If there is one thing which can be said about the UFO phenomenon – and said with a fair degree of certainty – it’s that today we don’t get the classic “flaps” and “waves” that dominated the field of Ufology decades ago. I’m talking about the likes of Washington, D.C. 1952, the surge of UFO activity in 1973, and the Belgian “Flying Triangle” encounters of 1989-1990. There was also a notable flood of reports in the United Kingdom in 1967 – which is the subject of this particular article.
Declassified files from the British Ministry of Defense reveal that from 1959 to 1966 the MoD received close to 450 reports of UFO activity in U.K. airspace – the vast majority of reports coming from the public, and a much smaller number originating with the police and the military. And 1966 led the pack with 95 reports. However, things changed dramatically in 1967 when the MoD was overrun by UFO reports. The actual figure was 362, which averages out to almost one per day. Although, it should be noted that many of those reports came from October 1967, the month when the nation briefly went UFO crazy.
October 24 was the date upon which one of the most widely reported cases occurred. The witnesses were Roger Willey and Clifford Waycott, both police constables. It was shortly after 4:00 a.m., when the pair was approaching Brandis Corner, in the county of Devon, that something incredible appeared in the skies. 29-year-old Constable Wiley said of the object: “It looked like a star-spangled cross radiating points of light from all angles. It first appeared to the left of us, then went into an arc and dipped down and we thought it had landed.”
PC Waycott provided the following words: “When we got out to look, it started moving again. It was not an airplane or a helicopter, but it was as large as a conventional aircraft.”
And PC Willey wasn’t finished: “It seemed to be watching us and wouldn’t let us catch up. It was at various altitudes all the time, but mostly just above the trees. It had terrific acceleration. It seemed to know we were chasing it.” Such was their determination to keep the UFO in view, Willey floored the accelerator, reaching speeds of around 90 mph.
What appears to have been the same “thing” was also seen by Stella Crocker of Brandis Corner. She caught sight of what she called a “starry cross” hovering at barely 400 feet, and at roughly the same time as Willey and Waycott. Moving across to the east coast of England, Ursula Dommett was witness to a huge “four-pointed cross” heading out to sea. The time was shortly after the experience of Stella Crocker.
Then, on the night of October 25, retired Royal Air Force Wing-Commander Eric Cox saw what he termed “seven brilliant lights” as he drove along a stretch of Hampshire road. Cox was certain that “…they were three miles away at treetop height, flying in a V-formation. After about three minutes, they broke off and three went away. They just faded. Then the other four formed a perfect formation – just like a plus sign or a cross. They were certainly under some sort of control because the formation was so tight.”
Across the following two days, reports surfaced from Somerset, Devon, Gloucester, Oxfordshire, and Derbyshire. Indeed, in Glossop, Derbyshire alone, no less than 6 police constables witnessed a UFO hanging in the sky in a “pendulum”-like fashion. For the next few days, the U.K. was gripped by UFO mania. Even the Ministry of Defense took a proactive stance. Records released under the terms of the U.S. Freedom of Information Act state that “On 12 December 1967, the British Embassy was directed by London to further investigate the subject with a view to cooperating with the Russiansin observation teams for UFOs.”
Late 1967 was, without doubt, quite a time when it came to the issue of UFOs in the U.K.

Buzz Aldrin calls for human colony on Mars
Buzz Aldrin calls for human colony on Mars
Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon, thinks that mankind's next big objective in space should be to colonize Mars. Speaking at an event at the Science Museum in London, Aldrin projected that by 2040, Earthlings will set foot on the Red Planet, making way for an eventual space colony.
"To take the step, to take the movement, to take the action to begin to occupy -- is there anything bigger that humans could do on Earth than to leave and begin to occupy?" Aldrin said.
The astronaut, who set foot on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, said that getting to Mars would be the "easy part." Actually being able to sustain human life and establish a fully functioning colony would be the real challenge.
"I look at where we were 47 years ago, leading the world in space exploration, having six landings on the moon -- no one has done anything like that ever since," Armstrong said, lamenting the drop-off in human space exploration in the past few decades.
This isn't the first time that Aldrin has predicted that Mars colonization is next great frontier in space exploration. In fact, he has been advocating for sending humans to Mars since 1969. He's written about it in his book "Mission to Mars: My Vision for Space Exploration" and children's book, "Welcome to Mars." Last fall, he told CBS News' Face the Nation that "growing public apathy" and the enormous cost required to send humans to Mars have contributed to stalled efforts to send people to the Martian surface.
At the event in London on Sunday, Aldrin (wearing a "Destination: Mars" t-shirt) proposed a "perpetual, continuous cycling between Earth and Mars ... it gets more economical that way." The goal, he said, is "to occupy Mars -- not just visit and come back, but to keep Mars occupied. You go and you stay, and other people go, and you may come back."
He also discussed the mental toll that colonizing the planet could have on future space explorers. He said it would take a specific kind of individual to commit to settling on another planet for the rest of his or her life.
"I can see people making that decision. That's the most important thing," he said. "But I can also see things getting a little tough and they regret the decision and their functioning going down and that being disruptive to people."
Thousands of small, sharp, spearlike objects scattered throughout Easter Island have long been presumed to be evidence of massive warfare that led to the demise of its ancient civilization. But new evidence from archaeological investigations suggests that these objects, called mata'a, were not used as weapons at all.
Easter Island is a tiny landmass located about 2,300 miles (3,700 kilometers) off the coast of Chile. The remote volcanic island, also known as Rapa Nui, has been at the center of fierce debates in both academia and popular culture.
Polynesians first arrived on the island in the 13th century, and Rapa Nui's early inhabitants were famous for the enormous stone statues (called moai) that they built and placed on the coastline. More than 900 of these majestic statues were found on the island — so many that scholars have argued that there must have been tens of thousands of residents on Easter Island at one point — but so far, scientists and historians have not been able to agree on what caused the collapse of its society. [Image Gallery: The Walking Statues of Easter Island]
Popular belief held that massive internal warfare led to the population's catastrophic collapse. This grim outcome became a cautionary tale of the overuse of limited resources and eventual self-destruction. But, in the past decade or so, this understanding has been challenged by archaeologists whose research points to a different story — in which disease and slavery introduced by Europeans were the more likely cause of the Polynesian society's decline.
By carefully examining more than 400 mata'a, collecting photographs and analyzing their shape using a technique known as morphometric analysis, researchers have added new evidence to this line of thinking.
"The mata'a have lots of different shapes," said lead study author Carl Lipo, an anthropologist at Binghamton University in New York. "Some of them are roundish, some of them are square and some are kind of triangular."
The mata'a would not have made good weapons, Lipo said. For one, they are not sharp, and not all of the mata'a are pointed. They are also too thick and asymmetrical for piercing lethal wounds, and the wear patterns on these objects suggest that they were used to scrape and cut things, rather than puncture vital organs, he said.
These are images of various mata'a. Credit: Carl Lipo, Binghamton University
Moreover, other evidence of systemic warfare on the island is mysteriously absent, according to the researchers. For instance, archaeological digs on Easter Island have not uncovered traces of lethal skull trauma, severed limbs or mass graves, Lipo said. Nor did scientists find defensive fortlike structures common on other islands in the Pacific with a history of warfare, such as Fiji and New Zealand.
"There's no question that there's going to be competition on the island," Lipo told Live Science. "It is an island with finite resources. But the interesting thing is that it doesn't appear to have led to lethal violence."
All of this evidence suggests that the small population of 3,000 that was living on the island when Europeans first arrived in 1722 wasn't a relic of a much greater civilization. In fact, the Rapa Nui society probably flourished until well after initial European contact, according to Mara Mulrooney, an anthropologist at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, who also studies the Rapa Nui civilization but was not involved with the new research.
The researchers' "morphometric analysis of mata'a lends further empirical support to the notion that Rapa Nui is an example of success rather than 'collapse,'" Mulrooney told Live Science in an email.
The Rapa Nui mata'a were probably general-purpose tools used for agricultural practices such as lithic mulching, ritual sacrifice and tattooing, Lipo said. These peaceful activities actually make more sense in an archaeological context because on such a small, isolated island, people would have had to learn to deal with their problems and mitigate group-level competition, he added.
"You can't afford to escalate to killing because there's no way to escape the cost of killing," Lipo said. "Warfare would have killed everybody."
If the Rapa Nui civilization was successful on the remote island, the next question archaeologists need to answer is how these people created a sustainable community, Lipo said. "The mystery is actually more interesting now," he said, "because now, we have something to learn."
The new study was published online Feb. 17 in the journal Antiquity.

Pluto's North Pole Carved Up by Long Canyons (Photo)
Pluto's North Pole Carved Up by Long Canyons (Photo)
By Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor
A series of canyons snakes across Pluto's frigid north polar region, a gorgeous, newly released photo of the dwarf planet reveals.
The enhanced-color image, which was captured by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft during its historic Pluto flyby last July, shows a region informally named Lowell Regio, after Percival Lowell, the founder of Arizona's Lowell Observatory and the person who began the search that led to Pluto's discovery in 1930 (by American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh).
Several canyons run parallel across Lowell Regio, the photo reveals. The widest one measures about 45 miles (75 kilometers) across;. smaller, parallel canyons to the east and west of it are each about 6 miles (10 km) wide.
"The degraded walls of these canyons appear to be much older than the more sharply defined canyon systems elsewhere on Pluto, perhaps because the polar canyons are older and made of weaker material," NASA officials wrote in a description of the image, which was released Thursday (Feb. 25). "These canyons also appear to represent evidence for an ancient period of tectonics."
The photo also depicts a number of reddish pits, the largest of which are about 45 miles (70 km) across and 2.5 miles (4 km) deep. These mysterious features may indicate where subsurface ice melted and the ground fell in, NASA officials said.
The composition of Lowell Regio is intriguing and unusual. Some of the area's higher elevations show up in a yellow color not seen elsewhere on Pluto. The bluish-gray terrain in the image represents lower elevations and latitudes.
New Horizons' measurements revealed that Lowell Regio contains lots of methane ice and little nitrogen ice, mission team members said.
"One possibility is that the yellow terrains may correspond to older methane deposits that have been more processed by solar radiation than the bluer terrain," Will Grundy, New Horizons composition team lead from Lowell Observatory, said in a statement published with the image description.
New Horizons took the image on July 14 from a distance of 21,000 miles (33,900 km) from Pluto's surface, about 45 minutes before the probe's closest approach to the dwarf planet.
The spacecraft is now speeding toward a small object called 2014 MU69, which lies 1 billion miles (1.6 billion km) beyond Pluto. New Horizons will study 2014 MU69 up close on Jan. 1, 2019, if NASA approves and funds a proposed extended mission.
With the rise of millions of multi-rotor drones around the world, a “drone catcher system” or “bird abatement” seems an obvious necessity. People and organizations wishing to protect lives and property need a solution to force a landing or shoot down drones.
Using Eagles, Hawks for Robotic Falconry
It was recently reported that Eagles are being trained by police in Rotterdam, Netherlands to take out drones. In the following video, an Eagle takes out a drone, and it’s all captured by a camera aboard the drone.
Eagle Drone Catcher
Incidence of Bothersome Drones Increasing Exponentially
One obvious example of drone shenanigans is a hobbyist who flew a DJI Phantom helicopter over the White House last year. IndustryTap also recently reported on a professional skier who was nearly hit by a drone filming a ski competition.
Drone Capture Research & Development
Students at Michigan Tech are developing a “Robotic Falcon” to deal with renegade drones.
One of the current methods of gaining control over a renegade drone involves dropping a net over it.
Vancouver, BC – Exclusive new video published to YouTube on February 28, 2016, captures Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Utah State Director Erica Lukes in conversation with NewsInsideOut.com’s Jon Kelly for an insightful 90 minutes exploring consciousness, anthropological, sociological and technical dimensions of experiential contact. The producer of such mini-documentaries as “UFO Canyon,” and “UFO Mountain” emphasized contact as a bridging mechanism linking human society with other civilizations along with what he described as the almost-inevitable expression of advanced behavioral characteristics from within the mind of the experiencer.
Fiercely independent research meets the new wave of MUFON state director seeking access to resources and opportunities to develop effective teams who can participate in advancing the horizon of human understanding. The following partial transcript offers a preview of what listeners can expect to hear from this broadcast that originally aired January 16, 2016.
Erica Lukes: Jon, give us a little bit of background on the UFO and paranormal work that you’ve done and help us understand how we can become better at connecting.
Jon Kelly: My work in these fields emphasizes consciousness development. I was a person who got involved in a very serious yogic meditation path as a young adult. The classical yogic world is populated with all kinds of phenomena, a really long litany of phenomena. There are people who study the Vedas [possibly world’s oldest literature] who say that they containdescriptions of aircraft and spaceships as if those people had high tech.
Beyond any kind of nuts-and-bolts high tech the concepts of Siddhis and occult powers are part of the yogic culture. There’s this expectation that people will have breakthrough experiences when they perform the practices intensively. I’m not just talking about the Hatha Yoga that people enjoy, the athletic posture and stretching exercises that are very popular now. I’m talking about the other seven limbs that Patanjali talked about: Pratyahara, Pranayama etc. All these different practices, the internal practices.
When people do the internal practices as vigorously as they do the athletic work they will be stimulating this very high potential within them. It’s described as a Cosmic potential. When the Cosmic and the human get together there’s a really big party that follows.
When we think about the UFO phenomena we think about the cosmic travellers and the cosmic entities that are living in this multi-dimensional universe with us. There’s a simile. When we feel that our inner compass is guiding us to understand the cosmic within us, that our lives and our experiences in the material universe begin to reflect more of those qualities. We begin to feel that it’s as if there was a cosmic influence in our flow of our everyday experience and that all these remarkable things happen.
I had cited Dorothy Izatt in our earlier call as a housewife who lived here in the Vancouver region and was very successful in taping UFOs on 8mm film, thirty thousand feet of it. Her footage was scrutinized by professors at the University of British Columbia and her work was widely seen on U.S. television during the 1980s. Again, this is just a family person who lives in their home and when they look out the window there’s a UFO and they film it.
We see that this flow of their lifestyle has this cosmic duty. That person is like a bridge to other consciousness and civilizations. In the anthropological world people talk about the shaman as the bridge between society and the natural world or the universe and its potential. The medicine people in Native American tradition, the medicine person as the bridge, that their beingness, their existence embodies this participation in more than one dimension of being.
From those traditional viewpoints with a good medicine person the society would benefit. They would bring gifts to the society for the advancement of the people and the betterment of their quality of life.
The contactee, the person who acts as the facilitator in some way who, maybe just through their storytelling or maybe by bringing others with them to their contact experiences or by filming then publishing their work, they are also in engaging in that kind of bridging work. They are advancing the horizon of human understanding into new and exciting arenas with all kinds of different future potentials. But again the potential that I emphasize the most is the impact on consciousness development; that the contact event serves as a springboard into higher understanding and expanded functionality of mental performance, behavioral performance improvements.
I say that people will demonstrate some of the yogic siddhis. Their talents will emerge. This is part of the UFO literature, that people’s talents, their painterly or musical or other talents manifest in conjunction with their contact experiences.
This is aligned with what the yogis were saying, that the higher virtues can be awakened through contact with very intense consciousness’s, other maybe more advanced beings can stimulate us in ways just through their presence, to excite within us growth and development.
This is where I see the greatest opportunity. As a person who emphasizes the spiritual over many other things, for me, that’s where this leads. But it’s entirely reasonable to say that in terms of material science, there are long-standing claims already. Philip Corso wrote a book about fibre optics coming from UFO crash sites. There is an assumption that there are material science advances that will also, if they haven’t already arrived, they will come through these interactions.
People who are serious about creating legal and political structures that will support the long-term growth and development of human civilization interaction with other civilizations have authored works in the area of Exopolitics. People have put forwards all kinds of policies that describe a society that succeeds in those diplomatic interactions and integration occurs. They envision universal societies and treaties. That vision may be a little too far ahead of where I am in terms of my hands-on experience but it’s obvious for anyone who is familiar with the literature that greater thinkers have anticipated that there are going to be all kinds of potential benefits from that kind of growth and integration.
UFO Classified with host MUFON Utah State Director Erica Lukes airs Friday nights at 4 p.m. PST/7 p.m. EST starting March 4, 2016, on KCOR Digital Radio Network.

Many people capture illuminated, circular spots in their photographs. These spots are commonly known as orbs. Some people explain orbs as light reflected off surrounding surfaces; some explain them as light reflected off dust particles; and some explain them as spirits or other entities normally invisible to the human eye.
Little research has been done on this phenomenon, but Dr. Gary E. Schwartz and Adjunct Research Professor of Optical Sciences Katherine Creath at the University of Arizona did publish a study on orbs in 2005.
They said most orbs can be explained by the reflection of the camera’s flash off of objects on the scene, or off of dust. However, Schwartz and Creath acknowledged that some orbs seem to defy conventional optical explanation.
An orb captured in a BBC documentary, for example, moved slowly before disappearing. Schwartz and Creath write: “It is not possible to explain orbic objects such as these that move in dynamic and unpredictable paths as being caused by stray reflections. It is also not possible to explain many of them as being caused by dust particles in the air.”
An orb captured in a BBC documentary that was not caused by reflected light, according to University of Arizona researchers. The researchers could not provide a scientific explanation for the orb. (Screenshot/u.arizona.edu)
This documentary was filmed using a high-end infrared camera mounted on a tripod, eliminating some of the factors the researchers say often cause orbs in photos taken with inexpensive cameras.
Schwartz and Creath continue: “It is neither logical nor responsible at this point to conclude that every [orb] … observed worldwide can be explained by a conventional optical science mechanism such as stray reflection.”
In their view, however, most orbs can be explained by conventional optical science and new explanations for the anomalous orbs may develop.
Orbs are seen in the Regent Theater in Melbourne, Australia, on April 14, 2012, following a performance byShen Yun Performing Arts. Shen Yun revives 5,000 years of Chinese culture through story-based dance. This culture has a strong connection to spirituality and is believed to be divinely inspired, according to the New York-based company’s website. (Epoch Times)

In some spiritual traditions, people are said to have “auras” around them. Sometimes the auras are described as being various colors or at various levels of intensity, depending on the person’s characteristics.
Photos taken using special methods are said to show the energy people emanate, their auras.
In a previous article about auras, we looked at several theories to explain what auras might be, including (A.) biophotons released during injury, (B.) the skin’s moisture, (C.) body heat, and (D.) a type of energy communication.
Instead of using photon sensors, as is often done in the search for auras, he decided to see if the “aura” has enough power to push a pendulum. He used a torsion pendulum, which can be moved by subtle force, and repeatedly found that its momentum changed when placed above a person’s head.

Synesthesia is a condition in which a person’s senses are cross-wired, so to speak. Someone might hear blue or smell a sonata, for example.
A study published by University of Granada researchers in 2012 shows that healers who say they see people’s auras sometimes have synesthesia.
For example, they found that a local healer known as El Santón, has face-color synesthesia: “The brain region responsible for face recognition is associated with the color-processing region.”
“Not all ‘healers’ are synesthetes, but there is a higher prevalence of this phenomenon among them,” one of the researchers told Science Daily. “The same occurs among painters and artists, for example.”

UFOs Over Phoenix, Arizona On Feb 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News.
Date of sighting: February 2016 Location of sighting: Phoenix, Arizona, USA This is a cool catch. It took place where a legendary sighting occurred back in March of 1997, what was called the Phoenix lights. The smaller light seems to have fallen from the larger one. Like a drone coming out of a main ship, to observe more safely and close up. Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com Jason Hunter of Youtube states: This was sent to me by a viewer. Here is a UFO sighting happening right now in Phoenix. Viewer had to pull over to film in the darkness.
Don’t think UFO witnesses can be credible? Well one was credible enough to become President of the United States of America. Maybe that isn’t a great example, but Jimmy Carter did have a UFO encounter in Leary, Georgia, in 1969.
Herts Advertiser news desk revealed last week that a man in London Colney had seen some peculiar lights in the sky above St Albans at around 10.15pm on Sunday, August 29. He saw more than 10 of the objects over a short space of time and did not believe they were Chinese lanterns – which can often explain such UFO sightings – as they were travelling very fast and in a straight line. Rob Stichbury, who lives in the Roundwood Park area of Harpenden, saw something similar at around the same time that night.
He said: “The bright object was travelling extremely fast coming from the St Albans/Redbourn area. It seemed to be following the path of the Nicky Line and took less than 15 seconds to cover the horizon. “I only saw one and didn’t have time to get to the camera. Being a clear night it was instantly visible but certainly not a commercial plane as it was too large, bright and moving quite low and much faster than any other traffic. It disappeared in the direction of Luton Airport. Very strange indeed!” Ken Collins, of Salisbury Avenue, also reports seeing something strange in the sky travelling faster than the speed of aircraft heading towards Clarence Park that night.
Liz Gurgur, who lives in the Marshalswick area, said she saw exactly the same thing as the London Colney man earlier this summer as she was driving home one night. She said: “I thought it was unusual as they were all in a straight line, spaced apart equally and high up. I was amazed, especially since I was once watching this programme which said there was going to be a lot more UFO sightings and I laughed at it. “I’ve seen meteors before but this was different. If you imagine Christmas lights stringed up in a very straight line spaced equally apart, that’s what it looked like. But they were going quite fast at a constant speed, faster than a lantern or a kite. I’m sure there is a logical explanation for it but I don’t know what.”
Red lights Gill Welsman from Southdown, Harpenden, has reported another UFO sighting in mid-August. As she was driving past Harpenden Common, she said she became aware of red lights in the sky and when she arrived home she got out her binoculars to examine the lights further. She said: “I thought of hot air balloons but they were moving quicker. They were not as fast as a plane but travelling at helicopter speed. They weren’t as high as a plane, but well above the houses. “When I got home I was interested enough to go out and have a look and could still see them going across the sky. I got out my binoculars – they weren’t hot air balloons, but all I can say is they were like translucent oval shapes filled with quite a bright orange or red light. I must have seen at least 10 to 12 of them.”
Another person from Bernard’s Heath, who asked to remain anonymous, saw a similar occurrence on Saturday, September 4, at around midnight. The man reported hearing a faint thump and when he looked out the window to see where the noise had come from, he noticed what looked like a bright yellow/orange flame in the sky which moved at constant speed in the direction of Hemel Hempstead. More than 10 such lights followed, some travelling individually and others in small clusters. The man, who said he often looked at the sky before going to bed, said: “I have seen many things in the night sky but never anything like this.” Linda Lusby of Pondfield Crescent, St Albans, believes she may have a possible explanation for the string of recent sightings.
Along with her neighbours, she has been tracking the movements of the International Space Station and the times of her sightings correlate with what the London Colney resident described in last week’s paper. She said there had recently been a sighting practically every night for between one and four minutes over St Albans and that it was sometimes seen on more than one occasion. Mrs Lusby, who saw shooting stars at the same time one night, said: “It just suddenly appears very bright and moving across the sky, much bigger than any other star.”
To keep the frontal dimension to a minimum, we decided to put the pilot in a reclining position in our next project, so that he would remain within the wing contour. Transparent panels would be installed around the leading edge to provide visibility. The elevator system would be redesigned to avoid the reversal problems of the Ho I.
Few additional changes from the Ho I philosophy were planned, except to make it self-launching. We planned a tandem undercarriage with retractable front wheel, and steerable tail wheel.
The Ho II was also built in our home with some help from local glider club members, and a local motorcycle shop. It was ready after nine months, and taken to the Bonn-Hangelar airport in May 1935.
The first flight was made by towing it across the field at low altitude with a winch. We started with the c/g at the forward limit, and gradually moved it aft with trim weights. The aircraft remained docile, and fully controllable.
Although the problems with the "middle-effect" was not solved, the bell shaped lift distribution pattern used on the Ho II, had enabled us to make a large step forward with the stability and controllability of the flying wing. The landing gear was not entirely successful. The ground roll was unstable with the steerable tail wheel, and there was no shock absorber in the nose strut. The whole undercarriage was modified later. The unfamiliar reclining position, so popular in modern sailplanes, was not a good solution. It was difficult to see out while circling, and during slow flight, the pilots feet would be above the horizon, and higher than his head. Still, we did not make any changes to the cockpit, in order to better study the "middle-effect".
We were able to borrow a 60 HP Hirth engine, and after a three month long modification program, we were able to take off on our own. We had calculated that only 20 HP was needed for takeoff; the excess power of the Hirth engine allowed it to accelerate to 180 km by the time it reached the far end of the runway. The Ho II would climb to 3000 feet in two and a half minute.
The engine was sometimes shut down in flight to explore the aircraft's soaring capability. In such cases, the aircraft was landed without power, since the engine could not be restarted in flight.
The drag rudders were rarely used, since the absence of adverse yaw permitted coordinated turns with the ailerons alone.
Flying the Ho II was easy, and it was much used for practice flights by inexperienced pilots. I used it myself, to obtain my glider rating. Walter lost the propeller at low altitude, during a demonstration before representatives of the Air Ministry, but proceeded to make a routine landing, and roll to a stop before the hangar. A very convincing demonstration, we thought.
Our experiments with the "Habicht" was terminated when the borrowed engine had to be returned. In 1937 we modified the wing tips in an attempt to prove that the induced drag at the wing tip became negative with the bell shaped lift distribution pattern. The wing tips would move fore and aft, pivoting around a 45 offset hinge on the main spar, and serve as elevons. The system was never tried in flight.
For an unbiased report on the handling of a Ho II, here is a summary of Hanna Reitsch's impressions after flying the D-11-187 near Berlin in November 1938:
"This report does not reflect the many improvements on the later Horten models.
Comfort: Mediocre visibility: Poor entry/exit: Athletes only instrument panel: Fair gear operation: Only possible for long armed pilot's* steering friction: Unacceptable takeoff: Stick all the way back to break ground landing: Simple, with good glide path control stability: Difficult to assess, since the stick remains where it is put due to friction pitch response: Normal roll control: Unfriendly, some flutter in turbulence. The drag rudders are very sensitive, and moves the aircraft around both the roll and yaw axis. The harmony between the controls are poor. Drag rudder had to be used continuously during circling, and correct bank is difficult to establish*. Sideslip: Impossible stall/spin: No combination of control inputs could make a wing drop, with the stick all the way back, the speed stabilizes at 55 MPH or less in a gentle mush."

SIX Mysterious Bright Orbs Hover In The Sky Over Hythe UK – They Are WATCHING Us!
SIX Mysterious Bright Orbs Hover In The Sky Over Hythe UK – They Are WATCHING Us!
SIX mysterious bright ORBS have been witnessed circulating over Hythe and Folkestone, which many believe in the area that there are now unknown UFOs present around the Kent coast in England UK.
This strange sighting has left experts baffled and the Ministry of Defence, which runs training ranges nearby, have denied any involvement. One quite possible explanation for the phenomenon had been that these were military flares sent up to illuminate a mock battlefield, BUT intriguingly an MoD spokesman said there were NO military exercises taking place at the time – many witnesses in the area confirmed that these were no flares and appeared to be huge Orb- Like objects which streaked around the sky above them.
A Kent Unidentified Flying Objects Research Group spokesman said:
“The coastlines around East Kent and South Kent are major UFO areas.
“The towns in these areas have large amounts of UFO sightings on a continual basis.
“People are observing UFOs over the Thames Estuary and the English Channel all the time. UFO sightings in these areas have increased dramatically in the past few years.”
A similar event happened back in 2014 when 29-year-old Matt Law was driving back towards the Kent village of Dymchurch, when suddenly a string of UFO lights appeared in the sky in front of his car. As he got closer, they remained stationary and when he opened his window there was no sound from them. Bewildered, he said he watched the lights eventually fly off and disappear as if in some kind of controlled manner!
“I’m not saying it was a flying saucer – I’m a bit of a sceptic – but it was NO plane or helicopter,” he said.
U.I.P SUMMARY – The UK (my homeland) appears to be a bit of a hotbed of activity for UFO sightings, especially of these multi-coloured ORBS which are also being witnessed all over the world – in fact the Orbs are probably one of the main UFO sightings seen here in the UK at the moment – please see some of our reports below:

Is Blowing up an Asteroid With a Bomb Really a Good Idea?
Is Blowing up an Asteroid With a Bomb Really a Good Idea?

NASA
IN BRIEF
Russian scientists recently announced that they plan to send bombs to space to blow up asteroids, but what are the consequences if things go wrong?
Attacking Space
Recently, in a rather shocking announcement, Russian scientists announced they plan to shoot down space rocks. Or to be more literal, they want to blow up asteroids using Cold War-era missiles.
According to Russian state-owned news agency TASS, scientists want to retrofit intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) to target asteroids ranging in size from 20 to 50 meters that are at a dangerous proximity to Earth. The goal would be to deflect the space rocks, or destroy them, so that they cannot cause damage to our planet or its cities.
Though small, these asteroids can still cause significant damage and are sometimes only detected by observatories a few hours in advance of reaching Earth. In fact, sometimes, they aren’t detected at all.
Case in point, back in 2013, a 20-meter-wide meteor appeared in the sky over Chelyabinsk, Russia, shattering glass in buildings and leaving over 1,000 people injured. A 355-yard asteroid, dubbed Apophis, is expected to come close to Earth, and Russian scientists would like to test the plan on this asteroid.
Is it Really Necessary?
You may think larger asteroids are the threat, and where we should be focusing our attention, but according to Jason Kessler, the director of NASA’s efforts to find all asteroid threats, NASA calculates it has “discovered about 95% of the one kilometer or larger asteroids.” Also, if we eventually want to be able to tackle a larger global-killer, we will need to start with something small.
To that end, it is good that Russia has a plan in place, but are missiles appropriate?
For example, instead of blowing up the space rocks, NASA and the ESA plan to “shove them” away from the planet. This sounds a little less worrisome for a number of reasons.
To clarify, ICBM’s are the long range nukes that the USSR and USA had pointed at each other during the Cold War (in fact, they still have some pointed at each other). Russian scientists argue that typical rockets are not good candidates for seizing asteroids because they require too much lead time to meet an asteroid that might be detected only days before impact. And true enough, typical payload rockets take several days to fuel. On the other hand, ICBM’s can be launched at a moment’s notice.
The only setback for the Russian scientists are the costs of upgrading these ICBM’s to be asteroid killers.
Yet, Henry Melosh, an astrophysics professor at Purdue University, said that the Russian plan is “misguided and potentially dangerous.” In fact, there is a ban on nuclear explosions in space. Paul Miller, associate division leader of the Design Physics Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, added, “We know of no interest in the U.S. in repurposing ICBMs” and questioned their use in preventing asteroid impacts. Miller also said that, as these detection asteroid surveys improve, “they should provide decades of warning. In that case, a ready-to-launch capability is unnecessary.”
NASA is not saying much other than emphasizing their non-nuclear approach.
The major question, however, is what if something went wrong? For example, what if an explosion went off in low-Earth orbit? Radioactive material would be spread throughout the atmosphere with drastic consequences for the life below.
And even if it didn’t go off in orbit, and managed to reach its target, things could still go wrong. Astrometry expert Tatiana Galushina told The Independent: “Previously, as a preventive measure, it was proposed to destroy the asteroid on its approach to our planet, but this could lead to catastrophic consequences – a fall to Earth of the majority of the highly radioactive fragments.”
Galushina also pointed out that using nuclear weapons in space is against the terms of the Outer Space Treaty. However, she believes that in the case of a “real threat to humankind,” an exception to the rule would be made.
The atoms in the new structure are arranged in a hexagonal pattern as in graphene, but that is where the similarity ends. The three elements forming the new material all have different sizes; the bonds connecting the atoms are also different. As a result, the sides of the hexagons formed by these atoms are unequal, unlike in graphene.
IN BRIEF
Scientists are asserting that this new discovery could potentially upstage the world's greatest wonder material, graphene.
One-Atom Thick
What could be better than a material that’s super flexible, only one atom thick, and is 200 times stronger than steel? A material that’s equally strong and flexible, also only one atom thick, and inexpensive.
Scientists are asserting that this new discovery could potentially upstage the world’s greatest wonder material, graphene.
A physicist from the University of Kentucky is now working with scientists from Daimler in Germany as well as the Institute for Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) in Greece to create a new material made from elements such as silicon, boron, and nitrogen. These building blocks mean that the material will be less expensive, more stable, and ultimately better than graphene—in theory, at least.
“We used simulations to see if the bonds would break or disintegrate – it didn’t happen,” said Madhu Menon, a physicist in the UK Center for Computational Sciences. “We heated the material up to 1,000 degree Celsius and it still didn’t break.”
It sounds impressive, but to date, the material hasn’t actually been made. It only exists on computer simulations; however, scientists are working to rectify this now.
Theoretical Computations
Menon, Ernst Richter (from Daimler) and Antonis Andriotis (from IESL) have used state-of-the-art theoretical computations to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a one-atom thick, 2D material made from the aforementioned Earth-abundant elements, and the material could have possible applications beyond what graphene can currently do.
To clarify, graphene, for all its potential, has a big downside: It isn’t a semiconductor and, as a result, has very limited application in digital technology.
This led scientists to continue working on finding alternative materials, and that led to the discovery of three-layer materials known as transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), which can be used to to make digital processors. Unfortunately, while they can process more efficiently, they are thicker and not so abundant on Earth.
“We know that silicon-based technology is reaching its limit because we are putting more and more components together and making electronic processors more and more compact,” Menon said. “But we know that this cannot go on indefinitely; we need smarter materials.”
The calculations that studied the possibility of this new material were made on computers at the UK Center for Computational Sciences. The next step is to now to produce the same results the computer tests generated in a lab setting…and of course, actually make the material.
“We are very anxious for this to be made in the lab,” Menon said. “The ultimate test of any theory is experimental verification, so the sooner the better!”
"The Martian" was left stranded without any Oscars on Sunday night (Feb. 28) at the 88th Academy Awards.
Ridley Scott's science fiction film about a NASA astronaut (Matt Damon) being left for dead on Mars received seven nominations — including Best Picture and Best Actor — but ended the evening with no wins.
"It's pretty cool just to be nominated," wrote Andy Weir, author of the book on which the "The Martian" is based, in a post on Facebook. "Slowly but surely, science fiction is worming its way into popular culture and mainstream entertainment. I'm proud to be a small part of that." [Photos from 'The Martian': Matt Damon on 'Mars']
Still, it was other science fiction and dramatic films that ultimately brought home the Oscars.
Drew Goddard, who wrote the screenplay for "The Martian" based Weir's book, lost out to Charles Randolph and Adam McKay for "The Big Short." Visual effects artists Richard Stammers, Anders Langlands, Chris Lawrence and Steven Warner, who transformed Jordan into the Red Planet, were passed over in favor for team behind "Ex Machina."
Paul Massey, Mark Taylor and Mac Ruth, whose sound mixing on "The Martian" was recognized with a nomination, and Oliver Tarney, who was similarly honored for sound editing, lost to the sound engineers on "Mad Max: Fury Road." The same was true for "Martian" production designers Arthur Max and Celia Bobak.
Damon, who played Ares III crewmember Mark Watney, lost to a different type of frontiersman, Leonardo DiCaprioin "The Revenant," for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
And it was "Spotlight," about the real journalists who uncovered systemic child sex abuse in the Catholic church, that won the Academy Award for Best Picture, over the "The Martian."
The only other space-related film to be nominated this year, the animated short "We Can't Live Without Cosmos," was also left without an Oscar — the Academy Award going to "Bear Story." Directed by Konstantin Bronzit, "Cosmos" follows two cosmonauts and friends who try to do their best in their everyday training life to make their common dream a reality.
The evening, however, was not completely devoid of happy space-themed moments.
Josh Singer, who with Tom McCarthy was the writing team behind the film "Spotlight," won for best original screenplay. Singer is now working on the script for Universal Studios' Neil Armstrong biopic, based on historian James Hansen's biography "First Man," to be directed by Damien Chazelle ("Whiplash").
C-3PO, R2-D2 and BB-8 from "Star Wars" took to the stage to pay tribute to composer John Williams, who was nominated for his 50th Academy Award.
And Buzz Lightyear, the fictional space ranger (and sometimes International Space Station resident), was literally drawn onto the stage with his "Toy Story" co-star, Woody, to present the Oscar for best animated film.
Comedian Chris Rock used his platform as the ceremony's host to raise attention to the lack of diversity among this year's nominees. As part of this, Rock took Damon's place in a re-staged clip from "The Martian," where NASA Administrator Theodore Sanders (Jeff Daniels) and NASA public affairs officer Annie Montrose (Kristen Wiig) debated if it was worth spending $2500 "white dollars" to save a "black astronaut."
"The Martian" earlier won two Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor (Damon) in the same category.
