Dat de Aarde draait, vinden we vanzelfsprekend. Maar wat zou er gebeuren als onze planeet daar op een dag mee zou stoppen? Michael Stevens, oprichter van het wetenschappelijke YouTubekanaal Vsauce, legt het uit in een video.

Het antwoord is simpel: we zouden allemaal een gruwelijke dood sterven. Als de Aarde stopt met draaien, wat overigens erg onwaarschijnlijk is, blijft alles rondom ons in beweging. Iedereen die zich niet aan een van de polen bevindt, wordt dus een "supersonisch projectiel met de vernietigende kracht van een supersnelle kogel", aldus Stevens.

Moest iemand dat op magische wijze overleven, dan is er nog de wind. Die zou razen met de kracht van een atoombom, overal branden veroorzaken en alles op zijn pad vernietigen. De zeeën zouden stijgen en de Aarde verdrinken, maar dat zou niemand nog meemaken.

Enige hoop is er voor passagiers in een vliegtuig of de bemanning van het International Space Station. Al zouden die geen Aarde meer hebben om naar terug te keren.

Even today it shows that they are guiding modern Muslim leaders like Elijah Muhammad and Louis Farrakhan, both of whom swear that they were taken up to the mother ship and say they are now completely guided by them. Do you think these famous Muslims are lying? I know they are telling the truth. The Repto Sapiens always “guide” key religious, military, and political leaders of all religions and nations to bring about war to generate dead bodies for the reptilians to harvest. There are old Arabian legends that tell of the bodies of dead warriors being floated up into the sky at night after big battles. There are Norse legends that say that too. Hitler said that when he was a soldier in World War 1 he was abducted by two tall reptilian figures who took him to an underground base. He said they scared him. Follow the meat. They do this about every 50 years. We are all being harvested, people of every race and religion. We must stop slaughtering each other for them. Where are the UFOs?

If there is one thing that can be said, for sure, about the UFO issue in the second decade of the 21st Century, it’s that the subject is not what it once was. No, I’m not talking about the people in the field. As they have always done, they continue to research, investigate, strut around flaunting their egos like pompous peacocks, and engage in petty and pointless arguments that usually amount to damn-all. Rather, I’m talking about the phenomenon of UFOs.

It really only takes even the most cursory of all glances into the ufological past (and by that I mean since 1947, the year in which the flying saucer first caught the attention of the world), to see that matters have changed noticeably in the last 10 to 15 years.

Where are the classic landing cases of the Maurice Masse type? Gone. Where are the long-haired “Space Brothers” of the California desert? F****d off home, that’s where. How about all those radar-visual cases involving pilots of the 1940s and 1950s? Taken a hike, that’s what. Even today’s reports of abductions don’t come anywhere near the figures of the 1980s and early 1990s.

Yes, of course, people still see UFOs today, and yes we occasionally get a case that borders upon being a classic. But, for the most part, things have changed drastically. It boils down to this: whether the entities behind the phenomenon are extraterrestrials, John Keel’s ultraterrestrials, Mac Tonnies’ cryptoterrestrials, time-travelers, demons, or something beyond our ability to properly understand, one thing seems pretty certain: their actions have most assuredly been scaled down across the last decade or so.

The late UFO researcher Karl Pflock was fond of stating that he fully believed there was a genuine UFO phenomenon in our midst. He also believed, however, that it arrived in the mid-to-late 1940s and vanished back to wherever it surfaced from in the early-to-mid 1970s. Personally, I don’t think it’s so cut and dried as that. But, I do think he had a point.

Indeed, one only has to pick up the books of such long-gone characters of Ufology as J. Allen Hynek, Edward Ruppelt, Jim and Coral Lorenzen, Leonard Stringfield, and Morris Jessup to see that the skies were packed with UFOs in decades equally long-gone. Today, they are far less than packed.

So, where am I going with all this? Well, here’s where: if the UFO phenomenon continues to shrink – in terms of both quality cases and presence – where does that leave the ufologists? Out on a limb? Screwed? Left to do little more than re-read those now old, worn books that they bought when UFOs really were saucer-shaped? Or destined to do zero, aside from raging at one another?

Some might say “Yes!” to all of the above. Personally, I think those same scenarios will most definitely play growing roles in the future of Ufology. I also think, however, that there may be an additional development. It may well be the case that the UFO research community will be forced to spend more and more time digging into older cases – as in decades-old cases – to try and fathom the truth about the UFO mystery.

Certainly, to an extent, we are already seeing that. Beyond any shadow of doubt, the one UFO case that dominates Ufology more than any other is Roswell. And it’s a case that is fast-approaching its 70th anniversary. That alone should tell all of us something about which era – past or present – is most relevant to the field of today. Just a week or so ago, a story surfaced concerning allegations that long-buried Roswell evidence has finally been uncovered. Well, such was the controversy that the revelation kicked-off, it reached near-stratospheric proportions!

What this tells us is that many ufologists are already recognizing and realizing that if they are to get the answers to the UFO puzzle that they seek, it’s sure as hell not going to be by addressing today’s reports of “lights in the sky” and so on. The answers are to be found in history, in the past. It may well be that, 10 years from now, the primary role of the UFO seeker will not be to investigate current cases as such, but to take on the role of historian. And that would not be a bad thing.

Let’s face it: excellent, in-depth work of a historical nature has been undertaken to ensure that we know (to the extent that we can) the facts surrounding such matters as the rise and fall of the Roman Empire, the American Civil War, the Black Death pandemic of the 1300s, the period in which the dinosaurs walked the Earth, and…well… you get the picture. All of that first-class research has been done by people who were not even alive when the events occurred. Ufology could do the same.

Now, it may very possibly be the case that things will come full circle and, in a year from now, the skies will be just like they were in the summer of 1952: that’s to say packed with saucers. But, equally, that may not be the case. Those days may be gone – forever. Should the latter scenario prove to be the correct one, then ufologists should brace themselves for a radical shake-up in terms of what passes for research.

Living in the past for the sake of nostalgia is a pointless and pathetic thing to do. But digging ever deeper into the past for the truth behind the UFO mystery may not be just a worthwhile thing to do. In a few years from now, if current trends persist, it may be the only way we’ll ever get close to lifting the veil.

A police officer has claimed he saw a UFO moving at supersonic speed while driving off-duty near Birmingham airport.

The unnamed officer, an acting sergeant with West Midlands police, saw a ‘light with a bluish tinge’ that ‘pulsed rhythmically’ and zoomed off.

A colleague called air traffic control, but workers there said they had seen nothing.

The officer later told his story to a UFO fan who posted it on the Haunted Skies website.

‘I noticed a light in the sky which was pulsing rhythmically. It was very bright and had a bluish tinge to it,’ t

hewebsite reported the officer as saying.

‘I thought at first that it was a plane. Then I realised, as it was only a single light, this was not likely to be the case.

‘Besides, I had never seen an aircraft in that part of the sky.’

West Midlands police said the force was aware of the incident but that ‘the officer had been off-duty on the night in question and he did not report anything officially to the control room’.

UFO expert Nick Pope, who previously investigated alleged alien sightings for the Ministry of Defence, told Birmingham’s Sunday Mercury: ‘This could be the real thing – a UFO in our airspace and military aircraft scrambled to intercept.’

Video: Spectacular UFO Footage From NASA STS-48 Discovery Space Shuttle Released

When it comes to some of the most unexplained footage of unidentified flying objects, there has been spectacular UFO film footage released from the NASA STS 48 Discovery Space Shuttle Flight. They filmed this original UFO footage between September 12 and 18, 1991. The top secret NASA film shows a UFO following after the space shuttle while it was in orbit during one of its mission.

NASA continues to refuse comment on the video even though it has come straight from one of the Discovery missions and it is most definitely at the top of the unexplained list. This footage has not been photoshopped, altered in any way, is very well documented, and has been the subject of an ongoing arduous scientific examination by multiple astronomers, scientists and space institutions all over the world.

The footage is available on YouTube and it is also below for anyone who wants to view it. The video appears to show at least a dozen objects moving around in an unusual manner. Along with that, what seems to be the most amazing part is when one entity is near the horizon and some sort of flashing occurs. It is then followed by yet another object that travels extremely fast across the field of view. After this, the first body takes off into space.

Arizona witness frightened as rectangle UFO moves over home

An Arizona witness near Show Low became frightened while watching a rectangular-shaped UFO “about 30 feet across” with white pulsating lights that moved low over his home about 7:30 p.m. on June 13, 2014, according to testimony in Case 57093 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside feeding farm animals near the front of his home when he first heard the sound of a small engine that seemed to be coming from the back of the house. He moved to that area and immediately became frightened when he spotted the low flying object.

“It was flying so low and was so strange looking,” the witness stated. “It looked like a large rectangle about 30 feet across and I’m not sure – maybe four or five feet wide.”

The witness described the lighting on the craft.

“It had two huge white, pulsating lights about the size of the old car headlights – and they were round. The lights were centered about one third up from the ends of the rectangle.”

The witness did move inside briefly to get a camera, but said that the lighting was not right to photograph the object.

“The strange thing was that the back of the UFO also had the same huge white, pulsating lights on the back side of it as it was flying away. Well I am very used to seeing planes of all types out here in the mountains. An airport is 15 miles from here and it wasn’t an airplane. It wasn’t a passenger anything. I am 68 years old and have seen a lot of flying machines and pictures and videos of drones, but this was one of those.”

The witness remained frightened during the event.

“I was so scared because it was flying so low and was unfamiliar. It just was on a flight path over my house coming from Snowflake, AZ, across Concho, and on the way to Show Low. I started shaking and really didn’t know what to do. I was afraid it would land and I was home alone at the time.”

The witness again attempted to get a photograph of the object and could not. He continued to study the object.

“The lights, all four of them, two in front and the two in back, were pulsating rather than the rapid flashing plane’s lights flash, and the four lights were really bright.”

The witness called a friend in Show Low who also observed the object, but also could not get a photograph of it.

Show Low is a city in Navajo County, AZ, population 10,724. Arizona MUFON is investigating.  Arizona has a current UFO Alert Rating of 3 with a high number of recent reports nationally. Arizona had 27 UFO reports in May 2014 – the 5th highest reporting state – while California had 102 reports as the highest reporting state. The above quotes were edited for clarity. The UFO Alert Rating System is based on five levels – 1 through 5 – where states with 150 or more reports for the month are rated an Alert 1; states with 100 or more reports are rated an Alert 2; 25 reports or more for the month are rated an Alert 3; 13 or more reports are rated an Alert 4; and those states with less than 13 reports for the month are an Alert 5.

Searching For 3 Hours of Lost Time

Monroe, NC Man Abducted / Meets With Occupant of Craft

A two-hour session with Winston-Salem psychologist Richard Pinneau early this past summer unlocked a mystery that had troubled Pat Eudy for more than two years.

Eudy had been unable to account for approximately three hours of a night in March 1979. He thought he might have had a close encounter of the third kind – a face-to-face meeting, Inside a UFO, with a being not from this planet.

But Eudy, 46, a salesman for Callaway Cadillac-Oldsmobile Inc. In Monroe, wasn’t sure. “I just couldn’t get it off of my mind,” he gaid. “It just kept coming back. I wanted to make sure…’

More than two years passed before Eudy wrote to a civilian UFO research center in Ohio, which referred Wadesboro UFO investigator Henry Morton to him. Morton interviewed Eudy and suggested he speak with Pinneau, who allowed Eudy to become relaxed and recall the rest of his memories of that night.

HERE’S WHAT Eudy remembered before and after the three-hour gap in his recollections:

After visiting a friend in Locust, with whom he drank two beers, Eudy headed for the home he shares with his mother, Gay Eudy, on U.S. 601 South.

“I left at 3 a.m. and started down that back road heading toward the Rocky River steel bridge,” he said. “I’ve always looked at the stars and I saw a bright light in the sky..,”

Eudy’s memory went blank at this point. The next thing he remembered, without Pinneau’s aid, was driving south on Morgan Mill Road, at G. B. Helms’ store, en route home.

He didn’t recall how he’d traveled from the bridge, which connects Sikes Mill Road with Stanly County, to the store, a distance of about eight miles. Eudy arrived home about 6:20 a.m. “My eyes were just burning like anything,” he said. “My skin had a sensation of stinging and itching.”

The pain went away after several days. Eudy said he didn’t seek medical aid, but treated his fingers and ankles with rubbing alcohol and lotion. He also put drops in his eyes to ease the discomfort.

His session with Pinneau has allowed Eudy to reconstruct some of what happened to him early that morning.

“The only thing I remember is being on board (a UFO) and seeing an astronaut in a suit,” Eudy said. The being stood about 5 feet tall, and had two arms and two legs. Eudy said the being’s face was covered by a dark-colored visor. “The person never spoke a word,” he said.

He remembers he was first in a well-lit room. Both the room and the being’s suit were a light, metallic color, Eudy said. He believes the craft was oval-shaped.

“The inside was designed like a cockpit of a plane,” he said. “I wanted to know how it operated.” Eudy now remembers asking a lot of questions about how the craft worked.

After a few minutes in the first room, Eudy was taken into a second room, which was darker than the first. “I was scared,” he said. “I was put in a chair like a doctor’s chair and strapped down. I think (he was) running tests on me.”

Pain in his fingers afterward made Eudy speculate the being took a blood sample from him for analysis.

In retrospect, Eudy believes the craft was propelled by some form of magnetism, and that it was able to pick up his car and move it. He said he still doesn’t remember crossing the bridge over the Rocky River or entering or leaving the UFO.

He feels the relaxation process he underwent was a beneficial experience. “It brought back things I thought were true, and it eased my mind because I knew that I wasn’t just dreaming up stuff.” Eudy hasn’t told many people about the experience or about his session with Pinneau.

Part of the reason for his relative silence has been his job as a salesman. “You don’t want to put youself in a position where people are skeptical of you,” he said.

EUDY SAID he Initially believed he should not become involved in the debate as to whether UFOs exist. Although he believed in them before that night, he acknowledged that many people still don’t believe in them.

“Some people just don’t believe they’re other (beings) out there,” he said.

But a concern that people who have seen UFOs might be inhibited from speaking up led Eudy to change his mind and agree to talk to The Enquirer-Journal about his experience.

One sunny afternoon in August of 2009 I was driving south through the spectacular Sonoma County wine country on Highway 101. The four-lane roadway was practically empty. There was not a cloud in the sky. I was moving in the kind of “hypnotic state” that long car trips can bring on.

 Not surprising given what was about to ensue, I was driving to what I imagined was an important UFO meeting. It was to be held at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) located near Petaluma California. IONS was co-founded in 1973 by former astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell, one of six men who walked on the moon.

Noetics is the branch of philosophy that explores human consciousness. Thus my destination seemed to be part of a “message” that I was about to receive from an unseen, non-human intelligence.

The temperature outside my car was over ninety. With the windows rolled up and the AC on, I was in a kind of bubble flying down the highway. Perhaps the monotonous drone of the engine and the bright sunlight reflecting off the glistening grape vines brought me to a timeless moment without thought. It is an altered state of consciousness that I believe can serve as a kind of “meditation equivalent” and facilitates contact with UFO intelligence.

As the car rolled around a hillside I saw two small rectangular shaped clouds in the sky. They were directly in front of me. This strange visual display was located at about thirty degrees up from a horizon that was formed by rolling hills covered with purple fruit.

The two rectangular clouds were lying lengthwise, floated motionlessly, and were so close that one sharp right angle corner of one cloud was touching the other. This weird configuration of two “cloud rectangles” covered only a small section of the sky. I estimated this distance to be about two palms’ width when the arms were fully extended. 

They looked like a pair of children’s toy blocks painted white and displayed lengthwise. The road, straight as an arrow, was heading directly under the weird formation.

I am aware of the unusual ways in which UFO Intelligence can mentally interact with the consciousness of recurrent UFO experiencers. Not taking myself very seriously, I “sent out to the universe” the thought message,

“OK whoever you are, you’ve got my attention now. Yeah I can see the funny looking clouds right in front of me. 

And then I added, “But if you really want to get my attention show me a flying disc.”

My car picked up speed as I went downhill. I gazed at the beautiful scenery moving by. For a minute or two I lost sight of the white rectangular clouds that were the only clouds visible in the broad expense of sky.

When I looked up to my chagrin, those strange clouds had merged to create an image of a flying disc. It was pointing upwards to the right as if it were taking off. The left side of the disc looked as if a small piece of white cloud had been broken off and had formed tiny tufts of white in a straight line that trailed out from the back of the “saucer.” It was as if a child had drawn a saucer in take off mode with puffs of white cloud forming the “exhaust” trail. 

Could it be merely a coincidence that the clouds formed a disc shape just after my unusual request? Perhaps my interpretation that this represents genuine communication is just another case of contactee wishful thinking. There is of course no way I can prove this is another example of the consciousness connection that in my judgment is central to the UFO contact experience.

My impression that this strange cloud formation represented a kind of communication with UFO intelligence filled me with both excitement and disappointment. Excitement in that I hungered for contact and the anomalous clouds seemed to confirm a mental link with what I believe is an unseen intelligence associated with flying saucers. I was disappointed because after nearly twenty years of contact work, in what I imagined was a grand crusade promoting “interspecies’ communication,” I was left with such equivocal results. Was this experience evidence of a consciousness link or simply a silly mind game?

After all my efforts, writing scores of articles, conducting dozens of fieldwork sessions, and many public lectures about what I call the “Contact Underground,” all that I had earned was the “privilege” of viewing a fleeting image in the sky that looked like a child’s drawing of a flying saucer.

UFO intelligence in my judgment has an extraordinary psi capability that allows it to communicate with humans in a multitude of unconventional ways most importantly via consciousness. They offer experiencers opportunities to test the mental connection in ways that are often highly ambiguous and sometimes quite playful. This unseen intelligence repeatedly challenges us to distinguish wishful thinking from genuine interaction.

This high strangeness event reinforced the notion that perhaps UFO intelligence isn’t here to “visit” our planet, but rather is to interact with and transform human consciousness.

For the time being cloud formations that seem to communicate a message are relatively rare and restricted to a select group of UFO aficionados. I sometimes wonder what might be the reaction of the Earth’s peoples if this phenomenon became increasingly common. What a creative and relatively non-threatening way this could be to alert us to their presence.

What might be the reaction of the establishment to such a radical occurrence of meaningful cloud formations appearing in the sky all over the planet? Would the control groups who imagine that their job is to keep a lid on the situation hire an army of ultra-light pilots to hoax “cloud formations?” Something similar was rumored to have occurred in the crop circle region of England where contests occur to decide who can “hoax” the best crop circle.

At this time hoaxing cloud formations might be a technologically challenging and expensive way of preventing “the natives from becoming restless.” Perhaps UFO intelligence is waiting for such human capabilities to arise before employing clouds to communicate their presence. In that way our “masters” will not be excessively alarmed and the contact drama will continue to unfold in its usual fashion of high strangeness mixed with a heavy dose of vexing ambiguity. Till then I suppose we will simply have to wait and keep watching the skies.

Giant Moths Have Descended on Malaysia, And No One Knows Why

The moths, Lyssa Zampa, are startlingly large. Their wingspans can grow up to six inches. They aren’t poisonous, and they aren’t known to carry diseases. But, in Malaysia and Singapore, there are a lot of them—an unusually heavy presence. There are so many giant moths swarming parts of these countries that thousands of them managed to disrupt a soccer match.

For the most part, they’ve been welcomed as curiosities by people living in the region. But there are superstitions about the moths, as Malaysian newspaper The Star reports:

“Old people say someone is visiting,” said Olivia Airine Sue, alluding to the myth that moths were physical manifestations of departed loved ones.

“Not a good omen,” said user Tom Said, while Vivien Wong wrote that it “must be a sign that bad things are going to happen soon”.

The moths usually appear in the summer, but rarely in such large numbers. They haven’t been active en masse like this for almost a decade now, since 2005.

It’s clear that the moths are attracted to the lights of the city, and but the reason for this year’s influx is still a mystery. Some experts think that the large numbers this year are due to a lack of predators and parasites. Others say that weather conditions this year might have been particularly good for caterpillars. – SmithsonianMag

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) recorded several sightings of unidentified flying objects [UFOs] in a top secret report. In 1980, a civil action suit was brought against the NSA by a group called Citizens Against Unidentified Flying Objects Secrecy.

Since that time, the NSA has declassified many reports on UFOs.

Here’s a look at four of the incidents in one of the declassified documents. Information has been redacted, making it difficult at times to piece together the findings. The reports often conclude the objects could be propaganda balloons or satellites.

1. Radar Detects Multiple UFOs Same Time Daily

Multiple UFOs were detected on radar usually between the time of 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. traveling against the wind, according to the NSA report. The largest number observed at one time was eight, and they were estimated to be flying at a height of 50,000 feet. The objects were described as yellow or green and as drifting over the area (the location is not given).

Military electronics experts were sent to investigate, along with a civilian meteorologist and a civilian scientist.

It seems one person thought the UFOs could be sophisticated devices of some sort, though it is unclear who held this opinion or what specific kind of devices they could be. The report states: “Possibility that UFO’s some kind of sophisticated [redacted] device appears remote though this is what [redacted] suspects.”

“Possibly these are reflections of [word redacted] and/or [word redacted] propaganda balloons, depending on wind direction at UFO’s altitude.”

The report states that four reliable Americans spotted them and said they may be satellites or space debris. One of the observers had spent years professionally observing satellites. Though the sentence specifically describing this observer’s opinion is partially redacted or illegible, it seems to indicate he thought the object he saw was similar to a satellite: “He indicated this observation, made from [redacted] outside [redacted] was of [illegible] nature, a yellowish object on a steady course.”

2. 33 Yellow or Green UFOs Spotted

As in the previous report, another report states that UFOs described as yellow or green seem to drift over an area (again unspecified). A total of 33 were sighted in the area.

The chances that the UFOs are “some kind of sophisticated [redacted] device appears remote,” the report states. “Unless amplifying [illegible] received, most plausible explanation of UFOs is that they are either [redacted] or [redacted] propaganda balloons.”

3. A Ball of Light Splits Into 3

It is common for people who report seeing UFOs to describe multiple, smaller UFOs coming out of one large one.

In one of the NSA reports, it seems the original object disappeared, however, becoming three separate objects.

“[Redacted] saw an elongated ball of fire moving … [redacted] … high rate of speed. After covering some distance, it split into three balls of fire,” the heavily redacted report states.

This is what you get when you slap a porcupine

After confusing a porcupine with an opossum, Antonio Rodrigues Mororó, 50, from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was left with almost 400 porcupine quills stuck in his hand.

During a party at Mr Mororó’s home, one of his son’s said that his pregnant wife was afraid to enter the house because the animal was sitting on a wall by the entrance stairs.

So, in a bid to remove it, Mr Mororó slapped the animal, resulting in him receiving a handful of quills. He was taken to the Emergency Unit of the local hospital and despite three shots of anaesthetic, the pain continued.

Following a tetnus jab and a course of antibiotics, Mr Mororó is recovering, albeit with a hand full of holes. Neighbours have reported that the porcupine is still living in the neighbourhood.

Here’s a New Method to Sniff Out Aliens

The powerful new model can help detect life on extrasolar planets more effectively than ever before.

Developed by researchers from the University College London, the technique works by analyzing the absorption of different colored light by an extrasolar planet’s atmosphere and then comparing it to a predetermined spectrum to find out which molecules may be present there.

The new model will focus primarily on finding methane, the simplest organic molecule that is often used as an indicator for the presence of life.

“Current models of methane are incomplete, leading to a severe underestimation of methane levels on planets,” said Professor Jonathan Tennyson. “We anticipate our new model will have a big impact on the future study of planets and ‘cool’ stars external to our solar system, potentially helping scientists identify signs of extraterrestrial life.”

If all goes well then the new technique could soon be used to analyze the atmospheres of planets discovered around distant stars in an effort to determine whether life may have developed there. NDTV

TV show seeking UFO activists

It seems reality TV shows love the idea of including UFO enthusiast among their casts. We have received yet another request to send out to our readers.

This time the production company is Bunim/Murray Productions (the same production I worked with when I was on Keeping Up with the Kardashians). They are developing a show about activists, and according to their representative, they want to include UFO activists.

They are looking for people preferably younger than 35. Yeah, I know, that counts me out too. Ugh. Although, my advice is people over 35 should still apply anyway. It is worth a shot.

They are also looking for people who have had their relationships with their family or friends affected by their passion for UFOs and or aliens. That really isn’t hard, because most of us into this topic have faced that issue. My cousin once told me I would never have a girlfriend as long as my full time job had to do with UFOs. Fortunately, he was wrong. However, there have been a couple times when my dates were clearly not impressed when they found out what I do.

NASA Reports on Credible UFO Sightings in Ancient Times

The universe is full of mysteries that challenge our current knowledge. In “Beyond Science” Epoch Times collects stories about these strange phenomena to stimulate the imagination and open up previously undreamed of possibilities. Are they true? You decide.

The description of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) has remained fairly consistent throughout history, stretching back into antiquity. While many could be attributed to natural phenomena, an in-depth study by NASA’s Richard Stothers found “There nonetheless remains a small residue of puzzling accounts, and regardless of what interpretation one places on them, these constitute a phenomenon that spans centuries of time and widely different cultures.”

Stothers (1939–2009) received a degree in mathematics at Princeton University, earned his Ph.D. at Harvard, and was a permanent member of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

Here’s a look at 5 UFO sightings Stothers deemed puzzling in a 2007 report.

 1. Chariots in the Sky Witnessed by Many

Historian Josephus wrote around 65 A.D. about a fantastical sighting over Judea: “On the 21st of the month Artemisium, there appeared a miraculous phenomenon, passing belief. Indeed, what I am about to relate would, I imagine, have been deemed a fable, were it not for the narratives of eyewitnesses and the subsequent calamities which deserved to be so signalized. For, before sunset throughout all parts of the country, chariots were seen in the air and armed battalions hurtling through the clouds and encompassing the cities.”

Josephus likely witnessed this event himself, said Stothers, though he bolstered his credibility by appealing to eyewitness accounts. The description does not seem to correspond to any natural phenomena, Strothers wrote.

 2. Thousands of Roman Soldiers Witness UFO?

Plutarch wrote of a sighting witnessed by thousands. In 74 B.C., the Roman army was moving to engage the forces of King Mithridates VI in the area of modern-day Turkey.

“With no apparent change of weather, but all on a sudden, the sky burst asunder, and a huge, flame-like body was seen to fall between the two armies,” he wrote. “In shape, it was most like a wine-jar (pithoi), and in color, like molten silver. Both sides were astonished at the sight, and separated. This marvel, as they say, occurred in Phrygia, at a place called Otryae.”

Stothers pointed out that freshly fallen meteorites are black, not “molten silver” color, which suggests it was not a meteorite. Plutarch also made no mention of the impact.

Stothers wrote: “The object must have measured much more than a meter across, since it was easily resolved at a distance greater than half the range of a bowshot. If it had remained on the ground, a meteorite of such size would doubtless have become a cult object in Phrygia, with its long tradition of meteorite worship, yet later historical records referring to Phrygian meteorites are silent about it.”

Nonetheless, there is a chance the UFO was a bolide, a bright meteor that often explodes.

 3. Sightings During the Second Punic War in Rome

Many sightings were recorded during and following the Second Punic War (218–201 B.C.) in Livy’s prodigy lists. The lists were derived from the Annales Maximi, published by the Pontifex Maximus of Rome. This source is considered trustworthy and accurate, explained Stothers, because of the time-consuming and thorough procedure required by Roman authorities to investigate claims before they would be recorded.

In Rome, in the winter of 218 B.C., “A spectacle of ships (navium) gleamed in the sky.”

In 217 B.C., “at Arpi, round shields (parmas) were seen in the sky.”

In 173 B.C., “at Lanuvium a spectacle of a great fleet was said to have been seen in the sky.”

It is not likely that suggestive cloud formations would have been mistaken for UFOs, Strother said, since these formations had long been understood and were familiar features. These sightings are also not likely a mock sun, because mock suns are routinely described as “double suns” or “triple suns.”

4. ‘Angel Hair’ Glassy Fibers

In modern UFO reports, it is common to hear about either glassy fibers or a chalky substance left behind by the UFO, known as angel hair. Ancient reports also include angel hair.

In 196 A.D., the historian Cassius Dio wrote: “A fine rain resembling silver descended froma clear sky upon the Forum of Augustus. I did not, it is true, see it as it was falling, but noticed it after it had fallen, and by means of it I plated some bronze coins with silver; they retained the same appearance for three days, but by the fourth day all the substance rubbed on them had disappeared.”

Two other “rains of chalk” were reported in Cales 214 B.C. and in Rome 98 B.C.

5. UFO Inhabited
Pope Pius I’s brother was probably the only witness of this UFO sighting near Via Campana, Italy, around 150 A.D.: “On a sunny day, a ‘beast’ like a piece of pottery (ceramos) about 100 feet in size, multicolored on top and shooting out fiery rays, landed in a dust cloud accompanied by a ‘maiden’ clad in white.”

Stothers concluded “This collection of what might be termed ancient UFO reports has been culled from a much larger number of reports of aerial objects, most of whose identifications with known phenomena are either certain or at least probable. Embedded in the mass of relatively explicable ancient reports, however, is a small set of unexplained (or at least not wholly explained) reports from presumably credible witnesses.”

“Any viable theory must reckon with the extraordinary persistence and consistency of the phenomena discussed here over many centuries.”
