Scientists Find a Quasicrystal from Outer Space in a Russian Meteorite
The phrase “quasicrystal from outer space” sounds like the title to a science fiction thriller with a New Age twist. Buta study published Thursdayin Scientific Reportsannounced that a bonafide quasicrystal has indeed been discovered within the grainy remains of a meteorite found in the Khatyrka region of the Russian far east, five years ago. The paper marks the first time that a type of quasicrystal has been identified in nature before it was created artificially in a lab.
You might be asking: That’s neat, but what the heck is a quasicrystal? An understandable question. First identified by material scientist Dan Shechtman in 1982—who won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery—quasicrystals are crystal-like arrangements of atoms that defy expectations of crystalline behavior with their “forbidden” rotational symmetries.
Regular crystal structures are periodically arranged in neatly fitted shapes like cubes (four-fold symmetry) or triangles (three-fold symmetry), but quasicrystals are arranged in non-periodic patterns such as pentagonal, five-fold symmetries.
Patricia Thiel, a chemistry and materials science expert based at Iowa State University, used this helpful analogy of tiling a floor to explain the unique properties of quasicrystals in this NPR article: “If you want to cover your bathroom floor, your tiles can be rectangles or triangles or squares or hexagons,” she said. “Any other simple shape won’t work, because it will leave a gap. In a quasicrystal, imagine atoms are at the points of the objects you’re using. What Danny [Shechtman] discovered is that pentagonal symmetry works.”
It should be impossible, but material science is full of surprises. While quasicrystals are most often studied via artificial synthesis in labs, the Khatyrka meteorite demonstrates that they can form naturally. Two previous quasicrystal forms have already been identified in the fragments of this outer space visitor, but both of those arrangements had been synthesized prior to their discovery in nature. However, the latest version features icosahedral symmetry, an exotic pattern featuring 60 points of rotational symmetry, somewhat like that of a soccer ball.

Paul Steinhardt, who serves as the Albert Einstein professor in science at Princeton University, was one of the authors of the new research. When I asked him why this one meteorite, which only survives as a few stray grains, seems to have such an abundance of quasicrystals, he told me there’s no simple answer.
“There are perhaps one or two other groups [of researchers] at most searching,” Steinhardt said. “Since we found an example, we have been focusing on understanding how this particular one formed since that will tell us something about the likelihood of finding others. But it is very very early times for these kinds of studies.”
“What is encouraging is that we have already found three different types of quasicrystals in the same meteorite, and this new one has a chemical composition that has never been seen for a quasicrystal,” he added. “That suggests there is more to be found, perhaps more quasicrystals that we did not know were possible before.”
Scientists have come a long way towards a better understanding of quasicrystals since their discovery some three decades ago, and they have found many practical applications for them in everything from frying pans to LED lights. But as Steinhardt emphasized, much of the field is still in its infancy, and there is much left to discover. Stay tuned.

In een meteoriet die is neergekomen in het uiterste oosten van Rusland is vijf jaar geleden een ‘onmogelijk’ kristal gevonden.
Het is voor het eerst dat een zogeheten quasikristal is aangetroffen in de natuur voordat het werd geproduceerd in een lab, zo blijkt uit een studie die is gepubliceerd in Scientific Reports.
Quasikristallen zijn materialen waarbij de kristalstructuur perfect is geordend, maar zich nooit herhaalt.
Onmogelijk
Bij quasikristallen komt bijvoorbeeld een vijf- of tienvoudige symmetrie voor, die bij gewone kristallen onmogelijk is.
Daarom werd lange tijd gedacht dat quasikristallen niet van nature konden voorkomen.
De structuur werd in 1982 ontdekt door Daniel Shechtman, die daarvoor in 2011 de Nobelprijs voor de Scheikunde ontving.
Verrassingen
Quasikristallen zouden onmogelijk moeten zijn, maar de wetenschap zit vol verrassingen.
De meteoriet die in Rusland is gevonden, laat zien dat ze wel degelijk in de natuur kunnen worden gevormd.
In de fragmenten van de ruimterots zijn eerder al twee andere quasikristallen vormen ontdekt, maar die waren allebei al geproduceerd in een laboratorium.
Veel te vroeg
Professor Paul Steinhardt van de Princeton-universiteit, die meeschreef aan het onderzoek, zegt niet te weten waarom deze ene meteoriet zoveel quasikristallen bevat.
“Sinds we dit ene quasikristal hebben gevonden, proberen we vooral te begrijpen hoe het zich heeft kunnen vormen,” zei hij.
“Dat zal ons iets vertellen over de kans dat we er meer gaan vinden,” voegde hij toe. “Maar het is nog veel te vroeg voor dit soort studies.”
Nog veel te ontdekken
Steinhardt zei al drie verschillende soorten quasikristallen te hebben gevonden in dezelfde meteoriet.
De nieuwste soort heeft een chemische samenstelling die nog nooit eerder is waargenomen.
“Dat wijst erop dat er nog meer kunnen worden gevonden, misschien meer quasikristallen waarvan we eerder dachten dat ze onmogelijk zouden zijn,” aldus de professor.
I dare say, most of you reading this will never have heard of Paul Ascough. There is nothing wrong with that but I can personally vouch for him. I have known Paul for over twenty years, and, unfortunately, we accidentally lost contact with each other for far too long. Earlier in 2016, I was extremely pleased to meet up with him again and even more pleased to discover he was just about to publish his first book. In order to discover who Paul Ascough is, and what his book is all about, I took time out to interview him, recently, the result of which is as follows.
Philip Mantle: Who is Paul Ascough? Tell us a bit about yourself?
Paul Ascough
Paul Ascough: I was born in West Yorkshire to a working class family. I left school with little in the way of qualifications. For some reason, I became interested in medicine and began my career as a student nurse, attending college and completing my training for a State Registered Nurse qualification. After a spell as an occupational nurse for the Coal Board, and working in the road laying team underground, I joined the Army as an infantry medic, rising to the dizzy heights of Staff Sergeant and seeing service in many countries.
Though serving as a medic throughout my career, I was a trained observer for the reconnaissance platoon teaching aircraft and vehicle recognition. I was fortunate to be stationed in Berlin during the cold war, crossing over to East Berlin at Checkpoint Charlie on several occasions, and observing the Russian helicopters observing us over the divide of the famous wall and the bizarre open spaces of no-mans land with its goon towers, mines and tank traps.
Finally, leaving the Army and joining the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, where I have remained as a Paramedic until my retirement.
Mantle: The Real Story is the title of your book. Could you give us an overview of the book, please?
Ascough: I have called my book The Real Story because this is the way I perceive our place in the world to be. It is my story of personal experiences with religion, the paranormal and UFOs, that have led me to the conclusions reached in the book, of what I believe the reality and the truth of what the real story actually is.
Mantle: How and when did you first become interested in the UFO phenomenon?
Ascough: I first became interested in UFOs at about 11 years old. I sat in the garden as it became dark, with my brother and my father, who was pointing out one of the major constellations to us, when 2 very bright pearly white UFOs came out of a bank of cloud in front of us then just stopped dead. They were completely still for not much more than a second, then were immediately moving away from us, no noise, nothing flashing, no vapour trail, just a little teardrop shaped tail, as they moved. Brilliant white light from them reflected on the clouds. The immediate feeling I got was that they hadn’t meant to be seen and that’s why they stopped and changed direction. It was from that moment that I wanted to know how they could be real, defying the laws of physics and blatantly on show to anyone who would have been looking.
Mantle: Has being in the military helped you in your research of the UFO phenomenon?
Ascough: Definitely, because you learn how to be a better and more objective observer, how to use landscapes, the background and the foreground, the weather, the cover, type and height of clouds, the wind as well as other atmospheric phenomenon. Then you learn about the different types of aircraft, the jets, turboprops, propellers and rotors, military, private, cargo and commercial, large and small, fast and slow, there are thousands of them.
Mantle: Whilst compiling your research for The Real Story did any one UFO sighting or close encounter case stand out to you and why?
Ascough: Good question. A high strangeness, close encounter abduction case I investigated for BUFORA in 1995 remains a highlight, simply because it was an opportunity to try and help a number of innocent and terrified individuals come to a better understanding and acceptance of what had happened to them.
Mantle: Do you have anything to say to the skeptics who say ufology is a complete waste of time?
Ascough: I do have something to say. Not to ridicule or belittle people who have been subjected to an experience of which they have had no control whatsoever. Witnesses and abductees will tell you that it’s unequivocal that what they have seen or experienced was so weird or bizarre that it could have been nothing other than alien. Almost without question, the abductees will say they wish they could turn back the clock to avoid what they experienced happening at all and that they previously had no interest in the UFO phenomenon. Many of these witnesses have a lot to lose by going public. And finally, why would thousands of people have a reason to lie, with nothing to gain? Many Ufologists give up a great deal of time, and sacrifice, to further our understanding of what is a very subjective and incredibly complex subject.
Mantle: What is the future in UFO research for you. More books, more research?
Ascough: Always more research, always more research. Having written this concise history of events in my life, maybe its time to expand on some of the theories, more stories and experiences, with more in depth explanations to help the reader gain a better understanding.
Mantle: In your opinion, how do we keep moving forward with UFO research?
Ascough: We can only keep moving forward by continuing research and placing as much evidence as we can into the public domain. There are some exceptional investigators and authors out there who will continue to educate us all. Fortunately, modern technology is on our side, and as more and more of the population are constantly carrying recording devices, then more and more evidence is slowly accumulating on the internet. This, combined with the world governments becoming more open, will, I hope, lead to a time in the not too distant future when we should see a general acceptance of the UFO phenomenon by everyone.
Mantle: Paul, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions and good look with your new book, The Real Story.

MYSTERIOUS VOID
For the first time ever, a team of astronomers from Rice University have mapped gases in three dark rings surrounding a young star almost 400 light years away, known as HD 163296. The rings are spaces in the star’s protoplanetary disk that are devoid of dust particles. This implies that planets are forming. However, while the two outer rings are consistent with having been cleared up by revolving new planets, the innermost ring holds a mystery.
The innermost ring contains a substantially higher concentration of three carbon monoxide isotopes than the outer two, suggesting that there’s no planet there. What’s clearing up that ring, however, is still unknown.
“The inner gap is mysterious,” lead astronomer Andrea Isella said. “Whatever is creating the structure is removing the dust but there’s still a lot of gas.”

“Of the material that formed this disk, about 1 percent is dust particles and 99 percent is gas,” Isella said. “So if you only see the dust, you cannot tell if a ring was formed by a planet or another phenomenon. In order to distinguish and really tell if there are planets or not, you need to see what the gas is doing, and in this study, for the first time, we can see both the dust and the gas.”
TO THE ALMA
So what could be causing the void if not a planet? While there are very few theories to explain the void, the researchers have already been granted access to the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to continue their study, which was published in Physical Review Letters. The ALMA is, after all, also dedicated to the study of protoplanetary systems. These efforts will help us understand how planets like the Earth formed.
“It means our topic is considered by the astronomical community to be one of its highest priorities,” he said. As a next step, the team will be studying the chemistry within the disk and rings, and will be surveying 20 more stars for comparison. The results are expected to be out by September next year.
Tools such as the ALMA and the upcoming mega-powered James Webb telescope are helping us better understand our universe. Knowing how its formed is key to understanding where we are going.
It’s been quite the year for skywatchers, and December is closing it out with one more incredible supermoon. Gracing the sky on Wednesday, December 15, it’s a special spectacle in the sky you surely won’t want to miss.
The December supermoon is also called the “Cold Moon,” and will occur just one day after the moon reaches perigee, which is the point in its orbit that it is closest to Earth. The Old Farmer’s Almanac notes that this month’s supermoon is called the “Full Cold Moon” because it is associated with the month the winter cold is mostly felt. Native American tribes also refer to this supermoon as the “Long Nights Moon” because it happens near the winter solstice, which is the night with the least amount of daylight.
December’s supermoon will be extra special, as it will coincide with the peak of the Geminid meteor shower, NASA said. The light from the supermoon will reduce the visibility of faint meteors five to ten-fold. Stargazers will be lucky enough to see a dozen Geminids per hour during its peak.
Along with the last supermoon of the year, there will be a meteor shower occurring on the exact same evening. This gives skywatchers the chance to double down on the breathtaking beauty that is Mother Nature.
The Geminid meteor shower will reach its peak around 2 am local time on December 15, right when the supermoon will be angled in the sky to provide a sensational glow to us earthlings. The Slooh Community Observatory will host a webcast for the Geminid shower that you can watch live on Space.com.
The only downside of the supermoon being out all night is that it has the chance to subdue the Geminids, which can generate up to 120 meteors per hour, five to ten fold, according to NASA. This means you may only get to see a dozen shooting stars per hour. But don’t let that sway you.
You can ensure visibility by steering clear of any areas illuminated by artificial lighting. Try to get to a naturally dark area to get the best of the night show’s shooting stars. It’s also suggested that you give your eyes approximately 20 minutes to adjust to the dark skies and focus on the stars above.
“You need no special equipment – just a dark, open sky and maybe a sleeping bag to keep warm. Plan to sprawl back in a hammock, lawn chair, pile of hay or blanket on the ground. Lie down in comfort, and look upward. Man, it must be SO nice to live in rural, suburban areas. Unfortunately, I won’t be sprawling out on a hammock or a lawn chair to catch the supermoon and the meteor shower.”
The report notes that it’s not necessary to find the constellation Gemini to view the meteor shower, however, since the meteors will streak the sky in various different directions, as well as in front of many age-old constellations. You will even have the opportunity to see the shower when looking directly away from its radiant point, but, if you follow the path of any Geminid meteor backward, it will ultimately bring you to the constellation Gemini the Twins.
Need another reason to geek out? Jupiter will rise in the east at about the same time the Geminid radiant reaches its highest point in the night. So, along with admiring the Supermoon and the meteor shower, you also have the opportunity to view this sole visible planet from 2 am until dawn!
On 8 July 1947, a newspaper called the Roswell Daily Record published a front page article that sparked America’s most infamous brush with aliens.The headline read: “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region.”
Colonel Phillip Corso, Sr. was an Army intelligence officer who served on Eisenhower’s National Security Council. Following his 21-year military career, he served as a military analyst. He made a public figure of himself by acknowledging that he personally witnessed deceased extraterrestrials from the Roswell crash.
In the following video, he discusses this initial encounter, as well as having seen UFOs travel at 4,000 miles an hour on radar. He discusses how, during his employment in R&D, he was given fragments of extraterrestrial technologies from various crashes. His job was to seed industry with these technologies, informing them that they were from earthly foreign sources.
Many conspiracy theorists call the Roswell incident to be one of the most obvious pieces of evidence covered up by the U.S. government regarding extra-terrestrial life on Earth. It is accounts like Corso’s that fuel such thoughts.
Corso describes the deceased aliens as having a brain completely different than that of humans. They had no nose or mouth, no digestive system, and no sex organs. “They are more humanoid beings that anything else,” he says in the video. “Their spaceship is composed of durable metals and are biological in nature; nothing like we every seen.”
Now in his 80s, he attributes the burying of the information to fear, but says we can no longer rely on that, because it’s a distant reality.
“People want to know the truth,” he says, urging that the young people of America have a right to know. He says, contrary to popular belief, they won’t panic. “They aren’t going to pull their hair out, they want to hear this.”
Throughout the interview, it seems Corso is beyond aggravation for what could have been, mostly because he has come to terms with the fact that, when his UFO sightings occurred, he lived in a time when people were more accepting of what the government told, and didn’t tell them. Today? not so much.
“They are sick of being lied to,” he says. And goes on to say that, because the government is so big and so vast, if you leave important information alone, it will cover itself up. This is perhaps the most notable point of his interview. In a day and age where there is so much changing so quickly, yet people are finally beginning to have a voice, question the government, politics, and so much more, we need to take advantage of this newfound strength, boldness and individuality and use it to create communities that value the truth.

De Amerikaanse luitenant-kolonel Philip Corso wordt gezien als een belangrijke getuige in de zaak rond de Roswell-crash.
In de bestseller The Day After Roswell (1997), die een jaar voor zijn dood verscheen, beweerde Corso dat hij als hoofd van een afdeling van het Pentagon de beschikking had over buitenaardse technologie die uit een neergestorte UFO was gehaald.
In zijn boek schreef Corso dat de meeste hoge functionarissen van het Pentagon en hun belangrijkste stafleden er allemaal van op de hoogte waren dat veel nieuwe projecten gebruikmaakten van technologie uit neergestorte UFO’s.
Grote bedrijven
Hij zou als militair opdracht hebben gekregen om met de technologie naar verschillende grote Amerikaanse bedrijven te gaan.
Corso, die onder president Eisenhower lid was van de Nationale Veiligheidsraad, noemt in zijn boek zaken als laser optics, glass fibre optics, integrated circuits – gerelateerd aan de computer en aanverwante technologie – en night vision equipment.
Alien
Dit zouden eigenlijk technologieën zijn die door hem van de buitenaardsen naar de Amerikaanse bedrijven werden gebracht en vanaf dat moment verder zijn ontwikkeld.
In zijn oorspronkelijke manuscript stond ook dat hij in 1957 zelf een alien had ontmoet in een verlaten mijn. Hij zei telepathisch met het wezen te hebben gecommuniceerd.

Is de werkelijkheid eigenlijk een simulatie, gecreëerd door een geavanceerde computer? Wetenschappers en filosofen discussiëren al jaren over deze theorie.
Richard Terrile van het Jet Propulsion Laboratory van de NASA denkt dat er over enkele decennia in onze samenleving meer kunstmatige entiteiten zijn die in simulaties leven dan mensen.
Als er meer zelfbewuste entiteiten zijn in gesimuleerde realiteiten, wordt de kans steeds kleiner dat we in een echte wereld leven.
Computerspel
Als je aanneemt dat er in de toekomst meer digitale mensen zullen zijn die in gesimuleerde omgevingen leven, is het volgens de NASA-wetenschapper goed mogelijk dat we daar nu al deel van uitmaken.
Redenen om aan te nemen dat het universum een hologram is, zijn dat het zich wiskundig gedraagt en net als een computerspel (pixels) opgedeeld is in stukjes (subatomaire deeltjes).
“Zelfs dingen die we zien als constant – zoals tijd, energie, ruimte, volume – zijn gebonden aan een limiet,” zei hij.
“Als dat het geval is, is ons universum zowel berekenbaar als eindig,” vervolgde hij. “Deze eigenschappen maken het mogelijk dat het universum gesimuleerd kan worden.”
Buitengewoon onwaarschijnlijk
Het is volgens de NASA-wetenschapper ‘buitengewoon onwaarschijnlijk’ dat we niet in een simulatie leven.
Wie heeft die simulatie dan gemaakt? “Onze toekomstige zelf,” zei Terrile.
Het inzicht dat we waarschijnlijk in een simulatie leven is net zo baanbrekend als de ontdekking dat de aarde niet het centrum van het universum is, aldus de wetenschapper.
Meetprobleem
De simulatie-hypothese kan ook een aantal eigenaardigheden verklaren, waaronder het meetprobleem in de kwantummechanica.
Dat probleem gaat over de invloed die waarneming heeft op de realiteit. Terrile ziet ons als bewuste spelers in een videospel.
Hiernamaals
De simulatie-theorie heeft ‘mooie en diepe’ implicaties. De theorie legt de wetenschappelijke basis voor een soort van hiernamaals of ruimere realiteit boven onze eigen wereld.
Daarnaast houdt dit in dat we binnenkort onze eigen simulaties kunnen maken. “We kunnen dan creëren wat we maar willen en die werelden bevolken,” besloot Terrile.

De ziener of slapende profeet Edgar Cayce is misschien wel één van de meest accurate waarzeggers die de wereld ooit heeft gekend.
Hij voorspelt onder andere dat een fiks deel van de wereld onder water zal verdwijnen en dat dit begint met het “afbreken van de condities” in de Zuidelijke Oceaan/Antarctica.
Iets dat ook door Cayce wordt voorspeld zijn de aardveranderingen en de nogal dramatische gevolgen voor sommige delen van de aarde.
Het westelijk deel van Amerika zal afbreken. Het grootste deel van Japan zal in de zee verdwijnen. Het bovenste deel van Europa zal in een oogwenk veranderen.
Eén van de tekenen die Cayce geeft voor het echt beginnen van die aardveranderingen is het beginnen van het “afbreken van condities” in de Zuid Zee. De Zuid Zee als zodanig bestaat niet, maar algemeen wordt aangenomen dat hij de Zuidpool Zee of Zuidelijke Oceaan bedoeld.
Dan zien we in het nieuws hoe een bijna 130 kilometer lange scheur in het ijs van de Larsen C ijsplaat op Antarctica grote gevolgen kan hebben.
Een ijsblok zo groot als half Vlaanderen staat op afbreken. Het is een stuk dat zou afbreken van een nog grotere ijsschots. Frank Pattyn glacioloog aan de Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) vertelt er vandaag meer over in de Ochtend.
Het 128-km lange brok ijs dat op punt staat af te breken behoort tot de Larsen C ijsplaat, de grootste plaat in het oostelijk deel van Antartica. De afbraak van ijsplaten is een natuurlijk fenomeen, maar bij de Larsen C ijsplaat ligt het een stuk gevoeliger: de ijsplaat houdt een enorme gletsjer tegen om de oceaan in te glijden. De afbraak zou een aanzienlijke stijging in de zeespiegel kunnen veroorzaken. “Dat kan tot drie meter gaan over de hele wereld, ook bij ons. Dat is onheilspellend,” waarschuwt Pattyn.
We leven in een tijd waarin onze planeet heftige veranderingen doormaakt. Zoals we eerder schreven, is het niet alleen onze planeet die daar last van heeft, maar alle planeten in ons zonnestelsel.
Dit alles heeft niets te maken met de door de mens veroorzaakte klimaatopwarming hoax, dat onder andere wordt aangetoond door het feit dat het ijs op de noordpool van onder af smelt en niet van bovenaf.
Wat we zien zijn verschuivingen in het klimaat op aarde. Op plekken die bekend stonden als koud zien nu de ene warmtegolf na de andere zoals bijvoorbeeld Alaska en anderzijds is tegenwoordig sneeuw te verwachten in Saoedi Arabië en zoals vorige week voor de eerste keer ooit, ook sneeuw in Koeweit.
Het klimaat verschuift, al dan niet veroorzaakt door een naderende planeet en een aarde die onder invloed daarvan enigszins is gekanteld, waardoor alle weerpatronen op aarde verschuiven.
Zelfs bij ons is het merkbaar wanneer je zoals dit jaar regelmatig temperaturen hebt boven de 30 graden eind september. Het voorjaar daarentegen schijnt langer koud te zijn en maar moeilijk op gang te komen.
Dit alles heeft natuurlijk gevolgen voor het ijs op Groenland en Antarctica. Als al het ijs op Groenland zou smelten, zou de zeespiegel stijgen met ongeveer 8 meter en wanneer dan ook nog eens het ijs op Antarctica zou smelten, gaat het over een stijging van de zeespiegel van ongeveer 65 meter.
Men maakt plannen en Deltawerken en andere knappe bouwwerken, gebaseerd op berekeningen waarbij misschien wel rekening wordt gehouden met een stijging van de zeespiegel, maar niet in die mate waar je over spreekt zoals beschreven door de Belgische deskundige Frank Pattyn.
Als de dijken het water niet langer tegen zouden houden en het waterpeil ongeveer met zes meter stijgen, dan ziet er Nederland er ongeveer zo uit:

Dat er zoiets zou kunnen gebeuren, is voor de meeste mensen moeilijk voor te stellen. Maar, we leven in bijzondere tijden waarin regelmatig dingen gebeuren die in onze recente geschiedenis nog niet eerder zijn voorgevallen.
De volgende video laat zien welke tien landen ter wereld het meeste risico lopen wanneer de zeespiegel zou gaan stijgen.
Hopelijk zal het nooit gebeuren dat het grootste deel van ons land onderwater komt te staan en dat Edgar Cayce deze keer ongelijk heeft, maar het kan geen kwaad om er toch af en toe even bij stil te staan dat een groot deel van de bevolking onder de zeespiegel woont en dát we in bijzondere tijden leven.

Scott C Waring, a well-known UFO enthusiast, wrote on his website, UFOsightingsdaily.com: 'It's not a man-made object, because there are not solar panel wings on it to gather energy.
'There are no antennas on it for transmitting, also the surface is not completely round, but has a rough edge to it.
'Looks like a bio-mechanically grown UFO.'
But YouTube users seem less convinced.
User fantis07 commented: 'It looks like a tennis ball thrown before the telescope! ', while another said: 'It's just a rock orbiting the moon...'

I was smoking a cigarette in a location off of rt. 70 in Marlton, NJ. I heard what sounded like a military helicopter in the distance, so I moved to get a clear view of the sky because I wanted to see it. It sounded extremely close and I could feel the power, vibrations, ETC.
So finally It comes into view and it was hard to make out. There was a red orb in the front, with the chopper in the back. At first I though it may be top secret military craft with cloaking or reflection or something of the sort. It was hard to make out in the night sky it being a black helicopter and all, but when I focused in on it I could make out a red/orange orb shape which looked like it was glowing, producing and aura, and the helicopter behind it maybe between 300-500 ft. It was hard to make out and get a grasp with surroundings because it all happened so fast.
They were both flying in a straight path at what appeared to be high speeds. I had to run around the corner to keep eye sight until it went over the tree line out of sight. I had no means of following it and wouldn’t have been able to with the speed and direction it was going , having to follow traffic laws and everything. Right after my father walked out the door because he heard the chopper from inside the house and came to check it out and also had to grab something out of the car.
When he was trying to lock it, he hit the lock button at least 3x and the car was still unlocked, so I’m unsure if it messed with the electrical system or whatever category you would place this in. Take note that he’s not the best with newer technology though. So I came on here to check if anybody else had reported it.
Also take note there are military bases in the area. Fort Dix and Maguire AFB. I didn’t see any reports so I figured if I would. This is not the first time I’ve seen activity of this sort in my 20+ years in this area. One was 10+ years ago, and one was over this past summer. I made no reports of them or checked for any.

“On Saturday, December 30, 1972, Ventura Maceiras, the 73-year-old watchman of a property located in the Angel Cabañas Municipal Park of Tres Arroyos, province of Buenos Aires (Argentina), was calmly sipping tea one evening when a brilliantly illuminated object appeared out of nowhere in a nearby clearing. He could make out the forms of two beings clearly within the glowing object, and with the rustic courtesy of the gaucho, Maceiras proffered his cup of “mate” – the traditional Argentinean infusion – to the new arrivals. His cat, having just given birth to litter of kittens, ran away from the unnatural light, forsaking her young.
Events following the apparition of the alien craft proceeded quickly. Maceiras saw the beings depart in a flash of light, and immediately began to feel ill, with slight vomiting and incontinence. Strange tendrils of fine, thread-like material (a form of Morgellon’s Disease?) streamed from his eyes and his blood cell count dropped precipitously. Researchers were startled to find that fish in an adjacent pond had died of unknown causes.
Maceiras’s cat returned, displaying patches of burnt fur as if from extreme heat, and would later die mysteriously, along with Maceiras’s dog, who is seldom mentioned in the numerous retellings of the case. But a totally unforeseen event began to transpire: Maceiras began to acquire thoughts foreign to his experience and meager education. He was able to discuss the finer points of history, philosophy, medicine and astronomy with experts come from the capital to see him. To the amazement of his attending physicians, Maceiras was growing a new set of teeth.

A fully powered up version of the craft would have a much larger center glow to it. My fiance was on the back porch at night (approx time at top) she saw these very low triangular orb set glide across the sky, she then yelled for me to come out. I can describe the object or objects too low to be an airplane and absolutely silent to be a helicopter. Usually helicopters have red flashing or white flashing lights. This was just 3,4 or 5 solid white lights in complete silence. They orbs did not hang around too much and the video was a last second record, so its a bit shaky. The orbs slowly disapeared behind a wooded area, twords the end you may think the lights are flashing but its just the lights shining in and out of trees. *****NOW let me explain the sound*****, after we got done recording it I decided to upload it to facebook and after uploading it to facebook, because I like to educate the public best of my knowledge, for some odd reason, facebook added this most bizarre sound i've ever heard. Nu we steeds meer exoplaneten ontdekken, kunnen we één duidelijke conclusie trekken: de ene exoplaneet is nog gekker dan de andere.
Bijna 25 jaar geleden – in 1992 – konden onderzoekers voor het eerst met zekerheid concluderen dat ze een exoplaneet hadden ontdekt. Inmiddels is het 2016 en zijn ons meer dan 3500 exoplaneten bekend. En daar zitten heel wat vreemde snuiters tussen! Wij hebben er zeven voor je geselecteerd. Enjoy!
Nieuwjaarsdag laat even op zich wachten Wie wel van een feestje houdt, kijkt ongetwijfeld reikhalzend uit naar zijn verjaardag of nieuwjaarsnacht. En dan kan een jaar best lang duren. Maar tel je zegeningen en wees blij dat je wiegje op de aarde en niet op 2MASS J2126 stond. Want een jaar op deze exoplaneet duurt maar liefst 900.000 aardse jaren! De planeet draait namelijk met een hele, hele, hele grote boog om zijn ster heen en heeft 900.000 jaar nodig om een rondje rond die ster te voltooien. Oh, en je hoeft op 2MASS J2126 ook niet op fraaie zonsondergangen te rekenen, want de ster waar de planeet omheen draait, is slechts een klein stipje aan de horizon. De planeet en ster zijn namelijk zo’n 7000 keer verder van elkaar verwijderd dan de zon van de aarde verwijderd is.
De exoplaneet 2MASS J2126-8140. Als je goed kijkt, zie je op de achtergrond (links) nog de ster waar deze op zeer grote afstand omheen cirkelt.

Dertig ringen We zijn wel wat gewend, natuurlijk. Saturnus heeft machtige ringen. Net als Uranus en Neptunus. Maar toen ontdekten we J1407b: een exoplaneet met ringen. En niet zomaar een paar, nee, dertig stuks. En nog grote ook: de grootste ring is bijna net zo groot als de baan die de aarde rond de zon trekt. Als we de ringen van J1407b rond Saturnus zouden kunnen plaatsen, zouden we ze ’s nachts vanaf de aarde kunnen bewonderen, terwijl ze – nog veel groter dan een volle maan – aan de hemel staan.

Geroosterd De prachtige mythe van Icarus vertelde het al: blijf bij de zon vandaan! Maar de gasreus Kepler-70b luisterde niet. En toen zijn ster het einde van zijn leven naderde en opzwol, verdween de gasreus in de buitenste lagen van de stervende ster. Om er vervolgens van zijn atmosfeer ontdaan en flink geroosterd weer uit te komen. Van de flinke gasreus is vandaag de dag dan ook alleen de kern – die kleiner is dan onze aarde – over. En de gemiddelde oppervlaktetemperatuur van Kepler-70b ligt hoger dan de oppervlaktetemperatuur van de zon. Stel je zou proberen een ruimtesonde op de planeet te laten landen, dan zou de sonde door de enorme hitte niet eens tijd hebben om te smelten, maar gewoon verdampen.

Eitje Als iemand je vraagt om een planeet te beschrijven, zul je waarschijnlijk allereerst opmerken dat het om een redelijk cirkelvormig hemelobject gaat. Tenzij iemand je vraagt om WASP-12b te beschrijven. Deze gasreus is namelijk, jawel, eivormig. Het is eigenlijk een heel triest verhaal. WASP-12b stevent namelijk af op zijn ondergang. De hete Jupiter draait op zo’n kleine afstand om zijn ster heen dat deze letterlijk uit elkaar wordt getrokken. De enorme warmte van de zon ontdoet de zielige planeet van zijn atmosfeer. Grote kans dat WASP-12b binnen tien miljoen jaar verleden tijd is.
Nog nooit is er een planeet met meer sterren ontdekt dan PH1b.

Mag het een sterretje meer zijn, alsjeblieft? George Lucas – de bedenker van Star Wars – wist het allang: een planeet kan ook prima rond meerdere sterren cirkelen. En in 2011 moesten onderzoekers hem gelijk geven. Ze ontdekten toen voor het eerst een planeet met twee zonnen. Kan het nog gekker? Altijd! Kort erna ontdekten onderzoekers namelijk PH1b. Een exoplaneet met – liefhebbers van zonsondergangen opgelet – vier sterren! PH1b cirkelt rond een dubbelster en daaromheen cirkelt weer een andere dubbelster. Wie graag eens vanaf het oppervlak van deze planeet zou genieten van een romantische viervoudige zonsondergang komt helaas bedrogen uit. PH1b is een gasreus en heeft dus niet eens een vast oppervlak, laat staan zanderige duinen waarin je kunt neerploffen om de zon in de zee te kunnen zien zakken.
Hier en daar een pijnlijk buitje Mocht je ooit besluiten à la Captain Kirk het universum te gaan verkennen, knoop het volgende dan goed in je oren: niet is wat het lijkt. Neem bijvoorbeeld HD 189733b. Als je ‘m na een lange ruimtereis ziet, krijg je ongetwijfeld spontaan last van heimwee. Want zo op het eerste gezicht heeft deze blauwgekleurde planeet wel wat weg van de aarde. Maar zet een bezoekje aan de planeet maar gauw uit je hoofd. De atmosfeer kent temperaturen van meer dan 1000 graden Celsius en winden die zich met een snelheid van tot wel twee kilometer per seconde voort haasten. En – als klap op de vuurpijl – regent het er ook nog. Geen water, maar glas.

Zo ontzettend eenzaam Terwijl sommige planeten opeengepropt zitten in een planetair stelsel (denk aan de ster HD 10180 waar zeker vijf en mogelijk zelfs negen planeten omheen draaien), zijn anderen helemaal alleen. PSO J318.5-22 behoort droevig genoeg tot de laatste categorie en zwerft in complete eenzaamheid door de ruimte heen. De planeet bezit niet eens een ster om rondheen te kunnen draaien. Aangenomen wordt dat dergelijke eenzame planeten óf mislukte sterren zijn óf ooit deel uitmaakten van een planetair stelsel, maar daaruit zijn geschopt. Wanneer dergelijke planeten nog jong zijn, gloeien ze nog (dankzij de restwarmte van hun ontstaan). Maar als ook die warmte op is, valt de eeuwige duisternis in.
Je ziet: gekke exoplaneten zijn eerder regel dan uitzondering. En de kans is groot dat we de komende jaren nog veel meer vreemde exoplaneten aan dit rijtje mogen gaan toevoegen. Want de jacht op nieuwe exoplaneten is nog steeds in volle gang en zal de komende decennia dankzij de komst van superkrachtige telescopen geïntensiveerd worden. Hoewel het ontdekken van een zeer exoplaneet met bizarre kenmerken natuurlijk hartstikke leuk is, ontdekken onderzoekers veel liever een exoplaneet die – heel saai – als twee druppels water op onze planeet lijkt. Tot op heden is dat echter nog niet gelukt…
