The 2 Most Dangerous Numbers in The Universe are Threatening the End of Physics
CERN has stated that the LHCb experiment had discovered the presence of two new baryon subatomic particles. A deeply worrying and controversial line of thinking has emerged within the physics community. It's the idea that we are reaching the utter limit of what we can understand about the world around us through science. "The next few years may tell us whether we'll be capable of continuing to increase our understanding of nature or whether maybe, for the first time in the history of science, we could be facing questions that we cannot answer," Harry Cliff, a particle physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research — better known as CERN — said in a latest TED talk in Geneva, Switzerland.
Equally scary is the reason for this imminent limit, which Cliff says is because "the laws of physics forbid it." At the core of Cliff's argument are what he calls the two most dangerous numbers in the cosmos. These numbers are accountable for all the matter, structure, and life that we witness across the cosmos. And if these two numbers were even somewhat different, says Cliff, the cosmos would be an empty, lifeless place.
Dangerous No. 1: The strength of the Higgs field
The first dangerous number on Cliff's list is a value that signifies the strength of what physicists call the Higgs field, an unseen energy field not completely unlike other magnetic fields that permeates the cosmos. As particles swim through the Higgs field, they gain mass to ultimately become the protons, neutrons, and electrons comprising all of the atoms that make up you, me, and everything we see around us. Without it, we wouldn't be here. We know with near certainty that the Higgs field exists because of a revolutionary finding in 2012, when CERN physicists discovered a new elementary particle called the Higgs boson. According to theory, you can't have a Higgs boson without a Higgs field. But there's something enigmatic about the Higgs field that continues to perturb physicists like Cliff. According to Einstein's theory of general relativity and the theory of quantum mechanics — the two theories in physics that drive our understanding of the cosmos on incredibly large and extremely small scales — the Higgs field should be performing one of two tasks, says Cliff. Either it should be turned off, meaning it would have a strength value of zero and wouldn't be working to give particles mass, or it should be turned on, and, as the theory goes, this "on value" is "absolutely enormous," Cliff says. But neither of those two scenarios are what physicists observe. "In reality, the Higgs field is just slightly on," says Cliff. "It's not zero, but it's ten-thousand-trillion times weaker than it's fully on value — a bit like a light switch that got stuck just before the 'off' position. And this value is crucial. If it were a tiny bit different, then there would be no physical structure in the universe." Why the strength of the Higgs field is so absurdly weak defies understanding. Physicists hope to find an answer to this question by discovering brand-new particles at the recently upgraded particle accelerator at CERN. So far, though, they're still hunting.
Dangerous No. 2: The strength of dark energy

The area shown is approximately 300 million light-years across. Cliff's second dangerous number doubles as what physicists have called "the worst theoretical prediction in the history of physics." This dangerous number deals in the depths of deep space and a mind-meltingly complex phenomenon called dark energy. Dark energy, a repulsive force that's accountable for the accelerating expansion of our universe, was first measured in 1998. Still, "we don't know what dark energy is," Cliff admits. "But the best idea is that it's the energy of empty space itself — the energy of the vacuum." If this is true, you should be capable of summing up all the energy of empty space to get a value demonstrating the strength of dark energy. And though theoretical physicists have done so, there's one gigantic problem with their answer: "Dark energy should be 10120 times stronger than the value we detect from astronomy," Cliff said. "This is a number so mind-bogglingly enormous that it's impossible to get your head around ... this number is greater than any number in astronomy — it's a thousand-trillion-trillion-trillion times bigger than the number of atoms in the cosmos. That's a pretty bad prediction." On the bright side, we're lucky that dark energy is smaller than theorists forecast. If it followed our theoretical models, then the repulsive force of dark energy would be so enormous that it would literally rip our universe apart. The fundamental forces that bind atoms together would be powerless against it and nothing could ever form — galaxies, stars, planets, and life as we know it would not exist. On the other hand, it's tremendously frustrating that we can't use our present theories of the cosmos to develop a better measurement of dark energy that agrees with existing observations. Even better than improving our theories would be to find a way that we can understand why the strength of dark energy and the Higgs field is what it is.
Getting answers could be impossible
Cliff said there is one likely way to get some answers, but we might never have the ability to prove it. If we could somehow confirm that our cosmos is just one in a vast multiverse of billions of other cosmoses, then "suddenly we can understand the weirdly fine-tuned values of these two dangerous numbers [because] in most of the multiverse dark energy is so strong that the cosmos gets torn apart, or the Higgs field is so weak that no atoms can form," Cliff said. To prove this, physicists need to find new particles that would uphold drastic theories like string theory, which predicts the presence of a multiverse. Right now, there's only one place in the world that could perhaps produce these particles, if they exist, and that's the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. And physicists only have two to three years before CERN shuts the LHC down for upgrades. If we haven't found anything by then, Cliff said, it could signal the beginning of the end.
"We may be entering a new era in physics. An era where there are weird features in the universe that we cannot explain. An era where we have hints that we live in a multiverse that lies frustratingly beyond our reach. An era where we will never be able to answer the question why is there something rather than nothing."

The astronauts who flew the dress rehearsal for the first lunar landing reported hearing mysterious “outer space-type music” while flying behind the moon in May 1969.
The case of the odd, unexplained whistling noise is uncovered during an upcoming episode of the Science Channel series, “NASA’s Unexplained Files.”The episode focuses on a strange event experienced by the crew members of Apollo 10, a mission which flew to the moon, entered lunar orbit and got within 5,000 feet of the moon’s surface in preparation for Apollo 11’s historic flight two months later.
The Apollo 10 astronauts – Tom Stafford, John Young and Eugene Cernan – can be heard on recordings from the flight talking about the strange sound, and whether to tell NASA about it.
“It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music,” one of the astronauts says.
“Shall we tell [NASA] about it?” an astronaut asks.
“I don’t know,” another replies. “We ought to think about it.”
There’s no record of the astronauts discussing the noise with NASA or with the public. It’s unclear if the astronauts ever heard the noise on subsequent passes on the far side of the moon or if other astronauts on subsequent missions heard the sound. Young eventually flew back to the moon and walked on it as the commander of Apollo 16. Cernan commanded the Apollo 17 mission and was the last man to walk on the moon. Stafford flew in space again, but never journeyed back to the moon.
The May 1969 tapes were recorded while Stafford, Young and Cernan were on the far side of the moon, out of radio communication with Earth. The whistling sound lasted nearly the entire hour the astronauts were out of touch. Later, the recordings were sent back to Mission Control where they were transcribed, archived and classified, per protocol.
The conversation was eventually unearthed in 2008.
Some technicians have speculated the sound may have originated from interference from VHF radios on the command module and lunar module interacting with each other, according to researcher and author Andrew Chaikin.
But not everyone buys that explanation.
“The Apollo 10 crew is very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing,” Apollo 15 Command Module Pilot Al Worden said in a clip from the episode. “Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there.”

"Been there, done that." President Barack Obama famously used that line to help shift the world's attention from the moon to Mars as a space destination in recent years, though the debate on where to go next continues. But whether humanity wants to colonize the moon or terraform Mars, establishing a settlement on other celestial bodies is a challenge of immense scale.
So a more important question to ask is this: What does it take to establish a permanent human presence outside of Earth?
Beyond the usual suspects
This question presents a great diversity of challenges that transcend disciplines. It goes beyond the realm of science and engineering, the two fields often considered the core of space exploration, and include politics, law, architecture, business and design. Extending a human presence beyond the planet will depend on diversifying the space community to include broader interests and perspectives.
Already, a number of institutions collectively foster a multidisciplinary environment within the space industry. The Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA) in the University of Houston offers the world's only master of science program in space architecture. Other institutions educate students about space law and policy, including the George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, D.C., and Rice University's Baker Institute for Public Policy in Houston.
These unique programs equip their students with specialized knowledge and skills for the field of space travel. The real value, however, is in bringing new perspectives to the ever-growing space industry. [Moon Base Visions: How to Build a Lunar Colony (Photos )]
Currently, most of those disciplines are functionally independent. Rarely do politicians talk about the architecture of space vehicles, or scientists talk about the potential of space business. But in reality, those fields are so intertwined that interdisciplinary fusion can be a real game-changer.
The space industry should focus not merely on diversification, but also on the process by which diverse disciplines interact. It is time to take a more transparent, integrative and interdisciplinary approach to space exploration.
One method for integrating disciplines, called the integrated design approach (IDA), has proven effective in sustainable design and could provide the same benefits for space.
Lessons from an HVAC
Traditionally, designers have used a linear process to construct sustainable buildings. Architects make sketches and pass them on to the engineers, who evaluate the designs and then assign subcontractors, and so on. However, with that approach, time and money are already running out by the time conflicts and problems arise.
IDA is successful because it involves all project members from the beginning, allowing them to identify and resolve potential conflicts earlier in the process. And the multidisciplinary environment forces project members to think outside their immediate areas of expertise, inspiring innovative solutions to problems and generally producing more energy-efficient and cost-effective results.
For example, in the book "Integrative Design Guide to Green Building" (John Wiley and Sons Ltd, 2009), the authors present real-life situations in which IDA led to a surprisingly efficient outcome. The book was written by 7group, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to sustainability and regeneration, and Bill Reed, a proponent and practitioner of sustainability and regeneration.
In the example, a team of architects, landscape designers and engineers was determining the placement of an HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system in an office building, and the architect asked the mechanical engineer to provide an answer. The engineer was stunned, at first. Even though he had more than 20 years of experience designing HVAC systems, never in his life had anyone asked him where to locate one. After a few minutes, he provided a solution that turned out to be extremely efficient and cost-effective. Instead of placing the necessary mechanical room on the roof, which the architects had done in the last project, the engineer proposed placing heat-pump units on the ground floor of the building. Not only did this solution reduce the piping work and save $40,000 in construction costs, it also led to simplified maintenance and significant operational savings.
From that experience, the team realized the importance of questioning assumptions. All components of a building are interdependent, and therefore everyone's input should be respected — not only individuals within one's own area of expertise, but also everyone else in a team.
Innovative solutions or strategies often come from unexpected sources, and in this example, the multidisciplinary environment was critical to promoting openness and stimulating everyone's creativity.

Finding transparency (literally)
The work of Danish architects in the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) provides another illustration. In 2009, the Urban Planning Department of Tallinn, Estonia, and the Union of Estonian Architects held an international competition for a new town hall in in Tallinn. Throughout the design process, the BIG architects received input from the jury about the citizens’ needs and take into account of the city’s governance system. The design had to be flexible and accommodate unexpected demands.
The BIG group's solution was simple yet quite novel; it was to increase the transparency between the citizens and politicians, to improve governance and the town's participatory democracy.
The BIG town hall design has myriad glass windows and an open structure, offering the politicians daylight and a view of the city marketplace, and offering the town's citizens a chance to see their elected officials at work.
Although the mayor of Tallinn had expressed his hope to build a new city hall, the proposal still remains a mere design, albeit one that shows the effectiveness of integrated design. Here, the architects not only provided a great working space for politicians, but also unified the city as a whole.
Space habitation is not just space travel
Space infrastructures are, in essence, organic systems. They need to be more self-sustaining than any regenerative and sustainable green buildings on Earth. And because of the constrained living conditions they present, such buildings must include input from the astronauts and travelers who might use them, and the input from a range of designers, engineers and others.
For example, the habitation modules of the International Space Station must address energy and thermal balance, waste management, mechanical structure, and architecture, in addition to comfort and privacy, among other factors.
The Habitation Design Center in NASA's Johnson Space Center often invites astronauts as consultants to improve module designs and make them more human-centered. It may seem obvious, but it is crucial that space vehicles be designed with feedback from astronauts, instead of becoming function-based machines like fighter planes. Rarely does one see inhabitants involved in the design process of an Earth-bound structure.
For missions, like space colonization, of a larger scale, the IDA approach is even more necessary. Settling on a celestial body is far different from simply going there. To establish a sustainable living space in such a hostile environment, one needs to not only think about science and engineering, but also consider psychological, architectural, societal, political and economic aspects.

For most of human history, the moon was largely a mystery. It spawned awe and fear and to this day is the source of myth and legend. But today we know a lot about our favorite natural satellite. Do you?
Targeting the moon
Today, many of the world's space agencies have expressed interest in sending humans to the moon. Johann-Dietrich Woerner, the director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), has been pushing his vision to establish a moon village. Although the agency has yet to officially approve that plan, his message has gone global.
Despite the hint of novelty it carries, the concept of lunar colonization existed long before the Apollo era. Numerous books and papers have presented promising plans for a lunar colony, but none have been realized, or even attempted. One of the fundamental obstacles is financial. Even if the moon village concept succeeded, most taxpayers would not understand why it was worth the cost.
And yet, the moon has the potential to help humanity grow as a species. A lunar colony could be a model for a sustainable ecosystem, a testing ground to strengthen international collaboration, a giant laboratory for cutting-edge scientific experiments and technological innovation, a platform for new businesses, a stepping-stone for further exploration of the solar system, and a mental exercise for challenging norms.
But if humanity is to establish a lunar colony, the world must employ IDA, involving all key players at the start.
Space horizons 2016: international city on the moon
Over the weekend of Feb. 19 to 21, Brown University in Rhode Island will host Space Horizons 2016, a student-focused, three-day integrative workshop that brings students and professionals from all disciplines to conceptualize an international lunar city.
The event will consist of four workshops — Politics, Infrastructure, Science, and Business & Technology — that will ask several questions: What would politically motivate participating countries? What is the economic value of a lunar city, and what commercial opportunities can sustain the lunar economy? What new experiments would emerge on a lunar base, and how would they help humanity live on the moon and beyond? What infrastructure is required to sustain a lunar ecosystem?
Through the integrated-design approach, participants will be encouraged to think beyond their immediate expertise, and to recognize the connections between their skills and the space industry, making space more tangible to everybody. Each workshop will have experienced mentors and professionals, including representatives from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Lunar and Planetary Institute, PoliSpace, Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture, Masten Space Systems, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brown University, Yale University in New Jersey, the University of Central Florida and the Rhode Island School of Design. Ultimately, the findings may lead to a joint project or publication.
But Space Horizons 2016 is not the first to take on the moon village concept. At the end of last year, ESA European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) hosted "The Moon Village Workshop", which took place in conjunction with International Symposium on Moon 2020-2030. The workshop invited professionals and students from all over the world to discuss and propose ideas to consolidate visions for the moon village concept. The participants were split into three groups: Moon Habitat Design, Science and Technology Potential in the Moon Village, and Engaging Stakeholders.
The three working groups came up with several recommended actions to be taken by the director general of ESA, including the design and operations of a moon-base simulation at the European Astronaut Centre and the engagement of the most direct stakeholders, such as media, national governments and citizens, at the next ESA Ministerial Council Meeting.
It takes time for educational strategies to prove their effectiveness. And as long as the moon village concept remains a vision, it will be challenging to involve people from nonspace industries, especially in an era in which the space industry is generally considered exclusive to rocket scientists.
However, the future of space exploration is in widening the community. Most innovative ideas are the products of interdisciplinary fusions. Just as much as technological advancements will accelerate space exploration, broader interests and perspectives will also catalyze the process of establishing space colonies. The integrated-design approach has the potential to not only open up new perspectives, but also offer a younger generation an opportunity to design the future of space exploration and radically change humanity's perception of space. It is those people who will advance society into the universe.

FORMER secret documents detailing a series of strange encounters with UFOs and aliens have been released by the CIA.

The files, which date back to the 1950s, contain extraordinary witness accounts of extraterrestrials landing on earth.
One document from 1952 is a sworn testimony by former mayor of German town Gleimershausen, Oscar Linke.

He told how he and 11-year-old daughter Gabriella came into contact with two men in "shiny metallic clothing" and a large object resembling "a huge frying pan".
He described how one of the men had a "lamp" on the front part of his body which "lit up at regular intervals".
In the document Linke recounted the moment his daughter called on him from several metres behind which disturbed the two men.
He said the strange pair then climbed into the object which turned from green to red and began to "glitter" and "hum".
It then reportedly began to "rise slowly from the ground and rotate like a toy" before it disappeared "over the heights and forests".
Linke admitted he would have thought he and his daughter were "dreaming" if not for what happened next.
He explained: "When the object had disappeared, I went to the place where it had been.
"I found a circular opening in the ground and it was quite evident that it was freshly dug."
The file contains accounts from several others living in the area at the time who also reported seeing a similar comet-like object.
Another document from the same year tells of "two fiery disks" sighted in the southern part of the Belgian Congo in the Elisabethville district, now known as Lubumbashi.
According to the report, the disks "glided in elegant curves and changed their position many times" giving off a "penetrating hissing and buzzing sound".
Airman Commander Pierre attempted to pursue the objects in a fighter plane and came within around 120m of one of the discs.

Pierre sketched an outline of what he saw
He described the outer rim of the UFO as "veiled in fire" with "an enormous speed of rotation".
The account explained: "Pierre did not regard it possible that the disc could be manned, since the irregular speed as well as the heat wiuld make it impossible for a person to stay inside the stable core."
He estimated their speed to be around 900mph.
One more report from May of 1952 tells of a mysterious flying object emitting flashing light over Barcelona.
The journalist who spotted it, Valentin Garcia, said: "The newspaper office was soon flooded with telephone calls from people who had seen the object."
The following month other witness accounts describe similar incidents over Meknes, Taourirt and Casblanca in Morocco and Algiers in Tunisia.

He describes how he spotted two men in “shiny metallic clothing” – one of them with a glowing lamp on his body.

Both glided in “elegant curves” said an eyewitness, before coming to a stop mid-air and taking off in a zig-zag fashion.
Commander Pierre, who flew after them from an airfield in Elisabethville - today called Lubumbashi, sketched them.
And the airman – who is described as a "dependable officer" – predicted their speed to be approximately 900mph.

One more account from May of that year describes a strange object soaring over Barcelona emitting flashes of light.
The journalist who saw it, Valentin Garcia, said: "The newspaper office was soon flooded with telephone calls from people who had seen the object."
Further sightings from different witnesses the following month describe similar encounters over Algiers in Tunisia, and Meknes, Taourirt and Casblanca in Morocco.

Vorige week publiceerden wij een artikel met daarin opnamen van twee planeten nabij de zon genomen vanuit een vliegtuig en die na onderzoek echt bleken te zijn.
Afgelopen zaterdag vloog er een landgenoot van Innsbruck in Oostenrijk naar Rotterdam en ook hij zag en filmde een aantal planeten rondom de zon.
Alleen al in dit nog prille jaar zijn er inmiddels talloze opnames gemaakt van één of meerdere planeten zichtbaar naast en rondom de zon.
Uiteraard zullen een aantal van die opnames verklaard kunnen worden als lens flares of bekende hemellichamen zoals de planeet Venus, maar een fiks aantal kan ook niet op die manier verklaard worden.
Zo hadden we vorige week een artikel over een Duitser die tijdens een vlucht van Zürich naar Hamburg een aantal planeten filmde vanuit een vliegtuig. Deze opname is door de onderzoeker Marshall Masters bestudeerd en hij komt tot de conclusie dat deze opname echt is en zich daar wel degelijk een aantal planeten bevinden.
Nu kregen wij een aantal filmopnames toegestuurd van een lezer die afgelopen zaterdag van Innsbruck naar Rotterdam vloog.
Ook daarop zijn meerdere planeten waar te nemen naast de zon. De lens flare in het beeld beweegt en verplaatst/verdwijnt terwijl de "tweede zon" op positie blijft.

Bij het eerste filmpje van gisteren had ik wel zicht op de zon. Had me gepolariseerde zonnebril op gedaan. En daar zag ik die ervoor en erachter. Die rechter volgens mij niet maar het ging allemaal erg snel. Mijn telefoon geeft Barwies aan als locatie om 09:55. We gingen om 09.50 de lucht in.

Een 150 kilometer lange muur in Jordanië stelt archeologen voor een raadsel. Niemand weet wanneer of door wie de muur is gebouwd of wat het doel van de muur was.
De muur, die bekend staat als Khatt Shebib, werd in 1948 ontdekt door Sir Alec Kirkbridge, een Britse diplomaat in Jordanië. Vanuit het vliegtuig zag hij een stenen muur die door het land liep.
Torens
Archeologen hebben de resten van de muur onderzocht aan de hand van luchtfoto’s. Ze ontdekten dat de muur zich uitstrekt over een afstand van 106 kilometer. “Als de resten van een parallelle muur worden meegerekend is de muur in totaal 150 kilometer lang,” zei Rebecca Banks van de Oxford-universiteit in het Zeitschrift für Orient-Archäologie.
De muur is ongeveer een meter hoog en een halve meter breed. De archeologen hebben ook resten gevonden van zo’n 100 torens met een doorsnee van twee tot vier meter. Sommige torens zijn later pas gebouwd, aldus de onderzoekers.
Aardewerk
Archeologen hebben geen idee wanneer of door wie de muur is gebouwd en waarom. Op basis van aardewerk dat in de torens is gevonden, kunnen de onderzoekers zeggen dat de muur waarschijnlijk ergens tussen 312 voor Christus en 750 na Christus is gebouwd.
Er is meer onderzoek nodig om alle mysteries rond de muur op te lossen. Luchtfoto’s zullen geen antwoord geven op de belangrijkste vragen en daarom zal er veldwerk moeten worden verricht.

In 1969 bereikte Apollo 10 de maan. Het ruimtetuig vloog ook langs de achterkant van de maan, waar radiocontact met de aarde niet mogelijk is. Alles ging volgens plan. Althans, dat dacht men lange tijd.
Na bijna 40 jaar kwamen opnames naar buiten waaruit bleek dat de drie astronauten boven de achterkant van de maan iets vreemds hebben meegemaakt. Op de opnames is vreemde ruimtemuziek te horen via de radio van de Apollo, schrijft de Huffington Post.
De ruimtevaarders werden geconfronteerd met een geluid dat ze niet konden plaatsen en zelf een soort kosmische ruimtemuziek noemden.
De drie astronauten gaven aan dat ze geluiden hoorden die ze nog nooit eerder hadden gehoord. “Het klinkt als een soort kosmische ruimtemuziek. Hoor je dat? Dat fluitende geluid? Whoooooo! Dat is zeker rare muziek!”
De onverklaarbare muziek was ongeveer een uur te horen. De astronauten waren zo opgeschrikt door de kosmische klanken dat ze twijfelden om hun ervaring met de ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA te delen.
Vlak voordat het radiocontact met Houston weer mogelijk werd overwogen Thomas Stafford, John Young en Eugene Cernan om het aan Mission Control te melden. “Het is ongelooflijk! Zullen we het hen vertellen? Ik weet het niet. We moeten erover nadenken.”
“De logica vertelt me dat als er daar iets is opgenomen, er daar ook echt iets was,” zegt astronaut Alfred Worden. “De NASA hield informatie achter als ze dacht dat dat in het belang van het publiek was.”
De transcripties van de gesprekken van de astronauten kregen na de missie het stempel ‘vertrouwelijk’ en verdwenen in de NASA-archieven. Waar de vreemde ruimtemuziek vandaan kwam, is nooit duidelijk geworden.

She took the kids to the beach as she usually does a few times a week when she noticed this object. She brought the cam recorder because she has spotted the object around the same area roughly once a month. She also stated that when it appears its always if front of the sun. I was not present but watching the video it seems to change shape or reflect/absorb light. I also noticed what I think looks like a thin red line maybe a light across the object?

Gravitational Waves: What Their Discovery Means for Science and Humanity

People around the world cheered yesterday morning (Feb. 11) when scientists announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves — ripples in the fabric of space-time whose existence was first proposed by Albert Einstein, in 1916.
The waves came from two black holes circling each other, closer and closer, until they finally collided. The recently upgraded Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) captured the signal on Sept. 14, 2015. Not every scientific discovery gets this kind of reception, so what exactly is all the hype about, and what's next for LIGO now that it has spotted these elusive waves?
First of all, detecting two colliding black holes is thrilling by itself — no one knew for sure if black holes actually merged together to create even more-massive black holes, but now there's physical proof. And there's the joy of finally having direct evidence for a phenomenon that was first predicted 100 years ago, using an instrument that was proposed 40 years ago. But what is truly monumental about this detection is that it gives humanity the ability to see the universe in a totally new way, scientists said. The ability to directly detect gravitational waves — which are generated by the acceleration or deceleration of massive objects in space — has been compared to a deaf person suddenly gaining the ability to hear sound. An entirely new realm of information is now available.
"It's like Galileo pointing the telescope for the first time at the sky," LIGO team member Vassiliki (Vicky) Kalogera, a professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern University in Illinois, told Space.com. "You're opening your eyes — in this case, our ears — to a new set of signals from the universe that our previous technologies did not allow us to receive, study and learn from."
"Up until now, we've been deaf to gravitational waves," LIGO Executive Director David Reitze, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), said during an announcement ceremony in Washington, D.C. "What's going to come now is we're going to hear more things, and no doubt we'll hear things that we expected to hear … but we will also hear things that we never expected."
With this new sensory view of the universe, here are some of the things scientists hope to discover.
Dark matter, dark energy: ESA and CERN set to unravel mysteries of the cosmos
LIGO is particularly sensitive to gravitational waves that come from violent cosmic events, such as two massive objects colliding or a star exploding. The observatory has the potential to locate these objects or events before light-based telescopes can do so, and in some cases, gravitational-wave observations could be the only way to find and study such events.
For example, in yesterday's announcement, scientists reported that LIGO had identified two black holes spinning around each other and merging together in a final, energetic collision. As their name suggests, black holes don't radiate light, which means they are invisible to telescopes that collect and study electromagnetic radiation. Some black holes are visible with light-based telescopes, because material in their immediate vicinity radiates, but scientists haven't seen examples of merging black holes with radiating material around them.
In addition, the black holes spotted by LIGO are 29 and 36 times the mass of the sun, respectively. But Reitze said that as LIGO's sensitivity continues to improve, the instrument could be sensitive to black holes that are 100, 200 or even 500 times the mass of the sun that are further away from Earth. "There could be a really nice discovery space that opens up once we get out there," he said.
Scientists already know that studying the sky in different wavelengths of light can reveal new data about the cosmos. For many centuries, astronomers could only work with optical light. But relatively recently, researchers built instruments allowing them to study the universe using X-rays, radio waves, ultraviolet waves and gamma-rays. Each time, scientists got a new view of the universe.
"If we're ever lucky enough to have a supernova in our own galaxy, or maybe in a nearby galaxy, we will be able to look at the actual dynamics of what goes on inside the supernova," said LIGO co-founder Rainer Weiss of MIT, who spoke at the announcement ceremony. While light is often blocked by dust and gas, "gravitational waves come right out [of the supernova], boldly unimpeded," Weiss said. "As a consequence, you really find out what's going on inside of these things."
Other exotic objects scientists hope to study with gravitational waves are neutron stars, which are mind-bogglingly dense, burned-out stellar corpses: A teaspoon of neutron-star material would weigh about a billion tons on Earth. Scientists aren't sure what happens to regular matter under such extreme conditions, but gravitational waves could provide extremely helpful clues, because these waves should carry information about the interior of the neutron star all the way to Earth, LIGO scientists said.
LIGO also has a system set up to alert light-based telescopes when the detector seems to have spotted a gravitational wave. Some of the astronomical events that LIGO will study, such as colliding neutron stars, may produce light in all wavelengths, from gamma-rays to radio waves. With LIGO's alert system in place, it's possible that scientists could observe some astronomical events or objects in various wavelengths of light, plus gravitational waves, which would provide a "very complete picture" of those events, Reitze said.
"When that happens, that'll be, I think, the next big thing in this field," he said.
Relativity
Gravitational waves were first predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which was published in 1916. That famous theory has stood up to all kinds of physical tests, but there are some aspects that scientists haven't been able to study in the real world, because they require very extreme circumstances. The extreme warping of space-time is one example of this.
"Until now, we have only seen warped space-time when it is very calm — as though we had only seen the surface of the ocean on a very calm day, when it's quite glassy," Kip Thorne of Caltech, another founding member of LIGO and an expert on warped space-time, said at yesterday's ceremony. "We had never seen the ocean roiled in a storm, with crashing waves. All that changed on Sept. 14. The colliding black holes that produced these gravitational waves created a violent storm in the fabric of space and time." [The History & Structure of the Universe (Infographic)]
"This observation tests that regime beautifully, very strongly," Thorne continued. "And Einstein comes out with beaming success."
But the study of general relativity via gravitational waves is far from over. Questions remain about the nature of the graviton, the particle believed to carry the gravitational force (just like the photon is the particle that carries the electromagnetic force). And scientists have many questions about the inner workings of black holes, which gravitational waves may help illuminate (so to speak). But all of that, the scientists said, will be revealed slowly, over the course of many years, as LIGO and related instruments collect more data on more events.
Looking toward the next three years, Reitze said the collaboration is focused on increasing LIGO's sensitivity to its full potential. This will make the observatory — which consists of two big detectors, one in Louisiana and the other in Washington state — more sensitive to gravitational waves. But scientists don't know how many events LIGO will see, because they don't know how often many of these events occur in the universe.
LIGO detected the binary black hole merger even before the instrument began its first official observation campaign after its recent upgrade, but it's possible that this was a lucky break. To get the gravitational astronomy train rolling, LIGO simply needs more data.
When asked to comment on LIGO's impact on the world beyond the scientific community, and about how gravitational-wave science might influence people's daily lives, Reitze simply said, "Who knows?"
"When Einstein predicted general relativity, who would have predicted that we'd use it every day when we use our cellphones?" he said. (General relativity provides an understanding how gravity influences the passing of time, and this information is necessary for GPS technology, which uses satellites that orbit further away from the gravitational pull of the Earth than people on the surface).
LIGO is "the most sensitive instrument ever built," said Reitze, and the technological advances that have been made while building the observatory may feed into technologies that will be used in ways people can't yet predict.
Thorne said he sees the larger contribution of LIGO slightly differently.
"When we look back on the era of the Renaissance, and we ask ourselves, 'What did the humans of that era give to us that's important to us today?' I think we would all agree it's great art, great architecture, great music," he said.
"Similarly, when our descendants look back on this era, and they ask themselves, 'What great things came to us?' … I believe there will be an understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe and an understanding of what those laws do in the universe, and an exploration of the universe," Thorne added. "LIGO is a big part of that. The rest of astronomy is a big part of that. And I think that cultural gift to our future generations is really much bigger than any kind of technological spin-off, than the ultimate development of technology of any kind. I think we should be proud of what we give to our descendants culturally."
Another reminder of space being a creepy place has been presented in the lost Apollo 10 tapes – the mission that circled over to the dark side of the Moon. The tapes contain strange ‘music’ that was received out of Earth’s signal reach.
The mission happened in May just ahead of Apollo 11’s 1969 moon landing two months later. The recordings recovered from Apollo 10 were only declassified in 2008 and will now be played on the Science Channel’s Unexplained Files coming up later this month.
So, what was strange about those recordings? Besides the fact that they contained a very musical dance of frequencies and noise, it was the fact that they could not have come from any manmade source, as there’s no radio signal on the far side of the Moon. This means also that astronauts can’t talk to Earth and are effectively alone in outer space for the duration of their time there.
In 1969, two months before Neil Armstrong would set foot on the moon, Apollo 10 was cruising just above the lunar surface when the crew was surprised by a “whistling sound.” The three astronauts discuss the incident at length in the upcoming show.
Al Worden, astronaut with Apollo 15, explains: “There are recorders that record whatever’s going on the back side, and then you do a data dump when you come around the front side, and Houston or mission control then can see what happened when you were around the back side.”
The “music” transmission lasted for almost an hour, and had the crew talking about whether NASA needed to know at all what they had heard. “It’s unbelievable! You know?” they confess. Almost five decades later there is still no clue as to the source.
When the three eventually got back, they opted not to tell NASA, which could be a smart move, seeing as the agency could have had them remanded into custody and kept from flying because of concerns for their mental state.
The debate will rage on in the upcoming episode of ‘NASA’s Unexplained Files’, as scientists continue to discuss the more prominent theories: one possible one is that charged particles were interacting with a magnetic field, the way they did on Jupiter and Saturn. There’s of course one problem here: the Moon has no magnetic field or atmosphere of any kind.
So where did this broadcast originate from if it wasnt earth?
Dr. Micheal Salla has indicated that there is a Military Industrial Extraterrestrial Complex or MIEC, and that Earth is being assimilated by an alien agenda which also operates on Earth’s Moon.
The photo below is similar to many that I myself have seen. It appears that the Chinese who took the photo, have confirmed that aliens exist. The Chinese have probably been in contact with these aliens already.
That would explain why so many radio telescopes are searching for signals from aliens, and more being built as we speak, yet no reported signals from aliens were reported to the public.

But in the new video released by YouTube channel Section 51 2.0, the object which looks like a shrunken version of one of the most famous NASA thermal blanket images, is filmed from various angles following the ISS.The clip is entitled ‘ISS films the Black Knight Satellite UFO very close to Soyuz spacecraft – January 2016.’
YouTube channel Section 51 2.0 releases several alleged UFO videos of such good quality that it is repeatedly accused of broadcasting hoaxes which have been digitally-created.
It claims the new footage was leaked out of Russia after being filmed in January by the ISS’s own cameras very close to the Russian Souyez spacecraft which was delivering supplies.

It was 1969, two months before Apollo 11's historic first manned landing on the moon, when Apollo 10 entered lunar orbit, which included traversing the far side of the moon when all spacecraft are out of radio contact with Earth for about an hour and nobody on Earth can see or hear them. As far as the public knew, everything about the mission went smoothly. Almost four decades went by before lost recordings emerged that revealed something unsettling that the three Apollo astronauts had experienced while flying above the far side of the moon.
The taped recordings contained "strange, otherworldly music coming through the Apollo module's radio," according to the upcoming Science Channel series, "NASA's Unexplained Files." The conversation between the three astronauts indicated they heard sounds like they had never heard before: "It sounds like, you know, outer space-type music." "You hear that? That whistling sound? Whooooooooo!" "Well, that sure is weird music!" The unexplained "music" transmission lasted almost an hour, and just before the astronauts regained radio contact with Earth, they discussed whether or not to tell Mission Control what they had experienced: "It's unbelievable! You know?" "Shall we tell them about it?" "I don't know. We ought to think about it." "The Apollo 10 crew was very used to the kind of noise that they should be hearing. Logic tells me that if there was something recorded on there, then there was something there," Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden says on the Science Channel program. On January 2nd, 2015 the editor of website earthfiles.com received a very unexpected letter from an alleged retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Flight Engineer.
The letter received recounts experiences where the anonymous Navy officer (refers to himself as “Brian”) recounts his bizarre and extraordinary experiences flying cargo and rescue in Antarctica between the years 1983 to 1997. He claims that a collaboration between humans and aliens exist, and that the Antarctica is a major research ground for these incredible collaborations.
Brian’s high strangeness experiences flying cargo and rescue in Antarctica were in the 1983 to 1997 time period and included several observations of aerial silver discs darting around over the Transantarctic Mountains. He and his crew also saw ancient ruins and a big hole in the ice only about five to ten miles from the geographic South Pole (pink circle on map) that was supposed to be a No Fly Zone. But during an emergency medevac situation, they entered the No Fly Zone and saw what they were not supposed to see: an alleged entrance to a human and E. T. science research base created under the ice. Then at a camp near Marie Byrd Land, some dozen scientists disappeared for two weeks and when they re-appeared, Brian’s flight crew got the assignment to pick them up. Brian says they would not talk and “their faces looked scared.”

He has decided to share what he experienced between those years in the following letter, reproduced in full below:

Hi Linda I am a retired United States Navy LC130 Flight Engineer that retired after 20 years of service in 1997. I have been wanting to write you for a long time about my experience on the Antarctic continent with flying vehicles that I was told not to talk about. I served part of my 20 years in the Navy with a Squadron called Antarctic Development Squadron Six or VXE-6 as it was also known. I served with this squadron from around 1983 till I retired March of 1997. Being a flight engineer and flying more then 4000 hours in that capacity I have seen things that most people have not even imagined on the Continent of Antarctica. The land there seems more alien then earthly. Our deployments to this land started in late September and ended the end of February every year until the Squadron was decommissioned in 1999. This time of year was the summer season when most of the science was done do to warmer temps and 24 hours of daylight.
During my time in the squadron I flew to almost every part of the Antarctic Continent including the South Pole more the 300 times. McMurdo Station which is 3.5 hours of flying time from the South Pole station was the point of squadron operation during our yearly deployments. Between these two stations is a mountain range called the Trans Antarctic’s. With what we called Severe Clear weather from McMurdo to South Pole the Trans Antarctic’s are visible from the altitudes which the aircraft flew approximately 25,000 to 35,000 feet. On several flights to and from South Pole our crew viewed air vehicles darting around the tops of Trans Antarctic’s almost exactly in the same spot every time we would fly by and view them. This is very unusual for air traffic down there due to the fact that the only aircraft flying on the continent were our squadron aircraft. Every aircraft knew where the other aircraft were do to flight schedules being followed.
Another unique issue with South Pole station is that our aircraft was not allowed to fly over a certain area designated 5 miles from the station. The reason stated because of a air sampling camp in that area. This did not make any sense to any of us on the crew because on 2 different occasions we had to fly over this area. One time due to a medical evacuation of the Australian camp called Davis Camp. It was on the opposite side of the continent and we had to refuel at South Pole and a direct course to this Davis Camp was right over the air sampling station. The only thing we saw going over this camp was a very large hole going into the ice. You could fly one of our LC130 into this thing.
It was after this medevac mission we where briefed by some spooks (Intelligence Agents I presumed) from Washington DC and told not to speak of the area we overflew. The other time we got close to “The air sampling Camp” we had navigation and electrical failures on the aircraft and was told to immediately depart the area and report to our squadron commanding officer when we returned to McMurdo. Needless to say our pilot (Aircraft Commander) got his butt chewed and our crew was not on the South Pole supply run for over a month. There were many other times we saw things that was out of the ordinary.
One outlying camp (near Marie Byrd Land) we dropped scientists and their equipment at was out of communication with McMurdo for 2 weeks. Our crew flew back to the camp to find out if the scientists were ok. We found no one there and no sign of any fowl play. The Radio was working fine as we called McMurdo to verify it working properly. We left the camp and flew back to McMurdo as ordered by our CO. A week later the Scientist showed back up to there camp and called McMurdo for someone to come pick them up. Our crew got the flight back there to pick them since we put them into that camp and we knew the terrain and location. None of the scientists would talk to any of the crew on the plane and to me they looked scared.
As soon as we landed back at McMurdo they (Scientists) where put on another of our squadron aircraft and flown to Christchurch New Zealand. We never heard about them again. Their equipment that we brought back from the camp was put in quarantine and shipped back to the United States escorted by the same spooks that debriefed us about our fly over of the air sample camp/ large hole in the ice. I could go on and on about things and situations that I observed during my tour with VXE-6. Talk among the flight crews was that there is a UFO base at South Pole and some of the crew heard talk from some of the scientist working at the Pole of EBEs working with and interacting with the scientists at that air sampling camp/large ice hole.
Brian, now 59 years old, graduated from an Iowa college with an associate’s degree in aviation maintenance technology and an aviation certificate. In 1977, he then enlisted in the U. S. Navy and served for twenty years until his retirement in 1997. He provided Earthfiles his DD-214 documents and other certificates of service including this Antarctic Service Medal given to him on November 20, 1984 as proof of his time in service.
There appears to be many secrets hidden in the Antarctica and we are pretty much hearing different stories every month about military personnel disclosing information about Aliens in that part of the world!

Kepler has discovered a rocky planet bigger than scientists ever thought was possible. Studying BD+20594b will allow scientists to learn more about the way planets form.

The Kepler Spacecraft, which has the ability to observe distant solar systems, has discovered arocky planet bigger than scientists ever thought was possible. Meet BD+20594b.
ROCKY COMPETITION
The former title holder of “biggest rocky planet” went to Kepler-10c, which has a radius more than double that of Earth. We thought this was as big as rocky planets could get.
Most of our understanding of planetary formation and solar system development has come from direct observation of our own Solar System. We simply couldn’t see any others, and we had no way of knowing how typical—or how strange—our own Solar System might be.
With the discovery of BD+20594b, though, we’re learning, and Kepler-10c has some intense competition. The new planet is about 16 times as massive as Earth and half the diameter of Neptune. Its density is about 8 grams per cubic centimeter (for comparison, Earth is 5.514 g/cm). This is rather dense, but it makes sense, as it’s composed entirely of rock.
The planet, whose existence was reported on January 28 at arXiv.org by astrophysicist Nestor Espinoza and his colleagues at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago, is over 500 light years away, in the constellation Aries. The planet was discovered last year, as it passed between Kepler and its host star. Luckily, the planet’s host star is exceptionally bright, allowing a more detailed observation than most exoplanets.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BD+20594B AND KEPLER
The discovery and further study of BD+20594b is important for a couple of reasons. It shows that there is still so much to learn about planetary formation. Kepler’s mission, which started off just confirming the existence of exoplanets, and showing us how common they are, will play a key role in furthering that research.
In addition, there’s much more variety in planetary composition than just what we see in our own solar system. Now that we have this new planet to compare to Kepler-10c, astrophysicists can do further research on planetary formation theories.

A NEW PLAYER
The scientists at LIGO may be celebrating, but they’re about to have some stiff competition.
The People’s Republic of China now has three projects lined up to investigate gravitational waves as reported by the state media yesterday. These projects were decided upon just days after US scientists confirmed Einstein’s prediction.
The country has a military-run, multi-billion-dollar space program, and if it pursues gravitational wave research, officials say it could lead to China becoming preeminent in this field.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has already drafted a proposal for a project focusing on gravitational wave detection, as reported by the official Xinhua news agency. The proposal is named “Taiji,” which is a tribute to the “supreme ultimate” of Chinese philosophy. This philosophy is symbolized by the famous Yin and Yang, showing that contrary forces are complementary and interconnected.
Although there are several proposals in place, none of them have received a go signal from the Chinese government.
BECOMING A WORLD LEADER
Chinese physicist Hu Wenrui told the People’s Daily newspaper, the official mouthpiece of the Communist party: “If we launch our own satellites, we will have a chance to be a world leader” in gravitational wave research.
Success “depends on the decision-makers’ resolution and the country’s investment,” he added.
On the other hand, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said: “If we can participate in these sorts of extremely precise technological projects then in a short time it will give a huge boost to our country’s manufacturing industries.”
DISCOVERY OF THE YEAR

Gravitational waves were predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916, and have remained an elusive and much-sought-after quarry for cosmologists ever since. Einstein used the theory of relativity as his basis, which states that gravitational waves transport energy as gravitational radiation—essentially, ripples in the fabric of spacetime.
Until recently, scientists had yet to prove this theory. But last week, the Advanced LIGO team announced that they were able to detect gravitational waves from a merger of two black holes about 400 megaparsecs (1.3 billion light years) from Earth, an event that was named GW150914.
The discovery has been heralded as the beginning of a new era for observational astronomy, and with news of the projected Chinese efforts in gravitational wave detection, along with the American and European projects already underway, the future promises a rich harvest of gravitational wave discoveries.

General J. A. Samford and UFOs
Credible observers reporting incredible objects,” said USAF General J. A. Samford in the year 1952, and his comment is still true today. Honest and intelligent people are still reporting strange objects that are difficult, and sometimes impossible, to relate to known physical phenomena. Enough attention has been brought to this serious problem that the US Government officially took action on two separate occasions. The first time was when it was thought that UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) might possibly be evidence of the technological capability of a foreign, but an Earth based power. In reaction to that possibility, the US Air Force Foreign Technology Division located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base was given the tough job of determining whether or not the mysterious UFOs were a threat to the security of the United States. Unfortunately, many people thought that the job was to determine exactly what the UFOs were. In the years, which have followed, the Air Force has been unjustly maligned for supposedly “covering up” the “real truth” about UFOs.
In actuality, the Air Force did precisely the job to which it was assigned. It determined the extent to which the UFOs threatened national security. The extent was found to be zero! However, the public was so unhappy with the lack of any real conclusions as to the nature of the UFOs, that the Government took further actions to resolve the issue. One of those actions, in 1966 it contracted for an independent scientific study to determine the real nature of UFOs.

A new excellent map via Metrocosm says in sensational detail, the interactive map compiles more than 90,000 reports of UFO sightings in the United States since 1905. Data was taken from the National UFO Reporting Center and the Mutual UFO Network.
The glowing dots on the map represent witness reports, and are sized proportionately to the number of witness reports in each region for each particular sighting: small (individual report), medium (small group reports), and large (multiple witness reports).
Although Philadelphia itself has been fairly quiet on the UFO front, there have been plenty of UFO reports around the Philly area over the past hundred or so years, particularly in Burlington, New Jersey, where 75 witnesses report seeing “bright beam of light omitted from cylinder” on a September evening in 2007. Numerous sightings occur above the Delaware River shown has black ribbon on the map. Several reports often from police or military personnel indicate the UFOs may hide under water in the river.
The map’s detail includes sketches, photos, and even videos of strange sightings in the Philadelphia area and beyond. Just try not to get lost for hours wading through the first-person witness reports.

I spotted two UFOs directly above my house. They were circular with orange/yellow type lights going around the outside of the two crafts. After a few minutes, one UFO turned off its lights. I could still see this craft even with the lights off. The craft with the lights off then proceeded north leaving the other behind and still lit up. At this point, I ran into my house for binoculars. The craft that was lit turned off its lights and proceeded north. I followed this one with my binoculars as it headed north. Neither UFO made any sound at all. They flew much faster than a commercial jet. Upon reaching a north point, they both picked up speed made a sharp right turn and were gone. My wife spied three more UFOs south of my house that were not lit up, and moved north at a fast rate of speed. During these ten minutes, every dog in the neighborhood was barking. We also smelled the smell of something burning. I do not know if the burnt smell and dogs were related but the dogs stopped barking and the smell went away. NSA Has the Smoking Gun Evidence of Alien Contact

Not a lot of people realize this but the National Security Agency (NSA) has on their website proof of Extraterrestrial contact under the title “Key to the Extraterrestrial messages” (found under NSA PDF). This is a hugely important step towards Disclosure and something, which is far too overlooked by the UFO community. The original document was cleared for public release back in October 2004, but strangely not ‘officially’ released into the Public Domain until April 2011! Such an important document needs to be seen by the world as this is on the NSA’s actual website, sat there waiting for all to see. We want Disclosure of Alien contact, then here you go! This treasure trove of documents available, one is particularly interesting from the NSA Technical Journal Vol. XIV No 1 with FOIA Case number 41472, which has been titled ‘Extraterrestrial Intelligence’. The document authored by a Dr. Campaigne, presents a series of 29 messages received from outer space.
Here’s an extremely interesting snippet from the journal: “Recently a series of radio messages was heard coming from outer space. The transmission was not continuous, but cut by pauses into pieces, which could be taken as units, for they were repeated over and over again. The pauses show here as punctuation. The various combinations have been represented by letters of the alphabet, so that the messages can be written down. Each message except the first is given here only once. The serial number of the messages has been supplied for each reference.” If anybody ever mocks you for believing in Aliens, then please feel free to steer them towards the NSA’s website!
NSA Document Admits ET Contact
On October 21, 2004, the NSA approved for release to the public a portion of their NSA Journal Vol. XIV No. 1. This is a report of a presentation given to the NSA by Dr. Howard Campaigne regarding the decoding of extraterrestrial messages that had been received “from outer space”. Apparently, these messages had actually been received via the Sputnik satellite, but no one had any idea how to decode them at the time. Dr. Howard Campaigne and some other NSA super mathematicians in the crypto department had been given the task of decoding the messages.
There were a total of 29 messages to be decoded — quite an undertaking. It is curious, to say the least, that this document was cleared for release on October 21, 2004. Why was that? Because the NSA did not release it into public information until April 21, 2011. Though cleared for release, the NSA had been stonewalling it along with hundreds of other NSA documents about contact with UFOs and extraterrestrials until they lost the lawsuit brought by Peter Gersten, a lawyer from Arizona. When they truly lost, the judge’s order had to be carried out, and the documents had to be released. It is curious, though, that during his presentation Dr. Campaigne mentions there are “words” that they have translated, and some “words” they have not yet begun to understand. He gives an example of a connective word that he knows is connective (joining two or more statements) but does not yet understand the translation of that word. Debunkers are scared of the release of this information as it proves beyond any doubt that they are, and always have been, dead wrong.
Globular Clusters as Cradles of Life in Advanced Civilizations
They will be able to send exploratory probes to nearby stars and receive data that takes only days, weeks, or months to reach them. They may be able to travel to nearby planetary systems that are hospitable and establish self-sustaining colonies over time scales far shorter than seems possible for advanced civilizations, which, like our own, inhabit the relatively diffuse Galactic disk. Civilizations spawned in a globular cluster may have opportunities to establish self-sustaining outposts, thereby reducing the probability that a single catastrophic event will destroy the civilization or its descendants. Although individual civilizations within a cluster may follow different evolutionary paths, or even be destroyed, the cluster may always host some advanced civilization, once a small number of them have managed to jump across interstellar space. Mercy ship Atlantic Ocean UFO
This happened one night back in 1991 while I was a volunteer on a Mercy ship traveling from Los Angeles, CA to Riga, Latvia. The sighting occurred in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We had traveled from Los Angeles thru the Panama Canal to the Atlantic. We were traveling on a refurbished World War 2 freight ship. Therefore, it was not a fast ship, after the sighting it took about 4-5 days more to arrive in Germany. Since there is not much to do while at sea, my group of five friends went outside to the quarterdeck of the ship one evening (around 7:30 PM. We were talking and looking at the ocean, when all of the sudden a large lighted rectangular structure suddenly appeared on the ocean surface. It didn’t land or surface, it was as if someone just turned on the lights.
It had several colors of light and they appeared to be positioned on a sequential way and it was cover with light from top to bottom. Since it was at night and at sea, sizes and distances are hard to acquire. Also the rush of adrenaline since we had been trained to always report if we saw something close to the ship, as there are risks of accidents. The ship I was traveling was close to 300 feet long, and this structure was enormous about 5 to 10 times bigger than our ship long wise and about 3-5 times taller. It was suddenly there, and all were alarmed. We started to wonder if it could be a gigantic ship, but it looked too big even for a cruise ship. The size was bigger than any ship and was also practically just a huge rectangular shape or a net of lights. The lights were big and I would guess it had about 500 to 1000 lights, all distributed in a sequential or neat pattern. After a minute, we realized we needed to inform the bridge crew. I and another friend ran up the stairs to inform the crew and when we walked into the flight bridge and you could tell they were alarmed. The First Mate was giving orders and the situation seems a bit stressed out. Once we could talk, we told them, “We saw something big with lots of light very close to the ship”. The First Mate told us that, “It all of a sudden disappeared from the radar”. We stayed there talking with the crew and wondering what it was. Several other crew members at the flight bridge had also seen the structure and were making arrangements to communicate with whatever was nearby. They had seen it on the radar, but it quickly disappeared from the radar and also visually, as if someone just had turned the lights off.
Regarding the location: I wrote Dominican Republic as this was perhaps the closest thing I could find on the map. But, the sighting took place in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. We witnesses talked about it and we all had seen the same thing. Unfortunately, none of us had a camera. It would be interesting to find out if this was documented in the ship’s log. The Picture shows a comparison between the ship and the lighted structure in the ocean. The images were put together using images found online and remember the sighting was at night. Wickenburg — We were driving on July 20, 2016, and the sun had set but there was still a hint of sun light. I saw two bright orange lights sitting on a cloud. I thought it was airplanes too close together. One blinked and shut off then the other. I asked my husband if he seen that he said, “No we are not looking for ufos tonight we are training.” An orange red orb lit up the sky and he witnessed that. So we watched it for about 45 minutes. Then it formed in a straight line the lights were turning on one by one and it got bright. It scared us and it disappeared for about 5 minutes. Diablo Grande — Driving home from L.A. sightseeing in Hollywood, on out trip home driving north on Interstate 5 when I mentioned the beautiful sunset was on February 15, 2016.
In response, my wife gets my phone and takes a picture then notices after taking the photo that there was a strange anomaly. Therefore, we look to the sky to confirm our findings and we witnessed the exact same shape for not more than 30 seconds when it dispersed, or disintegrated. Littleton — I observed two lights in the sky close to one another for two minutes on February 10, 2016, of a possible UFOs over Lakewood. Both lights faded quickly, one after the other.

Oxford — I was photographing two black Blackhawks that were flying in tight formation with additional equipment attached to the sides on February 17, 2016. (Looked like extended range fuel tanks because they had medivac badging, so I don’t think it would be pods for weapons). I caught a dark black triangular shaped craft behind them near the horizon. I included the photos to this report… The photo is zoomed and cropped. I took it with my Smartphone. The helicopters did not appear to be aware of the craft, or at least they were not engaging it. The closest manufactured thing to it would be an F117 or B2 but this is not a military operating area nor do those types of aircraft frequent the KOXC or KDXR airports. Blackhawks are seen routinely doing patrols/training, however are not based here. Thanks to MUFON CMS

I woke up early to see the sunrise from my balcony on February 9, 2016. Sky was still dark. Noticed what I thought it was a plane moving very slowly but realized it was hovering up in the air. I noticed blinking red lights to the right of object that were emanating bright lights! It would turn brighter at intervals repeatedly for about half hour on the same spot at high altitude. I filmed six minutes but my balcony is completely screened so the quality is poor and the object was at a great distance. After about a half hour, the object moved north and I lost sight of it. Orlando — I was driving home from work on February 11, 201, and noticed the sky was filled with hundreds of large orange lights. These were not stars. Hundreds of them began traveling from the south to the north, popping up and moving for five minutes. People were pulling over, getting out of their cars, by the hundreds. Lithonia— My daughter and I were driving down the road about 9:30 PM, when she spotted lights in the sky on November 27, 2015. I have never believed in UFOs so I ignored them but then they came so I know there’s something out there. We watched it and it lasted over 40 minutes. They were bright lights they became one then divided into twos and fours and sixes changed colors. Helicopters are flying around with their spotlights. We called the police department to find out if they had any complaints, we were told that we were the only ones. People are standing outside on the side of the road videotaping and we have some few videos. I got all excited and saw them twice in the same spot within a two-week period. It lasted for 35 minutes the first time, and we followed. I was scared but then he gave a calming effect. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Boise –.I was with my sister at a car wash when I noticed a light on June 18, 2015. Above it was over a mile away and not moving. I decided to take a picture with my cell phone. We both commented on how bright it was. I forgot about it until months later, whiny friends started to talk about sightings of lights they had seen and several UFO’s. As they were talking, I decided to search for the picture I took months earlier. I found this picture and everyone got excited. Later I sent it to my laptop and enlarged it. The picture came out a lot clearer with more detail. It would be great to know if this is a new technology from the Air Force or actually a UFO. Massachusetts Lights
Boston– I was taking sightseeing pictures of the surroundings. I reviewed my iPhone pictures and noticed strange objects on February 1, 2016. Several UFO’s were hovering in the skyline near the port of Boston. I was very surprised and astonished when I reviewed my pictures. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Montana Orb
Great Falls — My daughter took these pictures on February 5, 2016, she was at a local park with her six-year-old son and she told me that on this particular afternoon there were more contrails than usual. She took her, a Samsung Galaxy 3, cell phone and snapped five pictures. Later, she found this object apparently flying across the sky. In the last picture, the object appears to be changing colors and glowing or reflecting light blue differently than in the earlier pictures. Judging by its position in each picture, it was moving across the sky much faster than the jets. She saw jet contrails, almost as if they were searching for something. The object is at 2:00 to the sun, then 3:00 to the sun, and then 11:00 to the sun. That is the sequence of the pictures. Thanks to MUFON CMS
New Jersey Triangle
Jobstown — I was driving home from campus, it was right after 8:30 pm, and I was on the road I live on, which is a back road, about five miles outside McGuire Fort Dix Joint military base on February 12, 2016. In the sky, I saw three bright lights overtop of the trees that line the side of the road. I approached going about 45 mph; I thought it was weird how low that plane seemed to be. The three lights were large, right above the tree line, and hovering. I stopped at the bottom of the local farm’s driveway, at the most only 40 feet away from the triangular flying object. I was scared for a second because I knew they saw me, and they knew I was slowing down to get a better look. Through the tree line, I tried to identify the tail, which would have to be the back light, because the ship was facing the road at about a 45 degree angle, with the two bright lights on either side where I would have thought the wings would have been were facing toward me at an angle.
It did not appear to be a normal plane, nor was it behaving like any plane I have ever heard of before. This was about 5 miles outside of Joint Base MDL, on the Fort Dix side of the base. Even though I live so close to the base, planes are not that common above this road. This ship was about 3 to 4 stories off the ground, right above the tree line. I grabbed my phone to try to get a picture, but couldn’t turn and use my phone. In the minute it took me to turn around, I could still see the brightness cast from the three lights. As soon as I had fully turned around to see it straight on again, it was gone in a second. It went from hovering, to gone. I was in complete shock because I was still trying to convince myself that this was a small plane. I drove forward for maybe another 30 seconds before I stopped my car to search the sky. I saw faint lights way off in the distance. It was cloudy tonight so I hadn’t seen any stars or other planes before viewing these lights.
I knew that those three lights were the lights 2-3 miles away. I sat in my car for a few seconds still in disbelief, trying to come up with another explanation for what I saw, but I could not. No plane, or military plane comes off base and decides to hover over a random line of trees, I lived here for over 8 years once my dad retired as a high-ranking officer from the military. The sighting lasted under 5 minutes, and once the lights were barely visible I turned back around and drove the 1/4 mile home. I went straight in to find my dad and ask him what that space ship could have been if it belonged to the military. He said maybe a drone, but it was the size of a small plane and hovered in the same spot for at least 2 minutes. No drone I have ever heard of can disappear from sight in one second. New York Light
Montour Falls— My friend and I were going to Watkins Glen from Odessa around 10 pm on June 20, 2014. We saw a glowing red object moving above the tree line over the swamp so we pulled over n watched it for maybe 3 -5 minutes.
It moved over the swamp and across the road, we were on and began to climb higher in the sky. There was a small flash and it was gone. I didn’t know what to think. I was shaking and nervous but at the same time excited. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Ohio Shuttle
Whitehouse — On my way to the grocery store I noticed there were four or five military like planes circling in the general area on February 14, 2016.
When I noticed they were all closing on a Central target that was in the middle. The target appeared to shoot straight up into the sky and it looked similar to a space shuttle. The craft went upwards in a straight line much faster than the others with a different trail. The military aircraft in the area then scattered in different directions after it went upwards. They were very clearly all headed to the same target before it took off. Unfortunately, the image only shows one of the planes trails and the trail of the craft itself. There were four other planes in the area, which is very uncommon. I also noticed when I got to the grocery store there were several cops sitting in their cars watching it. I live relatively close to a military base but never see air-traffic like this, there was no noise. And this craft is clearly different from the military aircraft and looked like a space shuttle that shot up in a straight line. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Oregon Orb
Canby— Driving home to Hubbard on Barlow Road I saw what a very bright blue orb zipping around the trees. I pulled out my iPhone rolled the window down and snapped a picture of it. I rationalized that perhaps it was a reflection off of a tractor. The orb made several fast zipping movements and then was floating in mid air on July 14, 2014.
I was driving a Prius and I saw no way to drive to the area of the sighting. I posted the image on my instagram account and sort of forgot about it. A year later I saw a picture posted by another UFO sighting that has lead me to investigate UFO sightings further. I now believe I saw was a UFO. Thanks to MUFON CMS
West Virginia Light
I was taking photos of the full moon on a friend’s porch and I captured a photo of the object. It appeared out of nowhere and it was there without moving, without sound for about 15 minutes. I watched it gradually camouflage with the sky. There was an odd feeling in the air like static electricity. I felt tingly.
It’s hard to describe and it sounds crazy but I felt almost euphoric during the time I saw it. Even before I saw it, I thought it was just it was a full moon and a beautiful night. All I know is what I saw and I cannot explain it as just some anomaly. When you see the photo, you be the judge. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Buenos Aires–I was returning from work, and noticed an object was silver rising to the sun on May 15, 2015. I took the photo for no apparent reason. The object was seen after a time in my phone. It made me question many things in the universe. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Australia Gold Coast UFO Hot Spot
Robina – Three witnesses saw a large circular disk object with two red/orange lights at the base surrounded by a glowing white ring at 7.35 pm, on March 7, 2014. A flying object hovered very slowly in one spot, much lower than any plane or helicopter I have witnessed in the area. The two red lights at the base of the object faded to orange before flashing rapidly. The object also appeared to be expanding then retracting its size repetitively and flying away extremely fast. The white ring or orb around the disc appeared to act as a bubble or light. The sighting lasted about seven minutes and had three witnesses. We have previously had two sightings identical to this within the past two months from the same location.
Robina, Gold Coast, Queensland –A brightamber orange orb occasionally with flecks of red was seen on March 9, 2014. It would move from east to west at cloud level. It was able to accelerate quickly, to a speed many times faster than any plane, and then it would slow down quickly, and then accelerate again. Canada Alien Triangle over Ontario
Walpole Island— It was an unusual warm night with fog on the river, when it should be cold on December 19, 2015. The fog stayed close to the ground reaching a few stories high. I drove the rural way home along the river from the store. When I was getting very close to home, I noticed a cluster of three orange lights very close to me right on the river. This cluster of orange lights was about helicopter height. There was no structure to support the lights that could see due to the fog. They looked exactly the same color and size like the streetlights on my road except that I was looking at a cluster of three lights. The orange lights stayed stationery as I drove down my road and parked in my driveway.
No structure was present as to why the lights would be there. It started moving slowly closer to me. I ran the short distance to get my sister to come outside and look at “this big plane”. There is frequent unusual activity in the sky here so she came running out. We witnessed a giant black triangle shape revealing itself over my neighbor’s house… The triangle backed up a little bit, and then traveled descending directly at me. It was at tree top-level and might be going to crash? I was scared and wanted to run. My sister looked up to see it just as it started to travel toward us. It was not a flat and was several stories in height. It was flat black and way larger than a football field. It was enormous and so close, detail was clear of its structure, size and lights.
It turned on its bottom lights on its way over to my yard. Outlining the craft were small white lights with three sets of red/green lights. In the middle was a large triangle area of what looked like white LED glowing lights. The pattern of these white lights was indescribable. As the front of the triangle arrived at my yard, it started emitting this loud hydraulic engine type of roaring noise and bumpy sounding. I’m familiar with hydraulic engine sounds as to the many boats on our river make those sounds. I had heard that same loud engine noise travel the entire sky a few weeks ago. It scared me as it flew directly overhead, but my sister watched it. I looked up at it after several seconds, as the white lights glowed and it was moving very slowly just over us. I got a good look but don’t know how to describe the white lights in the middle of the craft. Maybe it was a transparent area as well as being lit up. She yelled, “Get out of here”. The craft’s noise was loud enough that I could not hear her yelling at it I hope that’s what made it go away. We watched it until the end of the triangle shape went over us. Its sound and lights stopped after it went over us. The black triangle disappeared into the black night. We still marvel over seeing this triangle and talk about it every day. Finland Boomerang
I had my first sighting here in Finland September 15, 2015 at 12:30 pm. I am interested in amateur astronomy and was out looking at stars. I saw a boomerang shaped craft that looked a lot like a stealth fighter-bomber. It moved to the west and seemed to have electrical field lines showing from its rear. There was no noise at all. It moved out of sight, and within seconds a disk shaped craft appeared a hundred meters or so from me. I could see it was shiny metallic and had a triangular opening on its side. It was dark inside this opening from which a green funnel of light swept the ground below it until it focused right on me!
Then it momentarily stayed on me, as the craft hovered no more that 150 meters away. Then there was a beam of yellowish light that shot out and hit me, so bright I had to turn away! As I looked at the craft, again it slowly was moving away to the north. It was shimmered in the atmosphere, changed into two disks, and slowly moved out of sight.
The disk had the light funnel and a yellow beam. It seemed almost that the boomerang craft was chasing the disk, which seemed to materialize out of nothing.
Then on December 18, 2015, I was again outdoors at 3:00 and a golf ball size white light flew a few meters above me. I am a member of ursa, the Finnish amateur astronomy group, I asked them about these and they have no idea what they were. They even contacted the Finnish Air Force who stated they were not flying near my town then Note: The above image is a rendering. Thanks William Ahern.
Italy Triangle
Soverato — I was walking with my colleague when I noticed a black kite-shaped object hovering on the city at 8:30 AM, on February 12, 2015.
At first, I thought it was a helicopter, but then I heard no sound and the object fluttered all the time. I realized the object couldn’t be a helicopter and took a picture of it.
I arrived at my office, because it could be seen through the window. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Montenegro Lights
Igalo — I was at home watching TV and it became darker outside so I went out on balcony to check the weather on February 12, 2016. My attention was driven to the burning red-orange light just under the base of one thick black cloud. It was circle shaped and was large like flying balloon almost stationary at 800 meters altitude. It started an easy descent and then all the burning light disappeared and the object started moving slowly southwest. When it was above the hill opposite to my house and descended behind the hill. It was silent with red, green, white lights and did not look like a normal aircraft. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Mexico Objects
Boca Del Rio – My daughter and I were on the roof and saw the triangle coming from the mountains on December 12, 2015.
I began to take pictures as it flew up again and made a curve and headed east to the ocean. The cats and dogs are very nervous and barking and my cats jump on us.
We always see the shape with binoculars before we write it down and take pictures. Tonight there were eight ships. At 9.09 pm, 9.19 pm, 9;29, 10.52, 11. In addition, 11:18 and 11.19 small white discs flew east, at 9.19 pm, and 11.18 pm, a huge white/red triangle flew east .All the ships lights make circles at the bottom, red and white, and white or red and orange. Peru Face
The face of an alien was located in the desert soil of the Nazca desert near the Mandala.
There was not a UFO, but a picture of an alien in the desert of Nazca. All images are screen shots from Google Earth.

UK/England Light
Darlington — My wife likes to take sunset picture from our attic. She showed me the two she took tonight and I noticed the strange light and downloaded them to my PC.
What struck me as strange, being a pilot and photographer, is that this object moved. Not only did it move but also the internal lights changed from five to six. In addition, the six were not in what you could call a formation. In the pictures the object shape never changed, the orange glow. Given that only ten seconds elapsed between shots, this object must have been moving very fast.Thanks to MUFON CMS
Venezuela Cylinder
Ãtida— I took several photographs with mountains in the background on December 19, 2015.
I did not notice anything at the time. In reviewing the photos there was an elongated shaped object in the sky.
It is common to see planes in the area and in the other photographs in the series objects appeared. When I first saw it, I thought it was a plane image. Zooming in it is not plane. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Historic Gravitational Waves Rippled, But Left No Fireworks

Before confirmation of the first direct observation of gravitational waves rippled through the world, the search had already begun for visible signs of the event that generated the powerful waves in space.
Two separate groups scanned the sky in the region where the historic discovery originated, in hopes of spotting light generated by the event.
"This first attempt to detect visible light associated with gravitational waves was very challenging, but it paves the way to a whole new field of astrophysics," Edo Berger of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said in a statement. Berger was the principal investigator of a team that used the 4-meter Blanco telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile to make a detailed search for the origination of the gravitational waves identified by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).
Einstein's general theory of relativity predicts that the movement of massive bodies distorts the space-time through which they travel. Last week, scientists announced the first confirmed detection of such waves, produced by colliding black holes. The detection was kept under wraps until the results were verified and published in a scientific journal. But before announcing the news to the world, the scientists contacted two other teams already in place to follow up on any potential gravitational wave observations.
Berger's team made a detailed search of the region of sky where the preliminary signal was detected. The size of the area was daunting — 700 square degrees of sky, or about 2,800 times as large as the full moon — but astronomers combed the area thoroughly over a period of three weeks hoping to find a visible signal that corresponded to the crashing black holes. Although they did not detect any unusual bursts of visible light, their observations were used to place constraints on the brightness for future attempts.
At the same time, a second team used the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) in Hawaii to search for changes in the night sky. The instrument rapidly mapped the part of the sky where the signal originated. Computers then compared the new map to one made previously and identified any changed objects.
"We didn't find anything in our data that was likely related to the gravitational wave source," Stephen Smartt, director of the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast and leader of the Pan-STARRS follow-up team, said in a separate statement. "We discovered over 50 new sources that are normal supernovae — exploding stars that we find all the time. We didn't see any hint of unusual behavior."
Back in September, researchers didn't yet know that the gravitational waves detected by LIGO were from two merging black holes, Berger told Space.com in an email. Black holes don't radiate light directly, and LIGO scientist Vicky Kalogera told Space.com that it seems unlikely there would be any matter near a black hole binary that would give off secondary light. But that doesn't mean people aren't looking.
There are "several new papers that come up with exotic scenarios" that could produce light from a double black hole merger, Berger said in an email.
"These papers are mainly driven by the LIGO discovery and I expect that more will show up in the coming days and weeks," he said. "Whether any of these theoretical ideas turn out to be correct is unclear at the present. We will continue to observe future [binary black hole] mergers from LIGO to find out."
Like the observations made at Cerro Tololo, the Pan-STARR search will give scientists a little more information about what happened when the pair of black holes collided. Both teams stand ready to search again when LIGO makes its next detection. Gravitational waves can come from other sources besides a double black hole mergers, like exploding stars or the collision of two neutron stars (the dense, left-over cores of dead stars). Scientists know that most of those scenarios will generate light that telescopes could potentially detect.
"LIGO has opened a brand-new field of astronomy, and confirmation from facilities like Pan-STARRS will be very important to understanding them," Pan-STARRS Director Ken Chambers, an astronomer at the University of Hawaii, said.
