Earth Faces an Increased Risk of Being Hit by an Asteroid, Astronomers Warn

Earth may be threatened by a newly discovered branch of a stream of meteoroids, increasing the risk that the planet will be struck by a meteoroid or asteroid. A team of astronomers from the Czech Academy of Sciences announced the findings on Tuesday after studying the Taurid meteoroid stream. The stream produces a meteor shower that usually has a long period of activity in October and November and produces a low number of meteors. The meteors — light phenomena that are seen when a meteoroid enters the planet’s atmosphere and vaporizes, also referred to as “shooting stars” — occur when Earth’s orbit plows into the stream of debris left behind by Comet Encke. Most of these particles are quite tiny and pose no threat whatsoever, but the Czech astronomers have tracked a new branch of the stream from which particles are intersecting with the planet. The branch includes two asteroids with diameters of between 200 and 300 meters (roughly 650-1000 feet). These asteroids are not themselves on a collision course with Earth, but their identification suggests that there may be other asteroids of this size or larger lurking undiscovered within this stream. As such, the astronomers are urging a concentrated search for more Taurid asteroids, to see if any potentially threatening ones exist. “Since asteroids of sizes of tens to hundreds meters pose a threat to the ground even if they are intrinsically weak, impact hazard increases significantly when the Earth encounters the Taurid new branch every few years,” they write in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. “Further studies leading to [a] better description of this real source of potentially hazardous objects, which can be large enough to cause significant regional or even continental damage on the Earth, are therefore extremely important.” It’s worth noting, however, that no threatening objects have yet been discovered.Though the prospect of continental damage and regional catastrophe coming from space is alarming, more observations will be needed before drawing conclusions based on the Czech team’s research.
NASA is regularly working to anticipate the possible collision of a massive cosmic particle with Earth and assess any potential impact risks. It operates a collision monitoring system called Sentry that routinely scans for asteroids and determines the likelihood of impact over the next 100 years. It also freely catalogs these rocky bodies at the JPL Small-Body Database Browser. The debris stream from Comet Encke is influenced in part by the gravity of Jupiter, a massive gas giant planet that is known to influence the orbits of comets and asteroids in that region of the solar system. As such, from time Jupiter’s gravity can redirect the debris so that more particles hit the Earth.

Credit: NASADuring one of these “enhanced” Taurid meteor showers in 2015 caused by Encke’s redirection, the astronomers from the Czech Academy of Sciences analyzed 144 Taurid fireballs — meteors that produce a large flash when they hit the atmosphere. Observations were taken from the European Fireball Network. Of the analyzed fireballs, about 113 of them have common characteristics, including sharing approximately the same orbit. The astronomers concluded, based on previous showers, that these fireballs come from a new branch of the Taurid stream being redirected by Jupiter’s gravity.
Next, the astronomers analyzed the orbital paths of asteroids 2015 TX24 and 2005 UR. Due to their similarities to the newly discovered path of the Taurid fireballs, the astronomers in turn argued that these two asteroids — each about 200-300 meters in diameter — are also members of the new branch. Analysis of the fireballs suggests that the large asteroids are weak in structure, although at larger sizes they would not break up easily in the Earth’s atmosphere. A few years ago, NASA created a Planetary Defense Coordination Office to bring together the observations of all US networks looking for near-Earth asteroids, and to help come up with plans in the unlikely chance that the Earth is under threat. The fireball was said to be so big it was visible in skies above Maryland, Washing DC and Virginia, US.
In the clip, filmed on a driver’s dashboard camera, the mysterious sphere lights up the night sky as it rockets past.
Two people inside the car simultaneously gasp and say “wow” as the glowing orb emerges.
It quickly loses its glow, with the sky descending back into darkness.

BIZARRE: There were more than 100 reported UFO sightings in Maryland
The bizarre burst of light was thought to be a shooting star but was later determined to be a meteor.
It appears bright because it is burning up as it passes through Earth’s atmosphere.
This fireball or meteor was reported to the American Meteor Society 28 times.
If a fireball or meteor were to reach Earth's surface, it would be called a meteorite.
Small meteors pass through our atmosphere almost every day, but most go undetected.
But UFO hunters believe this isn’t the first time the sky above Maryland has been visited by an unknown object.
There were actually six UFO sightings reported in Maryland in December alone last year, with four more in January 2017 alone.

STUNNED: The drivers couldn't believe their eyes
There were more than 100 UFO sightings clocked over the last year according to the National UFO Reporting Centre.
One of the most widely reported, over picturesque Chesapeake Bay on the US East Coast, was said to be bright burning lights speeding through the sky in a triangular shape.
“It was very bright, pulsating and moving at incredible speed, not an aircraft,” one witness reported.
In terms of revelations, it's not the most explosive. No aliens, secret NSA bases or stranded Matt Damons just yet. But slowly, with the aid of our remote robotic friend, our understanding of the Mars environment and how it came to be is getting clearer.
Since arriving on the red planet back in 2012, the rover has been drilling, analysing and collecting data on the ground it covers. This include its landing area, dubbed "Mount Sharp", as well as "Pahrump Hills" and "Confidence Hills", among others.
The minerals found in the four samples drilled near the base of Mount Sharp suggest several different environments were present in ancient Gale Crater. There is evidence for waters with different pH and variably oxidizing conditions. The minerals also show that there were multiple source regions for the rocks in "Pahrump Hills" and "Marias Pass."
It goes on to mention the Mount Sharp samples point to a "primitive magma source ... rich in iron and magnesium, similar to basalts in Hawaii", while those take higher contained "silica-rich minerals ... [and] minerals similar to quartz".
Curiosity even found a mineral called "tridymite", which was somewhat perplexing:
Tridymite is found on Earth, for example, in rocks that formed from partial melting of Earth's crust or in the continental crust — a strange finding because Mars never had plate tectonics.
And that's not all. Clay minerals appeared at Confidence Hills and Mojave 2, along with jarosite, which "indicates that there were acidic fluids at some point in time in this region".
In addition, the presence of hematite and magnetite has provided scientists information about water on Mars:
Hematite contains oxidized iron, whereas magnetite contains both oxidized and reduced forms of iron. The type of iron-oxide mineral present may tell scientists about the oxidation potential of the ancient waters.
When considered together, NASA has a more solid picture of a Mars that was "once really wet, but now is dry and cold", according to mission scientist Elizabeth Rampe. It might be a while before we have a definitive history of Mars' ancient waterways, but coming up to its fifth anniversary on the planet, Curiosity continues to do good work.

When flying saucers visit Earth they are immediately blasted out of the sky by all the military resources we can throw at it – Well, that’s the Hollywood way of dealing with things.
In reality, how would we deal with the prospect of alien visitations? It’s a question that has taunted us for decades, and a range of scenarios run from the plausible to the outright incredible.
On the possibility of direct attack, Professor Stephen Hawking claims ET contact is dangerous, because they ‘may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria’.
The Debate

Theoretical physicist, Michio Kaku warns:
If they are hostile, it would be like Bambi meeting Godzilla if we ever had to fight them…we would present no military challenge to such an advanced civilisation…We would be a pushover for them. Forget all the Hollywood movies.
Ryan Sprague, the author of Somewhere in the Skies notes that so far UFOs don’t seem to represent an alien threat to humanity:
It would appear that we’ve been so aggressively conditioned to believe an invasion would be catastrophic and benevolent beyond comprehension, that any advanced civilisation would come to our planet with an agenda of taking over and using our resources to it’s advantage.
While I can understand this pessimistic view, the decades and decades of possible alien visitation here on the planet already, and the countless UFO sightings throughout the world, would indicate that if they were to do such a thing, they would have done it already.
Could Aliens Even Reach Earth?
UFO sceptic Robert Sheaffer isn’t too concerned about the threat of an alien invasion either, he says:
Well, I would worry about an alien invasion about as much as I would worry about a Zombie Apocalypse. Both are equally implausible.
First, any supposed alien invaders would have to find us. Given that they would be at least several light years away in some other solar system, and probably much farther than that, finding us and learning what earth is like is not so easy.
Second, they need to somehow get here, which is very difficult, even if we assume they have advanced technology, because fundamental physics tells us that they would need insanely large amounts of energy to accelerate space ships to relativistic speeds – and then to decelerate them when they arrive.
Even nuclear fusion power is woefully inefficient compared to what would be needed. If they are bringing along scary armaments and supplies, that’s just more mass to add to their armada.
Protection And The Lack Thereof

Whatever the facts of UFOs as alien invaders, what should we do to protect ourselves other than to have a tin foil hat at the ready?
The United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and their Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (CUPUOS) is not geared for such possibilities.
UNOOSA director Simonetta Di Pippo tells us:
UNOOSA and COPUOS Member States consider a range of space science and space exploration topics, fields in which the topic of astrobiology sits. However, the Office for Outer Space Affairs has been given no mandate by Member States to consider the question of potential advanced or intelligent extraterrestrial life.
For this reason there is no protocol or process for any contact by extraterrestrial life.
The Threat Of Artificial Intelligence
Michael Michaud author of ‘Contact with Alien Civilizations: Our Hopes and Fears about Encountering Extraterrestrials’ (2007) says we shouldn’t be concerned because as he observes in his book, ‘UFO advocates have not yet proven their thesis that some UFOs are visitors from other worlds. I also said that aliens stepping out of a spacecraft on the Earth may be the least likely form of contact.’
He goes on to wonder, ‘Why would extraterrestrials make such a long journey? If they are capable of interstellar flight, they won't need the Earth's territory or resources.’
Michael thinks, ‘A more likely scenario is a visit by an unmanned interstellar probe equipped with artificial intelligence. Intelligent machines don't need the massive spacecraft required to transport biological beings over vast distances, and they are patient.'
Invisible Defence In The War Of The Worlds

‘Assuming they do somehow get here,’ says Robert Sheaffer ‘presumably it is because they believe that they can live on our Earth, if they can only get rid of us. H.G. Wells was onto something when he had his fictional Martian invaders killed off by earthly microbes. Our bodies consist of not just 'us,' but an entire biome of separate organisms: the bacteria in our gut, microbes and mites living on our skin, etc.
Sheaffer adds:
It is doubtful that our bodies could survive in an entirely alien biosphere with different parasites, different foods, etc. The same problem would apply to any alien beings who might come here.
Sprague agrees that, ‘we simply can't even begin to comprehend their genetic make-up, whether or not they posses any type of progressive knowledge, or even if they harbour emotions, empathy, ethics, or morals.’
A Technological Gamble

Malcolm Robinson founder of Strange Phenomena Investigations (SPI) observes that situations of contact between human civilisations set a disturbing precedent:
We have learned that when any technological superior race gets involved with an inferior race the inferior race usually comes off worse (as the history of this planet has shown). We can only hope that when that day comes, when another technological race meets mankind it will not prove to be disastrous and to our disadvantage.
That is a good reason for not trying to send signals out to alien civilisations in our galaxy, but has the horse already bolted as our planet has already beamed radio messages out to celestial targets since 1962?
Michael Michaud says we shouldn’t worry:
The vast majority of those signals are too weak to reach the distance of the nearest star. As Frank Drake has pointed out, we actually are becoming less detectable because of changes in the way we use radio technology. The powerful one-time message he sent from Arecibo in 1974 was aimed at a distant star cluster, not at nearby stars.

Philip Mantle, Veteran UFO researcher, author and publisher at FLYING DISK PRESS , doesn’t think UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin, but says if we were invaded we would cope with the situation and ‘Mankind would hope to pull together as one to stand up to any such invasion.’
Sprague, is equally optimistic:
I believe that factions of the world would unite...and others would separate. Science and religion would be shattered overnight, but would continue.
Our hope would be to benefit and expand our own sciences and core beliefs by finding some way to communicate with this advanced civilisation.
What If We Don't Know We've Been Invaded?

Neuro-psychologist, Gabriel G. De la Torre, professor at the University of Cádiz thinks there is a distinct possibility of aliens visiting, but says:
I am not sure we will be fully conscious about it. The main problem in this topic is it has been approached in a very simplistic way.
I don't think we can be a real problem for Cosmos in any way. It is more probable we may be researched rather than destroyed.
Stealth is a possible approach, however I can not imagine an equal to equal agreement with people of Earth....I don't think we could even understand their strategy.

As to whether they might secretly manipulate humanity, Gabriel says:
I think this could actually happen even without humans noticing...
If they conform to another consciousness state of mind they could try to operate in our belief systems and consciousness in a subtle way until a more physical approach is convenient for both sides of the communication process. This could be a gradual process.
Even in the radio message approach, this may happen. I don't believe they will exchange codes, numbers and pictures in the same way we are trying to do. These messages if they happen anytime will have a deeply rooted message direct to our own consciousness.

It will be both enlightening and wonderful which may change not just our technology but medicine and the way we look at ourselves in the cosmos. As a researcher into the UFO enigma I look forward with anticipation to that day which I hope will be in my lifetime.
So with bacteria, unity, perhaps a little humility, the prospect of an alien invasion needn't necessarily strike fear into our hearts. It could be the driving force behind bigger and better things.
Strange mysteries seem to gravitate to some places, and oddness and enigmas gather about them like flies to a rotting corpse. Here in these realms of the strange we can find a mish-mash of legends, myths, and real cases of the unexplained, perhaps all of it congealing together into some vague idea of what the truth may be. One place that has proved to be ground zero for some truly bizarre stories is a mountain that lies in one of the most beautiful spots in Europe, and which perhaps cloaks its real, sinister nature in a veneer of natural magnificence.
Located amongst the Berchtesgaden Alps, which straddle the border between Berchtesgaden, Germany and Salzburg, Austria and looming over the Salzburg Basin and Salzach Valley a table-top mountain, technically a massif, known as the Untersberg, which directly translates to “under-mountain.” Most famous for its lopsided shape and for being featured in the beloved musical film The Sound of Music, and rising around 1,973 meters (6,473 feet) over its surrounding vistas, the mountain has a commanding presence, and is a popular destination for tourists from nearby Salzburg, Austria, who come here to see the stunning natural splendor on display and enjoy a myriad of outdoor activities.
The Untersberg
This majestic formation, with its vast natural beauty, also has a range of strange legends associated with it, such as that it is the resting place of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (1122 – 1190), who is said to slumber there awaiting a resurrection that will herald the end of the world, and another well-known legend saying that the great king Charlemagne lives on or within the bowels of the mountain surrounded by dwarf-like creatures called Untersberger Mandln. Indeed the mountain has long been said to be inhabited by various demons, spirits, strange beasts, lost civilizations, and dwarf-like beings. It was legends such as these that allegedly drew the attention of Hitler, who by some accounts became absolutely obsessed with the mysterious mountain, building a house on the nearby Mt. Berghof, on the Austrian border, from which he purportedly fanatically watched the Untersberg with special high powered telescopes. It is said that he believed the mountain held supernatural energies and entities that he hoped to harness and tame for his own nefarious purposes.
Whether the mountain truly holds such paranormal secrets or not is unknown, but there certainly are various tales of high strangeness from here, often inextricably mixed in with the legends and lore, and the Untersberg has become known as a place very steeped in the world of the weird. One persistently reported phenomenon from here is that of missing time and suddenly finding oneself in a different area without any explanation, as if one has been spontaneously teleported. Hikers have reported losing consciousness and then waking up in an unfamiliar part of the mountain with minutes or hours missing and unaccounted for. In some of these odd reports the person has inexplicably travelled many miles away within the span of just a few minutes, and such tales have stirred up speculation including that the mountain holds vortices of some sort that have the power to teleport people, time warps, or that these are victims of alien abductions, which would be somewhat fitting considering the Untersberg is a hotspot for UFO sightings as well.
One of the weirdest stories concerning the anomalies of missing time and teleportation at Untersberg was described by the Austrian author calling himself Stan Wolf, his pen name, in a 2011 book titled Gems of Dominion: Mysterious Mount Untersberg, which would end up expanding to encompass a full 6 volumes. Wolf claimed that he actually went to the mountain with a friend and actively searched for these time slips, actually finding some locations where their watches would diverge by seconds or minutes. After exploring more of the area, Wolf says that they came across a group of men living in one of the many caves of the mountain, and that these people claimed to be SS soldiers from World War II, still young and under the command of the notorious SS general Hans Kammler. Bizarrely, the alleged soldiers appeared to have had no idea that so many years had passed, and seemed to truly believe that the war had ended only months before. Wolf then ascertains that the cave they had been hiding out in displays a major temporal anomaly, with time passing by at a much slower pace within its confines.
Wolf’s explanation for the time anomalies is every bit as far-out as the phenomena itself. He claims that in 1220, a group of the Knights Templar returning from a Crusade was in the wilds of Mesopotamia when they suddenly encountered an apparition in the form of the goddess Isais, who instructed them to build a dwelling upon the faraway Untersberg. The goddess then supposedly gave them strange black gems called “Gems of Dominion” to take with them. The knights did as they were told and constructed a temple for Isais within a cavern in the mountain, after which she would appear again with a series of prophecies and information concerning a variety of secret knowledge, such as the location of the Holy Grail. It is these Gems of Dominion that are said to have the power to slow down time, among various other abilities. It is important to note that while the books are presented as straight fiction, they are also advertised as based on true events, and the author himself cryptically suggests that they are the truth merely masquerading as fiction, saying:
Many things are too unfathomable to write them down like that. Perhaps they even should stay hidden, for the human mind accepts only what is familiar with. Therefore I am writing this book in the disguise of a novel. It is up to each reader to decide what he will acknowledge as true.
Is any of this book true, is it just a bunch of made-up nonsense, or a mixture of both? Who knows? Another idea is that these cases of purported temporal or spacial displacement might be due to numerous portals scattered about the mountain that supposedly lead to other realms or dimensions. The Germans apparently believed that such portals could be found in the mountain’s extensive cave networks, and indeed at the end of the war many of Hitler’s men are said to have retreated into these caves in order to escape to other dimensions, never to be seen again. Others have reported passing towns or villages that were not there when they returned, possibly glimpses into some other dimension.
Whatever is the cause of these phenomena, it could be linked to one of the biggest mysteries of the Untersberg, which is that of persistent vanishings that have supposedly occurred here, with hundreds of people allegedly having disappeared here to never be seen again. This apparently happens so often that newspapers of the region regularly carry stories of people who have gone missing on the mountain, such as the 2001 vanishing of 39-year-old Max Brandl, who on October 19 of that year parked his car along a hiking trail, set off on a walk, and never returned. An extensive, 7-month search combed the entire area and found not a single trace of the missing man. There is also the case of a young couple who vanished here in 2008, but could not be located despite intensive land and air searches. And on and on it goes, with the area considered to have a disproportional number of such disappearances. One idea is that these people have just fallen down into one of the many caves and caverns in the area, but others point to more mysterious forces at work.
Even more bizarre are the cases of missing people on the Untersberg who have vanished only to reappear later under strange and mysterious circumstances. One such account is that of a hunter named Michael Hulzogger, who in 1738 vanished into thin air on the mountain. Exactly one year later, the missing man came wandering up to his own memorial service in a dazed state. He apparently refused to tell anyone where he had been or what he had been through, finally agreeing to tell only the Archbishop Firman of Salzberg, who was so upset by what he heard that he reportedly resigned from his position and never spoke of it again.
An even stranger account is said to have taken place in 1858, when an entire wedding procession claimed that as they walked a mountain path on their way to the wedding reception, a rock wall opened up from which emerged an elderly, gray haired man who invited them to follow him. When the group went through the mysterious passage, they found themselves in a vast city under the mountain with a plenitude of gold, jewels, and luxurious surroundings. The party was treated to an opulent buffet of food and drink and then supposedly fell asleep. When they woke, they found themselves in different surroundings amongst people who spoke strangely and wore odd clothing. They made it back to the church where the wedding had taken place, but even this place seemed different and the priest was also a different person. When they told the priest what had happened and asked where the rest of the wedding was, but he had no idea of what they were talking about. The priest decided to look into it and found that a wedding procession had vanished in the area, but the most bizarre detail of all was that they had disappeared over a hundred years before.
One of the more recent and most well-known of these weird cases concerns a group of three tourists from Munich, including a married couple, disappeared while exploring on the mountain in 1987. The only trace of them found was their abandoned car, and supposedly no other sign of them was turned up despite a massive search. The missing people were considered to be just more victims of the mountain, but a full 3 months later relatives of the vanished group received a phone call from them explaining that they were on a ship in the Red Sea headed for Alexandria, Egypt. When asked where they had been during the previous 3 months, none of them seemed to have any idea of where they had been or why they were on that ship, and indeed they seemed to not even be aware that so much time had passed.
As much as it is a place of beauty and enchanting vistas, the Untersberg is also one of strange mysteries and unexplained phenomena. It is a place of myth, legend, and weirdness that may perhaps always be beyond our capability to comprehend. Whatever the answers to these various enigmas may be, this is a place still steeped in a mixture of legend, myth, and unexplained phenomena, a place as bizarre as it is beautiful.
A video making the rounds in the web last week shows the statement of a woman who claims she witnessed “strange signs” above Temple Mount in Jerusalem that she believes are holograms created by a machine placed on the mountain by the king of Jordan on behalf of CERN, the Large Hadron Collider. While there are plenty of holes in her testimony, the mention of Temple Mount and CERN gets a lot of attention. Is this the big one, Project Blue Beam, a hoax or something else?
The unidentified woman says her observation occurred a year ago on a visit to Temple Mount and she’s been researching it ever since to determine what she saw and, now that she believes she’s found the answer, to warn the world. The first image she shares is what looks like a common ring cloud that she claims was over the Temple Mount for a few hours. She claimed the second image showed three suns, but the blue dot next to the sun looked like a lens flare and the third sun seems to be a hole in a cloud creating a rainbow. She also shows what she claims are beams of light going up from the Temple Mount to the sky.
At this point, she brings CERN into the picture. She claims that her concern about what she saw moved her to research similar unusual sightings. That’s where she connected Jordan’s King Abdullah II to CERN, a legitimate link since CERN indeed has a particle accelerator lab in Jordan called … get ready … SESAME, which stands for The Synchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East, which coincidentally just opened in May 2017. As she mentions, CERN is also opening labs in other countries. At that point, she makes references to “God’s Atom,” conspiracies, chemtrails and holograms, some of which seemed to be hinted at by the person interviewing her and reinforced by images added later.
That brings us to the source of the video. ‘Round SaturnsEye’ or R$E is a YouTube channel run by David Bass. Bass is a British TV Presenter, writer, satirist and filmmaker based in London. The first dichotomy here is that someone in the TV and film business runs a website which professes that all of “the media, the celebrity culture, and the movies” is a “false projection” of a false god. R$E videos are frequently about the end times or the anti-christ and seem to tie everything wrong in the world to … you guessed it … CERN. R$E tries to depict itself as some sort of ministry and the videos are meant to lead viewers to the “truth.”
CERN doesn’t need any help in scaring people but this video by R$E doesn’t present much of case that a ring cloud and rainbow are CERN-generated holograms beamed as a test or warning of anything. It seems more likely that it was created to fulfill David Bass’ and R$E’s main purpose, which is $.
VIDEOAstronomen hebben gewaarschuwd voor een onverklaarbare verhoogde komeetactiviteit in de buurt van onze planeet. In een geanimeerde video die deze week gelanceerd werd, toont Nasa hoe 10 potentieel gevaarlijke asteroïden de aarde bedreigen.
De beelden komen van Neowise, het ruimteagentschap van NASA dat verantwoordelijk is voor het opsporen van asteroïden. Wetenschappers hebben het afgelopen jaar 10 nieuwe potentieel gevaarlijke asteroïden ontdekt, samen met 96 andere kometen. De experts die de gegevens analyseerden spreken van een onverklaarde toename in komeetactiviteit. "Het risico stijgt dat de aarde zal botsen met een asteroïde van de meteorietenregen Taurids", aldus Tsjechische astronomen.
Zij ontdekten een nieuwe tak van Taurids met minstens twee asteroïden van ongeveer 200 tot 300 meter diameter. De Tsjechische Academie voor Wetenschappen meldt in een persbericht: "Heel waarschijnlijk schuilen in deze tak verschillende asteroïden met een diameter van tientallen meters die we nu niet kunnen zien. Het gevaar op een crash met een asteroïde groeit elke keer dat de planeet aarde deze stroom tegenkomt. Deze nieuwe tak van Taurids beweegt rond de zon en de aarde kruist deze om de paar jaar gedurende een periode van ongeveer drie weken. Tijdens deze periode neemt de kans op een botsing met een groter object aanzienlijk toe."
NASA geeft toe dat deze asteroïden erg kwetsbaar zijn, maar wanneer ze zo groot als deze exemplaren zijn, kunnen ze diep in de atmosfeer binnendringen. Dan wordt de kans op een crash met de aarde reëel.
'Near Earth Object' (NEO) of 'Aardscheerder' is een komeet of asteroïde die uit koers raakt door de aantrekkingskracht van de planeten in ons zonnesysteem, hierdoor komen ze in de buurt van de aarde. Sinds de oprichting van Neowise in december 2013 werden 693 NEO's gevonden, 114 van hen zijn nieuw. Zo werden al verschillende asteroïden ontdekt die een risico vormen voor onze planeet, dit hangt voornamelijk af van hun grootte en hun baan. Een voorbeeld: de 2015 BN509 die in februari rakelings langs de aarde scheerde. Dat kende toen een goede afloop, maar wetenschappers waarschuwen dat de asteroïde kan terugkomen.

De Amerikaanse president Eisenhower wilde tijdens zijn regeerperiode informatie inwinnen over het geheime genootschap Majestic 12 en buitenaardse projecten in de omgeving van Area 51.
Dat stelde een vermeende ex-CIA-agent die anoniem wilde blijven. De agent werd naar eigen zeggen samen met zijn chef naar de basis gestuurd om een boodschap over te brengen.
De boodschap luidde dat de president Area 51 en de nabijgelegen basis S-4 onder militair toezicht zou stellen als zijn verzoek niet zou worden ingewilligd.

Deze uitspraken werden gedaan tijdens een interview waarin de 77-jarige man duidelijk in beeld was, maar niet bij naam werd genoemd.
Het interview is opgenomen in 2013, maar op verschillende UFO-fora wordt er momenteel over gediscussieerd. Het is niet duidelijk of de man nog leeft.
Schrijver Richard Dolan interviewde de man, die zei dat hij last had van nierproblemen en mogelijk nog maar enkele maanden te leven had. Hij wilde zijn geheimen ‘niet meenemen in zijn graf’.
Opgeroepen
Hij vertelde hoe hij in 1958 door de CIA in Langley werd gerekruteerd om zich te verdiepen in het onderwerp buitenaards leven.
Het was zijn taak om documenten van een vliegbasis in Fort Belvoir over UFO’s en buitenaardsen te onderzoeken.
De man zei dat hij in 1958 samen met zijn baas werd opgeroepen door president Eisenhower.
Roswell
De president, die op dat moment werd vergezeld door vicepresident Nixon, vertelde het tweetal dat hij informatie probeerde op te diepen over buitenaards leven en bepaalde technologieën.
Volgens Eisenhower ‘zou Majestic 12 dat uitzoeken, maar werd hij niet op de hoogte gehouden’.
In Area 51 en S-4 zou de CIA-agent verschillende hangars hebben gezien met buitenaardse toestellen, waaronder de UFO die bij Roswell was neergekomen.
Grey
In S-4 zou hij bovendien levende buitenaardsen hebben gezien, waaronder een Grey die door zijn baas werd geïnterviewd.
Eenmaal terug in het Witte Huis, waar ook FBI-directeur J. Edgar Hoover was aangeschoven, vertelden de twee wat ze hadden gezien.

In de nacht van 1 op 2 juni is een reusachtige graancirkel ontstaan in Frankrijk. De formatie, die zich bevindt nabij Sancerre, bestaat uit een aantal cirkels waarvan de grootste een doorsnee heeft van ongeveer een halve kilometer.
De graancirkel, net buiten Crézancy-en-Sancerre, trok veel bekijks. Eén van de bezoekers was Didier Chaumien, die besloot met zijn gezin de formatie te bewonderen.
“We hebben nog nooit zoiets gezien in de regio,” vertelde hij aan zender France 3. “Je vraagt je af hoe zoiets wordt gedaan. Nergens zijn sporen achtergelaten. Waanzinnig dit!”
Aangifte
Boer Jean-Paul Millet, de eigenaar van het weiland waarin de graancirkel is verschenen, was minder onder de indruk. Hij heeft aangifte gedaan.
“Het gaat hier om een gebied van één hectare, oftewel een oogst van zes ton,” zei hij tegen Le Journal du Centre.
Eerder
Hij schat dat de cirkels hem een schadepost van ongeveer 1000 euro zullen opleveren. “Ik zie hier het nut niet van in,” aldus de boze boer.
In Frankrijk zijn eerder graancirkels verschenen. In 2012 werden er formaties gevonden in de departementen Nièvre en Loiret en in 2009 werd er één gemeld nabij de stad Bourges.

Wij denken dat er simpelweg een onweerswolk in de lucht hangt, waar dreigende bliksemflitsen in heen en weer dansen.
Echter, soms is dit niet zomaar een onweerswolk, maar één die wordt gebruikt als dimensieportaal voor UFO’s om zo naar verre oorden in ons universum te kunnen reizen.
Wanneer je belangstelling hebt voor UFO's, dan heb je dat waarschijnlijk ook voor de mogelijke manieren waarop deze zich razendsnel kunnen verplaatsen en er bestaan dan ook verschillende theorieën.
Eén van de geopperde mogelijkheden is dat deze ruimteschepen interdimensionaal reizen en daarbij gebruikmaken van een soort dimensiepoorten.
Op dit moment gaan er opnames de wereld rond, waarin precies dat fenomeen te zien is.
Het gaat om een enorme UFO die tevoorschijn komt vanuit een dreigende onweerswolk.
Het is een grote onweerswolk en door de niet aflatende bliksem is de UFO heel goed zichtbaar.
Het is jammer genoeg niet duidelijk waar dit voorval zich heeft voorgedaan of wanneer, maar desalniettemin is het indrukwekkend.
De afgelopen jaren schreven we regelmatig over vreemde wolken die af en toe aan de hemel verschijnen en waar met de regelmaat van de klok UFO’s in en uit vliegen.
Wanneer je dan beelden ziet zoals wij die regelmatig laten zien, waarbij onbekende vliegende objecten met enorme snelheid verdwijnen in een soort onweerswolk om er vervolgens niet meer uit te komen, dan is het niet zo vreemd om te veronderstellen dat we hier te maken hebben met een dimensieportaal.
Een toegangspoort die door buitenaardsen wordt gebruikt om met hun UFO’s op aarde aan te komen en/of te vertrekken, waardoor ze via die poorten de normale beperkingen van tijd en ruimte omzeilen en zo in "no time" andere delen van ons universum kunnen bereiken.
Een wormgat, ook bekend als een Einstein-Rosen brug, is een hypothetische mogelijkheid om binnen de ruimtetijd sneller dan het licht te reizen. In de normale ruimte kan men tussen twee punten niet sneller reizen dan het licht, maar volgens de theorie van een wormgat bestaat er een "korte weg" in het universum. Langs deze korte weg is het dan mogelijk om sneller naar een ander punt in de ruimte te reizen dan wanneer je zou "omreizen" over de normale weg, ook al zou je dat doen met de snelheid van het licht.
De term wormgat werd bedacht door de Amerikaanse theoretisch natuurkundige John Wheeler in 1957, maar het idee van wormgaten was al getheoretiseerd in 1921 door de Duitse wiskundige Hermann Weyl in verband met zijn analyse van de massa in termen van het elektromagnetisch veld.
De naam wormgat komt van de analogie die vroeger gebruikt werd om dit uit te leggen: beeld je in dat het universum de schil van een appel is, en een worm van de éne zijde van de appel naar de andere zijde wil geraken. Als de worm op de schil van de appel blijft is de kortste afstand de helft van de omtrek van de appel. Maar als de worm in plaats van rond te gaan, een gat (wormgat) graaft recht door de appel, is de afstand merkbaar minder, namelijk de diameter van de appel.
Dit zou dan ook verklaren hoe het kan dat buitenaardsen in een oogwenk naar andere planeten kunnen reizen.
Naast de vele voorbeelden die we hebben gezien met vreemde wolken, zijn er ook aanwijzingen dat ze dergelijke wormgaten gebruiken net buiten de atmosfeer in de ruimte rondom onze planeet.
Er komen regelmatig verhalen van mensen die bepaalde flitsen waarnemen aan de hemel. Het duurt maar kort en ze bestrijken ook maar een klein deel van de hemel. Omdat het zo snel gaat, is dit fenomeen ook heel moeilijk vast te leggen.
Degene die dat wel is gelukt, of die het gelukt is dit fenomeen op NASA beelden te vinden, is de bekende Youtube gebruiker Streetcap1.
Het zijn allemaal geen geïsoleerde incidenten. Ook in februari dit jaar schreven wij over een dergelijk voorval in Argentinië.
De opname is enkele dagen geleden gemaakt bij de Zárate-Brazo Largo brug die aan de rand van de Argentijnse stad Buenos Aires ligt.
Al jaren schrijven wij nu over vreemde wolken die niet thuis horen in een bepaald landschap. Onderstaand een dergelijke wolk. Wat ook iedere keer weer kenmerkend is, zijn de bliksemflitsen in de wolk. Alsof je een grote onweerswolk hebt, maar dat eigenlijk niet is.
In de korte video zie je diverse UFO’s ronddartelen waarvan er een aantal met enorme snelheid verdwijnen in de wolk.
Na ongeveer zes seconden zie je er zo één linksboven in beeld verschijnen zoals ook te zien is op de volgende afbeelding.
En wanneer zo’n UFO de wolk in vliegt, ontstaat er op diezelfde plek een bliksemschicht. Wanneer je goed kijkt, dan zie je dat diverse keren gebeuren in die korte video.
De volgende opname is uniek, omdat het ook een bevestiging is van wat verschillende getuigen hebben gezien en van eerder gemaakte en vergelijkbare beelden.
"I was tracking a Fokker Friendship flying from Adelaide to Kingscote on Kangaroo Island," he said.
As the radar slowly turned, Mr Potter said it also pinged a large object near Port Lincoln.
He said this second craft appeared much larger than anything he had seen at that time.
"As the Fokker tracked towards Kangaroo Island, a smaller echo, much smaller than the Fokker, appeared to leave the large echo and fly in a line directly towards the [plane]."
He watched the two signals meet over the skies of Rapid Bay, south of Adelaide, and then saw the smaller object return to the larger one.
Each radar rotation took five seconds to complete.
"With one rotation of the radar antennae, that large echo had moved 70 nautical miles to the north-east," Mr Potter recalled.
"In the next pass it had disappeared off the screen completely."

I was recently in Quintana Roo Mexico and on 5/18/7 observed what appeared to be a metal object 3 to 5 miles off the coast moving in an erratic manner and not like any known aircraft I’d seen. A vivid reflection is what made me notice the tiny object. I watched the object for roughly 60 to 90 seconds before filming the attached video. I immediately knew it was odd and called to my wife to come and look. Before I could turn the recorder back on it moved upwards and disappeared. I’m usually not out looking for videos to post but wanted others to see what I’d seen and judge for themselves.

Mr Symington revealed in a never before seen footage that he was a witness to the one of the biggest ever mass UFO sightings in the world, and he believed it was extra-terrestrial.
The incident remains one of the most puzzling UFO sightings with thousands of witnesses on record. The strange event happened on March 13, 1997, when many had seen large triangular UFOs drifting over Arizona and Phoenix with sizes that varied from a Boeing 747 to multiple football fields.
Mr Symington made the revelation in 2006 in an interview with UFO investigator James Fox, who just released the never before seen footage from the interview to coincide the 20th anniversary of the unusual mass event.
In the recently released footage, Mr Symington states he believes the UFO sighting went all the way up to the Pentagon. He says that they called the Pentagon and thought the latter knew there had been sightings but not talking about it.
According to official Air Force explanation, the UFOs were just flares, which Mr Symington described as a total bunk. Mr Symington notes that he has seen high-altitude flares and there is no way those lights were flares.

In 1901, Tesla published an article in Collier’s Weekly detailing his experiments with electrical currents. He claims he experienced unexplained disturbances in electrical signals, and concludes that the source may have been extraterrestrials trying to communicate.
He wrote, “It was some time afterward when the thought flashed upon my mind that the disturbances I had observed might be due to an intelligent control. Although I could not decipher their meaning, it was impossible for me to think of them as having been entirely accidental. The feeling is constantly growing on me that I had been the first to hear the greeting of one planet to another.”
A Norwegian Engineer Heard Its Signal Transmissions
In 1927, amateur Norwegian radio operator Jørgen Hals discovered long delayed echoes (LDEs), which are echoes of short-wave transmissions. He couldn’t figure out what was causing the LDEs, and neither could anyone else; scientists still don’t know what causes them. One theory is that these echoes were the same signals Tesla heard—and they were coming from intelligent beings in space.
Tesla and Hals both heard radio signals they attributed to intelligent beings from space, but in 1960, Ronald Bracewell took things a step further by publishing a theory on how other life forms might try to communicate with us. According to Bracewell, they would fill a probe or satellite with all the information they wanted to communicate and launch it into space. The probe would then seek civilizations capable of interpreting its messages.
Such a probe is necessary because it can travel great distances, and would need to get close to whichever planet it was trying to communicate with in order to transmit its messages. Were the transmissions Tesla and Hals heard coming from such a satellite?
In 1954, reports emerged that Dr. Lincoln LaPaz of the University of New Mexico spotted two satellites orbiting the Earth. LaPaz denied the claims, but it’s possible the government was trying to cover up the sighting.
Clyde Tombaugh, famed astronomer who discovered Pluto, was at UNM with Lincoln LaPaz during the supposed Black Satellite sighting. Tombaugh and LaPaz were doing secret research for the military on the existence of alien satellites and the origins of other unexplained phenomena. Tombaugh also denied the satellite reports, but in a much more cryptic manner than his colleague.
A Famed UFOlogist Backed the “Two Satellites” Theory

The first satellite released into space, Sputnik 1, was launched by Russia in October 1957. In 1954, three years before Sputnik, retired Marine Corps Major Donald Keyhoe claimed that two satellites were orbiting Earth, and that Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott had personally seen one of them. Talbott denied the claims. Keyhoe was a UFO expert who wrote several nonfiction books on the subject and was taken quite seriously as a journalist.
In February 1960, several magazines and newspapers reported on a mysterious satellite detected by the US military. No one knew where it came from. In March 1960, Time magazine claimed that the object was a retrorocket from a Discoverer satellite. See, when a satellite returns to Earth, it fires a retrorocket to slow its descent; the retrorocket has a parachute, and is supposed to be picked up by scout planes as it falls.
According to Time, when this particular Discoverer launched its retrorocket in August 1959, it disappeared, and no one noticed it orbiting for five months, even though the Department of Defense (DOD) employed people whose sole responsibility was monitoring objects in space. These DOD employees used a radar detector dubbed “Dark Fence” to help alert them to objects orbiting over the US. Here’s how Time explained the blunder:
“Instead of slowing the recovery capsule and bringing it down, the rocket’s thrust had increased the capsule’s speed and put it in a different and higher orbit, where it circled for five months before the still-inexperienced Dark Fence watchers noticed it. With this experience behind them. the space watchers could be expected to do better the next time a silent, unknown satellite starts criss-crossing the sky.”
With that stellar explanation, it’s no wonder some people believe Time’s story was a cover-up.
Some claim that, in 1963, astronaut Gordon Cooper saw a UFO cut across the sky while on the Mercury 9 space flight over Perth, Australia. Reports indicate the object was also seen on the radar at Muchea Tracking Station, outside Perth. Cooper has explicitly denied these claims, but others are convinced he was coerced into silence.
In 1974, Scottish astronomy writer Duncan Lunan purported to have decoded the LDEs Jørgen Hals heard in the ’20s. Lunan claimed they were a map of star system Epsilon Boötis. Could the message have come from aliens on a planet in the Epsilon Boötis system?
It’s More Than 13,000 Years Old

There’s only one problem with Duncan Lunan’s decoded map theory: Arcturus, a bright star from the Boötes constellation, where the Epsilon Boötis system is located, was in the wrong place when checked against star charts. Lunan did some research and discovered that Arcturus had once been located where the map claimed it was—13,000 years ago. This means the probe must have been launched more than 13,000 years ago, when Arcturus was still in that position.
On a 1998 mission, the Endeavor space shuttle captured a picture of something floating outside the craft. NASA wrote it off as a lost thermal blanket, but others contend it seems too rigid to be a blanket.
It Has Visited Earth
In August 2015, footage emerged from Jacksonville, FL showing a mysterious object hovering in the sky. It looked suspiciously like the object in the photo from the Endeavor, and some claim that it’s the Black Knight satellite.
Pepsi Made a Movie Blaming the Government for Covering Up Knowledge of the Black Knight (WTF?)
In 2015, Pepsi released a short film entitled Black Knight Decoded. The story follows characters played by David Oyelowo and Freida Pinto as they decode transmissions from the Black Knight satellite and release them to the world. Throughout the short, the government tries desperately to shut the operation down.
Does the government actually know something about the Black Knight? Maybe, but take this evidence with a grain of salt: it was written and produced by noted liar James Frey. Also, it’s basically just an extended music video for an Usher song. And was made by Pepsi.
It Was Spotted Near the International Space Station
In January 2016, footage from the International Space Station (ISS) showed an object that looks suspiciously like the Black Knight satellite floating nearby. NASA provided no explanation for the mystery object. Is is Sandra Bullock? Did they leave her up there after shooting Gravity? Or could it be the Black Knight satellite
Philip K Dick, author of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was adapted into Blade Runner, kept a journal, in which he documented his experiences with an extraterrestrial being. Parts of this journal were published in a collection called The Exegesis, which included detailed passages about recurring hallucinations Dick experienced. These visions involved an entity he called the Vast Active Living Intelligence System (VALIS). Dick claimed VALIS was a satellite, the sole purpose of which was to act as a communication tool between humans and extraterrestrial beings. Sound familiar?
No one has been able to pinpoint when these sighting and stories started to coalesce into the Black Knight satellite theory; similarly, no one knows where the name “Black Knight” came from. Some speculate it was taken from a British rocket, but it’s never been proven.

Titan verdient een tweede bezoekje van de mensheid. Maar wat is nu het ideale transportmiddel op Titan? Een luchtballon? Of een boot?
We vinden Titan in de nabijheid van gasreus Saturnus. De maan is met een diameter van 5175 kilometer groter dan onze maan en zelfs groter dan de kleinste planeet in ons zonnestelsel: Mercurius. Maar het is niet de omvang die deze maan zo bijzonder maakt. Nee: de maan trekt de aandacht met zijn atmosfeer. Titan is de enige maan in het zonnestelsel met een dikke atmosfeer die tot zo’n 600 kilometer ver de ruimte in reikt. Die atmosfeer bestaat voornamelijk uit stikstof en methaan. Hoog in de atmosfeer worden de methaan- en stikstofmoleculen opgesplitst door het ultraviolette licht van de zon en daarbij ontstaan organische moleculen. Dat zijn moleculen die koolstof en waterstof bevatten, maar vaak ook stikstof, zuurstof en andere elementen die belangrijk zijn voor het leven zoals wij dat kennen. Met het oog op die bouwblokken van leven vermoeden onderzoekers dat de omstandigheden die nu op Titan een rol spelen, vergelijkbaar zijn met de omstandigheden op aarde, miljoenen jaren voordat het leven op aarde ontstond.

Valleien, duinen en cryovulkanen Terwijl in de atmosfeer van alles gebeurt, is ook het oppervlak van de maan allesbehalve saai. Er bevinden zich rivieren en meren die gevuld zijn met vloeibaar methaan en ethaan. Ook zijn er duintjes te vinden. Deze bestaan niet uit zand, maar uit koolwaterstoffen. Daarnaast lijkt de maan ook cryovulkanen te herbergen. Deze vulkanen spuwen geen lava, maar water. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, lijkt het er sterk op dat op de maan ook sprake is van tektonische activiteit.
Leven? Er gebeurt dus een hoop op Titan. Maar ontstaan zo ook omstandigheden die gunstig zijn voor leven? Wetenschappers zijn verdeeld. Titan is koud: het is er zo’n -178 graden Celsius. Hierdoor gaan de chemische reacties die nodig zijn voor leven zoals wij dat kennen, langzaam. En ook vloeibaar water is er op Titan dus niet – of hooguit kortstondig, bijvoorbeeld in smeltwatermeren die ontstaan na een inslag – te vinden. En water is cruciaal voor het leven zoals wij dat kennen. Dergelijke levensvormen lijken op Titan dus geen kans te hebben. Anders is het wellicht voor wat onderzoekers ‘exotische levensvormen’ noemen: levensvormen die andere elementen gebruiken dan het leven op aarde.
HET EERSTE BEZOEKJE
De mensheid is al eens op Titan geweest. Begin 2005 landde Huygens op het oppervlak van de maan. Het levert spectaculaire beelden op. Maar de lander is maar kort actief: na 72 minuten is de batterij leeg.
Laten we naar Titan gaan Al met al valt er dus nog genoeg te ontdekken op Titan. Maar dat betekent wel dat we ernaar toe moeten gaan. De dikke atmosfeer van de maan onttrekt het oppervlak aan het zicht, waardoor observaties vanuit een baan rond de maan of Saturnus hun beperkingen hebben. We moeten echt het oppervlak van de maan op gaan zoeken om meer over Titan te weten te komen. Maar hoe kunnen we dat nu het beste doen. Wetenschappers hebben daar al lang en breed over nagedacht en zijn in het verleden met de volgende voorstellen gekomen:

Met de luchtballon
Dankzij Huygens (zie kader) weten we dat de atmosfeer van Titan helder genoeg is om vanuit de lucht foto’s van het oppervlak te maken. Dus het is helemaal niet zo’n gek idee om Titan vanuit de lucht in kaart te brengen. Een ander voordeel van een luchtballon is dat deze naar allerlei delen van Titan kan vliegen en dus een groot deel van de maan kan bestuderen. Iets wat met behulp van een lander onmogelijk is. De ballon zou bovendien – zonder al te veel energie te verbruiken – meerdere jaren in de atmosfeer van Titan actief kunnen blijven.
Met de onderzeeër
De onderzeeër zou een kijkje kunnen nemen in het grootste meer dat Titan rijk is: Kraken Mare. Dit meer is zo’n 1000 kilometer lang en naar schatting zo’n 300 meter diep. De onderzeeër zou onder meer uit kunnen zoeken hoe het meer in elkaar steekt en wat er op de bodem van het meer allemaal te vinden is.
Met een drone
Een quadcopter zou heel geschikt zijn om delen van Titan in kaart te brengen. De drone zou rond kunnen vliegen, maar ook zo af en toe kunnen landen om bepaalde oppervlaktekenmerken van dichtbij te bekijken of materiaal van het oppervlak te verzamelen. Dat materiaal zou deze terug kunnen brengen naar een lander die het nader analyseert.

Met een boot
De boot zou mooi rondjes kunnen varen op één van de meren die Titan rijk is. Gedacht werd bijvoorbeeld aan Ligeia Mare, één van de grootste meren van Titan. De boot zou uit kunnen zoeken hoe diep het meer is, hoe de atmosfeer boven het meer in elkaar steekt, hoe de kustlijn eruit ziet, de chemie van het meer en het weer boven het meer in kaart kunnen brengen.
Terughoudend
De hierboven genoemde voorstellen zijn natuurlijk ook bij NASA en ESA ingediend. En aanvankelijk vonden ze wel gehoor. Verschillende van deze concept-missies zijn verder uitgezocht. Maar geen van de voorstellen is – tot op heden – werkelijkheid geworden. Dat is waarschijnlijk te verklaren middels de reden waarom veel wetenschappers deze missies zo graag werkelijkheid zien worden: Titan is uniek. Nog niet eerder hebben we een luchtballon ingezet om een ander hemellichaam dan de aarde te verkennen. En nog niet eerder hebben we op buitenaardse zeeën gevaren of een duik genomen in buitenaardse meren. Alles is dus nieuw. En dat betekent tevens dat de risico’s groot zijn. Want in theorie kan een luchtballon misschien prima in de lucht blijven, maar de praktijk kan anders zijn. Hetzelfde geldt natuurlijk voor de andere voorstellen. En dus zijn ruimtevaartorganisaties wat terughoudend. Zo werd door NASA uiteindelijk ten koste van de Titan-boot gekozen voor Marslander Insight. En zetten NASA en ESA plannen voor een Titan-lander en -luchtballon in de ijskast om een missie naar Jupiter op poten te kunnen zetten.
Is een missie naar Titan dan echt ondenkbaar? Op korte termijn zeer zeker. Maar de fascinatie en dus ook het verlangen om deze maan opnieuw eens van dichterbij te bekijken, blijft. En misschien wordt dat verlangen op korte termijn wel aangewakkerd door de kamikazeduik die Cassini – de enige ruimtesonde die op dit moment Saturnus en zijn manen in de gaten houdt en menig geheim van Titan blootlegde – binnenkort in Saturnus’ atmosfeer maakt. Vanaf dat moment raakt de mysterieuze maan buiten ons gezichtsveld en lijken de antwoorden op de vele vragen die er nog zijn, verder weg dan ooit. En misschien gaat dat wel zodanig aan de mensheid knagen dat het bouwen van een 425 miljoen doller kostend bootje opeens aantrekkelijk wordt. Laten we het stiekem hopen!
We have been trying to communicate and receive messages from aliens for around 50 years. From radio waves to lasers, from strange signals to hydrogen speaking across the universe: what progress have we made?
THE COSMIC CHORUS
The Universe is full of noises — and Earth now also contributes to the cacophony. The first time we called out to the stars was on November 19, 1962 with The Morse Message. This message was sent in Morse code from the Evpatoria Planetary Radar to Venus. What did we say? “MIR” — the Russian word for both world and peace. This was followed a few days later on November 24 by “LENIN” and “SSSR” (Russia’s leader and the abbreviation for the Soviet Union, respectively). Later, in 1999, a team headed by Alexander Zaitsev, a rogue Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) member, beamed Cosmic Call 1 to four nearby suns from the Yevpatoria RT-70 radio telescope in Crimea. He called his system Messaging to Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI).
He argued that his decision was due to the SETI Paradox, which he characterized as “This paradoxical disparity of effort, a passionate desire to receive and no corresponding attempt to give.” He also stated that he did “not want to live in a cocoon, in a ‘one-man island.'”
Similar messages were subsequently sent out in 2001 (Teen Age Message), 2003 (Cosmic Call 2), and 2008 (A Message From Earth). These messages caused fierce debate within the scientific coommunity, prompting multiple meetings by the Royal Society in 2010 on the topic of “Towards a Scientific and Societal Agenda on Extraterrestrial Life.”
SETI has sent authorized messages into the cosmos, including the Lone Signal in 2013 and A Simple Response to an Elemental Message in 2016. Other messages not related to or verified by SETI have also been sent, such as the the Hello From Earth message in 2009.
In response, we have heard very little back, causing some to dub the universe “The Great Silence” — David Brin told Phys.org that the most obvious possibilities have now been ruled out, “including gaudy tutorial beacons that advanced ETCs would supposedly erect.”
A particularly exciting narrowband radio signal from space was detected by the Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope in 1977, which many have since dubbed the Wow! Signal, although it has now been shown to probably be caused by comets. A less notable example is Radio source SHGb02+14a, which was detected in 2003. The radio source was 1420 MHz and lasted for a minute each time it was observed, although the signal was extremely weak.
HOW DO WE SPEAK TO ALIENS?
There are two aspects of our communication with aliens: how we send it, and what we say. There has been vigorous discussion about both facets of inter-galaxy communication.
The main means we currently have of broadcasting ourselves across the universe is through radio signals. Frequency modulated radio waves were used when we projected a message from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico in 1974: it contained, in binary, pictorial representations of humanity, formulas for the elements and compounds that make up DNA, as well as representations of the Solar System. Other systems have been more manual: for example, the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes bolting ‘Pioneer Plaques’ to their doors.
Future efforts will try to update this system, using either the more sophisticated radio signals we possess today, or turning to lasers to beam ourselves to other planets. METI will begin their search by beaming to Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to our sun.
Douglas Vakoch, the former director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute and president of METI, said to Forbes, “It’s too late to conceal ourselves in the universe, so we should decide how we want to represent ourselves.” But how can we know how what we choose to represent is what will be received when we have no comprehension of the technology aliens may be using, or of their specific culture?
The central debate over what we send to aliens stems from what they would think if they received a signal. Opinion is split among scientific heavyweights over whether aliens would be benevolent or malevolent. Carl Sagan believes that any contact would be benign because, as he stated in his novel Contact, written in 1985, “In the long run, the aggressive civilizations destroy themselves, almost always.” On the other hand, Stephen Hawking believes that “if aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”
Other specialists such as Seth Shostak, an astronomer at SETI, think that if we truly believed in a threat, we would be more careful about all radio use; he told phys.org, “We cannot pretend that our present level of activity with respect to broadcasting or radar usage is ‘safe.’ If danger exists, we’re already vulnerable.”
An encounter with aliens is a real possibility, and one that would have earth-changing consequences. When we will meet them is anyone’s guess — it may be in ten years, it may be never — but it is important to have discussion surrounding how to deal with an encounter to prepare for every possible outcome.
The strangest object...a sphere...with alien like properties is found in the backyard of the Betz's family house.
A family stumbles upon a mysterious seemingly otherworldly sphere in the middle of the woods with strange behaviors…
Terry Betz was just a 21 year old pre-med student when he discovered the mysterious gleaming artifact, on his parent's burnt woodland acreage, on historic Fort George Island, on Florida's Bermuda coast.
It was a shiny, metal sphere, about the size of a volleyball. It was highly polished and perfectly smooth with only one exception: A tiny triangular symbol etched onto it's surface, which seemed to be magnetic.
It seemed the only direction the strange sphere could have come from, was up. Perhaps it was some sort of satellite that had dropped from orbit, but it showed no signs of scorch marks from re-entry. The recent forest fire that exposed it did not seem to leave any burn marks either.
When they got the sphere home they were shocked to see it start vibrating as though a small motor were inside, and it rolled on it's own power as if exploring it's new surroundings, checking out the entire room for several minutes, before returning to it's starting point. When placed on a table top, it would roll right up to the edge and then change direction to avoid falling off, even rolling upwards when the table was tilted forward.
It also reacted to Terry's guitar playing by vibrating like a tuning fork, which disturbed the family dog so much she would whimper and cringe, covering her ears with her paws. The family soon started noticing the ghostly sound of organ music playing throughout the house, and doors slamming for no apparent reason.
The US Navy was invited to analyze the sphere, who concluded, “They knew it wasn't theirs, but there’s certainly something odd about it.” Their most powerful x-rays were unable to penetrate two inner cores of unusual density inside the thick, stainless steel shell. They'd have to cut it open to examine it.
Other scientific researchers, including Project Blue Book advisor Dr. Allen Hynek, also examined the sphere and discovered it was emitting radio waves, and was emitting an impossible magnetic field that defied modern physics by fluctuating from multiple poles.
They also calculated that the inner core must contain an element far heavier than the most radioactive element on Earth, and that if the sphere was ever pierced, “perhaps the masses would go critical’ and explode like an atomic bomb.” Shortly after this announcement, the Betz family and the sphere disappeared, never to be heard from again.
