Top five places to look for extraterrestrial life
It’s a mighty big universe, but ET hunters are zeroing in on these prime candidates, reports Andrew Masterson.
For all the hope and expectation, it is sobering to recall that, despite the best efforts of scientists and engineers, there is still no evidence that life exists anywhere beyond our own planet. There are, however, some planetary prime suspects. Here are the five places astronomers and astrobiologists think are the best chances for harbouring ET.

1. LHS 1140b
News of this planet, a “rocky super-earth”, was announced in the journal Nature in April. Orbiting a red dwarf 39 light-years from Earth, the planet sits in its star’s habitable zone and has an estimated mass almost seven times that of our own planet, leading to the assumption that it comprises rock encasing a solid iron core. According to Jason Dittmann of the Harvard Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics in Massachusetts, US, LHS 1140b’s density means it might have survived the runaway global warming thought to denude many red dwarf planets. If so, it might now boast a stable atmosphere and liquid water. “This is the most exciting exoplanet I’ve seen in the past decade,” he said. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science – searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.

2. Enceladus
Thanks to data from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft, Saturn’s moon Enceladus has emerged as every ET-hunter’s favourite target – mainly due to the strong likelihood that it features a subterranean ocean. In April this year, a team of scientists from the South West Research Institute (SWRI) in Texas, US, revealed a plume of hydrogen erupting from the moon’s surface. The plume may well be evidence of hydrothermal vents in the subsurface ocean – the same type of vents that support extremophile life on earth. “The discovery of hydrogen gas and the evidence for ongoing hydrothermal activity offer a tantalising suggestion that habitable conditions could exist beneath the moon’s icy crust,” says principal investigator Hunter Waite.

4. Proxima-b
This planet, discovered in August 2016, orbits the star Proxima Centauri, 4.2 light-years away from our sun, and is the nearest candidate beyond the solar system for hosting ET. Research in May’s Astronomy & Astrophysics journal found the chances of life existing on the planet may hinge on its orbital speed. Astrophysicists at the University of Exeter calculated that if Proxima-b rotates on its axis three times for every two times it orbits its sun, then the chances of it being habitable are substantially improved.

The announcement of the Trappist-1 system in February, with seven rocky planets orbiting an ultracool dwarf star, sent ripples of excitement through astrobiologists everywhere. At least three of the planets looked like they were within the star’s habitable zone. The latest analysis, by Eric Wolf from the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, US, has somewhat dampened expectations, suggesting that only one of the group has life-sustaining potential. But never mind: one chance in seven is still better than no chance at all.

"When I looked up I saw two large objects in the sky. They were jet black underneath. They were quite big and quite high up. They were sort of rolling over and over in the sky. At first I thought they were bits of a large balloon but they didn't move like that.
"Then I wondered if they were bits of plastic that had got up into the sky but they were moving faster than the wind which didn't make sense. One was almost a cylinder shape and the other was longer. It was very strange.
"There is no way they were aeroplanes. At this point I rushed indoors to get my camera and when I came back they had moved a bit further away but I managed to get a few snaps.

"I have never seen anything like it before. I have no clue what they were. They seemed to be almost linked together as they kept at roughly the same distance apart the whole time.
"I watched them move off into the distance as they headed towards the cricket ground but then I lost sight of them. I wouldn't like to say what they were, I really have no idea."
The man has since showed the photos to "six or seven" people and no one has been able to hazard a guess at what they might be.

A FORMER NASA engineer at the Ames Research Center claims aliens are in our solar system and they are creating rings around planets like Saturn.
Dr. Norman Bergrun, who previously worked at NASA Ames Research Center has recently made comments that UFOs are hiding in the rings of Saturn.
According to conspiracy theory channel, SecureTeam10, which obtained Bergrun’s comments, the alien ships have been here for some time.
“Alien spacecraft are proliferating in our solar system and around these ringed planets,” Bergrun is quoted as saying on the video.
Bergrun also noted the aircraft are by the other ringed-planets in the solar system, including Jupiter and Uranus.
SecureTeam 10, which has nearly 900,000 YouTube subscribers, often runs conspiracy theory-based videos. The organisation describes itself as the “source for reporting the best in new UFO sighting news, info on the space cover-up, and the strange activity happening on and off of our planet.”
Bergrun wrote the 1986 book entitled Ringmakers of Saturn. The book highlights that there are massive alien ships around Saturn (which Bergrun dubs “ring makers”), including ones which have actually created some of the rings around the gas giant.
Maybe there is intelligent life out there, but it’s napping at the moment.

After decades of searching, we still haven’t discovered a single sign of extraterrestrial intelligence. Probability tells us life should be out there, so why haven’t we found it yet?
The problem is often referred to as Fermi’s paradox, after the Nobel Prize–winning physicist Enrico Fermi, who once asked his colleagues this question at lunch. Many theories have been proposed over the years. It could be that we are simply alone in the universe or that there is some great filter that prevents intelligent life progressing beyond a certain stage. Maybe alien life is out there, but we are too primitive to communicate with it, or we are placed inside some cosmic zoo, observed but left alone to develop without external interference. Now, three researchers think they think they may have another potential answer to Fermi’s question: Aliens do exist; they’re just all asleep.
According to a new research paper accepted for publication in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, extraterrestrials are sleeping while they wait. In the paper, authors from Oxford’s Future of Humanity Institute and the Astronomical Observatory of BelgradeAnders Sandberg, Stuart Armstrong, and Milan Cirkovic argue that the universe is too hot right now for advanced, digital civilizations to make the most efficient use of their resources. The solution: Sleep and wait for the universe to cool down, a process known as aestivating (like hibernation but sleeping until it’s colder).
Understanding the new hypothesis first requires wrapping your head around the idea that the universe’s most sophisticated life may elect to leave biology behind and live digitally. Having essentially uploaded their minds onto powerful computers, the civilizations choosing to do this could enhance their intellectual capacities or inhabit some of the harshest environments in the universe with ease.
Once you’re living digitally, Cirkovic explained, it’s important to process information efficiently. Each computation has a certain cost attached to it, and this cost is tightly coupled with temperature. The colder it gets, the lower the cost is, meaning you can do more with the same amount of resources. This is one of the reasons why we cool powerful computers. Though humans may find the universe to be a pretty frigid place (the background radiation hovers about 3 kelvins above absolute zero, the very lower limit of the temperature scale), digital minds may find it far too hot.
But why aestivate? Surely any aliens wanting more efficient processing could cool down their systems manually, just as we do with computers. In the paper, the authors concede this is a possibility. “While it is possible for a civilization to cool down parts of itself to any low temperature,” the authors write, that, too, requires work. So it wouldn’t make sense for a civilization looking to maximize its computational capacity to waste energy on the process. As Sandberg and Cirkovic elaborate in a blog post, it’s more likely that such artificial life would be in a protected sleep mode today, ready to wake up in colder futures.
If such aliens exist, they’re in luck. The universe appears to be cooling down on its own. Over the next trillions of years, as it continues to expand and the formation of new stars slows, the background radiation will reduce to practically zero. Under those conditions, Sandberg and Cirkovic explain, this kind of artificial life would get “tremendously more done.” Tremendous isn’t an understatement, either. The researchers calculate that by employing such a strategy, they could achieve up to 1030 times more than if done today. That’s a 1 with 30 zeroes after it.
But just because the aliens are asleep doesn’t mean we can’t find signs of them. Any aestivating civilization has to preserve resources it intends to use in the future. Processes that waste or threaten these resources, then, should be conspicuously absent, thanks to interference from the aestivators. (If they are sufficiently advanced to upload their minds and aestivators, they should be able to manipulate space.) This includes galaxies colliding, galactic winds venting matter into intergalactic space, and stars converting into black holes, which can push resources beyond the reach of the sleeping civilization or change them into less-useful forms.
Another strategy to find the sleeping aliens, Cirkovic said, might be to try and meddle with the aestivators’ possessions and territory, which we may already reside within. One way of doing this would be to send out self-replicating probes into the universe that would steal the aestivators’ things. Any competent species ought to have measures in place to respond to these kind of threats. “It could be an exceptionally dangerous test,” he cautioned, “but if there really are very old and very advanced civilizations out there, we can assume there is a potential for danger in anything we do.”
Interestingly, neither Sandberg nor Cirkovic said they have much faith in finding anything. Sandberg, writing on his blog, states that he does not believe the hypothesis to be a likely one: “I personally think the likeliest reason we are not seeing aliens is not that they are aestivating.” He writes that he feels it’s more likely that “they do not exist or are very far away.”
Cirkovic concurred. “I don’t find it very likely, either,” he said in our interview. “I much prefer hypotheses that do not rely on assuming intentional decisions made by extraterrestrial societies. Any assumption is extremely speculative.” There could be forms of energy that we can’t even conceive of using now, he said—producing antimatter in bulk, tapping evaporating black holes, using dark matter. Any of this could change what we might expect to see from an advanced technical civilization.
Yet, he said, the theory has a place. It’s important to cover as much ground as possible. You need test a wide set of hypotheses one by one—falsifying them, pruning them—to get closer to the truth. “This is how science works. We need to have as many hypotheses and explanations for Fermi’s paradox as possible,” he said.
Plus, there’s a modest likelihood their aestivating aliens idea might be part of the answer, Cirkovic said. We shouldn’t expect a single hypothesis to account for Fermi’s paradox. It will be more of a “patchwork-quilt kind of solution,” he said.
And it’s important to keep exploring solutions. Fermi’s paradox is so much more than an intellectual exercise. It’s about trying to understand what might be out there and how this might explain our past and guide our future.
“I would say that 90-plus percent of hypotheses that were historically proposed to account for Fermi’s paradox have practical consequences,” Cirkovic said. They allow us to think proactively about some of the problems we as a species face, or may one day face, and prompt us to develop strategies to actively shape a more prosperous and secure future for humanity.“We can apply this reasoning to our past, to the emergence of life and complexity. We can also apply similar reasoning to thinking about our future. It can help us avoid catastrophes and help us understand the most likely fate of intelligent species in the universe.”

Below, an edited Q&A with the author.
Chicago Tonight: Has this been a lifelong interest for you?
O’Connell: Absolutely. My first conscious memory is from when I was about 3 years old, 1963, and for some reason my mom tuned in this new TV show call “The Outer Limits” and I remember being scared to death by the space aliens in the premiere episode, and that sort of set the theme for my entire life.
Also, my mom was a librarian at our village library [in Big Bend, Wisconsin] and she would take me in with her a lot of times. When she worked I always gravitated toward the UFO bookshelf.
Did Hynek’s feud with Carl Sagan lead Hynek to create the Center for UFO Studies [CUFOS]?
It’s hard to draw a direct line between the two, but I think it was definitely a factor, because Dr. Hynek’s first public announcement about the formation of CUFOS took place on national TV on “The Dick Cavett Show” right after Carl Sagan had just finished ridiculing all the UFO witnesses on the panel, and he [Hynek] basically waits for a quiet moment toward the end of the show and says “Well, I’m starting a research foundation,” which probably meant nothing to the people watching the Cavett show but it meant a lot to Sagan, because it indicated that Hynek had scientific support for his work.

CUFOS is no longer in a storefront on Peterson Avenue in Chicago. Where is Hynek’s research currently?
Hynek’s career as a UFO researcher is in a bunch of beat-up old file cabinets scattered around between two basements and an attic in Chicago and Skokie. So it’s kind of a sad state of affairs. The people who are taking care of the files are very dedicated and sincere people but there’s only so much they can do, because there’s no money.
Were his inquiries into UFO research met with controversy in the academic circles of Northwestern University and elsewhere?
He was a superstar professor at Northwestern because in his heyday, during the ‘70s especially, he was just on TV constantly – he was on Tom Snyder’s “Tomorrow Show,” “The Tonight Show,” Dick Cavett. So Northwestern loved the attention that he brought to the university, but they didn’t always love being attached to the idea of UFOs. It was a complicated relationship.

THE INTOXICATING MIX OF FEAR AND FASCINATION
that defined the public’s infatuation with science and with Earth’s heavenly neighbors reached a crescendo with the approach of Halley’s Comet in the spring of 1910. Here was a scientific phenomenon that nearly every human being on Earth could see with his or her own eyes in the night sky—the ultimate shared experience— and that a great many human beings feared. For while the exact time and location of a comet’s appearance could, by 1910, be accurately predicted by science, its actual nature and purpose was still clouded in myth and superstition.
It was established fact that Halley’s Comet appeared in our skies about every seventy-six years and established lore that its appearance—the appearance of any comet, for that matter— brought about certain calamity and suffering. In 1066, most famously, Halley’s Comet foretold the Battle of Hastings and the violent struggle for the British throne that ensued, and after that even Shakespeare submitted that the comet was a bad sign for a sitting monarch. This proved to be the case again in May 1910, when King Edward VII succumbed to failing health and passed away only days before the comet’s nearest approach.
Even worse, scientists discovered that all humanity was at risk of following Edward to his doom. Not only was it determined that Earth would be passing directly through the comet’s tail for a six-hour period on the night of May 18–19, but astronomers at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin, utilizing the new technique of spectroscopy to determine the temperature and chemical composition of a luminous body by analyzing the spectrum of light it emits or reflects, found the tail to contain a deadly substance: poisonous cyanogen gas. French astronomer Camille Flammarion was distressed enough by the Yerkes findings to declare that “the cyanogen gas would impregnate the atmosphere and possibly snuff out all life on the planet.”
Finding themselves stalled out and stranded on a celestial railroad crossing with an express freight hurtling toward them, the people of Earth gave way to fear and prepared for the end. “Some people took precautions by sealing the chimneys, windows, and doors of their houses. Others confessed to crimes they had committed because they did not expect to survive the night, and a few panic-stricken people actually committed suicide,” reported science writers Gunter Faure and Teresa Mensing.
The most gullible bought “comet pills,” “comet umbrellas,” and gas masks, while the most faithful gathered nervously in houses of worship, prepared to meet their maker. Some, intent on going against the grain, were gripped by an inexplicable end-of- the-world euphoria: “A strangely frivolous mood caused thousands of people to gather in restaurants, coffee houses, parks, and on the rooftops of apartment buildings to await their doom in the company of fellow humans.”
One of those rooftops was in Chicago, Illinois, although its viewing party took place almost two weeks ahead of the global deathwatch of the eighteenth, and the guest list was rather small. On the night of May 5, Joseph and Bertha Hynek took their five-day-old son, Josef, to the roof of their West Side home to bask in the light of the comet. What the mood was on that rooftop, one can scarcely guess, but it must have come as some relief to Joseph and Bertha that they and their newborn son survived the fallout of the comet’s tail thirteen nights later. Nonetheless, little Josef, who was to be their only child, may have gotten a sprinkling of comet dust that night, because for the rest of his life, his path would be marked, and sometimes defined, by the appearance and movements of unusual heavenly bodies.
Destined to become a trusted spokesman for the space race, a paradigm-shifting pioneer in astronomical imaging, an authority on the study of UFOs, both lauded and reviled, and an unexpected cultural touchstone in the world of science fiction, Josef Allen Hynek could not help but spend much of his life and career out on a limb, reaching for the lights in the night sky. Born into a world where cunning and intelligent Martians built thousand-mile canals and spied on us through giant eyes, where scientific destruction could rain down on us from the skies without warning, where impossible flying ships could crisscross the skies with impunity, and where a spaceman was laid to rest in a small cemetery in north Texas after crashing his flying ship into a windmill, Hynek would, fittingly, grow up to embody the contradictory nature of scientific inquiry and investigation in the twentieth century, with its simultaneous dependence on and rejection of imagination and wonder.
It wasn’t just a boy who was born on May 1, 1910, to Joseph and Bertha Hynek. He was a spaceman.

Have you ever seen something you can’t explain in the night sky? According to a new book, 105 people have reporting seeing something unusual in the skies above Oneida County.
Syracuse-based authors Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller Costa have put together a new reference book that takes a look at all the UFO sighting data in the United States since 2001 through 2015, and, spoiler alert: there are a LOT.
According to a press release, Cheryl Costa is a columnist for the Syracuse New Times in Syracuse, NY, retired aerospace industry information security professional, and a combat veteran who served in both the U.S. Air Force and Navy. Linda Miller Costa, M.L.S, worked in scientific research and publishing at The National Academies of Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency. She is currently employed by LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY.
According to their new book:
There were more than 121,000 eyewitness accounts during those years.
California led the nation in reports, at 15,836.
Florida, Texas, Washington State, Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio round out the top 10 states for reported eyewitness sightings.
They drilled down into the data to get really specific about Central New York sightings:
There were 105 UFO sightings in Oneida County, 23 in Madison County, and 31 in Herkimer County.
The City of Utica was responsible for 38 reports, while Rome made 19.
Sightings are more common in the months of June through October.
There were 468 UFO sightings in CNY, and 5141 in New York State.
I wonder why folks in Utica saw more? Is it because some of the buildings are a bit taller and we’re able to see a little farther? Or maybe it has something to do with the bars down on Varick Street and Saranac Thursdays…hmmm.
The Costas suggest, in a New York Times interview, that most sightings can be explained by some earthly phenomena but a few are truly inexplicable.
According to the New York Times article, entitled “People Are Seeing U.F.O.s Everywhere, and This Book Proves It”:
One of the most intriguing occurred on the afternoon of Sept. 17, 2011, when a man on the roof terrace of the New Museum on the Bowery photographed a fast-moving diamond-shaped object with windows and flashing blue and red lights against the TriBeCa skyline.

The alien “expert” reckons there have been nearly 105,000 recorded UFO sightings in the past 100-plus years. And Sam is far from the only believer on our planet.
From an ‘alien autopsy’ video dating back to 1995 to a video of fighter jets apparently chasing a UFO over the M5, there are hundreds of videos which people claim are proof of alien life.
There’s even a clip of a UFO supposedly attacking a Taliban compound, as well as ‘sightings’ in Peckham and Warminster.
Most of the videos have been debunked by experts. In the M5 clip, for example, the motorway lorries look like models.
While the Peckham UFOs were “almost certainly Chinese lanterns”, former Ministry of Defence UFO investigator Nick Pope told The Sun.
He added that “true believers wouldn’t be dissuaded” by evidence the videos are fake.
Meanwhile, popstar Peter Andre claims to have seen “several UFOs” on a family trip to the Nevada desert.
The desert is also the site of America’s famous Area 51 — a highly classified military base at the centre of alien conspiracy theories, because of scores of sighting of UFOs in the area.
And artist Dave Huggins believes he lost his virginity to a busty alien called Crescent — and has fathered 60 ‘hybrid’ babies.
Some people even believe this picture of Jesus’ crucifixion — which hangs on the walls of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Georgia — is proof of alien life thousands of years ago.

What is the Roswell UFO incident?
The Roswell UFO incident is a world-renowned conspiracy theory about the existence of aliens.
In the summer of 1947, a farmer discovered unidentifiable debris in his sheep fields just outside Roswell, New Mexico.
A local air force base claimed the debris came from a crashed hot air balloon, but many people reckon it’s really the remains of a flying saucer.
The debate rumbles on, with people continuing to make claims about “leaked US government documents”, which supposedly prove it was a cover-up.
What happened at Rendlesham Forest?
Dubbed the ‘British Roswell’, a similar incident happened in Rendlesham Forest in 1980.
On December 26, Military personnel from RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge, in Suffolk, saw strange lights in a nearby forest — and three of them were sent out to investigate.
Two of them encountered a small, triangular shaped craft — which they later drew images of.
One man, Jim Penniston, got close enough to touch the side of the object.
Two nights later, Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt and his team also encountered the UFO — and were left baffled by the entire experience.

Marilyn Monroe’s death remains shrouded in mystery, and a new conspiracy theory claims the actress was murdered by the US government — after threatening to reveal top-secret information about aliens.
The bonkers theory was revealed in UFO documentary Unacklowedged.
It is claimed that Marilyn made the threats after having affairs with both President JFK and Bobby Kennedy, and was seeking revenge as they both simultaneously ended things with her.
What is Britain’s secret UFO dossier?
An official government UFO dossier, referred to as Britain’s X Files, contains a cache of 15 unusual incidents in British skies.
It has now been released by the Ministry of Defence but, in news which is sending believers wild, they’re making it very difficult to get hold of.
Sun Online exclusively revealed that Freedom of Information requests in relation to the dossier could be blocked, because it is hushed up by EU law.
The University of Manchester and Breakthrough Initiatives are currently running their own £77 million hunt for alien life — but experts are yet to find any concrete proof.
There is certainly no shortage of alien hunters.

What have NASA said about aliens?
NASA are the experts in space activity, but they remain notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to alien life.
However, they were recently forced to deny claims from hacking group Anonymous — that an alien announcement was imminent.
They have also rejected bizarre claims from former CIA case officer Robert David Steele — who said NASA are running a child sex slave colony on Mars.
To date, there is no evidence of life beyond Earth — but, when it comes to unexplained events, the finger is often pointed at alien activity.

A California congressman baffled a panel of space experts testifying in Washington when he asked if it was possible that Mars was home to an ancient alien civilization. The panel told him that there was “no evidence” and it would be “extremely unlikely.”
A hearing before the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on Tuesday was interrupted when Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-California) requested additional time to ask the panel of scientists with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) if there was any evidence of archaic extraterrestrials living on the red planet.
“You have indicated that Mars was totally different thousands of years ago,” said Rohrabacher, who is the vice chairman of the Science, Space and Technology Committee and a member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee since he first entered Congress in 1989.
“Is it possible that there was a civilization on Mars thousands of years ago?” he asked.
Kenneth Farley, a professor of geochemistry at California Institute of Technology who worked on the Mars 2020 rover mission, fielded Rohrabacher’s question by first clarifying that “the evidence is that Mars was different billions of years ago, not thousands of years ago.”
“Billions… Well, yes,” Rohrabacher responded.
“There’s no evidence that I’m aware of,” Farley added before Rohrabacher interrupted.
“Would you rule that out? See, there’s some people… Well, anyway,”Rohrabacher said before being interrupted by Farley.
“I would say that is extremely unlikely,” Farley responded.
While it is unclear what Rohrabacher meant by “some people,” NASA recently had to respond to comments made by an InfoWars guest who claimed that there was a colony of kidnapped child slaves on Mars. NASA denied that there are any humans on the red planet.
Twitter erupted on Tuesday with many ridiculing Rohrabacher over his question.

Hypercivilisations and the primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis
More and more specialists admit that life is everywhere in Universe and three-four billion years of favourable conditions, lasting on a planet, ensures the emergence and development of intelligent beings and eventually the birth of a “technological civilization”, capable of building spaceships, for travelling to other inhabitable planets. These conditions, though rare, are found in many places in the immensity of the universe. On this basis, the extraterrestrial hypothesis became the easiest way to explain the UFO phenomenon.
On the other hand, prestigious ufologists, including Dr J. Allen Hynek or Jacques Vallée, questioned this explanation. They, along with die-hard sceptics, have mentioned, among others, that the distances between civilizations are too large for such cosmic travelling. But, as I have argued in my recent book “UFOs over Romania”, if we make an appropriate approach, we will discover that the most important distances between cosmic civilisations are not those in space but those in time.
I have estimated that in the history of our Galaxy could have come into being a number of technological civilisations, of which, maybe a few hundred survived the childhood diseases (that we face now on Earth) and still exist. But these civilisations have not arisen simultaneously. For example, in July 2015 it was announced the discovery at 1,400 light years from Earth, of the exoplanet Kepler 452b. It is similar to Earth, orbiting in the habitable zone of a Sun-like star. That solar system is one billion years older than ours. That means that life and a possible technological civilisation could have appeared here one billion years earlier than on Earth. More generally, the first technological civilisations in the Milky Way could appear a billion years ago, or even earlier. Consequently, we understand that the possible civilisations in the Cosmos are far apart from each other not only in space, but also in time. In our Galaxy, these several hundred surviving civilisations, estimated above, have appeared, most likely, one in a several million years. Therefore, in the Milky Way there is no civilisation close to our level.
What will become of our civilisation (if it will survive) over millions (or billions) of years? It is impossible to imagine. We do not forget that we are not able to predict our future, even in a perspective of just several hundred years. How would the inhabitants of a civilisation that has outstripped us with millions of years look like? Maybe they became immortal, maybe time and space do not matter to them, they may have moved into a pervasive virtual reality, in other dimensions and so on. But the real answer is almost certainly even much more complex and defies our logic and imagination. We can accept however that they have been transformed into something else, beyond our understanding; into something we can name as a “hypercivilization”.
If somebody considers that we were too optimistic and the intelligent beings are much scarcer, we should add that our Milky Way is only one of at least 150 billion, more or less similar, galaxies of the Universe accessible to our instruments. And we have strong reasons to believe that there are other Universes too, maybe “parallel” ones, maybe from other states of matter, or parts of a “Multiverse” etc.
Schooling and science fiction, but not only, set our minds on patterns ignoring completely the possibility of hypercivilisations. Consequently, we face two “extraterrestrial hypotheses”: the first is what we might call the “primitive extraterrestrial hypothesis”, the other that of hypercivilisations.
The “Primitive Extraterrestrial Hypothesis” assumes that all cosmic civilisations are more or less at the same level of evolution. Therefore it nurtures some false preconceptions as: very long and difficult cosmic voyages, wish to land on the lawn of White House, equal rights, conversation, invasion, intervention, aid and so on.
This primitive view is completely implausible. If hypercivilisations exist (and they exist, with a probability of 99.999999%) they exploited, in the smallest detail, our Galaxy, millions of years ago, so they have known, for a long time, about our existence. This reasoning led Enrico Fermi, when he said, in 1950: “they should be here; where are they?” But neither he, nor many others, did consider that representatives of hypercivilisations could be here, among us, but could look so different from our expectations that we cannot recognise them. What prevents us to see them is, also, a set of widespread and deeply rooted prejudices, such as those below.
The preconception of equal rights. A difference of millions of years, or even hundreds of millions, is as huge as between us and a lizard or even an ant. If they are here (as it is highly probable), they can examine us, monitor our evolution, even contact us in some form, but they will never put them at the same level with us.
The preconception of conversation. As far back as 1959, Giuseppe Cocconi and Philip Morrison argued that if the difference between two civilisations is of millions of years, the probability that they could exchange ideas is zero. We interact sometimes with a lizard; but this will never be a conversation, they said.
The temporal provincialism (term used by Dr J. Allen Hynek). It states that, in opposition with the previous dark centuries, the last three-four hundred years brought us finally to the light of real truth and science. In this light, now we can decide what facts can be accepted and what will never be possible. If one hundred years ago or so we started to use the radio, some believe it will last as the best means of communications forever. If one hundred years ago Einstein postulated that the speed of light is a limit, no other physical law will be discovered until the end of times to avoid this limit and so on. As a peculiar example, we have the SETI preconception. According to it, even if the radio signals need thousands of years from one inhabited world to other, the cosmic civilisations will consider that signalling by radio waves will be, forever, the most appropriate means of contact and that we should spend money to search for them.
The preconception of invasion. For many people it should be normal if a cosmic civilisation arrives on Earth, it will attempt to conquer us by force. But the hypercivilisations probably knew, millions of years ago, that we are here; therefore they could invade us at any time and, in a certain sense, probably we are already invaded by them, for millions of years. Some “out-of-place artifacts” could be a hint of that.
The preconception of intervention and of aid. Some hope that the ET will help us (or at least some “chosen”) to overcome future catastrophes. But even us, if we discover a valuable piece of land, which has escaped from the human intrusion, we try to declare it a reservation, permitting only a very limited intervention, for scientific reasons. This attitude seems to be strengthening in time. A hypercivilisation observing the Earth and the human technological civilisation should act in a similar manner, avoiding to interfere in our evolution, but taking samples, making some experiments, having very limited contacts (not at all officially or as between equals) with only some individuals, selected upon their and not our criteria.
Therefore no settlement, no destruction, on one hand and no official contact, conversation or substantial help, on the other hand, are to be expected from highly advanced cosmic civilisations, even if they are here now.
The difference between a hypercivilisation and us could be as high as that between us and ants. Some entomologists who would propose to study the life of an anthill will try to disturb, as little as possible, its life. They could of course make experiments, examining or modifying some ants, or even taking them in remote laboratories, trying to create new “races” and so on. They will certainly try to find out, as much as possible, about the life of the anthill, but will not “present credentials” to the queen of the ants. If the entomologists have the technology, they will create some robot ants, sending them in to the hill and watching from a safe place, for example “on the computer screen”, the data transmitted by them. And if a robot ant would be lost in that mission, the incident would add a bit to the costs of research, without being a tragedy.

We can speculate that a hypercivilisation could attempt to realise, using genetic materials from the Earth, new races, with greater brain, with higher intelligence, adapted for some special tasks, etc. Therefore, many “races” described by the alleged abductees (the greys, the tall blonds etc.) can be such artificial human races or even bio-robots derived from the human species. They can be “produced” for example in reservations or bases somewhere outside the Earth. In the same manner we make new varieties of wheat from the traditional ones. Sometimes, the perfect variety of wheat became sterile or exposed to new diseases. At that moment the agronomists will try to find some appropriate genes in the pool represented by the primitive species of wheat, to improve the “perfect” variety. What if humans on Earth are the “wild pool” of genes, suitable to improve some artificial races elsewhere? In this case it will be no problem of compatibility between the visitors and us, as in some of the reported UFO abduction and hybridisation stories, but also, for example, in the biblical note: “In those days, divine beings and human daughters had sexual relations and gave birth to children. These were the ancient heroes” (Genesis, 6, 4). Some people suppose even that there is an ongoing external intervention in the evolution of the human race in order to improve it.
But obviously the comparison above – of mankind with an anthill – is slightly forced, as mankind is, nevertheless, a potential future hypercivilisation. The arising of a technological civilisation could be a very rare event in our Galaxy, occurring probably once in several millions of years. So it is normal for us to be of interest to the higher intelligences. But what could they expect from us?
A hypercivilisation will behave elusively and will not give us its knowledge and technologies; even more, it will forbid that. This is not, only, because of human aggressiveness and xenophobia, making from all new technology new weapons, nor only to avoid a “cultural shock”, which could virtually destroy all our social, economical, political, military, scientific, religious and cultural structures. I can speculate they have also some other reasons for that. Hypercivilisations could wait (and maybe harvest even now) our original ideas, viewpoints, creations (in art, science, philosophy, ethics etc.), produced as a result of millions of years of our independent evolution. And all that expected crop could be destroyed by a premature contact.
Some old, apparently absurd, stories may be an indication of such an attitude: the punishment for the apple of the forbidden tree of knowledge, the chaining of Prometheus, or the fallen angels (from Book of Enoch), thrown into a pit full of fire, because they were taught earthlings some skills.
Many abductees or contactees spoke about ethereal light balls as “deposits of knowledge and intelligence”, recording “everything in the Universe”, among others, the life of all (or of the most interesting) individuals. We have some hints for this when we speak about: the “Book of Life”, “Akashic Records”, “collective unconscious”, or even “morphogenetic field” etc. That “super-memory” could be written on a “spiritual” support, or on something around us we are not yet able to imagine. Sometimes, some people, under certain conditions, could gain access to this data warehouse. In that way we can explain: channelling, “xenoglossia”, “walk-ins”, “reincarnation”, ghosts, etc. In such a virtual reality, time is different. We can travel in the past, live events, without changing the real past, or we can see scenarios of the future (sometimes apocalyptical), without accepting fatality.
Of course, all the above is not a proof that the hypercivilisations are the explanation for everything strange and particularly for UFOs. It is only one hypothesis; but – I think – one which cannot be easily discarded.
A Michigan witness at Lennon reported watching and videotaping “three, massive, triangular-shaped crafts” that hovered under 100 feet off the ground, according to testimony in Case 84251 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The reporting witness was in a vehicle moving along Corunna Road when he had the feeling he was being watched on June 8, 2017.
“As we broke the tree line, I noticed three lights in the sky from this distance I was at,” the witness stated. “It looked to be no more than 70-80 feet between the three lights. As we drove by, my mother stopped the vehicle to gain a better view. I began feeling mortified and terror consumed me. The craft hovered ominously, making no sound, pulsating a flurry of colors.”

The witness yelled for his mother to begin driving again as he did not feel safe.
“As we drove, another five minutes or less had passed, and I began feeling I was being watched again. This time, another craft had appeared over the tree line shinning blue-green very intensely. It then changed shape as it got closer, still making no sound. I began feeling the dread again.”

They slowed down to get a better view of the craft.
“As it hovered, it stayed in position as we drove past. As with the previous craft, another five minutes or less had passed, then off in the same direction a small, white light from the horizon had grown from a dim white light to a star-sized object with red and blue and green and white flashing lights while still making no sound. We were the only ones on the road, so there was no background noise or disturbance. The two previous craft were a football field’s length away from us as we saw them no more than 50 to 100 feet above the ground hovering over trees.”

Telescopen in Argentinië hebben een eerste glimp opgevangen van de volgende bestemming van ruimtesonde New Horizons.
Kijk goed naar de ster in het hart van deze beelden. Het ene moment zie je ‘m. Het andere moment niet. En daarna duikt de ster weer op. Hoe kan dat? Simpel: er beweegt iets voor langs. En dat ‘iets’ is 2014 MU69: de volgende bestemming van ruimtesonde New Horizons.

Het zijn bijzondere beelden. We zien hier een Kuipergordelobject dat meer dan 6,5 miljard kilometer van ons verwijderd is voor een ster (die nog verder van ons af staat) langs bewegen. En dat gaat allemaal razendsnel. Tussen de frames waaruit bovenstaand ‘filmpje’ bestaat, zit slechts 0,2 seconden.
Sterbedekking levert schat aan informatie op Wetenschappers gebruiken de beelden van deze sterbedekking om meer over 2014 MU69 te weten te komen. En dat is geen overbodige luxe. Tot voor kort was alleen ruimtetelescoop Hubble er maar in geslaagd om MU69 te spotten en zelfs die krachtige telescoop slaagde er niet in om de omvang en vorm van het Kuipergordelobject vast te stellen. Om toch te achterhalen hoe groot het object is, welke vorm het object heeft en hoe de directe omgeving eruit ziet (want dat wil je natuurlijk weten voor je er een 700 miljoen dollar kostende ruimtesonde langs laat scheren), hebben onderzoekers een slimme aanpak bedacht. Ze besloten 24 draagbare telescopen op enkele sterren te richten waarvan bekend was dat MU69 er voorlangs zou bewegen. Vervolgens probeerden ze – in juni vanuit Zuid-Afrika en begin juli vanuit Argentinië – die sterbedekking te vereeuwigen. Dat viel nog niet mee, onder meer omdat de sterbedekkingen maar van korte duur zijn. Toch is het onderzoekers gelukt om met meerdere telescopen de sterbedekkingen te spotten. “We hebben voor het eerst de vorm en omvang van 2014 MU69 kunnen zien (…) Dankzij dit succes kunnen we de komende scheervlucht met veel meer zekerheid gaan plannen,” aldus onderzoeker Alan Stern.
De komende weken zullen de gegevens die tijdens de sterbedekkingen verzameld zijn, verder geanalyseerd worden. Op 1 januari 2019 moet New Horizons langs het Kuipergordelobject scheren.

Vroeg in de geschiedenis van Mars zou een planetoïde ter grootte van Ceres op de planeet zijn geklapt.
Mars heeft verscheidene vreemde trekjes en drie ervan blijven de gemoederen bezighouden. Ten eerste is het noordelijk halfrond (dat gekenmerkt wordt door vlakke laaglanden) absoluut anders dan het zuidelijk halfrond (dat gekenmerkt wordt door vele kraters). Daarnaast bezit de rode planeet twee manen met een bijzondere vorm (Deimos en Phobos). En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, is de samenstelling van Mars ook nog eens heel anders dan die van bijvoorbeeld de aarde. Zo bevinden zich in de mantel veel zeldzame metalen, zoals platina, iridium en osmium.
Zeldzame metalen Een nieuw onderzoek richtte zich in eerste instantie op laatstgenoemde vreemde trekje: de zeldzame metalen. De onderzoekers berekenden eerst welk deel van de mantel uit deze zeldzame metalen bestaat. Het zou gaan om zo’n 0,8 procent. Aangezien deze elementen normaal gesproken aangetroffen worden in de kernen van rotsachtige werelden, leek het de onderzoekers aannemelijk dat de elementen op Mars zijn afgezet tijdens planetoïde-inslagen. Maar hoe groot waren die planetoïden dan? En hoe vaak sloegen er planetoïden in? Om dat te achterhalen, voerden de onderzoekers een groot aantal simulaties uit. Eén van die simulaties resulteerde in een uitkomst die wel heel dicht bij de werkelijkheid in de buurt komt. En in die simulatie klapte er 4,43 miljard jaar geleden een enorme planetoïde (van zeker 1200 kilometer groot) op Mars.
Noordelijk versus het zuidelijk halfrond Zo’n grote planetoïde is niet alleen nodig om de grote hoeveelheid elementen die we nu in de Martiaanse korst aantreffen, te verklaren. De omvangrijke inslag kan ook verklaren waarom het noordelijk halfrond er heel anders uitziet dan het zuidelijk halfrond. De inslag moet de korst van Mars namelijk radicaal veranderd hebben, waardoor het ene halfrond zich vandaag de dag duidelijk onderscheidt van het andere halfrond. De onderzoekers gaan ervan uit dat de inslag plaatsvond op het noordelijk halfrond. Het feit dat de korst op het noordelijk halfrond er veel jonger uitziet dan de korst op het zuidelijk halfrond lijkt dat te onderschrijven.
De manen En als klap op de vuurpijl kan zo’n enorme inslag ook het bestaan van de vreemde manen Deimos en Phobos verklaren. Door de inslag moet rond Mars een ring van puin zijn ontstaan. En uit dat puin zouden deze maantjes tot stand zijn gekomen. Het zou verklaren waarom de manen bestaan uit een mix van Martiaans en niet-Martiaans materiaal.
“Deze oplossing is heel elegant, aangezien het drie interessante en bijzondere problemen omtrent de totstandkoming van Mars oplost,” vindt onderzoeker Stephen Mojzsis. Grote vraag is nu echter of deze fraaie theorie ook werkelijk klopt. De onderzoekers hopen daar in de toekomst meer over te weten te komen door meteorieten afkomstig van Mars te bestuderen. Mogelijk getuigen zij van de vermeende catastrofe die Mars meer dan 4 miljard jaar geleden trof.
Het piepkleine Marsmaantje Phobos is vanaf de aarde alleen door de ‘ogen’ van goede telescopen te zien. De Hubble ruimtetelescoop zag het maantje om de rode planeet draaien.
De video bestaat uit dertien frames, die in een periode van 22 minuten zijn opgenomen. De foto’s zijn gemaakt in mei 2016, toen de afstand tussen Mars en de aarde heel klein was. Aangezien Hubble om de aarde draait, kon de ruimtetelescoop de vierde planeet van het zonnestelsel goed zien.
Medewerkers van NASA hebben de verschillende afbeeldingen niet alleen achter elkaar gezet, maar hebben tevens de beweging van Phobos zo vloeiend mogelijk gemaakt. Het resultaat is een fraaie video.
De verschijning van Phobos kwam voor wetenschappers als een verrassing. Ze waren van plan om alleen Mars te fotograferen, maar zagen toen plotseling het maantje opdoemen.
WIST JE DAT…
…Phobos de enige maan in het zonnestelsel is die sneller om zijn moederplaneet draait dan dat de moederplaneet om zijn as draait? Phobos doet 7 uur en 39 minuten over een rondje om de rode planeet, terwijl een dag op Mars 24 uur en 40 minuten duurt.
Tijdelijke maan Phobos is één van de kleinste maantjes in ons zonnestelsel. Het object lijkt op een rugbybal. De langste zijde heeft een lengte van 27 kilometer. Phobos is een ingevangen asteroïde. Dat betekent dat Mars het object naar zich toe heeft getrokken. Over ongeveer veertig miljoen jaar valt de maan waarschijnlijk uit elkaar, waardoor er een ring om de rode planeet ontstaat. Deze ring houdt ongeveer honderd miljoen jaar stand. Een oudere, alternatieve verklaring is dat Phobos over honderd miljoen jaar neerstort op de rode planeet.
Reusachtige krater Op de nieuwe Hubble-foto zijn niet veel details zichtbaar op Phobos. De maan is de afgelopen tientallen jaren door genoeg telescopen en ruimtevaartuigen gefotografeerd. Zo weten we dat de maan een gigantische krater heeft. Deze Stickney-krater heeft een diameter van negen kilometer en bestrijkt bijna de helft van de maan. Vorig jaar kwamen wetenschappers erachter hoe deze enorm krater kon ontstaan zonder dat Phobos compleet vernietigd werd.

Tot op heden is er nog geen contact geweest met een intelligente buitenaardse beschaving. Hoe komt dit? Misschien communiceren aliens wel anders dan wij.
In een nieuw paper presenteert wetenschapper Dr. Duncan H. Forgan van de St. Andrews Universiteit een interessant idee. Sommige onderzoekers denken dat buitenaardse beschavingen radiosignalen sturen, maar dit kost veel energie en daarnaast loopt een beschaving een risico. Radiosignalen zijn immers vrij makkelijk op te vangen door een onderontwikkelde beschaving, die vervolgens in het geheim een plan kan smeden om een planeet te veroveren. Als er zoiets bestaat als een ‘galactisch internet’, dan mogen alleen ver ontwikkelde beschavingen daar gebruik van maken.
Forgan denkt dat buitenaardse beschavingen hun eigen moederster gebruiken om te communiceren. Hoe? Dat komt zo. Laten we eerst een paar stappen terug doen…
Planeetovergangen Astronomen zoeken continu naar exoplaneten. Zij kijken dan o.a. naar dipjes in het licht van de ster. Neemt de helderheid van een ster periodiek af? Dan komt dit mogelijk door een planeet, die op dat moment voor de ster draait en een deel van het licht tegenhoudt. Stel, een buitenaardse beschaving kijkt naar de zon en zij zien iedere 365 aardse dagen een dip in helderheid, dan komt dit door de aarde die om de zon draait.
Megastructuren Forgan vermoedt dat intelligente aliens planeetovergangen ‘faken’. Deze beschavingen creëren hun eigen structuren om het licht van de ster tegen te houden. Dit gebeurt op onregelmatige momenten. Hierdoor vallen deze objecten direct op voor buitenaardse sterrenkijkers, net zoals bij KIC 8462852. Ze gebruiken deze planeetovergangen om te communiceren met andere beschavingen. “Zodra er een verbinding is tussen beschaving A en B, kunnen ze informatie uitwisselen”, schrijft Forgan in het paper. “Bijvoorbeeld middels (planeet)overgangen of elektromagnetische transmissies.” Misschien manipuleren aliens het spectrum van het licht om een boodschap te versturen.
Galactisch adressenboek Een voordeel aan dit systeem is dat niet iedere beschaving direct verbinding kan leggen. Pas wanneer wezens intelligent genoeg zijn, kunnen ze planeetovergangen zien en krijgen ze dus toegang tot het galactische netwerk. Als zo’n galactisch netwerk echt bestaat, dan vermoedt Forgan dat nieuwe leden direct een galactisch adressenboek ontvangen met daarin de coördinaten van de werelden van andere intelligente beschavingen. Dit is nuttig, want een nieuwe beschaving kan dan berichten doorgeven van aliens, die elkaar niet rechtstreeks kunnen bereiken.
Stroeve communicatie Er zijn natuurlijk ook nadelen. Buitenaardse beschavingen moeten wel op het juiste moment naar een ster kijken om een boodschap te lezen. Daarnaast gaan berichten zo langzaam heen en weer, dat de communicatie nogal stroef verloopt. Een beschaving kan natuurlijk wel continu zenden, maar ontvangen en reageren is een ander verhaal. Het is op dit moment onmogelijk om een bericht sneller dan het licht te verzenden. Als de afstand tussen twee intelligente beschavingen honderd jaar is, dan ontvangt een beschaving pas na 200 jaar een antwoord op een vraag.
Het blijft gissen Het is allemaal filosofie van de bovenste plank, maar het paper van Forgan zet ons wel weer aan het denken. Wetenschappers denken nog te vaak dat aliens op dezelfde manier communiceren als wij, maar misschien klopt hier niks van. Toen astronomen de ster Ross 128 observeerden, vingen zij vreemde signalen op. Na een grondige analyse concluderen zij dat de mysterieuze signalen hoogstwaarschijnlijk afkomstig zijn van satellieten.
“We hebben de ster opnieuw geobserveerd met andere telescopen en hebben de bron van de Weird!-signalen gevonden”, schrijven de onderzoekers in een persbericht. “De beste verklaring voor de herkomst van de signalen is dat zij afkomstig zijn van één of meerdere geostationaire satellieten. Dit verklaart waarom de signalen binnen de frequentie van satellieten vielen en waarom de signalen alleen werden aangetroffen bij de dwergster Ross 128. Deze ster was namelijk te zien in een stuk hemel waar zich ook veel geostationaire satellieten bevinden. Het verklaart echter niet de spreiding van de signalen, maar dat komt mogelijk door verstoringen.”
De vreemde signalen zijn te zien in het rode kader. Weird!
Begin deze week kwamen astronomen al met drie mogelijke verklaringen. De signalen zouden veroorzaakt kunnen zijn door zonnevlammen op Ross 128, door een object dat tijdens de observaties van Ross 128 in het gezichtsveld verscheen of door satellieten. Uit het vervolgonderzoek blijkt dat de laatste verklaring het meest plausibel is.
Zijn de Weird!-signalen geen signalen van een buitenaardse beschaving? Die kans is klein, maar de onderzoekers sluiten het niet uit. Ze vroegen bijna 800 mensen – waaronder meer dan zestig astronomen – naar hun mening over de oorsprong van het signaal. Circa 250 mensen denken dat het signaal door aliens verzonden is. “Dit laat zien dat veel mensen nog steeds hoge verwachtingen hebben als het gaat om contact met een intelligente buitenaardse beschaving”, schrijven de wetenschappers. De meeste ondervraagden zien de mysterieuze signalen niet als een contactmoment met aliens.

ESPACE - Mi-juillet, des astronomes du radiotélescope d'Arecibo, un des plus puissants du monde, rapportaient dans une note de blog la découverte d'un signal "très étrange" venu de l'espace.
Cette onde radio semblait provenir de l'étoile qu'ils observaient, une naine rouge appelée Ross 128, située à moins de 11 années-lumière de la Terre. Une des plus proches du Soleil. Sauf qu'au vu de ses caractéristiques, il semblait impossible qu'elle émette de tels signaux. Les chercheurs avaient alors évoqué plusieurs hypothèses (et précisé que celle des extraterrestres était clairement la dernière d'une longue liste).
Pour en avoir le cœur net, les chercheurs ont donc "écouté" une nouvelle fois l'étoile. Ils ont été aidés par le télescope du Seti, un programme scientifique américain qui a pour but d'observer le ciel à la recherche d'un éventuel signal provenant d'une forme de vie extraterrestre.
Un signal artificiel, mais humain
Ce vendredi 21 juillet, Abel Mendez, l'un des auteurs de la première observation, a donné le résultat de ces analyses, de même que le Seti. Et la conclusion est décevante. Aucun signal spécifique n'a été entendu à nouveau en provenance de Ross 128.
Une explication possible serait donc que le signal soit d'origine terrestre. Ce ne serait pas la première fois qu'une émission radio étrange soit en réalité émise par un micro-onde défectueux dans la cuisine du laboratoire. Sauf que le signal bizarre n'a pas continué quand ils avaient observé d'autres étoiles immédiatement après, notait le chercheur à l'époque.
Au final, l'une des explications du Seti, la plus probable selon Abel Mendez, est que ce "signal bizarre" et bien artificiel, ne vienne pas de la Terre... Mais soit bien humain.
Il proviendrait en effet d'un de nos propres satellites. Ou même plusieurs. "Cela expliquerait pourquoi les signaux étaient dans les fréquences des satellites et sont seulement apparus pendant l'observation de Ross 128", précise-t-il. "Cette étoile est proche de l'équateur céleste, sur lequel beaucoup de satellites sont placés".
On peut voir sur le schéma ci-dessous que l'étoile est en effet entourée de nombreux objets humains tournant autour de la Terre à quelque 35.000 km d'altitude.

Quant à la nature bizarre du signal et sa dispersion, elle pourrait être due à de "multiples réflexions causées par ces distorsions", explique Abel Mendez.
Si ce faux positif est évidemment décevant, le chercheur veut positiver. "La morale ici, c'est que nous devons tous continuer d'explorer et de partager nos résultats de manière ouverte. Certaines personnes préfèrent uniquement apprendre des succès, mais d'autres préfèrent la science en temps réel, quel que soit le résultat final".
D'autres ne l'entendent effectivement pas de cette oreille. Plusieurschercheurs ont critiqué cette manière de communiquer sur des observations non-vérifiées et qui ne mènent pas à des résultats. Avant même que le fin mot de l'histoire soit dévoilé, la Société Française d'Astronomie et d'Astrophysique avait dénoncé "le piège de la communication outrancière d'un chercheur américain".

De Zwitserse schrijver Erich von Däniken is er nog altijd van overtuigd dat de goden buitenaardse wezens zijn. De Volkskrant sprak met hem.
De stelling van Von Däniken is als volgt: de wereld is bezaaid met onbegrepen archeologische objecten, grottekeningen en megabouwwerken die wijzen op bezoek van een buitenaardse beschaving aan onze voorouders.
Ooit begonnen onze goden als buitenaardse ruimtevaarders die op aarde arriveerden.
Machines
Toen Von Däniken op school de Bijbel las begon hij vragen te stellen aan zijn leraren en bibliotheken te bezoeken.
Hij ontdekte daar dat alle culturen van India en Peru tot Egypte soortgelijke verhalen hebben. Machines die met veel vuur uit de hemel komen, goden die rondvliegen.
Het kan geen toeval zijn dat alle oude volken het hebben over machines die uit de hemel neerdalen, aldus de schrijver.
Terug
Grottekeningen van mannetjes met iets wat een helm lijkt, een cabine, een stuurknuppel en een raketvlam.
Waar archeologen religieuze visioenen zien, ziet hij volkeren die de ontmoeting met een technisch geavanceerde cultuur proberen vast te leggen.
Ooit komen de buitenaardse goden weer terug, zegt Von Däniken. Of misschien zijn ze er al en bestuderen ze ons.
Graancirkels
Zo nu en dan proberen ze misschien al contact te maken via bijvoorbeeld graancirkels, die volgens de schrijver te ingewikkeld zijn om bedrog te kunnen zijn.
Von Däniken heeft 26 boeken geschreven, waarvan ongeveer 60 miljoen exemplaren zijn verkocht.
In zijn boeken stelt hij onder meer dat de evolutie van de mens in het verleden is gemanipuleerd door buitenaardse wezens.

Er zijn eigenlijk altijd wel vreemde dingen te zien voor mensen die goed naar boven kijken, maar de laatste tijd worden er steeds meer bijzondere dingen waargenomen.
Zoals een vreemde straal aan de hemel bij zonsopgang in België, terwijl diezelfde dag iets dergelijks ook wordt gezien bij een zonsopkomst in Mexico.
Op 18 juli 2017 neemt iemand uit België een foto van de zonsopkomst. Op zich wordt het een hele mooie foto, maar er is ook iets merkwaardigs op te zien.
Als je goed kijkt, dan zie je naast het gebouw rechts een soort vreemde straal in de lucht. Het is niet precies duidelijk wat het is, maar wel dat dit niet thuis hoort in een normale lucht.
Op dezelfde ochtend, maar dan aan de andere kant van de wereld, kijkt iemand uit het Canadese Vancouver naar de zonsopkomst op de Mexicaanse webcams.
En ook daar is iets bijzonders op te zien. Eveneens een soort straal, net zoals op de foto uit België, maar dan breder.
Wanneer je beide afbeeldingen naast elkaar zet, dan is het wat duidelijker te zien.
Overal ter wereld nemen mensen vreemde dingen in de lucht waar, zoals deze roodachtige lucht.
Of dingen zoals de volgende vreemde regenboog-achtige kleuren boven de wolken.
Vreemde kleuren en andere verschijnselen in de lucht, maar ook merken veel mensen dat het licht heel anders is en lijkt veel feller te zijn dan het was.
Langzaam maar zeker begint het tot een deel van de wereldbevolking door te dringen dat dingen niet meer zijn zoals ze altijd waren. Dat er soms subtiele veranderingen zijn waar te nemen zoals: de schaduw viel sinds een paar jaar, op dezelfde tijd van het jaar, op een andere plek.
Instinctief voelen velen dat het geen gewone tijden zijn en de vreemde gebeurtenissen die overal zijn waar te nemen, lijken dit te bevestigen.
In de volgende video neemt Skywatch Media News een aantal van deze zaken onder de loep, zoals de waarschuwingen van NASA en een vreemde planeet in ons zonnestelsel.

Verschillende objecten in de Street View-weergave van het ISS zijn aanklikbaar. Zo krijgt u beschrijvingen te zien van allerlei onderdelen van het ISS, zoals het systeem dat voor zuurstof zorgt, het Waste and Hygiene Compartment, oftewel het toilet, en de ruimtepakken.
Cupola Het meest spectaculair is het zicht vanuit de Cupola, de module met zes grote ramen die uitzicht bieden op de aarde. Daarnaast is het Sojoez-vaartuig te zien dat bevestigd is aan het ISS. De foto's zijn genomen toen een Dragon-capsule van Space X, Elon Musks bedrijf dat ooit mensen naar Mars wil brengen, het ISS aan het bevoorraden was; ook dat is zichtbaar.
Google heeft zijn Street View-dienst de afgelopen jaren uitgebreid met opvallende plekken op Aarde zoals het Great Barrier Reef en de bodem van oceanen, maar het is de eerste keer dat 360-gradenbeelden uit de ruimte zijn opgenomen.
