Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal has a scoop on an unusual new government facility in the middle of the Nevada desert. Eighty miles northwest of Las Vegas, and just south of a landscape pockmarked by nuclear weapons explosions, is Area 6, a mysterious airfield with plenty of hangars but no visible airplanes.
Located on land controlled by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Area 6 is also not far from the infamous Area 51. A NNSA spokesman told the Review-Journal—apparently after months of "fending off questions" regarding the site—that Area 6 is a place government agencies use to test the sensors onboard unmanned aerial vehicles. In other words, it's a drone proving ground.
According to a document filed by the giant multinational engineering corporation Bechtel, Area 6 is used to "construct, operate, and test a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles. Tests include, but are not limited to, airframe modifications, sensor operation, and onboard computer development. A small, manned chase plane is used to track the unmanned aerial vehicles."
The site is allegedly used to test sensors designed to detect nuclear radiation from both nuclear weapons and dirty bombs, as well as chemical weapons. An analyst from Globalsecurity.org told the paper that the Area 6 potentially could be used to test surveillance equipment, especially systems bound for desert environments such as Libya.

The asphalt runway stretches for a mile on Yucca Flat, deep in the Nevada National Security Site about 80 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Built in 2005, the runway covers a dirt landing strip from the 1950s, when the wide, flat valley was used for atomic bomb test shots. A small complex of buildings dominated by a large hangar with unusual clamshell doors dominates the southern end of the asphalt strip.
The complex has no official name. Not many people even know it’s there.
As secret airbases go, the single runway in the test site’s Area 6 is easily overshadowed by the world’s most famous secret military base, Area 51, a dozen miles northeast. Area 51’s existence was only recently acknowledged, even after decades of speculation by UFO enthusiasts that the aircraft development and test facility also houses space aliens and extraterrestrial technology.
Unlike Area 51, which is protected by shoot-to-kill security and shielded from outside view by mountain ranges, Area 6 has only fences and visitor checkpoints. It can be seen at a distance from tour buses on the highway to historic bomb craters at the northern end of Yucca Flat.
But exactly what goes on at the much smaller and much newer Area 6 is still top-secret defense research-and-development work. It’s so hush-hush that the security site’s spokesman can say little about it.
Darwin Morgan, a spokesman for the National Nuclear Security Administration, said the low-key Area 6 facilities have been used by the Defense and Homeland Security departments.
“They come here to test their own sensors,” he recently said after spending months fending off questions about the Area 6 runway from the Review-Journal.
Area 6: Is the Nevada desert hiding another secret testing facility?
Other than a few “Above Top Secret” forum posts from 2009, and a Wikipedia blurb that cites a 2011 Flightglobal story saying the runway is part of an unmanned aerial vehicle test facility, little has been written about the Area 6 runway.
Flightglobal, an aviation industry website, noted a five-sentence description of the Area 6 “aerial operations facility” found in a 7,500-page safety report on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste project.
“The purpose of this facility is to construct, operate, and test a variety of unmanned aerial vehicles. Tests include, but are not limited to, airframe modifications, sensor operation, and onboard computer development. A small, manned chase plane is used to track the unmanned aerial vehicles,” reads the report Energy Department contractor Bechtel SAIC prepared in 2008 for the Yucca Mountain repository license application.
The National Nuclear Security Administration is a semi-autonomous branch of the Energy Department. Its Nevada field office, based in North Las Vegas, runs the security site.
What it costs to operate Area 6 is difficult to determine. Funding is buried in the Nevada field office’s Strategic Partnership Program, which was part of the $84 million budgeted for the entire security site in fiscal year 2015. Program funding was about 13.5 percent of the field office’s $622 million total budget that year.
The program’s activities include research and development of sensors for detecting explosive materials, deadly gases and chemicals, and radioactive sources that could be used in “dirty bombs.”
Biological weapon sources aren’t allowed at the security site, according to its environmental impact statement.
Portable radiation monitors and some sensors used in airports and at ports of entry have evolved from the program.
Morgan said agencies in the Strategic Partnership Program take advantage of the security site’s restricted airspace to test sensor-equipped aircraft work without public interference or spying from space.
“We have controlled airspace and that gives them opportunities to test various types of platforms,” he said.
Most of the strategic partnership money comes from Defense Department branches: the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
“We do a wide variety of work for others … supporting people with sensor development activities,” Morgan said. “It evolved from the nuclear testing program. We had to have very good sensors to collect data in a split second before they were obliterated.”
Morgan said the Area 6 runway and its apron were built by Bechtel Nevada, the site’s management and operations contractor at the time, at a cost of $9.6 million. The buildings were constructed over several years, and cost figures aren’t immediately available.
As seen from above on Google Earth, the complex is dominated by the clamshell-door hangar and four smaller outbuildings connected by what appear to be covered walkways. Two smaller modern hangars and an older one used during atomic test days round out the facility. Morgan said antennas were installed to allow ground operators to control the flight of unmanned aerial system aircraft.
LOOKING FOR ‘EVILDOERS’
The National Nuclear Security Administration has kept Area 6 so low profile that even defense industry experts were unaware of it.
“I had not heard about it,” said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, an Alexandria, Va.-based defense information website.
But Pike’s associate, imagery analyst Tim Brown, has estimated the hangar complex could hold about 15 MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted spy planes.
Pike said the length of the runway suggests Area 6 is used for small planes or remotely piloted aircraft such as Predator and Reaper reconnaissance drones.
Bigger spy planes, such as the jet-powered RQ-170 Sentinel unmanned aircraft system, are flown from the Tonopah Test Range by the 30th Reconnaissance Squadron assigned to a Creech Air Force Base wing. It’s unclear if the Sentinel or smaller versions would be flown from Area 6, but Pike said the runway is too small for large jets and bombers. Takeoffs and landings would be tight for an F-16, for example, and an F-15 would need an even longer strip for safe maneuvers.
Pike said aircraft likely in use at Area 6 are best suited for surveillance of hidden targets, weapons or personnel on the ground, particularly in sparsely populated areas. The security site’s high-desert terrain is similar to what might be found in the “boondocks” of Libya, he noted.
“There is a well-founded fear that evildoers are stalking around out there — ISIS and al-Qaida,” he said of Libya. “You have to imagine that trying to develop targeting signatures in this type of mountainous desert terrain. That’s got to be a really high priority … not constrained by funding.”
“I can’t think about a better place to do it where you wouldn’t have civilians stumbling on what you’re doing,” he said in reference to the security site.
So what would stray civilians see if they could stumble in?
Pike offers an educated guess: Sensor arrays made up of more than 350 smartphone cameras mounted on an MQ-9 Reaper that can record and archive movements of people and vehicles over an area of about 40 square miles.
It is known in the unmanned aerial vehicle community as the “Gorgon Stare,” derived from Gorgon monsters of Greek mythology whose gaze was so dreadful it was said to turn a person into stone. While the sensors can’t do that, they can keep terrorist targets from evading the sights of U.S. weapons.
According to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency website, sensor development has soared to new heights under ARGUS, or the Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance program.
The goal is to “provide at least 130 independently steerable video streams to enable real-time tracking of individual targets throughout the field of view. The ARGUS-IR system will also provide continuous updates of the entire field of view for enhanced situational awareness,” the defense tech agency website says.
Pike said improving ARGUS and similar sensor capabilities might be among the activities taking place at Area 6.
“The thing you get with ARGUS is time-lapse photography. If there’s a rock out there that’s moving, maybe that’s a rock you ought to be paying attention to. Maybe it has to do with evildoers,” he said.
“I would assume they have airplanes and UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) they’re flying around out there to see what they can see,” Pike said.
“If they would let me run the thing, I’d tell (special operation troops) to go out and do the best in terms of infiltration,” he said. “Then turn loose the sensors and see if we could find them, play hide-and-seek.”

Het Amerikaans leger spendeert miljoenen dollars aan de ontwikkeling van een implantaat dat het menselijk brein in staat zou stellen om rechtstreeks te communiceren met computers. Als ze daarin slagen, dan zijn de eerste cyborgs een feit.

De ontwikkelingsafdeling van het Pentagon, het Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA) maakte in januari bekend dat het 62 miljoen dollar uittrekt voor het project. Volgens Phillip Alvelda, de progammamanager van DARPA is de bedoeling van het implantaat "om het kanaal tussen het menselijk brein en moderne elektronica te openen".
Het implantaat zou niet groter zijn dan een kubieke centimeter en zal proberen om neuronen uit de hersenen om te zetten in elektronische signalen. Daarmee creëert het een nooit geziene "bandbreedte voor dataoverdracht tussen het menselijk brein en de digitale wereld", zo staat in de bekendmaking van het nieuwe project te lezen.
Volgens DARPA legt het implantaat de basis voor nieuwe therapieën die mensen met gezichts- en gehoorproblemen kunnen helpen door "digitale audio- of visuele informatie binnen te brengen in de hersenen."
Het programma is volgens DARPA niet bestemd voor militaire doeleinden, maar sommige experts zien tal van mogelijke toepassingen voor een dergelijk implantaat, ook op militair vlak. Volgens Conor Walsh, een professor in mechanische en biomedische techniek aan de universiteit van Harvard zou het implantaat "de spelregels veranderen", omdat "in de toekomst draagbare robottoestellen bestuurd zullen worden door implantaten".
Volgens Walsh zullen dergelijke draagbare robottoestellen of exoskeletten bijvoorbeeld een patiënt kunnen helpen herstellen na een beroerte of de capaciteiten van soldaten verhogen in oorlogssituaties.
Het Amerikaanse leger ontwikkelt momenteel een exoskelet dat de drager bijkomende bescherming moet bieden tegen vijandelijk vuur en technologie in de helm verbetert de communicatiemogelijkheden en het zicht van de drager. In theorie zou het nieuwe implantaat het moeten mogelijk maken om het exoskelet efficiënter te besturen.

"We hebben weinig tot geen idee over hoe het brein precies complexe informatie verwerkt," zegt hij en hij wijst erop dat het inbrengen van vreemde voorwerpen in de hersenen een hersenontsteking kan veroorzaken: dat kan leiden tot ernstige neurologische problemen.
DARPA erkent dat het nog een hele tijd zal duren voor het implantaat volledig functioneel zal zijn, maar is van plan om een reeks experts in uiteenlopende disciplines te rekruteren om het project in een stroomversnelling te krijgen. Pinker blijft er echter bij dat het een "verspilling van belastingsgeld" is.

A disk-like UFO was recently filmed while speeding over Ysterplaat Airforce Base in Cape Town, South Africa. The mysterious object has caused a heated debate among UFO analysts as they are trying to understand its exact type and origins.
On February 27, 2016, a man was recording the ground run of an Avro Shackleton, a British long-range maritime patrol aircraft used by the Royal Air Force and the Sothern African Air Force in the 1950s. After reviewing the film, the man saw an anomaly that only lasted for a brief moment. After slowing the video down, he saw a mysterious object that passed right above the airbase at a tremendous speed.
Wesley Saunders of YouTube uploaded a detailed footage of the sighting, and it shows the original moment when the UFO is passing through the frame almost unnoticed, a slowed-down view with the object, and ultimately a zoomed-in frame. Besides the otherworldly speed of the UFO, the footage reveals its oval shape and a dome on top that’s reflecting the rays of light, features matching the classic UFO description. The UFO comes from the right side of the screen and it follows a curved trajectory. In real time, it’s almost invisible to the eye, or it can be misinterpreted with a bird or a particle of dust, but seen frame-by-frame, a new set of details is revealed.
According to UFO researchers, this is an example of an alien flying-disk. The amazing traveling speed leaves no doubt that the saucer is of extraterrestrial origins, and the dome revealed in the first few frames because of the sun reflecting off of it adds up even more to the extraterrestrial assumption. However, analysts are trying to figure out whether the speeding object is some kind of alien drone, or a bigger device that’s being piloted by someone. Now, it could be a drone because of the explosive speed at which the object is flying, but because of the visible dome and the relatively low traveling altitude, it could prove to be driven by someone.
This isn’t an isolated case of UFO seen near an airbase. In 2014, a video showing a similar craft being chased by a Black Hawk helicopter belonging to the Aguadilla Coastguard has been declassified. In this case, the craft was pursued for a while until it had reached the ocean. There, a second ‘companion’ emerged from the water to escort the UFO, then both crafts smoothly descended into the water, unaffected by the hydrodynamic forces.
Another case of what I presume to be an alien drone surfaced from the archives of a Russian military base. The mysterious object was caught on the surveillance cameras while closely investigating the perimeter. In this case however, the UFO has a smaller size, and it is cloaked by an intense layer of brightness, making its features undistinguishable. So, is the UFO surprised over Ysterplaat Airforce Base in South Africa a drone, or is it rather a complex alien craft?
After analyzing the above mentioned cases, the object is likely to be an authentic alien craft rather than a drone. It presents a metallic design that’s glowing when exposed to sunlight, and its trajectory is not linear, facts pointing towards an artificial design, and since drones are presumably luminous and smaller in size, the speeding object is, in my opinion, an authentic alien craft. Whoever is piloting the device, and what’s it trying to obtain remains a matter of interpretation, but considering that the place of sighting is near the meeting place of three important oceans (Atlantic, Southern, and Indian Ocean,) it’s extremely possible that an underwater ET base is found nearby. Seeing the advanced capabilities of these otherworldly crafts, it’s easy to understand how they manage to stay hidden for so long.

Op het vliegveld van Kaapstad is een antiek Shackleton vliegtuig bezig met het starten van de motoren.
Dan opeens verschijnt er iets in beeld dat lijkt op een heel nieuwsgierige UFO.
Nogal eens worden er door mensen bijzondere opnames gemaakt van vliegende objecten waar echt niemand een verklaring voor heeft.
Zo was een Zuid Afrikaan met de naam Wesley Saunders onlangs op het vliegveld van Kaapstad, waar een antiek Shackleton vliegtuig net de motoren had gestart.
Terwijl hij staat te filmen schiet er opeens een UFO van rechts naar links door het beeld, zoals te zien is op de volgende foto’s:
Wanneer je de onderstaande video bekijkt op originele snelheid, zie je dat het ding met een enorme snelheid door het beeld vliegt.
Het is geen groot object en dus misschien hebben we hier te maken een soort buitenaardse verkennings-drone die eens poolshoogte komt nemen bij dit mooie antieke vliegtuig.
Wat het is weten we niet, maar dat er iets vliegt en dat het onbekend is, zoveel is zeker.

Some UFO enthusiasts suggest the video proves the existence of an extraterrestrial base in the famed park underneath the Old Faithful geyser.
Secure Team 10 YouTube channel, through Tyler Glockner, posted the video to the commercial video sharing website.
Glockner said that the U.S. government has long been suspected to have taken over pieces of land in Yellowstone Park and built facilities underground. However, Glockner alleged that the government makes it look like a conservation work.
Another possibility is that the government allows aliens to build facilities underground, according to Glockner, who also does not rule out the possibility that alien activity has been going on in the area without the consent of the government.
Another scenario that Glockner speculated is that there are spaces in Yellowstone where unauthorized people aren’t allowed to go because the government knows something that the public doesn’t know.
Alien hunters have been claiming that the U.S. government has been hiding secret proof of alien operations in Yellowstone Park.

Project Blue Beam is a highly controversial conspiracy theory.
Originally proposed by Canadian journalist Serge Monast in 1994, it holds that the New World Order will use advanced holographic technology in order to create a false flag alien invasion and/or a worldwide religious ‘awakening’ in order to achieve servitude by the masses and acceptance of a one world government and religion, possibly de population efforts as well.
PROJECT BLUE BEAM: IMPLEMENTATION
There are supposedly 4 parts to the implementation of Project Blue Beam. These stages include:
- The dissolution of major religions due to archaeological discoveries disproving them.
- A holographic ‘space show’ in which deities and aliens appear as our overlords (it is not clear how these two would coexist).
- Telepathic Electronic Two Way Communication, via ELF(Extra Low Frequency), VLF (Very Low Frequency), and LF (Low Frequency) waves, whereby people will think they are being spoken to by the new true God or extraterrestrial overlords.
- Use of worldwide microchips to fabricate horrifying supernatural events that will make people desperate for the New World Order.
Some proponents of Project Blue Beam say it is a standard psi op, infused by advanced technologies being developed by HAARP. These proponents say there is already evidence of a covert psi op military group called the First Battalion, which may have already created holographic simulations of UFOs. Combined with LRAD induced auditory projections known as holosonic sound beams, they say, the technology to pull off the ‘hallucination’ already exists.
Others say Blue Beam has been a long running project that has included UFOs and paranormal experimentation. They say the confluence of an alien threat along with deep religious undertones will create a panic among the masses, which will result in the use of nuclear weaponry and then full disarmament, as national governments are punished.
Could legendary conspiracist Bill Cooper have been right when he said there’s been a plan in place since 1917 to create an artificial extraterrestrial threat?
The religious component may also involve the promulgation of a false flag Rapture, a divine intervention of an alleged “good” alien force coming to save the Earth’s population from a brutal satanic attack. The production may go so far as to involve believers being swooped up into the sky, as though being reclaimed by God, an act eerily similar to alien abductions that may have been in rehearsal for decades.
While skeptics cite that several prominent ideas from Project Blue Beam look to have been mined from an early Star Trek movie script, this doesn’t hide that fact that history is full of false flag attacks. The wonder President Reagan notoriously expresses during his United Nations address can easily be flipped around and seen as food for thought for an inevitable tool of black propaganda.

SCIENTISTS ARE PREPARING TO DRILL INTO THE SITE OF THE IMPACT THAT KILLED OFF THE DINOSAURS
This month, in the Gulf of Mexico, a drilling site will be constructed. Typically, these sites are built for oil extraction, but this one is for a more valiant pursuit.
Scientists plan to drill into the site, known as the Chicxulub crater, where 66 million years ago an asteroid impacted and killed off the dinosaurs and many other life forms on Earth.
The goal is to discover rock cores that will potentially give insights into how life rebounded after such a devastating event. They believe the crater could have been a breeding ground for microbial life that then evolved into the life forms of today.
The process of drilling into the circular ridge of the 180-kilometer-wide crater rim could prove or disprove theories about how "peak rings" take form.
“Chicxulub is the only preserved structure with an intact peak ring that we can get to,” says geophysicist Sean Gulick of the University of Texas, Austin, and co–chief scientist for the $10 million project, sponsored by the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) and the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program. To Disclose.tv, “All the other ones are either on another planet, or they’ve been eroded.”
At around 800 meters below the surface, the drill will reach the crater, where some scientists predict they will find a decrease of shell-producing animals that make up the limestone, as a result of life recovering from the impact.
Others predict carbon dioxide released by the impact may have acidified the oceans, which would have resulted in many more secondary and tertiary extinctions. The results of this project will give us many insights into the resilience of life and how even when the odds seem impossible, life often finds a way.
If you like the idea of cruising on a ship in laid-back luxury, but prefer the speed and convenience of air travel, there may soon be a solution. Drawing their inspiration from the airships of yesteryear, a new generation of airship-like vehicles could soon be making their way across our skies. In a hangar outside Tustin in California, engineers are preparing one of the most radical designs for testing. The Aeroscraft, as it is known, is the brainchild of Igor Pasternak and has been made possible by advances in materials and computer control systems. “We are resurrecting [the airship] with new composite fabric structures, that are stronger, lighter, more versatile” says Fred Edworthy, of Aeros, the company building the lighter-than-air vehicle. The airship in the hangar is being built to test various key components of a design that could one day contain a hotel, casino or spa. However, the company believes one of its biggest markets could be transporting freight from hard-to-reach locations or, for example, carrying wind turbine blades. Currently blades are as large as they can be to be transported on a truck. “It’s a new era for logistics in cargo. Transport is our first aim for these craft,” says Edworthy. “It’s impossible to get into some of the resource rich areas of the world. Ecologically, you can’t do it. Areas of the far north, or the Amazon are good examples.” Planes need large runways, and helicopters can only carry limited loads. But the Aeroscraft can take-off and land vertically using turbofans that can swivel to provide lift and move the craft forward.
Rising up
The whole process of loading and unloading, as well as getting off the ground and keeping the ship aloft is helped by an ingenious system held within the frame of the ship. “The biggest advancement is our buoyancy management system that allows the vehicle to operate autonomously – without the hundreds of people that you saw grabbing the Zeppelin type airships,” says Edworthy. The system gets around a major drawback of traditional airships which have difficulty controlling lift, and need ballasts to reach the correct altitude, and ropes and docking stations are needed on the ground to stop a vessel floating off. Instead, the Aeroscraft uses large bags, or bladders, inside a rigid structure. When the pilot wants to descend, the vehicle needs to be heavier, so the helium in the main body of the craft is compressed and put into storage chambers. That creates a relative vacuum inside the body, which draws air from the outside. Air is heavier than helium, so the vehicle sinks. To rise again, the stored helium is released back into the body of the aircraft, pushing the air out of the bags and replacing the volume it filled with lightweight helium. “We can control the buoyancy, and allow ourselves to come to the ground and land vertically as well as take off vertically,” says Edworthy. That is the biggest advancement over the last 100 years.” The whole process is controlled from a cockpit, which is also designed to be retractable to allow the craft to be as aerodynamic as possible. During flight it can be moved inside the vehicle, and the pilots will have “virtual” views on screens. The whole assembly is lowered below the airship body for landing or when visibility is needed. The craft is also designed to be as simple to fly as possible. Fibre-optics around the aircraft link touch screens in the cockpit with actuators and controls in the engines or on the control surfaces. “We moved from the typical aircraft paradigm where we have pedals, to a 6 degree of freedom joystick,” says Munir Jojo-Verge, aerospace control flight engineer for the firm. “You can control the vehicle with one hand – roll, pitch, yaw. This is a huge step.” Ease of control will be critical when the firms’ next generation craft, which are twice the size of the test vehicle under construction, are built. Assuming they pass their flight tests, which will begin later this year, the big question is whether anyone will choose to fly in them. For all of their cutting edge design and elegance, they will still only travel at about quarter of the speed of a passenger jet. “It will be slower than a 747 [plane] at approximately 110 knots (approx 200km/h) cruising speed,” admits Edworthy. “But it would be the event of ‘getting there’ rather than how quickly you get there.”

This eerie portrait of Mars' moon Phobos in ultraviolet light was snapped by the NASA orbiter MAVEN as their orbits crossed paths.
Phobos is the nearer and stranger of Mars' two moons — in the 1950s and 1960s, some scientists thought that its unusual orbit, spiraling inward, suggested that it might be a hollow, artificial body. The little moon has long, shallow grooves along its sides, likely caused by the pull of Mars, and it moves about 6.6 feet (2 meters) closer to the Red Planet every hundred years, NASA officials have said.
In fact, Phobos is the closest moon to its planet in the solar system, circling Mars at just 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) above its surface. It's so close that it orbits within the sphere of Mars' thin atmosphere — the blue pixels that form the new portrait's background are the ultraviolet light scattered from hydrogen gas in Mars' extended upper atmosphere. The orange comes from longer ultraviolet wavelengths of sunlight reflected from the moon's surface.
NASA's MAVEN (short for Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution) mission snapped the shot with its Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph in December 2015 as its orbit crossed paths with Phobos', and researchers are hoping MAVEN's measurements will help determine what the moon is made of, where it came from and whether it has organic molecules on its surface. (A previous measurement, by the Mars Express spacecraft, found evidence of such organic molecules.)
"The images will allow MAVEN scientists to better assess the composition of this enigmatic object, whose origin is unknown," NASA officials said in a statement.

The futuristic space plane Orion III from the science fiction movie epic "2001: A Space Odyssey" has landed in Space.com's offices.
Our resident infographic master Karl Tate is what we'll call a megafan when it comes to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." So we weren't surprised when an extremely detailed model of the Orion III space plane appeared in his office. But we were impressed to learn that it might be the most accurate model of its kind in existence.
You can see photos of the model here and a clip of the film that includes the ship's exterior here. This was an entirely fan-made item; there are no officially licensed models of the ship available for purchase (or of any of the other ships from the movie, for that matter). The attention to detail is impressive, especially considering that the actual model used in the film was destroyed, so there was very little information to go on when re-creating it. In the film, the Orion III spaceship carries passengers from Earth to a handful of nearby destinations, including the Space Station V.
The ship is where Kubrick executed one of his many tricks to create the illusion of weightlessness: the floating pen was achieved by sticking the pen to a pane of glass (larger than the camera frame) and moving the glass in such a way as to make it look like the pen was floating in the air.
However, the interior scenes of Orion III were shot on a set; the exterior shots of the spaceplane were created using a photograph of the 4-foot-long (1.2 meters) model.
The Orion III model that appears in Tate's office started with this resin model that is available for purchase. The resin molds were made from a wood model carved by aerospace engineer Adam K. Johnson, who is also the author of "2001: The Lost Science," about the scientific infrastructure of the movie created by the filmmakers.
But customers who order the resin model won't get the same ship that Tate owns. That model was given a makeover by professional prop-maker Stephen Dymszo (who also made one for himself). Using various source materials, including some high-resolution images of the original model and blueprints for the cockpit interior, Dymszo said he added 286 additional parts to each model, and spent roughly 280 hours on each of them.
Some of the additional details include two probes that extend off the very back of the ship. Tate, a graphic designer, created blueprints for the probes, and the pair had them made out of stainless steel from a machine stop. The model also has stainless steel reinforcements to make it more durable, Dymszo said. Most of the additions were plastic strips and sheets for the exterior. Tate also made the Pan American logos, and created the designs for some of the other surface details.
Kubrick used extremely harsh lighting for the space shots (to mimic direct sunlight), which tended to wash out any details on the model, so the original creators used a colorful, patchwork paint job to give the ship more contrast. In the finished film, however, the ship looks almost uniformly gray. Dymszo's paint job is meant to look like the model itself; Tate said he is fully aware that the pastel colors might draw comparisons to Easter eggs.
Dymszo said this model might be the most accurate re-creation of the original model in existence, even though Tate pointed out that there are some obvious differences in the overall shape of the two ships. The Museum of Science Fiction, set to open in Washington, D.C., has a 6-foot (1.8 m) model of Orion III that might be shaped more accurately, but it is also 2 feet (0.6 m) longer than the actual movie model. The museum's version is also painted entirely in shades of grey, instead of the colorful patchwork of colors that Dymszo used.
"I've been making models and miniatures since I was actually very young," Dymszo told Space.com. "And most people sort of grow out of [model making] when they're ten, twelve years old, and they move on to other things. I never stopped. Literally. So I've built thousands and thousands of models."
"But back in the 90's I realized you could actually make money building models," he said. "So I started doing it professionally and it's been going on ever since. We've done work for Sony studios; I made 45 weapons for the movie 'Blade II'; helped MGM with a [James] Bond commercial one time. So I've been doing all kinds of crazy projects like that since about 1995."
Unless you're lucky enough to have Dymszo as a friend, you probably won't be able to get your hands on one of these anytime soon (although you might be able to find one of these Orion III models made by Aurora). In fact, licensed merchandise from "2001" was very limited until recently. In 2014, Taschen books released a four-volume book that, according to the company's website, is "the most exhaustive publication ever devoted" to the film. There is also a single-volume version of the book. Then, earlier this year, Go Hero began selling two extremely detailed licensed collector figures from the movie: astronauts Dave Bowman and Frank Poole. Perhaps fans of this space-movie epic will start to see licensed merchandise become available.

A new image taken using the Hubble Space Telescope has given us an image of the farthest galaxy ever imaged. More than 30 billion light-years away, we see it as it was 13.4 billion years in the past.
GOING THE EXTRA MILE
While much has been said about the planned successors to NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope (WFIRST and the James Webb), Hubble has shown that it can still perform admirably. In fact, a recent announcement has just added another notch to the list of Hubble’s achievements.
An international team of astronomers has used the space telescope to shatter the cosmic distance record by measuring the farthest galaxy ever seen in the universe. This bright, infant galaxy, named GN-z11, is seen as it was 13.4 billion years in the past (just 400 million years after the Big Bang).
“We’ve taken a major step back in time, beyond what we’d ever expected to be able to do with Hubble. We see GN-z11 at a time when the universe was only three percent of its current age,”explained principal investigator Pascal Oesch.
Astronomers are trying to focus on the first galaxies that formed in the universe and, with this discovery, they are closing in on them. The observations brought astronomers to a realm of galaxies that was previously thought to be reachable only with NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope.
LOOKING BACK IN TIME
Scientists measure astronomical distances by determining the “redshift” of a galaxy, which is a result of the expansion of the universe. To break this down a bit, redshift is a result of light being stretched to longer (and consequently redder) wavelengths as space expands as the light travels to our telescope. By measuring this redshift, we are able to obtain a precise measure of where the light traveled from.
The previous galaxy that was a record holder had a redshift of 8.68, which means we see it as it was some 13.2 billion years in the past. GN-z11, in comparison, has a redshift of 11.1, which puts it at the aforementioned 13.4 billion years and 200 million years closer to the Big Bang. The researchers estimate that the record could only be surpassed with the help of the James Webb Space Telescope.
Even though it is far away, we still know a lot about it (relatively speaking).
The imaging of GN-z11 reveals it is 25 times smaller than our galaxy and has one percent of our galaxy’s mass in stars. It is growing fast, forming stars at a rate 20 times greater than our galaxy. This is part of the reason why the galaxy is unexpectedly bright when imaged.
The results also provide new clues about the nature of the very early universe, but while these results are exciting, it is but a tantalizing preview of the observations that the James Webb Space Telescope could offer after it is launched into space in 2018.

A new study is showing that carbon from Mercury's original crust is the reason the planet looks so dark. Data from the MESSENGER mission further supports this.
You might be surprised to hear that the closest planet to the sun has an immensely dark surface. For a long time, Mercury’s lack of sunlight left scientists puzzled. The planet’s surface isn’t littered with iron-rich materials, known to be a darkening agent. So just what makesMercury so dim?
A new study from Johns Hopkins University claims the answer is carbon. The element has ancient origins from deep within the planet itself.
Questioning Comets
Patrick Peplowski, of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and his team used data from the MESSENGER mission to study the accumulation of carbon on Mercury. Prior to these studies, scientists proposed that the carbon came from comets that traveled into the inner Solar System.
Poplowski’s team came to a different conclusion. Rather than being delivered by comets, the carbon most likely originated deep below the surface, in the form of a now-disrupted and buried ancient graphite-rich crust, some of which was later brought to the surface by impact processes after most of Mercury’s current crust had formed.
Co-author and Deputy Principal Investigator of the MESSENGER mission, Carnegie’s Larry Nittler, explained: “The previous proposal of comets delivering carbon to Mercury was based on modelling and simulation. Although we had prior suggestions that carbon may be the darkening agent, we had no direct evidence. We used MESSENGER’s Neutron Spectrometer to spatially resolve the distribution of carbon and found that it is correlated with the darkest material on Mercury, and this material most likely originated deep in the crust. Moreover, we used both neutrons and X-rays to confirm that the dark material is not enriched in iron, in contrast to the Moon where iron-rich minerals darken the surface.”
MESSENGER obtained its statistically robust data via many orbits during its last year of operation. Repeated Neutron Spectrometer measurements showed higher amounts of low-energy neutrons, a signature consistent with the presence of elevated carbon, coming from the surface when the spacecraft passed over concentrations of the darkest material.
Figuring out exactly how much carbon was present required combining the neutron measurements with other MESSENGER datasets, including X-ray measurements and reflectance spectra.
Together, the data indicate that Mercury’s surface rocks are made up of as much as a few weight percent graphitic carbon, much higher than on other planets. Graphite has the best fit to the reflectance spectra, at visible wavelengths, and the likely conditions that produced the material.
The Original Ancient Crust
When Mercury was in its infancy, much of the planet most likely consisted of an “ocean” of molten magma. Scientists believe that, as this magma cooled, most minerals that solidified would sink. Graphite though, would have been buoyant and floated to form the original crust of Mercury.
“The finding of abundant carbon on the surface suggests that we may be seeing remnants of Mercury’s original ancient crust mixed into the volcanic rocks and impact ejecta that form thesurface we see today. This result is a testament to the phenomenal success of the MESSENGER mission and adds to a long list of ways the innermost planet differs from its planetary neighbors and provides additional clues to the origin and early evolution of the inner Solar System,” concluded Nittler.
