UFO CLAIMS ON THE RISE AS SKY CLEARS, WEATHER WARMS UP
UFO CLAIMS ON THE RISE AS SKY CLEARS, WEATHER WARMS UP

It is currently peak season at the UFO hotline in the Netherlands. Reports of UFOs increase every year when the weather warms up and skies clear in the country.
"The days are long, people are outside a lot and then you always see a peak in the number of UFO sightings", Alex Griffioen, the manager of the hotline, said to NOS. "For the vast majority of these reports there is a very simple explanation, but for 1 in 100 there's really something crazy going on."
A video posted online showing a white light slowly pulling over Ouderkerk, turned out to be a plane, for example. Some others are harder to explain. Such as a video filmed above Arnhem that shows three flying objects. They seem to be balloons, gradually disappearing into the sky, until one suddenly makes a sharp turn and shoots left.
Since the hotline was established in 2011, over 5 thousand UFO sightings were reported. That comes down to about 70 per month. Most of the reports involve strange lights, like white or colored spheres, spots and stripes. Sometimes it involves an object moving in an unusual way. The sightings are all discussed on a forum.
"It's a pity that this subject is always placed in the fantasy corner, along with crop circles and chemtrials and such. We're just trying to look at it seriously. It's a phenomenon observed by pilots and other very reliable, sensible people", Griffioen said to NOS.
He also has some tips for anyone spotting a UFO in the future. "It's useful to download two aps that answer a lot of questions: Skywalk lets you see the position of stars and planets. Flightradar shows the planes that come over." Try to take a clear picture. And if you record a video, make sure you have a fixed reference point in the frame.
I cover over-the-horizon technology, aerospace and astronomy.
Nearly four decades after it was received, astronomers still can’t say with 100% certainty that the ‘Wow!’ signal was not an interstellar radio beacon from some far-flung extraterrestrial civilization. But the signal --- which got the Wow! moniker after an astronomer first scribbled those letters in the margins of the incoming data --- was never reacquired.
Even so, Bob Dixon, Ohio State University’s (SETI) Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence program director at the time, once told me that the signal had to have at least originated at distance beyond the Moon.
Credit: Terrence Dickinson via NASA
The Milky Way and the constellation of Sagittarius.
What is known is that the signal was received just after 11 PM local time on August 15, 1977, at OSU’s now defunct Big Ear Radio Observatory. Its position on the sky came from the direction of the star cluster M55 in the constellation of Sagittarius. Yet more importantly, it closely-matched the narrow emission line of hydrogen at 1420 megahertz , a radio-quiet spot long touted as a potential interstellar hailing frequency for E.T. civilizations. And at the time, it was also the strongest such SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) candidate signal ever seen.
“So, ‘Wow!’ was appropriate,” Dan Werthimer, chief scientist at the University of California at Berkeley’s SETI program, told me. But he says it would be more convincing if the signal had appeared one after another along the Big Ear’s two different radio observing beams.
That, says Werthimer, would be more of an indication that it was an artificial radio beacon from an interstellar point source. But we occasionally see Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) that's modulated in just the right way that makes it look like it is consistent with a distant point source, says Werthimer. But as he emphasizes, if the signal were really from E.T. and was in the telescope’s observing sights for at least a few minutes, the source of the signal should have moved from one beam into the other.
“It didn't,” said Werthimer. “So, I'm 99% confident that the signal the OSU guys saw was RFI.”
Still, there’s another possibility and that is that the signal did originate from beyond the moon, but was produced by two active comets orbiting within our solar system. That is, within the vicinity of the ‘Wow!’ signal’s position on the sky.
A 2015 paper published by The Washington Academy of Sciences proposed that during that summer of 1977, comets 266P/Christensen and P/2008 Y2 (Gibbs) “were transiting in the neighborhood of the Chi Sagittarii star group” and produced by a large hydrogen cloud around their nucleus. Because the frequency for the ‘Wow!’ signal fell close to the radio emission for hydrogen, the paper noted that these local cometary hydrogen clouds would be strong candidates as the signal’s source.
The comet hypothesis sounds somewhat plausible, but I still don’t buy it. If this cometary phenomena were at all statistically frequent, researchers would likely have picked up something similar over the last 50 years. And to my knowledge, this is the first time that anyone has argued that such narrowband emission is from a comet.
My personal best guess is that the signal was not RFI. But more likely, it was the product of some very distant or unusual and/or poorly-understood astrophysical phenomenon.
Credit: Wikipedia
That’s not to say that E.T. isn’t out there somewhere. But the likelihood that we would only receive a lone radio beacon, that’s never repeated and could never be reacquired, also seems implausible.
Most people can live with the fact that there may be no one out there. Some prefer the notion that we are the ultimate undiscovered country in a cosmos teeming with intelligent life. But few like the idea that we narrowly missed E.T.’s one-off phone call.
Werthimer, however, says either the ‘Wow!’ signal’s rise and fall in strength was actually intrinsic to the signal, in which case he says it would have to be RFI. Or if the signal were from a distant source, he says, then it would be constant in power and its rise and fall in strength would be due to Earth’s rotation.
Roswell Deputy Sheriff: 'I saw four dead aliens and 100ft flying saucer at UFO crash site'
Roswell Deputy Sheriff: 'I saw four dead aliens and 100ft flying saucer at UFO crash site'
A FORMER deputy sheriff claimed to have seen a "flying saucer" and "dead aliens" at an alleged UFO crash site in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, it has emerged.
The testimony of Charles H Forgus of Big Springs in Howard County, Texas, is the latest to surface from a person who claims an alien space craft, and not a top-secret US-launched balloon, came down in the desert around the town nearly 70 years ago.
Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since in July 1947 the military sensationally announced in a press release it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the desert nearby.
But the following day it retracted the statement, saying it was in fact a damaged US Air Force air balloon.
Witnesses later came forward to say there had been alien bodies within the "crashed craft", which along with the wreckage were then taken to a mysterious top-secret military base.
There have been claims and counter claims, including that the bodies were crash test dummies and it had been a top-secret balloon spying on the Russians.
All the confusion means it is one of the world's biggest conspiracy theories to this day.
He was interviewed, aged 81, in 1999, but the account appears to have lain buried until now, due to copyright issues according to Flying Disk Press publisher Phillip Mantle.
Mr Forgus claimed to have been driving with an unnamed sheriff on the night of the alleged crash in July 1947, from Texas to Roswell to pick up a prisoner, when details of the incident "came over on the police radio".
He was interviewed in 1999 by Los Angeles private investigator Deanna Bever, who was looking into Roswell, and another interviewer whose initials are only given as LR.
Dr Scott said in the book: "Unlike other eyewitness accounts where few people actually reported seeing bodies, this witness reported seeing the craft and the bodies in a crash that appeared significant enough to report."
He told of a perfectly round saucer being crashed in a canyon, after it appeared to have hit a "side wall".
What I seen of him looked just like the one we see on television, with big eyes.
Charles Forgus
"There was a big round thing in the canyon. It was about 100 feet across.
"They put that on a truck and hauled it away. They wouldn’t let us get very close to it either."
The testimony has met with doubters already.
In a blog post on website theufochronicles.com Roswell UFO expert Kevin Randle said: "Though Forgus didn’t know which branch of the service they were in, the US Army on their fatigues should have been a big clue.
GETTY
The 70th anniversary of the Roswell incident takes place this July.
"He was asked if there were lights on the craft and he said, 'No, they went out when it banged into the wall in the creek'
"Though I’m not sure how he would have known that the lights went out when it hit because he wasn’t there."
He said the crash site location described by Mr Forgus matched that given by the late Frank Kaufmann, whose account "has already been discredited."
Mr Randle wrote: "He said he could see the bodies, though he didn’t have a good description of them.
"He talked about the big eyes. He said 'Their eyes looked like the ones we see on television and the pictures of them.'
"But he was so far away, according to him, it is difficult to believe that he would have seen the eyes.
"The real clue is about having seen alien creatures on television.
"He just picked the most popular version of the aliens to describe."
Mr Randle claimed the roads surrounding the crash site would have been blocked so they would have been unable to even get there.
He added: "The other part of the story that fails is that they heard about this on the police radio, which seems unlikely, but even if that had been true, they wouldn’t have heard instructions on how to find the place.
"You can’t see it from the main roads, and the gravel and dirt roads into the area are quite rough and quite confusing.
"If you don’t know where you are going, you’d get lost. Without someone leading them in, or precise directions which wouldn’t have been broadcast, they would never have found their way to the crash site."
Asked what the author and Mr Mantle thought of the testimony, Mr Mantle said: "We remain open minded on the testimony documented bu Deputy Sheriff Forgus.
"We hope that by releasing this information now that others may be able to shed more light on it one way or the other."
The man then said he did not think humans could be alone in the universe.
He claimed JFK replied: "You're right young man, there is considerable knowledge as far as the being of UFOs and the ET phenomenon that we are aware of today."
Unacknowledged claims to expose years of coverups within the US government over the alleged truth of alien visitations of Earth being kept hidden from the public.
The film is directed by Michael Mazzola and follows conspiracy theorist Dr Steven Greer, who is a major player in the so-called disclosure movement, which is calling for an end to an alleged truth embargo which ensures the cover-up continues.
You're right young man, there is considerable knowledge as far as the being of UFOs and the ET phenomenon that we are aware of today."
JFK
The extensive documentary touches on the death of Marilyn Monroe, which it suggests was a murder coordinated by the CIA because of an alleged affair with JFK and claims she was about to blow the lid on UFOs based on pillow talk with the president.
In the film, Dr Greer produces an alleged top secret CIA memo written two days before the star was found dead on on August 5, 1962, in Brentwood, Los Angeles, California.
He claims it shows how she was wire tapped by the agency which had concerns about her liaison with the president.
Last year, a new theory alleged that JFK was shot dead because he demanded the release of top-secret UFO files from the CIA.
Alien researcher Scott C Waring, editor of the now defunct UFO Sightings Daily, posted copies to his website of a letter sent by JFK to the then head of the CIA just 10 days before he was murdered.
He blogged: "Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton doesn't know it yet, but she does not have the power to release such information.
"CIA would kill her before she could, just like they did JFK.
"Yes, just a week before his death JFK wrote a memo to CIA to release all pertinent info to NASA, but somehow he was killed before it ever happened."

'Unacknowledged'
After debuting on iTunes and digital platforms on May 9, 'Unacknowledged' shot to the No. 1 documentary spot worldwide.
For decades, Hollywood has pondered the age-old question: Are we alone in the universe? The Orchard’s new documentary Unacknowledged claims to have the answer.
Directed by Michael Mazzola and narrated by Breaking Bad’s Giancarlo Esposito, the film features the work of Dr. Steven Greer, founder of The Disclosure Project, and is dubbed an important expose revealing covert interstellar secrets (that’s right, Hillary Clinton and other high-level public servants know all about ET visitors, says Greer).
“There's no question in my mind that Hillary’s aware of the issue,” Greer says. “Her campaign chairperson John Podesta came out in favor of disclosure and said that the government should come forward with this information. And he remained a disclosure advocate all the way through the campaign. And [former] CIA Director James Woolsey first told me that he had made specific directed inquiries into the subject but was denied access.”
What might come as a shock is how well these documentaries do on digital platforms. After debuting on iTunes on May 9, Unacknowledged shot to the No. 1 documentary spot worldwide and No. 2 in the U.S. (second only to Laura Poitras’ Julian Assange pic Risk). In fact, Unacknowledged, which debuted on VOD on May 23, is outpacing Risk in its first few weeks, despite the latter’s high-profile subject, a Cannes 2016 debut and an Oscar-winning director (Poitras won the 2015 best documentary prize for Citizenfour).
Greer, a retired emergency room doctor, raised more than $700,000 through crowdfunding to finance the film and an accompanying book, published April 25 by A&M Publishing, but he still needed to find a distributor. Enter The Orchard, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment that entered the film distribution space just two-and-a-half years ago and already has an impressive track record with docs, having shepherded Life, Animated and Cartel Land to Oscar nominations in successive years. The company acquired Unacknowledged back in September 2016, with hopes of tapping into the rabid UFO fan base. The film features ET revelations from numerous government sources including Richard Doty, a former special agent for the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations and offers whistleblower testimony, documents and more UFO footage than an X-Files marathon.
Over the years, several Hollywood projects featuring Greer’s work fell apart “inexplicably,” he says, prompting him to put an unusual clause in his contract with The Orchard that if the movie wasn't released as planned, the rights would revert back to him. Among the projects he says were deep-sixed were a Fox film being developed by Arnold Kopelson (Seven) and an ABC News segment with Ira Rosen.
“What we did here was ensure that the truth about this issue could get to the public, and if there was any attempt to shelve it, we would call it back,” adds Greer.
Alas, Unacknowledged is out and doing brisk business since its debut. And given its success on streaming platforms, Greer once again has been approached by a few Hollywood producers that he declined to name about pursuing a narrative feature film based on his work. In the meantime, he and Mazzola say no one should be surprised that their film has found its audience.
"I think UFOs are totally underestimated in terms of the public interest in this,” says Mazzola. "Besides pornography it's probably the most searched topic on the Internet. And we're really excited to be the first UFO documentary to have a major distributor backing us."
A new alleged witness to the Roswell UFO crash will be revealed in book UFOs Today.
The testimony will be revealed in a new book, set to be published on Thursday, Express.co.uk can reveal.
The book, titled UFOs TODAY - 70 Years of Lies, Misinformation, and Government Cover-Up, has been penned by Dr Irena Scott, who gained a PhD in physiology from the University of Missouri.
Dr Scott said: "This book features the testimony of a former US Deputy Sheriff who was an alleged witness to the UFO crash at Roswell in 1947.
"This gentleman’s unique testimony will be published here for the first time."
FlyingDiskPress
The new book will be released on Thursday, June 1.
Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since in July 1947 the military sensationally announced in a press release it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the desert nearby.
But the following day it retracted the statement, saying it was in fact a damaged US Air Force air balloon.
Witnesses later came forward to say there had been alien bodies within the "crashed craft", which along with the wreckage were then taken to the mysterious top-secret Area 51 military base in Nevada.
It has gone on to become the biggest UFO conspiracy theory on record.
Phillip Mantle, of publisher Flying Disk Press, said: "The UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 is undoubtedly the most famous UFO event in the world.
"The new book by American academic Irena Scott PhD looks set to keep the debate surrounding this event moving.
"A new witness to the events near Roswell in 1947 is just a small part of this outstanding book.
This book features the testimony of a former US Deputy Sheriff who was an alleged witness to the UFO crash at Roswell in 1947.
Dr Irena Scott
"This unique books looks to answer these and many other questions."
The book also looks at Government official investigations into the UFO phenomena since before 1947.
Dr Scott, who claims to have witnessed a Government cover up over UFOS first hand, said: "Examination of government knowledge of the UFO phenomena is vital because it provides important evidence about whether the subject is taken seriously by government authorities, and can potentially provide technical information about the phenomena.
"The book also includes never-before-published first-hand interviews and correspondence with many of the most important and the initial investigators of the phenomena.
"This is significant because many of these people have died and those who are living are getting old.
"Thus, this research provides an historical record of the reasoning and opinions of those making an initial impact in this field."
Dr Scott went on to work for the Defence Intelligence Agency and the Aerospace Center in satellite photography.
She was also a volunteer astronomer at the Ohio State University Radio Observatory and has more than 30 years experience as a UFO field investigator with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).
Having written two articles this week on questionable and hoaxed UFO documents, I figured why not make it a “trilogy”? As with the previous articles – one on Marilyn Monroe and the other on the Rendlesham Forest UFO event of December 1980 – this one tells a very odd story. Back in 1978, Leonard Stringfield’s book, Situation Red: The UFO Siege, was published. It’s a book that includes a wealth of material on a wide variety of UFO cases – abductions, UFO crashes, radar-visual events, and much more. Also in the book, there’s a weird tale which revolves around the University of Chicago.
The story was told to Stringfield, in February 1975, by a UFO researcher named Sherman Larsen. Some months earlier, Larsen said to Stringfield, he was contacted by a Presbyterian minister from Wisconsin. The man had a strange tale to tell. He claimed that when he was a child his father – who was also a minister – took him to the Chicago-based Museum of Science and Industry. During the course of the day, father and son supposedly “strayed off into a labyrinth of corridors and became lost. Hoping to find an exit, they entered a room in which they encountered a large, glass-covered case.” Contained within the case were several, small bodies that were human-like but not human. According to Stringfield, “The minister recalled that instantly his father was grabbed by several men and forcibly taken into another room. Detained for some time, his father was forced to sign papers before they were allowed to leave the museum.”
It should be noted that within the world of Forteana (and particularly in Ufology) there are numerous tales of people wandering off when in government buildings and military installations, and going down the wrong corridor and stumbling on some terrible secret in a hidden room. The “Chicago story” may very well be just another variation on that theme. The late UFO researcher Todd Zechel took a particular interest in this story. In looking into it, he claimed to have found a connection between the strange bodies at the Chicago-based Museum of Science and Industry and certain events that supposedly occurred at the University of Chicago from the late 1940s to the early 1950s.
In 1979, Zechel quietly shared a controversial letter with Stringfield and several others, which seemed to confirm some of the tales of strange bodies in Chicago, years earlier. It was written on University of Chicago stationery and was dated May 5, 1979. The letter was supposedly written to Zechel by a professor at the university and reads as follows:
“I do not know the source of your information but after having assigned several graduate students to spend considerable time researching the University archives, I find that you are correct in your information about some very strange humanoid bodies being examined here in 1948 and again in 1952. The professors you named did indeed participate in the autopsies and studies but unfortunately, all three are deceased so we can obtain no further information from them. All results of the studies were apparently classified and removed from the university by government agents for whom the studies were performed. The only people my graduate students could locate that were even remotely connected with the studies said that they only remembered talk of four-foot-tall, sexless bodies thought to have been the product of Nazi cloning and genetic experiments and recovered from the ruins of German laboratories.”
Chicago Museum of Science and industry
When Stringfield took steps to have the doctor approached for comment on the controversial letter (and its beyond-dubious contents), the doctor replied: “The information that you have received is incorrect. As far as I know the basis for it is a letter under my name describing such a strange phenomenon. However, the letter is a forgery, the body of the letter having been inserted over a genuine letter and then xeroxed. I am somewhat concerned about this matter and would appreciate knowing where your information came from.”
If you ever come across a copy of the letter, the best thing you can do is throw it out with the garbage. That’s where it belongs.

Toshiki Kaifu, Prime Minister, Japan UFO Problem Is a Reality
First of all, I told a magazine this past January that, as an underdeveloped country with regards to the UFO problem, Japan had to take into account what should be done about the UFO question, and that we had to spend more time on these matters. In addition, I said that someone had to solve the UFO problem with far reaching vision at the same time. Secondly, I believe it is a reasonable time to take the UFO problem seriously as a reality.
I hope that this Symposium will contribute to peace on Earth from the point of view of outer space, and take the first step toward the international cooperation in the field of UFOs. Toshiki Kaifu, Prime Minister, Japan, in a letter to Mayor Shiotani of Hakui City, dated June 24, 1990, endorsing an upcoming Space & UFO Symposium.
Toshiki Kaifu is a Japanese politician who was the 76th and 77th Prime Minister of Japan from 1989 to 1991.
The recent election of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama of the Democratic Party of Japan was a political earthquake since the outgoing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has ruled the country for half a century. Although the main issue was the economy, the LDP was also run by uncharismatic and dull party leaders.
It now seems that Japan’s new first couple won’t be dull. The new first lady, 66-year old Miyuki Hatoyama, is a former actress, dancer and singer in the Takarazuka Revue all-female theater group, which has some rather eclectic New Age ideas and lifestyles. Japanese and international media went abuzz with Miyuki Hatoyama’s comments about her astral trip to Venus inside a UFO 20 years ago.
“While my body was sleeping, I think my spirit flew on a triangular-shaped UFO to Venus,” she wrote in the book Most Bizarre Things I’ve Encountered, adding that “it was an extremely beautiful place and was very green.”
Zecharia Sitchin Ancient Clay Tablets Describe Ancient Astronauts UFOs
A few years ago before his death on October 9, 2010, I had dinner with Zecharia Sitchin whose work was based on clay tablets some of oldest recorded writings known to man that were found in modern day Iraq (Samaria). Sitchin’s work consists of eight books promoting an explanation for human origins involving ancient astronauts. He explained to me that much of the ancient data is also contained in the Book of Genesis, which is the basis for many of the world’s religions including Christianity and Judaism. Basically it tells that God created the Earth and all living things. Visitors from space called the Nephilim came to Earth and mated with women. A great war occurred in the planet Heaven and a group of angels led by Satan were forced out and settled on Earth. Satan or the Devil attempts to convince mankind to follow his beliefs. The combatants are referred to in the Dead Sea Scrolls as the Sons of Light versus the Sons of Darkness. This war has continued for over 6,000 years.
We can assume the craft in our skies have a connection with these ancient writings. Genesis has more relevance to the present day than you might realize. There are two wills in the universe, God’s will and Satan’s will.
Genesis 19 is one of the most commonly cited passages in the Bible that describes the destruction of Sodom. The term “Sodomite” was originally used to refer to an inhabitant of Sodom — a city which was located in Canaan, present day Israel. It later became a legal term to refer to criminal sexual acts. God apparently had a fierce anger directed at the inhabitants of the town. He destroyed Sodom with fire and brimstone (sulfur) dumped from above. According to the story, he killed all of the inhabitants of Sodom for threatening the rape of two angels who blinded their attackers.
Over two decades ago, eminent scientist Jacques Vallee wrote a provocative book about UFO cases, folklore, and certain unexplained phenomena in Passport to Magonia, which changed our understanding of the UFO phenomenon by connecting documents and data from earlier centuries that related to incidents in the modern era. Among the numerous parallels between UFOs, folklore, and religious traditions were tales of fairies, elves, leprechauns, apparitions, and strange creatures.
In Celtic regions, witnesses described seeing fairies who were accompanied by strange oval objects from the sky, and these beings were also known for abducting people– not unlike modern reports of alien abduction, he pointed out. A ninth century account from the Archbishop of Lyon, France dealt with three people who were said to emerge from a flying ship– villagers thought they came from a magical land called Magonia. Investigators have neglected to recognize one important perspective of the phenomenon: the fact that beliefs identical to those held today have recurred throughout recorded history and under forms best adapted to the believer’s country, race, and social regime.
If we take a wide sample of this historical material, we find that it is organized around one central theme: visitation by an aerial people from one or more remote, legendary countries. The names and attributes vary, but the main idea clearly does not. Magonia, heaven, hell, – all such places have in common one characteristic: we are unable to reach them alive, except on very special occasions. Emissaries from these supernatural abodes come to earth, sometimes under human form and sometimes as monsters. They perform wonders. They serve man or fight him. Vallee spoke of how UFO phenomena seems to straddle different layers of reality, and what witnesses actually observe may be modulated by their individual consciousness. People in Asia view the phenomenon as part of nature, and the alien beings hailing from a different plane, rather than another planet, he added.
Philosophical and Other Problems with ET Messages
Many of the encounters with extraterrestrials appear to be friendly and even loving while others appear hateful and demonic. It appears we are dealing with various alien civilizations or hidden entities. Some may have been here for centuries while others may be recent arrivals with different motivations, Star Wars like encounters seem real with UFOs crashing periodically for the last seventy years. The damage to their craft appears to have been caused by advanced weapons. Either we have these weapons or the various ET civilizations are fighting one another. The Star Wars films may be closer to the truth than we realize.
There seems to be reports and research, components which parallel paranormal, psychic, and spiritistic manifestations, etc. Many UFO abductees, contactees and researchers, for instance, believe there is an interdimensional or multidimensional quality to the UFO phenomena and related experiences. Although the UFO phenomena may appear real enough, it also could be a holographic illusion or a transmogrification of matter and energy. Perhaps certain intelligences have the power to shape matter and spirit or to make our dreams so real, we believe they actually occurred.
Some UFOs and their occupants seem to have an ability to shape shift and appear and disappear.
Dr. J. Allen Hyneck suggested the phenomena appears to be more psychic than extra-terrestrial and perhaps comes from a parallel world. This also seems to be Dr. Jacque Vallee’s explanation who also notes that there are authoritarian overtones to some of the messages given to contactees i.e. Democracy is obsolete, elections should be done away with, racist ideologies are encouraged – some have more alien DNA etc., a New World Order is needed and will be set up with alien help. Once they are in charge there will be no more wars or crime. Vallee also believes that some kind of control system is being set up by the UFO phenomenon which challenges our traditions and human beliefs systems. Many abductees report implants and feel they are being manipulated for some unknown purpose that’s yet to be revealed. Much of the messages given to abductees and contactees seem to be New Age in philosophical orientation and language: there are no moral absolutes, reincarnation is taught, beliefs such as a vague “kinship with the Cosmos and it’s oneness with the Universe or the Universe as a supreme being” are common, we are being told that “we stand on the precipice of a quantum leap forward on both a biological and spiritual level.” Man is or is becoming God…etc. There are several alien types taking credit for the creation of man as outlined in the ancient Sumerian tablets.
Many alien prophesies to contactees of the 60’s or to-day have failed to come true or appear to be outright lies. Many contactees and abductees to-day are again delivering warnings of coming earth changes and disasters along with promises of help from aliens, So what are we dealing with? New Age aliens with a promise of a Golden Age or some unimaginable deception to enslave undiscerning minds. The evidence seems to point to the latter.
There have been many false messianic claims and those foolish enough to repeat history by following the voices of deceiving entities have been warned to “beware of false prophets and Christ’s who come disguised as sheep but underneath are ravenous wolves“.We should be reminded of the likes of Adolf Hitler who not long ago promised a New Age to unsuspecting Germans.
Whitley Strieber, in the MUFON Journal, states –
“I’ve come away from this experience convinced of one thing: if there aren’t demons out there, there might as well be, because these guys are indistinguishable from demons. Indistinguishable, to see them, to look into their eyes, is to be less – forever.”
Strieber seems to swing from horror to naive trust; you see this in his books and statements to the public. Perhaps, he is not so sure of the visitor’s intentions. The Reptilian aliens may be the same ones called demons or the devil by religion.
Some UFO researchers suggest that perhaps the so called ‘aliens’ aren’t much of a threat, after all if they have been around for this long and have not taken over then why should we be concerned. However, if they are not what they appear to be and the phenomena has other potentials and realities which include: deception, false messianic claims, dangerous ideologies, the formation of cults, etc., then for historical, social and political reasons we should not abandon our need for discernment and caution.
“Here are some great UFO quotes that shed light on the deceptive nature of the “alien” presence. But the UFO phenomenon simply does not behave like extraterrestrial visitors. It actually molds itself in order to fit a given culture.” John Ankerberg, The Facts on UFOs and Other Supernatural Phenomena, p. 10
‘We are dealing with a multidimensional paraphysical phenomenon which is largely indigenous to planet earth.” Brad Steiger, [cited in] Blue Book Files Released in Canadian UFO Report, Vol. 4, No. 4, 1977, p. 20
“We are part of a symbiotic relationship with something which disguises itself as an extra-terrestrial invasion so as not to alarm us.” Terrence McKenna [from a lecture]
“A large part of the available UFO literature is closely linked with mysticism and the metaphysical. It deals with subjects like mental telepathy, automatic writing and invisible entities as well as phenomena like poltergeist [ghost] manifestation and ‘possession.’ Many of the UFO reports now being published in the popular press recount alleged incidents that are strikingly similar to demonic on and psychic phenomena.” -Lynn E. Catoe, UFOs and Related Subjects: USGPO, 1969
“UFO behavior is more akin to magic than to physics as we know it the modern UFOnauts and the demons of past days are probably identical.” Dr. Pierre Guerin, FSR Vol. 25, No. 1, p. 13-14
“The UFO manifestations seem to be, by and large, merely minor variations of the age-old demonological phenomenon” John A. Keel, UFOs: Operation Trojan Horse, p. 299
“Human beings are under the control of a strange force that bends them in absurd ways, forcing them to play a role in a bizarre game of deception.” Dr. Jacques Vallee, Messengers of Deception, p. 20
“The ‘medical examination’ to which abductees are said to be subjected, often accompanied by sadistic sexual manipulation, is reminiscent of the medieval tales of encounters with demons. It makes no sense in a sophisticated or technical framework: Any intelligent being equipped with the scientific marvels that UFOs possess would be in a position to achieve any of these alleged scientific objectives in a shorter time and with fewer risks.” Dr. Jacques Vallee, Confrontations, p. 13
“The symbolic display seen by the abductees is identical to the type of initiation ritual or astral voyage that is imbedded in the occult traditions of every culture the structure of abduction stories is identical to that of occult initiation rituals the UFO beings of today belong to the same class of manifestation as the [occult] entities that were described in centuries past.” Dr. Jacques Vallee citing the extensive research of Bertrand Meheust in Confrontations, p. 146, 159-161
“[The occultist] is brought into intelligent communication with the spirits of the air, and can receive any knowledge which they possess, or any false impressions they choose to impart the demons seem permitted to do various wonders at their request.” -G.H. Pember, Earth’s Earliest Ages and Their Connection with Modern Spiritualism and Theosophy (1876), p. 254 Thanks to Noah’s Dove.
Space Aggressors’ Train US Forces for Extraterrestrial Conflict
Elite military units are specializing in mock space warfare, as Russia and China develop anti-satellite weaponry. By Greg Walters
In a large, tin-roofed warehouse near Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, members of a team of modern space warriors spend their days hatching plots to defeat the US military in extraterrestrial combat. They’re called Space Aggressors. Their job is to act like the enemy during mock space battles to help US units prepare for a conflict that may one day extend into the cosmos.
US Army Spc. Angel Mendoza, assigned as a space aggressor operator to the 527th Space Aggressor Squadron, Schreiver Air Force Base, Colorado., secures a helical antenna to a gravel pad adjacent to the flight line Aug. 8, 2016, during RED FLAG-Alaska (RF-A) 16-3, at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska. Along with two modems and an amplifier, space aggressors at RF-A 16-3 interrupt GPS systems for navigation and weapons, which pilots use during the exercise designed to simulate the first 10 combat sorties of a surge operation or conflict. | US Air Force/Staff Sgt. Shawn Nickel
“We play the bad guys,” said Captain Christopher Barnes, chief of training for the 26th Space Aggressor Squadron. “Our job is to not only understand the different types of threats and potential enemies, but also to be able to portray them and replicate them for the good guys, our Air Force.”
The 26th and 527th Space Aggressor Squadrons are headquartered in a two-story warehouse at Colorado’s Schriever Air Force Base, stocked with advanced radio and satellite equipment and nicknamed “the barn.” Behind the building, antenna dishes trace the sky. While attacks by the Space Aggressors are simulated, senior U.S. military and intelligence officials warn the threat in space is very real.
America relies heavily on space assets to project force around the globe, from launching missiles to directing warships across the seas. Indeed, the Global Positioning System, or GPS, is actually a group of 31 high-orbiting satellites owned by the US government and operated by the US Air Force.

Some worry that disrupting America’s vast network of satellites and ground-based systems could send US forces back to an antiquated era of targeting, communications, and navigation systems — deeply undercutting battlefield superiority.
This spring, rhetoric from US military officials about the need to bolster American defensive position, and even offensive capabilities, in space has ratcheted up amid concern that Russia and China are rapidly developing anti-satellite weapons.µ
“While we’re not at war in space, I don’t think we could say we’re exactly at peace, either,”
Vice Admiral Charles Richard, Deputy Commander of U.S. Strategic Command, known as Stratcom, told a conference in Washington DC in March. “We must prepare for a conflict that extends into space.”
His operational assignments include command of USS Parche (SSN 683) as well as Submarine NR-1, then the U.S. Navy’s only nuclear-powered, deep-submergence submarine. Richard previously served as the director, Undersea Warfare Division (N97) in Washington, D.C., and was responsible for the planning, programming and budgeting for acquisition, operational readiness and modernization of the submarine force and its support
In his remarks, Vice Admiral Richard pointed to press reports that “China is developing an arsenal of lasers, electro-magnetic rail guns, and high-powered microwave weapons to neutralize America’s intelligence, communications, and navigations satellites.”
The US military has now opened the National Space Defense Center. Thanks to www.space.com/tech-robot
New York Times Publishes Manchester Bombing Details
As a longtime reader of The Times, I was shocked, saddened and frankly confused by the decision to publish pictures of forensic evidence gathered by the British police from the scene of the bombing in Manchester. The release of any detail from a continuing counterterrorism investigation can have a harmful effect on that investigation. In particular, in a case in which it is suspected that the bomb maker is still at large, the forensic details could provide him or her with useful damage assessment information to “improve” the next device manufactured. Against this risk, it is unclear what public interest or informational need was served by publishing these pictures of the scene of an atrocity. I expect efforts to capitalize on sensational details from my country’s tabloids, but not from The Times. Andrew Gawthorpe Leiden, the Netherlands
“The alleged leaks coming out of government agencies are deeply troubling,” Mr. Trump said in a statement. “These leaks have been going on for a long time, and my administration will get to the bottom of this. The leaks of sensitive information pose a grave threat to our national security.”
Prime Minister Mrs. May’s statement followed expressions of outrage by top law enforcement officials after The New York Times published images on Wednesday of the shrapnel, backpack and battery used by Salman Abedi, the 22-year-old bomber who killed 22 people and injured scores outside the Manchester Arena as a pop concert ended Monday night. The Times did not disclose the source of its information.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council in Britain called the leaks a breach of trust, adding, “This damage is even greater when it involves unauthorized disclosure of potential evidence in the middle of a major counterterrorism investigation.” The disclosure of potential evidence “undermines our investigations and the confidence of victims, witnesses and their families,” it added.
On Thursday, Manchester’s top police official, Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, joined the chorus of criticism, saying that the disclosure “has caused much distress for families that are already suffering terribly with their loss.” Thanks to the NY Times
US Constitution Article III Section 3 — Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. The United Sates is at war with ISIS and I feel the major news media is giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.
Trouble in Europe
A Muslim in Germany has been caught on video saying this to a German man:”
“Islam is coming to take over Germany whether you want it or not … not through war but by the fact that Germans don’t reproduce and Muslims have seven to eight children for each wife but not only that, your daughters will marry bearded Muslims and wear the hijab; their sons will wear a beard!”The Muslims will have four wives and 27 children living on the welfare state, and what does the German man have? One child and maybe a little pet dog! The German has taken advantage of the Muslim for too long, just so he can drive his Mercedes. … “Now Islam is coming and your daughters will wear the hijab!

Joshua Tree — I just return from a weeklong trip for a yearly 4 day UFO/ET “Contact in the Desert” Event.
This event was well attended by over thirty world renowned UFO personages, and when event was over, as I was on Greyhound Bus back to OKC,
I took several pictures. But when I decided to review them, I noticed that two pictures had very bright light Orbs in them which I did not see when picture was taken. I have seen several other UFOs in the past, so I know them when I see then.
I am also a Zetan Contactee since 1998. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Orlando – On May 16, 2017, my dad took this picture near Epcot Center. My dad said he was at a hotel in Orlando on the 18th floor at around 8 AM in the morning. He was looking out his hotel room this past Tuesday admiring the view. He never saw any object in the sky until he got home and looked through the picture. So it could very well be a flash, but he took other photos of the same scene without the object there. My dad used his I-phone 7. I also attached the other pictures he sent me. Thanks for any information you can provide. I find this very fascinating. I hope that you can figure it out. I did some research and there were some pictures and video online of UFO’s in that area.
Note: Although the photo above is somewhat compelling it is likely a reflection of a light fixture off of the window glass and therefore is not a real object. Several other photos show the object. Thanks to William Puckett, Director Http://www.UFOsnw.com
Miami– I saw a triangle with orange circle lights on the corners in 2012. I was working outside and doing squats looking at the sky.
I saw it but got lost in some trees. I am blessed that someone saw it with me (my dad) otherwise I would go mad.
I told my family about it. It glided smoothly. The second I saw it, I thought it was none other than a ufo it was so distinct how it glided and the lights on it.Thanks to MUFON CMS
Illinois “Vs” Craft
The picture was taken with one of my sister’s trail cameras on April 20, 2017 at 11:49:23 am in the southeast sky.
She leaves the cameras out for a couple of weeks and this strange picture was from one of them.
She contacted MUFON but has not received anything back. I was wondering if you know what it is and if you seen anything like it before? Thanks to MUFON CMS

Annapolis — I’m traveling all over America, helping people to break the chains. I want you to know that I’m still witnessing UFOs at times during my travels, and as recent as yesterday morning May 15th, 2017 at my home at 5 am.
I was just getting into bed and turned the TV off at 4:55 Am and the only sound in the room was a fan. I had just gotten myself comfortable, when I heard a copter outside of the building. I quickly dismissed it as the fan motor and tried to go to sleep. It was getting louder and louder. Then I asked my wife if she heard it and she said yes. I jumped out of bed and went to the window to see a very large triangular UFO, slowly moving away to the Northeast. It looked more like a boomerang and it had white lights all over it, with a red light under it. The red light was flashing as it moved away and then it stopped flashing. I saw the craft wobble from side to side and the red light began flashing again as it moved towards I-97. Anyone driving on that part of I-97, at that time surely would have seen it! As you know George, I have taken hundreds and hundreds of UFO pictures since October 5, 1995 and I’m attaching a few for your review. Please feel free to add them in Filers Files if you like. I’m convinced that the UFO phenomenon is absolutely connected to paranormal/supernatural activity, (along with divine experiences as well.) Psalm 68:17 says: King James Bible the chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels: the Lord is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.
In my work as a Spiritual Warrior, I have come across a few people who were under demonic possession, and had eyes that looked Reptilian. Some of these people told me of having UFO experiences as well. There’s much more that I could say, but I will stop here.
Brentwood — During the morning of May 5, 2017, I was taking pictures from across the street from the 360′ free-standing Microwave Tower at the intersection of Hanley and Manchester Roads. I wanted a good picture for a Power Point presentation and didn’t see anything. The next day I was editing the pictures and in two of the three pictures there was a star-like image. The three pictures were taken two seconds apart and the image was in the last two. Within two seconds something wasn’t there and then it was there at 10:20 am, I returned to the exact photo spot on May 7, 2017, at 10:30 am and took a series of 12 tower photos and 11 frames had 22 points of light. Two seconds later in #6 they are gone but now there are two lights considerably right of the tower. I returned on May 9 at 10:20 am and took a series of 10 pictures, 2 seconds apart. Seven of the frames had 9 lights. I have included frames 1 and 2 where the light(s) has a fuzzy quality. I returned at 10:20 AM on May 21, took 10 more pictures and caught 4 more lights. In summary, on 4 occasions I took a total of 35 pictures and zoomed into 38 points of interest. I can’t account for the now-you-see-it and now-you-don’t UFOs and two seconds later two appear somewhere else. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Las Vegas — On May 15, 2017, at 2:16 pm on Las Vegas Boulevard I was shooting the Nellis Air Force Base aircraft coming in for a landing. I have Sony a350 DSLR, shooting specs of iso 400, f8. I was looking north as some airplanes come straight down the Vegas Boulevard to make two 180 degree turns and land at Nellis. There were. At about plane 18 in a group of 22 planes, I spotted a light coming behind and out of the clouds. I began to shoot, getting 10 shots off in 12 seconds. I recorded an image on 9 out of 10. The UFO is about two miles away that was like a bright light, but when I blew it up, it looked like a descending Smokey Goldfish Cracker. The object started up at 1000 feet and pulled a 45 degree fast descent and just disappeared. The planes run north parallel to the runway, do a sharp 180 and fly south for the landing. Whatever this object was it was observing the aircraft landing?
Note: Enlargement reveals an irregularly shaped object. I don’t have any reason to believe that the object is bird or balloon. The witness saw the object and thought it was unusual and that it appeared to be observing the Nellis AFB jets landing at Las Vegas Airport. The first photo in the animation shows one of the jets landing. Thanks to William Puckett, Director Http://www.UFOsnw.com

Albuquerque – I was hiking in Petroglyph National Monument in Piedras Marcadas Canyon on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at 4:30 pm. I was returning to the trail head when I noticed a bright pulsating light pulsating every 5-10 seconds. It was moving south of Sandia Peak and I had my camera with zoom lenses and was able to capture several photos of the object.
The object was about 10 miles from me descending below the mountain peak. It was too large to be the Sandia Peak Tram. As object pulsated I attempted to capture photos of the craft. I stopped other hikers as the object quickly ascended above the Sandia Mountains. After several minutes, its altitude lowered and it suddenly disappeared. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Medina — On May 17th 2017, around 7 PM I walked outside on my deck and noticed the southeastern sky was making a twister type cloud. I went and grabbed my camera and took a few pictures and nothing was out of the ordinary. I went back to the other side of the house and looked up, and yelled to my fiancé. “Look at the sky!!” He also saw this amazing sighting for only two minutes or so, the twister had formed and a blue glowing ball was coming closer and closer. It appeared and disappeared, being closer every time. The blue glowing ball, or orb, ended up being only about 500 feet higher before it disappeared. We then watched and took more pictures because the clouds looked like they had something in them. After it all started to blow over, or break apart… there were smoke like clouds that looked different than any other we have seen, and then they were gone. We felt extremely exhilarated and excited about what we had seen. We saw these awesome glowing blue orbs in the pictures and we then decided to share the beauty. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Texas Green Light
San Antonio – I have observed a green light arrive nightly about from 8 PM and stay until 4AM, for the last three weeks since the beginning of May.
I see it only when sitting in my entry way at a certain angle. The object is green, very bright, and has flashing lights that seems to reconfigure.

Toronto — My Mother-in-law was visiting Downtown Toronto with my wife on May 17, 2017, and took some pictures of the tall buildings on her way home.
Next day she was showing pictures of downtown buildings to her friends at the ESL program where she is studying English, and they noticed that there was a strange object flying in the sky.
The picture is really clear and you can see something flying that looks like a space ship. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Chile Lights
Santiago de Chile -After a night storm, I took two pictures of the Snow Mountains on May 18, 2017. My view of the photos shows a light ascending that I couldn’t see when I took the pictures) My position is on a little terrace of my apartment. The site is in front of San Ramon mountain in Los Andes, Santiago de Chile. I can´t see the object during the shooting of the photos; I only see it while checking the pictures. When I looked up between shots I saw the lights upper movement. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Germany Object
Stuttgart— I was filming an American Football game in Germany on November 9, 2009, when I turned around and saw this object hovering in mid air.
I asked my camera man to film this real quickly, he filmed it sadly not long enough, after he stopped filming, and the object flew off. Thanks to MUFON CMS
India Lights
Bhopal— I was on my terrace at 5 PM, and was clicking pictures of the cloud cover using my mobile camera on May 25, 2017.
After taking 4-5 pictures and a short video when I viewed those pictures there were two pictures within an interval of a minute without turning on the camera flash. These images had a yellow color circular light which had descended down in the second image from its initial position in the first image. The other images that I have taken with the camera flash do not show that yellow circular light. I am amazed and want to know what I have clicked. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Thailand Light
Bangkok –. I looked out of my balcony and noticed an extremely bright light in the sky, quite low on May 6, 2017. I assumed it to be a star which was burning unusually bright, but on closer inspection it was below the low clouds.
This object was so bright it would leave a blind spot in my vision with tentacles of frozen/static electricity. The hovering object seemed to be a mushroom or triangle shape with a base. I observed it for almost two hours, even as the sun began to rise. It was still visible in the sunlight but slightly harder to see I became fearful as I had never seen anything like it. I went to bed around 7am and the object was still there. When I woke up a few hours later, the object had disappeared. Thanks to MUFON CMS
United Kingdom /England Sightings
Newton Abbot Devon England — I was watching a propeller plane fly above the clouds when I spotted a black object that was emerging from the clouds.
I quickly took a photograph and watched as the object went back into the clouds from where it emerged. The Photograph was taken on the 14th of May 2017 at 12:02 PM. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Newton Abbot Devon England — I have again spotted and photographed an alien craft near a passenger plane. The photo was taken on of May 22, 2017, at 11:55 AM. It was a beautiful hot day, so I decided to go out in the hot sun and sky watch. I watched as many passenger planes passed over head, but I didn’t see anything strange so I decided to focus my attention on distant planes. I spotted a passenger plane and an alien craft that was moving up along the planes contrail towards the plane. Once the alien craft was near the plane it matched the planes air speed and began to follow the plane. These alien craft are checking out more and more passing aircraft over this airspace. It is as if they are looking for someone or something. The mind really boggles to why they are so interested with our planes? I continued to watch the plane and the alien craft as they flew across the sky. Then after a while the alien craft seemed to lose interest with the plane and broke off its pursuit and then flew off into nearby clouds. The alien craft was oval shaped and was the size of the passenger plane. There were also other smaller black spheres flying that were ejected by the larger alien craft. Thanks to MUFON CMS
United Kingdom /Scotland Saucer
Blairgowrie –. The sun was out and there was far away mist like clouds on April 2, 2017. I was walking on the road not far from the standing stone and thought I saw a giant star in my peripheral vision. I looked closer to it and could see a rough outline of a shadow and seemed like something metallic and spherical. But the shadows did not show spherical but as if it was round and slim and on its side, as if it was a flying saucer.
The shadow was just on the left side of the edge so I knew it was not spherical like a weather balloon would be. It was not shiny silver but as if was similar to a shiny surface. It was stationary, and I am not too sure if it shrank as it kept fading quickly and coming back again. Then it became a small ball of light and then disappeared completely. Thanks to MUFON CMS

An illustration of Bigelow Aerospace’s expandable spacecraft
In an eye-opening interview on “60 Minutes” Sunday night, aerospace mogul and entrepreneur Robert Bigelow said he was ‘absolutely convinced’ there were alien visitors to Earth.
Most of the segment focused on how NASA and the Las Vegas-based Bigelow Aerospace are in a partnership to develop an expandable craft for humans to use in space. Bigelow’s far-reaching vision puts him right in the middle of a new privatization of space, a race that includes billionaires Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos.
In the following video, Bigelow describes a typical expandable system to be used on future space flights.
However, during the “60 Minutes” interview with correspondent Lara Logan, the conversation shifted to Bigelow’s reported obsession with UFOs and aliens.
Logan: “Do you believe in aliens?”
Bigelow: “I’m absolutely convinced. That’s all there is to it.”
Logan: “Do you also believe that UFOs have come to Earth?”
Bigelow: “There has been and is an existing presence, an ET presence. And I spent millions and millions and millions ― I probably spent more as an individual than anybody else in the United States has ever spent on this subject.”
Logan: “Is it risky for you to say in public that you believe in UFOs and aliens?”
Bigelow: “I don’t give a damn. I don’t care.”
Logan: “You don’t worry that some people will say, ‘Did you hear that guy, he sounds like he’s crazy’?”
Bigelow: “I don’t care. It’s not gonna make a difference. It’s not gonna change reality of what I know.”
Bigelow wouldn’t elaborate on what kind of results he had achieved from his well-funded UFO research. When asked if he thought future space missions would result in any encounters between humans and aliens, Bigelow said, “You don’t have to go anywhere. It’s just like right under people’s noses.”
While Bigelow declined to describe his personal UFO encounters, he offered more elaborate details about UFOs, extraterrestrials and the private space industry during an interview on the national radio program, “Coast to Coast AM.”
'The Close Encounters Man' tells the unlikely story of how the government's astrophysicist debunker became the phenomenon's most expert defender.
If you're jonesing for an extraterrestrial, you should check outThe Close Encounters Manby Mark O'Connell. O'Connell, a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and founder of the UFO blog High Strangeness, set out to write "a UFO book people wouldn't need to hide from other people." He found his ideal subject in J. Allen Hynek, the astronomer hired by the United States Air Force in 1948 to debunk the reports of strange objects in the sky flooding in from across the country. Eventually Hynek broke with his handlers and became the first scientist to lend credence to the UFO phenomenon. The author of 1972's The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study, he would go on to found the Center for UFO Studies in 1973, present a speech on flying saucers to the United Nations in 1978, and develop the "close encounter" scale that would inspire Steven Spielberg's popular Close Encounters of the Third Kind ("a huge boon to his work," O'Connell told me. "They shot a scene where the little aliens grab Hynek's pipe from him and stick it up their noses, but it was cut down to a six-second cameo.")
In telling the life story of Hynek, the "astro-beatnik," O'Connell winds up with a stunning panorama of the UFO movement—from fringe conspiracy theorists to amateur astronomers to agnostic scientists—as well as its colossal impact on pop culture and modern science. I recently spoke with O'Connell over the phone about Hynek's unique story of skeptic turned believer, the scientific study of the inexplicable, and what makes a good UFO witness.
A fascinating new book seriously tackles the question of extraterrestrial life from the perspective of leading astronomers, astrophysicists, geneticists, and neuroscientists.
VICE: What had to happen for a scientist as disciplined as Hynek to reach an epiphany and come around to a belief in flying saucers?
Mark O'Connell: It was a gradual process punctuated by traumatic moments. He had been involved in the Air Force's first UFO study, Project Sign, where he simply looked over the collected UFO reports and classified as many as he could as misidentified astrological objects like comets or meteorological phenomena like strange clouds, or normal things like aircraft or weather balloons. At the end, there were about 20 percent of the cases left unsolved. He just put those aside, thinking with enough time and resources we could probably explain those away as well. So he filed the report, went back to teach at Ohio State and Wesleyan Universities.
What led to Hynek getting involved with UFOs again?
Three years later, the Air Force's UFO studies were reinvigorated under a new commander who wanted to take a fresh look at things. When he discovered Hynek was still teaching about 90 miles up the road, he paid him a visit to hear more about the work he'd done. And Hynek was shocked to discover it hadn't faded away. People were still seeing and reporting close encounters and there remained a consistent 20 percent that couldn't be explained. The numbers never changed, but his thinking changed.
How did Hynek's thoughts on UFOs change?
Shortly after that he gave an address to the Optical Society of America in Boston in 1952. He said, "Look, this is something we need to study that could represent an entirely unknown realm of nature, and as scientists we ought to be curious enough to want to study it." And that was earthshaking. But he often outraged the other side too, like in the infamous swamp gas case in Michigan of 1966. Over a hundred witnesses had seen floating lights in the nighttime and it caused huge national furor, made headlines all over the country. So the Air Force sent Hynek in to investigate. After three days of intense investigations, Hynek—a guy who went where the facts lead him and nowhere else—concluded that these people had quite possibly seen swamp gas. Everyone in Michigan was deeply offended to be shown up nationally as crackpots. So Hynek said, "You know, I'm not going to carry water for the Air Force any more," and went his own way and decided to begin conducting his own research. And, by the way, one of the things he said to the Optical Society was something that's always stuck in my mind: "Ridicule is not part of the scientific method, and the American public should not be taught that it is."
Watch on Motherboard: 'The Space Bear: The First Animal to Survive Space':
Where's the line between a conspiracy theorist and a fact-based skeptic who becomes skeptical even of other skeptics?
I don't think we've found that line and that was one of the frustrations of Hynek's career. There was a brief period in the early 1980s when his Center for UFO Studies was really thriving. They had money coming in—they had a lot of support from the scientific establishment and were able to dedicate resources to investigating UFO cases. But over time they became less exciting to other UFO people. They were grabbing fewer headlines; financing fell apart; and the Center wasn't able to do nearly as much. So I think Hynek's efforts to bring the phenomenon into the sunlight and devote scientific study to it never had the opportunity to fully blossom. His goal was to cross that line and bring those two sides together. He came close, but I think he never quite achieved it.
What were Hynek's chief takeaways about the study of UFOs?
Hynek observed that a meteorologist can't study a tornado in a lab, only the results. He thought the same thing about UFOs: You have to get a little creative when you're researching something as off-the-wall as UFOs, which do seem to deliberately make it hard for us to understand them. I compare it to the "Confuse-a-Cat" sketch from Monty Python. We're the confused cat and we need to be shocked out of our stupor by something that seems to have little to do with our version of reality. And so many of us who write and think about UFOs have to reach for new frameworks to define the issue and then study it.
How has our relationship with UFOs changed in the present time as compared to Hynek's heyday?
It's changed quite a bit. One of the sad things about my book—and maybe this makes a case for writing a sequel—is that Hynek passed away in 1986, and it was exactly a year later that the entire UFO field went through a complete paradigm shift with the publication of Whitley Strieber's Communion [which was later made into a movie starring Christopher Walken]. Strieber was already a successful horror writer at the time, right up there with Stephen King and Peter Straub. In Communion, he tells the true—according to him!—story of his alien abduction while he and his family were staying at their cottage in upstate New York. So all of a sudden, the alien encounter narrative was flipped on its head. Up to that point, close encounters, when they were reported, generally took place in isolated locales—a lonely country highway or a deserted farm out in the boonies where there would be very few people to see what was happening. Now, after Communion, the aliens are appearing in your bedroom at night, a scenario Budd Hopkins and several other researchers confirmed. Now whether that shift is conscious or whether it points to some change in how we see ourselves, who knows?
If on one side of the spectrum we have Carl Sagan and on the other, say, ErichVon Däniken, who theorized that ancient culture and religion was created by alien astronauts, where do we place Hynek?
I would put him maybe close to the center, but more on the Sagan side. They both had a lot of contempt for UFO charlatans. So yeah, he would definitely put himself far from the Von Däniken side, but he also would have thought Sagan was being closed-minded and intellectually dishonest to a degree.
What can ufology bring to modern science?
The ability to use imagination as part of the scientific process. We hear all the time from NASA how, just recently, we've discovered a planet that has five or six other planets in its orbit or how the Tabby Star dims in such a way as to suggest an alien megastructure. We have all these wild, seemingly impossible things that are now proving to be true. At the same time, we have people—and I'm not knocking them because I love and respect the work they do—like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy, who're crusading for scientific education, but will draw the curtain on UFO stuff because it "makes us look silly." I think we need to get past that, because it doesn't make you look silly, it makes you look like someone who is interested in learning more about the world around us and finding the borderline of science and studying the things that science could not explain. And I think that's a pretty good approach for any scientist.
What makes for a good UFO eyewitness?
A keen sense of observation is key. A strong linguistic capability is very helpful because people who see UFOs are trying to describe something unheard of in human experience and need to be able to develop a new language. Too often you see people unable to describe what they've seen and experienced simply because there are no words for it, at least not yet.
I've been haunted by the fear that there is no vast conspiracy guiding the government, only stupidity and bungling. To what extent are you able to believe in the military's ability to orchestrate certain cover-ups, as opposed to just lose things or mishandle data?
Hynek made a good distinction: "You can cover up knowing something or you can cover not knowing something." I think government obfuscation is a big part of the story, but for many people that translates into "Oh, they're hiding something from us." One of the first important UFO writers, Donald Keyhoe, was provoked by the fact that nobody in the Air Force would return his calls. His reaction was, "Ah ha, they're covering something up!" Well, no, they just didn't want to talk to you.
This interview has been lightly edited and condensed for clarity.
Recent work by J.W. McCormack appears in Conjunctions, the Culture Trip, the New York Times, and the New Republic.
Close Encounters Manby Mark O'Connell will be published on June 13 by Harper Collins.

UFO expert accuses co-author of 'deceiving' him with account of sighting during infamous Rendlesham Forest incident
Peter Robbins has sparked a war of words after revealing he now believes that former US airman Larry Warren's account of the incident near RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, in 1980, was "not true"

A UFO expert has become embroiled in a bitter feud with his co-author and one-time friend after accusing him of 'deceiving' him with his 'false' account of the infamous Rendlesham Forest incident.
Peter Robbins and Larry Warren co-authored 'Left at East Gate: A First-Hand Account of the Bentwater-Woodbridge UFO Incident, its Cover-Up, and Investigation' 30 years ago, but are now at loggerheads.
US researcher Robbins sparked the row when he accused Warren, a former member of the US Air Force Security Police who now lives in Liverpool, of 'deceiving' him during a radio interview.
Warren, in turn, blasted Nick Pope, former head of the British government's 'UFO desk', for siding with Robbins. He hit back Pope on Facebook for branding him a liar in an online rant.
American Warren claims he witnessed a UFO land near RAF Bentwaters, Suffolk, while stationed there with the US Air Force in December 1980.

He blew the whistle on the so-called Rendlesham Forest incident in 1983 in a News of the World interview and went on to co-write the best-selling book with Robbins, which was published in 1997.
However, Robbins has now cast serious doubts over the validity of Warren's account.
Speaking on the Inception Radio Network, Robbins said: "Over the past year, even a bit more, highly specific information has been brought to my attention that has disturbed me tremendously.
"The encompassed picture is the subjective account of my co-author's story of the events that he was involved in, the events surrounding him, things that don't directly relate to the story but to his life, were not only not accurate but that they were not true.
"Having worked with him for decades, for having spent several intense years at the beginning we're talking 30 years ago next month when we shook hands, that I would assist him in writing this book. I have a long history with Larry Warren and I felt that after doing the research that he was absolutely good on his word."
Left At East Gate, by Warren and Robbins, is a bestseller(Photo: cascadenews)
He added: "I felt I had proved enough to myself of Larry's account and details surrounding it that he was telling the truth. And I feel now that in part that was not the case and there was an intent to deceive. To say this has tore me up over the last year is an understatement."
The Rendlesham incident took place in December 1980 over a series of three nights.
On December 26, 1980, military personnel at the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge saw a strange light in Rendlesham Forest, which lies between the two bases.
Three airmen were sent out to investigate where two of them encountered a small, triangular shaped craft.
One of them, Jim Penniston, got close enough to touch the side of the object. He and another of the airmen present, John Burroughs, made sketches of the craft for witness statements.
Two nights later, Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt and his team then encountered the UFO.
The Rendlesham Forest incident occurred near RAF Bentwaters in 1980(Photo: Vimeo)
He said later: "Here I am, a senior official who routinely denies this sort of thing and diligently works to debunk them, and I'm involved in the middle of something I can't explain."
Despite an MOD investigation the Rendlesham Forest incident remains unexplained, despite theories it was a lighthouse, a meteor shower or a satellite re-entering the Earth's atmosphere and burning up.
Warren's account differs as he maintains the UFO landed in a farmer's field and was seen by dozens of military personnel including the Base Commander General Gordon Williams.
He also claims small entities could be seen floating underneath the strange craft, which shone beams of light into the nuclear bunkers at the NATO base at the height of the Cold War.
Nick Pope, who ran the Ministry of Defence's Secretariat (Airstaff) 2a - dubbed the 'UFO desk', which investigated military sightings but was closed in 2009 due to budget cuts - has backed Robbins' claims.
Nick Pope, who ran the MoD's 'UFO desk', is siding with Robbins(Photo: Publicity picture)
In a post to his 4,980 friends and 13, 852 followers on Facebook, he praised Robbins for "having the courage and integrity to make what was clearly a difficult and painful admission that he'd been taken in by Warren's lies."
He ended his post by saying: "The verdict from the wider UFO community is clear: the Larry Warren story is officially dead."
But Warren slammed the ex-MOD man, who now lives in Tucson, Arizona, for "whoring himself out" in a 20-minute Facebook rant.
He fumed: "I'm aware of your posts on your page, your slander, defamation, whatever you want to call it. You've been out of the UK a long time, you're not really respected here brother. You don't speak for Ufology brother, I can tell you that, you just whore yourself out for just about whatever you can do, that's fine. Works for you."
He added: "I wrote all my parts in my book and I remain proud of them. I stand by them."
Warren has engaged in a war of words with Nick Pope on Facebook(Photo: cascadenews.co.uk)
Warren also accuses Pope of "abject jealousy" and offers to hand over a UFO courage award he received from UFO Truth Magazine, edited by former police detective Gary Heseltine, at a conference in Holmfirth,Yorkshire, last September.
He tells Pope: "Your books tanked after months, my book's been in print 20 years and will be print another 100 probably. I've been around longer than you in this and I've seen it all for years."
Warren challenges Pope to take it off him, saying: "You can have it if you can take it from me. I'll even bring the gift box. You seem to want it because I don't deserve it.
"You stuck your nose into Rendlesham years ago to the point some morons out there think you were working the MOD desk when they happened - I think you were being beat up on the school yard at that time. So that's impossible but you don't stop that myth."
He ends his video by saying: "The book is my story, 100 per cent. I've done stuff that you could never do and seen things you'll never see and I'll still be standing tall when you go cock a doodle do ... You were never in the military, you wore a tie somewhere."

Spacecraft Galileo: To Jupiter and Its Moons
Spacecraft Galileo: To Jupiter and Its Moons
By Elizabeth Howell, Space.com Contributor
An artist's conception of the Galileo spacecraft, which was launched in 1989 for a mission to Jupiter.

Galileo was the first spacecraft to examine Jupiter and its moons for an extended period.
It launched from the payload bay of space shuttle Atlantis in 1989, got some speed boosts by swinging past Earth twice and Venus once, then arrived at Jupiter at last in 1995.
Circling the solar system's most giant planet for eight years, Galileo beamed back a string of discoveries to Earth despite encountering several mechanical problems.
It discovered evidence of saltwater below the surfaces of three moons – Europa, Ganymede and Callisto – and also got close to the infamous "pizza moon" Io as its volcanoes belched into the atmosphere.
When Galileo was almost out of fuel, NASA deliberately sent the spacecraft on a suicide plunge into Jupiter on Sept. 21, 2003. The sacrifice, the agency said, was necessary to protect Europa – which likely has a subsurface ocean that could contain life.
Galileo's legacy
Studying Jupiter from Earth is easier than ever thanks to improvements in imaging technology, making it easier for even amateur astronomers to watch Jupiter's weather and periodic cometary impacts. Along with Galileo's data, this is helping professional astronomers gather data on how gas giants change on the scale of a few years, or decades.
Still, wider mysteries about Jupiter remain – even as NASA returned to the planet in 2016 with the Juno mission. Some missions are being considered for Jupiter's icy moons in the 2030s, such as NASA's Europa Clipper and the European Space Agency's JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE). Open questions concerning Jupiter include the global abundance of water in Jupiter, how deep storm features go and where Jupiter's magnetic field comes from.
Galileo's work at Jupiter has gained even wider implications in the years afterward, because scientists have discovered thousands of exoplanet candidates. Studying Jupiter in our own solar system gives us a window into the formation of these planets outside of our solar system.
It's not clear if the solar system shares all of the same "life history" characteristics of other solar systems. For example, some Jupiter-sized extrasolar planets are very close to their parent star, and as such as are called "hot Jupiters." It's possible these planets migrated, but the processes are poorly understood.
The case for Jupiter
Jupiter was a target of interest for NASA for decades before Galileo's launch. Four spacecraft had flown by the giant planet before – Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11, and Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.
Pioneer 10, when it zoomed by the planet in 1973, discovered Jupiter's radiation was far less than scientists had anticipated. This made a long-term mission to Jupiter more feasible, since the spacecraft wouldn't need to be as heavily shielded (making it more expensive to launch.)
NASA was intrigued by the thought of a Jupiter mission, but the idea went through years of budgetary discussions and management changes, as well as machinations in Congress.
By 1977, NASA was far enough in its planning to propose a "Jupiter orbiting probe" in its budget, but the idea was thrown out by a congressional appropriations subcommittee with oversight of the agency. That decision was reversed after a massive lobbying effort by the scientific community, and Congress approved the project later that year.
It would take another 12 years to get Galileo off the ground. There were continual government funding threats to the mission and even the existence of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where it was being built. Debates also arose about Galileo's planned launch vehicle. Then, just as the probe was readying for a space shuttle mission, Challenger exploded and killed seven astronauts in 1986, grounding the fleet for two years.
Named for astronomer Galileo Galilei, the spacecraft launched at last on Oct. 18, 1989, from the payload bay of space shuttle Atlantis. To save on fuel, the probe whipped by Venus once and Earth twice to pick up speed, with the aim to reach Jupiter in 1995.
Solving problems in space
Operating missions for the long duration can be a marathon for both humans and spacecraft alike. As components on the spacecraft break down, it's up to the people on the ground to figure out how to resurrect them – or do without them.

The corresponding infrared image on the right was taken at 4.7 μm on October 16 2001 in daytime and has a spatial resolution of 30 km/pixel obtained . Galileo's most prominent failures were a high-gain antenna that failed to open – threatening the transmissions of data back to Earth – and a data tape recorder that temporarily jammed during the final approach to Jupiter.
The sticky antenna, shaped somewhat like an umbrella, lay stowed on the spacecraft for nearly two years after launch. NASA determined it might be risky to set it free when Galileo was closer to the sun during its gravity assist by Venus.
On April 11, 1991, controllers sent a command for Galileo to unfurl the antenna. The motors ran for eight minutes at higher power levels than expected, which indicated there might be a problem. The spacecraft then failed to send a signal to Earth saying the antenna had opened.
A fault analysis determined that some of the antenna's "ribs" got stuck. Managers did everything from rapidly spinning the spacecraft to exposing the antenna to sunlight, with no luck.
To get around the problem, they came up with ways to compress data so that Galileo could send back more information to Earth, which helped save the crippled mission.
NASA now relied on Galileo's on-board data recorder and low-gain transmission antennas to bring information back to Earth. That worked well until the recorder jammed for 15 hours while rewinding on Oct. 11, 1995 – just as the spacecraft was finally closing in on Jupiter.
Fortunately, NASA found a work-around and was able to resume work a few weeks later. The tape recorder acted up in future years, though, necessitating more fixes.
"Among the Galileo mission's memorable achievements were the repeated successes of its staff in solving serious technical problems," wrote Michael Meltzer in the NASA publication Mission to Jupiter: A History of the Galileo Project.
"In each instance, the team attacked potentially mission-ending problems and found ingenious ways to keep the spacecraft operational and productive.
Entering Jupiter's system
One of Galileo's first science targets was Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9. Jupiter's gravity had pulled the comet towards the planet and broken it up into more than 20 pieces. When the shards slammed into Jupiter in July 1994, the astronomical community eagerly watched. Galileo was en route to Jupiter at that time and snapped some shots of the hits.
The spacecraft encountered "interplanetary dust storms" on its way to Jupiter, possibly from particles coming from within the Jovian system. At one point, Galileo was tracking 20,000 dust particles a day, compared to a typical one particle every three days.
Galileo was still flying at Jupiter when in July 1995, it released a probe to smack the planet's atmosphere in December. When the probe finished its descent, NASA was surprised at its measurements of helium – half of what they expected – and the dryness of the region in which the probe flew.
"These initial findings are encouraging scientists to rethink their theories of Jupiter's formation and the nature of planetary evolution processes," wrote NASA in a January 1996 press release.
Planetary, moon and asteroid science
Galileo itself reached Jupiter on Dec. 7, 1995, beginning its years of circling the planet and its moons.
These global views of Jupiter's icy moon Europa were captured by NASA's Galileo spacecraft in June 1997. The image on the left shows Europa in natural color, while the right-side image has enhanced colors to bring out subtle color differences to show differences between pure water ice (white and bluish white) and non-ice components (red, brown and yellow spots).

In the early days, Galileo took a close look at the faint rings of Jupiter to find out how they formed. Data from the spacecraft determined that meteoroids, crashing into small moons around Jupiter, were sending dust up around the planet. Over time, the dust coalesced into rings.
While Galileo was often called a mission to Jupiter, the spacecraft also made extensive observations of the planet's largest moons.
It found evidence of a liquid ocean underneath Europa's surface, sparking questions about what sort of life could lie underneath. From watching volcanoes at Io, Galileo's data showed the moon's volcanic activity could be as much as 100 times more than what is seen on Earth. And at Ganymede, Galileo found the first magnetic field around a moon.
Galileo even made a few side discoveries. When taking pictures of the asteroid Ida, it discovered there was a smaller object orbiting around it. Later called Dactyl, this was the first confirmed satellite of an asteroid.
In 2003, the aging spacecraft – battling radiation problems and other mechanical issues – was running low on fuel. NASA chose to send Galileo straight into Jupiter rather than leave it in orbit, just in case the spacecraft accidentally crashed into Europa and disrupted possible life there.
Galileo broke up in Jupiter's atmosphere on Sept. 21, 2003.
Saturn Solstice: Cassini Gets 'Ringside Seat' to Dramatic Seasonal Changes
Saturn Solstice: Cassini Gets 'Ringside Seat' to Dramatic Seasonal Changes

The hexagonal vortex at Saturn's north pole changed color significantly between June 2013 (left) and April 2017 (right), as seen in views from the Cassini spacecraft. For the left image, each frame occurs approximately 130 minutes after the previous one, and for the right, each frame follows after an average of 230 minutes. Researchers combined images taken with the spacecraft's red, green and blue filters for the natural-color views.

The Cassini spacecraft at Saturn watched over the ringed planet's solstice Wednesday (May 24), accomplishing the main goal of its second extended mission. A solstice occurs on Saturn roughly every 15 Earth years as its seasons change.
Cassini arrived at Saturn in 2004, and the spacecraft completed its primary mission to study the planet, its rings and its moons by 2008. Its first extended mission, which lasted until 2010, was to observe the system during the planet's equinox, when the sun strikes the rings edge-on and the days are of equal length on the north and south poles. The goal of its second extended mission — a seven-year plan called the Solstice Mission — was to observe all the way up to the north pole's summer solstice (when the days are longest at Saturn's north pole, and shortest at the planet's south pole) and investigate the system's seasonal changes.
"During Cassini's Solstice Mission, we have witnessed — up close for the first time — an entire season at Saturn," Linda Spilker, Cassini project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California, said in a statement. "The Saturn system undergoes dramatic transitions from winter to summer, and thanks to Cassini, we had a ringside seat." [Epic Cassini Mission to Saturn Gets Awesome Video Treatment]
A giant storm passed by its own tail after circling Saturn in this true-color Cassini photo, taken Feb. 25, 2011, about 12 weeks after the storm started. Lightning deep in the planet's atmosphere produced significant radio noise during the storm. The storm formed and dispersed over the course of seven months; researchers said this type of Saturn storm happens only about every 30 Earth years.
Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
During the Solstice Mission, researchers watched a huge storm encircle the planet and disperse over the course of seven months. They watched the hexagonal jet stream surrounding Saturn's north pole change from blue to yellow (except for the very center) over the course of the northern hemisphere's spring.
Cassini data suggests that the increased sunlight interacts with compounds in the upper atmosphere to form particles called photochemical aerosols, which accumulate into a yellowish haze. The very center may stay blue for one of two reasons, researchers said in an image caption: it hasn't been exposed to sunlight as long as the areas around it because it's at the very top of the planet, or the circulation in the whirling vortex pulls the compounds downward.
Cassini saw the seasonal changes come over the planet suddenly based on latitude, rather than gradually, the researchers said.
"Eventually, a whole hemisphere undergoes change, but it gets there by these jumps at specific latitude bands at different times in the season," Robert West, a member of Cassini's imaging team at JPL, said in the statement.
The solstice's intense sunlight heated Saturn's rings, letting Cassini's instruments better investigate ring particles' composition and the way they clump together. The planet's orientation compared to the sun and Earth, with its rings tipped maximally toward Earth, also meant that Cassini could easily send a radio signal through the densest part of the rings to investigate, according to the statement.
Storms on Saturn's moon Titan changed as Saturn moved through equinox and toward solstice. In this 2011 image, methane clouds can be seen concentrated near the moon's equator.
Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
On Saturn's largest moon, Titan, methane storm clouds shifted up from the south toward the moon's equator from 2004 to 2010. Their corresponding shift northward as the solstice approached was surprisingly slow; according to the statement, cloud models had expected the activity to happen years earlier.
But some action was sudden: In 2013, haze and trace hydrocarbons formerly found only in the north suddenly built up in the Titan's south, indicating that its atmospheric circulation had changed direction due to the changing sun exposure, the statement said.
"Observations of how the locations of cloud activity change and how long such changes take give us important information about the workings of Titan's atmosphere and also its surface, as rainfall and wind patterns change with the seasons too," Elizabeth Turtle, a researcher on Cassini's imaging team at Johns Hopkins University's Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland, said in the statement.
And on Saturn's moon Enceladus, which hosts a subsurface ocean and blasts geysers of material out through its plumes, the main seasonal change was its southern hemisphere's transition to winter darkness. This change let Cassini monitor the moon's temperature more easily, to investigate the intriguing moon.
Cassini is in the middle of the "Grand Finale" phase of its mission, in which it is diving between Saturn and its rings repeatedly to investigate the planet more closely than ever before. Once it finishes seeing the planet through the change of seasons and charting its moons, rings and surface as deeply as possible, Cassini will plunge into Saturn's atmosphere on Sept. 15. The mission is a collaboration among NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

Two monster black holes are apparently on a collision course near the heart of a nearby galaxy, a new study reports.
Astronomers have spotted an extremely bright object located about 1,500 light-years from the supermassive black hole known to occupy the heart of Cygnus A, an oft-studied galaxy that lies about 800 million light-years from Earth.
"We think we've found a second supermassive black hole in this galaxy, indicating that it [the galaxy] has merged with another galaxy in the astronomically recent past," study co-author Chris Carilli, of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in New Mexico, said in a statement. [Images: Black Holes of the Universe]
"These two would be one of the closest pairs of supermassive black holes ever discovered, likely themselves to merge in the future," Carilli added.
The researchers studied Cygnus A in 2015 and 2016 using the Very Large Array (VLA), a system of radio telescopes in New Mexico. These observations revealed the mysterious bright object, which had not appeared in earlier VLA images of Cygnus A from the 1980s and 1990s.
The completion of a VLA upgrade in 2012 motivated the new imaging campaign, study team members said.
"To our surprise, we found a prominent new feature near the galaxy's nucleus that did not appear in any previous published images. This new feature is bright enough that we definitely would have seen it in the earlier images if nothing had changed," co-author Rick Perley, also of the NRAO, said in the same statement. "That means it must have turned on sometime between 1996 and now."

Additional observations made in 2016 by the radio telescopes of the Very Long Baseline Array, which is also located in New Mexico, detected the object as well.
Infrared images captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and Hawaii's Keck Observatory between 1994 and 2002 show a faint object in the same spot within Cygnus A. This mysterious body had originally been interpreted as a clump of stars, but the recent and dramatic brightening is forcing a rethink, study team members said.
There are only two viable possibilities that could explain the new observations, the researchers added: The object is either a supernova or a supermassive black hole in outburst mode.

The team favors the black-hole hypothesis, because no known type of supernova could stay so bright for so long, the researchers said. The second supermassive black hole probably became so active after stumbling onto a lot of material to gobble up — perhaps a star that strayed too close, or gas stirred up by the galaxy merger, the researchers said.
"Further observations will help us resolve some of these questions," said study lead author Daniel Perley, of the Astrophysics Research Institute of Liverpool John Moores University in England (and Rick Perley's son). "In addition, if this is a secondary black hole, we may be able to find others in similar galaxies."
The new study has been accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.
A UFO has been videoed hovering over Cley Hill near Frome.
The video, taken by a Frome resident, shows a streak of light circling over the National Trust owned land in Corsley.
Located at the edge of the Longleat Estate in Warminster, Cley Hill has long been thought of as a hot spot for UFOs.
The resident who took this video believes this streak of light could be one such UFO – although he is a little sceptical.
Speaking to Somerset Live, he said: “I took this video from my house in Frome last night. It was over the Cley Hill area I think, which is always a hotspot for UFOs”
“Probably a drone with a fancy flame effect tail or something. It's been spotted a few times locally.”
The Frome resident thinks the streak of light could have been created by a drone
For more than 40 years, this lofty hilltop has been a meeting place for UFO spotters, all drawn by talk of lights, flying objects and what have been described as ‘other unidentifiable oddities’.
Nigel Vile, a local rambler, regularly goes on walks around the area.
Speaking of the hill, he said: “Some experts have gone as far as to describe the nearby town of Warminster as Britain’s UFO capital on account of a phenomena first encountered in the mid-1960s that became known as the ‘Warminster Thing’.
“Strange noises were heard in the skies above the town, and an equally strange shimmering light was observed in the vicinity.”
It’s not just in Warminster that these UFOs are spotted, however. There are many towns around Frome that have similar experiences.
This crop circle was spotted near Cley Hill recently
Nigel said: “More recently, a report in the local press recorded the experiences of a number of people who witnessed a UFO in the skies in June 2001.
“A slow-moving bright light was spotted at Semington which was buzzed by an aircraft. Later, a number of people in Trowbridge saw an object comprised of three lights in a triangular formation heading west towards Warminster.
“As one critic noted, however, considering the proximity of the military training area on Salisbury Plain, was it not more likely that the UFOs people have been seeing during the past 50 years or so are more attributable to military activity rather than visits by alien life forms?”

Cley Hill can be found just off the A36 heading towards Longleat. It is more than 800ft in height and is surrounded by relatively flat agricultural land. At the top of the hill are the remains of a Bronze Age hillfort that encloses two round barrows.

Superaarde ontdekt op ‘steenworp’ afstand. Bestaat hier leven?
Superaarde ontdekt op ‘steenworp’ afstand. Bestaat hier leven?
