Is er sprake van een cover-up rond UFO’s? Amerikaanse overheidsfunctionaris doet boekje open
Is er sprake van een cover-up rond UFO’s? Amerikaanse overheidsfunctionaris doet boekje open
An Ohio witness east of Westerville reported a close encounter with a triangle UFO after getting a psychic impression to go outside, according to testimony in Case 76141 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The incident occurred at 10:05 p.m., on September 14, 2015, and was reported to MUFON on May 1, 2016.

“I observed the same bright light approaching from the north that I had seen just a few nights prior and I had no camera with me,” the witness stated.“The craft entered my frame of vision from the west skimming the tree tops, turned 90 degrees on a dime, and the craft was moving directly at me.”
The witness described the craft’s lighting.
“The navigational lights were that of a jet, but the headlight was 10 times brighter than a typical jet headlight. I had just taken my camera in from my night of sky gazing, took the dog out, took her back in, and started to lock up the door for the night when I got a ‘psychic’ message to return outside and to stand by a particular tree, which I did. Very strange.”
But the idea to go outside to this particular location quickly paid off.
“Sure as the devil, that’s when I spotted the craft approaching from the west and just north of me. I backed away from the tree and boldly stood as the craft centered directly between my eyes and came overhead at an estimated 15 – 20 mph. or less.”

The craft was also very well lit.
“It presented what appeared to be a full display of lights, including a ring of brilliant, red, individual lights, dead center in the belly of the craft. It was lit like ‘Times Square’ and utterly silent. Another triangle, but this time, just over my head. This time, left light red and right, green; different from prior, higher slightly, higher altitude sightings of two triangles together, with red and white lights only, from days earlier. The head-beam was brighter than the moon and cast for a couple miles forward, at least, and came over at an estimated 100 feet – 125 feet at best. It was very low and slow.”
The object was also moving very slow.
“I know I said 15 – 20 mph., but in reality it may have been moving at 5 mph. for all I know. I was hypnotized by the green light and a feeling of peace and love that came over me. Again, very strange.”
The witness was amazed at the sighting.
“Whoever or whatever they are, allowed me to see the entire craft. I was in absolute awe. And Iwasn’t the least bit frightened. I know the light mesmerized me as I stood smiling at the craft approaching me. If it were any lower, I could have hit it with a rock. As it passed overhead, I was dead center with the brilliant, red belly lights. If they wanted to abduct me, they could have. As it was about to exit our property, the only sound it made was a low crackling sound. The back edge was trimmed with yellow-orange oblong ports. I got a great look at the craft, but missed a sensational photo op. This struck me as a total anti-gravity craft, as the giant equilateral triangle barely moved through the air, with no wind or air disturbance being generated whatsoever.”

Ohio MUFON Chief Investigator Ron McGlone is investigating. Westerville is a city in Delaware and Franklin counties Ohio, population 36,120. An Indonesian witness at North Jakarta reported watching and videotaping a metallic object under 500 meters with an apparent diameter of 5 meters, according to testimony in Case 68460 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside in a basketball field with his wife and son at 5:42 p.m. on July 17, 2015, when the incident occurred.
“First noticed the object when pointing out the hunting bats and swallows to my son,” the witness stated.“It was on my south and moving towards the northwest direction. First impression of the object was that it was somewhat spherical and moving at a constant speed and constant altitude. Altitude was from the best of my judgement around the 300-500 meters high, and moving slowly and constantly throughout the event at about 50 meters per minute.”

The witness described the object.
“As it drew nearer to my location, the shape looked more like a slightly vertically squashed sphere, akin to a red blood cell. It had a metallic sheen because it clearly reflected the orange glow of the setting sun. Upon longer inspection, the shape seemed to be constantly, slightly distorting and bobbling because the reflected sunlight was not consistent, although the object largely held its original shape.”
The witness tried to guess the object’s size.
“Judging from the distance and altitude, my best guess is the object is at least 5 meters in diameter. After about a minute after noticing the object, I used my iPhone 5S to video the object as best as I could, although limited phone memory cut short the duration of the video. After I finished recording, the object started to slowly make a very wide arc to the left, without changing speed or altitude, and changed direction southwesterly, which means moving away from my location.”

The witness attempted to follow the object on foot.
“I then started to walk/jog and chased the object for about 1-2 minutes over 150 meters, then ceased because I didn’t want to leave my wife and son behind in the basketball field. The object then slowly moved away and disappeared over the treeline after a couple more minutes.”
The witness thought that the object was unusual.
“What drew me to the object in the first place was that I never saw anything like it before. During the sighting and afterwards, considering the things I saw, my impression largely is that the object is probably man-made, maybe a stray weather balloon that drifted with the wind. The few things bugging me is the shape of the object, which is like a red blood cell, the definite metallic sheen of the surface, and the changing of the direction of the object, albeit slowly. Video is also not very supportive because of the maximum zoom, large distance to the object and me constantly moving around. Would really like to have somebody from MUFON to contact via phone or email to exchange ideas on this.”

Cheryl Lee Vanagelis for MUFON International closed this case as an Unknown.
“In the video you can see at normal speed a flash which is an orb on the left-hand side moving to the right and touching the triangle morphed, and then releases itself and moves at lightspeed to the left and disappearing,” Vanagelis wrote in her report.“In slow motion the flash and orb do not appear. You’ll need to adjust brightness and gamma. I see a ‘cloudwalker’ morphing into a small boomerang shape for a milli-second, and then morph back into a ‘cloudwalker shape,’ before it stretches and flies off fast. I can also see atmospheric activity surrounding it. Unfortunately, the video is not able to snapshot and increase size without pixilation of the picture. Based on my studies on these types of UFOs, it is a good capture of a ‘cloudwalker’ possibly energizing or feeding off the dimensional cloaking layer.”
Is There a UFO Cover-up? A Government Insider Speaks Out
Is There a UFO Cover-up? A Government Insider Speaks Out
Leslie Kean, Author, New York Times bestseller, ‘UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record’
About six months ago, our board at UFODATA was privileged to welcomeChristopher Mellon as the newest member of our team. Chris spent nearly 20 years in the federal government serving in various national security positions. For the first time, he has agreed to speak publicly about his experiences within government as they relate to UFOs.
It is unusual for a man of Chris’s stature to speak openly about UFOs, which gives his statements great weight. His positions during the Clinton and Bush administrations involved high clearances; in fact, there are few people who have enjoyed such deep and wide-ranging access to compartmented programs in both the Defense Department (DoD) and the intelligence community. Chris is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Reconnaissance Office Gold Medal and the Defense Intelligence Agency Director’s Medal.
At DoD, Chris served on a small committee that provided oversight of all DoD special access programs, in order to eliminate potential waste and duplication. The oversight included visits to Area 51 and other sensitive facilities. He also spent over a decade on the Senate Intelligence Committee, involved in oversight of NRO, CIA, NSA and other intelligence organizations. He became the first Congressional official to review all of the NSA’s compartmented programs.
I wanted to know what Chris had to say about Hillary Clinton’s implications that the government may be withholding classified UFO documents. Backed by John Podesta, chairman of her campaign, Clinton has been speaking about the need to “get to the bottom of the UFO mystery.” Her comments are unprecedented within a presidential campaign.
Here is my recent conversation with Chris Mellon, mainly conducted via email, edited only for clarity.
Q: When did you first become interested in UFOs?
A: I was about seven years old when I saw an old-fashioned amateur movie taken by a friend of our school principal. It showed a huge, golden disc-shaped object serenely moving through sunny, blue skies, passing through cumulous clouds in a manner that would be very hard to fake. I have no idea what became of the movie, but it filled me with wonder and awe. I read everything I could get my hands on afterwards and eventually did a research project on UFOs in college for a physics professor. I remain deeply intrigued.
Q: Did your colleagues in government know you were interested in UFOs? Were you afraid of being ridiculed?
A: It was something I didn’t reveal to colleagues unless I got to know them well and we became personal friends. Even then of course I wasn’t a nut about it and I certainly was not obsessed; it was simply a subject of great curiosity. It did not come up often. I was focused like a laser on my duties 99.9 percent of the time.
Q: Hillary Clinton has been asked about UFOs during her campaign. As the former Secretary of State, would she be likely to know if there were any classified government programs involving UFOs?
A: No, I don’t think so. I recall instances when White House officials sought briefings on highly compartmented DoD programs and were flatly refused. Access to such programs is on a need to know basis. In general, nobody outside DoD, including the Secretary of State, is deemed to have a need to know. Officials like John Podesta and Secretary Clinton can easily serve for years in senior positions and be avid consumers of classified intelligence analysis but never obtain access to DoD’s compartmented programs, which mostly relate to new weapons systems. Information about such programs rarely leaks because it doesn’t circulate, unlike the constant stream of leaked information regarding classified intelligence activities.
Chris (right) with former Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen in 1995. Note the inscription: “The Other Man who kept all the secrets.” Chris drafted the bill for Cohen that established the US Special Operations Command.
Q: Do you think that if Clinton is elected we can expect to learn new information about UFOs?
A: I highly doubt DoD or any other government agency is concealing UFO information. I participated in a comprehensive review of DoD’s black programs and spent over a decade conducting oversight of the national foreign intelligence program, an almost totally separate world of secrets. I visited Area 51 and other military, intelligence and research facilities. During all those years, I never detected the faintest hint of government interest or involvement in UFOs.
Q: Clinton and John Podesta have been focusing on the need for de-classifying government documents. What do you think about that?
A: While a few new, previously overlooked documents might turn up (the bureaucracy is never perfect), I do not believe they would resolve the UFO issue or provide significant new insights. I can think of one lengthy UFO report that is classified only due to concerns over sources and methods. In fact, it identified a convincing conventional explanation for the pilot sightings in this particular case. There are lots of classified documents related to activities at Area 51, where high security is needed. But this is all legitimate stuff the American people would support. They have nothing to do with UFOs, to the best of my knowledge.
Q: Do you recall any incidents involving UFOs while you were in government?
A: Yes, there were a handful of incidents. Knowing of my interest in UFOs, a breathless naval aviator called me one day to report that he was present minutes earlier when a Navy jet landed after being circled by a UFO in broad daylight. The Navy did not pursue the issue as far as I could tell. I also recall the Maui Optical Tracking Facility, which tracks satellites, recording a flight of four or five fiery UFOs traversing the night sky. Nobody knew what to make of it. But no government official expressed the slightest interest even after the tape was featured on ABC’s Nightline. I found the utter lack of scientific curiosity due to political correctness highly frustrating.
Q: How do you think the press and public will react if Clinton is elected, makes the inquiries she promised, but comes up empty-handed?
A: I think the conspiracy theorists will be angry and unconvinced, while the general public may conclude UFOs are not a worthwhile topic. If Clinton really wants to get to the bottom of the UFO issue, I think she should officially task NORAD with collection and analysis responsibility. Simultaneously, she should assign the Office of Science and Technology Policy the job of reviewing available evidence, coordinating with other countries and providing scientific assessments and recommendations.
Q: The taboo against taking UFOs seriously is a huge problem. How can we get more government officials to change this ingrained attitude?
A: I think we have to ask ourselves a key question, and then bring it forward. “Are there UFO cases that are sufficiently well-documented to warrant a scientific investigation of the phenomenon?” In my view, the answer is yes.
The patterns in the data are too strong; the reports from credible witnesses separated widely by time and place too similar; the evidence from videos and trained military and law enforcement observers too extensive; and the independent radar data in select cases correlates too highly with visual observations to safely ignore. Finally, when someone you trust and respect, like a naval aviator, looks you in the eye and tells you he saw something truly extraordinary at close range, it’s hard not to take his testimony seriously. It is arrogant, unreasonable and unwise to dismiss such reports. We should simply and impartially follow the trail wherever it leads.
Q: Which credible UFO incidents have you found particularly impressive and convincing?
A: A few stand out in my mind. In November 1989, 13 police officers and hundreds of other witnesses saw two silent triangular craft gliding over Belgium. This was the beginning of a wave of sightings there lasting well over a year. Ground and air radar data were acquired as well. The Belgian Air Force investigated the events in cooperation with a team of scientists and consulted with the U.S. and NATO countries, but could not find a conventional explanation.
An artist’s rendition of the Belgium UFO that made repeated visits in 1989-90
Colonel Wilfried De Brouwer, who later became a general, presents anomalous radar readings at a 1990 press conference during the Belgian wave
On the night of March 30, 1993, over a hundred witnesses in England, including police officers and military personnel, saw a triangular-shaped craft able to rapidly accelerate in seconds from a hovering position. The British Ministry of Defensestated that “none of the usual explanations put forward to explain UFO sightings seem applicable” and concluded that the evidence showed that “an unidentified object (or objects) of unknown origin was operating over the UK.”
Similarly, multiple police officers in Southern Illinois saw an object in January 2000 that looked and behaved very similarly to the Belgian and British UFOs. In fact, the Illinois police officers’ drawings of the craft are uncannily similar to the depictions of triangular craft produced by Belgian law enforcement officers a decade earlier, as well as many others since.
A Belgian Air Force weather forecaster drew his sighting in 1990
In 2006, pilots and airport personnel witnessed a disc-shaped object hovering overO’Hare airport for over five minutes, yet no government investigation was undertaken.
And, while most sightings have conventional explanations, I think it is stunning how many reports come in regularly to groups like MUFON, with impressive detail, including photos or videos. I often hear from skeptics, “If UFOs are out there how come nobody ever gets a video with all the smartphones around?” That is ignorant, it happens all the time!
Q: Some people believe the more recent sightings in cases such as those you mentioned may simply be US government tests of experimental aircraft. Is that possible?
A: I can understand why this may seem the most plausible explanation. But I can assure you, those objects did not belong to US Department of Defense. Just before the 9/11 terrorist attacks, I was contacted by the DoD Office of Congressional Affairs. They were in a tizzy because Robert Byrd, the powerful Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, was challenging them over reports appearing in magazines such as Aviation Week and Space Technology describing an alleged super-secret US aircraft program dubbed “Aurora.”
Senator Byrd would use his budget power to punish the department severely if we lied to him or withheld information. We pursued all possible options, double-checking with the appropriate officials while reminding them of the imperative of providing an accurate response. We quickly confirmed what we already knew - that while there are always things on the drawing board, there was nothing remotely resembling such aircraft being operated by the department. We had nothing with the capacity to hover and then silently accelerate at massive speeds.
Also, it is totally uncharacteristic of the US military to conduct experimental tests of new vehicles over populated areas where security would be compromised and innocent civilians placed in harms way. That’s completely contrary to military DNA. Alien visitation is actually easier to believe than that level of stupidity being exhibited by the brilliant people developing new aircraft technologies for DoD.
Q: Are you certain there is no government cover-up?
A: It’s impossible to prove the negative, so all I can say is that I never saw any evidence of official interest in UFOs. I’d love to believe we have a crashed saucer somewhere, but I’ve never seen anything remotely supportive of such incredible claims. In my experience, on those rare occasions when UFO incidents involving the government occur, they are highly inconvenient, awkward and embarrassing for the afflicted government officials who want nothing more than to put the issue behind them as quickly as possible! The military seems generally unwilling to investigate even when UFO reports come from our own military pilots or officials in high office such as Fife Symington, the former governor of Arizona. Senior officials are so fearful of being ridiculed that they conceal any expression of interest or curiosity.
Q: Some inside sources have proposed that retrieved hardware from a UFO may exist within a private aerospace company which has become independent from the DoD. In this way, it would be exempt from government oversight and known only to a few people. Do you think this is possible?
A: I find it hard to imagine something as explosive as recovered alien technology remaining under wraps for decades. So while I have no reason to believe there is any recovered alien technology, I will say this: If it were me, and I were trying to bury it deep, I’d take it outside government oversight entirely and place it in a compartment as a new entity within an existing defense company and manage it as what we call an “IRAD” or “Independent Research and Development Activity.”
Q: So where does this all leave us, and what is to be done?
A: In my view, calling for the end to an alleged government UFO cover-up is almost certainly a dead end, and does not help inspire anyone in government to become more open to the topic. The UFO mystery is a scientific problem. A true scientist seeks and follows the data no matter how politically incorrect the facts may be. The greatest scientific breakthroughs occur when we verify information that challenges conventional wisdom. That’s why I joined the board of UFODATA.
Q: I’m so glad you did. What kinds of new data are you hoping we will collect?
A: Our team of scientists and engineers are designing and will build a large network of automated surveillance stations with sophisticated sensors to capture a wide range of data. The stations will house cameras to record both an image and spectra, a magnetometer, instrumentation to detect radiation, a gravimeter, and more. They will be mobile so that we can readily deploy them to areas that become hotspots of UFO activity. We can then make the data available to the scientific community for analysis.
Q: Do you think UFOs could be visitors from civilizations elsewhere?
A: I’m certainly intrigued by the possibility. But I don’t think we will find out without a deeper scientific inquiry. I would like to invite the public to participate and support this lean but potentially groundbreaking effort, staffed by volunteers. UFODATA’s findings, one way or another, can help us to resolve this perennial mystery and perhaps even help us to better understand the universe and mankind’s place within it.

Newly discovered exoplanets may be best hope yet for finding alien life
Scientists have discovered three new planets that may be the most likely location for alien life yet discovered. The newfound planets circle a star just 40 light-years away from Earth. The findings were presented Monday in a new study in the journal Nature Geoscience The three worlds all circle the ultracool dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 , and all are just about the size of Earth. It’s even possible that the planets could be orbiting in the “habitable zone” of the host star — orbits that would allow liquid water to be sustained on the planet's surface. These worlds, however, are no Earth twins, according to the study. They are the first planets found in orbit around an ultracool dwarf star, a type of long-lived stellar object far cooler and dimmer than the sun. SEE ALSO: A planet may be forming in the habitable zone of an alien sun In fact, if you were to stand on the surface of TRAPPIST-1d, which is considered the most potentially habitable of the three planets, you would probably see a huge, red star in the sky. According to astronomer Michaël Gillon, a researcher at the University of Liege in Beligum and co-author of the new study, you would be able to look directly at the star without sunglasses. “You can see, close to the star, the two other planets. They are big enough for you to see some detail of their surface or of their atmosphere. Now let's look where you stand,” Gillon told Mashable via email. “The landscape is reddish, as the star does not emit bluer light. You are on a ground made of rocks, or of ice. Or you are on a huge reddish ocean. Maybe there [are] big volcanoes in eruption in the background," he said.
"Maybe there is some creature coming closer and closer to you. We can't say. Not yet.” Earth-sized exoplanets The question of alien life notwithstanding, Gillon and his colleagues do know a few important things about the new exoplanets. For one thing, it's clear that the three planets orbit quite close to their star. Two make a full circuit of their star once every 1.5 days and 2.4 days, respectively, while the orbit of the third planet isn’t well defined yet. Although it sounds like the planets would fry by being located so close to the star, they’re actually pretty comfortable. TRAPPIST-1 side-by-side with the sun. Image: ESO Because the star is so dim, its habitable nearer to it than it is for brighter stars, such as the sun. “On the outer planet, the temperature should be somewhere between 200 Kelvin [minus-100 degrees Fahrenheit] and 300 Kelvin [80 degrees Fahrenheit]," Gillon said. "Pretty cold, or perfect for a barbecue. On the two inner planets, the dayside is hot, above 350 Kelvin [170 degrees Fahrenheit]." “But a part of the night side could be close to 300 Kelvin, fine for spending some holidays there.” Allowing alien civilizations to grow Stars like TRAPPIST-1 can be very long-lived. Unlike more massive stars, ultracool dwarf stars are able to remain in a stable state for billions upon billions of years without running out of fuel to burn. That long-lived system could be just what life needs to thrive. The stability of this star is important, since civilizations of intelligent life likely take a long time to grow up. Artist’s impression of a view from close to one of the three planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star. Image: ESO/M. Kornmesser "They could potentially be very nice places to be for a civilization for a long time," NASA's Steve Howell, project scientist for the K2 mission, an exoplanet hunting telescope, told Mashable in an interview. Howell was not involved in the new study. "You would get civilizations that could last for a long time, or evolution of life could take a long, long time but it would have all that time before the star does something crazy," Howell said.
Ultracool dwarfs aren’t perfect, however. These types of stars can shoot off extreme flares that send radiation off into their systems, possibly impacting planets the way the most severe solar storms do when they slam into Earth’s magnetic field. Hunting for life One day, maybe in the not too distant future, scientists might actually be able to say whether there are creatures likely to be living on those worlds. Scientists have found multiple exoplanets that could potentially be habitable, but these three worlds around TRAPPIST-1 are particularly tantalizing because of their proximity to Earth. An imagined view of the three planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star. Image: ESO/M. Kornmesser/N. Risinger (s “But, unlike all previously found Earth-like exoplanets, e.g. Kepler-186f, these new planets are well-suited for detailed study, so we will be able to learn a lot about them in the near-future,” Gillon said. And researchers are already expecting plenty of follow-up observations. "At 40 light-years away, my guess is that this particular planet system will now be the most studied planet system until the next cool one comes along," Howell said. Howell expects that the Hubble Space Telescope will take a look at the three newfound planets, and the K2 mission — which is responsible for finding multiple exoplanets itself — will be able to take a look at the planetary system within the next year as part of an observing campaign. The Hubble should even be able to tell if there’s a significant amount of water in the atmospheres of the planets. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), expected to launch in 2018, will also have the ability to check out the TRAPPIST-1 system in great detail. “With JWST, we will really probe the atmosphere in detail,” Gillon said. “The study of these fascinating planets is just beginning!

Miami (AFP) - NASA announced Tuesday the discovery of 1,284 new planets outside our solar system, more than doubling the number of exoplanets found with the Kepler space telescope.
"This gives us hope that somewhere out there, around a star much like ours, we can eventually discover another Earth," said Ellen Stofan, chief scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington.
The unmanned Kepler space observatory, which launched in 2009, has been scanning 150,000 stars for signs of orbiting bodies, particularly those that might be able to support life.
It works by observing a dimming in the light of a star, known as a transit, each time an orbiting planet passes in front of it.
"Of the nearly 5,000 total planet candidates found to date, more than 3,200 now have been verified, and 2,325 of these were discovered by Kepler," NASA said in a statement.
Of the new trove of 1,284, nearly 550 could be rocky planets like Earth, based on their size, the US space agency said.
"Nine of these orbit in their sun's habitable zone, which is the distance from a star where orbiting planets can have surface temperatures that allow liquid water to pool."
- 'Goldilocks' zone -
The addition of these nine means that 21 exoplanets now are known to be circling their stars in the so-called "habitable zone," and may harbor life.
However, Kepler is a "statistical mission," NASA scientists said, and is not designed to probe further into the environmental conditions of planets that exist in the so-called "Goldilocks zone" of their stars -- neither too hot nor too cold to sustain life.
That means even the most advanced space telescopes now being built, including the James Webb Space Telescope, may not be able to shed much more light on the nature of life -- if it exists -- on another of these distant exoplanets.
"If you ask yourself the question, where is the nearest potentially habitable planet likely to be, you find that it is going to be within about 11 light-years," said Natalie Batalha, Kepler mission scientist at NASA's Ames Research Center.
Although she described that distance as "astronomically speaking... very close," one light-year equals about six trillion miles (9.5 trillion kilometers), and no spacecraft or technology exists to travel that far.
However, Kepler has already opened up a great deal about the galaxy that surrounds us.
"Before the Kepler space telescope launched, we did not know whether exoplanets were rare or common in the galaxy. Thanks to Kepler and the research community, we now know there could be more planets than stars," said Paul Hertz, astrophysics division director at NASA headquarters.
"This knowledge informs the future missions that are needed to take us ever closer to finding out whether we are alone in the universe."
The latest trove of planets was confirmed by a new statistical method, instead of the time-consuming, one-by-one process previously used.
This statistical analysis method can be applied to many planet candidates simultaneously, according to Timothy Morton, associate research scholar at Princeton University and lead author of a paper describing the findings in The Astrophysical Journal.
- Emergency event -
Kepler survived an emergency last month, when some kind of "transient event... triggered a barrage of false alarms that eventually overwhelmed the system," NASA said.
The space telescope suffered another crisis in 2013, related to a problem with the reaction wheels that typically keep the spacecraft steady.
NASA saved it back then, and set the spacecraft on a new mission called K2, to study supernovas, star clusters and far-off galaxies.
The latest failure, which NASA described as leaving the spacecraft in a "fuel-intensive coma," was discovered on April 8.
Engineers on Earth were able to rescue Kepler and restored its ability to collect data on April 22.

The number of known alien planets has just gone up by more than 60 percent.
NASA's Kepler space telescope has discovered 1,284 new exoplanets, including nine rocky worlds that might be capable of supporting life as we know it, astronomers announced today (May 10). This is by far the largest haul of alien planets ever unveiled at one time.
"We now know that exoplanets are common, most stars in our galaxy have planetary systems and a reasonable fraction of stars in our galaxy have potentially habitable planets," Paul Hertz, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., said during a news conference today. "Knowing this the first step toward addressing the question, 'Are we alone in the universe?'"
Indeed, data gathered by Kepler and other instruments suggest that about 25 percent of all the "normal" (main-sequence) stars in the Milky Way harbor roughly Earth-size planets in their habitable zones, that just-right range of distances at which liquid water can exist on a world's surface.
There are at least 70 billion main-sequence stars in the galaxy, said Kepler mission scientist Natalie Batalha, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.
"You can see, doing the math, that you're talking about tens of billions of potentially habitable, Earth-sized planets out there in the galaxy," Batalha said during today's new conference.

The $600 million Kepler mission launched in March 2009, tasked with determining how common Earth-like planets are throughout the Milky Way. The observatory finds alien worlds by noticing the tiny brightness dips caused when the planets cross the face of, or transit, their host stars from Kepler's perspective.
Kepler conducted its original planet hunt until May 2013, when the second of the telescope's four orientation-maintaining reaction wheels failed, robbing the observatory of the precise pointing ability needed to spot transiting planets. During this prime mission, Kepler found more than 4,000 planet "candidates" that needed to be confirmed by follow-up work.
Previously, astronomers had usually attempted to validate Kepler finds by observing the candidates using ground-based instruments. But the team behind today's announcement took a statistical approach, devising a confirmation method based on probability. [Gallery: A World of Kepler Planets]
This technique relies on computer simulations to determine how likely it is that a particular brightness dip was caused by a bona fide planet, as opposed to an "imposter" such as a star or brown dwarf. (A brown dwarf is a "failed star," too big to be a planet but too small to undergo nuclear fusion reactions in its interior.)
Any candidate with more than a 99 percent chance of being a real exoplanet was deemed to be validated, researchers said.
The team, led by Tim Morton of Princeton University in New Jersey, applied this statistical method to every one of the candidates spotted during Kepler's original mission. The researchers confirmed 984 previously vetted planets and identified 1,284 new worlds. An additional 1,327 are likely to be planets, whereas 707 are probably imposters, team members said.
About 550 of the newly validated 1,284 are small enough that they could be rocky, scientists said. And nine of those small planets might be able to support life, bringing the total number of confirmed habitable-zone Kepler planets to 21. (An additional 15 or so possibly rocky, habitable-zone Kepler worlds still await confirmation, Batalha said.)

Understanding exoplanets
While the sheer number of exoplanets found by Kepler is impressive, mission team members are more interested in understanding the broad outlines of the alien-planet population, Batalha said.
And the Kepler data are allowing scientists to take a good big-picture look at the galaxy's planetary systems. For example, the telescope's observations have revealed many "super-Earths" and "mini-Neptunes" — planets larger than Earth but considerably smaller than the gas giants found in the outer solar system.
"I think one of the biggest things that Kepler has shown us is that there are lots of these planets that have no analog in our solar system," Morton said.
Furthermore, the 1,284 newfound worlds further support what previous Kepler discoveries had revealed: that small, rocky worlds such as Earth are the most common type of planet in the Milky Way, Morton added.
Alien Planet Quiz: Are You an Exoplanet Expert?
Astronomers have confirmed more than 800 planets beyond our own solar system, and the discoveries keep rolling in. How much do you know about these exotic worlds?
Kepler's original planet hunt may have ended in May 2013, but the observatory is still studying the heavens today. Mission team members figured out how to stabilize the observatory using sunlight pressure and the remaining two reaction wheels, and in 2014, Kepler embarked on a new mission called K2.
The spacecraft continues to hunt for alien planets during the K2 mission, but is also studying other cosmic objects and phenomena such as supernova explosions, comets and asteroids. Kepler has enough fuel on board to continue operating until the middle of 2018, team members have said.

NASA has gotten their hands on a GoPro and they seem to be making good use of it. The agency recently strapped the camera to a rocket travelling at 3,800 mph. As one can imagine, it was quite the video. Can anyone spot the UFO?
NASA GETS EXTREME WITH THE GOPRO
Surfers, skateboarders, and amateur filmmakers all love the GoPro for its portability and ease of use. Despite having all the technology they could possibly want at their fingertips, NASA has decided to get on the GoPro bandwagon as well. The agency just produced a mesmerising video using the popular action camera, and yeah, it was action packed. NASA attached the camera to the body of a rocket that was travelling at an insane 3,800 mph. This isn’t the first time the agency has worked with this particular camera, however, it likely tops all the other videos. Despite being an incredibly entertaining film, the camera had an educational angle as well.
CAMERA USED TO ANALYZE STABILITY
NASA claims the GoPro was sued to help measure aerodynamics and the stability of the spacecraft for future launches. After lift-off, we can see the rocket’s intensity as the GoPro spins violently. In a matter of seconds, the image slowly calms down as viewers are left to gaze at the beautiful view of the rocket leaving the comforting atmosphere of Earth. From there, the rocket splits in half as one part can be seen traveling back to earth. Reports are claiming this is the most beautiful NASA video that has ever produced. While it’s hard to disagree with that, some think the agency had other motives in mind.
SPYING ON UFO
This could very well be a simple video to show off the space agency’s technology to the words, but some UFO hunters believe there is more to this video than we can imagine. According to them, UFO’s in orbit around Earth are far from rare. In fact, they are everywhere and we have documented evidence of them. The government always denies the sighting of UFO’s but could it be a cover up? Attaching a camera to a rocket may be the government’s way of spying on UFO’s. Perhaps they don’t want their rockets tampered with by alien forces or perhaps just want to discreetly observe the aliens orbiting our planet. This is all a far-fetched conspiracy theory, but stranger things have happened.

Bionic Implant Improves Vision for Some Eye Patient
Bionic Implant Improves Vision for Some Eye Patients

It may sound like something out of "Star Trek": Doctors have implanted a device in patients that has restored some central vision after advanced eye disease left those individuals with only limited peripheral vision. This is the first time that artificial and natural vision has ever been integrated in humans, the U.K.-based research team said.
The study was small and preliminary, involving only four patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The research team reported that the implant enabled the patients to recognize the outline of faces and some facial characteristics, such as whether the mouth was open or closed — ordinary details of life that had long been lost to these patients, as AMD slowly robbed them of their vision.
AMD, as the name implies, is a deterioration of the eye's macula, a small area in the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details clearly. AMD does not lead to complete blindness, but rather to the gradual loss of central vision that can interfere with everyday activities, such as the ability to see faces, read or do close work, such as cooking. The remaining peripheral vision doesn't provide the acuity for such activities.
AMD is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 2 million Americans have AMD — a number that's expected to more than double by 2050, according to government data. AMD is most common among people over age 65. The cause is unknown, but people's risk of being stricken by the condition is heavily influenced by smoking and genetics.
Doctors have been successful in slowing the advance of AMD through a dietary supplement regimen comprising vitamin C, beta-carotene and other nutrients. Injections of prescription drugs are also used to treat certain kinds of advanced AMD. However, no treatment can reverse the loss of vision.
To restore central vision in four patients with advanced AMD, doctors implanted into their eyes a device called the Argus II electronic epiretinal prosthesis. This is a new commercial product that, in earlier incarnations, has restored very limited sight to people who had only perception-of-light vision as a result of a rare, degenerative eye disease. The device is essentially a miniature camera attached to the back of the eye that captures images and sends electrical signals to the brain. [The 7 Biggest Mysteries of the Human Body]
None of the patients reported "confusion" about what they were seeing when the device was turned on. This was a concern for the researchers, because the brain was receiving a combination of natural electrical impulses from the peripheral areas of the eye as well as artificial impulses from the central implant, and they didn't know how the brain would interpret this.
Another element of success was that the implant didn't seem to cause problems in the patients' bodies; they tolerated them for up to six months, with no signs of infection.
The researchers wrote that, while previous implants have helped people with rare diseases, the latest research results may "indicate a new way of restoring central vision in one of the most common causes of severe loss of central vision in people over the age of 50, dry age-related macular degeneration … for which no other treatments are currently available."
The research team comprised doctors and engineers from the University of Manchester in England and the company that makes the implant, Second Sight Medical Products in Sylmar, California.

Missouri witness photographs triangle UFO
Missouri witness photographs triangle UFO
A Missouri witness at Richmond Heights reported watching and photographing a triangle UFO with bright lights at 11 p.m. on May 3, 2016, according to testimony in Case 76223 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness and her family had just left the St. Louis Cardinal game and were westbound along Highway 40 when the incident occurred.
“I was the first to see it,” the witness stated.“Off in the distance approximately four or five miles away in the west – southwest from our current position – I could see an extremely bright row of lights – four round, very large set of lights side-by-side.”
Cropped and enlarged version of witness Image # 2. (Credit: MUFON)
The witness thought they were stadium lights.
“I pointed it out to my husband and son. My husband said, ‘It’s just lights on top of a building or crane, no big deal.’ As we got closer to it we realized there were no buildings or cranes around. All highway and some trees.”
Cropped and enlarged version of witness Image # 3. (Credit: MUFON)
The witness described the light and its location.
“The lights were straight forward like headlights. It seemed like it was in the same spot from when I first spotted it. We got onto the off ramp from Highway 40 and were going to head south on Highway 270. As soon as we got onto Highway 270 my husband pulled to the shoulder so I could try and get some better pictures of this ‘floating light tower.’”

The witness first thought the object was hovering.
“It seemed like it was less than a quarter of a mile to the right of us at that point. Since we were stopped and now looking up at this thing we realized it was moving really super slow instead of hanging out in midair like we originally thought. We could now see its triangular shape and the lights were not as I described above, but rather, two in front toward the outer tip of the wings and two toward the top center. And what looked like rope lighting around the outer perimeter.”
The witness continued to watch the object and its odd lighting.
“The lights definitely seemed to dim down as it was passing over us. My husband said there were a set of colored blinking lights on the underside, but I honestly didn’t notice them. It was bigger than our truck – an extended cab Silverado – and made absolutely no sound – the whole time. That was the most amazing part – how something so big flying through the air could be so quiet?”
Cropped and enlarged version of witness Image # 5. (Credit: MUFON)
The witness did not feel threatened during the sighting.
“And there wasn’t a moment during this amazing experience where we felt scared or threatened in any way. It stayed a safe distance above us, about as low as a helicopter would fly when doing a traffic report. As it was passing over us it picked up a tremendous amount of speed. Almost like it noticed us watching it. I know, let’s not get crazy. Then it took off straight toward St. Louis – east – and then shot upward at an angle toward the southeast. Within seconds it was out of sight.”
Cropped and enlarged version of witness Image # 6. (Credit: MUFON)
The witness feels that there should be additional witnesses.
“Even though it was about 11p.m. on a Tuesday, there was a Blues game and Cardinal game that just let out – so the highways were far from empty. Surely we are not the only three people in STL to see this thing. I sent a Tweet to Fox2now (local news) like I always do when I have something ‘odd’ or weather related to share. And I still have not heard a response from them.”
Missouri MUFON Chief Investigator Joe Palermo is investigating. Richmond Heights a city in St. Louis County, population 8,603. Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.
Massive Alien Entity Floating Over Mexico Proves Aliens are Already Here
Massive Alien Entity Floating Over Mexico Proves Aliens are Already Here
A video showing a UFO of considerable proportions that strongly resembles a living creature has recently surfaced. Could this prove the UFO phenomenon is real, and even more, that otherworldly creatures reside on the Earth?
The sky is full of mysterious sightings, and although most of them can be given a rational explanation, there are some that seem to defy all logic. It’s true that even the unexplained can be interpreted as being nothing more than a common appearance, but thinking beyond that will offer relevant clues defining our world.
While Earth may be home to various undiscovered (or undocumented) alien lifeforms, there will always be skeptics trying to alter this perception by ridiculing the unusual, making it look like something childish or pathetic. This however is understandable, considering that cgi today can easily imitate reality, thus veiling an authentic and mystic phenomenon in a shroud of disbelief.
Such is the case of Zeroids – one of the first lifeforms to arrive and develop in space. These alien entities are capable of surviving in zero atmospheric pressure conditions from space, and are also known to reside on our planet. It may sound impossible, but alien entities are already among us, and there are numerous videos capturing their unusual behavior.
They float at extremely high altitudes, and are usually observed using a telescope. While some sightings are only visible in full light spectrum, these zeroids can be seen with the naked eye. These fascinating alien creatures are poorly documented, although many researchers know and even acknowledge their existence.
In 2012, Dr. Franklin Ruehl, an American ufologist and cryptozoologist with a Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics from UCLA, shared his opinions about zeroids in an article for The Huffington Post.
Considering that our island universe is approximately 13.7 billion years old, it is conceivable that zeroids represent the earliest forms in the cosmic backdrop, perhaps even existing for nearly that entire time,” he wrote. “With such an elonged span of time at their disposal, zeroids could easily have trod many different evolutionary paths: They may range in dimensionality from the microscopic to the macroscopic.
According to Dr. Ruehl, these ancient, organic beings could be found throughout the entire universe and have adapted to different conditions of life. He suggests that such creatures can vary from the “utterly simple to the extraordinary complex,” they take various shapes and sizes and can have a solitary life, as well as live inside vast colonies. He also speculates that the “larger zeroidal entities might possibly feast upon smaller ones,” theory that’s similar to what we call the “food chain” here on earth, but on a universal scale.
On May 3, 2016, a video has surfaced revealing an impressive zeroid sighting floating above Guadalajara, Mexico. It strongly resembles a blue whale, but from another dimension, and it may also prove that Ruehl’s theory regarding smaller zeroids being assimilated or eaten by the bigger ones is true. On a cosmic level, this could be a variation of the food chain defined by our earthly standards.
Scott Waring from ufosightingsdaily who shared this find with the UFO community expressed his excitement on his blog:
It’s not often you get to see a UFO that moves like a living, breathing animal, but this is one of those. Watch as it almost swims through the sky. Such creatures do exist in space and have been recorded on live cam, but to see them in our sky, that’s even rarer.
Since these otherworldly creatures remain mostly undocumented, we can only speculate on certain aspects such as their intelligence level and composition, but their presence on this planet and throughout space is a well-known thing.
While some believe them to be nothing more than weather balloons, or elaborated jokes meant to distract us from the real green men and artificial crafts, I consider them to be part of the various, mind-boggling UFO phenomenon. The truth is out there, and before searching beyond our earthly boundaries, we should meticulously analyze our own planet, as it may hold the key to universal knowledge.
US General Warns of Little Green Men and Hybrid Armies in the Near Future
US General Warns of Little Green Men and Hybrid Armies in the Near Future
There’s a chance that 2016 will be the great year of disclosure. A recent statement of a renowned military figure pointed out at a possible alien contact this year.
An unprecedented race to find alien lifeforms outside of our planet has recently began. Declassified files from different institutions have shown that UFOs are an actual phenomenon that has been kept at bay for many years. Prominent figures from across the world are now slowly preparing the world for UFO disclosure. The moment seems right with all the massive shift in technology, but are we going to be satisfied upon learning the truth?
A recent episode of such sort has as its protagonist an important American figure. General Mark A. Milley, the 39th Chief of Staff of the U.S Army, has warned the world about the upcoming events that are about to change the world as we know it. A few decades back, such a statement would had been considered a fantasy point of view to say the least, but recent years have shown that even the impossible can be achieved if we only desire badly enough.
General Milley spilled the beans about a certain topic that has been considered taboo for countless years – aliens and the UFO phenomenon, which in his acceptance appears to be extremely real. In a press conference he let the following information slip away:
“I can tell you that, from personal experience, and I know there’s many others who could tell you that as well…you’ll be dealing with terrorists, you’ll be dealing with hybrid armies, you’ll be dealing with little green men…and you’ll going to be dealing with it all, and it’s all going to be dealt with simultaneously. For that, you’re going to have to be ready. That’s why readiness, in my mind, is number one.”
This is a direct warning signal for the American people, and also the world. An imposing figure from the U.S. army has once again revealed what the future holds in store for us. The icing on the cake is probably the direct reference to the “little green men” that, according to the general, will make their presence noticed in the near future.
But why does he speak of aliens as a threat? Is it possible that the world governments have been provoking these otherworldly beings to reveal themselves to the world? Do they really know of their existence?
After thoroughly analyzing this statement, along with many other facts noticed throughout the years, an unusual scenario loomed into my mind. What if the U.S. government did have a secret pact with these otherworldly visitors, and are now planning to end it because our earthly technology has reached a considerable level?
If so, it’s possible that the U.S. has borrowed their knowledge in exchange for certain things such as free abduction and exchange programs, green light to monitor our species, and even free access to walk among us. All of these were possible through a silence treaty that is about to be broken.
This would explain why NASA has bombed the moon in 2009, and why we haven’t returned there for so long. A substantial goal for humanity has been to walk and eventually set camp on Earth’s natural satellite. However, we’ve briskly renounced our dream soon after achieving the first step. Were the alien outposts discovered there the main reason for this? Numerous photos that were made public by various governmental institutions show plenty of unidentified objects found in the vicinity of our landers and orbiters, but also structures resembling mining facilities.
If this is the case, it’s possible that the alien treaty has been (or soon will be) violated by our earthly rulers. The outcome can only be interpreted for the time being, but the future doesn’t look so bright for the regular humans.
Whatever the case, we can only wait for the final disclosure event. The warning has been launched, and we may have a few more years to prepare for the future, so if you haven’t built a bunker yet, you may need to reconsider your list of priorities. Search no longer for the truth, as it has apparently been here for decades.
The Black Knight is a mysterious ship that orbits around the Earth before the modern Space Age. Its origin, as well as its function, is unknown but different images of this object exist. The images have been taken by NASA.
In the following video we show you a long and comprehensive investigation to reconstruct, with the little available information of the object.
Even though the investigation is in the Spanish language, the images speak for themselves.
20 facts about the Black Knight satellite
According to monitoring agencies around the world, The Black knight satellite has been transmitting radio signals for over 50 years now.
The US and Soviet Union have shown particular interest in this “unidentified space object”
Rumors are that it was Nikola Tesla the first man to “intercept” a signal from the black knight satellite in 1899 after building a high-voltage radio device in Colorado Springs.
Since the 1930′s Astronomers worldwide have been reporting strange radio signals which allegedly come from the “Black Knight”.
In 1957, Dr. Luis Corralos of the Communications Ministry in Venezuela photographed it while taking pictures of Sputnik II as it passed over Caracas.
The story of the Black Knight made its media debut in the 1940′s when the St. Louis Dispatch and The San Francisco Examiner wrote about the “Satellite” on May 14th 1954.
The Time Magazine wrote about the Black Knight Satellite on the seventh of March, 1960.
In 1957, an unknown “object” was seen “shadowing” the Sputnik 1 Spacecraft. According to reports, the “unidentified object” was in Polar orbit.
In 1957. The United States nor the Russians possessed the technology to maintain a spacecraft in Polar Orbit.
The first Polar orbiting satellite was launched in 1960.
Polar orbits are often used for earth-mapping, earth observation, capturing the earth as time passes from one point and reconnaissance satellites. This would put the Black Knight in the category of an observational Satellite.
In the 1960′s the Black Knight satellite was located once again in Polar Orbit. Astronomers and Scientists calculated the object’s weight to be over 10 tons which would be at that time the Heaviest Artificial Satellite to orbit our Planet.
The Black Knight’s orbit was unlike any other object orbiting Earth.
The Grumman Aircraft Corporation gave much importance to this mysterious “Satellite”, On September 3, 1960, seven months after the satellite was first detected by radar, a tracking camera at Grumman Aircraft Corporation’s Long Island factory took a photograph of the Black Knight satellite.
The Grumman Aircraft Corporation formed a committee to study the data received from the observations made but nothing was made public.
In 1963, Gordon Cooper was launched into space. On his last orbit, he reported seeing a glowing green object in front of his capsule in the distance moving towards his Spacecraft. The Muchea tracking station, in Australia, which Cooper reported the object to, picked up this Unidentified object on Radar travelling East to West.
It was the Ham Radio operator who apparently decoded a series of signals received from the UFO Satellite and interpreted it as a star-chart centered on the Epsilon Bootes Star System.
According to the decoded message, the Black Knight satellite originated from the Epsilon Bootes Star System 13.000 years ago.
On August 23, 1954 the technology magazine Aviation Week and Space Technology released a story about the Black Knight Satellite that angered the Pentagon who were trying to keep the information secret.
NASA has released official images which apparently show the Black Knight Satellite.
Scientists suspect that chunks from the bottom of the North American tectonic plate, which is the upper portion of the mantle, are peeling off and sinking. Replacing the resulting void is gooey material from the asthenosphere.

An odd phenomenon may explain why the Southeastern United States has experienced recent earthquakes, even though the region sits snugly in the middle of a tectonic plate and not at the edges, where all the ground-shaking action usually happens.
This seismicity — or relatively frequent earthquakes — may be the result of areas along the bottom of the North American tectonic plate peeling off, the researchers said. And this peeling motion is likely to continue, leading to more earthquakes in the future, like the 2011 magnitude-5.8 temblor that shook the nation's capital. [Image Gallery: This Millennium's Destructive Earthquakes]
To figure out the cause of these earthquakes, Berk Biryol, a seismologist at UNC Chapel Hill, and colleagues created 3D images of the uppermost part of Earth's mantle, which is just below the crust and comprises the bottom of a tectonic plate. These tectonic plates scoot around atop a layer of warm, viscous fluid called the asthenosphere.
The resulting X-ray images revealed that the plate's thickness in the southeast United States was uneven, with thick regions of dense, old rock combined with thinner areas composed of younger rocks that were also less dense.
The ground-shaking from the magnitude-5.8 earthquake near Mineral, Virginia, on Aug. 23, 2011, was felt by more people than any other earthquake in U.S. history, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Here's what the researchers think caused the wonkiness: Over time, as new material was added to the plate and parts of the plate were pulled apart, areas of higher density formed. Gravity would have pulled down the denser areas into the mantle, and at some point chunks would have broken off to sink into the gooey asthenosphere below, the researchers speculated.
At the same time, to fill the void left by the chunks peeling off from the bottom of the plate, the lighter material in the asthenosphere would have moved up to fill in the space. That buoyant material then would have cooled to become the thinner, younger section of the plate.
Where parts of the plate broke off or peeled, it became thinner and more prone to slip along fault lines, thus causing seismic activity. Biryol estimates that this activity has occurred for the past 65 million years or so.
"These events, usually, when they occur, they occur over long periods of time. The geological time scale is millions of years," Biryol said.
While the research looks only at what has occurred in the past, and not what seismic activity there may be in the future, Biryol said people living in the Southeast don't need earthquake preparedness kits just yet.
"I don't think things will be changing in the future, at least not in our lifetimes or our grandchildren's grandchildren's life," Biryol told Live Science. "Geological processes take place over long periods of time and nothing will change dramatically overnight."
Stunning Cloud Maps Tell the Story of Life on Earth
Stunning Cloud Maps Tell the Story of Life on Earth

Clouds might seem like a nuisance if you’re headed on a Sunday afternoon picnic. But put aside your personal biases for a second and consider this: clouds can also tell the story of life on earth.
That story has become a lot clearer thanks to new maps created by scientists that document a global year in the clouds in more intimate detail than ever before. The maps — a cloud atlas if you will — provide a fine-grained view of how clouds move around in our atmosphere and represent an important link between climate and ecological research. They’re also pretty easy on the eyes.
It turns out, England is indeed cloudy for most of the year while most of the Bay Area’s clouds show up in February. Adam Wilson, a researcher at the University of Buffalo who helped create the cloud atlas, joked that you could use the maps to settle bets between friends on who lives in the cloudiest place.
But beyond bets and bragging rights, Wilson said the maps also provide a tool for tracking life around the planet. It turns out that the different biomes of the world from deserts to mountains to cloud forests all have their own special patterns of clouds, patterns that can be instrumental to studying the patterns of life itself.
"I wasn’t expecting the signal of the biomes would stand out so stark globally," Wilson said. "The Mediterranean, southwest Africa, Australia, they all pop out as a totally different. That’s not scientifically amazing but seeing it for the first time in a map was just striking."

There have been other efforts to get fine-grained cloud data in the past, but they’ve been marred by being limited to the tropics or getting false positives of clouds in snowy areas. Wilson and colleagues at Yale created a new analysis of satellite data captured at a 1-kilometer resolution by NASA everyday for the past 15 years to shine a light on the cloudy skies.
The new data analysis helps bridge an big divide between the climate and ecology communities. Ecologists track plants and animals across the planet at very fine scale, sometimes looking at a few square feet of soil, but climate science often provides data at a much larger spatial scale. With the new dataset, ecologists' understanding of the climate factors that affect life has vastly expanded.
And because it’s satellite data, the majority of the globe is covered including places that might be lacking on-the-ground measurements like rainforests and deserts in developing countries. Those areas are also home to a number of threatened and endangered species that will face growing pressure from climate change.
“Having the best possible environmental data will lead to best species model distribution approach,” he said, noting that that modeling could in turn help inform management decisions.

Species distribution modeling incorporates a whole host of environmental data from climate to the type of soil on the ground to get a better view of where individual plants and animals live. Wilson and his colleagues recently authored a study that plugged the new cloud data into a model for two species and found it helped improved their range estimates.
“One thing that’s been a disconnect between the climate community and the ecological community is this gap in spatial resolution,” he said. “Using remote sensing like we’ve done that’s capable of directly observing cloud cover is how we can get down to fine spatial resolution.”
Climate change is expected to put more stress on plants and animals. That means decisions on how to manage them, what areas to conserve and whether and where to relocate threatened species will take on ever greater importance. The new data could help answer some of those pressing questions.
Because the data is publicly available, users beyond the ecological realm can also play around with it. Wilson told Vox there could be a whole host of applications in the solar industry, which perhaps not surprisingly has a lot invested in the sunny side equation.

Bolivia: Remembering the Tarija UFO Crash (6 May 1978)
38 Years Since Mysterious Object Fell at the Border An unidentified flying object fell to the ground at the border between Bolivia and Argentina. Eyewitnesses remember that moment. According to their stories, NASA was involved.
38 years after a metallic and incandescent object fell at the border between Bolivia and Argentina, there are enduring mysteries about what took place on May 6, 1978.
Elias Vacaflor, a witness to the events 38 years ago, says that NASA was on the scene and did not say a word about what was taken away after the UFO crash. According to the former congressman, letters were sent to the government - both to the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Relations, without replies having ever been received. They only agreed that it was a "subject that did not give rise to any concerns."
"I remember that the sky lit up in an unusual way due to the flying of an object resembling a cylinder flying for Northwest to Southeast," says Vacaflor.
Residents of Mecoya, Mecoyita, Sidras, La Merced and other communities surrounding the crash area also witnessed the object and heard the subsequent explosion. Residents of Argentina, the neighboring country, also felt it, and the press offered information on the extraordinary event. The Clarín newspaper ran the headline "UFO Found on the Border Between Argentina and Bolivia."
Journalist Juan Antonio Abarzúa, who worked for El Tribuno de Saltaat the time, said that NASA helicopters arrived at the crash site.
Abarzúa, who formed part of that newspaper's visit to the scene, coincided with another team headed by physicist Orlando Bravo. He says that upon reaching the crash site, they found a scene of total destruction: a mountain - Cerro El Salle - had been destroyed, leaving a furrowed crater measuring 1,500 meters long, 800 meters wide and 50 meters deep (4920 ft. x 2600 ft. x 160 ft.).
Residents of Mecoya had already told them that the "gringos had taken away" the remains of whatever had fallen there.

Whether we visualize aliens as ray gun-toting invaders or peace-loving geniuses, we are fascinated by whether they exist and how they might finally contact us. It seems that scientists are no different.
From alien megastructures to space tractors, here are some of the more bizarre ways scientists have theorized that aliens are likely to contact humans.
10. The Megastructure
The mysterious monolith in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey turned out to be an alien machine designed to observe species and trigger evolutionary behaviors. Some scientists have argued that alien megastructures could be acting as a giant beacon to other civilizations.
In fact, scientists have been closely watching the star KIC 8462852, whose luminescence has mysteriously varied over the past few years. Some argue that the star is surrounded by an alien megastructure that occasionally blocks light coming from the star. Other, less exciting explanations are a swarm of exoplanets or a planet-forming disc. Scientists have searched for brief laser pulses from the distant star, but have yet to find any.
“The hypothesis of an alien megastructure around KIC 8462852 is rapidly crumbling apart,” said Douglas Vakoch, president and author of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) International. He also stated, “We found no evidence of an advanced civilization beaming intentional laser signals toward Earth.”
9. Flashing A Billion Stars
Astrophysicist Ragbir Bhathal works with SETI to scan the skies for possible communications from extraterrestrial intelligence. Unlike most SETI facilities, which look for radio signals, Bhathal’s facility looks for laser pulses at his lab. The pulses sweep a nearby volume of space—within about 100 light-years—to find laser bursts that come in regular patterns. Scientists are now capable of detecting signals as faint as a single photon of light every few fractions of a second.
Lasers can, in principle, help transmit messages over extraordinary distances. While scientists have monitored a large number of stars looking for alien laser signals—like the facilities at Harvard and Princeton that scanned more than 10,000 Sun-like stars for several years—no evidence for any alien communication has been found.
8. Alien Probes
Perhaps alien signals aren’t traveling in electromagnetic waves at all. Instead, signs of intelligent life may be very small objects sent out to explore the universe. After all, we have sent out probes to planets such Mars, Saturn, and Venus. Mathematicians in Scotland have suggested that “self-replicating” alien probes could have already explored our solar system andmay still be here, but are undetectable to our inferior technologies.
The robotic probes could explore our galaxy and self-replicate themselves from interstellar dust and gas. Afterward, the parent and child probes would each set off for a different star, where they would look for signs of life and self-replicate themselves again. Doctors Nicholson and Forgan concluded that a fleet of these probes could explore the entire galaxy in the relatively short time of 10 million years.
Dr. Forgan said that the fact that we have not detected or seen any evidence of alien probes in the solar system suggests either that there have been no probe-building civilizations in our neighborhood in a few million years or that the probes are so hi-tech we are unable to observe them. Another possibility is that we are failing the aliens’ intelligence test by not detecting the probes.
7. Radio Waves From Far Away
For years, mysterious blasts of radio waves coming from billions of light-years away have stumped our scientists. Lasting only several thousandths of a second, the blasts, called fast radio bursts, have appeared randomly in the sky. Scientists haven’t been able to figure out what these blazing bright bursts actually are. Alternately, they have suggested that the culprits could be evaporating black holes, colliding dense objects, or flaring dead stars.
After studying how the incoming radio waves from a newly detected burst were twisted and scattered, a team of scientists have uncovered some crucial clues about the blast’s origin: It originated far away, in an area with dense, highly magnetized plasma, and it traveled through two gas clouds before colliding with the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia.
Now, astronomers suspect that flaring magnetars (magnetic stars) might also emit radio waves and could be the culprits behind fast radio bursts. “It’s very exciting,” says Duncan Lorimer, the astronomer at West Virginia University who discovered the first fast radio burst in 2007. “We are definitely moving further forward to solving the mystery.”
6. Junk Radiation
Not all aliens may be looking for other creatures in the universe. Theoretical physicist Freeman Dyson has argued that even shy aliens might develop technology to siphon energy from a nearby star using an orbiting object known as a Dyson sphere. If humans were to collect all of the Sun’s energy, we would probably use some form of Dyson sphere.
Freeman J. Dyson first explored this idea as a thought experiment in 1960. He proposed that searching for such structures might lead to the discovery of advanced civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy. These Dyson sphereswould throw off waste heat in the form of infrared radiation. Already, researchers at the Allen Telescope Array and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope are scouring the skies for signs of such waste radiation.
If it sounds like science fiction, Dyson did admit that he borrowed it from the 1937 science fiction novel Star Maker and used it as inspiration.
5. Space Tractors
Jaron Lanier suggested that it was time to start thinking about repositioning the Sun and other nearby stars in order to send signals to aliens. After that, we should begin to search for signs that suggest aliens might have done the same for us.
In fact, when neutron stars were discovered, scientists thought they might be messages from “little green men.” Lanier suggested sending a significant number of “tractor” spacecrafts over many years into the outer solar system. The spacecraft would be programmed to operate for hundreds of thousands of years, with their gravitational pull diverting solar objects.
The point of moving stars around is to guide them into orbital formations that would not have occurred naturally. A group of stars organized to present a sign in this way might be called a “graphstellation”—like a constellation, but also a form of writing. This message would say “Hey, we are here.”
4. Needle In A Haystack
Even if aliens are trying to make contact, there’s no guarantee we would receive their messages. The universe is 91 billion light-years across, and messages could come from anywhere. To narrow the search, some argue that aliens would be more likely to send messages our way if they knew where we were. A study published in February 2016 found that there are only 82 stars that we know of that have a direct line of sight to Earth.
Heller and his colleague, Ralph Pudritz at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, predicted that there might be up to 100,000 stars within this zone of the sky—some of which could have planets teeming with life orbiting them. One advantage of this approach is that this tiny slice of sky is relatively easy to search.
“You could just skim or scan the whole Earth transit zone over the course of maybe a few dozen nights or so, depending on how large the field of view of your radio telescope is,” Heller told Live Science. If these hidden exoplanets harbor life, they’d also be in the same galactic neighborhood . . . just a few hundred light-years away.
3. Destruction Of An Alien Planet
One of the ways we may be able to spot alien civilizations is through the destruction of their own planet, says Dr. Nathalie Cabrol, who is leading the hunt for alien life at the SETI Institute in California. “There is a window in time when you can expect a civilization to get to this disequilibrium as we are in now. During this time, you will find signatures in the atmosphere of a planet that shouldn’t be there.”
Cabrol’s views echo that of the former astronaut, John Grunsfeld, who earlier this year said, “If there is life out there, intelligent life, they’ll know we’re here.” He believes advanced alien civilizations may spot humans from afar due to the changes we’ve made to Earth’s environment. At the Astrobiology Science Conference in Chicago, he stated, “We put out atmospheric signatures that guarantee someone with a large telescope 20 light-years away could detect us.”
2. Wait A Few Billion Years
Researchers from NASA’s Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) used observations from telescopes, like the Hubble and Kepler, to calculate that Earth is only in the first 8 percent of all Earth-like planets that will ever form. The other 92 percent of Earth-like planets haven’t even been formed yet. Author Peter Behroozi said, “Compared to all the planets that will ever form in the universe, the Earth is actually quite early.”
Because it is so early, the researchers think it is highly unlikely that ours is the only planet that will ever develop intelligent life. In the paper, Behroozi and his co-author, Molly Peeples, wrote, “The Earth formed before 92 percent of similar planets that the universe will form. This implies an 8 percent chance that we are the only civilization the universe will ever have.” Those are pretty good odds to say that we aren’t alone. We might just need to wait a few billion years to make sure.
1. Find A Clone Of Our Sun
What if we could find a star that’s similar in temperature, size, and chemical composition to our Sun? Our Earth relies on the Sun’s energy to fuel life by using photosynthesis. If we could find a star that matches our Sun, then maybe there could also be a twin solar system.
In 2012, astronomers discovered HP 56948, the Sun’s “clone,” only 200 light-years away. The chemical composition of HP 56548 has unusual amounts of aluminum, calcium, magnesium, and silicon—the same ratio as our Sun. However, the system may not have an Earth-sized planet in its habitable zone. Even if there is one, it may not have the right chemical ingredients for life, such as water and carbon. And, even if there is a flourishing world with life forms, it may not have progressed to an intelligent species.
If it takes four billion years for intelligent beings to emerge, and if there is an Earth-like planet, then a civilization should be orbiting HP 56548 right now.

A long time ago in a Welsh aircraft hangar far away: Never-before-seen images reveal secret 1979 project to construct Star Wars' Millennium Falcon for classic films
The only full-scale model of Han Solo's Millennium Falcon spaceship was built in a Welsh hangar in 1979
The life-size version of the spaceship was constructed for The Empire Strikes Back, the second film in the series
Workers at Pembroke Dock were sworn to secrecy over the project and it was nicknamed the 'Magic Roundabout'
The secret of how the legendary Star Wars spaceship the Millennium Falcon was built has been revealed - in a high-security project codenamed 'Magic Roundabout' in the Welsh countryside.
The only full-size model of Han Solo's iconic craft was constructed at an aircraft hangar in Pembroke Dock, west Wales, where workers were sworn to silence over what they were making.
Newly released photographs show dozens of joiners, welders and metal-platers at work during the three months they spent putting together the giant freighter flown by Harrison Ford in the famous science fiction series.

Engineering foreman John Clark and two friends are pictured beside the life-size Millennium Falcon model in a newly released photo of the project
The distinctive shape of the Millennium Falcon is clearly recognisable in the second photo taken by Mr Clark
A group of workers go over the plans for the massive spaceship during its construction at Pembroke Dock
It was built inside an aircraft hangar with workers involved in the project sworn to secrecy
The huge prop was made inside an aircraft hangar which had been home to the Sunderland flying boats during the Second World War.
The giant steel doors were kept shut from morning until night to hide the construction - there were no unauthorised visits, photographs were banned and the workers were sworn to secrecy.
But one amateur photographer managed to get a snap of the 'fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy' as it was nearing completion.
The never before seen picture shows how the Millennium Falcon earned its wings in the town of Pembroke Dock.
John Evans, a historian in the town, said: 'Star Wars has a global following and this is yet another great reason for tourists to come here.
'Pembroke Dock is a military town and we have people coming from far and wide to follow family footsteps, be it Navy, Army or Air Force.
'But there is also this incredible link to Star Wars which is almost a cult thing and a 21st century concept.
'People can still see the very building where the Millennium Falcon was made.'
The photograph was taken by local man John Clark, a foreman with Marcon Fabrications, a heavy engineering firm that serviced the UK's petrochemical and oil industries.
Work on the model (pictured) finished in 1979 and it was transported to film studios in Hertfordshire
Mr Clark recalled: 'One of the directors was in cahoots with someone with the studios or someone associated with the Star Wars films.
'I was very surprised that we'd gone that type of work because we built stuff for the oil industry and the offshore industry, but we got the contract. It was just a reasonable size team of workers that built all the framework.
'I was foreman on the job at the time. When we built it - as you can see on the photographs - we had it on hover pads on the legs so that it could be moved as though it was going to take off and so forth.
'We tried to keep it as much a secret as possible because you didn't want everybody prying and coming round the hangar, but it got out. People were prying and trying to see what was going on but half of them didn't believe it, saying: "Building a spaceship? That's rubbish".'
He said the Millennium Falcon was then disassembled into pieces so it could be transported to the studios in Hertfordshire.
'The artists in the film industry, the craftsman, went to work on it and made it into what you see on The Empire Strikes Back.'
This rare photograph was taken during the top-secret project which was codenamed Magic Roundabout
Work on the spaceship finished in 1979 and the prop was then transported to Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire
The company had been asked by filmmakers to build a life-sized, moving prop for key scenes in the second Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back.
And Mr Clark used his pocket-sized 110 camera to get a colour photograph of himself and two friends standing next to the Millennium Falcon.
Work on the spaceship finished shortly after the picture was taken in 1979 and the prop was transported to Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire.
The film was released in 1980 and was a box office smash around the world. This was followed up by the third film in the trilogy, 1983's Return of the Jedi.
A permanent exhibition of Star Wars photographs, artefacts and memorabilia is being opened to celebrate Pembroke Dock's links with the iconic movie franchise.
Mr Evans added: 'This has been a huge thing for us.
'This is great for tourism and a very unique claim to fame for Pembroke Dock.'

THE MILLENNIUM FALCON: HAN SOLO AND CHEWBACCA'S LIGHT FREIGHTER
Han Solo's much-loved Millennium Falcon (pictured) has taken a unique place in pop culture
In the 38 years since it first appeared on the big screen, the space ship piloted by Han Solo and his Wookiee assistant Chewbacca in the original Star Wars series has become an easily recognizable piece of pop culture.
Armed with laser cannons and the famed 'hyperdrive' technology, it featured in the first movie A New Hope and went on to become a regular setting throughout the series.
Such is the high esteem in which fans hold it, the exact specifications of the model, its weaponry, shielding systems and engines have all been meticulously documented.
The ship is technically a light freighter measuring 111ft in length by 82ft wide. While it is rounded and flat in shape, it measures 26ft high - inclusive of the attached exterior weaponry.
Its maximum speed is 1,050kmph. But this is vastly surpassed when it goes into 'hyperdrive' - a mode illustrated in the films when the stars surrounding it appear stretched or blurred as it travels through light years within the space of hours.
The ship is powered by five different engines - primarily a 'Quadrex power core' and four backup or emergency generators.
Its main weapons are 2G Quad Laster cannons and a hidden ground-defence blaster cannon, though many other improvised weapons make brief appearances in the films.
Capable of carrying six passengers, it is crewed by two people - those usually being Han Solo or Chewbacca - with provisions for two others to man guns during space battles.
The ship was piloted by Harrison Ford's character Han Solo (right). Here he pictured next to Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia and Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker
