Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

Een hooggeplaatste Roemeense generaal die eveneens optreedt als adviseur van de overheid aangaande vreemde en niet verklaarbare zaken, vertelt een bijzonder opmerkelijk verhaal.
Over een ontmoeting met twee buitenaardse reptielen op een ochtend vroeg bij een benzinepomp in de buurt van Boekarest.
Generaal Emil Strainu is een inmiddels gepensioneerde generaal uit het Roemeense leger die tijdens zijn actieve loopbaan hooggeplaatste functies vervulde.
Ook nu is hij nog heel actief en onder meer adviseur van de overheid op het gebied van onconventionele zaken en wat men noemt asymmetrische bedreigingen. Daarnaast is hij directeur van een onderzoekscentrum wat zich bezig houdt met UFO’s en oprichter van een vereniging voor onderzoek naar niet geïdentificeerde gebeurtenissen in het luchtruim en de ruimte.
Strainu heeft altijd gezegd dat (buiten)aardse reptielen bestaan en dat ze grote ondergrondse bases en steden op onze aarde hebben. Dat is echter alles wat hij over het onderwerp kwijt wil, want iedere keer zegt hij: “Meer dan dit ga ik niet zeggen over dit onderwerp”.
Nadat Strainu enkele boeken had gelezen van Aryan Hava nam hij contact op met haar om haar een uitzonderlijk verhaal te vertellen. De twee boeken die Strainu van haar had gelezen waren “Inuaki, the reptilian inside me” (deel 1 en 2). Toen Strainu contact op nam met haar stond ze op het punt haar derde boek uit te brengen, getiteld “Anunnaki vs Anunnaki”.
Het volgende verhaal van Strainu verscheen als voorwoord in dit derde boek:
Het verhaal dat Strainu vertelt, gaat over een goede vriend van hem die op een vroege ochtend twee buitenaardse reptielen zag in de Retezatbergen, een onderdeel van de Karpaten.
Zijn vriend is eveneens een hooggeplaatste legerofficier die we kolonel X zullen noemen. Deze kolonel reed op een ochtend terug van een korte kampeertrip die hij had gemaakt alleen in de bergen. Hij was op de terugweg naar Boekarest toen hij op de benzinemeter zag dat hij moest tanken.
Hij stopte bij een klein benzinestation op het platteland rond een uur of vijf in de ochtend. Er was dan ook helemaal niemand. Wel zag hij dat er een kaki gekleurde Hummer met geblindeerde ramen stond met draaiende motor, maar er was niemand te zien.
Het was een benzinestation waar je zelf kon tanken met je bankpas, dus nadat hij zijn tank had gevuld, liep hij terug naar zijn auto. Hij zag dat de deur aan de bestuurderskant van de Hummer openstond en binnenin de auto zag hij een reptielachtig wezen.
Het Reptiel had geen kleren aan, maar droeg militaire laarzen. Het was, net zoals een krokodil, helemaal bedekt met schubben en had een soort kam op zijn hoofd zoals een hagedis.
Het reptiel zag kolonel X en stapte uit de auto terwijl hij de kolonel strak aankeek. Hij gaf wat instructies aan iemand in de auto en keek daarbij nogal geïrriteerd. Toen stapte hij weer snel achter het stuur en reed weg. De auto had geen nummerbord aan de voor- of achterkant.
De kolonel schat het reptiel ongeveer op twee meter groot met gele kattenogen en eveneens eenzelfde soort pupil als een kat.
De kolonel keek om zich heen of er anderen waren die dit ook hadden gezien, maar hij was helemaal alleen. Toen zag hij de bewakingscamera bij het benzinestation.
Toen hij later de eigenaar te pakken kreeg, vertelde deze hem dat die camera er alleen zat voor decoratie, maar het niet deed.
De kolonel vervolgde tenslotte zijn weg richting Boekarest.
Een aantal kilometers verderop zag hij dezelfde Hummer langs de kant van de weg met alle vier de deuren geopend. Buiten de auto zag hij twee reptielen die met elkaar leken te bekvechten.
Het tweede reptiel was nog eens 20 centimeter groter dan de eerste. Deze droeg ook geen kleren, maar ook geen laarzen. Hij had hagedisachtige voeten en had in tegenstelling tot het eerste reptiel een staart.
Ondertussen reden er van beide kanten vrachtwagens voorbij en hij zag dat chauffeurs keken en wezen naar de reptielen, maar wel doorreden. De kolonel pakte zijn mobiel en maakte foto’s van de reptielen die hier weinig bezwaar tegen leken te hebben.
Na een paar minuten stapten de reptielen weer in de auto en reden met hoge snelheid terug in de richting waar ze vandaan waren gekomen. De kolonel nam snel nog enkele foto’s en reed toen verder richting Boekarest, waar hij onmiddellijk contact op nam met generaal Strainu.
Eenmaal terug in Boekarest keek hij samen met Strainu naar de mobiele telefoon waarop stond dat er elf foto’s waren genomen. Echter, alle elf beelden waren volledig groen. Ze namen contact op met de fabrikant van de telefoon, maar daar werden ze ook niet veel wijzer van. Het was alsof de kolonel een foto had genomen van een groen licht. Mogelijk de reden dat de reptielen niet zo bezorgd waren over de foto's die de man aan het nemen was van ze.
Ze zijn twee weken daarna bezig geweest met onderzoek en hebben ook geprobeerd andere getuigen te vinden. Helaas, alles tevergeefs.
De generaal concludeert aan het eind:
“Eén ding is zeker en dat is dat wij in een wereld leven waarvan wij denken dat we die kennen. We denken abusievelijk dat wij de meesters zijn in die wereld. We zijn in feite niets anders dan onderhuurders in transit op een planeet die nooit van ons is geweest en we hebben geen flauw idee wat ons werkelijke doel is”.

Jarnel Singh was walking home through Balby when he caught sight of the beautiful sunset. He took a number of pictures on his mobile phone to show to other people. But when he got home and showed his wife, he noticed a mysterious shape on the picture which he had not initially noticed - and now believes to be an unidentified flying object. He said: “I was just walking along Balby Road, and passing Westfield Park, when I thought how beautiful the sky looked. “It looked so nice that I thought I would take a photograph. I took one, took another a bit further along the road, and then took another one after that. “I went home, and I showed the pictures to my wife. She enlarged the photo, and she saw a dot there. I checked the other two, and it wasn’t on them. “It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane - I don’t know what it is.
There was something there I just can’t explain, and that I don’t recognise. “It is something out of the ordinary - I think that it’s a UFO. “It was silent, whatever it was, as I didn’t hear anything. “There may be life on other planets, I don’t know. “I’m open minded about UFOs - I suppose there is always the possibility. “But I do think I have seen something out of the ordinary. Dying Stars May Transform Frozen Worlds Into Havens for Life

When most stars reach old age and begin to run out fuel, they swell up to hundreds of times their normal size, engulfing planets that orbit too close. But can planets that escape this fiery demise still support life? In this state, can planets around the dying star host life? New research says yes.
In about 7.5 billion years, the sun will have begun its march to the grave and will start expanding. Eventually it will swell to about 200 times its current size. It will swallow Mercury and Venus, and make Earth uninhabitable. But currently frigid locations in the solar system, like the icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter, might become just the right temperature for life.
Many stars in the universe become red giants, and some can remain that way for billions of years. The new work provides an in-depth look at how long planets can remain habitable around red giant stars — in some cases, for up to 9 billion years, which is twice Earth's current age. That's sufficiently long for life to form from scratch, or to flourish in a newer, more welcoming environment. It could also provide a lifeboat for humanity. When the sun expands into a red giant, it will overtake the current orbits of Mercury, Venus and Earth. The planets will move away from the star as it expands, allowing Earth to just barely escape being engulfed.

Crazy hot
Earth currently sits in the "habitable zone" of the sun — the distance at which the planet is warm enough to have liquid water on its surface, but not so hot that the water evaporates. (Liquid water is a requirement for all life on Earth, although the universe could very well serve up exceptions to this). This "just right" spot around a star is also sometimes called the "Goldilocks Zone."
The habitable zone is determined by the luminosity of a star — how much total light it emits over time. When most "normal" stars run out of hydrogen fuel, they start burning helium instead. Helium is a more potent fuel, and boosts the star's energy output at its core. As a result, the star swells up like bread in an oven, and becomes a "red giant."

A star's luminosity, or the total amount of light it emits in a given time, is largely responsible for defining the habitable zone. As a star swells up into a red giant, its luminosity increases. The sun's luminosity will increase by over 4,000 times when it becomes a red giant, the new research shows.
"The Earth [will become] a sizzling wasteland. The sun [will be] nearly at the Earth's orbit. It's going to be crazy hot," Lisa Kaltenegger, associate professor of astronomy and director of the Carl Sagan Institute, told Space.com. Kaltenegger is a co-author on the new research, which appears today (May 16) in the Astrophysical Journal.
But other places in the solar system will land in a less extreme temperature zone. The habitable zone of the sun will shift outward to include the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, according to the new research.

Under the thick icy layers on the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus and Jupiter's moon Europa, scientists think it's possible that life could exist in liquid water oceans. The discovery of microbial life living in extreme environments on Earth, like under layers of ice in Antarctica, have boosted this hypothesis.
The new research suggests that when the sun becomes a red giant, life on Europa and Enceladus could thaw out, and have a chance to thrive on a planet that would lie in the habitable zone, Kaltenegger said.
For a star like our sun, a planet could potentially sit in the new habitable zone for half a million years. While that might not be enough time on a distant planet, that could be enough time for life buried under the ice to emerge and evolve into something detectable by Earth-based telescopes, Kaltenegger said.
Around the most massive stars considered in the new work (those in the category "A5," which includes stars more massive than the sun, but not the most massive stars in the universe), a planet could potentially be in the "new" habitable zone for up to 200 million years. Big stars burn fast and bright, but small stars can smolder in the red giant phase for much longer. The new work shows that for small stars, a planet could sit in the red giant habitable zone for up to 9 billion years. If life can evolve on Earth in less than 4 billion years, why not on a planet around a red giant?
Kaltenegger said she and her co-author on the paper, Ramses M. Ramirez, a research associate at the Carl Sagan Institute, have submitted a second paper for publication, in which they provide a list of 23 red giant stars within 100 light-years of Earth — potential targets for planet hunters.
"I hope that this will actually spark an effort by people who look for planets, to also look at these old stars now," she said. "Because if you could find signatures of life on such an evolved planet — a de-frozen planet — that would tell you that (life) could get started subsurface, and that would be an amazing part of the story."
Earth to Be Consumed By Red Giant Star (In 5B Years)
Looking even further ahead, it could mean that humans could escape to the moons of Saturn or Jupiter when Earth becomes uninhabitable, she said.
"People keep saying, 'When our sun becomes a big hot star, then we have to move to Mars or other places.' But really for the first time, we have actually calculated where that place is and when," she said. "If you want to go planet-hopping, you'll want to know when you want to be where, and that's basically what we figured out."
The devil is in the details
This infographic illustrates how the habitable zone of a small red star will move out when the star expands into a red giant. Small stars remain in this phase of life longer than large stars, so planets in the "new" habitable zone can remain there for billions of years.

To determine where the habitable zone of a star will move to be as the star evolves into a red giant, Kaltenegger and Ramirez used models of stars and their evolution that already exist. This made it possible to compute a star's luminosity, as well as its temperature, which also influences the location of the habitable zone.
Planets that live in the habitable zone aren't necessarily habitable to life as we know it — Venus is just inside the sun's habitable zone, but its ultra-thick atmosphere traps heat on the surface and would likely make the planet uninhabitable, even inside the habitable zone. Still, looking for planets in the habitable zone is a good starting point in the search for life.
Kaltenegger and Ramirez knew that there was one variable in this entire calculation that could render the rest of the research moot — if the star, as it expands into a red giant, strips all nearby planets of their atmospheres.
"This is one of the things we didn't know," Kaltenegger said. In particular, she said the new work is the first time someone has shown whether or not rocky planets slightly less massive than the Earth and those slighty more massive than the Earth, could hold on to their atmospheres as their parent star evolves into a red giant.
Stars lose mass when they become red giants, and that mass gets blasted outward, as part of the so-called stellar wind. The new work shows that some planets will lose their atmospheres during the evolution — those located very close to the star, and those with low gravity (a planet's gravity helps it "hold on" to its atmosphere). But planets with sufficient mass, positioned a safe distance away, can maintain most of their atmosphere, Kaltenegger said.
There were other complicating factors that needed to be factored in, such as the fact that as the star loses mass, its gravitational grip on the planets is reduced. As a result, the orbit of a planet around a star will expand as the star becomes a red giant. (For this reason, the Earth will escape being engulfed by the sun, according to Kaltenegger).
Researchers have worked on the question of habitability around old stars before, but Kaltnenegger said no work has ever been done using models that can reveal details about how both the star and planets will evolve together through such a drastic change to the system.
"This is the first time where we link the model of the star to the model of the planet and see what it does," she said. "The devil is really in the details. The first stabs at it were great work because the idea got started, but it's a lot of work to do, and [Ramirez] actually hunkered down and did it."
NASA researchers discuss the best way to delve into the depths of Saturn's moon Titan in a new clip from the Science channel show "Space's Deepest Secrets."
The exclusive clip comes from the show's fourth episode, which airs Tuesday (May 17) at 10 p.m. EDT (9 p.m. CDT) on Science Channel. The episode explores liquids in the solar system and the ways researchers can learn about it — understanding the warm, wet environment of early Mars, probing the moonwide, ice-encrusted sea on Jupiter's moon Europa and more.
In the clip, exclusively released to Space.com today (May 16), researchers talk about designing a submarine to explore Titan: a moon of Saturn covered in seas of liquid methane and ethane. Without looking under those seas, the researchers said, how can we truly understand that moon?
"That first picture from anybody's submarine on the surface of a sea on another planet in our solar system changes the world," Michael Paul, director of Space Systems at Penn State University, said in the clip. "That's something that none of us have ever seen before — that's true discovery. That is why we do any of this. And that would be awesome. That first picture alone would make this entire mission worth it."
The researchers consider what they could find in those alien depths, searching for information and hoping for life — but not as we know it.

Setting foot on Mars is one thing, but extended astronaut stays on the Red Planet will require tapping the planet's resources, experts say.

NASA's quest to put boots on Mars in the 2030s is advancing, bolstered by new studies about a multifunction, next-generation Mars orbiter and the best ways to use Red Planet resources to sustain astronaut pioneers.
Last year, scientists proposed nearly 50 locations on Mars as possible places for future human landings. Those landing-zone sites contain "regions of interest" that can be reached from primary touchdown spots.
Good touchdown sites will allow crews to land safely and carry out operations; offer a wealth of interesting science activities; and provide resources that the astronauts could use. For example, any favored exploration zone should allow expeditionary crews to tap into at least 100 metric tons (110 U.S. tons) of water, NASA officials have said. With its suite of instruments and cameras — particularly the sharp-shooting High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) — NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) is being put through a request process called "HiWish" to snag new images of landing-zone candidates."NASA's Human Exploration and Operations Directorate has begun to think about where human explorers should go on Mars, and what conditions and resources, as well as what science targets, may be present," said HiRISE principal investigator Alfred McEwen, director of the Planetary Image Research Lab at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "This is a sign that they are actually thinking about sending people to Mars." "Hopefully, this new interest in Mars will include support for future robotic missions needed to answer key questions," McEwen told Space.com.
Last year, scientists identified nearly 50 prospective human landing zones on Mars — locations that are safe, scientifically promising and resource-rich.

New Mars orbiter
Indeed, many experts within and outside NASA would like the agency to launch a multifunctional, next-generation Mars orbiter, the potential benefits of which were laid out in a report published in December by the Science Analysis Group of the Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group.
NASA is considering launching a multifunctional, next-generation Mars orbiter sometime in the 2020s. Among other tasks, this spacecraft would scout out resources to help sustain human expeditionary crews.

This Mars orbiter could employ solar electric propulsion, carry advanced telecommunications gear and make use of powerful radar to scout out and better classify Martian resources for human landing parties. If approved, the spacecraft may be headed for Mars as early as 2022, NASA officials have said.
NASA has allocated funds to take some "very early preformulation" looks at a new Mars orbiter, said Steve Jurczyk, associate administrator of the Space Technology Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C. No mission is yet planned for 2022, he said, but a Mars telecommunications orbiter is under consideration, given the advanced age of some of NASA's current orbiters. (Mars Odyssey launched in 2001, for example, and MRO lifted off in 2005.)
"We use orbital assets at Mars for telecommunications relay from the surface … and they are getting a little long in the tooth," Jurczyk told Space.com.
Mission planners are thinking about adding a couple of technologies to a prospective Mars orbiter, Jurczyk said — perhaps high-power electric propulsion. Deep-space laser communications technology, which could boost bandwidth capabilities by a factor of 10 compared to standard radio-frequency hardware, might be on board as well,he added.
Pay dirt
Last month, NASA released the Mars Water In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) Planning Study, which looked into how astronauts could tap into Red Planet water.
"There's an intuitive gut-level view," said Richard Davis, assistant director for science and exploration in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters. "Human beings in general don't go where there isn't water. That intuition is actually on the mark for Mars."
One small step — with big expectations to eventually homestead the Red Planet.

Water on Mars is transformative, and not just for drinking and growing crops, many experts believe. Processing the stuff can generate breathable oxygen and propellant for Mars ascent vehicles, among other things that could aid extended human stays on the Red Planet.
Davis, who worked on the ISRU report, said new data from orbit are needed to identify Martian resources that expeditionary crews could use. But orbital information by itself is probably not enough, he added.
"In the end, you need ground-truthing by sending a lander to what you think is the human landing site to validate [resource availability]," Davis said.
Water extraction
One resource option the report ruled out is the extraction of water from the thin Martian atmosphere.
Setting up a semi-permanent Mars base will require crop growth on the planet to sustain explorers far from Earth, experts say.

The mass, power, volume and mechanical complexity of the system needed for this approach are far beyond what is practical for deployment on the Red Planet, Davis said.
"The density of the water in the Martian atmosphere is so low, it would take a massive processing system," he said. "There's no way we can get there."
Water-rich minerals on Mars look far more promising, Davis said. "They require so much less power to actually free up the water molecules," he noted.
The idea of strip-mining Mars for subsurface ice deposits was reviewed in the study but got a thumbs-down, Davis said. A better approach, including to the report's authors, involves boring a hole down through the Martian dirt, vaporizing subsurface ice, bringing it up topside as a gas and then condensing that gas into liquid.
"You make the Martian environment work for us instead of against us," Davis said. "It looks very promising."
Resource feedstock
The new study is far from the last word on finding and using indigenous Martian resources, Davis said.
"For each resource feedstock on Mars that's validated, we need to understand the technology needed, the mass of the equipment required and the power it will take," he said.
Once a semi-permanent base on Mars is established, crews would set up ISRU equipment, make sure all the kinks in the gear are smoothed out and then start harvesting resources. ISRU hardware would also operate in autonomous mode when there were no humans at the base, Davis said.
"You don't achieve sustainability on Mars overnight. You grow to it," Davis said. "This is not a technical problem. Yes, there are technical issues. But it is a belief problem. If people believe it's achievable, then it will be achievable."

“You know, there’s a new name,” Mrs. Clinton said in the March appearance. “It’s unexplained aerial phenomenon,” she said. “U.A.P. That’s the latest nomenclature.”
Known for her grasp of policy, Mrs. Clinton has spoken at length in her presidential campaign on topics as diverse as Alzheimer’s research and military tensions in the South China Sea. But it is her unusual knowledge about extraterrestrials that has struck a small but committed cohort of voters.
Mrs. Clinton has vowed that barring any threats to national security, she would open up government files on the subject, a shift from President Obama, who typically dismisses the topic as a joke. Her position has elated U.F.O. enthusiasts, who have declared Mrs. Clinton the first “E.T. candidate.”
“Hillary has embraced this issue with an absolutely unprecedented level of interest in American politics,” said Joseph G. Buchman, who has spent decades calling for government transparency about extraterrestrials.
Mrs. Clinton, a cautious candidate who often bemoans being the subject of Republican conspiracy theories, has shown surprising ease plunging into the discussion of the possibility of extraterrestrial beings.
She has said in recent interviews that as president she would release information about Area 51, the remote Air Force base in Nevada believed by some to be a secret hub where the government stores classified information about aliens and U.F.O.s.
In a radio interview last month, she said, “I want to open the files as much as we can.” Asked if she believed in U.F.O.s, Mrs. Clinton said: “I don’t know. I want to see what the information shows.” But she added, “There’s enough stories out there that I don’t think everybody is just sitting in their kitchen making them up.”
When asked about extraterrestrials in an interview with The Conway Daily Sun in New Hampshire last year, Mrs. Clinton promised to “get to the bottom of it.”
“I think we may have been” visited already, she said in the interview. “We don’t know for sure.”
While Americans typically point to issues like the economy and terrorism as top priorities for the next president, a desire for answers about aliens has inspired a passionate bloc of voters, who make their voices heard on social media.
Stephen Bassett, who lobbies the government on extraterrestrial issues, views a Clinton presidency as a chance to finally get the United States to disclose all it knows about life beyond Earth. Since November 2014, Mr. Bassett’s organization has sent roughly 2.5 million Twitter messages to presidential candidates, elected officials and the news media urging a serious discussion of the issue.
“That was a storm, and now it’s like a steady drip,” Mr. Bassett said.
The movement viewed Mrs. Clinton’s decision to correct Mr. Kimmel’s use of the term U.F.O., which some view as loaded and rooted more in science fiction than in science, as a breakthrough because it “suggested she’d been briefed by someone and is not just being flippant,” Mr. Buchman said.
In fact, Mrs. Clinton had been briefed. She was prepped by her campaign chairman, John D. Podesta, who is not only a well-respected Washington hand, having served as a top adviser to Mr. Obama and President Bill Clinton, but also a crusader for the disclosure of government information on unexplained phenomena that could prove the existence of intelligent life outside Earth.

“The time to pull back the curtain on the topic is long overdue,” Mr. Podesta wrote in his foreword for the 2010 book “UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go on the Record,” by Leslie Kean, an investigative journalist.
Mrs. Clinton’s position is not a political response to public sentiment — 63 percent of Americans do not believe in U.F.O.s, according to an Associated Press poll. But it reflects the decades of overlap between the rise to power of Bill and Hillary Clinton and popular culture’s obsession with the universe’s most mysterious questions.
In 1996, Mrs. Clinton was ridiculed after Bob Woodward reported, in his book “The Choice,” that as first lady she had held discussions with her deceased role models, Eleanor Roosevelt and Mohandas K. Gandhi. The tabloid Weekly World News dreamed up sensational headlines about Mrs. Clinton’s adopting an alien baby and having a “U.F.O. love nest.”
The Clinton presidency also coincided with the hit television series “The X-Files” and movies like “Independence Day,” which gave way to an era of fascination with the existence of aliens and the possibility of a government cover-up.
Mr. Podesta, an “X-Files” fanatic, ran a fan club for the show in the Clinton White House. “The ‘X-Files’ fan club would like to invite you and Mulder to lunch at the White House. Don’t let the boss know,” he wrote in a 1998 email, referring to the show’s fictional F.B.I. agent Fox Mulder, according to White House documents. In 1999, Mr. Podesta had an “X-Files”-themed 50th birthday party that the Clintons attended.
When Mr. Podesta left the White House last year, he posted on Twitter: “Finally, my biggest failure of 2014: Once again not securing the #disclosure of the U.F.O. files. #thetruthisstilloutthere.”
Mr. Podesta declined to comment for this article.
Mrs. Clinton, who speaks frequently about her childhood aspirations to be a NASA astronaut, has been sympathetic to Mr. Podesta’s efforts.

Before that meeting, John H. Gibbons, the former director of the White House Office’s of Science and Technology Policy, had warned Mrs. Clinton about Mr. Rockefeller, who had spent years pressuring the government to release files relating to a 1947 crash near Roswell, N.M., that had become the source of theories about a cover-up of an alien spaceship.
He will “want to talk to you about his interest in extrasensory perception, paranormal phenomena and U.F.O.s,” Mr. Gibbons wrote.
The meeting enthralled conspiracy theorists and, in turn, inspired Hollywood writers.
“If you look at our mythology, there are elements of those kinds of meetings,” Chris Carter, the creator and executive producer of “The X-Files,’’ said in an interview. Mr. Carter, who is supporting Mrs. Clinton, added, “If I have to become a fund-raiser to get an invite to her opening up the files, I’ll do it.”
When Mrs. Clinton started to talk openly about U.F.O.s and government disclosure in her 2016 campaign, some activists traced the remarks back to the 1995 meeting with Mr. Rockefeller.
To this subset of Americans who say the government is covering up what it knows about aliens, and who are incredibly vocal on social media, Mrs. Clinton’s discussion of extraterrestrials signaled an important turn.
Other activists do not care as much about Mrs. Clinton’s vow to “open the files,” but do want prominent politicians to seriously acknowledge that humans may not be the only intelligent life in the universe. A major victory, some say, would be for the candidates to be asked about the topic in a presidential debate.
“It shouldn’t be a source of embarrassment to discuss it,” said Christopher Mellon, a former intelligence official at the Defense Department and the Senate Intelligence Committee. “We should be humble in terms of recognizing the extreme limits of our own understanding of physics and the universe.”

SECRECY BREEDS SUSPICION
Recently, a project called the Human Genome Project 2 (HGP2) was organized by Harvard University. Their mission? To synthesize the full human genome from synthetic materials. They held a closed-door conference on May 10th to discuss the feasibility of this task.
To clarify, the meeting was originally organised in order to “synthesise a complete human genome in a cell line within a period of 10 years” and determine the “deliverables and industry involvement” needed in order to make this happen. From there, the goal of the project is to replace the existing genome within a human cell with the synthetic one.
As you can guess, the talks have caused a bit of a controversy, and the situation was made rather worse because the conference was all behind closed doors—no media coverage was allowed and participants were not allowed to Tweet during the discussion.
This has raised suspicions, and a number of experts in the field object to the secretive nature of the talks given the (what some consider to be) significant ethical implications of working on human DNA.
Would it be okay, for example, to sequence and then synthesize Einstein’s genome? If so, how many Einstein genomes should be made and installed in cells, and who would get to make them?
Drew Endy, a bioengineer at Stanford, and Laurie Zoloth, a bioethicist at Northwestern University, are very outspoken in their opposition to the project. They assert, “while we strongly agree that sustained improvements in DNA construction tools are essential for advancing basic biological science and improving public health, we are skeptical that synthesising a human genome is an appropriate demand driver.”
They continue by pointing out that the medical developments HGP2 aims to attain can be achieved through other means, making the project unnecessary (and unnecessarily risky).
Yet, one of the events primary organizers, George Church, a Genetic professor at Harvard Medical School, points out that they simply didn’t want any publicity because the paper related to the talk is under review for publication, and the scientists behind the work can’t publicly discuss it until after review.
But others remain unconvinced.

THEY CAN, BUT SHOULD THEY BE ALLOWED TO?
The issue is not a question of feasibility. It is not a matter of whether or not it’s possible to “synthesise a complete human genome in a cell line within a period of 10 years.” It’s more a question of whether they should be allowed to carry on with the project.
To be clear, this is a far cry from something like cloning, as they do not need any DNA source. Rather, they would use chemicals to synthesize all three billion units in the DNA sequence from scratch and create individual cells with it. And while this development would be a long ways from creating a fully lab-generated human, it could pioneer developments that, some assert, may be a cause for concern.
As of today, the laws governing genomics and regulations to protect against its misuse are not concrete or universal, which is precisely why this talk is getting such attention. It has served as a kind of locus—a center point that brings together a host of ongoing conversations, serving as a kind of ‘rally’ for those invested in this debate.
And ultimately, these conversations are important. While such work could prove advantageous in developing treatments, allowing us to do away with diseases like cerebral palsy or diabetes, in the wrong hands, such powerful technology could lead to catastrophe, such as in biological warfare.
Ultimately, the potential should inspire us, but the risk should give us pause. Science must advance, but it must do so with informed decision making.

A team of astronomers have recently found a star system where four gas giants have been locked in a resonance for more than 6 billion years. Kepler-223 has four planets hose orbits around the star follow a simple-integer ratio.
LOCKED IN A DANCE
NASA’s Kepler mission has revealed that many planets in our universe could be candidates for harboring life. We have seen planets that inhabit the habitable zones of their star systems, and examples of planets that mimic many of Earth’s qualities. But while its main mission is to find alien worlds that could possibly support life, it has also revealed systems with strange and quirky properties.
Speaking of strange, a team of astronomers have recently found a star system where four gas giants have been locked in a resonance for more than 6 billion years. It means that for that whole period of time, their orbital periods have been related to each other in small-integer ratios.
In layman’s terms, resonance means that in a hypothetical system, when one planet orbits the star once, the other has gone around twice.
For the system Kepler-223, four planets, Kepler-223 b, c, d, and e, have been locked in this resonance. Kepler-223 b and c – the system’s two innermost planets – are in a 4:3 resonance. Kepler-223 c and d are in a 3:2 resonance. And Kepler-223 d and e are in a 4:3 resonance.

Astronomers have found systems with two or three planets in resonance, but four planets is a first.
To find the system, the astronomers first determined the precise size of the star. Then they used brightness data from the Kepler telescope to analyze how the four planets block the starlight and change each other’s orbits, thus inferring the planets’ sizes and masses.
All of this was for the precise goal of finding out exactly how and where planets form. It is hypothesized that most solar systems start out with planets with resonances, but asteroids and small planets knock them out of resonance as time passes by.
It is theorized that this happened to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—being knocked out of resonances that mirror that of Kepler-223.

Des neutrons pour chercher des univers parallèles
Selon certains physiciens, un univers parallèle autoriserait certaines particules à sortir de notre univers pour y rentrer à nouveau. Des neutrons pourraient ainsi jouer les passe-murailles. L’idée a été testée avec le réacteur nucléaire de l’institut Laue Langevin à Grenoble.
Quand la première révolution de la théorie des supercordes est arrivée au milieu des années 1980 grâce à Michael Green et John Schwarz, un fait curieux a intrigué certains physiciens. La version la plus prometteuse de la théorie reposait sur le produit de deux groupes de symétries identiques, à savoir E8 par E8. Chacun de ces groupes de Lie contient comme sous-groupes ceux du modèle standard, ce qui a permis de spéculer sur l’existence d’une sorte de second monde miroir du nôtre qui ne l’influencerait qu’au niveau de la gravité.
En effet, aucune des particules des deux mondes ne semblait pouvoir passer de l’un à l’autre, sauf, peut-être, les gravitons, ce qui donnait une solution élégante au problème de la massemanquante. La matière noire que l’on commençait à considérer sérieusement faisait peut-être partie de cet autre univers parallèle.
La seconde théorie des cordes, apparue au milieu des années 1990, a considérablement stimulé les théoriciens en leur permettant d’élaborer des scénarios compliqués et variés de mondes parallèles à l’aide des dimensions spatiales supplémentaires de la théorie des cordes ou de la théorie de la supergravité de Kaluza-Klein. L’idée que notre univers, et d’autres, était l’équivalent d’une feuille flottant dans l’espace a permis d’imager le concept d’univers membrane en 3D plongé dans un espace en 4 voire 10 dimensions.
Là aussi, des mécanismes décrits par la théorie des cordes pouvaient expliquer pourquoi les particules du modèle standard semblaient confiner à notre univers-membrane, un peu à la façon dont les quarks et les gluons sont confinés dans les hadrons en théorie quantique des champs. Une autre approche d’unification de la physique, la géométrie non commutative d’Alain Connes postule, elle aussi, pour expliquer l’existence du champ de Brout-Englert-Higgs, une sorte de deuxième feuillet d’univers dédoublant le nôtre.
Mais comment tester de telles spéculations débridées des théoriciens ? On a espéré à la fin des années 1990 que plusieurs de ces théories incluant des dimensions spatiales supplémentaires modifiaient nos idées sur la fameuse masse de Planck, le niveau d’énergie où la gravitationquantique et l’unification de toutes les forces se manifestent le plus clairement. On pouvait peut-être sonder ces théories à des énergies accessibles au LHC alors que l’on pensait avant qu’un collisionneur de la taille de la Voie lactée était nécessaire. Il semble malheureusement qu’il n’en soit pas le cas. Bien que rien ne soit certain, n’existerait-il pas malgré tout des phénomènes à basses énergies que l’on pourrait observer et qui donneraient du poids à l’hypothèse que notre univers soit une sorte de membrane ?
Plusieurs chercheurs le pensent, particulièrement en France et en Belgique. C’est ainsi qu’au début des années 2010, Michaël Sarrazin, Fabrice Petit et leurs collègues ont commencé à envisager que par effet tunnel quantique, certaines particules du modèle standard, en l’occurrence desneutrons, pouvaient parfois sauter d’une membrane à une autre si leur distance n’est pas trop importante et si notre univers est en fait formé de deux membranes proches dans un espace plus grand baptisé le « bulk ». On trouve une hypothèse similaire dans le fameux modèle de Randall-Sundrum à la base du scénario d'Interstellar.
Ces sauts seraient rares ce qui expliquerait pourquoi ils restent inobservables dans la vie de tous les jours et au laboratoire. Mais selon les chercheurs, ils pourraient malgré tout être mis en évidence de la façon suivante. On commencerait par utiliser une source de neutrons comme celle disponible à Grenoble à l’institut Laue-Langevin. Un flux de ces neutrons serait enfermé dans un bloc de béton de sorte qu’un détecteur placé à l’extérieur, convenablement calibré pour ne pas tenir compte du flux de neutrons naturel, ne devrait pas pouvoir détecter ceux produits par la source intense à proximité.
Mais si les sauts quantiques entre univers-membrane sont réels, certains neutrons de la source pourraient sortir de notre univers, voyager dans le second puis revenir dans le nôtre de sorte que le détecteur devrait voir un flux anormal de neutrons. L’intensité de ce flux étant reliée à la distance séparant les deux membranes, on aurait de cette façon un moyen de la mesurer.
Les chercheurs ont réalisé cette expérience et ils viennent d’exposer les résultats obtenus dans un article que l’on peut trouver sur arXiv. Pour le moment ils sont négatifs.
The US investor Christopher Mellon worked 20 years for the federal government and according to him there are plenty of well-documented UFO sightings to establish a scientific research. There are enough data, reports by credible witnesses, videos made by trained soldiers and police officers and radar images. Christopher Mellon has now for the first time openly expressed about the information the government has about UFOs. There were some incidents involving UFOs when Mellon worked for the government. A Navy pilot phoned him one day to say that a UFO circling a fighter. The Navy did as far as he knew no further investigation.
In addition, the radar captured four or five bright UFOs in the evening sky. Everyone was puzzled, says Mellon. No government employee showed some interest, even after the images were shown during the TV program Nightline. “It was the complete lack of scientific curiosity because of political correctness,” he said highly frustrated. Mr. Mellon was particularly impressed by the UFO sighting in November 1989 in Belgium, when 13 policemen and hundreds of other witnesses saw two triangular craft above the land. The Belgian Air Force launched an investigation, worked with a group of scientists and consulted with the US and NATO countries, but could give no clear explanation.
And on March 30, 1993 more than 100 witnesses, including policemen and soldiers saw a triangular craft above England. The object was able to shoot away from standstill. The British Ministry of Defense concluded that “an unidentified object (or objects) whose origin was unknown was operating over the UK.” Mellon stresses that these objects were not owned by the US Department of Defense. He adds that the US military does not test new vessels over densely populated areas. Furthermore, he noted that the military is generally unwilling to investigate UFO reports, even if they come from military pilots or senior officials, such as former governor of Arizona Fyfe Symington.
About Hillary Clinton’s promises to declassify UFO files, Mellon does not think Hillary Clinton will gain access to secret government programs on UFOs, if she becomes president. “I remember instances where employees of the White House could not get access to secret programs of the Ministry of Defense. People like Clinton years may hold high positions without ever accessing secret programs of the Ministry, which mostly deal with new weapons. ”
If Clinton wants to find out the UFO topic to the bottom, the best she can do is reaching out to NORAD, the military organization that oversees the US airspace, and let them do the research.

Former Senator Barry Goldwater had made it known to the public his fascination about the UFO issue throughout his life and career. His notable comments and observations on the topic involved several attempts to dig deeply on the rumors of a UFO secretly held at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton in Ohio. The secret location then eventually called the Hangar 18 or the Blue Room.
Goldwater wrote UFO researcher Shlomo Arnon telling that the UFO subject has interested him for many years. He had also made known about his effort to determine what was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, but he was denied his request to know the information about it.
Larry King Live heavily featured the subject of UFOs in more than a few occasions. In 1994, the show guested no other than Goldwater himself. During the interview, Goldwater told King that one could find out what the Air Force and the government knew about UFOs at Wright-Patterson.
Goldwater said that he called General Curtis LeMay and stated that he (Goldwater) knew about a room at Wright-Patterson where they put all secret stuff and asked the General if he could go in. However, the General reportedly got mad at him and told him never to ask the same question again.
Technologically advanced aliens were apparently beating NASA to the moon as UFO hunters claim to have discovered what they considered indisputable evidence of extraterrestrials. Recently, one UFO hunter found and shared an old NASA image from the Apollo 8 mission in 1968.
The still image apparently shows a bizarre triangle UFO parked on the Moon’s surface. It happened to be the last of a sequence of black and white images taken using a 70 mm camera on December 1968 mission.
The team claimed to have secured the image from an unnamed source. However, identical image can be viewed on the website of Lunar and Planetary Institute, a NASA affiliate.
The object appears to cast a shadow on the surface of the Moon, seemingly confirms that it is a solid three-dimensional thing.
The UFO hunters suggest the image proves that members of Apollo 8 crew are not the first to make it to the moon.
Glockner explained that the image they obtained was basically the last in the film magazine shot during the Apollo 8 lunar mission. He said the photo showed something massive either over or on the moon.
Glockner reportedly went back to the Apollo Image Atlas, examined all previous frames, and found nothing ordinary on them except in frame 2908, which seemed to show a massive triangular-shaped object on or over the lunar surface.
Skeptics suggested that it might have been a glitch or image artifact resulting from pixelation errors. However, Glockner pointed out that no such thing as pixelation issue in pictures taken with film as it can only happen in digital images.
Another suggestion from skeptics was that it could have been a speck on the lens or perhaps damage to the film frame.

A boy named Boris Kipriyanovich, or Boriska, lives in the town of Zhirinovsk of Russia’s Volgograd region. He was born on January 11, 1996. Since he was 4 he used to visit a well-known anomalous zone, commonly referred to as Medvedetskaya Gryada – a mountain near the town. It seems that the boy needed to visit the zone regularly to fulfill his needs in energy.
Boriska’s parents, nice, educated and hospitable people, are worried about their son’s fascinating talents. They do not know how others will perceive Boriska when he grows up. The say that they would be happy to consult an expert to know how to raise their wunderkind.
Being a doctor, his mother could not help but notice that the baby boy could hold his head already in 15 days after his birth. He uttered the first word ‘baba’ when he was 4 months old and started to pronounce simple words soon afterwards. At one year and a half he had no difficulties in reading newspaper headlines. At age of two years he started drawing and leaned how to paint six months later. When he turned two, he started going to a local kindergarten. Tutors immediately noticed the unusual boy, his uncommon quickwittedness, language skills and unique memory.
However, his parents witnessed that Boriska acquired knowledge not only from the outer world, but through mysterious channels as well. They saw him reading unknown information from somewhere.
“No one has ever taught him,” Boriska’s mother said. “Sometimes he would sit in a lotus position and start telling us detailed facts about Mars, planetary systems and other civilizations, which really puzzled us,” the woman said.
How may a little boy know such things? Space became the permanent theme of his stories when the boy turned two years old. Once he said that he used to live on Mars himself. He says that the planet is inhabited now too, although it lost its atmosphere after a mammoth catastrophe. The Martians live in underground cities, Boriska says.
The boy also says that, he used to fly to Earth for research purposes when he was a Martian. Moreover, he piloted a spaceship himself. It took place in the time of the Lemurian civilization. He speaks about the fall of Lemuria as if it occurred yesterday. He says that Lemurians died because they ceased to develop themselves spiritually and broke the unity of their planet.
When his mother brought him a book entitled “Whom We Are Originated From” by Ernest Muldashev, he got very excited about it. He spent a long time looking through the sketches of Lemurians, pictures of Tibetan pagodas, and then he told his parents of Lemurians and their culture for several hours non-stop. As he was talking, his mother noticed that Lemurians lived 70,000 years ago and they were nine meters tall… “How can you remember all this?” the woman asked her son. “Yes, I remember and nobody has told me that, I saw it,” Boriska replied.
In Muldashev’s second book “In Search of the City of Gods” he looked through pictures for a long time and recollected a lot about pyramids and shrines. Then he claimed that people would not find ancient knowledge under the Great Pyramid of Cheops. The knowledge will be found under another pyramid, which has not been discovered yet. “The human life will change when the Sphinx is opened, it has an opening mechanism somewhere behind the ear, I do not remember exactly,” he said.
Boriska is one of so-called indigo children. They start to appear on Earth as a token of the forthcoming grand transformation of the planet.
“No, I have no fear of death, for we live eternally. There was a catastrophe on Mars where I lived. People like us still live there. There was a nuclear war between them. Everything burnt down. Only some of them survived. They built shelters and created new weapons. All materials changed. Martians mostly breathe carbon dioxide. If they flew to our planet now, they would have to spend all the time standing next to pipes and breathing in fumes,” Boriska said.
“If you are from Mars, do you need carbon dioxide?”
“If I am in this body, I breathe oxygen. But you know, it causes aging.”
Specialists asked the boy why man-made spacecraft often crash as they approach Mars. “Martians transmit special signals to destroy stations containing harmful radiation,” Boriska replied.
The boy has deep knowledge of space and its dimensions. He is also aware of the structure of interplanetary UFOs. He talks about that like an expert, draws UFOs on slates and explains the way they work. Here is one of his stories: “It has six layers. The upper layer of solid metal accounts for 25 percent, the second layer of rubber – 30 percent, the third layer of metal – 30 percent, and the last layer with magnetic properties – 4 percent. If we give energy to the magnetic layer, spaceships will be able to fly across the Universe.”
Boriska has a lot of difficulties with school. After an interview he was taken to the second grade, but soon they tried to get rid of him. He constantly interrupts teachers and says that they are wrong… now the boy has classes with a private tutor.

A diver has discovered what appears to be an ancient sunken city off Mafia Island in Tanzania. Diver Alan Sutton, from Seaunseen, had originally been looking for the remains of an old fort rumoured to have been washed away to sea, but instead he came across the remains of a wall stretching almost 4km.
"It was jaw dropping," he told IBTimes UK. "It's difficult to explain what it's like to find something like that. I wasn't expecting anything that large, I was expecting an old Portuguese fort and then found something much larger."
The discovery is detailed in a blog post by Sutton, with images showing remnants of the wall. Mafia Island is a small sand island. After flying over in a helicopter, he noticed an "unusually shaped formation in the water". The spot the formation is located in is remote and difficult to access. The location is particularly noted for its murky waters: "Because of the tidal movements and relatively shallow depth, visibility in the area is not good. This is almost certainly why the structures have not been spotted before," he wrote.

However, Sutton and a colleague eventually managed to visit on a low spring tide armed with boats and diving equipment. They were able to photograph and examine areas normally submerged, as well as diving down to see other areas still underwater.
They found a series of what looked like foundations circling a large area. Large oblong blocks up to 5m by 5m stretched along the foundation. The northern and southern foundations run around 3.7km in length – although they think more could be lying undiscovered, covered by sand. It was around 1km at the widest point, while the foundations were up to 10 to 20 metres in depth.
Sutton said the blocks resembled sandstone, but on closer inspection he thinks they are probably made from "some type of cement". "Some of the blocks also have small perfectly square holes in them as well as oblong holes in them near the edges. There are no sandstone deposits known in the area. The logistics of transporting the blocks to the area would have been formidable," he wrote.

As the site is yet to be visited by scientists or archaeologists, its age is not known. However, Sutton points out coral growth near blocks would indicate they have been underwater for at least 550 years. "The site is very large, certainly the size of a city and is definitely man-made and very old," he wrote. "It seems very old and to have been extremely well-constructed, in a fashion unlike the architecture of other ruins in Tanzania and doubtless the site will keep archaeologists busy for many years. Without a large amount of research it is impossible to say exactly what the site is. It however appears to be a very old harbour city."
Why it sank beneath the sea is not known, although a number of possibilities are highlighted. This includes sea level rise, erosion and seismic activity. Sutton has reported the find to Mafia Island authorities and told IBTimes UK he will be visiting the site with archaeologist Felix Chami, from the University of Dar es Salaam later this month.
He has seen pictures taken by Sutton and said it was highly unusual - "enough to want to see for himself", Sutton said. "I suppose there will be lots of things he will look for. I saw a lot of square holes in the blocks which apparently is an ancient construction technique ... he's saying it's very old."

Een duiker heeft voor de kust van Tanzania een verzonken stad ontdekt. Alan Sutton was in de buurt van het eiland Mafia op zoek naar een oud fort, toen hij plotseling op de resten van een vier kilometer lange muur stuitte.
“Mijn mond viel open van verbazing,” vertelde Sutton aan IBTimes UK. “Ik had nooit verwacht dat het zo groot zou zijn. Ik verwachtte een oud Portugees fort, maar vond iets veel groters.”
De duiker heeft op zijn blog uitvoerig over zijn ontdekking geschreven. Toen hij per helikopter over het eiland vloog zag hij een vreemd gevormde formatie in het water. Samen met een collega wist hij bepaalde gebieden te fotograferen en te verkennen die normaal gesproken onder water liggen.
Cement
Het tweetal vond onder meer funderingen rond een groot gebied. Langs de fundering lagen grote langwerpige blokken van vijf bij vijf meter. De noordelijke en zuidelijke funderingen zijn 3,7 kilometer lang, hoewel er waarschijnlijk nog veel meer verborgen ligt onder het zand.
Sutton zei dat de blokken waarschijnlijk zijn gemaakt van een soort cement. Sommige blokken zijn voorzien van kleine gaten langs de rand. Omdat de vindplaats nog niet is bezocht door wetenschappers of archeologen, is er nog niets bekend over de ouderdom.
Hoogst ongewone vondst
De resten zijn zeker door mensen gemaakt en zeer oud, aldus Sutton. Ook lijken ze in niets op andere ruïnes die in Tanzania zijn gevonden. “Deze vindplaats zal archeologen ongetwijfeld vele jaren bezighouden,” zei hij, toevoegende dat het waarschijnlijk gaat om een zeer oude havenstad.
Sutton heeft de vondst gemeld bij de autoriteiten en zal de plek later deze maand bezoeken met archeoloog Felix Chami van de Universiteit van Dar es Salaam. Chami heeft foto’s van de plek gezien en zei dat het gaat om een hoogst ongewone vondst.

Astronomen beweren dat de planetoïde 2007 OR10 groter is dan eerder berekend en eigenlijk de titel ‘dwergplaneet’ verdient. Het object – dat in de wandelgangen ‘Sneeuwwitje’ wordt genoemd – heeft een diameter van 1.535 kilometer en dat is ruim honderd kilometer groter dan dwergplaneet Makemake.
Nieuwe metingen van de Herschel-telescoop en de Kepler-ruimtetelescoop wijzen uit dat 2007 OR10 forser is dan verwacht. Eerder dachten wetenschappers dat de diameter van het transneptunisch object zo’n 1.200 kilometer was.
Vanwaar deze vergissing? Kort na de ontdekking in 2007 gingen astronomen ervan uit dat 2007 OR10 een oppervlak zo wit als sneeuw had. Aangezien het object als zevende dwerg is ontdekt, leek ‘Sneeuwwitje’ een goede tijdelijke naam voor dit hemellichaam.
HEEL VER WEG
2007 OR10 is niet zo makkelijk te bezoeken. Tijdens het aphelium in 2130 is de afstand tussen deze planetoïde en de zon ruim honderd astronomische eenheden (oftewel: honderd keer de gemiddelde afstand tussen de aarde en de zon). Dat komt overeen met zo’n vijftien miljard kilometer. Momenteel is het object iets minder ver verwijderd van de zon, namelijk 88 AE. Dit maakt 2007 OR10 één van de verste objecten in het zonnestelsel.
Door het gereflecteerde zonlicht te vergelijken met de gereflecteerde infrarode straling, weten astronomen nu beter hoe groot 2007 OR10 is. Wat blijkt: het oppervlak is veel roder en donkerder dan verwacht. Geen Sneeuwwitje dus. Mogelijk is er een grote hoeveelheid bevroren methaan, stikstof en kooldioxide te vinden op het oppervlak van 2007 OR10.
Verder valt op dat een dag op 2007 OR10 zo’n 44,8 uur duurt. Dat is de tijd die het object nodig heeft om eenmaal rond de as te draaien. Ook die langzame rotatiesnelheid draagt bij aan een hogere inschatting van de grootte van 2007 OR10.
Alleen de dwergplaneten Pluto (2374 kilometer) en Eris (2326 kilometer) zijn groter dan 2007 OR10. Toch is de derde plek die ‘Sneeuwwitje’ momenteel bezit nog geen vast gegeven. “Ik ben nog een beetje skeptisch over de exacte grootte van het object”, vertelt astronoom Mike Brown aan New Scientist. Hij ontdekte 2007 OR10 in het vorige decennium. “Uit de berekeningen blijkt dat het object een diameter heeft tussen de 1310 en 1610 kilometer. Het is dus heel goed mogelijk dat ‘Sneeuwwitje’ toch nog kleiner is dan Makemake.”
Een groep sterrenkundigen van Sterrenwacht Leiden zoekt naar sterrenstelsels aan de rand van het waarneembare heelal. Maar wat is de rand van het heelal? En waarom kunnen we niet verder kijken?
Zoeken naar sterrenstelsels aan de rand van ons waarneembare heelal. Dat is waar een groep sterrenkundigen van de Sterrewacht Leiden, waar ik mijn promotieonderzoek deed, zich mee bezig houdt. Maar wat is de rand van het heelal? Het heelal is tenslotte oneindig groot. Maar hoe verder we het heelal inkijken, hoe verder we terugkijken in de tijd. Kort na de oerknal was het heelal ondoorzichtig omdat alle materie, voornamelijk waterstof en helium, in geïoniseerde toestand verkeerde. 380.000 jaar na de oerknal was de temperatuur van het heelal zo ver gedaald dat de waterstofionen elektronen konden invangen en er voor het eerst atomen ontstonden. We noemen dit proces recombinatie. Lichtstralen konden zich nu voor het eerst vrij door de ruimte bewegen en het heelal werd doorzichtig. Daarom kunnen we niet verder terugkijken dan 380.000 jaar na de oerknal. Voorbij deze ‘grens’ zien we niets meer. De ruimte houdt niet op, maar de tijd en de eindige leeftijd van het heelal begrenzen tot hoever we kunnen kijken. Binnen die grens bevindt zich het waarneembare universum.

Lang onderweg Het licht van sterrenstelsels aan de rand van ons heelal is vaak wel 13,4 miljard jaar onderweg om ons te bereiken. Dat is 97% van de tijd sinds de oerknal. Dit betekent niet dat de huidige afstand tussen ons en deze sterrenstelsels ook 13,4 miljard lichtjaar is. Sinds het uitzenden van dat licht is het heelal namelijk flink uitgedijd en het stelsel staat nu dus veel verder dan 13,4 miljard lichtjaar van ons vandaan. Ook zien deze sterrenstelsels er vandaag de dag niet meer uit zoals ze op ons computerscherm achter de telescoop verschijnen. Met de tijd zullen de sterrenstelsels zijn gegroeid, samengesmolten met hun naaste buren en misschien zijn het zelfs wel rode en ‘dode’ stelsels geworden, waarin geen stervorming meer plaatsvindt. Dat weten we pas over vele miljarden jaren wanneer het licht dat nu deze stelsels verlaat bij ons op aarde is aangekomen.
De Melkweg.
Baby-Melkweg Op dezelfde manier zou er nu een beschaving kunnen zijn in dit sterrenstelsel aan de rand van het heelal dat terug in de tijd kijkt naar onze Melkweg. Ze zien daar niet onze prachtige geordende spiraalarmen en roterende schijf, maar onze Melkweg hoe die er 13.4 miljard jaar geleden uitzag. Waarschijnlijk was de baby-Melkweg een klein hoopje sterren dat verder veel turbulent gas bevatte. Wij zullen onze eigen geschiedenis nooit direct zien, wél die van andere stelsels in het vroege universum, sterrenstelsels die nu misschien wel op ons lijken. Daarmee kunnen we toch iets over onze eigen geschiedenis leren.
Het reïonisatietijdperk De sterrenstelsels in het vroege heelal waar we naar zoeken bevinden zich in het zogenoemde reïonisatietijdperk. De fase in de geschiedenis van het heelal die na de hierboven beschreven recombinatie volgt, toen het heelal gevuld was met neutraal waterstofgas, wordt vaak met ‘het donkere tijdperk’ aangeduid (zie de afbeelding hieronder). Sterren waren er toen nog niet. Zij ontstonden pas een paar honderd miljoen jaar na de oerknal en kort daarop waren de eerste sterrenstelsels een feit. Deze sterrenstelsels kunnen wij nu in principe zien aan de rand van het waarneembare heelal.

Raadsel in de sterrenkunde De geboorte van deze sterrenstelsels valt samen met het begin van het herionisatietijdperk. De eerste sterren en sterrenstelsels produceerden zoveel energierijke ultraviolette straling dat bijna al het neutrale waterstof in het heelal opnieuw in losse ionen en elektronen gesplitst werd. Deze faseovergang van het kosmische gas vormt al decennia lang een van grootste raadsels in de sterrenkunde. We zien de toestand van het gas veranderen in de metingen van vroege quasars (actieve zwarte gaten die omringende materie opslokken en daarbij enorme hoeveelheden energie vrijmaken), maar hoe het mogelijk is dat de kleine baby-stelsels uit die tijdsperiode genoeg energierijke straling kunnen produceren om het waterstofgas in het heelal opnieuw te ioniseren, is zeker nog niet duidelijk. Er zijn aanwijzingen dat de eerste sterren in het heelal uitzonderlijk zwaar en heet waren en daardoor voldoende ioniserende straling produceerden (zie de afbeelding hieronder). Of misschien was het de vrijgemaakte energie door de eerste quasars en andere materieopslokkende zwarte gaten.

Pas sinds een aantal jaar zijn we in staat om sterrenstelsels uit het reïonisatietijdperk te identificeren. Dit is zeker geen makkelijk karwei, maar omdat deze stelsels ons zoveel kunnen leren over deze vroege fase uit de geschiedenis van het heelal en de geschiedenis van onze eigen Melkweg, wordt er veel geïnvesteerd in dit onderzoek.
DIE STIPJES ZIJN BIJNA ALTIJD STERRENSTELSELS DIE HEEL VER WEG STAAN EN WAARVAN HET LICHT AL MILJARDEN JAREN NAAR ONS ONDERWEG IS
Stipjes in de ruis De eerste stap in het speuren naar sterrenstelsels aan de rand van het heelal is het zoeken naar de meest lichtzwakke objecten aan de hemel. De beroemde Hubble Space Telescope is daar uitstekend toe in staat. Elk jaar stelt het Hubble Space Telescope Science Institute een gedeelte van haar data vrij beschikbaar aan het publiek zodat sterrenkundigen (maar ook niet-sterrenkundigen) daar optimaal gebruik van kunnen maken en iedereen de mogelijkheid heeft om zelf naar de meest interessante objecten te zoeken. Een aantal gebieden aan de hemel zijn door de jaren heen zo vaak waargenomen dat de opgetelde belichtingstijd meer dan 100 uur beslaat. Door vele Hubble-opnames in de computer bij elkaar samen te voegen kunnen we de achtergrondruis steeds verder onderdrukken en zien we opeens allerlei piepkleine stipjes verschijnen. Die stipjes zijn bijna altijd sterrenstelsels die heel ver weg staan en waarvan het licht al miljarden jaren naar ons onderweg is.

De kleur bepalen De volgende stap is om met grote precisie de kleur van een sterrenstelsel te bepalen. Hoe verder een stelsel van ons af staat, hoe meer de golflengten van het licht zijn uitgerekt als gevolg van de uitdijing van het heelal. Het uitgerekte licht van vroege sterrenstelsels heeft nu een veel rodere kleur dan toen het werd uitgezonden. We spreken daarom van roodverschuiving. Hoe roder de kleur, hoe groter de afstand van het sterrenstelsel, hoe langer het licht van dat stelsel naar ons onderweg is en hoe verder wij het stelsel terug zien in de tijd. Door de rode kleur van sterrenstelsels te kwantificeren kunnen we zien uit welke tijdsperiode van het heelal het licht van een sterrenstelsel afkomstig is. Voor dit soort waarnemingen heeft Hubble camera’s met verschillende filters die voor de opnamechip geplaatst kunnen worden. Deze kleurenfilters laten heel specifieke golflengten door, bijvoorbeeld alleen blauw, groen of rood licht. Vervolgens proberen we zo nauwkeurig mogelijk de helderheid van een sterrenstelsel te meten door verschillende filters. Typisch worden zo’n 4 tot 7 opnames met verschillende filters gebruikt om een goede kleurbepaling te doen. Zo kunnen we de meest rode lichtbronnen en daarmee de beste kandidaten voor sterrenstelsels uit het reïonisatietijdperk uitselecteren.
Afstandsbepalingen met spectroscopie Een kleurbepaling levert alleen een schatting van de afstand van een sterrenstelsel op het moment dat het licht uitgezonden werd. Voor nauwkeurigere afstandsbepaling willen we met grote precisie de roodverschuiving meten. Dit doen we door gebruik te maken van spectraallijnen van verschillende atomen in het interstellaire gas van een sterrenstelsel. De golflengte waarop de spectraallijnen van een bepaald atoom worden uitgezonden staat vast en vormt een unieke vingerafdruk van dat element. Een gevoelige spectrograaf kan zelfs in sterrenstelsels aan de rand van het heelal deze spectraallijnen waarnemen. Zo kunnen we een directe vergelijking maken van de golflengte waarop de lijn in het verre sterrenstelsel waargenomen is en welke golflengte deze lijn in een aards laboratorium heeft. Het verschil tussen de twee golflengtes vertelt ons met zeer hoge nauwkeurigheid de roodverschuiving van hetsterrenstelsel.
Lyman-alpha Het overvloedig aanwezige waterstofgas in het heelal ‘produceert’ duidelijke spectraallijnen. De belangrijkste waterstoflijn heet Lyman-alpha, op een golflengte (zonder roodverschuiving) van 121.6 nanometer (nm). Door de hoge roodverschuiving meten we deze lijn in sterrenstelsels in het vroege universum typisch rond de 1000 nm. We vergelijken dit met het licht dat het menselijk oog waarneemt. De kleuren van de regenboog liggen in het golflengtegebied tussen 380 en 780 nm. De Lyman-alpha-lijn van waterstofgas straalt hier op aarde in het voor ons onzichtbare ultraviolette deel van het spectrum, maar verschuift helemaal naar het nabije infrarood voor deze verre sterrenstelsels waar het opnieuw onzichtbaar is voor onze ogen. Tot een paar jaar geleden werd Lyman-alpha veelvuldig gebruikt om vervolgonderzoek te doen aan sterrenstelsels die met Hubble waren geïdentificeerd als belangrijke kandidaat-stelsels in het vroege heelal. De afstanden van deze extreem verre stelsels werden bepaald met state-of-the-art nabij-infraroodspectrografen. Deze sterrenstelsels werden echter gevonden in de tijdsperiode nét na het reïonisatietijdperk. In het reïonisatietijdperk komen nog steeds grote hoeveelheden neutraal waterstofgas verspreid in het heelal voor. Neutraal waterstof absorbeert het Lyman-alpha-licht, zodat de eerste sterren en sterrenstelsels die tijdens het reïonisatietijdperk op het kosmische toneel verschenen, voor ons onzichtbaar blijven. Het neutrale waterstofgas in het reïonisatietijdperk is te vergelijken met de mist van het kosmische ochtendgloren waar we nauwelijks doorheen kunnen kijken.

James Webb Telescope Het is daarom uitermate moeilijk om sterrenstelsels in het reïonisatietijdperk te identificeren met behulp van waterstoflijnen. Hoewel het theoretisch mogelijk is om sterrenstelsels te identificeren met behulp van andere atomaire spectraallijnen, zijn er op dit moment geen instrumenten die gevoelig genoeg zijn en in het juiste golflengtegebied opereren voor deze waarnemingen. We hopen dat over een paar jaar hierin verandering zal komen met de lancering van de James Webb Space Telescope, maar tot die tijd zijn we voornamelijk van Lyman-alpha afhankelijk. Voorlopig blijft daarom de vraag: is het lage succesgehalte van het opsporen van verre sterrenstelsels met Lyman-alpha het gevolg van de absorptie door neutraal waterstof of is onze voorselectie die we met Hubble maken nog niet goed genoeg? Het nemen van spectra kan alleen via lange belichtingstijden met grote aardse telescopen, waardoor het belangrijk is om alleen de meest veelbelovende kandidaten te onderzoeken. Want hoe beter je selectie van kandidaat-sterrenstelsels door middel van een kleurenanalyse, hoe groter de kans op een succesvolle spectroscopische identificatie.

Spitzer Space Telescope In Leiden maken we de laatste paar jaar naast Hubble steeds meer gebruik van deSpitzer Space Telescope. Spitzer heeft een veel kleinere spiegel, slecht 85 cm in diameter in plaats van 2.4 m zoals Hubble, maar heeft als voordeel dat de telescoop, anders dan Hubble, kan waarnemen in het verre infrarood. In mijn promotieonderzoek werkte ik veel met verre infraroodopnames van Spitzer. Er werd lang gedacht dat de infraroodstraling die we met Spitzer in sterrenstelsels waarnemen, vooral afkomstig is van sterren met een lage massa. Kleine, lichte sterren zijn minder heet en stralen daardoor het grootste deel van hun licht in het infrarood uit. Omdat er veel meer lichte sterren zijn dan zware, kun je de totale massa aan sterren in een sterrenstelsel meten door te kijken naar de totale hoeveelheid straling in het verre infrarood. Tijdens mijn promotieonderzoek voerde ik met Spitzer deze massabepaling uit op (kandidaat)sterrenstelsels uit het reïonisatietijdperk. Tijdens dat werk deed ik een onverwachte ontdekking: er bleek ‘extra’ flux (stralingsintensiteit) aanwezig te zijn in één van de opnames van Spitzer, genomen met één specifiek filter. De extra flux was duidelijk niet aanwezig in opnames met andere kleurenfilters. Na alle andere opties uitgesloten te hebben kwamen we tot de conclusie dat het extra licht afkomstig moet zijn van de spectraallijnen van zuurstofatomen in het hete gas rondom pasgeboren sterren.
Nader onderzoek Waarom dit licht zo sterk is, is nog niet duidelijk en wordt nog nader onderzocht. Maar nu we weten dat het hete gas in deze sterrenstelsels zoveel licht uitstraalt in het verre infrarood, moeten we daar zeker rekening mee houden in ons onderzoek. Ten eerste is het belangrijk dat we onze massabepalingen van sterrenstelsels niet laten beïnvloeden door deze onverwachte lichtbron. Daarnaast geeft het hete gas ons een extra mogelijkheid voor het identificeren van sterrenstelsels in het reïonisatietijdperk. De verste sterrenstelsels hebben namelijk het meest roodverschoven licht en dat geldt dus ook voor het ‘extra’ licht van het hete gas dat we waarnemen in de opnames met bepaaldeSpitzer-filters.
Hoge lichtintensiteit Een groep wetenschappers in Leiden, Rychard Bouwens, Ivo Labbé, Mauro Stefanon, master-student Guido Roberts-Borsani en ikzelf, hebben verschillende Spitzer-opnames van sterrenstelsels onderzocht. Van deze stelsels vermoedden we al dat ze zich in het reïonisatietijdperk bevonden omdat de kleurmeting met Hubble daar op wees. Maar daarnaast hadden sommige sterrenstelsels ook een heel hoge lichtintensiteit in de opname met het meest rode filter van Spitzer. Een meting die bijna identiek was aan de sterrenstelsels met zuurstof-spectraallijnen die we al eerder hadden waargenomen, maar dan nóg verder roodverschoven! Deze ontdekking was de aanleiding voor een aantal vervolgwaarnemingen in samenwerking met wetenschappers Pascal Oesch (Yale University) en Adi Zitrin (Caltech) in de Verenigde Staten om te proberen een gedetailleerde afstandsbepaling te doen van de drie meest veelbelovende sterrenstelsels.
EÉN VAN DEZE STELSEL, DATEREND VAN SLECHTS 650 MILJOEN JAAR NA DE OERKNAL, BRAK HET AFSTANDSRECORD
Het verste sterrenstelsel ooit Sinds 2013 was het record van het verste sterrenstelsel ooit gemeten en bevestigd met een Lyman-alpha-lijn op 1034 nm, in handen van een stelsel waarvan het licht 700 miljoen jaar na de oerknal was vertrokken. Het stelsel werd opgespoord door Steven Finkelstein van de universiteit van Austin, Texas, met behulp van de Amerikaanse Keck-telescoop op Hawaï. Steven onderzocht een klein dozijn sterrenstelsels en kon slechts bij één daarvan de afstand vaststellen. Om dit record te verbeteren kreeg Pascal Oesch waarneemtijd op dezelfde Keck-telescoop tijdens de nachten van 23 en 25 april 2014. Twee kandidaat-sterrenstelsels, eerder achterhaald met zowel Hubble als Spitzer, werden waargenomen, en verrassend genoeg ontdekte Oesch de Lyman-alpha-lijn in beide stelsels op 1031 en 1062 nm. Eén van deze stelsels, EGS-zs8-1, dateerde van slechts 650 miljoen jaar na de oerknal en brak het afstandsrecord (zie hieronder).

Aangemoedigd door dit succes kreeg Adi Zitrin opnieuw de kans om op 10 en 11 juni 2015 een derde sterrenstelsel uit dezelfde Hubble en Spitzer-selectie te bestuderen met Keck. Opnieuw werd de Lyman-alpha lijn-vastgesteld, deze keer zelfs op 1178 nm. Het licht van dit stelsel, EGSY8p7, werd uitgezonden toen het heelal minder dan 600 miljoen jaar oud was (figuur 4 en 5). De identificatie van de ‘extra’ Spitzer-flux, veroorzaakt door het hete gas in stervormingsgebieden van extreem verre sterrenstelsels heeft in korte tijd grote gevolgen gehad voor de studie van deze stelsels aan de rand van het waarneembare heelal. Niet alleen deze nieuwe afstandsrecords zijn opmerkelijk, maar vooral de efficiëntie van het onderzoek: drie geselecteerde sterrenstelsels leverden drie Lyman-alpha-lijnen op waarmee de afstand kon worden bepaald. Betwisten deze ontdekkingen ons beeld dat neutraal waterstof in het reïonisatietijdperk Lyman-alpha absorbeert? Hoe kan het dat voorgaande studies slechts een efficiëntie van 5% konden bereiken?
Het verre sterrenstelsel, EGSY8p7, ontstond toen het heelal nog maar 550 miljoen jaar oud was. Deze recordhouder is ontdekt in afbeeldingen van de Hubble- en Spitzer-ruimtetelescopen. De bijzonder rode kleur in de infraroodafbeelding van Spitzer was aanleiding om het stelsel nader te onderzoeken. Het raadsel van de geïoniseerde bubbels Het waargenomen Lyman-alpha-licht in deze extreem verre sterrenstelsels is afkomstig uit het reïonisatietijdperk en stelt ons voor een raadsel. We weten dat er veel absorberend neutraal waterstof aanwezig was in het heelal rond die tijd, maar duidelijk zijn niet alle gebieden van het vroege universum compleet gevuld met dit gas. Want anders zouden we stelsels als EGS-zs8-1 en EGSY8p7 nooit kunnen waarnemen.

Hypothese Eén mogelijke hypothese is dat deze sterrenstelsels zelf genoeg ioniserende straling hebben uitgezonden voor het vormen van een grote ‘bubbel’ of bel van geïoniseerd gas rondom het stelsel. De Lyman-alpha-straling kan deze bel ongehinderd doorkruisen, maar wordt onderweg roodverschoven – en verliest daardoor energie – als gevolg van de uitdijing van het heelal. Tegen de tijd dat het licht een gaswolk van neutraal waterstof tegenkomt kan die het Lyman-alpha-licht niet meer absorberen: de energie van de fotonen is daarvoor nu te laag. Dat lukt alleen als de bel een voldoende grote afmeting heeft. Tijdens de reis van het Lyman-alpa-licht door de bel moet de afgelegde afstand en de reistijd groot genoeg zijn om de expansie van het heelal zijn werk te laten doen. De roodverschuiving moet immers groot genoeg zijn om te voorkomen dat de straling in de ‘mist’ van het neutrale waterstof voorbij de grens van de geïoniseerde bubbel verdwijnt.
Hoe ontstaat zo’n bubbel? De vraag is nu: hoe is deze geïoniseerde bubbel ontstaan? Waar komt de ioniserende straling vandaan om dergelijke reusachtige bellen te vormen? Misschien bestaat er een verband met de mysterieuze spectraallijnen van zuurstof die deze drie sterrenstelsels hebben. Deze lijnen zijn afkomstig van het hete gas rondom de stervormingsgebieden in deze stelsels. Het zou kunnen dat in deze sterrenstelsels extreem hete sterren geboren worden die overmatig veel ioniserende ultraviolette straling produceren. Een aantal kandidaten zoals snel roterende sterren en massieve binaire sterren zijn voorgesteld, maar bewijs vinden voor één van deze theorieën is heel moeilijk. Misschien zal de James Webb-telescoop uitsluitsel geven.
Alternatief Een alternatieve hypothese voor de geïoniseerde bubbels zegt dat deze sterrenstelsels in een redelijk ver gevorderd stadium van hun evolutie verkeren. De grote helderheid van deze stelsels kan daarop wijzen. Ver ontwikkelde sterrenstelsels vormen vaak groepen en leven dus in overbevolkte gebieden. Dat zou betekenen dat er meerdere sterrenstelsels in de buurt moeten zijn en dat de gezamenlijke straling van deze groep sterrenstelsels een bel van geïoniseerd gas kan produceren. Om deze theorie te bevestigen zal er nog veel meer telescooptijd moeten worden geïnvesteerd, aangezien de sterrenstelsels in de directe nabijheid van onze nieuw ontdekte stelsels veel lichtzwakker zijn.
Voor onze onderzoeksgroep bestaat de eerstvolgende stap uit het verzamelen van een grotere steekproef van dit soort sterrenstelsels. We hebben meer kandidaten met Spitzer geselecteerd en nieuwe waarneemtijd is toegewezen aan Ivo Labbé door de European Southern Observatory om met de Very Large Telescope in Chili naar Lyman-alpha te zoeken in deze sterrenstelsels. We komen stapje voor stapje dichter bij het oplossen van het raadsels van het reionisatietijdperk en het vinden van sterrenstelsels in het meest vroege stadium van het heelal.
