UFO hunters have experienced a resurgence of interest in one of the most bizarre UFO mysteries of the past few decades. Space watchers and UFO enthusiasts have been putting renewed pressure on the space agency NASA to open up about the photograph they took on the STS-100 mission in 2001 which appears to show a number of UFOs traveling in formation in the vicinity of the International Space Station.
The mysterious image initially appeared on NASA’s online archives of photographs taken in the course of various space travel missions, but it was swiftly deleted from the image bank once individuals began to question what was depicted in it. The space agency has a history of deleting potentially compromising images that appear to show UFOs in this solar system which has led to many people arguing that the space agency is attempting to cover up the existence a highly intelligent alien civilization which operates in close proximity to Earth.
While the image caused quite a storm at the time, most people within the UFO hunter community forgot about it as the years went by. However, there has been renewed interest in the peculiar image owing to the Black Vault, a UFO website, which has reviewed the case recently. Workers for the Black Vault focussed on the claims made by skeptics who suggested that the UFOs in the image were actually nothing more than a photographic anomaly caused by long exposure of moving objects or multiple images laid on top of one another. Researchers at the Black Vault attempted to disprove this explanation by demonstrating how images actually look when space debris is caught on long exposure or when several photographs are laid on top of one another. The images that they produced looked nothing like the mysterious photograph which was taken by NASA cameras of the UFO formation back in 2001.
This is not the first time that NASA has come under pressure, to tell the truth about unusual images captured in the course of their exploration missions. However, if history is a guide, the space agency will maintain a stony silence about these images which they tend to prefer to cover up as much as they can.

When the online collectivist group Anonymous released a new video this week claiming that the space agency NASA was imminently about to announce the discovery of extra-terrestrial life in this universe, it generated a huge amount of excitement for space watchers all over the world. Unfortunately, according to the space agency, the claims made by Anonymous in this viral video is simply incorrect.

"Contrary to some reports, there's no pending announcement from NASA regarding extraterrestrial life, "said Robert Zurbuchen, NASA associate administrator for science in a tweet published this week, putting an end to the speculation that the space agency was on the cusp of making a major announcement about the discovery of extra-terrestrial life.
The announcement by NASA came as no surprise to many people who deemed the video released by Anonymous to contain false information from the outset. Many observers pointed out that the video actually contained no information about the supposed discovery of extra-terrestrial life and instead relied heavily on Zubuchen’s own comments at a Senate hearing when he claimed that, "We are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented discoveries in history.” However, these claims were taken out of context by Anonymous. Zurbuchen was referring to NASA’s work in the long-term rather than speaking of an imminent discovery.
But even though this information was false, those who are keenly awaiting the announcement that NASA has discovered extra-terrestrial life may not have to wait for too long. Most of the astronomers and scientists working for the space agency believe that they will be able to announce the discovery of alien life in the space of the next ten to thirty years. Scientists working for the agency are particularly excited about the potential of next-generation hardware such as the James Webb Space Telescope which will be fully operational in the course of the next few years. It is hoped that the incredibly powerful telescope will be an essential tool to allow scientists to discover life far away from planet Earth.

New Faction Book Touches UFO Sighting Over Wellington, Author Says
New York Times bestselling author Steve Alten claims he spotted something bizarre in the sky over Wellington. He says he saw about a dozen objects in saucer shape with amber lights on the bottoms flying along State Road 7 from south to north. The objects were going in staggered pairs about a thousand feet in the air and moving whisper quiet, according to Alten.
Alten believes he witnessed a series of UFOs in the night sky in 2013. He has been researching about it ever since, culminating the creation of a fiction book Undisclosed. His extensive research on UFOs and aliens has made him convinced that extraterrestrials exist.
Alten is known for his books centring around the fictitious survival of the giant prehistoric shark called Megalodon. He reveals that his latest novel is based on what he believes are facts, so he prefers to call it as faction instead of fiction. The book cover features flying saucers over a farm with the tagline “We’ve been lied to…”
Alten describes what he witnessed that night. He says that eight to twelve lights were flying in staggered pairs approaching less than a thousand feet above State Road 7 from the south. Alte says that the lights were far too silent and smooth to be helicopters and planes.
When the lights passed overhead, Alten could see the outline of saucer-shaped vessels. Alten who was driving the car with his wife parked the car, stood and watched them. Both of them were left stunned as the lights moved north through a cloudless night sky. The UFOs then quietly faded pair by pair.
Seeing and photographing animals popping out from nowhere is not new to wildlife photographer Ken Rice. However, something unusual suddenly appeared when he was out shooting photos on Saturday. His camera lens captured something he has never seen before. He could not explain the thing that came out of nowhere. Rice is a resident in Oshawa and was at the marsh area close to the General Motors of Canada headquarters situated on Colonel Sam Drive when he noticed the strange object off in the distance at around 7:45 p.m. on 17th June.
Rice said that he was walking back to his car and spotted something that popped out all of a sudden far away in the sky. He first thought that it was a big turkey vulture, so he decided to take a photo of it as it hovered, remained there for a minute and went away.
When Rice got home, he took a closer look at the image. However, he has no idea what could be the object.
The object was faster and too high for a balloon, according to Rice. He called the unknown aerial thing as UFO since he could not identify the object and no one could give an explanation after he posted the photo on Facebook.

Bright white sphere appears in self photos, it is in various positions on pics.
I was in Indian Shores, Florida taking pics of myself w/ ocean behind me, it was daytime. I did not see object at that time, only when I saw pics later at home after uploading to pc. The object was very bright white round sphere. I was standing in same spot mostly, but the object in the pics seems to have moved a number of times. It shows up on my right side, my left, and high over my head. I use the Sun as the reference point.
When I zoom in on pic, the light shows a little red and green on opposite sides. So that makes me think its not a planet. And not a star, cause they don’t move like that. Anyway, there are other anomalies around the sun, that could be a photo mess up, I can’t tell exactly why those colors are there. But the video explains what may have caused it, maybe a photo expert can tell what it is or isn’t. I’m sending this just for the record. The white sphere is the reason I’m sending this. Thankx

Some Of The World’s Top Scientists Met Recently To Discuss How To Find Alien Life
A remarkable meeting of minds took place in California last month on April 20 and 21. Stanford University was the scene for the second annual Breakthrough Discuss, where scientists from a variety of fields came together to tackle arguably the greatest question we have ever faced – are we alone in the universe?
The event was part of Breakthrough Initiatives, a bold program started by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner to spark advancements in the search for life. This includes searching for alien signals via Breakthrough Listen and potentially traveling to Proxima b, the closest exoplanet to Earth, with Breakthrough Starshot.
The idea of Breakthrough Discuss was not only to talk about these ventures, but also to explore the broader search for life. This includes finding potentially habitable worlds around nearby stars like the TRAPPIST-1 system and more recent discoveries relating to Enceladus. There were also discussions on the possibility of finding signals from aliens, known as the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI).
“I’m just so delighted with this meeting,” Jill Tarter from the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, told IFLScience. “We want to know what our place in the universe is. Are we part of something that’s quite common, or are we totally separate and unusual and unique?”

Breakthrough Discuss began with a series of talks on red dwarf stars and their potential for hosting life. The idea has come to the fore recently, particularly with places like TRAPPIST-1 40 light-years away found to have multiple rocky planets in orbit. Red dwarfs are the most numerous stars in our galaxy, and their relative dimness compared to our Sun makes it easier to see and study the planets in orbit around them.
It’s still not clear if a planet in orbit around a red dwarf can be habitable; the stars are temperamental and prone to flaring. But they are undoubtedly attractive targets, and they may be some of the best places to look for life. Just the other day, a new planet was found around the red dwarf LHS 1140b, also about 40 light-years away, which has been heralded as a great place to look.
Guillem Anglada-Escudé from Queen Mary University of London gave the keynote talk of the conference, discussing how he and his team were going to study the nearest red dwarfs for planets. We already know Proxima Centauri 4.2 light-years away plays host to at least one – Proxima b – and it may have more. Now, Anglada-Escudé and his team will shift their focus to Barnard’s Star 6 light-years away, and other nearby red dwarfs, as part of a new project called Red Dots to find nearby planets. We should know by the end of the year if there’s anything there.
“We want to get more science done, look for more planets,” Anglada-Escudé, who was recently named one of Time’s 100 most influential people, told IFLScience. “You never know what’s there until you look for it.”

Finding these planets is only the first part, though. A number of scientists are now investigating what techniques we can use to work out if they have any life on them. Direct imaging of the surfaces will be next to impossible, so instead we’ll need to examine the atmospheres of the planets by studying the light that comes through them from their host star.
Most of the work in this area focuses on a handful of molecules such as oxygen and methane, but in total there are 1,500 molecules that could be useful. Huge upcoming ground-based telescopes – known as Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) – like the upcoming Thirty Meter Telescope in Hawaii and the Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile will help in this endeavor, as will NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
“I’m very excited about the planets around low mass stars,” Sir Martin Rees, the UK Astronomer Royal, told IFLScience. “And I think it’s very good to realize that the next-generation race to build giant ground-based telescopes is going to open up the possibility of getting real spectroscopic data on the nearest planets.”
The field has changed dramatically in just a few years. In 2009, when NASA launched its Kepler Telescope, we still weren’t sure how common planets were around other stars. Now we know of thousands, and we’re honing in on some that could be habitable. Every star is now thought to host at least one planet on average, and likely many more.
And the question of finding life is the driving factor of it all. We’ve got no idea if life like that on our planet is common, or if we’re a rare gem in a dead universe. We may be able to answer that question inside our own Solar System, with places like Enceladus and Europa looking like they may have the necessary conditions for life. But exoplanets carry an almost equal allure.
“It’s an amazing time to be involved in the search for life,” Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University in New York, told IFLScience. “This is the first time in human history we have the means to do it, and if we get really lucky and find life starts everywhere, we could actually have the proof that we’re not alone in hand pretty soon.”

The idea that life might be common in the universe has also driven SETI for decades, with early pioneers like Frank Drake in 1960 suggesting we might be able to hear signals from advanced civilizations around other stars. SETI has struggled for funding over the years, but Milner’s injection of $100 million ensures the search will continue for at least 10 years as part of Breakthrough Listen.
“We’ll take funding from any source we can,” said Tarter. “If we discover a signal, or if we discover life beyond Earth, that information is not coming to California, it’s coming to the planet. These kinds of scientific explorations should be international and global.”
Truth be told, it was somewhat of an odd marriage seeing SETI discussed alongside more grounded science at Breakthrough Discuss. The prospect of finding a signal from an alien civilization is still far-fetched; in six decades of searching, we’ve found nothing. It’s often said that if we don’t look we’ll never know, but SETI remains somewhat fanciful.
“I’m working on the search for life on other planets, planets orbiting alien suns,” said Kaltenegger. “And at this conference, it’s the most conservative thing that’s being talked about!”
That’s not to say there might be nothing out there, and it might well be worth the search. Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center, presented the first scientific results from the first year of the Breakthrough Listen project, on which he is also the lead. While nothing was found, this is one of the most extensive searches to date. If it draws a blank after a decade, well, that may force a rethink.
“At what point do we give up on SETI?” a panel of experts at Breakthrough Discuss was asked. “Not any time soon,” replied Tarter.

And then there was the grand finale, the discussion about actually sending a spacecraft to a planet around another star. This project, called Breakthrough Starshot, was announced in April 2016 to considerable fanfare. Using a giant laser on Earth, a small chip with a massive sail would be accelerated to one-fifth the speed of light, reaching Proxima Centauri – and thus Proxima b – in just 20 years.
Breakthrough Discuss, however, highlighted just how difficult such a proposal might be. One attendee told IFLScience that they thought the project was now less likely to happen that it was a year prior, based on the huge number of challenges that have become apparent.
One is actually firing the laser at the spacecraft in the first place, laid bare by Zac Manchester from Harvard University in a fascinating talk titled “How to ride a laser beam”. He pointed out that the force of the laser hitting a flat sail could send it spiraling off course, so it may be necessary to use a spherical sail to stay on track for Proxima. This itself presents new challenges that have yet to be solved, such as how to spread the force of the laser over the whole sail.
Even if the spacecraft gets there, sending data back is also a huge issue. The chip at its center will be barely a gram in weight, with the sail mere atoms thick. Thus there will be no room for an antenna to transmit data – including images of the planet – back to our planet. Some novel ideas include using the sail itself as a giant antenna, although we don’t yet know if this is possible.
Will Starshot get off the ground? Breakthrough Initiatives
And even if we get there, the flyby will be extremely brief. René Heller from the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Germany said in a talk how, after 20 years of travel, the flyby would last just a matter of seconds. He instead proposed using Proxima’s companion stars, Alpha Centauri A and B, to slow down the spacecraft and enter orbit around Proxima b, something that would return much more data at the cost of a much longer mission. We’ve covered this interstellar roundtrip idea before if you want some more information.
But even if Starshot never gets off the ground, it is at least inspiring some critical thinking in the area of interstellar travel that has not been explored before. Even materials science stands to benefit, with Heller showing off a small piece of graphene that could be used to develop giant sails for traversing the Solar System and beyond.
And Yuri Milner himself seems anything but disheartened, explaining his ethos in a fascinating but sadly off-the-record discussion with IFLScience and other journalists. He remains committed to the cause though, and clearly wants to be part of a discovery that makes life on another planet a possibility, whether that’s humanity or an alien race.
“Breakthrough Discuss boldly demonstrated that we stand on the precipice of making one of the most amazing discoveries in the history of humanity,” Siemion told IFLScience.
For every speculative fantasy, the conference remained mostly grounded in science. If we are to discover we are not alone, the people who’ll find out were very likely here.

NASA Poised to Discover Alien Life –“We are On the Verge of Making One of the Most Profound Discoveries in History”
“Taking into account all of the different activities and missions that are specifically searching for evidence of alien life, we are on the verge of making one of the most profound, unprecedented, discoveries in history,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the Science Mission Directorate during the recent congressional hearing of the committee on ‘Advances in the Search for Life,’ on April 29th.
Zurbuchen reported that NASA’s recent advances, such as the discovery of hydrogen in Saturn’s moon Enceladus and the Hubble team’s promising results from the oceans of Jupiter’s moon, Europa, are promising signs that we’re closer than ever to discovering evidence of alien life. Zurbuchen has been involved with several NASA science missions — Ulysses, the MESSENGER spacecraft to Mercury, and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE).
Here are key excerpts from Zurbuchen’s profound testimony at the April 29 hearimng:
“Now, with NASA missions like the Kepler and Spitzer Space Telescopes, we have discovered more than 3,400 exoplanets,with billions more just waiting to be revealed in our galaxy alone. This February, NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope team announced the discovery of seven Earthsizedplanets, the most ever, found around a single star, called TRAPPIST-1. Three of theseplanets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water. This system of seven rocky worlds – all of them with the potential for water, a key to life as we know it – is an exciting discovery in the search for life on other worlds.
“The TRAPPIST-1 system is just 39 light years away and its discovery tells us that there is plenty of planet making material in our little corner of the solar system, indicating that finding Earth-like planets may actually be closer to us than we originally thought. Future study of this planetary system could reveal conditions suitable for life. Since the initial observations, the follow-on findings for TRAPPIST-1 (and exoplanets in general) are occurring almost weekly, but the best is yet to come.

NASA’s Spitzer, Hubble, and Kepler Space Telescopes will continue to help astronomers plan for such follow-up studies using NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope, launching in 2018. With much greater sensitivity, Webb will be able to detect the chemical fingerprints of water, methane, oxygen, ozone, and other components of a planet’s atmosphere. Webb also will analyze planets’ temperatures and surface pressures – key factors in assessing their habitability.
“The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission will also launch next year, to survey the entire sky for nearby exoplanets, and the Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), launching in the mid-2020s, will directly image exoplanets and study their atmospheric chemistry for the first time using reflected light from their stars.
“NASA is studying mission concepts even beyond these near-term missions for the 2030s that would further explore and characterize the bounty of possible habitable Earth-like planets. These mission concepts include the Habitable Exoplanet Imaging Mission and the Large Ultraviolet/Visible/Infrared Surveyor, which would operate from the ultraviolet to the near-infrared like Hubble and WFIRST, and the Origins Space Telescope, which would operate from the mid-infrared to the far infrared like the James Webb telescope.
“For astrobiology, the key thing to remember is that answering the fundamental question of “is there life out there?” will require scientific breakthroughs from many different science fields, including ones that are not currently engaged in this exciting endeavor. This, however, demonstrates the nature of great research: it’s not just about answering questions that have been asked in the past, it is about finding entirely new questions that will have impact for a long time to come.”
Above is the video of the April 29th hearing. Fast forward to 22:00. The hearing will surveyed recent breakthroughs in a variety of fields that contribute to astrobiology, such as the continued discovery of exoplanets and research efforts to understand life’s origin on Earth and in the lab.
Yesterday we brought you the rather odd news that hacking group Anonymous thought NASA was going to announce they’d found intelligent alien life.
Anyone with an ounce of common sense hopefully quickly realized there was nothing to this story. And note, it probably wasn’t even the “official” Anonymous group, if there is such a thing. But for good measure, NASA has come out and debunked it anyway.
“Contrary to some reports, there’s no pending announcement from NASA regarding extraterrestrial life,” Thomas Zurbuchen, Associate Administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said on Twitter.
“Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question,” he added in another tweet.
Of course, if you’re one to believe alien conspiracy theories, you’re probably not going to believe this statement from Zurbuchen. So take our word for it that this is all just some weird baloney spread by some guy or girl claiming to be part of Anonymous.
Zurbuchen is right, though. Whether we’re alone in the universe is still an open question. But we’re getting closer to answering it. In our own Solar System, we’ve found a few places – oceans under the surface of Europa and Enceladus, for instance – that might be good places for microbial life.
Elsewhere, we’re finding more and more planets that could be habitable. In the coming years, we’re going to be able to study the atmospheres of some of these planets, and hopefully find out if they have any biosignatures.
And there are also several searches underway for intelligent alien life. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has been looking for signals for decades. More recently, the Breakthrough Listen project – funded by Russian billionaire Yuri Milner – has also joined the hunt.
The fact is, though, that we simply haven’t found anything yet. There’s no NASA-funded project looking for intelligent life, so if we did stumble across a signal, it would be one of the two aforementioned private endeavors.
That we haven’t found any life is a bit of a quandary, known as the Fermi Paradox. Planets seem to be pretty abundant in the universe, so why haven’t we found any other life yet? The answer is either we’re alone, or we haven’t looked hard enough yet.
No intelligent aliens are going to be making their way undetected into the Solar System anytime soon, though. If an alien ship does arrive on our doorstop, we’ll probably know about it. For now, we’re alone – and that’s kind of terrifying in its own right.

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope Finds 4,034 Exoplanets
NASA has unveiled the complete set of data from the first four years of the agency’s Kepler Space Telescope mission, which stared at a single patch of the sky in the search for alien planets. The result: Kepler has discovered 219 new candidates since NASA’s last data unveiling, including 10 near-Earth-size planet candidates in the so-called habitable zone around their stars where the conditions are just right for liquid water to exist on a planet’s surface — a key feature in the search for habitable worlds.
The new discoveries boost Kepler’s total to 4,034 candidate planets during its mission, 2,335 of which were later confirmed by follow-up observations, NASA officials said in a statement. The 10 newfound potentially Earth-size worlds bring Kepler’s total up to 50 of that type of exoplanet, with more than 30 of those being confirmed, NASA officials said during a briefing today (June 19).
Hold onto your chair Earth is a space ship orbiting the Sun at the speed of 108,000 km/h. 69,000 mph. The planet travels 940 million km during one orbit. The Earth completes one orbit every 365.242199 mean solar days (that might help explain the need for a leap year). The planet’s distance from the Sun varies as it orbits. Actually, the Earth is never the same distance from the Sun from day to day. When the Earth is closest to the Sun it is said to be at perihelion. This occurs around January 3rd at a distance of 147,098,074 km. When it is at its furthest distance from the Sun, Earth is said to be at aphelion. That happens around July 4th at a distance of 152,097,701 km.
That’s not all, our wonderful Earth is now moving in six different directions with a combined speed of approximately 574,585 MPH, Moving at 69,361 MPH in Spin and Orbit, and 43,200 MPH towards the Lambda Herculis Constellation. And 15,624 MPH Solar system moving Perpendicular to Galactic Plane shown in the image, plus 446,400 MPH orbiting the Galactic Center for the Galactic Spin Rate. We are moving at 574,585 MPH total speed of Earth within our Galaxy.

UFOs and Dr .Claude Poher, ex Gepan (France equivalent of NASA) Director
“Taking into account the facts that we have gathered from the observers and from the location of their observations, we concluded that there generally can be said to be a material phenomenon behind the observations. In 60% of the cases reported here, the description of this phenomenon is apparently one of a flying machine whose origin, modes of lifting and/or propulsion are totally outside our knowledge. Dr. Claude Poher, Ph.D. in astronomy, founder and first director of GEPAN, the UFO investigative office under the French government’s National Center for Space Sciences which analyzed reports from the Gendarmerie from 1974 through 1978, writing in the GEPAN Report to the Scientific Committee, June, 1978, Vol. 1, Chapter 4.
Confrontations in the North Atlantic
Tony Dodd writes,
At 7.30pm on Monday, 12 February 1996, I received a ship-to-shore telephone call from a fishing vessel in the Denmark Straight, off the West Coast of Iceland. The caller told me that a huge triangular craft had appeared and was hovering low in the sky close to his boat. At that precise moment the transmission was cut off. Approximately fifteen minutes later the caller rang again to say that all electronics on the ship had suddenly failed. He told me that he and the rest of the crew had seen the triangular object move away from the boat then suddenly descend into the sea. The moment it had disappeared all electronic power was restored. At 9.00pm on Sunday, 18 February 1996, a further call was received from the boats at sea. On this occasion the caller told me that the whole crew was terrified because three huge black triangular objects, accompanied by three independent red balls of light, had come out of the sea and were hovering silently in the air close to their boats. I asked if the balls of light were connected to the triangles and he said, “No they are totally separate and independent”. The caller was asked if the triangles were showing on the ships Radar. He replied, “No the Radar is not picking them up, the whole crew is standing on the deck watching them.” Were the objects close to the boat? “Yes, they are hovering near the port bow, we’re all scared”. Asked if he could hear any sound coming from the objects, he replied, “No there’s no sound coming from them”. Were there any lights on the triangles? “Yes there are small lights on different parts of them.” He then said, “The whole crew is out on deck watching them”. Suddenly the transmission was lost and the phone went dead. A short time later the connection was restored and the voice at the other end said, “The objects have now gone, they all descended and went down into the sea”. At 3 am. On Monday, 19th February, 1996 a call was received in the middle of the night, from a fishing boat at sea, off the coast of Iceland. The caller said, “We have just been watching a gigantic sphere, hovering in the air, not very far from our boats. It slowly moved away from us and then descended and disappeared into the sea. We have no idea what it was.” An hour later the telephone was ringing again and once again the message was from the fishing boat.
“There are now large florescent tubes like objects hovering in the air close to our position; they are a blue color and not making a sound. All these strange things are making the crew very frightened, we don’t like all this”. At 10.55pm. On Tuesday, 23rd. April, 1996, a further telephone call was received from a ship which was fishing 200 miles South West of the coast of Iceland. The caller said, “You are not going to believe what we have just seen. We were fishing fairly close to a group of American Warships and suddenly there was a blinding flash of light and one of the warships just disappeared in front of our eyes. I know it sounds crazy, but I can assure you it happened a short time ago. Soon after this an American boat came over to us an ordered us and other fishing boats to leave the area immediately. Our Captain didn’t need any telling, he told us to get our boat out of the area as quickly as possible and to return to our base in Iceland. We are now making our way back. The incident has upset us all, particularly the Captain, he has retired to his cabin with a bottle of whisky”. On Sunday, 19 January 1997, a large number of UFO-related events occurred off the south coast of Iceland. Reports were received of large numbers of UFOs gathering over the sea. I can assure readers that these reports were coming from ships at sea, witnesses on the ground and from airline pilots.
On Monday, 20 January 1997, airliners attempting to land and depart from Keflavik Airport were delayed because UFOs were seen flying in civilian air corridors. Only when the UFOs had departed were things returned to normal. Recent information from our Spanish contacts reveal that their fishermen have also reported seeing huge craft and other objects coming out of the sea off the coast of Iberia.
These are currently being investigated. There is no doubt that these extraordinary events are not something recent or new to the area’s most effected. They have been occurring since the early 1960s and appear to have continued unabated to the present day. Source: UFO Magazine (UK)
Thirty years ago, pilots and other witnesses described amazing speeds and aerial maneuvers and cited their apparent ability to operate equally as well in the oceans. Perhaps they are not visitors from another planet; perhaps they have always existed in the darkest, deepest depths of our oceans. If so, could it be that their increasing appearance is tied to the ecological damage we are inflicting on our planet’s surface, as well as in our Oceans? Speculation I know, but an interesting possibility. On the other hand, what if they are indeed visitors from another planet? Why they here and what are their intentions? They act secretly and come and go like shadows in the night, watching our every move. Why are UFOs seen so often in the vicinity of military bases, nuclear missile sites or in areas of military operations? Is it a case of ‘know the strength of your enemy’ or one of observing a primitive culture working towards their own self- destruction? What do you think?

Department of Astronomy – Harvard University have sent me confirmation that my space footage is real and I am not the only one to film it and they even tell me who the first person in the USA is to film the same space footage as me.
They go into detail that this space footage is the Lacrosse radar satellite operated by the US National Reconnaissance Office. It is known to have a long box-like structure with a big antenna dish hanging off it. The images showing a rectangular object with one big box and a smaller box parallel to it may be a new version of the same satellite with a side-looking radar, the European ENVISAT radar satellite. In The Diary entry for Tuesday, June 11, 1985 (page 334) Reagan wrote:
Lunch with 5 top space scientists. “It was fascinating. Space truly is the last frontier and some of the developments there in astronomy etc. are like science fiction, except they are real. I learned that our shuttle capacity is such that we could orbit 300 people.”
Note: This would indicate a space ship at least as large as a 747 aircraft that is 250 feet long. It is likely much bigger to accommodate sleeping quarters, kitchen facilities, bathrooms, storage radar and weapons. The now grounded Space Shuttle held a maximum of eight people and even if all five took off fully loaded it would be impossible to put 300 astronauts in orbit. Apparently President Reagan revealed the existence of a highly classified space program that could accommodate hundreds of astronauts in orbit?
Reagan Star Wars Test Site
The Reagan Test Site (RTS), as it is known today, is the United States’ premier missile range. Located on Kwajalein Atoll in the Pacific, RTS has played a major role during the past 50 years in intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) testing, missile defense development and testing, space-object tracking and, sensor technology development, and scientific research. MIT Lincoln Laboratory has filled the technical leadership role since 1962 when the first instrumentation radar, Target Resolution and Discrimination Experiment (TRADEX), became operational. The year 2012 marks 50 years of operation of TRADEX and 50 years of continuous presence and service of Lincoln Laboratory at Kwajalein. During those 50 years, the Laboratory has been responsible for keeping the RTS instrumentation at state-of-the-art levels by continuously developing and inserting advanced technology. The Air, Missile, & Maritime Defense Technology mission area develops integrated systems for defense against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and air vehicles in tactical, strategic, and homeland defense applications. Fiery Cross Island
A year ago Fiery Cross Island didn’t exist but dozens of ships and dredges have built six islands. China’s militarization of artificial islands in the South China Sea is worsening tensions in an already highly disputed region. The islands expand China’s military bases and are located in an oil rich area.

Tiahuanaco Bolivia May Be the Oldest City
Nearby the Akapana pyramid is the Kalasasaya compound, a structure whose design and celestial alignment suggests a great antiquity for Tiahuanaco. Arthur Posnansky, a German-Bolivian scholar, exhaustively studied Tiwanakufor almost fifty years. Posnansky conducted precise surveys of all the principal structures of Tiahuanaco, including the Kalasasaya compound, which is delineated by a series of vertical stone pillars. Utilizing his measurements of sight lines along these pillars, the celestial orientation of the Kalasasaya, and its purposely-intended deviations from the cardinal points, Posnansky was able to show the alignment of the structure was based upon an astronomical principle called the obliquity of the ecliptic. His findings strongly suggest that its initial construction was around 15,000 BC, and this date was later confirmed by a team of four astronomers from various universities in Germany. Equally astonishing, the spatial arrangement of Tiahuanaco’s four main structures — relative to one another and to the stars above — indicates that the initial site engineers had an advanced knowledge of astronomy, geomancy and mathematics.
Adding to this mystery are the ancient myths of Tiwanaku which tell of its founding and use in a time before great floods. Scientific research has proved that a cataclysmic flood did indeed occur some 12,000 years ago. Mixed in with the deepest layers of flood alluvia at Tiwanaku are human bones, utensils and tools, showing human use of the site prior to the great flood. There is also the intriguing enigma of the strange carvings of bearded, non-Andean people that are found around the site, replete with sculptural and iconographic details which are unique in the western hemisphere.
All of this evidence seems to indicate that the original Tiwanaku civilization flourished many thousands of years before the period assumed by conventional archaeologists. Rather than rising and falling during the two millennia around the time of Christ, Tiwanaku may have existed during a vastly older period, some 17,000 years ago. The implications of this are truly stunning. Tiwanaku may be, along with Teotihuacan in Mexico, Baalbek in Lebanon, and the Great Pyramid in Egypt, a surviving fragment of a long lost civilization. UFO Sightings in the United States
Arizona Light
Sedona— I was taking continuous photos of Courthouse Monument in Big Park, at dusk on June 16, 2017. The red was so beautiful I just kept taking pictures.
Upon looking through my photos, this image appeared. The color of the sky is different around the image. Nothing on photos before or after that was very confusing. Thanks to MUFON CMS I’ve also had a “handshake”, of sorts. I would really like to speak with someone about my experiences in more detail. Dr. Greer’s CE5 protocols seem to be working for me. California Object
Bakersfield — My fiancé and I were in our backyard and observed numerous fireballs slowly moving across the sky on June 10, 2017. It was close above our neighbor’s house. I told her to grab the phone to record them. This is the second event we have witnessed in the last few months. They moved across the sky similar to hot air balloons but seem to be made entirely of fire. The first time we saw one of these curved black claw type structure carrying a large sack of fire a few months ago up close. In this event that we just recorded you cannot see as much detail. Colorado Wings
Montrose — We were on our front deck watching the sunset and sky when my husband saw bright lights coming from the west on June 21, 2017. I ran into the house to get my phone and my husband ran into the house to get his Canon camera we took pictures of the 1st one, I took video with my phone while he took still pictures a second one came from the same direction we have pictures and video, best description as a Phoenix or Angelic form. Body long silver jet type or cylinder, with a possible nose pointing downward. Wings that were curved upward 80 degrees towards atmosphere that were fiery orange very bright and a triangular transparent veil that looked translucent seemingly hanging off left wing with bright orbs, we are not sure if it circled our city twice or there were 2 one following the other. It was cloudy and they both flew northeast into the clouds but not together.
We couldn’t visually see the shape until we downloaded photos. We never have seen a machine that could even look like anything of this world. This is not the 1st time we have seen UFO’s out here, though this one was different. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Indiana Light
Indianapolis — My daughter-in-law and I went for dinner at around 7:30 PM and ate on the patio outside. Gorgeous and illuminated clouds moved in front of the sun coming in from the West. I noticed an extremely bright round silvery shining object floating above a few stray clouds to the North. It moved pretty slowly upward and ascended so high that I lost sight of it. Then a second one was ahead of the stray clouds and it moved west and up. This was this not a plane. After a few minutes the one in the clouds reappeared and I asked (S) to look at it. We both watched it quickly change directions from moving upward to moving east as a second one appeared floating upwards. I have no doubt that these were NOT drones. The incoming cloud front changed to look like an alligator so I snapped a few photos with the large neon green disc hovering above a nearby building. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Kentucky Lights
Louisville — 1 was standing on my porch filming lightning and just saw flashes of light on June 6, 2015. I reviewed 5-6 short videos I’d taken and this was on one of the clips. I just saw a bright flash and figured it was the lightning. It was silent until it took off and sounded like after burners. Look on the lower right hand side of the video after the lights take off and looks like thrusters of some kind. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Louisiana Light
Eunice — At 9:15 PM, I took the dog out the back before bed on June 22, 2017. I noticed what I thought to be the full moon coming up with a small point of light at its right side. I noticed three silent bright lights at tree top level. It started to bank but never turned. I called my wife and son to come see this. My wife came as it started to move very slowly across the back yard trees with a smaller trailing light. I could tell the lights were in a triangular pattern, my wife says “LOOK another one is coming up.” Then I see another one coming up following the same path as the first one with the trailing small light. I don’t understand how something so big was moving so slowly without sound. Also my wife took fuzzy pictures. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Metamora — I was at a Michigan State Park Beach taking pictures on June 17, 2017 and saw an orb in the sky with lights on it in two images. I cropped one so you could see what I am talking about. If you look real close one image has 6 light spots, and one image has only 4. I just wonder what it is just below the cloud cover. Thanks to MUFON CMS
New Jersey Object
East Orange — I was relaxing in my yard on my back steps looking up at the cloudy sky. As I was laying there looking up I noticed an object moving fast above the white clouds to my left. At first I thought it was a bird soaring in the sky. Then it slowed down the moment I said that is not a bird. The object then stopped and hovered. The object slowly descended toward me with no sound picking up speed. Before I could blink my eyes it was directly in my view. I didn’t know rather to run or not, so I just stood there in amazement but scared at the same time. It came down low enough for me to get a brief description of it. I was only viewing what a side view of the object that was symmetrical in shape with a round globe on top. It was gray/metallic in color. The object did not glow or pulsate. There were no lights or visible signs of propulsion. Then it started picking up speed and continued the same flight path as it entered into the rain clouds. After the object disappeared I told a few of my family members and drew a picture. I will always question why it showed itself to me. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Pennsylvania Orb
Philadelphia — I was sitting on my porch sound 10:20 pm when I saw two strange lights that were stationary – weren’t moving. I began videotaping then one appeared to move a little.
I decided to move to a clearing down the street and realized there were three of the lights and started filming again. The one furthest to the right appeared to start moving to up and to the right. I managed to get a short video from beneath this object but I sort of fumbled at first and took a picture instead of recording video. Then I went back to the other two lights and they remained stationary for some time. The one to the left began moving to the left in a strange line. Then it flew almost over head and I managed to get a brief video of that also. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Terre Hill— I was driving home from work and saw a beautiful sunrise so I snapped a picture of it on June 19, 2017. The next day as I was posting my picture on Facebook I noticed a small dark spot to the right of the sun so I zoomed in and saw this weird object. I’m not sure if it is a ufo. I just thought I’d let you see what I captured on my phone thank you for your time also there’s something odd by the telephone pole to the left of the sun!!! Thanks to MUFON CMS

Bryan— My Mother was in our front yard looking at her Valentine box of candy in 1961. Apparently she did not notice the object hovering over her head. Neither did the person who took this picture. There were actually two similar pictures. I am unable to find the second one. In it, the objects were in a different position. I will look again for it. I realize this is from a long time ago but the picture recently resurfaced and I found it interesting. The pictures were in my Mother’s possession until she passed away. _Richmond— On Saturday, June 17th 2017 at around 10:45 pm as my husband and I sat out on our porch, I noticed what looked like a meteorite shooting across the sky. The lights flew three separate times a few minutes apart from one another. Minutes later I noticed an object with bright red and blue lights rise up from behind my neighbor’s house. I asked my husband, “What in the hell is that!?” My husband looked up and dismissed it as being an airplane, until we both noticed that the object stopped in mid air and began hovering above the house across from us. My husband stayed out with our neighbor to witness the object. I panicked and ran inside but a few seconds I came back and took pictures. The object just sat there silently flashing randomly. After about 5 minutes the object moved southwest. A red orb like object appeared making quick zigzag maneuver before zipping north! Thanks to MUFON CMS

Australia Moving Star
Glen Innes — My mother went to bed on June 22, 2017, and her bed faces a large window that opens out onto farm land. She called me in saying “There is a UFO!” I went into her room and I could see all the stars in our rural area sky but one was a very bright star much lower than the other stars. My mum was saying it was moving and I was laughing and I made her point out exactly where it was. But then I saw it move – it moved very abruptly about 1cm in the sky, then it kind of hovered and then moved again in the same manner. This went on for quite a long time. The star was extremely bright and behaving in this very strange way, I have never seen anything like it. I am not sure if it was a UFO, but I though you should know because it was a very strange thing to see and my mother and I saw the same thing. I tried to film it on my iPhone but it was to far away to focus on. Thanks to MUFON CMS
Canada Sightings
Brossard— My condo is on the 28th floor on the shore of the St. Lawrence River, on Nun’s Island. My passion is to photograph sunrise and moonrise from my balcony facing south. On May 15, 2017, I saw the moon was rising, so I set up a tripod and took a picture towards Brossard’s south shore. I used speed and 1/4 second. I did not check my pictures until a month later. I saw this picture that captured a mass of strange lighted objects in the sky, which were invisible at all to my eyes at that time. Last year, I had photographed them twice. One event happened in February 2016 was rather strange. I saw a mass of very strange cloud formed right above the river in only a small portion of the area. So I took a picture and saw a mass of flying stuff over the Champlain Bridge area. Since it was night shooting, I used long exposure, 10 to 13 seconds. The lighted objects stayed still to me. In Montreal, the city is building a new Champlain Bridge. Construction requires digging into the river. At about quarter mile away just northwest at about 3:17 pm, I spotted a brilliant white glowing roundish UFO. The pictures are on near full zoom – thanks to the surrounding clouds. You see a small dome on the top.
Its movements were quite slow coming across overhead from the northwest I started to film – mostly pictures on a high zoom as it was almost directly above me stationary. It had an intense glow that at times would increase or decrease. Humacao — I was on my home and decided to go to a hill very close to my home to take pictures to the southeast on June 17, 2017. I noticed the objects right at the same place when reviewing them on my camera. I thought the objects were some kind of flying saucers since I noticed it has shape. One object with unknown shape flew in less than one second from above and below 500 feet in 90 degrees vertical. Another metallic sharp-end at the top and bottom shaped object was below the unknown fast-moving object in less than one second in one of the sequence of photos. I felt this is the first time I got clear-pictures of Unknown Objects moving so fast to be ours. Flying Saucer above cloud and flying around airplane while landing in Humacao. Bangkok — I had just arrived back home after spending the evening with some friends on May 6, 3017. I looked out of my balcony and noticed an extremely bright light in the sky, quite low. Initially I had assumed it to be a star which was burning unusually bright. However, on closer inspection, I was convinced that the object wasn’t outside the earth’s atmosphere. It was very low, appearing below the clouds and also hovering at an altitude much lower than aeroplanes. Also, I made a conscious effort to look for other stars and the moon, but this object was the only bright thing in the sky. I could not see any other stars and I could not see the moon. The object was so bright that if you looked at it for more than a few seconds, it would leave a blind spot in my vision. As I observed the object, I noticed tentacles or appendages that seemed to be made from frozen/static electricity. The object seemed to be a mushroom or triangle shape with a base. The object hovered in a fixed position and I observed it for almost 2 hours. It was still visible in the sunlight but slightly harder to see. I became fearful. I had honestly never seen anything like it. I attempted to message a couple friends so that I’d have some additional witnesses, but being 5am, everyone was asleep. Eventually I went to bed (around 7am) and the object was still there, but seemed further away. When I woke up a few hours later, the object had disappeared. Thanks to MUFON CMS

Aberdeen – I was out hill walking and saw an interesting sky with the sun shining through the clouds so I took some photos. There were no orbs or objects visible to the naked eye at the time, I only saw them upon viewing the photos later on. If we say the silhouette in the middle is like a dove created by the sun’s rays, my finger in the middle is blocking the lens from over exposing.

In the middle, bottom right, lower left you can see objects like in image 0683. Now if you look at let’s call it the doves head, the wing and also when zoomed in you can see more of these small white cylindrical type objects all around the silhouette.
Had an interesting moment some few minutes directly before the photos were taken, an interaction with nature, namely butterflies and a raptor. As I walked off after that moment I noticed a beautiful sky so snapped away. If the photo analysis is intriguing then I would happily expand as the story could go deeper in meaning but I won’t go too far just now as this is an open forum. Thanks to MUFON CMS

He said: “One of the reasons I’m doing what I’m doing is that there are people within the intelligence community who don’t know how to get themselves out of that hole and yet they’re very supportive of disclosure – and they’ve told me this.

Anonymous published a video in which it said NASA scientist Professor Thomas Zurbuchen told the last meeting of the US Science, Space and Technology Committee that “aliens are coming”.
In 1980, U.S. Army personnel stationed near Rendlesham in Suffolk saw a strange, metallic triangle which was ‘dripping molten metal’ – and witnessed a light like a ‘huge red eye’.
Unlike most UFO sightings, it was documented in voice recordings from senior American soldiers, who also drew disturbing pictures of the object they saw.
So far, the files have not been digitised, so UFO fans will have to read them on paper at the National Archive’s reading room in Kew, West London.
The files (of course) don’t contain a ‘smoking gun’ or descriptions of alien autopsies – but conspiracy theorists may well pounce on the fact that three files have been ‘held back’.
Nick Pope, who ran the defence ministry’s UFO project from 1991 to 1994 said: ‘The lack of a smoking gun and the fact that these files seem to have been slipped out without a formal media announcement is bound to start some conspiracy theories, and I know that many people believe the ‘good stuff’ is being held back.

An official dossier of 15 documents, which has been dubbed "Britain's X-Files", has been released by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and published in paper form by the National Archives – but one expert has suggested three withheld files will lead to accusations of a cover-up.
At the end of last week the National Archive released the files, outlining MoD investigations into mysterious incidents and unidentified flying objects (UFOs). They were not digitised and can currently only be viewed in person or by buying them and waiting for delivery.
UFO watchers and those who closely follow the phenomenon of alien life have been waiting for the files to be released, hoping they will reveal secrets from deep within the British government.
Nick Pope, a former MoD expert on the subject, said withholding files will only fuel conspiracies.
"It seems that The National Archives has released 15 of the remaining 18 Ministry of Defence UFO files, marking the final stages of what's been a nine-year long project to declassify and release the MoD's entire archive of UFO files," Pope told The Sun.
"Unlike all such previous releases of UFO files, I wasn't pre-briefed on the release date.
"The release of these final files has been extensively delayed and at one stage they were sent from the MoD to the National Archives, but then sent back to the MoD."
He continued: "Embarrassment about this delay may explain why - unlike releases of previous batches of MoD UFO files - there hasn't been a proactive media release. Accordingly, I suspect the UFO and conspiracy theory community will say that these files have been 'snuck out'."
What's in the 'X-Files'?
Many sky-watchers hoped the fresh files would shine a light on a long-running mystery that has become known as the Rendlesham Forest incident – or Britain's Roswell. This "sighting" happened in 1980 at a military base near Suffolk, with some reports of a "triangular shaped craft."
But unfortunately for those chasing little green men, Pope told British tabloid press he did not believe the MoD files contained a smoking gun. He said some documents likely reference the Rendlesham Forest case but will probably be duplicates of already-released material.
He told The Express: "The release of these real-life X-Files shows that the UFO mystery lives on and that there's still huge interest in this fascinating topic. These files will give people a revealing insight into this bizarre and intriguing aspect of Ministry of Defence business.
"Sadly, there's no 'smoking gun' in these files that will prove we've been visited by extra-terrestrials, but there are plenty of intriguing UFO reports, as well as policy papers explaining how the MoD handled this subject.
"The lack of a smoking gun and the fact that these files seem to have been slipped out without a formal media announcement is bound to start some conspiracy theories, and I know that many people believe the 'good stuff' is being held back.
"Furthermore, the fact that some files haven't been digitised, can't be downloaded, and can only be viewed in person at the National Archives will doubtless also generate conspiracy theories.

Pope said these should be made public "later this year."
This week (26 June), The Sun newspaper, which has seemingly sent a reporter to analyse the archived documents, reported they reveal how a UFO was spotted on a military radar for hours over the Skegness coast in 1996 – with a RAF reportedly being told not to investigate further.

The referenced document, which does not reveal an author's name, contains snippets of news from the time – one story titled "UFOS expose 9-5 defence danger".
It allegedly included eyewitness accounts from police, claiming to have viewed "flashing red, blue and white lights" in the sky.
The news comes after a chief scientist at Nasa was forced to refute claims from Anonymous, the loose collective of hackers, which said the agency was on the cusp of revealing alien life.
"Contrary to some reports, there's no pending announcement from Nasa regarding extra-terrestrial life," wrote Nasa's Thomas Zurbuchen on Twitter.
He added: "Are we alone in the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions moving forward that may help answer that fundamental question."
Nick Pope has long investigated claims of extra-terrestrials and UFOs, but has consistently denied his own life follows the tropes put forward by science fiction movies.
"How do the MoD's real-life Mulders and Scullys compare to their fictional counterparts? Having done the job myself, from 1991 to 1994, I'm sorry to have to report that it's not quite as glamorous as people might suspect," he wrote in the Guardian back in February 2010.
"There's no running around dark warehouses with guns and torches. It's more a case of asking colleagues in the RAF to check the radar tapes and writing polite letters back to members of the public, stating that most UFOs turn out to be misidentifications of ordinary objects."
It seems that, for now at least, the truth is still out there.

The Missing Link: Where Are Medium-Size Black Holes?

While black holes with masses of a few suns and ones with masses of millions of suns exist, scientists have been puzzled to see few with masses in between those two extremes. New work may suggest a reason why.

For decades, while astronomers have detected black holes equal in mass either to a few suns or millions of suns, the missing-link black holes in between have eluded discovery. Now, a new study suggests such intermediate-mass black holes may not exist in the modern-day universe because of the rate at which black holes grow.
Scientists think stellar-mass black holes — up to a few times the sun's mass — form when giant stars die and collapse in on themselves. Over the years, astronomers have detected a number of stellar-mass black holes in the nearby universe, and in 2010, researchers detected the first such black hole outside the local cluster of nearby galaxies known as the Local Group.
As big as stellar-mass black holes might seem, they are tiny in comparison to the so-called supermassive black holes that are millions to billions of times the sun's mass, which form the hearts of most, if not all, large galaxies. The oldest supermassive black holes found to date include one found in 2015 — with a mass of about 12 billion solar masses — that existed when the universe was only about 875 million years old. This finding and others suggest that many black holes were born in the dawn of time, back when the universe was smaller and matter was more concentrated, making it easier for them to form and grow. Much remains uncertain about how black holes reach supermassive girth and influence the universe around them. As such, astronomers want to analyze intermediate-mass black holes of about 100 to 10,000 solar masses that they expect would serve as the middle stages between stellar-mass and supermassive black holes.
However, while astronomers have discovered a number of potential intermediate-mass black holes, the evidence remains inconclusive, said astrophysicists Tal Alexander at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and Ben Bar-Or at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
Now these researchers suggest the dearth of these missing links may be due to the rate at which black holes may grow. They detailed their findings online June 19 in the journal Nature Astronomy.
In recent years, scientists have discovered a dozen or so instances of black holes devouring stars. If black holes grew solely by consuming stars and dense, compact objects such as white dwarfs and neutrons stars instead of, say, giant clouds of gas or dark matter, the researchers estimated that black holes would still grow at the relatively constant rate of one solar mass per 10,000 years. (If they could eat gas or dark matter, they could grow even faster, but the data regarding such materials in the early universe is more open to question.)
Although one solar mass per 10,000 years may not seem especially quick, it means that even a stellar-mass black hole could grow completely past the intermediate-mass stage after 10 billion years. In comparison, the universe is about 13.8 billion years old.
These findings suggest that the seeds for supermassive black holes "were created quite early on in galaxies, when things were more dense," Bar-Or told Space.com. These seeds already exceeded intermediate-mass stage by about 1.6 billion to 2.2 billion years after the Big Bang — "some or even most of the black holes may have passed the supermassive-black-hole mass threshold even earlier," Alexander told Space.com.
Although the researchers said that intermediate-mass black holes may exist in the present day in dense areas such as globular clusters of stars, they remain difficult to identify because the light produced by objects falling into them is "not spectacular, and there are other objects that can produce it," Alexander said.
Instead, "the ultimate way of finding and identifying intermediate-mass black holes is not by the emission of light, but by the emission of gravitational waves," Alexander said. Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric space and time, and the Evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (ELISA) mission currently planned for 2034 could detect gravitational waves generated "when two intermediate-mass black holes coalesce together, Alexander said.
At last, it looks like the future is finally here: the Cold War has officially made its way into space. Over the last few years, the world’s military superpowers have been bolstering their space combat capabilities, mainly centered around so-called “killer” satellites which have the ability to take out or commandeer enemy spacecraft. The threat of some new form of space combat is looming close enough for the U.S. military to create a new space command position, the Deputy Chief of Staff for Space Operations. Not to be outdone by its western rival, Russia just this week launched a mysterious new satellite believed to be part of the growing arms race in space.
The launch was broadcast by Russia state news agencies.
According to RussianSpaceWeb.com, the satellite launched on June 23rd after a series of scrubbed attempts. The launch site was the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in Russia’s icy northwest near its border with Finland. A Soyuz-2-1v rocket carried the satellite over the Arctic and Canada, dropping its boosters into the Barents Sea along the way before entering a tight orbit around the north pole. Put this launch alongside other strange developments in the Arctic recently, and it’s becoming clear that the north pole could be the next big front in the new Cold War that’s brewing.

Russia’s state-owned Tass news agency reported the launchbut kept the satellite’s purpose out of their reporting, noting only that the satellite, named Napryazhenie (“voltage”) is a Russian defense ministry satellite. Aerospace watchdog blogs believe the satellite is likely an instrument used to take geodetic measurements, which are a way of measuring the size and shape of Earth.
Why would Russia’s defense ministry be interested in charting the dimensions of the Earth, you ask? Why, to plot trajectories for intercontinental ballistic missiles, of course. What other purpose does technology serve other than to realize our mutually-assured destruction?
For what is perhaps the most shocking example of the way in which human beings were utilized for radiation-related experiments at the height of the Cold War, we have to focus our attention on something called Project Sunshine. There was nothing bright and sunny about this program, however. The history and activities of Project Sunshine collectively serve as perfect examples (and perhaps far more importantly as officially documented examples) of the way in which human beings and bodies were utilized in Cold War radiation and biological tests. In the 1990s, the U.S. Government’s Advisory Committee on Human Radiation Experiments looked into a whole range of Department of Energy-related scandals involving the use of human beings in radiation tests from the 1940s to the 1970s. The result: the surfacing of the Sunshine files. Or, at least, the surfacing of some of them.
One particular memorandum, dated June 9, 1995, and prepared by ACHRE’s Advisory Committee Staff, is titled “Documentary Update on Project Sunshine Body Snatching” and states: “As part of Project Sunshine, which sought to measure strontium-90, the AEC [Atomic Energy Commission] engaged in an effort to collect baby bones from domestic and foreign sources…the project involved the use of a cover story (those without clearance being told that the skeleton collection would be used to study naturally occurring radiation, and not that from fallout). Key participants in Project Sunshine at its onset included the AEC’s Division of Biology and Medicine (DBM), its Director John Bugher, Columbia University’s Dr. J. Laurence Kulp, and the University of Chicago’s Dr. Willard Libby (who became an AEC Commissioner).”
The memorandum then refers to Dr. Willard Libby and his work in more detail. A 1955 transcript classified as “Secret” (located in the classified materials at the National Archives and declassified at the Committee’s request), sheds more light on the role of tissue sampling in Project Sunshine. The transcript shows that, from the early to mid-1950s, considerable thought had been devoted to the best ways to establish channels to procure “human samples,” and the impact of secrecy on the effort. AEC Commissioner Willard Libby, who was a primary proponent of Project Sunshine, explained the great value of “body snatching,” and noted that the AEC had even employed an “expensive law firm” to “look up the law of body snatching.”
The meeting was then turned over to Dr. Libby, who was by now an AEC Commissioner. Dr. Libby began by stating that there was no effort more important to the AEC than Sunshine. However, he said that “…there are great gaps in the data.” He elaborated: “By far the most important [gap] is human samples. We have been reduced to essentially zero level on the human samples. I don’t know how to get them but I do say that it is a matter of prime importance to get them and particularly in the young age group.”
The supply of stillborns had evidently been shut off: “We were fortunate, as you know to obtain a large number of stillborns as material. This supply, however, has now been cut off also, and shows no signs, I think, of being rejuvenated.” Therefore, Libby told the audience, expertise in body snatching would be highly valued: “So human samples are of prime importance and if anybody knows how to do a good job of body snatching, they will really be serving their country.”
Some people reading this, no doubt, will scarcely believe that these latter words were said in all seriousness, and soberly recorded, within official files. As noted, Libby recalled that when Project Sunshine was created in 1953, a law firm was hired to study this problem. He added: “I don’t know how to snatch bodies. In the original study on the Sunshine at Rand in the summer of 1953, we hired an expensive law firm to look up the law of body snatching. This compendium is available to you. It is not very encouraging. It shows you how very difficult it is going to be to do legally.”
The conference attendees discussed the need for a wide enough variety of samples to cover age ranges and potential variations among body parts. Dr. Kulp, from Columbia, explained that there were certain “channels” available: “We have the channels in these places where we are getting everything. We have three or four other leads where we could get complete age range samples from different other geographic localities. These three are Vancouver, Houston, and New York. We could easily get them from Puerto Rico and other places. We can get virtually everyone that dies in this range.”
There was also a discussion of the need to acquire what were termed “resources” from other countries. For example, a Colonel Maxwell, of the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project, suggested the military could provide some help in securing “specimens” from a native hospital in Formosa. In case you’re wondering, or you haven’t deduced, in the files the terms “resources” and “specimens” refer to people.
Many of the Project Sunshine files are missing – or suspected of being destroyed decades ago. But, what we do know is shocking enough on its own…

Exoplaneten Vorige week kondigde NASA aan dat het 219 vermoedelijke planeten buiten ons zonnestelsel had ontdekt, waaronder 10 planeten met dezelfde eigenschappen als onze Aarde. Daarmee staat het aantal vermoedelijke exoplaneten die de Kepler ruimtetelescoop ontdekte op 4.034. Daarvan zijn er 50 met een omvang als die van de Aarde die bovendien in een bewoonbare zone liggen.
Anonymous verwijst ook naar de ontdekking van een sterrenstelsel vlakbij het onze dat zeven planeten zoals de Aarde zou kunnen omvatten en 'slechts' 39 lichtjaren verwijderd is.
Politieke overwinning
Hoewel Zurbuchen en zijn collega's bij NASA enthousiast zijn over de kans om buitenaards leven aan te treffen, hebben ze echter nooit beweerd daar ook effectief bewijs voor te hebben.
Als NASA bewijzen zou hebben voor het bestaan van buitenaards leven, is het overigens erg onwaarschijnlijk dat de betrokken instanties het voor zich zouden houden. De ontdekking zou immers een grote politieke overwinning zijn voor de Verenigde Staten, die in een ruimtewedloop met Rusland verwikkeld zijn.
Een Facebookaccount met de naam 'Anonymous Belgium' stelt dat het videobericht vals is.

In 1996 is boven de Engelse kustplaats Skegness zeven uur lang een UFO zichtbaar geweest op de radar, zo blijkt uit een document dat is vrijgegeven door het Britse ministerie van Defensie.
De Britse luchtmacht werd ‘vanaf het hoogste niveau’ bevolen om de vreemde felle lichten te negeren, hoewel meerdere getuigen ze hadden gezien.
Uit de UFO-files van het ministerie blijkt dat op de ochtend van 5 oktober 1996 felle lichten werden gemeld, maar dat toenmalig minister van Defensie Michael Portillo niets deed, schrijft The Sun.

Geen idee
Een anonieme overheidsfunctionaris sprak tegenover het ministerie zijn bezorgdheid uit over de waarneming.
“De luchtmacht moet activiteit in Groot-Brittannië in de gaten houden, maar lijkt geen idee te hebben wat er allemaal gebeurt,” schreef de minister.
“Hebben ze hier standaardprocedures voor? Ze hebben genoeg tijd gehad om hierover na te denken, aangezien het object tot wel zeven uur op onze radar was te zien!” voegde hij toe.
Mysterie
De vreemde lichten haalden de voorpagina van veel kranten en waren in diverse tv-programma’s te zien.
Ook wijlen parlementslid Martin Redmond kaartte de kwestie aan bij het ministerie van Defensie.
“Hij meende dat de autoriteiten meer onderzoek hadden moeten doen en er misschien een straaljager op af hadden moeten sturen, zodat het mysterie in enkele minuten opgehelderd had kunnen zijn,” zei Nick Pope, die jarenlang het UFO-project van het ministerie leidde.
Verdwenen
“Volgens Redmond bleek hieruit dat er een fundamentele zwakke plek zat in de Britse luchtdefensie,” vervolgde hij.
Het parlementslid schreef in een brief dat een politievideo van de lichten op mysterieuze wijze was verdwenen.
Het document over de UFO boven Skegness, dat jarenlang geheim is gebleven, is afgelopen week vrijgegeven door de overheid.

Archeologen hebben in de Oud-Egyptische stad Elkab onbekende rotsinscripties gevonden. Het gaat om de oudste monumentale hiërogliefen die ooit zijn gevonden.
De inscripties zijn tijdens eerdere expedities niet ontdekt en zijn van groot belang, aldus egyptoloog John Coleman Darnell van de Yale-universiteit.
De onderzoekers stuitten ook op rotstekeningen van een kudde olifanten. Eén van de olifanten had een kleine olifant in zich.
Halve meter
Professor Darnell zei dat het team ‘stomverbaasd’ was over de enorme omvang van de inscripties. “Het is voor het eerst dat iemand zulke hiërogliefen op zo’n enorme schaal heeft gezien,” zei hij.
“De individuele hiërogliefen zijn een halve meter hoog,” voegde hij toe. “Eerder gevonden tekens waren niet groter dan één of twee centimeter.”
Het is alsof je eerst kleine lettertjes op je computerscherm leest en vervolgens enorme letters ziet zoals op een reclamebord, aldus Darnell.
Wegennetwerken
Het team stuitte op de rotsinscripties door routes gebaseerd op wegennetwerken in Egypte uit te stippelen.
De meeste rotsinscripties worden gevonden langs belangrijke wegen bij de Nijl of wegen die richting de woestijn lopen.
Compleet geschokt
De archeologen maakten een aantal 3D-beelden van de inscripties op basis van foto’s die op locatie waren gemaakt. Zodoende konden ze in ongekend detail worden bestudeerd.
“Dit was niet wat ik verwachtte toen ik de expeditie begon,” besloot Darnell. “Ik ben compleet geschokt.”
