of life itself and whether life is possible somewhere else in the Universe. That’s not to say that the Republican-dominated committee has a better grasp of this, but this is just one example of the partisan one-upmanship that plagues governments, stymieing some of the most fundamental of scientific pursuits. There will always be more immediate problems for governments to focus on, but that doesn’t mean governments can’t spend a tiny amount of time and resources on inspirational pursuits.
Space science enriches civilization in ways in which may not fully comprehend. The technological spinoffs, for example, are a tangible reminder that advancing our scientific know-how can invigorate developments such as satellite technology, materials science, medical breakthroughs and the miniaturization of computing (to name just a few). On a wider scale, these advances invigorate education, skills, employment and the economy. These things are a direct consequence of our nature to explore and push the envelope.
Technology is one thing, but I would argue that even more than that, developing an understanding as to our place in the Universe is key to the survival of our species. And at the root of this knowledge is the appreciation that we may not be the only life in the Universe. Currently, there is absolutely zero direct evidence of life anywhere else in our galactic neighborhood, intelligent or otherwise. This is a fundamental problem, particularly if you are applying for taxpayer funds for the search for hypothetical extraterrestrial biology, but it has only been a few decades since we even thought to look. In a galaxy that is nearly as ancient as the 13.75 billion year old Universe, we are barely a blip on the biological radar, we stand little chance of finding alien life within the next political cycle.
While we fester, argue, live and die on this small life-giving globe, far grander mechanisms are at play. We occupy a tiny part of interstellar space, orbiting an “average” star that is embedded in an “average” galaxy in a not-so special part of the Universe. Despite the fact that the Copernican Principal seems to govern our existence, we are here, having evolved from a primordial soup of organic chemistry into what appears to be (at least from our perspective) an intelligent race that questions how we are even here and whether there are other civilizations out there asking the same things.
In this modern era, we are becoming less dependent on myth and religion to provide us with answers. Science has given us a skill set that can tackle some of the most complex questions we can think to ask. We build powerful particle colliders to peel back the very nature of matter; we are unraveling life’s genetic code in the hope of developing novel therapies to prolong and enrich life; we are developing a mastery of computing where machines have changed the way we communicate and live. But above all, we explore.
A component of our urge to explore is the search for life beyond Earth and if we find the answer, it will transform the way we view the Universe and it will transform how we view life itself.
So as I watched the House Science Committee ask disappointing questions to a trio of accomplished astrobiology experts and the political bullshit it inspired, I realized that as a whole, we are a myopic species that is more concerned with petty point scoring, closed off to the awesome opportunities that are out there for us to explore.
But there is hope. Humanity is at a crossroads in the urge to explore and the technology to help us do so. I just hope we take the opportunity and politics follows the scientists’ and, by extension, the public’s lead.
“One of the most appealing characteristics of astrobiology is that the discipline forces us to ask questions that put in perspective our place in the universe: What are life, consciousness, and intelligence in a universal context, and what are the metaphysical assumptions that underlie our understanding of these concepts? Is there a general theory of living systems, a universal biology as there is a universal physics? What are culture and civilization? What is our place in the 13.8 billion year unfolding of cosmic evolution? Some of these questions bearing on consciousness and intelligence are beyond the scope of the current NASA astrobiology program, but they are nevertheless an important part of the search for life in the universe.” — Steven J. Mysterious Unexplained Short Signals From Outside Our Galaxy Baffle Astronomers
These signals are very short and originate from outside of our galaxy, the Milky Way.
They are baffling astronomers and the nature of the objects remains unexplained.
Are the signals natural or artificial in origin? Is it possible an extraterrestrial civilization is sending them or are we witnessing an unknown astronomical phenomenon?
We have previously discussed the possibility raised by astrophysicists that some extraterrestrial civilizations could send us signals by manipulating starlight. This means that there could alien messages concealed in the stars.
Several years ago, we picked up a mysterious signal from outer space that has never been explained. The signal was heard on three different occasions and originated in a region of space between the constellations Pisces and Aries.
We can assume that advanced extraterrestrial civilizations can appreciate the benefits of transmitting into space, as a good means of establishing communication with other intelligent alien life-form.
Humans are eager to learn about other alien civilizations and one way to contact other alien cultures is through interstellar signals. However, we should ask ourselves if transmitting radio messages into space pose a risk to human civilization?
Space is filled with sound that we cannot easily identify. It is a very complex task to determine what is of natural or artificial origin.
In July, 2012, an international team using the CSIRO Parkes 64 metre radio telescope in Australia detected mysterious bursts of radio waves coming from billions of light years away.
The burst energetics indicate that they originate from an extreme astrophysical event involving relativistic objects such as neutron stars or black holes. “A single burst of radio emission of unknown origin was detected outside our Galaxy about six years ago but no one was certain what it was or even if it was real, so we have spent the last four yearssearching for more of these explosive, short-duration radio bursts,” said Dan Thornton at the University of Manchester.
This brings us to the astronomical phenomena known as “fast radio transients”, which are objects and events that emit radio waves on ultra-short timescales.
These objects could include flares coming from stars, collisions between black holes, lightning on other planets, and RRATs – Rotating RAdio Transients, pulsars that only fire up when they feel like it. More speculatively, some scientists believe extraterrestrial civilizations could be flashing fast radio beacons into space.
While searching for pulsars back in 2007, astronomer Duncan Lorimer accidentally came across something unexpected and unexplainable – a burst of radio waves appearing to come from outside our galaxy, lasting just 5 milliseconds but possessing as much energy as the sun releases in 30 days.
A pulsar is a rotating neutron star. Neutron stars are the collapsed remains of massive stars which have mass greater than 4 to 8 times that of our Sun. After these stars have finished burning their nuclear fuel, they undergo a supernova explosion.
Neutron stars are on average only about 30km in diameter, but they have hugely powerful surface magnetic fields, billions of times that of our Sun. Sometimes it can be very difficult to decide whether astronomers detected unusual pulsar or alien signals.
The so-called Lorimer bursts are very strange. The very short signals come from an unknown region of space. Scientists are convinced the signals are coming from well beyond the Milky Way.
“The awareness of these short signals has long existed,” said Andrew Siemion, who searches the time domain for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence at seti. “But it’s only the past decade or so that we’ve had the computational capacity to look for them.”
Scientists are speculating what these burst may be. Some think it is new kind of source. Other theorists suggest that it was a primordial black hole evaporating or a ‘spark’ from a superconducting cosmic string.
Could they be signals sent from an extraterrestrials civilization that is searching the galaxy for other intelligent species? Duncan Lorimer, professor of physics at West Virginia University is doubtful the bursts are artificial.
“I think that becomes unlikely now that there’s more than one of them. With one source, you could always think about it as some sort of single civilization. But now, you’re seeing them, essentially, at different parts of the sky. It’s very unlikely that different civilizations would be sending things in exactly the same way.
So I think it’s something natural in origin, and that – it’s really the time scale is the biggest clue to the size of the object, because it’s only a few milliseconds in size. The emitting region can only be a few light-milliseconds across. And so that points to some sort of compact, star like a black hole or a neutron star where, potentially, there’s large amounts of energy can be released,” Lorimer said.
The Lorimer bursts are difficult to study. “The radio telescopes that found them have very small fields of view, and the bursts themselves don’t last very long. And it’s becoming clear from these recent results that the bursts could be going off in – over the entire sky about once every 10 seconds,” Lorimer said.
Astronomers have yet another mystery to add to their list of fascinating phenomena. The mysterious radio bursts from deep space remain unexplained for the time being. “It’s quite a puzzle as to what’s producing these events so often, ” Lorimer said

An Astronomer and Two Students Witness UFOs at Syracuse University’s Holden Observatory
On the winter’s night of February 20, 1947, five months before the famous RoswellUFO incident, two classmates of Syracuse University along with an astronomer reportedly witnessed strange elliptical or circular objects crossing across the horizon, coveringthe stars as they passed at tremendous speed. The two classmates were walking around 10:15 PM on the school campus and noticing that the dome doors of Holden Observatory were not close.
Not only that the dome doors were left opened they also discovered that entrance door of the small building was also open as they passed it. Out of curiosity, the two classmates wandered into the ground floor and they noticed a 6 or 7-foot long refracting telescope that was suspended around 12 feet above the floor. It was used by a man who walked it back and forth rapidly in the length of the dome opening. When the astronomer noticed the two students as they climbed the platform, he was thanking God that the two were there. He invited them to take a look of his found to tell others that he was not crazy.
The man told the two students that he had been witnessing something not usual in the night sky. He then let the two to take a look what he’d been watching without giving them a clue. One of the two students grew in NEW YORK City so, he only had a chance to appreciate the beauty of the stars in the night sky on campus, especially using a telescope. He was in awe of the bright star field and then noticed a light passed his view in the dark sky. He then observed more after 20 or 30 seconds. He counted approximately twelve mysterious lights. After being puzzled of what he had seen, he then gave the telescope to his pal. After a few minutes, his pal looked as puzzled as him and the astronomer. The three men agreed that they had seen the same objects.
The three men were able to witness the details of these objects through the telescope. They all witnessed the same objects that appeared to have a greyish bottom, slightly lighter than the dark sky background. The objects had thin bright yellow orange trailing edge which appeared slightly rippling. All men noted that some of the objects appeared to be brighter than others. The astronomer assured the students that he had never seen anything like the mysterious objects.
After a couple of minutes, the students bid the astronomer a good night. That was the first and only time they met the astronomer. The two students have talked about the incident a number of times for many years.
The Hoia-Baciu Forest — called the “Bermuda Triangle of Romania” — is a very strange place, a true portal into other unworldly realms. Ghost Adventureswas in Romania to investigate ghosts, and the spooky tales of the forest was a natural place for the team to explore. What I found interesting was the variety of anomalous phenomena. From unexplained disappearances (one story: young girl disappears for five years, returns with no memory of where she'd been) to odd lights, sounds, a circle (not exactly a true circle, more circle-like) area in the middle of the forest where nothing grows, absolutely nothing, and yes, UFOs. UFOs! The team caught on tape an orange orb/light that are similar to so many reports of orange lights the world over. The word “UFO” was uttered by many in last night's program, from residents to witnesses to the team.
I'm intrigued by these cross-over types of cases, where ghost activity and UFO activity, if not connecting or intersecting in some ways, at least parallel one another.
DECEMBER 2000 …. BILAMBI HEIGHTS, GOLD COAST OF AUSTRALIA

I am would like to report to you a sighting of the craft that looks like the a V Arc. It had five really big lights underneath it and moved very slowly in the sky. I was then living in Bilambil Heights on the Gold Coast in Australia. My father was a pilot for all of my life and I have been around all types of aircraft that would normally carry patrons to and from set destinations. Dad flew in order. Chipmunks, Tigermoths, Dc-3, Dc-4, Orion, Boeing 727 series 100 and 200, Ac146 and the A320 as a check captain. I know aircraft. I had never seen anything like this in my life. I rang the Coolangatta airport to see if they had anything in the sky at that time that fit the description I gave them and they hung up on me. At the same time here in Australia there was a joint USA and Australian Armed forces joint exercises up in Cairns and I thought it may have been something from them that was checking out the local terrain. The front light flashed red then white, white for the remaining lights towards the back of the craft. It was not totally silent. It hummed, very slightly. I was sitting on my back balcony affording me a wonderful view of the under side of the craft. I watched it head down toward Mt Warning close to Murwillumbah in Northern New South Wales. I also called my father and he knew of nothing that fit the description as soon as I could not see the craft anymore. This was in 2000 around Christmas time here in Australia. “Light flooded the passenger compartment and I couldn’t see beyond the hood of the car. It was a dense, brilliant light, yellow in color with some violet hues. I thought I’d lost control of the car at the moment. I looked through the window and saw were nearly two meters over the asphalt surface. I suddenly thought we had jumped over a speed bump and braced myself on the steering wheel, waiting for the moment we’d hit the surface again,” Acevedo explained.
However, far from descending, the car seemed to keep rising into the air, out of control. “After a few seconds, I don’t know, maybe some 5 or 10, I reacted and realized that something completely abnormal was going on. I wanted to look out the window again, but all I could see was that dense light. I remember I started screaming ‘what’s going on?’ but Moya wasn’t answering. When I looked to my right, my companion wasn’t there, or at least I couldn’t see him. I couldn’t even see the dashboard. I could only see that dense light that looked liquid, I don’t know, sort of viscous,” Acevedo recalls.
Miguel Angel Moya, on the other hand, was paralyzed by fear, and explained: “Initially I also thought it was a speed bump, and was scared at the thought of the vehicle overturning, but when I noticed that the car appeared to float in the air and wasn’t coming down, I became even more frightened. It was a situation I couldn’t really understand. I looked at Carlos and I saw him completely stiff, clutching the steering wheel with his arms outstretched and staring forward. It seemed like he was screaming but I couldn’t hear anything. I could see everything as if through a yellow fog, as if I was distant, somewhere else. I think my first reaction was to try and flee from there, but when I tried to open the door it wouldn’t budge, as if welded shut. I noticed the temperature was rising, although it could have been the result of my state of fear. Suddenly the light covered everything and I couldn’t see a thing, not even my hands, nothing.”
The witnesses lost all notion of time. They felt a sudden jolt and noticed the vehicle was on the road again.
“I think a minute or two went by, I’m not really sure, and I felt a shudder, but I had the immediate impression that the car was on the road again. The yellow light appeared to dim, and I was gradually able to see my surroundings, the dashboard, the hood of the car. I looked through the window and saw the ground. We were on the shoulder on the opposite lane of the road, fully stopped. Suddenly the light vanished from the passenger compartment and saw it fading away into the west, like a cone of yellow light, but one that didn’t end in a tip, it was somewhat truncated. I don’t know. It might have measured some five meters at the base and two or three at the cusp, measuring some six or seven meters in height. The base lit the ground, ahtough you really couldn’t see what it was lighting, that is to say, you couldn’t see through the light. A few seconds later, the light…how can I explain it? …retracted itself or drew up like a curtain, from bottom to top, and all that remained in view was an oval, whitish-yellow light that kept heading west until it vanished in the distance,” said Acevedo.
Moya took a few seconds to recover from the impression produced by the abnormal situation. “Suddenly it was all over, and we were alone on the road. Carlos and I exchanged looks, but couldn’t say a word. I was numb. My hands were shaking and there was a pressure on my chest. Breathing was hard.”
Acevedo and Moya remained silent for a few minutes, unable to engage in any action or activity. Finally, Acevedo got out of the car to “make sure everything was in place”, as he said. A minute later he boarded the Citroen and headed north along Route 3 at full speed.
Fifteen minutes later, the Chilean drivers of Citroen No. 2 reached the town of Pedro Luro, a community located in the Province of Buenos Aires some 123 kilometers north of Carmen de Patagones. They stopped at a service station in order to ask for the location of the police barracks. When checking the dashboard, they ascertained two anomalous events: the odometer showed that they had covered 52 kilometers from the city of Viedma to Puerto Luro, when the actual distance between both places is 127 kilometers. Moreover, they had reached Pedro Luro at 05:10 hours, having departed the city limits of Carmen de Patagones at 02:50 approximately. Driving at an average speed of 100 kilometers an hour, it shouldn’t have taken more than 75 minutes to cover the distance between both points, but they had in fact taken 2 hours and 20 minutes.
There was a third inexplicable event: when they decided to fill up the main gas tank, they noticed their backup tank was completely empty, despite having been filled with 40 liters of fuel in the city fo Viedma. These unexplained events added to the witnesses’ confusion. In spite of their growing fear, they decided to tell their story to the police at Pedro Luro, heading to the respective barracks.
They spoke with Inspector Daniel Osimi, to whom they told the details of the incident they had experienced, asking for police custody to the city of Bahia Blanca.
The press covered the story, including magazines like Cuarta Dimension, whose Number 58 tells the story, comparing it to an event of similar characteristics in Brazil.
A Japanese airline crew is en route from Paris to Tokyo with a cargo load of Beaujolais wine. As Captain Terauchi and his crew are crossing Alaska, they encounter blindingly bright lights flying in their airspace. These lights illuminate the cockpit and seem to be keeping pace with the Boeing 747. Captain Terauchi then reports seeing two unidentified crafts, one the size of a 'mothership'. The UFO is tracked by both ground and airborne radar, though its origins remain unknown.
Part 2: CRASH COURSE: AUGUST 27, 1979 - Deputy Sheriff Val Johnson is on patrol near Stephen, Minnesota in the early morning hours when he sees a beam of light shining down on the road ahead. As he continues to drive, the beam of light engulfs his car. Johnson briefly loses consciousness and wakes up to discover that he had skidded off the road and he's suffering eye damage similar to welder's burns. Both his wristwatch and the car clock have stopped for exactly 14 minutes.
An anomalous image from Google Earth’s maps of the moon is catching some media attention this week. Some say it is nothing but over pixelized digital static, but others argue that you can’t find similar pixelization elsewhere in the moon images, and suggest it might even be an extraterrestrial spacecraft.
The discovery of the strange anomaly was posted to the YouTube account Wowforreeel on January 15, 2014. The description reads:
What IS that??? No idea how to title this one really so went with first thing that comes to mind. After going there on Google Moon and staring at this thing for quite a long time I can say yes, it is really there, not faked and I have no clue what it is. I found nothing else like it in any of the other craters. Not much to be said other than .. it’s there, take a look and tell us what you think it is.

Checking those coordinates on Google Moon, I found this. Tech and Gadget News contributor Reid Moore pointed out that the triangular shape in the image is “too symmetrical to be a random, topographical structure caused by even the minimal erosion typical of the lunar landscape.” He continues, “No other feature has ever been discovered which matches this shape on the Moon.”
Moore speculates, “The anomaly is so huge, it’s possible it is some sort of moon base used as a facility for storing and launching alien “UFO” spacecraft.” He also speculates that the object could be a secret base built by humans.
Thus far, the story has also been picked up by the Metro in the UK and the Huffington Post, although the later suggests another possibility. Computer programmer Ross Davidson told the Huffington Post:
Basically it’s similar to the thing you get in all those ‘UFO videos’ you see these days from people with digital cameras – when they use digital zoom too much, you get ‘artifacts’ as the missing data is recreated using an algorithm which create regular shapes simply because of the nature of digital.

He referenced the following alleged UFO image as an example. As for the triangular shape, Davidson says, “You can get similar things with still photos when you blow them up – the moon pic shows a ‘triangle’ because it’s digital – made up of pixels.”

In Andy Lloyd’s scenario, their planet, Nibiru, revolves around Nemesis, Solaris’ binary dark dwarfstar; this, from the perspective of Earth, is as far from Earth as Nibiru goes. Then Nibiru moves toward Earth. It crosses our orbit’s plane (between Jupiter and Mars) on a plane 30 degrees to ours. Alternately, in Neil Freer’s scenario, Nibiru and its accompanying Moons completes a large elliptical orbit into outer space (no Nemesis in his formulation), then comes back toward the crossing point between Jupiter and Mars. Both Lloyd’s and Freer’s scenarios seem plausible.
Sumerians lacked telescopes and couldn’t see Uranus’ and Neptune’s orbits the route maps show. Anunnaki-dictated maps prove they had astronomical info Sumerians, on their own, didn’t. The maps accurately detail the entire Earth from space, a perspective impossible for ancient Sumerians on their own. These maps add to the evidence the Aninnaki came from outer space.

The lines run straight and stretch and rich in nitrates, a probable component of Anunnaki rocket fuel. Von Daniken’s researchers found very powerful electromagnetic currents eight feet under the Nazca lines they studied.
Another drawing is a huge spider gylph depicts the constellation Orion, the extension the spider’s leg on the viewer’s right, locates the star Sirius.
The glyphs and the mandalas formed by the layout of Anunnaki structures may have been signs for off-worlder viewers.

This video is too crazy not to see. I am into the whole theory about a secret war against UFOs, even against other UFOs, so I had to check it out. It’s just such a crazy video you gotta watch it. I’m blown away alittle bit here. There is definately something happening here. There are UFOs and there are dozens of what look like explosions of some kind. The only military base of note in Ft. Worth is the Joint Reserve Naval Air Station just West of downtown Ft. Worth. By all means comment below after you watch the video and tell me if this is faked at all because its just too unbelievable. Scientist Rhawn Joseph has filed a lawsuit over what he alleges to be a conspiracy involving NASA, Mars and a mysterious rock. Joseph claims the space agency refused to investigate what he deemed to be alien life on Mars, calling the conclusions reached by NASA as “little more than magical thinking.”
Joseph filed the lawsuit in the United States District Court, Northern District of California, reports Popular Science. Joseph, working as an astrobiologist, claims NASA has failed to investigate evidence of life on Mars. The astrobiologist discusses his working, published in the Journal of Cosmology, that concludes the “jelly doughnut” rock that suddenly appeared in front of the Opportunity rover is a “ a fully grown bowl-shaped organism resembling Apothecia.”
The abstract reads, “What appears to be spore-producing “paraphyses” can be observed on the structure, as is apparent upon magnification and which is typical of Apothecia. Apothecia are composite organisms, a mixture of fungus and cyanobacteria.” Joseph refutes NASA’s claims that the object is either a rock or piece of debris from a nearby impact.
Joseph is focusing on the “jelly doughnut” rock that was discussed during a public event for Opportunity’s 10th anniversary. The Mars rover first photographed the outcrop on Sol 3528 and again 12 days later, Sol 3540. Despite not traveling over the area, Opportunity discovered a mysterious rock, dubbed “Pinnacle Island.”
Steve Squyres, lead scientist for the NASA Mars Exploration Rover mission, said at the time, “It just plain appeared at that spot and we haven’t driven over that spot.” During their initial analysis of the rock, the “jelly” part has a high concentration of magnesium, sulfur and manganese than other Martian rocks. For now, the team has yet to reach a definitive conclusion as to how the rock got there, they believe it may have been knocked over by Opportunity’s wheel as it was making a turn, but do they determine it is a rock and not a sign of Martian life.
While life on Mars would be a significant discovery, Joseph says NASA has refused to actually investigate the rock with all photographic evidence taken by Opportunity being of “low resolution” and “slightly out of focus.” Joseph says he discovered the evidence of a Martian organism after magnifying the images.
After comparing structural examples of apothecia, or “shield lichen,” with what was found on Mars, including the “paraphyses,” the “spore producing organs, he concludes the organism grew over the twelve days that Opportunity photographed the rock outcrop. “Typically, if deprived of moisture, Apothecia will quickly dry and dehydrate and then become quite brittle–exactly as depicted in the photos of the Martian ‘mystery” structure,’” states Joseph.
Despite this evidence, NASA has yet to acknowledge the Mars mystery rock is in fact evidence of life. Joseph’s lawsuit laws out his claims as well as detailing the ways he tried to contact NASA officials to research the rock. Joseph is not seeking damages but wants NASA to “take 100 high resolution close-up in-focus photos of the specimen identified in Sol 3540, at various angles, from all sides, and from above down into the “bowl” of the specimen, and under appropriate lighting conditions which minimize glare. Take a minimum of 24 microscopic in-focus images of the exterior, lip, walls, and interior of the specimen under appropriate lighting conditions. NASA, and the rover team, must make public and supply Petitioner with all high resolution photos and images of that specimen.”
As io9 points out, Joseph does not have the best reputation within the scientific community. The Journal of Cosmology tends to have some dubious articles and would not be considered as reputable as journals such as Nature or Science. The journal previously hosted a dubious “proof of alien life” article last year and has a history of publishing research that has been deemed “Way, way, way ridiculously oh-holy-wow-how-could-anyone-publish-this wrong.”

A UFO has been caught on camera – by a robot on MARS.
The bizarre celestial object, which looks like a spacecraft complete with vapour trail, was photographed by an unmanned Nasa rover at work on the surface of the Red Planet.
The weird shape can be seen in a video uploaded to YouTube by Ufologist Streetcap1 under the heading Mars ufo?
Some internet users offered potential explanations for the UFO.
Nix Nightbird commented: “It’s something on the lens of the rover camera.
“Ice, dust, whatever.”
Brad Parker said: “That’s obviously just a weather balloon.”
On January 23, 2014, huge orbs of light appeared in the sky above Naha, the capital city of Okinawa Island, which is part of Japan. Naha has a population of over 300,000.
The lights hovered in the same location without descending for 15-20 minutes. They made their signature triangle formations before moving into almost a straight line. Once in the line, they proceeded to put on a very impressive light display!
Is this their way of saying “hi” to us? Why else would they appear over heavily populated areas and put on such shows? They could easily observe us without us seeing them. And yet they continue to appear above major cities as bright orbs of light, often in the triangle formation.

As we have often stated and written about the value of campaigns that serve not only to make people aware of a concept or an idea, they also allow us to find what we least expected, as occurred here: a document!
Researcher Silvia Pérez Simondini, CEFORA’s press officer, has among her functions contacting people who approach her with questions or any other information. In this manner, documentation was found that enables us to delve into the files of the Buenos Aires Provincial Police Department, containing hundreds of UFO reports.
Since the year 2012, Silvia has been in contact with Daniel Lecomte, interested in the UFO phenomenon and a resident of Buenos Aires province, who advised the researcher that he has in his possession a series of police files given to him by a retired officer.
Incredible though it may sound, this documentation was going to be discarded (literally thrown to the trash), but given that the officer was aware of Daniel’s interest in the subject, decided to save them and pass them along.
The documents, which include all manner of police reports from Southern Buenos Aires Province, contained within them a jewel, as far as our research is concerned, into the case of the Vuelta de America del Sur Rally on September 23, 1978. Unknowingly, the recipient of the file kept the information as it was given to him, unread. It was only recently that the protagonist decided to open the folder, coming across the famous case after a conversation with Silvia, who wanted to know what cases were contained within.
For those of you who do not remember or have never heard of the case, here is a chronicle, well documented, of perhaps one of the best known cases of the 1970s, involving two Chilean race car drivers during the first Rally de la Vuelta de America del Sur. The Case:
On 17 August 1978, Carlos Acevedo and Hugo Prambs departed the city of Buenos Aires aboard a Citroen GS 1220 as part of the first leg of the Rally de America del Sur, organized by the Argentinean Automobile Club and the Banco de Intercambio Regional.
The competition was truly exhausting for men and machines alike: a marathon lasting a little over a month, during which they had to reach Caracas (Venezuela) from Buenos Aires, returning along the Pacific coastline of South America.
The crew of Citroen Number 102 faced countless problems, particularly in the last segments of the Rally, which caused them to realize they might have to quit the race altogether. However, thanks to Acevedo’s determination and the assistance of over racers, they were able to “hook up” with the race again after deserting it, with a view to reaching their goal.
On September 16, Hugo Prambs quit the race due to personal reasons, and was replaced by Miguel Angel Moya. In the early hours of 23 September, Acevedo and Moya were covering the last 1000 kilometers of the Rally. At approximately 2:00 a.m. they stopped at the ACA service station in Viedma (Rio Negro Province) where they took on fuel (filling up their standard 50 liter tank plus a 40-liter backup tank), drank coffee and spoke to other racers for a few minutes. A 02:30 hours, Citroen No.102 was enroute again to Bahía Blanca, after crossing the Rio Negro and crossing the town of Carmen de Patagones.
At around 03:00 hours, having left behind the intersection of Route 3 with the rural road leading to Cardenal Cagliero, near Salitral del Agarrobo and Salina de Pedro, some 30 kilometers north of Carmend de Patagones (approximate location 40* 29' North, 62* 49' West).
Carlos Acevedo was at the wheels of the Citroen when he suddenly saw a bright light reflected in his rear view mirror. It was a dense, yellowish light. At first it looked like only a dot in the mirror. However, its size increased as he watched.
Acevedo and Moya were driving at around 100 kilometers an hour at the moment. In spite of this, the light was closing in swiftly, causing Acevedo to believe that it was the headlights of one of the heavier vehicles (Citroen 2400s or a Mercedes Benz), causing him to slow down and pull over to the right edge of the asphalt in order to allow another Rally competitor to pass him by.
The light was already filling the rear view mirror and kept closing in. Suddenly, the passenger compartment in Acevedo and Moya’s Citroen became filled with light.
