Smart aliens might live within 33,000 light-years of Earth. A new study explains why we haven’t found them yet.
The universe has so many galaxies, stars, planets, and moons that many scientists believe intelligentaliensshould exist within detectable range of Earth.
Hundreds of billions of galaxies drift through the visible universe, each one harboring hundreds of billions of stars, and each of those stars in turn shelters roughly a handful of planets. Even if the trillion-or-so planets in every galaxy aren’t habitable, countless water-rich moons orbiting these lifeless worlds might be.
And yet, in spite of these numbers, humans have yet to identify any signals from intelligent aliens. The prescient question that physicist Enrico Fermi posed in 1950 – “where is everybody?” – remains unanswered.
However, an upcoming study in The Astronomical Journal, which we learned about from MIT Technology Review, suggests humanity has barely sampled the skies, and thus has no grounds to be cynical.
According to the paper, all searches for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, have examined barely a swimming pool’s worth of water from a figurative ocean of signal space.
“We haven’t really looked much,” Shubham Kanodia, a graduate student in astronomy who co-wrote the study, said during a NASA “technosignatures” workshop in Houston, Texas on September 26.
The study suggests that somewhere in that ocean of space – right now, within the Milky Way galaxy – intelligent aliens might be saying, “hello, we are here.”
But we’d have no way of knowing, at least not yet.
Defining a ‘cosmic haystack’ in the search for aliens

Over the past 60 years, multiple SETI projects have looked and continue to look for alien signals. Some scan large swaths of the sky for powerful signals, while others target individual star systems for weaker signals.
Yet aside from a few anomaly signals that never repeated (like the “Wow!” detection of 1977), these searches have turned up empty-handed.
Kanodia and his colleagues at Penn State University wanted to know how much of the figurative “cosmic haystack” SETI projects have covered, and to what extent they could improve the hunt for the alien “needle.”
The group agrees with famous SETI astronomer Jill Tarter, who said in 2010 that it’s silly to conclude intelligent aliens do not exist nearby just because we haven’t yet found their beacons. Even if such signals exist and are aimed right at Earth, her thinking goes, we’ve scanned so little of the sky and may not be looking for the right type of signal, or for long enough, to find them.
“Suppose I tell you there’s a cool thing happening in Houston right now,” Kanodia said during his NASA talk. “I do not tell you where it is. I do not tell you when it is happening. I do not tell you what it is. Is it in a book store? Is it a music concert? I give you absolutely no priors. It would be a difficult thing to try and find it.”
He added: “Houston, we have a problem. We do not know what we’re looking for … and we don’t know where to start.”
In their study, Kanodia and his colleagues built a mathematical model of what they consider a reasonably sized cosmic haystack.
Their haystack is a sphere of space nearly 33,000 light-years in diameter, centered around Earth. This region captures part of Milky Way’s bustling core, as well as some giant globular clusters of stars above and below our home galaxy.
They also picked eight dimensions of a search for aliens – factors like signal transmission frequency, bandwidth, power, location, repetition, polarization, and modulation (i.e. complexity) – and defined reasonable limits for each one.
“This leads to a total 8D haystack volume of 6.4 × 10116 m5Hz2 s/W,” the authors wrote.
That is 6.4 followed by 115 zeros – as MIT Technology review described it, “a space of truly gargantuan proportions.”

Kanodia and his colleagues then examined the past 60 years’ worth of SETI projects and reconciled them against their haystack.
The researchers determined that humanity’s collective search for extraterrestrials adds up to about 0.00000000000000058% of the haystack’s volume.
“This is about a bathtub of water in all of Earth’s oceans,” Kanodia said. “Or about a five-centimeter-by-five-centimeter patch of land on all of Earth’s surface area.”
Those numbers make humanity’s search efforts seem feeble. But Kanodia views it as an opportunity – especially because modern telescopes are getting better at scanning more objects with greater sensitivity and speed. For example, he said, a 150-minute search this year by the Murchison Widefield Array covered a larger percentage of the haystack than any other SETI project in history.
“That’s the purpose of this haystack … to help better-inform future search strategies,” Kanodia said.
He also noted that the team’s calculations assume there is only one alien civilization within range of Earth, and not any more than that. But more than one may exist relatively close by.
“In the ocean analogy, we do not have to drain the entire ocean to find a fish,” he said. “In the Houston analogy, if there were two cool things, you wouldn’t have to look as hard.”
Still, there’s no guarantee that a figurative fish or needle or cool thing is out there at all.
Another group of scientists, this one at Oxford University, recently took a different approach to the question of aliens. Instead of focusing on the likelihood of finding “technosignatures” that could be detected, they examined the likelihood that intelligent alien life exists at all.
The Oxford researchers examined dozens of authoritative studies about variables in the Drake Equation. The team then analyzed the results and calculated a bleak 2-in-5 chance that humans may be entirely alone in the Milky Way galaxy.

A team of German scientists has announced an unprecedented discovery that has been hiding beneath the ice of Antartica for millions of years.
Researchers from Kiel University in Germany say they have discovered that Antartica holds the secrets of continents that preceded the creation of the ice-covered South Pole.
Lead scientist Jörg Ebbing, said that the vast continent contains the cores of other continents that existed before Antartica was formed.
“This observation leads back to the break-up of the supercontinent Gondwana and the link of Antarctica to the surrounding continents,” Ebbing said in a statement.
Westernjournal.comreports: Scientists believe that at one time, all of the Southern Hemisphere’s continents were part of one vast super continent called Gondwana. Current theory suggests the continents split apart 180 million years ago.
Some of the evidence for that is found in an area known as the Mawson Craton, which has a matching piece of land that is geologically similar in southern Australia.
The new research did not come from digging into the ice that hold Antarctica captive, but through a sophisticated use of the Gravity field and Ocean Circulation Explorer satellite that generated data about gravity and software to look below the ice to see what stories the rock would tell. The satellite orbited the Earth from 2009 through 2013.
“The satellite gravity data can be combined with seismological data to produce more-consistent images of the crust and upper mantle in 3D, which is crucial to understand how plate tectonics and deep mantle dynamics interact,” Ebbing said.
“These gravity images are revolutionizing our ability to study the least understood continent on Earth, Antarctica,” said Fausto Ferraccioli, the science leader of geology and geophysics at the British Antarctic Survey, according to the European Space Agency.
Ferraccioli said that scientists now know the eastern and western halves of Antarctica are very different.
“The new images show us the fundamental difference in the lithosphere beneath East and West Antarctica in agreement with previous seismic findings,” Ferraccioli said, according to Smithsonian.
“We also found a greater degree of complexity in the interior of East Antarctica than is apparent from current seismic views, suggesting that this part of the continent is a mosaic of old cratons and orogens. Some of these regions have clear ties to formerly adjacent continents in the supercontinent Gondwana—such as Australia, India and Africa,” he said.
“In East Antarctica, we see an exciting mosaic of geological features that reveal fundamental similarities and differences between the crust beneath Antarctica and other continents it was joined to until 160 million years ago,” Ferraccioli said, according to Space.com.
What they found was that in addition to areas where once-similar regions are now divided, there are regions called orogens, where pieces of continents collided, causing mountains to form.
In one area where the crust was very thin, researchers found evidence for what’s known as a mantle plume, in which volcanic material from the Earth’s core strains against the Earth’s surface, sometimes causing volcanoes.
“It is exciting to see that direct use of the gravity gradients, which were measured for the first time ever with GOCE, leads to a fresh independent look inside Earth – even below a thick sheet of ice, said ESA scientist Roger Haagmans.
“It also provides context of how continents were possibly connected in the past before they drifted apart owing to plate motion,” he said.

A scientific study aligns with the biblical account of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed by fire and brimstone from the heavens.
The book of Genesis tells the story of God sending two angels to save Lot and his family from a city where men demanded to “be intimate” with visiting men, one of the clearest biblical condemnations of homosexuality. In response,God “rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah sulfurous fire … out of heaven.”
Science News reported archaeologist Phillip Silvia of Trinity Southwest University in Albuquerque has concluded a “superheated blast from the skies … obliterated cities and farming settlements north of the Dead Sea around 3,700 years ago.”
Siliva found “radiocarbon dating and unearthed minerals that instantly crystallized at high temperatures indicate a massive airburst caused by a meteor that exploded in the atmosphere instantaneously destroyed civilization in a 25-kilometer-wide circular plain called Middle Ghor.”
Science News said the event “also pushed a bubbling brine of Dead Sea salts over once-fertile farm land, Silvia and his colleagues suspect.”
Silvia reported the conclusions recently at an annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research.
“Excavations at five large Middle Ghor sites, in what’s now Jordan, indicate that all were continuously occupied for at least 2,500 years until a sudden, collective collapse toward the end of the Bronze Age. Ground surveys have located 120 additional, smaller settlements in the region that the researchers suspect were also exposed to extreme, collapse-inducing heat and wind. An estimated 40,000 to 65,000 people inhabited Middle Ghor when the cosmic calamity hit, Silvia said,” Science News said.
Silvia has been excavating in the area for more than a decade, and radiocarbon dating suggests the mud-brick walls suddenly disappeared at once, “leaving only stone foundations.”
“What’s more, the outer layers of many pieces of pottery from same time period show signs of having melted into glass. Zircon crystals in those glassy coats formed within one second at extremely high temperatures, perhaps as hot as the surface of the sun, Silvia said,” according to the report.
And tiny bits of rock were found on pottery fragments, suggesting it “rained down.”
Researchers likened it to an event in Siberia in 1908 in which an apparent meteor exploded in the air, flattening 2,000 square kilometers of forest.
Another incident in Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013, injured some 1,600 people.
Silvia and his team concluded the “destruction not only of Tall el-Hammam (Sodom), but also its neighbors (Gomorrah and the other cities of the plain) was most likely caused by a meteoritic airburst event.”
“The scientific explanation clearly reflects the biblical description of the destruction of the twin cities of evil located in the same area,” he wrote.
SputnikNews noted the Bible says the ancient cities were “wiped away by God for the sinful behavior of their people.”
The report says modern scientists call the events a “major calamity.”
It said the impact also pushed salty water from the Dead Sea onto land, devastating the soil and the once-fertile region’s ability to produce crops.

WETENSCHAP Vliegen we straks op ionische wind? Fysici zijn er alvast in geslaagd om onbemande vliegtuigjes te laten vliegen zonder bewegende delen. Experts vergelijken het met de vlucht van de gebroeders Wright.
Ruim een eeuw geleden, op 17 december 1903, vloog de Flyer van de gebroeders Wright twaalf seconden lang boven de duinen van Kitty Hawk. ‘Kennelijk zijn ze erin geslaagd zichzelf van de grond te tillen met een motorisch toestel’, meldde het tijdschrift Nature destijds. Nu schrijft het vakblad over een nieuwe korte vlucht die wel eens net zo historisch zou kunnen worden.
Amerikaanse fysici hebben voor het eerst een toestel gebouwd dat vliegt zonder bewegende delen en wordt voortgedreven door zogeheten ionische wind. Hun onbemande vliegtuigje maakte vluchten van acht à negen tellen waarin het telkens zestig meter aflegde.
“Dit opent de mogelijkheden voor een nieuwe generatie vliegtuigen”, zeggen de onderzoekers in een persbericht. “Vliegtuigen die stil zijn, mechanisch simpel en geen uitlaatgassen produceren.”

Het idee van de ionische wind stamt al uit de tijd van de gebroeders Wright zelf. Leg twee elektrodes aan met een flink spanningsverschil. De positieve elektrode ‘zuigt’ alle elektronen weg van de omringende (stikstof)moleculen in de lucht. Die zijn daardoor positief geladen en worden aangetrokken door de negatieve elektrode even verderop. Doordat ze onderweg nog meer moleculen ioniseren ontstaat er een heuse luchtstroom.
Maar uit proeven in de jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw bleek dat die ionische wind veel te zwak was om een vliegtuig van de grond te tillen. Het idee verdween in een diepe la totdat Steven Barrett van het MIT in het Amerikaanse Cambridge het er tien jaar terug weer uithaalde. Barrett was als kind gefascineerd door de futuristische ruimteveren uit ‘Star Trek’ die moeiteloos en stil door de lucht zoefden.
Toen hij op de ionische wind – ook wel de elektroaerodynamische voortstuwing genoemd – stuitte, besefte hij dat hij het liftvermogen kon verbeteren door meer spanning uit de batterijen te halen en door een ontwerp te kiezen dat optimaal gebruikmaakte van de wind. Met lichtgewichtmaterialen en speciale omvormers kon hij zijn batterijen opstuwen tot 40.000 volt, terwijl een computerprogramma de ideale vorm uitrekende.
Drones
Een spanwijdte van vijf meter, een gewicht van 2,5 kilo, terwijl de stroomdraden om de voor- en achterzijdes van de vleugels gewikkeld zijn. In de plaatselijke sporthal maakte het toestel tien geslaagde testvluchten.
Barrett hoopt dat zijn vondst ooit de gehele luchtvaart verovert, maar dat duurt zeker nog enige decennia. Voor de kortere termijn dacht hij aan stille drones en aan hybride vliegtuigen die van de ionische wind een extra zetje kregen.
Het rendement valt nu nog tegen; het toestel zet 2,5 procent van de energie uit de batterijen om in vliegkracht, maar de theorie leert dat die efficiëntie bij normale kruissnelheden kan oplopen naar 50 procent. Vergeet niet, schrijft Nature, dat de vlucht van de gebroeders Wright destijds weinig indruk maakte. Niemand had toen een idee van de huidige luchtvaart.

These holes will stay there up to 15 minutes after the UFO passes through...as stated by pilots and airline employees at the O'hare Airport in 2006. So, UFOs do break through the clouds by accident. Their systems will cause the cloud to disappear when activated. Its no surprise that this one is partly revealed. Here is some raw footage of a UFO falling from the sky over California this week. The UFO is glowing brightly and slowly lowering itself down from the sky. At first it looks like a meteor, but its falling too slow to be one. Baffling footage to say the least. The fact that two of them exist and are following one another means they are watching out for on another. A wingman of sorts, as they have in the US Navy for pilots to keep them out of trouble. Obviously intelligently controlled.

On November 22, 2018 while filming a thunderstorm the witness was able to capture a huge boomerang v-shaped UFO that was hovering nearby the thunderstorm and became visible when it was suddenly hit by a lightning strike.
Even though little is known about this craft it is quite possible that it was a black TR3B a man-made secret craft.
Probably there are several types of the mysterious TR3B because several days earlier, on November 19, 2018, a huge de-cloaked UFO has been caught on camera while moving in the sky of Long Island, New York, see image below. Watch Video.
Some people say that these UFOs are of extraterrestrial origin but let's not forget that our technology is much more advanced than NASA and world governments are having us believe, just think about the "Secret Space Fleet" discovered by Gary McKinnon after hacking into 97 United States military and NASA computers.
I suppose that the craft being hit by a lightning strike as well as the craft above Long Island, New York are secret man-made craft equipped with alien technology and part of a secret government/military project.

I seen a Orb shaped thing in the air right before sunrise seen small objects next to it.
Ok so I was on my way back from my work lunch grabbing some McDonalds and seen a bright orb shape in the sky luckily I was almost to the place I park. I got out and started to records the situation. I noticed that there were not any other stars able to be seen but I did see some smaller objects flying around the area kind of looked like a mothership of some sorts. My camera on my phone really sucks but I ended up recording as much as I could before it disappeared in the clouds. Tried to see it on the other end but unable to. It was def strange due to the fact of never noticing something like this.
I have heard some good things looking forward to seeing if any experts can edit the video to see a bit more or know the reason this occurred. I know bringing this stuff to your guy’s awareness helps research.

A science fiction author and amateur UFO hunter claims he has got hold of an alien skull.
Li Jianmin, 55, made the astonishing revelation at a seminar in the Chinese capital Beijing.
He said the 'skull' was brown in colour and about 16cm in diameter, according to local media.
Unlike human skulls, the supposed extraterrestrial one had two "different layers", he added.
The other-worldly artifact originally came from a street seller in the Inner Mongolia region and was bought by a private collector.
The buyer was then reading one of Li's sci-fi novels when he came across an illustration of an alien skull which looked remarkably like the one he had just bought.

After the collector got in touch with Li, the UFO enthusiast spent four months examining the find.
He has now produced a 103-page study in a bid to provide evidence that the 'skull' is in fact from outer space.
Li said he had used high-tech scientific methods to test the 'skull'.
He carried out Raman spectroscopy - which creates a "fingerprint" to identify which exact molecules are present in a sample - and atomic force microscopy, a technique which can see things 1000 times smaller than ordinary microscopes.

He then compared his findings with other supposed alien skulls discovered elsewhere in the world.
But when asked by reporters, Li admitted he had not yet done a DNA test, which could prove if the cranium is actually from a creature on Earth.
"Paying for DNA analysis is around 100,000 yuan," he said, which is about £11,200.

Discovered in Chile’s Atacama Desert in 2003, this tiny, 6-inch-long mummy, with its pointed head and atypical number of ribs, stoked theories that aliens have visited Earth. Scientists have had genetic proof that the remains are human since 2013, and a new genetic analysis reveals that mutations in genes related to growth might explain the mummy’s atypical bones.
The results, which have been making headlines, are a reminder that the truth may well be out there — but it isn’t aliens. A series of discoveries this past year make it clear that, sadly, it never is.
1. SAD BUT TRUE
Scientists have struggled to explain why this mummy, known as Ata, is the size of a fetus and yet has bones as developed as those of a six- to eight-year-old child, Science reported in 2013. The new analysis of Ata’s DNA, published last week in the journal Genome Research, reports mutations in seven genes key for human growth.
These mutations could explain why Ata’s bones developed so quickly, Gary Nolan, an immunologist at Stanford University and co-author of the study, told National Geographic. He suspects that the story is much sadder and more human than an extraterrestrial visitation: someone gave birth to a stillborn fetus several decades ago and buried her in the desert. “The alien hype was silly pseudoscience promoted for media attention,” paleoanthropologist and anatomist William Jungers told National Geographic. “This paper puts that nonsense and poor little Ata to bed.”
2. A BIZARRE DEEP SPACE SIGNAL-
In the summer of 2017, astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory picked up a strange radio signal that seemed to be coming from a small red dwarf star called Ross 128. But the source of the signal was a mystery: a solar flare on Ross 128 might have produced it, but the frequency of the radio waves didn’t quite fit that theory. Could it have been a deep space call for ET? No such luck. The astronomers discovered a week later that the signal originated much closer to home — most likely from satellites in high geostationary orbit in the same part of the sky as Ross 128.

3. JUST DUST
The wild flickerings of star KIC 8462852, also known as Tabby’s star, suggest that something occasionally passes in front of it and blocks out as much as 20 percent of its light. The flickerings have no clear pattern, and whatever is blocking the star’s light probably isn’t a celestial body like a planet. Some have suggested alien megastructures or some sort of extraterrestrial solar panel might be passing in front of the star instead.
But in January 2018, a team of astronomers reported that something much more ordinary is probably to blame for the star’s unusual behavior: a bunch of dust could be surrounding the star and filtering its light. “Weird stars that have dust coming from somewhere isn’t as much of a headline grabber,” Jason Wright, an astronomer at Penn State University and one of the study’s authors, told The Verge’s Loren Grush at the time. But there’s still some mystery left: we don’t know where exactly the dust is coming from.

4. THE GREAT PYRAMID’S GIANT VOID
In November 2017, scientists reported the discovery of a vast empty cavity inside the Great Pyramid at Giza. Using a kind of souped-up X-ray, an international team of researchers tracked subatomic particles called muons that plummet to Earth at nearly the speed of light. Since muons can pass through the air more easily than they can travel through dense stone, the researchers were able to discover previously unknown cracks and cavities — like the 100-foot-long cavern they called the “Big Void.”
The researchers still don’t know the precise shape of the cavity or why it’s there, but study co-author Mehdi Tayoubi said in a press briefing that they suspect that this cavity was built on purpose (by humans). Because, friends: it’s never aliens.

Je regardais la caméra de la station spatiale en direct quand j’ai remarqué un OVNI triangulaire surgir de nulle part. La lumière frappant le satellite et l’OVNI était de la lumière infrarouge et aussi l’angle du soleil a fait que l’OVNI s’est révélé pendant quelques minutes. L’OVNI correspond parfaitement à la vitesse de la station spatiale et du satellite, mais à ce moment-là, le satellite se trouvait en fait à une centaine de mètres de la station spatiale. Plus tard, ils ont changé de caméra et j’ai vu à quel point le satellite s’était éloigné. La caméra est équipée de filtres infrarouges, qu’elle semble avoir utilisés… Je dis cela parce que les filtres infrarouges donnent une teinte rose pourpre aux vidéos et aux photos, comme nous le voyons ici. Nos yeux ne peuvent pas voir l’infrarouge, mais les caméras avec filtres le peuvent. C’est pourquoi nous voyons apparaître l’OVNI occulté pendant un bref instant.
Photographer Reuben Wu creates images that reveal an alien splendor in natural and manmade landscapes across the globe. Previously he has explored the brilliant blue rivers of molten sulfurin Indonesian volcanoes, and photographed the thousands of glistening mirrors that compose Nevada’s SolarReserve. For his ongoing series Lux Noctis, the Chicago-based photographer utilizes modified drones as aerial light sources, illuminating obscure landscapes in a way that makes each appear new and unexplored.
Recently Wu has evolved his process of working with the drones to form light paths above topographical peaks in the mountainous terrain. “I see it as a kind of ‘zero trace’ version of land art where the environment remains untouched by the artist, and at the same time is presented in a sublime way which speaks to 19th century Romantic painting and science and fictional imagery,” said Wu to Colossal.
The light from his GPS-enabled drones create a halo effect around some of the presented cliffs and crests when photographed using a long exposure. Scientists Have Created A Star Trek-Like Plane That Flies Using “Ion Thrusters” And No Fuel
Scientists have taken a major step towards creating an aircraft of the future, one powered by an ion drive rather than using moving parts and fuel like conventional aircraft. In a paper published today in Nature, a team led by Steven Barrett from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) described how they created a so-called electroaerodynamic-powered plane, one that uses solid-state propulsion, meaning no propellers or jet engines with expendable fuel.
“The future of flight shouldn’t be things with propellers and turbines,” Barrett says in the video below. “[It] should be more like what you see in Star Trek, with a kind of blue glow and something that silently glides through the air.”
This breakthrough has not been possible before because our technology simply wasn’t advanced enough. As far back as 1921, scientists have been unsuccessful in trying to develop something similar, once mistaken for anti-gravity technology. But now the team say that key technology advances have enabled this to happen.
In their tests from 2016 to 2018, they created an aircraft with a wingspan of 5 meters (16 feet) that weighed 2.45 kilograms (5.4 pounds). It has a number of thin electrodes running across its wings, and at the front of these are thin wires, while at the back is an aerofoil – a curved surface to produce the lift, like on a regular plane wing.
The thin wires at the front are charged to positive 20,000 volts, while the aerofoil at the back is charged to negative 20,000 volts, creating a strong electric field. At the front, electrons are removed from nitrogen molecules in the air to produce ions. And as these accelerate to the back, they produce an ionic wind, which gives the plane thrust.
“The basic idea is that if you ionize air, which means removing an electron from it, you can accelerate the air with an electric field,” Barrett told IFLScience. “Like the force you get if you rub a balloon on your head.” Over the course of 10 test flights, the plane successful flew about 60 meters (200 feet) in about 12 seconds in a gym that the team hired to use, with a thrust efficiency of about 2.6 percent.
But as the speed increases, the efficiency of the system increases, just like in a regular plane. Theoretically, at 670 miles (1,080 kilometers) per hour, faster than a passenger jet, it is 50 percent efficient.
The technique is similar to how ion engines are used in some spacecraft to travel through space. “There are some significant similarities,” said Barrett. However, those spacecraft rely on ionizing a fuel – such as xenon gas – to produce thrust. The plane developed by the MIT team does not require propellant, instead relying only on the thin wires and an off the shelf lithium-polymer battery. At the moment the technology is limited, with the plane being very much a prototype. But the future possibilities are exciting. In the near-term, this thrust system could be used to power small drones, making them near-silent as they wouldn’t have any propellers like regular drones.
“I don’t yet know whether you’ll see large aircraft carrying people any time soon, but obviously I’d be very excited if that was the case,” Barrett said in the video.
Tests on the plane are still continuing, with the team now able to turn the plane in the air with a remote control rather than just flying in a straight line. Going forward, they want to try and remove the filaments that are hanging off the plane, with more tests to follow in the coming years.
At the end of their paper, the team compares the length of the plane’s flight (12 seconds) with that of the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in 1904 (11 seconds), the world’s first heavier-than-air flight, although that one did include a pilot.
While this flight is perhaps not on the same magnitude, some of the future possibilities are certainly exciting. “It is possible to fly planes that are solid state, and we demonstrated that for the first time,” said Barrett.

Archaeologists from Trinity Southwest University, a Christian higher educational institution in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have claimed civilisation in the Dead Sea region was destroyed 3,700 years ago following a meteor explosion in the atmosphere.
During the annual meeting of the American Schools of Oriental Research in Denver, Colorado, scholar Phillip Silvia reported the preliminary findings of their excavations in the area, which some scientists consider to be home to the Biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. The results suggest that cities and settlements in the Jordan Valley’s Middle Ghor region, where up to 65,000 people lived around that time, were obliterated with a powerful wave of heat, wind and tiny particles, the outlet Science News reports.
Waives also pushed salty water from the Dead Sea, which devastated the soil. The explosion, the researchers argue, “not only wiped out 100% of the Middle Bronze Age cities and towns, but also stripped agricultural soil from once-fertile fields,” Newsweek reports.
According to the scientists,
a low-altitude meteor explosion caused the catastrophe which wiped out the region, including the ancient city of Tall el-Hammam, where the researchers worked for years. Radiocarbon dating reportedly revealed that mud-brick walls suddenly disappeared in the Middle Ghor city, as only stone foundations remained.
A pottery surface found on the site was melted into glass, which may be a result of extreme temperatures. Following the alleged blast, people wouldn’t return to the region for 600-700 years.
Humanity has seen several space explosions before.
Five years ago, a near-Earth asteroid exploded in the atmosphere near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk, making headlines around the world and even worming its way into a Hollywood movie. This resulted in over 1,000 people being injured (mostly by broken glass from windows blown out by the shockwave). A more powerful blast came in 1908, when an asteroid exploded over a scarcely populated Siberian region on the Tunguska River, wiping away 2,000 square kilometres. SOURCE

What’s scarier than a star in our own Milky Way galaxy exploding? How about if that explosion is predicted to be one of the most energetic events in the universe? How about if that star happens to be named after Apep, the ancient Egyptian god of chaos and opponent of light? How about if that explosion is capable of blasting Earth with a massive dose of high energy gamma rays, the same type of radiation which turned Bruce Banner into the Incredible Hulk? That do it for ya?
Ok, so maybe the gamma ray blast isn’t probable – but it’s still possible. And actually a planet full of mutated Hulks running around smashing cars and leaving their footprints in rooftops sounds pretty awesome. Ultimately, it’s unknown exactly what the effects will be when Apep finally goes full on supernova and explodes and how Earth will be affected if at all. An international team of astronomers have published a study just this week which describes the discovery of a pair of extremely hot stars about 8,000 light-years away in the Milky Way. One of those, Apep, God of Chaos, teeters on the brink of supernova as you read this and has the potential to release an incredible long-duration gamma ray burst.
According to this new study, Apep is currently spinning so fast that it’s on the verge of ripping itself apart. “The rapid rotation puts Apep into a whole new class,” says study co-author Benjamin Pope of New York University. “Normal supernovae are already extreme events but adding rotation to the mix can really throw gasoline on the fire.” Of course, “on the verge” in astronomical terms means the supernova could occur any time in the next hundred thousand years or so.
Plenty of time to finish that novel. Maybe.
Gamma ray bursts are the most powerful explosions in the universe and at their peaks can be brighter than the entire rest of the universe. If the Earth did happen to get blasted by a massive gamma ray burst, it could strip away our ozone layer, shower the planet in radiation, and trigger a mass extinction. Luckily, these bursts tend to send out two high-energy and focused jets of radiation and Apep does not appear to be aimed at Earth, so the odds of one of those jets lining up with Earth are pretty small at the moment. Pretty small is still greater than zero, though!

According to co-author Peter Tuthill, an astronomer at the University of Sydney in Australia, Apep’s fate remains unknown– as do any possible effects the explosion could have on Earth:
Ultimately, we can’t be certain what the future has in store for Apep. The system might slow down enough so it explodes as a normal supernova rather than a gamma-ray burst. However, in the meantime, it is providing astronomers a ringside seat into beautiful and dangerous physics that we have not seen before in our galaxy.
Invest in super-stretchy purple pants before Apep bombards us all with a Hulk-sized dose of gamma rays. Seriously, though: how do Bruce Banner’s pants manage to grow with him when he exponentially increases in size while transforming into the Hulk? In reality, Hulk would be perpetually naked, and the self-confidence of men everywhere would be perpetually damaged. Some things you just can’t unsee – like a gamma ray burst brighter than the rest of the Universe combined.
Some believed that there was a natural explanation as to why the light coming from the star dimmed, while others claimed that a Dyson Sphere was responsible.
Experts theorised that an advanced alien race had constructed a megastructure around the star dubbed KIC 8462852, or more colloquially ‘Tabby’s star’ after its discoverer Tabetha Boyajian, to harness energy from their host star.
However, experts have now discovered a new star known as EPIC 204278916 which has similar characteristics to Tabby’s star in the sense that it too is showing regular dips in brightness.
Nonetheless, scientists believe they have finally cracked the mystery of Tabby’s star by studying EPIC.
Astrophysicist Ethan Siegel believes that they two may be surrounded by a protoplanetary disk that is blocking the view from Earth.
Protoplanetary disks are large disks of gas and dust that surrounds new born stars before planets have been created.

Mr Siegel writes in Starts With a Bang: “Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) are known to have the large flux dips that this weird star has, and they’ve recently been shown to come in a variety of inclination angles.”
It is believed that both stars are still young, with EPIC being under 11million years old, which in astronomical terms is still in its infancy – less than 0.8 per cent of the age of the universe.

Mr Siegel points to previous research which found infrared emissions coming from the disk surrounding EPIC – which is commonplace – but the alignment of the disk would make the radiation invisible to us on Earth – which is why scientists may not have been able to detect it and jumped to the conclusion that a megastructure is responsible.
He continues: “If [Tabby’s Star] turns out to be younger than is generally accepted (which many professional observers think it is), if it has a disk that happens to be edge on (so we don’t see the infrared flux), and if there’s either a warped inner disk or cometary-like debris, then what we’ve discovered is a new stage in the early evolution of a class of stars!
“This is also interesting, it just isn’t aliens like many were hoping for. But this brings up an incredibly important point: science isn’t about what you hope for, it’s about what the evidence points towards.”
