Astronomer Douglas Vakoch on SETI’s Search for Alien Life

By proactively transmitting Earth's own messages, scientists look for civilization in space

In 2009, NASA launched the Kepler spacecraft to search for Earth-sized planets orbiting stars in the Orion spiral arm of our galaxy. Of the thousands of stars observed by the spacecraft, an anomaly around the star KIC 8462852 stuck out as particularly intriguing to SETI, the organization for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.

The Kepler pinpoints planets by observing dimming as they travel between their home star and Earth. Planets as large as Jupiter only cause dimming of less than one percent, but with KIC 8462852 astronomers observed dimming at times as high as 22 percent.

“Here’s this anomalous star system showing dimming unlike anything astronomers are used to seeing, and the question is, ‘What’s it being caused by?’” said Douglas Vakoch, Director of Interstellar Message Composition at SETI, in a phone interview with the Observer. Penn State astronomer Jason Wright suggested a large alien megastructure could explain dimming of that magnitude, “but it continues to look like the best explanation is there were fragments of comets that were drawn to the star at just the exact moment the Kepler spacecraft was observing,” added Dr. Vakoch. “That would be a freakish accident if you think in terms of an individual star, because what are the chances we would be looking at the right time and the right place? But it is very conceivable, given Kepler was looking at 100,000 stars.”

‘If there are any aliens, they aren’t making extraordinary efforts to get into contact with us—at least in the ways we’ve been looking.’

To test the hypothesis suggested by Mr. Wright, SETI conducted two separate, simultaneous experiments—one at the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama and the other at the Allen Telescope array system 300 miles northeast of San Francisco, California. In Panama, the end of the rainy season limited observable nights in November to just six. During those six nights, scientists searched the star in question using a 0.5m Newtonian telescope. Neither experiment yielded favorable findings for the possibility of extraterrestrials, but the results of the Panama-based experiment were published on December 8 in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, of which Mr. Vakoch was a lead author.

Despite the findings, Mr. Vakoch explained there is still room for exploration of KIC 8462852. “I would hope people doing research at infrared frequencies would take a look to see if they find anything there,” he said. “But, if there are any aliens there they aren’t making extraordinary efforts to get into contact with us, at least in the ways we’ve been looking.”

With both experiments in Panama and California completed, Mr. Vakoch said this type of coordination was unprecedented, yet critical in preparation for if and when we do receive a signal from an extraterrestrial source.

In Panama, SETI created a new organization called SETI International, with a focus on encouraging similar international collaborations such as the one used in the latest study of this anomalous star. SETI International also facilitates active searches for extraterrestrial life by transmitting intentional messages to other civilizations around the universe with the hope of receiving a response. As these messages represent the entire planet, what they say ignites controversy—which in part inspired the formation of SETI International.

SETI International has an international board of trustees, ranging from astronomers to experts in a range of disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, arts, physical sciences and biology. The organization does not yet have specific dates for transmissions to begin, but components of their three-year strategy include the launch of smaller-scale projects to set the foundation for a sustainable ongoing project that will ultimately last centuries.

Given the vast distances these galaxies are from Earth, a reply during our lifetime is improbable, but the groundwork is being laid so future generations may come into contact with extraterrestrials sooner rather than later. Mr. Vakoch explained the basis for establishing an international version of SETI; “It’s difficult enough to start a passive SETI project (searching for extra-terrestrial transmissions), but how do you sustain the interest in these projects? How do you record what’s been transmitted? We are really grappling with the complexities of archiving the messages that will be sent over time and keeping track of the earliest possible date we could expect a reply.”

UFO spotted 'probing' active volcano is 'proof aliens are monitoring our planet' conspiracy theorists claim

Viewers on YouTube were divided over the footage, with some believing it proved the existence of extra-terrestrial beings

Footage of a strange light moving across the sky during the Christmas period has been the source of much debate since it was shared on social media.

Webcams in Mexico filmed the eerie light moving erratically above the volcano of Popocatepetl which lies in the eastern half of the Trans-Mexican volcanic belt in the centre of the country.

Many social media users were quick to say that they believed it to be a UFO sightingand more proof that extra-terrestrial beings are monitoring our planet.

Some of the more sceptical viewers put it down to the flare of a firework and the YouTube debate got so heated that the author of the video deactivated the comments function.

The supposed UFO was sighted in a part of Mexico where the Popocatepetl volcano is reportedly still active and estimated to be as old as 730,000 years.

Its last eruption dates back to October 7, 2015.

This comes just after a similar sighting near the city of in La Paz in Bolivia, when locals filmed and uploaded what looks like a flying saucer hovering in the sky.

DES SCIENTIFIQUES SE PENCHENT SUR UN OVNI

La Scientific Coalition for Ufology, un think tank nouvellement créé dédié à l'étude des OVNIs, frappe très fort avec sa première publication: un volumineux rapport consacré à un OVNI filmé en 2013 à Porto Rico, par un avion de la sécurité intérieure américaine.

Cette vidéo spectaculaire d’un engin mystérieux qui se déplace aussi bien sous la mer que dans les airs avant de se scinder en deux objets distincts aurait été filmé à Porto Rico en 2013 par un avion de la sécurité intérieure américaine. L’OVNI supposé se déplace à très basse altitude à une vitesse de 120 km/h environ. Il effectue des manœuvres très acrobatiques en frôlant des obstacles avec une précision diabolique. C’est laScientific Coalition for Ufology, (SCU) un nouveau «think tank de scientifiques et de chercheurs»  dédié à l'étude des OVNIs qui aurait obtenu ce film tourné avec une caméra infrarouge le 25 avril 2013 à 21 heures 20 au-dessus de l’aéroport Raphael Hernandez. La présence de l’objet aurait d’ailleurs provoqué le retard de plusieurs vols. 

La SCU a consacré un rapport d’analyse de plus de 160 pages de très haute tenue à cet objet volant. L'organisation est même parvenue à obtenir, par voie légale, un enregistrement radar qui confirme la présence d’un objet survolant l’aéroport quelques minutes avant l’heure indiquée sur la vidéo (Analyse vidéo en anglais ci-dessous de l'enregistrement radar.

Le rapport de la SCU contient de très nombreux éléments troublants, notamment la capacité de l’objet à se déplacer sous la mer à la même vitesse que dans les airs. Grâce à des calculs complexes détaillés dans le document disponible en PDF ici, les auteurs estiment la taille de l’objet à environ 1,5 mètre. Les scientifiques à l’œuvre ont même pu déterminer que l’objet a bien une masse et qu’il ne s’agit pas, par exemple, d’un hologramme. Pour ce faire, ils ont étudié dans le détail les images où l’OVNI entre en contact avec la surface de la mer et modélisé en 3D les projections d’eau.

Les auteurs du rapport se sont aussi intéressés à la chaleur émise par l’OVNI qui semble provenir d’une zone bien distincte mais «qui n’est pas liée à la direction de l’engin. Dans le cas d’un avion classique, l’émission de chaleur se fait dans le sens opposé à sa direction. Rien de tel n’est constaté ici «ce qui élimine la plupart des systèmes de propulsion connus sur Terre». De plus, «l’objet est trop froid pour être un engin à moteur conventionnel et trop chaud par rapport à un ballon sonde ou un sac plastique».

L’objet semble en outre animé, par intermittence, d’un mouvement de rotation sur lui-même. Enfin, aucune technologie connue ne peut expliquer que l’engin se divise en deux  en pénétrant dans l’océan. Après avoir étudié la vidéo image par image (ci-dessous), les auteurs ont écarté la possibilité qu’un second objet se soit joint au premier.

Selon eux, il s’agit bel et bien d’une division en deux parties distinctes qui présentent à peu près les mêmes caractéristiques de chaleur, de vitesse et de forme. 
 En résumé, la publication de cette vidéo et du rapport qui l’accompagne constituent un véritable évènement dans le paysage de l’ufologie. On attend avec impatience les prochains travaux de cette organisation prometteuse.

Strong solar storm to hit Earth before New Year's Eve, northern lights visible in northern states

A massive solar eruption is about to hit Earth, and the resulting northern lights could be spectacular just before New Year's Eve for those in the right latitudes.  NOAA forecasts the aurora borealis will dip clear down to Oregon, with a small chance of even the Bay Area seeing the northern lights.

"It's certainly possible," Terry Onsager, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration told SFGATE.  "It depends entirely on the strength of the storm. If it turns out to be stronger than that, it could be seen."

On Monday, a powerful M1.9 class solar flare erupted from the sun.  The solar phenomenon will hit Earth early in the morning on December 30th, and the effects could linger into New Year's Eve.

NOAA is predicting a strong "G3" class geomagnetic storm.  The rating system classifies the magnetic fields created by these solar events on a scale of G1 to G5.  A G3 storm like what will hit this week can create fluctuations in power grids, cause radio blackouts in the higher latitudes, and even affect GPS reception.  A less common G4 storm would create northern lights visible in California. 

Onsager describes the coronal mass ejection as, "...a chunk of the sun's atmosphere, mainly protons and electrons, that carries a magnetic field."

"The whole earth's magnetic system is embedded in this flowing 'battery,'" said Onsager, "and that is what drives the electric currents around us."

When the electricity hits the upper atmosphere, it glows just like a neon light.

If you're flying early in the morning on December 30th, or live in the northern states, you're likely to see the northern lights between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Wednesday.

NOAA warns: 

The geomagnetic storming watch for 30 December has been upgraded to a G3 (Strong), with a G1 (Minor) storming watch still in effect for 31 December. These watches are in response to consistent WSA-Enlil modeling results and SWPC forecasters' determination that a coronal mass ejection (CME) impact is likely just after mid-UTC day on 30 December with residual CME effects continuing into 31 December. The CME impact may cause a sudden impulse geomagnetic response at Earth, likely resulting in the G3 conditions. The CME was associated with a long-duration M1 flare (R1-Minor radio blackout) that peaked at 1245 UTC (0745 ET) on 28 December, 2015. Keep checking the SWPC website for continued updates.

Australian UFO Sightings Are On The Rise‏

Through the course of 2015 there has been an increase in ufo sightings in Australia.
The start of the year had a great photograph from a government storm watch time lapse camera outside Boonah in southeast Queensland. The disc is a high altitude and an excellent capture and impossible to debunk.

As the year progress there where a couple of excellent captures of orbs in quick succession from separate sources of what I believe is the same craft.
The interesting thing of these two sightings is they are similar to a sighting and capture made by MWV from England.

Sphere like UFO witnessed in Australia

Then as the year progressed there was  amazing footage released of an orb moving across the sky. Then the release in Australia of the DOJO film Australian skies.
I’m always interested in seeing new material and being a Aussie how could I not have a look at this home-grown documentary.

Firstly this film is about Damien Mott from the perspective of Don Meers. Damien is what is described as a photographic contactee who has 300 to 350 ufo events. He recalls from his early childhood being followed by red orbs and witnessed these orbs on dozens of occasions through his lifetime. He has also captured on video and photographed more frequently the bright white orbs we all know.

Daniel travels from his home town Duneedo in New South Wales to southeast Queensland glasshouse mountains and bribe island. A beautiful area. Don Myers director objective is to interview Damien and other witnesses and hopefully have an experience of his own. During the film they do a few night watches for craft  and show some excellent footage taken by Damien.

I made contact with Damien and he was kind enough to issue a statement exclusive to U.I.P

“My interest in the subject of UFOs and the paranormal began back in 1988 after an up close and personal sighting of a glowing red spherical object about 20 ft. above my head. This particular sighting, along with a sighting I had with my step-brothers when I was twelve, launched me into a world of fascination and intrigue with anything related to the phenomenon. Over the past 26 years I have been reading and researching everything and anything that is related to the subject, while sporadically witnessing anomalous lights and even ghost related phenomena at home”. He said.

“I moved to a property in a place called Dunedoo N.S.W. for ten months back in August of 2012. The anomalous action really started to pick up around this time. Soon enough I purchased a camera and began to film the objects that myself and other members of the community were witnessing. People were soon coming in from all over Australia to witness the ‘lights’ for themselves. Journalists from the Sun Herald newspaper also witnessed two lights travelling together across the sky on our property and wrote a story about it. The phenomenon was also witnessed by Presidents of UFO research groups, police officers and pilots. My story appeared on Channel 7 news, Today Tonight (Current Affairs Program), Channel 9’s Today Show live and Sunrise on Channel 7”. 

“After moving to Taree N.S.W. I continued to witness and document strange phenomena. It was during this time that I began to do the lecture and interview circuit in the UFO scene. In 2013 I started up A.A.P.I. (Australian Aerial Phenomena Investigations) to bring together other people who were seeing and filming objects on a semi regular basis. We presently have 8 in the field investigators on the team. Since moving down to Baulkham Hills N.S.W. in April 2014 and upgrading our equipment, we have been very lucky that the phenomena continues to be witnessed by my partner and myself, as well as family and friends. In late 2014, I was approached by the producer of a company called DOJO Media who expressed an interest in making a documentary about what I do and that is how Austr-alien Skies began. This documentary tends to give a bit of a voice to the ‘star chaser’ out there. We do not speculate on what the objects are, but instead share the story and show the evidence and let the viewers make up their own minds. The documentary has just had its Sydney release and it has earned some decent reviews”.

‘NASA hacker’: ‘I found evidence America has space warships’

A hacker who faced a ten year legal battle after allegedly breaking into NASA computers has talked about what he found there.

Gary McKinnon believes he found evidence of a secret American space programme run by the Navy – with what sounds like warships in space.

He reveals all in a long video interview on UFO channel RichPlanet TV saying, ‘I kept going for months and months. I kept thinking, ‘They’re going to close this door’.

McKinnon has spoken out about his finds before, but rarely in such depth.

He says, ‘I used a program called Landsearch, which could search all the files and folders.

‘But I scanned and looked for documents, I found an Excel spreadsheet which said, ‘Non-terrestrial officers’.

Falklands—The Alien War (I)

Former Argentinian Navy SEALs have recently come out of the shadows to disclose not only the gruesome details of the 1982 Falklands war, but also how extraterrestrial forces and aircraft were actively changing the outcome of the battle.

 

UFOs have a history of visiting conflict zones, but we’ve always suspected they do more than just peacefully observe the battlefield. You’ve probably read an earlier article on our page about former high ranking Russian officials disclosing the fact that they simulated a war every time they wanted to summon a UFO.

 

We found this story very interesting (more credible than today’s photoshopped pics or forged videos) so we decided to look for other former officials(from anywhere) involved in such mysterious encounters.

 

That’s how we found out about Gennaro Martino, a former Navy SEAL who was dispatched in the short conflict between Argentina and Great Britain in 1982. He’s 65 now (27 back then) and mysteriously ill with an unknown disease. His relatives believe he’s been somehow poisoned by the secret services because of his knowledge.

As he says, at his age he’s not afraid anymore, so when two of his brothers in arms recently died of different unknown flash diseases, he decided to speak about what he witnessed on the largely unpopulated island during the English siege, before his sickness silences him forever.

 

nfortunately, we simply don’t have the time and space for his whole story, because he remembers everything to the smallest detail, from the point where his team boarded the ship to when he was back into the safety of his home bed.

 

He told this story to a provincial Argentinian magazine, which, of course, only comes out in print. He begins his story with a sort of disclaimer:

 

"You have to understand the complex, complicated situation of our country, our people, even more in that time. We are a patriotic people, and I always thought the government used that against us. We knew we were slaughter lambs, they wanted to get back public support by conquering the island that had no value whatsoever, but the patriotic one.

But we also knew if we didn’t, the people would consider us the traitors and them the good guys. It was a moral hell.”

 

 

Next he tells how they got to the island (which was officially in Great Britain’s possession) and occupied it without any resistance, then waited, he uses the same words, like slaughter lambs, for the British to come and smoke them out. When they did, it was absolute chaos and carnage.

 

There was so much fire from the English that the other Argentinians didn’t notice the ships (UFOs ) or did but thought they were hallucinating cause of the fear, but we both saw them, me and Pero. There were many models,” he remembers, referring to his mate Pedro “Pero” Escalante who recently perished out of unknown causes. “ We were all firing cannon like crazy, but we almost never hit anything, yet when I got home and heard the English death toll, I knew what we’ve seen was real,” he added.

Falklands—The Alien War (II)

Martino describes the British logistic superiority and how the Argentinian artillery completely missed their bombers or fighter planes, but could also clearly see them going down or moving awkwardly.

 

"When we saw a plane flying backwards, Pero and I knew something paranormal was happening because their jets weren’t that good. Then we told the others to stop shooting for preserving ammo.

We didn’t want them to think we were crazy, but they immediately complied, that makes me think they saw it as well but never said anything. Then, you guessed. After we stopped shooting, their planes were still falling.”

 

 

No one took the English losses too seriously because the Argentinian death and wounded toll was far greater, but Gennaro is convinced alien forces were either trying to stop the conflict, or at least balance it out. The third friend and colleague, by the name of Ezequiel Orozco, was located a few hundred meters from them, around a corner made out or rocky terrain.

 

The two decided to go check if he saw something out of the ordinary, because he was facing in another direction.

 

"When I asked him, he looked at Pero, who was very close to him and said ‘Brother, you know me. There’s something else here. I am doubtful anyone will win.’ He was afraid we won’t believe him. But we all calmed down a little after agreeing, and thought we would be shot on site if we left, anyway.”

 

They got back to their position and started returning fire again, but after a while were the only one standing in that area. It made no sense, at least for them personally, to shoot anymore because they knew they wouldn’t do any damage at all and only give away their exact location.

 

“So we just sat there for the whole night and watched the raging sky. Just before the day’s fighting was over, they briefly saw what could only have been the mother ship. As their (the British) planes were landing on the decks, a thing, like the ones in movies, appeared only it had no form.

 

 

We saw it for maybe less than 2 seconds, but we knew it didn’t go anywhere and it was there the whole time. After we couldn’t see it anymore, a chopper and a plane trying to land just fell in the ocean like flies.”

 

That was when it got too scary. They first went to Orozco, who was terrified by that point, after seeing what he described as flying saucers smaller than normal cars, and made up their mind to leave immediately no matter what.

 

His story in the magazine continues, but he says he hasn’t witnessed anything similar ever since, and was even somewhat annoyed by the fact that people expected him to come into contact again with the aliens during his lifetime, saying: “Why should I be chosen for anything? I just saw something people fear, nothing more.”

Australian experiment may have opened the doors to time travel

Using single particles of light, scientists from the University of Queensland, Australia, have shown that a photon can pass through a wormhole to interact with its older self. The quantum experiment was aimed at simulation of time travel by quantum particles.

The Collective Evolution, citing the Nature Communications, which published the findings of the quantum experiment, says the difficulty in time travel lies in the existence of “closed timelike curves” (CTCs). A CTC refers to the line of a material particle in spacetime that is closed, enabling it to return to its starting point. The report says CTCs are used to simulate powerful gravitational fields of the kind produced by a spinning black hole. Based on Albert Einstein’s relativity theory, CTCs can theoretically warp or distort existence to bend space-time back on itself, enabling time travel.

The Scientific American says many physicists find the idea of CTCs “abhorrent, because any macroscopic object travelling through one would inevitably create paradoxes where cause and effect break down.”The Grandfather paradox (what happens if a person travels back into time and kills his grandfather?) is a commonly cited example of such a breakdown. However, in 1991, theorist David Deutsch came out with a model showing that CTC-related paradoxes in time travel could be avoided at the quantum level, or the level of the smallest possible unit of any physical property such as energy or matter. He attributed this to the behavior of fundamental particles, which, according to him, follow not the rules of strict determinism but of probability.

The latest experiment, simulating Deutsch’s CTC model,  has been conducted by University of Queensland physicist Tim Ralph, along with his student Martin Ringbauer. He points out that though the theory of general relativity predicts strange paradoxes (apparent and logical contradictions) in time travel, such paradoxes seem to disappear when time travel is considered at the quantum level.

An increasing number of physicists agree that particles at the quantum level do not follow the rules of classical mechanics but behave in unexpected ways.
