Spooky Radio Signals Might Be Intelligent Aliens, Scientists Say
The origin of fast radio bursts sweeping across outer space have puzzled scientists for years, but some scientists are examining the possibility that these millisecond-long radio emission flashes come from advanced alien technology in extragalactic civilizations. FRBs have traits that match up with artificial radio waves, and that might not be a coincidence.
In the paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, Harvard researchers describe what a transmission device that emits FRBs may look like. Since 2007, fewer than two dozen FRB’s have been detected by large radio telescopes like the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico.
Theorist Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics is working on the Breakthrough Starshot project, which would send a lightweight spacecraft powered by light. This inspired him to study whether an alien civilization may use similar technologies that transmit FRBs by launching a light sail at the speed of light.
“We are trying to push a very lightweight spacecraft that weighs a gram or so,” Loeb tells Inverse. “A much more advanced civilization might very well develop a technology that can launch much heavier payloads. It’s the same principle. You attach the payload to the sail and you push the sail with light.”
The FRB parameters were consistent with this idea, lending credence to the possibility that FRBs may be artificial in origin.
“Naturally, we were very surprised and excited to discover that an artificial origin for FRBs was compatible with the known data,” coauthor Manasvi Lingam of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics tells Inverse.
Researchers speculate that FRBs might be leakage from planet-sized transmitters that power interstellar probes. This beamer must be of a size comparable to Earth, and the required power is the amount of sunlight a planet twice the size of Earth receives. This can generate enough power to push 20 large cruise ships.
From an engineering perspective, it’s possible for this device to withstand the heat with a water-cooled device twice the size of Earth. The speculated transmission device would need to focus a beam on a light sail continuously to power it.
“We found that the amount of power that you need is similar to the amount of sunlight intercepted by Earth,” Loeb says. “If you can imagine harvesting the starlight and using it for the purpose of propelling a light sail, it could work.”
Scientists suspect FRBs are artificial partly because of their brightness. The signals exhibit a brightness temperature of 10^37 degrees. To achieve such a high brightness at room temperature, electrons must move coherently, which is what happens in a radio antenna when an alternating electric field is applied to a wire.
No known object in space generates radio bursts at such high brightness. In addition, FRBs repeat in an irregular fashion and are concentrated around a particular radio frequency that’s different from natural sources in space. For example, pulsars operate based on coherent emission, but their emission is much weaker than FRBs.
“It cannot be associated with a cataclysmic event like the collapse of a star,” Loeb says. “Therefore it’s worth entertaining the possibility that it’s artificial.”
This research may lead to a more in-depth SETI-based study of the sources of FRBs through the Breakthrough Listen project. Right now there’s no good explanation for the origin of FRBs, but scientists can continue finding more clues. Previously, Loeb proposed a way for citizen scientists to detect FRBs using cell phones, which can give scientists clues for where they come from.
“We plan to look at other ways by which the signatures of advanced civilizations may be detectable by humans,” Lingam says. “Most of them are connected to how civilizations can tap energy sources for undertaking large-scale engineering projects.”
Although this hypothesis for the origin of FRBs is speculative, Loeb says he would have no problem accepting an alternative explanation if evidence shows otherwise.
“The exciting aspect of doing science is that one rules out possibilities with better data,” Loeb says. “The history of science shows that it would be unwise to rule out possibilities just based on prejudice. This often leads to stagnation rather than progress.”
Abstract: We examine the possibility that Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) originate from the activity of extragalactic civilizations. Our analysis shows that beams used for powering large light sails could yield parameters that are consistent with FRBs. The characteristic diameter of the beam emitter is estimated through a combination of energetic and engineering constraints, and both approaches intriguingly yield a similar result which is on the scale of a large rocky planet. Moreover, the optimal frequency for powering the light sail is shown to be similar to the detected FRB frequencies. These `coincidences’ lend some credence to the possibility that FRBs might be artificial in origin. Other relevant quantities, such as the characteristic mass of the light sail, and the angular velocity of the beam, are also derived. By using the FRB occurrence rate, we infer upper bounds on the rate of FRBs from extragalactic civilizations in a typical galaxy. The possibility of detecting fainter signals is briefly discussed, and the wait time for an exceptionally bright FRB event in the Milky Way is estimated.

UFOs were reported flying near the McGuire Air Force Base and nearby Fort Dix Base in Trenton, New Jersey, before state Police requested entry to investigate.
But the events which allegedly then unfolded go way beyond the traditional UFO sighting.
It is claimed a military police officer based at Fort Dix reported seeing "a low-flying object pass over his car" as he drove.
After braking, he claimed to see in front of his car "a small being with a large head, black eyes, and a very slender body".
He claims he panicked, got out of the car and pulled out a .45 automatic gun, before demanding the being lay on the floor.
But, after his request was ignored, he fired a number of shots.
The wounded creature is alleged to have jumped a fence into the McGuire base before heading down a runway.
But, according to the case, it then collapsed dead.
Sgt Jeff Morse is listed as a witness who allowed police access to the scene.
But it is alleged that this was a pseudonym he was given to avoid his true identity getting out.
According to omni.media, police found: "The body, crouched in a fetal position, not breathing.
"It was indeed dead. Shocked, but keeping with protocol, they began to rope off the area.

The case of the alleged alien shooting has never been fully explained or debunked.
While on patrol, Morse watched the Blue Beret specialists spray the corpse from a portable tank and cover it with a white sheet.

He said he was told that after this, a C-141 cargo aircraft landed on site, the being was loaded on board, and it has been suspected that it took off towards Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
Conspiracy theorists claim this is the same base where alien bodies from the alleged 1947 Roswell UFO crash were secretly taken.
The claim is that Mr Morse and the police officer were separated and warned never to speak of the incident again or risk losing their jobs.
According to UFO researchers Mr Morse and other witnesses had to later go to Wright Patterson where they were interrogated.
Mr Morse said years later: “They told me about my duty to keep my mouth shut... I signed a form and it is supposed to bind me for life.”
He is said to have claimed he has been "reminded" never to speak of the event.
UFO site omni.media has revisited the case.
In an article it asked: "So did a panicked, trigger-happy MP actually shoot and kill an alien that night?
"The truth may never be known. The lid on this and so many other apparent incidents of this ilk have been so tightly wound shut, that those involved fear the worst for their jobs, and perhaps even their lives.
"But if this case of an alien termination is true, then we have more to fear than just military threats.
"We have an alien race expecting one of their own to eventually come home. They just probably weren't expecting it to be in a body bag."
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual has his doubts about the case.
He told Express.co.uk: "There are numerous stories of alien spaceship and alien entity retrievals, like this one it is hard to pin down the facts.
"In this instance, Jeff Morse is the prime source of this story and there is not much evidence to back-up his claims except a few rumours.
"When Roger Pibson, a special investigator for the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS), looked into the case in 2002 he contacted numerous McGuire AFB officials who denied any event of this nature occurring at the base.
"Believers would say 'they would say that' as part of the cover-up. More damning is the original report by Morse, which is claimed to contain many errors suggesting it was a hoax, nonetheless Morse stuck to his story and seemed convincing to those who met him.
"We might also wonder why the base did not go into full alert, in fear that the ETs would mount an attack in response to the shooting of their comrade.
"Instead, the story just sounds like a fantasy that piggy backed on the renewed interest in the 1947 Roswell case."

The search for extraterrestrial intelligence has looked for many different signs of alien life, from radio broadcasts to laser flashes, without success. However, newly published research suggests that mysterious phenomena called fast radio bursts could be evidence of advanced alien technology. Specifically, these bursts might be leakage from planet-sized transmitters powering interstellar probes in distant galaxies.
"Fast radio bursts are exceedingly bright given their short duration and origin at great distances, and we haven't identified a possible natural source with any confidence," said theorist Avi Loeb of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "An artificial origin is worth contemplating and checking."
As the name implies, fast radio bursts are millisecond-long flashes of radio emission. First discovered in 2007, fewer than two dozen have been detected by gigantic radio telescopes like the Parkes Observatory in Australia or the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. They are inferred to originate from distant galaxies, billions of light-years away.
Loeb and his co-author Manasvi Lingam (Harvard University) examined the feasibility of creating a radio transmitter strong enough for it to be detectable across such immense distances. They found that, if the transmitter were solar powered, the sunlight falling on an area of a planet twice the size of the Earth would be enough to generate the needed energy. Such a vast construction project is well beyond our technology, but within the realm of possibility according to the laws of physics.
Lingam and Loeb also considered whether such a transmitter would be viable from an engineering perspective, or whether the tremendous energies involved would melt any underlying structure. Again, they found that a water-cooled device twice the size of Earth could withstand the heat.
They then asked, why build such an instrument in the first place? They argue that the most plausible use of such power is driving interstellar light sails. The amount of power involved would be sufficient to push a payload of a million tons, or about 20 times the largest cruise ships on Earth.
"That's big enough to carry living passengers across interstellar or even intergalactic distances," added Lingam.
To power a light sail, the transmitter would need to focus a beam on it continuously. Observers on Earth would see a brief flash because the sail and its host planet, star and galaxy are all moving relative to us. As a result, the beam sweeps across the sky and only points in our direction for a moment. Repeated appearances of the beam, which were observed but cannot be explained by cataclysmic astrophysical events, might provide important clues about its artificial origin.
Loeb admits that this work is speculative. When asked whether he really believes that any fast radio bursts are due to aliens, he replied, "Science isn't a matter of belief, it's a matter of evidence. Deciding what’s likely ahead of time limits the possibilities. It's worth putting ideas out there and letting the data be the judge.”
The paper reporting this work has been accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters and is available online.

Snelle radioflitsen stellen astronomen al lange tijd voor een raadsel. Afgelopen jaar werden 16 van deze flitsen waargenomen, maar niemand weet waar ze precies vandaan komen.
Een wetenschapper van het Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics denkt dat de radioflitsen worden voortgebracht door een buitenaardse intelligentie.
Theoretisch natuurkundige Avi Loeb bestudeerde de radioflitsen en kwam tot de conclusie dat ze mogelijk motoren van buitenaardse ruimteschepen aandrijven.
Geen overtuigende verklaring
“We hebben nog geen overtuigende natuurlijke verklaring voor dit fenomeen,” aldus Loeb. “Het is de moeite waard te onderzoeken of ze een kunstmatige oorsprong hebben.”
De radiosignalen worden mogelijk door aliens gebruikt voor zonnezeilen, ruimtevaartuigen die worden aangedreven door zonne-energie.
“De uitbarstingen die we tot nu toe hebben waargenomen, zouden van een dergelijk systeem afkomstig kunnen zijn,” stelt Loeb in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Hele planeet
Zo’n systeem zou net zo groot als een hele planeet moeten zijn, schatten Loeb en zijn collega Manasvi Lingam van de Harvard-universiteit.
Het systeem kan volgens hen een massa van een miljoen ton voortstuwen, ongeveer 20 keer de grootste cruiseschepen op aarde.
“Dat is genoeg om levende passagiers te verplaatsen over interstellaire of zelfs intergalactische afstanden,” voegde Lingam toe.
Verre sterrenstelsels
Snelle radioflitsen bestaan uit radiostraling en duren slechts enkele milliseconden. Ze werden in 2007 voor het eerst ontdekt.
Ze lijken uit verre sterrenstelsels te komen die zich op miljarden lichtjaren afstand bevinden.
Wetenschappers zeggen dat deze kristallen op een dag kunnen worden gebruikt voor veilige kwantumcomputers.
Tijd
Hoewel atomen in kristallen zoals een ijskristal of diamant in een steeds terugkerend patroon in de ruimte geordend zijn, herhaalt het patroon achter tijdkristallen zich in de tijd.
Het gedrag van de kristallen druist in tegen de verwachtingen, aldus onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Maryland en de Universiteit van Californië – Berkeley.

De vreemde tijdkristallen bestaan uit atomen die voortdurend in beweging zijn zonder daarbij energie te verliezen.
Natuurkundige Frank Wilczek speculeerde in 2012 als eerste over het bestaan van tijdkristallen. Hij dacht dat het mogelijk moest zijn om een kristalstructuur te creëren in de tijddimensie.

9. Emanuel Swedenborg
The Swedish philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg believed the universe was filled with other planets inhabited by humans (though spiritual beings). He claimed to have been guided by God and an angel through spiritual tours of Heaven, Hell, and the cosmos. Martians resembled humans of various hues without facial hair, lived in perfect communes (wrong thinkers being exiled), wore clothes made from tree bark, and were apparently the best people in the universe. The inhabitants of Jupiter were upright, soft-spoken, happy, and family-oriented people with an obsession with washing their faces and a tendency to walk on their hands. Finally, Saturnians were restrained, humble people with low self-esteem. They had little interest in food and clothing. Rather than burying their dead, they would cover them with leaves. Swedenborg never got around to visiting the other planets of the solar system through the angels, perhaps because they hadn’t been discovered yet by other Earthlings.
8. Howard Menger
UFO contactee and alleged reincarnated Saturnian Howard Menger claimed to have been taken on joyrides through the solar system on a flying saucer. His interaction with aliens began at the age of 10 when a mysterious woman in the forest told him he was chosen and destined for great things. He had intermittent contact during his service in the Pacific War, but after leaving the army he spent a lot of time helping visitors from Venus and Mars blend in with Earth clothing—the women apparently had trouble with high heels and rejected bras entirely. Later he would remember he was actually the reincarnated spirit of a Saturnian man named Sol du Naro, who occupied the body of a dead one-year-old named Howard Menger at the end of a wonderful relationship with a Venusian woman. He claims the beings and civilizations on Venus and Saturn vibrate at a higher frequency than those on Earth, rendering their bodies more tenuous and often invisible to us.
He described beautiful suburbs with redwood trees on Venus, unfamiliar animals, and people walking around in pastel clothing. He would also take a trip to the Moon after receiving a lunar potato containing over 15 percent protein from a contact in Philadelphia. The lunar trip would require a week and a half of atomic processing in order to exist on the Moon’s “expression of reality.” On arrival, Menger reported beautiful pearl-shaped aerodromes, women in gowns offering refreshments, floating trains, and a number of Russian, German, and Japanese tour groups. He even reported a huge, crashed, bullet-shaped vehicle, said to be the remains of an exploratory vessel from another world.
Back on Earth, later in life he recanted his story, blaming it all on aCIA mind experiment, only to re-recant back to his original story in the 1980s.
In 2014, an alleged whistleblower named Captain Kaye claimed he had spent 17 of his 20 years in the military on Mars, protecting five civilian colonies. He claims he was recruited into the Mars Defense Force (MDF) from a covert branch of the US Marine Corps called “Special Section,” although the MDF apparently recruits from a number of different military branches.
The main human colony on Mars is Aries Prime, built in the middle of a crater. Captain Kaye reports Mars has a breathable atmosphere and occasionally balmy climate. His mission was to defend the human colonies from the two indigenous races, a reptilian race and an insectoid race, aggressive in defense but not expansionist, usually content to leave the MDF and Mars Colony Corporation alone. Things took a turn toward the end of his service as all human military personnel were ordered to retrieve a sacred reptilian artifact from a cave. The ensuing battle killed almost 1,000 personnel and left only 27 survivors.
Captain Kaye said he hopes his testimony will bring to light thebreakaway human civilization on Mars, and he has been backed up by Michael Relfe, who also claims his 20 years of service included covert operations on the red planet. Laura Magdalene Eisenhower, who claims to be the great granddaughter of the President, also claimed attempts were made to recruit her for the Mars colony.
In 2015, Captain Kaye’s real name was revealed to be Randy Cramer, who gave further details such as the Moon landing being a cover for extensive operations on the Moon in the 1950s and Mars in the 1960s, and the US Marines “Special Section” being set up by President Eisenhower as a counterweight to Majestic-12.
In 1906, Utah’s Emery County Progress published an article about a recent trip to Mars by Sackville G. Leyson, president of Society for Psychical Research, via psychic projection. He described Mars as a big globe of molten fire surrounded by bloodred clouds mixed with others of greenish hue. He described two tribes of native Martians, both naked, covered in fur. The difference between them was that “one [was] so large I only came up to their knees and the other [was] so small that they only came up to my knees.” The larger species was described as possessing huge ears, a lion’s nose, a large eye in the middle of the forehead, and lungs that expanded crosswise rather than up and down. They lived in rock houses.
The smaller species was described as web-footed creatures able to slide across moss and scale walls, with eyes in their temples and two holes in their cheeks to make up for their lack of a nose. They lived in holes under the ground. He also reported rubber trees, a substance resembling snow that wasn’t cold and was soft to walk on, and “men working with some sort of machine which was guiding lights across transparent rocks. The rays seemed to be reflected clear to the atmosphere on earth.” Given the fact there isn’t much evidence Sackville G. Leyson actually existed, it’s most likely the entire account was fabricated by the Emery County Progress as a satire of astral projection and contemporary theories of life on other planets.
5. Ingo Swann And Harold Sherman
Remote viewers Ingo Swann and Harold Sherman allegedly undertook psychic journeys to Mercury and Jupiter, just ahead of the Pioneer 10 space probe. Mercury was allegedly filled with rainbows and had a thin atmosphere and a water-dwelling form of lichen-like lifeforms living on rocks. Jupiter was said to have a bitter cold atmosphere of swirling colors and tornados, as well as a 9,000-meter-high (30,000 ft) mountain range. Evaluations of the accuracy of the remote viewing were decidedly mixed. Carl Sagan was even more damning, sarcastically calling the pair “two courageous American mystics” and their results “dreadful—sort of vague remembrances of sixth-grade general science.”
4. Dana Howard
Contactee Dana Howard wrote a number of books describing her experiences on Venus, including My Flight to Venus (1954), Diane: She Came From Venus (1956),Over the Threshold (1957), andVesta, the Earthborn Venusian (1959). She allegedly made first contact with a 250-centimeter-tall (8′) Venusian woman named Diane in 1936.
“Her head was radiant with a crown of fire, strands of golden hair cascading gently over her beautiful, slightly olive-tinted shoulders. The strange mystic light flooding her dark, prophetic eyes, added a wistful something to all her other charms . . . ‘Have no fears, Child of Earth,’ she intoned. ‘Let the doors of your mind be opened and we of the faraway planets will speak to you in poetry and song.’ “
Howard then entered a space ship made of translucent materials with gold trimming and gem studs. Then the mysterious woman disappeared, and Dana Howard was swept off on a trip to Venus.
She would later encounter the Venusian Diane again when she materialized at a seance in Los Angeles in 1955, telling Howard she would help her write about her experiences on Venus then dancing a kind of undulating waltz. In her works, written with Diane as muse no doubt, Howard detailed Venusian medicine as the manipulation of life essence, which resembled a spider’s web in white with a slight blue tint. She also wrote of their technology, teleportation achieved through vibration of matter through thought. Later, she would describe having married and raised children on the Second Planet.
3. George Adamski
In 1952, Polish immigrant George Adamski and some friends went into the Mojave Desert to look for UFOs. There they saw a gigantic, cigar-shaped craft and chased after it. The cigar craft rocketed into space, and Adamski was left alone when another, smaller craft appeared and a man appeared about 40 meters (130 ft) away, beckoning Adamski. He was a beautiful 160-centimeter-tall (5’3”) man with long, blonde hair and tanned skin, wearing a brown one-piece suit with a broad belt and red shoes. After shaking hands with Adamski, he opened telepathic contact and said his name was Orthon, he was from Venus, and he came to warn the Earth about the dangers of nuclear energy.
This was only Adamski’s first encounter. He would later claim to visit the Moon (where he reported “billions and billions of fireflies . . . flickering everywhere,” as well as cities, forests and snow-capped mountains) and Mars and Venus, where he enjoyed banquets with local inhabitants. He went there aboard bell-shaped flying saucers piloted by Nordic space brothers and took a number of photographs of the craft. His claims made him famous as the first well-known contactee, but some say his successful books about journeys through the solar system were merely a re-hash ofPioneers of Space, a science fiction book Adamski wrote through a ghost writer, and that much of his other evidence was faked.
2. Orfeo Angelucci
Believing mold to be a negative form of life leeching off living matter through a subtle process of mutation, Lockheed Corporation aviation employee Orfeo Angelucci decided to attempt an experiment in 1952, sending 18 samples ofAspergillus clavatusmold into the upper atmosphere to test structural changes in their growth. As fate would have it, the balloons broke away prematurely and the mold samples were lost, but by happy coincidence his mishap was noticed by a passing Neptunian spacecraft. His father-in-law first noticed the circular craft, which followed the balloons as they floated away.
Angelucci had a second encounter six weeks later when an oval object glowing red appeared in front of his car as he returned from work. It issued two balls of green fire which told him they were friends and to get out of his car. When he did, a man and woman of “ultimate perfection” appeared and told him he was of very special interest to the aliens surveying Earth. He would later encounter a dashing flying saucer pilot named Neptune who told him secrets of the universe and warned him of the dangers of Communism, and another handsome humanoid named Adam, who over steak dinner turned Angelucci’s glass of water into delicious space nectar by means of an effervescent white pellet.
After being brought to an alien world via flying saucer, Angelucci remembered having lived there before in a previous life on the world and that his original name was also Neptune. The world was apparently a remnant of the shattered planet Lucifer, once the most radiant planets in the universe, which had turned against the etheric beings of the “Father” or “Source.” He would also meet Jesus Christ, whom he revealed to be an infinite entity from the Sun, and witnessed the end of the world, which would happen in 1986 if humanity didn’t mend its ways. Good thing we got on that.
1. Rael
In 1973, French racing car journalist Claude Vorilhon reported a dramatic encounter with a humanoid alien named Yahweh at the Puy de Lassolas volcano park, who told him the secrets of the Elohim, the alien creators of the human race. Yahweh told him he was his real father, and bestowed him with the name Rael. In 1975, Rael claimed to have been taken to the planet of the Elohim (and the nearby planet of the Eternals, where humans live for 700 years before being cloned from a single cell taken prior to death) via flying saucer, stopping along the way for a massage and aromatherapy treatment at the outskirts of our solar system. Suitably refreshed, he arrived on the planet and met his half-brothers Jesus, Muhammad, and Buddha. While there, he was tempted by an Eloah named Satan, who told him Yahweh’s plan for enlightening the human race was doomed to failure and made a counter-offer of billions of dollars in a Swiss bank account if Rael would help carry out a plan of final cataclysm through worldwide racial war.
Rael demurred, saying that saving humanity was more important than riches and power, which was smart because it turned out the whole thing was a test by Yahweh to see if Rael was truly worthy. Rael was then shown the facilities making immortal biological robots, where they made a copy of Rael’s mother and a host of attractive young females before returning to Rael’s apartment for a party. Before returning him to Earth, Yahweh used a helmet-like machine to maximize Rael’s intellectual faculties—which probably had nothing to do with the fact he brought a clone robot of his mother to a sex party.
+ Truman Bethurum
Truman Bethurum almost doesn’t fit this list because he never did get to visit another planet, but he really could’ve been a contender. In 1952, the night shift maintenance mechanic finished work at 3:30 AM and drove out to a hillside called Mormon Mesa to look for seashells from the ancient sea that once covered the area. After a search, he fell asleep in his truck only to be awoken by “a mumbling, low talking in an unintelligible tongue.” His truck was surrounded by 8 to 10 short men, all olive-skinned, clean-shaven with black hair, appearing to be of Latin extraction. They were wearing leather jackets and what appeared to be Greyhound bus drivers’ uniforms.
Bethurum got out of his truck to greet them and immediately noticed the flying saucer hovering nearby. After shaking hands with the saucer crew and realizing they spoke English, Bethurum was taken aboard and introduced to their captain, the bewitching Aura Rhanes, who had a complexion of “a beautiful olive and roses,” wore a black beret over her short hair, and spoke to Bethurum in rhyming couplets. When he returned to his hotel, Bethurum wrote a note: “If I am found dead in my bed, it will be because my heart has stopped from the terrible excitement induced by seeing and going aboard a flying saucer!”
As it happened, Bethurum would be taken aboard the flying saucer another 11 times. He discovered that the visiters hailed from the planet Clarion, hidden on the far side of the Moon, and their saucer was made from the finest Martian steel. On their planet, there was no disease, divorce, war, or social unrest, and everyone lived to the age of 1,000. There was also no liquor or tobacco. He was told that mankind would never get into space until they ended strife and war.
Back on Earth, Bethurum would become popular on the UFO enthusiast circuit with speaking engagements and television interviews like NBC’s Betty White Show, eventually forming a religious group known as the Sanctuary of Thought. His wife divorced him out of jealousy of Aura Rhanes, although Bethurum was never able to take it further with her, nor did he ever get to planet Clarion. His last signals to the flying saucer went unanswered, and the last time he saw Aura Rhanes was in a restaurant in Los Angeles, were she was drinking a glass of orange juice and ignoring him. He never saw his space friends again. Maybe the fame had gone to his head, and they abandoned him. We may never know.

UFO sightings increasing in Queensland, Australia, say researchers (Photos)
UFO researchers say UFO sightings are increasing in the state of Queensland in Australia. Recent sightings have included photos and video.
UFO Research Queensland President Sheryl Gottschall told the Brisbane Times there has been a spike in reports over the last few months. She says, “We get about 100 calls a year and across Australia all up the UFO research groups get up to 800. That’s just the reported sightings – a lot go unreported.”
Another representative from the Queensland UFO group agrees. In a radio interview with 4BC, Tino Pezzimenti says, “Only about 5% of reports or sightings actually get reported, so you can imagine. We get a couple hundred a year. That’s only probably 5% of people that actually find their way to reporting something to us.”

Pezzimenti says many of these are not just reports of lights in the sky. Some of the sightings come with photos or video.
The hosts of 4BC said they had heard many sightings are due to a large local event called the Royal Queensland Show, aka Ekka (referred to as “the exhibition” in the radio show). The event is Queensland’s largest annual event, attracting hundreds of thousands of guest from around the world. It includes farm animal, food, and strength competitions, among other events, and takes place in early August.
Pezzimenti admitted that many UFO reports are misidentifications. He cited a recent sighting in mid-July in which the police suggested the mysterious lights were actually due to the testing of the fairground lights in preparation for Ekka.
However, Pezzimenti says their organization is not quick to call everything a UFO. He explains, “To be a UFO it’s got to have to do something unusual or look unusual like this photograph, or it does a 90 degree turn, or it flies off faster than any jet we have ever heard and there’s not even a sonic boom.”
The photograph Pezzimenti refers to is a sighting he is particularly excited about. The photo was allegedly taken on Friday, May 23, 2014 in the Wooloowin area at 5:35 pm. It shows what appears to be a strange disk-shaped object in the sky.
Pezzimenti says the object does not appear to have engines or propellers. He says this kind of photographic evidence needs to be taken “pretty seriously.”
The image was posted on a Facebook page called Brisbane UFO Sightings, which was created recently for the founder of the page to post pictures of UFOs. Apparently, he or she captures them often. Other than the date, time, and location of the sighting, no other information is provided.

The increase in sightings has lead to a local resident to begin holding skywatches. Kristy Buist, founder of the Paranormal Awareness Community, had her first skywatch scheduled for earlier this week.
Buist told the Brisbane Times she has had four sightings of her own. She described the first as, “platinum and sort of shaped like diamonds just casually floating across the sky”.
Now she says, “I do look for UFOs often. I look for them wherever I go.”
Brisbane Times says participants at the skywatch look for “‘unusual movement’ in the night sky, including ‘classic’ UFO moves such as bright lights travelling from one horizon to another in seconds or lights making sudden turns.”
Photos from the skywatch were posted on UFO Research Queensland’s Facebook page, but none of them include UFOs. However, as their Facebook page says, “Skywatching calls for a lot of patience and persistence.”
Both of which I am sure local researchers will continue to practice as they continue their quest for UFO evidence, which, incidentally, remains elusive despite the increased reports.

Feeding knowledge directly into your brain, just like in sci-fi classic The Matrix, could soon take as much effort as falling asleep, scientists believe.
Researchers claim to have developed a simulator which can feed information directly into a person’s brain and teach them new skills in a shorter amount of time, comparing it to “life imitating art”.
They believe it could be the first steps in developing advanced software that will make Matrix-style instant learning a reality.
In the neo-noir sci-fi classic, protagonist Neo is able to learn kung fu in seconds after the martial art is ‘uploaded’ straight to his brain.
Researchers from HRL Laboratories, based in California, say they have found a way to amplify learning, only on a much smaller scale than seen in the Hollywood film.
They studied the electric signals in the brain of a trained pilot and then fed the data into novice subjects as they learned to pilot an aeroplane in a realistic flight simulator.
The study, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, found that subjects who received brain stimulation via electrode-embedded head caps improved their piloting abilities and learnt the task 33 per cent better than a placebo group.
“Our system is one of the first of its kind. It’s a brain stimulation system,” explained Dr Matthew Phillips.
“It sounds kind of sci-fi, but there’s large scientific basis for the development of our system.
“The specific task we were looking at was piloting an aircraft, which requires a synergy of both cognitive and motor performance.
“When you learn something, your brain physically changes. Connections are made and strengthened in a process called neuro-plasticity.
“It turns out that certain functions of the brain, like speech and memory, are located in very specific regions of the brain, about the size of your pinky.”
Dr Matthews believes that brain stimulation could eventually be implemented for tasks like learning to drive, exam preparation and language learning
“What our system does is it actually targets those changes to specific regions of the brain as you learn,” he added.
“The method itself is actually quite old. In fact, the ancient Egyptians 4000 years ago used electric fish to stimulate and reduce pain.
The Matrix-style learning could become a reality
“Even Ben Franklin applied currents to his head, but the rigorous, scientific investigation of these methods started in the early 2000s and we’re building on that research to target and personalise a stimulation in the most effective way possible.
“Your brain is going to be very different to my brain when we perform a task. What we found is … brain stimulation seems to be particularly effective at actually improving learning.”

Both chambers of Congress just passed the NASA Authorization Act of 2017. With this transformative development, the space agency got a lot more than just $19.508 billion in funding. They also got a very clear mandate: Get humanity to Mars.
To be clear, Mars has been in the works for some time; however, the 2017 Act places a strong emphasis on this goal, making it the focal point of NASA’s long-term plans. In the document, congress asserts that the space agency is to get humans “near or on the surface of Mars in the 2030s.” Opposition to the bill from the administration isn’t expected, so it’s more than likely to be passed into law by the presidency.

In order to get to Mars by the 2030s, Congress is asking NASA to develop “an initial human exploration roadmap” that must be submitted before December 1, 2017.
The bill outlines the necessity of this roadmap, stating: “It is the sense of Congress that expanding human presence beyond low-Earth orbit and advancing toward human missions to Mars in the 2030s requires early strategic planning and timely decisions to be made in the near-term on the necessary courses of action for commitments to achieve short-term and long-term goals and objectives.”
To that end, the 2017 Act states that this plan should outline clear goals that are a bit closer to home, instead of just making a grand leap to the Red Planet all at once. The document states, “A human exploration roadmap should begin with low-Earth orbit, then address in greater detail progress beyond low-Earth orbit to cis-lunar space, and then address future missions aimed at human arrival and activities near and then on the surface of Mars.”
Speaking of the planned stages, NASA already has a basic outline: “The human exploration of Mars crosses three thresholds, each with increasing challenges as humans move farther from Earth: Earth Reliant [now until the mid-2020s], the Proving Ground [2018-2030], and Earth Independent [now to 2030s and beyond].”
With these planned phases, NASA should be able to easily provide Congress with the roadmap that it’s asking for.
Through this new NASA Authorization Act, Congress affirms that “Mars is the appropriate long-term goal for the human space flight program,” and it is likely that the Moon will be a stop over in 2020, if the current administration’s plans push forward.
NASA’s Mars Missions
Recently, much of the news covering missions to Mars involved private space companies, most notably, SpaceX and foreign space agencies — including China and the UAE.
According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, the company will create a permanent Martian settlement. To that end, Musk’s plan includes the launch of the unmanned “Red Dragon” spacecraft by 2018, then sending a new and reusable rocket by 2022 (which will be powered by the just recently tested Raptor rocket), and eventually launching humans to Mars after that—hopefully landing by 2025. However, much of the details still need to be fleshed out.
Regardless, Musk has made it clear that he thinks such a colonization project will ultimately save the human race. And as this directive by congress reveals, the U.S. government agrees.

To say, however, that NASA has been sitting idly by would be inaccurate. The space agency has been “on a journey to Mars” for some time.
So, what has NASA been up to in relation to the Red Planet? The agency already has a host of rovers currently on Mars. One
, the Curiosity rover, has made much headway in helping us better understand how much water did (and maybe still does) exist on Mars. Another rover is planned for 2020. This Mars 2020 rover will gather and study data on the availability of resources, such as oxygen, on Mars.
In this respect, Sending rovers is one of the first steps in getting people to Mars.
Ultimately, in the end, getting humans to Mars isn’t some empty obsession. It’s a worthwhile endeavor—one that has the potential to inspire generations in the same manner that the Apollo missions (and Moon landing) did. For many, getting to Mars would be the highest point of human exploration they would ever witness. Think of what New Horizon’s arrival at Pluto felt like, and now multiply that by about 100.
Already, Mars rover missions are accelerating innovation and research exponentially, so think of all the things that we could learn once we’re actually there. It is a bold new era in the final frontier.

DNA: THE BLUEPRINT OF COMPUTERS?
Computers have without a doubt revolutionized modern society. They’re everywhere: our offices and homes, our pockets — even in our kitchen appliances. As for the next place computer technology could be headed, you already have the basic component: your DNA. It sounds strange, but researchers at the University of Manchester are working on turning strands of DNA into the next basis for computing.
Scientists have actually created a DNA-based computing device that “grows as it computes.” While our current computers have a finite capacity for computations, DNA computers could be designed to self-replicate, making them able to create more storage as-needed. Computers today have gradually worked up to being able to hold a few terabytes — but DNA computing can work at 100 billion terabytes. To top it off, all of that storage is guaranteed with just one gram of DNA. While that’s impressive enough on its own, storage isn’t the only benefit a DNA computer can provide.
With a self-replicating computer, there’s also the advantage of instantaneous computing power. In an interview with Popular Mechanics, lead researcher Professor Ross D King illustrated a maze with two paths — one leading left and the other leading right. He explained that current “Electronic computers need to choose which path to follow first.” On the other hand, a DNA computer “doesn’t need to choose, for it can replicate itself and follow both paths at the same time, thus finding the answer faster.”
WHAT’S THE CATCH?
While there are pioneering companies and individuals working on perfecting the system, at the moment coding just 1 megabyte of information into DNA costs $12,500. Most information we own contains thousands of megabytes, making encoding information a particularly expensive endeavor to undertake.
Footage uploaded to conspiracy YouTube channel SecureTeam 10 shows a plane travelling through the sky before completely vanishing in an instant.
The footage was captured in Birmingham, Alabama, by a man who, according to the narrator of the video, was out walking his dog with his fiancé when he began filming a passing train and then turned to what he thought was a commercial airliner.
The narrator says: “Then this airliner does something what no airliner has been seen to do, which is completely vanish in mid air.
“I have spoken to the three sources, in depth, from Birmingham, who after capturing this footage did not run out to put it online or give it to their local news source because these weren’t those type of people – they had no incentive to do so.”
The footage is apparently not an isolated incident, according to the operator of the channel, who says that he is constantly inundated with sightings of ‘alien planes’ which have the ability to disappear or morph into a new form.
It says: “This is not the first time that we have seen these fake planes, or another term alien planes.

Giant space-station refueling depots could be orbiting the moon by 2020, but only if the Trump administration makes the funding and national drive needed for it to happen a priority, according to aerospace entrepreneur Robert Bigelow.
Bigelow, whose company, Bigelow Aerospace, has launched three private space-habitat prototypes into orbit — including the first inflatable space-station module, said that a commercial station in lunar orbit would be a vital destination for moon exploration.
"The key is going to be how fast the Trump administration can react," Bigelow said in an interview Friday (March 3). The administration would have to move quickly "to energize funds and to galvanize the private sector" to make a lunar depot by end of 2020 possible, he added. Bigelow spoke with Space.com just days after the private spaceflight company SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, announced that it will launch a private flight around the moon in 2018. On Feb. 26, Musk told reporters SpaceX had "significant deposits" from two as-yet unnamed individuals for a private trip around the moon aboard the company's Dragon crew capsule. The flight will launch on SpaceX's new Falcon Heavy rocket, which is scheduled to make its first test flight later this year.
"SpaceX has indicated that they can provide transportation for a circumlunar flight by 2018," Bigelow said. "If the timeline is met, SpaceX would be in a position to offer commercial transportation to the moon by 2020."
Last week, another space entrepreneur — Amazon's billionaire founder Jeff Bezos — told the Washington Post that his private space company Blue Origin is eyeing its own plan for moon-bound spacecraft and a lunar lander.

Bigelow himself has often said that private space stations and habitats for the moon and beyond have been goals for his Las Vegas-based Bigelow Aerospace. Last Wednesday (March 1), Bigelow unveiled his company's concept images of a lunar depot on the way to the moon, and in lunar orbit.
Bigelow Aerospace launched two uncrewed prototype inflatable habitats, called Genesis I and Genesis II, in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Then in 2016, the company's Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (or BEAM) was delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) on a SpaceX Dragon cargo ship as part of a NASA test for future space habitats. It is the first privately built and inflatable room ever installed on the space station. And so far, it's performed well, Bigelow said. [The Bigelow Expandable Activity Module in Pictures]
"We are pleased, so far, with the performance of the spacecraft," he added.
Bigelow Aerospace has also teamed up with the United Launch Alliance, a launch-providing partnership of Boeing and Lockheed Martin, to launch a colossal inflatable space habitat into orbit in 2020. That spacecraft, called the BA-330 for its 330 cubic meters (or about 11,650 cubic feet) of internal volume, would launch on a ULA Atlas V rocket and expand in orbit to serve as a free-flying private space station.
"The BA-330 is three times the size of anything on the ISS," Bigelow told Space.com, adding that the company aims to be able to provide the habitats at a fraction of NASA's cost.

Bigelow said that a BA-330 habitat could potentially be placed into a low-lunar orbit using two of ULA's upgraded Centaur rocket stages, known as ACES (Advanced Cryogenic Evolved Stage). The space station would orbit somewhere between 100 and 150 kilometers above the moon, serving as a gateway for astronaut crews making their way to or from the lunar surface.
The BA-330 could also be a fueling station for other spacecraft operating near the moon, something that will be essential for the permanent settlement of the moon, Bigelow said.
"You'll be able to give the astronauts a waystation, a place where they can have the experience of being farther from Earth than anyone has been in the last 45 years," he added.
A Georgia witness at Savannah recalled events from 2007 when a football-shaped object moving silently about 75 feet above a two-story building appeared to be about three to four feet in length, according to testimony in case 82024 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness first noticed a dark, round silhouette with small wings coming toward him over Savannah, GA.

The witness was outside on top of a two-story building watching a meteor shower on August 12, 2007.
“I was looking towards the north when I noticed a dark, round silhouette with small wings off in the distance against the glow of the city sky,” the witness stated.“Sometimes I would see owls flying at night, but this was obviously not an owl.”
The witness thought the object might be a bird.
“My first thought was that this has got to be the fastest bird with the shortest wings I have ever seen and the wings were not moving. I then realized that it was coming directly towards me. I instantly jumped up from my seat to give it my full attention.”

The witness guessed at the object’s altitude.
“The building I was standing on is two stories tall and I would guess that the object was about 75 feet above that. It was traveling from north to south in a straight line at approximately 35 to 45 mph. It was shaped like an American football with the tips cut off with two small, rectangular wings that were angled at about 45 degrees. I would guess that it was about three to four feet in length. The object had the appearance of molten lava.”

The witness noticed other characteristics of the object.
“It was not tremendously bright, but it was bright enough that I could see it perfectly. The center was glowing red and the rest was orange, yellow and black swirls with it being darker towards the edges. It looked like it had been cast from molten lava. It made no sound that I could hear and I didn’t see any type of propulsion like a propeller or an exhaust of any kind. It flew directly over me as I tracked it as it flew overhead and then out of my sight.”

A Star Is Headed in Our Direction and Could Threaten Life on Earth
It won't get too near, but it will come close enough to wreak unimaginable havoc on our planet.
Based on a recent study done, Gliese 710 — a K-spectral type star in the constellation Serpens Cauda — is bound for a close encounter with our solar system. Right now, it’s still about 64 light years away. At its current speed and path, it is estimated that it will be at its nearest distance to Earth in about 1.35 million years. That distance is roughly 1.2 trillion miles or 77 light-days (1 light-day is the distance light can travel in one day, or about 26 billion kilometers). When that time comes and at that distance, even at the size of only half our sun, Gliese 710 will appear as the “brightest and fastest object on the night sky formed outside the solar system”.
Although that’s still quite a long way off, the devastating threat it poses when the flyby finally happens cannot be dismissed because its impact will be felt for the next 10 million years.
The information that Gliese 710 will pass close to us is not entirely new. In fact, scientists have been aware of this for years, which is why they have been tracking its movement. However, it’s knowing that it will make a much closer approach than what was once thought — probably about five times closer — that’s new. And more importantly, it’s the direction it’s taking that’s causing serious alarm.
According to the data collected from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Gaia mission, Gliese 710 will not directly hit any object in our solar system, but it will likely travel through the Oort cloud, which is circling our solar system and is filled up with billions of comets and other icy objects. Because of its strong gravitational force, Gliese 710 — as it is passing through the Oort cloud — can influence the movement of the swarm of comets, change their course and hurtle towards our planet.
Not all those comets may make their way to us, though. Some may drift away further into space, get absorbed by the sun, pulled into other planets with stronger gravity, or maybe fall into a black hole? However, it’s impossible to think that none of those billions will hit us directly. And that’s what’s terrifying because we’re potentially looking at a comet shower that will last for 3 – 4 million years.
Remember that it took just one asteroid to wipe out the dinosaurs. Just imagine what a barrage of comets can do.

Detecting Life on Alien Planets Just Became Easier With This New Technique
The chemical-based analysis is not only simple. It's supposedly 10,000 times more sensitive than any existing method.
Searching for life outside Earth has become a never ending quest. And researchers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California might have come up with the easiest way yet.
Their method makes use of a process called capillary electrophoresis to separate liquid into its individual components. The process begins with mixing the liquid sample with a liquid reagent. Then, through a process known as induced fluorescence detection, different molecules moving at various speeds can be observed by shining a laser into the mixture. Finally, an electrical current is applied to the mixture, which then allows scientists to see the molecules separate from each other depending on how quickly they respond to the charge applied.
The test is meant to search for amino acids — what we acknowledge to be the building blocks from which all of life on Earth was derived from. It has been modified not just to enable detection of more amino acids in a single test, but also to detect amino acids regardless of how salty or alkaline the liquid sample is. This improvised method is specifically designed to detect alien life on an ocean world.
To find out if their method works, the research team analyzed amino acids in the waters of California’s Mono Lake. Specifically, they analyzed what is referred to as the ‘Signature 17 standard’ — the most common amino acids on Earth. Why did they choose this particular body of water? Because the lake has high alkaline content which makes it almost inhabitable, much like how alien waters probably are on surfaces like Mars; Europa — one of Jupiter’s moons; and Enceladus and Titan — Saturn’s moons.
To identify which amino acids were life-forming and which were not, the team studied the ‘chirality’ of the molecules. Chiral molecules — like what amino acids are — exist in two forms that are identical images of each other. These images are called right-handed and left-handed.
For amino acids that come from non-living sources, the distribution of right-handed and left-handed amino acids is nearly even. But for living sources, left-handed amino acids dominate over the right-handed ones. Taking off from this, scientists are inferring that alien life might also show a preference for either side. So finding such amino acids might be the clue that would point to the existence of alien life forms.
As reported by Phys.org, Peter Willis, the project’s principal investigator, was quoted as saying: “Using our method, we are able to tell the difference between amino acids that come from non-living sources like meteorites versus amino acids that come from living organisms.”
So when do we get to test this method outside our planet? Because it is supposedly ‘relatively simple and easy to automate’, there’s no reason to think that it can’t be deployed in a spacecraft soon. Especially since it’s the ideal complementary tool to help facilitate NASA’s upcoming missions that aim to find life on ocean worlds outside our planet.
The study was published in the journal Analytical Chemistry.
Five months to get there is just too long. It’s about time we cut the Red Planet's travel time short as putting boots on Mars should no longer be just a sci-fi dream but rather a reality.
Mars may be our nearest neighboring planet, but with the conventional rockets we have right now, it will still take us about five months to get there. And that simply isn’t satisfactory. There has got to be a way to make that trip shorter.
There are currently a few ongoing projects working towards this end. There’s the controversial propellant-less EM Drive which no one can explain for certain how it works, but has somehow passed its initial test.
And then there’s Charles Bombardier’s space train concept — the Solar Express that is envisioned to travel at approximately 1,864 miles per second, or 1% the speed of light, and cut travel time to Mars from a few months to just 2 days.
There’s also Positron Dynamics co-founder and CEO Ryan Weed’s antimatter-powered rocket that will make use of matter’s annihilation property — hit matter with its anti-matter counterpart to annihilate each other and generate pure energy that will be used to power the rocket and blast it into space with an accelerated speed that can enable travel to Mars in just a few weeks.
And now comes the latest bet: photonic propulsion — a concept that was explained by NASA scientist and University of California Physics Professor Philip Lubin in a recent video (posted below) released for NASA 360. It basically makes use of a beam of light for propulsion, hence the name photonic propulsion, for photons or visible light particles.
Lubin heads a team of scientists who has recently been given a $100,000 NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) grant to start planning and testing this photonic propulsion project that’s being called Directed Energy Propulsion for Interstellar Exploration or DEEP-IN.
To make the plan work, a laser array first needs to be placed in the Earth’s orbit. This orbiting laser array will then be used to push a solar sail. Much like a normal sail that catches wind to propel water vessels, a solar sail works the same way. Instead of wind, however, it catches light, and uses this to propel a space-bound probe — one that’s ideally ultralight (wafer-thin is how it’s being described), fuel-less, frictionless, and capable of travelling for a longer period of time at a speed that has so far been unattainable — 621 miles per second, or about 30% the speed of light.
While the concept sounds pretty much like another science fiction movie plot, Lubin says it’s not that far-fetched because we already have the technology. It just needs to be enhanced further. If successful, an umanned probe using photonic propulsion is expected to reach Mars in only 3 days, while a manned craft will take about a month — four months faster than any normal spacecraft can do at this time.
It’s a grand new idea, and it comes with a myriad of potential problems, of course. Primarily, there’s the challenge on how the probe would be able to decelerate when it reaches Mars. There’s also the certainty of encountering space debris and how to protect the craft from those. Then there’s ‘time dilation’, the concept that says that as one gets farther out in the universe, the slower time seems to pass. Plus there’s also the matter of how we can beam the information back to Earth.
All those problems aside, the idea that we have in our midst viable tech that can revolutionize space travel is quite an exciting one. Especially because it’s production is not expected to be at an exorbitant cost. By successfully making these solar sails, Mars will just be one among the many possible destinations. So, let’s all patiently wait and root for Lubin’s team to work their way towards the new age of space travel.
