New Research Shows the Universe May Have Once Been a Hologram
The fundamental laws of physics are incapable of explaining how the universe as we know it, with all its contents, could've fit in a small package that exponentially expanded.
Enter the holographic model of the universe – a model that suggests that the laws of physics can apply to the universe as a two-dimensional plane.
A TWO-DIMENSIONAL BOUNDARY
New research suggests that the universe may have been a hologram at one point in time, specifically a few hundred thousand years after the Big Bang. The study, published in the journal Physical Review Letters, is the latest research on the “holographic principle,” which suggests that the laws of physics can apply to the universe as a two-dimensional plane.
“We are proposing using this holographic universe, which is a very different model of the Big Bang than the popularly accepted one that relies on gravity and inflation,” said lead author Niayesh Afshordi, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Waterloo and Perimeter Institute. “Each of these models makes distinct predictions that we can test as we refine our data and improve our theoretical understanding – all within the next five years.”
The theory suggests that the volume of space appears three-dimensional, but is actually encoded on a two-dimensional boundary or an observer-dependent horizon that requires one less dimension that it appears. In short, we see it as three-dimensional, but it is projected from a two-dimensional source, similar to how a hologram screen works.
“The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms, where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card,” explained researcher Kostas Skenderis from the University of Southampton. “However, this time, the entire universe is encoded.”
MAKING SENSE OF COSMIC INFLATION
The researchers arrived at this conclusion after observing irregularities in the cosmic microwave background — the Big Bang’s remnant. The team used a model with one time and two space dimensions. Actual data from the universe, including cosmic microwave background observations, were then plugged into the model. The researchers saw that the two fit perfectly, but only if the universe is no more than 10 degrees wide.

“I would say you don’t live in a hologram, but you could have come out of a hologram,” Afshordi told Gizmodo. “[In 2017], there are definitely three dimensions.”
While many accept the cosmic inflation that came after the Big Bang, our understanding of physics – including current general relativity and quantum mechanics theories – doesn’t work with what we observe. The fundamental laws of physics are incapable of explaining how the universe as we know it, with all its contents, could’ve fit in a small package that exponentially expanded.
This is where Afshordi’s research and the holographic model come in. These could lead to new theories about the Big Bang and a functioning theory of quantum gravity — a theory that meshes quantum mechanics with Einstein’s theory of gravity. “The key to understanding quantum gravity is understanding field theory in one lower dimension,” Afshordi says. “Holography is like a Rosetta Stone, translating between known theories of quantum fields without gravity and the uncharted territory of quantum gravity itself.”
The question remains, though: how did the universe transition from 2D to 3D? Further study is needed to explain this.
In many ways, the world may seem to be turning on its head. In one way, in particular, it might be literally true: The Earth’s north and south magnetic poles are due for a dramatic switch in positions, according to geophysics research at the University of Leeds.
The Earth’s satellites, power lines, ocean currents, and animal migration patterns are all dependent on the stability of the magnetic field, which envelops the planet and shields it from harmful cosmic rays like a pair of polarized sunglasses. Modern humans have been lucky to take that stability for granted; the Earth hasn’t experienced a full magnetic pole switcheroo for 780,000 years (though it experienced a temporary one 41,000 years ago). But after looking at evidence of magnetic field reversals in the Earth’s rocks, Phil Livermore, Ph.D., and John Mound, Ph.D., suggest it could happen sooner rather than later.
In a new article in The Conversation, they noted that reversals are hard to predict, but scientists have a rough idea of when a celestial body is “overdue” for one:
Geomagnetic reversals occur a few times every million years on average. However, the interval between reversals is very irregular and can range up to tens of millions of years.

While Earth’s magnetic field appears relatively stable to us, on a grand time scale it is actually quite changeable. Written in the rocks is evidence of “several hundred” reversals in the history of our planet — other bodies in space, like the Sun, experience them too — which sometimes led to the movement of the north and south poles toward the equator or the existence of multiple poles in addition to pole reversal.
The biggest concern that a pole reversal event poses is that it would weaken our planet’s greatest shield: In particular, fluctuations in the stability of the magnetic shield opens up the Earth to threats from geomagnetic storms, which take place when the Sun’s eruptions of energy (like coronal mass ejections) reach our field 3 to 5 days after they leave the Sun. According to NASA, it’s our high-orbit communications satellites that are in most danger — they’re located at the center of the storm — but our power lines can also be affected. In 1989, the entire Canadian province of Quebec lost power just as a massive geomagnetic storm took place.
Because of the field’s variability, however, Livermore and Mound say that pinpointing the exact date of the next reversal will be “difficult,” but research like theirs, which tracks the flow of molten iron in the Earth’s core that gives rise to the magnetic field, is improving our prediction abilities. In the meantime, however, we probably shouldn’t worry too much: In an article in Nature in 2008, another University of Leeds researcher, David Gibbons, Ph.D., said we “could be” headed toward another reversal but assured readers that the “human race has survived many excursions and a few reversals already: so we are likely to come through the next one unscathed.”
In Prometheus, Michael Fassbender’s David, an android, finds a magnificent hologram of the universe called the Orrery. This holographic map revealed how star systems and their planets work together. Some scientists think similar holograms might contain comprehensive explanations of how our universe works, too.
On Friday, a team of international researchers claimed to have come across the first observational evidence to give credence to the theory that the universe, as we know it, is built like a hologram.
“Imagine that everything you see, feel, and hear in three dimensions (and your perception of time) in fact emanates from a flat two-dimensional field,” study author Kostas Skenderis of the University of Southhampton explains in a statement. “The idea is similar to that of ordinary holograms where a three-dimensional image is encoded in a two-dimensional surface, such as in the hologram on a credit card. However, this time, the entire universe is encoded.”
In other words, they’re suggesting that everything we perceive about the universe — height, width, depth, and time, included — is actually contained in a flat surface in which information is contained on the boundaries. That information is what makes us perceive reality in three dimensions.

This holographic explanation of the universe assumes a slightly different definition of “hologram” than the holograms in Prometheus or the staticky holographic messages sent in Star Wars. Those are technological innovations, whereas the “holographic universe” described in the research has more to do with how spatial dimensions work in space. That is, the universe we know isn’t being cast from a great projector in the sky — but according to an analysis of cosmological data, it has behaved as though it does.
Skenderis and his team tested out the holographic principle by taking data about cosmic irregularities in the relative aftermath of the Big Bang and applying that information to holographic models. Doing so, they write, resulted in “substantial evidence” for the holographic explanation of the universe because the models were able to predict the early-universe anomalies.
The research is controversial: In December 2015, a team of theoretical physicists came to the opposite conclusion, stating that their experiments disproved the holographic theory. But the scientists behind this new research are hopeful their research will shine a light on how the universe operates.
“Einstein’s theory of general relativity explains almost everything large scale in the universe very well, but starts to unravel when examining its origins and mechanisms at a quantum level,” says Skenderis. “Scientists have working for decades to combine Einstein’s theory of gravity and quantum theory. Some believe the concept of a holographic universe has the potential to reconcile the two.”
In the last seven months alone, there have been a remarkable four reported instances where live feeds from the International Space Station have been cut – just as mysterious objects appear.

In the distance, a small spot can be seen flying across the screen moments before the astronaut’s hand obscured the view.
“We not only see a UFO fly overhead but we are also going to see the astronaut attempt to hide this activity by putting his hand in front of the camera,” said Tyler, from Secure Team.
“And he actually does this a couple of times.”
NASA have never responded to the claims and the supposed alien spacecraft could simply be passing meteors.
The CIA posted almost 800,000 declassified files to its Electronic Reading Room last week, releasing a total of 12 million pages to the public’s fingertips.
Declassification of 25-year-old records is mandated by a series of Executive Orders that began with President Bill Clinton in 1995. Each president since has amended and replaced preceding orders with the intention of declassifying documents with historic value from the past quarter century and beyond. In 2000, the CIA introduced the CIA Records Search Tool (CREST) system to the National Archives Records Administration in Maryland. While some documents were posted on the CIA website, they could only be accessed at this specific location. Journalists, historians, and other interested parties would have to travel there and print pages from one of four computers—as policy does not allow the use of a thumb drive or camera.
Many of these documents have already been released through public records requests from nonprofits, public officials, attorneys, and curious Americans.
“Access to this historically significant collection is no longer limited by geography. The American public can access these documents from the comfort of their homes,” said CIA Director of Information Management Joseph Lambert, in a statement.
MuckRock, is an organization that provides support for anyone interested in filing government public records requests In 2014, MuckRock filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit to gain access to the entire CREST database, represented by Kel McClanahan of National Security Counselors.
The CIA had argued that restrictions were required for public access to declassified records for security reasons. In 2015, the CIA said it would need six years to release all documents. This fall, the CIA’s Litigation Information Review Office agreed to post the documents at the beginning of 2017.
Michael Morisy is the co-founder of Muckrock, and told Paste in an interview, “People have been going after this piecemeal and that creates an expense. We want the government to be held accountable by the people. This had been declassified and reviewed for security risks.”
What Is in the Documents?
The CREST collection contains files from the Vietnam War, Berlin Tunnel Project, post-9/11 interrogation techniques, 40,000 pages from Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and documents on military issues. You can even look into what the government knew about aliens back when rumors about Roswell began floating around.
In one memo from the Office of Scientific Intelligence to then director Walter Bedell Smith of the CIA, it is determined that “flying saucers” pose “national security implications.” Another outline for a panel presentation lists the locations of recent UFO sightings.
A hundred pages of formerly top secret information on the famous Berlin Tunnel is published. The tunnel was a joint operation between the CIA and British Secret Intelligence Service to tap phone calls from the Soviet embassy and headquarters near East Berlin. The effort yielded great intel, but was revealed by a mole to the Soviets, and shut down in 1956.

The CIA Had a…Unique Sense of Humor
Here’s a list of Soviet jokes the agency prepared for its deputy director. In one, they joke about the KGB headquarters burning down.
Two MuckRock users figured out that President Reagan used one of these in his infamous cache of jokes he claimed to be from the Soviets themselves, about Russia.
In another file, you can see a translation of a German recipe for invisible ink from French to English. The formula was originally declassified in 2011.
What Was JFK Looking at during the Cold War?
You can search the President’s Daily Intelligence Checklist from the Kennedy through Ford administrations, and get completely lost in the data. For instance, on Dec. 2, 1961, President Kennedy was given an intelligence briefing about “further moves to forestall the El Salvador coup,” and intel on how American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) was going to most likely have an interview with Khrushchev, with James Raggerty as the interviewer. There were also reports of the Chinese financing “communist operations in South Vietnam.” Kennedy likely received the Chinese intel from a team he sent to Southern Vietnam to report back on conditions. He would end up increasing the troop level in Vietnam to just under 9,000 troops by 1962.
If you want to look even further back, documents from the CIA’s predecessor—the Office of Strategic Services (OSS)—have been added online. A late night search revealed that Roosevelt administration officials were aware of Hitler’s persecution of Jews as early as 1936.
New Intelligence on Guantanamo Bay Prisoners
A more recent file includes heavily redacted information about the interrogation techniques the CIA used on Guantanamo Bay prisoner Abu Zubaydah. There is one mention of an approval for waterboarding. Tapes of the interrogations were later destroyed by the CIA in 2005.
Although many of the documents in the CIA reading room were previously released, they often didn’t make it beyond those four computers in Maryland. MuckRock sees this as a success. Morisy explained, “This information belongs to the public, and is, but it deserves to be fully public. We’re glad they have fully complied with a law from 1995.”

The UFO was seen in Google Earth images "parked" in a number of locations at the end of a runway at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, according to alien hunters.
Details of the discovery on Mesa Road at the laboratory were upload to YouTube by channel Name Shame.
The video has been picked up by other UFO websites, including ufosightingsdaily.com.

Mr Waring said he was able to find a number of images of the UFO in different locations at the site on Google Earth.
Her said: "Now, the amazing thing is that if you hit the date bar, you can view photos of the same area in the past, and this disk moves around from place to place.
"It's in the perfect position where no one would be able to see it since its on a hilltop at the highest point in the city with mountain walls on all sides and a military fence around the facility.
He found an actual flying saucer parked near the secret military laboratory on the mountain top.

"So, what we see here is an alien craft being experimented on at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and since its parked outside, it's probably parked there because it's too much trouble to move it back and forth nightly for test flights.
"As you can see, it's on a road track that goes into the building, then later its off the track hidden near the bushes."
According to Nasa the laboratory is where the US’s first Earth-orbiting science satellite was made.
On the NASA website it says: “In addition to its missions, JPL developed and manages NASA’s Deep Space Network, a worldwide system of antennas that communicates with interplanetary spacecraft.”

Keen-eyed UFO hunters have spotted a strange circular object on Google Earth images of a Nasa runway. The satellite images appear to show a 'flying saucer' spacecraft parked at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) near Los Angeles
'Is NASA playing games?.. UFO captured? What is it?' he said in the post.
Google's satellite images reveal that that the object has moved since 2014.
While it could be seen sat on a patch of grass near the JPL runway three years ago, it has since shifted onto the runway.
The JPL, near Los Angeles, is the birthplace of the US's first satellite to orbit the Earth.
The 'Explorer 1' satellite launched in 1958.
The JPL now acts as the headquarters for exploratory missions to study distant planets and asteroids.
But conspiracy theorists suggest that the labs house secret alien technology captured from fallen UFOs.
'I doubt this is a captured extraterrestrial flying saucer, more likely it is a structure or vehicle that has a flying saucer shape,' Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, told MailOnline.

And this is not the first time that UFO Hunters have used Google's satellite tech to spot aliens.
Earlier this month a self-proclaimed ufologist claimed footage of himself fighting and being abducted by aliens had been caught on camera by Google maps.
A man who called himself John Mooner, from Newton Abbot in Devon, claimed a 'real alien abduction' has been captured taking place on Google's satellite cameras.
The green glow is supposedly light from an alien ship hoping to beam him up. The small red circles allegedly show him being punched in the face by an alien. A zoomed in version is shown top right
THE 'ABDUCTION'
Mr Mooner claimed he does not remember the abduction at all, but is convinced it is himself in the footage.
'I do remember sporadic episodes of missing time throughout the year of 2016 and going back through the previous years,' he said.
He is convinced from looking at a series of pictures that he was abducted.
'The shocking thing about this was that it's me being abducted by a grey alien and the satellite image clearly shows me trying to fight off the grey alien by punching it in the face,' he said.
'I was having trouble with the Google Earth app that was installed on my computer so I looked for an online option and found Google satellite maps,' Mr Mooner told the Torquay Herald Express.
'I thought to myself I will view the area where I was UFO spotted from last year and look for anything out of the ordinary.
'I was left speechless by what I saw.
'The satellite has captured a real alien abduction taking place.'
The pictures were released by Mr Mooner, who claims he took them from Google maps.
Where exactly the abduction took place is unknown.
'The shocking thing about this was that it's me being abducted by a grey alien and the satellite image clearly shows me trying to fight off the grey alien by punching it in the face,' he said.
Mr Mooner claims he does not remember the abduction at all, but is convinced it is himself in the footage. 'I do however remember sporadic episodes of missing time throughout the year of 2016 and going back through the previous years,' he said

Extraordinary details about the Broad Haven Triangle sightings in a declassified Ministry of Defence document have been revealed by author Neil Spring.
His new book – The Watchers – looks at the bizarre events of the 1977 UFO sightings.

SIGHTING: Fourteen schoolchildren spotted a craft landing in Broad Haven in 1977
Fourteen children witnessed a craft which landed near their school.
All 14 drew similar pictures of the the craft when asked to by investigators.
Poltergeists allegedly plagued one family, animals were seen cowering and ghostly figures peered into farmhouse windows.
Neil researched the documents after they were sent to the National Archives – 30 years after the bizarre happenings.
He said: "I visited Broad Haven a sceptic, and came away convinced that some of the locals knew far more about the mysterious occurrences of 1977 than they are willing to reveal."
Among the documents read by Neil, was a letter from the MOD to the RAF.
The letter's author wrote about the number of "level-headed" witnesses to the strange activity and he called for a "discreet enquiry".
At the time, MoD officials showed no public interest in the sightings, adding it did not believe there was a threat to national security.

The mysterious document is titled My First Contact with Friends from Space, with a subtext called UFO Nachricheter – which translates to UFO Messenger in German.
Only one sheet of the 18-page document exists but it states it was published on October 1, 1973.
However, it appears this is the only page available and little is known about the document's backstory.
The emergence of the document has generated interest among online conspiracists.

Recently a person who calls himself “Concerned Earthling” wrote a fan letter (1) to Jacques Vallee (2), a noted computer scientist, venture capitalist, and UFO investigator to inquire why he was withdrawing from the field of UFO research. Vallee wrote back(3), reassuring the fan that he was not entirely separating himself from UFO studies, but plans to continue delving into the phenomenon.
Vallee would be a fascinating character even if it were not for his interest in UFOs. He was involved in the Arpanet, the predecessor of today’s Internet. He was an astronomer while living in France in the early 1960s and wrote a science fiction novel “Le Sub-Espace” (Subspace.) He later became a venture capitalist specializing in a number of high-tech business ventures.

Allen Hynek (4), an astronomer who started as a UFO skeptic and who eventually admitted to the possibility of alien visitations. Vallee served as the model of Lacombe, the character played by Francois Truffaut in the Steven Spielberg movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.”
Vallee’s journey with regard to UFOs took a different path than that of Hynek. He started with the belief that UFOs are alien spacecraft, but then began to develop other theories to explain the phenomenon. He described his new ideas in a recent interview on “Coast to Coast.” (5)
As a computer scientist, Vallee started to notice common patterns in not only UFOs but also religious visitations, sightings of cryptids, and psychic phenomenon going back throughout history. He believes that every one of these events, once one accounts for events caused by natural phenomenon, is the result of a nonhuman consciousness, likely from another dimension, attempting to manipulate the consciousness of human beings to effect social change.
Passport to Magonia
The theory suggests that disparate events such as the visitation of the Virgin Mary at Fatima, any given religious revelation perceived by such people as different as Mohammed and Joseph Smith, and any unexplained UFO sighting are part of a campaign to influence humanity.
The purpose of this campaign, using deception and changing according to the culture of the time, is unknown. Vallee, by the way, does not believe in a government conspiracy to conceal the truth about UFOs (6). That, in his view, is part of the deception. He related his theory in his classic book, “Passport to Magonia.”
To buttress his alternate theory, Vallee has proposed five arguments against the idea of UFOs as extraterrestrial in origin. (7)
1. Unexplained close encounters are far more numerous than required for any physical survey of the earth; 2. The humanoid body structure of the alleged “aliens” is not likely to have originated on another planet and is not biologically adapted to space travel; 3. The reported behavior in thousands of abduction reports contradicts the hypothesis of genetic or scientific experimentation on humans by an advanced race; 4. The extension of the phenomenon throughout recorded human history demonstrates that UFOs are not a contemporary phenomenon; and 5. The apparent ability of UFOs to manipulate space and time suggests radically different and richer alternatives.
Not Popular With Everyone
Vallee’s theories have, to say the least, angered some on both sides of the UFO debate, skeptics and believers alike. Valle has often expressed frustration with the religious nature of some of the arguments for which he has been called a “heretic among heretics.”
He has not withdrawn entirely from UFO studies, however. He has recently published a new book, “Wonders in the Sky,” (8) which chronicles aerial phenomenon, which could be interpreted as UFOs, dating back to antiquity. He notes that pre-20th century phenomena predate heavier-than-air aircraft, Area 51, and (for the most part) speculation about extraterrestrial life.
In effect, Vallee has developed a kind of unified field theory that explains a whole host of unexplained phenomenon. Agree with him or not, his ideas are original and compelling.

Before the 1990s, America kept a rather close eye on India, declassified documents reveal.

For a good part of the last century, India and the US weren’t the best of friends.
While the US saw India tilting towards the Soviet Union, India viewed with suspicion America’s support for Pakistan. It is only in the late 1990s, after the Cold War ended, that Indo-US ties began improving.
However, all through the troubled relationship, the US took a keen interest in India. While this is understandable considering the Cold War dynamics, some of the 13 million pages of documents declassified by the Central Intelligence Agency on January 18 reveal the extent of this interest.
Five years before former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by Sri Lanka’s Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1991, the CIA had prepared a detailed “brief” of such an eventuality. One of the CIA documents says:
“Prime minister Rajiv Gandhi faces at least an even chance of assassination before his tenure in office ends in 1989. We believe Indo-US relations could also suffer as a result of domestic political changes following Rajiv’s assassination.”
Gandhi, it seems, was viewed as being favourably disposed towards the US, in a marked departure from India’s traditional stand, with the prime minister even sacking a US-baiter foreign minister. “His (Gandhi’s) removal of foreign minister (Bali Ram) Bhagat, who criticised US actions against Libya, probably is intended in part to smooth relations with Washington,” the Memo NESA/M/86-20075, dated May 22, 1986, says.
The Himalayan UFOs
A CIA report from April 1968 details six sightings of unidentified flying objects over Ladakh, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Nepal between February and March that year.
“A huge metallic disc-shaped object with a six-foot base and four feet in height was found in a crater at Baltichaur, five miles NE of Pokhara,” the report said. Another said, “One white light and simultaneously two blasting sounds were heard. Also, one reddish light followed by white smoke.”
Assessment of Indira Gandhi
In 2013, Wikileaks had released cables detailing how the CIA had planted its source in Indira Gandhi’s household during the Emergency in 1975. While the CIA documents don’t confirm this, the agency’s intelligence gathering seemed to have improved significantly during the Emergency. The report said:
“In both government and party, Gandhi has made it clear that she wants individuals whose loyalty to her is beyond question. Development of a personality cult around the prime minister has been one of the more prominent features of the Emergency…the prime minister relies for advice on a small group of confidants, including her son, Sanjay. This inner circle is composed of bureaucrats and family retainers, reflecting the prime minister’s general distrust of politicians who might one day challenge her control.”
The intelligence agency also spoke about how nearly 40% of the Members of Parliament from Indira Gandhi’s Congress party received Soviet political contributions.
Indo–Pakties and the H-bomb
The US believed that after the successful liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, India could wage a war to reclaim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The US even held high-level meetings to discuss the course of action in such a case.
While there was no subsequent war, India-Pakistan relations remained a cause of worry for the CIA.
“India’s ability to carry out the military option is not in question…The enrichment plant (in Pakistan) would be a soft target…The difficulty of acquiring necessary components and rebuilding the plant would probably rule out production of highly-enriched uranium for years,” the September 1981 CIA report says.
In 1985, the Rajiv Gandhi government made preparations to test a hydrogen bomb in response to Pakistan’s nuclear programmes. The CIA noted that the hydrogen bomb was created by a team of 36 scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. “A rapid series of Pakistani tests would compel New Delhi to develop nuclear weapons and touch off a nuclear arms race between the two,” a CIA document says. The US even considered sending a nuclear emissary to the two countries to calm down tempers.
Pakistan‘s grouse, India’s inferiority complex
The CIA reports document why Pakistan chose to ally with the US during the Cold War.
“Pakistan’s pro-Western orientation stems from her fear of India and USSR rather than any basic sympathy with capitalism or Christian civilisation. It is more negative than positive,” an undated CIA document says. “Pakistan believes India has never accepted its independent existence and it wants to make it a weak buffer state under Indian hegemony,” the declassified documents say.
The agency, meanwhile, was also scathing of India’s national sense of “inferiority.” “National achievements, especially the crushing victory over Pakistan in December 1971 and the apparent ability to create a nuclear weapon, have tended to buoy self-confidence, but euphoria is transient and the feelings of national inferiority are deeply imbedded,” the documents say.
Sathya Sai Baba
In the 1990s, the CIA prepared a secret report on Sathya Sai Baba, a popular spiritual guru, who the agency believed could build another “worldwide religion.”
Sai Baba had repeatedly referred to himself as Kalki, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The CIA drew parallels with the messianic return of Jesus Christ in Christianity or the Mahdi in Islam. “In fact, he says he is the Biblical second coming. While such claims may be incredible, most of his devotees believe him,” the report says. The spiritual guru was well known for numerous miracles, including his ability to “materialise” objects such as holy ash, gold, and food.
“Such claims have not been scientifically verified in a laboratory, although a team of western parapsychologists observed some of these events in a field study. While the scientific paradigm may reject the possibility of such capabilities, traditional Hindus accept them as entirely plausible,” the report says.
Target: Gen Cariappa
The declassified documents disturbingly suggest that one of India’s greatest military figures, General KM Cariappa, was the target of an assassination attempt and that the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh had a role to play in this.
“An attempt to assassinate General Cariappa, the commander-in-chief of Indian Army, was made during the General’s recent inspection tour of East Punjab,” says a report.
This was amidst a reported rift in the Indian Army on the north-south lines. General Cariappa, the army’s then commander-in-chief who went on to become Field Marshal, was from the Kodagu region of southern India. “RSS is capitalising on the north-south split among Army officers, persuading Sikh officers, whom the informant considers treacherous and unreliable, to spread dissension,” a document titled “Rift in Officers corps of the Indian Army” says.
Six persons were sentenced to death for this alleged assassination attempt, the report states.
Are UFOs real? That's beyond Patch's brand of locality. But there have been reports of them around town, some dating back to the 60s in the National UFO Reporting Center files.
Massachusetts residents reported more than 100 UFO sightings in 2016 alone. Westford hasn't seen one since 2013.

If we’ve missed signs of life on Mars, a new chemistry technique could finally find it

In August 2012, NASA’s Curiosity rover landed with a trove of scientific instruments, including SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars), whose job was to test Martian soil for signs of life.
Mars once had oceans. Our best understanding suggests that the presence of liquid water bodes well for the existence of life. Even if Martian life has since died, it should have left signs behind. These may include traces of carbon-containing chemicals such as amino acids, which are needed to make proteins and thus almost everything else in a living cell.
But after four years of collecting and testing Martian soil for such chemicals, SAM has come back mostly empty-handed. It has found the presence of water and some odd chemicals, but it hasn’t yet found any molecule considered a precursor to life.
Why has SAM had no luck? Maybe there was never any life on Mars. Or maybe there was, but SAM is not sensitive enough to search for the signs of it. It’s why no NASA scientist has given up hope.
At present, SAM can detect complex amino acids at the parts-per-million (ppm) level—meaning that in a sample of soil, it can spot if a few molecules in every million are amino acids. But if life’s precursor molecules are present in lower concentrations, say 10 parts per billion, then SAM won’t be able to detect them.
Peter Willis and his colleagues at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) have a solution. In a study published in the journal Analytical Chemistry, they have come up with a technique that is 10,000 times more sensitive than the one employed by SAM.
Here’s how it works. A soil sample is steeped in water and heated. This forces many types of chemicals out of the soil and into the water. Next, those extracted chemicals are mixed with a fluorescent dye, which selectively reacts and tags only amino acids. Finally, a laser is shone on the mixture and the tagged amino acids shine, helping computers detect their presence.
The technique is accurate enough to detect the simultaneous presence of 17 types of amino acids, which as a set form one of the most crucial building blocks of life. Existing techniques can detect no more than 12 at once. Crucially, it can also analyze what proportion of the mixture is made of simple amino acids—which can be made by non-living processes and are sometimes found even in meteorites—and complex amino acids, which would be strongest indication of life’s existence.
“Our goal isn’t necessarily to differentiate between Earth life and extraterrestrial life with this test,” says Jessica Creamer, a co-author of the study. “We make the question broader than that, simply asking: Is life present?”
Willis tested his analytical technique on a sample from Mono Lake, which has exceptionally salty water and serves as a good model for salty waters believed to be on Mars. The fact that the test is done in water also means that it could be used in missions to the oceans on Saturn’s moon Enceladus and Jupiter’s moon Europa.
Separately, his team has been working on developing a “chemical laptop,” a shoebox-sized instrument that can run on battery power and perform complex chemical analyses. Creamer and Willis are now looking to transfer their new chemical technique to the portable lab. Such miniaturization is key if an instrument that uses the analytical technique is to be sent aboard a spacecraft.
“We will definitely pitch our instrument for missions to both Europa and Enceladus,” says Willis. “We would be very excited if it got selected.”

If alien life is out there in our solar system, it’s probably very small and very hard to detect, buried deep beneath the surface of an icy moon. But, rejoice alien seekers: a new test developed by scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory could improve our chances of spotting extraterrestrial microbes and ending our cosmic loneliness once and for all.
Proteins, the direct expression of DNA, are a key component of life as we know it. The building blocks of proteins, called amino acids, form spontaneously around the universe, but create a distinctive pattern, or “biosignature,” when life is involved in their making. Now, scientists have tailored an old-school chemistry technique to analyze those amino acid patterns, creating a tool for sniffing out alien biosignatures in just a few grams of seawater.
The method, 10,000 times more sensitive than similar techniques used by NASA’s Mars Curiosity Rover, is ideally suited for a life-hunting mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa, or Saturn’s Enceladus, lead study author Peter Willis told Gizmodo. Willis and his colleagues have published their work in the journal Analytical Chemistry.
“The astrobiology community has recognized amino acids as uniquely interesting targets in the search for life,” Willis said. “However, the technologies available for performing these analyses are lacking in terms of sensitivity and the number of amino acids that can be analyzed, particularly in the area of chiral analysis.”

Chiral molecules, including amino acids, are molecules that come in mirror-image versions—a “left handed” one and a “right handed” one. When amino acids form in space, scientists expect to see an equal mixture of the two versions. But here on Earth, nearly all amino acids are left handed. That’s because biology requires this basic consistency in order for proteins to properly fold.
Astrobiologists expect that all protein-based life—anywhere—will similarly “choose” to produce only left handed, or only right handed, amino acids. By determining this chirality, Willis’ new process offers a rapid and sensitive test for extraterrestrial biological activity. The technique can simultaneously distinguish 17 common amino acids at very low concentrations.
The researchers tested their method out on Mono Lake, a highly salty, alkaline lake in California that may be chemically similar to the globe-spanning ocean beneath Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus. Eventually, they’d like to package the tool up on a spacecraft, and send it hunting for life elsewhere in our solar system.
Jonathane Lunine, an astronomer at Cornell University and co-investigator on the “Enceladus Life Finder,” a proposed NASA New Frontiers-class spacecraft whose mission shares its name, said the technique was interesting. “It’s not the first such instrument to operate in this way (in the lab), but no doubt it’s a valuable tool in the arsenal the merits further development,” he told Gizmodo.
Lunine cautioned, however, that new methods have to be tested and proven quite a bit before they’re ready to be shipped off on New Frontiers adventures (the Enceladus Life Finder team is currently seeking funding for a 2025 launch). And in addition to chiral molecules, Lunine says, other indicators, like hydrocarbon patterns, will be needed to prove we’ve found aliens.
Still, it’s always exciting to hear about scientists developing better tools to address the profound question of whether or not humans are alone. Now, let’s see if we can answer that question without angering the space octopus.
Accounts of mysterious flashing lights in the sky, spacecrafts and encounters with “real” aliens reflect high levels of public interest in UFOs and the belief that there is “something out there”. However, many psychologists are less convinced, and think they can provide more down-to-earth, scientific explanations.
Belief in aliens has increased steadily since the birth of modern alien research in the 1940s and 1950s, following the news surrounding a classified US military project at Roswell Air Force Base, New Mexico. Surveys in Western cultures estimated belief in aliens to be as high as 50% in 2015. And despite the fact that it is considered rare, a significant number of people also believe they have experienced alien abduction.
Present day awareness of alien abduction dates to the 1961 case of Betty and Barney Hill, who witnessed odd lights and experienced “missing time” and “lost memories” while driving. The reported consequences of abduction are often loss of memory, missing time, and problems such as sickness, sleepwalking, nightmares and psychological trauma. Following their experience, Betty and Barney experienced psychological problems and subsequently sought therapy.
Although the accuracy of the numbers is questioned, a poll by the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research conducted 30 years after this account said that around 3.7m Americans believed that they too had experienced alien abduction.
Sceptics argue that alien-related encounters are merely hoaxes created for financial gain or social advantage. Perhaps Roswell is the most famous example. Initial reports from the 1940s left sufficient gaps of explanation for Ray Santilli to release in 1995 what he claimed was film footage showing an alien autopsy from the time, further confusing the issue. He later admitted it was a hoax. The incident sparked controversy and prompted claims that an alien craft had crash-landed in the New Mexico desert and that US authorities were involved in a cover-up.
The theory that alien abductions are hoaxes may be true in a few cases, but there is no reason to assume that the majority of “experiencers” are frauds. In fact, psychologists have come up with a number of plausible, scientific explanations for people’s supposed alien encounters.
Personality traits
One explanation is that when people believe they have had an experience of alien abduction, they have misinterpreted, distorted and conflated real and imagined events. Hence, sceptics of alien encounters explain them away in terms of psychological processes and personality characteristics.
Several studies report that experiencers do not typically differ from non-experiencers on objective psychopathological measures – those that assess psychological well-being and adjustment – and have no history of mental instability. However, one characteristic that is associated with abduction experiences is a proclivity for fantasy.
Mixed evidence supports the theory that fantasy-prone people engage in elaborate imaginings and often confuse fantasy with reality. There are also other psychological explanations, such as dissociation – where an individual’s mental processes detach from each other and from reality, often in response to extreme or stressful life events. A tendency towards being fantasy-prone and dissociation has been linked in studies to childhood trauma and hypnotic suggestibility.
Psychologists argue that hypnosis encourages the creation and recall of detailed fantasies. For example, Betty and Barney Hill’s account was typical of reported alien encounters: medical examinations or procedures, communication with alien captors, a powerful, mystical feeling, tours of spaceships and journeys to other planets before being returned to the car. And it was under hypnosis that these “missing memories” were “recovered”.
It’s for these reasons that it’s believed alien abduction experiences may arise from a combination of personality characteristics and susceptibility to false memories.
Sleep paralysis is a feeling of being conscious but unable to move, which occurs when a person passes between stages of wakefulness and sleep.
Experiencers’ claims share characteristics with sleep paralysis: a sense of being awake, not dreaming, and realistic perceptions of the environment. The inability to move, a feeling of fear or dread, and the sense of another presence – perhaps evil or malevolent – are common symptoms. Also common are a feeling of pressure on the chest and difficulty breathing, and of being held or restricted to a lying position: most sleep paralysis attacks occur while the individual is lying on their back.
Sceptic Michael Shermer once collapsed from sleep deprivation following an 83-hour bike race and his support team rushed to his aid. Shermer was caught in a “waking dream” and so perceived them as aliens from the 1960s television series The Invaders. It also explains some ghost sightings, such as the “night hag”, often experienced by those who suffer from sleep paralysis.
Temporal lobe sensitivity is a theory that suggests the temporal lobes of some people’s brains are more vulnerable to influence from low-level magnetic frequencies. Michael Persinger, a neuroscientist at Laurentian University in Canada, is among those who believes that increased temporal lobe activity can explain paranormal experiences such as alien abduction. His theory is that magnetic fields stimulate the temporal lobes, resulting in hallucinatory experiences similar to those reported by alien abductees.
None of this is to say that many people who believe they have experienced alien abduction are liars, merely that their accounts and experiences can be explained through recourse to theories with a scientific basis. There are many logical, plausible scientific explanations, none of which rely upon the existence of aliens. However, it should also be noted that not all reported alien abduction experiences can be easily explained by any of these scientific theories – and this throws up many more questions.

An Unidentified Flying Object was seen to hover over the Santa Monica pier early Sunday afternoon. It was reported by hundreds of onlookers and photographed by many.
Witnesses said the UFO moved up and down, and left and right at a rapid speed, more rapid than conventional human aircraft are capable of flying. After appearing for half an hour, the craft seemed to disappear into the cliffs.
Alien spacecraft transport themselves not just across space but also through time, so the 110-year-old pier is especially interesting as a landmark to time travelers. Parts of it can be seen across 3 centuries, which is important in the space/time continuum.
Appearing the day after the US Federal Aviation Administration and the City of Santa Monica agreed to close the Santa Monica airport in 2029, the UFO was theorized by some to be a sign of alien displeasure. The airport is an important fueling station for aviation now, will be a principal refueling spot for alien aircraft in the future. Others say it was a sign of displeasure with Donald Trump era policy on illegal aliens.
The FAA did not return our call asking for commentary on the story.

Scientists have confirmed the existence of a “lost continent” under the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius that was left-over by the break-up of the supercontinent, Gondwana, which started about 200 million years ago.
The piece of crust, which was subsequently covered by young lava during volcanic eruptions on the island, seems to be a tiny piece of ancient continent, which broke off from the island of Madagascar, when Africa, India, Australia and Antarctica split up and formed the Indian Ocean.
“We are studying the break-up process of the continents, in order to understand the geological history of the planet,” says Wits geologist, Professor Lewis Ashwal, lead author on the paper “Archaean zircons in Miocene oceanic hotspot rocks establish ancient continental crust beneath Mauritius”, published in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
By studying the mineral, zircon, found in rocks spewed up by lava during volcanic eruptions, Ashwal and his colleagues Michael Wiedenbeck from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) and Trond Torsvik from the University of Oslo, guest scientist at GFZ, have found that remnants of this mineral were far too old to belong on the island of Mauritius.
“Earth is made up of two parts – continents, which are old, and oceans, which are “young”. On the continents you find rocks that are over four billion years old, but you find nothing like that in the oceans, as this is where new rocks are formed,” explains Ashwal. “Mauritius is an island, and there is no rock older than 9 million years old on the island. However, by studying the rocks on the island, we have found zircons that are as old as 3 billion years.”
Zircons are minerals that occur mainly in granites from the continents. They contain trace amounts of uranium, thorium and lead, and due to the fact that they survive geological process very well, they contain a rich record of geological processes and can be dated extremely accurately.
“The fact that we have found zircons of this age proves that there are much older crustal materials under Mauritius that could only have originated from a continent,” says Ashwal.
This is not the first time that zircons that are billions of years old have been found on the island. A study done in 2013 has found traces of the mineral in beach sand. However, this study received some criticism, including that the mineral could have been either blown in by the wind, or carried in on vehicle tyres or scientists’ shoes.
“The fact that we found the ancient zircons in rock (6-million-year-old trachyte), corroborates the previous study and refutes any suggestion of wind-blown, wave-transported or pumice-rafted zircons for explaining the earlier results,” says Ashwal.
Ashwal suggests that there are many pieces of various sizes of “undiscovered continent”, collectively called “Mauritia”, spread over the Indian Ocean, left over by the breakup of Gondwanaland.
“According to the new results, this break-up did not involve a simple splitting of the ancient super-continent of Gondwana, but rather, a complex splintering took place with fragments of continental crust of variable sizes left adrift within the evolving Indian Ocean basin.”
Gondwanaland
Gondwanaland is a super-continent that existed more than 200 million years ago and contained rocks as old as 3.6 billion years old, before it split up into what are now the continents of Africa, South America, Antarctica, India and Australia. The split-up occurred because of the geological process of plate tectonics. This is the process where the ocean basin is in continuous motion, and moves between 2 cm and 11 cm per year. Continents ride on the plates that make up the ocean floor, which causes the movement of the continents.
Mauritius
Known as a tropical holiday destination, Mauritius is a volcanic island, formed by the eruption of volcanoes starting at about nine million years ago. The island forms part of a string of islands, formed by a stationary hotspot (volcano), presently located at Réunion Island. Originating from deep within the earth, the hotspot stays stationary while the ocean’s tectonic plates move across it, creating a string of volcanic islands.

Het continent zou India en Madagaskar ooit met elkaar verbonden hebben. Wetenschappers hebben kristallen bestudeerd die via een vulkaan aan het oppervlak zijn beland.
Professor Lewis Ashwal van de Universiteit van de Witwatersrand in Zuid-Afrika ontdekte in gestolde lava zirkonen die 2,5 tot 3 miljard oud bleken te zijn.
Continentale plaat
De aanwezigheid van het mineraal duidt op de aanwezigheid van een verloren continent, dat tussen Madagaskar en China lag.
Mauritius ligt bovenop deze oeroude continentale plaat, aldus Ashwal in Nature Communications.
Vermoed wordt dat de plaat door vulkaanuitbarstingen en aardbevingen uit elkaar is gescheurd.
Niet voor het eerst
De wetenschappers ontdekten dat de zirkonen veel te oud waren om aan het eiland Mauritius toe te kunnen behoren.
Het is niet voor het eerst dat de mineralen zijn gevonden op het eiland. In 2013 werden sporen ervan ook al gevonden in zand.
Verspreid
Professor Ashwal suggereert dat vele stukken van het ‘onontdekte continent’, dat Mauritia is gedoopt, verspreid liggen over de Indische Oceaan.
De Engelse bioloog Philip Lutley Sclater noemde dit verloren continent in de Indische Oceaan Lemurië.

Wat hebben hooggeplaatste politici te zoeken op Antarctica? In 2009 stuurde toenmalig president Obama zijn vicepresident Joe Biden op een ‘belangrijke en speciale missie’ naar Antarctica die ‘tot wel vier jaar kon duren’.
Eind vorig jaar reisde de toenmalige Amerikaanse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken John Kerry af naar het continent. Begin vorig jaar bezocht patriarch Kirill Antarctica als eerste orthodoxe leider.
Onlangs werd er nog een vreemde structuur ontdekt op Antarctica die experts voor een raadsel stelt.
Operation Highjump
“Ik denk niet dat Kirill naar de Zuidpool is gegaan om pinguïns te kijken,” zegt Steve Quayle, schrijver van het boek Empire Beneath the Ice. “Iets of iemand ontbiedt deze leiders.”
De meeste mensen weten volgens Quayle niet dat de VS in 1947 een vloot naar Antarctica stuurde onder leiding van admiraal Byrd. Deze missie staat bekend als Operation Highjump.
“We kregen daar een pak slaag,” aldus de schrijver. “Onze vliegtuigen werden geconfronteerd met vliegende schotels.”
Orders
Hij denkt dat de Zuidpool een belangrijke rol speelt in dit geheel vanwege de geavanceerde technologie van het Derde Rijk.
“Ze kwamen onder het ijs in contact met wezens waar [raketgeleerde] Wernher von Braun en anderen voor hun dood vaak naar verwezen,” zei hij.
Als je alle punten met elkaar verbindt kom je tot de ontdekking dat er een entiteit of een groep entiteiten is die denken dat ze geavanceerde technologie hebben en orders geven aan politieke en religieuze leiders, aldus Quayle.
Verdraaien
Volgens hem verdraaien de machthebbers de geschiedenis. “Wereldleiders hebben nooit geloofd dat Hitler in die bunker is gestorven.”
