MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

NASA’s Curiosity rover takes image of Alien sphere on Mars

Is is possible that this time, NASA’s very own “Alien” rovers captured on image a sphere, belonging to another civilization? According to the latest images beamed back to Earth it is quite possible.

The object in question is a sphere which seems to be “levitating” off the Martian ground according to ufologists.

According to NASA the image was taken on April 10, 2015 by the rover’s Mast Camera (Mastcam), during the 952nd Martian day, or sol. NASA altered the image, according to NASA’s website, “The color has been approximately white-balanced to resemble how the scene would appear under daytime lighting conditions on Earth.”

This image where the “mysterious Alien sphere” is visible, was taken near mount Sharp.

So what is this mysterious object? Is it possible that this isnt a sphere at all? Is it possible that what we are seeing here is a game of lights, making us believe that this sphere-shaped object is levitating above the ground? Experts in image editing suggest just that. They believe we are seeing a game of shadows created on the red planet. Experts believe that we are seeing two different rocks in the image. The position of these two rocks makes it look as if one “spherical” object is floating while it’s not. That’s the view for experts. Ufologists on the other hand, suggest that we are actually seeing a levitating object in the image. Experts in the field of ufology state that It is not the first time that a discovery like this has been made on the Red Planet. We have seen dozens if not hundreds of images where mysterious unexplained things are seen. Some of these objects defy logic, they cannot be explained rationally as much as skeptics want to debunk them.

Image of the surrounding scenery and the object in question visible at the center of the image

Image of the surrounding scenery and the object in question visible at the center of the image

But just how likely is it that there are Alien “spheres” on the red planet? We have seen several images where mysterious objects are seen in the Martian sky, and while experts and scientists suggest that these objects, seen in the red planet’s sky are just image deformations and dead pixels, Ufologists suggest that these are alien crafts observing our rovers and spacecraft on Mars. If these UFO’s and Spheres do exist on the Red planet… what is their purpose? Where did they originate from? And is it possible that somehow, there is life on the red planet, life that has been present on Mars all the time, right under our nose.

Many researchers believe that there is life on the Red Planet and they stress that we have to look underground, and not on the surface.

So which theory is more likely to be true? What are your thoughts about yet another mysterious image beamed back to Earth by NASA’s Curiosity rover. Is this truly an alien sphere or have we been fooled by lights and shadows on Mars?

For all of those interested, here is the link to the RAW image by NASA.

    Elon Musk: Private Space Entrepreneur

Elon Musk is an entrepreneur best known in space circles for Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX), which became the first private company to ship cargo to the International Space Station in 2012.

A long-time advocate of Mars exploration, Musk has publicly talked about ventures such as building a greenhouse on the Red Planet and more ambitiously, establishing a Mars colony. He also is rethinking transportation concepts through ideas such as the Hyperloop, a proposed high-speed system that would run between major cities.

The South African-born businessman describes himself as "an engineer and entrepreneur who builds and operates companies to solve environmental, social and economic challenges."

Besides his work at SpaceX, Musk is the founder of electric car company Tesla Motors, and is the chair of a solar energy designer/installer called SolarCity.

Musk grew up in South Africa and earned degrees in physics and business from the University of Pennsylvania. His first venture after school was Zip2 Corp., an Internet company that provided software and services for businesses.

"Things were pretty tough in the early going. I didn't have any money — in fact I had negative money [because] I had huge student debts," Musk recalled in a 2003 Stanford lecture.

He showered at a local YMCA and lived in his office, managing to keep expenses very low despite his low revenue stream. "So when we went to VCs [venture capitalists], we could say we had positive cash flow," he said.

After Compaq bought Zip2 for more than $300 million in 1999, Musk turned his attention to online bill payments. That company, later known as PayPal, sold to eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

Musk now had a small fortune in hand, and at the tender age of 30 was looking to put his energies into something new. He began SpaceX in 2002 with ambitious plans to launch a viable, privately funded space company. In the face of naysayers, he doubled down and worked on a business plan.

Musk has repeatedly said that humans must be an interplanetary species to combat the threat of asteroids, and potential human catastrophes such as nuclear war or engineered viruses.

What is blocking us from doing that, Musk wrote in a 2008 Esquire piece, is "the ridiculously recalcitrant problem of big, reusable reliable rockets."

"Somehow we have to ... reduce the cost of human spaceflight by a factor of 100," he added. "That's why I started SpaceX. By no means did I think victory was certain. On the contrary, I thought the chances of success were tiny, but that the goal was important enough to try anyway."

This problem has been one of the themes of Musk's work since starting SpaceX. The first successful rocket the company flew, the Falcon 1, took four tries to get off the ground before a successful test flight in September 2008.

Musk funded SpaceX through his own money at first, and then gained enough experience to attract millions of dollars for NASA to develop his rockets and spacecraft, and to bring cargo to the ISS. He has also received launch contracts from entities such as the U.S. Air Force. [Infographic: How SpaceX's Dragon Space Capsule Works]

The company's track record was a factor in NASA awarding it money to develop the Dragon spacecraft for cargo runs to the International Space Station. Dragon won multiple rounds of funding under NASA's Commercial Crew program and made a world-first docking with the International Space Station in 2012. It is now sending regular shipments of cargo to the station.

SpaceX is now developing a human-rated version of Dragon that is expected to bring astronauts to the orbiting complex around 2018. Like its cargo counterpart, the human-rated Dragon spacecraft received money from NASA for development and is now one of two spacecraft types (along with Boeing's CST-100) in the final stages of funding for human certification.

Dragon is hefted using a heavier rocket called the Falcon 9. Since 2014, SpaceX has attempted to re-use the first stage of the rocket by landing it in various situations. To date, SpaceX has successfully achieved ocean and land-based soft landings of the Falcon 9's first stage. It is also trying to do a pinpoint landing on an automated ocean barge. All attempts so far have been unsuccessful, but the company says it's close; a landing in January 2016 failed because a landing leg strut didn't deploy.

Musk has often said that around 2002, he looked up the schedule for when NASA was supposed to send astronauts there, and was shocked to see there was no timeline. (Today, NASA says it hopes to land astronauts there in the 2030s). That's when, he told Wired, he came up with an idea to do a simple Mars mission "to spur the national will."

"The idea was to send a small greenhouse to the surface of Mars, packed with dehydrated nutrient gel that could be hydrated on landing. You’d wind up with this great photograph of green plants and red background — the first life on Mars, as far as we know, and the farthest that life’s ever traveled," he said.

"It would be a great money shot, plus you’d get a lot of engineering data about what it takes to maintain a little greenhouse and keep plants alive on Mars."

He eventually turned aside from the idea due to financial concerns, but in 2012 he sketched out plans to establish a Mars colony, along with other entities, with 80,000 people living on the Red Planet. (Musk later tweeted he meant to say 80,000 making the journey per year.)

The settlers would live off the land as much as possible, using equipment to generate methane, fertilizer and oxygen from Mars' atmosphere and subsurface water ice. They would arrive using a fully reusable rocket that will be a next generation to the Falcon 9 booster.

Still, the cost for such an ambitious plan would be around $36 billion, Musk told Space.com in 2012.

"Some money has to be spent on establishing a base on Mars. It’s about getting the basic fundamentals in place," Musk said.

"That was true of the English colonies [in the Americas]; it took a significant expense to get things started. But once there are regular Mars flights, you can get the cost down to half a million dollars for someone to move to Mars. Then I think there are enough people who would buy that to have it be a reasonable business case.

THESE EXCERPTS FROM NASA'S APOLLO MISSION TRANSCRIPTS POINT TO EVIDENCE OF ALIEN LIFE

When Americans first landed on the moon back in 1969 (if they did at all), it inspired a wave of excitement about space travel.

Many believed that this excitement would lead to settlements on the moon, which would make mankind an interplanetary species.

    Sadly, that never happened.

Could that be because the first men on the moon weren't alone up there?

It sounds like an outlandish claim, but judging by these NASA transcripts from the Apollo missions, there might be some truth to it.

Here's an excerpt from that mission:

    03 16 44 39 LMP: There’s a strange light down there.

    03 16 h4 45 CDR: Is it a bonfire?

    03 16 24 47 LMP: It might be campfires.

    03 16 h5 03 C5: How does it look?

    This one is especially scary.

    03 08 20 18 IRP: That’s a spectacular crater.

03 08 20 23 CDR: Did you shoot some pictures while you were over there?

03 08 20 25 CMP: No, it’s just going by. We’d better get it later. There will be better times.

03 08 20 42 CMP: Boy, there must be nothing more desolate than to be inside some of these craters, these conical ones.

03 08 20 50 CDR: People that live in there probably never get out.

Some weird stuff was happening on the Apollo 10 mission.

04 06 13 02 LMP: That music even sounds outer-spacy, doesn’t it? You hear that? That whistling sound?

    04 06 13 06 CDR: Yes.

04 06 13 12 CMP: Did you hear that whistling sound, too?

    04 06 13 14 LMP: Yes. Sounds like – you know, outer-space-type music.

    04 06 13 18 CMP: I wonder what it is.

04 12 09 16 CDR: What the hell was that gurgling noise?

    04 12 09 25 LMP: I don’t know. But I’ll tell you, that eerie music is what’s bothering me.

    04 12 09 28 CMP: God damn, I heard it, too.

04 12 09 29 LMP: You know that was funny. That’s just like something from outer space, really. Who’s going to believe it?

04 12 09 34 CMP: Nobody. Shall we tell them about it?

04 12 09 39 LMP: I don’t know. We ought to think about it some.

04 12 09 41 CMP: Did you hear it, Tom?

    04 12 09 42 LMF: Yes, he heard it.

     04 12 09 43 CDR: Yes.

04 12 09 47 LMP: Hell, I just want to get out of this suit.

And what they said during this conversation is more than a little bit freaky.

03 12 22 39 I2_P: Really an interesting one, huh? Got a rugged one right out here with the central peaks.

03 12 23 05: Sure does. Really got a very complex central structure.

03 12 23 08 CR: It’s got one of the biggest central peaks. It’s a very unusual crater. But there are some dark areas in it and Farouk has gone on record saying that they are dikes.

03 12 23 37 CMl: That’s one right down there. Just shows how it dominates the whole photograph. Just an extremely bright crater. Sun angle just isn’t high enough for you to see it here …. Yes, they’re mining it, I think.

Pluto heeft 'drijvende heuvels' - HLN.be

    Bron: CNN

    © NASA.

Unidentified Space Craft in 10 Month Solar Orbit. Feb 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.

    Date of sighting: Feb 2016
    Location of sighting: Earths Orbit

This object is clearly made by intelligent beings. The big question is, is it ours or theirs? Meaning is it a top secret project? Its possible this is the ancient satellite called Dark Knight that has orbited Earth for thousands of years. We really have to wait till Feb 20 to see the results of the radar images. If it belongs to the US, then it makes sense that NASA gave the space station away to Russia to control.

    BPEarthWatch States:

These images were taken by the 230-foot (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif. Each of the 72 frames required 320 seconds of data collection by the Goldstone radar. The observations were made as the object was moving away from Earth. The object's distance from the radar dish increased from 74,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) to 195,000 miles (314,000 kilometers). The resolution is 13 feet (four meters) per pixel. The images span close to eight hours and clearly show an elongated object undergoing roughly one full rotation. The images suggest that the object has a long axis of about 130 feet (40 meters). The radar observations were led by scientists Lance Benner and Marina Brozovic of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Additional Goldstone radar observations are scheduled on February 18, 19 and 20.

UFO Shoots Over Russia, To Slow To Be Meteor, Feb 4, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3431430/UFO-slow-meteorite-spotted-sky-Kemerovo-Russia.html

As you can see in the video below, this UFO is to slow to be  a meteor. It looks like a falling jet on fire, but no reports of lost aircraft were made. If this is not a UFO, then it has to be space junk, probably a spy satellite that governments want to hide from other governments, because it loaded with secrets.
    Scott C. Waring

    News states:

A video shot in Russia has got UFO watchers excited after some claimed it was an alien vehicle plunging into the earth. The video was shot by Russian man Mikhail Litvinov who said he spotted the device leaving a huge plume of gas behind it as it plunged to earth on the outskirts of the central Russian city of Kemerovo. It quickly attracted thousands of views as people debated what it could be, with many pointing out it was too slow to be a meteorite, but producing too much of a gas trail to be an aeroplane. The gas is off-white in colour at the tail end but becomes blacker closer to the object. Speaking to Russian news site Komsomolskaya, Linvinov said: 'From my side I hope it was a shooting star.' Journalists from Russian news site Bloknot contacted Russian airborne forces who said that there were no registered incidents in the skies over Kemerovo at the time involving either crashed craft or meteorites. One online commentator said: 'It was going down so fast I reckon it was a Russian Rouble.' While another observed: 'It is certainly too slow to be a meteorite implying it is mechanical in origin.' One supposed expert pointed out that it was a 'cigar' UFO due to its long thin shape. These are apparently less widely known than 'saucers'. The first well-known UFO sighting occurred in 1947, when businessman Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine high-speed objects near Mount Rainier in Washington while flying his small plane. Arnold estimated the speed of the crescent-shaped objects as several thousand miles per hour and said they moved 'like saucers skipping on water.' This is how the term flying saucer was coined as, in the newspaper report that followed, it was mistakenly stated that the objects were saucer-shaped.

The Dreamy Draw Dam UFO Crash Incident

    ufo-crash

PHOENIX (KSAZ) – In 1947, the valley had become controversial with the reports of a UFO crash at the base of Piestewa Peak, called Squaw Peak Mountain at that time. Many have concluded that the government had undertaken all the necessary measures to hide all evidence of the crash.

One version of the story is outlined in Frank Scully’s book “Behind the Flying Saucers,” (Amazon link) written in 1950. Scully wrote in the book that an alien space saucer crashed in the valley in October 1947. It allegedly bounced, skipped, and landed several miles away in Cave Creek or Paradise Valley.

Another story of the incident was that remains of aliens were recovered, and the U.S. government hauled them away. Dreamy Draw Dam was then apparently constructed over the site to cover the truth of an alien crash.

Open Minds Radio host, Alejandro Rojas, said that he tried to investigate the incident at Dreamy Draw, and all he could find were rumors about the UFO crash. He was able to find one witness who claimed to have spotted something strange either in Dreamy Draw, Paradise Valley, or Cave Creek. Unfortunately, the witness died before Rojas was able to talk to the witness directly.

Rojas, a UFO researcher and journalist, acknowledges that there are several holes in the Dreamy Draw Dam UFO story. The witness apparently has morally offensive character with little credibility. Moreover, Rojas points out that the UFO crash event happened in 1947 while the dam, which was apparently built to hide the crash site, was constructed in 1973 for flood control purposes.

On July 7, 1947, few months before the incident, William Rhodes of Phoenix had taken a UFO picture that was considered as one of the first and one of the best UFO photos ever taken. Rhodes claimed that government agents visited him after the photo was published in the Arizona paper.

According to Rhodes, the agents borrowed the negative and promised to bring it back to him after they made a copy of it. However, the borrowers allegedly had never returned the negatives to him.

Are the two claims a coincidence or stories of real extraterrestrial visitations? Rojas says that when rumors and stories continue to exist for many years, there’s likely a shred of truth on them and finding the truth is likely to persist as well.

Waterwolken ontstaan doordat waterdamp in verzadigde lucht condenseert rondcondensatiekernen.

    cash

The Cash-Landrum Incident: Was a Nuclear Aircraft Involved?

Of all the best-known and often reviewed UFO cases of the last few decades, many would contend that one of the most puzzling had been the Cash-Landrum incident, which occurred near Dayton, Texas on 29 December, 1980.

The story, well known in UFO circles, involved two women: Betty Cash and Vicky Landrum, as well as Vicky’s grandson Colby, all of whom purportedly observed an unusual, very bright source of illumination over a country road on the night in question. After seemingly hovering above the highway for several minutes, the strange object was surrounded by a group of helicopters in tight formation, and removed from the area, according to the witnesses.

Among those seeking to understand the incident, and what the evidence (little though we have) actually entails, researcher Curt Collins has examined the witness testimony in-depth, covering everything from the later developments and health problems reported by the witnesses, to the earliest statements they gave about the object’s shape and appearance, depicted in the image at the outset of this article (the image is an original work produced by Christian P. Lambright, X Desk Publishing, copyright 2013, as featured in Curt Collins’ original article at his site Blue Blurry Lines, which can be viewed here. Also, Curt’s article details a number of other renderings of the object, and I recommend folks visit his site for further background on this case).

Over the years, some have presented this case as one of the best UFO reports of the modern era, rife with details and credible testimony that points strongly toward a physical object seen on the night in question. On the skeptical side of things, it has been argued that this case is yet another crude hoax, and that perhaps the witnesses had gone to great lengths to create the appearance of poor health following the encounter, with hopes of obtaining money in recompense from the U.S. Air Force or some other agency.

Much like Collins has worked to try and do, looking at the case very carefully, I feel that there may still be things we can surmise about this incident, even decades after it occurred, as I recently outlined in an article on the subject. Following its publication online, one reader wrote to me addressing the long-held theory that the object or craft may have been utilizing an experimental propulsion system, perhaps one involving a nuclear engine:

“I’m a bit surprised you didn’t go into NEPA (Nuclear Engine Propulsion Aircraft) at all Micah. Especially when considering the witnesses suffered from radiation exposure combined with their reports of a rocket type exhaust. As I recall, they reported the craft appeared to be having difficulties, which would help to explain the Chinooks.”

As a rather interesting aside, a number of years ago I had actually considered what my reader proposes, which had prompted me to ask researcher Stanton Friedman about his feelings regarding this particular case. As a nuclear physicist who had worked on various projects that explored whether a nuclear engine propulsion craft might be feasible for air or space travel, it had been Friedman’s view that no such manmade technology would likely have existed at the time of the Cash-Landrum incident (that was his opinion, at least). Hence, Friedman felt that the object, whatever it was, “hadn’t been one of ours”, if the object had indeed exhibited any kind of a nuclear power source.

One of the first problems with the NEPA argument is actually an obvious one: despite the long-held assertions about radiation poisoning, there was never any real evidence that nuclear radiation had been found at the site (and further, it should be noted that the precise location of the observation could not be found either). Betty Cash’s vehicle similarly failed to display any convincing evidence of nuclear radiation, despite the likelihood that the vehicle had been the same distance from whatever source might have caused the witnesses to become ill afterward. This was confirmed by researcher John Schuessler, who had examined Cash’s vehicle with a geiger counter during his investigation of the incident.

    Betty Cash (right)

    Betty Cash (right)

While the witnesses certainly displayed symptoms similar to radiation sickness, it had been the problems with finding evidence of nuclear radiation on the vehicle that led researcher Brad Sparks to consider whether the health problems had been the result of something else; he suggested a chemical component, perhaps an aerosol, that may have been present in the environment instead.

However, I find that the ailments that the witnesses described (especially Betty Cash) were also consistent with health problems associated with exposure to a high dose of some variety of ionizing (or perhaps non-ionizing) radiation; since the object was described as extremely bright, infrared or ultraviolet might be possibilities here. Thus, the effects described might somewhat resemble conditions like sun poisoning, resulting in photochemical damage that seems more plausible than chemical reactions or nuclear radiation… especially since no convincing evidence for either of these had been found.

In my original article on the subject, I also presented information on a specific patent for an infra-heat emitter, designed for purpose of the quick inflation of balloons, and perhaps allowing infrared detection for military applications (night training missions, etc). The patent predates the Cash-Landrum incident by several years, and if we were to consider some similar device had been behind the illumination the witnesses observed, it might also account for a source of radiation–perhaps in the infrared or ultraviolet portions of the spectrum–where photochemical effects (i.e. damage to the skin, etc) certainly can occur.

Finally, we should note that a fairly high-energy ionizing source of radiation would have been able to cause effects such as damage to the skin, without resulting in radioactivity being induced in objects nearby. This seems consistent with the lack of radiation noted by Schuessler during his investigation.

In conclusion, perhaps some of the problems we face in understanding what really happened on the night of December 29, 1980 have more to do with inaccuracies and assumptions that are often made about the case, rather than hard facts. In order to make a proper assessment of the events related by Betty Cash and the Landrums, a careful review of the facts is paramount; and even after more than three decades, it may also help us come to new, better-informed conclusions about the case and its implications.

What Ever Happened to the “Flying Saucer” Shaped UFOs?

Beginning in early 1951, Edward J. Ruppelt, a young, witty, and overall promising US Air Force officer, began his service as chief of the USAF’s famous Project Blue Book. Housed within the Air Technical Intelligence Center, Ruppelt and a handful of staff would begin fielding the most credible reports of aerial phenomena which, at the time, were considered a legitimate potential threat to national security: these were, of course, the famous “flying saucers” that had been reported since the summer of 1947.

“UFO,” Ruppelt would later affirm, “is the official term that I created to replace the words ‘flying saucers’.” The reason for this had been rather obvious: in the foreword written by Drunvalo Melchizedek, it was noted that there a handful of “types” of UFO that the USAF documented during the Blue Book years under Ruppelt’s oversight; these were the, Triangular craft, Cigars, Balls of Light, Balls of Flame, and of course, the famous “Flying Saucer”. “The Air Force’s conclusion,” Melchizedek notes, “after about four years of dramatic study was that this phenomenon was not the work of the Russians, not the United States — not anyone from this planet.”

Whether or not the non-terrestrial nature of the alleged craft can indeed be affirmed, it is clear that there had been far more occurring throughout the 1950s—and throughout the decades that would follow, just as well—than most conventional surveys of aviation history would indicate. In equal measure, it can hardly be argued that a number of the sorts of “saucers” and other UFOs that were being reported as humankind coasted along into the Atomic Age were, in fact, of terrestrial origin. Just within the last few years, the release of previously classified documents pertaining to aircraft test flights like the Oxcart program, the CIA’s codename for its project for development of the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft, have shed new light on strange “saucers” seen at high altitudes above the American Southwest… saucers which, obvious though it seems to us today, bore more resemblance then to the advanced jet aircraft most of us are used to seeing today.

    maxresdefault (5)

But that’s not to say that there haven’t been some legitimate reports of UFOs that aren’t so easily ID’d in retrospect, particularly those bearing the now-famous “saucer” shape. Consider the following account, once again sourced from Ruppelt’s own book on the subject:

“Just before noon on March 16, Chief Petty Officer Charles Lewis saw a disk shaped UFO come streaking across the sky and buzz a high flying B-36. Lewis first saw the UFO coming in from the north, lower than the B-36; then he saw it pull up to the big bomber as it got closer. It hovered under the B-36 for an instant, then it went speeding off and disappeared. When the press inquired about the incident, Captain M. A. Nation, commander of the air station, vouched for his chief and added that the base tower operators had seen and reported a UFO to him about ten days before.”

Similar non-air force reports have yielded fruit on occasion in the years that would follow. In my own personal research into UFOs over the last several years, a number of witnesses have described such seemingly-impossible aircraft to me; witnesses that I have come to know quite well in many instances, and whose judgement and credibility have earned my sincerest confidence.

One such report was related to me in the summer of 2013 by an individual named “Betty”. Having formerly worked as a statistician in various branches of the U.S. government throughout the 1980s and 90s, Betty confided to me that she had never been particularly interested in UFOs, and considered herself to be a “skeptic”. This, however, hadn’t caused her to dismiss her own observation of a classic, saucer-shaped aircraft in the early 1970s.

    As Betty describes:

I must have been about 12, my brother Billy (11 months older) was there as well.  We lived in Venice, California at the time, about a mile from the beach.  Anyway, one night, Billy and I were outside playing around.  Suddenly we stopped at a loud engine sound and looked up to see the Goodyear Blimp flying low about a block away, heading west.  We were able to clearly see the advertisement on the side of the blimp.  Later, we stopped again to see the Goodyear Blimp slowly flying by to the east.  Every child in Los Angeles knows the Goodyear Blimp.

Billy and I had resumed our playing when suddenly I heard a vibrating sound coming from the right corner of the house.  I looked up and hovering close to the house was some sort of craft.  Because it was so close to the house I could only see about a 3rd of it’s size (an estimation).  I saw the lights that appeared to go around the craft.  I remember red and white lights, too much time has gone by to remember for sure if there were other colors as well.  As I focused in on the rest of the exposed craft, I could see what appeared to be a “classic” flying saucer of the 1960s.  There were no apparent lights on the upper portion of the craft, it was grayed in its own lighting and from my house and street lamps.  I glanced at Billy who was staring with his mouth open. I looked back at the craft and saw it slightly tilt downward toward us.  I was so excited!   Just then my brother yelled “go get mom!”  I ran inside the living room and yelled at my mother “There’s a UFO!” as she stared at me from the dining room with my oldest brother.  I pivoted there and ran back outside.  By the time I returned to my spot, my mom and older brother were already there.

“Where’d it go!”  I demanded from Billy.  Looking like he was shaken, he said that as soon as I turned to go into the house, the UFO shot out of there in a flash.  It was extremely fast and shot out toward the Venice Pier.  I looked out that way but could only see small orbs of light, much like airplanes from the airport (there are no stars in Los Angeles).

Billy and I were scoffed at and we were left to ponder over what we saw.

The next day my mother told me that in the paper, there were reports of an unusual light seen out over the Venice pier.

Betty’s encounter is like many that have crossed my desk over the years, supplied by clear-minded, sober individuals that, if anything, have maintained very little interest in the UFO subject. And yet, in such instances, the famed, if not archetypal “flying saucer” shape has remained, though perhaps not prevalently.

    saucers

It is indeed funny, in retrospect, the way that so many things that once scared us become relegated to the lunatic fringe; like the drive-in horror movies from decades ago that scared the daylights out of us which, today, we laugh at, and point at the dangling bits of wiggling rubber that make up the monstrosities that once caused us to cower.

Maybe the UFOs are no different, in a sense: the only thing that could have actually been as scary as bug-eyed aliens in saucers from someplace else would have been the once-inevitable conclusion that the USAF had thought they might eventually determine: that the “saucers” had been something of our own making, and belonging to the boys across the pond, who were now waving the bigger stick. That ended up not being the case, of course… but if not Russian, then whose were they?

Even today, the odd disc shaped aircraft are still reported. They appear only sparingly–almost as if just to assert themselves from time to time–or maybe to be taken as some archaic reminder of the kind of weirdness that UFOs “used to be”. Or at least, a reminder of how things were back in the good ol’ days, when the flying saucer craze that swept the nation in the earliest years of the Cold War was still something new, refreshing, enticing, and yes, even scary.

    Molecular Thoughts

Mulder, Scully, Fact & Fiction, Pt.3

The opening paragraph of part-1 of this three-part article began with the following: “Now that the new series of The X-Files is already halfway through its brief return to television, I figured it would be a good time to address an issue that often crops up in conversation. And particularly when I’m lecturing on the “government files” angle of the UFO controversy. Namely, does the real FBI have its very own X-Files department? Well, the short answer is ‘No. It does not.’ That’s not to say, however, that the FBI hasn’t played a significant role in the investigation of the kinds of mysteries that would have Mulder drooling at the mouth and Scully rolling her eyes and shaking her head.”

So far, we’ve addressed the FBI’s files on UFOs in 1947, an alleged UFO crash in 1948, and the Contactee/”Space Brother” controversy that began in the early 1950s. Now, it’s time to move on. Covering the period from 1957 to 1960, we have the FBI’s files on Extra-Sensory Perception, ESP. Of this very interesting document collection, the FBI says: “ESP is considered a perception of information about events beyond what may be discerned through the five physical senses or deduced from past experience or knowledge. This release consists of cross references to ESP found in FBI files from 1957 to 1960. Several of the documents concern William Foos, a proponent of ESP. Others concern claims that ESP could be used in espionage investigations. The FBI found no scientific support for this or other claims and did not pursue the matters raised in these references.”

Predating the more well-known “Remote Viewing” programs of the early 1970s onward, the ESP file shows how, for a while, officialdom got quite excited by the idea of potentially employing psychic 007’s to spy on the likes of the Reds.

    Depositphotos_23772193_m-2015

Without doubt, the weirdest mystery that the FBI found itself involved in during the 1970s was that concerning so-called “cattle mutilations.” The FBI’s file is titled “Animal Mutilation.” The FBI says of this particular dossier: “In the mid-1970s, reports of scattered animal mutilations in western and mid-western states concerned many people. The FBI was asked to investigate, but was unable to do so because of a lack of jurisdiction (except when such mutilations were found on Indian lands). These files consist mainly of press clippings and correspondence concerning the issues between 1974 and 1978.”

Indeed, it’s the correspondence that is particularly notable. The file is filled with New Mexico State Police reports of case after case of very odd – even macabre – cattle mutilations. Many of the incidents occurred in and around the New Mexico town of Dulce – a place with a notorious tie to Ufology. The files tell of animals found dead with their legs broken, as if they had been dropped from significant heights. There are reports of black helicopters skulking around. Aliens, secret bio-warfare operations, satanic cults, and predators all come under the scrutiny of law enforcement officials. To call the reports real-life X-Files would not be wide of the mark. It would be right on it. Now, let’s head on to the 1980s.

    Depositphotos_53547097_m-2015

It’s time to turn our attentions to Jack the Ripper. What on Earth does the world’s most infamous serial-killer have to do with the Bureau? The answer comes from the FBI: “In 1888, a series of unsolved homicides in London, England were attributed to a serial killer called ‘Jack the Ripper.’ In 1988, Supervisory Special Agent John Douglas of the FBI’s National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime performed an analysis of the case for the Cosgrove-Meurer Production Company. This release consists of his analysis.”

Also in 1988, the FBI found itself embroiled in the controversy surrounding the notorious “MJ12 documents.” “Leaked” to certain figures within the UFO research community a handful of years earlier, the supposedly Top Secret documents tell of a UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico in July 1947, and of a highly-classified group tasked with overseeing the matter: Majestic 12. Or, MJ12. Of this file, the FBI tells us: “In 1988, two FBI offices received similar versions of a memo titled ‘Operation Majestic-12…’claiming to be highly classified government document. The memo appeared to be a briefing for newly-elected President Eisenhower on a secret committee created to exploit a recovery of an extra-terrestrial aircraft and cover-up this work from public examination. An Air Force investigation determined the document to be a fake.”

Indeed, a meeting occurred in Washington, D.C. on November 30, 1988 between agents of the FBI and agents of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, in which the FBI was told that the MJ12 documents were a “fabricated hoax.”

And there we have it: probably the closest thing to the fictional X-Files of a certain TV show now making a comeback. You may be interested to know I could have made this article a 4- or even 5-part one, such is the extent of the “weird files” held by the FBI. Those I didn’t touch on include files on sci-fi author Philip K. Dick; Spontaneous Human Combustion; Nicola Tesla; Wilhelm “Orgone” Reich; and rocket-pioneer and Aleister Crowley disciple, Jack Parsons. And, indeed, there may be others, still awaiting declassification.

Mysterious People Who Appeared from Nowhere

History is rife with strange tales of people who have mysteriously vanished from the face of the earth without a trace, but one area that seems to get decidedly less coverage is the various accounts of those who did just the opposite, appearing out of nowhere cloaked in mystery and emanating questions and puzzles around them that have never been satisfactorily answered. Here we have strangers who have stepped out of thin air from another place, perhaps even another time or plane of existence, and have gone on to leave impenetrable mysteries in their wake to this day. Stepping out of blue and into our imagination, these baffling appearances represent a phenomena every bit as perplexing as strange disappearances. Let us journey into the bizarre world of mysterious individuals who seemingly appeared from nowhere.

One of the earliest, most well-known, and indeed bizarre cases of people appearing out of nowhere occurred in the mid-12th century, when two children mysteriously appeared in the sleepy village of Woolpit, in the English county of Suffolk, and went on to become an enduring mystery known as the Green Children of Woolpit. Allegedly one day, two young children, a boy and a girl, suddenly and inexplicably emerged from a deep pit used for trapping the wolves that terrorized the region in those days. If this wasn’t already odd enough, it immediately became apparent that these were no ordinary children, as they both reportedly had skin that was tinted green, and were dressed in strange, unfamiliar clothing made from an unusual fabric that no one recognized. The children seemed to be more or less healthy but somewhat dazed and confused, and when villagers tried to speak to them they spoke a strange, unintelligible language that no one had ever heard before. Not knowing what to do with these enigmatic children, the locals presented them to a wealthy landowner by the name of Sir Richard de Calne, who took them into his care. Things would only get stranger from there.

The children immediately started crying uncontrollably when they arrived at their new caretaker’s house, chattering with each other in their alien tongue but no one could understand a word of what they were saying. When presented with food, the green-skinned children would not eat anything, even though they made it clear that they were quite hungry. Bread, meat, fruit and vegetables were all offered, but everything was refused by the children until they were presented with beans still in their pods, which they ravenously devoured. For several months this was the only food the children would eat, until they gradually began to consume other things such as bread. Tragically, the boy purportedly became increasingly morose and sullen in this new environment, eventually becoming very ill and wasting away until he died. The girl, on the other hand, seemed to adapt reasonably well to the new world she had found herself in, her green pallor gradually dissipated, and she even started picking up the English language. That’s where things got even weirder still.

When she was able to somewhat express herself in English, the girl began to try and explain where they had come from. She claimed that the boy had been her brother and that they had come from a faraway land located deep underground, where the sun never shone, where it was always dark, and where all of the people had green skin; a fantastical place she called St. Martin. When asked how they had arrived at Woolpit, the girl told the mesmerized villagers that she had been out herding cattle with her brother and had followed the animals into a large cavern. As they plunged deeper into the cavern the girl claimed that they had heard a strange sound like bells, which they followed into the uncharted blackness, becoming more and more disoriented until there was a sudden bright shaft of light that had pierced through the gloom and hurt their eyes. When the children had followed the light they exited the cavern, only instead of their homeland before their eyes it had been the bottom of the wolf trap pit they had been found in. It was a bizarre tale to be sure, and nobody was quite sure what to make of it, although there was all manner of speculation. The girl would subsequently go on to live a relatively normal life in the village, adjusting comfortably to her new home, integrating into society well, and even being baptized and eventually getting married.

The story of the Green Children of Woolpit went on to become a popular tale of curiosity and is still much discussed to this day. It is difficult to know what to make of this story, and hard to ascertain just how many elements actually took place and which are mere myths, exaggeration, folktale, fancy, and fairy tale. There have been a wide range of theories proposed for the Green Children’s origins, ranging from the somewhat plausible to the more far-fetched. The enigmatic children have been alternately theorized as being from a parallel dimension, aliens, inhabitants of some hidden subterranean civilization, feral children raised by animals, orphans with arsenic poisoning or malnutrition which made their skin green, or Flemish immigrant refugees fleeing persecution and a battle that had killed their parents. In the end, no one really knows who they were, where they came from, or indeed how much of the story is even based in reality, and so the story of the Green Children of Woolpit has become an enduring mystery that will perhaps never be solved.

    Plaza Mayor, Mexico

Another story similarly rendered muddy and murky by the passage of time and retellings is a strange appearance in Mexico City on October 26, 1593, of a Spanish soldier who seems to have appeared out of thin air after being teleported over vast distances. On the day in question, guards at Mexico City’s Plaza Mayor noticed a dazed looking man walking about in a trance and wearing the uniform of a Philippine soldier. In addition to him being very far from the Philippines, no one could figure out how the intruder could have possibly slipped past the high security of the premises, and the suspicious guards immediately detained him. When the stranger was questioned, he had quite the fantastic story to tell. He claimed that his name was Gil Perez, a soldier and guard at the Governor General in Manila, Philippines, and that on October 23, 1593 had been at his post on high alert following the shocking assassination of governor Don Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas. Exhausted, Perez had allegedly leaned on a wall and closed his eyes for a moment, but when he opened them again he was in an unfamiliar place, surrounded by new sights and smells. Disoriented, Perez nevertheless had dutifully gone back to his guard detail until he realized that his uniform was not the same as the guards around him, which was around when he had been apprehended. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the skeptical Mexican guards did not believe a word of this spectacular tale, and Perez was promptly thrown into prison and accused of being a “servant of the devil.”

Perez languished in prison for months until a ship arrived from the Philippines along with news of the Manilla governor’s assassination, which had until that point been unknown in Mexico. Further corroborating Perez’s story was the testimony of someone on the ship who claimed to know Perez and to have actually seen him on duty on October 23, although it was not known that he had gone to Mexico. Considering that he had been detained since the 26rd of October and that he could not possibly have known of the assassination, since the news had taken months to travel across the ocean by ship, as well as the claims by those on the ship who apparently knew him, the Mexican authorities had no real choice but to grudgingly believe Perez. In light of this information, the Mexican authorities then reportedly released him and allowed him to go home, this time the long way by ship. It is not known if Perez was really who he claimed to be, and indeed it is uncertain just how much of this story is true, if any, or what parts may have been exaggerated or fabricated over retellings, but theories by those who put stock in it include the ideas that he was simply a lying imposter or a deserter, to spontaneous teleportation, interdimensional portals, or even alien abduction.

Similarly bizarre is the tale of a man who allegedly teleported not over space, but seemingly through time itself. The story goes that one evening in June of 1950 a man wearing 19th century clothing was suddenly observed wandering aimlessly about in the middle of a busy intersection in New York City. As the dazed man walked around in aimless circles he was then allegedly hit by a taxi and killed. When the body was examined things became bizarre fairly quickly. The man, estimated as being about 30 years old, was dressed in immaculate clothing and shoes, but they were around a century out of date, right down to shoes that were fastened with old fashioned oversized buckles. The man was also found to have been carrying some rather odd items, including very old banknotes with dates preceding the 1870s, a 5-cent copper token for beer at a saloon no one had ever heard of, a bill for the care of a horse and washing of a carriage from a livery stable that turned out not to exist anywhere, and a letter from Philadelphia dated June 1876. There was also a business card emblazoned with an address and the name Rudolph Fentz.

Armed with a name and address, a Captain Hubert V. Rihm with the NYPD Missing Persons Department then allegedly went about trying to track down the identity of the puzzling stranger and was quickly met with frustration. The address written on the card led to people who had never seen or heard of the man, the name Rudolph Fentz was not listed in the phone book nor were any next of kin, he did not turn up any fingerprint records, and no one by that name had been reported missing. He seemed to not exist. It was almost by chance that the baffled investigator came across a listing for a Rudolf Fenz Jr. in a telephone directory dated 1939. This led Rihm to an elderly lady who claimed to be the widow of Rudolf Fenz Jr., and it was this lady who would tell a story that would make everything even more bizarre.

However, as incredible as this story sounds, there is unfortunately evidence that it is at least partly a fictional account, if not entirely fabricated. Although there have been many articles and books citing the account as a genuine, factual report, it was later found that the first such mention of the Fentz story, which appeared in the 1972 May/June issue of the Journal of Borderland Research, was originally sourced as being from a 1953 book called A Voice from the Gallery, by Ralph M. Holland. It seems that Holland had gotten this particular account from a magazine called Collier’s, in a short story entitled I’m Scared, which was by a science fiction author named Jack Finney. Considering that the story is almost exactly the same as the account so often classified as a real event, it is very likely that the case of Rudolph Fentz is based on pure fiction. It is still an interesting case nevertheless, and illustrates just how muddied the waters can get when trying to determine how credible a particular account is or how closely intertwined with reality it is.

Another case from history which has gained quite a lot of recognition is that of a mysterious young man named Kaspar Hauser. The setting of this account is Nuremberg, Germany, where on 26 May 1828 a young man in his teens who no one recognized suddenly appeared wandering the streets. The seemingly bewildered, confused boy was found to be carrying a letter addressed to a Captain von Wessenig, who was the captain of the 4th squadron of the 6th cavalry regiment. The unknown author of the letter stated that the boy was attained as an infant, taken in, educated at home, and had never left the confines of the house. The letter ended with the statement that the boy wished to be a cavalryman, that his father had been a cavalryman, and Wessenig was given the ultimatum to either “take him in or to hang him.” Another short letter was found that seemed to be from the mother, who called the boy Kaspar and claimed that his true father had been a cavalryman who had died for reasons unspecified. Oddly, both letters seemed to be written in the exact same handwriting.

The lady claimed that a 31-year-old Rudolph Fentz Sr. had mysteriously disappeared while out for his daily walk in 1876, when her husband had been only a child.  At the time, authorities had apparently launched a massive investigation into the disappearance and had turned up no trace of the missing man. He had vanished without a trace. Intrigued by this new information, Rihm then supposedly checked missing person reports from 1876 and found to his astonishment that indeed a Rudolph Fentz had disappeared that year during an early evening walk and was never found, just as the lady had told him. Eerily, the description for Fentz on the day he vanished matched the mystery man’s exactly, right down to the clothes he had been wearing, and the photo included was a dead ringer for the man. Fearing that no one would ever possibly believe him, Rihm was then said to have dropped the odd findings from the official investigation. Over the years the mysterious story of Rudolph Fentz has inspired speculation that he may have been somehow sucked up in some sort of vortex and inadvertently time travelled, and the tale has made the rounds sparking debate for years.

    Kaspar Hauser

Questions posed to the boy and indeed all attempts to communicate with him proved to be frustratingly futile, as the only thing he would say was “I want to be a cavalryman, as my father was” or “Horse!” repeated over and over again. When pressed on anything, he would simply say “Don’t know.” He refused to eat or drink anything except bread and water. He also showed only the most remedial awareness of common everyday rituals such as using money or basic grooming and social skills, and he was only able to read to a very limited degree. The only useful information he seemed to be able to provide was his full name in a childish scrawl on a piece of paper; Kaspar Hauser. Other than that, no one had any idea of who he really was or where he had come from. He was a total enigma.

The first theory as to Kaspar’s origins was that he was some sort of feral child raised among animals out in the wilderness, which would explain his lack of social awareness and limited communication skills. However, as Kaspar began to gain the ability to more fully express himself more light began to be shed upon his mysterious background. He described how he had essentially been raised in a dungeon; a tiny darkened cell not even large enough to stand in, in which he had lived totally alone and slept on a straw bed. His meals were claimed to have been bread and water left for him each morning. He claimed that not once in all of his years growing up did he ever meet his mysterious caretaker, or even another human being for that matter. The boy had never learned to talk or even walk, and had lived his whole life hunched over in that cramped, dank cell with only a few small wooden toys to keep him company. It was not until right before he was released that he had met another person for the first time, who he claimed was a man who did not show his face and had taught him to write his name, stand, and walk. The enigmatic stranger also had apparently taught Kaspar his first words by phonetic repetition and rote memory, “I want to be a cavalryman, as my father was,” the actual meaning of which he could not comprehend at the time.

Such a strange yet undeniably intriguing story soon circulated among the media, and before long Kaspar Hauser was big news all over the world, with people everywhere wondering just who he was. At the time, theories were already swirling, claiming that he was everything from royalty to a flat out liar. In the meantime, Kaspar was taken into the care of a schoolmaster and philosopher by the name of Friedrich Daumer, who further educated him in a wide variety of subjects. Over time, Kaspar adjusted to his new life, but no one was any closer to understanding his murky origins. Indeed, a series of bizarre occurrences would only serve to deepen the mystery surrounding him.

    Kaspar Hauser

On 17 October 1829, Kaspar was found in the cellar with a cut on his forehead after he had failed to show up for his usual lunch. The visibly shaken boy claimed that he had been attacked by a man in a hood, who had sounded exactly like the man who had brought him to Nuremburg and who had threatened him before cutting him with a knife and fleeing. Kaspar then claimed that he had escaped down into the cellar to hide, leaving a trail of blood along the floor as he did so. In the wake of the mysterious attack, Kaspar was moved into the care of a municipal authority by the name of Johann Biberbach for his own safety. It was never found out for certain just who had attacked him, or indeed whether he had merely inflicted the wound on himself. The move would not stop the strange string of events unfolding. After Kapsar had settled into Biberbach’s house, yet another odd incident would occur, when on 3 April 1830 there was a sudden gunshot that rang out from his room. Kaspar was found to be bleeding from a gash on the side of his head, and when pressed on what had happened he claimed that he had been climbing up on a chair to reach some books and had accidentally knocked down a gun hanging on the wall, which had then gone off. Oddly, the cut on his head did not seem have been consistent with a gunshot wound. Kaspar was moved yet again, this time to the house of his next patron, a landowner named Baron von Tucher.

During this time, there were beginning weird rumors that Kaspar was a rather unpleasant, abrasive person to be around. In fact, both Biberbach and von Tucher openly complained that the boy was disagreeable, a habitual liar, and extremely vain, with an exasperated Biberbach once stating that Kaspar was skilled in the “art of dissimulation” and “full of vanity and spite.” Claims such as these started to eat away at the boy’s credibility, and there was increasing speculation that he had faked the knife attack and gunshot perhaps in order to manipulate others into feeling sorry for him. Further evidence of deception would come when a British nobleman named Lord Stanhope took him into custody and spent immense resources trying to investigate Kaspar’s past based on his accounts, but had come up completely empty-handed, leading him to doubt that the boy was telling the whole truth. Yet another caretaker of Kaspar’s named Johann Georg Meyer quickly parted ways with the boy after a strained relationship full of arguments and lies, and he would later proclaim “I had been deceived.” Yet another caretaker by the name of Anselm von Feuerbach would later say of Kaspar “Caspar Hauser is a smart scheming codger, a rogue, a good-for-nothing that ought to be killed.” Not exactly words of praise.

With doubt cast on the veracity of his story, and his credibility unravelling even as speculation boiled on where he had come from or even who he was Kaspar would meet an end that was every bit as mysterious as his life had been. On 14 December 1833, Hauser came home with a deep wound in his chest, and claimed that he had been attacked by a knife-wielding man in Ansbach Court Garden. An investigation would turn up a purse lying in the garden which contained a cryptic note scrawled on a piece of paper which was written in mirror writing in German and rife with grammatical mistakes. The mysterious note read:

"Hauser will be able to tell you quite precisely how I look and from where I am. To save Hauser the effort, I want to tell you myself from where I come _ _ . I come from from _ _ _the Bavarian border _ _On the river _ _ _ _ _I will even tell you the name: M. L. Ö."

It has never been conclusively determined what the message means, who wrote the note, or what role they had to play in Kasper’s fate, if any. Kaspar Hauser would die of the grievous knife wound on 17 December 1833; his death as every bit as weird and mysterious as his life had been, leaving behind the strange note and far more questions than he had ever been able to answer. The headstone of his grave, located in the city cemetery of Ansbach, is testament to his enigmatic origins and life, reading “Here lies Kaspar Hauser, riddle of his time. His birth was unknown, his death mysterious. 1833.” Indeed, the mystery and speculation surrounding the life and death of Kaspar Hauser has shown little sign of waning in the subsequent years, and he has spawned numerous theories about who he could have been and who was responsible for his death.

One popular theory at the time was that Kaspar was in fact the hereditary prince of Baden, and the prince had been switched with another baby before mysteriously appearing 16 years later in Nuremburg as Kaspar Hauser. In this scenario, Kaspar was imprisoned by the Countess of Hochberg so that her sons could be successors to the title in the absence of any surviving male progeny of Charles, Grand Duke of Baden, and indeed it was for this reason that he was surmised to have been ultimately murdered. While this theory has often been thrown about, there is very little evidence to show that this was the case and it has largely been dismissed by historians.

    Memorial statue of Kaspar Hauser

In light of many of the inconsistencies and oddities of Kaspar’s story, there are others who believe that the whole thing was more or less a big scam carried out by Kaspar himself, or that it was merely a tall tale woven by a possibly mentally impaired teenager. There are several issues that cast doubt on Kaspar’s own version of events. One is that when he was found he did not seem to exhibit any of the health issues that one would expect of someone who had lived their whole life in a cramped, subterranean dungeon as claimed. For instance, such a long, uninterrupted period of time in absolute darkness should have most certainly resulted in rickets, yet the records show that Kaspar had no such condition, and in fact he was described as being rather healthy looking with a vibrant complexion. He was also in good physical condition for someone who claimed that they had been unable to stand their whole life and had just learned to walk, and Kaspar was able to run or climb stairs with no particular difficulty. It seems that anyone who had lived under such harsh conditions for their entire life would likely have been paler, sicklier, less physically fit, and indeed far more mentally impaired than Kaspar seemed to be. It has also been pointed out that the letters he had been carrying when he was originally found bore handwriting that was uncannily similar to his own. For these reasons, it is thought that the whole account of his previous life had been a fanciful fiction, that Kaspar was a pathological liar, and that the attacks he had suffered were also lies, with the wounds self-inflicted.

Indeed, in this theory the very knife wound that killed him may have been from Kaspar himself, and he had simply cut himself more deeply than he had intended. Other clues surrounding his death point to this possibility as well. For instance, the handwriting and grammatical mistakes of the note found in the garden from the alleged attacker were similar to Kaspar’s, and the letter had been folded in the same characteristic way that he folded other letters he had written. However, for all of the speculation and theories, to this day no one really knows for sure who Kaspar Hauser was, where he came from, how much of his story was true, or who really killed him and the case continues to be a baffling enigma that puzzles to this day.

Equally baffling is yet another strange account which allegedly took place in 1954 at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan. In July of that year, a Caucasian looking man dressed in a suit stepped off a plane that had originated in Europe and causally made his way to customs. When customs asked him the purpose of his visit, he told them that he was there on business, and had indeed been to Japan several times before for the same reason. In fact, the man was conversant in Japanese, as well as French and Spanish. Indeed, his wallet contained currencies from a few European countries. At this point, he seemed to be just an intelligent, well-travelled business man, and there was no reason to be suspicious. Yet then they asked him where he was from and things got strange.

When asked his country of origin, the man matter-of-factly stated he was from Taured, as if it was the most natural answer in the world. The problem is, there is no such country, and when the suspicious customs officer informed him of this the man looked baffled, presenting his passport and insisting that this was indeed where he was from and that it was a country lying between France and Spain. The official-looking passport was indeed issued from a country called Taured, and held customs stamps from several European countries, as well as three previous stamps from Japan, just as the man had said. The man even had a valid-looking driver’s license from Taured. At this point the enigmatic stranger was starting to arouse suspicion, and he was ushered away for further questioning. He was shown a map of Europe and asked to point out where Taured was, yet he seemed genuinely bewildered when he could not locate it there where he claimed it should have been. The only country that was in the location he indicated was the tiny nation of Andorra, and the frustrated man claimed that it was Andorra was the made-up country and that in its place should be Tuared; a country he claimed had existed for over 1,000 years. The skeptical customs officials asked him where he was headed for work, and when they tried the number that the man provided the company on the other end of the line stated that they had never heard of him. A call to the hotel where he claimed to be staying likewise turned up no evidence that he had ever booked a room there, and furthermore the bank information he gave turned out to be from a bank that no one had ever heard of and which could not be contacted. Baffled authorities decided to book him into a hotel under observation as they tried to figure out what to make of his story, yet the following day the man was nowhere to be found in his room, despite the fact that authorities had been outside the whole night. He had simply vanished. Later, when police went to the airport to retrieve the man’s passport and driver’s license for an investigation, they were found to be mysteriously gone without a trace as well.

It is hard to know what to make of this account. Although it has appeared in many Internet articles, as well as mentioned as a factual account in several books, such as The Directory of Possibilities and Strange But True: Mysterious and Bizarre People, there seems to be a lack of any solid original source to verify it, giving it more the distinct air of an urban legend. Nevertheless, there have been numerous theories posed for who the mysterious stranger could have been, ranging from a time traveler to a visitor from some parallel dimension who had somehow pushed through the veil that separates our realities. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to prove or disprove this amazing story, and it remains a mystery.

Curiously, this would not have been the first case of such a puzzling stranger appearing from a phantom country no one had ever heard of. In an eerily similar case, in 1851 a man calling himself Joseph Vorin was found wandering about a village in the rural German district of Lebas, near the town of Frankfort-on-the-Oder. Thinking he was a vagrant drifter, authorities approached the stranger and asked him where he had come from. The stranger, who appeared to be Caucasian, answered in broken German that he was from a faraway country called Laxaria, which he claimed could be found out over the seas in a region he identified as Sakria, neither of which were real places that anyone had ever heard of. When he was detained and brought to Frankfurt for further questioning, things got more bizarre still. Vorin was found to be unfamiliar with any other European language except German, of which he had only a rudimentary grasp, but he claimed to be a native speaker of two unintelligible languages which he said were called Laxarian and Abramian, with one being the written language of the “Clerical Order of Laxaria” and the other the common language of his people. The stranger was apparently very persuasive, explaining the geography of his country and even his religion, which he called Ispatian, in great detail. Vorin further claimed that he had been searching for his missing brother, but that he had become shipwrecked on his journey and had ended up in Germany. It seems that in the end, the baffled authorities came to the conclusion that he was telling the truth and released him.

In 1905 in Paris, France, another such stranger was apprehended when he tried unsuccessfully to pilfer a loaf of bread from a marketplace. When questioned by police, the man claimed in imperfect French that he was from a country called Lizbia. It was at first thought that he was trying to say “Lisbon,” and a Portuguese translator was brought in to help police further question him in more detail. However, the stranger did not speak a word of Portuguese, and indeed did not seem to even be able to locate the country on a map. The man humored authorities by speaking in what he claimed to be his native language, and although it seemed to follow basic rules of syntax and have its own vocabulary, no one had ever heard of it before and indeed no linguist was able to place it. Unfortunately, the authorities could not do much to keep him, and when he had been sternly warned about attempted theft he was released. This is another case for which it is hard to ascertain the parts which could be true or fabricated, and which will probably always remain a curious puzzle.

So what are we to make of all of this? In these disparate stories of mysterious strangers who have appeared from seemingly nowhere do we have in some instances cases of such oddities as time travel, interdimensional portals and spontaneous teleportation? Is there truly something at work here that goes beyond what we know of our universe, with these people somehow walking the line on the limits of reality, transcending the horizons of what we think we understand of space and time? In other cases, such as that of Kaspar Hauser, do we have a true tale of intrigue or merely the ramblings of a swindling degenerate liar? Is any of this possibly real or is this all just urban legends, tall tales, and exaggeration over time, with some of these people having never really even existed at all? Who were these inscrutable strangers, where did they come from, and what did they want? There is a plentitude of questions raised in cases like these to which we are likely doomed to never know the answers to, with the clues fading into legend and obscurity, vanishing just as surely as these mysterious people allegedly appeared.

The Military is Creating “Cyborg” Soldiers…

The US military is looking at how it can turn “average” soldiers into super cyborgs by building an “implantable neural interface” that will allow direct communication between the human brain and a super computer. This will culminate in a killing machine.

The research is part of the Obama administations BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), which itself is a very dodgy program to begin with, since it entails studying the manipulation of the human brain.

The concept is being developed together with DARPA, a government at the forefront of military technology and warfare. The new interface will be a small sized bio-compatible unit that will enable the user to communicate with a computer using up to a million neurons at a time, which is about one thousand times faster than any current system in existence.

Although this is sure to excite those who have a rather childish Hollywood view and outlook of military and warfare, this concept is extremely dangerous for multiple reasons. Not only does it trivialize the concept of warfare by degrading it to a type of virtual reality game, which will ultimately be waged at the expense of the poor in resource rich countries who cannot defend themselves, but by allowing government affiliated scientists to connect their technology onto the brains of soldiers automatically runs the risk of them manipulating the human brain. Scientists affiliated with secret government projects have a history of engaging in unethical behaviors, as can be found in multiple experiments such as the tests of MKULTRA or the Tuskegee experiment, among others.

Yes, it is true that the BRAIN initiative can be used for good, but these applications will most certainly be used for warfare and selfish government agendas that are not in the public’s best interest, but rather their own.

    ARTICLE ORBS KEN PFEIFER 2-7-16

WASHINGTON STATE HOTBED FOR UFO ACTIVITY

    APRIL 22, 1998  TO  MAY 11, 1998

    1. Snohomish County, WA:  A 16-yr. old male and his mother, located approximately 15-20 miles north of Seattle, witnessed a blue-green object suddenly descend from the sky, hover, and then accelerate to the south-southwest and disappear in that direction at approximately 2120 hrs. (PDT).

    2. Poulsbo, WA:  Larry Swanson, a former federal employee and computer specialist, who resides approximately ¼ mile from the northeast corner of the Bangor Submarine Base, allegedly witnessed a brightly lighted, disc-shaped object glide silently over the center of that military facility at approximately 2122 hrs..  The object tilted somewhat, so the witness was able to see the ventral side of the object quite clearly, he reports.  A computer-generated graphic, provided by the witness, is shown above.

    3. Auburn, WA:  A man out walking his dog witnessed a perfectly circular, blue-green ball of light descend from north to south in the western sky at 2120 hrs. at a very high velocity.

    4. Puyallup, WA:  A man driving to work witnessed a striking blue-green ball of light descending at a 30-35 degree angle from north to south in the western sky at a very high velocity.

    5. Shelton, WA:  A young father witnessed a blue-green ball of light streak across the sky to the west of his location.

    6. Oakville, WA:  A mother and her two sons, driving west on State Route 12, located to the west of Interstate 5, witnessed a “disc shaped” object, imbedded in a cloud of blue-green light, streak from north to south in the western sky.  The object appeared to “follow the contour” of the horizon, dipping down suddenly, and then rising up again during its rapid flight to the south.  The object was reported to generate a peculiar “tail,” which streamed off the aft end of the object for a fleeting instant.  All three witnesses believed they observed three lights on the top of the disc, and three lights on its ventral side, as well.

    7. Steilacoom, WA:  A woman witnessed a blue-green ball of light streak from north to south in the western sky at 2123 hrs.

    8. Vancouver, WA:  A husband and wife witnessed a blue-green ball of light move slowly from north to south in the western sky.  Very peculiar appearance to the object, they reported, with a peculiar looking “mist” surrounding the object.

    9. Portland, OR:  A young musician witnessed a blue-green ball of light move from west to east in the northern sky from his vantage point in the city of Portland, OR.

    10. Vancouver, WA:  A male Ph.D. in computer science, driving north on Interstate 5 witnessed a blue-green ball of light, that seemed to him to descend vertically ahead of his automobile and hover momentarily above the highway.  The witness added that he had experienced some very unusual emotional reactions to the event.

    11. Yakima, WA:  A law enforcement officer witnessed a blue-green ball of light moving at a very high velocity from south to north for approximately 2 seconds.  During his sighting, the object suddenly changed its color from green to red. The sighting occurred at 2130 hrs., the witness thought.

Scientists Successfully Decode Thoughts, Reading Individuals’ Minds in Real-Time

Subjects viewed a random sequence of images of faces and houses and were asked to look for an inverted house like the one at bottom left. "That was a distractor," Jeff Ojemann said. "We were interested in what the brain was doing at the other times."
    PLOS
    IN BRIEF

Using electrodes implanted in epilepsy patients, scientists have decoded brain signals at nearly the speed of perception with better than 95 percent accuracy.

    GETTING INSIDE YOUR HEAD

Mind-reading is often dismissed as nothing more than a charlatan trick, but scientists and researchers are trying to change this ‘decoding of the brain’ from quack-science to hard science.

Indeed, significant advancements have been made in this area already. And now, University of Washington scientists have developed technology that allows a device to effectively read your mind.

With a combination of brain implants and sophisticated software, the team was able to interpret their subjects’ thoughts and extrapolate what their subjects were seeing. Thanks to this study, scientists were able to gain insight into how people are able to translate sensory information from an image into something our minds can comprehend.

In their work, which was published in PLOS Computational Biology, the researchers implanted electrodes for a week in seven epilepsy patients. The electrodes were initially implanted to determine where the seizures were originating, but the scientists saw an opportunity to use them to gather data for research (with patients’ permission, of course).

“We were trying to understand, first, how the human brain perceives objects in the temporal lobe, and second, how one could use a computer to extract and predict what someone is seeing in real time?” explained Rajesh Rao, one of the lead authors, in their press release.

    UNDERSTANDING YOUR THOUGHTS
    Source: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.1004660

    Source: 10.1371/journal.pcbi.1004660

With electrodes in their brains, patients were shown a random sequence of images varying from human faces, houses, and empty gray screens in brief 400 millisecond intervals. The patients were instructed to look out for an image of an upside-down house.

Data was gathered during this time period from the electrodes. This data reflected what is called
“event related potentials,” the massive inflow of neurons lighting up after seeing the image, and “broadband spectral changes,” lingering signals after the image was seen.

A computer sampled and digitized the incoming data at a rate of 1,000 times per second, which enabled it to figure out the correlation between the images seen by the patients and the electrode location. Using this data, it was able to distinguish which location is more sensitive to an image of a face and that of a house. This data was used to train the software.

Another set of images, both containing houses and faces, that weren’t shown in the earlier sequences was then shown to the patients. The computer was able to interpret the incoming brain signals in the data and determine what image the subject was then viewing with a 96 percent accuracy—despite a lack of prior exposure to these new picture.

It accomplished all that within 20 milliseconds from the arrival of the data, or almost at the speed of perception itself.

What is more interesting is that the software was only able to accomplish this when it analyzed the signals using both event-related potentials and broadband spectral changes, suggesting that impulses across the region (and not only from the neurons in question) is important to how a person perceives an object.

This research is significant, as scientists are currently trying to map our brains. In the end, brain mapping could identify how various neurons, and their locations, relate to how we process our information and ultimately improve our understanding of how neurological diseases affect us.

The Mystery of Pluto’s “Floating Hills” Solved: They’re Icebergs!

    IN BRIEF

A new image from NASA’s New Horizons mission shows the existence of “icebergs” on Pluto, hills of water ice floating in glaciers of denser nitrogen ice. It is but another of many fascinating discoveries returned by this fruitful mission.

    WATER ICE AND NITROGEN ICE

NASA’s New Horizons mission keeps astonishing us with new images and new revelations about the mysterious, demoted dwarf planet, Pluto.

The most recent discovery is this little gem: Pluto has hills and small mountains that literally float across its surface.  It’s weird and unearthly, but we’re dealing, after all, with a very alien world on the outskirts of the Solar System.

And things are bound to get even weirder.

The newly discovered hills are mostly small, typically a few kilometers across, and were discovered in the immense frozen ocean of the so-called “Sputnik Planum,” which represents the western lobe of the famous heart-shaped Tombaugh Regio, the most prominent feature on Pluto.

It seems these hills are composed of familiar water ice (so they really are icebergs, just like their terrestrial counterparts); since water ice is less dense than nitrogen ice, these hills are literally bobbing in a vast glacier or frozen ocean of nitrogen.

The ice-hills themselves appear to be fragments of the water-ice uplands that ring the smooth Sputnik Planum, and they have apparently broken off and been swept away by the nitrogen glaciers, just like any iceberg in Earth’s Arctic or Antarctic oceans.

    THE CELLULAR TERRAIN

Once afloat in the midst of Sputnik Planum, the ice-hills fall under the sway of the strange forces at work in the vast nitrogen ice glacier.  The so-called “cellular terrain” in the central regions of the glacier result from the slow, aeon-spanning convective forces of the nitrogen ice; the ice-hills are caught up in these convective cells, and pushed to their edges, forming small clusters or chains in some cases up to 20 kilometers (12 miles) long.

An unusually large concentration of these “icebergs” was found in a feature called Challenger Colles (“the Challenger hills,” named after the ill-fated Space Shuttle).  The feature (seen at the top of the image), with dimensions of 60 by 35 kilometers (37 by 22 miles), seems to represent a kind of “reef” or shallows where a large number of the ice-hills accumulated and “ran aground.”

The discovery of icebergs on Pluto seems to provide a familiar reference-point and link to the geology, hydrology, and other forces at work on Earth; but, once we look into things a little more closely, we understand just how truly alien this distant member of our Solar System really is.

So far, we’ve found Pluto to have nitrogen ice glaciers, ice volcanoes, floating mountains, and a layered atmosphere full of strange hydrocarbon molecules.  Now if we could just find evidence of a strange, thoroughly non-terrestrial life
