Geomagnetische stormen, tijdelijke storingen in de magnetosfeer van de aarde, kunnen veel schade veroorzaken. Zo kunnen ze onder meer het elektriciteitsnet beschadigen.
De CIA schreef een rapport van ruim 800 pagina’s over de invloed van ruimtestormen op paranormale vermogens.
De spionagedienst concludeert op basis van meerdere studies dat een afname van de geomagnetische activiteit leidt tot spontane telepathische ervaringen, met name rond sterfgevallen en crises.
Achterliggende mechanisme
De resultaten suggereren dat er een bepaalde factor is die ervoor zorgt dat een plotse afname van de geomagnetische activiteit telepathische ervaringen mogelijk maakt, klinkt het.
Een mogelijke verklaring voor dit patroon is volgens de onderzoekers dat er meer mensen sterven op momenten dat er meer geomagnetische activiteit is.

“We weten hoe we dat moeten doen omdat Einstein ons meer dan 100 jaar geleden de weg heeft gewezen,” zegt hij.
“Het is verrassend hoe weinig mensen hier echt van op de hoogte zijn,” vervolgt hij.
Langzamer
Als je de ruimte ingaat, bijna de lichtsnelheid bereikt en vervolgens teruggaat, verstrijkt de tijd langzamer. Als je uitstapt kom je dus terecht op planeet aarde in de toekomst. Je reist als het ware naar de toekomst.
Als je daarnaast dicht in de buurt van bijvoorbeeld een neutronenster of zwart gat verblijft, verstrijkt de tijd ook langzamer. Als je vervolgens weer op aarde komt, bevindt je je opnieuw in de toekomst.
Tijdreizen naar het verleden is volgens professor Greene een ander verhaal. Sommige natuurkundigen claimen dat het mogelijk is om via wormgaten naar het verleden te gaan. Einstein schreef hier ook over.

“Het is een soort brug, van de ene locatie in de ruimte naar de andere,” zegt Greene. “Het is een soort tunnel die je in staat stelt om binnendoor te gaan.”

Let’s face it, there have been conspiracy theories around for as long as we have had anything to conspire about. Such ideas have run the gamut from the plausible to the actually true, to the farthest reaches of eyebrow raising insanity. It is an interesting enough phenomenon in its own right that some of the most mind-bogglingly odd theories should catch on and coalesce into the minds of the masses, but some of these really take the cake with regards to sheer, flat out bizarreness. Some of the stranger of these concern evil plots by the the government or even more mysterious forces to infiltrate society and bring the world under control. From nefarious aliens, to secret mind control projects, to vat-grown clones and even supernatural creatures, there seems to be no end to the types of conspiracies that crop up. Here we will look at some of the more surreal, so leave your tinfoil hats at the door, forget about things such as evidence or even common sense, and come with me on a journey down the rabbit hole.
The most well-known, pervasive, and flat out bonkers conspiracy theory involving sinister forces invading the United States government is that of all of the alien lizard people who seem to be running around. The theory in essence says that there is a race of shapeshifting, reptilian humanoid creatures that are variously said to be aliens or inter-dimensional beings and which are said to be bent on controlling and subjugating humanity through various insidious means, mostly through infiltrating high level positions ranging from the government, to important corporations, to the entertainment industry. The lizard people have been blamed by conspiracists for everything from major wars, to the Holocaust, to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City, to, well, just about every tragic calamity we have faced for centuries.
Although the idea of secret societies lurking in the background secretly controlling civilization is by no means a new one, the idea that these forces should be reptilian lizard people was first popularized by former game show host and sports reporter for the BBC and now conspiracy theorist and New Age philosopher David Icke. In 1991, Icke came out with his complex theory in a BBC interview after percolating and brewing these ideas in his head for years, proclaiming that people in high positions of power or wealth were not who they seemed to be, but rather the lizard people taking human form.
According to Icke, it started with a group of aliens he called the Annunaki, from the planet Niburu, and arrived on Earth looking for gold, of all things. In order to mine the gold they found here they genetically engineered human-Annunaki hybrid slaves, which became humans, but some of them further interbred with their masters to become the lizard people. The creatures who were able to preserve a purer reptilian bloodline then rose to power and proceeded to subjugate the rest, instigate wars, feed us poison to keep us compliant, hypnotize us, enact methods to depopulate the planet, and generally manipulate humanity in any way possible, wary of the fact that since humans outnumbered them they could never last in an all out war with us and thus forcing them to work behind the scenes.
The list of people who have been accused of being lizard people is quite vast and fascinating. Among their numbers have been said to be such notable figures as Queen Elizabeth II, George W. Bush, Henry Kissinger, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Bob Hope, Mark Zuckerberg, and Justin Beiber, among many, many others. Some of these powerful figures and celebrities have had a bit of a sense of humor about the accusations. For instance, in 2014 New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who was so suspected of being a lizard person to the point that there was an Official Information Act request filed for the truth, gamely responded to the question of whether he was a reptilian alien thus:
To the best of my knowledge, no. Having been asked that question directly, I’ve taken the unusual step of not only seeing a doctor but a vet, and both have confirmed I’m not a reptile. So I’m certainly not a reptile. I’ve never been in a spaceship, never been in outer space, and my tongue’s not overly long, either.
Then again, that is what he would say, isn’t it? It is perhaps no surprise that many have scoffed at this idea and labelled Icke as a nutcase, but what is surprising is just how quickly these ideas have entrenched themselves and festered within portions of the conspiracy theorist community. Icke has become a sort of hero and savior among this new movement of reptilian conspiracy theorists, and he has gone on to churn out numerous books on the matter, including The Biggest Secret, in which it is revealed that the British Royal family is absolutely crawling with lizard people, as well as the David Icke Guide to the Global Conspiracy, and there are numerous websites devoted to these ideas, which truly take the whole mythology down the rabbit whole and are at times rather perversely believable in their own way to an extent. Perhaps because of this, unbelievably, nearly 13 million American people, or about 4% of the population, truly believe that there are shapeshifting lizard people among us trying to shape us and control us.
If secretive, shadowy plots involving lizard people from outer space are not bizarre enough for you, then how about government created brainwashed servants and clones? Bear with me here, because this one goes deep. The whole theory starts with the dark experiments of the government project MKULTRA, which sought to explore mind controlling techniques and which I have covered here at Mysterious Universe before. Although the program was eventually disbanded, there are those who think that that didn’t really happen at all, and that the experiments continued and the technology was further perfected.
The theory goes that the project changed its name to “Monarch,” and went abut conditioning young children through various mental and physical trauma to become virtual blank slates onto which could be programmed pretty much anything the government wanted. These subjects then have identities that are carefully nurtured to make them seem to be powerful figures in society, but in reality they are actually ticking time bombs, sleeper agents waiting to be activated. The theory can most often supposedly be seen in stars or officials who have meltdowns that are explained away as not personal issues, but rather glitches in their programming, and their “rehab” is merely them being taken in to be reprogrammed.
The theory is particularly aimed at those in the entertainment industry, where the list of supposed MKULTRA mind-controlled puppets is long. Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and many, many others have been accused of being mind-controlled operatives, mostly based on their noticeable personality and fashion changes from their younger days. On occasion, it is not a famous person, but rather a normal person brainwashed into committing atrocities, such as is the case with John Lennon’s assassin. What, what?
On December 8, 1980, assassin and overall whacko Mark Chapman ruthlessly shot the beloved singer to death outside of Lennon’s apartment. Chapman would go on to allegedly claim that he had been urged to commit the crime by an incessant voice droning on in his head over and over again “do it.” This was only three years after the official closure of MKULTRA, so conspiracy theorists immediately jumped on the case. Evidence presented for this far-out theory was that Chapman had held a copy of the J.D. Salinger novel Catcher in the Rye, onto which was scrawled “This is my statement.” What does this book have to do with any of this? Glad you asked.
The book has oddly been linked to a variety of assassinations and shootings, including John Hinckley Jr., who killed former U.S. president Ronald Reagan, as well as Robert John Bardo, who assassinated the upcoming actress Rebecca Schaeffer, both of whom had copies of Catcher in the Rye. It’s a well-known, popular book, so it should make sense that many people would have it, but no, the conspiracy theory is that it held certain codes and keys for mind control to those who were conditioned to it. In this theory, Chapman was more or less a “Manchurian Candidate” style mind-controlled assassin, just waiting for his orders to kill, and with the book having some inscrutable part to play in it all.
John Lennon
Well, maybe not everyone here is mind-controlled, maybe they are just cloned from scratch instead. One theory that has made the rounds is that the U.S. government has perfected cloning technology, and has used this to resurrect dead people of power or, more ominously, to replace them. Many of these wild theories can be traced back to the testimony of an individual named Donald Marshall, who in 2011 came forward with an amazing story of having been born and brought up under a secret cloning facility run by an organization he called “The Vril Society.” Marshall claimed that he himself was a clone, and that such secretive cloning centers were buried all over the country. According to him, this all started just after World War II, and the clones bred there were meant to be used for a wide variety of purposes, such as entertainment, infiltration, and back-ups for rich organ donors, and Marshall would claim:
The political people started bringing movie stars and musicians there to hang around with them, they can control who remembers the cloning facility and who will remain oblivious even though not remembering still damages you.
Marshall continued this astounding story with the claim that the Queen of England and indeed much of the royal family and other were in fact clones, and said of this in one of his rants:
The royal family of England,… yes Queen Elizabeth, Phillip Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Charles are the worst of them, unbelievable depraved perverts all showing off for the celebrities that go there, Elizabeth has the children there call her “lillibet” and does ungodly things to them, some she fakes being nice to, some she is terrible to, cutting them with swords while they scream, the decent people that are there against their will are afraid to say anything against them, most have their children there as a kind of hostage, to be torn apart if they even think of informing anyone, but as they have been torturing me terribly anyway I will tell all, Vladamir Putin loves to put the fear of torture and death into people but is essentially a cowardly pervert himself. Most of the famous people are ashamed to speak or be seen by me there very much,as they’re ashamed of the perverse and disgusting gatherings, I am a decent person and will not participate in these acts, so they use me as an example and torture me for my being a good person.
Queen Elizabeth II
Wow. No word on what the reptilian lizard men theorists think about all of this. This all launches into the list of people who those who subscribe to this theory think of as cloned goons. Britney Spears pops up here again, as she was in a horrific car accident in 1998 with then boyfriend Justin Timberlake, which supposedly burned Timberlake and killed Spears, after which she was cloned. Marshall himself would go so far as to claim that the cloned Spears was giving hints in her music, with the pods featured in the animated video of her song “Break the Ice” claimed to look exactly like the cloning pods at the facility. Other famous supposed clones include the rappers Eminem, Gucci Mane, and Kayne West, as well the singers Miley Cyrus and of course Britney Spears (wait, I thought she was a mind-controlled puppet!), as well as even Hillary Clinton. You can’t make this stuff up.
Perhaps even more bizarre and insidious than reptilians and clones infiltrating society is the idea that the U.S. government is crawling with fairy folk. As completely off-the-wall as this might sound, there are those out there who think so. One group of New Agers calling themselves “The Fairy Congress,” who believe in fairies and claim to regularly commune with them, truly seems to believe that the American government is infested with these magical entities. One statement on the group’s website claims:
The humans are vastly outnumbered at the Congress by the fairies, devas and other Light beings who are in attendance. How many fairies and devas attend? We are assured it is in the thousands. Fairies and devas of many ranks and sizes attend. Some are similar in size to the small ‘hand-size’ fairies we see represented in the common press. Others are immense beings of great power. Remember though, that size is not necessarily an indicator of knowledge, wisdom or power. The fairy beings who attend the Fairy Congress are fully as intelligent (and often much more so) than the human participants. We approach the fairies and devas with respect and love as co-creators of this event. We are meeting as equal participants. The fairies and devas have a concurrent Congress as well as interacting with the human participants during circles and joint meditations. … It is a rare event for humans to experience so much fairy energy and such an outpouring of fairy/devic blessings.
Well, it seems that size really doesn’t matter after all. This is all just scratching the surface, and these bizarre theories all go much deeper than this, but here has been an overview of some of the odder ideas out there. There is a lot to take in with all of this and it is often hard to know what to think. I certainly have no desire to disrespect those who fully believe such ideas, but these are certainly confusing, often contradictory opinions which go far towards profoundly pushing the boundaries of what we know with little in the way of convincing evidence. The title of “insane theories” might shift with more to show otherwise, but for now these can undeniably be classified as fringe to say the least. Or maybe we are all wrong. Maybe we are overrun with clones, fairies, and reptilian humanoids bent on our downfall. Perhaps even I am one. You never can tell.

1. Thanksgiving feast in space!
Three of the six crewmembers aboard the International Space Station are from the United States, but on Thanksgiving, all were welcome to enjoy the feast. On Thursday (Nov. 23), the Expedition 53 crew planned on serving turkey, mashed potatoes, and candied yams!
The InSight spacecraft recently completed an important "thermal vac" test at the Lockheed Martin Space Systems facility in Littleton, Colorado. InSight is NASA's next Mars lander, and the testing, which was done in preparation of its scheduled May 2018 launch, was intended to simulate the harsh environment of space.
3. Earthly message travels towards life-friendly planet GJ 273b
An announcement on Thursday (Nov. 16) revealed that scientists and artists beamed up a message to a nearby red dwarf star known as Luyten's star. The message sent a month ago was intended for the star's two known planets, one of which might have conditions friendly to life.
A new study revealed that more and more artificial light is filling Earth's night skies. Researchers came to their findings by using data from Earth-observing weather satellite, Suomi NPP. One of the many consequences of light pollution is the disruption of biological cycles that are triggered by variation of light, such as gene expression and ecosystem functions.
NASA has released a free online tool that allows the public to view how sea level rise could adversely affect 293 different port cities. The tool offers regional predictions of how melting glacier ice may impact coastal communities in the near future.
6. Ultra-powerful new space telescope's science targets chosen
The Space Telescope Science Institute, which manages the new James Webb Space Telescope project, announced on Monday (Nov.13) the thirteen selected proposals for its first round of scientific observations. The programs, which include observations of Jupiter and extremely distant galaxies, will kick off when the telescope begins operations in 2019.
Solar winds rushed out into space when a large opening developed recently in the sun's atmosphere. On Monday (Nov. 20), NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory released an image of the coronal hole, which is produced by the sun's active magnetic field.
Traveling at high speed from interstellar space, the strange object 'Oumuamua was originally thought to be an ancient comet, but observations revealed it was, in fact, an asteroid from another star system. And now, we know what 'Oumuamua looks like and the story got stranger: the interstellar interloper looks like a strange, elongated cigar and scientists are floored.

A new study may have uncovered the mystery behind the cold polar vortex of Saturn's moon, Titan. The largest of Saturn's more than 60 moons, Titan is the only one with a known atmosphere, and it's the atmosphere's unique chemistry that seems to be causing the cold whirling air above Titan's south pole.

Earth experiences periodic changes in its rotation speed, and according to new research presented at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America, the small slowdown in Earth's rotation may lead to more earthquakes in 2018. As many as 20 earthquakes with a magnitude of 7 or higher may occur along already stressed faultlines over the next four years, according to a geologist.
A new miniseries is in the works to dramatize the true story of 13 women who underwent the same medical testing as the space age NASA astronauts. Amazon is basing the series on Martha Ackmann's 2003 book, "The Mercury 13: The True Story of Thirteen Women and the Dream of Space Flight" (Random House) and will center on the female pilots that made up the First Lady Astronaut Trainees (FLATs).
Liquid water may not be under the Martian surface after all, according to a new study. Researchers studied the dark streaks on Mars' hillsides, and now argue that sandy material is lumping together to produce the darker color, rather than the hypothesized underground supply of liquid water.

De toename is wereldwijd, maar vooral in gebieden die tot nu toe vrij donker waren. “Licht groeit het snelst in plaatsen waar niet veel licht was”, zegt de Duitse onderzoeksleider Christopher Kyba.
Ledlampen
Volgens de onderzoekers heeft de omschakeling naar ledlampen minder effect dan verwacht. Zulke lampen besparen weliswaar elektriciteit, dus geld, maar dat geld wordt vervolgens gebruikt om meer lampen te plaatsen, concluderen ze.De bevindingen staan in het wetenschapsblad Science Advances.

About a year ago, on December 12, 2017, the witness took an image of an unusual disk shaped cloud formation, but even stranger is the greenish diamond shaped anomaly which can been seen below the cloud formation.
While it is not inconceivable that the greenish object is just lens flare, the object has all the characteristics of a fixed structure, described by the photographer as a line of green orbs.
Witness: “On my days off work I walk the dog at the back of Speke Hall right next to Liverpool John Lennon Airport and sometimes I take photographs of the sky and the sun setting down but this picture I took was because of the clouds.”
“After a couple of weeks of taking it I noticed a line of green light under the clouds and when I zoomed in on the photograph I spotted green orbs that appear to be next to each other which seem to be attached to something.” Mufon case 88323.

An online video showing a mysterious object that is apparently manipulating clouds sent UFO enthusiasts into a frenzy. Conspiracy theory channel Suspect Sky uploaded the video to YouTube, which shows a strange white thing moving upwards in the sky.
The video was apparently shot sometime in October but only uploaded on November 17. The bright, white UFO then hover in the clouds.
After a few seconds sitting in the long thin cloud, the craft then seems to disperse the cloud.
Many viewers commented that they are convinced the footage is a genuine UFO sighting.
One commenter wrote that this is some incredible video because not only it shows a UFO but also features how the mysterious object affects change of the area around it.
Another commenter claimed to have also seen a UFO literally erasing a chem cloud.
However, not all are as convinced as the others with some expressing skepticism.
Others said that it is fake or fakery at its best.
A similar looking object was also spotted just recently above the Great Barrier Reef.
An Australian woman named Jenny Morrison snapped some pictures of the sunset above the Great Barrier Reef, and she noticed a bright orb-like object when she later reviewed the photographs.

A strange UFO noticed in the skies close to a military base prompted US Air Force to scramble their jets to investigate the peculiar aerial thing before it mysteriously disappeared.
A UFO was detected flying through closely monitored airspace over Oregon state. Witnesses were left wondering where it may have come from and what it was doing there.
Military officials have not been able to identify the origin or even the destination of the UFO. The military was not able to trace it after it just disappeared all of a sudden.
Oregon borders Nevada, which is the subject of many conspiracy theories on aliens and UFOs due to the presence of the secretive Area 51 military base.
Conspiracy theorists believe the mysterious and top secret facility holds the remains of crashed UFOs and even dead aliens.
According to local news reports, Air Force F-15c interceptor fighters were launched in response to the sightings.
North American Aerospace Defence Command confirmed that the Federal Aviation Administration asked them to help track the UFO at heights usually used by commercial aircraft on October 25.
Fighter jets were sent from Portland to investigate the unusual flying thing but failed to find anything.
The craft transmitted no collision avoidance signals.
Air traffic control reportedly encountered difficulty following the UFO on the radar.
It is vital to note that the F-15C Eagle interceptors have some of the most advanced combat searches and tracking radars in the world.
Sergio Canavero claims he’s carried out the world’s first human head transplant; a surgery he’s been hyping up for over two years. Canavero claims to have successfully completed the head transplant using corpses. While that would technically demonstrate the attachment (or reattachment) of nerves and blood vessels, there are many other factors that would prohibit the procedure from having any real practical application.
“I work with our group here that does face transplants at NYU, and we can barely make those work,” Arthur Caplan, founding head of the division of medical ethics at NYU School of Medicine, told Futurism “A head transplant, to people here, is ludicrous. We can barely keep the face from being rejected, much less all the tissues of the head.”
“The way he talks about head transplants, it’s like unscrewing a bulb from a socket and putting in a new one,” explained Caplan. “But obviously the chemistry where the new brain will be exposed, and the neural inputs, will be very different. Even if you could keep somebody alive – which I doubt, because of immune rejection – but even if you could, I think they’d be insane, because the brain wouldn’t be able to process the new environment. I think that’s a limit on head transplants, generally.”
Caplan doesn’t expect to see a successful head transplant any time soon, if ever. He does see regenerative medicine and research into artificial intelligence as being more likely to bear fruit in this area. Head transplants, meanwhile, may one day be compared to archaic procedures like purging and leeching.
Spinal Cords
“It’s despicable and dangerous for real science,” said Caplan. “I say that because it’s basically been announcements by press release. He’s set up shop in China because no one else in the world has any credence in what he’s doing. He hasn’t demonstrated in animals that he can do what he says he can do, and there’s no reason not to.”
Caplan refers to the fact that while Canavero has performed surgeries on monkeys and rats, there are doubts about his claims to have reconnected the spinal cord, and he has not successfully kept the animals alive or conscious for any significant amount of time.
Canavero’s purported monkey head transplant did not include any attempt to reconnect the spinal cord, meaning that even if the surgery went off without a hitch, the patient would be paralyzed. In terms of real-world benefit, though, if someone was to successfully demonstrate the ability to repair a spinal cord, that would have more utility to medicine than a head transplant procedure.
“If he did know how to make the spinal cord regenerate, there are literally millions of people worldwide with damaged and severed spinal cords,” Caplan explained. “Instead of yammering on incessantly about head transplants, if he had something to help them, he should be using it with them – that’s the natural place to go.”
Collateral Damage
Claims like those being made by Canavero muddy the waters of what’s actually possible with modern technology. That doesn’t just affect people working to advance the field of transplantation; it also impacts the wider scientific community.
“People believe that scientists who are using powerful technologies will just screw around with them, and it gives a bad reputation to mainstream scientists,” said Caplan. “It looks like they’ll try cloning, or they’ll try this, or they’ll try to make superbabies. You keep saying , ‘well, the technology isn’t close for any of those things in humans.’ But then this guy comes along and gets a lot of press attention, and so he casts doubt on the trustworthiness of mainstream scientists and doctors.”
“He also does one other thing, which is that he offers false hope,” Caplan added. “There are people out there with paralyzed bodies, and people dying of terrible diseases, who think, ‘maybe I could transplant my head.’ It’s cruel to them, and then they kind of get angry with disappointment when the technology doesn’t deliver.”
Scientists and doctors who aim to push the limits of modern medicine have ethical responsibilities. If they attempt to misrepresent the scope of their work, they can harm not just their peers but the very people their research is purported to benefit.
Chinese AI-powered robot Xiaoyi took the country's medical licensing examinations and passed, according to local reports. Xiaoyi is just one example of how much China is keen on using AI to make a number of industries more efficient.
A ROBOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Experts generally agree that, before we might consider artificial intelligence (AI) to be truly intelligent —that is, on a level on par with human cognition— AI agents have to pass a number of tests. And while this is still a work in progress, AIs have been busy passing other kinds of tests.
Xiaoyi, an AI-powered robot in China, for example, has recently taken the national medical licensing examination and passed, making it the first robot to have done so. Not only did the robot pass the exam, it actually got a score of 456 points, which is 96 points above the required marks.
This robot, developed by leading Chinese AI company iFlytek Co., Ltd., has been designed to capture and analyze patient information. Now, they’ve proven that Xiaoyi could also have enough medical know-how to be a licensed practitioner.
With both governments and private companies intent on putting AI to good use, one of the first fields in which AI technologies are being applied has been medical research and healthcare. Most are familiar with IBM’s Watson, which has made significant headway in AI-assisted cancer diagnosis and in improving patient care in hospitals.
In the same manner, iFlytek plans to have Xiaoyi assist human doctors in order to improve their efficiency in future treatments. “We will officially launch the robot in March 2018. It is not meant to replace doctors. Instead, it is to promote better people-machine cooperation so as to boost efficiency,” iFlytek chairman Liu Qingfeng told China Daily.
Concretely, iFlytek’s vision is to use AI to improve cancer treatment and help to train general practitioners, which China is sorely in need of. “General practitioners are in severe shortage in China’s rural areas. We hope AI can help more people access quality medical resource,” Qingfeng added.
In short, there’s no need to fear an AI takeover in the medical field, even though many worry that such advances will eliminate human jobs. In this case, it is quite the opposite, because this AI will work to augment the capabilities of its human counterparts instead of replace them. So, at least for now, you don’t have to worry about being referred to a robot doctor.

The planet Earth is set to have a very close encounter with a three-mile-wide asteroid in the week before Christmas, scientists have warned.
According to Russian astronomers, a giant space rock which is referred to as 3200 Phaethon is due to make a close encounter with the planet on December 17th. NASA has verified that this is the case and warned that the close brush with the asteroid could be potentially dangerous as the rock will only miss the orbit of Earth by two million miles – a very short distance in galactic terms.

This is considered to be a cause for concern as the asteroid is approximately half the size of Chicxulub, the asteroid which caused the extinction event that eradicated the dinosaurs. Therefore, space agencies will be monitoring the progress of the asteroid closely over the next month to ensure that it cannot cause any damage to the planet.
Phaethon is considered to be one of the most bizarre asteroids in this solar system, and scientists from all over the world have investigated it over the years. According to astronomers from the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University, it seems that the asteroid was once much larger than it currently is. However, its orbital pattern which takes it far closer to the sun than any other asteroid has caused it to crumble into smaller pieces over the generations. It has even been suggested that the asteroid could have once been a comet nucleus, a theory which is substantiated by its elongated orbit which sees it coming closer to the Sun than Mercury at some times and moving further away from the Sun than Mars at others.
The astronomers from the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University have suggested that the meteor shower engendered by this unusual asteroid is likely due to its crumbling state after so many close calls with the Sun. The asteroid is known for being the only asteroid to produce a regular meteor shower, a phenomenon which is associated with comets and has been a source of massive puzzlement to NASA scientists investigating it. 'What it comes down to is that the Geminid parent object is a mystery, ' said a spokesperson for the space agency.
The Geminids meteor shower will take place shortly before the asteroid by-passes the Earth on December 17th and is expected to light up the sky between December 13th and the 14th.
Ever since scientists have begun to study the orbits of the planets in this solar system, they have discovered the incredible variety in the length of years the planets experience.
While Earth takes a mere 365.25 days to complete a single orbit of the Sun, Mars takes nearly twice as long while the gas giants take between 11.86 and 164.8 years to make a single orbit. But despite knowing about this incredible variety in this solar system, scientists were still stunned to discover perhaps the most extremely diverse orbital patterns yet uncovered in a solar system rooted around a star known as CVSO 30.
CVSO 30 is located approximately 1200 light years from the planet Earth and has been a particular source of interest for astronomers because it has two candidate exoplanets. The planets orbiting CVSO 30 are enormous compared to the planets in this solar system and are described as being many times the mass of Jupiter, making them super-Jupiters.
According to Tobias Schmidt of the University of Hamburg, the Astrophysical Institute and University Observatory Jena, and the lead author of the paper on the discovery of the exoplanets, it is extremely unusual to find two exoplanet candidates with several times the mass of Jupiter orbiting a star as small as CVSO 30 which is believed to be fairly young. But even more surprisingly, the scientists discovered that despite the fact that the two exoplanets are fairly similar in size that one of the planets has an orbital period of less than eleven days whereas the other takes a phenomenal 27,000 years to orbit CVSO 30.
The bizarre differences in the orbital pattern of the two planets have led the scientists to attempt to investigate how this massive disparity could have come about. Professor Schmidt suggests that the two planets may have formed in a typical way around the star but because of the interaction of the gravitational forces and the two giant planets, they were forced into their current distanced orbits. However, he stresses that this merely conjecture at this point and the scientists working on the project intend to conduct further investigations to find out if this is the case.
The discovery of the planets is also notable for a different reason. The planets were discovered using a new technique in planet imaging.Until now, the vast majority of the 2000 exoplanets which have been discovered have been found using indirect methods including the Transit Method which uncovers planets by measuring the dimming effects they have on their parent star and the Radial Velocity Method which measures the gravitational force the planets exert on their star. However, these two planets were discovered using a technique called Direct Imagining.
In the past, Direct Imaging has not been considered an effective way of spotting exoplanets because planets are usually swamped by the light of the parent star and therefore are almost impossible to detect. However, it is preferred when exploring the remote regions of a star as it is considered to be more effective and new advances in technology have allowed scientists to probe far deeper than they ever have before using the Direct Imagining method.
Since various projects have begun to identify exoplanets throughout the universe, scientists have constantly been amazed at how diverse solar systems are. Many of the discoveries concerning exoplanets have completely revolutionized assumptions about how planets form around their parent stars, and it is believed that these discoveries will help to inform a new, comprehensive model of planet formation as time goes on.

Now a new study seems to suggest that this was not the case. Professor Arjun Berera authored the study from the School of Physics and Astronomy in Edinburgh and has come up with the suggestion that life on Earth might have started when streams of space dust that were traveling fast carried microscopic organisms to Earth. The professor found that interplanetary dust streams are not just capable of taking particles to Earth but also taking them away from Earth.

Interplanetary dust is made up of debris from asteroid collisions that occurred a long time ago, and it is pervasive in the solar system. Around 220,000 pounds of space dust is said to fall down onto Earth each day. The cosmic stream of dust travels together at around 44 miles per second.
The researchers came to the conclusion that the streams of dust are grazing Earth and colliding with particles of an organic nature that are found in the upper atmosphere. The small particles get trapped 93 miles or perhaps even higher in the atmosphere of the Earth and get knocked out with force that allows them to get out of the gravity of Earth. When the particles break free out of the Earths bounds the dust flows pick up and then carry hitchhikers that are microscopic and take them off through interplanetary space.
TARDIGRADES COULD HITCHHIKE TO ANOTHER PLANET
There are some plants, bacteria, and animals, which are known by the name of tardigrades, that are able to survive out in space and they could get caught up in the dust and then hitchhike over to another planet. The mechanism that was outlined in the study allowed for planets in the distance in the same solar system as Earth to exchange atmospheric particles with one another.
Berera said that the proposition that space dust might take organisms over long distances between planets in space brings about some exciting prospects about how life and atmospheres of planets originated. He went on to say that the streaming of fast space dust is typically found in the planetary systems and that it could be a common factor in proliferating life.
Dramatic footage shows the flaming UFO breaking up as it soared above the skies between Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada.
Some worried people thought it may have been an extraterrestrial object heading to Earth on Friday night.
The footage was posted on the AMS American Meteor Society YouTube – which was viewed over 12,000 times.

Bad news for microbes that want to make a home on Mars: A new study argues that dark streaks on the Martian surface are not caused by underground supplies of liquid water.
In 2015, observations by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter revealed trace amounts of water (mixed with heavy doses of salts) on the Red Planet's surface. These "hydrated salts" corresponded with dark streaks on Martian hillsides called recurring slope lineae (RSL), which researchers had already identified as possible sites of liquid water rising to the surface.

But the new study shows that those dark RSL could simply be flows of sand and other granular material, according to a statement from NASA. In addition, the authors provide more reasons why the liquid water explanation does not fit with certain features of RSL.
"We've thought of RSL as possible liquid water flows, but the slopes are more like what we expect for dry sand," Colin Dundas, a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Astrogeology Science Center and a lead author on the new study, said in the statement. "This new understanding of RSL supports other evidence that shows that Mars today is very dry."
However, neither study can fully explain all the features of the Martian RSL, and the authors of the new paper admit the mystery may not be solved until a rover or a human expedition can explore those regions directly.
Granular flows
Thousands of RSL sites have been identified on Martian slopes surface, in about 50 hilly regions spread out between the north and south midlatitudes, according to the statement from NASA. The streaks appear during warm seasons and shrink or disappear during winter. Similar features on Earth are only caused by "seeping water," officials said in the statement, but "how they form in the dry Martian environment remains unclear."
The new study offers an alternative explanation to flowing water.
When sand and other granular materials are lumped into piles, the material locks into place until the pile reaches a certain height. At that point, some of the grains begin to slip and flow smoothly down the sides, forming rivulets. Those rivers of material could appear darker than the material around them, according to the statement, and thus could explain the RSL.
This view of recurring slope lineae on the surface of Mars was constructed from observations by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The dark streaks here are up to few hundred yards, or meters, long. The image was produced by first creating a 3-D computer model (a digital terrain map) of the area based on stereo information from two HiRISE observations, and then draping an image over the land-shape model.

And there's another key piece of evidence that the authors point to in support of this hypothesis: For a given type of granular material (such as sand), there is a specific angle at which those rivulets can form, and it's known as the "angle of repose." The authors show that the RSL that have been observed so far only appear on hillsides that reach the angle of repose for sand dunes. If the RSL sites were created by water, the authors postulate that these features should also appear on gentler slopes.
"The RSL don't flow onto shallower slopes, and the lengths of these are so closely correlated with the dynamic angle of repose, it can't be a coincidence," Alfred McEwen, a professor of planetary geology at the University of Arizona, Tucson, said in the statement. McEwen is the HiRISE Principal Investigator and a co-author of the new report.
The research also relies on models of slope steepness using data from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on MRO. The paper includes examinations of 151 RSL features at 10 sites. Another study, published in March, suggested thatthe RSL were caused by "dry avalanches."
A home for life
The findings do not negate the detection of hydrated salts by MRO, and liquid water may still play a role in the formation and seasonal evolution of RSL streaks, according to the paper. But, similar to a 2016 study, they contend the hypothesis that the water comes from beneath the surface.
The authors propose that the water detected in the RSL is sucked from the thin Martian atmosphere, rather than supplied by underground reserves. The increase in hydration could cause changes in the granular material on these slopes that triggers some of the flow that creates the dark streaks. The dark regions could also be the result of "changes in hydration," according to the statement.
"Full understanding of RSL is likely to depend upon on-site investigation of these features," said MRO Project Scientist Rich Zurek. He noted, however, that if scientists could visit these RSL sites, they would still take precautions to prevent accidental contamination of the sites with Earth-based microbes. In other words, scientists will not completely rule out the possibility that microbes could be living in these RSL just yet.
Zurek added that "a full explanation of how these enigmatic features darken and fade still eludes us. Remote sensing at different times of day could provide important clues."
The study was published today (Nov. 20) in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Is our universe unique? From science fiction to science fact, there is a proposal out there that suggests that there could be other universes besides our own, where all the choices you made in this life played out in alternate realities. So, instead of turning down that job offer that took you from the United States to China, the alternate universe would show the outcome if you decided to venture to Asia instead.
The idea is pervasive in comic books and movies. For example, in the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot, the premise is that the Kirk and Spock portrayed by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are in an alternate timeline apart from the William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy versions of the characters.
The concept is known as a "parallel universe," and is a facet of the astronomical theory of the multiverse. There actually is quite a bit of evidence out there for a multiverse. First, it is useful to understand how our universe is believed to have come to be.
Arguing for a multiverse
Around 13.7 billion years ago, simply speaking, everything we know of in the cosmos was an infinitesimal singularity. Then, according to theBig Bang theory, some unknown trigger caused it to expand and inflate in three-dimensional space. As the immense energy of this initial expansion cooled, light began to shine through. Eventually, the small particles began to form into the larger pieces of matter we know today, such as galaxies, stars and planets.
One big question with this theory is: are we the only universe out there. With our current technology, we are limited to observations within this universe because the universe is curved and we are inside the fishbowl, unable to see the outside of it (if there is an outside.)
1. We don't know what the shape of space-time is exactly. One prominent theory is that it is flat and goes on forever. This would present the possibility of many universes being out there. But with that topic in mind, it's possible that universes can start repeating themselves. That's because particles can only be put together in so many ways. More about that in a moment.
2. Another theory for multiple universes comes from "eternal inflation." Based on research from Tufts University cosmologist Alexander Vilenkin, when looking at space-time as a whole, some areas of space stop inflating like the Big Bang inflated our own universe. Others, however, will keep getting larger. So if we picture our own universe as a bubble, it is sitting in a network of bubble universes of space. What's interesting about this theory is the other universes could have very different laws of physics than our own, since they are not linked.
3. Or perhaps multiple universes can follow the theory of quantum mechanics (how subatomic particles behave), as part of the "daughter universe" theory. If you follow the laws of probability, it suggests that for every outcome that could come from one of your decisions, there would be a range of universes — each of which saw one outcome come to be. So in one universe, you took that job to China. In another, perhaps you were on your way and your plane landed somewhere different, and you decided to stay. And so on.
4. Another possible avenue is exploring mathematical universes, which, simply put, explain tht the structure of mathematics may change depending in which universe you reside. "Aa mathematical structure is something that you can describe in a way that's completely independent of human baggage," said theory-proposer Max Tegmark of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as quoted in the 2012 article. "I really believe that there is this universe out there that can exist independently of me that would continue to exist even if there were no humans."
5. And last but not least as the idea of parallel universes. To go back to the idea that space-time is flat, the number of possible particle configurations in multiple universes would be limited to 10^10^122 distinct possibilities, to be exact. So, with an infinite number of cosmic patches, the particle arrangements within them must repeat — infinitely many times over. This means there are infinitely many "parallel universes": cosmic patches exactly the same as ours (containing someone exactly like you), as well as patches that differ by just one particle's position, patches that differ by two particles' positions, and so on down to patches that are totally different from ours.
Arguing against a parallel universe
Not everyone agrees with the parallel universe theory, however. A 2015 article on Medium by astrophysicist Ethan Siegal agreed that space-time could go on forever in theory, but said that there are some limitations with that idea.
The key problem is the universe is just under 14 billion years old. So our universe's age itself is obviously not infinite, but a finite amount. This would (simply put) limit the number of possibilities for particles to rearrange themselves, and sadly make it less possible that your alternate self did get on that plane after all to see China.
Also, the expansion at the beginning of the universe took place exponentially because there was so much "energy inherent to space itself," he said. But over time, that inflation obviously slowed — those particles of matter created at the Big Bang are not continuing to expand, he pointed out. Among his conclusions: that means that multiverses would have different rates of inflation and different times (longer or shorter) for inflation. This decreases the possibilities of universes similar to our own.
"Even setting aside issues that there may be an infinite number of possible values for fundamental constants, particles and interactions, and even setting aside interpretation issues such as whether the many-worlds-interpretation actually describes our physical reality," Siegal said, "the fact of the matter is that the number of possible outcomes rises so quickly — so much faster than merely exponentially — that unless inflation has been occurring for a truly infinite amount of time, there are no parallel universes identical to this one."
But rather than seeing this lack of other universes as a limitation, Siegal instead takes the philosophy that it shows how important it is to celebrate being unique. He advises to make the choices that work for you, which "leave you with no regrets." That's because there are no other realities where the choices of your dream self play out; you, therefore, are the only person that can make those choices happen.µ

With 'Mission 1' Complete, Planet Turns Focus to Data Analysis

Speaking at the NewSpace Europe conference here Nov. 17, Kam Shahid, director of space operations for Planet, said the company had achieved "Mission 1" for the company, dating back to its founding seven years ago, of taking images of the Earth's entire landmass once per day.
That constellation, Shahid said, produces large volumes of data. "This is what imaging the Earth every day really means: 1.4 million images every day at 29 megapixels," he said. Planet downlinks six terabytes of data per day, he said, with a total coverage area of 300 million square kilometers.
With the satellite constellation in place, the challenge for Planet now is to turn the volume of images it produces into data products. "This is what we see for the future for our company, turning data into insights," he said. "We have focused extensively on building a pipeline which can take all of this data, process it and get valuable information out."
That approach, he said, involves the use of machine learning technologies for automated analyses of images. An example he gave was using images to count the number of cars in a lot. The high-resolution images from SkySat images allow the algorithms to count individual cars. In medium-resolution, but more frequent, Dove images, the algorithms can instead measure the area of lots filled by cars, and from that estimate the number of cars.
That can be used for a wide range of applications. "The idea is that you can use our imagery and ask questions and get answers," he said. "This is what the future is and this is where Planet is moving. We are moving into analytics."
Planet is not alone in emphasizing analytics. Several other companies are developing systems to transform the rapidly expanding volume of satellite images into data products. Ursa Space Systems raised $7 million in a Series A round last month to expand its products, which are based on synthetic aperture radar imagery it purchases. Other companies in the sector include Descartes Labs, Orbital Insight and SpaceKnow.
Shahid said later that Planet will develop its machine learning capabilities in-house, a philosophy it has followed for its Dove satellites and other key technologies. Customers, he said, would be able to bring in their own data sets to combine with the analysis of Planet imagery. Planet will continue to partner with other companies for analytics, company spokesman Trevor Hammond said Nov. 18, noting it has "numerous paying customers" in such arrangements currently.
"The goal is to provide users ways to get the information they need to make smarter decisions," Will Marshall, the co-founder and chief executive of Planet, said in a company blog post this month about the Mission 1 milestone. "In short, Planet will index physical change on Earth the same way Google indexed the internet. Imagine the possibilities."

An MIT team won first place for urban design with the Redwood Forest, a series of woodsy habitats enclosed in open, public domes that would reside on the Martian surface.

A team of engineers and architects from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has won the top prize for architecture in 2017’s international Mars City Design competition, which asks participants to design habitats that could one day be built on the Red Planet.
The competition, sponsored by both NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), is one of many that asks participants to come up with creative solutions to the problems these agencies anticipate in the journey to Mars.
MIT’s winning design, which the team calls Redwood Forest, is a collection of "tree habitats" connected through a system of tunnels called "roots." The roots would provide safe access to other tree habitats, private spaces and "shirt-sleeve transportation," according to a statement from MIT. The tunnels would also provide protection from cosmic radiation, micrometeorite impacts and extreme changes in temperature.
Each dome-shaped tree habitat would house up to 50 people, and the team's vision calls for building about 200 of them, to support a settlement of 10,000 pioneers. The structures would include private and public spaces as well as plants and water harvested from the northern plains of Mars, according to the statement.
"On Mars, our city will physically and functionally mimic a forest, using local Martian resources such as ice and water, regolith (or soil), and sun to support life," MIT postdoctoral researcher Valentina Sumini said in the statement. Sumini and MIT assistant professor Caitlin Mueller led the team, which also included nine students.
“Every tree habitat in Redwood Forest will collect energy from the sun and use it to process and transport the water throughout the tree, and every tree is designed as a water-rich environment,” says winning team member Geroge Lordos MBA '00.

"Designing a forest also symbolizes the potential for outward growth as nature spreads across the Martian landscape," Sumini added.
Also like a forest, the "trees" in this collective would be vital in transporting water throughout the system.

"Every tree habitat in Redwood Forest will collect energy from the sun and use it to process and transport the water throughout the tree, and every tree is designed as a water-rich environment," George Lordos, a Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics doctoral student who worked on the project, said in the same statement.
Each dome would have soft cells that would fill with water to help protect inhabitants from radiation, manage heat loads and supply water to both fish and produce farms. The domes would also have solar panels to generate clean energy for charging hydrogen fuel cells and splitting water to create rocket fuel, Lordos said.

The Redwood Forest design could also have uses here on Earth, team members said. A similar architecture could make harsh environments like those at high altitudes and even the seafloor livable, they said in the statement, and the habitat’s proposed gardening system could cut down on land and transportation costs.
Still, the goal of Mars City Design is ultimately to help agencies like NASA and ESA come up with viable ways for humans to settle the Red Planet.
"It is not enough to just travel to Mars and survive; now we must develop a way in which we can sustainably live and love on Mars," the competition’s website reads. "It is essential that we call on a new generation of thinkers and innovators to make this a reality."
