8 maart: Jupiter is in oppositie

UFO Shoots Past Aircraft While On Runway, Cape Town, South Africa, Feb 27, 2016, Video, UFO Sighting News
Date of sighting: Feb 27, 2016 Location of sighting: Cape Town, South Africa A reader (Wesley Saunders) recently said he caught some footage of a UFO at Cape Town, South Africa, just 28 miles from where I reported the MH370 jet, and 15 miles from where I reported finding a UFO on Google map. What I'm saying is there is some mysterious stuff happing at Cape Town, and its boiling down to the fact that its alien central. This jaw dropping footage of a dark UFO drone shooting past a Shackleton aircraft, which was first introduced back in 1951, but this one looks much newer. Its a beautiful aircraft and its easy to see why aliens would be interested in seeing this massive old style plane fly, but I believe this to be a alien drone, which focuses on anything within a few kilometers of it. It especially focuses on aircraft, since its in the air and higher up, but for some unknown reason, this one made a low pass near the ground over this plane. Cocky alien drone! Scott C. Waring www.ufosightingsdaily.com Wesley Saunders of Youtube states: While recording the Shackleton's ground run, at Ysterplaat in Cape Town, a UFO enters and exits the frame at high speed Date taken 27 Feb 2016.
Are UFOs and aliens real? Have we been visited by aliens? Are they here still?
"It seems that all Apollo and Gemini flights were followed, both at a distance and sometimes also quite closely, by space vehicles of extraterrestrial origin - flying saucers, or UFOs, if you want to call them by that name. Every time it occurred, the astronauts informed Mission Control, who then ordered absolute silence."
Former Chief of NASA Communications Systems Maurice Chatelain, Our Ancestors Came from Outer Space, 1979
Legends and artifacts dating back thousands of years have ignited man's imagination for decades to centuries with theories of ancient astronauts and alien beings from other planets. Sightings of "UFOs" or "unidentified flying objects" of varying sizes, shapes and other characteristics have been recorded around the world for hundreds of years, possibly thousands. In popular TV shows, it is claimed that "sky people" are purportedly recorded as having brought advanced culture to the hominids who have lived on this planet.
According to these legends, supposedly, this "first contact" had occurred previously, following cataclysm. Some stories relate this civilizing event to have happened several times during Earth's history. Geological, paleontological, anthropological and archaeological data reveal that there have indeed been many cataclysms on this earth, several on a global level, with climate change and mass extinction. The tales allegedly recount that after such a catastrophe, many surviving humans were reduced to the Stone Age but that more advanced humanoids descended from spacecraft and reestablished civilization. Are these claims true? Were these "sky people" aliens? Have there been "aliens" among us all along? Or is it all just an illusion?
"Have there been 'aliens' among us? Or is it all just an illusion?"
Skepticism is Warranted
In investigating the traditions, it becomes clear that there are a number of different types now compiled under the heading of legendary "sky people": humans, gods and, possibly, aliens. In our quest to discover the truth about this planet's history we find that "the gods" in general are not people or aliens but planetary bodies, such as the sun, moon, earth, planets, stars, etc., as well as elements in nature.
In this regard, TV shows like "Ancient Aliens" have failed to employ Occam's Razor in investigating what the ancient gods truly represented but have rushed to judgment to call them "aliens." For example, the Greek sun god Apollo is most assuredly just that: A sun god, not an alien flying through the sky in his chariot-spaceship.
"Apollo is a sun god, not an alien flying through the sky in his chariot-spaceship."
In addition, it is obvious from the legends that at least some of the "spacecraft" were of the probable previous earthly civilization, the "vimanas" and "flying machines" of lore. Other legends say that when the chaos descended these manmade "spacecraft" transported a number of inhabitants to elsewhere, which is speculated to be the moon, Mars, Venus or other destination, including inside the earth or under the sea. In inspecting these legends of "sky people," then, it would be prudent to suggest that, if they are true and not mythical, most if not all of these high-fliers were humans who may have developed the capacity to fly, to whatever extent.
There have also allegedly been found the skeletal remains of a number of bizarre humanoid and hominid races now unknown and extinct, indicating unexplained phenomena, although not necessarily "aliens" from another planet. In recent years, it has been asserted that there must have been many more hominid species than previously supposed, with the discovery of Homo floresiensis or "the hobbit," for example, in Indonesia, which thrived some 12,000 years ago, much later than was the supposed demise of such types of species. Obviously, none of these creatures is an "alien," however.
"None of these hominid creatures is an 'alien.'"
In the past, sightings of UFOs have been dismissed as the planet Venus or "swamp gas." Many sightings are explainable by natural or manmade phenomena, but some are not, and millions of people in the past few decades have reported seeing something that is clearly unidentifiable. Abduction by aliens has been ridiculed as hallucination, which, no doubt, it often is. But is it necessarily always?
The Belgium UFO Wave, Mexico City Eclipse and Phoenix Lights
From 1989 to 1990 in Belgium, a large object with lights was witnessed by hundreds of individuals, including police, air force personnel and air traffic controllers, as in the video below.
Skeptics claim that the Belgium UFO flap has been debunked and that the supposed "UFO" was a "polystyrene fake." Such explanations likely will fail to impress those who witnessed this purported hoax, including the policemen, air traffic controllers and pilots.
During an eclipse in Mexico City on July 11, 1991, a UFO was witnessed and filmed by hundreds of people as they gazed up at the sky.
A sighting similar to that in Belgium occurred in 1997, called the "Phoenix Lights," which has garnered a great deal of attention and was seen by a multitude of people, including air traffic personnel and major politicians. This story is so impressive that it is featured in National Geographic's "Secret History of UFOs," which provides a neutral and important chronicle of the various legends and sightings over the past several decades.
In this regard, the former governor of Arizona, Fife Symington, said of the Phoenix lights phenomenon, which he himself witnessed: "I suspect that, unless the Defense Department proves it otherwise, it was some form of an alien spacecraft."
"The former governor of Arizona said he suspects the Phoenix lights phenomenon was 'some form of an alien spacecraft.'"
As concerns possible alien abductions, NatGeoTV has a show called "Chasing UFOs," in which investigators travel around the country to interview witnesses and make observations. For example, "Chasing UFOs" highlights the story of purported UFO abductee Travis Walton, whose bizarre tale involved several witnesses to the UFO activity that preceded his alleged abduction. Although skeptics maintain doubt about it, Walton's story has stayed consistent throughout decades of investigation and exploration, including a sensationalized account in a major film, "Fire in the Sky" and such interviews as this one by NatGeo. I have communicated personally with Travis, and I am certainly in no position to label him a liar.
The "Experts" Speak
Over the past few decades, several excellent researchers have followed the lead of the fringe element and produced insights into the potential reality behind the tales and the sightings. Despite being ignored by mainstream media, these credentialed and credible experts have managed to evince effectively that UFOs are real, extraterrestrials are here and abductions are occurring, among other "alien" behavior. Some of these "experts," however, may be disinfo agents, and this field is rampant with fraud and hoaxes, so, again, caution must be taken.
In 2010, the respected scientist Dr. Michio Kaku put his considerable hat into the ring by stating definitely that some objects in the sky, about 5% of sightings, are clearly unidentified and that they behave oddly or "spookily." At that time, Dr. Kaku was discussing the book by researcher Leslie Kean entitled, UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record, which Kaku says is "bound to set the gold standard for UFO research." Relates Kaku:
We're talking about generals, we're talking about airforce pilots, we're talking about governors of states, that claim, "Hey, this is beyond our understanding of the laws of physics."
"We're talking about generals, airforce pilots and governors of states."
Kean's book contains dozens of these sightings by numerous sober individuals with positions of authority.
Astronauts and UFOs
Among the authorities and professionals who have witnessed UFOs are NASA astronauts, including Buzz Aldrin, Gordon Cooper, Donald Slayton, Robert White, Joseph A. Walker, Eugene Cernan, Ed White, James McDivitt, James Lovell, Frank Borman, Neil Armstrong, Maurice Chatelain and Scott Carpenter.
An article in Discovery magazine entitled "Apollo Astronaut Chats About UFO, Alien Belief" recounts that Apollo 14 astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell has discussed openly the much debated event at Roswell, New Mexico, and is a firm believer that the crash involved a spacecraft and aliens. Says Mitchell:
My major knowledge comes from what I call the old-timers, people who were at Roswell and subsequent who wanted to clear the things up and tell somebody credible even though they were under severe threats and things - this was back in the Roswell days. Having gone to the moon and being a local citizen out in the Roswell area some of them thought I would be a safe choice to tell their story to, which they did. Even though the government put real clamps on everybody, it got out anyhow.
Subsequent to that, I did take my story to the Pentagon - not NASA, but the Pentagon - and asked for a meeting with the Intelligence Committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and got it. And told them my story and what I know and eventually had that confirmed by the admiral that I spoke with, that indeed what I was saying was true....
...There was a UFO crash. There was an alien spacecraft.
"At Roswell, there was a UFO crash. There was an alien spacecraft."
Mitchell also discussed the Phoenix lights, saying "That wasn't our stuff," referring to human technology. The former astronaut further stated:
Three humongous craft flew over Phoenix, very slowly in the middle of the night that clearly were not - I happened to be on the phone with people out there when that happened and have had pictures of it - clearly those were not, to those of us who know aviation and spacecraft, clearly those were not local stuff, home-grown stuff.
In response to Mitchell's implications that the government is hiding these facts, it was reported:
Officials from NASA, however, were quick to play the comments down.
In a statement, a spokesman said: "NASA does not track UFOs. NASA is not involved in any sort of cover up about alien life on this planet or anywhere in the universe.
In this regard, it is important as well to take into account skeptical arguments against the purported presence of aliens and UFOs manned by intelligent beings in our solar system, as in these articles: "List of UFO-related hoaxes"; the Skeptical Enquirer article (3.1, 1978) by James Oberg entitled, "Astronaut 'UFO' Sightings"; and any number of articles purporting todebunk the Roswell incident.
NASA aside, the stories coming from Russian cosmonauts have been around for decades, as this old "Sightings" program demonstrates.
Pilot Sightings
Space does not permit for all the accounts by pilots, both military and commercial, who have witnessed UFO phenomena of some sort. See, e.g., "Pilot Sightings":
There have been over 3,500 documented sightings of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena by military, civilian and commercial airline pilots. These observations span the entire history of powered flight. Many of these cases come from declassified US government reports and investigations, international reports from official sources and the direct testimony of military and commercial pilots, air traffic controllers, and radar operators.
Governmental Testimony
As concerns high-ranking experts, in September 2005, a former Canadian defense minister under Pierre Trudeau made a stunning request to the parliament to begin public hearings concerning making peaceful relations with aliens, a diplomatic move called "Exopolitics." According to PRWEB:
On September 25, 2005, in a startling speech at the University of Toronto that caught the attention of mainstream newspapers and magazines, Paul Hellyer, Canadas Defence Minister from 1963-67 under Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Prime Minister Lester Pearson, publicly stated: "UFOs, are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head."
"UFOs are as real as the airplanes that fly over your head."
White House and Rockefeller Initiative
In 1997, White House correspondent Sarah McClendon released an article about a group of government-employed scientists and technicians who state definitively that UFOs and aliens are real and are from other worlds. This group claimed that intimidation is still rampant and people are afraid to come forward with evidence that the phenomenon is genuine.
"A group of government-employed scientists and technicians state definitively that UFOs and aliens are real and are from other worlds."
McClendon stated that the Clinton administration had "many briefings on the subject."Laurance Rockefeller, well known for his comments on visitors from outer space, was the Clinton advisor on the subject. It is claimed that a number of other government officials, including Al Gore, have been privy to these briefings and documents.
To force the issue, McClendon reported, the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence ("CSETI") was collecting a million signatures on a petition for a congressional hearing.
Philip Corso
McClendon also related the experience of Lt. Col. Philip Corso, who claimed to have worked on the back-engineering of alien ship parts from the Roswell crash, stating definitively that this work led to the development of a number of high tech creations of the past 50 years. "Corso and hundreds of others who work or have worked in secret defense and scientific agencies, are willing to swear under oath that alien craft are repeatedly penetrating our airspace," McClendon reported.
"Corso and hundreds of others who work or have worked in secret defense and scientific agencies are willing to swear under oath that alien craft are repeatedly penetrating our airspace."
In another stunning statement, University of New Hampshire professor of chemical oceanography, Ted Loder, PhD, stated definitively that the government is engaged with aliens, that there is "an interstellar war" going on, and that this is all being covered up by the brainwashing of the masses. "And hoaxers who build crop circles and debunk UFO sightings are actually paid off by the covert organization," Loder says.
"Aliens are allegedly making themselves known to wake up the populace because, 'We're polluting ourselves to death.'"
Loder also opines that the aliens are making themselves more known to try to wake up the populace because, "We're polluting ourselves to death." He claims that the U.S. government, using "Star Wars" and, presumably, other methods, has been able to shoot down UFOs. Loder also points out that by the government keeping this information secret, humanity is prevented from using alien technology that is free and clean, such that the environment is also suffering from this cover-up. He further declares that humankind is going to have to evolve in order to join any cosmic community, and that its attitudes towards religion, race, etc., will have to change.
Vatican Spokesman and Effect on Religion
In addition, after centuries of being occupied by "aliens" (sarcasm), the Vatican, represented by insider Monsignor Balducci, has appeared on national television in Italy to state that extraterrestrial contact is real. Balducci has said that extraterrestrials "are NOT demonic, they are NOT due to psychological impairment, they are NOT a case of entity attachment, but these encounters deserve to be studied carefully."
"The Vatican has appeared on national television in Italy to state that extraterrestrial contact is real."
Various researchers over the decades have claimed that the Vatican has been quite aware of "alien" presences for centuries, so this "admission" would not be exactly a surprise. What also is not a surprise is that, despite the probability of extraterrestrial life somewhere in the universe, the Catholic Church will cling to its claim that a Jewish carpenter "always remains the center of the Universe..." No worries at all for those who have been concerned that the revelation of the existence of alien life in the cosmos would somehow affect Earth's religions in a detrimental way! It seems that humans will always find a way to remain entrenched in their conditioning, no matter how strong the evidence against it.
"Until human beings reject their egocentric interpretations of the cosmos as found in myopic religions, they will not be viewed as 'intelligent life' by any possible extraterrestrials."
Yet, until human beings reject their egocentric interpretations of the cosmos as found in myopic religions, they will not be viewed as "intelligent life" by any possible extraterrestrials. As Lloyd Graham says, in Deceptions and Myths of the Bible:
Recently I heard a religious group discussing this, and one of them said if ever space travel became a possibility they would carry the Gospel message to the other planets - some of which may be billions of years in advance of us. What would the beings there think of it? Would they not be surprised to learn the mother of their Creator was a Jewish girl by the name of Mary, and that their world was created by her Son saying Let it be? No, if ever we go visiting cosmically we had better leave our provincialisms at home.
Since this was written, cosmic visiting is underway. Men can now go to the moon, and yet believe in Genesic Creation; they can transplant hearts but only "with the help of God," as one stated. Can we not see that this is but our way of thinking, and that the beings on other worlds never heard of this God, His mother, or His word-of-mouth creation?
"Would not beings on other planets be surprised to learn the mother of their Creator was a Jewish girl by the name of Mary and that their world was created by her Son saying, 'Let it be?'"
The comment about stubbornness applies to hardcore skeptics as well, who may feel very wise in rejecting outright the idea of any sort of UFO phenomenon. The facts are that UFOs - i.e., unidentified flying objects - do exist, and that chances are there is life elsewhere in the universe. The questions are: Are any UFOs "spacecraft" powered by "aliens?" And, has alien life thus found its way here, to this dinky little speck of space dust in the middle of nowhere?
Forget About Worshipping Aliens
It sounds great at first to think that there may be aliens among us, at least in the New Age arena, where the "aliens" always claim to be trying to help but never do much of anything. If such good-guy aliens are around, they certainly should not be worshipped as gods, anymore than cultures with advanced technology should be worshipped by inhabitants of jungles or remote islands.
"If aliens are around, they should not be worshipped as gods, anymore than cultures with advanced technology should be worshipped by inhabitants of jungles or remote islands."
Any "aliens" who may be lurking about on this planet must also be questioned as to why, if they are so advanced and evolved, they have allowed such a destructive scenario as what has been happening on Earth for the past several thousand years. They should not be easily let off the hook, not even if they claim "prime directive of non-interference." Who makes up such rules anyway? Why not interfere? Why not assist? Why allow people to crash into mountaintops and then cannibalize each other to survive?
"If aliens are real, why not interfere in human life? Why not assist? Why allow people to crash into mountaintops and then cannibalize each other to survive?"
If we were visiting another culture upon Earth and happened to stumble into internecine warfare, where children were being killed or some other atrocity being committed, would we stand back and say, "Oh, I can only watch as that young girl is burned by Napalm, because I'm under the order of prime directive?" That lazy and callous attitude of non-interference is one of the major problems on this planet, so why should we consider "aliens" who would behave in the same manner to be "advanced gods" worthy of worship?
While we may never need to castigate any alleged good-guy ETs who may eventually make themselves publicly known, we must also not revere them more highly than ourselves; for, it is we who have suffered as "spiritual soldiers" on this madcap planet, with little if any of their assistance. We will not recognize them as saviors, although we will certainly graciously welcome their assistance. Yet, if it were true that they have been engaged in stellar wars to keep this or any other planet safe from the bad guys, then we would certainly hail them as heroes, just as we would any human who puts her or his life on the line for the greater good. And then we would incorporate them into our lives as guests and members of the cosmic family. We would also express our gratitude that they have finally revealed themselves to be real, such that humankind is freed at last from its "island madness" and now knows that it is not alone and is not responsible for the maintenance of the entire universe.
Caution is Necessary
In addition, it is very wise to keep in mind that, while it is alleged that various national governments are covering up the UFO/alien phenomenon, it is also suggested thatsomeone in "the government" is using the phenomenon to manipulate the masses in some bizarre and ungainly manner. Within this alleged mind-control operation are "UFO cults," such as URANTIA and others that espouse mystical mumbo-jumbo.
In Messengers of Deception, French scientist Dr. Jacques Vallee, who served as the inspiration for the French scientist Francois Truffaut in Steven Spielberg's popular film "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," cautions about the problems with the UFO paradigm:
Racist philosophy. The pernicious suggestion that some of us on the Earth are of extraterrestrial descent and therefore constitute a "higher race." The dangers inherent in this belief should be obvious to anybody who hasn't forgotten the genocides of World War II, executed on the premise that some races were somehow 'purer' and better than others. (Let us note in passing that Adamski's Venusian... and many other alleged extreterrestrials were all tall Aryan types with long blond hair.)
Technical impotence. The statement that the birth of civilization on this planet resulted not from the genius and ability of mankind, but from repeated assistance by higher beings. Archaeologists and anthropologists are constantly aware of the marvelous skill with which the "Ancient Engineers" (to use L. Sprague de Camp's phrase) developed the tools of civilization on all continents. No appeal to superior powers is necessary to explain the achievements of early culture. The belief expressed by the contactees reveals a tragic lack of trust on their part in human ability.
Social utopia. Fantastic economic theories, including the belief that a "world economy" can be created overnight, and that democracy should be abolished in favor of utopian systems, usually dictatorial in their overlook.
"The belief that aliens birthed civilization on this planet reveals a tragic lack of trust in human ability."
Vallee's book also asks, "Is there an international UFO conspiracy? Are human programmers manipulating the UFO phenomenon?" To these questions, the late, great Jim Keith answers "yes," in his book Saucers of the Illuminati, which reveals that, indeed, human puppetmasters are behind much of the phenomenon. Keith recounts Vallee's work:
A remarkable UFO group was contacted by Jacques Vallee in Paris, France. The group is called the Order of Melchizedek, and it uses the Star of David for its emblem, and for its program espouses a one world government and the doing away with money and religion - except for the UFO-oriented sort of religion, I would imagine. The Order is cabalistic in its mystical practices, the Qabalah being an ancient form of Jewish mystical cosmology, a philosophy also employed by other occult groups such as the OTO and the Freemasons. Vallee notes the curious number of organizations that the head of the French Order of Melchizedek fronts, including the Front for Christian Liberation, Jesus People Europe, Jesus Revolution, the Charismatic Christian, the Christian Socialist Party, and Jew and Arab movements. Here revelant cross-currents include cabalism, the Order of Melchizedek, and the Star of David.
In this case, it appears that the same old terrestrial powerbrokers are up to their old tricks. The Order of Melchizedek, in fact, is named in the Bible as the highest priesthood, of whichAbraham and Jesus are made priests under Melchizedek. Therefore, "Melchizedek" is the highest figure in the universe under God, immediately conveying in the minds of believers ultimate authority. However, Melchizedek or "Righteous Molech" is demonstrably amythical character, the Molech or Moloch of the Old Testament, the god to whom children were sacrificed in burnt offering or holocaust by Phoenicians, Canaanites and Israelites, remade into the "high priest."
What Does It All Mean?
What all this rumination means is that there is some unexplained phenomenon going on. Despite the theories put forth by a number of individuals, the "evidence" of extraterrestrial contact dating back many thousands of years, including legends and bizarre artifacts, is very slippery and uncertain. The legends, in fact, are highly mythologized and in general cannot serve as "history." In more modern times, such stories become more straightforward and do seem to reflect encounters with actual, third-dimensional entities who could be termed "aliens."
"The 'evidence' of extraterrestrial contact dating back many thousands of years is very slippery and uncertain."
If any such phenomenon was occurring in antiquity, it is unlikely to have been much different than what we are experiencing today, which is very "fringey" and on the periphery of our reality. In other words, aliens were not landing en masse and mating with humans, building our edifices and other behaviors ascribed to them in the "ancient astronaut theory." Any accounts from antiquity of UFO sightings and other interactions likely would be much as the tales we hear today, again very peripheral, sketchy and nearly impossible to verify. In this regard, it would appear that supposed UFO sightings in antiquity indeed were recognized as something quite separate from the myths of gods, as can be seen from this "List of reported UFO sightings." Note that said list does not include any ancient myths, most assuredly not the "Anunnaki" or other familiar figures of religion in antiquity.
In my delving into this subject, the supposed "chariots of the gods" artifacts turn out to be unsustainable as concerns "aliens," because the Occam's Razor analysis reveals them to have mundane explanations. One fact I can reiterate is that the ancient gods were not aliens; these mythical figures are the personified results of thousands of years of observations of the natural world, including celestial bodies and earthly forces, such as the sun, moon, planets, stars, constellations, water, wind and so on.
"The ancient gods were not aliens but the personifications of the sun, moon, planets, stars, constellations, water, wind and so on."
Whether or not this phenomenon is real - and the many thousands of reports every year indicate that at least UFOs are "real," in the sense that a certain percentage of them are indeed unidentified flying objects - it has most definitely been seized upon by terrestrialbeings, i.e., humans, within the government or private sector who have used it to manipulate and play with the masses. Such behavior, no doubt, will continue, and the alleged reality of aliens will not be definite until they make themselves known, concretely, without all the shadowy nonsense. In the meantime, and if such an event ever occurs, these entities do not deserve worship of any sort, or even an amiable nod, until they prove they are friends of humankind.

Ham Radio Operator Hears American Airlines Pilot Report UFO near Nephi, Utah
Case File Information
Date of Event / Case File: 01/14/2016
Case File Details
Location of Sighting: Near Nephi, Utah
Date of Sighting: January 14, 2016 Time of Sighting: Between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST
DOPPLER RADAR PAINT NEAR LOCATION & TIME OF UFO SIGHTING.
Description:
This case was reported to me by Erica Lukes who is the director of MUFON for the state of Utah. She knows a radio show host who was scanning communications between aircraft and the FAA shortly after midnight on January 14, 2016. He heard a conversation between an airline pilot and Air Route Traffic Control. The pilot reported seeing an extremely long bright object that he estimated a mile wide to his right. The air traffic controller told him that he was looking in the direction of Nephi, Utah. Apparently the air traffic controller told the pilot that the object was not detected on radar. The object appeared to keep pace with the aircraft.
A Freedom of Information (FOIA) request was written to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). About six weeks later we received a response to the FOIA. The response consisted of radar returns, voice tapes and tower logs. The FAA is to be commended for their full and timely response to our request.
Research showed that the aircraft was American Airlines Flight Number 434 which was enroute from San Francisco, CA to Philadelphia, PA. The actual sighting time was between 12:12 and 12:13 AM MST on January 14, 2016. We were able to find segments of the conversation on the Air Traffic Control archives website, but much of conversation was deleted. One could hear the controller telling the pilot that Nephi, Utah was off to his right and the pilot acknowledging the transmission. However, the UFO report was not on the tape. The ham radio operator did not record the conversation so the “UFO report” could not be heard. He heard the conversation on the frequency of 127.95 mhz.
RADAR FLIGHT PATH OF AA FLIGHT 434 OVER UTAH JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT ON JAN 14, 2016.
Update: March 4, 2016. The voice tape obtain from the FAA (see above) does fill in some of the transmission missing from the tape from the Air Traffic Control archives website. The only thing not confirmed from the original transmission was the estimated size of the object. The airline crew described the object as a large orange square.
The aircraft was flying at 31,000 feet and 530 knots at the time of sighting. The aircraft was headed in a ENE direction. The radar shows a “dense” area of returns at approximately the 2 o’clock position. These returns are quite isolated and very numerous. They are likely not birds, angels, ground targets or anomalous propagation.
The time is from 12:08 to 12:15 AM which is the time that the crew saw the object(s). The map shows a large area of returns near and to the East of I-15. The returns are not traffic as the radar is too far away to detect ground targets.
The “zoom out” map shows the concentration of radar returns just to the SW of Nephi. This is in the position and time observed by airline crew. Note that most of the radar map is devoid of returns except in the area immediately to the SW of Nephi.
The Doppler radar map for Salt Lake City was also obtained. The map does show some returns to the Northeast of Nephi at the time of the sighting. The radar was operating in “clear air mode” which means that the gain is turned up making it more sensitive. (See radar map above.)
Figure 5 above shows the location of the 2 radar sites used in the analysis. One radar (Cedar City, UT) is about 155 miles to the SSW of sighting location. The other radar (Francis Peak, UT) is about 90 miles to the north. These returns were likely true objects and probably quite large given the distance from the radar sites.
RADAR SHOWING PATH OF AIRCRAFT & UNKNOWN RADAR RETURNS.
Preliminary Interpretation of Voice Tapes and Radar Data:
More analysis is being conducted for this case. My preliminary impressions follow:
1. Pilot reports a large unusual orange square of lights while flying at 31,000 feet. 2. The radar shows a dense area of returns at the exact position and time reported by the pilot. 3. These dense returns are well removed from radar sites. The closest site was about 90 miles to the north at Francis Peak, Utah. The other radar was located at Cedar City, Utah about 155 miles to the SSW. (See below) 4. These returns are not due to military operations. There are several restricted military operations areas (MOA’s) in Utah, but Nephi is well outside of these areas. 5. These returns are not drones. Regular drones would not be likely detected at the long distances from the radar sites. Military drones would be detected, but they would not be in the area. (See below.) 6. These returns are likely not due to anomalous propagation. Anomalous propagation generally starts closer to the radar antenna. 7. Birds, weather targets would not be detected in an isolated area that far from the radar sites. 8. Radar angels are sometimes observed. These are false targets, but there would not be that many of them that far removed from the radar sites. 9. Of course keep in mind that the pilot crew saw a large square area of orange lights so the radar and observation “corroborate” each other.

All across the world, we can find many amazing monuments, some gigantic, some a bit smaller, but many of them have one thing in common: “They have been carved using cutting edge technology”! A technology which we cannot replicate today.
The Great Sphinx
It has no inscriptions and there are tunnels and passages leading into this ancient monument which according to many researchers predates the ancient Egyptian Civilization.
This extraordinary ancient structure which measures 20 meters in height and 57 meters in length stands as the proud ‘guardian’ of the Great Pyramid and its companions in the Giza Plateau.
The enigmas surrounding the Sphinx are many, researchers have no idea who built the Sphinx, what for, how long it took to complete, and one of the most mysterious characteristics regarding the Sphinx is its original face and the unusual size of the head compared to the body.
According to a study presented at the International Conference of Geoarchaeology and Archaeomineralogy held in Sofia, authors Manichev Vjacheslav I. (Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and Alexander G.
Parkhomenko (Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) propose that the great sphinx is in fact around 800000 years old. Yes, 800000 years old!!!
Puma Punku
Situated 45 miles west of La Paz high in the Andes Mountains, lay the mysterious ancient ruins of Puma Punku. The megalithic stones found here are among the largest on the planet, measuring up to 26 feet long and weighing more than 100 tons each.
Puma Punku is a large temple complex or monument group that is part of the Tiwanaku Site in Bolivia.
The stones of Baalbek
This is one of the most amazing sights in the ancient world – the three 800-ton blocks of the mighty Trilithon, situated in a wall of the great acropolis of Baalbek in Lebanon. Michel Alouf, the former curator of the ruins, once wrote of the Trilithon: “in spite of their immense size, they [the Trilithon stones] are so accurately placed in position and so carefully joined, that it is almost impossible to insert a needle between them. No description will give an exact idea of the bewildering and stupefying effect of these tremendous blocks on the spectator”
So just how does current archaeology explain the existence of such immense artefacts? Officially Baalbek was built by the Romans in 27 BC, but folklore, from the indigenous inhabitants; speak of ancient giants in the area. The giants, called Titans by some, not the Romans, it was said, were responsible for the original construction. After all, the largest weights that the Romans could effectively manage were nowhere near the size of the Baalbek monoliths. To put it in perspective, the relatively light, 323-ton Laterano obelisk caused a decades-long transportation project from Egypt to Rome. The largest stone at Stonehenge weighs around 45 tons. Baalbek stones are over 36 times as heavy…
Archaeologists typically overlook the fact that experiments with stones much lighter than 800 tons have crushed the wooden rollers. And even if such a method was feasible, it would, by one estimate, have required the combined pulling power of 40,000 men to move the Stone of the South. Incredible indeed!!
Easter Island
The world was shocked to discover the famous Easter Island heads actually had bodies attached. Pictures have emerged showing their previously hidden torsos are also covered with intricate “tattoos”. These include crescents carved on the backs of the towering monoliths, which academics say represent the canoes of the Polynesians who made them..
Early European explorers received the impression that the Easter Island statues were idols, but no Moai is known to have borne the name of a divine personality, such as the creator god Makemake. All were known by the general name of aringa ora, the ‘living faces’ of the past. Captain Cook’s party heard the term ariki (chief) applied to some, while others had nicknames such as ‘Twisted Neck’, ‘Tattooed One’, and even ‘Bad Smell’ (due to the upturned nostrils).
The islanders have a legend that the statues were moved to the platforms and raised upright by the use of Mana, or mind power. Either the god Makemake, or priests or chiefs commanded them to walk or to float through the air, and according to one legend, use was made of a finely crafted stone sphere, 75 cm (2.5 ft) in diameter, called Te Pito Kura (‘the golden navel’ or ‘the navel of light’), to focus the Mana.
Legends about the use of levitation in the construction of megalithic monuments are found all over the world.
U.I.P SUMMARY –
We could go on for much longer showing you many evidence of ancient technology, there are so many all around us! The power of levitation using vibration does exist and has been used for centuries; obviously the elite will not share that secret with the people. Our science still can’t cut, move and fit huge rocks as well as the 12-foot ETs who came to Earth for gold 400,000 years ago from the planet Nibiru. The Nibirans cut stones as large as 10 tons with huge cutting tools run on power pulled from the earth. Yet you may ask who built the Sphinx 800000 years ago? My wildest guess would be a different race of aliens. There are very powerful ancient alien secrets hidden in 4 countries on this planet: Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Iran…No wonder the powers that be (Controlled by another race of aliens) have used phony excuses to invade and destroy 3 of them, apart from in Afghanistan, they have been unsuccessful to find anything yet.
According to the best estimates by astronomers from around the world, there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe. As for the parts of the universe we can’t see? Who knows. Within these billions (if not trillions) of galaxies are billions (if not trillions) of stars… Quite mind-altering, isn’t it? It is literally beyond our ability to comprehend.
1. New research coming from a team of international scientists led by Professor Heidi Jo Newberg of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute suggests that the Milky Way Galaxy is at least 50 percent larger than what is commonly believed. These estimates are based on new findings that reveal our galaxy is contoured into multiple concentric ripples. This means that the Milky Way Galaxy is not 100,000 light years across, but at least 150,000 light years across.(source)
2. At the center of the galaxy is a giant black hole which is billions of times as massive as the sun. Just imagine that… Here are a few images that will help you put that fact into perspective. Scientists believe that this black hole weighs as much as 4 million of our suns put together. Black holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects found in outer space. Scientists don’t know what they are, but theories range from portals to other dimensions and more. The first black hole was discovered in 1971. Our galaxy is hurtling through space, spinning around a giant black hole, while our sun and solar system travel with it. The solar system is travelling at speeds of approximately 515,000 miles per hour. Even at this speed, our solar system would take about 230 million years to travel all the way around the galaxy.
3. As mentioned in point #2, our galaxy is hurtling through the universe, and it’s not the only one. There are billions of galaxies out there, all doing the same thing. This massive collection of stars is constantly crashing into one another.
4. Our galaxy is home to (possibly) a number of Earth-like planets. Quite a few Earth-like planets have already been discovered, but a group of researchers from Australia and Denmark recently calculated that there are hundreds of billions of Earth-like plants in the Milky Way Galaxy:
Using NASA data, astronomers have calculated for the first time that in our galaxy alone, there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone. (source)
It’s important to note that not all planets have to be Earth-like in order to support extraterrestrial life. Who knows what conditions are required for other lifeforms to exist? Their biological makeup could be completely different from ours, and it seems like pure hubris to assume otherwise.
The general, overwhelming scientific consensus is no, we are not alone (source), but not all agree that intelligent extraterrestrial life is, and has been, visiting our planet. That being said, many prestigious scientists, astronauts, academics, and more believe that the evidence for extraterrestrial visitation is quite solid. You can read more about that here.
5.Apparently, there is a strong possibility that the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will collide in about 2 billion years. That collision will last approximately 5 billion years.(The Milky Way [volume in Explore the Universe encyclopedic set]. 2010. Chicago, IL: World Book.)
6. Many scientists believe that the Milky Way is one of the oldest galaxies in the universe. Estimates place the formation of our galaxy at approximately 13.6 billion years ago, and the ‘Big Bang’ was said to occur 13.7 billion years ago.(Trammel, Howard K. 2010. Galaxies (A True Book). New York, NY: Scholastic Inc.)
7. Approximately 90 percent of the Milky Way is invisible. Stars and dust make up only 10 percent of the total mass of the galaxy, so where is the other 90 percent? Whatever it is, it does have mass, and scientists are calling it Dark Matter.(source)
There was an interesting announcement this weekend (October 30, 2015) about a new project called UFO Detection and TrAcking, aka UFODATA. The project’s team says it wants to make the study of UFO phenomena “a systematic, rigorous science” and to design, build and deploy a global network of automated surveillance stations that will monitor the skies for UFOs full-time.
Although it’s organized as a separate, all-volunteer, nonprofit organization, UFODATA appears to be an offshoot of the Center for UFO Studies. That center was founded in the 1970s by J. Allen Hynek, the professional astronomer who coined the phrase close encounters. Hynek had earlier been drafted to serve as a consultant to a U.S. Air Force study, begun in 1952, to investigate unidentified flying objects. This was the famous Project Blue Book. Hynek’s bio at the Center for UFO studies says he was at first skeptical about the UFO phenomenon, but later, it seems, he became profoundly curious. When he established the Center for UFO Studies in 1973, Hynek wanted to bring together scientists and other highly-trained technical experts, who would work to solve what he saw as the UFO enigma.
Now, 42 years later, UFODATA wants to do exactly the same thing, with the help of a big new idea.
Dr. Mark Rodeghier – whose PhD is in sociology, and who makes his living as a consultant in statistical analysis and survey research – is head of the all-volunteer Center for UFO Studies. He is helping to drive the push to making UFO studies a more rigorous science. Image via University of Illinois Alumni Association.
Mark Rodeghier, UFODATA board member and scientific director and president of the Center for UFO Studies, a position he’s held since Hynek’s death in 1986, said in an October 30 statement:
It has become clear that any breakthrough in our understanding of the UFO phenomenon will require a break from the past. Witness testimony, photos and videos, and government documents have taken us only so far; instead, we need to record and study UFOs directly, as other sciences do with their own specific objects.
Of course, this is a daunting task, but it is made conceivable by advances in technology, software, communication capabilities, and power sources.
Another prominent board member is Leslie Kean, an investigative journalist and author of the New York Times bestseller UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record. In October, Leslie Kean made a couple of pre-announcements in print leading up to this weekend’s official announcement from the UFODATA project itself. One – published October 14, 2015 – was huffingtonpost.com on what she called the launch of a new UFO science. Also in October, 2015, Kean wrote at pyschologytomorrowmagazine.com on the UFO taboo, saying:
The subject of UFOs is not a simple issue to address. It is one of the most misunderstood scientific problems we face today – so much so, that many scientists do not even consider it to be in the category of a problem worth studying. There is a great deal of misinformation and prejudice against it, confusion about what a UFO actually is (and isn’t), and attitudes of ridicule have permeated the culture for decades.
In fact, taking UFOs seriously has become taboo.
I felt that taboo, too, before deciding to write this post.
The great majority of UFO reports can be easily identified as misperceived stars and planets, balloons, other atmospheric phenomena, or birds or insects in cell phone photos, among many terrestrial sources. The UFODATA project instead is interested in the small, but potentially significant, remainder of reports that cannot be so easily explained.
Importantly, the project does not assume that these unexplained reports are caused by extraterrestrial intelligence; the project has the goal of simply learning more about the characteristics of truly puzzling sightings and following the science, wherever it leads.
Here’s the big new idea. UFODATA wants to deploy a crowd-funded global network of automated surveillance stations that would monitor the skies continuously for UFOs. They would place them in known UFO hotspots such as those in the western United States and in Hessdalen, Norway. As unidentified objects are spotted, the team then will collect as much physical data about them as possible. They want to know, for example, the type and intensity of radiation being emitted by the UFO and its surroundings, and how that light might change over the time it’s being observed. They speak of the simultaneous use of:
… photometric, spectroscopic, magnetometric and radio-spectrometric (VLF-ELF and UHF) instrumentation.
An interesting aspect of this project is the scale. The UFODATA team is talking about:
… taking advantage of the internet and new surveillance technologies to build an entire network of stations that can take multiple sophisticated measurements simultaneously.
On its website, UFODATA says the cost of developing a prototype station, including not just the equipment, camera, and sensors, but also software, construction and testing, will be “several tens of thousands of dollars.” Subsequent stations will cost less.
The team says its first goal is to raise enough money to design and construct one prototype station, and they hope that prototype phase will last one year. After that, the team wants to deploy the first station and begin construction of as many additional stations as funding permits.
The project, at this time, is not funded. But the team hopes it can use crowd-funding to solve that problem. UFODATA’s FAQ page says:
Regrettably, because of the authoritative taboo on taking UFOs seriously, official funding for the systematic study of UAP is essentially non-existent, in both the USA and Europe. This was true in the past and is still true today. So even if the scientific community was open and willing to examine scientific evidence for UFOs – and we know that some scientists are – it takes resources to do the research to provide that evidence.
Crowd-funding has proven to be an invaluable tool to raise money for projects that, for whatever reason, are not deemed worthy of research grants from the authorities. We know millions of people worldwide are very interested in UFOs, and would like to find out what they are, just as we would.
The team says it plans to launch its first crowd-funding campaign in a few months, but in the meantime you can donate.
Potentially habitable exoplanets. Image posted October 14, 2015 by the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo. Read more about these exoplanets. In this case, what they mean by ‘habitable’ includes single-celled microorganisms and other basic life.
Bottom line: UFODATA wants to make UFO studies a science. It wants to design, build and deploy a global network of automated surveillance stations to watch for UFOs full-time.

20 Percent of Universe’s Normal Matter Exists in Dark Cosmic Voids
20 Percent of Universe’s Normal Matter Exists in Dark Cosmic Voids
IN BRIEF
The Illustris simulation recently revealed that galaxies are filaments stretched out over enormous voids, wherein supermassive black holes send vast swaths of matter.
The Cosmic Web
The most recent measurements of what makes up the universe has shown that normal matter come in at just 4.9%. To be clear, this means that planet, stars, and everything that we see around us is less than 5% of the universe.
So, where is the rest of it?
Well, dark matter comes in at 26.8% and there’s 68.3% dark energy. Now, new measurements add to our understanding of the scale of the universe and what it is made of.
A team of scientists from the Institute of Astro- and Particle Physics at the University of Innsbruck, Austria has published a paper in the Monthly notices of the Royal Astronomical Society that finds that enormous voids which galaxies are stretched around comprise about 20% of the mass of the universe, with galaxies making up just 1/500th of its volume.
The team did this with the help of data from the Illustris cosmological simulation project, which simulates the evolution and formation of galaxies. The simulation shows that galaxies are like filaments stretched around large voids, resembling a “cosmic web.” The researchers used this data to measure the mass and volume of these galaxies.
In the simulation, the universe is portrayed as a cube that measures about 350 light-years on all sides, and is roughly 12 million years old. I
The researchers found that, while 50% of the universe’s total mass resides within the galaxies, it is compressed into a volume that’s only 0.2% of the universe. 44% of the mass is found in the enveloping filaments, which means the remaining 6% of universal mass resides in the vast voids that make up 80% of the volume.
Into the Void
The team of researchers also found that about 20% of normal matter may have been transported into the void. They suspect this may have been caused by supermassive black holes. In other words, 20% of the universe may rest in expansive, unpopulated black voids—proverbial dead zones.
When matter that falls into the black holes, it gets converted into energy, that energy is then transferred to surrounding gas, leading to a massive outflow of matter that stretches out for thousands of light-years past the host galaxy.
Research team leader Dr. Markus Haider explains that the “simulation, one of the most sophisticated ever run, suggests that the black holes at the centre of every galaxy are helping to send matter into the loneliest places in the universe. What we want to do now is refine our model, and confirm these initial findings.”
Illustris is continuing to run new simulations as researchers seek to understand black hole output and the matter in the void.
Huge UFO Just Entered Our Solar System — Astronomers Release Images
Huge UFO Just Entered Our Solar System — Astronomers Release Images
There was excitement in the online UFO community earlier this week after UFO hunters announced that images captured by amateur astronomers show a giant alien structure that entered our solar system very recently.
The giant alien structure, which was spotted approaching Jupiter’s moon Europa, resembles an interstellar mothership or an intergalactic UFO armada, according to UFO hunters.
Online UFO hunters claim that the images captured recently by two amateur astronomers working independently suggest that a major expeditionary effort mounted by a technologically advanced spacefaring alien race from a distant planetary system may have arrived in our solar system.
The alien UFO mega structure, believed to be either a giant alien mothership or a fleet of UFOs, was allegedly spotted exploring our section of the galaxy near Jupiter’s moon Europa.
The evidence, according to YouTube UFO hunters Secureteam10, comes from a series of imagescaptured by Louis Read, an experienced amateur sky watcher from the city of Bristol in the UK.
The images, uploaded to YouTube on February 18, 2016, by Secureteam10, allegedly show a massive artificial structure approaching Europa, one of planet Jupiter’s 67 moons and the sixth largest moon in our solar system, which was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610.
The amateur astronomer captured the incredible images using a Canon 650D camera with a 7D-300mm telescopic lens mounted on a tripod in his private backyard garden in Bristol, UK.
Hours after receiving Louis Read’s images and uploading them to YouTube, Secureteam10 announced to their Twitter followers that they had received new images from a separate source that appear to confirm the authenticity of the first set of images. Secureteam10 uploaded the alleged new images to their Twitter account (see images below).
Same object spotted near Jupiter from different source who just sent in this image, along with the original.
According to Secureteam10, this is the first time that the structure has been observed near planet Jupiter and its system of satellites. It is also the first time it has been observed in our solar system.
Louis Read was so astonished when he spotted the unusual structure that he decided to send the images to Secureteam10 for a second opinion.
After Secureteam10 received the images and conducted investigations, they concluded that the mysterious structure approaching giant planet Jupiter and its moon system was clearly an anomaly.
The UFO researchers consulted Solar System Scope, an online 3D simulation of our solar system in real time, and confirmed that the object was a foreign body, or more precisely, a massive artificial structure that entered our solar system only recently.
UFO researchers also suggested that the artificial structure was either a single massive alien UFO mothership or a UFO fleet exploring our section of the galaxy.
Secureteam10 believes that amateur astronomers may have captured on camera proof of alien visitors to our solar system.
And going solely by the evidence of research conducted in recent years by Secureteam10, alien visitors to our solar system have a fascination with planet Jupiter and its satellites, especially Europa.
Recently, UFO researchers reported spotting a massive blue UFO in the vicinity of Jupiter and its moon (see YouTube below).
And not only alien explorers are fascinated with the icy world of Europa. Europa is also of special interest to NASA scientists.
Scientists believe that Europa’s icy world, with a tenuous atmosphere composed mostly of life-supporting oxygen, has an icy subterranean ocean that could support extraterrestrial life.
Based on suspicions that Europa’s icy oceans may contain alien life forms, the European Space Agency (ESA) has plans for a Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer (JUICE) mission scheduled to launch in 2022. It is hoped that humans would encounter the first examples of known extraterrestrial life on Europa.
UFO hunters claim that the apparent fascination of alien visitors to our solar system with Europa could be due to the presence of life on it. Some UFO hunters believe that alien visitors from other star systems may have established a base in Europa’s icy underwater world.

The former lead UFO researcher for the UK Ministry of Defense knows that his government isn't always forthcoming, but isn't reaching for a tin foil hat.
Back in the early ‘90s, when The X-Files first came to television, Nick Pope could use the show to explain his job. He had become — much to his own surprise — the British Ministry of Defense’s lead investigator on UFO reports and sightings, a title he toted around between archives and active cases for four years. After that, he went private, and emerged as one of the world’s leading experts on UFO research — which is why Pope is going to have a busy month. The British government is in the midst of declassifying a ton of different MoD documentsand Pope has stepped in between his government and the conspiracy minded to talk about what this expansive archive really represents and what “unexplained” occurrences really mean.
“I’m a firm believer we shouldn’t read too much into the ‘unexplained,’” he says. Pope is — if he must be classified — a skeptic.
To understand how Pope came by his informed skepticism and how Britain came by an archive of material on UFOs, it’s important to understand the history of “unexplained” aerial phenomena. Back in the 1950s, after modern aviation finally established a foothold in society, UFO sightings began to seep into the media and the minds of the public. The Roswell incident in 1947 certainly didn’t help to quell suspicions and hysteria. But it wasn’t civilians reporting sightings here and there — it began with air force pilots seeing them and tracking them on radar.
“Clearly there was official interest in anything unidentified in our airspace — though the thinking was that we were more likely to be dealing with Russians than Martians,” Pope tells Inverse.
The U.S. moved forward to investigate the strange lights in the sky (resulting in the start of Project Blue Book in 1952). Not wanting to fall behind, the British began their own UFO investigations as well. Fast forward to the 1991: After six years in other positions at the MoD, Pope was assigned to work on UFO investigations.
“I had no prior interest in the subject and my only exposure to the topic had been watching the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind when I was a kid,” he says.
Once he started following up on reports, Pope found there was actually something to them. Most sightings, of course, had pretty conventional explanations — usually ordinary objects or natural events that were simply misidentified. “But every now and then,” he says, “an interesting case came along that gave us pause for thought.” Pope took advantage of his new position by digging into the archive of past reports. He found that there had been some decidedly odd occurrences over the years. “No proof of anything extraterrestrial, but, it wasn’t all swamp gas either,” he says.
Among the strangest and most interesting cases Pope had the pleasure of working was a series of UFO sightings by over a hundred different witnesses — many of them law enforcement and military personnel. Dubbed the Cosford Incident — patrols at the Royal Air Force base at Cosford reported seeing a UFO comprised of two white lights and a faint red glow — the event triggered an investigation and Pope found that there was “no defense significance” to the UFOs sighted and also no reasonable explanation for what people had seen. In his briefing to the head of his division, Pope wrote:
“It seems that an unidentified object of unknown origin was operating in the UK Air Defence Region without being detected on radar; this would appear to be of considerable defence significance, and I recommend that we investigate further, within MoD or with the U.S. authorities.”
In a rare showing of support, Pope’s superior agreed with his conclusion, writing to his superior:
“In summary, there would seem to be some evidence on this occasion that an unidentified object (or objects) of unknown origin was operating over the UK.”
“This is about as close the MoD will ever get to saying that there’s more to UFOs than misidentifications or hoaxes,” Pope says.
Pope was also pretty involved in follow-up investigations concerning theRendlesham Forest incident — Britain’s most famous UFO story. In December 1980, a series of sightings and a landing by some type of aircraft took place near the twin military bases of Bentwaters and Woodbridge. The MoD’s investigations were, in the words of Pope, “inconclusive.” Lord Hill-Norton, a retired 5-star admiral who was a former Chief of the Defense staff and a former chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, said in his assessment that he believed either an unidentified craft landed, or a large number of military witnesses were lying or hallucinating — and either explanation warranted further investigation. To date, the case remains unexplained.
The biggest things Pope says he learned from his time as a UFO investigator: most witnesses are sincere and sane — also, wrong. Pope believe that the key reason “a hell of a lot of people” believe their government is involved with some sort of conspiracy is that the government doesn’t always do a good job being forthright about their actual interest in UFOs, largely for defense reasons.
That’s less true today than it was during the Cold War. The MoD shut down its UFO investigations in 2009 and the mass declassification of 209 files and 52,000 pages of documentation has served as a public confession. Now, there’s a little less than two-dozen files remaining those are expected to be released soon — much to the consternation of UFO truthers, who Pope notes that these groups also believe the intentional release of these files is a ploy to disseminate false information. “We were never going to satisfy these people anyway, so it’s a moot point,” he says.
Together, the documents are a mix of policy information that outlines how the MoD wanted to go about investigating UFO sightings (and some alien abduction claims by individuals), the reports of the sightings themselves, public correspondence files, and details on how the subject was raised and treated in Parliament.
These days, most of the world’s governments have moved out of the UFO business. Pope isn’t sure this is a good idea because governments have access to resources and capabilities private individuals don’t. Radar data is the ultimate example: When Pope needed to find out whether nearby radar installations may have picked up and identified a nearby UFO sighting, all he had to do was pick up the phone and call whomever he needed. Now, pretty much the only civilian move is to make a records request, which Pope says will likely be handled “begrudgingly” by the government.
But perhaps most of all, technology has made it a thousand times easier to actually conduct investigations and reach out to witnesses. People can stay connected even after several years and discuss what they saw.
“Let me put it this way,” says Pope. “If Roswell [occurred] today, what would happen? The answer is, we would have an answer, one way or another.”
Although the paranoia that fueled UFO speculation during the Cold War has waned, interest in aliens and UFOs remains consistently strong. He thinks a healthy skepticism is still the best approach towards dealing with such reports, but he acknowledges that aliens would “of course be more fascinating.” If we do find hard evidence of a UFO with extraterrestrial origins, Pope will be there to participate in the explanation of the unexplainable. He’s not a government agent anymore, but he’s still get his eyes open.

Australia First to Receive Electricity Using Zero-emission Wave Energy Generators
Australia First to Receive Electricity Using Zero-emission Wave Energy Generators
Australia is taking advantage of their naturally abundant energy resource. Using hydroelecticity and a power reverse-osmosis desalination plant, they are riding the wave of eco-friendly energy provided from the ocean.
Our oceans contain a powerful amount of clean, renewable energy. Australia is harnessing that energy on a mass scale along their coastal shores… and setting the stage for wave technology to go global.

The Perth Wave Energy Project has created the first commercial ocean wave installation. The facility translates and stores energy from the movement of the ocean. Enough energy, in fact, to run a navel base near Garden Island in Western Australia!
Using the CETO 5 wave energy generators, developed by Carnegie Wave Energy Limited, the site has channeled zero-emissions energy from three CETO 5 units into a functioning power grid for 14,000 cumulative hours.
How Wave Technology Works
“Below is a short video that explains the process of how the fully-submerged CETO 5 system, made up of a 240kW bouy tethered to a water pump, converts the movements of the ocean into a stream of high-powered water, which is then is used to create hydroelecticity and power a reverse-osmosis desalination plant.
“Carnegie Wave Energy claims the generator system has minimal impact on marine life, does not produce pollution, can be deployed in a variety of depths and sea floor conditions, and is unaffected by storms. With the commercial viability of the CETO system now established, the idea of a technology that produces both clean energy and clean water has many energy experts excited.”
Wave-powered generation could hold the key to the viability of renewable energy because it was predictable and could run all day, every day. This is one of the great success stories in innovation in renewable energy. ~ Ian Macfarlane, Federal Energy Minister in Australia [1]
The Perth Wave Energy Project is the world’s first grid-connected commercial scale demonstration of Carnegie’s CETO technology. This is an important step towards unlocking the vast potential of wave energy in Australia and internationally. ~ Australian Renewable Energy Agency [2]
The Future Of Wave Technology
“Carnegie has secured an additional $20 million in financing to pursue improvements in the next-generation CETO 6. The company and its supporters now face the challenge of increasing the scale of wave energy projects while decreasing the cost of installations.”
CETO’s modular design allows for customizable scalability, and its being entirely submerged renders the equipment less susceptible to damage from storms and air erosion.
The great thing about it is we know it works. The challenge from here on is really about scale and cost.~ Michael Ottaviano, Carnegie Wave Energy CEO [3]
Q&A: Planetary Scientist Simulates Asteroid Impacts
Q&A: Planetary Scientist Simulates Asteroid Impacts
by Jeremy Hsu
An artist's illustration of a large asteroid headed for Earth.
Pierazzo's latest computer simulations showed how an ocean impact could destroy much of the ozone layer that protects life on Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays. Looking at such atmospheric effects of impacts is tough, but has provided a better understanding of past hits such as the one that wiped out the dinosaurs and left the Chicxulub crater.Asteroids may leave impact craters and occasionally wipe out entire species, but planetary scientist Elisabetta "Betty" Pierazzo also wants to know what happens to Earth's seas and skies. Her work at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz., has revealed not only how deep impacts altered Earth's past, but also how they might shape humanity's future.
Q: Do you think the case is now closed about the Chicxulub impact triggering the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K/T) extinction and the end of the dinosaurs?
A: One of the beauties of science is that no scientific conclusion is ever final. Any scientific theory is always valid as long as accumulated evidence – and I should say, not interpretation of data, but good solid data; unfortunately, it is easy to take bad data or interpretations of data, and use them in favor or against a theory; that is not good science – supports it.
I believe that the majority of scientists are pretty much convinced that the connection between the K/T mass extinction and the Chicxulub impact is very strong and compelling. A review of the evidence can be found in a recently published Science paper (Schulte et al., Science 327, p. 1214-1218). However, some scientists still believe that the evidence is not convincing enough and keep fighting this theory.
One of their objections is that besides the Chicxulub impact there is no other case in Earth's history in which a mass extinction has been linked to an impact event, and vice versa. This is a strange assertion, as nobody disputes the point that not all impacts can cause mass extinctions.
The Chicxulub impact was a case of the worst possible scenario: a large impact occurring in the wrong place and very possibly at the wrong time. The wrong place is the location of the impact, on a continental platform with a thick sedimentary layer that caused the release of large quantities of climatically active gases, on top of other catastrophic effects of a large impact. The wrong time is related to the fact that towards the end of the Cretaceous there was a slow but constant decline of the climate. That may have changed optimal living conditions for various species locally.
Q: How often have asteroids or comets triggered such mass extinction events on Earth?
A: The only event that shows a clear link between a mass extinction and an impact event is the K/T boundary. Keep in mind that the Chicxulub crater is the largest crater so far discovered on the Earth's surface in the Phanerozoic (the last 540 million years), when complex life evolved. At the same time, no other mass extinction has the same characteristics of the K/T extinction, especially with respect to the abruptness with which it occurred.
It is dangerous to try to find a unique cause for all known mass extinctions. They were all unique in some ways, and it is possible that every single one was triggered by different causes. Just because the K/T mass extinction is linked to the Chicxulub impact does not mean that all large mass extinctions are linked to an impact event, and vice versa, it takes very large impacts and particular impact conditions to trigger a large mass extinction.
Q: What are the big unknowns that remain about how past impacts affected Earth?
A: There is still so much we don't know very well about the effects of medium to large asteroid impacts. We do have an idea of the possible effects associated with impact events, but our understanding is mostly qualitative.
We know that large impacts can cause strong earthquakes or widespread tsunamis (if the impact is in the ocean). They can also eject large amounts of material around the globe, possibly enhanced by decomposition of sediments (if present) that may inject large amounts of climatically active gases in the upper atmosphere.
Material ejected from the impact way above the bulk of the Earth's atmosphere would re-enter the atmosphere from above, and due to friction with the atmosphere, generate a short-lasting global pulse of increased thermal radiation at the surface. Estimates of the level of radiation suggest strong thermal damage to the biosphere, even if high radiation levels lasted for only a few tens of minutes.
There has been a remarkable improvement in climate models that now allow us to combine models of the atmosphere, ocean, land, ice and biology into sophisticated single Earth-system models. There is hope that in the future we may make progress in applying these new models to the huge disturbances in the normal environment associated with large impact events. A big limiting factor has been the magnitude of the disturbanceassociated with large impacts, which has been too large for these complex models to handle.
Q: How do you think the public and policymakers should think about the ongoing or future risks of asteroid impacts?
A: We all live with various natural risks: the risk of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, tsunamis, tornadoes, etc. Humans have an amazing capability of adapting and accepting risks while continuing with their lives. It is good practice to have plans for dealing with natural disasters, and this is something that should be thought of also in the case of the impact risk.
Overall, the probability of being hit by a medium asteroid is smaller than the probability of various natural disasters. However, the potential for loss of human lives and extent of the damage in the long term is much greater for a medium-size impact than for any natural hazard. This point has been expressed very well by David Morrison (from the NASA Ames Research Center): "The impact hazard represents the extreme case of a calamity of low probability but high consequences – consequences that include the possible end of civilization as we know it." I would say this is threatening enough that we should at least try to think about possible survival or recovery plans.
Q: Given NASA's limited budget, how would you prioritize detecting near Earth objects (NEOs) and figuring out ways to deflect them?
A: I believe that first of all we should try to quantify better what are the actual effects of different size asteroid impacts, especially in the medium range. Our understanding of what size asteroid may generate global effects is still limited; currently, the threshold for a civilization-destroying impact event is generally put somewhere between a 1 and 3 kilometer (0.62 and 1.86 mile) diameter object. In the case of smaller impactors, the intensity and extension of the environmental effects are not well established.
Scientists have leveraged data from explosion tests to get an idea of the intensity of some effects, but such data can assess only a limited number of effects. They also used data from natural events, such as volcanic explosions or wildfires, to try to understand the effect of large amounts of dust and various climatically active gases on the climate. However, the size of the disturbancesassociated with natural events and explosion tests is much smaller than that associated with medium to large impacts, and that makes for a very qualitative understanding of the effects associated with impacts.
The detection of NEOs is crucial to assess the risk of impacts in the near future. It also helps characterize the population of NEOs and validate theoretical models of the expected population, and that allows us to make estimates of potential NEOs which have not been discovered yet.
The Spaceguard program has been in place for over a decade now, and its success is clear. General estimates of NEO populations suggest that about 95 percent of asteroids are larger than 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter (the civilization destroyers). But more work is still necessary to detect slightly smaller objects. That may require access to more powerful telescopes that can detect smaller objects.
However, it is important to continue the assessment of possible ways to deflect asteroids in case we find one on a collision path with Earth. I believe this becomes quickly a political discussion, as the threat is global and not just for one country. Assessment and action on developing techniques for deflection may require international cooperation.
Q: Despite the destruction related to asteroid or comet impacts, are there any long-term benefits of such impacts for life on Earth?
A: When the Earth was young and life was starting to emerge, very large impacts could have had serious effects on its survival and evolution. At the same time, large impacts may have delivered elements and molecules that are important for the development of life. Today, the Earth's neighborhood is populated by smaller objects that could not destroy life on Earth. At the same time, life has allowed the development and buildup of all the important organic molecules, so life on Earth does not depend anymore on delivery of crucial building blocks for life to the Earth's surface.
Aliens are controlling the amount of light and heat the Earth gets from the sun, UFO enthusiasts have claimed.
This footage taken from the Solar Heliospheric Observatory spacecraft is apparently proof that extra terrestrials are harvesting the sun's rays for an unknown purpose.
Posted on YouTube by UFO hunter myunhauzen74 , the video is a compilation of stills zooming in on several white dots circling around the star.
The video was picked up by Scott C Waring, who runs the popular UFO Sightings Daily website.
He said the clip reminded him of a news story he read years before about two Russian scientists who had discovered UFOs "bigger than our moon" carrying out a daily, 24-hour operation around the sun, for reasons unknown.
Unfortunately, Waring said, all trace of that particular news story had "long since vanished form the web".
Nevertheless, the new video and the story he read several years previously is enough for Waring to conclude: "They are out there...around our sun, doing god knows what?
"They may actually be controlling the sun, to keep a steady temperature here on earth, or they could be harvesting a very rare and powerful heavy element.
"Let's hope they don't make a mistake and barbecue our planet."
The theory that aliens are conducting clandestine operations around the Earth's life source is popular amongst UFO hunters.
In January, alien-spotter Tyler Glockner, who runs YouTube channel Secure Team 10, claimed footage taken from NASA's helioviewer showed a UFO 100 times the size of earth "sucking off plasma from the sun".

EX-MOD COP WHO 'SAW UFO AT GREENHAM COMMON' BLOWS THE WHISTLE AFTER 30-YEARS SILENCE
EX-MOD COP WHO 'SAW UFO AT GREENHAM COMMON' BLOWS THE WHISTLE AFTER 30-YEARS SILENCE
The whistleblower says he has kept quite for 27 years until the "identical" sighting
The whistleblower, who has not been named amid fears he could be accused of breaching the Official Secrets Act, came forward after a recent sighting of what he described as an identical UFO.
The man, now aged in his 70s, came forward after Vanessa Cloete revealed a picture she took of an alleged UFO hovering over the Charnham Park area of Hungerford in Berkshire.
The ex-officer claimed he and a colleague witnessed the same type of object fly down towards them above Greenham Common nuclear missile silos one night in the late 1980s.
Greenham Common, famous for its anti-nuclear protests, was used by the RAF and US Army Air Force, but it closed in 1993 after the Cold War.
The man claims he was made to sign the Official Secrets Act and told never to discuss the event and a US "Men in Black" suited officer swore them to secrecy.
He said: “It looked exactly the same as the photograph in the paper.
“I want the people in Hungerford and Lambourn who saw it to know they’re not alone and that someone believes them.”
Ms Cloete snapped several pictures of the UFO above her home last June.
I was on patrol near the missile silos with a colleague when we tried to fill up with fuel from the pumps. They suddenly failed for no apparent reason and then we saw it – just like the photograph, a big, glowing ballbearing with a halo round it.
But the retired officer is the only ex-offoicial to step forward.
He added: “I was on patrol near the missile silos with a colleague when we tried to fill up with fuel from the pumps.
“They suddenly failed for no apparent reason and then we saw it – just like the photograph, a big, glowing ballbearing with a halo round it.
“It swooped down and my colleague said: ‘What the hell is that?’
“I know what aircraft and balloons look like. It was neither.
“It was just floating above the runway.”
He claimed it sped off at an “impossible speed” and they later informed the control room.
He said next day he was grilled by top brass in the presence of a black-suited American and warned never to mention it.
He added: “It’s been on my mind ever since and the photograph brought it all back.”
regardless of what he saw, the image snapped last year was investigated by the world's biggest UFO research organisation.

Brains, Minds, AI, God: Marvin Minsky Thought Like No One Else (Tribute)
Brains, Minds, AI, God: Marvin Minsky Thought Like No One Else (Tribute)
By Robert Lawrence Kuhn
Robert Lawrence Kuhn is the creator, writer and host of "Closer to Truth," a public television series and online resource that features the world's leading thinkers exploring humanity's deepest questions (Peter Getzels, producer/director). Kuhn contributed this article to Live Science's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.
Artificial intelligence (AI) pervades people's lives today, from smartphones and search engines to transportation systems and medical diagnoses. One of AI's legendary pioneers, Marvin Minsky, co-founder of what is now the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and considered to be the "father of AI," died on Jan. 24, 2016, at age 88.
Polymathic in capacity, protean in vision, Minksy spent his life figuring out how to make machines that are intelligent, "whatever that means," as he liked to say. He developed AI's two principle schools of thought: the "symbolic school" of abstract manipulations and the "connectionist school" of unstructured self-organization. He built the first learning machine based on neural networks, simulating how the brain works through practice and trial and error, a progenitor of today's "deep learning."
Smart people said Marvin was the "smartest person I ever met." Those closest to Marvin said he was "childlike." This, they meant as a supreme compliment, because he was ever eager to explore new ideas and never too proud to jump into the middle of things. Minsky won the A.M. Turing Award, the most prestigious award in computer science. Moreover, he mentored a generation of leaders in AI and related fields, including inventor and futurist Ray Kurzweil, who called Minsky "my only mentor."
Meeting Minsky
Minsky was voluminous in his production of ideas, covering great swaths of intellectual terrain. Part of his charm was his iconoclastic stream of consciousness, generating a gusher of provocative and sometimes outrageous ideas that, agree with them or not, always made you think.
I met Marvin in 1999 during the inaugural season of "Closer to Truth." He personified what we aspired to be on the show: inventive, insightful, irreverent, fearless, rigorous, tough-minded, iconoclastic, daring, whimsical. I wanted to do what Marvin did: challenge conventional belief, taking our topics seriously, but not ourselves.
Timorously, I invited Marvin to participate in our first taping session at KOCE, a small PBS station in Orange County, California. In retrospect, I realize I was asking an international superstar, whom I had never met and who certainly did not know me, to fly across the country to appear with an unknown host on a not-yet-broadcast television show — and be a co-equal on an opaque panel with four others whose identities I couldn't even suggest, much less confirm. I prepared myself for rejection, more likely for no response at all.
Marvin accepted immediately. Of course he'd do it — that was Martin — and do it he did. He provided incisive insights. Combative arguments. Effervescent style. No airs or pretensions.
I asked him about his book, "The Society of Mind" (Simon & Schuster, 1988), which combined ideas from artificial intelligence and developmental psychology to develop his thesis that human minds are composed of hundreds of mini-mind modules (Marvin estimated about 400 of them), each of which evolved to execute highly specific tasks. And when integrated together, they generate a constructed sense of conscious unity. (All Minsky quotes in this essay are from his multiple appearances on "Closer to Truth.") [Scientists Closing in on Theory of Consciousness]
"It's trying to figure out how the mind works," Minsky told me, "without the commonsense belief that somewhere inside the mind there's a 'self' that's sort of in control and commanding everything. So the question is, how do you get mindlike behavior from a brain really made of roughly 400 different computers? They do different things. They don't agree on everything. How do you get reasonable, commonsense behavior out of such a system?"
Minsky's concept of a "society" is that all these separate "mind computers" are working together in the brain. But "it's not like human society," he clarifies, "where each person works pretty well independently."
When producer/director Peter Getzels and I restructured "Closer to Truth," Minsky was again among our first, most-desired interviews — this time, one-on-one at MIT (2007). Marvin was penetrating and fiery; even on the edges of knowledge, he never hesitated, offering his scintillating, idiosyncratic and often radical takes on the nature of the cosmos, the inner workings of minds and consciousness, and how human beings might achieve immortality. It was a treat; we were swept up by his passion, engulfed by his intellect.
An AI pioneer explores consciousness
In that interview, I focused on the mystery of consciousness, but to Marvin there was no mystery. "A whole society of scientists is trying to find the place in the brain where consciousness is," Minsky explained to me. "But if it's just a word for many different processes, they're wasting their time. … For everyday purposes, the idea of 'self' is important. But from a cognitive point of view, it's a very stupid idea and it's an obstacle to understanding how our minds work."
The common belief in a nonphysical (perhaps immortal) soul was a related topic that I figured, a bit mischievously, could "stimulate" Marvin's way of thinking — and I braced for fireworks. I had no doubt that Marvin would reject the idea of a soul, of course, but I was curious to find out just how he would dismiss it.
"The idea that there's a central 'I' who has the experience is taking a commonsense concept and not realizing that it has no good technical counterpart," Minsky said. "Rather, it [our 'I'] has 20 or 30 different meanings, and you keep switching from one to the other without knowing it. So it all seems like one thing [when it's not]. … I studied mathematics for many years and finally proved some theorems no one else had. It was wonderful, and it was hard work. Now, if somebody comes along and says some 'creator' gave you this ability [via a 'soul'], well, that's very demeaning. [History of A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (Infographic)]
"I don't want to be dissed by saying my virtues come from a 'soul'. The idea of a soul seems to me very demeaning. It's saying nothing we do has any consequence. There's someone else just dropping these little gifts on us. A soul is a terrible idea. … The people who talk about a soul are just people who are too ignorant or unambitious or lazy — I don't know what insults to hurl at them."
To Minsky, if you couldn't explain how something works, you haven't explained anything at all. Worse, to him, the assumption that some kind of ethereal soul explains the human mind undermines the hard work required to really explain it.
I asked Marvin about the claim made by many philosophers that the mind cannot be "reduced" to the brain, meaning that it is impossible to account fully for mental function in terms of fundamental physics.
"I don't think we need a separate mental world," Minsky countered, to no one's surprise. "Many philosophers say if some process takes more than three steps, it must be 'irreducible.' Nothing is irreducible. It's just that we're not [yet] smart enough [to know how] to reduce it. … Think of the hubris, the preposterousness of a person who says, 'I know this question can't be answered.' … To say no one can answer it is to say, 'I am so smart that I can predict that nobody else will ever develop a better theory.'"
I'm not that smart, but still I don't agree. I myself am not a reductionist. I do not expect that, even in the fullness of time, mind can ever be reduced completely to brain. Yet I would rather listen to Marvin argue against my view than to almost anyone else arguing for my view. From Marvin, I learn more.
Is feeling also thinking?
In that same interview, I also asked Minsky to describe the relationship between thinking and feeling, the topic of his next book, "The Emotion Machine" (Simon & Schuster, 2006).
"The ordinary words of popular psychology — like emotion and cognition, feeling and thinking, and so forth — are hundreds of years old," Minsky said, "and each of them is a clever way society has developed to not think about what's going on. … This distinction between thinking and emotion has wasted a century of psychologists' time, because they don't understand that each emotion is a particular way to think."
I then transitioned our conversation from one megacategory to another, from brain/mind to physics/universe, by asking about quantum mechanics and its strangeness. Minsky's concise explanation was as discerning as it was counterintuitive.
"Philosophers like to talk about the [Heisenberg] 'uncertainty principle' where quantum mechanics makes things unpredictable," he said. "It's exactly the opposite. … All these philosophers have missed the point that a deterministic universe is not good. It's chaotic. And the quantum universe is stable."
Here's the deep idea that Minsky so breezily explained. In classical physics, which is deterministic, the naive "solar system" model of negatively charged electrons flying around a positively charged nucleus cannot be stable — if elections "orbited" in that way, they would emit electromagnetic radiation, lose energy, and the negative-positive attraction would cause the election to crash into the nucleus, destroying the atom. In quantum mechanics, which is probabilistic, the electron has wavelike features, cannot have both a definite position and a definite velocity (momentum), and therefore cannot be confined in an arbitrarily small space (without adding increasingly huge amounts of energy). This means that the atom cannot collapse, and the quantum universe, as Minsky said simply, is stable. [Why Can't Quantum Mechanics Explain Gravity? (Op-Ed)]
Delving into speculation, I asked whether this universe could be a fake.
"We might be a program running on a computer," he responded seriously. "What we know about computational processes is that it's easy to make a simple process that produces infinite complexity [ultimately] — it doesn't take a 'God,' because we can make a little computer program that can successively write all possible computer programs just by enumerating them and making small changes."
Could human beings ever know whether this universe is really a simulation?
"It could be that in some simulated worlds there are enough defects or slight irregularities that you could figure out what computer is simulating you," Marvin mused. "Ultimately, you might find something for which the best explanation was that we're not real, we're just a program on an 'IBM 68 billion' or an [Intel] 86 billion or whatever." [Is Our Universe a Fake?]
The trouble with religion
I was now ready to explore a Minsky favorite foil: religion.
"The trouble with religion is that it picks particular things, like 'why are we here?' or 'what created the world?' or 'what should we do in various conditions?'" he began. "But these can be studied and understood by thinking more. … If a lot of people believe something and it's complicated [like religion], then it's unlikely that they thought of it themselves. So it's probably an infectious mental disease, a little network of ideas like a virus that knows how to jump from brain to brain and spread."
Far-reaching for some, but not for Marvin. As many of his admirers know, he had strong opinions.
On a changing society
Reflecting on news of his death brought me back to 1999. It was not long after we had come to realize that the "WorldWideWeb" (as it was called) would be changing humanity, but how, we weren't quite sure.
"We're under pressure to decide faster," he said in an episode entitled "How does Technology Transform Thinking?" He explained that because facts are more quickly at people's disposal, and everyone expects fast answers, people are forced to be less reflective. "One of the most dangerous things," he stressed, "is rapid communication in political affairs, where a TV network can ask, 'What does the public think?' and in minutes they say 70 percent of the people think this or that."
Reflecting on the Internet as an "amplifier of evil," Minsky said, "There's a serious problem, because people don't understand the difference between popular democracy and representative democracy. The idea of taking a poll 5 minutes after something happens and publicizing it is very dangerous."
How prescient! More than 15 years ago, while many pundits were predicting that the democratization of information would improve the quality of political discourse, Minsky foresaw the reverse. Instant, mass communication, he warned, could yield instant, mass manipulation.
Marvin also worried about today's role models. "With the power of media, who are the mentors being built into the minds of our citizens," he asked me rhetorically? "It's 98 percent sports idiots, actresses, actors."
While many critics decry actors as role models, Minsky's insight focuses on the nature of the profession.
"Why are actors 'heroes'?" Minsky continued. "Because they're good liars. That's what it takes to be an actor, getting you to trust him when he's playing a role. We have this strange celebrity thing, and instead of children getting values from the right people, they get it from people who have the gift of pretending. Celebrities are celebrities because they somehow make people trust them."
Instead, Marvin promoted critical thinking. "To understand things well," Marvin said, "is to think critically. Somebody tells you something, you say, 'What's the evidence for that?' In most religions, there are certain questions we can't decide that way, so it's important, [religions say], to have faith. And if you're very good at having faith, then it means you're not very good at critical thinking."
And, "To stress believing a set of rules that comes from an authority figure," Marvin said, can lead to "terrible dangers."
Minsky railed against overarching organizations, institutions and cultures that imposed their belief systems or parochial values without, in his opinion, evidence or logic. He encouraged individuals to take personal responsibility and stand their mental ground in resisting the imposition of absolute ideas.
Marvin asserted that "faith and critical thinking" are mutually exclusive. But a co-panelist on an original "Closer to Truth" round table (in 1999) challenged him, asking, "Can critical thinking help you with death and bad things?" The questioner was implying that restricting "truths" to only those concepts that are accessible via critical thinking may limit access to deeper truths, such as those that may be provided by religion or morality.
"Well, I disagree," Marvin declared unapologetically. "Death has a rational explanation. If it weren't for 2,000 years of religion — when science [hadn't yet developed] — we might have already conquered death. Belief in the afterlife is why we don't live forever. The fundamental paradox is that we have been deprived of our immortality by religion."
As the discussion shifted to personal responsibility, Minsky said, "We're going to need a new theory, because current theories are clearly unsound. We see people committing a crime and people argue, 'Is the cause social?' Or religious people say, 'The devil got into him.' But when we understand the brain, we'll have real decisions to make, like what level of violence do we want in our children?"
Minsky, prescient again, was musing about how neuroscience alters the commonplace understanding of "free will" and the impact of that on moral responsibility, with huge implications for the judicial system and civil society. What happens, people now ask with concern, when advancing neuroscience, through genetic engineering and brain interventions, gains the capacity to change human behaviors? It is a real-world prospect, fraught with the tensions, risks and dangers of competing values.
I pressed Minsky about if he was advocating "social engineering," manipulating citizens through science to create, and enforce, a majority-determined society.
Society "already does it [manipulates people] by pumping beliefs into us," Minsky shot back at me. "We have to figure out some way to get enough variety so that even if there's a culture with a billion people who all think the same way, and if it turns out to be a bad way, there are other ways of thinking. We don't know how to solve this problem."
Reminding himself of humanity's perilous position on this one fragile planet, Minsky advised that we should do whatever it takes "to get three or four colonies off the Earth, on asteroids, some other places — as life insurance."
"I don't like cultures," was a Minsky theme, and I heard it several times. "Cultures are a waste of the human mind," he said. "A person becomes a kind of robot because he's this nationality or that race or he's a whatever-it-is. Everybody says we should respect these cultures, but why should we?"
Lamenting that most people find learning painful, Minsky posited that most cultures exist "because they've taught their people to reject new ideas. It's not 'human nature.' It's 'culture nature.' I regard cultures as huge parasites. I think each person has a lot of potential, and I find it painful when I'm introduced to people who didn't choose their belief system. Their culture chose it. And to me, that culture is an evil, mindless force that first teaches its values and then instills fear of other values. So, of course, it looks like human nature, but it's 'meme nature' — ideas that get into the brain, and the ones that stick best are the ones that kill other ideas best.
"I have many cultures," Minsky continued. "Every week, I find a new culture. The other day, because a little girl asked me, I found on the Net a group of people who collect the whiskers of cats. They're all over the world — only about 50 people. And they spend a lot of time at it, sending little emails to each other about how they find the whiskers. So, on a long-haired cat, whiskers can float around … oh, well, forget it … the point is that I'm in many cultures."
That's Marvin personified! Ever curious, unpretentious to his core, Marvin had a preternatural capacity for extracting insights from the most mundane situations.
On the same "Closer to Truth" panel, political scientist Francis Fukuyama (then at George Mason University in Virginia, now at Stanford University in California) suggested that Marvin was "not really part of that [cat whisker] culture. You're just a visitor," he said.
"What do you mean, 'part,'" Minsky responded? "You mean it doesn't eat up my whole brain? Thank God, if you'll pardon the expression, no! I don't want 90 percent of my mind eaten up by a bunch of rules that were written thousands of years ago and don't reflect anything good."
When we discussed "tolerance," Marvin became, well, militant. "What's so great about 'tolerance,' he asked? "Do you mean we should teach our kids that all ideas are equally good? I don't think that we should tolerate ideas in the sense that, 'It's OK to let that poor person have his brain eaten by that set of ideas.' It offends me. I'm not tolerant. … In a culture, people relate to each other to the extent that they think the same thoughts and don't think for themselves. I don't regard that as a virtue. Maybe lazy humans like it, but I would teach them not to be lazy."
Asked about "enhancing happiness" in the future, Marvin was his acerbic, contrarian self. "I want people to be very unhappy that they don't understand things, like cosmic string theory. I hate happiness because that means that you're not interested in anything more."
To Marvin, commonplace "happiness" was mindless contentment, and he eschewed it. He envisioned the ideal human experience as striving to understand and struggling to learn, a restless pursuit of knowledge in order to advance humanity's collective wisdom. Self-satisfaction, unambitious comfort, sluggish tranquility — these were the enemy.
The Internet as divider?
Marvin offered profound and predictive observations about the then freshly burgeoning Internet, including how circles of friends would be more likely to cluster and less likely to expand, and how rigidity could overpower tolerance because those of like minds would seek self-reinforcement.
"Keeping contact with people on the Net is going to be a very strange thing," Minsky forecasted in 1999. "We have a mobile society, and we learn to make new friends. What will happen in the future? When you're 7 years old, you make a dozen friends, and they move away, but with the Net you still have them. We may get people who don't bother to form new friendships, because you can spend your whole life with people that you already know. That might change society.
"I don't like civility," Marvin offered without apology. "The trouble with insulting somebody in their presence is that they'll hit you. And you can't express yourself very well. I have made many friends on Internet newsgroups whom I've never met, and in many cases I don't hope to meet. These 'flame wars' are wonderful: People tell you what they really think, or else they lie — it doesn't matter. But you learn more per hour this way, by getting right to the heart of the matter. The polite people are a waste of time. They write all these words, and I usually turn to another screen."
Minsky was no troll. Trolls go for the "lulz" (the "joy" or "achievement" of causing emotional distress); Minsky went for the truth.
"Face-to-face contact is almost impossible to penetrate," Minsky said. "When you meet people, they have certain postures and you're dominated by stereotypes. When you talk to people on the Net, you're dominated by whatever ideas they have."
I asked Minsky for his grand prediction of the future of the Internet. He said,
"One-hundred years from now, people will say, 'Well, the Internet was really important until the development of [true] artificial intelligence in 2073.' The second bump was the big one."
I wondered whether he had ever been intimidated. "Well, I don't care very much what other people think about me," Marvin said, staying in character. "So it's hard to intimidate me, unless it's [physicist] Richard Feynman."
When I suggested that Feynman couldn't intimidate anyone because he was, well, dead, Marvin said he didn't care. "It doesn't matter that he's dead," Marvin said with a straight face. "I have a very good [mental] copy of him, and if I say something too speculative, I can hear Feynman say, 'What would be the experiment for that?'"
The Minsky way of thinking
How to distinguish Minsky's way of thinking? I'd start with two organizing principles. First, "How does it work?" He applied this, for starters, to brains, minds, computers, natural intelligence, artificial intelligence, information, society, religion and God. Second, "Don't be sure!" As Minsky asserted, "The word 'sure' is when a cognitive process has turned off all other processes that can cast doubt on a particular statement. 'Being sure' is not 'being sure.' Being sure is a process saying, 'I'm not going to change my mind.'"
It's no secret that Marvin was a strong atheist, and irrespective of one's beliefs, one can appreciate — dare I say "enjoy" — his bluntness. "If you want real meaning, and you can't find one, it's all very well to make one up," he told me. "But I don't see how that [God] solves any problems. Unless you say how God works, saying that God exists doesn't explain anything."
If there is a God, I'd be disappointed if Marvin isn't one of God's favorites. (Actually, I'd be shocked.)
In the 17 years of "Closer to Truth," whether in discourse with atheists or with theists, I've tried to elicit best thinking and tease out clear arguments, which we question and challenge equally. We think critically with an ever-open mind. We reject only sloppy, specious arguments — and often, I ask myself, "What would Marvin think?"

Amazing Disc-shaped UFO spotted over Highway Zürich-Bern, Switzerland
The next images show a disc-shaped UFO hovering in the sky above the Highway Zürich-Bern in Switzerland on Saturday night, March 5, 2016.
Witness states: My son went with his grandmother from Burgdorf to Bern. He saw a floating object on the highway. Because he always has his Iphone in his hands, he made the picture of the UFO. UFO left side up. Mufon case 74979.
If the photograph is genuine and not altered or manipulated then it is without doubt one of the best UFO evidence captured on camera.
