Harvard Scientists Say Aliens May Be Using Giant Radio Beams To Travel The Cosmos
Harvard Scientists Say Aliens May Be Using Giant Radio Beams To Travel The Cosmos
Thousands of civilizations could be flying on interstellar sails.
An artist's illustration of a light sail powered by a radio beam from the surface of a planet. The leakage from such beams as they sweep across the sky would appear as fast radio bursts.
Two Harvard University scientists are suggesting that mysterious fast radio bursts, detected in faraway galaxies, may be evidence of aliens traveling through the cosmos.
FRBs are extremely bright flashes of radio waves that last for only a thousandth of a second and are detected by earthbound telescopes. Since the first one was observed 10 years ago, 17 have actually been reported, although scientists think there are thousands of them a day.
At first, Abraham “Avi” Loeb said, he took a conservative approach to explaining them.
“It looked like the simplest explanation would be flares from stars in the Milky Way galaxy,” said Loeb, a theoretical astrophysicist and chair of Harvard’s astronomy department.
But then “one of the FRBs was localized to reside in a small galaxy at a distance of about a billion light-years away,” Loeb told The Huffington Post. (One light-year is about 6 trillion miles.)
Essentially, that means these FRBs are coming from the edge of the universe and must be brighter than anything else we know.
In a new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters this month, Loeb and Harvard physicist Manasvi Lingam say they decided to “examine the possibility that fast radio bursts originate from the activity of extragalactic civilizations.”
“Since there are many more galaxies out there than the Milky Way, it makes sense statistically that one would detect such phenomena outside the Milky Way more often rather than inside it,” Lingam told HuffPost.
While Loeb and Lingam don’t claim that FRBs definitely originate from aliens, they speculate that such phenomena could be the result of other civilizations using gigantic radio transmitters to hopscotch from one galaxy to another.
An almost planet-sized, solar-powered radio transmitter could generate enough energy to propel an interstellar light sail (like the one illustrated above), they suggest. These sails, in turn, might be sufficient to push “about 20 times the largest cruise ships on Earth.” FRBs would be the leakage from such transmitters.
“Our upper bound on the number of such civilizations is 10,000 in a typical galaxy,” Lingam said. “But I’d like to reiterate that this is the maximal value. In all probability, the real value is likely to be much lower.”
Nobody on Earth has detected any interstellar light sails yet. What large radio telescopes, like the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico or the Parkes Observatory in Australia, have picked up are very fast, bright flashes of energy.
For us to detect these bursts so many light-years away, Loeb said, they’d need a very bright source.
“So what we are considering in our scenario is a very narrow beam of radiation pushing on a sail, and that requires roughly the amount of energy intercepted by the Earth [from] sunlight. That’s the kind of power you need ― the energy falling on the Earth from the sun,” he said.
Loeb chairs the advisory committee for the Starshot project, which seeks to send a spaceship to Alpha Centauri, a star system over four light-years from Earth. The idea would be to aim powerful laser beams from Earth at thin sails carrying more than 1,000 probes. It’s not the same as the radio waves possibly used by aliens, but then humans are still taking baby steps into space.
“I can imagine [aliens] doing what we are just starting to do now,” Loeb said.
The Harvard scientist is well aware that talking about aliens, even hypothetically, can start some eye-rolling. But he doesn’t share that bias.
“We shouldn’t be guided by prejudice when we think about what may be out there,” said Loeb. “Many people tend to think they know the truth. They think that we are special, that maybe there is nothing out there.
“I think we should just observe and whenever we see something unusual, we should think, contemplate the possibility that it could be artificial. And there is nothing bad about that ― it’s a learning experience.”
Indeed, it’s probably the essence of being a theoretical astrophysicist.
“The whole principle of science is that you collect data that can falsify an idea that you have or prove it right,” Loeb said.
Lingam acknowledges that their hypothesis is still a tad speculative.
“We have suggested a potential means of distinguishing between ‘natural’ and ‘artificial’ origin of FRBs by taking a closer look at the signals, and looking for certain distinguishable patterns,” he said.
But don’t expect a quick answer on the aliens question. “With more data expected to emerge in the coming decades, I believe that our hypothesis will be testable,” Lingam said.

Closest Exoplanet To Earth -- August 2016
On Aug 24 2016, the European Southern Observatory announced the confirmation of the closest exoplanet to Earth. This illustration shows Proxima b, which orbits its parent star Proxima Centauri, the closest sun to Earth's sun. Proxima b lies within its sun's habitable zone, strongly suggesting the planet has liquid water on its surface.

NASA's Kepler Mission Discovers Planet
In this handout illustration made available on December 5, 2011 by NASA, the Kepler-22b, a planet known to comfortably circle in the habitable zone of a sun-like star is digitally illustrated. For the first time NASA's Kepler mission has confirmed a planet to orbit in a star's habitable zone; the region around a star, where liquid water, a requirement for life on Earth, could persist. The planet is 2.4 times the size of Earth, making it the smallest yet found to orbit in the middle of the habit. Clouds could exist in this earth's atmosphere, as the artist's interpretive illustration depicts. (Photo Illustration by Ames/JPL-Caltech/NASA via Getty Images)

Extrasolar Planet HD 209458 b, Osiris
Artist's conception released by NASA of extrasolar planet HD 209458 b, also known as Osiris, orbiting its star in the constellation Pegasus, some 150 light years from Earth's solar system. Scientists have used an infrared spectrum -- the first ever obtained for an extrasolar planet -- to analyze Osiris' atmosphere, which is said to contain dust but no water. The planet's surface temperature is more than 700 Celsius (1330 Fahrenheit).'
Planet & Its Parent Star
Picture released 04 October 2006 by the European Space Agency shows an artist's impression of a Jupiter-sized planet passing in front of its parent star. Such events are called transits. When the planet transits the star, the star's apparent brightness drops by a few percent for a short period. Through this technique, astronomers can use the Hubble Space Telescope to search for planets across the galaxy by measuring periodic changes in a star's luminosity. The first class of exoplanets found by this technique are the so-called 'hot Jupiters,' which are so close to their stars they complete an orbit within days, or even hours. A seam of stars at the centre of the Milky Way has shown astronomers that an entirely new class of planets closely orbiting distant suns is waiting to be explored, according to a paper published 04 October 2006. An international team of astronomers, using a camera aboard NASA's Hubble telescope, delved into a zone of the Milky Way known as the 'galactic bulge', thus called because it is rich in stars and in the gas and dust which go to make up stars and planets. Bill Nye Answers: If Humans Colonize Mars, How Will We Evolve?
Bill Nye Answers: If Humans Colonize Mars, How Will We Evolve?
NASA
IN BRIEF
Bill Nye explains how he think the human body would evolve on Mars, where the surface gravity is only 38 percent of what we have here on Earth.
While Nye is skeptical that humans will ever colonize Mars, he does believe we should do what we can to put a science station on the Red Planet.
Bill Nye doesn’t believe we’ll ever colonize Mars, but if we do, he has an idea of how our bodies might adapt to survive on the Red Planet. He recently shared it via his “Tuesdays with Bill” series for Big Think.
Humans born on Mars might have a tough time surviving on Earth. The surface gravity of Mars is only 38 percent of what we have here on Earth. That means the hearts of humans born on that planet might not be able to tackle as much aerobically on Earth. In fact, astronauts who travel to Mars and stay there long enough for their bodies to adjust to the lower level of gravity will likely experience permanent changes in circulation, muscle strength, and bone density, making it impossible for them to return to Earth.
Would our bodies ever truly adapt to Mars? Well, evolution is slow. In fact, the process is barely noticeable. Serious selection pressure would be necessary for it to have a discernible effect on the population, for example, only the offspring of women who could handle Martian gravity surviving long enough to reproduce.
Some people believe that terraforming planets such as Mars is a better idea — rather than waiting for our bodies to adapt to the planet’s environment, we’d change the environment to adapt to us. In the case of Mars, we’d have to alter its ecology, atmosphere, topography, temperature, and other traits.
Ultimately, Bill Nye doesn’t see it happening — although he likes the question being asked!
The 305-meter telescope at Arecibo is just one of a collection that SETI will use to search nearby stars for electronic signals that could indicate intelligent life. If such a civilization was utilizing a similar dish to image exoplanets, SETI's team should be able to detect it.

The Debate
When many people look at the stars, they see a vast, unbound infinity that fills them with a feeling that’s difficult to describe but impossible to forget. That feeling pushes humanity to want to explore the great unknown reaches of space in the hopes of discovering that we aren’t alone in it.
But let’s assume for one moment that extraterrestrial life does exist. Should we really be trying to contact it?
Some view the idea of reaching out to extraterrestrials as dangerous. In fact, Stephen Hawking made a strong point against the idea of making contact by comparing it to the Native Americans’ first encounter with Christopher Columbus and the European explorers, a situation that “didn’t turn out so well” for the former civilization. Hawking went on to note that advanced alien life could be “vastly more powerful and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria.”
While that does sound like it could be a possibility, not everyone agrees with Hawking. In fact, many have equally convincing arguments in support of contact with aliens.

Nothing to Lose
To some, the question is a no-brainer. Why wouldn’t we want to meet other intelligent lifeforms? That’s the thought shared by the people at the SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence) Institute. In fact, SETI is now far more proactive in its search for alien life than ever before.
Initially, the organization focused on passively looking for signals indicating signs of intelligent life, but now it is taking action in the form of METI (Messaging Extra Terrestrial Intelligence). METI International sends greetings to specific locations in space in the hopes of alerting alien astronomers of our existence.
Though Hawking and others worry that our interstellar friendship search will lead to the annihilation or subjugation of our species as a whole, Douglas Vakoch, the president of METI International and a professor in the Department of Clinical Psychology at the California Institute for Integral Studies, strongly disagrees with this assertion. He believes that claims that we should hide our existence as a species are unfounded. After all, we have already leaked nearly 100 years of transmissions from radio and television broadcasts as electromagnetic radiation.
Vakoch goes on to note an inconsistency in Hawking’s reasoning. He asserts that any civilizations able to travel between stars will absolutely have the ability to pick up our “leaked” signals. By that logic, they must already be aware of our existence and are simply waiting for us to make the first move. Vakoch urges us to test the Zoo Hypothesis and the Fermi Paradox through standard peer-review methods, insisting that we target nearby star systems 20 or 30 light-years away with repeat messages to generate a testable hypothesis within a few decades.
NASA estimates that there are 40 billion habitable planets in our galaxy. While he strongly urges caution in making first contact, even Hawking is curious as to whether any of those planets beyond our solar system host life. To that end, he has launched a $100 million initiative to seek out life. If we ever do find extraterrestrial life, either through Hawking’s search, SETI, or any of the number of other projects in the works, we might just want to take a beat before saying “Hello.”
The breakthrough has been made after scientists initially found strange activity around a distant star called KIC 8462852 but better known as Tabby’s star.
It appeared to lose a quarter of the light it emits, suggesting something huge was orbiting around it.
Some experts believed the object could be a “megastructure” built by an alien race with technology far superior to ours that has solar panels sucking in the light.

A police force has admitted dispatching officers to investigate UFO FLYING SAUCERS - after logging a series of terrified ‘ aliens ’ calls from on-lookers.
Lancashire Police, via a Freedom of Information request, confirmed that officers were sent out eight times in two years to sightings of ‘alien crafts’.
But the force confirmed that not once did their uniformed PCs find any evidence of the existence of UFOs over the north-west of England.
Officers responded to two of the reports after a sighting of two “crafts” over leafy Pendle Hill in 2015 and another in Lytham St Annes, near Blackpool, the year before.
A report of a “beam of light from a UFO” was sent to officers in Burnley in 2015 with another sighting submitted the previous year in Buckshaw Village.
Two UFOs were said to be seen in the sky over Fleetwood in 2015 and a reported red craft and another white one were spotted over Bottle last year.
Then in March last year they were contacted over a suspected alien abduction in Accrington, Lancs, while the following month they were called over a UFO “landing” in Marsden Park, Nelson.
Lancashire has a long history of UFO sightings - with one in Burnley, in November 1995 prompting a staggering 250 calls on the same day.
On that occasion hundreds of members of the public claims to have seen an object in the sky which was travelling at high speed towards Hebden Bridge.
Andy Sierolawski, from Todmorden Observatory, said: “We get asked if we have ever seen anything all the time.
“Around 40 per cent of the people who visit the centre ask us. Saturn and Venus as well as aircraft can very easily be mistaken for something else.”
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “With any call received into the police force control room the operator assesses each and identifies any risk/threat/harm.
“The operator provides the appropriate response to this, which may include deploying an officer.
“Sometimes these calls are not what they may seem so a potential UFO call could be a suspicious light or suspicious movement.
“That could mean any number of things and we would assess and deploy officers if required, or there could be a concern for the caller’s welfare.”
According to Ancient Indian history –one of the most extensive on the planet– their ancient sacred texts called the ‘Vedas’ speak of incredible flying ships that visited our planet over 6000 years ago. The Ancient Vimana’s power source has turned out to be not only accessible to the entire world, but easy to harness as well.
Throughout history, many common myths and legends mention incredible flying machines and how ancient people traveled great distances through the air: the flying carpets of ancient Arabia, Ezequiel’s wheel, and Solomons ability to travel from one place to another and the magical chariots or ‘vimana’ mentioned in ancient Indian and Chinese texts.
According to Ancient Indian history –one of the most extensive on the planet– their ancient sacred texts called the ‘Vedas’ speak of amazing flying ships that visited our planet over 6000 years ago. While there are many who oppose the existence of the Vimana, millions of people around the world are concerned that thousands of years ago, ancient mankind was visited by incredible flying machines, piloted by the ‘gods’. With the help of the Vimana, ancient astronauts visited different places on out planet with ease, spreading knowledge and wealth among ancient, primitive civilizations.
Reference to the ancient Vimana can be found in the Mahabharata, which is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India:
“At Rama`s behest, the magnificent chariot rose up to a mountain of cloud with a tremendous din. Another passage reads: Bhima flew with his Vimana on an enormous ray which was as brilliant as the sun and made a noise like the thunder of a storm.
In the ancient Vymanka-Shastra ( a science of aeronautics), there is a description of a Vimana: “An apparatus which can go by its own force, from one place to place or globe to globe”.
Dr. Raghavan points out, “The text’s revelations become even more astounding. Thirty-one parts of which the machine consists-are described, including a photographing mirror underneath. The text also enumerates 16 kinds of metal that are needed to construct the flying vehicle: `Metals suitable, lighare 16 kinds`. But only three of them are known to us today. The rest remain untranslatable.”
Another authority who agrees with Dr. Raghavan`s interpretations is Dr. A.V. Krishna Murty, professor of aeronautics at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. “It is true,” Dr. Krishna Murty says, “that the ancient Indian Vedas and other text refer to aeronautics, spaceships, flying machines, ancient astronauts. “A study of the Sanskrit texts has convinced me that ancient India did know the secret of building flying machines and that those machines were patterned after spaceships coming from other planets.” “
However, what fueled these ancient Vimana?
The Vaimānika Śāstra, an early 20th-century Sanskrit text on aerospace technology, makes a claim that he vimānas mentioned in ancient Sanskrit epics were advanced aerodynamic flying vehicles, similar to a rocket capable of interplanetary flight as backed up by the ancient alien theory.
Revealed in 1952 by G. R. Josye, the texts contain 3000 shlokas in 8 chapters which Shastry claimed was psychically delivered to him by the ancient Hindu sage Bharadvaja. The propulsion of the Vimanas According to Kanjilal (1985) is by a “Mercury Vortex Engines”, a concept similar to electric propulsion.
However, many people argue that a far greater, more accessible and ‘free’ power source was available to the ancient Vimana craft.
It is noteworthy to mention that a couple of years ago, Chinese researchers discovered ancient Sanskrit documents in Lhasa, Tibet, dating back thousands of years. The ancient texts were sent to the University Chandigarh for translation. The results were shocking. According to Dr. Ruth Reyna the translated texts, allegedly are ‘blueprints’ for the construction of interstellar spaceships.
According to the translated documents, the propulsion system designed for the spaceships was based on antigravitational technology, and based on a system analogous to that of “laghima,” the unknown power of the ego that exists in man’s physiological makeup, “a centrifugal force strong enough to counteract all gravitational pull.”
Interestingly, according to Hindu Yogis, the mysterious “laghima” force is what enables people to levitate.
Dr. Reyna explained that „on board these machines which were called ‘Astras,’ the builders of the crafts could have sent a detachment of men to any planet. The manuscripts, however, do not mention how interplanetary communication was achieved, but they do mention a trip from the Earth to the Moon, though it is unclear whether the trip was just planned or actually carried out. (source)
However, one of the great Indian epics, the Ramayana, does have a highly detailed story in it of a trip to the moon in a Vimana (or “Astra”), and in fact details a battle on the moon with an “Asvin” (or Atlantean” airship. (source)
Indian scientists were extremely reserved about the value of these documents but became less so when the Chinese announced that certain parts of the information were being studied for inclusion in their space program. (source)
But can we actually ‘reverse engineer’ ANCIENT technology? Well… depends on what you think is possible. Interestingly in the Sanskrit Samarangana Sutradhara, it is written:
“Strong and durable must the body of the Vimana be made, like a great flying bird of light material. Inside one must put the mercury engine with its iron heating apparatus underneath. By means of the power latent in the mercury which sets the driving whirlwind in motion, a man sitting inside may travel a great distance in the sky. The movements of the Vimana are such that it can vertically ascend, vertically descend, move slanting forwards and backward. With the help of the machines, human beings can fly in the air, and heavenly beings can come down to earth.” (source)
Interestingly, the Law of the Babylonians, the Hakatha unambiguously states:
“The privilege of operating a flying machine is great. The knowledge of flight is among the most ancient of our inheritances. A gift from ’those from upon high’. We received it from them as a means of saving many lives.” (source)
“The Pushpaka Vimana was a gigantic ‘plane’ the size of a large city entirely capable of holding unlimited numbers of people…”
“…Three flying-cities were made for and were used by the Demons…One was in a stationary orbit in the sky, another moving in the sky and one was permanently stationed on the ground. These were docked like modern spaceships in the sky…and at a fixed latitude/longitude. Siva’s arrow obviously referred to a blazing missile fired from a satellite specially built for the purpose…Vestiges of onetime prosperous civilization destroyed in battles flicker through these legends…” – Prof. D.K. Kanjilal’s observations of the Matsyapurana
Harnessing Earth’s natural energy
But is it possible that the ancient Vimana’s were built so they could access the planet’s natural energy? What if thousands of years ago, ancient flying machines used Earth’s natural energy to charge and reload? Is it possible that ancient monuments like pyramids were, in fact, giant energy transmitters that fueled the ancient Vimana?
Interestingly Stone like metal can be charged and is able to carry out electrical charges. What if ancient sites on Earth were specifically placed on so-called magnetic vortexes or electrical ‘Ley Lines’? What if there is a far greater meaning to the countless number of ancient Indian Pyramids, monoliths, megalithic statues, steles, obelisks and totems, and what if all of these structures, not only from ancient India but different civilizations around the world, had a special scientific purpose: to transmit vast amounts of energy.
Many researchers argue that intricate ancient stonework attributed to the Incas, Egyptians, East Indians, Maya and other ancient civilizations has a specific purpose, and was not only esthetic in nature.
It is noteworthy to mention that many consider the great Pyramid of Giza as one of the best examples of ancient energy machines. It was a Tesla-like power plant created thousands of years ago. It was a huge ancient structure that was capable of using the Earth’s natural properties in order to create or produce a great amount of energy. This energy is believed to have been used by the ancient Egyptians and other cultures such as the ancient Maya and other cultures around the globe for millennia. This theory, however, has been firmly rejected by mainstream researchers.
If we approach the history of ancient civilizations from another perspective, we will encounter that ancient civilizations around the globe were, in fact, extremely sophisticated and used advanced technologies thousands of years before mainstream science ‘reinvented them’.
These advanced technologies were present in ancient Egypt, Ancient Sumer, and in North, Central and South America.Electricity, electrochemistry, electromagnetic technology, metallurgy, advanced engineering, including hydrogeology, chemistry, physics and advanced forms of mathematics and astronomy were all used thousands of years ago to great extents.
NASA had recently announced the results of its Discovery Program competition, which would decide where the agency would send its next outer space probe. The options: two asteroid missions or two individual Venus orbiters (another option involved an infrared space telescope). Grinspoon had been investigating Venus for most of his 30-year career. But NASA, to his chagrin, had gone with the asteroids.
"People talk about finding Earth 2.0," Grinspoon told me at the American Astronomical Society's winter meeting, frustration evident in his voice. "We have Earth 2.0 sitting right there, and we're ignoring it."
Over the last 65 years, NASA has sent nine orbiters and eight landers or rovers to Mars, triggering a wave of public fascination with the Red Planet. Over the same period, the agency has sent just three orbiters to Venus, the planet whose size and mass are so close to our own that it's often referred to as “Earth's twin.” That's a shame, says Grinspoon, because Venus has the potential to tell us far more about both our own planet and Earth-like worlds around other suns.
Today Venus is a smoldering death trap, with a thick atmosphere that traps heat in an extreme version of Earth's own global warming effect. But it once hosted liquid oceans, and may have been the solar system's first habitable planet. Understanding what made Venus spiral out of control could help scientists understand how more life-friendly planets are able to remain hospitable, as well as provide a hint of what Earth could face should our own atmosphere veer too far off-track.
“It’s incredibly scientifically compelling to understand a planet that’s essentially in the same part of the solar system, the same size as Earth, the same mass of Earth—and yet is so different,” says planetary geologist David Senske, a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California who has worked with Grinspoon. Senske, too, is already looking toward the next potential Venus mission.
But after the most recent defeat, Grinspoon isn’t so sure. “Eventually, it will happen, but I’m not holding my breath,” he says. “Like Charlie Brown, I’ve run to kick that football many times, and ended up on the ground, looking up at the sky, wondering what happened.”
A Tough Nut to Crack
When it comes to habitable worlds, astronomers tend to focus on what’s known as the Goldilocks zone, or zone of habitability: that narrow band of space in which a planet is neither too hot nor too cold for liquid water to exist on the surface. That’s why exoplanets orbiting their stars at just the right distance—like three of the seven planets in the newly discovered TRAPPIST-1 system—tend to attract a lot of attention. We hope one will end up being the just-right bowl of porridge that can sustain life.
Earth’s conditions, of course, are considered the ideal for harboring life. But if Earth is the ideal, then Venus is a pretty close match. At 7,500 miles in diameter, the Morning Star is only slightly smaller than Earth and a bit less massive. And despite its current dry climate, observations from NASA's Pioneer mission have suggested the planet once held a liquid ocean, and models that Grinspoon worked on suggest that the ocean may have lasted for billions of years, giving life plenty of time to evolve.
At some point, however, the planet’s atmosphere took over. An overabundance of carbon dioxide triggered an extreme global warming effect, which resulted in the destruction of the planet’s most habitable regions. Today, temperatures at the surface reach a scorching 470 degrees Celsius, and the crushing surface pressure is comparable to what you’d find more than half a mile beneath Earth’s oceans. The dense clouds of sulfuric acid only serve to make the planet more intimidating.
That may help explain why NASA has remained hesitant to invest in exploring the planet, preferring to turn its attention toward the less-threatening Mars or other parts of the solar system. When it comes to understanding how the planet became so hellish, “Venus is a tough nut to crack,” Senske says.
According to Jim Green, director of NASA's planetary science division, part of the reason the agency has shied away from Venus in recent years is due to the wealth of potential targets available to explore. “We have such an embarrassment of riches in this solar system,” Green says. Funding, as always, is another issue: “We have so many things that we want to do that we just can’t do it all.”
Yet Green insists that the space agency hasn’t permanently abandoned Earth’s twin. “We’re serious about Venus—we’ve always been serious about Venus,” he says. He points out that NASA took a brief hiatus from Mars as well, before diving in with the latest Curiosity mission and orbiters. Of course, the Red Planet’s break lasted less than a decade—while NASA’s last Venus mission, Magellan, ended in 1994.
Venus may not prove ripe for life today, but it could help scientists figure out what to look for as they probe potentially habitable worlds beyond the solar system. Understanding just how much of the planet’s downward spiral relates to its location and how much relies on other characteristics could help scientists figure out which of the rocky, Earth-sized worlds around other stars might be habitable—and which might end up being another Venus.
“If we want to know how to lose habitability on the inner edge of the habitable zone, there’s no better place to look than Venus,” says Grinspoon.
Exoplanet scientists are only just beginning to learn about the cloudy atmospheres of distant worlds, with a strong focus on the more massive gas giants. Over the last decade, they've turned the Hubble Space Telescope towards exoatmospheres, and NASA's upcoming James Webb Telescope, should help part the clouds even further when it launches in 2018. As our ability to probe exoplanet atmospheres improve, Venus’ clouds could help us decipher other rocky exoplanets.
“It really does come down to the atmospheric characterization of these worlds to know what it’s like. That’s going to be key in the future,” says Hannah Wakeford, an exoplanet scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center who investigates the atmospheres of worlds outside the solar system. “Understanding the critical differences between our two planets is really an important thing we should be doing.”
Is Venus Rising?
Although NASA hasn’t sent a mission to Venus in nearly 30 years, the agency has kept a wandering eye on the planet. Galileo and Cassini both flew by on their way to the outer planets, and MESSENGER snuck a peek en route to Mercury.
In fact, the United States may be helping with the next Russian mission to Venus. Later this week, a team of NASA-sponsored scientists will meet with the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute to continue work on the proposed Venera-D mission to Earth’s twin, according to a recent press release. Earlier this year, the nations’ Joint Science Definition Team identified their shared science objectives for the planet, which they outlined in a report released last Friday.
The Russian-led mission, whose full name is Venera-Dolgozhivuschaya (meaning "long-lasting"), plans to drop a lander on the surface while also deploying an orbiter to make its own studies. The mission’s science objectives would focus on key questions about the atmosphere and how it interacts with the surface, according to a January report. Senske, who is co-chair of the team, says the lander would resemble Russian landers of the past, surviving for several hours on the surface—a feat in itself.
“The main question for Venus is about the mechanisms which made it so different from the Earth,” says Russian team member and planetary scientist Mikhail Gerasimov by email. “There is a global practical interest about the evolution trend of the Earth.” In other words, studying Venus could help scientists identify if Earth too could one day end up on the climate road to no return.
That global worry is what has drawn Russia and the U.S. together over a proposed Venus mission, despite the changing political climate over the past few years. While the mission isn't confirmed and wouldn’t launch until after 2025, Green seemed unperturbed about the concern that American politics might impact its viability. “In a way, science is that one gratifying thing that continues on no matter what the politics are,” he says, pointing to how scientists from both countries continued to work together through the Cold War. He also highlighted NASA’s “wonderful relationship” with its Russian counterpart when it comes to the International Space Station.
“What our space nations have done, cooperating and working together, really deserves a Nobel Peace Prize,” he says.
If it does move forward, Venera-D could help pull Venus back to the forefront of planetary science as the mission seeks to answer questions about the evolution of Earth and other habitable planets in the universe. As Grinspoon points out, “there is a difference between Earth-sized and Earth-like." Pinpointing what that difference is could help us figure out which of the worlds orbiting nearby stars are truly habitable.
After being part of half a dozen failed Venus mission proposals over his career, Grinspoon is still cautious that the current mission proposal will bear fruit. But others remain hopeful. “Venus’ time is coming,” Senske says. “Stay tuned. I think Venus is rising here.”

New Linda Moulton Howe Earth is an Ancient Alien Laboratory [FULL VIDEO]
Published on Mar 15, 2017
In this stunning new Linda Moulton Howe video, she talks about of how planet Earth has been the laboratory playground of Ancient Aliens for over 270 million years. Linda explains Ancient gods and myths are all real - ancient gods were beings with advanced intelligence who visited planet Earth and affected human history, for better and for worse. In fact, ancient hieroglyphics do appear on modern-day UFOs: "Some people that have worked in these facilities have all talked about ancient hieroglyphics on these crafts."
Linda Moulton Howe explains UFOs and ET life is a complex, mysterious and difficult topic to investigate and has been kept top secret for purposes of national security. They take enormous measures to keep it secret, because they really feel that is what is needed to deal with the UFO phenomenon for all of us. There are good and bad ET species, referred to as "friendlies" and "unfriendlies," and they are at war in space and on our planet.

UFOs, Kenneth Arnold and the American Bible
UFOs, Kenneth Arnold and the American Bible
Kenneth Arnold was the original credible witness, a straight-shooting, down-to-earth ex-Boy Scout. Jacques Vallee wrote, "I now think of referring to the (flying saucer) problem as 'the Arnold Phenomenon' after that celebrated witness, businessman Kenneth Arnold." (11 April 1963 entry, Forbidden Science Volume I.) However, in the years since, Arnold's role as the herald of the UFO age has been diminished by the overemphasis and promotion of the Roswell crash franchise. His role is important, and there's a lot more to his story.
Shortly after his encounter, Arnold had the first of many other sightings on his flight to Maury Island, a trip that began his informal role as the first civilian UFO investigator. He became interested in Charles Fort's books of phenomena and joined the Fortean Society. Over the years, he came to believe that the objects he'd seen were living creatures, possibly related to what Ezekiel had described in the Book of Revelation. There's a lot more to Kenneth Arnold's story than just his first sighting, but UFO history has largely ignored the story.
Ray Palmer and an Amazing Book
UFO historians have sought to diminish or deny the role of another pioneer, Raymond A. Palmer, who was promoting the reality of extraterrestrials space ships visiting the Earth as early as 1945. Palmer was a science fiction author, but interested in the reality of space travel, Fortean phenomena, Theosophy and all sorts of paranormal topics, so in 1948 he created a non-fiction magazine to discuss them, Fate magazine. Palmer wrote to Kenneth Arnold and persuaded him to tell his story, which became the cover feature for the first issue of Fate. As a result, the two men became life-long friends and worked together, the best-known example being their collaboration on the 1952 book, The Coming of the Saucers. In 1945 Ray Palmer became fascinated with something that's been called the American Bible, "... an amazing book called 'Oahspe' which purports to be a history of the past 79,000 years, both of the earth and of heaven... which ties into a cohesive whole all the legends and folktales of the world, and all the archeological discoveries of the past, and depicts a logical and convincing, and for the most part provable relationship between all the races of mankind for LONGER than science says civilized men existed on the earth, or even cave-men!" (Amazing Stories December 1945)
"Oahspe, A New Bible in the Words of Jehovih and His Angel Embassadors" was published in 1882, by John Ballou Newbrough supposedly written by automatic writing, channeling the word of Ormazd, "the Creator." In The UFO Phenomenon: Fact, Fantasy and Disinformation, John Michael Greer describes it's significance to UFOs and the extraterrestrial hypothesis.
"Like many channeled works, Oahspe defies easy characterization. Written in the style of the King James Bible, it combines Christian imagery with ideas borrowed from many other religions... What sets it apart most strikingly from the religious visions of a previous century, though, is the way it locates its theology in outer space. Its angels and gods live on countless planets... and travel from world to world in Etherean vessels that range from little scout craft to vast mother ships the size of a planet."
Ray Palmer's Mystic Magazine, May, 1954
These vessels are referred to as fire, sun and "star-ships." An example from Oahspe: "Then Osire left this high place and with his host, aboard the etherean ship of fire, sat out toward the earth, at break-neck speed; for such was the disposition of this most determined god." Ray Palmer promoted the text in the pages of his magazines over the years, and went on to publish three versions of it between 1960 and 1972, writing that, "Oahspe is truly a gateway to understanding."
Arnold's Souvenir Card
In 1950 Kenneth Arnold published The Flying Saucer as I Saw It, an the illustrated pamphlet to be sold as a souvenir at his lectures on the topic. He used the same saucer image for a calling card. His daughter, Kim Arnold wrote: “Kenneth Arnold used to give out philosophy cards to the many people he would meet. They were the size of a common business card. The front of the card had the image of the second to the last of the nine flying saucers he saw on June 24, 1947. The back of the card expressed this quote:”
Many people have inquired as to my philosophy – due to my involvement in the phenomenon known as "Flying Saucers.” The following I accept is worth thinking about.
A great man is the unbelieving man; he is without spiritual sight or spiritual hearing; his glory is in understanding his own understanding. It is he who subdues the forest, tames the beasts of the field to service. He goes alone in the dark, unafraid. He follows no man’s course, but, searches for himself; the priests cannot make him believe, nor the angels of heaven; none can subdue his judgment. He says: why permit others even priests, to you think for you? Stand on your own feet – be a man. Through his arm are tyrants and evil kings overthrown. Through him are doctrines and religions sifted to the bottom and the falsehood and evil in them cast aside. Who but the Creator could have created so great a man as the unbeliever?
KENNETH ARNOLD
It's an unusual piece of writing, not what you'd expect out of a man like Arnold. It turns out the language is taken from scripture. It's taken from Ray Palmer's beloved Oahspe.
Oahspe, a New Bible in the Words of Jehovih and His Angel Embassadors, Page 361
26. Nevertheless, the Creator created a great man amongst these; and such is the unbelieving man. He hath neither gold nor silver, nor house nor land; and he is without spiritual sight or spiritual hearing; but his glory is in understanding his own understanding. 27. He it is that subdueth the forest, and tameth the beasts of the field to man's service. He goeth alone in the dark, fearing naught. He followeth not the course of any man, but searcheth for himself; the priest cannot make him believe, nor can the angels of heaven; none can subdue his judgment. He beholdeth the glory of the earth and of manhood. He calleth to the multitude, saying: Why permit ye others, even priests, to think for you? Arise, O thou, and be a man! Arise, O thou, and be a woman! 28. He inspireth of the earth and for the earth; through his arms are tyrants and evil kings overthrown. Through him are doctrines and religions sifted to the bottom, and the falsehood and evil in them cast aside. Yea, who but Ormazd could have created so great a man as the unbeliever?
We can't know exactly how Arnold came to use the Oahspe text on his calling card, but there can be little doubt that his friend, Ray Palmer, was influential in its genesis.
Space news has recently been dominated by the discovery of fascinating new exoplanets. After NASA announced the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 system, the internet briefly lost its mind with conjectures of these possibly habitable alien worlds. While those worlds might indeed harbor life, it is far too early to tell; based on the distance to the TRAPPIST-1 system, we might not know for decades. Just this week, however, a baffling exoplanet announcement by French astronomers has once more caught the imagination of space geeks everywhere and demonstrated that there are plenty of strange new worlds left to discover in the reaches of deep space.
The “planet” is relatively isolated and is not traveling through space as part of any group of stars or planets.
The announcement concerns the object CFBDSIR 2149-0403 (or CFBDSIR J214947.2-040308.9 if you’re not into the whole brevity thing), a strange object spotted by astronomers in 2012. While it first appeared to be a low-mass brown dwarf planet, a study published by researchers at Grenoble Alpes University is showing that CFBDSIR 2149-0403 might be a “rogue” planet which does not belong to a solar system, possibly the first of its kind. According to lead author Philippe Delorme, there are two likely hypotheses for the identity of the strange planet-like object:
CFBDSIR 2149-0403 is an atypical substellar object that is either a ‘free-floating planet’ or a rare high-metallicity brown dwarf. Or a combination of both.
Initial analyses concluded that CFBDSIR 2149-0403 was part of the AB Doradus Moving Group, a free-moving group of stars hurtling through the Milky Way. However, this new study conjectures that this “rogue” planet is indeed isolated and could even be an entirely unique celestial object.
The AB-Doradus group is a cluster of 30 stars of similar composition moving through space together.
According to the team’s open-source publication on arXiv.org, part of the problem in classifying CFBDSIR 2149-0403 lies in the fact that scientifically speaking, we have just begun to understand how to study the composition of exoplanets and other objects:
Our theoretical understanding of cool, low-gravity and/or metallicity-enhanced atmospheres is not yet robust enough to decisively discriminate between these two hypotheses, especiallybecause these physical parameters have very similar effects on the emergent spectra of such atmospheres.
Studies like these show just how little we know about even our galactic neighborhood, much less the expanse of the universe. As our telescopes and other long-range sensors improve, more and more mysterious, unexplained objects are being discovered. Who knows what unknown wonders might lie just beyond our perception?

According to recent reports, a large group of unidentified flying objects suspended regular operations at the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru.Twice.
The large collection of twelve airborne objects halted all aircraft from taking off or landing for three hours on February 12th at 7:38 pm local time. The event was leaked only days ago to the media by Ufologist Mario Zegarra, who was provided with documents from CORPAC, the corporation which owns and operates the airport. According to Zegarra, the radar tower was engaged in communications with pilots diverting them to another airport due to unusual radar activity. Zegarra stated,
The Jorge Chavez airport radar captured 12 unidentified echoes on its screen. Each identified with code 0000, which means a UFO…
Zegarra states that he heard recordings of the conversations between the control tower and the pilots, but those have yet to be released to the public.

During the incident, a second Ufologist, Joshue Cornejo, captured the image below in the same area as the airport using an infrared video camera. He and Zegarra claim that these twelve objects are the same ones that showed up on the airport’s radar system, and are responsible for the suspension of outgoing and incoming flights. According to Cornejo, the objects were not easily visible to the naked eye.

While this may be strange, the leaked documents also contained information regarding a second UFO incident on February 7th which also temporarily shut down the airport at 9:40 pm local time. According to the February 7th incident, the radar identified a large unknown object passing over the airport’s airspace.
An image of the CORPAC documents provided by Zegarra.
Perhaps one of the most famous airport UFO incidents occurred over O’Hare International Airport in 2006. Personnel in the radar tower, ground crews, pilots and passengers all reported seeing a large disk shaped object silently hovering over Gate C-17. The initial sighting was made by a ramp operator who contacted the tower and the crew of a United Airlines Flight 446. A dozen employees reported the object to their superiors, while many others also allegedly saw the object.
Regardless of one’s personal belief towards the UFO question, these two incidents over Peru ultimately caused significant inconvenience for the passengers who had to wait for the airport to resume flights. Furthermore, airports are busy with dozens of flights either ready to take off or land within minutes of each other, and the slightest misstep on the part of the radar crew, pilots, or ground crew can lead to tragic consequences.

Engineer recounts low-hovering triangle UFO
A Nevada witness near Austin reported a close encounter with a low flying and hovering triangle-shaped object about 300 feet long moving overhead under 500 feet, according to testimony in Case 82126 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness first saw a bright light ahead about 1,000 yards that appeared to be hovering.
Pictured: Near Austin, NV. (Credit: Google)
The reporting witness is a communications engineer who was leaving work at a remote radio site on Mount Callahan on February 15, 2017.
“We were driving down from Mount Callahan at 8p.m.” the witness stated. “We entered a clearing and saw a bright light in the sky just out in front of us about 1,000 yards. It was just sitting there about 30 degrees up in the air.”
The witness stopped his truck and got out to watch the object.
“In an instant, it became a very large triangle with two lights in each corner. The object appeared to rotate slowly for about a minute. The body blotted out the stars. Then it suddenly became a massive rectangle with about 30 lights around the parameter. It did not move or make any sound for about a minute.”
The object suddenly appeared to be larger and it began to rotate. Pictured: Near Austin, NV.

The object then suddenly disappeared.
“Then it just was gone as if turning off a light. About five seconds later we could hear a very loud rushing air sound just above us, but we could not see anything above us, just stars. The sound got louder, then slowly as if flying away, got softer and softer until silence. This lasted about 20 seconds. This was an extremely remote commutations site, Our trucks were the only lights for 20 square miles. I felt that it had been watching us and then just appeared directly in front of us, did its little show and left.”
Nevada MUFON Assistant State Director Sandra Countissclosed this case as an Unknown.
“Two other black triangle cases were reported in the last month in Nevada,” Countiss stated in her report.“First one is Case # 80764 in Carson City. Second is Case #82130 in North Las Vegas near the Air Force base flight zones. There is another from November 2016, Case # 80486 near Laughlin.”
The object then disappeared as if a light switch had been thrown. Pictured: Near Austin, NV.

No photos or videos were included with the MUFON report, which was filed on February 16, 2017. Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.
ISLAMABAD – Residents of Gilgit and Ghizer Districts of Gilgit-Baltistan were panic-stricken on Wednesday night as they witnessed a huge blast and flash of light in the sky.
The incident happened at around 9 PM when locals in the Gilgit, Ghizer and neighbouring Diamer district heard a huge blast and suspected a UFO (Unidentified flying object) or any meteorite.
The blast was so severe that some of the citizens took to social media platforms and feared any plane crash or bomb blast in the purview of a recent string of attacks.
A resident, Zafar Iqbal said: ‘Hit somewhere in shilpi Ghizer but no casualities [sic]’
Another local, Arbab Musaweer Alam Khan stated that he was on a motorcycle when he saw red and yellowish stars and “something else” moving fast in the sky which then disappeared.
“This was much nearer to the earth which set the entire city alight,” he said.
People from Haripur and Islamabad also reported seeing a bright object flying fast across the sky towards the north.
The Information Department of Gilgit-Baltistan has now confirmed that the explosion and flashes were caused by a huge meteor crossing the sky over the Ghizer and Gilgit District.
There are unconfirmed reports that the meteorite may have fallen in a remote area somewhere between the Yasin and Gupis Tehsils of Ghizer District. This has yet to be confirmed though.
It is alleged that a UFO crashed into a farm near Rosewell, New Mexico in mid-1947. Official reports claim that the object that did crash at the site was a United States Air Force (USAF) weather balloon, but many others believe it was a flying disc of UFO origin.
This crash sparked conspiracy theorists and ufologists to formulate theories about the incident claiming that one or more UFOs had crashed at the site, the military had recovered the bodies of the aliens on board, and were suppressing the incident.
Lt Col Onizuka died in the Challenger space shuttle blast of 1986. Prior to that he revealed that he saw dead aliens. He allegedly made the statement to Clark C McClelland, a former operator of the NASA space shuttle fleet, and his colleague, Express reported.
He told McClelland about the incident when they were at NASA during a routine preparatory mission and asked McClelland for his views on alien life.
McClelland later wrote an article about their conversation titled 'Alien Disclosure From an Astronaut' and revealed what Onizuka had told him.
In the article McClelland wrote that "[Mr Onizuka] had a surprising experience along with other US Air Force (USAF) aerospace flight engineers and pilots while on military training duty at McClellan air force base, about eight or nine years prior to his astronaut training. He and this group were at this base for specialised training when they were directed to report to a viewing room," as quoted by Express.
"As they were seated, the room darkened and a movie began without the usual official introduction by a USAF officer."
According to McClelland, Onizuka told him he was shocked when the film showed a room the looked like it was meant for medical examinations, which had table-like objects in it with small bodies on them.
Here's what the video showing what Onizuka had seen in the film:
YouTube/ aliew yakamy
The military initially announced that it had spotted the remains of a crashed UFO in the nearby New Mexico desert, but the next day they changed their statement, saying it was a USAF weather balloon, which raised suspicions.
Alleged eyewitnesses said that alien bodies were present at the crash site and were removed, along with the remains of the craft, and carried to Nevada's top secret Area 51 military base.
Onizuka described the creatures to be strange, humanoid in shape and small in size; this description was similar to the one given by witnesses of the incident in 1947: "They all had large heads, large eyes, slight torsos, arms, and legs. They did not appear to be of earthly origin."
This video could be the real leaked Rosewell UFO crash footage:
Barwell and Earl Shilton have been singled out as hotspots for UFO sightings.
Reports of strange objects in the sky, gathered by The Hinckley Times and listed on a sky-watchers’ website, suggest the two neighbourhoods see the most sub-space activity of any location in Leicestershire.
A new article on history and heritage blog The Leicester Chronicle brings together a series of sightings going back to 1706.
Blogger Thomas Kirkup reckons the location of the town and village, close to one another and near to Hinckley but largely surrounded by open countryside, is the key factor in the swathe of flying object spots.
According to his research, Earl Shilton and Barwell is the county’s prime UFO country, with the largest number of sightings reported by locals.
Glowing objects and bright white balls of light were seen in the skies as reported in The Hinckley Times in May last year and March 2015.
Even more cases of eerie ethereal phenomenon are listed on the LUFOIN - Leicestershire UFO Investigation Network.
One weird happening in particular was observed by various witnesses across Earl Shilton, Barwell and Leicester Forest East on May 25 last year at around 10pm.
Six people in different locations were fascinated by a blue glowing object, hovering low over the ground and apparently accompanied by the smell of sulphur.
One man said: “I was heading back from delivering a spa pool at a customer’s when I turned onto Station Road and I saw a brilliant blue light passing over Earl Shilton.
“It was low, about 100 feet off the ground and about 20 foot wide by about ten foot high, it was moving in a zigzag pattern.”
Another recalled: “I was walking the dogs last night when we saw a very bright blue craft in the sky over Elmesthorpe.
“It wasn’t a meteor as it was moving controlled.
“I’m lost as to what it was as it wasn’t an aeroplane and not a chopper or drone.
“There was only a humming noise I could hear, and a mouldy egg smell as it passed over.”
The smell was also detected by a third witness who said: “I saw a car-sized blue cut diamond UFO flying low over Barwell heading towards the village centre.
“There was a putrid smell in air as it passed over.”
Meanwhile another woman said: “My husband and I both noticed a bright blue, diamond-shaped aircraft in the sky hovering above the rugby ground near Beggars Lane, Leicester Forest East.
“It was shooting a red beam towards the ground.”
Listings on the LUFOIN page feature a host of sightings from 2016 which range from hovering cylinder-shaped objects to a trio of domed objects appearing following streaks of light.
Colours are usually white, green or blue.
On a nationwide website the most recent report in the area originates from Newton Linford in November last year.
The account recalls it was getting light, a motorist and her daughter saw ‘a kind of tailing egg shape’ in the sky, seeming to disappear then alter appearance.
Last year Hinckley Times reader Colin Saunders described his experience of seeing a UFO on the old Fosse Way in 1999.
An ex aerospace engineer, he created a model of the object he saw in the skies near Hinckley.
■ If anyone has seen anything unusual in the sky reports can be made to LUFOIN. Personal details remain confidential.
Curt Moseman and his family saw something right back of the house. He couldn’t explain it.
“We were a hundred feet from it,” Curt says.
He lives about a mile west of a missile silo near Roy, the same one where the malfunction happened involving Robert Salas in March 1967.
“About six miles west of Roy on the crick here is where we live,” Curt says.
It was March 7 of 2007, a dark moonless night. Curt’s 20-year-old son went out at about 10 p.m. to check on the herd of cows.
“He was watching a calf be born,” Curt says. “And he had a flashlight, turning it on and off. And all of a sudden this thing on the hill started flashing lights back at him.”
What?
“This thing came toward him and it was a few hundred feet in the air,” Curt says. “So he came to the house scared as hell. And he was just a shakin’.”
Curt wasn’t too sympathetic at first.
“I said, ‘Oh we’ve been calving for three weeks now and you’re probably tired. Just go to bed,’” Curt told his son.
Curt’s wife got all over him for that.
“She says, ‘Get out there. There might be something there,’ I was in my underwear but I said OK. And I wish I’d of taken my camera or my (doggone) iPad. Because that thing takes pictures.”
WHAT CURT SAW was worth photographing.
“All of a sudden, this thing was 90 to 100 feet away from us and it lit up,” Curt says. “There were seven lights, all eight foot in diameter. Poof, poof, poof. … All seven lights came on. It was probably 90 feet wide, 20 feet high. It didn’t give off no light on the outside of whatever it was. All the light was inside.”
Curt and his son were stunned in the pickup. The object, he says, was not moving.
“It was sitting on the ground, 100 feet from the road,” Curt says. “All the big lights came on, all seven of them, and when they all came on, this thing started going straight up. Real slow. It went up 10 or 20 feet and went across my hayfield. We started chasing it with the pickup, but all of a sudden it took off and got ahead of us and we lost track of it.”
What was it?
“I don’t know. I have no clue,” Curt says. “If it’s the Air Force they better let us know about the technology, I can tell you that.”
CURT’S CLOSE ENCOUNTERhappened twice that night. He says they went back to the original site and sat there, waiting.
“And all of a sudden, it’s above us, sitting in one spot,” he says. “And it’s watching us. For probably five minutes. Then all of a sudden the lights went out and we never saw it again.”
Curt and his boy did not see any sign of life inside the craft.
“But the weird thing is,” Curt says, “they were in the middle of my cows and I think they abducted one. Because six months later, a cow out of that herd came up (mutilated). Almost everything inside the cow was gone. I think they took one of my cows up and put something into it, and I think they come back six months later and took it. Now I’ve not told anybody that, but that’s what I think.
“No teeth marks. All the cuts were straight as hell and everything inside was gone. Weird.”
That, we think, is a little scary.
“I know,” Curt says. “It’s bothered me ever since.”
CURT, 60, SAYS HE’S not the only one with stories like this to tell.
“There’s a lot of other people around here who have seen the same thing, different lights and stuff,” he says. “One neighbor lady to the east had one land right in her corral when she was calving. I tell you what, in ’07 and into 08, ’there was a lotta (UFO) activity around here. And then nothing.”
Could it have been an Air Force craft?
“There ain’t no way,” Curt says. “This thing was so big and heavy. I don’t think it was us. I think it was something beyond (this earth). I do.”
He was asked if anyone has ever accused him of seeing things.
“Oh yeah, my buddies in Roy gave me hell for about a year,” Curt says. “Thank God I had my kid with me, or everyone would really think I’m crazy.”
He says things are good on the ranch these days.
“We’re doing fine,” Curt says. “I just wish that thing would come back so we could see it in the daylight.”
GERALD RAPP LIVES14 miles west of Fairfield on Highway 408. Been there for years, he says. Pretty peaceful out there, too.
Except for one night about 40 years ago.
“We had quite an experience,” he says. “I think it was ’74 or ’76 and at night about a half a mile from our place we saw lights blinking and blinking.”
A wreck on the highway, that’s what Gerald though. So he and two teenaged sons, Matthew and Mason, investigated.
“Well, it was not a wreck,” Gerald says. “There were lights coming and going in the air from a field, going and lighting and coming up and hovering above the highway. And then going back.”
Small lights, he says. Flickering lights.
“We got out of the pickup and went down there about 100 yards,” Gerald says. “And here out in the field was this big, lit-up, two-story hotel type of building. Only it wasn’t a building. It was setting in the field. You couldn’t see into it, but it had lots of windows. With little flickering lights moving all around it.”
GERALD SAYS HE WASN’Tcertain what to make of this.
“We thought ‘what in the world? How come the Air Force isn’t out investigating this?’” he says. “And all of a sudden here comes from Great Falls, that direction, a blinking, blinking deal. I says ‘Here comes the chopper right now, boys. They’re gonna see what’s going on.’
“So the chopper gets right overhead and it was not a chopper. It was a big disc-shaped object with a dome on it and everything. And I’ll be darned but it went over and lit behind the big building.”
Of course he says it was no building, either. And the boys wanted to get out of the pickup and go touch it.
“I said no, we’re not going over there at all,” Gerald says. “We kept watching it, and pretty soon the building starts lifting up off the field and starts going away, very slowly, to the south. And all the objects that were flickering around it followed right along until it disappeared from our view toward the Rocky Mountains.”
No kidding.
“No dream at all,” Gerald says. “We were all wide awake watching it from my pickup.”
To be an eyewitness, it was suggested, must be a frightening experience.
“No, it wasn’t,” Gerald says. “We were exalted to see this. I said ‘Look boys, you’ll never see this again.’ This is something nobody can explain.”
Gerald tries anyhow.
“I think it was something from another place, another planet,” he says.
JUST LIKE CURTin Roy, Gerald in Fairfield has caught some teasing about the story.
“People say, oh, you’re goofy, you musta been drunk, you were seeing things …” Gerald says. “I don’t tell it to everybody. But I’ve convinced, and so is my whole family.”
Earlier that evening, Gerald’s brother to the north had visited and mentioned seeing some funny lights in the sky.
“He said it was a flying saucer,” Gerald chuckles. “He was kidding, you know.”
But Gerald is dead serious.
As we asked Curt, we wondered if what Gerald saw could possibly have been an Air Force craft of some kind.
“Absolutely not,” he says. “This thing was hotel-sized, at least a block long and two stories high, and sitting in a stubble field. I know that field well. I’ve irrigated that field. And here it was plain as day. And it rises up slowly – me and the boys all saw it. My family all believes me.
“I don’t care if anybody believes me or not, but since you wanted to know that’s my story. And I’m sticking to it.”
GERALD AND CURT, two born and raised Montana men, have a matter-of-fact way of speaking. The truth is, they say, they’re witnesses to history.
And, they add, they’re not the only ones around here.
“I know that other people have seen similar types of things,” Gerald says. “And I know and they know that these are real things. But why the government will not admit it, I don’t know and don’t care. But they won’t. And they know more than I or you know about it, for crying out loud. But they will not inform the public.”
Needless to say, since that night Gerald and his family have been watching the sky every night.
“Absolutely,” he says. “We watch. And we have not seen anything since.”
Columnist Cheryl Costa breaks down the question about UFOs we all want answered.
JIMMY KIMMEL (RIGHT) AND BARACK OBAMA SHARE A EXCHANGE DURING A BREAK ON "JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE." PHOTO BY DOUG MILLS OF THE NEW YORK TIMES
The UFO question came about from Jimmy Kimmel. Not once, but four times in the past two years and seven months he has asked three former U.S. presidents and a presidential candidate the same query about UFOs. All of them brushed it off. Some side stepped it with a laugh, others with an uncomfortable snicker claiming they can’t talk about it.
Jimmy Kimmel is an entertainer and should be commended for bringing up the topic in front of a national television audience that a majority of Americans (70 percent, according to a 2012 National Geographic UFO poll) want to know the answer to. But why is Kimmel the one asking this challenging question?
Why haven’t journalists affiliated with mainstream news stations or newspapers or, better yet, the White House press corps asked the same hard question?Do these world-class journalists feel that a question about UFOs and the extraterrestrial presence is silly and nonsensical?
How can the UFO subject matter be so trivial that the journalism elites can’t or won’t broach the question to current or former leaders? After all, how trivial can the subject matter be when a Canadian government memorandum, classified top secret from 1950 stated, “The matter is the most highly classified subject in the United States government, rating higher even than the H-bomb.”
In recent weeks I’ve had conversations with reporters and editors from around the country, and when I brought up the subject of UFOs, the tone of the conversation coldly changed to, “I’ve got to go.”
One editor literally laughed me off the phone. The most perplexing response came from the science editor from a major newspaper who told me “the UFO question has been settled long ago.”
I could only wonder how he came to this conclusion. Perhaps he bought into the 1968 findings of the Condon Report to Congress. The finding recommended that no government funding should be spent researching UFOs, which killed the US Air Force’s project Blue Book. It also prevented any other government agency from directly researching the topic or granting federal funds to academic institutions to pursue research. Of course we have no idea what has been funded in the black budget and researched in classified agencies.
A medical doctor acquaintance of on mine suggested that the nervousness on the part of many of those editors and reporters to the topic of UFOs might be rooted in sub-conscious fears. Perhaps it’s a natural reaction to having their reality challenged.
In the 1960s, the average UFO sightings reported nationwide totaled in the hundreds every year. In the 1980s, those numbers began increasing. Since the year 2000, our nation averages about 8,000 UFO sighting reports per year. Something big has been happening. It’s time for our free press and media to wake up.
If you would like to review the Jimmy Kimmel interviews, here are links to all four:

Virginia UFO stops and hovers intermittently
Virginia UFO stops and hovers intermittently
A Virginia witness at Centreville reported watching a sphere-shaped object that stopped and hovered as regular air traffic passed by, according to testimony in Case 81071 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside about to give her son a driving lesson on December 20, 2016, when the incident began.
“Right before entering the driver’s side of my vehicle, I noticed in the sky to my left an object slowly moving from left towards my direction flashing two extremely bright, circular, white lights,” the witness stated.“At first I thought it was an airplane, but as it became more discernable, I noticed it had no wings, however, I could distinctly see that it was sphere-shaped with what looked like a white tail appendage sticking out from the rear.”
The witness watched as the object moved toward her location.
“I also noticed that the side of the object gave a brief reflection from the sun which allowed me to observe its metallic/aluminum body as it would look on an airplane reflecting off sun light. The object moved towards my standing location and then made a slight turn towards my right (its left) as it proceeded to slowly move across the sky.”
The witness described the object’s lights.
“The lights continued to glow off and on randomly. At times the lights would stop glowing or emitting light for about 5 to 7 seconds, and then would glow again. I noticed that the object came to a stop as soon as a passenger airliner flew by at a lower altitude below it, as if to observe it. The object then proceeded to continue its path moving from left to right across the sky.”

The witness then followed the object a few blocks out of the neighborhood to a more open area where the sky gave an unobstructed view.
“As I continued to look up, my son and I, who had been with me theentire time, noticed that the object stopped again. Suddenly, three white or silverish-colored airplanes appeared flying from right to left, one behind the other, leaving contrails in its path. I found the timing and the order in which these large airplanes were flying (one behind the other) rather strange. The airplanes flew in the direction of the UFO and passed a few thousand feet beneath it. The UFO blinked its lights a few more times as the airplanes flew by, and then moved around in circular directions, then slightly moved up, then down, then it continued to glow its light for a few seconds. The light then became dimmer to the point of going out, with the object becoming more transparent, but still discernible to my eye. The object’s light would then begin to glow some more with the object becoming more materialized and then slowly changing back to its transparent form until it eventually vanished in the sea of a beautiful blue sky.”
Centreville, VA, is about 30 miles west of Washington, D.C.

The witness reflected back on the experience.
“A few things that stayed with me after this experience were how magnificent and powerfully bright the lights were as they glowed. I could stare at them for hours. Also, how the object would stop when an airplane would fly by as if to observe it. How there was, clearly a what appears to be a white tail, coming from the rear which moved accordingly to the laws of physics. And lastly, the way it would move slowly across the sky and then stop, and change directions at will implying a clear sign of intelligence behind the controls. Very creepy, however, amazing at the same time.”
Centreville is located in Fairfax County, VA, population 71,135. Virginia MUFON STAR Team member Norman Gagnon closed this case as an Unknown. Please remember that most UFO sightings can be explained as something natural or man-made. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Please report UFO activity to MUFON.com.
With the discovery of seven new exoplanets orbiting around their own star, it’s looking a tiny bit more likely that aliens are going to visit Earth at some point.
At least, that’s according to Nick Pope – who was in charge of the government’s UFO Project between 1991 and 1994.
Pope is one of the world’s leading experts on UFOs, conspiracy theories and the unexplained.
As part of a lengthy career in the Ministry of Defence, he spent four years heading up the government’s UFO department, preparing for a possible invasion – or friendly visit – from our celestial neighbours.
So, after all that time, what is the government’s plan?
‘There’s no plan.’
…Oh.
‘There’s no contingency plan as far as I’m aware,’ he told Metro.co.uk. ‘The government’s answer would be that, “We regard this as an incredibly small possibility”.
‘But I would say, why not have a plan if there’s even the smallest possibility of it happening.’
While this may be alarming to some, Pope did go one to say that an alien visit wouldn’t really look like the ‘War of the Worlds’ type of thing we’d expect.
Instead, he believed it would more closely resemble Arrival – which comes out on DVD on March 20 – in which each country puts together a team of scientists, cultural academics and military experts in order to try and communicate with the new species.
Especially since, given that they’ve managed to successfully visit Earth, they would undoubtedly already be several thousands years ahead of us technologically.
But this, in turn, could lead to some international conflicts, at least in the short-term.
Pope said: ‘There would be a scramble for the alien technology, and weapons. Some of the big countries – and also, nowadays, corporations – would be scrambling to get their hands on alien technology.
‘The country that gets that [technology] would be the world leader for the foreseeable future.’
Quick – steal his iPad

Although he went on to say that, in the long run, we’d all end up closer for it.
‘Ultimately this [an alien visit] might have a unifying effect,’ Pope said.
‘An extra terrestrial arrival might convince us that there’s more that binds us together than pushes us apart.’
So, while world leaders are scrambling their top people, what’s the best thing for normal people like us to do?
‘First, and it is a cliche, but don’t panic,’ Pope warns.
‘Don’t start running for the hills or shooting at alien ships. Wait for some of the finest minds on the planet to figure out what this is.’
At the same time, it never hurts to get yourself some insurance. David King, from Budget Insurance, told Metro.co.uk that they were starting a waiting list for a policy that covers alien invasions.
‘To be on the safe side, we’re opening a waiting list for customers who’d be keen to take out anti-alien damage cover should the need arise,’ he said.
And that ‘don’t shoot at alien ships’ bit is particularly important, he said, because we might one day need to leave the planet ourselves – and could do with a few tips.
‘One day we will have to move on, so it would be good to have some help from extra-terrestrials,’ he said.
‘At the moment we’re confined to Earth, but hopefully one day we’ll have the technology to take us to the stars.’
So our best plan is: chill, make friends with the aliens, steal their technology when they’re not looking.
