Government and military secrets can range from terrifying to amusing to downright absurd, but most are nothing short of intriguing. From a secret U.S. Air Force project to build a supersonic flying saucer to a now-famous World War II-era research program that produced the first atomic bombs, here are seven declassified military or CIA secrets.

7. Project 1794
In late 2012, the U.S. Air Force declassified a trove of documents, including records of a secret program to build a flying saucer-type aircraft designed to shoot down Soviet bombers. The ambitious program, called Project 1794, was initiated in the 1950s, and a team of engineers was tasked with building a disc-shape vehicle capable of traveling at supersonic speeds at high altitudes.
The declassified documents reveal plans for the plane to reach a top speed of Mach 4 (four times the speed of sound), and reach an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,480 meters). The project's estimated cost was more than $3 million, which in today's dollars would be more than $26 million.
Project 1794 was canceled in December 1961 after tests suggested the flying saucer design was aerodynamically unstable and would likely be uncontrollable at high speeds (let alone supersonic speeds).
In the 1960s, the U.S. Army embarked on a secret mission to build a series of mobile nuclear missile launch sites under the Greenland ice sheet. The objective was to house medium-range missiles close enough to strike targets within the Soviet Union.
The program was codenamed Project Iceworm, but to test its feasibility, the Army launched a cover research project called "Camp Century" in 1960. Under this guise, engineers built a network of underground buildings and tunnels, including living quarters, a kitchen, a recreation hall, infirmary, laboratories, supply rooms, a communications center and a nuclear power plant.
The base, which was kept secret from the Danish government, operated for seven years. The program was canceled in 1966 after shifting ice created unstable conditions. Today, the crushed remains of Project Iceworm are buried beneath Arctic snow.
During the Cold War, the CIA initiated Project MK-ULTRA, a secret and illegal human research program to investigate potential mind-control systems. The program's operators examined the effects of hypnosis, biological agents and drugs, such as LSD and barbiturates, on human subjects. Some historians suggest the program was designed to develop a mind-control system that could be used to "program" the brains of potential assassins. [The 10 Craziest Military Experiments]
In 1973, then-CIA director Richard Helms ordered that all documents from Project MK-ULTRA be destroyed, but a formal investigation into the program was launched several years later. The project became the basis for several movies, such as "The Manchurian Candidate" and "The Men Who Stare at Goats."

4. Area 51
Almost no other site has garnered as much attention from conspiracy theorists and UFO-enthusiasts as Area 51, a remote desert tract near Groom Lake in Nevada, roughly 83 miles (134 kilometers) northwest of Las Vegas. The intense secrecy surrounding the base sparked peoples' imaginations, and Area 51 was commonly linked to paranormal activities, including pervasive theories that suggested Area 51 hid aliens and UFOs.
In July 2013, declassified documents from the CIA acknowledged the existence of Area 51 for the first time, and confirmed that the top-secret sitewas used to test a variety of spy planes, including the well-known U-2 reconnaissance aircraft.
While Area 51, which operates as a detachment of Edwards Air Force Base in neighboring California, has never been declared a covert base, the research and activities conducted there were some of the nation's most closely guarded secrets.
While Area 51 was not a top-secret base designed to study extraterrestrials, the U.S. Air Force did study the existence of UFOs. Project Grudge was a short-lived program launched in 1949 to study unidentified flying objects. The mission followed an earlier program, known as Project Sign, which published a report in early 1949 stating that while some UFOs seemed to be actual aircraft, there was not enough data to determine their origins. Critics of Project Grudge said the program solely set out to debunk UFO reports, and very little actual research was conducted. In his book on the topic, Edward J. Ruppelt, Air Force Captain and director of Project Grudge, wrote: "[I]t doesn't take a great deal of study of the old UFO files to see that standard intelligence procedures were not being followed by Project Grudge. Everything was being evaluated on the premise that UFOs couldn't exist. No matter what you see or hear, don't believe it."

2. Operation Paperclip
In September 1946, President Harry Truman authorized a program called Operation Paperclip, which aimed to lure scientists from Nazi Germany to the United States following World War II. Officials at the Office of Strategic Services (the predecessor to the CIA) recruited German scientists to America to aid the country's postwar efforts, which would also ensure that valuable scientific knowledge would not end up in the hands of the Soviet Union or the divided East and West Germany.
One of the most well-known secret research programs is the Manhattan Project, which eventually produced the world's first atomic bombs. The project began in 1939, and was cloaked in secrecy as physicists investigated the potential power of atomic weapons. From 1942 to 1946, Major General Leslie Groves of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers led the Manhattan Project.
The first nuclear bomb was detonated at 5:30 a.m. on July 16, 1945, during the so-called Trinity test at the Alamogordo Air Base, 120 miles (193 km) south of Albuquerque, N.M. The explosion created a mushroom cloud that stretched 40,000 feet (12,200 m), and the bomb's explosive power was equivalent to more than 15,000 tons of TNT.
A month after the Trinity test, two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in the waning stages of World War II. To date, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki remain the only uses of nuclear weapons in war.

In her race to secure the Democratic nomination for president, Hillary Clinton has recently drawn support from an unusual voter base — alien enthusiasts. First in a radio interview, then again on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Clinton expressed interest in making public files about UFOs and the mysterious Nevada site called Area 51.
"I would like us to go into those files and hopefully make as much of that public as possible. If there's nothing there, let's tell people there's nothing there," said Clinton, speaking with Kimmel. She confirmed that her husband, former President Bill Clinton, had also gone looking for extraterrestrial information during his presidency and came up empty.
"If anyone is expecting to find flying saucers or dead aliens or any of that stuff, I think they'll be very disappointed," said Jeffrey T. Richelson, senior fellow with the National Security Archive at George Washington University, of this hypothetical release, in an interview with Live Science.
The National Security Archive, a nonprofit founded in 1985 to uncover and archive government documents and release them to the public, holds the second-largest collection of declassified U.S. files (the federal government has the largest repository).
As part of the archive's efforts, Richelson edited a release of declassified Area 51 files in 2013 that included more than 60 documents. Among many other activities, these files shed some light on Area 51's role in the development of stealth programs and the test flights of covertly obtained Soviet MiG fighter jets during the Cold War.
What is Area 51?

Located in Nevada about 80 miles (130 kilometers) northwest of Las Vegas, Area 51 is a military base that is restricted to the public. Its official name is the Nevada Test and Training Range, which is part of the Edwards Air Force Base.
Over the years, people who have worked (and claimed to have worked) at Area 51 have added fuel to the UFO fire with claims of working with aliens or having access to alien technology gathered from spacecraft crash sites. [7 Huge Misconceptions About Aliens]
"It's important to separate [what really happened there] from what most people think of when they think of Area 51: that that's where there is alien technology, a crash that had occurred somewhere that had been picked up by the military and kept there in a super-secret base, and all that kind of stuff," said Roger D. Launius, associate director for collections and curatorial affairs at the National Air and Space Museum. "That piece of it is a folklore that has no bearing [on] and no relationship to any reality whatsoever."
The scoop on spy planes
What is real, added Launius, is the facility's involvement in highly classified aerospace research and development.
Area 51's connection to experimental aircraft may be a reason why people have connected it with extraterrestrial cover-ups. After all, it is a well-known yet super-secret base that has many strange aircraft fly in and out of it, Richelson said. By his estimation, further details about the different aircraft programs that have connections to Area 51 would be the most likely results of any actions Clinton would take to declassify documents about the facility.
Specifically, Richelson theorized that further declassification of Area 51 documents could fill us in on what has gone on there after the U-2, OXCART (the successor to the U-2), F-117 and SR-71 Blackbird secret aircraft projects, which were featured in the 2013 document release. It's a challenge to theorize about the contents of secret documents, but Richelson's best guesses were that the public might gain additional information about stealth-drone programs, such asthe RQ-170 and RQ-180, and other exotic aircraft that were tested but never produced in significant numbers.
One aircraft that he said we could learn more about is the Northrop Tacit Blue, a battlefield surveillance aircraft that, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, "tested advanced radar sensors and new ideas in stealth technology." This unusual plane, with curves reminiscent of a to-go box, flew 135 times before the program ended in 1985.
Regardless of whether people are invested in extraterrestrial revelations, Launius said there is an important point to be made about Clinton's declassification discussions. "I would like to think that, whoever the president is — whether it's Mrs. Clinton or it's Mr. Trump, or it's somebody else, or the current president as well — that every piece of classified information that exists inside the federal government that is no longer necessary for our national security, should be declassified," he said.
While he is in favor of openness in regard to government records, Launius also notes that declassification does require significant effort and may take several years to complete, even with a presidential push.

A former police officer has come forward with astonishing information which he says sheds new light on Britain's most famous UFO case.
Gary Heseltine, 56, claims a UFO visited RAF Bentwaters as extra-terrestrials were interested in a 'secret' stash of nuclear weapons at the American airbase.
The incident, dubbed the British Roswell, made the front page of the now defunct News of the World and has sparked several books and documentaries.
Gary, who clocked up almost 24 years in the British Transport Police, claims the deputy base commander, Colonel Charles Halt, told him the Suffolk airbase had the largest arsenal of nuclear weapons in Europe.

UFOs reportedly buzzed Rendlesham Forest and the nearby USAF base over three nights in late December 1980.
During one close encounter, Staff Sergeant Jim Penniston says he even touched a small triangular craft describing it as "smooth to touch" with strangle symbols similar to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs before it zoomed away.
Col Halt led a small team of experts into the woods when the UFO returned two nights later and made a 20-minute tape recording as he described the object as like a 'red winking eye'.

He also filed a memo detailing the incident to the British Ministry of Defence which was released under auspices of the Freedom of Information Act a few years later.
The most controversial aspect of the incident are reports the UFO fired beams of light into the 'weapons storage area' - a term used by the military for nuclear bunkers.
Retired detective Gary claims Col Halt told him that RAF Bentwaters had "more nuclear missiles in the weapons storage area (WSA) than anywhere else in Europe".
He says the high-ranking USAF official made the shocking admission as they toured the base and Rendlesham Forest for a documentary, which was never made.
Col Halt is one of the highest ranking military witnesses in the world to have talked about UFOs.
Gary, who guarded nukes while serving in the RAF Police, said: "As my wife Lynn and I walked with Colonel Halt through Rendlesham Forest I clearly remember him saying 'that there were more nuclear weapons in the WSA at Bentwaters than anywhere else in the whole of Europe' and he laughed that the peace protesters who were just up the road camped outside Greenham Common were oblivious as to where they really were."
Backing up her husband, Lynn said: "I clearly remember Colonel Halt saying that there were 'more nuclear weapons in the WSA at Bentwaters than anywhere else in Europe'. It has always stayed with me because of the fact that the peace protesters at Greenham Common had been duped."
However Col Halt told Mirror.co.uk: "My comment to Gary was, 'It appears the beam was in or near the weapons storage area'.
"Keep in mind I was a mile or more away. I never made such a statement about weapons to Gary. Those are his conclusions."

The UK and US governments have always had a policy of neither confirming nor denying that weapons of mass destruction were stored at the base.
In December 1980, the base was on high alert as Soviet troops were massing on the border of Poland over Lech Walesa and the rise of the solidarity movement and there was a US hostage crisis ongoing in the Middle East.

He added: "This information now provides for the first time a genuine motive as to why UFOs turn up at the bases in late December 1980 at a time of world crisis and clearly implies to me that a huge cache of illegal nuclear weapons posed a potential destabilising threat to the Earth."
The latest twist comes after two retired radar operators at the base claimed the UFO travelled 120 miles in eight seconds.
Ike Barker and Jim Carey tracked the unidentified target making a sharp right angle turn on radar and said it was not man-made.
However sceptics claim the UFO was a lighthouse, the re-entry of a satellite or a meteor, despite high radiation readings taken by experts at the landing site.

The US, Russia, and China are building ultra high-speed hypersonic missiles as part of a new strategic arms race focused on weapons that maneuver at speeds from 4,000 to 11,000 mph. Two basic designs include gliders and jet-powered vehicles. These new missiles move so fast that current US missile defense systems would be overwhelmed and rendered obsolete.
In January 2016, China conducted its first test of its new hypersonic missile vehicle, WU-14, that is part of its strategic nuclear and conventional missile program. All told, China has conducted six successful tests of its hypersonic glide vehicle. According to military experts, the WU-14 is designed to be launched from one of China’s intercontinental ballistic missiles. WU-14 is currently designed for a top speed of ten times the speed of sound or about 3,402 mph.
Russia also recently tested the YU-71, a hypersonic glider capable of delivering nuclear and conventional warheads that would penetrate US advanced missile defenses. The Russians are developing air and sea launched missiles capable of destroying naval ships, buildings, air defenses, satellites, and jets.

For its part, the US Army tested DARPA’s Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2), traveling at 13,000 mph, or Mach 20, during its Aug. 11, 2011, test flight. In another test in 2014, the HTV blew up shortly after launch. Since then, the US has made hypersonic missile technology a major priority, awarding multimillion contracts to Raytheon and Lockheed Martin with new test launches planned as early as 2020.
While all three militaries work on hypersonic missile technology, they are also strengthening underground missile silos and facilities to withstand strikes by hypersonic missiles.

On the night of October 21, 1978 Frederick Valentich radioed into air traffic control in Melborne with some strange news. An unidentified metallic craft was toying with his Cessna as he flew over the Bass Strait en route to King's Island. No one ever saw him or his aircraft again.
It all happened during the largest wave of UFO sightings Australia had ever seen. Over fifty reports were uncovered from the area of Valentich's disappearance on that day alone. In the early days of DARPA’s work on stealth technology, Have Blue, a prototype of what would become the F-117A, first flew successfully in 1977. The success of the F-117A program marked the beginning of the stealth revolution, which has had enormous benefits for national security.

While Phase 1 was focused on presentation and selection of designs, Phase 2 will be centered around building prototypes. As of now, there are three companies in the running to build XS-1 for DARPA: Boeing, Masten Space Systems, and Northrop Grumman.
XS-1 will reportedly utilize a spaceplane-based launch system. Once airborne, the XS-1 would gain altitude and accelerate to near escape velocity. An expendable upper stage would separate and boost up into orbit to deliver its cargo. The other stage—the actual spaceplane—will do all the heavy lifting. This stage will glide down for a soft landing after the upper stage detaches.
With such a system, DARPA hopes to dramatically cut down the cost of traveling into space. The system even has the potential to make daily launches possible, a milestone that would capture the interest of military and commercial space players alike.

Scientists found that typical galaxies forming stars in the early universe have only twenty percent of metals compared with those in the present day universe. These new findings are helping scientists reconsider theories on how stars form.
UNCERTAIN THEORIES
An international team of scientists has discovered discrepancies in our theories on star formation. When the team used the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii to study the role of metal content in the star formation rates of distant galaxies, they discovered metal content in these galaxies is similar, regardless of the galaxies’ star formation activity.
The scientists were studying 41 normal star-forming galaxies that were 11 billion light years away using the Multi-Object Spectrograph for Infrared Exploration (MOSFIRE) instrument installed on the Keck I telescope.

Credit:3D-HST/NASA/ESA/STScIThey saw that typical galaxies forming stars in the Universe two billion years after the Big Bang have only 20% of metals (elements heavier than helium) compared to those in the present-day Universe. They also discovered that the metal content is independent of the strength of the star-formation activity—in stark contrast with what is known for recently formed, or nearby galaxies.
MAKING METALS
The amount of metal that forms in a galaxy is the result of a complex interplay between gas coming into the galaxy, star formation in the galaxy, and gas outflowing from the galaxy in the cosmological context. Knowing the amount of metal a galaxy forms, and how that correlates to star formation activity, is fundamental to understanding how galaxies evolve in a distant Universe.
According to prior understanding, scientists would have expected a higher metallicity in less active star-forming galaxies than what was found, as part of the normal stellar and galaxy evolution. These new findings reveal that the role of star formation is not as strong at great distances, as it is at zero.
This lack of influence of the strength of star formation in the metal enrichment in distant galaxies implies that the physical condition regulating star formation in galaxies in the early Universe is possibly different from that seen in the present-day Universe.

A 1968 photo taken during a Lunar Orbiter mission to the moon shows what appears to be a spacecraft that is at least 10 miles (16 km) long resting inside the Crater Manlius. Most of the object is well illuminated by the sun, but the rest is in the shadows of the crater which is approximately 24 miles in diameter and 2 miles deep, What appears to be a spacecraft cockpit is in shadows. What is even more compelling in the Lunar Orbiter photo is what appears to be a road that stretches across the entire horizontal width of the photo. The road can be estimated to be 120 miles (200 km) long and as much as a mile wide (1.6 km).

After ‘the Devil’ found its resting place at Shaitan Mazar, a second expedition has departed in the summer of 1992 to find the remains.
The UFO organization SAKKUFON could not afford losing anymore precious time and resources, that’s why this time, the crew members were carefully selected based on strict criteria. Under the command of retired Major G. Svechkov, the unit went through a series of preparatory physical tests over the course of several months.
During the expedition, the main group was divided into three smaller ones so that at least one of them would succeed in reaching the crashed UFO. Their main objective was to collect as many evidence as possible from the crash site.
They separated on June 1992 after reaching the base camp located about two miles away from the place. The three patrols then had to escalade a dangerous mountain slope in order to reach their destination. After this feat, the only obstacle in their way remained the presumed electrical field in the area. They also had to pay attention to the rumors speaking of villagers that suffered mysterious burns upon approaching the site.
The three divisions met one mile away from the site. From this point they could see the robust object crashed on a desolate plateau. Although the men had trained for this moment for several months, they were still overcome by anxiety and fatigue.
Before heading towards the UFO, they searched for anomalous activity in the vicinity and soon discovered a potent force field that had taken over the area near the object. About three quarters of a mile from the object, all electronic devices failed to respond. Their previous plan to thoroughly inspect the crash site had failed, and they now had to rely only on traditional means to establish the final report.
The crew determined that the UFO smashed into a nearby cliff and broke into two pieces before tumbling down the mountain slope for more than 5,000 feet before stabilizing on the plateau below. The metallic outer covering had been torn open by the explosion, revealing the interior design which consisted of two levels. When the men tried to venture further, they were hold aback by an invisible force field that seemed to cover about half a mile from the UFO.
Although they couldn’t see any alien bodies from that distance, it was at least enough to spot the mysterious green symbols on the sides. UFOlogist Nikolay Subbotin copied them on paper and determined they didn’t belong to any known earthen language. At this point, they were certain the UFO was the one described by the MIG fighters one year from now.
Remains of the MI-8 military helicopter were also visible not far from their position. The investigation led them to believe that the helicopter crashed because of the force field that also denied them further access. Mysteriously enough, no bodies were found inside or near the wrecked helicopter.
There was nothing much the group could do in this case. With the force field preventing them from exploring possibly one of the greatest mysteries of the modern world, and with all the electronic gear malfunctioning, they finally decided to return to base.
Bringing back proof of this UFO crash would have the entire scientific community review their beliefs, but all photographic and video evidence were compromised. However, they didn’t return empty handed, as there were plenty of drawings, notes and sketches taken by the crew, along with their personal accounts of the incident.
This failure (if we can call it that) had only inspired them to return once more to eventually breach the force field and explore the UFO wreckage. Because of insufficient funding, they couldn’t make use of a helicopter right away, that’s why they had to delay the mission until 1998 and cross the mountains all over again.
In the six years that had passed since their last visit, the UFO had disappeared. The helicopter wreck was gone as well. In all likelihood, the military had removed the UFO and nature had taken care of any remaining tracks. The electromagnetic anomalies were no longer present, leading the group to realize they had made the third journey in vain.
Hopeless, they understood the Shaitan Mazar UFO incident was a closed chapter and returned to their usual lives.
The incident remains an enigma until this day, and although physical evidence is missing, the case cannot be fully dismissed. We still have the sketches and testimonies of four jet pilots, backed up by ground radar data.
The members of the second expedition to the Devil’s Grave swear by what they saw and despite criticism, they still hold their claims. It seems the alleged crash of an alien craft into the Tien Shan Mountains is destined to remain a mystery, but some believe the Devil’s Grave was indeed the temporary tomb of an unidentified flying object of otherworldly origins.

Toeristen die een oude kerk in de Roemeense stad Sighisoara in de regio Transsylvanië bezoeken zullen tot hun verbazing een afbeelding van een UFO zien op één van de muren. Dat meldt Romania Insider.
Het vreemde schilderij hangt aan een muur van de 13e-eeuwe Biserica Manastirii in de middeleeuwse citadel van Sighisoara. De kerk brandde in de 17e eeuw af en werd daarna weer opgebouwd. Vanaf dat moment verscheen er een aantal nieuwe schilderijen in de kerk. Op één van die schilderijen is een vreemd object te zien dat op een UFO lijkt.

“In de sacristie van de kerk bevindt zich inderdaad een schilderij met daarop een religieus tafereel dat een wolk voorstelt – mogelijk [profeet] Elia’s voorstelling van de hemel,” citeerde Agerpres directeur Nicolae Tescula van het historisch museum in Sighisoara. “Het object lijkt op een koepel, en kan mensen doen denken dat het een UFO is.”
Het schilderij is volgens Tescula gemaakt door een schilder uit Sighisoara. “Velen zeggen dat het een UFO is. Het lijkt op een UFO, het is de visie van de schilder. Ze lijken op de schilderijen van Leonardo da Vinci,” voegde hij toe.
De kerk, die precies in het midden van de middeleeuwse citadel is gelegen, is twee keer afgebrand. Om die reden bestaat het interieur uit verschillende stijlen. In de kerk ligt ook een grote verzameling oosterse gebedskleden, de op één na grootste verzameling van het land.
A Florida witness at Merritt Island reported watching a triangle UFO with rounded edges that moved and hovered as he and his children watched, according to testimony in Case 75839 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness felt compelled to create a model of the object after the 4 p.m. sighting on February 10, 2015. The case was reported to MUFON on April 15, 2016, and was investigated by Florida MUFON Chief Investigator John A. Gagnon and Field Investigator Diane Law, and closed as an Unknown.

“It was an overcast and cloudy day with a chance of showers,” the witness stated.“My four kids just got home from school and they were riding their bicycles as I was watching them and doing yard work. I stopped yard work, facing north, to watch the kids and one of my daughters, age 7, rode her bike up to me, stopped and asked me, ‘What’s that?’”
The witness said he looked westward and saw a black dot, just below the clouds heading eastward, and told her; ‘It’s a helicopter,’”
But as the witness went back to yard work. His daughter yelled out; ‘It’s a flying car!’”

He finally asked her where the object was, and she pointed up.
“As I looked and saw this object get closer, I could see that it wasn’t a helicopter! The object looked black in color, with wear, like it did a lot of traveling, and was rectangular in shape with rounded edges. There was a light, white in color, at each corner of the triangle, with what looked like a thruster in the center. It was traveling in a straight line, as it was slowly rotating, and didn’t made a sound.”
The witness told his daughter to keep her eyes on it while he retrieved binoculars from his truck on the driveway.
“As I looked through the binoculars, I could see that it had no numbers or letters on it and this was not a helicopter nor a plane. We do live near a very small airport with Cesenas flying in and out all the time.
“But it wasn’t a good day to fly due to the weather. And this object wasn’t a drone either. It didn’t have any propellers and it was flying too high. It flew eastward and suddenly changed direction and went back the other way! It flew then, westward, slowly rotating and then stopped, mid-point to where we first saw it. By then, I could see that it had a dome on top, as it had a smaller white light on top of it, too.”
The object hovered for a few seconds, while still rotating slowly, and then started spinning faster, just below the cloud line.
“As I looked at it, it started to look more like a saucer, as it was spinning. And then, there was like a flash, and the object shot straight up into the clouds!”

The witness said he felt like he was in a dream while looking at this object.
“From the distance and the height of this object, I would say that it had to be approximately 8 feet high and 40 to 50 feet wide. And maybe even the size of a two or three-bedroom home. My daughter and I saw this object for approximately two minutes. I made a model of it, out of ®Styrofoam, because I got a very good look at this object through my binoculars.”
“There have been a number of triangle sightings along the Space Coast for years,” Gagnon and Law wrote in their report.“The number of sightings seems to have increased recently. Not sure if they’re related to Patrick Air Force Base or maybe even Cape Canaveral.I believe the witnesses saw exactly what they claimed they saw – a triangle object moving slowly over their town, then spinning slowly. It then started spinning faster until it looked like a saucer. At that point there was a flash and the object shot straight up into the clouds and disappeared.This will have to show a case disposition of Unknown UAV.”

Een hooggeplaatste Roemeense generaal die eveneens optreedt als adviseur van de overheid aangaande vreemde en niet verklaarbare zaken, vertelt een bijzonder opmerkelijk verhaal.
Over een ontmoeting met twee buitenaardse reptielen op een ochtend vroeg bij een benzinepomp in de buurt van Boekarest.
Generaal Emil Strainu is een inmiddels gepensioneerde generaal uit het Roemeense leger die tijdens zijn actieve loopbaan hooggeplaatste functies vervulde.
Ook nu is hij nog heel actief en onder meer adviseur van de overheid op het gebied van onconventionele zaken en wat men noemt asymmetrische bedreigingen. Daarnaast is hij directeur van een onderzoekscentrum wat zich bezig houdt met UFO’s en oprichter van een vereniging voor onderzoek naar niet geïdentificeerde gebeurtenissen in het luchtruim en de ruimte.
Strainu heeft altijd gezegd dat (buiten)aardse reptielen bestaan en dat ze grote ondergrondse bases en steden op onze aarde hebben. Dat is echter alles wat hij over het onderwerp kwijt wil, want iedere keer zegt hij: “Meer dan dit ga ik niet zeggen over dit onderwerp”.
Nadat Strainu enkele boeken had gelezen van Aryan Hava nam hij contact op met haar om haar een uitzonderlijk verhaal te vertellen. De twee boeken die Strainu van haar had gelezen waren “Inuaki, the reptilian inside me” (deel 1 en 2). Toen Strainu contact op nam met haar stond ze op het punt haar derde boek uit te brengen, getiteld “Anunnaki vs Anunnaki”.
Het volgende verhaal van Strainu verscheen als voorwoord in dit derde boek:
Het verhaal dat Strainu vertelt, gaat over een goede vriend van hem die op een vroege ochtend twee buitenaardse reptielen zag in de Retezatbergen, een onderdeel van de Karpaten.
Zijn vriend is eveneens een hooggeplaatste legerofficier die we kolonel X zullen noemen. Deze kolonel reed op een ochtend terug van een korte kampeertrip die hij had gemaakt alleen in de bergen. Hij was op de terugweg naar Boekarest toen hij op de benzinemeter zag dat hij moest tanken.
Hij stopte bij een klein benzinestation op het platteland rond een uur of vijf in de ochtend. Er was dan ook helemaal niemand. Wel zag hij dat er een kaki gekleurde Hummer met geblindeerde ramen stond met draaiende motor, maar er was niemand te zien.
Het was een benzinestation waar je zelf kon tanken met je bankpas, dus nadat hij zijn tank had gevuld, liep hij terug naar zijn auto. Hij zag dat de deur aan de bestuurderskant van de Hummer openstond en binnenin de auto zag hij een reptielachtig wezen.
Het Reptiel had geen kleren aan, maar droeg militaire laarzen. Het was, net zoals een krokodil, helemaal bedekt met schubben en had een soort kam op zijn hoofd zoals een hagedis.
Het reptiel zag kolonel X en stapte uit de auto terwijl hij de kolonel strak aankeek. Hij gaf wat instructies aan iemand in de auto en keek daarbij nogal geïrriteerd. Toen stapte hij weer snel achter het stuur en reed weg. De auto had geen nummerbord aan de voor- of achterkant.
De kolonel schat het reptiel ongeveer op twee meter groot met gele kattenogen en eveneens eenzelfde soort pupil als een kat.
De kolonel keek om zich heen of er anderen waren die dit ook hadden gezien, maar hij was helemaal alleen. Toen zag hij de bewakingscamera bij het benzinestation.
Toen hij later de eigenaar te pakken kreeg, vertelde deze hem dat die camera er alleen zat voor decoratie, maar het niet deed.
De kolonel vervolgde tenslotte zijn weg richting Boekarest.
Een aantal kilometers verderop zag hij dezelfde Hummer langs de kant van de weg met alle vier de deuren geopend. Buiten de auto zag hij twee reptielen die met elkaar leken te bekvechten.
Het tweede reptiel was nog eens 20 centimeter groter dan de eerste. Deze droeg ook geen kleren, maar ook geen laarzen. Hij had hagedisachtige voeten en had in tegenstelling tot het eerste reptiel een staart.
Ondertussen reden er van beide kanten vrachtwagens voorbij en hij zag dat chauffeurs keken en wezen naar de reptielen, maar wel doorreden. De kolonel pakte zijn mobiel en maakte foto’s van de reptielen die hier weinig bezwaar tegen leken te hebben.
Na een paar minuten stapten de reptielen weer in de auto en reden met hoge snelheid terug in de richting waar ze vandaan waren gekomen. De kolonel nam snel nog enkele foto’s en reed toen verder richting Boekarest, waar hij onmiddellijk contact op nam met generaal Strainu.
Eenmaal terug in Boekarest keek hij samen met Strainu naar de mobiele telefoon waarop stond dat er elf foto’s waren genomen. Echter, alle elf beelden waren volledig groen. Ze namen contact op met de fabrikant van de telefoon, maar daar werden ze ook niet veel wijzer van. Het was alsof de kolonel een foto had genomen van een groen licht. Mogelijk de reden dat de reptielen niet zo bezorgd waren over de foto's die de man aan het nemen was van ze.
Ze zijn twee weken daarna bezig geweest met onderzoek en hebben ook geprobeerd andere getuigen te vinden. Helaas, alles tevergeefs.
De generaal concludeert aan het eind:
“Eén ding is zeker en dat is dat wij in een wereld leven waarvan wij denken dat we die kennen. We denken abusievelijk dat wij de meesters zijn in die wereld. We zijn in feite niets anders dan onderhuurders in transit op een planeet die nooit van ons is geweest en we hebben geen flauw idee wat ons werkelijke doel is”.

Jarnel Singh was walking home through Balby when he caught sight of the beautiful sunset. He took a number of pictures on his mobile phone to show to other people. But when he got home and showed his wife, he noticed a mysterious shape on the picture which he had not initially noticed - and now believes to be an unidentified flying object. He said: “I was just walking along Balby Road, and passing Westfield Park, when I thought how beautiful the sky looked. “It looked so nice that I thought I would take a photograph. I took one, took another a bit further along the road, and then took another one after that. “I went home, and I showed the pictures to my wife. She enlarged the photo, and she saw a dot there. I checked the other two, and it wasn’t on them. “It’s not a bird, it’s not a plane - I don’t know what it is.
There was something there I just can’t explain, and that I don’t recognise. “It is something out of the ordinary - I think that it’s a UFO. “It was silent, whatever it was, as I didn’t hear anything. “There may be life on other planets, I don’t know. “I’m open minded about UFOs - I suppose there is always the possibility. “But I do think I have seen something out of the ordinary. When most stars reach old age and begin to run out fuel, they swell up to hundreds of times their normal size, engulfing planets that orbit too close. But can planets that escape this fiery demise still support life? In this state, can planets around the dying star host life? New research says yes.
In about 7.5 billion years, the sun will have begun its march to the grave and will start expanding. Eventually it will swell to about 200 times its current size. It will swallow Mercury and Venus, and make Earth uninhabitable. But currently frigid locations in the solar system, like the icy moons of Saturn and Jupiter, might become just the right temperature for life.
Many stars in the universe become red giants, and some can remain that way for billions of years. The new work provides an in-depth look at how long planets can remain habitable around red giant stars — in some cases, for up to 9 billion years, which is twice Earth's current age. That's sufficiently long for life to form from scratch, or to flourish in a newer, more welcoming environment. It could also provide a lifeboat for humanity. When the sun expands into a red giant, it will overtake the current orbits of Mercury, Venus and Earth. The planets will move away from the star as it expands, allowing Earth to just barely escape being engulfed.

Crazy hot
Earth currently sits in the "habitable zone" of the sun — the distance at which the planet is warm enough to have liquid water on its surface, but not so hot that the water evaporates. (Liquid water is a requirement for all life on Earth, although the universe could very well serve up exceptions to this). This "just right" spot around a star is also sometimes called the "Goldilocks Zone."
The habitable zone is determined by the luminosity of a star — how much total light it emits over time. When most "normal" stars run out of hydrogen fuel, they start burning helium instead. Helium is a more potent fuel, and boosts the star's energy output at its core. As a result, the star swells up like bread in an oven, and becomes a "red giant."

A star's luminosity, or the total amount of light it emits in a given time, is largely responsible for defining the habitable zone. As a star swells up into a red giant, its luminosity increases. The sun's luminosity will increase by over 4,000 times when it becomes a red giant, the new research shows.
"The Earth [will become] a sizzling wasteland. The sun [will be] nearly at the Earth's orbit. It's going to be crazy hot," Lisa Kaltenegger, associate professor of astronomy and director of the Carl Sagan Institute, told Space.com. Kaltenegger is a co-author on the new research, which appears today (May 16) in the Astrophysical Journal.
But other places in the solar system will land in a less extreme temperature zone. The habitable zone of the sun will shift outward to include the orbits of Jupiter and Saturn, according to the new research.

Under the thick icy layers on the surface of Saturn's moon Enceladus and Jupiter's moon Europa, scientists think it's possible that life could exist in liquid water oceans. The discovery of microbial life living in extreme environments on Earth, like under layers of ice in Antarctica, have boosted this hypothesis.
The new research suggests that when the sun becomes a red giant, life on Europa and Enceladus could thaw out, and have a chance to thrive on a planet that would lie in the habitable zone, Kaltenegger said.
For a star like our sun, a planet could potentially sit in the new habitable zone for half a million years. While that might not be enough time on a distant planet, that could be enough time for life buried under the ice to emerge and evolve into something detectable by Earth-based telescopes, Kaltenegger said.
Around the most massive stars considered in the new work (those in the category "A5," which includes stars more massive than the sun, but not the most massive stars in the universe), a planet could potentially be in the "new" habitable zone for up to 200 million years. Big stars burn fast and bright, but small stars can smolder in the red giant phase for much longer. The new work shows that for small stars, a planet could sit in the red giant habitable zone for up to 9 billion years. If life can evolve on Earth in less than 4 billion years, why not on a planet around a red giant?
Kaltenegger said she and her co-author on the paper, Ramses M. Ramirez, a research associate at the Carl Sagan Institute, have submitted a second paper for publication, in which they provide a list of 23 red giant stars within 100 light-years of Earth — potential targets for planet hunters.
"I hope that this will actually spark an effort by people who look for planets, to also look at these old stars now," she said. "Because if you could find signatures of life on such an evolved planet — a de-frozen planet — that would tell you that (life) could get started subsurface, and that would be an amazing part of the story."
Earth to Be Consumed By Red Giant Star (In 5B Years)
Looking even further ahead, it could mean that humans could escape to the moons of Saturn or Jupiter when Earth becomes uninhabitable, she said.
"People keep saying, 'When our sun becomes a big hot star, then we have to move to Mars or other places.' But really for the first time, we have actually calculated where that place is and when," she said. "If you want to go planet-hopping, you'll want to know when you want to be where, and that's basically what we figured out."
The devil is in the details

To determine where the habitable zone of a star will move to be as the star evolves into a red giant, Kaltenegger and Ramirez used models of stars and their evolution that already exist. This made it possible to compute a star's luminosity, as well as its temperature, which also influences the location of the habitable zone.
Planets that live in the habitable zone aren't necessarily habitable to life as we know it — Venus is just inside the sun's habitable zone, but its ultra-thick atmosphere traps heat on the surface and would likely make the planet uninhabitable, even inside the habitable zone. Still, looking for planets in the habitable zone is a good starting point in the search for life.
Kaltenegger and Ramirez knew that there was one variable in this entire calculation that could render the rest of the research moot — if the star, as it expands into a red giant, strips all nearby planets of their atmospheres.
"This is one of the things we didn't know," Kaltenegger said. In particular, she said the new work is the first time someone has shown whether or not rocky planets slightly less massive than the Earth and those slighty more massive than the Earth, could hold on to their atmospheres as their parent star evolves into a red giant.
Stars lose mass when they become red giants, and that mass gets blasted outward, as part of the so-called stellar wind. The new work shows that some planets will lose their atmospheres during the evolution — those located very close to the star, and those with low gravity (a planet's gravity helps it "hold on" to its atmosphere). But planets with sufficient mass, positioned a safe distance away, can maintain most of their atmosphere, Kaltenegger said.
There were other complicating factors that needed to be factored in, such as the fact that as the star loses mass, its gravitational grip on the planets is reduced. As a result, the orbit of a planet around a star will expand as the star becomes a red giant. (For this reason, the Earth will escape being engulfed by the sun, according to Kaltenegger).
Researchers have worked on the question of habitability around old stars before, but Kaltnenegger said no work has ever been done using models that can reveal details about how both the star and planets will evolve together through such a drastic change to the system.
"This is the first time where we link the model of the star to the model of the planet and see what it does," she said. "The devil is really in the details. The first stabs at it were great work because the idea got started, but it's a lot of work to do, and [Ramirez] actually hunkered down and did it."
NASA researchers discuss the best way to delve into the depths of Saturn's moon Titan in a new clip from the Science channel show "Space's Deepest Secrets."
The exclusive clip comes from the show's fourth episode, which airs Tuesday (May 17) at 10 p.m. EDT (9 p.m. CDT) on Science Channel. The episode explores liquids in the solar system and the ways researchers can learn about it — understanding the warm, wet environment of early Mars, probing the moonwide, ice-encrusted sea on Jupiter's moon Europa and more.
In the clip, exclusively released to Space.com today (May 16), researchers talk about designing a submarine to explore Titan: a moon of Saturn covered in seas of liquid methane and ethane. Without looking under those seas, the researchers said, how can we truly understand that moon?
"That first picture from anybody's submarine on the surface of a sea on another planet in our solar system changes the world," Michael Paul, director of Space Systems at Penn State University, said in the clip. "That's something that none of us have ever seen before — that's true discovery. That is why we do any of this. And that would be awesome. That first picture alone would make this entire mission worth it."
The researchers consider what they could find in those alien depths, searching for information and hoping for life — but not as we know it.
