China announces Mars probe mission.

Joining the United States, India and the EU, China is eyeing a successful Mars mission set to launch for Summer 2020.

The news came from the Chinese state media, reporting that the country’s Academy of Sciences will launch a probe to the Red Planet in July or August of 2020.

Wan Weixing of the Academy revealed that the government approved the Mars probe early last year following feasibility studies.

The probe consists of a rover, a lander and an orbiter. The pack will study the surface, atmosphere, environment and space around Mars. It will also search for water and ice while taking radar images of the planet 400 meters underground. Meanwhile, the orbiter will monitor the planet’s surface from above, and will serve as an additional eye for the ground explorer.

The Chinese probe’s goal is to send back data to Earth the following year. Like NASA’s Mars program, China is hoping to find any signs of ancient or existing extraterrestrial life, and look for signs of water and ice deposits.

The report said that the probe will run for about two Earth years before signing off.
