Vijf ongelofelijke dingen die we dankzij New Horizons weten over Pluto
Een jaar geleden scheerde Nasa-ruimtesonde New Horizons langs Pluto en voorzag die ons van de eerste gedetailleerde beelden van de ijzige dwergplaneet en zijn manen. Wat hebben die unieke beelden ons het afgelopen jaar geleerd?
Data van het ruimtevaartuig komen nog steeds binnen. De laatste ‘lading’ zal de aarde pas aan het eind van het jaar bereiken. De eerste resultaten laten al zien dat de planeet verbazingwekkend anders in elkaar steekt dan we hadden verwacht. Hier volgen vijf nieuwe inzichten over Pluto en zijn manen.
Wazige lagen

Toen New Horizons aan Pluto voorbij vloog, wierp het ruimtevaartuig een blik naar achteren. Vanuit dat perspectief verlichtte het zonlicht de wazige, verrassend hoge atmosfeer van de dwergster.
‘Het gigantische verticale bereik van de waas, en de laagvorming, waren twee dingen die we niet hadden verwacht’, zegt Randy Gladstone van het Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio in Texas. De waas strekt zich uit over meerdere honderden kilometers de lucht in en bevat tientallen verschillende banden. Er zijn zelfs aanwijzingen voor de aanwezigheid van afzonderlijke wolken.
De lagen zijn relatief stabiel, zegt Gladstone. Die stabiliteit zou te danken kunnen zijn aan de structuur van de deeltjes waaruit de waas bestaat. Men denkt dat het samengeklonterde stofkluitjes zijn, gevormd als een bosje druiven. Zo zijn ze ‘pluiziger’ dan losse stofdeeltjes, wat mogelijk zou verklaren waarom ze langer blijven zweven.
Chaotisch terrein

Voor de vlucht waren onderzoekers niet zeker over hoe het oppervlak van Pluto eruit zag. Sommigen dachten dat het er uit zou kunnen zien als het oppervlak van een biljartbal, zegt Hal Weaver van de Johns Hopkins-universiteit in Baltimore in de VS.
‘Een van de dingen die ik graag wilde doen, was Pluto transformeren van een kleine, pixelige ‘blob’, naar een echte planeet met complexiteit en diversiteit’, zegt Weaver. ‘Wat we zagen, was boven onze verwachtingen.’
Pluto’s chaotische terrein is veel gevarieerder dan verwacht. Er zijn vulkanen die ijzig water spuwen in plaats van lava, maar ook uitgestrekte, relatief gladde vlakten, zoals de informeel gedoopte ‘Sputnik Planum’, omringd door bergen van ijs.
Jong oppervlak

Het gladde oppervlak van de Sputnik Planum – het linkerdeel van Pluto’s beroemde ‘hart’, de zogeheten Tombaugh Regio – suggereert dat het relatief jong en actief is, in ieder geval op een planetaire tijdschaal. Onderzoekers schatten dat het gebied minder dan 100 miljoen jaar oud is, en misschien nog veel ‘jonger’ dan dat.
De Sputnik Planum wordt gedomineerd door kolkende, veelhoekige vormen van bevroren stikstof. Ze zijn elk ongeveer twintig kilometer in doorsnee en worden gedreven door de hitte van de planeetkern. Het is het resultaat van de oppervlaktetemperatuur van Pluto, met -233 graden Celsius (40 Kelvin) de optimale omstandigheid voor stikstof om zowel vast, vloeibaar als gasvormig aanwezig te kunnen zijn, zegt Weaver.

Niet alleen Pluto zelf, maar ook de manen werden door New Horizons onder de loep genomen. Op foto’s van Charon, Pluto’s grootste maan, is een gigantische kloof te zien die zich uitstrekt over de evenaar.
Volgens de sonde is de kloof minstens 1800 kilometer lang en 7,5 kilometer diep. ‘De Grand Canyon is er niks bij’, zegt Weaver. Onderzoekers denken dat de kloof ontstaan is toen een oceaan onder de oppervlakte van Charon bevroor en uitzette, vlak na het ontstaan van de maan.
In een botsing geboren

We wisten weinig over Pluto’s andere manen – Nix, Hydra, Styx en Kerberos – voor New Horizons het systeem langs vloog. Afbeeldingen van de kleine hemellichamen gemaakt door de Hubble-ruimtetelescoop leken op kleine lichtgevende speldenknopjes, zegt Weaver.
‘We hadden geen idee hoe groot ze waren, of hoe reflectief hun oppervlak was’, zegt hij. ‘Maar dankzij New Horizons weten we dat nu wel.’
De data laat zien dat de manen veel helderder zijn dan andere, typische objecten in de Kuipergordel, het buitenste gebied van ons zonnestelsel waar Pluto zich in bevindt. Het doet vermoeden dat de manen voornamelijk bestaan uit ijs en dat ze waarschijnlijk ontstaan zijn in dezelfde botsing die ook Pluto en Charon vormde. De manen werden dus niet pas na het ontstaan van de dwergplaneet aangetrokken.

New Horizons is Pluto al meer meer dan 400 miljoen kilometer gepasseerd, maar hiermee is de taak van het ruimtevaartuig nog niet voltooid. Nasa kondigde eerder deze maand aan dat het vaartuig op 1 januari 2019 ook voorbij een ander hemellichaam in de Kuipergordel zal vliegen.
Het nieuws van de officiële goedkeuring van de verlenging van de missie was een leuk verjaardagscadeau, zegt Gladstone. Voor nu zal het team verder gaan met het analyseren en interpreteren van de data die het ruimtevaartuig al verzameld heeft. Dat is een taak die mogelijk meer tijd in beslag neemt dan de rest van de missie, zegt hij. ‘Ik denk dat studenten hier nog decennia mee bezig zullen zijn.’

A volcano outside Rome, long thought extinct, is rumbling to life. But don't panic: The volcano isn't likely to blow its top for at least another 1,000 years.
Colli Albani is a volcanic complex of hills located 19 miles (30 kilometers) from the center of Rome. There are no historical records of eruptions from Colli Albani, so it was long thought to be extinct, according to the American Geophysical Union (AGU). Now, researchers have reported in the journal Geophysical Research Letters that Colli Albani just doesn't erupt that often. In fact, it enters an eruptive phase every 31,000 years or so.
A team of researchers, led by volcanologist Fabrizio Marra of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome, used ground-based observations of rising land, earthquake swarms and steam vents alongside satellite data to track Colli Albani's recent activity. An analysis of rocks from the volcano revealed a history of past eruptions, the most recent of which occurred 36,000 years ago. [The 11 Biggest Volcanic Eruptions in History]
Now, the ground underneath the volcano is inflating, rising at a maximum of about 0.08 inches (2 millimeters) per year in areas where steam vents are emerging, Marra and his colleagues reported. During the past 200,000 years, the area has risen by about 164 feet (50 meters) in elevation, they found. This suggests that magma is entering fractures beneath the volcano, they said.
The reason for the change has to do with the subsurface geology of Colli Albani, Marra told the AGU. Until about 2,000 years ago, the surrounding land held together a fracture under the volcano, preventing magma from bubbling to the surface. More recently, however, the subsurface stresses have changed so that the rock on one side of the fracture is moving and sliding against the rock on the other side, according to the AGU.
So far, these changes have manifested in a swarm of earthquakes around Rome that lasted from 1991 to 1995. Another sign was a small fumarole, or steam vent, that appeared in a road near Rome's Fiumicino airport in 2013.
Given its 31,000-year cycle, Colli Albani is arguably overdue for an eruption, but the volcano won't unexpectedly blow its top, Marra told the AGU. It likely won't build up enough pressure for an explosive eruption for at least 1,000 years. Even then, Romans can expect plenty of warning, Marra said, as an explosive eruption would be preceded by initial stages of moderate volcanic activity.

SpaceX recently sent a host of material to the International Space Station. After the successful launch, their rocket nailed its landing (again). Now, astronauts are preparing to unpack a host of interesting tech.
At 12:45 a.m. EDT on July 18, the sky lit up over the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida with the launch of the SpaceX Commercial Resupply Services-9 (CRS-9) mission. The Dragon cargo craft flew through the clouds toward the ISS on a two-stage Falcon 9 rocket. Dragon will arrive at the ISS at about 7 a.m. EDT Wednesday morning (July 20), according to NASA officials.
Approximately 2.5 minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9’s first stage separated and performed a series of engine burns to head back to Cape Canaveral. At 12:53 a.m. EDT, the booster successfully touched down just miles south of the launch pad, as intended. A sonic boom could be heard as the craft reentered the atmosphere, followed by cheering from everyone watching from the causeway.
SpaceX pulled off its fifth rocket landing in the last seven months. But it won’t be hanging out on the launch pad or the Vehicle Assembly Building for long. At the post launch briefing, Hans Koenigsmann, SpaceX’s vice president of mission assurance, said “from what I can see, [the rocket is] in excellent shape, and probably pretty soon ready to fly again.”
Nailing the landing (quite flawlessly, we might add) was not the only great thing about this launch, though. Astronauts aboard the ISS can expect almost 5,000 pounds of new hardware and experiments in this delivery.
So what exactly did NASA put in their latest care package?
DNA Sequencing in Your Pocket

Perhaps one of the most exciting items has to do with our very own DNA. Before this handy tool, DNA testing aboard the space station required collecting samples and returning them to Earth. NASA’s Biomolecule Sequencer Investigationwill test a new device that will allow DNA sequencing in space for the first time. The samples in the first test will be DNA from a virus, a bacteria, and a mouse. When NASA microbiologist, Sarah Castro-Wallace, showed it off pre-launch on NASA TV, she pulled it right out of her pocket.
The miniature device has the potential to do more than just sequence DNA.
It can also sequence other biomolecules such as RNA and proteins. It can even identify microbes, diagnose diseases, and evaluate crew member health, and even (someday) help detect DNA-based life elsewhere in the solar system. One of the best parts? It’s powered by a tablet that’s already on the ISS via USB connection.
Oh, and it was built all in 10 months and is commercially available off the shelf.

A NEW STANDARD: THE INTERNATIONAL DOCKING ADAPTER
The first of two international docking adapters (IDAs) being sent to the ISS will allow commercial spacecraft to dock to the station when transporting astronauts in the near future. Part of the Commercial Crew Program, this 1,000-pound metallic ring represents the first on-orbit element built to the docking measurements that are standardized for all the spacecraft builders across the world.
The first users are expected to be the Boeing Strainer and the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, which are both now in development.

One of the best parts about the IDA is that it is designed to work with automated guidance systems on arriving spacecraft, so they can safely dock to the station with little, if any, crew intervention. The station’s robotic arm will retrieve the IDA from the unpressurized trunk of the Dragon. Spacewalkers will complete the installation of the adapter in August.
DOES THE ISS HAVE AC?

The goal of the Phase Change Material Heat Exchanger (PCM HX) project is to regulate internal spacecraft temperatures. Inside this device, NASA is testing the freezing and thawing of material in an attempt to regulate temperature on a spacecraft. This phase-changing material (which has the consistency of a mineral oil) can be melted and solidified at certain high heat temperatures to store and release large amounts of energy.
Rubik Sheth, project manager, explains how the goal is to study thermal control around the Moon:
“We’re going back to the Moon. We’re going to go back out of LEO (low Earth orbit), and we’re going to try to do things that we haven’t done in a very long time.”
The focus of the investigation is NASA’s multipurpose crew vehicle, the Orion that’s headed toward the Moon. The Moon provides a very harsh environment. It’s of upmost importance to make sure the astronauts are safe and comfortable.
YOUR SKELETON IN MICROGRAVITY
OsteoOmicsis an experiment that will investigate the molecular mechanisms that dictate bone loss in microgravity. It does this by studying osteoblasts, which form bones, and osteoclasts, which dissolve bone. New ground-based studies are using magnetic levitation equipment to simulate gravity-related changes. Bruce Hammer, professor at the University of Minnesota Center for Magnetic Resonance Research, showed a video showing bugs (ants, spiders, and a grasshopper) navigating this faux microgravity environment.
This experiment hopes to validate whether this method accurately simulates the free-fall conditions of microgravity. Results from the study could lead to better preventative care or therapeutic treatments for people suffering bone loss on Earth and in space.
HUMAN HEART CELLS ON THE ISS
The goals of the Effects of Microgravity on Stem Cell-Derived HeartCells investigation include increasing the understanding of the effects of microgravity on heart function, the improvement of heart disease modeling capabilities, and the development of appropriate methods for cell therapy for people with heart disease on Earth.
Pretty much every system is affected by the microgravity environment. But we know very little about what happens at a tissue cellular molecular level, says Peter Lee, assistant professor of surgery at Ohio State University.
Using induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs) means that the research team can produce heart cells without performing surgery on a patient. The team will be sending the cells to the ISS for one month. Astronauts will be looking at changes in gene expression, beating rate, and cell shape and size.

It may still be 10 years before Russia’s sixth-generation fighter jet will be ready but officials say that the aircraft will have its own swarm of drones flying beside it.
Vladimir Mikheev, an adviser to the deputy head of Radioelectronic Technologies Concern — part of the Moscow-based state corporation Rostec — said the fighter jet will be unveiled in 2025.
With a supersonic speed of about 4-5 Mach, the unmanned aircraft will be able to enter near space and reenter the atmosphere in a designated spot, hundreds of kilometers away from the place of the original entry.

YOU CAN’T FLY WITH US
Pilots will be assigned a drone to command depending on their rank. “Depending on the status, he [the pilot] is given several subordinate drones,” Mikheev says. “They, in their turn, understand –– they must protect, for example, lieutenant Petrov. But if colonel Ivanov is in the cockpit, the number of subordinate drones should be more, and so forth.”
The drone aircraft will also be equipped with high-frequency electromagnetic cannons — too powerful for manned aircraft to operate without hurting pilots — designed to knock out enemy radio signals from a distance of about six miles.
MEANWHILE, IN THE U.S.
The U.S., in parallel, is also working on sixth-generation fighter designs after the introduction of the Lockheed Martin Corp.-made F-22 Raptor and F-35 Joint Strike Fighter fifth-generation aircraft, the latter of which is still in development.
But rather than create a single sixth-gen platform capable of overcoming today’s threats — cyber, electronic attack, anti-satellite, surface-to-air — the Air Force has signaled an interest in trying to develop new weapons such as directed energy and hypersonic missiles that can be installed on updated aircraft.
Using a specialized capture mechanism, the European Space Agency (ESA) plans to lasso a large, abandoned satellite drifting through space and pull it down to burn up in the atmosphere.
The e.DeOrbit mission, part of the agency's Clean Space Initiative, is designed to capture an ESA-owned satellite that is in low orbit around the Earth but no longer functioning. If all goes according to plan, a capture mechanism — such as a robotic arm, net or harpoon — will latch on to the target in 2023 and bring it down to where it can safely burn up in Earth's atmosphere, ESA officials said in a statement. However, reeling in such a large piece of space junk is no easy feat. There are several challenges that ESA scientists will have to tackle: They will have to identify the fast-moving target, find a safe and secure way to chase it down and capture it, and synchronize orbital paths with the satellite to bring it down into Earth's atmosphere in a controlled manner. "While the concept is straightforward, the implementation is not — e.DeOrbit will be like nothing ESA has ever attempted before," Robin Biesbroek, ESA's study manager, said in the statement. "The chaser satellite requires extremely sophisticated guidance, navigation and control to synchronize motion and then capture its target, guided, in turn, by advanced image processing, blending inputs from optical and multispectral cameras as well as 'laser radar' lidar to derive a precise, reliable sense of the target and its motion."
The ESA plans to launch a satellite in 2023 to capture abandoned space junk drifting through space and bring it down to where it can safely burn up in Earth's atmosphere.
Earlier this year, ESA demonstrated the concept of capturing an abandoned satellite by shooting a net at a drone.
"In addition, e.DeOrbit needs a reliable method of capturing its target," Biesbroek said. "We are now looking at a net, harpoon or gripper, as well as advanced robotics to secure the two satellites together. Finally, the satellite also requires a very high level of autonomy, because continuous real-time control from the ground will not be practical, especially during the crucial capture phase."
Initiatives to capture and remove dead, abandoned space junk become even more essential as the number of space launches per year continues to increase. The ESA video said a 1-cm (2.5 inches) piece of space debris could "strike a working satellite with the force of a hand grenade," which, in turn, could cause a subsequent cascade of collisions and harm any new satellites being launched into space.

An unmanned Russian cargo ship launched to the International Space Station on Saturday (July 16) on a mission to deliver three tons of food, supplies and fuel to the orbiting laboratory.
The resupply ship Progress 64 launched into orbit atop a Soyuz rocket at 5:41 p.m. EDT (2141 GMT) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, where the local time was early Sunday morning. Progress 64 will journey for two days in space before arriving at the space station on Monday night (July 18). You can watch Progress 64 arrive at the space station here, courtesy of a NASA webcast. Docking is set for 8:22 p.m. EDT (0022 July 19 GMT).
SpaceX's Dragon will launch to the space station at 12:45 a.m. EDT (0445 GMT) on Monday from a pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida. It will arrive at the orbiting lab early on Wednesday (July 20), with NASA webcasting the subsequent docking.
Traditionally, Russia’s Progress launches are welcomed by the astronauts because they carry a few items that astronauts miss on Earth, such as fresh fruit. Since the International Space Station does not have a fridge to store food, most of the things astronauts eat must be shelf-stable (like tortillas) or rehydrated.
The launches also replenish the space station's stock of freeze-dried food and coffee, and provide supplies for the space station's toilets, filters and other areas that might need replacing. A Progress spacecraft typically remains at the space station for about six months and departs with a load of trash of up to three tons. The spacecraft then burns up in the Earth's atmosphere.
The Progress line of disposable automated spacecraft have flown more than 140 flights in three decades. Only two of these spacecraft have not reached their destination, including one Progress flight in 2015. That flight reached Earth orbit, but spun out of control before flying on to the space station. It eventually burned up in the atmosphere.
Progress is one of a small fleet that supplies the International Space Station. The other main providers are two private companies — SpaceX (which flies Dragon spacecraft) and Orbital ATK (which flies Cygnus spacecraft) — as well as Japan's H-2 Transfer Vehicles. The European Space Agency also flew five supply missions to the space station using its own Automated Transfer Vehicle.
In one of Carl Sagan's last books, he noted that astronomy has brought humanity to a series of "great demotions." Simply put: When we first observed the night sky, we thought the Earth was in the center of the universe. Over time, as he described in Pale Blue Dot, we tried out other theories as the criteria fit: Maybe the sun is at the center of the universe? Perhaps we're in an important part of the galaxy?
We now know the Earth is in the suburbs of the Milky Way, and our solar system is only special because we live in it, but this series of demotions shows us one thing: it's easy to project our image on to the universe. This is especially true when searching for life. Because there is only one case of life as we know it -- life on Earth -- it's easiest to look for life like ours. But in reality our kind of life may not be the most common type to look for after all.
A new paper in Astrobiology is asking the astronomy community to help the SETI Institute. (SETI stands for "Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.") With more data on exoplanets coming in from the Kepler space telescope, and 50 years of space and SETI observations behind us, the hope is new tools can emerge to improve the search for life.
"A key concept is the one of cohabitation of life and environment ... Each planet is a unique planetary experiment, and if we are starting to model these environments, then we can start to figure out what kind of diversity is out there," author Nathalie Cabrol, the SETI Institute's senior research scientist and director of the Carl Sagan Center, told Discovery News.
One example she suggests in her paper is looking for an element that is in disequilibrium in a planet's atmosphere. (In other words, if scientists see a lot of silicon in an atmosphere that physics predicts would have little, perhaps that could show silicon-based life there.) The advantage is the aliens wouldn't necessarily have to be sending out signals for us to find, she added.
A recent blog post from the SETI Institute's Seth Shostak highlighted this fact for Earth, pointing out our oxygen signature has broadcast life for more than two billion years.
Indeed, much of astrobiology itself is built on assumptions. Scientists commonly speak of a "habitable zone" for planets, based mostly on where Earth is located in our own solar system. Exoplanet biology is also compared with our own, such as when instruments for Mars are tested here based on their abilities to find Earth microbes.
Radio and optical searches, she added, are still the best tool we know of for searching given our known physics of the universe. But she does point out in the paper that the SETI Institute has been focused on the endpoint of the famous Drake equation -- how many communicating civilizations there are -- rather than "trying to understand or quantify the processes taking place within each of the factors's [for life] that lead to the next."
Even Frank Drake himself, she added, said his equation was not aimed to look for microbes or non-communicating species.
Cabrol said the goal of her paper -- which she emphasized is just a single data point, open to discussion and dispute from other astronomers -- is not to necessarily say these ideas are wrong. Instead, her hope is that after the SETI Institute organizes a workshop next year to explore these issues, that astronomers may have a better idea about where to point their telescopes.

Il y a quelques mois de cela, Futura-Sciences vous parlait d’une course de drones un peu particulière, la Brain-Drone Race. Organisée par des chercheurs et étudiants de l’université de Floride (États-Unis), elle opposait 16 concurrents munis de casques EEG (électroencéphalographie) détectant l’activité électrique du cerveau ; chacun devait piloter un drone jusqu’à une ligne d’arrivée. Grâce à une interface neuronale, le casque EEG détectait l’activité électrique du cerveau liée à la pensée d’une action et transmettait la commande à l’appareil par liaison sans fil. Assurément impressionnant. Pourtant, il y a encore plus fort…
À l’université d’État de l’Arizona, un chercheur s’attelle en effet à contrôler non pas un, mais plusieurs drones en même temps. Panagiotis Artemiadis travaille depuis 2009 sur les interfaces cerveau-machine. Il y a quelques années, il a commencé à s’intéresser à la possibilité de contrôler plusieurs appareils en même temps. Une idée qui a beaucoup intéressé la Darpa, l’agence de recherche et développement de l’armée américaine, laquelle a décidé de financer ces travaux.
Techniquement, le dispositif est identique à celui utilisé pour la Brain-Drone Race, avec un casque EEG doté de 128 électrodes qui enregistre l’activité cérébrale correspondant à la pensée d’une action. Un ordinateur acquiert ce signal tandis qu’un autre le traite avant d’envoyer la commande finale au drone via une liaison sans fil Bluetooth. La technologie repose sur une cartographie de l’activité cérébrale, afin de savoir exactement quelle zone du cerveau correspond à quelsmouvements. L’interface neuronale peut alors détecter la zone en question et transmettre la commande afférente.
L’une des pistes envisagées pour exploiter cette interface neuronale est de créer des groupes hybrides de drones et de robots terrestres pour des missions de sauvetage.
Un système développé avec des pilotes de chasse de l’US Air Force
Ce qu’a découvert Panagiotis Artemiadis, c’est que le cerveau est capable de s’adapter pour gérer les comportements collectifs d’objets qui sont dissociés du corps. « Nous savons dans quelle partie du cerveau nous pouvons enregistrer ces signaux et ce qu’il faut y chercher pour décoder ces comportements collectifs pour des véhicules aériens et des groupes de robots », explique le chercheur. Les travaux ont été menés en collaboration avec des pilotes de chasse de l’US AirForce.
À l’heure actuelle, un opérateur peut ordonner à un groupe de drones ou de véhicules terrestres de se déplacer dans une certaine direction, de s’éparpiller ou encore de tourner autour d’une cible spécifique. Le dispositif est en revanche très exigeant. Les pilotes ne doivent pas relâcher leur concentration un instant car la fatigue, le stress et même la faim ont une incidence. De plus, comme chaque utilisateur est différent, l’interface neuronale doit être calibrée individuellement et ce calibrage doit se faire à chaque nouvelle session.
Pour le moment, le système permet de contrôler trois à quatre drones mais le professeur Artemiadis et son équipe ont l’ambition d’arriver rapidement à une vingtaine d’appareils, et même ensuite une centaine. Le second objectif est de travailler sur une configuration hybride dans laquelle des drones et des véhicules terrestres seront coordonnés via une interface neuronale pour accomplir certaines tâches. « On peut commander aux quadricoptères de venir se poser sur des engins terrestres pour se recharger ou bien pour remettre des informations que l’on ne veut pas transmettre par une connexion sans fil », précise le chercheur.
L’un des scénarios évoqués est d’utiliser cette combinaison pour des missions de secours mais l’intérêt de la Darpa n’est évidemment pas anodin dans la perspective d’un usage militaire.

Romanian general reveals an intriguing story about reptilian beings seen right outside a public area.
There’s a conspiracy theory claiming that important political figures worldwide are nothing but disguised reptilian humanoids that secretly govern the unsuspecting human civilization. These allegations are based on several discoveries of huge underground cities in various regions of the globe, but also on local legends, cave paintings and recently an important statement coming from a high rank official.
Retired General Emil Strainu, a key figure of the Romanian army, author of a few interesting books relating facts about humanity’s “forbidden history,” spoke about a bizarre sighting involving a reptilian-like being present in a public area. He has widely discussed about this unusual meeting at relevant esoteric events throughout the world.
General Strainu strongly believes in the existence of reptilian extraterrestrials hidden in huge underground metropolises, but doesn’t want to reveal more on this topic. “I’m not going any further on this subject!” said the General.
To make his unusual story known, he contacted Aryan Hava, author of “Inuaki, the reptilian within me,” a two volumes work illustrating known and unknown facts about reptilians. The story describes a peculiar event lived by a good friend of his, who encountered two reptilian creatures near the Retezat Mountains in the Carpathians.
Driving back from a short vacation, the man decided to pull over a nearby gas station to refuel. As he got out of the car, he saw a khaki Hummer with dark windows parked right near the gas station with the engine running. He found this strange, as it was between 5:00 and 5:10 AM, and no one was on the road at that time of day and near the wilderness of the Carpathians.
The man paid for the gas and as he walked back to his SUV, he noticed the front door of the Hammer was opened, moment when he peaked inside out of curiosity and saw a reptilian being covered in green scales and nothing on except a pair of military boots. After the frightening appearance, the man rushed to his car, but not before having another glance at the unusual creature. They made eye contact for a brief moment before he stepped on the gas and ran out of there.
His friend requested to remain anonymous since he’s also an influential politician involved in the Romanian state’s affairs. After the incident, he went directly to General Strainu and spat out what had just happened. According to the general, the man was extremely credible when he narrated the story. His eyes looked as if telling the truth and he gave many details and possible meanings or misinterpretations. The man was certain of what he saw.
As for General Strainu, we can only trust his word, as an ex-official who had access to numerous classified documents involving out of place archaeological discoveries and events suppressed by the communist state in the past.
Among these imposing achievements, he is Advisor of the Romanian Parliament on unconventional issues and asymmetrical threats, Director of the Special Situation and Research Center on UFOs and Psihotronics, Founder of the Association for the Study of Unidentified Aerospace Phenomenon, and at least as important as those mentioned, author of several esoteric books.
General Emil Strainu remains a trusted source, and his disclosures are well-received in the UFO community. He advocates for people knowing the truth about the real history and about how extraterrestrials govern our species from the shadows. He doesn’t go much into details except for the paranormal seminars where he feels free to disclose even more. His reserved attitude adds even more to the credibility of the story.
Are reptilian extraterrestrials among us? If this is really the case, we are going to find out in the future when they’ll reveal themselves to us once more.

Contactee Alex Collier claims our Moon is actually the interstellar transport ship that was brought here from a distant solar system. It contained an experiment run by the grey aliens and their reptilian masters: our genetically-engineered ancestors.
Fluke or not, most Sci-Fi writers proved to be quite visionary, if not somewhat prophetic. The book “Letters from Andromeda”, the brainchild of Job Robinson and Alex Collier describes a telepathic conversation with alien beings originating from the Andromeda Galaxy. An ancient being called Moraney from the constellation Zenetae, transmitted important information to Collier, questioning the lies spread in our history books.
The Andromedan exposed the deceitful way humans are being ruled, the lies that govern our every day lives without our consent or even awareness. We are being told nothing about the real concerns of real life, much less about what is actually happening in our Solar System.
Moraney’s biggest revelation pertained to mankind’s true history and a secret base on the Moon. Earth’s satellite carried a vital role in our genesis, but far from any way we have been taught so. The Moon was brought from the constellation Ursa Minor – 432 light years from Earth – to serve as a transport ship for reptilians, human-reptilian hybrids and the first generation of human ancestors to descend on Earth. Our moon made its way in our galaxy dragged by an asteroid that is believed to cross our galaxy every 25,000 Earth years.
THIS IS HOW COLLIER DESCRIBED ANDROMEDANS
Moraney also revealed that our Moon once orbited the 17th planet of the Chowta star system, home of the Andromedans. What we see today of the Moon, are in fact the remains of a 6.2 billion years-old cosmic vestige called Maldek, a reminder of the ancient war between the tyrannical Grey aliens of the Orion Empire.
According to the information passed on to Collier by the Andromedan, we are here because we were brought here by an ancient extraterrestrial civilization surpassing our Sun in age.
To sustain this daring theory, we need to address speculation. Rumors have it that on the surface of the Moon, lunar missions detected the presence of some unknown chemical compounds, and that discovery was entirely covered up. Collier had his restraints on this matter, but Moraney’s telepathic communication confirmed all doubts:
“The Moon is hollow. It contains huge underground facilities built by E.T.’s and later humans from Earth. There are seven openings into the Moon’s crust, and the underground bases. Conservative scientists have wondered why so many craters seem so shallow, despite their size. The Andromedans say, it’s because much of the surface was built on top of a metallic shell of a circular space crest; or “A War Carrier”, as the Andromedans describe it.”
The craters on the Moon are a solid hint to a trained eye, for their depth does not match a straying cosmic body, but a uniform shape pressing against the layers of lunar dust and rock, but since we are alone in this galaxy, who is responsible for the so called craters? The answer comes from the Andromedan, who tells of cities and spacecraft hangars located on the far side of the Moon, that were destroyed in a war over 113,000 years ago, leaving behind the marks visible from our planet.
The Greys guided the first exploration mission of these ruins back in 1950, when a team of NSA (not NASA!) astronauts allegedly delved into a lunar underground facility the size of New York, right underneath the Jules Verne crater. Inside the facility they found the remnants of a violent battle, seeing pieces of reptilian bodies scattered all over the place.
“When the Apollo astronauts landed on the moon, the World Order had been there for some time,” Collier wrote. This knowledge and technology was withheld from the lower levels of NASA and our military. NASA has been used as a blind to keep people from truly knowing what was going on there. The astronauts were silenced under threats and remain so today.”
Since then, the World Government maintained a lunar population program starting with 36,000 handpicked people. The colony is estimated to reach 600,000 occupants in the near future.
The leaders of the entire operation are the Greys, but they rarely interfere directly, but rather carry their messages through a group called the Black Monks. Originally human, the Black Monks have been radically modified to serve the Greys’ needs and can “no longer be considered Earth humans.”
The step below in the hierarchy are a group called the Blue Moon, who serve the Black Monks, comprised of American, British, Russian and French representatives. These groups operate and control the moon bases and under their command are two organizations: Alpha One and Alpha Two. Collier had reasons to believe that Alpha One was assigned with gathering resources on Earth and keeping the population unsuspecting.
The Andromedan Moraney told Collier that Alpha Two is actually MJ-12, the infamous organization tasked with recovering and investigating alien craft. If this is true, the organization we believe to be in charge of such covert projects is actually at the bottom of the ladder, and said ladder runs much higher than we previously thought.
To this day, Collier’s allegations have yet to be proven but completely rejecting their implications would be unwise.
The far side of the Moon is forever hidden from view and even if a number of alien bases were located there, we wouldn’t be able to spot them from Earth. But Alex Collier is pretty adamant about his enlightenment and the forbidden knowledge he was blessed with by the Andromedans.

PARANORMAL investigators are calling for DNA tests to be carried out on a bizarre corpse that some believe could be the world's first alien dead body on Earth.

With its tiny winged frame and reptilian face, the "dead alien" has all the hallmarks of an elaborate hoax, but some alien investigators believe it could be the real deal.
Author Brian Foerster claims to have found the unusual winged small humanoid corpse in a specimin jar in an office in Mexico earlier this year.
Claims are now being made in a video clip online that X-rays carried out on the "dead body" have shown a skeletal structure inside, leading to calls for further analysis, including DNA tests.
But there have been claims the clip entitled "What is this weird creature with wings in this jar?" could be an online money spinner, because the clip promotes a website where viewers have to pay to see the full documentary.
In a promotional blurb for the video clip, Mr Foerster wrote: "I saw this very odd animal in an office in Mexico City in January of 2016.
"As a trained biologist I have a hard time thinking it is fake.
“What do you think?"
In the clip, which appear to be highlights from a longer documentary, LA Marzulli, an author and filmmaker, is seen investigating the discovery.
He meets with Mexican paranormal journalist Jamie Maussan, who says: "It is a hybrid, and that is something very important, because i believe these are confidential experiments, and why I don't know.
"But we have a physical body. We can analyse that physical body and prove that something, an intelligence, is behind these experiments."

7. The Silla
The Silla Kingdom was one of the longest-standing royal dynasties ever. It ruled most of the Korean Peninsula between 57 B.C. and A.D. 935, but left few burials behind for archaeologists to study.
One recent Silla discovery gave researchers a little insight, however. The intact bones of a woman who lived to be in her late 30s was found in 2013 near the historic capital of the Silla (Gyeongju). An analysis of the woman's bones revealed that she was likely a vegetarian who ate a diet heavy in rice, potatoes or wheat. She also had an elongated skull.
Silla was founded by the monarch Bak Hyeokgeose. Legend held that he was hatched from a mysterious egg in the forest and married a queen born from the ribs of a dragon. Over time, the Silla culture developed into a centralized, hierarchical society with a wealthy aristocratic class. Though human remains from the Silla people are rare, archaeologists have unearthed a variety of luxurious goods made by this culture, from a gold-and-garnet dagger to a cast-iron Buddha to jade jewelry, among other examples held at the Gyeongju National Museum in South Korea. 6. The Indus
The Indus is the largest-known ancient urban culture, with the people's land stretching from the Indus River in modern-day Pakistan to the Arabian Sea and the Ganges in India. The Indus civilization persisted for thousands of years, emerging around 3300 B.C. and declining by about 1600 B.C.
The Indus, also known as the Harappans, developed sewage and drainage systems for their cities, built impressive walls and granaries, and produced artifacts like pottery and glazed beads. They even had dental care: Scientistsfound 11 drilled molars from adults who lived between 7,500 to 9,000 years ago in the Indus Valley, according to a study published in 2006 in the journal Nature. A 2012 study suggested that climatic change weakened monsoonal rains and dried up much of the Harappan territory, forcing the civilization togradually disband and migrate to wetter climes.

5. The Sanxingdui
The Sanxingdui were a Bronze Age culture that thrived in what is now China's Sichuan Province. A farmer first discovered artifacts from the Sanxingdui in 1929; excavations in the area in 1986 revealed complex jade carvings and bronze sculptures 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall.
But who were the Sanxingdui? Despite the evidence of the culture's artistic abilities, no one really knows. They were prolific makers of painted bronze-and-gold-foil masks that some archaeologists believe may have represented gods or ancestors, according to the Sanxingdui Museum in China. The Sanxingdui site shows evidence of abandonment about 2,800 or 3,000 years ago, and another ancient city, Jinsha, discovered nearby, shows evidence that maybe the Sanxingdui moved there. In 2014, researchers at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union argued that at around this time, a major earthquake and landslide redirected the Minjiang River, which would have cut Sanxingdui off from water and forced a relocation.

4. The Nok
The mysterious and little-known Nok culture lasted from around 1000 B.C. to A.D. 300 in what is today northern Nigeria. Evidence of the Nok was discovered by chance during a tin-mining operation in 1943, according to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Miners uncovered a terra-cotta head, hinting at a rich sculptural tradition. Since then, other elaborate terra-cotta sculptures have emerged, including depictions of people wearing elaborate jewelry and carrying batons and flails — symbols of authority also seen in ancient Egyptian art, according to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Other sculptures show people with diseases such as elephantiasis, the Met said.
Contributing to the mystery surrounding the Nok, the artifacts have often been removed from their context without archaeological analysis. In 2012, the United States returned a cache of Nok figurines to Nigeria after they were stolen from Nigeria's national museum and smuggled into the U.S.

3. The Etruscans
The Etruscans had a thriving society in northern Italy from about 700 B.C. to about 500 B.C., when they began to be absorbed by the Roman Republic. They developed a unique written language and left behind luxurious family tombs, including one belonging to a prince that was first excavated in 2013.
Etruscan society was a theocracy, and their artifacts suggest that religious ritual was a part of daily life. The oldest depiction of childbirth in Western art — a goddess squatting to give birth — was found at the Etruscan sanctuary of Poggio Colla. At the same site, archaeologists found a 4-foot by 2-foot (1.2 by 0.6 meters) sandstone slab containing rare engravings in the Etruscanlanguage. Few examples of written Etruscan survive. Another Etruscan site, Poggio Civitate, was a square complex surrounding a courtyard. It was the largest building in the Mediterranean at its time, said archaeologists who haveexcavated more than 25,000 artifacts from the site.

2. The Land of Punt
Some cultures are known mostly through the records of other cultures. That's the case with the mysterious land of Punt, a kingdom somewhere in Africa that traded with the ancient Egyptians. The two kingdoms were exchanging goods from at least the 26th century B.C., during the reign of the pharaoh Khufu (the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza).
Strangely, no one really knows where Punt was located. The Egyptians left plenty of descriptions of the goods they got from Punt (gold, ebony, myrrh) and the seafaring expeditions they sent to the lost kingdom. However, the Egyptians are frustratingly mum on where all these voyages were headed. Scholars have suggested that Punt may have been in Arabia, or on the Horn of Africa, or maybe down the Nile River at the border of modern-day South Sudan and Ethiopia.

1. The Bell-Beaker Culture
You know a culture is obscure when archaeologists name it based on its artifacts alone. The Bell-Beaker culture made pottery vessels shaped like upside-down bells. The makers of these distinctive drinking cups lived across Europe between about 2800 B.C. and 1800 B.C. They also left behind copper artifacts and graves, including a cemetery of 154 graves located in the modern-day Czech Republic.
The Bell-Beakers were also responsible for some of the construction at Stonehenge, researchers have found: These people likely arranged the site's small bluestones, which originated in Wales.

MUFON, based in the USA, is the world's largest organisation dedicated to the investigation of alien abductions and UFO sightings and footage.
But the organisation has previously admitted that it does get inundated with hoax footage by pranksters and other individuals, which in some cases have to undergo initial assessment, tying up investigators.
The organisation accepts that this is one of the pitfalls of being an organisation dedicated to such research.
MUFON investigator Peter Davenport said on the website: "One of the greatest burdens that UFO investigators have to bear, in the course of their collecting and investigating sighting reports submitted by members of the public, is the deluge of apparently false reports and cases of mistaken identity that have to be waded through, and eliminated from, the stream of incoming data.
"What prompts people to create and submit bogus reports is unclear, save for the apparently widespread lack of self-discipline, and lack of concern for others, that seems all too common in mankind.
"However, the fact remains that such deception takes place constantly, and that it probably will continue in ufology, and elsewhere, until long after we have finally laid to rest the mystery of UFOs."

A FORMER government emergency expert made a detailed death bed confession of how he was shown inside an alien flying saucer at the top-secret Area 51 military base, it has been sensationally claim
Paul Hellyer, a former Canadian Minister of Defencem, said an unnamed former Canadian Chief of Emergency Measures revealed the astonishing story just before his death from a neurological illness.
Mr Hellyer, 92, revealed the claim to a panel of the world's top UFO and alien investigators and experts.
Speaking at the "Hearing on ET Disclosure” in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, Mr Hellyer explained that if he wanted to know about the workings of an alien space craft he would "ask the current chief of emergency measures".
Mr Hellyer, who became a UFO expert after claiming to have seen proof of alien visitations while in office, said: "The reason I know is I interviewed the previous one, who is now deceased, and he went Langley and the CIA asked if he would like to see one of these crafts.
"They flew him to Area 51 and let him go inside one and observe it and make notes and this sort of thing."
Conspiracy theorists have insisted for years Area 51 is where evidence of alien visitations of Earth are secretly held away from public view, including the remains of the alleged 1947 Roswell flying saucer crash.
Mr Hellyer added: "I guess, presumably, it was to be in better to cops with it if one crashed here and he was involved in trying to do something positive about it.
"But before he was allowed to go had to go he had to sign an oath of secrecy and not tell anyone, and during his life he didn't tell anyone including his wife, and an Air Force buddy phoned me and he was dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease and at that point he felt he should tell someone.

"I phoned him and he gave me a full report of what he saw and the whole idea of the inside of the craft and this sort of thing, and the fact he had been in a brief and many things, but now he felt he could tell somebody and he thought that would be a good one to tell."
Mr Hellyer was Canadian Minister of Defence from 1963 to 1968 and was deputy prime minister in 1969, but outed himself as a UFO believer 11 years ago.
He told a TV news interview that some of the aliens lived on one of Saturn's moons called Andromedia.
But sceptics claim he was deluded and to have debunked him because none of Saturn's 62 moons and satellites have this name.
Victor Viggiani, who chaired the hearing, said: "The more important and dramatic piece of evidence presented by Hellyer was a story he told about the day he was called to listen to some death bed confession.
"Paul did not provide dates for the events but he received a call from a man who said that the former head of emergency measures in Canada and that he has a story he wanted to get off his chest."
