First CIA Director UFOs are Real

Admiral Roscoe Hillenkoetter stated

“It is time for the truth to be brought out… Behind the scenes high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense…. I urge immediate Congressional action to reduce the dangers from secrecy about unidentified flying objects._

Roscoe Henry Hillenkoetter (May 8, 1897 – June 18, 1982) was the third director of the post–World War II United States Central Intelligence Group (CIG), the third Director of Central Intelligence (DCI), and the first director of the Central Intelligence Agency created by the Nautical Security Act of 1947. He served as DCI and director of the CIG and the CIA from May 1, 1947, to October 7, 1950. His retirement from the US Navy came on 1 May 1957. Since his retirement, he was a member of the board of the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) from 1957 to 1962.

Black Book

From 1948 to 1950, Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter prepared weekly UFO sighting reports, of cases that he thought were the most essential for US Present Truman’s viewing, into physical Black Booklets. According to Majestic after Hillenkoetter’s replacement as DCI, the Watch Commander assumed tracking the “Black Book” UFO events. The Watch Committee’s involvement in tracking auspicious activity is noted in the Wilson meeting 2002 notes that were leaked in 2017.

Hillenkoetter expressed doubt that the newly formed CIA (September 1947) could be effective at both covert action and intelligence analysis.[3] As DCI, Hillenkoetter was periodically called to testify before US Congress. One instance concerned the CIA’s first major Soviet intelligence failure, the failure to predict the Soviet atomic bomb test on August 29, 1949. Hillenkoetter imprecisely replied that the CIA knew it would take the Soviets approximately five years to build the bomb, but the CIA misjudged when they started. The JCAE was not satisfied with Hillenkoetter’s answer, and his and the CIA’s reputation suffered among government heads in Washington.[4]

NICAP

After his retirement from the US Navy, Hillenkoetter was on NICAP’s board of governors from about 1957 until 1962. Donald E. Keyhoe, NICAP director and Hillenkoetter’s Naval Academy classmate, wrote that Hillenkoetter wanted public disclosure of UFO evidence.[

He did everything a retired officer can do to get the latest reports from the military and was a great help to NICAP in making them an important UFO organization. He was helpful in obtaining donations to pay important scientists to study the UFO problem.

Two years after Hillenkoetter’s death, a Majestic Document surfaced in 1984. It listed Hillenkoetter’s name as one of the Majestic 12 back in the year 1947. UFO enthusiasts of the early 1990s viewed Hillenkoetter with suspicion, as an MJ12 operative who probably steered. It ought to be noted that Hillenkoetter’s best-known statement on the subject of UFOs, was in 1960 in a letter to Congress, as reported in NICAP and is on record as stating: “Unknown objects are operating under intelligent control. It is imperative that we learn where UFOs come from and what their purpose is.” He resigned from the NICAP Board in Feb 1962

Alien Technological Civilizations

The Classical 1961 Drake Equation estimated there were 3,500 advanced civilizations existing in the Milky Way with numerous stars having multiple planets.. Italian Astronomer Claudio Maccone updated the equations in 2010, based on the 1000 planets found outside our Solar System and added more than 1,000 civilizations to the previous estimate. He calculates our galaxy may harbor 4,590 extraterrestrial civilizations with closest about two light years away. Using the standard variation concept, which shows how much variation exists from the average value the estimate is 11,195 advanced civilizations. In other words, besides human society, zero to 15,785 advanced technological societies could exist in the Milky Way. Scientists are to acknowledge that large numbers of advanced technological civilizations exist but feel they could not reach us due to the great distances. An advanced civilization would like have Time Travel an able to reach Earth in a few hours or days.

However, various scientists, engineers, cosmonauts, and astronaut’s claim we are being visited by some of these advanced civilizations. It is slowly being considered by the scientific community as at least a possibility. The hundreds of contactless and abductees sworn statements are generally ignored. The government has spent billions building aircraft based on alien technology as confirmed by Ben Rich the Director of the Lockheed Skunk works. Rich Andrews a close friend of Ben Rich claims he was told ‘An’ item“ — as opposed to “‘The’ item” — was recovered near the world’s only combat operational atom bomb base (Roswell AAF) in 1947.

The hull design, aerodynamic measurements and propulsion info was passed directly to Jack Northrop and Kelly Johnson, beginning in 1950, with a major block of data being passed on from Wright Patterson AFB’s Foreign Technologies Division in 1952. “‘The’ item” refers to the top secret designation of Kelly’s original variant of the U-2 (TR-1) spy plane in Congressional and Pentagon budgets in the 1950s.

Nearly all “Biomorphic” aerospace designs were inspired by the Roswell spacecraft, from Kelly’s SR-71 Blackbird onward to today’s drones, UCAVs, and aerospace craft. The inward canted vertical stabilizers of the F-19, the Have Blue, many drones, some UCAVs, and the SR-71 matched the 30 degree inward cant of the Roswell spacecraft’s shark fin-shaped pair of vertical stabilizers or “Winglets.” The same goes for the wing camber to fuselage “Blend” of the airframe designs. The outward cants of the F-22 Raptor, the F-117, the McDonnell Douglas YF- 23, and the stealth concept prototypes perform similar aerodynamic functions for stability in high performance flight.

The Roswell ship was a winged metallic crystalline multilayered aerospace craft that could slam its way through the atmosphere riding its own shock wave just as the top secret aerospace “Wave riders” from Skunk works are able to do. Ben Rich claimed publicly before his death, “We now have the technology to take ET home”.

The Sky People from these super-civilizations could initiate a series of open, public, dramatically-obvious demonstrations-of-presence such that the Government will then be compelled to publicly acknowledge alien visitors as a reality. During last summer 2000 UFO reports were recorded each month indicating a more brazen attitude by the visitors. A landing or low pass at a stadium with a popular athletic event covered with national television coverage would likely convince millions of the reality of UFOs and alien visitors.

The Sky People

Dr. Ardy Sixkiller Clarke, a Professor Emeritus at Montana State University, has dedicated her life and career to working with indigenous populations. She is the author of Encounters with Star People, and has a new book titled, Sky People: Untold Stories of Alien Encounters in Mesoamerica.

Dr. Clarke collected stories of encounters, sky gods, giants, little people, and aliens among the indigenous people.

Many indigenous peoples told Dr. Clarke stories of beings from the stars but few pseudo-scientists have given credence to their stories. Science assumed superiority of thought over the collective memory of humanity.

The Enlightenment’s insistence on an objective, sterile, and amoral investigation marshaled in a new era that valued supposed rationality. The authority of truth that was once regulated to truth was regulated to myth and legend. Even stories told universally in tribal cultures across the world were ignored and not recognized as legitimate. Now it turns out that almost all the world’s history that is based on carbon dating turns out to be highly inaccurate. The earth is likely much younger that science tells us.

Pakal the Great, 8 Ahau and Sun Shield (March 603 – August 683), was ruler of the Maya city-state of Palenque in the Late Classic period of Mesoamerican chronology. He acceded to the throne in July 615 and ruled until his death. During a reign of 68 years—the fifth longest of any sovereign monarch in history, the longest in world history for more than a millennium,^[and still the second longest in the history of the Americas—Pakal was responsible for the construction or extension of some of Palenque’s most notable surviving inscriptions and monumental architecture. This is a unique piece of Classic Mayan Art Ichnographically, around the edges of the lid is a band with cosmological signs, including those for sun, moon, and star, as well as the heads of six named noblemen. UFOs are frequently seen in the area and seems to be of interest to the alien visitors.

The central image is that of a cruciform huge world tree that in many religions holds up the heavens. Beneath Pakal is one of the heads of a celestial two-headed serpent viewed frontally. Both the king and the serpent head on which he seems to rest are framed by the open jaws of a funerary serpent, a common iconographic device for signaling entrance into, or residence in, the realm(s) of the dead. The king himself wears the attributes of the Tonsured maize god – in particular a turtle ornament on the breast – and is shown in a peculiar posture that may denote rebirth. Interpretation of the lid has raised controversy. Linda Schele saw Pakal falling down the Milky Way into the southern horizon.^[

Erich Von Däniken reproduced a drawing of the sarcophagus lid and comparing Pakal’s pose to that of Project Mercury astronauts in the 1960s. Von Däniken interprets drawings underneath him as rockets, and offers it as possible evidence of a influence on the ancient Maya.

Dr Clarke visits a Maya elder who claims the Mayans had a star map of the universe with the planets of other civilizations. The Mayans were brought here from a home planet that has a jungle climate and mountains like Guatemala. Even today their prayers and chants allow them to speak to the Sky People.

The stories were told by people from all walks of life. Some had graduate degrees; others had never attended school. Some were adept at technology; others had never used a cell phone, owned a computer or a television set. A few of the stories were about events that occurred before the 1947 Roswell incident, however, the majority of the events took place between 1990 and 2010. This book contributes to the knowledge about UFOs from a group that until now have mostly remained silent. For readers, it is likely they will never look at the UFO/Alien phenomenon in the same way again.

”’ Apollo 11 Moon flight spots Alien UFOs

Alleged Unidentified Spotted by Apollo Crew

There are several interesting stories that have surfaced about UFOs and the Moon Flights. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin apparently feels it was not a UFO they saw on the way to the moon and the Science Channel gave or more exciting version than what really happened. It is true that the Apollo 11 crew spotted an unidentified object moving with the spacecraft as they approached the Moon. They contacted mission control to confirm this mystery object was not Apollo 11’s large rocket upper stage, which was about 6,000 miles away.

Ejected panels could continue moving relatively close to the Apollo spacecraft. Aldrin now feels his remarks were taken out of context to imply they had seen a UFO and likely he was warned NASA to explain his sighting has something mundane.

The Science Channel, nor the astronauts can only speculate on what was being witnessed. The TV program suggests. ‘without explicitly lying’ that Aldrin and his crewmates saw an alien spacecraft.

New data indicates the unmanned Soviet Luna 15 spacecraft was trying was trying to collect samples of lunar soil and rock and then return to Earth before the US mission. Newly released recordings from Jodrell’s Lovell radio telescope, which were hidden in archives until researchers found them, show the Russian craft orbited the Moon and crash-landed onto its surface at 15:50 on July 21, 1969.

In 1979 Maurice Chatelain former chief of NASA Communications Systems confirmed that Astronaut Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had indeed reported seeing UFOs on the rim of a crater. Chatelain believes that some UFOs may come from our own solar system – specifically Titan.

Chatelain further claims “all Apollo and Gemini flights were followed, both at a distance and sometimes also quite closely, by space vehicles of extraterrestrial origin – flying saucers, or UFOs, if you want to call them by that name. Every time it occurred, the astronauts informed Mission Control, who then ordered absolute silence.”

“Walter Schirra aboard Mercury 8 was the first astronaut to use the code name ‘Santa Claus’ to indicate the presence of flying saucers next to space capsules. However, his announcements were barely noticed by the public.

It was a little different when James Lovell on board the Apollo 8 command module came out from behind the moon and said for everybody to hear: ‘PLEASE BE INFORMED THAT THERE IS A SANTA CLAUS.’ Even though this happened on Christmas Day 1968, many people sensed a hidden meaning in those words.” The rumors persist.

NASA may well be a civilian agency, but many of its programs are funded by the defense budget and most of the astronauts are subject to military security regulations and sign oaths not to reveal information on UFOs and alien life. Apart from the fact that the National Security Agency screens all films and probably radio communications as well. We have the statements by Otto Binder, Dr. Garry Henderson, and Maurice Chatelain that the astronauts were under strict orders not to discuss their sightings.

And Gordon Cooper has testified to a United Nations committee that one of the astronauts witnessed a UFO on the ground. If there is no secrecy, why has this sighting not been made public?

Lockheed Skunkworks engineer Don Phillips while we were at the Disclosure Project told us, “During the Apollo landing, Neil Armstrong says, “They’re here. They are right over there and look at the size of those ships. And, it is obvious they don’t like us being here”. When I was working with the Skunkworks with Kelly Johnson, we signed an agreement with the government to keep very quiet about this. “The encounter was common knowledge in NASA,” he revealed.

Nearly four decades after astronaut Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, the U.S. is about to return at a cost of $579-million to find the best site for Earth’s first off-world colony. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is expected to produce detailed topographic maps of the moon, and glimpse inside craters at the poles where scientists hope to find frozen water. NASA is planning to crash into the moon on October 9, 2009, with the spent second stage of the rocket as a to create and a 6-mile-high plume and a crater 66 feet wide by 13 feet deep to search for water. Assuming ET is on the moon, this may trigger a conflict with superior forces.

Also, Air Force Sgt. Karl Wolfe was told while at Langley Air Force Base enhanced imagery had clearly shown structures on the far side of the Moon. These structures were not created by natural forces-they were made by intelligent beings who were apparently conducting mining operations.

To help solve this problem of what is the truth the US Navy on January 25, 1994, the Deep Space Program Science Experiment (DSPSE) (better known as Clementine) was launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, on a mission designed to test lightweight miniature sensors and advanced spacecraft components by exposing them, over a long period of time, to the difficult environment of outer space. In addition to testing the various sensors, Clementine was given the complex task of mapping the moon. The mission results were spectacular.

It is interesting to note Astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin rejects global warming fears: ‘Climate has been changing for billions of years’ A record cool summer has descended upon many parts of the U.S. after predictions of the year without a summer.”

However, it was Dr Steven Greer, founder of The Disclosure Project and The Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI), who added fuel to the alien theory fire, as he claimed to have had secret discussions with close acquaintances with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Dr Greer claimed in a blog post that people close to the first Moon Landers admitted that the duo did see evidence of aliens while on the historic missions.

Dr Greer wrote: “Close friends and very close family members of both Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin have separately told me that indeed there were numerous, large UFOs around the crater where the Lunar Module landed and that these were seen by both Armstrong and Aldrin.

“I have also spoken to military officers that have seen the footage of this event- but it has never been made public.”

However, Buzz Aldrin has directly addressed claims he saw UFOs saying he saw lights, but did not think they were of alien origin.

Dr Aldrin said in a 2014 Q&A: “On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us.

“There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world – it was the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the Lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft.

Commander Graham Bethune is a retired Navy Pilot and a good friend. During his 26 years of active duty he qualified in over 100 different models of aircraft. In February 5, 1951, he and two other Navy Pilots were sent to Keflavik, Iceland on a Secret mission to meet with the Icelandic Government and Lockheed Overseas, who managed the Airport.

On February 10, 1951, while Piloting a four engine Navy R5D Transport returning from Keflavik, to Argentia, Newfoundland, he had an eight minute encounter with an “Unidentified Flying Object” that was 300 feet in diameter. The first chapter of Major Keyhoe’s book “Flying Saucers Top Secret” is devoted to this famous encounter.

During the Disclosure Project, Commander Bethune revealed his Flight 124 from Keflavik, Iceland was involved with a near miss of a UFO in 1951, about 300 miles outside of Argentia, Newfoundland, over the Atlantic Ocean flying a R5D aircraft. Here is Graham’s account of his sighting.

“My name is Graham Bethune. I am a commander, retired pilot from the Navy and I went through the regular Navy program of training pilots. I graduated in 1943 from Pensacola Academy Air. All Navy pilots are trained navigators.

He and his crew and passengers had an important sighting over the North Atlantic Ocean.

When we landed at Argentia, an Air Force officer interrogated us and showed us photos of UFOs asking me to choose the type we had seen. He made a good report, which went to the headquarters of the Air Force in Washington, D.C. He was transferred to fly the top military VIP unit.

Commander Bethune flew Naval Transports for 12 years, and was a “VIP Transport Plane Commander,” and held a “Top Secret” clearance. He was a test pilot and served six years with the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics.

Commander Bethune mentioned he flew high ranking officers to Utah where a 100 foot’ in diameter and slightly oval craft had crashed. There were US Air Force, Army and Navy officers in attendance as well as scientists and academics from various stateside universities. Both discs were retrieved and brought back to Wright Patterson.

He accumulated over 10,000 Navy and civilian flying hours. He flew the Secretary of the Navy, Secretary of the Army, Chief of Naval Operations, Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Supreme Allied Commander, and the NATO Commander Admiral McCormick, and numerous admirals. If a UFO crashed or an important meeting concerning UFOs occurred he would be chosen to pilot the VIPs to their destination because of his sighting.

Col. Donald Ware shared, “Graham personally told me that he flew General George Marshall and high ranking Naval personal and scientists to two crash retrievals – one in Iceland and one in Utah.

Graham was informed by Admiral Forney himself and Graham never doubted that a ploy was set-up to divert attention away from the Navy. Graham also claimed we had a base on the moon and we had a Navy space shuttle fleet. He felt truth is often stranger than science fiction that ET movies are supported by the government to create acceptance.

Graham confide in Donald M. Ware, Lt Colonel USAF (Ret), who was for ten years Florida State MUFON Director and former Eastern Regional Director before me— then 18 years as a Director of the International UFO Congress. They discussed Alien-Human Hybrids, underground bases, and the levels of consciousness to contact alien spirits.

Lt. Colonel Donald Ware mentions that Commander Bethune had informed Ware that he had flown Admiral Byrd to Antarctica in 1945 in a secret mission to a German Base On this flight were US Navy high ranking personnel, British Naval officers/scientists, and some US scientists.

Prior to World War II the Germans had disc technology provided by Off Planet Visitors. The Germans weaponized the discs by putting machine guns and cannons on the craft. ‘

However, the Visitors interceded stating – that this technology violated a prime directive – that it could not be used for purposes of warfare. The Visitors told the Germans that they could use this technology but not for World War II and were given the option of moving the discs to a base in Antarctica, which is what they did with Hitler’s approval.

Admiral Byrd had explored over much of the North and South Poles and was awarded the Medal of Honor. When Admiral Byrd reached Antarctica he attempted to negotiate with the German scientists to participate in a cooperative sharing their advanced technologies! The meetings went very badly and the Germans absolutely refused to share any technology with the US and British governments.

Graham told Colonel Ware that Admiral Byrd needed to get this awful turn of events back to the Pentagon – to report directly to those who tasked Byrd with this mission. Graham flew Byrd back to the Pentagon, wherein he told of the non-cooperation by the Germans. The resulting failure of that initial meeting with the Germans in Antarctica set into motion the gears for a naval military action to force the Germans to share the technology after, the World War II was over in Operation Highjump. .

Rand Paul on Tuesday stepped up his months-long fight with the nation’s top infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, suggesting he lied to Congress about whether the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research of almost a million dollars at the Communist Chinese Wuhan Institute of Virology, and triggering an angry shouting match.

At a Senate Health Committee hearing meant to update lawmakers on the country’s COVID-19 response, the Kentucky Republican began by asking Fauci, if he’s aware that it’s a crime to lie to Congress.

“On May 11, you stated that NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan, China Institute of Virology,” Paul said. He claimed that gain-of-function research — which could, in theory, enhance the transmissibility of a virus — was engineered in the lab and referred to an academic paper by a Chinese scientist, which he then asked to be entered into the record and for a copy to be given to Fauci.

“Dr. Fauci, knowing that it is a crime to lie to Congress, do you wish to retract your statement of May 11, where you claimed at the NIH never funded gain-of-function research and move on?” Paul said, Tthe deaths of four million people are tied to the Wufan lab and spreading the disease with millions of Chinese travelers flying at low flight cost around the world while forbidding travel in China .

Some of the most spectacular and believable UFO accounts come from pilots of all types. These are those witnesses who are experienced with the skies above our heads and who tend to know what they are looking at, so when they report UFO phenomena, people tend to pay attention. There have been numerous pilot UFO encounters reported across the decades, and here we will look at a selection of accounts from the 1990s.

Our first case here takes us back to January 28, 1994, when Air-France flight AF-3532 had a rather bizarre encounter on its way from Nice, France, to London, England, along with the pilot and commander of the flight, Jean-Charles Duboc, copilot Valerie Chauffour, and 24 passengers on board. At the time the flight was in excellent weather conditions, with high visibility and clear skies, and the flight had gone smoothly until they reached an area somewhere above Coulommiers, France, where they saw something out the window that they at first took to be a weather balloon or another aircraft, but soon proved to be anything but. Duboc would later say of what they saw:

I first identified it like an aircraft facing us, at approximately 45 km (25 Nm), at an altitude of approximately 10500 meters (25 Nm) and at an angle close to 45°. I found this slope absolutely abnormal because aircraft are not inclined at this altitude beyond 30 degrees without risking to fall down. This object seemed to us then absolutely abnormal by its size which seemed immense, its dark red color and of the fuzzy edges. I had the impression to observe a gigantic lens in evolution. It did not resemble anything we had seen in our flying careers. This object, this phenomenon, remained motionless while we left it on our left side, still at an approximate distance of 45 km. We observed it during a good minute, conscious that we were seeing something utterly anomalous. We continued to observe it when it gradually merged with the environment. We saw it becoming translucent, transparent, diluted in space. That was absolutely amazing.

At the time they did not have radar operational because the radar was typically only used to locate storms, but they nevertheless contacted ground control at Rheims to report what they had seen and that was that. Duboc would not file any written report at the time for fear of tarnishing his reputation, but would later change his mind. He would say of this:

In the immediate, the continuations were non-existent, because I did not submit a written report to avoid being ridiculed. It was three years later, as I read an article from Paris Match, which described how a UFO has been detected above Paris, that I made the connection between this UFO and that what I had seen. I then submitted a report to the Gendarmerie Nationale (French police, having an SOP for collection of UFO reports). I barely speak about this encounter, and I had the surprise to note that about one out of ten pilot had observed a unidentified flying phenomenon

After discussing about the observation, we concluded that the object was approximately 300 meters in diameter. I took note of the radar recordings by the CODED (Operational Center of Air Defense). There is a very curious characteristic for the trajectory of the UFO, as it shows that it would have almost collided with us. The minimal distance on the recording is less than 1 Nm, that is to say 10 seconds of flight. This kind of observation is traditional in electronic war. The modern military aircraft are furtive, and at the same time able to synthesize a virtual image of themselves by delaying the radar echo. If a missile had been drawn on this UFO, which was above Paris, it would be our A320 which would probably have been hit by the missile. I think that it is not desirable to shoot fire at this kind of phenomenon.

The following year we have the strange case of a commercial Boeing 737 that was flying towards Manchester Airport, in England on January 6, when a series of very odd and at times harrowing events played out. On the plane’s final approach, the pilot and co-pilot saw a bright light careening towards them at great speed, and before they even could react the object shot by the plane in very close proximity, such that they instinctively ducked and braced for impact. As it passed, they could see that it was “wedge-shaped with what could have been a black stripe down the side” and that it had “a number of small white lights, rather like a Christmas tree.” They also were perplexed that there was no sound at all from the craft, and even more oddly no turbulence caused by its passing. Also strange was that ground control at the airport could find no radar signature of the alleged object. A transcript of the pilot’s conversation with ground control reads:

B737 (1848) – ‘c/s we just had something go down the RHS just above us very fast.’

Manchester – ‘Well, there’s nothing seen on radar. Was it er an ac?

B737 – ‘Well, it had lights, it went down the starboard side very quick.’

Manchester – ‘And above you?’

B737 – ‘er, just slightly above us, yeah.

Manchester – ‘Keep an eye out for something, er, I can’t see anything at all at the moment so, er, must have, er, been very fast or gone down very quickly after it passed you I think.’

B737 – ‘OK. Well, there you go!’

At the time there was no known air traffic in the vicinity, and the lack of radar contact caused speculation that it had been a hang glider, paraglider or microlight, but a later investigation by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) would deem these possibilities to be very unlikely. The idea that there had been some sort of military test going on was also dismissed because it was deemed highly unlikely such a thing would have been conducted so close to an international airport, and furthermore the RAF denied having anything to so with it. There was also a lack of any radar contact, which should have happened with a military craft. Oddly, there were no reported sightings from any one on the ground, making the investigation more difficult to get to the bottom of. In the end, the CAA would conclude:

Usually, activity of this kind is accompanied by a rash of ground sightings in the same geographic area; in this case, as far as is known, there were no other reports and therefore the incident has to be viewed in isolation, with no other witnesses. The resources normally available when investigating airmisses are pilots’ reports, corroborated by radar and RT recordings. Often these will provide all the clues necessary, but in this case there is no ‘reported pilot’, and radar recordings do not show any unknown contacts. The lack of a radar contact is not necessarily unusual if weather suppressors are in use on radar, particularly if the object generates a poor radar response.

In these conditions the radar an interpret a non-transponding (primary) contact as weather, and therefore disregards it. Enquiries into military activity did not reveal any ac in the area at the time, and it was considered inconceivable that such activity would take place so close to a busy airport without some sort of prior notification. members put forward other suggestions, such as large model aircraft or commercially operated remotely controlled craft, such as those which are used for survey or photographic work. Considering the prevailing conditions – darkness, high ground, strong NW wind and the proximity of a major international airport – the Group felt that this kind of activity, together with the hang glider/microlight theory, could not be regarded as a realistic possibility.

That same year there was a report from an America West B-757 passenger airliner flying over the panhandle of Texas, in the United States near Bovina, Texas, when First Officer John J. Waller and a flight attendant noticed a “row of white lights” that were flashing in a left to right pattern. These lights were somewhere below their position, but when ground control was notified, there could be found no radar target in the area, although one of the controllers contacted the North American Air Defense Command (NORAD), and was told that they were tracking an unidentified object. In the meantime, the pilot and co-pilot could now see that the object was cigar-shaped and massive, an estimated 300 to 400 feet long. The whole of it then moved out of sight. When NORAD was contacted again about what they had picked up, they claimed that the thing had made several very fast accelerations and decelerations at speeds of between 1,000 and 1,400 mph. UFO researcher Walter N. Webb would take great interest in the case and not only procure transcripts of the pilot’s conversation with ground control, but also file several Freedom of Information Act requests and search military records, but nothing could be found that could account for what had been seen. Also in 1995 is a report from Long Island, New York, where on November 18 of that year airliner Lufthansa 405, an Airbus A-340, was on its way overseas to Germany. At some point the pilot called Boston Air Traffic Control to report a “long, cylindrical object with a white flashing light on its front, and a long, green, comet-like tail,” which was also seen by British Airways Flight 226 on a flight from London. The large mysterious object apparently sped by both airliners, but ground control could find no scheduled air traffic in the region to account for it. Part of the transcript between the Lufthansa flight (LUFT) ground control (FAA) and the British Airways flight (BRIT) reads as follows:

LUFT: Uh, Boston, Lufthansa 405/Heavy.

FAA: Lufthansa 405, go ahead.

LUFT: Uh, we just passed traffic on the left wing, uh, about 2,000 to 3,000 feet above us. What traffic was it?

FAA Is this Lufthansa 405?

LUFT: Affirmative, Lufthansa 405. We had opposite traffic on the left wing. Can you confirm this?

FAA: Lufthansa 405, negative. I show no traffic in your area within, uh, 20 or 30 miles.

LUFT: It should be now on our tail, about 10 miles… We passed it just one minute ago, and it was looking strange.

BRIT: Speed Bird 226 confirms that. It was just above us on our left-hand side about 3 minutes ago.

FAA What altitude does it appear to be at, Lufthansa 405?

LUFT: It was only 2 or 3 thousand feet above us. We are now passing (Flight) Level 260. That’s confirmed, or not? Lufthansa.

FAA: Lufthansa 405, roger.

BRIT: Speed Bird 226, we confirm that. We had something go past us about two, well…about one to two thousand feet above on the left hand side. Uh, looked like a green trail on it, and a very bright light on the front of it. We assumed it was an opposite traffic.

FAA: Speed Bird 226, roger that.

LUFT: ((Garbled))..Lufthansa 405/Heavy. we are right now about 26 miles east of “Hotel Tango Oscar ((Hampton??)).” And the Speed Bird is now ahead, or behind us ((or where)?

FAA: Lufthansa 405, the Speed Bird is in your 12:00 o’clock, and about 30 miles, 40 miles.

LUFT: That was not our traffic. Lufthansa 405 Heavy.

FAA: Lufthansa 405, roger. And the heading of the traffic, was it the same direction, or opposite direction?

LUFT: Exactly opposite. Lufthansa 405/Heavy.

FAA: Roger. Did it pass off your right side?

LUFT: Uh, left side.

FAA: Roger.

BRIT: Yea, Speed Bird 226 confirms that. We saw the same thing. It certainly looked like an aircraft initially, but it may not have been one.

LUFT: ((We can’t tell then??)) It was looking very strange, with a long, uh, light, in the tail.

BRIT: Yea, a big bright white light on the front, and a greenish tail coming out the back.
FAA: Speed Bird 226, did it go over…did it go overhead. The traffic go overhead you, or was it below you?

BRIT: It was overhead and off to the left, much the same as ((garbled)). It actually looked about…opposite traffic, 2000 feet above. That’s what it initially looked like. But then it did have a very strong trail to it…a vapor trail, which looked more like smoke. And the light on the front was very, very bright, and as it went past us, it seemed to ((just?)) disappear and ((went)) 5 miles behind us.

LUFT: Can you confirm this, Lufthansa 405/Heavy.

FAA: OK, Lufthansa 405, Speed Bird 226. Thanks, we’ll look into it.

LUFT: It was pretty close, and like Speed Bird said, it looked like ((four??)) or three thousand feet above on the left wing, just one mile and, uh, on opposite track… It doesn’t have, …it didn’t have any uh, lights…((normal)) lights, beacon lights, or red or green lights. Only a white light in the front, and with a long green light. It looked like a U-F-O.

FAA: Lufthansa 405, roger that. Like I said, we had nothing flying in the area. You are just north of a military operating area, but the traffic shouldn’t have varied out that far out,…out of the area.

LUFT: Must have been a military. Lufthansa 405/Heavy.

FAA: Roger. Giant Killer, ((garbled)) 59.

GK: Giant Killer.

FAA: Hey, you got anything flying out in the area?

GK: Negative, ((105 is??)) turned over. 0300.

FAA: Well, I just received a couple of UFO reports.

GK: Oh, is that right?

FAA? Yea, I had a couple of guys that reported lights, just moved all over their heads. I have no traffic whatsoever in the area. They said it passed within a mile of them, like at 2-3 thousand feet above them, opposite direction. ((Garbled)) green trail out the back.

What was going on here? Who knows? Our next case comes from the following year, when on February 28, 1996, the crew of Air Shuttle flight 5959 reported something bizarre while flying near Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. It was reported that the crew witnessed a bright light below them, which soon began flashing with multi-colored lights a few thousand feet below their plane. The strange lights were also seen by another aircraft, a Mesaba Airlines flight 3179, but Cleveland Air Traffic Control were unable to pick the object up on radar. Flight 5959 decided to descend to get a closer look at what they were seeing, and the pilot reported that it was spinning and pulsating, with “a rotating light around it like a Frisbee type thing that’s going around it,” and in the meantime Mesaba 3179 flashed its lights at the UFO in an effort to communicate to no effect. Apparently, some passengers took photographs of the UFO, but happened to these remains as mysterious as the identity of the object.

The following year there would be another case involving what are called “near-misses,” when a UFO passes within dangerously close distance of an aircraft. The report comes from August 9, 1997, when a Swissair Boeing 747 was on a short flight from Philadelphia International Airport to Boston Logan International Airport. At approximately 5:07 p.m., both the pilot, Capt. Phil Bobet, and his co-pilot saw an unidentified bright light go speeding past them the opposite direction at close proximity, “like a rocket” and too fast to be another plane. The object apparently came out of nowhere and disappeared just as fast. There has never been any explanation.

On February 3, 1999, there is the spectacular case of several pilots off the Danish coast above the North Sea reporting having been buzzed by a massive cylindrical UFO “as big as a battleship.” One of the pilot reports in particular stands out, that of the pilot of a Debonair BAe146 aircraft who claimed that the object had approached extremely close and lit up the plane with an “incandescent light.” A spokesperson with the CAA would say of the incident:

The captain reported seeing an unnatural bright light below his aircraft while flying at 28,000 ft. The area below him was illuminated for about 10 seconds by incandescent light and it was certainly not a light from another plane. Three other aircraft saw it moving at a high speed or static. However, air traffic control were informed and they confirmed that there were no other planes in the vicinity. Then, five minutes later, there was a brief radar return from a spot 75 miles away. We believe there was no danger involved.

The case would later sort of be brushed off and the military would not comment, despite the fact that it was reported that a military radar station in Yorkshire had tracked it after it had entered UK air space. This case, like all the others mentioned here, has gone on to be unexplained, and we are left to wonder what we are dealing with. What is zipping about up in out airspace menacing these aircraft? Is there some rational explanation, or is there something more mysterious at work? It remains to be seen.
