Volgens de kwantummechanica kan een enkel deeltje beschreven worden als een golffunctie die zich uitspreidt over willekeurig grote afstanden, maar die nooit waargenomen wordt in twee of meer plaatsen. Met andere woorden, als je een kwantumdeeltje waarneemt, is het daar waar je het aantreft, en wanneer je het opnieuw op een andere plaats waarneemt, is het daar. Natuurkundigen zeggen daarvan dat het deeltje door de ruimte "tunnelt" van de ene plaats naar de andere, maar dat is niet helemaal correct. Juister is te zeggen dat het deeltje op een bepaalde plaats is waar het waargenomen wordt, zich dan over de hele ruimte uitspreidt als een golf, om daarna opnieuw te verschijnen op de tweede plaats waar het wordt waargenomen.

Het fenomeen wordt in de kwantumtheorie verklaard door wat Einstein in 1927 geringschattend afdeed als "spookachtige actie op afstand", namelijk de onmiddellijke niet-lokale instorting van de golffunctie tot de plaats waar het deeltje is waargenomen.

Bijna 90 jaar later hebben onderzoekers van het Centre for Quantum Dynamics van de Amerikaanse Griffith University en van de universiteit van Tokio een enkel foton gedeeld tussen hun beide laboratoria en met homodyne detectoren - die golfachtige eigenschappen meten - aangetoond dat de instorting van de golffunctie echt is.

Het fenomeen is het sterkste bewijs tot nu toe voor de verstrengeling van een enkel deeltje, een ongewone vorm van kwantumverstrengeling die in toenemende mate onderzocht wordt met het oog op kwantumcommunicatie en kwantumcomputers.

Het onderzoek is gepubliceerd in "Nature Communications".

"Einstein heeft de orthodoxe kwantummechanica nooit aanvaard, en aan de basis van zijn stellingname lag dit enkel-deeltje-argument.", zei professor Howard Wiseman, het hoofd van het Centre for Quantum Dynamics, op de website van de Griffith University. "Daarom is het belangrijk om de niet-lokale instorting van de golffunctie met een enkel deeltje aan te tonen."

Aan de hand van die verschillende metingen zie je de golffunctie op verschillende manieren instorten, wat het bestaan van de instorting bewijst en aantoont dat Einstein fout zat", zo zei hij.

De natuurkundige Albert Einstein is vooral bekend voor zijn relativiteitstheorie maar hij heeft ook een zeer belangrijke rol gespeeld in de ontwikkeling van de kwantumfysica.

Op diverse plaatsen werden dimensieportalen waargenomen.

Afgelopen week is weer een bijzondere geweest wat betreft UFO’s, vulkanen en dimensieportalen.

Het begint bij de Colima vulkaan, niet ver van Mexico City. Begin februari werd daar een vreemde UFO waargenomen die de wereldpers haalde.


Afgelopen week, op 22 maart 2015, was het weer raak bij de Colima vulkaan.

Dit keer zijn het een aantal donkere UFO’s die boven de vulkaan zijn vastgelegd en ontdekt door de bekende Youtube onderzoeker Streetcap1.

Deze foto’s werden genomen met de live webcam en het lijkt alsof de ene afdaalt in de krater van de vulkaan. Jammer dat de webcam maar iedere 20 tot 30 seconden beelden toont, in plaats van een live feed. Als dit er wel geweest zou zijn dan had je een goed idee gekregen over welke kant ze opvliegen. 

Enkele dagen later bij dezelfde vulkaan.

Op 25 maart 2015 ontdekt ufoloog Scott C. Waring de volgende vreemde wolk boven de Colima vulkaan.

Voor ons is dit uiteraard geen vreemde wolk, maar een dimensieportaal die buitenaardsen gebruiken om van het ene deel van het universum naar het andere te vliegen, zonder dat ze te maken hebben met beperkingen van tijd en ruimte.

Het mooie is ook dat volgens Scott de wolken achter deze wolken op behoorlijke snelheid naar rechts bewegen, terwijl deze volkomen stil hing.

Ook hier weer prachtig bewijs van de wolken/moederschepen of beter gezegd dimensieportalen.

De ene dag zijn er op die locatie UFO’s waar te nemen en enkele dagen later verschijnt de vreemde wolk.

Dan nog een dergelijk geval wat eerder dit jaar plaatsvond, 9 januari 2015, en bekend is geworden via MUFON.

De getuige vertelt het volgende:

Ik keek naar de lucht en zag dit vreemd gat in de wolken. Ik was onderweg naar onze plaatselijke vuilstort toen ik naar de lucht keek en deze bijna perfecte cirkel ontdekte.

Ik kwam uit de auto en nam een foto met mijn iPhone. Ik ben 35 jaar lang piloot geweest en ik heb nog nooit zoiets gezien in al die tijd.

In eerste instantie zag ik de twee zwarte objecten onder de wolk niet totdat ik thuis kwam en de foto downloadde. Ik heb het doorgestuurd naar het Weerkanaal in de hoop dat een expert daar mij iets meer kon vertellen.

Toen ik enkele dagen later weer op de website keek, was mijn foto zonder verder commentaar verwijderd.

Sphere Of Light Sighting Video Over Central Coast Baffles Witnesses and Experts

A brief sighting in the sky left teenager Josh Elton and his family in Gorokan in the Central Coast baffled. According to 15-year-old Josh, they were just sitting on the lounge at around 7:30 last Thursday night when he and his younger brother saw what they initially thought a plane flying very low.

Josh said that the mysterious aerial object was swerving all around as Josh and his family looked out to San Remo. Josh thought that it was going to crash.

His mother thought it might have been a meteor, but no news something about it hitting the Central Coast.

Josh managed to get his iPad and used it to get a video of their encounter. He captured a 12-second video of the UFO.

Josh said that his friends and neighbours were equally stumped to the spherical, luminous object when he showed the brief video to them.

UFO sightings expert Dominic McNamara took a closer look at the video. McNamara, a senior member of the UFO and Paranormal Research Society of Australia, said that flashing lights regularly appear at a slower frequency, but sometimes appear to be a revolving object.

McNamara said that the UFO seems to change course slightly toward the left camera as it about to disappear. He was basing his analysis on vector diagram and measurement.

McNamara concluded that it was impossible to identify the object and no other report about it. He is planning to examine the video further. He also revealed that they are trying to search for other accounts in the area.

The last UFO sighting reported from the Central Coast happened in July 2013 when a hobby photographer Drew Ryan snapped images and extensive video footage of a large UFO above Empire Bay.

The UFOs Keep Coming to St. Helens and Merseyside

The town of St. Helens in Merseyside, England, has in the past been known for mining and glassmaking but lately it’s becoming recognized as one of cities in Merseyside that have been visited repeatedly by UFOs. The latest sighting occurred recently above the town center and was captured on video. It’s one of over 30 sightings since 2000 in Merseyside. Are aliens coming to visit where The Beatles got their start?

This UFO was spotted by St. Helens resident George Hunter.

• It was just after midnight and as I looked through the kitchen window I saw some very bright lights in a triangular pattern quite high in the night sky. I filmed the lights and zoomed in on them, but I only managed to get a short clip as the lights moved out of shot as I was filming them. They were very fast and gone in less than a second, it was almost like something out of Star Trek moving at warp speed.

Hunter described the size of the UFO as “massive” and observed that it was “completely silent.”

St. Helens has been visited by UFOs before. In 2009 there were numerous reports of UFOs over the city in July and October. In September 2014 this UFO was seen hovering for almost a minute over a field before leaving quickly.

That’s just some of the UFOs visiting St. Helens. This map shows the locations of many of the 30 UFOs in Merseyside reported to the Ministry of Defence over the 10 year period between 2000 and 2009.

Is something attracting UFOs to St. Helens and Merseyside? Are people there more attentive to the skies and quicker with their cell phones and cameras? Or are aliens just trying to get to Liverpool, the birthplace of The Beatles and the location of at least 10 sightings in that ten year period? After all, they did sing about their words flying “across the universe.”

The origins of human beings according to ancient Sumerian texts

Sumer, or the ‘land of civilized kings’, flourished in Mesopotamia, now modern-day Iraq, around 4500 BC. Sumerians created an advanced civilization with its own system of elaborate language and writing, architecture and arts, astronomy and mathematics. Their religious system was a complex one comprised of hundreds of gods. According to the ancient texts, each Sumerian city was guarded by its own god; and while humans and gods used to live together, the humans were servants to the gods.

The Sumerian creation myth can be found on a tablet in Nippur, an ancient Mesopotamian city founded in approximately 5000 BC.

The creation of Earth (Enuma Elish) according to the Sumerian tablets begins like this:

When in the height heaven was not named,
And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name,
And the primeval Apsu, who begat them,
And chaos, Tiamut, the mother of them both
Their waters were mingled together,
And no field was formed, no marsh was to be seen;
When of the gods none had been called into being,
And none bore a name, and no destinies were ordained;
Then were created the gods in the midst of heaven,
Lahmu and Lahamu were called into being...

Sumerian mythology claims that, in the beginning, human-like gods ruled over Earth. When they came to the Earth, there was much work to be done and these gods toiled the soil, digging to make it habitable and mining its minerals.

The texts mention that at some point the gods mutinied against their labour.

When the gods like men
Bore the work and suffered the toll
The toil of the gods was great,
The work was heavy, the distress was much.

Anu, the god of gods, agreed that their labour was too great. His son Enki, or Ea, proposed to create man to bear the labour, and so, with the help of his half-sister Ninki, he did. A god was put to death, and his body and blood was mixed with clay. From that material the first human being was created, in likeness to the gods.

You have slaughtered a god together
With his personality
I have removed your heavy work
I have imposed your toil on man.
…
In the clay, god and man
Shall be bound,
To a unity brought together;
So that to the end of days
The Flesh and the Soul
Which in a god have ripened –
That soul in a blood-kinship be bound.

This first man was created in Eden, a Sumerian word which means ‘flat terrain’. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Eden is mentioned as the garden of the gods and is located somewhere in Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Initially human beings were unable to reproduce on their own, but were later modified with the help of Enki and Ninki. Thus, Adapa was created as a fully functional and independent human being. This ‘modification’ was done without the approval of Enki’s brother, Enlil, and a conflict between the gods began. Enlil became the adversary of man, and the Sumerian tablet mentions that men served gods and went through much hardship and suffering.

Adapa, with the help of Enki, ascended to Anu where he failed to answer a question about ‘the bread and water of life’. Opinions vary on the similarities between this creation story and the biblical story of Adam and Eve in Eden.

NASA asteroid hunter spacecraft data available to public

Millions of images of celestial objects, including asteroids, observed by NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) spacecraft now are available online to the public. The data was collected following the restart of the asteroid-seeking spacecraft in December 2013 after a lengthy hibernation. 

The collection of millions of infrared images and billions of infrared measurements of asteroids, stars, galaxies and quasars spans data obtained between December 13, 2013, and December 13, 2014.

"One of the most satisfying things about releasing these cutting-edge astronomical data to the public is seeing what other exciting and creative projects the scientific community does with them," said Amy Mainzer, principal investigator for NEOWISE at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in Pasadena, California.

In the first year of the survey, NEOWISE captured 2.5 million image sets, detecting and providing data on over 10,000 solar system objects. The data revealed 129 new solar system objects, including 39 previously undiscovered near-Earth objects. Each of the images also contains a multitude of background stars, nebulae and galaxies. More than 10 billion measurements of these more distant objects are contained in the release of the NEOWISE data.

"And we're far from finished," said Mainzer. "We're only into our second year of additional science collection, and we've already added another 21 new discoveries including six new near-Earth objects."

NEOWISE is a space telescope that scans the skies for asteroids and comets. The telescope sees infrared light, which allows it to pick up the heat signature of asteroids and obtain better estimates of their true sizes. As a result, NEOWISE can see dark asteroids that are harder for visible-light surveys to find. Nearly all of the NEOWISE discoveries have been large —hundreds of yards, or meters, wide— and very dark, similar to printer toner. When NEOWISE's infrared data on an object is combined with that of a visible-light optical telescope, it helps scientists understand the object's composition.

NEOWISE always looks in the dawn and twilight skies – the direction perpendicular to a line between Earth and the sun. This unique vantage point makes it possible for NEOWISE to spot objects that approach Earth from the direction of the sun, unlike ground-based telescopes that are only able to view the night sky.

Originally called the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), the spacecraft was placed in hibernation in 2011 after its primary mission was completed. In September 2013, it was reactivated, renamed NEOWISE and assigned a new mission to assist NASA's efforts to identify the population of potentially hazardous near-Earth objects and help characterize previously known asteroids and comets to provide information about their sizes and compositions.

NASA Wednesday announced more details in its plan for its Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM), which in the mid-2020s will test a number of new capabilities needed for future human expeditions to deep space, including to Mars. For ARM, a robotic spacecraft will capture a boulder from the surface of a near-Earth asteroid and move it into a stable orbit around the moon for exploration by astronauts, all in support of advancing the nation's journey to Mars. The agency plans to announce the specific asteroid selected for the mission no earlier than 2019, approximately a year before launching the robotic spacecraft.

NASA also announced it has increased the detection of near-Earth Asteroids by 65 percent since launching its asteroid initiative three years ago.

"NEOWISE is a vital asset in NASA's program to find objects that truly represent an impact hazard to Earth," said Lindley Johnson, program executive for the Near-Earth Object Observation Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The data reveals how far we've come to understand the danger to Earth but it will still take a concerted effort to find all of them that could do serious damage."

In 2012, the president's NASA budget included, and Congress authorized, $20.4 million for an expanded NASA Near-Earth Object (NEO) Observations Program, increasing the resources for this critical program from the $4 million per year it had received since the 1990s. The program was again expanded in fiscal year 2014, with a budget of $40.5 million. NASA is asking Congress for $50 million for this important work in the 2016 budget.

The Ancient Stone Head Of Guatemala That History Wants To Forget

March 28, 2015 - Over half a century ago, deep in the jungles of Guatemala, a gigantic stone head was uncovered.  The face had fine features, thin lips and large nose and its face was directed up at the sky.  Unusually, the face demonstrated Caucasian features which were not consistent with any of the pre-Hispanic races of America.  The discovery rapidly attracted attention, but just as quickly it slipped away into the pages of forgotten history.

News of the discovery first emerged when Dr Oscar Rafael Padilla Lara, a doctor of philosophy, lawyer and notary, received a photograph of the head in 1987 along with a description that the photograph was taken in the 1950s by the owner of the land where the head was found and that it was located “somewhere in the jungles of Guatemala”.

The photograph and story was printed in a small article in the newsletter ‘Ancient Skies’, which was picked up and read by well-known explorer and author David Hatcher Childress, one of our guest authors at Ancient-Origins.net, who sought out to discover more about the mysterious stone head. He tracked down Dr Padilla who reported that he found the owners of the property, the Biener family, on which the monolith was found. The site was 10 kilometres from a small village in La Democracia in the south of Guatemala.

However, Dr Padilla said that he was in despair when he reached the site and found that the site had been obliterated: “It was destroyed by revolutionaries about ten years ago. We had located the statue too late. It was used as target practice by anti-government rebels. This totally disfigured it, sort of like the way the Sphinx in Egypt had its nose shot off by the Turks, only worse,” he said.  The eyes, nose and mouth had completely gone. Padilla was able to measure its height as between 4 and 6 metres, with the head resting on a neck. Padilla did not return again to the site due to armed attacks between government forces and rebel forces in the area.

The destruction of the head meant the story died a rapid death until it was picked up again a few years ago by filmmakers behind “Revelations of the Mayans 2012 and Beyond” who used the photograph to claim that extra-terrestrials have had contact with past civilisations. The producer published a document written by Guatemalan archaeologist Hector E Majia who wrote: “I certify that this monument presents no characteristics of Maya, Nahuatl, Olmec or any other pre-Hispanic civilization. It was created by an extraordinary and superior civilization with awesome knowledge of which there is no record of existence on this planet.”

However, far from helping the cause and the investigation into the monolith, this publication only served to have the opposite effect, throwing the whole story into the hands of a justifiably sceptical audience who thought that it was all just a publicity stunt. Even the letter itself has been drawn into question with some saying that it is not genuine.

Nevertheless, it appears the giant head did exist and there is no evidence to suggest the original photograph is not authentic or that Dr Padilla’s account was false.  So assuming it was real, the questions remain: Where did it come from? Who made it? And why?

New Theory Suggests Quantum Effects Caused by Interacting Parallel Worlds

March 28, 2015 - The theory, first published by Professor Bill Poirier four years ago, has recently attracted attention from the foundational physics community, leading to an invited Commentary in a top-ranking physics journal, Physical Review X.

According to Poirier's theory, quantum reality is not wave-like at all, but is comprised of multiple, classical-like worlds. In each of these worlds, every object has very definite physical attributes, such as position and momentum. Within a given world, objects interact with each other classically. All quantum effects, on the other hand, manifest as interactions between "nearby" parallel worlds.        

         The idea of many worlds is not new. In 1957, Hugh Everett III published what is now called the "Many Worlds" interpretation of quantum mechanics. "But in Everett's theory, the worlds are not well defined," according to Poirier, "because the underlying mathematics is that of the standard wave-based quantum theory."

In contrast, in Poirier's "Many Interacting Worlds" theory, the worlds are built into the mathematics right from the start.

Does this prove anything definitive about the nature of reality? "Not yet," says Poirier. "Experimental observations are the ultimate test of any theory. So far, Many Interacting Worlds makes the same predictions as standard quantum theory, so all we can say for sure at present is that it might be correct."

Poirier first arrived at the idea unexpectedly, in the pursuit of a much more practical goal. "I didn't just sit down one day and say 'gosh, let's invent a crazy new quantum interpretation with interacting parallel worlds.' I was trying to develop an efficient computational method using something called quantum trajectories, when it suddenly hit me how you could get everything from the trajectories (i.e. the worlds) themselves, without actually needing any wave."

Poirier published both the new mathematics and the new interpretation in a 2010 Chemical Physics paper, leading to a collaboration with mathematician Jeremy Schiff at Bar-Ilan University. This in turn led to a 2012 publication in the Journal of Chemical Physics which—with over 20,000 downloads—is one of the most downloaded papers in that journal's history. More recently, this work has garnered the attention of the broader community. "We are very pleased that other physicists and even philosophers are now getting involved," says Poirier.

One such researcher is Australian physicist Howard Wiseman of Griffith University in Brisbane. "I am very glad to have met Bill," says Wiseman, adding that Poirier is "taking literally this idea that you have an ensemble of particles...rather than just an individual one." Wiseman and coworkers recently submitted their first article on Many Interacting Worlds to Physical Review X, which was published together with Poirier's Commentary. Wiseman's approach is a discrete version, for which "there is a finite but extremely large ensemble of particles...well, ensemble of worlds, I should say," he explains.

Regarding the mathematical developments in Wiseman's article, Poirier says, "These are great ideas—not only conceptually, but also with regard to the new numerical breakthroughs they are almost certain to engender. Our group offered the foundational physics community a new interpretation of quantum mechanics; in effect, they have now returned the favor, by offering us a promising new computational method."

NASA Spending A Billion Dollars To Give Moon Its Own Moon: Here's How And Why

The Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) is aimed at bringing a boulder from an asteroid into orbit around the moon. Here is a rundown of how the mission will unfold.

The Asteroid Redirect Mission was originally designed to capture a complete asteroid and bring the space rock back into orbit around the moon.

But NASA officials announced a modified version of the plan on March 25, one which involves collecting just a single boulder from the surface of an asteroid, and driving the boulder to an orbit around our own natural satellite.

Asteroid EV5 is the most likely target for the historic mission.

The robotic ARM mission, scheduled for launch in 2020, will take between 215 and 400 days to corral the boulder into orbit around the moon. Five years later, space travelers will launch to the captured space rock aboard a Space Launch System (SLS) booster, housed in an Orion space capsule. Once they arrive at the body, two astronauts will leave the vehicle in a series of spacewalks to collect samples of the boulder.

Asteroid surveys carried out by NASA officials have resulted in a 65 percent increase in the number of near-Earth objects detected over the last three years.

"Asteroids are a hot topic. Not just because they could pose a threat to Earth, but also for their scientific value and NASA's planned mission to one as a stepping stone to Mars," Jim Green, director of NASA Planetary Science, said.
 

The mission is aimed at testing several technologies needed for future missions, including a journey to Mars. A Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) drive is one of the new pieces of equipment that will be examined on the mission. This engine collects solar energy through solar cells, and uses that energy to propel charged particles out an exhaust, providing thrust to the spacecraft.

Funding for the mission is currently capped at $1.25 billion, not including launch costs. Those funds are divided among several budget departments in the NASA budget.

"I think there will be some (funding) increase that is specific to the mission. We will take advantage of solar electric propulsion, which is estimated roughly at $300 million, which is already in the runout for space technologies. There's some capture technique mechanisms that were already in parts of the human exploration budget," Lightfoot said.

Asteroid EV5 was discovered in 2008, during observations made as part of of the Catalina Sky Survey, a project to discover comets and asteroids and to search for Near-Earth objects. The object is roughly 1,300 feet in diameter. Observations reveal the presence of large boulders and smaller debris on the surface of the body, and astronomers believe boulders around the desired size of 10 feet are also likely present on the space rock.

Two other asteroids, Itokawa and Bennu, are also being considered as potential targets for the boulder retrieval mission. A final decision on the destination of the spacecraft will not need to be made until the year 2019, one year before launch of the robotic segment of the mission.

Fitzgerald: The day space aliens visited Stockton

I took a couple days off last week, and so missed National Alien Abduction Day, March 20. Believe it or not, Stockton has a significant place in Alien Abduction studies.

According to experts — ufologists, or whatever they call themselves — the first documented case of attempted alien abduction occurred, yes, outside Stockton.

The following story is chronicled not only in books such as "Alien Contacts and Abductions" by Jenny Randles but also in pioneer Stockton newspapers.

"THREE STRANGE VISITORS

"Who Possibly Came From the Planet Marsµ

"Seen on a Country Road by Colonel H.G. Shaw and a Companion"

That was the headline of the Stockton Evening Mail of Nov. 25, 1896.

According to the Mail, this Colonel Shaw, a former editor at the Mail, and a young man named Camille Spooner were riding a horse-drawn buggy back from Lodi. It was dark.

“We were jogging along quietly when the horse stopped suddenly and gave a snort of terror," Shaw said.

"Looking up we beheld three strange beings. They resembled humans in many respects, but still they were not like anything I had ever seen. They were nearly or quite seven feet high and very slender. ”

These ‘beings’ wore no clothing, Shaw reported. Instead, they were “covered with a natural growth hard to describe. It was not hair, neither was it like feathers, but it was as soft as silk to the touch.”

Shaw sensed the silken strangers meant no harm. “They seemed to take great interest in ourselves, the horse and buggy, and scrutinized everything very carefully."

Shaw approached them.

“Their faces and heads were without hair, the ears were very small, and the nose had the appearance of polished ivory,” Shaw said. Their mouths were tiny, “while the eyes were large and lustrous.”

Shaw added: “They were possessed of a strange and indescribable beauty.”

Ever the newsman, Shaw asked the aliens where they were from. “They seemed not to understand me, but began — well, "warbling" expresses it better than talking.”

Shaw touched one.

“Placing my hand under his elbow (I) pressed gently upward, and lo and behold I lifted him from the ground with scarcely an effort. I should judge that the specific gravity of the creature was less than an ounce.”

Each alien carried a shoulder bag attached to a nozzle. “Every little while one or the other would place the nozzle on his mouth, at which time I heard a sound of escaping gas.”

Here is where Stockton entered the annals of alien abduction lore. Inaugurated the annals, in fact.

“One of them, at a signal from one who appeared to be the leader, attempted to lift me, probably with the intention of carrying me away,” Shaw said.

But the aliens failed. “Although I made not the slightest resistance he could not move me, and finally the three of them tried it without the slightest success.

Whipping out egg-shaped lights — “some sort of luminous mineral” — the beings revealed a startling “immense airship” hovering nearby.

“It was 150 feet in length at least, though probably not over twenty feet in diameter ... pointed at both ends, and outside of a large rudder there was no visible machinery.”

Off to the ship they headed, “not as you or I walk, but with a swaying motion, their feet only touching the ground at intervals of about fifteen feet.”

Springing 20 feet up to the ship, the aliens whizzed off. “It went through the air very rapidly and expanded and contracted with a muscular motion, and was soon out of sight."

And that is how Stockton became a charter member of the Alien Abduction Club.

It would be easy to scoff at Shaw as a rustic fabulist … except exactly this sort of programming constantly airs on outlets such as The History Channel. Humans grasp the truth with one hand, while with the other they seize the nozzle and woof from that alien gasbag.

"I have a theory, which, of course, is only a theory,” Shaw said, “that those we beheld were inhabitants of Mars, who have been sent to the Earth for the purpose of securing one of its inhabitants.”

Russia & US agree to build new space station after ISS, work on joint Mars project

In a landmark decision, Russian space agency Roscosmos and its US counterpart NASA have agreed to build a new space station after the current International Space Station (ISS) expires. The operation of the ISS was prolonged until 2024.

“We have agreed that Roscosmos and NASA will be working  together on the program of a future space station,"  Roscosmos chief Igor Komarov said during a news conference on  Saturday.

  The talks were held at Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

  The two agencies will be unifying their standards and systems of  manned space programs, according to Komarov. “This is very  important to future missions and stations.”

The ISS life cycle was to expire in 2020. “Under the ISS  program the door will be open to other participants,” Komarov told  reporters.

  The next goal for the two agencies is a joint mission to Mars,  NASA chief Charles Bolden told journalists.

  Roscosmos and NASA are working with each other and other partners  on a global roadmap of space exploration, Bolden said. “Our  area of cooperation will be Mars. We are discussing how best to  use the resources, the finance, we are setting time frames and  distributing efforts in order to avoid duplication.”

NASA is currently  committed to commercializing space activities. “We are  consciously moving away from government financing of low-orbit  missions,” Bolden said, adding that sometimes NASA “has  been criticized” for that.

  At the same time, he stressed that the US has not abandoned its  goal of returning to the moon. In the future, NASA is planning   “to attract more private developers to our joint exploration  projects of the Moon and Mars,” Bolden said.

I was in 1972 an Airmen in the USAF stationed at Keno AFS, Oregon out of Kingsley Field Oregon. I was a Radar Height Operator during my time there on the mountain. I received orders to go to Udorn, Thailand in 1972. In August of 1972, I packed my family with wife at that time, and young daughter who was born in May of 1971, and a young Labrador Retriever puppy. We were heading to Laredo, Texas for some leave, where both our families resided and my wife would be living with her parents while I was away. I was driving a 1971 Mustang Mach I, and towing a trailer with most of our belongings on it.   

I remember we left in early afternoon and intended to stop only as necessary so as to make it home as soon as possible. The Labrador puppy had been given a small dosage of tranquilizer pills by the base vet so as to keep him calm and sleep since he was riding in a dog carrier at tailgate of the trailer. He was very comfortable and I foresaw no problems as long as we kept to our schedule. The baby was fed and asleep in the back seat where we had set up a make-shift crib.  At about 2:00 AM we were heading west on a long dark stretch of road but could see it was one of those roads that went on forever and then over a distant hill, more highway if you know what I mean. My wife was asleep when I first saw what looked to be some sort of a road block set-up ahead about a mile ahead. I could see the reflection of the cross stripes on a low wooden type structure, is why I though of it as a road block. But I started to wonder why a road block at this time?

I was traveling at about 70 miles per hr. So I knew I would soon come up to it. I woke up my wife to see if she saw the same thing. I started to slow down anyway because I am a law abiding person, used to taking orders. As I got closer I saw no one at the road block just the low road block structure strung across the right side of the highway. I was about one city block length away from the road block and still no one manning it.  Suddenly our puppy in back started to howl, but not like a puppy howl or yelp, but like some sort of monster from Hell and very loud howling and just continued to do so till after we passed this area. All my hair stood up on the back of my neck. My wife and I looked at each other and I hit the gas pedal, feeling very much in danger. Something told me to go and not stop, which I obeyed, I swept around the roadblock on its left side. My wife and I both looked to our right. There was a strange set up and it looked like three daises raised around a cleared center area, like a basketball court with bleachers but one side missing. Very bright lights illuminated it, one disc was facing south and about 100 ft. across more or less and the other two facing each other east and west about same length and all three connected with the south side open. In this areas were many men or not, very white in coloring and they were all wearing what I saw was bright blue overalls and scampering around. There were many pieces of equipment around the inset of the dyes but the center part was clear almost like a short runway or large landing pad. My wife said she saw the same thing except that she saw them wearing white overalls and that they all looked bluish in coloring to her. I looked in the side mirrors and no one was following us.

New Evidence May Identify MYTERY OBJECT 'G2' at Milky Way Galaxy's Core

March 27, 2015 - New observations may finally reveal the identity of a mystery object circling around the monster black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy — or not.

Known to many as "G2," the unidentified object could be a cloud of gas, or it could be a star, depending on who you ask. Discovered in 2011, G2 captured the attention of scientists because it was on its way to making a tight swing around the black hole — potentially providing the dark monster with a snack. The new observations of G2 show that it has remained compact during its swing around the black hole, according to the authors of the new research. Since a gas cloud would likely be smeared out by the gravitational pull of the black hole, the scientists conclude that the object is a star. But the group that discovered G2 says the new results are not enough to make a definitive statement about the identity of this peculiar blob. [Images: Black Holes of the Universe]  

The strange mystery object G2 is a fuzzy-looking thing in most photographs. That's due partly the resolution of those images — it is very difficult to take pictures of the center of the galaxy from Earth's location on the outer edge of the galactic disk.

G2 is also fuzzy-looking because it has an outer layer of gas and dust around it, and that's one of the few things scientists studying it can seem to agree on. What lies inside that dust cloud is the subject of an intense scientific debate.

Leading the inquiry are two groups. The first is led by Stefan Gillessen at the Max Planck Institute, who first identified G2 back in 2011. Gillessen thinks there's enough evidence to show that G2 is a gas cloud, and that it has been smeared out by its close encounter with the black hole.        

The second group is led by Andrea Ghez at the University of California, Los Angeles. Ghez was one of the scientists to first demonstrate that there is a monster black hole at the center of the Milky Way (the black hole is called Sagittarius A*, pronounced "Sagittarius A-star"). Ghez says there's more than sufficient evidence to show that there is a star inside G2's dusty outer shell, and that it has remained compact as it swings around Sagittarius A*.

For the past year it has felt like these two groups have been engaged in a tug of war. Even though more observations have rolled in, they haven't been enough to change anyone's mind. 

Now, a third group has weighed in and picked a side: G2 is a star.

A group of scientists at the University of Cologne in Germany claims the researchers' most recent data shows that G2 remains compact after its closest approach to the black hole. It hasn't been smeared out or torn apart the way a gas cloud likely would be under such a strong gravitational force, they say.

"For us, everything points at it being a young star," said Andreas Eckart, a co-author on the new paper.

The new research paper includes an analysis of data taken by Eckart's group with the SINFONI instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope  (VLT) — the same instrument used by Gillessen and colleagues. The study appears in the Feb. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. 

Eckart and colleagues say their data shows that G2 has passed its point of closest approach to the black hole. Prior to 2014, they measured the gas cloud moving away from Earth. Now it can be seen moving in the direction of Earth, and at a much faster clip: from 6.2 million miles per hour (10 million km/h) on closest approach, to 7.4 million miles per hour (12 million km/h) after.

The group also made a size measurement of G2 based on data taken between 2008 and 2013, and compared it with the size of G2 today.

"If you take that size estimate and assume it's a freely expanding cloud on its orbit, it gets orbitally stretched and we calculated that it would be four times larger along the orbit," he said. "But we see that it's compact."

Gillessen initially predicted that not only would G2 smear out in its closest approach to Sagittarius A*, but some of its matter would fall in and radiate light. But the galactic fireworks never appeared.

The new paper by the Cologne group also includes an independent analysis on publicly available data from both the UCLA group (taken with the Keck telescope in Hawaii) and the Max Planck group. That data comes from before G2 made its close approach to the black hole.

"We don't see any stretching of the cloud that was claimed previously," Eckart said. "We get a much more coherent picture of a single object." [8 Baffling Astronomy Mysteries]

Gillessen's mind has not been changed by the new paper.

Among other things, the Eckart group did not have access to the data taken by his group in 2014, the year of G2's closest approach, Gillessen said in an interview with Space.com. The Eckart group's original data was also taken with shorter integration times, meaning that the researchers looked at the object for a shorter period of time. This was done, according to the Cologne paper, to reduce noise in the images.

But Gillessen said these factors mean that the researchers in the Eckart group are only looking at "the tip of the iceberg," when it comes to G2's physical features. They may not, he said, be seeing the whole picture.

Despite their disagreements, all three of the groups observing G2 belong to a relatively small community of researchers focusing on this strange object at the galactic center. The Cologne group and the Max Planck group are collaborating on a telescope instrument; one of Eckart's former graduate students now belongs to the group at UCLA.

Gillessen said he and his colleagues have more observation time planned for the spring and the summer. The identity of G2 may finally be settled in 2015 — or not.

Monster black hole discovered at cosmic dawn

Scientists have discovered the brightest quasar in the early universe, powered by the most massive black hole yet known at that time. The international team led by astronomers from Peking University in China and from the University of Arizona announce their findings in the scientific journal Nature on Feb. 26.

The discovery of this quasar, named SDSS J0100+2802, marks an important step in understanding how quasars, the most powerful objects in the universe, have evolved from the earliest epoch, only 900 million years after the Big Bang, which is thought to have happened 13.7 billion years ago. The quasar, with its central black hole mass of 12 billion solar masses and the luminosity of 420 trillion suns, is at a distance of 12.8 billion light-years from Earth.

The discovery of this ultraluminous quasar also presents a major puzzle to the theory of black hole growth at early universe, according to Xiaohui Fan, Regents’ Professor of Astronomy at the UA’s Steward Observatory, who co-authored the study.

“How can a quasar so luminous, and a black hole so massive, form so early in the history of the universe, at an era soon after the earliest stars and galaxies have just emerged?” Fan said. “And what is the relationship between this monster black hole and its surrounding environment, including its host galaxy?

“This ultraluminous quasar with its supermassive black hole provides a unique laboratory to the study of the mass assembly and galaxy formation around the most massive black holes in the early universe.”

The quasar dates from a time close to the end of an important cosmic event that astronomers referred to as the “epoch of reionization”: the cosmic dawn when light from the earliest generations of galaxies and quasars is thought to have ended the “cosmic dark ages” and transformed the universe into how we see it today.

Discovered in 1963, quasars are the most powerful objects beyond our Milky Way galaxy, beaming vast amounts of energy across space as the supermassive black hole in their center sucks in matter from its surroundings. Thanks to the new generation of digital sky surveys, astronomers have discovered more than 200,000 quasars, with ages ranging from 0.7 billion years after the Big Bang to today.

Shining with the equivalent of 420 trillion suns, the new quasar is seven times brighter than the most distant quasar known (which is 13 billion years away). It harbors a black hole with mass of 12 billion solar masses, proving it to be the most luminous quasar with the most massive black hole among all the known high redshift (very distant) quasars.

“By comparison, our own Milky Way galaxy has a black hole with a mass of only 4 million solar masses at its center; the black hole that powers this new quasar is 3,000 time heavier,” Fan said.

Feige Wang, a doctoral student from Peking University who is supervised jointly by Fan and Prof. Xue-Bing Wu at Peking University, the study’s lead author, initially spotted this quasar for further study.

“This quasar was first discovered by our 2.4-meter Lijiang Telescope in Yunnan, China, making it the only quasar ever discovered by a 2-meter telescope at such distance, and we’re very proud of it,” Wang said. “The ultraluminous nature of this quasar will allow us to make unprecedented measurements of the temperature, ionization state and metal content of the intergalactic medium at the epoch of reionization.”

Following the initial discovery, two telescopes in southern Arizona did the heavy lifting in determining the distance and mass of the black hole: the 8.4-meter Large Binocular Telescope, or LBT, on Mount Graham and the 6.5-meter Multiple Mirror Telescope, or MMT, on Mount Hopkins. Additional observations with the 6.5-meter Magellan Telescope in Las Campanas Observatory, Chile, and the 8.2-meter Gemini North Telescope in Mauna Kea, Hawaii, confirmed the results.

“This quasar is very unique,” said Xue-Bing Wu, a professor of the Department of Astronomy, School of Physics at Peking University and the associate director of the Kavli Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics. “Just like the brightest lighthouse in the distant universe, its glowing light will help us to probe more about the early universe.”

Wu leads a team that has developed a method to effectively select quasars in the distant universe based on optical and near-infrared photometric data, in particular using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Explorer, or WISE, satellite.

“This is a great accomplishment for the LBT,” said Fan, who chairs the LBT Scientific Advisory Committee and also discovered the previous record holders for the most massive black hole in the early universe, about a fourth of the size of the newly discovered object. “The especially sensitive optical and infrared spectrographs of the LBT provided the early assessment of both the distance of the quasars and the mass of the black hole at the quasar’s center.”

For Christian Veillet, director of the Large Binocular Telescope Observatory, or LBTO, this discovery demonstrates both the power of international collaborations and the benefit of using a variety of facilities spread throughout the world.

“This result is particularly gratifying for LBTO, which is well on its way to full nighttime operations,” Veillet said. “While in this case the authors used two different instruments in series, one for visible light spectroscopy and one for near-infrared imaging, LBTO will soon offer a pair of instruments that can be used simultaneously, effectively doubling the number of observations possible in clear skies and ultimately creating even more exciting science.”

To further unveil the nature of this remarkable quasar, and to shed light on the physical processes that led to the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes, the research team will carry out further investigations on this quasar with more international telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Telescope.

Local UFO investigator: It’s ‘obvious we’re not alone’ (Michigan)

Harry Willnus knows all too well that eyebrows will rise when he talks about unidentified flying objects, but that doesn’t stop the retired social studies teacher from continuing his 60-year quest to see the issue become accepted by the mainstream population.

“UFO sightings are reported every day around the world and in every country around the world,” said the Salem resident and former president of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), the world’s largest investigative body looking into the UFO phenomena.

Willnus, like other UFO enthusiasts ask, “Are we alone in the universe?”

That question will be the focus of his appearance on the Science Channel’s show “Close Encounters.” Now in its second season, Willnus will appear on an upcoming episode scheduled to air at 10 p.m., March 10. Willnus will share his vast knowledge about the highly publicized March 1966 reported UFO sighting in Dexter,. He’ll be on the show again, at 10 p.m., March 31, talking about a reported sighting in Exeter, N. H.

In the March 20, 1966, Dexter case a group of people, including police officers, reported seeing an object turn from a blue green to a brilliant red to a yellow coloring. It rose 500 feet and returned to the ground, one man said.

Trying to investigate further, the officers said they went out to the far edge of the wooded area and also saw a brilliant light appear and then disappear. The officers said when they returned to their patrol vehicle, a group of people had gathered and reported seeing something similar. These witnesses said the object departed in a western direction at a high rate of speed.

Area reports

A UFO investigator, Willnus sat in the living room of his home and retold other stories of what he believes are extraterrestrial visits. Like a sighting by WJR reporter Marc Avery on Feb. 10, 1978. Avery was on his way to the airport on Interstate 275 when he and his wife saw two lights hovering over their car “for 30, 40, 50 seconds.” He called the radio station and spoke on air, describing the aircraft with Warren Pierce. Willnus has the report recorded on his smart phone.

The citing was never debunked, Willnus said. In fact, two men, who were walking in the Merriman Road and Michigan Avenue area later reported they saw a similar aircraft about five minutes before Avery’s report.

The U.S. Air Force investigated UFO sightings from 1947 to 1969, in Project Blue Book, which consisted of 12,618 accounts spanning nearly 130,000 pages, Willnus said. The project was discontinued, however, after a committee formed at the request of President Gerald Ford concluded UFOs weren’t a threat to national security.

Sightings on the rise

Sightings have doubled in the last couple of years, Willnus said.

“This major increase shows there’s something going on,” he said. “It’s driving the interest in the number one question: ‘Are we alone?’ Are there other intelligences out there?

“After studying UFOs, it becomes obvious we are not alone,” Willnus continued. “I base that on the fact that there are 200 sightings every day around the world. There’s pictures, photos and movies. It’s not a hoax when these crafts can disappear before our eyes. Or fly at over 1,000 miles an hour and make a right angle turn – or, stop on a dime.”

Willnus also refers to a case involving former Novi resident Nancy Tremaine, who had described being abducted by a UFO off Orchard Drive near Meadowbrook Road in the 1960s. Former Novi Police Chief Lee BeGole, who spoke to the Novi News last year at age 93, didn’t see the UFO, but he was on duty at the police station the night the incident occurred.

BeGole said an off duty officer told dispatch he saw a strange object overhead and police dispatch took multiple calls from people who said they also saw a strange object in the sky.

If you ask your 10 best friends if they ever had a UFO experience, Willnus said, 10 percent would say, “yes.”

“But, people get laughed at once they say that,” Willnus said. “And then they say, ‘I’m not going to share that again.'”

Not always out of this world

He does note, however, that 90 percent of reported UFOs can be explained by something other than an extraterrestrial visit. The “UFO” might actually be a blimp, a flock of birds flying at night or even the planet, Venus, because it’s the closest to Earth and moves quickly.

“The other 10 percent, we’re not sure what they are,” Willnus added. “I think a good many of those are that we are being visited by intelligent life off the planet Earth. Look at the evidence. The evidence is, overwhelmingly, there is a UFO phenomenon that we don’t understand at this time.

“I’m getting up there and I want this story to break before I pass,” he said. “Some people in the U.S. government are aware we are being visited. This is a cosmic Watergate where there is a cover-up keeping this from people. The best thing that could happen is if governments, including the United States, would come out and say, ‘The UFO phenomenon is real and don’t panic, because they don’t appear to be here to harm us.'”

Explosions of Jupiter’s aurora linked to extraordinary planet-moon interaction

On Earth, bursts of particles spewed by the Sun spark shimmering auroras, like the Northern Lights, that briefly dance at our planet’s poles. But, on Jupiter, there’s an auroral glow all the time, and new observations show that this Jovian display sometimes flares up because of a process having nothing to do with the Sun.

Jupiter watchers have long known that the giant planet’s ever-present polar auroras — thousands of times brighter and many times bigger than Earth — are powered by both electrically charged particles from the Sun colliding with Jupiter’s magnetic field and a separate interaction between Jupiter and one of its many moons, called Io. But there are also auroral explosions on Jupiter, or periods of dazzling brightening, similar to auroral storms on Earth, that no one could definitively trace back to either of those known causes.

In the aurora-making interaction of Jupiter and Io, volcanoes on the small moon blast clouds of electrically charged atoms (ions) and electrons into a region surrounding Jupiter that’s permeated by the planet’s powerful magnetic field, thousands of times stronger than Earth’s. Rotating along with its rapidly spinning planet, the magnetic field drags the material from Io around with it, causing strong electric fields at Jupiter’s poles. The acceleration of the ions and electrons produce intense auroras that shine in almost all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum but most brightly in high-energy bands, like ultraviolet light and X-rays, that are invisible to unaided human eyes.

Now, new observations of the planet’s extreme ultraviolet emissions show that bright explosions of Jupiter’s aurora likely also get kicked off by the planet-moon interaction, not by solar activity. A new scientific paper about these observations by Tomoki Kimura of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), in Sagamihara, Kanagawa, Japan, and his colleagues, was published online today in Geophysical Research Letters, a journal of the American Geophysical Union.

Starting in January 2014, a telescope aboard the JAXA’s Hisaki satellite, which focused on Jupiter for two months, recorded intermittent brightening of the giant planet’s aurora. The telescope detected sudden flare-ups on days when the usual flow of charged particles from the Sun, known as the solar wind, was relatively weak.

Additional space and ground-based telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope, also viewed Jupiter during these lulls in the solar wind. Both Hisaki and Hubble witnessed explosions of the planet’s aurora despite the solar wind’s calm, suggesting that it’s the Jupiter-Io interaction driving these explosions, not charged particles from the Sun, according to the new study. The new research does not address exactly what is happening in the Jovian magnetosphere to cause the temporary brightening of auroral explosions.

Did Mars once have a nitrogen cycle? Scientists find fixed nitrogen in Martian sediments

Javier Martín-Torres, Professor of Atmospheric Science at Luleå University of Technology, is one of several researchers who has found fixed forms of nitrogen in Mars. The research findings are now being published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

“This discovery is a new step in assessing whether Mars is and/or was habitable, since nitrogen is a basic requirement for life as we know it,” says Javier Martín-Torres.

It’s the researchers in the Mars Science Laboratory Mission Science Team, in which Javier Martín-Torres is included, who have discovered the solid forms of nitrogen on Mars.

“The presence of nitrogen-bearing compounds in Martian soil means the existence of a source of biochemically accessible nitrogen, and suggest that it could be a nitrogen cycle sometime along the evolution of Mars as a planet,” he says.

Many findings behind the discovery

The detection has been verified through analyses of samples taken at three different points on Mars. Analyses are made by the instrument SAM (Sample Analysis on Mars) on board the unmanned rover Curiosity located on Mars. Two of the samples come from drilling at a place called Sheepbed mudstone and the third sample is generally believed to be representative of the global Martian dust.

“It has been established that the nitrates, which is a form of nitrogen, comes from fixation of atmospheric diatomic nitrogen in the atmosphere during meteorite impacts, which is consistent with the data that we obtained through the SAM analyses, so this may be the main source of fixed nitrogen on Mars,” says Javier Martín-Torres.

Martin-Torres is also co-author of the scientific manuscripts on the first detection of organics on Mars (published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets) and the first in-situ measurement of methane on the Red Planet, which in 2014 was published in the journal Science.
