The glowing, symmetrical wings of the Hen 2-437 nebula shine in luminescent blue in a new image obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope.
Hen 2-437 is in a faint northern constellation called Vulpecula (the fox), which is located near Cygnus and Pegasus. The object was first found in 1946 by Rudolph Minkowski, who later discovered the more famous M2-9 Twin Jet Nebula.
"As shown by its remarkably beautiful appearance, Hen 2-437 is a bipolar nebula — the material ejected by the dying star has streamed out into space to create the two icy-blue lobes pictured here," European Space Agency officials said in a statement.
Hen 2-437 is known as a planetary nebula, which is one of the late stages in the lifetime of low-mass stars similar in size to the sun. When a star is in that stage, it grows into a red giant star and then sheds its outer layers into space. As fusion in the core ceases, the star remnants slowly cool as a white dwarf.

Although "planetary" is in the term "planetary nebula," the nebula is a collection of gas and dust and does not have anything to do with planet formation. The name is a misnomer based on observations by astronomer William Herschel, who discovered Uranus in 1781. He thought the blue-green tint of planetary nebulas he observed resembled the planet's hue.
Roughly 3,000 planetary nebulas have been discovered so far. Some of the more famous examples of these nebulas include the Ring Nebula (NGC 6720) in the constellation Lyra, and the Cat's Eye Nebula (NGC 6543) in the constellation Draco. Both of these nebulas were also imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope over the years.

A planet found at an extreme distance from its parent star may have been kicked out by a fellow planet.
Planet HD 106906b orbits 16 times as far from its parent star as Pluto lies from the sun. A new study of the far-flung alien planet reveals what appears to be a lopsided comet belt surrounding its parent star — a finding scientists say indicates a history of violence in the early planetary system.
"Since HD 106906b is very massive, the most likely culprit is another massive planet in the system that gravitationally jostled HD 106906b from its original orbit," Paul Kalas, an adjunct professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, told Space.com by email. Kalas and his team used the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) in Chile and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to identify the comet belt. He presented the results earlier this month at the American Astronomical Society's Extreme Solar Systems III conference in Hawaii.
Other possible explanations for HD 106906b's distant orbit include a disruptive interaction with a passing star, according to Kalas.
"If we find another planet, HD 106906c, then we could be more specific about the history of the system," Kalas said.
Kicked out
After a star collapses, planets form from the remaining disk of gas and dust around it. But the distant location of the enormous planet, which is about 11 times as massive as Jupiter, led to speculation that a different process could be responsible. When the planet was discovered last year, some scientists suggested that it might have formed like a star, from its own disk of debris.
Intrigued by the strange system, Kalas and his team decided to search for other large planets in the area, using GPI. Instead, they found a massive disk of dust and rocks roughly the width of the solar system's cometary reservoir, the Kuiper Belt, orbiting the star. According to Kalas, the clean-swept interior of the disk suggests that planets formed within it.
The team searched for another large planet near the parent star, but found nothing outside of a Uranus-size orbit.
Hubble telescope images of the star taken previously revealed that the disk of material is even wider than shown by GPI, the new study shows. Rather than being uniform, the belt is lopsided, suggesting that something stirred things up around the star.
Study co-author Ruth Murray-Clay, an assistant professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, told Space.com that the planet itself is too small to produce such a pronounced flaring without disrupting the thin disk along the way.
"That sort of structure could have been produced by another star that passed by the system in the past," she said.
A passing star also could have played a role in stretching the planet's distant orbit, the study said.
When the planet was booted out of the system, it may have grabbed up material as it passed through the cometary belt, picking up its own disk of debris, the researchers said. Follow-up studies of the system should reveal the presence of such a ring around the planet, they said.
But whether the planet will continue to circle its sun is still uncertain.
"These results are so new, we do not know if the planet is on a bound orbit," Kalas said.
The original discovery of the objects showed that the planet is moving in the same direction, and at the same speed, as the parent star, proving that it is not a background object. If scientists can confirm that the planet still orbits its parent star, it would have the most distant orbit of any known exoplanet.
"Now that we've shown the system is quite interesting because of the disturbed dust disk, there will be a renewed motivation to measure the position of the planet and star over time, and thereby estimate the orbit," Kalas said.
Direct imaging shows the cometary belt surrounding the star HD 106906, which is stretched out on one side. A distant planet sits more than 650 times the distance from the Earth to the sun. Hubble's image is shown in blue, with GPI zoomed in.

A tight-knit pair
During the question-and-answer session at the conference, Anne-Marie Lagrange, Senior Astronomer of France's National Center for Scientific Research, revealed another surprise about the system: that the host star is not one but two stars orbiting each other at less than half of Earth's distance from the sun. The pair of stars may have influenced the planet's journey in a way that a single star could not, said Lagrange, who is not part of Kalas' team. Her research has been accepted for publication in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
"There is a slight possibility that the planet formed closer to the star, beyond the ice line, and then moved down to within the chaotic zone of the binary, and was then ejected by one of the two binary components, after one or several close encounters," Lagrange said.
Murray-Clay agreed that the binary system could have played a role in kicking out the planet.
"Massive planets like HD 106906b are more easily ejected from a binary star system than from single star systems," she said. "Though we don't have direct evidence that the binary star helped eject this particular planet, it's a reasonable guess."
At the same time, the binary system does not discount the potential for another planet orbiting the two stars. Murray-Clay pointed out that the tight binary stars are too close to generate the inner hole in the ring structure identified by GPI.
"An additional massive body like another planet is required to explain the system," she said.

Dynamical upheaval in action
HD 106906b is a young planet, only about 13 million years old (compared to the Earth's 4.5-billion-year age). Because of its youth, astronomers were able to capture a near-infrared image of the planet by direct imaging.
"Direct imaging of exoplanets is accomplished in the near-infrared because young planets are still quite warm," Kalas said. "What we see in direct images is the heat emitted from such planets, not reflected light."
The more massive a planet is, the longer it takes to cool off. Kalas said the giant world may continue to radiate heat into space for billions of years.
The GPI Exoplanet Survey is targeting 600 young stars, all less than 100 million years old, to get a glimpse of how planetary systems evolve over time and to provide hints about how Earth's solar system evolved.
"The wonderful thing about direct imaging is that we can image exoplanets when they are young — we can find out where they were born and how they evolve," Kalas said.
With HD 106906b, the team can understand some of the dynamics that the early solar system may have gone through.
"I am excited about this system — we're seeing dynamic upheaval in action," Murray-Clay said.

Deep rumbles, unearthly moans, high pitched screeching: these are but a few elements of the alien soundscape researchers have now recorded for the first time at Challenger Deep, the deepest known valley on the seafloor.
One might expect Challenger Deep—which sits at the bottom of the Mariana trench some 36,000 feet beneath the ocean surface—to be a quiet place. But in reality, we know very little about what life is like down there: as with most places where the sun never shines, the Mariana trench is shrouded in mystery.
“Light does not propagate underwater very far,” oceanographer Bob Dziak of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) told Gizmodo. “But sound waves travel long distances through the Earth’s oceans. Acoustics is really the best way to get a good picture of deep ocean environments.”
Dziak would know. He’s the guy who led the recent effort to capture audio recordings from Challenger Deep. First, Dizak and his team had to design and build an instrument that could withstand the crushing 16,000 pounds-per-square-inch worth of pressure felt seven miles beneath the surface. Next, they developed a mooring system that would lower their audio gear—a titanium-encased hydrophone—at a slow, controlled speed, so that it could acclimate to the dramatic pressure buildup during its journey.
And after successfully planting a hydrophone in Challenger Deep, and making recordings for 23 straight days, Dziak’s team had to wait until November for the weather and ship traffic to clear so they could haul it back up. It was a major effort, but now, we’ve got the first soundbites from the deepest spot on the Earth’s surface to show for it.
They’re as haunting and otherworldly as you might imagine

A COUPLE were left stunned after they spotted what they believe was a UFO while in bed.
Terence MacDonell, 31, was with his girlfriend Natasha Samuels, 27, when they sighted the mysterious flying object over their home in Enfield, North London.
“When we looked closer, we realised it was actually a UFO,” said Terence, who works as a chef.

At first Terence dismissed the UFO as a bright light
Terence claims he first saw the UFO around a year ago but dismissed it as a bright star.
But he noticed the bright light in the sky kept appearing at night and on closer inspection he has come to the conclusion that it's actually a UFO.

This week, Coast to Coast radio “live” featured two mind bending but “credible” shows worth tuning into between the endless stream of mind numbing commercials – Deflation and Space Aliens.
We need to be prepared for the ‘demographic cliff’, says Harry Dent and the “great deflation” coming in 2014 and beyond. A large portion of the population is entering retirement.The Baby Boomers, are downsizing and spending less. This will weaken the economy and cause deflation to occur between 2014 and 2019, he forecasts. Expect to see Europe particularly hard hit.
Specifically, Dent sees the stock market rising in May 2014 to a new high between 17,000 to 17,200, but then it will crash down to a Dow of 5,000 to 5,500 in the next 2-3 years. He advises getting out of the market when it’s at its peak, and then using your cash to buy stocks, real estate or precious metals after the crash when prices will be cheap.
He believes stocks and other assets will be valued even lower when the cycle bottoms out in 2019-2020, before we begin to see a gradual uptick in the economy.

Documents that were leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden prove that the United States has been ruled by a race of tall, white space aliens who also assisted the rise of Nazi Germany in the 1930s.
A Federal Security Services (FSB) report on the nearly two million highly classified top-secret documents obtained from the United States Department of Defense (DOD) run National Security Agency-Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) by the American ex-patriot Edward Snowden states that this information is providing “incontrovertible proof” that an “alien/extraterrestrial intelligence agenda” is driving US domestic and international policy.
Snowden, who has been given asylum in Russia, leaked documents that a race of extraterestrial “tall whites” arrived on Earth, helped Nazi Germany build a fleet of advanced submarines in the 1930s, and then met in 1954 with President Dwight Eisenhower “where the ‘secret regime’ currently ruling over America was established.
This FSB report warns that the ‘Tall White’ agenda being implemented by the ‘secret regime’ ruling the United States calls for the creation of a global electronic surveillance system meant to hide all true information about their presence here on earth as they enter into what one of Snowden’s documents calls the ‘final phase’ of their end plan for total assimilation and world rule.”
The report further says that the U.S. government is embroiled in a “cataclysmic” power struggle between President Obama, who heads the alien shadow government, and some unknown force that opposed the U.S.-alien alliance.
“Most to be feared by Russian policy makers and authorities, this [FSB] report concludes, is if those opposing the ‘Tall White’ ‘secret regime’ ruled over by Obama have themselves aligned with another alien-extraterrestrial power themselves.”
Any good conspiracy theory needs a patina of truth, a bit of intellectual cover to camouflage the craziness. Paul Hellyer, the 1960s Canadian defense minister is now a fervent UFO activist. Hellyer allegedly has confirmed the accuracy of Snowden’s UFO leaks.

Scientists trace mystery ‘ alien signals ’ to distant galaxy
It seems that for the first time ever, astronomers have managed to successfully trace mysterious ‘fast radios bursts’, which are considered among the best contenders of signs of extraterrestrial intelligence, to a galaxy located ‘just’ six billion light years away
From 2007 until today, 17 of these anomalous radio signals have been discovered by astronomers who remain perplexed by the origin of the signals.
Each one of the FRBs (Fast radio bursts) comes from space lasting a few milliseconds at most, but emitting as much energy as our sun does in 10,000 years.
While ‘Alien civilizations’ are among the favorite explications of the mysterious radio signals among many, scientists have no idea what causes these mysterious bursts. In order to establish their exact origin, scientists had to estimate the distance to the ‘object’ where the FRBs originated from.
Together with a team of astronomers, Evan Keane from the UK’s Jodrell Bank Observatory the lead scientists in the group who published their findings in the Journal Nature, the most recent radio burst called FRB 150418 on April 18, 2015 were detected using the Parkes radio telescope in Australia, lasting less than one millisecond, and being the shortest of all discovered to date.
In order to pinpoint where the ‘Alien’ signal originated from, scientists needed a lot of time. The first step was locating the radio signal. Australia’s telescope located the radio afterglow in space after which a second telescope, stationed in Hawaii, helped trace the origin of the radio wave to an elliptical galaxy, believed to be relatively old, located six billion light years away.
However, Intelligent Alien civilizations aren’t the number one cause of the radio signals according to Evan Keane.
While not everyone wants to rule out ET calling Earth, Keane suggests that the anomalous radio waves most likely came from two colliding neutron stars, which according to the Jodrell Bank Observatory astronomer were orbiting each other before merging into one.
However, these radio signals have become more frequent throughout the years. Not long ago, the Parkes radio Telescope in Australia detected five radio bursts that could potentially indicate intelligent life elsewhere in the cosmos. According to reports from arXiv.org, an unprecedented double burst has recently shown up together with four more of the anomalous flashes. According to statements from the team of scientists, the double burst FRB (called 121002) discovered last year, had a “clear two-component profile”. Interestingly, the five signals detected follow the same pattern as its predecessors with one SMALL exception: one of them flashed twice, this little fact is extremely important since there has never, until now, been a double blast.
The twin-blast signal was separated by 2.4 milliseconds coming out of some sort of ‘eruption’ that happened, according to studies, 9 BILLION years ago in the Constellation Octans.
A Mathematical pattern behind the radio bursts
Last year, Michael Hippke of Germany’s Institute for Data Analysis set out to measure 11 radio bursts finding something extremely odd: The dispersion measures seem to follow a mathematical pattern. Hippke found that he dispersion measures are integer multiples of the same number, 187.5. The team calculated a 5 in 10,000 chance of the pattern being pure coincidence.
What is even more odd is the fact that NO ASTROPHYSICAL SYSTEMS that we know of can produce a similar stepwise distribution of dispersion measures.

Het nieuw gevonden sterrenstelsel kreeg de welluidde naam GN-z11, bevindt zich nog 200 miljoen lichtjaar verder dan de vorige recordhouder (EGSY8p7), en is opvallend helder. "Het is jonge sterren aan het vormen, veel meer dan we hadden verwacht. Een grote verrassing. We kenden het stelsel al wel, maar niemand had er ooit goed naar gekeken. Niemand dacht dat het zo ver weg kon staan. Juist omdat het zo helder was, werd het over het hoofd gezien", zegt onderzoeker Marijn Franx van de Sterrenwacht in Leiden (Nederland) die met twee collega's bij de waarneming was betrokken.
Het heelal was nog piepjong toen het stelsel zijn licht uitzond. Franx: "Als het universum nu een mens van gemiddelde leeftijd is, een 45-jarige, was het bij dit stelsel anderhalf jaar oud. Een dreumes. Het loopt net en kan nog niet praten."
GN-z11 is 25 keer kleiner dan onze Melkweg, en bezit maar één procent van de sterren in ons eigen stelsel. Maar het groeit snel aan met een sterrenproductie die twintig keer zo hoog is als in de Melkweg.

Franx is "nog steeds in verbazing" over de ontdekking. "Het is een dubbele verrassing. Dit is helderder dan verwacht en verder weg dan gedacht. Het is opmerkelijk dat zo'n helder stelsel in het vroege heelal blijkt te bestaan. We weten nog niet precies wat we hiermee moeten en hoe ver we nog terug kunnen. We moeten misschien de theorie aanpassen om te kijken hoe dit kan bestaan. Dat doet me bijzonder veel deugd, het maakt ons werk veel spannender."
De ontdekking staat volgende week in het belangrijke wetenschapsblad Astrophysical Journal.
De nieuwe recordhouder werd ontdekt met de ruimtetelescoop Hubble. Die wordt over een paar jaar vervangen door de James Webb, die nog scherper kijkt. Met die telescoop is het misschien mogelijk nog oudere stelsels te zien, van nog korter na de oerknal.

De Amerikaanse alien-jager Scott Waring stuitte tijdens een zoektocht naar een oude UFO op iets vreemds. Hij heeft naar eigen zeggen het vermiste vliegtuig MH370 gevonden in de buurt van Kaap de Goede Hoop in Zuid-Afrika. Dat schrijft de Britse Daily Mail.
De redacteur bij UFO Sightings Daily was oude satellietbeelden aan het bestuderen toen hij iets vreemds opmerkte. Voor de kust van Kaap de Goede Hoop dacht hij het silhouet van een Boeing 777 te zien.
Waring denkt dat het om de al bijna twee jaar vermiste vlucht MH370 van Malaysia Airlines moet gaan. “Het vliegtuig crashte, maar bleef intact,” zei hij. “Ik schat dat het zich vier tot negen meter onder water bevindt.”

Hij onderzocht een drie jaar oude UFO-melding uit het gebied toen hij een schaduw ontdekte in het water. “Ik heb in de vliegtuigindustrie gewerkt dus ik weet wanneer ik een vliegtuig zie,” aldus Waring.
De satellietfoto dateert van 27 juni 2015, terwijl het toestel op 8 maart 2014 verdween. De omgeving van Kaap de Goede Hoop staat bekend om zijn sterke stromingen en om die reden is het volgens Waring goed mogelijk dat het vliegtuig inmiddels alweer verplaatst is.

Vlucht MH370 was op 8 maart 2014 op weg van Kuala Lumpur naar Peking en verdween halverwege van de radar. Er zaten 239 mensen aan boord. Als er geen nieuwe aanwijzingen opduiken, eindigt de zoektocht naar de verdwenen vlucht waarschijnlijk rond juni.
Een wrakstuk dat eerder deze week in Mozambique aanspoelde, is mogelijk afkomstig van het toestel. Momenteel wordt onderzocht of het wrakstuk inderdaad kan worden gelinkt aan MH370.

The shadow resembled an airliner. I use to work on B-1 bombers back at Ellsworth SD, at a SAC during my USAF days. I know a plane when I see one. I certainly crawled onto them and in them enough.
Some sources on the Internet put a Boeing 777-200 fuel at having a range of 12,779 km, which is 1,000 more than it needs to get to Cape of Good Hope, however other sources states that the aircraft has a range of only 10,000 km, so thats a problem, because then it would crash about 300-500 km from Cape of Good Hope.
The Google Earth photo is dated 7/26/2015, and it crashed on 3/8/2014. Its had 16 months of moving about. The Cape of Good Hope is going to have powerful currents moving around it with deep crevices, and since the photo on Google is 8 months old, it could have moved 30-60km away if its semi-floating only 4-9 feet under the water. I know there is less than 1% of 1% of a chance that this is MH370, but its better than we had 5 minutes ago right? I will go to Twitter and tweet this to Malasian Airways @MAS to let them know. This bright green flash was seen on live Internet cam this week. It is seen at the 32 second mark in the video and looks like a UFO that came out of the parks ground and suddenly powered up and shot away at high speed. The bright flash was moving from the ground upward. Let me explain. The bottom of the green flash has a totally flat surface, yet the top has a mushroom cloud like explosion. For there to be a flat line on the bottom, the object would have to have ended or begun on that point, but since this flat green line is not on the ground but in the sky, it changes the direction of the object to moving upward. I have long suspected that the US government has allocated park land and increased it every few years, not for conservation, but because the US allows aliens to build bases under that land. Since the area has few roads, and fewer people, combined with tall mountains and tall pine trees, the likelihood of a UFO seen leaving or coming is extremely small. Scott C. Belleville can now be added to the list of towns in New Jersey that might just get visited by space aliens. Rich T., who lives in the Essex County suburb of approximately 35,000 people, says he’s not the type of person who is on the hunt for UFOs in a regular basis.
Rich, who resides in the township with his wife and children, says he doesn’t always sit on his lawn with binoculars in hand.
However, on one Saturday night, he and his wife saw an orb-like light flying overhead while they put their daughter in her car seat. Rich said the light flew silently from Bloomfield in the northeast direction. A second light joined the first light briefly before they all disappeared, Rich stated.
Rich described the light as something he has not seen before. He said it did not resemble a blimp, helicopter, or a plane. Even after his research about drones, sky lanterns, and other aerial objects, he still could not find one that matched the description of the orb, which, according to Rich, was flying against the wind.

A FORMER MoD policeman has broken a 27-year silence over a bizarre UFO sighting over a nuclear missile base he claims was covered up.
The whistleblower says he has kept quite for 27 years until the "identical" sighting
The whistleblower, who has not been named amid fears he could be accused of breaching the Official Secrets Act, came forward after a recent sighting of what he described as an identical UFO.
The man, now aged in his 70s, came forward after Vanessa Cloete revealed a picture she took of an alleged UFO hovering over the Charnham Park area of Hungerford in Berkshire.
The ex-officer claimed he and a colleague witnessed the same type of object fly down towards them above Greenham Common nuclear missile silos one night in the late 1980s.
Greenham Common, famous for its anti-nuclear protests, was used by the RAF and US Army Air Force, but it closed in 1993 after the Cold War.
The man claims he was made to sign the Official Secrets Act and told never to discuss the event and a US "Men in Black" suited officer swore them to secrecy.

He said next day he was grilled by top brass in the presence of a black-suited American and warned never to mention it.
He added: “It’s been on my mind ever since and the photograph brought it all back.”
regardless of what he saw, the image snapped last year was investigated by the world's biggest UFO research organisation.
The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), however, concluded it was likely an out of focus photograph of the planet Venus, which is often seen very bright with the naked eye.
MUFON provided similar examples of strange coloured orbs that were the result of blurred images of Venus.
A NEWMAINS man recorded an apparent UFO sighting last year.
Eric Cunningham posted in December 2015 that an unidentified flying object which was black underneath,and reflected a grey/blueish colour on the top side of the surface.
There have been six reported sightings of UFO’s reported over Lanarkshire since January last year and all sighting were uploaded to the Mutual UFO website.
The website allows users to post online if they believe they have witnessed an unidentified flying object and log their sightings.
Reports are then recorded with many users posting pictures of the UFO’s.
Mr Cunningham posted on the website that after he went outside his friends house on the afternoon of Deceember 10, he spotted the strange object.
He posted: “My attention was drawn to what I first thought was a large binliner or large bird, moving through the sky just to the right of the house.
“As I watched this object, it tilted at a 90 degree angle and moved forwards. Each time it did this I could see that it was black in colour underneath and grey to blueish on the upper surface.
“Although I was still thinking this was some sort of large plastic bag, I could tell that the object wasn’t being blown about in an erratic manner and was travelling in a direct course and pattern.
“It seemed to me that whilst moving, it was flipping and trying to rebalance itself against the upper head winds that were present, although there wasn’t any ground winds.
“I watched this for two to four minutes until it faded in the clouds and out of view.
“I shouted for my friend to come and see what I could see but unfortunately by the time he had arrived – and because of the clouds – he was unable to observe this.”
Hypersonic technology vehicles could revolutionize the way that we get around the globe. Research and testing is currently being carried out by several companies.
The Breakthrough
There are several hypersonic crafts under development, and they could greatly alter the way that we travel. Indeed, many of these designs have already provided valuable insights into how we can quickly and efficiently get from one side of the globe to the other.
For example, the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) is a prototype for an unmanned military aircraft, and the DARPA team behind the tech claims that it is the fastest ever built. According to Lockheed-Martin, the speeds that this craft was designed for are remarkable. They assert that, “at HTV-2 speeds, flight time between New York City and Los Angeles would be less than 12 minutes.”
In previously conducted tests, DARPA assert that the craft already managed to travel at 20 times the speed of sound during a test flight. And this isn’t just an anomaly. It maintained this speed for about three minutes before experiencing a technical problem…and then it crashing into the Pacific Ocean.
It was the second-ever test flight for this aircraft, and its splashdown occurred on Aug. 11, 2011.
Several days after the crash, DARPA director Regina Dugan confirmed the speeds, saying, “HTV-2 demonstrated stable, aerodynamically controlled Mach 20 hypersonic flight for approximately three minutes.” According to DARPA, the HTV-2 encountered an anomaly of undetermined origin, and the vehicle’s autonomous flight safety system engaged, directing the aircraft to initiate a controlled splashdown.
At the present juncture, reports say that no further tests will be made with the HTV-2, but not because we have given up. Rather, DARPA asserts that they have gathered the intelligence necessary from the HTV-2, and will use the data gathered to improve hypersonic flight.
DARPA reported that, despite the unplanned splashdown, they were able to procure more than nine minutes of data from the entire mission.
The Rational Behind the Tech
Conventional Prompt Global Strike is an advanced weapons program, of which the HTV-2 is a part. It is working to develop weapon systems that can reach any enemy target anywhere in the world within an hour. The program launches a rocket high into the atmosphere. The rocket then comes rushing back to the Earth’s surface at incredible speeds, generating temperatures up to 1,930 Celsius (3,500 degrees Fahrenheit) in the process.
In June of this year, the Chinese Defense Ministry confirmed their own fourth test of a hypersonic nuclear delivery vehicle (though a lot of information surrounding it is rumored). TheWashington Free Beacon reported that China’s defense ministry stated, “The scheduled scientific research and experiments in our territory are normal, and those tests are not targeted at any country and specific goals.”
Lt. Col. Jeffrey Pool, a Marine Corps spokesman, confirmed that the test took place. And he told the Washington Free Beacon:
We routinely monitor foreign defense activities and we are aware of this test. However, we don’t comment on our intelligence or assessments of foreign weapon systems. We encourage greater transparency regarding their defense investments and objectives to avoid miscalculation.
The hypersonic glide vehicle ‘Wu-14’ can reportedly travel up to 10 times the speed of sound. And hopefully, this tech can be used to for beneficial purposes related to travel and exploration.
The United States Air Force is developing hypersonic technology, and hypersonic missiles are expected in the next decade. Faster-than-sound drones and even manned vehicles may be a reality in the decades beyond.
Exploring the Hypersonic Frontier
After a half-century hiatus, hypersonic research is about to make a comeback in a big way. And that means super-fast missiles, surveillance drones, and even manned vehicles.
As early as 2020, the Air Force may have a series of prototypes ready for shakedown tests and operational experiments. According to Major General Thomas Masiello, commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory, the focus will be on incremental, progressive steps building to a viable infrastructure for hypersonic technology.
This represents a more prudent, restrained approach for the Air Force, in contrast to earlier attempts that aimed for a kind of spectacular “moonshot” to create a manned hypersonic system all at once.
“We’re looking for more singles, base hits, versus trying to go for a home run,” Maj. Gen. Masiello explains.
For example, in recent years, the Air Force has been experimenting with the X-51, a hypersonic cruise missile. Four test flights were conducted, with only a 50-50 success rate. Not terrible, but not great either; however, Maj. Gen. Masiello sees the two failed flights as more instructive and ultimately fruitful than the successes. “You have to build an environment that allows failure, because if you don’t, you’re not going to be pushing the boundaries of technology.”
So the failures have contributed to a greater understanding of the significant challenges attending hypersonic research. It means we’re getting closer to a functional, reliable hypersonic engine.
The Future of Warfare
Further down the road, in the 2030s (it is estimated), the technology will have matured from merely delivering warheads, to hypersonic autonomous surveillance and even armed drones, and fast, high-flying reconnaissance flights.

An even greater development would see manned fighters, bombers, and other Air Force assets outfitted with hypersonic engines, which could usher in a revolution in strategic warfare. Aircraft carriers, for instance, the backbone of American military might, would be rendered obsolete; floating air bases would no longer be required, since virtually anywhere in the world would be directly accessible in only a few hours from any land base in the United States.
Of course, that raises the specter of other powers developing the same technology, and having the same long reach and strategic capability. The United States is not the only player at the hypersonic game. Russia and China have their own programs underway, and it’s understandable why: it would change the strategic arithmetic.
America once led the way in hypersonic research, but the X-15 program was abandoned in the 1960s, and allowed to languish. So the new programs by the Air Force, if belated, are very welcome to the nation’s war-planners.
“Hypersonic capabilities are inevitable, they are going to happen,” Maj. Gen. Masiello warns. “If they don’t happen in the United States, they will happen in other countries first.”
Physicist Gerald Jackson thinks he can build an antimatter drive capable of taking us to the stars in less than a decade; all that’s needed is a little ready cash. To that end, his company, Hbar Technologies, is crowdfunding this lofty ambition with a Kickstarter campaign.
Have Antimatter, Will Travel
Gerald Jackson, a former physicist at Fermilab, has a big dream. He thinks that, given unlimited funds, we could have a fully demonstrable, antimatter-propelled spacecraft prototype ready in less than a decade.
But since he doesn’t possess unlimited economic resources, and since the likelihood of any government underwriting a prohibitively expensive program in antimatter propulsion technology is pretty remote, he’s decided to turn to the guerrilla funding tactics of the 21st century: He’s starting a Kickstarter campaign.
The idea is to raise $200,000 to crowdfund initial antimatter propulsion research for Jackson’s company, Hbar Technologies.
It’s an ambitious goal, but the potential rewards are staggering. The creation of a functional antimatter engine would mean drastically reduced travel times for space probes, both within the solar system and in the interstellar spaces beyond. With potential velocities of 40% of the speed of light, it would mean that the stars would suddenly come within our reach; a journey lasting as long as the voyage of the New Horizons probe to Pluto would take us, not merely to the outermost bodies in our solar system, but to whole systems of planets circling nearby stars.
Some experts assert that a more realistic estimate of such a spacecraft’s speed would be about 0.10c (10% of the speed of light), but even this would represent a fantastic speed that is utterly beyond anything we have today, and it would still put a probe in the Alpha Centauri system (the closest alien system to our own) in just 40 years.
The problem is twofold: devising a lightweight propulsion system that doesn’t outweigh the payload by orders of magnitude; and actually getting one’s hands on significant enough quantities of antimatter, a notoriously difficult substance to come across (which, incidentally, is fortunate for those of us made of normal matter).
Jackson thinks he has a solution to the first problem. “[M]y Hbar partner, physicist Steven Howe, and I came up with a very light propulsion system whose mass was comparative to the payload—an antimatter sail,” he explains.

Making antimatter
As far as the antimatter production problem—that may be a bit more difficult. Antimatter on Earth can only be found where humans have created it, deep in the hearts of the world’s most powerful particle accelerators—one antiproton at a time.
Jackson and Howe estimated that only 17 grams of antihydrogen would be required to power their antimatter drive, which doesn’t sound like much; however, less than one gram of the stuff has been produced, and none of it has been contained for much more than a day. So to sum: It’s very difficult to store, and its production would require a multi-billion dollar particle collider solely dedicated to churning out antimatter day after day—a fantastically expensive project.
Still, Jackson continues to dream, and it is of such stuff that the future is built. He thinks he’s solved the containment issue, and he wants cash to build a proof-of-concept. The rest, he hopes, will follow in due time.

Meet The Craft
Briefly, the spacecraft design outlined by Jackson and Howe is as follows—the probe will consist of four parts: A carbon “sail” coated with depleted uranium, a storage unit containing the requisite antihydrogen in solid form, an antiproton-powered electrical energy system, and a robotic imaging and instrument package (the science payload).
The actual motive principle behind the antimatter drive is a curious one. The antihydrogen is used to induce fission, and will produce 2 GeV (2 billion electron volts) of power—far in excess of anything standard chemical rockets generate. Upon striking a depleted uranium foil within the spacecraft, the antiprotons cause the uranium to fission, producing two “daughter” byproducts which are emitted in opposite directions.
One of these byproducts slams into the uranium-coated sail, imparting its momentum to it like wind bellying the cloth sails of a terrestrial clipper ship. The other byproduct is exhausted like a conventional rocket propellant—that process of “leaving something behind” quoted in the film Interstellar as the only way mankind has ever found of getting from one place to another in space. So there are really two propulsive engines at work simultaneously, which (theoretically) cause the spacecraft to accelerate rapidly to appreciable fractions of the speed of light.
It’s an interesting proposal, and well worth investigation. Perhaps, with Kickstarter funding, Jackson and Howe can start the serious business of making this science fictional technology a reality. That said, they estimate a further $100 million is needed to develop an Earth-based test to prove that the technology actually works…so that may only be something our progeny get to see.
“Crowdfunding may be a good way to show interest in the project when it comes time to find bigger investors or governmental support,” says Jackson.
After that, with sufficient will, and a couple of billion dollars burning a hole in one’s pocket, dispatching antimatter probes capable of 0.40c to the near stars shouldn’t be a problem at all.

In 1961, the KGB launched Project ISIS, a top-secret program designed to obtain alien technology. It culminated with the discovery of a 13,000 year-old alien body inside a tomb in the Giza Plateau in Egypt.
In the early years of the Cold War, Russian military officials feared the United States had gained a tactical advantage through reverse-engineering alien technology, presumably by studying UFOs such as the one that crashed near Roswell. Determined to possess advanced technology themselves, the Russians used their intelligence services to locate several places where extraterrestrial artifacts might be found.
One of these places was an ancient tomb located in the Giza Plateau in Egypt. They based their search on an old legend about the Tomb of the Visitor God.
As the story goes, two Bedouins accidentally stumbled upon the ancient resting place of an alien visitor. Immediately after entering the tomb, the two men fell ill and were hospitalized. Before they succumbed to the mysterious illness, they were able to give details about the tomb’s whereabouts.
The Egyptian authorities traded this information with their Russian allies, who wanted to reach the Tomb of the Visitor God before the CIA found out about it. As a result, they quickly organized a Project ISIS expedition. A group of Soviet Egyptologists, scientists and military personnel were assisted by their Egyptian counterparts in locating the tomb. This information is verified by Russian scientist Viktor Ivanvich, who had access to classified KGB documents:
There is no doubt that a small group of Russian scientists with military experts have discovered a tomb in Egypt in 1961. But in the documents it has never been revealed exactly what was found inside the sarcophagus. Only sources of the highest ranks of the KGB know that we have found the remains of an alien creature that died in Egypt 10,000 before Christ.”
The Russian-Egyptian expedition managed to uncover the tomb and reportedly secured numerous artifacts. According to a report to a senior officer of the KGB, 15 boxes of artifacts were taken from the Tomb of the Visitor God.
Hieroglyphic inscriptions were copied and translated. Among the inscriptions was a prophecy foretelling about the return of a winged alien god. The report also mentions the presence of a protective barrier:
During the inspection of the walls we noticed a strange repulsive force coming out of the walls. We could not find any scientific explanation.”

Hong Kong's irregular weather in recent months has apparently given us more than just frost and fake snow, as local astronomy enthusiast Alfred Lee can confirm.
According to Apple Daily, 28-year-old Lee was in Ma On Shan's Chevalier Garden when he spotted a strangely shaped and coloured cloud formation. After looking closer (or probably just squinting harder), the amateur meteorologist figured out that the formation was actually made up of two clouds: a lenticular cloud, and an iridescent cloud – both of which are rare in Hong Kong.
The clouds briefly – and fortuitously – lined up in front of the sun just long enough for Lee to photograph them, at around 4pm on Feb. 9. After submitting it to NASA, Lee's photo was chosen as the association's "Astronomy Photo of the Day".
Lee, who is reported to work in the banking industry, said he fell in love with astrophotography while studying in the United States, where he could see stars better due to the milder light pollution.
Lee's photography has apparently been recognised by NASA before, when he photographed the reflection of a partial solar eclipse at Pacific Place in 2009
