Scientists have made a stunning discovery in the outer realm of the solar system an asteroid with its own set of rings that orbits the sun between Saturn and Uranus. The space rock is the first non-planetary object ever found to have its own ring system, researchers say.
The pair of space rock rings encircle the asteroid Chariklo. They were most likely formed after a collision scattered debris around the asteroid, according to a new study unveiled today March 27). The asteroid rings also suggests the presence of a still-undiscovered moon around Chariklo that’s keeping them stable, researchers said.
“We weren’t looking for a ring and didn’t think small bodies like Chariklo had them at all, so the discovery — and the amazing amount of detail we saw in the system — came as a complete surprise!” study leader Felipe Braga-Ribas, of the National Observatory in Brazil said in a statement today. Astronomers used seven telescopes, but just one revealed the pair of rings orbiting the rocky Chariklo. The asteroid’s 155-mile-diameter (250 kilometers) is dwarfed by the giant gas planets, the only other bodies known to have rings.
“This discovery shows that size is not important in order to have — or not have — rings,” Felipe Braga-Ribas, of the National Observatory in Brazil, told Space.com by email.
An asteroid among giants
On June 3, 2013, Braga-Ribas led a team of astronomers in observing Chariklo as it passed in front of a distant star — a process known as an occultation. As the asteroid traveled, it blocked light from the star, enabling scientists to learn more about it. [The Strangest Asteroids in the Solar System]
The astronomers were surprised to discover that a few seconds before and after the main occultation, the light dimmed slightly, indicating that something circled the rocky asteroid. By comparing the data gathered from seven different telescopes, the team was able to identify the shape, size and orientation of the rings.
The system consists of a dense, 4-mile-wide (7 km) ring near the planet, and a smaller 2-mile-wide (3 km) ring farther out.
From the surface of the asteroid, “they would be two spectacular sharp and really bright rings, crossing all the sky,” Braga-Ribas said. “They would be noticeably close, as they are at about 1/1,000 of the moon’s distance from us,” he added.
He went on to say that the larger, inner ring would block the view of the outer ring from the ground. The rings are similar to those around Saturn, in that both are very dense, bright and possibly formed by rock and water ice. But their scales are quite different.
“The whole Chariklo system would fit about 12 times in the Cassini Division,” Braga-Ribas said, referring to the largest gap in Saturn’s rings.
One of the most unusual legends to come around that most people would scoff at immediately and wave their hand in the air, bemoaning all conspiracy theories, is the concept of alien bases on earth. These bases, some attribute to being hidden underwater (hence the sightings of USOs, unidentified submersible objects and a vast ocean to hide in) and others believed to be underground.
Part of this legend includes the concept that the aliens have equipped in the earth, silos that can take out any intruders, be it meteor or alien race, and keep us under their safe keeping.
Let’s talk about some of the correlations being made:
Tunguska
TUNGUSKA – Siberia 1908 – an enormous explosion destroyed hundreds of square miles and it was believed to be caused by a meteor that was made up of mostly ice and exploded above the ground, not leaving a real crater. But,Yuri Lavbin has spent 12 years researching the mystery of the “Tunguska meteorite” and believes he has found the key to one of the great scientific enigmas of the last century, though many scientists remain sceptical. He is president of the “Tunguska Spatial Phenomenon” Foundation in Krasnoyarsk, made up of some 15 enthusiasts, among them geologists, chemists, physicists and mineralogists, who have been organising regular expeditions to the area since 1994. Lavbin’s theory is that a comet and a mysterious flying machine collided 10 kilometres (six miles) above the earth’s surface causing the explosion. He and his team say that on an expedition to the Podkamannaya Tunguska river in July they found, between two villages, two strange black stones in the form of regular cubes with their sides measuring a metre and half (five feet). These stones “are manifestly not of natural origin,” Lavbin says. They appear to have been fired and “their material recalls an alloy used to make space rockets, while at the beginning of the 20th century only planes made of plywood existed.” He claims that the cubes are the remains of a flying machine, perhaps an extraterrestrial spaceship, while admitting that an analysis of the stones has yet to be undertaken. He found something else: a huge white stone “the size of a peasant’s hut” stuck in the top of a crag in the middle of the devastated forest. “Local people call it the ‘reindeer stone’. It is made of a crystalline matter which is not typical of this region,” Lavbin said. He suggests it is part of the core of a comet.

Another bit of evidence some believe supports this theory is this NASA footage (go to the 40-second mark) Was this an alien base shooting an incoming competitive alien craft? That’s what some believe.
UFOs Over Military Sites
Other supporting evidence includes the UFOs that hovered over missile silos and other strategic places in the latter 1960s. It’s believed by some that this was a show of curiosity about what we might be doing to destroy the very planet they help to populate and develop.
Fast Development Of Technology
Some would say that advances in our technology coincided with us discovering one of the bases and being forced to capitulate to our very designers and protectors.
This is not our planet, would be the assumption, we are only leasing.
Area 51
As if to add more fuel to the fire, some believe there is more proof that aliens have been among us and that Area 51 is the seat of much knowledge in that regards. They say that Bob Lazar who claimed to help work on reverse engineering UFOs was accurate in his depiction of how they do it – especially now that the element UnUnPentium has been found!
Wikipedia: For the propulsion of the studied vehicles, Bob Lazarclaims that the atomic Element 115 served as the fuel. Element 115 (temporarily named “ununpentium” (symbol Uup)) reportedly generates a miniscule gravity field which can be tapped and greatly amplified because the field happens to extend just beyond each atom’s outermost electron shell. Exactly how this field is accessed, however, remains unclear. But the end result is allegedly a highly directional gravity distortion field. Under proton bombardment, furthermore, it is claimed that the atoms of Element 115 produce antimatter particles which participate in a process of extremely efficient energy production for powering any and all systems and subsystems within the craft. The mass of the nuclear fuel aboard each craft was said to be approximately two kilograms and was enough to last for several years before requiring replenishment. The large-scale gravity distortion effect is produced by three independently steerable waveguides or tubes within the craft and results in a foreshortening or compression of space-time that would, in effect, greatly shorten the distance and travel time either to a local or interplanetary or, possibly, an interstellar destination.
Interestingly, in 2003 – (Discover Magazine) – an international team of nuclear physicists and chemists found new and confirming evidence that establishes another new chemical element — one of the growing family of superheavy substances. The team created 30 atoms of element 115 by firing a beam of calcium atoms at a piece of americium foil. The radioactive ununpentium (a temporary name meaning “one-one-five”) existed for only a fraction of a second before decaying into other elements. Next, physicists and chemists will try to make more of the mysterious metal to explore its “table manners” — its properties and structure.
Abductions
Alien abductions are also talked about being a way that the aliens manage to check in on our development, how we evolved and adapt to our changing conditions and planet.
In Conclusion ….
Evidence seems to accumulate that aliens do visit the earth and they use craft and then they retreat and they are interested in us and what we are doing and they may even feel a pride of ownership in this experiment called Earth.
If one adds up some of the weird occurrences relating to aliens and UFOs, this explanation, as outlandish as it sounds, holds some promise as for motivation for visiting us on this planet.
Are they really from an origin far away? I’d find that hard to believe, not just by means of getting here from that distance, but because if they had bases here and craft, over time they would need to produce metal for repairs and other elements that would be quite obvious that they were smelting and preparing and utilizing our resources. It’s not like they have a UFO factory here and it is not something they could necessarily do underground or undersea. They would have to exposed to get what they need.
So, that leaves us with another possibility, that they are trekking back and forth from another realm/world/dimension and can go back and forth readily, leaving them not exposed to our sightings as much as they would be if they were existing here. In other words, they come, check on us yearlings, and then go back. Any protection systems they have planted in our world, would go off automatically when incoming arrives, kindof like a security system in a home.
Do I subscribe to this concept of alien bases? Not really, but it certainly ties up a lot of different concepts together, so kudos on the theory!

What Is the Big Bang Theory?

The Big Bang Theory is the leading explanation about how the universe began. At its simplest, it talks about the universe as we know it starting with a small singularity, then inflating over the next 13.8 billion years to the cosmos that we know today.
Because current instruments don't allow astronomers to peer back at the universe's birth, much of what we understand about the Big Bang Theory comes from mathematical theory and models. Astronomers can, however, see the "echo" of the expansion through a phenomenon known as the cosmic microwave background.
The phrase "Big Bang Theory" has been popular among astrophysicists for decades, but it hit the mainstream in 2007 when a comedy show with the same name premiered on CBS. The show follows the home and academic life of several researchers (including an astrophysicist).
The first second, and the birth of light
In the first second after the universe began, the surrounding temperature was about 10 billion degrees Fahrenheit (5.5 billion Celsius), according to NASA. The cosmos contained a vast array of fundamental particles such as neutrons, electrons and protons. These decayed or combined as the universe got cooler.
This early soup would have been impossible to look at, because light could not carry inside of it. "The free electrons would have caused light (photons) to scatter the way sunlight scatters from the water droplets in clouds," NASA stated. Over time, however, the free electrons met up with nuclei and created neutral atoms. This allowed light to shine through about 380,000 years after the Big Bang.
This early light — sometimes called the "afterglow" of the Big Bang — is more properly known as the cosmic microwave background (CMB). It was first predicted by Ralph Alpher and other scientists in 1948, but was found only by accident almost 20 years later. [Images: Peering Back to the Big Bang & Early Universe]
Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, both of Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, were building a radio receiver in 1965 and picking up higher-than-expected temperatures, according to NASA. At first, they thought the anomaly was due to pigeons and their dung, but even after cleaning up the mess and killing pigeons that tried to roost inside the antenna, the anomaly persisted.
Simultaneously, a Princeton University team (led by Robert Dicke) was trying to find evidence of the CMB, and realized that Penzias and Wilson had stumbled upon it. The teams each published papers in the Astrophysical Journal in 1965.
Determining the age of the universe
The cosmic microwave background has been observed on many missions. One of the most famous space-faring missions was NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite, which mapped the sky in the 1990s.
Several other missions have followed in COBE's footsteps, such as the BOOMERanG experiment (Balloon Observations of Millimetric Extragalactic Radiation and Geophysics), NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and the European Space Agency's Planck satellite.
Planck's observations, released in 2013, mapped the background in unprecedented detail and revealed that the universe was older than previously thought: 13.82 billion years old, rather than 13.7 billion years old. [Related: How Old is the Universe?]
Examining the CMB also gives astronomers clues as to the composition of the universe. Researchers think most of the cosmos is made up of matter and energy that cannot be "sensed" with conventional instruments, leading to the names dark matter and dark energy. Only 5 percent of the universe is made up of matter such as planets, stars and galaxies.

Gravitational waves spotted?
While astronomers could see the universe's beginnings, they've also been seeking out proof of its rapid inflation. Theory says that in the first second after the universe was born, our cosmos ballooned faster than the speed of light. That, by the way, does not violate Albert Einstein's speed limit since he said that light is the maximum anything can travel within the universe. That did not apply to the inflation of the universe itself.
While the finding has to be scrutinized by independent researchers, the researchers told Space.com that they are confident it will be confirmed. They spent several years examining the information to make sure that the telescope did not generate a false signal.
"We're very confident that the signal that we're seeing is real, and it's on the sky," lead researcher John Kovac, of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Space.com in March 2014.
"It's going to be controversial," he added. "We can expect that people will try to shoot at it from every direction, and we invite that — that's the scientific process, and it'll be fun and interesting."
Faster inflation, multiverses and charting the start
The universe is not only expanding, but getting faster as it inflates. This means that with time, nobody will be able to spot other galaxies from Earth, or any other vantage point within our galaxy.
"We will see distant galaxies moving away from us, but their speed is increasing with time," Harvard University astronomer Avi Loeb said in a March 2014 Space.com article.
"So, if you wait long enough, eventually, a distant galaxy will reach the speed of light. What that means is that even light won't be able to bridge the gap that's being opened between that galaxy and us. There's no way for extraterrestrials on that galaxy to communicate with us, to send any signals that will reach us, once their galaxy is moving faster than light relative to us."
Some physicists also suggest that the universe we experience is just one of many. In the "multiverse" model, different universes would coexist with each other like bubbles lying side by side. The theory suggests that in that first big push of inflation, different parts of space-time grew at different rates. This could have carved off different sections — different universes — with potentially different laws of physics.
"It's hard to build models of inflation that don't lead to a multiverse," Alan Guth, a theoretical physicist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said during a news conference in March 2014 concerning the gravitational waves discovery. (Guth is not affiliated with that study.)
"It's not impossible, so I think there's still certainly research that needs to be done. But most models of inflation do lead to a multiverse, and evidence for inflation will be pushing us in the direction of taking [the idea of a] multiverse seriously."
While we can understand how the universe we see came to be, it's possible that the Big Bang was not the first inflationary period the universe experienced. Some scientists believe we live in a cosmos that goes through regular cycles of inflation and deflation, and that we just happen to be living in one of these phases.

The Drake Equation is used to estimate the number of communicating civilizations in the cosmos, or more simply put, the odds of finding intelligent life in the universe.
N = The number of civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.
R* =The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.
fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.
ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.
fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.
fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.
fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.
L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.
The challenge (at least for now) is that astronomers don't have firm numbers on any of those variables, so any calculation of the Drake Equation remains a rough estimate for now. There have been, however, discoveries in some of these fields that give astronomers a better chance of finding the answer.
Exoplanet discoveries
Astronomers certainly could imagine the existence of other planets outside the solar system in 1961, but it took until 1995 until the first confirmed exoplanet was found. Called 51 Pegasi b, the discovery ushered in a new era where astronomers were able to track down first dozens, and then hundreds, of other planets across the universe.
Traditionally, planets have been found through two methods: watching them transit across a star (which causes a dimming that can be measured from Earth) or examining the gravitational wobbles the planets induce as they orbit around their parent star. More recently, a technique called "verification by multiplicity" allows astronomers to quickly identify multiple-planet systems.
Estimating the total number of planets in the universe is difficult, but one statistical study suggests that in the Milky Way, each star has an average of 1.6 planets – yielding 160 billion alien planets in our home galaxy. (The study used a technique called gravitational lensing that observes changes in light curves when a relatively nearby star passes in front of more distant objects.) As of March 2014, more than 1,700 exoplanets have been confirmed. The vast bulk of them were due to an observatory called the Kepler Space Telescope, which scrutinized a single spot in the Cygnus constellation between 2009 and 2013. Plumbing the data, astronomers continue to make discoveries from the information.
To date, most of the planets that have been discovered were Jupiter-sized or larger, but this may be because these gas giants are easier to spot in telescopes. A slew of Kepler discoveries announced in February 2014 mainly contained super-Earths, or planets that are slightly larger than Earth and are considered by many astronomers to be habitable under the right conditions.
Among the planets discovered by all telescopes, however, only a tiny fraction of them are likely to have an environment suitable for life. Astronomers can't measure this metric for sure yet, but a few factors likely come into play, such as how close a planet is to its parent star and what its atmosphere contains.
As of March 2014, the Habitable Exoplanets Catalog identified 20 confirmed planets that could be suitable for life, and 69 planets (yet to be confirmed) that could also be suitable. The project is a part of the Planetary Habitability Laboratory at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo.
"These are artistic representations of all the planets around other stars (exoplanets) with any potential to support surface life as we know it," the catalog states below an illustration of the planets. "All of them are larger than Earth and we are less certain about their composition and habitability, but they represent the best objects of interest for future observations." Finding life outside of Earth — even microbial life — would be an important step toward better understanding the Drake Equation. Astronomers in fact have not given up on finding life within our own solar system. There are several areas that could host habitable environments now, or did in the past, such as the planet Mars or Jupiter's moon Europa.
A next step would be determining how to send a message to extraterrestrials and whether they could receive or understand it. On a small scale, astronomers have beamed messages to the stars and in a few cases, put discs on board spacecraft (such as Voyager) for anyone in the neighborhood to read and potentially find Earth for further communications.

U.S. President Jimmy Carter has talked about his 1969 encounter with an unidentified flying object several times over the years. He’s never really been of the opinion that what he saw was an alien spacecraft, but maintains that he doesn’t quite know what it was, either.
On the latest episode of The Brian Lehrer Show, Carter again explains his experience, breaking it down in a straightforward fashion: “I don’t claim that it came from outer space,” he tells Lehrer, “But it was unidentified, it was flying, and it was an object.”
Carter was on the show promoting his new bookA Call to Action: Women, Religion, Violence and Power, which focuses on gender inequality around the world. The UFO thing was more of a sidebar.
One of the more recent times Carter has discussed the UFO incident was in a 2005 interview in GQ, in which he said:
I saw an unidentified flying object. I’ve never believed that it came from Mars. I know enough physics to know that you can’t have vehicles that are tangible in nature flying from Mars, looking around, and then flying back. But I saw an object one night when I was preparing to give a speech to a Lions Club. There were about twenty-five of us men standing around. It was almost time for the Lions Club supper to start, which I would eat and then I would give a speech. I was in charge of fifty-six Lions Clubs in southwest Georgia back in the late ’60s. And all of a sudden, one of the men looked up and said, “Look, over in the west!” And there was a bright light in the sky. We all saw it. And then the light, it got closer and closer to us. And then it stopped, I don’t know how far away, but it stopped beyond the pine trees. And all of a sudden it changed colour to blue, and then it changed to red, then back to white. And we were trying to figure out what in the world it could be, and then it receded into the distance. I had a tape recorder — because as I met with members of Lions Clubs, I would dictate their names on the tapes so I could remember them — and I dictated my observations. And when I got home, I wrote them down. So that’s an accurate description of what I saw. It was a flying object that was unidentified. But I have never thought that it was from outer space.
You know, I still think it could’ve been an alien ship. But then, I want to believe.

FCN: Now it sounded kind of like an “air raid,” sort of. What are the people hearing this describing? The people who say that they’ve heard these sounds? What do they feel? Do they feel scared?
JM: No, they feel—they feel impressed; they feel impressed, like, ‘What is this? What is this?’—they feel nervous. Not as scared, not as scared, but nervous? Yes. Because, when you don’t know where that is coming from, you have to be nervous. That is all. But I think it’s a connection. Something is going to happen, soon. Sooner than later.
FCN: Now my last question: Since 2011 when you were with us in Chicago, have there been any new developments? Has anything changed, has anything happened that we can update the readers and listeners with?
JM: Uh, well, so many things! I mean, not just the sounds, The Motherships. Now we have so many sightings of The Motherships. We have so many invisible UFOs—now we know there are things that are probably—we have something there, but If we don’t use the special equipment*, we won’t see it. It’s very diffi cult for us to understand, but there is something going on—you know?
FCN: Yes.
JM: It’s so much! I mean, we would be scared if we knew how many are there, outside, watching us. And I think the new equipment— and I tell Minister Farrakhan— that I recommend to get this equipment, and be watching constantly! Because he is going to have the answers he is looking for—very soon!

Mysterious Planet Sized ‘Death Star’ Appears to ‘Refuel’ at the Surface of the Sun
Watch and see a PROBE go into the sun to ?refuel? this craft in space! An orbiting Nasa space telescope captured a dark, planet-sized object near the sun and extending what looks like a refueling tube into the star’s surface.
It had happened in 1956. Cruising at 19,000 feet, a Navy R7V-2 transport – a four-engine Super-Constellation – was flying west across the Atlantic Ocean. The next stop was Gander, Newfoundland. Final destination, Naval Air Station, Patuxent, Maryland. The night was clear, visibility unlimited. In the senior pilot’s seat, Commander George Benton was checking the dim-lit instruments. At thirty-four, Benton had a decade of Navy flying behind him. He had made the Atlantic crossing more than two hundred times. Back in the cabin were two extra Navy air crews, en route home from foreign duty. Most of these men were asleep. Including Benton’s regular and relief crews, there were nearly 30 airmen-pilots, navigators and flight engineers aboard the Constellation. As Commander Benton finished his cockpit check, he glanced out at the stars. Then he leaned forward, puzzled. A few minutes before, the sea below had been dark. Now there was a cluster of lights, like a village, about twenty-five miles ahead. Benton looked over at his co-pilot, Lieutenant Peter W. Mooney. “What do you make of those lights?” Mooney peered down, startled. “Looks like a small town!” “That’s what I thought.” Benton quickly called the navigator, Lieutenant Alfred C. Erdman. “We must be way off course. There’s land down there.” “It can’t be land.” Erdman hurried forward from his map table. “That last star sight shows…” He broke off, staring down at the clustered lights. “Well?” said Benton. “They must be ships,” said Erdman. “Maybe a rendezvous for some special operation.” Giant Flying Saucers “They don’t look like ships,” said Benton. He called Radioman John Wiggins. No word of any unusual ship movements, Wiggins reported. And no signals from the location of the lights. If they were ships, they were keeping radio silence. “Wake up those other crews,” Benton told Erdman. “Maybe somebody can dope it out.” In a few moments, two or three airmen crowded into the cockpit. Benton cut off the automatic pilot, banked to give them and the men in the cabin a better view. As the transport began to circle, the strange lights abruptly dimmed. Then several colored rings appeared, began to spread out. One, Benton noticed, seemed to be growing in size. Behind him, someone gave an exclamation. Benton took another look. That luminous ring wasn’t on the surface – it was something rushing up toward the transport.
”What the devil is it?” said Mooney. “Don’t know,” muttered Benton. He rolled the Constellation out of its turn to start a full-power climb. Then he saw it was useless. The luminous ring could catch them in seconds. The glow, he now saw, came from the rim of some large, round object. It reached their altitude, swiftly took shape as a giant disc-shaped machine. Dwarfing the Constellation, it raced in toward them. “It’s going to hit us!” said Erdman. Benton had known normal fear, but this was nightmare. Numbed, he waited for the crash. Suddenly the giant disc tilted. Its speed sharply reduced, it angled on past the port wing. The commander let out his breath. He looked at Mooney’s white face, saw the others’ stunned expressions. Watching out the port window, he cautiously started to bank. He stopped as he saw the disc. It had swung around, was drawing abreast, pacing them at about one hundred yards. For a moment he had a clear glimpse of the monster. Its sheer bulk was amazing; its diameter was three to four times the Constellation’s wing span. At least thirty feet thick at the center, it was like a gigantic dish inverted on top of another. Seen at this distance, the glow along the rim was blurred and uneven. Whether it was an electrical effect, a series of jet exhausts or lights from opening in the rim, Benton could not tell. But the glow was bright enough to show the disc’s curving surface, giving a hint of dully reflecting metal. Though Benton saw no signs of life, he had a feeling they were being observed. Fighting an impulse to dive away, he held to a straight course. Gradually, the strange machine pulled ahead. Tilting its massive shape upward, it quickly accelerated and was lost against the stars.
Commander Benton reached for his microphone, called Gander Airport and identified himself. “You show any other traffic out here?” he asked the tower. “We had something on the scope near you,” Gander told him. “But we couldn’t get an answer.” “We saw it,” Benton said grimly. “It was no aircraft.” He gave the tower a concise report, and back at Gander teletype messages were rushed to the U.S. Air Defense Command, the Commanding Officer, Eastern Sea Frontier, the Director of Air Force Intelligence and the Air Technical Intelligence Center. When the Constellation landed at Gander, Air Force intelligence officers met the transport. From the start, it was plain they accepted the giant disc sighting as fact.
For two hours, Benton and the rest were carefully interrogated[debriefed], separately and together: How close did the object come? What was its size… estimated rate of climb… any electrical interference noted… what happened to the other luminous rings? From the answers to scores of questions, the majority opinion emerged. The flying disc was between 350 and 400 feet in diameter, and apparently metallic. No interference with ignition noted; instruments not observed and radio not operating during this brief period. Time for the giant disc to climb to the transport’s altitude, between five and eight seconds, indicated speed between 1,400 and 2,200 knots; the disc had accelerated above this speed on departure. Not all the men in the cabin had seen the luminous rings. Of those who had, most were watching the huge disc approach and did not see the “rings” disappear. If they, too, were flying discs, in a rendezvous as some suggested, they apparently had raced off while the other one was checking on the Constellation. At one point, an Intelligence captain asked Benton if he had seen any indication of life abroad the disc. Intelligently Controlled “No, but it was intelligently controlled, that’s certain. Benton looked at him closely. “That size, it would hardly be remote-controlled, would it?” “I couldn’t say,” replied the Air Force man. Nor would he tell what the Gander Airport radar had shown about the disc’s speed and maneuvers. “What’s behind all this?” demanded Mooney. “Up to now, I believed the Air Force. You people say there aren’t any flying saucer…” “Sorry, I can’t answer any questions,” said the captain. “Why not? After a scare like that, we’ve got a right to know what’s going on.”
The Intelligence officer shook his head. “I can’t answer any questions,” he repeated. As quickly as possible, intelligence reports with full details were flashed to the four Defense commanders already notified, with an extra message for the Director of Naval Intelligence. After the Constellation reached Patuxent, the air crews were interviewed [debriefed] again, by Navy order. Each man made a written report, with his opinion of what he had seen. Five days later, Commander Benton had a phone call from a scientist in a high government agency. “I’m informed you had a close-up UFO sighting. I’d like to see you.” Benton checked, found the man was cleared by the Navy. Next day, the scientist appeared, showed his credential, listened intently to Benton’s report. Then he unlocked a dispatch case and took out some photographs. “Was it like any of these?” At the third picture, Benton stopped him. “That’s it!” He looked sharply at the scientist. “Somebody must know the answers, if you’ve got photographs of the things.” The other man took the pictures. “I’m sorry, Commander.” He closed his dispatch case and left. Een team wetenschappers van het British Museum heeft acht Egyptische mummies onder een CT-scanner gelegd en kwam tot fascinerende ontdekkingen. Zo bleek een vrouwelijke mummie op de binnenkant van haar rechterdij een tatoeage te hebben van aartsengel Michaël.
De acht mummies stammen uit verschillende tijdperken en zijn afkomstig uit alle lagen van de bevolking, van koninklijke personages tot gewone burgers die langs de Nijl leefden. De oudste mummie die door het team is onderzocht, is meer dan 5500 jaar oud. De jongste dateert van 1300 jaar geleden.
De mummies werden in Londen onderworpen aan een CT-scan. Voor het eerst werd bekend wat al die tijd onder de linnen doeken verborgen lag. Met behulp van de scan konden wetenschappers een 3D-weergave maken van de oude resten. Op deze manier werden botten, weefsel en organen zichtbaar gemaakt.
De Egyptenaren bleken last te hebben van aandoeningen die we normaal vooral met onze tijd associëren: hart- en vaatziekten en tandproblemen. Op het lichaam van de mummie van een vrouw, tussen de 20 en 35 jaar oud toen ze stierf, werd bovendien een tatoeage ontdekt. Dr. David Antoine, curator van het British Museum, sprak van een ‘werkelijk unieke en opvallende vondst’.
De 1300 jaar oude vrouwelijke mummie was anders dan de overige mummies omdat de resten van de vrouw zijn gevonden in Soedan. Als gevolg van de warme en droge omgeving is haar lichaam goed bewaard gebleven. Haar tatoeage bevat het symbool van de aartsengel Michaël, die wordt genoemd in het Oude en Nieuwe Testament en die in de middeleeuwen de beschermer was van Soedan.
“De tatoeage op haar rechterdij is een monogram voor Michaël in het Oudgrieks,” zei dr. Antoine. “We hebben andere voorbeelden gevonden van dit monogram, maar nooit in de vorm van een tatoeage.”
De naam van aartsengel Michaël heeft voor zowel Joden, christenen als moslims een heilige betekenis. In het Nieuwe Testament verslaat hij satan tijdens een gevecht in de hemel. In de vierde eeuw begonnen de eerste heiligdommen te verschijnen die waren gewijd aan Michaël, toen hij voor het eerst werd gezien als een genezende engel. Later zag men hem als beschermer en aanvoerder van de strijdkrachten tegen de krachten van het kwaad.
Op 22 mei aanstaande zal een tentoonstelling worden geopend die gewijd is aan de mummies en de onderzoeksresultaten, getiteld ‘Ancient Lives: New Discoveries’.

A MUM has been left baffled after spotting a flying saucer-shaped object hovering over a nearby college on a live weather webcam feed.
Denise Poole, 52, said she thought she was seeing things after spotting the flying object in her daily weather check of her home island of Guernsey.
In the photos of the glowing orb, a striking red line runs through the blue disc, which has been a common trait reported in UFO sightings in the past.
Mum-of-one Denise said the object was moving slowly across the screen, then vanished, but reappeared again shortly afterwards.
She said: "There was this thing hovering in the sky.
"It looked as if it was spinning. I thought I was seeing things.
"Every now and again it went away and then came back again.
"I thought 'crumbs nobody will believe me' so I took a few pictures on my phone."
In an even stranger twist, Denise then posted the images to her Facebook page with the object disappearing from view moments later.
Police confirmed that no strange sightings were reported to the police on Sunday morning after Denise saw the illuminous object over Elizabeth College in St Peter Port.
Denise said what she saw did look like a mystery object and is still unsure what it could be.
She said: "It could well be the glare from sun but even so it's a pretty spooky image."
The news comes just two months after a pilot flying towards Heathrow Airport revealed in a statement how his plane was on a collision course with a UFO.
The statement read: "The captain was fully expecting to experience some kind of impact with a conflicting aircraft."
And just weeks ago, photo slides of suspected UFOs were released in the mix of Edward Snowden's leaked security documents.

Witness said: Believe it or not, but I spotted this earlier today (3/21/14) in Boynton Beach, FL area. Went out to relax by the water, looked up, noticed it slowly moving, took out my phone and hit record.
Not my first sighting but the first I captured.
- No it was not a lens reflection. I saw it with my EYES before getting my phone out.
- I was not looking through my camera the whole time, only to make sure it was still in frame. At the end I was not looking through the camera when it quickly went behind the the cloud and darted off. Lucky I even caught it fly by at all.
- No it was not CGI being that I had been without a working computer for a week and had only been out once that day.

This article presents the story of the Dyatlov Ural Mountain Expedition of 1959 during which all 9 members of the expedition died under the most mysterious of circumstances, with of the 9 victims suffering harrowing injuries that could not be explained satisfactorily or attributable to natural causes. Based on the video linked below (“The Dyatlov Inceidend – Mountain of the Dead”, compiled by D. Romahlko), this article will detail the very compelling story of the tragic loss of the Dyatlov Expedition to Kholat Syaskhl, a region called “The Mountain of the Dead”.
Nine adult hikers were lost and all later found dead under extremely mysterious circumstances, including independent UFO eyewitnesses who saw lights maneuvering in the area around the time the hikers were lost.
This documentary is very unusual, being a tribute to the memory of the Dyatlov Ural Mountain expedition and, most importantly, based on official government documents, investigation findings, notes and photos from Yuri Gagarin's UFO files and his collection of photos, investigative reports, with diary notes and the last picture taken by a member of the party, along with information from the KGB's“Alien Races Book.”

The Role of Yuri Gagarin in the KGB Investigation of the Dyatlov UFO Incident.
Colonel Yuri Gagarin, born in Smolensk, was the 1st human in space. Smolensk is a northwestern Russian city, which lies not far from the Kholat Syalkyl region where the Dyatlev party was lost. While all of Russia was stunned by the case of the missing hikers, Gagarin took a specail interest in the events surrounding the mysterious and grusome deaths of the 9 hikers near Kholat Syalkyl and Mount Oroten, deep in the Ural Mountain.
Gagarin's interest in the mystery of the Dyatlov Expedition was so great that apparently a certain “HIigh Priority” was assigned, either officially or personally, for Gagarin actually took photographs of the Kholat Syakhl region as he overflew it in orbiting the Earth. The documents and photos revealed in Romahlko's video book were. released to the investigator/producer (Romajlko). by the family of Yuri Gagarin, and by the official KGB Criminal Prosecutor, Lev Ivanov (in 1991).
At the time that he made his disclosure, Lev Ivanov stated that he had hidden the UFO presence from the his fianl public report, and that he had removed evidence that clearly showed that UFOs had somehow been involved in the deaths and mutilations of the bodies. Ivanov admits that the word came down from the highest leels of govermn.
The photo of Mt. Ortoten taken by Yuri Gagari from orbit is contained in this documentary, which is actually a video book, entitled “The Dyatlov Incident – The Mountain of death,” and is meant to be read on screen. I found the story of Igor Dyatlov intriguing and the text, derived from the unclassified KGB report will leave no doubt as to the extraterrestrial cause of these UFO murders. As Robby the Robot used to say:

Take note also of the unique mountain tops, which might appear to someone with ”a sharp and far-ranging sense of attention to his surroundings; a well-developed imagination; quick reactions;… as well as excels in higher mathematics” might consider to be ice-walled enclaves of some intelligent design, with distinct structural features such as the fortress-like double circle that can be seen within the central “footprint.”

From Outer Space
Aside from the global propaganda value of the first human space flight, could it be that this photo taken by Yuri Gagarin during the very first human space flight (April 12th 1961), was actually the primary (military) reason for his space flight?
The significance of this photograph cannot be understated when we consider that Yuri Gagarin's flight in Vostok I lasted for only 1 single orbit of the Earth, enduring for only 1 hour 48 minutes. Therefore, this writer believes that the short duration of the flight elevates the importance of the photograph in the large scheme of the mission profile, among the many tasks, scientific and military, that were assigned to Yuri Gagarin during that short and historic space flight.
The reader will have to excuse my own “well-developed imagination,” but should I believe my eyes as they tell me that I see a giant “Sasquatch” footprint atop that mountain, on the plateaul-like summited directly North of the “Figure-8 Fortress”?
I ask the reader to consider this:-> If you were a space-faring extraterrestrial, can you think of a more significant group of landmarks to follow to a UFO Landing Zone?
1. The “Cross-in-a-Cirle” seen in relief to the Northwest;
2. The “Figure-8 Fortress” in the center dominating the region;
3. A Domed Tower to the East;
4. A mountainous plateau with a “Big Foot Print,” recognizable ONLY from outer space or extremely high altitude aircraft (for example, in those days, the U-2 or the SR-71 Blackbird or Corona Satellite).;
The area shown above where this tragedy occurred has since been named Dyatlov Pass (Перевал Дятлова) after the group's leader, Igor Dyatlov (Игорь Дятлов). Kholat Syakhl is still called “The Mountain of Death” by the local Mansi tribe.
As we explore the circumstances of their killings, the many mysteries surrounding the disappearance and grusome deaths of the Dyatlov Expedition deepen in Part II, as we study the forensic evidence released by the KGB investigator in charge in 1990.
We will consider the injuries they suffered while fleeing as the KGB report stated, from “an elemental force over which they had no control,” as well as the remarkable photos that were found in their cameras months later when their remains were recovered.

In late June of last year, an important UFO symposium took place in North Carolina. An international group of scientists, government officials, military personnel, and UFO researchers gathered to discuss unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs). DVDs of the lectures are now available.
Among the international speakers were representatives from several official government sponsored UFO investigation organizations. The most prominent is GEIPAN in France. This group investigates UFOs and is part of France’s National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), the equivalent to NASA here in the United States. The head of GEIPAN, Xavier Passot, was one of the speakers, and he reviewed their methodologies for investigation. He also shared their statistics and some of their best cases.
Another official UFO research group that was represented was Chile’s Committee for the Study of Anomalous Aerial Phenomena (CEFAA). This organization is a branch of the General Administration of Civil Aeronautics, which is similar to our FAA. Jose Lay, CEFAA’s director of international affairs, spoke on how their organization works, and also shared information on some of their best cases.

Another international presenter was retired Major General Wilfried De Brouwer of the Belgian Air Force. He was not representing an official UFO organization. However, he was presenting the details of an official UFO investigation. He presided over the official investigation of 2000 reports of triangular shaped UFOs over Belgium from 1989 to 1991. He says the witnesses included highly credible individuals including pilots and police officials.

Another unique aspect of the conference was the participation of scientists and other members of academia. Alexander Wendt, professor of international security, spoke on the UFO taboo. Similarly, emeritus professor of sociology Ron Westrum spoke on how society deals with controversial discoveries. Astronomer and author Jeffrey Bennett presented on the scientific search for extraterrestrial life, and Dr. Richard Haines presented UFO investigations of reports from pilots.

There were a number of other great researchers who can often be found presenting at UFO conferences, but these international and academic presentations are unique and rare.
The event was financed and organized by Kent Senter, who has researched the UFO phenomena for over 25 years. He was one of the founding members of the North Carolina chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). Senter is battling an incurable cancer, and wanted to put together a credible conference as part of his “bucket list.” Early on his cancer was misdiagnosed, and with some of the money he was awarded in a settlement, he was able to bring in the best people from all over the world to accomplish his goal of elevating the credibility of UFO research.

White dwarfs may hold the key to finding alien life
At the end of one part of a star’s life, if it’s not massive enough to become a neutron star or black hole – which is the vast majority of stars – it will shed mass and eventually become a very dense type of star known as a white dwarf.
White dwarves are no longer capable of the nuclear fusion that sustains our Sun and most other stars. However, its residual thermal energy is enough to sustain heat for billions of years as it slowly dissipates.
Even white dwarves that are close in age to that of the universe still retain their heat.
It’s around these slowly dying stars that astronomers now think may show the first signs of life. At least, given the limits of our current technology. That’s the conclusion of researchers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.
“In the quest forextraterrestrial biological signatures, the first stars we study should be white dwarfs,” said theorist Avi Loeb in a CfA press release.
So far, no planets have been found in the “habitable zone” of a white dwarf star – an orbit where liquid water could exist on the surface of the planet. However, the researchers believe that a survey of 500 or so dwarf stars could discover such a planet.
Once such a planet is discovered, the next step belongs to the James Webb Space Telescope, which will launch in 2018. The JWST will have equipment on it capable of determining the chemistry of the atmospheres of alien worlds based on the how the light of its star changes as it passes through.
The benefit of studying white dwarfs, though, is that they give off less light than other types of stars.
As a result, the astronomers demonstrated in their research that the JWST should be able to detect the presence of water vapor and oxygen in an atmosphere in just a few hours of observation.
For planets around other types of stars, such as red dwarfs, observation might take hundreds of hours.
“Although the closest habitable planet might orbit a red dwarf star, the closest one we can easily prove to be life-bearing might orbit a white dwarf,” said Loeb.
A doodle of a UFO made by John Lennon in 1974 was auctioned off last week and it went for nearly 10 times more than expected. The UFO drawing by Lennon fits the description of a UFO he says he saw in New York with his then girlfriend May Pang that same year.
Lennon’s UFO sighting is legendary in UFO lore. It took place in New York, during his self described “Lost Weekend,” which was actually not a weekend at all. This was the period from the summer of 1973 to early 1975, which he spent with Pang and separated from his wife Yoko Ono.

During that time Lennon completed several albums, including “Walls and Bridges.” It is a on an acetate album sleeve for “Walls and Bridges” that Lennon doodled, among other things, a UFO with the letters “UFOer” written on it. The sleeve, along with more of Lennon’s original artwork is on display this month. The sleeve was auctioned this past Friday, March 21. It was expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,500 (around $1600 to $2500), but in the end it went for £10,000 (currently $16,530).
In the liner notes to “Walls and Bridges,” if one looks closely, they will find a cryptic little note that reads: “On the 23rd Aug. 1974 at 9 o’clock I saw a U.F.O. J.L.”

This note is a reference to Lennon’s UFO sighting. He says that the sighting took place at his apartment on 52nd street in New York City. He says it was a clear summer night when he spotted the object hovering only 100 yards away. He said in a radio interview, “I could have hit it with a brick if I would have thrown a stone at it.”

He says the object was round, and “around the bottom was ordinary looking electric light bulbs blinking on and off alternatively like on a billboard or something. On the top of it was a red light. The thing I noticed was that there was no noise, and I could hear the freeway down below – all of the cars going.”
He says he knew it wasn’t a helicopter because it made no noise. His next thought was that it was perhaps a balloon, but he felt it was too close to the rooftops and “maneuvered too well” to be a balloon. He said the object was there for 5 to 20 minutes before it moved away along the east river.
Pang was also present during the sighting and wrote about it in her book Loving John. She says, “I had just stepped out of the shower one Friday night toward the end of August when I heard John shout. ‘Fung Yee, come here!’”
She says he sounded panicked, so she ran outside to find out what was going on. She says Lennon pointed to the sky and said, “Look up there. Tell me what you see.”
She was “astonished” to see “a saucer shaped object surrounded by blinking white lights gliding through the sky.”
She said she was not really into the topic of UFOs, but that Lennon was. He even subscribed to a British UFO journal called the Flying Saucer Review. However, she was convinced that what she was looking at was a UFO.
She then began laughing. Confused, Lennon asked what she was laughing about. Pang says she laughed because they were both naked. She told him, “Suppose it’s looking at us. Maybe they think that everyone who lives on the East Side wanders around naked on their balconies on Friday evenings. We look like Adam and Eve.”

Pang says they then went inside to see if they could see the UFO better on their telescope.
Although Pang had been skeptical of UFOs, she said after the sighting, “Now I’ve seen it I do believe it.”
Even though Lennon, according to Pang’s account, was excited during the sighting, he says in the 1984 song Nobody Told Me, “There’s UFOs over New York and I ain’t too surprised.”
Lennon may not have found UFOs over New York very surprising, but the auctioneers must have been surprised at the price his UFO doodle fetched. Being a John Lennon fan, and an obvious UFO enthusiast, I personally find the doodle and the story of his sighting to be priceless.
On July 17, 1957 over the Gulf Coast area of the United States, an USAF RB-47, equipped with electronic countermeasures (ECM) gear and manned by six officers, was followed by an unidentified object for a distance of well over 700 mi. and for a time period of 1.5 hr., as it flew from Mississippi, through Louisiana and Texas and into Oklahoma. The object was, at various times, seen visually by the cockpit crew as an intensely luminous light, followed by ground-radar and detected on ECM monitoring gear aboard the RB-47:
The Report
On board an RB-47H aircraft equipped with sophisticated electronic countermeasures equipment, over the Gulf of Mexico.
The crew consisted of:
Lewis D. Chase, pilot, Spokane, WA James H. McCoid, copilot, Offutt AFB Thomas H. Hanley, navigator, Vandenberg AFB John J. Provenzano, No. 1 monitor, Wichita, KS Frank B. McClure, No. 2 monitor, Offutt AFB Walter A. Tuchscherer, No. 3 monitor, Topeka, KS
These six men were on a training/test exercise in an RB-47H electronic countermeasures reconnaissance aircraft. The RB-47, while originally developed as a bomber, was also used extensively as a reconnaissance aircraft. One was shot down by the Soviet Union while on such a mission in 1960.
This particular mission began at Forbes AFB in Topeka, Kansas as an exercise including gunnery exercises over the Texas-Gulf area, navigation exercises over the open Gulf, and Electronic CounterMeasures exercises on the return trip across the south-central U.S.
The men participating were soon to depart for Germany and duty there. It should be noted that the ECM equipment was not radar. It did not emit a signal and then pick up reflected echoes off of an object. Rather, it detected electromagnetic signals that were actually emitted by an object itself. The purpose of this was to detect and locate enemy radar installations. On this aircraft, the #2 monitor consisted of a direction finder with antenna on the lower rear of the aircraft, and the #1 monitor consisted of a direction finder with antennas on each wingtip of the aircraft. The #3 monitor was not involved in the events of July 17, because its range did not include the frequencies involved. The first contact with the unknown object was before 4:00 AM CST. The first two parts of the mission had been completed, and the aircraft was just leaving the airspace over the Gulf of Mexico near Gulfport, Mississippi, when Frank McClure, on the #2 ECM monitor, detected an airborne signal to the right rear of the aircraft, out over the Gulf of Mexico. The signal was of a type usually confined to ground-based radar installations. It was at 2800 megacycles, a common frequency for S-band search radar. McClure at first thought that his scope must be 180° out of alignment and that he must be picking up a ground-based radar station in Louisiana, which would actually be to the left front of the aircraft. As he watched, the signal moved up the scope, as it would if the scope was 180° out of alignment. However, he was amazed to see that, after it had moved up the scope on the right-hand side of the aircraft, it then crossed the path of the RB-47 and proceeded to move down the scope on the left-hand side. In other words, whatever was emitting the signal flew a ring around the RB-47, which was flying at approximately 500 mph. Even if the scope was 180° out of alignment, the signal source still moved completely around the aircraft, which no ground radar could do. McClure said and did nothing at this time, not mentioning the signal to the other crew members. The signal faded as they flew north.
The RB-47 made a scheduled turn to the west over Jackson, Mississippi and the crew was preparing to begin a series of simulated ECM operations against Air Force ground radar units, when suddenly the pilot, Lewis Chase, saw a light coming in from the left, at approximately the same altitude as the RB-47. At first he thought it was another plane, but it was only a single white light, closing fast. He gave the command to prepare for evasive maneuvers, but the light flashed across from left to right so fast that no such action could have been taken. It then blinked out at a point to the right front of the aircraft. Both Chase and Copilot James McCoid observed this. At this point, approximately 4:10 AM CST, they were approximately over Winnsboro, Louisiana.
Chase told the other crewmembers what he had seen, and McClure now told him about his earlier signal reading. At 4:30 AM, McClure set his scope to detect signals near 3000 mcs again, and he detected a strong signal at the same location in relation to the RB-47 that Chase had last seen the light. He and Provenzano checked the alignment of the #2 monitor by tuning in on known ground radar installations and found it to be in perfect working order. At 4:30 AM, Provenzano tuned his own monitor, #1, to 3000 mcs, and found that his equipment detected a signal at the same location. What’s more, he and McClure found that the signal was staying in the same position, keeping pace with the RB-47, which was still flying at 500 mph. This meant that it was not a signal from a ground-based radar.
The Unknown Companion
By this time they had reached the Duncanville, Texas area. At 4:39, Chase spotted a huge light to the right front of the RB-47 an about 5,000 feet below the aircraft’s 34,500 feet altitude. The weather was perfectly clear. At 4:40, McClure reported two signals, at 40° and 70°. Chase and McCoid reported seeing red lights at those locations. Chase contacted radar Station Utah at Duncanville, Texas and requested permission to abandon his flight plan and pursue the lights, which he received. At 4:48 AM, radar station Utah requested the position of the signals that McClure was receiving, and they immediately confirmed that their radar had detected the objects at the same location. As the RB-47 attempted to pursue, the object appeared to stop suddenly. Chase could see that they were gaining on it, and they over shot it.
At 4:52 it blinked out, and simultaneously vanished from McClure’s scope and the ground radar! Chase put the aircraft into a port turn, and the object suddenly blinked on again, simultaneously reappearing on McClure’s scope and the ground radar at 4:52! They began to close to within 5 miles of the object, when it suddenly dropped to 15,000 feet and then blinked out again, once again vanishing from the scopes and ground radar. At 4:55, Chase radioed Utah radar station that they had to break of pursuit and continue with their scheduled flight plan due to low fuel. At 4:57 McClure picked up the signal again, and at 4:58 Chase made visual contact again. As they headed into Oklahoma, McClure continued to receive a signal, now from the rear of the aircraft, until it finally faded as they neared Oklahoma City. The Director of Intelligence, 55th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, stated in his report that he had: …no doubt the electronic D/F’s coincided exactly with visual observations by aircraft cmdr numerous times, thus indicating positively the object being the signal source.
What can be detected on ECM direction finding devices, can be seen visually, and can be detected on ordinary ground-based radar all at the same time? What can be detected by all the sensors and can also fly rings around a jet travelling at 500 mph?
Project Bluebook said that the sightings in Dallas – Fort Worth area were an ordinary jet airliner. They couldn’t explain the abrupt, simultaneous disappearance and reappearance of the object from radar screens, ECM scopes, and visual detection. They also couldn’t explain the events that occurred over Mississippi and Louisiana. It’s odd that the Utah radar station couldn’t tell an airliner from an unknown.
The Condon Committee toyed with several explanations, but found none to be satisfactory, finally classifying this case as unknown.
The crew of a B-47 aircraft described an encounter with a large ball of light which was also displayed for a sustained time for both airborne radar monitoring receivers and on ground radar units. The encounter had occurred ten years prior to this study. Project Blue Book had no record of it. Attempts to locate any records of the event, in an effort to learn the identity of the encountered phenomenon, failed to produce any information. The phenomenon remains unidentified.
Background:
At a project-sponsored conference for air base UFO officers, held in Boulder in June 1967, one of the officers revealed that he personally had experienced a puzzling UFO encounter some ten years previously. According to the officer, a Major at the time of the encounter, he was piloting a B-47 on a gunnery and electronic counter-measures training mission from an AFB. The mission had taken the crew over the gulf of Mexico, and back over South Central United States where they encountered a glowing source of both visual and 2,800 mHz. electromagnetic radiation of startling intensity, which, during part of the encounter, held a constant position relative to the B-47 for an extended period. Ground flight control radar also received a return from the “object,” and reported its range to the B-47 crew, at a position in agreement with radar and visual observations from the aircraft.
According to the officer, upon return to the AFB electronic counter-measures, graphic data, and radar scope pictures which had been taken during the flight were removed from the plane by Intelligence personnel. He recalled that an Intelligence questionnaire regarding the experience had later been completed by the B-47 crew; however, the “security lid” shut off further information regarding the encounter. The crew learned nothing more regarding the incident, and the pilot occasionally had wondered about the identity of the phenomena encountered ever since his experience.
Investigation:
When no report of this incident was found in Blue Book or Air Defense Command records, this project undertook to obtain leads to the location of data recorded during the event through detailed interview of all available members of the B-47 crew. Of the six crew members, the three most closely involved in the encounter were the pilot, co-pilot, and the officer who had been in charge of the most involved radar-monitoring unit.
Details of the encounter, as best they could be recalled, were obtained by interview with the pilot and, later, with the two other officers at another air base. A11 remained deeply impressed by the experience, and were surprised that a report of it was not part of Blue Book files. Their descriptions of the experience were generally consistent, although the pilot did not mention that the navigator also had received a radar return from the object in question, as was recalled by the other officers. (The navigator, on duty in Vietnam, was not available for interview). The two other crew members, each of whom had operated a radar monitoring unit in the B-47 during the UFO event, were involved to a lesser extent in the incident, and were not located for interview.
The crew’s description of the experience follows:
Time: Early morning, Fall 1957. Place: Over South Central United States Plane’s altitude: About 30,000 ft. during the first part of the encounter. Nature of Mission: (Pilot): Combined navigation, gunnery, and electronic counter-measure training mission. (Other Crew): Check-out of plane and equipment, including electronic counter-measures equipment, prior to European assignment. Weather: Witnesses recalled seeing, from 30,000 ft. altitude, lights of cities and burn-off flames at gas and oil refineries below. They have no recollection of other than clear weather.
Radar monitoring unit number two, in the back end of the B-47, picked up a strong signal, at a frequency of about 2,800 mHz., which moved up-scope while the plane was in straight flight. (A signal from a ground station necessarily moves down-scope under these conditions, because of forward motion of the airplane). This was noted, but not reported immediately to the rest of the crew. The officer operating this unit suspected equipment malfunction, and switched to a different monitoring frequency range. The pilot saw a white light ahead and warned the crew to be prepared for a sudden maneuver. Before any evasive action could be taken, the light crossed in front of the plane, moving to the right, at a velocity far higher than airplane speeds. The light was seen by pilot and co-pilot, and appeared to the pilot to be a glowing body as big as a barn. The light disappeared visually, but number two monitor was returned to the frequency at which the signal was noted a few moments earlier and again showed a target, now holding at the “two-o’clock” position. The pilot varied the plane’s speed, but the radar source stayed at two o’clock. The pilot then requested and received permission to switch to ground interceptor control radar and check out the unidentified companion. Ground Control in the area informed the pilot that both his plane and the other target showed on their radar, the other target holding a range of ten miles from him.
After the UFO had held the two o’clock position and ten-mile range through various test changes in aircraft speed, the number two monitoring officer informed the pilot that the target was starting to move up-scope. It moved to a position dead ahead of the plane, holding a ten-mile range, and again became visible to the eye as a huge, steady, red glow. The pilot went to maximum speed. The target appeared to stop, and as the plane got close to it and flew over it, the target disappeared from visual observation, from monitor number two, and from ground radar. (The operator of monitor number two also recalled the B-47 navigator’s having this target on his radar, and the target’s disappearing from his radar scope at the same time). The pilot began to turn back. About half way around the turn, the target reappeared on both the monitor and ground radar scopes and visually at an estimated altitude of 15,000 ft. The pilot received permission from Ground Control to change altitude, and dove the plane at the target, which appeared stationary. As the plane approached to an estimated distance of five miles the target vanished again from both visual observation and radar. Limited fuel caused the pilot to abandon the chase at this point and head for his base. As the pilot leveled off at 20,000 ft. a target again appeared on number two monitor, this time behind the B-47. The officer operating the number two monitoring unit, however, believes that he may have been picking up the ground radar signal at this point. The signal faded out as the B-47 continued flight.
The co-pilot and number two monitoring officer were most impressed by the sudden disappearance of the target and its reappearance at a new location. As they recalled the event, the target could be tracked part of the time on the radar monitoring screen, as described above, but, at least once, disappeared from the right side of the plane, appeared on their left, then suddenly on their right again, with no “trail” on the radar scope to indicate movement of the target between successive positions.
The monitoring officer recalled that the navigator, who reported receiving his own transmitted radar signals reflected from the target, not only had a target on his screen, but reported target bearings which coincided exactly with the bearings to the source on the monitoring scope. He also indicated that the officer Operating the number one radar monitoring unit, which was of a different type, having a fixed APD-4 antenna instead of a spinning antenna as used with the number two unit, and covering all radar ranges, also observed the same display he observed on unit two. The sixth crew member, operating number three radar monitor, which covered a lower frequency range, was searching for something to tie in with the signals being observed on the other scopes, but found nothing.
The following questions are raised by this information:
1. Could the number two monitoring unit have received either direct or reflected ground radar signals which had no relation to the visual sighting?
The fact that the frequency received on number two, about 2,800 mHz., was one of the frequencies emitted from ground radar stations (CPS6B type antennas) at an airport and other airports near by, makes one suspect this possibility. The number two monitoring officer felt that after the B-47 arrived over South Central U. S., signals from GCA sets were received, and this confused the question of whether an unidentified source which emitted or reflected this wave length was present. On original approach to the area, however, a direct ground signal could not have moved up-scope. Up-scope movement could not have been due to broken rotor leads or other equipment malfunction, for all other ground signals observed that night moved down-scope. A reflected signal would require a moving reflector in the region serving as apparent source, the movement being coordinated with the motion of the aircraft, particularly during periods when the UFO held constant position relative to the moving aircraft. Since the monitor scans 360o, if a reflected beam were displayed on the scope, the direct radar beam also would be displayed, unless the transmitter were below the horizon. As the event was recalled by the witnesses, only one signal was present during initial observations. If the UFO actually reflected radar signals transmitted from the B-47, and appeared in the same position on the navigator’s scope as one, the number two monitoring scope, reflection of 2,800 mHz. ground signals from these same positions seems extremely unlikely.
2. Could the visual observations have been misinterpreted airplane lights, airplane afterburners, or meteors?
The persistence of the phenomenon rules out meteors. Observed speeds, plus instant re-position and hovering capabilities are not consistent with the aircraft hypothesis.
3. Were the visual observations necessarily of the same phenomenon as the radar observations?
Coincidence of disappearances, appearances, and indicated positions suggest a common cause.
3. If the reported observations are factual and accurate, what capabilities and properties were possessed by the UFO?
a. Rapid motion, hovering, and instant relocation.
b. Emission of electromagnetic radiation in the visible region and possibly in the 2,800 mHz. region.
c. Reflection of radar waves of various frequencies. (From airborne radar units as well as 2,800 mHz. ground units). Failure to transmit at the frequency of the number three radar monitor.
d. Ability to hold a constant position relative to an aircraft.
4. Could the observed phenomenon be explained as a plasma?
Ten scientists who specialize in plasma research, at our October 1967 plasma conference regarded an explanation of this experience in terms of known properties of a plasma as not tenable.
Further investigation of this case centered around efforts to trace reports of this event submitted by the crew after the B-47 returned to the AFB. Recollections of the nature and manner of submission of such reports or records were in sharp divergence. As the pilot recalled the incident, the landing plane was met by their Wing Intelligence personnel, who took all filmed and wire-recorded data from the “back-end” crew. The crew was never extensively questioned about the incident. Days or weeks later, however, the crew did receive from Air Defense Command, a lengthy questionnaire which they completed including sketches of what they had seen and narrative descriptions of the event. The questionnaire also had a section to be completed by the ground radar (GCI) personnel. The pilot could not recall where or exactly when the completed questionnaire had been sent.
In contrast with this recollection, the co-pilot and number two monitoring officer said that no data whatsoever had been recorded during the flight. The #1 monitoring unit was equipped for movie filming of its display, and #2 was equipped for wire recording of data. Since the flight had been merely for the purpose of checking equipment, however, neither film nor recording wire was taken aboard. Both these officers recalled intensive interrogation by their Intelligence personnel immediately after their return to the AFB. They did not recall writing anything about the event that day or later. According to their account, the B-47 crew left for England the following day, and heard nothing more of the incident.
Since it appeared that the filmed and recorded data we were seeking had never existed, we renewed the effort to locate any special intelligence reports of the incident that might have failed to reach Project Blue Book. A report form of the type described by the pilot could not be identified or located. The Public Information Officer at ADC Headquarters checked intelligence files and operations records, but found no record of this incident. The Deputy Commander for Operations of the particular SAC Air Wing in which the B-47 crew served in 1957 informed us that a thorough review of the Wing history failed to disclose any reference to an UFO incident in Fall 1957.
Conclusion:
If a report of this incident, written either by the B-47 crew or by Wing Intelligence personnel, was submitted in 1957, it apparently is no longer in existence. Moving pictures of radar scope displays and other data said to have been recorded during the incident apparently never existed. Evaluation of the experience must, therefore, rest entirely on the recollection of crew members ten years after the event. These descriptions are not adequate to allow identification of the phenomenon encountered (cf. Section III Chapters 2 & 6, and Appendix Q). Report: Roy Craig, in the Condon Report, 1968
The B-47 “Stratojet” was the first all-jet operational bomber in the Air Force and was the backbone of the Strategic Air Command bomber fleet in the 1950s. It was a medium range bomber that could be refueled in flight manufactured by Boeing Aircraft Company (primary), Douglas and Lockheed. It had 6 General Electric J-47-GE-25 turbojet engines, a maximum speed of 600 miles per hour, and a range of 4000 miles.
The RB-47E was the photomapping, weather and electronic reconnaissance version of the B-47 and was also one of its best versions; it first flew July 1953. It was designed to check weather along projected bombing routes, photograph enemy installations and monitor defensive radar systems during the period 1954 to 1964. It was used in missions above North Korea, China, and also over the Soviet Union for the most sensitive reconnaissance missions of the Cold War.
