A Lost Primeval World Has Been Found in a Giant South China Sinkhole!
Chinese explorers have discovered a lost world in an exceptionally deep and large sinkhole in south China. And in this ancient subterranean space they expect to find flora and fauna unknown to science.
A cenote is a natural pit, or sinkhole, caused by bedrock collapsing in karst terrain that exposes groundwater channels. When we read the word cenote it's normally followed up with a story about Aztec or Maya bodies and artifacts. This is because Mexico and Central America virtually float on underground rivers with thousands of cenotes peppering the landscape. However, this sinkhole story is from China, where an enormous karst sinkhole has recently been discovered containing its own untouched primeval ecosystem.

Karst terrain describes a landscape where the surface can be dissolved by groundwater circulating through soluble salt beds and carbonate rocks like gypsum and limestone. In China, cenotes are called tiankeng (heavenly pit), and a lost world has been found in a hitherto unknown sink hole near Ping'e village in the county of Leye, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Central China, according to LiveScience.
The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region borders Vietnam and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site . The area is known for its stalactites and stalagmite riddled caves, charging rivers, and towering tooth-like karst formations, and countless sinkholes. According to the Xinhua news agency the latest south China sinkhole is 630 feet (192 meters) deep and the interior measures 1,004 feet (306 meters) long and 492 feet (150 meters) wide. This is about half the depth of the deepest water-filled sinkhole on the planet, the El Zacatón sinkhole in northeast Mexico , which is 335 meters (1099 feet) deep.
Exploring Worlds Lost In Time
According to Newsweek this is the 30th sinkhole discovered in this area of China. George Veni, the US executive director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI), told Live Science the discovery “is no surprise.” Southern China is “karst topography,” said the cave specialist, and he added that the entire region is a “landscape prone to dramatic sinkholes and otherworldly caves.”
Veni explained that rainwater is slightly acidic and that it picks up carbon dioxide as it runs through the soil, becoming even more acidic. It permeates cracks in the bedrock and wears away tunnels which over time create chambers. When these spaces get big enough they collapse and create sinkholes, like the one recently discovered in China. However, where most of the Mexican sinkholes are full of water, the Chinese speleologists and spelunkers discovered ancient trees measuring 131 feet (40 meters) tall in the latest China sinkhole.

Expedition leader, Chen Lixin, told Xinhua that the dense undergrowth on the sinkhole floor was as high as a person's shoulders. And so bizarre was this lost space that Lixin added that he wouldn't be surprised to learn “there are species found in these caves that have never been reported or described by science.” Zhang Yuanhai, a senior engineer with the Institute of Karst Geology, said the bottom of the sinkhole “seemed like another world.”
Botanists around the world will be waiting with bated breath for news of new tree species, and any such discoveries will perhaps shift focus from China's current íssues with trees. The Gobi Desert and other arid regions in China are expanding because of overgrazing that has depleted border vegetation allowing wind and gravity to erode soils. In response, China has planted 66 billion trees in the past four decades as part of its fight against expanding deserts. Covering an area the size of Ireland every year, these new trees have successfully slowed down China′s deserts.
Notwithstanding, Troy Sternberg, a geographer at the University of Oxford, UK, says “it’s kind of foolish to plant trees in a desert” and that this will worsen water scarcity . A 2019 Nature article explains that most of the billions of trees planted in China “are not native to the regions where they have been planted and they use a lot of water.” This in effect compounds the negative effects of global warming by reducing the available water for human consumption.

70-YEAR-OLD ASTRONOMY PHOTOS MAY BE CLUES TO ALIEN VISITORS — STUDY

ON A SERIES of 70-year-old photographic plates containing images of the night sky, a few astronomers say they’ve found something weird: flashes of light that appear and then disappear, like ghosts.
“We found one image where nine stars were out there, and they vanished. And they are not there half an hour earlier, and they are not there six days later,” says Beatriz Villarroel, a postdoctoral researcher at the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics. “And you wonder, ‘Is this real?’”
There isn’t any readily available astronomical explanation for what these vanishing points of light, which the researchers call transients, might be. The dots might be defects in the photographic emulsions or image artifacts from when astronomers first scanned the plates. But in a series of recent papers, Villarroel and a small team of astronomers have been more seriously probing the possibility that the flashes might be something more exciting — extraterrestrial objects.
A shiny, spinning object passing by Earth would leave a line of dots in a long-exposure image of the night sky. Asteroids or meteors aren’t likely to look like that — most asteroids are dark, and meteors are moving so fast they’d look like streaks. And, most intriguingly for the researchers, there weren’t any satellites in the night sky when the images were taken, as all the plates were before the launch of Sputnik.
Still, Villarroel and colleagues haven’t ruled out Earthly explanations for these tantalizing dots. And there’s a long history of events associated with the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) fizzling out under closer scrutiny.
WHAT THEY FOUND — The disappearing dots that got Villarroel so excited first showed up as part of a search for more mundane astronomical phenomena. There are a number of things in the universe that will shine brightly for a short period and disappear again, like supernovae, actively feeding black holes, flaring stars, and more. But searching for these transient objects is nearly impossible today because of the thousands of satellites and millions of pieces of space debris in orbit around Earth, many of which appear as momentary flashes of light in photos of the night sky.
“The whole sky is filled with multiple transients today from all the space debris,” Villarroel says.
So she and other astronomers turned to photos of the night sky taken before the satellite era. Beginning in the late 19th century, astronomers have undertaken surveys of the night sky, using telescopes and photographic plates to take images of large swaths of the cosmos as seen from Earth. Villarroel used a series of plates from the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey, which ran from 1949 to 1958 and covered much of the sky as seen from the northern hemisphere, on the hunt for transients.

Her research is part of the Vanishing and Appearing Sources during a Century of Observations (VASCO) project, which, along with an associated citizen science project, is searching for transient light sources in the night sky. But after looking at the plates carefully, Villarroel and her colleagues noticed something odd: Nine dots of light, all in a line, appeared in just one plate from April 12, 1950. It didn’t look anything like the supernovas and quasars they’d normally find, which appear just as single points.
In a paper published in Scientific Reports in 2021, the scientists take a closer look at the nine transients to see if they could find a more ordinary explanation for them. They ruled out astrophysical explanations, passing airplanes, asteroids, and other known light sources. The dots could have come from contamination caused by nuclear fallout, they say — it was the era of nuclear experimentation, after all. But no known tests happened in 1950. Villarroel and her colleagues hint that that leaves the door open to other explanations. Like, say, extraterrestrial spacecraft.

WANTING TO BELIEVE — In two subsequent papers, the researchers take that idea more seriously. In a paper in Acta Astronautica published in 2022, they explore ways to find similar instances of transients in other images, laying the groundwork for future research. And in a paper published in 2022 to the pre-print server the arXiv (meaning it hasn’t been peer-reviewed yet), the researchers detail other instances of transient flashes of light that seem to line up.
Villarroel isn’t saying it’s aliens, of course. “We are very careful when we write our papers, because we are not sure if they are real or not,” she says. “We need to always assume that it is the most boring explanation.”
There are some good reasons to suspect the explanation is indeed more boring, says Paul Horowitz, an emeritus professor of physics and electrical engineering at Harvard and a member of the ET-hunting PANOSETI project, who was not involved in the study.
He used the Palomar plates earlier in his career, he says, and the presence of odd flashes of light doesn’t surprise him.
“There would be these things that we’d call Kodak stars, which were basically blemishes in the emulsion,” Horowitz says. “Film is full of that kind of stuff. If you look at enough of these, and there’s a lot of them, you’re going to find artifacts.”
He also points out that the object, if there was one, needn’t be in geosynchronous orbit, as Villarroel and her coauthors suggest. Depending on how often it flashes and how long the flashes are, an object could appear as a series of dots in a long exposure at a range of distances, from within Earth’s atmosphere to far beyond our planet. That could mean whatever’s on the plates could also be something launched from Earth.

An earthly object might be the best explanation for the flashing lights, Eliot Gillum, the director of optical SETI at the SETI Institute, tells Inverse. While there weren’t any satellites in 1950, the U.S. government had begun testing rockets several years earlier, relying on expertise from ex-Nazi scientists brought to the U.S. after the Second World War. There are several military bases near the Palomar Observatory, Gillum points out, any of which could have been launching rockets by 1950. He says the glints could come from a maneuver known as a roll program or from debris that broke off after launch.
There’s also ample precedent for seemingly wild observations turning out to be far more prosaic. In 1962, two French astronomers were stunned to discover that the stars they were observing were giving off massive flares of potassium, something astronomers had never seen a star do before. But on closer inspection, the “potassium flare stars” were just match heads, which had potassium in them, being lit by astronomers taking a smoke break at the observatory. And more recently, scientists studying Fast Radio Bursts were excited by what appeared to be strange new signals coming from near Earth — only to discover later they were from a microwave warming up the astronomers’ lunches.
Even if the mysterious flashes of light aren’t extraterrestrials, that doesn’t mean we haven’t learned anything, Gillum says. “One of the things that I think is truly great about SETI is that it says, ‘OK, I think I understand all of the science of the things out there, [so] what is on the edge, what is outside of what I understand?’” he says.
Exploring the edges of science could bring new insights — or, sometimes, simple explanations like dust grains that landed on photographic plates seventy years ago. But Villarroel says that if their research rules out an actual object, it suggests an upper limit on the number of extraterrestrial objects that could be near Earth. At one-billionth for every square kilometer of space, the number is tiny — not a great sign for people hoping to find extraterrestrials visiting our solar system.
Villarroel says she hopes to be able to study the Palomar plates themselves — her team had been using scanned images of them — to study the images with a microscope for a better look at the transients. And she’d like to look at images from other sky surveys to see if similar transients appear. It may be that there was indeed something out there on April 12, 1950. But what it was is still a mystery.

Leonardo Ortiz, projectleider van de zoektocht naar het fossiel, zei dat de nooit eerder vertoonde kenmerken van het fossiel een nieuwe geslachts- en soortnaam vereisten. He claims that the U.S. military used technologies they traded with the aliens – but did not tell the public as they felt they were not ‘emotionally ready’ for the encounter.
‘In 1964, when I was a weather observer at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, I witnessed interactions between the military and a group of mysterious tall, white, human-like extra-terrestrials,’ he said. ‘Their craft are capable of traveling faster than the speed of light because Einstein was wrong about relativity.’
Hall worked at a former military site near Las Vegas, where he claimed that many of the personnel had met and dealt with Tall Whites – but which has since been disused.

This is a very exciting white orb moving across the sky in Alabama this week. The object is semi-transparent and seems to be hovering over the area, however fast moving clouds soon hide it. Admiral Byrd’s version and the secret truth of Operation HighJump are told here. A maneuver that concluded in a full-fledged fight with aliens from the Arctic Shelf.
Admiral Richard Byrd, the iconic pilot, headed the project, which was formally designated the United States Navy Antarctic Development Program, that happened between year 1946 and 1947.
Admiral Byrd was famed for going to the North and South Poles and obtaining the Congressional Medal of Honor.
In his writings, which were published at a Nat Geo Convention honoring Byrd, we learn that he was discovered beaten with his teeth pulled out in a warehouse.
Researchers recovered Byrd’s first map of Hollow Earth, which he drew in his notebook during Operation HighJump. This journal, which had been lost for years, contained a detailed description of their Antarctic adventures.
That Journal even claimed to have seen a ship that we able to fly from one pole to the other one in seconds. They were clueless about what they would be in for when they left in August of 1946.
As Byrd’s 13-ship naval squadron, 33 aircraft, and over 5000 soldiers reached Antarctica. A radioman aboard the USS Bronson said he and his shipmates observed for many minutes some bright lights that plummeted approximately 45 degrees into the sky very swiftly while standing on the pilothouse port side, and they couldn’t see the lights since their equipment only ran 250 miles of a straight line.
These have been just the first of Bird’s warnings. Things were going to get a lot worse, and it was coming much too soon.
The objects came up out of the water with amazing velocity, almost as if they were being followed by the devil himself, according to Lieutenant Pilot John Sarson.
He said that everyone was astonished for a second as the creature sat and floated in front of them, beckoning them to make the first move.
That’s when Byrd said it wasn’t on his orders. However, one of the ships opened fire on the UFO. This led to complete chaos, and both sides began trading fire.
It wasn’t long until the losses were too much to bear. Admiral Byrd had lost after a minor fight with the Arctic aliens. Two ships vanished totally, along with a small number of planes and a few unlucky troops.
Admiral Byrd heard a voice in his thoughts after the conflict and everything had calmed down.
This voice was the driving force behind the fleet’s visit to Antarctica.
Admiral Byrd heard voices in his brain six months before the voyage was ever planned, according to the original records.
They sent him a telegram soon after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He took a flight through one of the crevices after hearing the stories again.
This was when he encountered entities he referred to as the Masters or Earth Keepers. They told General Byrd, “You are a man of height.”
They have also added that among his people, he is a hero. They believe what he says. As a result, they’ve sent him a note. Byrd doesn’t realize how powerful the explosives he set off are.
And if they continue along this route, they will have a bleak future. These were some of the things the Masters said.
Byrd, who delivered the message 10 years later, died.
About a century ago, an amazing find was made. A cave under the earth’s surface stored several ancient giants, apparently alive, in some kind of resuscitation capsules.
The history of humanity is extremely complex . They have made us believe that the only possible canon is the one they teach us . However, it is already impossible to deny the existence of giant beings in ancient times.

Whistleblower Corey Goode claims to have spent decades in different US government secret space operations and programs.
In that time, he witnessed a lot of strange happenings, visited places that he didn’t know existed, which were inaccessible to ordinary people.
According to his account, there are sleeping giants inside underground chambers , in a state of stasis, hidden throughout the world .
He stated that during his downtime in the secret space program tasks, from 1987 to 2007, he constantly checked the information on the “intelligent glass pads” .
This was a Wikipedia type system, to which the personnel of the Solar Warden and other secret space programs had access. There was information about Earth, including ancient finds, extraterrestrial life, and advanced technologies .
Goode claimed to read information about giants that lived on Earth in the remote past. But they are currently “asleep” in capsules, as if hibernating .
One of the most important places related to this is an ancient underground chamber where the Anunnaki were kept in a state of suspended animation.
The popularizer commented that the chamber was built by an “ancient race of builders.” Being the giants that are hibernating the last of their kind .
The veracity of Goode’s claims

At the time of its disappearance, this civilization had technology that was capable of altering the flow of time . Thousands of years could pass, but for the occupant of the capsules, it would only be minutes.
Many question these statements as Goode did not provide any evidence , beyond his story.
According to him, the smart glass pads also revealed that Abraham Lincoln witnessed one of these hibernating giants. This happened in the ancient mounds that were found in the United States.
This is not entirely wrong. In fact, Lincoln gave a speech in 1848 , at Niagara Falls, where he mentions the giants:
“The eyes of that species of extinct giants, whose bones fill the mounds of America, have gazed upon Niagara, as ours do now.”
Obviously, the technology with which these capsules were manufactured is light years away from ours. Therefore, no one has managed to replicate it, despite the fact that it has been present on Earth for thousands of years .
As to the “why” of his hibernation, Goode isn’t entirely sure. However, he believes the answer could lie in the cosmic energies that the solar system is increasingly generating. This is something he says space systems have been keeping a very close eye on.
It is normal to have a certain degree of skepticism in the face of these types of complaints. However, giants are present in our earliest cultures. Our ancestors even reported how they fought against them. Is it possible that some of these specimens are hibernating to wake up at the right time?
In a partial response to a report alleging evidence of several significant anomalies during a recent private astronaut launch that could affect a crew of NASA astronauts launched last month, the space agency has issued a statement denying those claims. However, the same statement simultaneously revealed that SpaceX recently discovered a different problem with a different Crew Dragon spacecraft component during ground testing.
On May 23rd, Space Explored published a report alleging that a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft experienced major issues during Axiom-1, the company’s first all-private astronaut launch to the International Space Station (ISS). According to sourced info and a possible internal SpaceX memo, some of Dragon’s toxic propellant leaked during the 17-day flight, damaged or weakened parts of its heat shield, and “[caused] dangerously excessive wear upon reentry.” In general, the report appeared to be well-sourced and even alleged that NASA’s Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) had opened an investigation. Additionally, when approached for comment, neither NASA nor SpaceX were initially willing to speak on the record, which also meant that neither denied the accusations.
A day later, NASA provided an official statement to Space Explored explicitly denying that there has been any propellant leak, heat shield contamination, or excessive heat shield wear on any of “Dragon’s recent crew reentries.”
NASA also dismissed concerns about the reuse of a previously-flown Cargo Dragon 2 heat shield structure on Crew-4, which launched just two days after Axiom-1’s recovery and is scheduled to spend four to five more months in orbit. It also noted that the reuse of Dragon’s heat shield tiles – the structures that take the brunt of most reentry heating and are immersed in salt water after every mission – is extremely limited and has only been attempted on occasional Cargo Dragon missions.
Simultaneously, NASA revealed that “a new heat shield composite structure intended for flight on Crew-5 did not pass an acceptance test” at SpaceX’s Hawthorne, California Dragon factory. The unrelated test failure was blamed on a manufacturing defect and NASA betrayed no sign of serious concern in its statement, suggesting that the problem may be less serious than it sounds. In response, NASA says SpaceX will simply use a different heat shield composite structure for Crew-5, which is scheduled to launch no earlier than (NET) September 2022.
The data associated with Dragon’s recent crew reentries was normal – the system performed as designed without dispute. There has not been a hypergol leak during the return of a crewed Dragon mission nor any contamination with the heat shield causing excessive wear. SpaceX and NASA perform a full engineering review of the heat shield’s thermal protection system following each return, including prior to the launch of the Crew-4 mission currently at the International Space Station. The heat shield composite structure (structure below the tile) was re-flown per normal planning and refurbishment processes. The thermal protection system on the primary heat shield for Crew-4 was new, as it has been for all human spaceflight missions. SpaceX has only demonstrated reuse of selected PICA (Phenolic-Impregnated Carbon Ablator) tiles, which is a lightweight material designed to withstand high temperatures, as part of the heat shield on cargo flights.
NASA and SpaceX are currently in the process of determining hardware allocation for the agency’s upcoming SpaceX Crew-5 mission, including the Dragon heat shield. SpaceX has a rigorous testing process to put every component and system through its paces to ensure safety and reliability. In early May, a new heat shield composite structure intended for flight on Crew-5 did not pass an acceptance test. The test did its job and found a manufacturing defect. NASA and SpaceX will use another heat shield for the flight that will undergo the same rigorous testing prior to flight.
Crew safety remains the top priority for both NASA and SpaceX and we continue to target September 2022 for launch of Crew-5.
ome oddities do remain. While NASA’s explicit refutation should be taken as the definitive final word on the matter, it’s still very unusual that NASA and SpaceX refused or were unable to quickly and publicly deny the claims within a few hours of being asked. That could simply be a consequence of NASA and SpaceX’s poor internal and external communication or both parties’ love for withholding information from taxpayers about systems and technologies that those same taxpayers have paid for.

On the opposite hand, after Crew Dragon’s Demo-2 run-in with greater-than-expected heat shield wear in 2020, it’s almost impossible to imagine that NASA and SpaceX would have proceeded with Crew-4’s launch two days after Axiom-1’s recovery without confidently verifying that heat shield erosion was within normal bounds. SpaceX’s upgraded Phenolic-Impregnated Carbon Ablator (PICA-X) Dragon heat shield tiles are reportedly designed to erode [PDF] less than a centimeter of their circa-2017 ~7.5 cm (3 in) thickness after each reentry. Musk has gone even further, stating in 2012 that “[PICA-X] can potentially be used hundreds of times for Earth orbit re-entry with only minor degradation each time.” If true, it would be extremely difficult for even a brisk post-flight inspection of Axiom-1’s Dragon capsule to miss what Space Explored described as “dangerously excessive wear.”
In theory, during recovery, even a minute propellant leak should have also been immediately detected by SpaceX’s recovery team, as the very first part of the hands-on process involves a small team with gas masks and detectors approaching the floating capsule to ensure that it’s safe for others to approach. Crew Dragon’s liquid monomethylhydrazine (MMH) fuel and dinitrogen tetroxide (NTO) oxidizer are highly toxic in small quantities and MMH is a known carcinogen.
All told, news of a potential propellant leak and anomalous heat shield performance appears to have been a false alarm, although – coincidentally or not – a seemingly minor anomaly with an unflown Crew Dragon heat shield structure did occur earlier this month. Despite that anomaly, Crew-4 and Crew-5 are otherwise proceeding nominally and NASA appears to be content with Crew Dragon’s performance during several recent launches and recoveries.

On January 7, 1948, 25-year-old Captain Thomas F. Mantell, a Kentucky Air National Guard pilot, died in the crash of his P-51 Mustang fighter plane near Franklin, Kentucky, United States, after being sent in pursuit of an unidentified flying object (UFO). The event was among the most publicized early UFO incidents.
Later investigation by the United States Air Force's Project Blue Book indicated that Mantell may have died chasing a Skyhook balloon, which in 1948 was a top-secret project that he would not have known about.
Mantell pursued the object in a steep climb and disregarded suggestions to level his altitude. At high altitude he blacked out from a lack of oxygen; his plane went into a downward spiral and crashed.
In 1956, Air Force Captain Edward J. Ruppelt (the first head of Project Blue Book) wrote that the Mantell crash was one of three "classic" UFO cases in 1948 that would help to define the UFO phenomenon in the public mind, and would help convince some Air Force intelligence specialists that UFOs were a "real" physical phenomenon.

A new video has just gone viral, showing UFO hunters peering down on Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and their endeavor to test out what seems to be alien technology.
This isn’t the first time something like this has been discovered at Nellis AFB since UFO researchers have suspected the base for quite some time.
The following video was posted by UFO investigator Steven Barrone and shows what’s been described above, as the USAF looks to have already had accessibility to alien technology because they are openly trying it out in front of everyone.
The footage was taken around a month ago, and it appears to show that the US Air Force is testing night vision gadgets and UFOs and many could spot these all over their base. The footage itself does not appear to have been tampered with, since the vast majority of UFO aficionados believe it to be authentic and unedited.
To put it lightly, the Nellis Air Force Base is vast, with over 5,000 miles of remote desert area enabling them to experiment with their new technology without fear of prying eyes.
Some say the US military is in collaboration with the Tall Whites and has had a contract with them for half a century, which is why they constantly try to discredit any conspiracy theorist’s belief in these aliens. Charles Hall, a retired USAF pilot and nuclear physicist who sacrificed his entire career in the 1960s to report on his sightings, revealed the existence of the Tall Whites.

Congress held a public hearing on unidentified aerial phenomena, better known as UFOs, for the first time in 50 years.
Some researchers say scientific instruments — not just the intelligence community — should study these objects.
A growing number of private research groups are focused on detecting unidentified flying objects.
Congress held an open congressional hearing on Tuesday on unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs — better known as unidentified flying objects — for the first time in five decades.
The hearing, held before a US House Intelligence subcommittee, included testimony from defense officials following a nine-page report released last year, which investigated more than 140 instances of strange sightings by fighter aircraft instruments and pilots. Officials were only able to explain one of the incidents — a large, deflated balloon.
Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat from Indiana and chairman of the subcommittee, said at the start of the hearing that UAPs "are a potential national security threat, and they need to be treated that way."

Unexplained objects have fascinated and puzzled people for decades, but studying them has often been dismissed as pseudoscience or tabloid fodder. As these mystery sightings reenter the mainstream, however, some researchers say they need to be investigated by scientists, not just the intelligence community, in order to find answers.
Beyond tin foil hats
Last year's report confirmed the existence of unexplained aerial phenomenon, but prompted more questions than answers, Jacob Haqq-Misra, a research scientist at the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science, a non-profit that promotes space exploration, told Insider.
Some science experts theorize that these mystery objects could be anything from drones to weather-related phenomena to artifacts to sensor glitches — or even the handiwork of aliens. But the report did not include enough data to conclusively make that determination.
Since UAPs have long inspired conspiracy theories, researchers like Haqq-Misra believe the government should give scientists more access to data and allow inquiries to happen in the open, rather than behind closed doors.
Tuesday's public hearing was followed by a closed session, which scientists like Haqq-Misra expect will have the information they really want: "We really need transparency and new data if we want to solve this problem," he said.
The report included first-person accounts, which have the potential for human error. Haqq-Misra said UAPs should be studied with satellites, fast-tracking cameras, or audio sensors at locations where the unusual signals have been spotted: "What we need is to collect data in a systematic way — stare at this whole sky in many locations for long periods of time, and with many different instruments, and see how many things, if any, show up that you can't identify."
For decades, it's also been a taboo subject for scientists and dismissed as pseudoscience. Government officials even rebranded UFOs as unidentified aerial phenomena, in part, to avoid the stigma attached to claims of alien visitors. Researchers hope a scientific pursuit for answers, and more transparency, could help overcome that stigma, according to Ravi Kopparapu, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
"There is a process to understand unknown phenomena," Kopparapu told Insider. "We should not jump to conclusions one way or another, about either dismissal or jumping to some exotic explanation."
From the fringes to serious science

Kopparapu said that there are a growing number of privately funded research groups focused on the systematic study of unidentified aerial phenomena, such as Harvard's Galileo Project and UAPx, a research non-profit. (The Galileo Project is helmed by Avi Loeb, a prominent and controversial astronomy professor, who has beencriticized for including outspoken UFO proponents, without science backgrounds, on the project.)
"I think this is a great opportunity for scientists to show the public how a scientific investigation can be done of something that is unknown," Kopparapu told Insider.
NASA does not actively search for UAPs, according to the agency's website. "If we learn of UAPs, it would open up the door to new science questions to explore," according to NASA. "Atmospheric scientists, aerospace experts, and other scientists could all contribute to understanding the nature of the phenomenon. Exploring the unknown in space is at the heart of who we are."
In the meantime, the Galileo Project is designing software to screen data coming from large telescopes for interstellar objects, and developing a network of sky cameras searching for signs of alien life. This spring, the team plans to install the first of hundreds of cameras — which capture both infrared and visible light — and audio sensors on the roof of Harvard College Observatory, to record everything that moves through the sky, 24 hours a day.
"We are moving away from a time where we were just thinking about them as some sort of tabloid news," Kopparapu said, adding, "These objects exist. And if we want to understand them, we need to use the same technologies and scientific instruments that we use to study our everyday world around us."
Sightings of unexplained objects in the sky have long captured human imagination and raised questions about national security and even potential alien life. But these questions will remain unanswered if they're not subjected to rigorous scientific inquiry, researchers say.
"I think it's significant that branches of the military are acknowledging that there's a thing that's supposed to be in their jurisdiction that they don't understand," Haqq-Misra told Insider. "If they're willing to do that, I think then it really, truly is a puzzle and we've got to figure out what this is."
Kopparapu seemed to agree: "Science should be the forefront in understanding this unknown phenomena," he said, adding, "I hope there is more interest from scientists and I'm eager to see what's going to happen in the next couple of weeks with all this news."

The Pentagon acknowledged Tuesday that while U.S. assets have never collided with anything the military categorizes as unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), this has almost happened on nearly a dozen occasions.
Deputy Director of Navy Intelligence Scott Bray revealed this at a House Intelligence Committee hearing on UFOs, when asked by Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, D-Ill., to confirm that there have never been any crashes.
"We have not had a collision. We've had at least 11 near misses, though," Bray said.

Krishnamoorthi then asked if the U.S. has ever detected communication signals of any kind from these objects, and Bray said they had not. Bray also confirmed, however, that the U.S. has never tried to communicate with them.
"So we don't even put out an alert saying, you know, U.S., identify yourself. You know, you're in our flight path or something like that?" Krishnamoorthi asked.
"We've not put out anything like that," Bray said, adding that these objects, such as one that officials showed House members earlier in the hearing, appeared to be unmanned objects "that may or may not be in controlled flight."
Bray also confirmed that the U.S. has never fired upon any of the objects.

The congressman then asked about whether the U.S. has ever found wreckage that they could not identify. Bray said the UAP Task Force "doesn't have any wreckage that isn't explainable" or "consistent with being of terrestrial origin."
Bray later noted that some UAPs are not necessarily "physical objects," but could be sensor anomalies or meteorological phenomena. He did say, however, that he knows "with certainty" that "a number of these are physical objects.
The hearing was the first public one of its kind in 50 years. Officials released declassified photos and videos of UFOs, including a brief and shaky video where a small object appeared to zip past a military pilot, and a separate video where glowing triangles are seen in the night sky.

De ruimtesteen – die een diameter van zo’n 1000 meter heeft – passeert onze planeet op een afstand van ‘slechts’ iets meer dan 4 miljoen kilometer.
De planetoïde in kwestie draagt de naam 7335 1989JA. En komende woensdag om 16.26 uur zal de afstand tussen de ruimtesteen en onze planeet het kleinst zijn en 4.02 miljoen kilometer bedragen. Daarmee is de afstand tussen onze planeet en de ruimtesteen ongeveer 10 keer groter dan de afstand tussen de aarde en de maan.
Geen paniek We hebben dan ook niets van deze ruimtesteen te vrezen, zo benadrukt NASA. Toch is het wel een bijzondere scheervlucht. Want met een omvang van 1036 meter is 7335 1989JA tamelijk uniek. Van de bijna 29.000 aardscheerders – planetoïden die zich in de nabijheid van onze planeet wagen – die tot op heden zijn ontdekt, zijn er slechts 878 groter dan 1000 meter.
Het komt dan ook niet zo heel vaak voor dat zo’n grote planetoïde zich in de buurt van de aarde waagt. Sterker nog; 7335 1989JA is de grootste planetoïde die dit jaar op relatief kleine afstand langs de aarde scheert.
Meer scheervluchten Dat ruimtestenen langs onze planeet scheren is op zichzelf natuurlijk niet heel bijzonder. Volgens NASA zijn er elke maand zelfs tientallen ruimtestenen die binnen een afstand van 0,05 AU (oftewel 0,05 keer de afstand tussen de aarde en de zon, oftewel bijna 7,5 miljoen kilometer) langs de aarde zoeven. Sommigen daarvan kennen we al jaren. Maar het komt ook regelmatig voor dat een planetoïde pas kort voor dat deze zich in de nabijheid van onze planeet waagt, wordt ontdekt.
Geen gevaar Hoewel de meeste aardscheerders vrij klein zijn en dus geen enorme bedreiging voor de aarde vormen, zijn er natuurlijk ook exemplaren bij die qua grootte angst inboezemen. Op dit moment zijn onderzoekers echter geen grote planetoïden bekend die op korte termijn (in de komende 100 jaar ) een significante bedreiging voor de aarde vormen.
Potentieel gevaarlijk Wel is er een lijst met potentieel gevaarlijke planetoïden. Op deze lijst vinden we meer dan 2000 planetoïden die zich zo af en toe binnen 7,5 miljoen kilometer afstand van de aarde wagen en/of groter zijn dan 140 meter. Ook 7335 1989JA kan op basis van die definitie tot de potentieel gevaarlijke planetoïden worden gerekend. Dat wil zeker niet zeggen dat deze gedoemd is om in de toekomst een gevaar voor de aarde te gaan vormen. Het geeft alleen maar aan dat we hier te maken hebben met een planetoïde die zich relatief dicht in de buurt van de aarde waagt én een zodanige omvang heeft dat een botsing met de aarde catastrofale gevolgen zou hebben. Of zo’n botsing ook plaats gaat vinden, is een ander verhaal; dat is sterk afhankelijk van de baan van de ruimtesteen. Zodra nieuwe aardscheerders worden ontdekt, proberen astronomen dan ook zoveel mogelijk waarnemingen te doen om de baan ervan zo nauwkeurig mogelijk vast te stellen. Want als je weet welke baan een planetoïde volgt, kun je gaan voorspellen waar deze zich in de toekomst bevindt en nagaan of deze in die toekomst gevaarlijk dicht bij de aarde in de buurt komt. En nogmaals; voor de ons bekende potentieel gevaarlijke planetoïden geldt dus dat er geen één is die op korte termijn – dus in de komende 100 jaar – een significante kans heeft om op de aarde te slaan.
Toekomstige scheervluchten Ook 7335 1989JA dus niet. Van de baan van deze planetoïde hebben astronomen inmiddels ook een vrij goed beeld. Zo weten ze bijvoorbeeld dat deze in juni 2055 opnieuw langs de aarde zal scheren. En ook in mei 2081 en mei 2114 komt de planetoïde weer even langs. Tijdens geen van deze scheervluchten komt de planetoïde echter zo dichtbij als komende woensdag het geval is.
Hoewel ons op dit moment geen planetoïden bekend zijn die een gevaar voor de aarde vormen, weten we dat onze planeet niet altijd de dans kan ontspringen. Zo zijn op het aardoppervlak zijn verschillende kraters te vinden die getuigen van eerdere inslagen. Sommige daarvan – zoals de inslag zo’n 66 miljoen jaar geleden in wat nu Mexico is – hadden een enorme impact op onze planeet. Mocht er in de toekomst toch onverhoopt een forse planetoïde op ramkoers met de aarde komen te liggen dan hopen onderzoekers een vergelijkbaar doemscenario af te kunnen wenden. En wel door de baan van de planetoïde te wijzigen. Daar zal binnenkort al een beetje mee geoefend gaan worden, tijdens de DART-missie. Deze missie voert naar de planetoïde Didymos waar een klein maantje – Dimorphos genaamd – omheen cirkelt. Tijdens de missie zal het DART-ruimtevaartuig zichzelf opzettelijk tegen het kleine maantje te pletter vliegen, met als doel de baan ervan te veranderen. Het experiment moet uitwijzen of de methode geschikt is om in de toekomst gevaarlijke planetoïden af te buigen.
