Plumes From Saturn’s Moon Enceladus Hint That It Could Support Life

Could icy moons like Saturn’s Enceladus in the outer solar system be home to microbes or other forms of alien life?
Plumes of gas erupting out of Enceladus — a small moon with an ocean of liquid water beneath its icy crust — contain hydrogen. Scientists infer a lot from that: that there are hydrothermal chemical reactions similar to those that occur at hot fissures at the ocean bottoms on Earth.
On Earth at least, hydrothermal vents thrive with microbial life, offering up the potential that icy moons far from Earth — called “ocean worlds” by NASA — could be habitable.
“That’s just going to be a tremendous opportunity to test our theories and see if there’s life there,” said James L. Green, director of planetary science at NASA.
This is the latest discovery by Cassini, which is heading into its final months after 13 years of exploring Saturn, its moons and rings. On April 22, Cassini begins a journey that will take it between the planet and its rings for 22 orbits before its mission finally ends with a crash into Saturn’s atmosphere in September.
Cassini’s findings also show that levels of carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane measured in the Enceladus plume were out of equilibrium, an imbalance that could provide an energy source that organisms could tap into for food, according to a paper published Thursday in the journal Science.

Mapping Saturn’s Moons
NASA’s Cassini spacecraft will make its final flyby of Saturn’s Enceladus moon on Saturday.
“It indicates there is chemical potential to support microbial systems,” said J. Hunter Waite Jr., program director for the space science and engineering division at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio and lead author of the Science paper.
In a separate paper published Thursday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, another team of researchers, using the Hubble Space Telescope, once again spotted what appears to be a similar plume rising from Europa, one of Jupiter’s big moons that also possesses an ocean beneath an icy exterior.
Cassini had earlier found that there are seas of methane on Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, a discovery that has inspired some scientists to suggest sending a boat there.
At a mere 310 miles wide, Enceladus was considered too small to be geologically interesting; scientists suspected that its interior had frozen solid long ago. But 11 years ago, Cassini spotted plumes rising from the south pole region, one of the biggest, most surprising discoveries of the mission.
The tidal forces of Saturn pulling and squeezing Enceladus appear to generate enough heat to melt the ice. From additional Cassini observations, scientists concluded that not only is there a pool of water near the south pole of Enceladus to generate the plumes, but a global ocean that lies beneath the moon’s ice.
In October 2015, Cassini swooped to within 30 miles of the surface of Enceladus, and one of its instruments collected and identified particles in the plume spray. It was mostly water molecules, but Dr. Waite and his colleagues also found hydrogen molecules, up to 1.4 percent by volume.

While hydrogen is the most common element in the universe, it was not expected to be found in any quantity on a moon as small as Enceladus, where the gravity is too slight to hold on to the gas for long.
“Just finding hydrogen was a surprise,” said Christopher R. Glein, a geochemist at the Southwest Research Institute and another author of the Science paper.
After considering a variety of ways that could continually generate hydrogen, the scientists concluded that hydrothermal reactions offered the most likely explanation for producing that much of the gas. Each water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Geophysical models indicated that as hot water flows past the rocks, minerals in the rocks were grabbing the oxygen atoms and releasing hydrogen, the scientists reported.
There appeared to be enough energy to support microbes. “This is the first time we’ve been able to make a calorie count of an alien ocean,” Dr. Glein said. Asked what that calorie count was, Dr. Glein said the energy available was the caloric equivalent of 300 pizzas per hour.
“This is a great result for the habitability of Enceladus,” said Christopher P. McKay, a planetary scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., who was not involved with the research.
Dr. McKay said the hydrogen levels are far above what microbes need.
Still, the presence of hydrogen does not prove that life exists on Enceladus. It might suggest the opposite.

In a dozen years orbiting Saturn, NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has changed our understanding of liquid in the outer solar system.

At hydrothermal vents on Earth, the hydrogen is quickly gobbled up by microbes. That so much hydrogen is rising through Enceladus’s ocean and reaching space could mean there is no life on the little moon to take advantage of it. At a department meeting, say, “if you have those stacks of pizzas, they disappear,” said Mary A. Voytek, head of NASA’s astrobiology program.
Or life could exist, but is limited by other factors. “If there is biology there, it isn’t very active,” Dr. Voytek said.
Scientists will not get any more data for a long time.
Cassini will make no more close flybys of Enceladus. The spacecraft is low on fuel, and the mission will come to a close in September. For the last few months, Cassini has shifted to a different orbit that will allow it to probe the interior properties of Saturn and take a close look at the inner part of its rings.
NASA has at present no plans to return to Saturn or Enceladus. But it is currently soliciting proposals for a mission with a price tag of up to $850 million, and one of the areas in which NASA specified an interest is a mission to explore Enceladus and Titan.
The Enceladus findings also aid the design of Europa Clipper, NASA’s next big planetary mission, which is to launch in the 2020s to study Europa.
In the new Astrophysical Journal Letters paper, researchers led by William B. Sparks of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore report on a Hubble Space Telescope observation in 2016 that revealed a likely plume of water vapor rising from the same spot on Europa where the researchers saw a similar plume two years earlier.
In addition, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft in the 1990s found that this location on Europa was unusually warm, and scientists would not be surprised to find hydrothermal vents there, too. “The geophysics is similar everywhere,” Dr. Voytek said.

In 2015, one of the airmen, John Burroughs, won compensation for illnesses he blamed on exposure to radiation from the event.
Mr Halt returend to Rendlesham with John Hanson and Dawn Holloway – authors of the Haunted Skies books, currently working on a second edition of The Halt Perspective – and by local ufologist David Young and Gary Baker, radar operator at RAF Neatishead from 1978-1980.
Mr Baker, from Ipswich, had returned from leave at the end of 1980 for the aftermath of the incident. He claims to have been told “this never happened” by RAF officers, and that radar tapes and bridge logs from the evening of the incident disappeared.
“Whatever the radar picked up, it wasn’t a subject of interest for interceptor aircraft because it didn’t come from the east – this was the height of the Cold War.
“It would have been sensible to quash any evidence. If something had happened, and it wasn’t picked up, it would have showed we weren’t capable of dealing with something from ‘above’.
“Later, I read the MoD said the radar had been switched off at the time, which is a load of rubbish.
“I’m no UFO nut, but something extraordinary happened here – outside the parameters of manned aircraft.”

SETI Institute artists are being inspired by our search for alien life.

If one thing animates scientists looking for life elsewhere in the universe, it is the power of cultural exchange—not just with alien species, but also, in more modest ways, among our own species. In 2010 Jill Tarter, then the director of the SETI Institute, met Charles Lindsay, a geologist turned artist, photographer, and musician who had just been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. She told him about the wide-ranging research happening at the institute and invited him to visit its observatory. He became “a beta test,” as he put it, for the institute’s artist-in residence program.
Some of the products of that program are now on display at New Museum Los Gatos in California through March 2017. The exhibition, called “Making Contact,” shows what happens when contemporary artists and leading scientists exchange worldviews or, rather, universeviews. “There’s not an artist I’ve met who doesn’t think the idea of an artist-in-residence program at SETI Institute is just about the coolest thing they’ve ever heard,” said Lindsay, who is now director of the residency program. “The scientists to a person have loved it.”
Art can convey a deeper understanding of science rather than surface-level information.
So far, half a dozen artists have come through the program, with another half dozen doing their residency now. Each residency lasts two years—a year to meet and talk to some of the institute’s nearly 70 scientists, a year to create a project inspired by the science.
Astrobiologist Laurance Doyle, who has studied everything from extrasolar-planet detection to quantum effects in astronomy to humpback whale songs, said the program has made it more clear to him how art can convey a deeper understanding of science rather than surface-level information. “I can see the value of art a lot more clearly than I did before,” he said, adding that art conveys the motivation behind the science and helps people grasp what’s intriguing and exciting about it. He has applied some of these lessons to his own presentations.
We’ve selected three projects from the exhibition that explore what’s in the universe beyond our horizons.

“Making History,” by artist and psychiatrist Martin Wilner, looks at first glance like pages torn from a wall calendar. But there are no dates, no days of the weeks, and no notes about appointments or holidays. The artwork is a stylized representation of the daily email correspondence Wilner had with 12 SETI Institute scientists, one per month. In each would-be calendar square, Wilner has drawn something tied to the scientist’s email from that day. Over the course of the month, the eclectic mix of miniatures coalesces into a coherent picture. On the other side of the page, Wilner reproduces the entire correspondence in word art. “I’m not trying to depict the totality of a person’s mind or their life, but to capture something meaningful about this shared experience,” he said.
“I can see the value of art a lot more clearly than I did before.”
Some of the scientists chose which month to participate based on what would happen in their projects at that time. Mark Showalter, a leader of the New Horizons mission to Pluto, picked July 2015, the month of the spacecraft’s Pluto flyby. “I said, well it’s gotta be July because that’s going to be the most fascinating and stressful and interesting and overwhelming month of my professional career,” he said. Looking back on the experience, he says the correspondence helped support him during the month, as if “this psychiatrist was keeping an eye on me and making sure I was okay.”

“Cosmic Microwave Mandala,” by artist and photographer Rachel Sussman, is a Tibetan-style sand mandala of the cosmic microwave background, an image of the early universe before the first stars and galaxies. Whereas most published images of the microwave background subtract out the foreground light of our Milky Way galaxy, she left it in as what she calls a “red gash.” “It made sense to me that we would have this human-centric view of it,” she said. She added: “We’re always trying to anthropomorphize these things, to form a connection.”
“The process of making the piece was incredibly challenging,” Sussman said. She had injured her back and pushed herself to work until she noticed herself getting sloppy. “I kept thinking, well, as it should be, because the universe wasn’t created in a day,” she said. At the end of the exhibition, the mandala will be destroyed, as is traditional for Buddhist mandalas. Sussman hopes to send some of the sand home with museum visitors.

“Somniuim” is an immersive piece by roboticists and multimedia artists Danny Bazo, Karl Yerkes, and Marko Peljhan. It reinterprets data from the Kepler mission, a space telescope that looks for exoplanets orbiting neighboring stars. (The piece is named for a science-fiction story written by the telescope’s namesake, astronomer Johannes Kepler.) The telescope records stellar brightness, looking for patterns that betray otherwise unseen companions, and the trio converted this brightness data to sound. They used raw light data, rather than the cleaned-up data, in order to capture the human quirks that shaped the data. “There’s a lot of stories in the data about when the telescope was turned on, when a particular piece failed, what was happening in a particular moment in time,” Bazo said. Yerkes added: “It also turned out to be a good aesthetic choice. It makes for a lot richer soundscape; there’s enough noise that it sounds, sometimes, like ocean waves.”
To create a visual piece to the installation, the trio etched a large glass disc with the first photograph Kepler took. The etching process used a laser—“literally using light as a hammer,” Bazo explained. “Like snowflakes, every single crater blast is unique. Under the microscope you can see this.” A microscope is programmed to wander across the disc like a lost record-player needle. As it travels, a screen displays its view, and speakers play matching Kepler data in acoustic form. “It kind of turns into a space orchestra,” Bazo said, conveying “this idea that we’re searching—almost like the cosmic radio dial.”

Ground Zero with Host Clyde Lewis
On a recent a recent airing of “Ground Zero,” a nationally-syndicated, conspiracy-focused program heard in the U.S. on the I Heart Radio Network, researchers Tim Beckley and Tim Swartz shocked bombastic host Clyde Lewis and his thousands of listeners by declaring that NOT ALL unidentified flying objects originate from the stars. Some may have been developed here on Earth by a group of Nazi earthling scientists who were working in collaboration with a group of Nordic-looking extraterrestrials channeling information to the German nationalists as far back as 1919.
This, say Beckley and Swartz, is partially the reason why there is no “Disclosure” in our future, because of fear that the American military would have to admit they have known about these “wonder weapons” in our sky ever since thousands of Nazi scientists and engineers were “legally” ushered into the United States under the highly classified “Operation Paperclip” program, which exonerated them from their war crimes, while many hundreds of other Nazis were executed or fled from the Fatherland.
The new book, “Nazi UFO Time Travelers: Do We Owe The Future To The Fuhrer?” is guaranteed to stir up a hornet’s nest of controversy.
While admittedly a sensational hypothesis, Beckley and Swartz, in collaboration with several other investigators, lay out their complex concept in a just released book, “Nazi UFO Time Travelers: Do We Owe The Future To The Fuhrer?” published by the Conspiracy Journal, an imprint of Beckley’s Global Communications paranormal publishing complex. For over half a century, Beckley and his writers have taken on just about every conceivable topic related to UFOs and Fortean phenomena. The iconoclastic Beckley and Swartz, who also co-host a weekly podcast, Exploring The Bizarre on KCORradio.com, produced “Nazi UFO Time Travelers” with the added assistance of “Phenomena Magazine” editor Brian Allan from the UK and, in the interest of full disclosure, myself.
At the outset we should explain that we in no way intended to glorify the Third Reich. In some instances, others have used the Nazi UFO theory as a springboard to promote pro-Nazi propaganda, which was the farthest thing from our minds. But, in all honesty, this complex theory needs to be bought to the attention of others who refuse to examine any of the evidence, evidence which indicates that we could be dealing with a number of explanations for the UFO phenomenon all rolled up into one. But the uppermost concern here is the acknowledgement that some of the craft we have been seeing in our skies could have been manufactured in underground bunkers somewhere in Germany during various phases of the Second World War. And if, indeed, some of these craft can travel through time, well, then some of the older sightings of “wonder weapons” could be attributed to highly advanced, Germanic technology.
Die Glocke – “The Bell”
As Beckley explains the matter in the book’s opening chapter, “Beyond the mere ability to fly what may still seem like technologically ‘miraculous’ aircraft is the haunting, troublesome possibility that the ships also function as time machines, bringing the ability to travel in time within human reach for the first time in recorded history. Devices like Die Glocke (translated as ‘The Bell’) may have been used to bend both space and time and give the Nazis the unthinkable power to explore the past freely and even to CONTROL THE FUTURE. Are we plummeting headlong toward a world under fascist domination – a nightmare in which grinning, sadistic, jackbooted thugs are waiting for us to ‘catch up’ in time with our own predestined subjugation to open worldwide rule by the Nazis, who are possibly hiding out on the surface of the moon or in ‘secret cities’ at the Poles? Do they lie in wait for us as the clock on our freedom runs down?”
At several archaeological sites, many bell- and saucer-shaped artifacts have been uncovered. Could this be proof of Nazi time travelers?
The concept is a little tricky, but it involves the idea that the Nazis were able to move into the future and exert total control once they got there. That concept does, of course, sound “fringe” on the surface. But, according to Beckley, we should not assume that the Nazis acted “alone” in achieving such a feat. They obviously had help from “Aryan Space Brothers” who seized an opportunity to use the fledgling Nazis to their own otherworldly ends. In other words, the aliens made building a time machine simple enough that mere humans, once properly instructed and provided with the raw materials, could accomplish the task sufficiently well in real-world terms.
What their motives were is open to dispute and debate. Some see the Aryan “Space Brothers” as friendly visitors from the future, while others wonder why they would want to share their secrets with a very negative group of earthbound scientists. Perhaps they were deceived by the attractive mediums who they thought they may have been related to. Or they could have simply lacked the information required to see their channels’ coming evil before sharing their technology.
Maria Orsitsch, also known as Maria Orsic, was a famous medium who later became the leader of the Vril Society.
The history of Adolph Hitler and the Nazis has always included elements of their occult beliefs, but the new book goes back further in time, to the early 20th century, and the mediums associated with the Vril Society. The female mediums, referred to as true “Nordic beauties,” began to channel messages from extraterrestrials whose origin was many light years away. The messages included the technical
designs of advanced aircraft unheard of in their day in addition to a kind of “blueprint” for a time machine. Some years later, Hitler himself, along with several of his SS henchmen, came under the influence of the Vril Society as he began his rise to power in a Germany that was sick enough and corrupt enough to be mesmerized by his unchecked anti-Semitism and militaristic obsessions.
When combined with the high caliber of scientists the Nazis “recruited” to design weapons for the war effort, which included now-legendary names like Wernher von Braun and Hermann Oberth, the fact that they had alien “help” along the way makes some of their more exotic advances a little more plausible.
In fact, the scientists themselves talked openly about this alien help.
The father of rocketry, Professor Hermann Oberth, said the space program was being helped by “Them.”
“We cannot take credit for our record advancements in certain scientific fields alone; we have been helped by the people of other worlds . . . We should think of the craft in the New Mexico desert as more of a time machine than a spacecraft.”
So said Professor Hermann Oberth, one of the early fathers of rocketry and the mentor to the young Wernher von Braun.
Meanwhile, von Braun himself stated in 1959 that: “We find ourselves faced by powers which are far stronger than we had hitherto assumed, and whose base of operations is at present unknown to us. More I cannot say at present. We are now engaged in entering into a closer contact with those powers, and in six or nine months’ time it may be possible to speak with more precision on the matter.”
While neither Oberth nor von Braun specify that they were aided in their efforts by Aryan Space Brothers, they are nevertheless surprisingly candid in what they DID say for public consumption. Their openness may have been part of some larger strategy to steer the belief in UFOs in the direction of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (or the “ETH” for short) and therefore away from a darker point of origin in the blueprints and designs of the Nazis. In the decades-long campaign of disinformation waged against the truth of the UFO phenomenon, Oberth and von Braun may have simply been firing another salvo of confusion and subterfuge. Or were they simply being sincere in reflecting on their own invention processes? Was there an undeniable alien presence working alongside them? Like most unanswered questions about the UFO phenomenon, the answers await their time.
Another fascinating thread of the story that Beckley holds fast to is this: In many alien abduction accounts, especially the early stories from the late 1950s and early 1960s, the UFO occupants are said to speak in German and to speak English with unmistakable German accents.
On Oct. 5, 1957, 48-year-old Reinhold Schmidt said he stumbled across a spaceship when his car stalled near the Platte River in Kearney, Neb. Schmidt said he was invited inside to chat with the humanoid occupants – four men and two women, who spoke both English and German.
The new book quotes a well-known contactee named Reinhold Schmidt who encountered an alien ship in Kearney, Nebraska, in 1957. After accepting the flying saucer captain’s invitation to come onboard, Schmidt heard the captain and crew speaking to one another in “High German,” a dialect that Schmidt had been versed in by his parents from his youth up. Apparently unaware that Schmidt could understand them, the beings spoke to him with their Deutsche accents intact and made no effort to disguise their voices.
The 1961 abduction of New Hampshire couple Betty and Barney Hill is much better known than Schmidt’s, but, when studying their case, there is an often overlooked moment when Barney, as he undergoes regressive hypnosis with post-trauma specialist Dr. Benjamin Simon, begins to panic when one of his alien abductors takes on the appearance of a Nazi in full uniform. Was this a glimpse into the aliens’ “true” agenda? As an African-American in the early 1960s, Barney was certainly familiar with the oppressive fears that come from being a victim of racism. Did his unconscious mind somehow conjure the Nazi image as an expression of those fears? Or was it intended as a grim warning of future totalitarian domination?
George Adamski
The Nazis also cast a shadow over even the beginnings of the contactee movement in the 1950s. Many people will be familiar with the 1952 meeting between George Adamski and the androgynous, blond-haired, blue-eyed Aryan Space Brother who called himself Orthon. But one may not know that that first contact in the California desert was facilitated by Adamski’s associate, George Hunt Williamson, who worked out the time and location for the landing in the days before it took place by using an Ouija board to communicate with the Space Brothers. Williamson was himself associated with right wing extremist William Dudley Pelley, an American Nazi-sympathizer who had served time in jail for sedition and anti-government rabblerousing. While Williamson would later disavow that he held any racist beliefs at the time, he did serve in Pelley’s employ writing and editing pro-fascist pamphlets and magazines.

Admittedly, no one wants to give up the utopian hopes that accompany belief in the Space Brothers. But the fact that their physical appearance embodied the ideal of Aryan or Nordic “good looks” is not an easy one to ignore. In the case of the desert encounter between Adamski and Orthon, we have this to consider as well: the new book “Nazi UFO Time Travelers” offers a line drawing based on a plaster-of-Paris cast – taken at the site of the meeting – of the boot print of Orthon. One can easily discern a pair of swastikas engraved into the sole of the alien’s boot, leading one to consider the possibility that the visiting alien followed “on the heels,” so to speak, of the Nazis defeated some short few years before.
I think at this point we now have a clearer idea of just what Beckley is aiming for in “Nazi UFO Time Travelers.” When one combines these seemingly disparate events with one another, they coalesce into a picture of the possible: Aryan aliens who matched their advanced knowledge and technology with willing scientists bent on controlling the world, a kind of fifty-fifty split between extraterrestrial and human efforts that resulted in the flying saucer phenomenon as we know it today.
But there is still more. One of the most generally agreed upon historical aspects of the Nazis/UFO theory concerns an aircraft called “Die Glocke,” which is German for “The Bell.” It was believed to be a product of both alien guidance and the work of topflight scientists like the aforementioned von Braun and Oberth.
A mock-up of this purported airship is featured on the cover of “Nazi UFO Time Travelers,” and it is indeed a bell-shaped aircraft, although what kind of propulsion system could enable such an ungainly monstrosity to fly at mind-bending speeds remains unknown. The Bell is also said to contain the time travel apparatus that is so essential to the story, but which remains an even deeper mystery than what kind of fuel propelled it through the skies. Some contend that the propulsion system is based either in the long sought after antigravity energy or some manipulation of electronic principles which can be tapped into throughout the universe.
According to witnesses, the object that crashed near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania was acorn shaped, much like the descriptions of the Nazi Bell.
In 1965, in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania, numerous witnesses saw an unknown object crash in the woods outside town. Locals reported that some kind of government/military cleanup crew was on the scene nearly immediately, which indicates that the federal interlopers had been following the craft’s descent on radar. The witnesses say the object was put on the back of a flatbed truck under some kind of tarp covering and hurriedly hauled away. But it was still possible to discern that the clandestine cargo was a large, acorn-shaped object that could easily be said to have resembled the contours of the Nazis’ Bell. In fact, the similarity is so remarkable that one hesitates to conclude that it’s all a simple coincidence.
“Nazi UFO Time Travelers” also features a pair of chapters by Tim R. Swartz, who writes about a tangled trail of conspiracy and secrecy that involves pioneering inventor Nikola Tesla’s research being commandeered by Nazi spies in their desperate quest to develop weapons for defeating the Allies. Swartz also contributes several anecdotal accounts of ordinary people who have experienced time distortion, missing time and other similar anomalies while within close proximity to a UFO. Time does more than stand still at such moments, and Swartz gives some needed insight into how ordinary, non-Nazi witnesses also encounter a kind of time that dances outside our normal understanding.
Brian Allan
Brian Allan, a Scotsman of longstanding fame in the world of the paranormal, provides an introduction into the many elements of the Nazi/flying saucer theory that are essential to the reader’s understanding, a kind of primer in the basics. Allan’s writing is both caustic and amusing, which is treading a fine line when it comes to this kind of analysis of this heavy, some would say “grim,” subject.
So, with “Nazi UFO Time Travelers: Do We Owe The Future To The Fuhrer?,” a certain amount of license must be granted to the authors. While most UFO believers quite understandably like to ignore the links between flying saucers, alien abduction, Germanic origin stories and Nazi technology rumors, Beckley and his crew prefer to look these nightmarish ideas in the eye and report on them as objectively as possible.
Have we assembled a book of “inconvenient truths,” to paraphrase environmental activist and former vice-president Al Gore? It might be more accurate to say “frightening possibilities,” and then to commence praying for deliverance from a future world of high-tech Nazis leering at us from some beer garden around the next corner in time.

In andere werelden hebben we mogelijk nog meer schade veroorzaakt dan hier.
Close encounters zoals die bij Roswell vinden voornamelijk plaats in de buurt van onze kerninstallaties, zegt de commentaarstem.
Dat suggereert dat deze wezens erg bezorgd zijn over onze vijandigheid en de existentiële bedreiging die wij voor onszelf en voor anderen vormen.

De afgelopen jaren zijn er overal ter wereld mensen geweest die een spectaculair uitziende driehoekig object hebben zien vliegen.
Dit werd vaak geassocieerd met het geheime anti zwaartekracht toestel, de TR-3B, en terecht, want nu is door UFO onderzoekers de patentaanvraag van deze machine ontdekt.
Talloze meldingen zijn er de afgelopen jaren geweest van mensen die vreemde driehoekige objecten in de lucht hebben zien hangen of vliegen en die zich afvroegen of ze hier te maken hadden met een buitenaardse UFO.
Tot op de dag van vandaag gaan de meldingen door, zoals die van een maand geleden boven Exmouth in het Engelse graafschap East Devon.
Een Engelse buschauffeur neemt rond kwart voor tien ’s avonds even pauze en kijkt naar de lucht, waar hij iets vreemds ontdekt. En dat waren drie lichten in een driehoeksformatie die stil leken te hangen en als het ware om de eigen as ronddraaiden.
Hieronder volgt de opname die de man maakte en vooral zijn commentaar is heel interessant en toont aan hoezeer mensen onder de indruk zijn wanneer ze zoiets meemaken.
Hebben we hier te maken met een buitenaards of een experimenteel toestel van de Amerikaanse luchtmacht, zoals de TR3B?
Officiëel is er uiteraard weinig te weten te komen over dit toestel, maar op de website WijWordenWakker vonden wij de volgende uitleg:
Veel mensen verwarren dit vliegend object met een UFO, terwijl het dat niet is, wel zit er UFO technologie in verwerkt. Van de TR-3B wordt algemeen aangenomen dat het een product is van het "Aurora" zwart-project. Volgens verschillende bronnen is dit de top van de geheime projecten. Dit geheime project van de V.S. kost $ 3 miljard per object en onlangs zijn er 3 TR-3B Astra’s aan Israel verkocht.
De TR-3B is een nucleair aangedreven vliegende driehoek, in staat tot fenomenale snelheden. Het toestel kan door reactieve elektrische stimulatie van kleur en van uiterlijk veranderen en een andere vorm aannemen of onzichtbaar worden voor het menselijk oog. De TR-3B Astra bevat een plasmaveld versneller annex magnetisch veld verstoorder ('disruptor') , waardoor de massa van het toestel incl. inzittenden met 90% verkleind zou kunnen worden, zodat de zwaartekracht nauwelijks invloed heeft op de prestaties van het toestel.
Mede hierdoor zou de snelheid boven Mach 50 uit komen, ter vergelijking: de meeste gevechtsvliegtuigen hebben Mach 2. (Mach 1 is gelijk aan de snelheid van het geluid). Daarnaast zou de Astra uitgerust zijn met een deeltjesversneller/pulselasers, 'scalaire' wapens (waardoor de vijand zo verward wordt, dat men vrijwillig de wapens neerlegt) en tevens 40 neutronenbommen.
Maar, nu wordt het echt interessant, want de afgelopen dagen is er via een aantal UFO onderzoekers een patentregistratie naar voren gekomen uit 2004, wat in feite precies dit TR-3B anti zwaartekracht toestel beschrijft.
De samenvatting van de Amerikaanse patentaanvraag US 20060145019 A1 luidt als volgt:
A spacecraft having a triangular hull with vertical electrostatic line charges on each corner that produce a horizontal electric field parallel to the sides of the hull. This field, interacting with a plane wave emitted by antennas on the side of the hull, generates a force per volume combining both lift and propulsion.
Wie de hele aanvraag wil bekijken, kan dat hier doen. Het begint al vrij snel heel technisch te worden, maar wat hier wordt beschreven is een ruimtevaartuig zoals de TR-3B.
De aanvraag staat op naam van John St. Clair, op wiens naam nog talloze patenten zijn aangevraagd. Wie of wat John St. Clair is, is niet duidelijk, waarschijnlijk een pseudoniem voor het militair-industrieel complex.
Hierna twee video’s. De eerste waarin de maker uitlegt hoe ze aan dit patent gekomen zijn: Dit is gebeurd via een kijker van een eerdere video die ze maakten over dit onderwerp en die als tweede is geplaatst.
Is hiermee echt een mysterie opgelost of is er een andere verklaringen? Suggesties zijn welkom.
Voor een christen heet het het plotseling verdwijnen van de aarde, de opname, maar voor een niet gelovige lijkt het verdacht veel op een evacuatie met ruimteschepen.
NASA heeft een aantal telescopen in een baan in de ruimte waarvan de STEREO A en STEREO B de bekendsten zijn.
Deze maken vanuit verschillende posities opnames van de zon en op het volgende plaatje is te zien waar deze telescopen zich nu ongeveer bevinden ten opzichte van onze aarde en de zon.
Op 10 mei 2017 is er een bijzondere opname gemaakt met de STEREO B telescoop. Deze geeft ons dus een beeld van de achterkant van de zon; een gebied waar we normaal gesproken nooit zouden kunnen kijken.
Op die afbeelding staan een drietal enorme objecten.
Iets dichterbij zien we objecten die lijken op enorme ruimteschepen, waarbij op één een fel licht is waar te nemen aan het uiteinde van een soort uitsteeksel.
Een andere bekende ruimtetelescoop is de SOHO. Deze bevindt zich in een omloopbaan rond een fictief punt L, ergens halverwege de aarde en de zon, zoals te zien op de volgende afbeelding.
En ook op die telescoop is door de bekende Youtube gebruiker Streetcap1 een bijzondere ontdekking gedaan.
Ook daar enkele objecten die veel lijken op enorme ruimteschepen. Ook daar, bij één van die schepen, een soort uitsteeksel met aan het uiteinde iets wat misschien een kleiner schip zou kunnen zijn.
We hebben al eerder geschreven over een mogelijk verband tussen de vaker waargenomen enorme ruimteschepen bij de zon en de eindtijd zoals die in de bijbel wordt beschreven.
Velen herkennen de huidige tijd als kenmerkend voor deze eindtijd en voor christenen hoort daar de zogenaamde opname (rapture) bij. Voor hen zijn het geen ruimteschepen die hen komen halen, maar voor een niet gelovige vertoont het verhaal alle symptomen van een buitenaardse vloot die misschien klaarstaat om een deel van de wereldbevolking te evacueren voor de dingen die gaan komen.
Uiteraard blijft het allemaal speculeren, maar interessant is wel dat er wordt gesproken over een opname voordat het echt misgaat op aarde.
De opname van de gemeente is niet hetzelfde als Zijn wederkomst. Met de opname wordt de gemeente naar de hemel gebracht, zonder dat de Here Jezus op aarde neerdaalt. Als de Heer wederkomt zal iedereen Hem zien komen met de wolken. Dan zal Israël worden verlost van haar vijanden en zal Hij Zijn voeten op de Olijfberg zetten (Zach. 14:3,4). Het Koninkrijk van God zal dan op aarde gevestigd worden (Dan. 2:34,35; Zach. 14:8,9).
Door de opname wordt de gemeente bewaard voor de slotfase van de eindtijd, dat is de Grote Verdrukking.
Wederom, voor een niet gelovige klinkt dit als een evacuatie vanaf de aarde voordat er echte rampen zullen plaatsvinden.
De tijd zal het leren, maar dat het geen camera-afwijkingen zijn die worden waargenomen bij de zon, zoveel is duidelijk.

When it comes to plasma, the word alone invokes thoughts of sci-fi weaponry and space ships shooting out giant balls made of light and energy. What many do not know, however, is that plasma is actually a fourth state of matter alongside liquid, solid, and gas.
The term plasma comes from the Greek word from jelly and is interpreted as a moldable gas. What separates plasma from the previous states of matter, however, is that it never occurs naturally on the surface of the Earth, and must be created artificially by humans using various means of harnessing the plasma.
THE PLASMA ENGINE, NO LONGER SCI-FI?
While the process behind making plasma is enough for an article of its own, it is important to note that plasma is created by taking the electrons out of natural gas in a closed environment to create a reaction, like a neon tube sign. This is a very violate state of matter that is constantly trying to escape and dissipate into the atmosphere, so containment is necessary for some vacuum.
Now there has been a major breakthrough by a team from the Technical University of Berlin lead by Professor Berkant Goskel on a study into making plasma engines, and breakthrough that could change jet propulsion technology as we know it and revolutionize the aerospace industry overnight by creating an engine that runs solely off of air and electricity alone.
What makes these engines unique, is that unlike the normal large jet engine, the plasma genuine would be a series of smaller engines in an array made up of anywhere from 100 to 10,000 of these mini thrusters. The ramifications of an engine that runs purely on air and electricity are obvious and astounding; jet fuel would be a thing of the past and getting to the edge of space would require nothing but a constant supply of air and electricity.
For now, Berkant claims that the first generation of these engines will take aircraft to altitudes of 30 miles (or 50km) with the future being seemingly unlimited. Furthermore, Berkant states that the plasma jets will be able to be used at ground level as well to traverse speeds of up to 20 kilometers a second, something that would liquefy a person until we figure out how to handle the intense amount of g-force traveling at speed like that would create.
A normal jet engine burns fuel and compressed air, with the resulting pressure being forced out of the back of the engine create forward propulsion, a very simple concept that was mastered decades ago. The plasma engine, however, uses much more complicated technically in which it mimics the way a star or fusion reactor creates power.
By turning natural gas into plasma, then create an electromagnetic field around it electricity then is feed into the field, and forward thrust is created, that multiplied by up to 10,000 additional thrusters generating force is what will propel newly created aircraft through the sky if this engine is a success. Creating a public transport jet powered by these new plasma thrusters is exactly what Professor Berkant wishes to do.
There are, however, several problems that need to be overcome before the plasma jet engine will become a reality. First of all is the aforementioned issue where a full sized jetliner will be required to have about 10,000 of these thrusters to safely propel one through the sky which means that the size must be reduced, at the current size however they could use a thousand thrusters to power a smaller sized aircraft such as a private jet.
Secondly, these thrusters run off of electricity, a lot of it, which means there is a need for batters with a large storage capacity and transfer rate, that must also be lightweight enough to not significantly weigh down the aircraft.
So the final problem is the most significant one of them all, to generate that much power is impossible with current technology, and improvements in things such as solar electricity and compact fusion are the only solution. Still, at the rate technology is advancing these days, it isn't a stretch to imagine that ten years from now the technology jump in both electricity and plasma technology will have been enough to create the first real plasma propelled jetliner.

Three suspicious Russian satellites spring back into life after two years of dormancy.
International experts have expressed concern after Russia chose to re-activate some deeply suspicious satellites which are suspected of being powerful weapons after a period of two years of dormancy. These satellites are capable of operating in a military context in space which has led to some suspicion that the Kremlin are preparing for a space war.
The three satellites were launched between the years of 2013 and 2015 after Russia submitted a notification to the United Nations. While correct procedure was followed in the launching of the satellites, many nations became suspicious that the Russian government and military were not being entirely honest in the capabilities of these new satellites. Military intelligence in some western countries noticed that the satellites were capable of extraordinarily intricate maneuvers which led to the suggestion that the satellites were intended for use in combat or spying purposes. The suggestion caused such a furor that the Russian space agency chief Oleg Ostapenko was forced to call a press conference in 2014 to reassure the world’s media that the crafts were not ‘killer satellites’.
In 2015 the satellites appeared to go dormant and were not observed making maneuvers again. However, in March of this year, one of the satellites suddenly sprang back into life and was spotted passing within 1,183 meters of a now defunct Chinese weather satellite. Shortly after that, another one of the satellites was spotted moving and making maneuvers again.
It is believed that these three satellites can come within a few dozen feet of other satellites which means that they could be used to spy on, hijack or possibly even destroy foreign satellites. According to the Russian-born journalist and space historian Anatoly Zak, it is entirely possible that the satellites could be equipped with lasers or loaded with explosives which could make them an incredibly dangerous weapon if there was a space war.
Russia is not the only nation that appears to be preparing for this novel form of warfare. In recent years some countries including the United States, Sweden, Japan and China have all tested similar satellites.
Who is Australia’s Fox Mulder? Or in this case, who is Australia’s John Podesta? Social Services Minister Christian Porter — whose department is responsible for Australian government social services like mental health, families and children’s policy and support for careers for seniors and people with disabilities – wants to know why almost $6000 AUD (over $4400 US) of his department’s funds are going to a UFO Group. Are they all over 60?
The minister’s office has been advised that this group was previously funded under the Labor government in 2013 and that some of this grant goes to the transport costs of volunteers with a disability. However, the minister is somewhat surprised at the nature of this particular volunteer group being funded through this grant program and he has instructed his department to hold the transmission of funds pending a re-examination of the application.
Hold on a minute, says Social Services Minister Christian Porter
According to the group’s description on Yahoo, the Tuggerah Lakes UFO Group on the NSW Central Coast was formed in 2009 to “share experiences about UFOs, ET contact and information related to those subjects” with “monthly meetings, special guest speakers, movie days and BBQ & Nightwatches” to support – without discrimination – “a common goal of seeking more understanding about ETs and UFOs.” While not an official membership list, the group’s Facebook page is said to have 822 members.
The group’s substantial membership may be due to the large number of UFO sightings reported in the NSW’s Central Coast area, including the famous 1994 Gosford UFO incident when numerous witnesses reported a “huge ball-shaped object with bright lights on the bottom” sucking water from Brisbane Water, and police later claiming to have chased a “strange metallic craft” until it shot upward and disappeared.
Minister Porter isn’t buying it … nor paying for it either, at least not for now.
It’s very hard to unpack cause and effect; you tend to find a lot of sightings when you’re funding UFO sighting groups. But we’ll see what they’re all about. I’m sure they’re very nice people and there are lots of volunteers who are getting something out of it but looking at it from my perspective – representing taxpayers – it didn’t seem to me to pass a commonsense test.
Aren’t the Tuggerah Lakes UFO Group members taxpayers too? Aren’t they doing good work for their community? A spokesperson explained it to the Central Coast Gosford Express Advocate.
We have elderly people we pick up and take to meetings, where we need projectors and microphones so everyone can see and hear what’s going on. We also have outings out at night checking for unusual activity.
Given the opportunity, the members of the Tuggerah Lakes UFO Group could easily find other taxpayer-funded groups they don’t believe should be receiving their tax money. Unfortunately, the budget is limited and the needs are vast. A continuation of funding doesn’t look good for the Tuggerah Lakes UFO Group.
Then again, Social Services Minister Christian Porter might want to think twice about dealing with a group who quite possibly has connections with aliens who could easily modify their water-sucking equipment to inhale politicians.

Steven Macon Greer (June 28, 1955) is an American retired medical doctor and ufologist who founded the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) and The Disclosure Project, which seeks the disclosure of allegedly suppressed UFO information.
When it comes to theories on how life began on Earth, there’s quite a high degree of disagreement. Aside from the belief that some glowing bearded man or flying spaghetti monster blinked His eyes and made everything suddenly appear, many scientists are now looking into the panspermia hypothesis. This theory suggests that life came to Earth on a meteorite, asteroid, or other planetoid that crashed into our planet and seeded Earth with living organisms or at least the building blocks necessary for the evolution of organisms.
There are several variations of the panspermia theory, the most popular being lithopanspermia – the theory that the original organic molecules or organisms were embedded into meteorites which crashed into Earth.
Many microorganisms have indeed recently been found to be able to survive the harsh conditions of outer space for long periods of time, lending some credence to the panspermia theory. Of course, there are still other problems to address before this theory can be confirmed, but that’s where a new experiment suggested by NASA-funded scientists comes in. At the recent Breakthrough Discuss conference, several Breakthrough Starshot scientists discussed plans to send human DNA throughout the universe in hijacked bacteria to test the panspermia theory. You might know Breakthrough Starshot as the group planning to propel postage-stamp-sized spacecraft throughout the galaxy by shooting lasers at them.

At a panel titled “Scientific Goals and Instrumentation for a Flyby of the Nearest Stars,” Breakthrough Starshot developer Philip Lubin says that human DNA could fly to other worlds on such a craft and that his team already has NASA funding for their panspermia project:
A part of our program — at least on the NASA side, because we haven’t cleared this with Breakthrough yet — is actually to put organisms to sleep, in stasis mode. And there are certain organisms known as C. elegans, which we’re going to embed human DNA into and send them out and then awaken them on arrival. However, I expect that will be a highly controversial thing to do.
Uh, yeah. It will. NASA and other space agencies are very careful not to contaminate other worlds with Earth germs, going so far as to slam their spacecraft and satellites into other planet’s atmospheres in order to incinerate them once they’ve reached the end of their lifespans. By proposing to send our DNA throughout the cosmos, these scientists essentially want to play at being gods.
What could go wrong?
I find some serious problems with this suggestion. First of all, who are we to say that our DNA should propagate throughout the universe? Such an experiment could have completely unknown side-effects that could be disastrous for other worlds. Maybe our DNA will take hold and (over eons) create another race of beings which will wipe out the indigenous life on whatever piteous planet it lands on. Or, that DNA could just spend eternity hurtling through the cold, empty vacuum of space only to burn up in some alien world’s atmosphere. The point is we don’t know. Which means this experiment is probably better suited to the domain of science fiction.
Over the past couple of weeks I have been busily promoting my latest book, The Roswell UFO Conspiracy. Taking into consideration the fact that I dismiss the idea that aliens crashed outside of Roswell in the summer of 1947 (I go down the dark and disturbing “human experimentation” path), it’s not surprising that more than a few people within Ufology have taken me to task for daring to suggest that Ufology’s Sacred Cow is nothing of the sort. The same thing happened when I wrote my 2005 book, Body Snatchers in the Desert – the new book being the sequel to Body Snatchers. Back in 2005, some people screamed and ranted (I ranted back at them – I don’t do screams). Others complained that I was causing problems for Ufology. My reply: “So what?”
In light of all the above, I expected a near-identical response to the new book. This time around, however, things are a bit different. Far more people – twelve years after Body Snatchers provoked raised blood-pressures in Ufology – have been willing to give the “human experimentation” angle for Roswell serious consideration. And there is something else, too. It’s something which was also pretty much absent in 2005. Namely, ufologists turning on ufologists, all as a result of their attempts to try and keep the E.T. flag flying for Roswell. I’ll explain what I mean by that.
Several people in the “aliens crashed at Roswell and no other theory is acceptable” camp asked me how I could even consider Roswell as a non-UFO event. Two of them cited the many references to “alien bodies” found on the Foster Ranch, New Mexico in July 1947. In response, I pointed out – correctly – that in his latest book on the Roswell affair, titled Roswell in the 21st Century, Kevin Randle now dismisses most of the claims/sources relative to such extraterrestrial corpses. This provoked various messages and emails to me, suggesting that Kevin didn’t know what he was talking about, or that he had been “gotten to,” as one worded it. So, for the ranters, not only am I the enemy, but now Kevin – who certainly does not rule out the E.T.-angle – is the enemy too. Matters don’t end there.
In The Roswell UFO Conspiracy, I include a chapter on John keel’s research into Roswell and his theories of a Japanese connection to the case. This led one fairly well-known Ufologist to inform me that anything provided by “that half-baked demonologist” could be considered completely useless. Another said much the same, suggesting that Keel’s words on Roswell were not even worthy of comment. I also mentioned in the book how the late UFO researcher Leonard Stringfield had been given the “Japanese bodies” angle way back in 1991. Stringfield suddenly became the bad guy to one “I want to believe”-driven soul who phoned me out of the blue. Ironically, there was probably no bigger believer in crashed saucer tales than Stringfield!
Then, there are the notorious Majestic 12 documents. After my interview on Greg Bishop’s Radio Misterioso, I got an email from a guy in San Diego who said that I was talking nonsense. How did he know? Because the Majestic 12 documents state that aliens crashed at Roswell, that’s how. I pointed out that – thirty years after the initial batch of papers first surfaced publicly – very, very few people in Ufology now believe the documents to be the real deal. I gave a few names of those researchers who seriously doubted the papers (Kevin again, and several more) and yet again the attack went away from me and was directed at the pro-UFO Roswell research community.
On top of this issue of pro-Roswell/E.T. Ufologsist turning on pro-Roswell/E.T. Ufologist (all specifically in the name of keeping the case “alive”), I detect a sense of panic. A fear that perhaps aliens didn’t crash at Roswell, after all. A worry that all those years of work might be worthless. But, also a determination to try and avoid even having to deal with such an unthinkable possibility. Interesting times…

'Styrofoam' Planet Discovery Will Help Us Find Habitable Planets and Alien Life

Since the largest exoplanets are the easiest to spot and study, it makes sense that distant worlds with large "puffy" atmospheres would provide the best and most abundant information about the envelope of gases surrounding these faraway planets. But the challenge comes in finding planets with such large atmospheres.
Enter KELT-11b.
According to researchers at Lehigh University, KELT-11b has by far the largest atmospheric scale height of any ever studied, including our own solar system. Scale height describes the height at which an atmosphere "hugs" a planet, and while the scale height of Saturn's atmosphere is about 60 km (37 miles) and Earth’s is about 8 km (5 miles), KELT-11b's is a whopping 2,763 km (1,716 miles).
And the oddities of KELT-11b don't stop there. The planet itself is one of the most puffy and inflated planets in the known universe, with the density of a Styrofoam ball — the kind that students use to simulate planetary bodies in classroom presentations.
"It is highly inflated, so that while it's only a fifth as massive as Jupiter, it is nearly 40 percent larger, making it about as dense as Styrofoam, with an extraordinarily large atmosphere," said Joshua Pepper, astronomer and assistant professor of physics at Lehigh University, who led the study.
Pepper called KELT-11b an "extreme" version of a gas planet. It is orbiting very close to its host star, circling it in less than five days. The star, KELT-11, has started using up its nuclear fuel and is evolving into a red giant, so the planet will eventually be engulfed by its star and not survive the next hundred million years.
But this star is extremely bright — the brightest known transiting exoplanet host that can be seen from the southern hemisphere — and is the sixth brightest transit host to date. Such a bright star allows for precise measurements of the planet's atmosphere.
The team wrote in their paper that all "these attributes make the KELT-11 system a valuable target for follow-up and atmospheric characterization and it promises to become one of the benchmark systems for the study of inflated exoplanets."
Pepper also said that KELT-11b is "an excellent testbed for measuring the atmospheres of other planets," and that it will help astronomers develop the best tools to see the types of gases in atmospheres, specifically for assessing habitability or possible life on distant exoplanets.
"We don't know of any real Earth-like planets or stars for which we can measure their atmospheres, though we expect to discover more in future years," Pepper said. "These [giant gas] planets are the gold standards or testbeds for learning how to measure the atmospheres of planets."
Another unique aspect of this exoplanet is that it was found with the help of citizen scientists. In fact, 40 amateur scientists from 10 countries contributed directly to the discovery of KELT-11b and are listed as co-authors on the paper.
The KELT (Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope) survey uses two small robotic telescopes in Arizona and in South Africa. The telescopes scan the sky every night, measuring the brightness of about five million stars. Like the exoplanet-finding "champion," the Kepler space telescope, KELT looks for stars that seem to dim slightly at regular intervals, which can indicate a planet is orbiting that star and eclipsing it, called a transit.
But most of the planets found by Kepler orbit faint stars, making it difficult to measure the planets' properties precisely.
"The KELT project is specifically designed to discover a few scientifically valuable planets orbiting very bright stars, and KELT-11b is a prime example of that," Pepper said.
KELT specifically looks for gas giant planets orbiting bright stars, but the team didn't expect to find planets with such low mass and large sizes.
"We were very surprised by the amazingly low density of this planet," Pepper said. "It's extremely big for its mass. It's got a fifth of the mass of Jupiter but is puffed up into this really underdense planet."
They hope that further study of this world by the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes will provide additional information about the mechanism that causes inflated planets.
While exoplanet researchers are anticipating the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, both scheduled to launch in 2018, Pepper and his fellow researchers feel that small, ground-based telescopes still have a special niche to fill in exoplanet studies.
"Notably, the population of transiting planets discovered by the ground-based surveys tend to be large planets with short orbital periods orbiting bright stars," the team said in their paper. "These planets, unlike the vast majority of the Kepler planets, offer great potential for detailed characterization of the atmospheres of exoplanets. For that reason, the ongoing discoveries from ground-based transit surveys will continue to provide great value."

Met pijn in het hart nemen we in september afscheid van een ruimtesonde die ons beeld van Saturnus en zijn manen voorgoed veranderd heeft.
In oktober 1997 wordt ruimtesonde Cassini vanaf Cape Canaveral gelanceerd. Na een scheervlucht langs Venus, de aarde en Jupiter arriveert de sonde zeven jaar later – in 2004 – bij zijn eindbestemming: Saturnus. Inmiddels zijn we dertien jaar verder en cirkelt Cassini nog altijd rond de gasreus heen. Maar niet lang meer. Na een missie van bijna 20 jaar begint de brandstof van Cassini op te raken. En daarom krijgt deze in september opdracht om zich in de atmosfeer van Saturnus te boren. Een duik die de sonde al na korte tijd fataal zal worden. Met de snoekduik in de turbulente atmosfeer van Saturnus komt een einde aan een lange ruimtemissie die gekenmerkt wordt door grootse ontdekkingen. De tien belangrijkste hebben we voor je op een rij gezet.
1. De lovehandle van Iapetus Cassini heeft zich eigenlijk nog maar net in een baan rond Saturnus genesteld als deze tijdens een scheervlucht langs Saturnus’ maan Iapetus op een verrassing stuit. Ter hoogte van de evenaar blijkt de maan een flinke bergkam te bezitten. De richel is zo’n 20 kilometer breed en dertien kilometer hoog. Vervolgonderzoek wijst uit dat het gebergte (letterlijk!) uit de lucht is komen zetten. Waarschijnlijk is Iapetus in het verleden in botsing gekomen met een ander object waarbij een ring van puin rond de maan is ontstaan. En dat puin is uiteindelijk weer naar beneden komen zetten.

2. Huygens In 2005 slingert Cassini de Huygens-lander richting het oppervlak van Titan. En met succes: de lander overleeft de reis door de dikke atmosfeer en landt heelhuids op het oppervlak. Voor het eerst kunnen we dat oppervlak – dat anders schuilgaat onder de dikke, nevelige atmosfeer van Titan, van heel dichtbij bekijken. Het levert spectaculaire beelden op. Zo’n 72 minuten nadat Huygens op Titan is geland geeft deze de geest: de batterij is leeg.
3. Er is vloeibaar water op Enceladus! Een paar jaar na aankomst bij Saturnus doet Cassini misschien wel de belangrijkste ontdekking uit zijn carrière. De sonde fotografeert geisers op het oppervlak van Saturnus’ maan Enceladus. En het lijkt erop dat deze geisers vloeibaar water in de lucht spuiten. Wetenschappers zijn door het dolle heen. Want waar vloeibaar water is, is wellicht leven. Inmiddels weten we dat het water dat de geisers uitspugen afkomstig is uit een wereldwijde oceaan die onder de ijskorst van Enceladus schuilgaat. Of er in die oceaan daadwerkelijk leven te vinden is, is nog altijd onduidelijk. Maar hoe meer onderzoek er naar de maan gedaan wordt, hoe aannemelijker het lijkt te worden dat het een vrij prettige plek is voor aliens. Enkele weken geleden verscheen bijvoorbeeld nog een onderzoek dat aantoont dat Enceladus hydrothermale bronnen bezit die de ondergrondse oceaan verrijken met een potentiële energiebron voor leven.

4. Titan heeft meren! En een paar maanden later doet Cassini weer een grootse ontdekking. Op Saturnus’ maan Titan treft de ruimtesonde verschillende meren aan. Sommige zijn slechts 1 kilometer breed. Anderen meten wel 30 kilometer. In de meren vinden we geen water, maar vloeibaar methaan en ethaan. Naast meren heeft Titan trouwens ook heel aardige bergen: de hoogste blijken meer dan 3300 meter hoog te zijn. En de maan heeft diepe valleien die gevuld zijn met vloeibaar methaan.

5. En nog een maan..en nog één..en nog één Herhaaldelijk ontdekt Cassini tijdens zijn reisjes in de omgeving van Saturnus nieuwe manen. Methone en Pallene bijvoorbeeld. Maar ook de in Saturnus’ G-ring verstopte maan Aegaeon. Het laatstgenoemde hemellichaam is – met een gemiddelde straal van zo’n 300 meter – de kleinste maan die Saturnus rijk is.

6. Saturnus heeft meer ringen dan gedacht Naast manen heeft Cassini ook enkele nieuw ringen ontdekt rond Saturnus. De sonde spotte de ringen toen deze in de schaduw van Saturnus verbleef en de ringen in tegenlicht kon bestuderen. De ene ring is zo’n 2500 kilometer breed en bevindt zich tussen de E- en G-ring, in de baan van Pallene. De andere bevindt zich tussen de heldere hoofdringen en de G-ring, is zo’n 5000 kilometer breed en bevindt zich in de baan van de manen Janus en Epimetheus. Aangenomen wordt dat de ringen bestaan uit deeltjes die tijdens inslagen van het oppervlak van Janus, Epimetheus en Pallene zijn weggeslingerd. Dat die deeltjes zo’n mooie ring vormen, verbaast onderzoekers.
7. Storm verslikt zich..in zichzelf In 2010 en 2011 zien onderzoekers – via de ogen van Cassini – iets heel bijzonders gebeuren op Saturnus. In december 2010 ziet een enorme storm het levenslicht op de gasreus. Kort nadat de storm ontstaan is en richting het westen begint te bewegen, creëert deze een tegen de klok indraaiende vortex. De vortex beweegt veel langzamer dan de storm, waardoor een langgerekte monsterstorm ontstaat. Die storm wordt groter en groter en in het voorjaar van 2011 heeft deze zich – op 33 graden breedte – bijna helemaal rond Saturnus gewikkeld. In juni 2011 is het dan echt zover: de snel bewegende kop van de storm stuit op zijn veel trager bewegende staart. En daarop valt de storm stil. Het is voor het eerst dat onderzoekers er getuige van zijn dat een storm zichzelf op zo’n manier ‘consumeert’. “Zelfs de reusachtige stormen op Jupiter consumeren zichzelf niet zo, wat maar weer eens laat zien dat de natuur heel wat indrukwekkende variaties kent en ons keer op keer kan verrassen,” stelt onderzoeker Andrew Ingersoll daar in 2013 over.

8. Dione en Rhea hebben een atmosfeer In 2010 ontdekt Cassini dat maan Rhea een dunne atmosfeer heeft. De atmosfeer bevat zuurstof en koolstofdioxide. En een paar jaar later blijkt ook maan Dione een zuurstof bevattende atmosfeer te hebben. Ook Dione’s atmosfeer is maar dunnetjes. Maar het maakt de ontdekking niet minder interessant. “We weten nu dat Dione, net als de ringen van Saturnus en de maan Rhea een bron van zuurstofmoleculen is,” stelde onderzoeker Robert Tokar in 2012. “Het laat zien dat moleculaire zuurstof best veel voorkomt in het Saturnussysteem en versterkt het idee dat het kan voortkomen uit een proces waarin leven geen rol speelt.”

9. Magische eilanden Toch weer even terug naar Titan. Want daar ontdekt Cassini in 2014 iets heel bijzonders: magische eilanden. In Ligeia Mare – één van de grotere meren die Titan rijk is – ziet Cassini een 260 vierkante kilometer grote vlek verschijnen en weer verdwijnen. Tot op de dag van vandaag is onduidelijk wat het precies is geweest. Golven? Drijvende vaste stoffen? Of bubbels misschien?

10. Bergen op de ringen van Saturnus Wie denkt dat de ringen van Saturnus plat zijn, heeft het mis. Cassini onthulde dat de ringen ook verticale structuren kennen. Op de foto hieronder zie je ze aan de rand van de B-ring. Ze torenen tot wel 2,5 kilometer boven het ringvlak uit. De structuren ontstaan mogelijk door toedoen van kleine maantjes (tot 1 kilometer groot) die het ringmateriaal omhoog dwingen.

Het is zomaar een greep uit het veelbewogen werkzame leven van Cassini. En stiekem hopen we natuurlijk dat daar de komende maanden nog wat hoogtepuntjes bij komen. Dat zou niet heel verwonderlijk zijn, want de sonde duikt momenteel herhaaldelijk in het gat tussen Saturnus en de ringen. En dat is onontgonnen gebied en levert hoogstwaarschijnlijk behalve spectaculaire beelden ook spectaculaire inzichten over Saturnus en zijn ringen en manen op.

Astronomers scramble to probe 'alien megastructure' star

Astronomers are scrambling to point their telescopes at one of the weirdest stars ever observed after it mysteriously dimmed again.
KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby's Star, has been monitored for several years after it was noticed that its brightness changed significantly and at irregular intervals.
A range of theories have been put forward for this strange behaviour, including one hypothesis which suggests an alien megastructure may have been built around the star to harvest its energy.
Although the star was first discovered in the 1890s, it was not until observations between 2009 and 2013 when scientists first noticed something particularly odd about it.
It was subsequently named after Louisiana-based astronomer Tabetha Boyajian, who wrote a paper about its strange behaviour.
Professor Boyajian noticed that at one point Tabby's Star's brightness had dropped by 22%, which can not be explained by any properly understood phenomenon.

Last month scientists noticed what appeared to be another slight dimming of the star - but that accelerated significantly on Friday, causing a scramble for additional observations.
Jason Wright, associate professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, told a web chat: "One of the difficulties here is that most telescopes are scheduled weeks, months in advance.
"We can't just jump on a telescope and take a spectrum typically. So we need to have a network of people around the world."
Tabby's Star is in the constellation Cygnus and is approximately 1,275 light years from Earth.
Scientists hope they might be able to work out what is causing the star to dim by analysing its full spectrum of light. But to do this, they need to know when that dimming is going to occur.
Astronomers do not believe it is being caused by a planet passing in front the star as this would not cause such a significant change in brightness, and it would be more predictable.
A number of other theories have been put forward. One suggests there may be a large cloud of dust and debris around the star.
Another suggestion is that it is recovering having been hit by a planet and a third theory suggests a swarm of comets may be responsible.
The most unusual suggestion - but one which scientists can not yet dismiss - is that an alien megastructure has been built around the star to harvest its energy.
The concept, which sounds like it comes straight out of science fiction, is actually referred to as as Dyson Sphere.
It is named after British-born scientist Freeman Dyson who, in the 1960s, hypothesised that advance civilisations would seek to power their worlds in this way.

An alien-infested space station isn’t the best place to question your life’s purpose. As Morgan Yu learns in Prey, the existential struggle is just as real as the deadly creatures lurking in the shadows.
Arkane Studios faced similar questions about identity (but with much less bloodshed) while making its sci-fi thriller. Out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, Prey is an action role-playing game where you have to fight an alien species known as the Typhon. It’s a premise we often see in pop culture, let alone in games. What makes Prey stand out is the story behind its development, where an unproven team resurrected a dormant franchise in a genre that’s difficult to master.
Arkane’s game is a reboot of the original Prey, a story-driven first-person shooter that Human Head Studios released in 2006. That company was working on a promising sequel until publisher Bethesda Softworks killed the project in 2014. Then after years of rumors, Prey resurfaced at last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo tradeshow, where Bethesda unveiled a much different takeon the franchise.
But aside from the name, Arkane’s game doesn’t share anything with Human Head’s sci-fi universe. According to lead designer Ricardo Bare, the core idea for Prey had been percolating at the studio ever since they finished the last of Dishonored’s add-on content in 2013.
“Even before we had the name, we wanted to make a game like this: a game that takes place on a space station with aliens that has our signature Arkane-style game mechanics,” Bare said in an interview with GamesBeat. “The opportunity to use the name came afterwards.
“In fact, Arkane has made a game like this before. The first game that Arkane made was called Arx Fatalis, and it was structurally very similar to [2017] Prey. It was a fantasy game that took place underground in a dungeon. So we call the space station our ‘space dungeon’ now.”

The rise of Arkane Austin
Founded in 1999, Arkane consists of two teams: one group is in the headquarters in Lyon, France, and the other is in Austin, Texas. Bare, a veteran designer who previously worked at Ion Storm (Deus Ex) and Midway Games (Blacksite: Area 51), joined the U.S. branch in 2009. At the time, it only had a handful of people, including creative director Harvey Smith and Arkane founder Raphael Colantonio. It soon grew to around 20 employees.
But the majority of the company (more than 60 people) were in France. Both sides worked together on several games, with the developers frequently traveling back and forth between the two offices.
After Dishonored’s release in 2012, Arkane decided to split the team so it could work on multiple games at the same time. Lyon took charge of Dishonored 2, swelling in size to accommodate the sequel’s bigger ambitions and the arrival of the PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Austin underwent a similar transformation as it began working on the project that would later become Prey.

“On the Austin side, we started to incubate this new IP [intellectual property], this new game, as well as expand the team massively,” said Bare. “We switched consoles, we got a new game engine, a new IP, and a brand new team all in the same dev cycle, which is kind of ridiculous.”
Though the Lyon team helped out from time to time, Prey was very much Austin’s baby. The U.S. team grew to 70 people over the course of development, many of whom were new to the company. While this hasn’t created any rivalries between the studios — Bare said they’re incredibly supportive of each other — it did add some pressure for the newcomers, who felt like they had to prove themselves to the folks in Lyon.
“They wanted to impress their Lyon colleagues by doing a really good job. … They wanted to show that they can make a compelling and beautiful world as Dunwall from Dishonored,” Bare said. “I think they did.”
A believable sci-fi world
Prey’s Morgan Yu is a scientist who is also the main test subject of a mysterious experiment. When the Typhon break loose, it’s up to Morgan to stop them — but the character isn’t your typical space marine badass. One big difference is that Yu is Asian, a rarity among gun-toting heroes in big game releases.
Arkane Austin turned to a lot of science fiction for inspiration. The team studied Solaris, Moon, and other films that explore what it’s like to be alone in space. Bare also read old stories from sci-fi author Robert Heinlein, such as “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress.”
“Me and some people on the team also just did a lot of actual scientific reading. Even though the game gets wild … we tried to at least start it at a place that was very grounded,” said Bare.
“So we did a lot of reading about neuroscience — learned a lot about the brain [laughs], which was super fun — a lot about the space technology industry. It’s really cool that we live in an age where this private space industry is happening.”

Prey’s version of 2035 imagines what someone like SpaceX founder Elon Musk would’ve done had he started his ambitions earlier in history. In this alternate timeline, the Cold War space race led to the discovery of the Typhon and the construction of a large space station to contain it. Later, a powerful company called the TranStar Corporation takes over and transforms the vessel into the skyscraper-sized Talos I.
Another example of Prey’s grounded roots is the Neuromod, a tool that you use to learn the Typhon’s powers and enhance your human abilities (such as hacking computers or repairing equipment) by altering the chemistry of your brain. It’s loosely based on real-world experiments where scientists can manipulate neurons by making them sensitive to light.
But instead of lasers, Prey’s device uses needles. Big ones. To unlock the upgrades, you have to stick the Neuromod’s needles into your eyeball.

Like Dishonored, Prey encourages you to experiment with your weapons and powers. You can use the Typhon’s Mimic Matter — which transforms you into everyday objects — to possess one of the space station’s automated gun turrets or to hide from the aliens. With Lift Field, you can either launch your enemies high into the air or use it to propel yourself to hard-to-reach places.
The powers you collect can have consequences outside of combat as well. The turrets, for example, can be a valuable ally because they automatically target any aliens around them. But if you harvest too much Typhon DNA, they’ll turn on you. The other human survivors on Talos I will also react to you differently.
However, you can avoid that by simply not learning any of the alien abilities. It’s possible to finish the game without them.
Lessons from Dishonored
The mix of Typhon powers, tools, and conventional weapons offer a degree of freedom and flexibility that isn’t seen in many games. But that’s not a signature of Arkane’s treatment of Prey. These complex and unscripted interactions are an intrinsic part of immersive sims, which first emerged with PC classics like Ultima Underworld, Thief, and System Shock. The seminal System Shock series from Looking Glass Studios was a huge inspiration for Prey in terms of creating a tense sci-fi setting.
Though Arkane tried to make other types of games before, it keeps coming back to immersive sims. Everything in its catalog, from Arx Fatalis to Prey, have detailed worlds with interlocking mechanics that leave room for the player to improvise. The studio most recently demonstrated this with Dishonored and its sequel.
One of the lessons the Austin team learned from working on that series is the importance of easing players into these digital playgrounds, especially for those who haven’t tried an immersive sim before.

“Unless the game invites players to do so, it’s not always obvious that [for example] you don’t have to find the key to this door,” said Bare. “You can look around and find an alternate way, or you could hack the door. Maybe you could blow the door up. I think lots of other games train players [to think], ‘There’s only one solution to this problem. And you have to try to discover what the designer had in mind.’
“Whereas we’re like, ‘No, there isn’t one solution. You can improvise a solution to this.’ You might be able to come up with something we don’t even know about because of all the systems interacting together. Part of the challenge is letting players know that it’s possible. That was challenging on Dishonored. And it’s still challenging on Prey. But we learned we have to present [those possibilities] to the player very early on.”
Yet Arkane didn’t want to overwhelm players with too much information. So the developers decided that for the first few hours, you’ll only have access to your human abilities. Eventually, the story introduces more nuanced tools like the Neuromods and the Psychoscope (a device that scans the different Typhon enemies for their powers and weaknesses).

However, planning for what abilities a player might combine in any given situation (and thus rewarding them for their curiosity when it works) is an impossible task. The best Arkane can do is just spend a lot of time playing through the game to identify any interesting combos it should support.
“And the things that don’t [seem cool], we cut and get rid of,” explained Bare. “You know you’re in a good place when different people on the team are arguing about things like, ‘This power is the best!’ and ‘This other power is useless!’ And the other person is saying the opposite. … That means different people are finding different ways to play.”
Ideally, the goal is to make players feel like the only limit is their imagination.
“The best feeling is feeling like you’re playing a game where anything is possible, even if it isn’t literally true,” said Bare.

Creating a ‘sublime experience’
If you look through forum threads or YouTube videos about Prey, it’s clear some fans still mourn the loss of Human Head’s Prey 2. That put Arkane in an awkward place when it came to managing people’s expectations for the game.
“It’s tricky because, admittedly, the original Prey was a really interesting game. And the pitch and demo of [Prey 2] was cool, too,” said Bare.
But the designer reminded GamesBeat that the company really only makes one type of game: immersive sims. That specialization is one of the reasons he joined Arkane in the first place. It’s a genre few developers try to tackle.
“For one thing, [immersive sims] are really hard to make because they’re so complicated. But they’re also super rewarding, and they ask a lot of players,” said Bare. “If you’re playing a linear shooter where your instructions are just to keep moving forward and shoot everything that moves, that game doesn’t ask a lot of you, right? It doesn’t demand a lot of the player.
“But playing a game like Dishonored or Prey is a little bit like playing a musical instrument. The game asks a lot of you, but it also rewards you tremendously, more than the other kind of game that I’m talking about.”

From Arkane’s point of view, these types of games always have at least two things in common.
“They always have a strong sense of place — that’s where the ‘immersive’ part comes in the word immersive sim,” Bare added. “They always feel like a very cohesive, well-built world where you can look around and deduce the story of the place and [figure out] what happened. Everything has depth.
“It’s like an iceberg: You see the tip, but you know there’s so much more below the surface in terms of world-building. You believe that you’re in a real place. And the second part is those layered, super-rich game mechanics, which just translate to the player feeling like, ‘I can do anything in this world. There are these rules and systems, and I can understand them and make a plan. And when it works, I feel this magical, almost sublime experience.’”
The new Prey can never live up to the promise of the cancelled Prey 2. Instead, Arkane is carving a new identity for the beleaguered franchise (whose origins actually stretch back to 1995), one that builds on the beloved immersive sims that came before it. If the reboot is successful, it’ll further cement the studio as a top-tier developer — and maybe even give the Austin team something to brag about to the Lyon office.
As for why they chose to use the Prey name, Bare said the reason was simple: It’s a great title for a video game, and “naming video games is hard.”

The star often called the most mysterious in the galaxy has begun darkening again. Scientists are now rushing to watch the event with as many telescopes as they can muster to attempt to understand what is causing its bewildering fluctuations of light.
The star, called KIC 8462852 and nicknamed “Tabby's Star” after Yale University astronomer Tabetha “Tabby” Boyajian, first made news in 2015 when researchers discovered something odd about its light, whose strange brightenings and dimmings have even caused some to speculate it might host alien megastructures around it. The star is an otherwise-normal F type star—slightly larger and hotter than our sun—located about 1,480 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Cygnus, the Swan. When astronomer Boyajian and her colleagues analyzed data from NASA's Kepler space telescope, however, they found dozens of strange instances of KIC 8462852 darkening up to 22 percent.
These dimming events are far too substantial to be caused by planets crossing the face of the star, so scientists looked for other explanations. Some have even suggested that it might host signs of intelligent alien life—specifically, a Dyson sphere, a hypothetical megastructure built around a star to capture as much of its energy as possible to power an advanced civilization.
In order to solve this mystery astronomers have been planning to analyze the full spectrum of light from Tabby's Star as it darkens via spectral measurements that split light into its constituent wavelengths. Because different materials absorb different wavelengths of light, spectra from the star could reveal what is causing its light fluctuations. “We’ve been waiting to catch another dip in light,” Jason Wright, an astronomer at The Pennsylvania State University, said in an online chat May 19.
Now scientists have discovered Tabby's Star is dimming again, and are racing to get as many telescopes as they can to watch it in as many wavelengths of light as possible, Wright said. “All week there's been some indication that something might be up,” he said. “Sure enough, at about 4 A.M. this morning [Pacific time], I got a phone call from Tabby [Boyajian] saying that Fairborn Observatory in Arizona had confirmed the star as 3 percent dimmer than it normally is. That's enough to say that it’s absolutely no statistical fluke, and we’ve now confirmed it with multiple observatories.”
Astronomers have proposed several possible reason’s for Tabby’s Star’s strange behavior, and each would create a different spectral signature. If clouds of dust are causing the dimming, they usually absorb bluer wavelengths of light, making stars look redder whereas comets passing close to a star would heat up and emit infrared light, Wright said. If interstellar clouds of gas are responsible, those are usually rich in sodium, hydrogen and calcium. And if the dimming is a phenomenon intrinsic to Tabby's Star itself, the spectra will show no signs that anything is absorbing the star's light. If an alien megastructure is the cause, it is difficult to predict what it might look like—if it is solid, “we might see the star getting dimmer overall,” Wright said.
In 2015 Boyajian and her colleagues predicted a dimming event might happen in May 2017. Based on the Kepler data, they suggested dimming of Tabby's Star might follow a roughly 750-day cycle. “It’s right on schedule,” Wright said. Boyajian herself demurred as to the accuracy of the estimate, noting “the prediction was a long shot—we cast a net of several hundred days.”
Among the telescopes Wright said researchers now hope to use to catch this dimming event in the act:
—The Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope
—The Automated Planet Finder at Lick Observatory near San Jose, Calif., a robotic optical telescope
—Both telescopes at the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, which operate in optical and near-infrared wavelengths
—The MMT Observatory in Arizona, an optical telescope
—NASA's Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Mission, which operates in gamma ray, x-ray, ultraviolet and optical wavelengths
‑Las Cumbres Observatory, a worldwide network of robotic optical telescopes
—Fairborn Observatory in Arizona, which operates in optical wavelengths
—The Large Binocular Telescope in Arizona, which operates in optical and near-infrared wavelengths
—The Hobby–Eberly Telescope in Texas, an optical telescope
“Our plan is to observe the star in as many wavelengths as we can,” Wright said. “This could be the weekend that we take the data that solves the puzzle.” Even more telescopes may also join in. “It's been a crazy 18 hours, and it’s going to be a really exciting weekend,” he said.
It remains unknown how long this dimming might last. “Most dips in the Kepler data take two to seven days,” Wright said. “So if this is a deep dip, it might be going on for a week. If it’s a shallow dip, it could be gone soon. Hopefully it’s a deep dip.” The data from Kepler does suggest such dimming events happen in clusters.

Scientists have discovered a mysterious ‘Cold Spot’ in space that could prove our universe is just one of an endless string of realities.
The Cold Spot is an area of space 13 billion-years-old and 1.8 billion light years across, which is 0.00015 degrees Celsius (0.00027 degrees Fahrenheit) colder than its surroundings – and this unfathomable mass ‘might be taken as the first evidence for the multiverse.’
Astronomers have been unable to explain the cause of this massive supervoid – and a new study conducted by Durham University claims it couldn’t possibly exist at all.

The co-author of the study, Professor Tom Shanks said:
We can’t entirely rule out that the Spot is caused by an unlikely fluctuation explained by the standard model [of particle physics]. But if that isn’t the answer, then there are more exotic explanations.
Perhaps the most exciting of these is that the Cold Spot was caused by a collision between our universe and another bubble universe. If further, more detailed, analysis … proves this to be the case then the Cold Spot might be taken as the first evidence for the multiverse.

The new study suggests galaxies in the Cold Spot cluster around smaller voids that spread over the region like bubbles, and that there is only a two per cent chance that it formed randomly.
If Shanks’ assertions are true, the Cold Spot indicates that our cosmos contains an infinite number of parallel universes which, in turn, contain an infinite number of realities.

But this theory isn’t straight off the pages of sci-fi, as astronomy expert Dr Stuart Clarke wrote in the Guardian:
These uncountable realms sit side by side in higher dimensions that our senses are incapable of perceiving directly. Each alternate universe carries its own different version of reality.

Carl Sagan Knew UFOs Are Real, Confidant Reveals
But Sagan kept his viewpoint quiet to avoid losing academic funding
ZNN – Renowned astronomer and astrophysicist Dr. Carl Sagan revealed to Dr. J. Allen Hynek that he believed UFOs were real but avoided any public statements to prevent the loss of academic research funding. Sagan’s once powerful influence on mainstream science to play-down the reality of UFOs is now in question.
“My recollection is that Hynek said it was backstage of one of the many Johnny Carson Tonight shows Sagan did. He basically said [to Hynek] in 1984, ‘I know UFOs are real, but I would not risk my research [College] funding, as you do, to talk openly about them in public.’’ “
This startling revelation about Carl Sagan, one of this century’s most esteemed scientists and writers, has now been made public by Paola Leopizzi-Harris, a former associate of Dr. Allen J. Hynek who worked with him from 1980 to 1985.
Dr. J. Allen Hynek served as a civilian scientific consultant to the U.S. Air Force Project Blue Book from 1952 to1969, initially taking a very critical and skeptical position on anything related to the reality of UFOs. In one of his own reports he stated:
“I had started out as an outright ‘debunker,’ taking great joy in cracking what seemed at first to be puzzling cases. I was the arch-enemy of those ‘flying saucer groups and enthusiasts’ who very dearly wanted UFOs to be interplanetary.” Hynek, J. Allen. “The Hynek UFO Report”. Dell Publishing Co. 1977
After leaving Project Blue Book – the U.S. Air Force’s pseudo-investigatory public relations scheme on UFOs, Hynek later wrote:
“Now, however, documentation which puts the UFO- U.S. government controversy in quite a new light has become available. The [UFO] authors have made revealing use of documents released through the mechanism of the Freedom of Information Act and other data which have been made available to them… which show that the CIA and NSA protestations of innocence and lack of interest in UFOs are nothing short of prevarication.”
Hynek went on to say: “For the government to continue to maintain that UFOs are nonexistent in the face of the documents already released and of other cogent evidence presented in this book is puerile and in a sense an insult to the American people.”“The UFO Cover-Up.”(Fireside books, Simon & Schuster 1984)
Hynek’s credentials are indeed impressive, having consulted on the Stephen Spielberg movie Close Encounters. As well he presented a paper on UFOs at the UN in 1978. (All Experts)
Sagan’s link to UFOs and possibly to Dr. Hynek occurred in 1966 when Sagan was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee to Review Project Blue Book. This committee concluded that the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book had been lacking as a scientific study, and recommended a university-based project to give the UFO phenomenon closer scientific scrutiny.
In scientific circles much of Sagan’s notoriety came from debates conducted under the auspices of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 1969 he challenged J. Allen Hynek on whether investigations of unidentified flying objects should be considered serious. Hynek argued yes Sagan no. (NNDB)
Sagan was a prolific writer of some 20 books including Contact – eventually made into a movie staring Jodie Foster. Sagan also hosted the brilliantly crafted and highly popular series COSMOS: A Personal Voyage. In Episode 12: “Encyclopedia Galactica”, Sagan explored UFOs and alien abductions while also including ‘refutations’ on UFOs.
“As I understand what the committee would like from me, is a discussion of the likelihood of intelligent extraterrestrial life… clearly it is the hypothesis that unidentified objects are of extraterrestrial origin which the committee must have in mind. I’m delighted to tell about contemporary scientific thinking along these lines, but let me begin by saying that I do not think the evidence is at all persuasive, that UFO’s are of intelligent extraterrestrial origin…”
Sagan’s confidential conversation with Dr. Hynek in 1984 appears to not only contradict this statement to the House Committee in 1968, Sagan’s new found view – that UFOs were real – clearly did not play any role in Sagan’s later highly successful public work.
This revelation by Paola Leopizzi-Harris appears to raise serious scientific discrepancies concerning Sagan’s public verses private beliefs about the nature of UFOs and Extraterrestrial life.
It appears, therefore that Carl Sagan presumably embarked upon his many television appearances, consulting on major television and Hollywood feature productions as well as his own academic writing while professing one public scientific point of view, yet maintaining a significantly contradictory personal belief – “I know UFOs are real…” as told to Dr. J. Allen Hynek in 1984 according to Paola Leopizzi-Harris.
In later years Sagan also heavily promoted SETI – the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, which discounts UFOs as an ET reality – advancing the theory that listening for signals from deep space may help locate intelligent ET civilizations. [Ed.note – SETI officials were contacted by ZlandCommunications for a comment on this matter – however at the time of publication no response had yet been received.]
It is unknown how long Sagan held this personal view or when and what changed his mind – future disclosures may reveal this. That Sagan presented much of his finest and most popular work outside the context of his personal belief that UFOs were real remains a salient incongruity for a man of Sagan’s stature, obvious integrity and celebratory contributions to humanity and science.
One can only speculate upon why, during the period between Sagan’s initial statement in 1968 and all during his now legendary writings and media productions, Sagan continued to espouse critical views on the reality of UFOs. Why did his views change so dramatically? Did funding issues alone motivate him not to come forward publicly to declare his change-of-mind?
This revelation made to Paola Leopizzi-Harris by a well-respected scientific figure like Dr. J. Allen Hynek alters if not the magnificent quality of Sagan’s work but re-constructs his considerable scientific influence on the mainstream scientific theories about the universe, the intelligent nature of UFOs and Extraterrestrial life.
How will mainstream science respond knowing now that a corner stone of modern science and one of its most revered members is now recognized as to have conceded – UFOs are real?
Two conclusions emerge –
One of the 20th Century’s most renowned space gurus and scientific leaders, appears to have inadvertently shattered the prevailing notion among the scientific community and the so-called experts, that UFOs are fictitious and that issue is does not merit further study.
The second conclusion – short of full disclosure by government of the UFO/ET reality, this revelation most assuredly represents the most serious damage yet to the wall of secrecy and the truth embargo surrounding the Extraterrestrial presence so ardently maintained by government officials and bolstered by mainstream science.
Notably this information also comes at a time when Paul Hellyer, former Canadian Minister of National Defence has publicly admonished another pillar of mainstream science, Professor Stephen Hawking, for contributing to misinformation about advanced Extraterrestrial civilizations. Hellyer’s admonishment is timely. It puts all scientists on notice that ponderous changes to their entrenched belief about the universe and Extraterrestrial life are about to occur.
The Sagan story also arrives on the eve of the X-Conference 2010 – the largest annual American UFO/ET Disclosure event coordinated by Stephen G. Bassett Director of PRG – the Paradigm Research Group at the National Press Club in Washington DC, just down the street from the White House and a President that recognizes the need for grave global change.
When asked to comment PRG Director Stephen G. Bassett said,
“Carl Sagan and J. Allen Hynek perfectly represent the intellectual and political dilemma faced by the human race during the second half of the 20th century. Both helped to radically change our view of the world… Yet one must be profoundly wrong on the most important historical event in human history.”
Ironically, a cloistered conversation between to academicians behind the curtain – backstage on the set of the Johnny Carson Show in 1984 seems to have changed science and with it, the paradigm beliefs of an entire planet – we are not alone.
