Plasma Blob Phenomena Shows Characteristics Of Life
In 2003 research in plasma physics found a phenomenon that shows the characteristics of self-organizing life. This discovery is all about something called “Complex Space Charge Configurations (CSCCs)”. Found in the form of well-defined nearly spherical luminous gaseous bodies known as anode glows and more recently as fireball are phenomena frequently observed in plasma devices. This discovery, when considered in the light of the discovery of bacteria that consumes electricity and excretes electricity directly with no need for all that inefficient biological process stuff, has some interesting implications
This is not science fiction but science fact. The “Big Book of Universal Life” may have more pages than once believed possible. The tree of life will eventually be a shrub when we learn all the ways that life is possible. Mircea Sanduloviciu and his colleagues at Cuza University have created blobs of plasma gas that can grow, replicate and communicate – meeting most of the currently understood requirements for biological cells. Without inherited material, they cannot be described as alive by our narrow definition, but the researchers believe these curious spheres may offer a radically new explanation for how life began here on Earth and possibly on other planets.
Is the drive for self-organization innate in the Universe? Is it like how fractal mathematics seems to be ingrained into the nature of our reality from the microscopic to the objects in the Universe the size of galaxies. Fractals and their special brand of organizations are found almost everywhere. Is there some self-organizing property of the Universe that is compatible or advantageous for life? Is there an invisible hand that creates the forces that are conducive to life formation? An emergent force that guides the formation of situations where life in the Universe can take hold? A force that permeates the Universe like fractal dimensionality apparently does?
If so, how and by what system of influence?
These questions are at this time beyond our science. That is why I am guessing not much has been published on this phenomena since 2003. No scientific avenue to explore next. It is a curiosity but an unactionable one. Does not mean that it was not an important discovery. Just one in which our current vision does not recognize the possibilities. The possible extrapolations of what significance this discovery might mean are in the eye of the beholder and the minds of the researcher.

Consisting from a nucleus protected from the surrounding plasma by an electrical double layer, the complexity reveals an internal structure and behaviour which remind us primitive organisms. Thus the complexity is not static but stationary open system in which continuous decay is constantly compensated by substance and energy from the surrounding plasma. Endowed with a special kind of memory the complexity can work as an intelligent multifunctional system and consequently it is also able to perform innovations after selective interaction with an environment in evolution. Most biologists think living cells arose out of a complex and lengthy evolution of chemicals that took millions of years, beginning with simple molecules through amino acids, primitive proteins and finally forming an organized structure. But if Mircea Sanduloviciu and his colleagues at Cuza University in Romania are right, the theory may have to be completely revised. They say cell-like self-organization can occur in a few microseconds. This is a level of order which happens at speeds unimagined.
One of the astonishing behavior of the CSCC is its ability to replicate by splitting in two independent CSCCs. Recently this phenomenon observed in plasma [11] was considered as an example of a self-replicating machine [12]…
The researchers studied environmental conditions similar to those that existed on the Earth before life began when the planet was enveloped in electric storms that caused ionized gasses called plasmas to form in the atmosphere. They inserted two electrodes into a chamber containing a low-temperature plasma of argon – a gas in which some of the atoms have been split into electrons and charged ions. They applied a high voltage to the electrodes, producing an arc of energy that flew across the gap between them, like a miniature lightning strike.
Sanduloviciu says this electric spark caused a high concentration of ions and electrons to accumulate at the positively charged electrode, which spontaneously formed spheres. Each sphere had a boundary made up of two layers – an outer layer of negatively charged electrons and an inner layer of positively charged ions. Trapped inside the boundary was an inner nucleus of gas atoms. The amount of energy in the initial spark governed their size and lifespan. Sanduloviciu grew spheres from a few micrometers up to three centimeters in diameter.
A distinct boundary layer that confines and separates an object from its environment is one of the four main criteria generally used to define living cells. Sanduloviciu decided to find out if his cells met the other criteria: the ability to replicate, to communicate information, and to metabolize and grow. He found that the spheres could replicate by splitting into two. Under the right conditions, they also got bigger, taking up neutral argon atoms and splitting them into ions and electrons to replenish their boundary layers.
Our measurements demonstrate that the temperature inside CSCC is not much greater that the temperature of the surrounding plasma (in the order of tens of Celsius grades). Changing the nature of the gas it is possible to evidence that the CSCC is able to self-adapt to the new environmental conditions by performing innovations evidenced by changing its internal space charge configuration but also its dynamical behavior…
Finally, they could communicate information by emitting electromagnetic energy, making the atoms within other spheres vibrate at a particular frequency. The spheres are not the only self-organising systems to meet all of these requirements. But they are the first gaseous “cells”.
Sanduloviciu even thinks they could have been the first cells on Earth, arising within electric storms. “The emergence of such spheres seems likely to be a prerequisite for biochemical evolution,” he says.
Perhaps the most intriguing implications of Sanduloviciu’s work are for life on other planets. “The cell-like spheres we describe could be at the origin of other forms of life we have not yet considered,” he says. Which means our search for extraterrestrial life will need a drastic re-think. If this emergent behavior is a real force at work in the Cosmos is really good news for us. It could be another tertiary consideration when considering if life abounds in the Universe. We are now in the position to know, more possible ways than ever that life could take purchase. The more ways we can identify that life might form the more certain we can be that we are not alone. It is looking more and more like we are the latecomers to a really good cosmic party.

Mathematicians have created a new theory that could explain how universal disturbances move through space and time.
This field pattern theory could explain how gravitational waves move and answer seemingly unanswerable questions in quantum mechanics.
OF PATTERNS AND DISTURBANCES
Mathematicians from the University of Utah have developed a new mathematical theory that could explain how waves and other disturbances in the universe move through materials in varying conditions of space and time. They call it the field pattern theory, referring to characteristic patterns that cover how disturbances react to changing conditions. “When you open the doors to a new area, you don’t know where it will go,” said Graeme Milton, first author of the study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A.
Disturbances occur fairly regularly in the fabric of space-time that makes up the universe. The recently confirmed existence of gravitational waves from Einstein’s Theory of Relativity shows that these disturbances can permeate through both space and time. But what we don’t yet fully understand is how this happens, especially because space-time is continuously shifting. This is what field patterns explain.
Obviously, we first need to understand what field patterns are. According to a press release from the University of Utah, there are two analogies to explain them; the first being a chessboard analogy. The black and white squares represent two distinct materials with different properties. The horizontal dimension represents space, while the vertical dimension represents time. A disturbance like a pulse of laser light moves through this board, forward in time and expanding in space, meeting boundaries between materials.
Field patterns describe the propagation of this pulse, which the authors tested and observed using computer simulations. Secondary author Ornella Mattei prefers a tree analogy, where the root is the initial point of disturbance. As time progresses, a disturbance moves up the tree, splitting and branches out as it encounters boundaries — which could be space, time, or the changing condition of materials.
UNDERSTANDING PARTICLES AND WAVES
“The idea of a field pattern is a little like a wave in one tree but a separate wave in a different tree,” Milton explained. “You can imagine in one tree there’s a wind blowing from one direction that ripples the trees one way. But the other tree, with its own separate sets of leaves, as if the wind is coming from a different direction.” Mattei added: “When you look at the field pattern after a sufficiently large period of time, you see that it’s basically periodic.”

This new mathematical model is still being tested for potential applications. But, as far as the authors are concerned, there is one obvious application: quantum mechanics; where particles and waves literally blur. Field patterns could answer some of the biggest questions in this field.
According to Milton, this model could shed light on the nature of matter’s fundamental components. One idea is that even the smallest fluctuations in space and time could give rise to field patterns that manifest as electrons and protons. “What we see as electrons, protons or quantum mechanical waves are manifestations of the fundamental super microscopic scale of these field patterns,” he said.
Obviously, the initial paper is just a first step. “Something may pop up from this,” said Milton. “What’s really fundamental, though, is going in a completely new direction.”

Nu als noodoplossing: luiers Ondanks de ietwat geestige naam van de wedstrijd, draaide de Space Poop Challenge wel degelijk om een serieuze zaak: hoe zullen astronauten - die in de toekomst waarschijnlijk voor zeer lange periodes aan een stuk in een ruimtepak zullen moeten verblijven - er toch nog in slagen om zich van ongewenste lichamelijke afvalstoffen te ontdoen?
Tot nu toe beperkt de tijd die een astronaut zich effectief in zo'n pak moet bevinden, zich meestal tot een tiental uur. Daardoor kon het fecaliënprobleem tot nog toe simpelweg opgelost worden door het dragen van volwassen luiers.
Mars en kolonies op de maan Als NASA binnenkort van start gaat met bemande reizen naar Mars en 'kolonies' op de maan dan zal die noodoplossing geen soelaas meer bieden. Om een 'sluitende uitweg' voor hun vestimentair probleem te vinden, riep NASA de hulp in van de rest van de wereld.
Het winnende voorstel ontwierp een 'tochtgat' in het ruimtepak waarlangs katheters en opblaasbare bedpannen kunnen worden doorgegeven
De uitdaging De uitdaging waar deelnemers aan de Space Poop Challenge voorstonden? Vind een manier om 144 uur aan human waste - oftewel een liter urine, 75 gram uitwerpselen en 80 milliliter menstruaal vocht - binnen de context van het ruimtepak te verwerken of het indien mogelijk zelfs te lozen.
Drie winnaars Uit het massief aantal inzendingen dat NASA op zijn complex raadsel aangeboden kreeg, koos het drie winnaars die elk aan de haal gingen met een flinke geldprijs.
'Tochtgat' Met stip op nummer één eindigde het theoretische ontwerp van dokter en medisch officier Tatcher Cardon. De mosterd voor zijn MACES Perineal Access & Toileting System (M-PATS) haalde hij uit de microchirurgische wereld: al jarenlang worden daar de meest ingewikkelde ingrepen gedaan aan de hand van minuscule buisjes en katheters. Cardons voorstel is dan ook om een luchtgat in het ruimtepak te ontwerpen, waarlangs katheters, opblaasbare bedpannen of zelfs een proper setje ondergoed gewoon kunnen worden doorgegeven.
Luchtstroom De tweede prijs ging naar een team dat zichzelf de Space Poop Unification of Doctors (SPUDs) doopte. Hun systeem draait op basis van luchtstroom die de urine en het menstruaal vocht rechtstreeks naar de achterzijde van het ondergoed van de astronaut stuwt, waar het meteen door een buisje kan wegvloeien naar een opslagplaats elders in het pak. De lucht die gebruikt zou worden om de druk te creëren, is afkomstig van de bewegingen die de astronaut maakt in zijn pak.
Nieuw soort ondergoed De derde prijs ten slotte ging naar Hugo Shelley die op de proppen kwam met een nieuw soort ondergoed. Het SWIMsuit zero gravity underwear gebruikt een katheter om de afvalstoffen van het lichaam te laten wegvloeien, in combinatie met een mechanisme om de fecaliën met vaste vorm compact samen te drukken en te ontsmetten.
Speciale vermelding Ook een heel aantal andere deelnemers kregen nog een 'speciale vermelding' voor hun design. Elk van de ontwerpen zou in de toekomst door NASA opgepikt kunnen worden en gebruikt in de toekomstige ontwerpen van hun ruimtegarderobe.
De legendarische Britse eerste minister Winston Churchill hield er een uitzonderlijk geloof op na voor zijn tijd. Dat blijkt uit een ongepubliceerd essay dat hij schreef in 1939, een jaar voor hij premier werd. Het document lag bijna 80 jaar stof te verzamelen in een Amerikaans museum in Fulton, Missouri. Tot de nieuwe directeur Timothy Riley het daar ontdekte. Deze week staat het in het toonaangevende wetenschappelijke tijdschrift Nature.
Het essay - 'Zijn we alleen in het universum?' - telt 11 pagina's en speelt met het idee dat er leven mogelijk is op andere planeten in ons zonnestelsel. En ook daarbuiten, vijf decennia voor de ontdekking van de eerste dergelijke planeten. Churchill wijst daarbij op het belang van vloeibaar water en zones in zonnestelsels die niet te warm of te koud zijn voor leven. In ons eigen zonnestelsel noemt hij Mars en Venus als mogelijke plaatsen waar leven kan bestaan.
Verrassing Het document werd vorig jaar gevonden door de nieuwe directeur van het US National Churchill Museum, Timothy Riley. Die speelde het door aan de Israëlische astrofysicus Mario Livio. Die laatste publiceerde het nu in het tijdschrift Science. Livio spreekt van een "grote verrassing", hoewel eerder al bekend was dat Churchill veel interesse had in wetenschap en zelfs sciencefiction. Zo was hij de eerste premier die een wetenschapsadviseur aanstelde.
Het stuk zou bedoeld geweest zijn voor 'News of the World', maar werd nooit gepubliceerd. "Ik ben niet zo onder de indruk van het succes van onze beschaving dat ik denk dat we de enige plek in ons immense universum zijn waar leven en denkende wezens bestaan. Meer nog, dat we de mentaal en fysiek de hoogst ontwikkelde levensvorm zijn in het uitspansel van tijd en ruimte", staat er onder meer te lezen.
Maan Opmerkelijk: Churchill voorspelde dat de mens de maan zou bereiken. Waar hij zich wel vergiste, was in zijn idee dat planeten gevormd worden door gas van een ster dat wordt afgescheiden als een andere ster passeert. Die stelling van astrofysicus James Jeans uit 1917 werd intussen ontkracht.
Het essay werd geschreven een jaar na een radioprogramma rond 'The War Of The Worlds' van HG Wells, door Orson Welles. Dat veroorzaakte grote paniek in de VS, waar luisteraars dachten dat ze écht aangevallen werden door marsmannetjes. Churchill verordende tijdens zijn tweede ambtstermijn in 1952 ook dat waarnemingen van ufo's om die reden geheim gehouden moesten worden.

Planetenjagers hebben met een telescoop in Hawaï 60 nieuwe planeten ontdekt in de buurt van de onze. Eén daarvan wordt omschreven als een superaarde, een planeet waarop leven mogelijk is.

Opvallende gelijkenissen
Met behulp van beschikbaar gestelde software kan iedereen nu in de meetgegevens op zoek naar aanwijzingen voor de aanwezigheid van planeten.
De onderzoekers ontdekten dat enkele van de planeten opvallende gelijkenissen vertonen met de onze.
Superaarde Gliese 411-b heeft een bergachtig oppervlak en werd gevonden in het op drie na dichtste zonnestelsel bij de aarde.
Fascinerend
De planeet draait rond de rode dwergster GJ411, ook bekend als Lalande 21185, op ruim acht lichtjaar in het sterrenbeeld Grote Beer. De superaarde heeft een omlooptijd van nog geen 10 dagen.
“Het is fascinerend om te weten dat alle sterren waar we naar kijken planeten zouden kunnen hebben die om hen heen draaien,” aldus onderzoeker Mikko Tuomi tegenover The Independent.
“Astronomen waren daar zelfs vijf jaar geleden nog niet overtuigd van,” voegde hij toe.

Wow, this little bugger flew right past the SOHO/NASA imaging satellite this week and while it was doing it, it curved, which is impossible for meteors or asteroids to accomplish. Found by Paranormal Crucible of Youtube, this video shows us the exact shape and the incredible speed that these UFO use out in space. It is my opinion that his UFO was much closer to the satellite and not really 10X the size of earth...which the video shows. I and Streetcap1 have both seen a lot of rainbow neon color UFOs that are this shape that shoot around the space station cam when the station is in the dark side. Could they be tiny alien drones sent out into space by the millions to scatter and record data? Or...and it would be so cool if this was it...are these live biological life forms? From the speed and shape, I would have to go with tiny alien drones that have advanced AI. How tiny? About half a meter or less. Scott C. Waring

I have often wondered about the Voyager probe shut down and this video sums up most of our worries about it. When it shut itself down, many of us suddenly thought back to that Star Trek 1979 movie where V'ger returned after making contact with aliens. Lets hope nothing like that happens, but if it does, hopefully when Voyager returns we will be ready to communicate with it and learn from it about the alien species that found it.

Here’s one interesting footage of a triangular-shaped craft that was seen and recorded over Kenner, Louisiana. This happened on 20th December 2016 and was just submitted to MUFON.
Witness report:
I first heard a very loud booming type bass sound about 10 minutes prior to seeing the triangle shaped UFO outside the front of my house. Not sure if this loud vibrating noise has anything to do with the UFO sighting but it is still occurring outside right now. The sound is strange because we are not able to figure out where it is coming from and normally it is easy to tell where a sound like this is originating from. As soon as I went outside in my front yard to listen to the booming sound a large triangle shaped UFO appeared in the northern sky above me moving in a westerly direction. The UFO had three white lights in the shape of a triangle with other colored flashing lights. There was no sound coming from the UFO and it was NOT a airplane, helicopter and or drone. I know this because I live close to the airport and I see planes all day and night and none of them look like this unknown object. I have video footage of the UFO which I will include in this report. I also posted this to my subscribers on youtube since what I witnessed tonight I find to be very interesting UFO footage! It is RARE to capture up close video footage of a triangle UFO! I had a very interesting encounter back on March 2, 2007 which involved a triangle UFO in the sky near me. That very interesting encounter which I reported here on MUFON back in 2007 occurred about 10 miles from where I witnessed this UFO tonight.

The UFO sighting that took place over a town in Normandy, France was caught on camera. A witness living in the area recorded the strange event after getting across the UFO floating over his village on 11th February 2017.
He captured as much of the bizarre incident as he could before the battery of his camera phone he utilized to film the UFO went empty.
The UFO sighting video shows a silent floating object with several flaring lights seemingly connected to the mysterious object as it hovers over the French coastal town.
A copy of the clip was posted to YouTube on February 10 and received thousands of views. Viewers have lots of mixed reactions since it was posted online.
Some believe the lights were just fires on a hillside filled with haze, fog or mist. They think it was a mountain in the background and the lights were fires.
Others wonder why the phones or cameras being used to capture videos usually died.
Many viewers say it was a UFO until proven otherwise.

Winston Churchill had something to offer besides “blood, toil, tears and sweat”: A willingness to consider the existence life on other planets.
A newly discovered essay called “Are We Alone in the Universe?” that Churchill started writing in 1939, just weeks after Britain entered World War II and before becoming prime minister, suggests that the possibility of sentient life on other planets was on his mind.
Churchill revised the essay in the 1950s, but it was never published. Sometime in the 1980s, it was given to the National Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri, and was discovered just last year by the institution’s director, Timothy Riley, according to the BBC.
In the piece, Churchill explains that life can survive only in regions where temperatures are between a few degrees of frost and the boiling point of water.
He then speculates that Venus and Mars are the only other planets in our solar system in that habitable zone.
However, Churchill also explains why life on other planets is more likely than not:
“With hundreds of thousands of nebulae, each containing thousands of millions of suns, the odds are enormous that there must be immense numbers which possess planets whose circumstances would not render life impossible.”
Churchill also refuses to be so arrogant as to think that humans are the highest evolution of sentient life:
“I, for one, am not so immensely impressed by the success we are making of our civilization here that I am prepared to think we are the only spot in this immense universe which contains living, thinking creatures, or that we are the highest type of mental and physical development which has ever appeared in the vast compass of space and time.”
“The most amazing thing is that he started this essay when Europe was on the brink of war and there he is, musing about a question about a scientific topic that is really a question out of curiosity,” he said.
Livio and Riley hope others get to read Churchill’s piece, but it will remain unpublished until copyright issues can be sorted out, according to the BBC.

Dat blijkt uit een essay dat hij in 1939 schreef, maar dat nooit gepubliceerd werd en nu is teruggevonden en bestudeerd.
Het essay met de werktitel ‘Are We Alone in Space?‘ is elf pagina’s lang. Churchill zette het kort voor het uitbreken van de Tweede Wereldoorlog op papier. Waarschijnlijk wilde hij het populair-wetenschappelijke stuk in een krant publiceren. Maar zover kwam het nooit. In de jaren ’50 paste hij het stuk nog wat aan – zo veranderde hij de titel naar ‘Are We Alone in the Universe?‘ – maar wederom ging het nooit ter perse.
SCHRIJVER
Churchill schreef veel en graag. Daarbij schuwde hij de wetenschappelijke onderwerpen niet. Naast buitenaards leven schreef hij ook over onderwerpen als evolutie en kernfusie.
Herontdekt Enkele decennia later kwam het essay in de archieven van het US National Churchill Museum in Fulton (Missouri) terecht. En lang leek het essay gedoemd om vergeten te worden. Tot de directeur van het museum het vorig jaar herontdekte en afleverde bij onderzoeker Mario Livio. Livio bestudeerde het essay en onthult in het blad Nature de gedachten die de beroemde Britse staatsman over buitenaards leven had.
Aliens
Churchill leek aardig overtuigd te zijn van het bestaan van (intelligente) aliens. “Ik ben zelf niet zodanig onder de indruk van het succes dat we van onze beschaving hier (op aarde, red.) maken dat ik bereid ben om aan te nemen dat dit de enige plek in het immense universum is dat levende, denkende wezens bevat.”
Kennis Maar die uitspraak is niet direct het meest indrukwekkende aspect van Churchills essay, zo stelt Livio. Hij stelt vooral respect te hebben voor de wetenschappelijke kennis van Churchill. Een deel van die kennis is anno 2017 nog altijd niet achterhaald. Zo stelt Churchill bijvoorbeeld dat water onontbeerlijk is voor levensvormen zoals wij die kennen. Anno 2017 laten we ons in de zoektocht naar buitenaards leven nog altijd leiden door de aanwezigheid van water. Ook merkt Churchill op dat leven alleen kan overleven op plekken die niet te koud (hooguit enkele graden onder nul) en niet te warm (onder het kookpunt van water) zijn. Vandaag de dag noemen we dat de ‘leefbare zone’: een denkbeeldige zone rondom een ster waarin de temperaturen niet te hoog zijn (en water dus niet kan verdampen), maar ook niet te laag zijn (en water dus niet kan bevriezen). Daarnaast haalt Churchill ook het belang van een atmosfeer aan en wijst erop dat een hemellichaam een bepaalde zwaartekracht moet bezitten om een atmosfeer vast te kunnen houden. Op basis van al die overwegingen stelt Churchill dat Mars en Venus – naast de aarde – de enige plaatsen in ons zonnestelsel zijn waar we buitenaards leven zouden kunnen aantreffen. De planeten in de buitenste regionen van het zonnestelsel sluit hij uit, omdat ze te koud zijn. Mercurius is te warm aan de dagzijde en te koud aan de nachtzijde en de maan en planetoïden hebben een te beperkte zwaartekracht en kunnen dus geen atmosfeer vasthouden.
MARS, VENUS EN EXOPLANETEN
De vragen die Churchill kort voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog bezighielden, houden vandaag de dag vele astrobiologen wereldwijd bezig. De zoektocht naar leven op Mars is in volle gang en simulaties wijzen erop dat ook Venus in het verleden leefbaar is geweest. Daarnaast achten onderzoekers het bestaan van buitenaards leven ook mogelijk op manen zoals Europa en Enceladus. En naar verwachting kunnen we met de volgende generatie telescopen ook in de atmosfeer van exoplaneten op zoek gaan naar sporen van leven.
Exoplaneten Daarnaast voorspelt Churchill – decennia voor we de eerste exoplaneet ontdekken – al het bestaan van planeten buiten ons zonnestelsel. Hij wijst er in zijn essay op dat onze ster slechts één ster in een miljarden sterren tellend sterrenstelsel is. “Ik ben niet zo verwaand dat ik denk dat mijn zon de enige met een verzameling planeten is.” Churchill schrijft bovendien te verwachten dat exoplaneten groot genoeg zijn om vloeibaar water en een atmosfeer te bezitten en dat er daarnaast ook nog exemplaren zullen zijn die zich op de juiste afstand (in de leefbare zone) van hun ster bevinden. Churchill benadrukt dat dergelijke planeten zich echter op zo’n grote afstand van de aarde bevinden dat we wellicht nooit te weten komen of ze daadwerkelijk levende wezens bevatten.
Uit het essay blijkt dat Churchill vertrouwd was met recente onderzoeken van onder meer astrofysicus James Jeans en astronoom Edwin Hubble (die stelde dat er naast de Melkweg nog veel meer sterrenstelsels zijn). Bovendien blijkt de staatsman te redeneren zoals het een wetenschapper betaamt. Het raakt Livio, die opmerkt dat veel politici vandaag de dag zo anders zijn. “In een tijd waarin moderne politici wetenschap vermijden, vind ik het ontroerend om me een leider te herinneren die zo diepgaand met wetenschap bezig was.”

1. Diamond in the Rough
The Brazilian state of Acre is home to more than 450 mysterious earthworks called geoglyphs, most built sometime between 2,000 and 650 years ago. Archaeologists have found that these sites weren't villages and probably weren't fortifications; more likely, they were ritual sites where people gathered temporarily, perhaps during harvest times. 2. Earthworks revealed
Acre's geolgyphs were hidden by forest until ranching and other activities led to massive deforestation in the 1980s. An analysis of the ancient vegetation at two sites, Jaco Sá and Fazenda Colorada, found that humans started clearing the forests by burning at least 4,000 years ago. The sites were dominated by bamboo forest for at least 6,000 years, but humans encouraged useful species like palms to grow in cleared areas. The geoglyphs were likely constructed in small temporarily cleared areas, University of Sao Paulo archaeologist Jenny Watling and colleagues reported Feb. 6 in the journal PNAS.

3. Hidden shapes
Circular geoglyphs are visible from the air in deforested areas of Acre state in western Brazil. Researchers were surprised to find that when the geoglyphs were built around 2,000 years ago, the forest canopy was present, meaning that there had not been widespread deforestation by ancient people. Instead, people seem to have cleared small areas to encourage colonization by useful species like palm trees, which provided food and building material.

4. Digging ditches
The Brazilian geoglyphs are huge. Many of the ditches are as wide as 36 feet (11 meters) and as deep as 13 feet (4 m). They can be between 330 and 980 feet (100 to 300 meters) in diameter. There are few artifacts found within the geoglyphs, but archaeologists have discovered decorated pots, smashed in place, near some entrances to the earthworks. These discoveries suggest that offerings were made or rituals conducted within and around the geoglyphs, the University of Sao Paulo's Watling told Live Science.

5. Double Circle
In the new PNAS study, researchers took soil samples from holes 5 feet (1.5 m) deep and analyzed chemical traces of the ancient vegetation that once grew near two geoglyph sites. They found that the sites had been dominated by bamboo forest for 6,000 years at minimum, and that humans began clearing areas of forest with fire 4,000 years ago. Palm trees moved into the cleared areas, and persisted for thousands of years, suggesting that humans were clearing away the slower-growing trees that typically take over from palms in a natural forest progression.

6. Ancient remnants
Little is known about the people who built these impressive earthen designs. Archaeologists believe that networks of loosely affiliated peoples gathered at these sites sporadically. The new research on forest clearing suggests that the Amazon has been altered by humans for thousands of years and that the forests are not pristine. (Though modern deforestation dwarfs what ancient people did with stone axes and fire.)

7. Fazenda Atlantica
Geoglyphs at a site known as Fazenda Atlantica in Acre state, western Brazil. Ancient people may have practiced "agroforestry" here, a method of encouraging useful species to colonize cleared areas while removing less-useful plants that compete with those species. These findings should "serve to highlight the ingenuity of past subsistence regimes that did not lead to forest degradation, and the importance of indigenous knowledge for finding more sustainable land-use alternatives," to modern-day clear-cutting, the University of Sao Paulo's Watling said in a statement.

8. Dots mark the spot
Archaeologists found that after humans abandoned the geoglyphs around 650 years ago, palm species declined and a more natural forest ecology returned. However, there are still signs of human management echoing in the forests. The forest near the Jaco Sa geoglyph has a higher-than-average proportion of species useful to humans today, Watling and her colleagues found — nine out of its 10 most abundant species are used by people. This may be the ecological remnant of thousands of years of human forest management.

A two-decade long radical velocity-planet hunting program has compiled almost 61,000 individual measurements made of more than 1,600 stars.
That's a considerable amount of data to comb through – so the research team made the data set available to the public.
GRAVITATIONAL WOBBLES
NASA’s Kepler space telescope holds the record when it comes to candidate and confirmed exoplanets — to date, it has identified more than 5,000. To scan the universe for these alien planets, Kepler uses what’s called the “transit method.” Basically, Kepler watches out for the brightness dips that occur when a planet crosses the face of the star it orbits.
This isn’t the only method to catch exoplanets. The High Resolution Echelle Spectrometer (HIRES) instrument at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii detects radial velocity instead of brightness dips. This radial velocity method searches stars for signs of gravitational wobbles induced by orbiting planets. HIRES was part of a two-decade long radical velocity-planet hunting program and it has compiled almost 61,000 individual measurements made of more than 1,600 stars.
“HIRES was not specifically optimized to do this type of exoplanet detective work, but has turned out to be a workhorse instrument of the field,” said Steve Vogt, from the University of California Santa Cruz, who built the instrument. “I am very happy to contribute to science that is fundamentally changing how we view ourselves in the universe.”

From this huge amount of data, a team of researchers led by Paul Butler of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C., identified more than 100 possible exoplanets. Specifically, the researchers identified 60 candidate planets, plus 54 more that require furter examination. They published their study in the The Astronomical Journal.
“We were very conservative in this paper about what counts as an exoplanet candidate and what does not,” researcher Mikko Tuomi explained, “and even with our stringent criteria, we found over 100 new likely planet candidates.” Among the candidate exoplanets, one could be orbiting the fourth-closest star (GJ 411) to our Sun just about 8.3 light years away. It’s not an Earth-twin however, as this potential planet has an orbital period that’s equivalent to just 10 days.
COLLABORATIVE EXPLORATION
There’s still a considerable amount of data to comb through. So, together with their findings, Butler’s team made the HIRES data set available to the public. “One of our key goals in this paper is to democratize the search for planets,” explained team member Greg Laughlin of Yale. “Anyone can download the velocities published on our website and use the open source Systemic software package and try fitting planets from the data.”
It’s certainly a noble idea and a timely one. “I think this paper sets a precedent for how the community can collaborate on exoplanet detection and follow-up”, said team-member Johanna Teske. “With NASA’s TESS mission on the horizon, which is expected to detect 1000+ planets orbiting bright, nearby stars, exoplanet scientists will soon have a whole new pool of planets to follow up.”
One of the most mysterious phenomena in today’s UFO. An international team of astronomers has found 60 new planets orbiting stars close to Earth’s solar system, including a rocky “super Earth.”
The experts also found evidence of an additional 54 planets, bringing the potential discovery of new worlds to 114.
One planet in particular, Gliese 411b, has been generating plenty of attention. Described as a “hot super Earth with a rocky surface,” Gliese 411b is located in the fourth-nearest star system to the Sun, making it the third-nearest planetary system to the Sun, according to the U.K.’s University of Hertfordshire, which participated in the research. Gliese 411b (also known as GJ 411b or Lalande 21185) orbits the star Gliese 411 (or GJ 411).
Despite the “super Earth” label, Dr. Mikko Tuomi from University of Hertfordshire’s Centre for Astrophysics told Fox News that Gliese 411b is too hot for life to exist on its surface.
Gliese 411 and Gliese 411b are located 8 light years from earth. A light year, which measures distance in space, equals 6 trillion miles.
By way of comparison, the recently-discovered Earth-like planet Proxima b, which orbits the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, is about 4 light years from Earth. A red dwarf is a relatively cool small star.
Tuomi, who was also involved in the discovery of Proxima b, told Fox News that the latest batch of planets marks a significant discovery. “Over the recent years it has been established as a scientific fact that there are more planets in the Universe than there are stars. This means that virtually every star has a planet, or several of them, orbiting it,” he explained, via email. “Our discovery of dozens of new nearby planets highlights this fact. But it also does more. We are now moving on from simply discovering these worlds.”
“In essence, we are now building an observational roadmap for future giant telescopes that can be used to image some or even most of these newly found worlds,” Tuomi added. “This is like mapping an archipelago so that we are familiar with it in the future when taking a closer look at what its islands actually look like.”
The 60 new planets are found orbiting stars that are mostly some 20 to 300 light years away, according to Tuomi.
The discoveries are based on observations taken over 20 years by U.S. astronomers using the Keck-I telescope in Hawaii as part of the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey. During the course of the research, scientists obtained almost 61,000 observations of 1,600 stars, which are now available to the public.
Sponsored by NASA and the National Science Foundation, the Lick-Carnegie Exoplanet Survey harnesses the talents of planet hunters from a number of organizations, including the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz and the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C.
The Carnegie Institution of Science also led a team that included MIT to release the data on the almost 61,000 observations of 1,600 stars.
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – A bright light streaking across the sky captured the attention of several Bay Area residents early Tuesday, but it was not a UFO.
The Navy issued a statement saying it was conducting missile tests off the California coast.
“Navy Strategic Systems Programs conducted scheduled Trident II (D5) missile test flights at sea from an Ohio Class SSBN, in the Pacific Test Range offthe coast of California,” the statement said. ”This morning, there were two missiles launched.”
The Navy said such tests were vital to maintain its readiness. One launch took place at 3:30 a.m. PST and a second at 6:20 a.m. A submarine off the coast launched the Trident II D-5 missiles — a three-stage missile with a 4,000-mile range.
Navy spokesman John Daniels said residents likely saw stage one, which lasts about a minute, and possibly part of stage two.
“All missile test flights were conducted from sea, flew over the sea, and landed in the sea. At no time did the missiles fly over land,” the Navy statement continued. “All missiles are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean. The missiles were not armed.”
But for the hours before the statement was issued, the bright light had led to an active debate on social media.

THE US Navy has released a statement saying the testing of two Trident missiles was "not in response to any world events" after scores of people filmed a mysterious light trailing through the night sky.
Some people were even left convinced they may have witnesses an alien UFO.
Videos of the bizarre sight over California yesterday were uploaded to social media and even sent to investigators at the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) as a possible alien sighting.
The footage shows from various locations a bright point in the sky with a beam of light radiating below it.
In one video, a woman shrieked 'It's ET!', while others claimed on social media to have seen an alien craft.
But, in response, the US Navy confirmed it carried out missile tests off the coast at 3.30am and 6.20am local time yesterday.

Many people reported that they felt the missile over California was a UFO.
The Navy issued a statement saying the missiles "were not armed and did not fly over land".
It said they fired two Trident II D-5 missiles.
The statement said: "All missile test flights were conducted from sea, flew over the sea, and landed in the sea. At no time did the missiles fly over land.
"All missiles are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean. The missiles were not armed."
The Navy also said they were routine tests and not in response to any "ongoing world activities".

Witness report to MUFON
But that failed to stop mounting speculation over what it was.
US-based MUFON is the world's biggest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research and keeps a database of global sightings.
One witness in Citrus Heights, California, wrote to MUFON: "I looked to my left and saw a bright white light with what looked like a cone shaped mist of fog.
"It then emitted a bright spotlight towards the ground. I thought it was a helicopter but as I kept looking I did not see any flashing lights.
At one point I saw a plane fly by it and could clearly see the planes flashing lights. When the object turned off its spotlight I decided to try to catch a video of it."
Another witness in Auburn, California, wrote: "When I really focused on it I could see a cone-shaped vapour trail emitting form
behind the object.
"The object seemed to slightly change in flight direction, it appeared to slowly drift from south to south-west and back again a few times."
Another report from Vallejo, California, included a video of a "glowing bullet-like object that left a cone-shaped cloud.
And, a fourth witness in Pebble Beach, California, who snapped it, said the object looked like "a star, then a comet, then a search helicopter, before it dissolved into space."

They are in their 50s now but the children of Broad Haven in west Wales still recall every scary detail of the chilly February lunchtime in 1977 when they saw a UFO land in the playing field next to their school.
It was a shiny grey torpedo shape, its upper dome topped by a pulsating red light – and some of them say a silver-clad spaceman emerged from the craft.
Headmaster Ralph Llewellyn was convinced it was a prank so he sat the 14 children down under exam conditions and asked them to describe what they’d witnessed – and to his astonishment their drawings were remarkably similar.

Forty years on it is clear this was just the first of a spate of sightings.
A few days later a teacher and three dinner ladies saw the UFO and as winter turned to spring along the rugged Pembrokeshire coast, locals reported lights hovering in the sky, a strange being in a metallic suit, animals cowering in the fields and ghostly figures peering into farmhouse windows.
The Ministry of Defence sent a man to speak to the children because the school was close to RAF Brawdy, although for 30 years the MoD denied it had conducted an official inquiry and said there was no threat to security even though it was the height of the Cold War.

Only in 2015 when secret documents in the national archives were featured in a book called The Watchers was it confirmed that a top-level inquiry had taken place.
Among documents uncovered by author Neil Spring was a letter from the head of the MoD’s S4 wing to the RAF’s internal police force.
The S4 chief wrote: “I have not even told the minister I am consulting you,” and called for a “discreet enquiry” after expressing bewilderment at the number of apparently “level-headed” witnesses to the strange activity.
Once the children’s experience was publicised in local newspapers the area became a magnet for UFO hunters who tagged it the Broad Haven Triangle.
Two months later Rosa Granville, owner of the Haven Fort Hotel, was in bed at 2.30am when she was woken by strange noises and lights.
She said she saw an “upside-down saucer” next to the hotel and two “faceless humanoid” creatures with pointed heads.
She told BBC Wales: “There was so much heat my face felt burned. There was light coming from it and flames of all colours.
Then [the creatures] came out of these flames.” Mrs Granville fi red off a letter to her MP Nicholas Edwards in which she said the incident left her “agitated and disturbed and not the least bit desirous of another encounter”.
She went on: “I would be pleased to hear of an explanation, it would greatly help to relieve the sense of shock I feel since my encounter.”
At Ripperston Farm a few miles away Billy Coombs and his wife Pauline reported a series of strange events scaring their cattle.
Mrs Coombs said she was driving her children to school one day when their car was followed by what looked like “a rugby ball that was on fire”.
Then one night the Coombs dialed 999 when a 7ft-tall figure wearing “a spacesuit” appeared at their sitting room window.
The constable who drove out to their farmhouse said later that in 26 years’ service “that was the most frightened family I have ever been to see”.
Only one child has spoken at length about the school UFO.

David Davies, who was 10 at the time, gave writer Spring a statement three years ago in which he said: “The object was pearlescent silvery-grey, approximately 40ft long, torpedo/cigar-shaped with an upper domed section that covered the central third of the vehicle and which was topped with a red pulsating light.
"I was the last of a dozen or so children to see the object on that day.”
In an interview later he said: “The sighting, despite only lasting a few seconds, is burned on my memory like a photograph. I’ve spent my entire life and countless thousands of pounds trying to find answers about what we saw.
“It has been a lifetime’s fascination driven by a desire to get to the truth. My personal inclination is that our particular sighting had a terrestrial origin. However I have never ruled anything out.
"Our sighting was not the last visit to the school though. Unbeknownst to the children and most of the small community, the craft returned a few days later and was on this occasion seen by a teacher and three of the canteen staff.
“I have never in the last 38 years exaggerated or sensationalised the account of what I saw and have never suggested that what we saw was of extra-terrestrial origin.

“Many suggestions have been made that what we saw was either an agricultural vehicle or an aircraft from nearby RAF Brawdy. I’d like to state categorically that this is not the case as the majority of the children at the school, myself included, came from farming backgrounds and would have been able to identify any agricultural vehicle and because of Brawdy’s proximity we were also familiar with almost every RAF aircraft in the skies.”
After researching his book, Spring said: “I visited Broad Haven a sceptic and came away convinced that some of the locals knew far more about the mysterious occurrences than they are willing to reveal.”
So was it all a hoax?
Emlyn Williams, organiser of a conference to mark the 40th anniversary, said: “One child can lie but can a whole class?
"Over 40 years at least one of them might have come forward to say they made it up – but they haven’t.” Broad Haven had a range of military bases within 40 miles. There was a top-secret rocket testing station at Aberporth while RAF Brawdy, near St David’s, trained pilots on Hawker Hunters.
The RAF station housed both a tactical weapons unit and a US navy “underwater research station” – which in reality tracked the movements of Soviet submarines.
It is known that Harrier jets, which take off and land vertically, flew there and three years ago a retired US serviceman revealed that search and rescue drills were carried out by men in silver fire suits.
The last word goes to the RAF.
A letter written by an officer to the MoD on June 3, 1977 ended: “I’m unable to offer any explanation but should a UFO arrive at RAF Brawdy we will charge normal landing fees and inform you immediately!”

US Navy confirms Trident II test off California coast, puts end to ‘UFO glow’ speculations (VIDEOS)
The US Navy has confirmed launching two Trident II missiles from submarines off the Californian coast after locals noticed a mysterious glow in the sky leading to speculation about possible UFO encounters.
“Navy Strategic Systems Programs conducted scheduled Trident II (D5) missile test flights at sea from an Ohio Class SSBN, in the Pacific Test Range off the coast of California,” the Navy said in an issued statement.
While the Trident missiles were launched at 3:30am and 6:20am, Navy spokesman John Daniels pointed out to local news stations that the mysterious spectacle was most likely produced by stage one of the launch which lasts about a minute, and possibly part of stage two.
“All missile test flights were conducted from sea, flew over the sea, and landed in the sea. At no time did the missiles fly over land,” the Navy statement said. “All missiles are tracked from multiple sources from launch until final impact in the ocean. The missiles were not armed.”
But before the Navy clarified the unexplained Tuesday sightings, the mysterious glow in the sky at 6:20 am dominated the social media chat where people shared photos of the alleged “UFO sighting.”
Prior to Tuesday’s launch, Trident II was successfully tested at least 161 times since the rocket’s completion in 1989. Trident D5 is a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the American and British navies. It serves as the primary seaborne nuclear deterrent.
The missiles are carried by 14 US Ohio and 4 British Vanguard-class submarines. Some 24 missiles arm the Ohio class subs while only 16 missiles are found on each Vanguard class. The three-stage ballistic missile can travel a nominal range of 4,000 nautical miles and is capable of engaging multiple targets.
