Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

Verkenner Philae landt op 12 november op komeet 67P - HLN.be
Europa probeert op 12 november een verkenner op het oppervlak van een komeet te zetten. Dat heeft de Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie ESA aangekondigd. Nog nooit is een verkenner geland op een komeet.
De sonde Rosetta met de verkenner Philae vliegt nu nog rond de komeet 67P/Tsjoerjoemov-Gerasimenko. Die ziet eruit als een badeendje. De plek van de landing was vorige week al bekendgemaakt. De verkenner moet naar de 'kop' van de komeet gaan. Daar is het redelijk vlak. Ook valt er genoeg zonlicht om de accu op te laden.
Als de landing daar toch niet door kan gaan, heeft de ESA een alternatief achter de hand. Dat is een plek op het 'lichaam' van de badeend. Ook daar zou de Philae op 12 november moeten landen.
Ontstaan zonnestelsel Het is de bedoeling dat de Rosetta op 12 november om 9.35 uur Belgische tijd de Philae loslaat. Dan zakt de verkenner langzaam naar het oppervlak. Na ongeveer 7 uur vliegen is de landing. Bijna een half uur later, iets na 17.00 uur, moet het signaal op aarde aankomen dat alles is geslaagd. Bij de alternatieve plek zou dat een paar uur later gebeuren.
De verkenner Philae moet het komende jaar onder meer gaan boren in het oppervlak van 67P, om vast te stellen waaruit de komeet bestaat. Dat kan wetenschappers een beter beeld geven van het ontstaan van ons zonnestelsel en daarmee van de aarde. De komeet 67P is namelijk ontstaan uit dezelfde wolk van gas en stof waaruit ook de aarde en de andere planeten zijn samengeklonterd. De aarde is in de miljarden jaren erna flink veranderd, de komeet niet of nauwelijks.
6,5 miljard kilometer; 1,3 miljard euro De Rosetta werd in maart 2004 gelanceerd en heeft inmiddels ongeveer 6,5 miljard kilometer op de teller staan. De route voerde drie keer langs de aarde en één keer langs Mars. De Rosetta had de zwaartekracht van de twee planeten nodig om genoeg snelheid te maken voor de oversteek naar de komeet.
De missie is een prestigeproject van Europa en kost ruim 1,3 miljard euro. De Nederlander Fred Jansen leidt het project.

8.8 billion habitable Earth-size planets exist in Milky Way alone

Astronomers using NASA data calculate that in our galaxy alone there are at least 8.8 billion Earth-sized planets that are not too hot or not too cold and circle stars that are just like our sun, according to a study published Monday.
WASHINGTON — Space is vast, but it may not be so lonely after all: A study finds the Milky Way is teeming with billions of planets that are about the size of Earth, orbit stars just like our sun, and exist in the Goldilocks zone — not too hot and not too cold for life.
Astronomers using NASA data have calculated for the first time that in our galaxy alone, there are at least 8.8 billion stars with Earth-size planets in the habitable temperature zone.
The study was published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
For perspective, that's more Earth-like planets than there are people on Earth.
As for what it says about the odds that there is life somewhere out there, it means "just in our Milky Way galaxy alone, that's 8.8 billion throws of the biological dice," said study co-author Geoff Marcy, a longtime planet hunter from the University of California at Berkeley.
The next step, scientists say, is to look for atmospheres on these planets with powerful space telescopes that have yet to be launched. That would yield further clues to whether any of these planets do, in fact, harbor life.
The findings also raise a blaring question, Marcy said: If we aren't alone, why is "there a deafening silence in our Milky Way galaxy from advanced civilizations?"
In the Milky Way, about 1 in 5 stars that are like our sun in size, color and age have planets that are roughly Earth's size and are in the habitable zone where life-crucial water can be liquid, according to intricate calculations based on four years of observations from NASA's now-crippled Kepler telescope.
If people on Earth could only travel in deep space, "you'd probably see a lot of traffic jams," Bill Borucki, NASA's chief Kepler scientist, joked Monday.
The Kepler telescope peered at 42,000 stars, examining just a tiny slice of our galaxy to see how many planets like Earth are out there. Scientists then extrapolated that figure to the rest of the galaxy, which has hundreds of billions of stars.
For the first time, scientists calculated — not estimated — what percent of stars that are just like our sun have planets similar to Earth: 22 percent, with a margin of error of plus or minus 8 percentage points.
Kepler scientist Natalie Batalha said there is still more data to pore over before this can be considered a final figure.
There are about 200 billion stars in our galaxy, with 40 billion of them like our sun, Marcy said. One of his co-authors put the number of sun-like stars closer to 50 billion, meaning there would be at least 11 billion planets like ours.
Based on the 1-in-5 estimate, the closest Earth-size planet that is in the habitable temperature zone and circles a sun-like star is probably within 70 trillion miles of Earth, Marcy said.
And the 8.8 billion Earth-size planets figure is only a start. That's because scientists were looking only at sun-like stars, which are not the most common stars.
An earlier study found that 15 percent of the more common red dwarf stars have Earth-size planets that are close-in enough to be in the not-too-hot, not-too-cold Goldilocks Zone.
Put those together and that's probably 40 billion right-size, right-place planets, Marcy said.
And that's just our galaxy. There are billions of other galaxies.
Scientists at a Kepler science conference Monday said they have found 833 new candidate planets with the space telescope, bringing the total of planets they've spotted to 3,538, but most aren't candidates for life.
Kepler has identified only 10 planets that are about Earth's size circling sun-like stars and are in the habitable zone, including one called Kepler 69-c.
Because there are probably hundreds of planets missed for every one found, the study did intricate extrapolations to come up with the 22 percent figure — a calculation that outside scientists say is fair.
"Everything they've done looks legitimate," said MIT astronomer Sara Seager.
As a level headed, well-educated man trained in the technical sciences, the last thing Edward ever expected to witness was a Glowing Blue Sphere UFO.
Mid-September 1982: location Westchester County in the town of Mount Kisco, NY, population eleven thousand. Edward was in his second floor bedroom, glancing out of his window he noticed red glow in the sky.
“I thought someone had set off a firework and I looked more intently.”
He watched as the red glow moved from right to left in his southward field of view of the sky. The object seemed very strange to him, only then did he realize that the craft had no wings.
Edward tells us, “The front part of the craft was a glowing blue sphere, it was light blue. Attached to the sphere at the rear was a brightly glowing/pulsating orange/red cylinder the length of which was about twice the diameter of the blue sphere. The diameter of the cylinder was about one quarter of the diameter of the sphere and projected straight back parallel to the direction of flight for about two or three sphere diameters. I thought to myself that the cylinder was the power source driving the sphere forward. The craft made no noise that he could hear.”
As a scientifically trained person he struggled to explain the sighting in common terms.
“Without any reference it is always difficult to tell whether an object traveling in space is far or near, especially if the surfaces are smooth.”
Edward estimates that the Glowing Blue Sphere was about the size of a Boeing 747 or larger and flying at 2000ft in altitude at about 500 mph. He says that it was only in view for about 15 seconds.
“Of course, it could have been larger and further away.”
When Edward lost sight of the craft he rushed downstairs and exclaimed to his wife Audrey that he had seen a UFO.
“She looked at him very skeptically.”
The couple had been awaiting the impending birth of their son. His wife Audrey just wrote the whole thing off as her husband’s birthing nerves.
However, the next day Edward that noted in the New York Times, there was a small article that mentioned an unidentified craft that had been sighted by several people on Long Island. It had been tracked on radar as coming over the Canadian border flying south until it reached Atlanta and then it turned abruptly east and headed out into the Atlantic.
A young man, Ronnie Austin and his girlfriend, Phyllis Bruce (both 18) had driven to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to attend a drive-in movie, “The Great Escape”. At around 11:30 PM they departed on Route 15 heading east for home, which was Wayne City. Phyllis had gotten angry with him, and as they drove along past the airport, Ronnie leaned over to speak to her. As he did this, he glanced out of the window to the south and saw a big white object moving along at treetop level, about 20-degrees above the horizon to the southwest. He described it as fuzzy and about the size of a washtub. Both witnesses watched, casually talking about the light for several minutes.
Then they discovered that the light seemed to be keeping pace with them. Ronnie reported that when he speeded the car up, the object seemed to speed up. Also, when he decelerated, the object seemed to slow down, too. This continued, as indicated by the map included in this report. At first the light was on the south side of the car; then it crossed over in front to the north side. The transition took place when they were about 6 miles west of the Orchardville Road intersection. The object had been on their right (south) and keeping up with them, when all at once the object headed for the car. It appeared to get within a few hundred feet and then it suddenly gained altitude and stopped for several seconds over an electronic relay tower. Then the light shot across the road to the north side to the left of the car. It maintained this position for a while about 500 feet distant. They then turned north on the gravel road leading to Phyllis’ home, which was approximately 1.5 miles away. The object was now on their right. Upon arrival, Phyllis’ sister Forestine came outside to observe the thing, which was now in the southeast. The object appeared to move closer, so went inside, turned out the lights and watched through a window. After 15 minutes had passed, Ronnie decided he had better go home. He made a run for the car.
As soon as he pulled away from the Bruce home, the object began to follow. In our interview with the boy’s father (Orville) on August 12, he told us that this is what scared Ronnie, the thought that the UFO was waiting for him to be alone before it took off after him. He had to head south and the object was on his left now. When he turned east onto another gravel road, the object suddenly shot diagonally ahead of him over a barn about a mile away, just beyond the T-road. The object now changed from a brilliant white to a duller or dimmer light with an orange tinge. Ronnie said he “really poured the coal” to the car and must have been doing 120 mph when he topped the hill on the gravel road. Then, he reported, the object flared bright orange and came straight toward him at high speed. It hovered over the car, within 100′. Just before it hovered it had swerved upward and Ronnie judged its size as that of an automobile. At the point right over the car his radio (tuned to WLS) went crazy with static, which was described as a loud whining sound..
At that time he noticed a “cooling effect”. The object made another pass at the car, this time west to east, and at this point where the object was again overhead, the engine of the car started missing. The object proceeded back to its position over the barn, hovered, changed to a duller orange. This small road running east to west is only about a mile long and the events that took place according to the witness indicates an increase in activity by the object, which really had the boy scared by now. Ronnie now turned north at the intersection (extension of road not shown) and headed for home which was over 3 miles away. The object followed him again. As he headed west down the lane leading to his home, the object cut across the road behind him to the left. He spun his car around in the driveway in front of the house, got out of the car and ran inside. The object was now above another farmhouse in the east about 300 yards away. When Ronnie woke his parents, they thought he had gone crazy. He told them that “it” had chased him home. He could hardly talk; every third or fourth word would trail off. Mr. Austin thought that somebody had chased the boy and was trying to hurt him, so he grabbed the shotgun as he went out the door. Ronnie told him that it wouldn’t do any good. Orville Austin told us that when he saw the object hovering over the field, he understood what the boy was trying to say. He put the gun down. The object started to move closer again so they went into the kitchen and turned out the lights, watching through the windows. Mr. Austin felt that the object was attracted by the lights. Then Ronnie told him to call the police. Orville tried but the phone was dead. Later, the phone was operating and he called Fairfield Police. He said that they thought he was joking. He wanted them to contact Scott Air Force Base which was 80 miles to the northwest. It was about l2:25 A.M. now.
At this time Ronnie’s parents saw that he needed medical aid. They called Dr. Konarski of Fairfield and he told them what to give him. When the police arrived, they saw the “object”, too. Several friends and neighbors watched this “object” and at one time Ronnie got scared and ran back into the house. Several buddies of Ronnie’s watched an object until 4:00 in the morning. Around the time of the video, people had been reporting that something was killing goats, dogs and other farm animals.
Pablo Ortes noticed that his dogs were acting weird by barking hysterically.
So he and another person grabbed a camera and went out to investigate.
That’s when the creature that’s been attacking livestock finally showed itself.
The creature came out from some bushes and Pablo quickly shot it with his rifle.
Upon further inspection, they discovered that the creature was an alien creature that is unlike anything we’ve ever seen. Where did it come from, and are there more of these? So many underground caverns in Columbia – a breeding ground for strangeness.
Scott Waring, author of UFO Sightings Daily, says, ”this was emailed into me, about these long underwater structures, but nearby it I found 16 round objects in two groups of eight that look like disks at the bottom of the ocean…in flight formation. Very unique and may be linked to the 1940s Battle of Los Angeles UFOs seen over the city. They are at the edge of Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey.”

Waring says, “The long structures are all pointing to each other and in the center between them all the area is pixalated and obscured…thus evidence that something is being hidden from the publics view. Two more unusually shaped rock formations have been discovered on the surface of the Red Planet.
Thanks to the plethora of high quality images returned by NASA's rovers, Mars has become a prime example of how the brain can be tricked in to interpreting an otherwise abstract pattern as something of significance - a phenomenon known as pareidolia.
The first of the two most recent finds is a rock formation that looks a bit like a set of traffic lights. It consists of a tall stone with several small stones spaced vertically up the side of it.
"I saw this one and I thought 'hang on, that looks a bit strange,'" said space video journalist Joe Smith who first came across the object. "I posted it on the internet and people said they thought it looked like a set of traffic lights too - although some people did say it looked like a totem pole."
The second object, a perfectly spherical rock, was found a few days earlier by NASA themselves. Scientists explained that the ball was likely to have been formed by repeated compacting and hardening - a process known as concretion.

In 1975 astronomers Dr Kip Thorne and Dr Anna Żytkow predicted the existence of a star within a star, dubbed a Thorne-Żytkow object.
They suggested one would form when a neutron star collided with a supergiant, being swallowed inside its huge companion.
And now almost 40 years later the evidence for such an object has been found, providing astronomers with a fascinating and bizarre new space object to study.
Astronomers have found a strange double star using a telescope in Chile. The so-called Thorne-Żytkow object consists of a neutron star that was swallowed by a much larger red supergiant. This can occur if two stars are orbiting each other, as shown in this illustration, and one is pushed into the other
Thorne-Żytkow objects (TŻOs) are hybrids of red supergiant and neutron stars that, from the outside, resemble regular red supergiants such as Betelgeuse in Orion.
Their chemical signatures are different from such stars, however, due to the unique activity taking place inside.
And amazingly, while regular stars are powered by nuclear fusion in their cores, TŻOs are actually powered by the absorbed neutron star.
The discovery of one of these incredible objects was announced earlier this year, reports Amy Teitel for Motherboard.
The astronomers made their discovery with the 6.5-metre (21.3 feet) Magellan Clay telescope on Las Campanas in Chile.
They examined the spectrum of light emitted from apparent red supergiants, which tells them what elements are present.
When the spectrum of one particular star - HV 2112 in the Small Magellanic Cloud 200,000 light-years away - was first displayed, the observers were quite surprised by some of the unusual features.
Such objects were first predicted to exist in 1975 by astronomers Dr Kip Thorne and Dr Anna Żytkow. They are thought to occur when a neutron star (shown in illustration) collides with a red supergiant and is absorbed. The exact process by which this happens though is not well understood
Project leader Dr Emily Levesque of the University of Colorado Boulder and her colleagues took a close look at the subtle lines in the spectrum and found that it contained excess rubidium, lithium and molybdenum.
WHAT IS A NEUTRON STAR?
When the core of a massive star undergoes gravitational collapse at the end of its life, protons and electrons are literally scrunched together, leaving behind one of nature's most wondrous creations: a neutron star.
Neutron stars cram roughly 1.3 to 2.5 solar masses into a city-sized sphere perhaps 12 miles (20 kilometers) across.
Matter is packed so tightly that a sugar-cube-sized amount of material would weigh more than 1 billion tons, about the same as Mount Everest.
Past research has shown that normal stellar processes can create each of these elements, but high abundances of all three of these at the temperatures typical of red supergiants is a unique signature of TŻOs.
‘Studying these objects is exciting because it represents a completely new model of how stellar interiors can work,’ said Dr Levesque.
‘In these interiors we also have a new way of producing heavy elements in our universe.
‘You've heard that everything is made of “star stuff” - inside these stars we might now have a new way to make some of it.’
And Dr Żytkow, who has now seen her prediction be validated, said: ‘I am extremely happy that observational confirmation of our theoretical prediction has started to emerge.’
‘Since Kip Thorne and I proposed our models of stars with neutron cores, people were not able to disprove our work.
‘If theory is sound, experimental confirmation shows up sooner or later.
‘So it was a matter of identification of a promising group of stars, getting telescope time and proceeding with the project.’

The team is careful to point out that HV 2112 displays some chemical characteristics that don't quite match theoretical models.
Co-author of the study Dr Philip Massey of Lowell Observatory in Flagstarr, Arizona points out: ‘We could, of course, be wrong.
‘There are some minor inconsistencies between some of the details of what we found and what theory predicts.
‘But the theoretical predictions are quite old, and there have been a lot of improvements in the theory since then.
‘Hopefully our discovery will spur additional work on the theoretical side now.’

(N.Morgan) Of all of the sightings we’ve seen lately, this one is by far one of the most odd and dazzling. Above the skies of Houston Texas, people were treated to the sight of a strange UFO presence. Again, one has to ponder what is going on with all of these sightings and the boldness being displayed, during the sightings.
A brief history of UFOs: An unidentified flying object, or UFO, in its most general definition, is any apparent anomaly in the sky that is not identifiable as a known object or phenomenon. Such anomalies may later be identified, but depending on the evidence or lack of evidence, such an identification may not be possible generally leaving the anomaly unexplained. While stories of unexplained apparitions have been told since antiquity, the term “UFO” (or “UFOB”) was officially created in 1953 by the United States Air Force (USAF) to serve as a catch-all for all such reports. It was stated that a “UFOB” was “any airborne object which by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object.”
As originally defined, the term was restricted to those fraction of cases which remained unidentified after investigation, with USAF interest being for potential national security reasons and/or “technical aspects.” (See Air Force Regulation 200-2.) During the late 1940s and through the 1950s, UFOs were often referred to popularly as “flying saucers” or “flying discs”. The term UFO became more widespread during the 1950s, at first in technical literature, but later in popular use. UFOs garnered considerable interest during the Cold War, an era associated with a heightened concern for national security.
Various studies have concluded that the phenomenon does not represent a threat to national security nor does it contain anything worthy of scientific pursuit (e.g., 1953 CIARobertson Panel, USAF Project Blue Book, Condon Committee). Culturally, the phenomenon has often been associated with extraterrestrial life or government-related conspiracy theories, and has become a popular theme in fiction.
An Arizona witness at Yuma recalls events from 38 years ago when a UFO moved close to family members at a drive-in movie theater, according to testimony in Case 60102 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting center.

The witness was at the drive-in with her mother, stepbrother and young daughter when dim lights were seen in the sky in September 1976.

“I simply assumed the dim lit lights were that of the windows of a passenger airplane,” the witness stated. “At this point I couldn’t see its shape – just the lights.”
But the object wasn’t moving.
“After about 20 to 30 minutes of glancing at what I assumed were window lights, I realized this ‘plane’ was not moving nor was it making any sound and realized it was not a plane. I stood up in the bed of the truck and told those with me to look. I began pointing at it because they couldn’t see it. Its windows were too dim.”
Then the object moved closer.

“It was a very dark object, but the closer it moved the better I could see its shape. It looked as if it had a wide, huge bell on top of it. When I saw it almost over our truck, my mother and stepbrother still couldn’t see it. A lady in a car next to us began trying to see it. It moved upward, tilted and that is when I saw the brighter lights on the bottom of this object. I was almost screaming for them to see it!”
As the object moved away, it appeared to be a saucer shape.
“At that moment it began moving, wobbling, and began going upward with its shape changing into a typical saucer shape. My stepbrother saw it at this point and said, ‘I see it! Look!’ At that time it began flopping from one side to the other several times. With each flop it got smaller like it was moving away. We were both tying to get my mother to see it, and she did at the point just before it went away. It was gone in a breath but left twinkly sparkles behind it. It looked as if it had gone through a door and closed it.”

West Virginia witnesses at Elkins reported watching and following a low flying , triangle-shaped UFO that eventually appeared to cloak itself and disappear about 8:40 p.m. on September 25, 2014, according to testimony in Case 60101 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The reporting witness and his wife were driving south out of Elkins on Beverly Pike when two bright orange lights were observed low in the sky.
“The light on the right was higher than the one on the left, suggesting the object had just changed direction or was banking from a western direction of travel to a northern direction of travel,” the witness stated.

The couple moved closer to the object.
“We watched the lights get closer and appear level as the object was traveling due north in the opposite direction of travel from us. We noticed a third, dim white light in the front of the object, thus forming a triangle of lights with the two orange orbs to the rear/side.”
The witness described the object.
“As we got closer I noticed the orange lights were hourglass-shaped. Last night was very clear and devoid of any cloud cover. This made it possible to discern the shape of the object was indeed a triangle, flat black in color, reflecting no light.”

The witness believes there may be many more witnesses out there.
“This is a heavily populated area with many brightly lit businesses. The object traveled directly over a huge shopping center with Wal-Mart and several neighborhoods. We pulled over at a Ford dealership to observe and watched as the object slowly passed by – much too slow for even a small Cessna and at a low altitude.”
The object was low enough in the sky for a good look.
“The altitude was roughly slightly lower than that of which an airplane would be if it was about to land. I’d estimate speed at around 30-40 knots. The scale of this thing was huge! It’s ‘wing’ span I would estimate around 100 yards. I am very familiar with general aviation and military aircraft and this was neither. I saw no discernible control surfaces, canopy, windows, or any other feature – just flat black with two orange lights and one white, dim light.”
The object did not appear to move away, but just disappeared.
“As the object passed by us, it disappeared as if using a cloaking device. All we could see was stars. Again, this is a very heavily populated and bustling area. Anyone traveling south on the Beverly Pike between 8:35 and 8:40 would have seen it, as it was flying parallel with the five-lane on the Wal-Mart side of the highway.”

Nicolas Cage has done some spooky things for his movie roles, including taking on the role of Johnny Blaze in the Ghost Rider films. The most unusual, even for Cage, was when he stayed not only in a haunted house in Louisiana, but also Dracula’s Castle.
The nephew of the renowned director Francis Ford Coppola, Nicolas had decided to change his last name to make it on his own merits. Taking on the last name of not-so-well-known Marvel Comics character Luke Cage (one of his favorites), he certainly distanced himself from his already famous relative. The way he became famous was apparently by taking odd roles and putting his own brand of strangeness into them.
To prepare for one of his least successful films, Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance, Cage had spent a night in Dracula’s Castle in Romania to “channel the energy,” said costar Idris Elba. Elba had seen him come on the set and noticed he had that “up all night” look about him.
That was when Nicolas Cage confessed he’d spent the night in the fabled ruins, and Elba could only ask why he did that.
Idris Elba explained Cage’s actions as well as he could.
“We were shooting in Romania, Transylvania, and he just went up there to spend the night, as you do. And then he walked away. True story.”
Cage also owned a haunted house in Louisiana from 2007 to 2009. He had been writing a horror novel and wanted some inspiration, so it only made sense to him that said inspiration should come from the home of a notorious serial killer.
The home had once belonged to Madame Lalaurie, a nineteenth century socialite known for torturing and murdering her slaves. Apparently a history of violence and suffering was all the house had to offer, because Nicolas Cage admitted he didn’t get very far with the novel despite it having been called the “most haunted house in America.”
Cage’s attraction to all things spooky seems to have no end, since he once starred as a man who thought he had become a vampire after getting involved with an allegedly undead lover.
The Left Behind actor may have gotten his start in spooky dealings when someone had allegedly told him his son Weston would be dead by the age of 15. That person was wrong, but the message may have played with Cage’s mind a bit much and created a curiosity about the things that go bump in the night.

Chinese restaurant sold ‘opium-laced noodles’ so addicted patrons would come back for more
A noodle shop owner in northern Shaanxi province was detained after he was discovered to have been adding parts of a poppy plant, from which opium is made, to food so that customers would keep coming back. The noodle shop’s owner was held for questioning and confessed that he purchased 2kg of poppy shells (the bud of the plant in which poppy seeds are found) for 600 yuan(£60, $100) in August.
He secretly added it to the food to lure in more customers. The owner was detained for 10 days. Poppy shells used to be an ingredient in a popular hot pot sauce until the product was banned. The restaurant’s activities came to light after one customer, Liu Juyou, 26, tested positive during a routine urine test under an anti-drink-driving programme. He said he never touched illegal substances, so was shocked by the test result.
Liu was detained for 15 days from September 3, unable to convince police that the drug, he suspected, might have come from the food from a noodle shop he frequented. Liu asked his family to help him test the theory, eating noodles at the restaurant and going home to take urine tests. When the relatives also tested positive for drugs, they alerted the police, who launched an investigation.
An anti-narcotics police agent said that chemicals from poppy, even poppy seed pods, could build up in the body – enough to get a positive for opiates on a drug test. If the food is ingested over a long period of time, it would have an addictive effect, he said. However, despite finding the restaurant culpable, Liu’s appeal against his detention was dismissed by police, who said their priority was to detect drugs and punish drug users. The mainland’s anti-drug law bans opium, heroin, morphine, marijuana and any other anaesthetic and psychotropic drugs which can be addictive. – SCMP
Looking for extraterrestrial life is akin to a search for a cosmic needle-in-a-haystack, as evidenced by the above incredible Hubble Space Telescope image showing approximately 10,000 galaxies.
In large part, thanks to NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, more than 1,400 planets have been identified beyond Earth.
A few days ago, NASA tried closing the gap between life on Earth and the possibilities of life elsewhere. The space agency and the Library of Congress (image below left) brought together scientists, historians, philosophers and theologians from around the world for a two-day symposium, “Preparing For Discovery.” Their agenda: To explore how we prepare for the inevitable discovery of extraterrestrial life, be it simple microbial organisms or intelligent beings.
“We’re looking at all scenarios about finding life. If you find microbes, that’s one thing. If you find intelligence, it’s another. And if they communicate, it’s something else, and depending on what they say, it’s something else!” said astronomer, symposium organizer and former chief NASA historian, Steven J. Dick.
“The idea is not to wait until we make a discovery, but to try and prepare the public for what the implications might be when such a discovery is made,” Dick told The Huffington Post. “I think the reason that NASA is backing this is because of all the recent activity in the discovery of exoplanets and the advances in astrobiology in general.
“People just consider it much more likely now that we’re going to find something — probably microbes first and maybe intelligence later,” he added. “The driving force behind this is from a scientific point of view that it seems much more likely now that we are going to find life at some point in the future.”
Among the many speakers at last week’s astrobiology symposium, one has raised a few international eyebrows in recent years.
“I believe [alien life exists], but I have no evidence. I would be really excited and it would make my understanding of my religion deeper and richer in ways that I can’t even predict yet, which is why it would be so exciting,” Brother Guy Consolmagno, a Jesuit brother, astronomer and Vatican planetary scientist told HuffPost senior science editor David Freeman.
Consolmagno has publicly stated his belief that “any entity — no matter how many tentacles it has — has a soul,” and he’s suggested that he would be happy to baptize any ETs, as long as they requested it.
“There has to be freedom to do science. Being a good scientist means admitting we never have the whole truth — there’s always more to learn.” Consolmagno also doesn’t think the public would panic when or if it’s revealed that alien life has been found.
“I really think it would be a three-day wonder and then we’d go back to worrying about reality TV or the crazy things going on in Washington — that’s the way human beings are. Because I think most people are like me: we expect it’s out there. And our reaction would be, ‘Wow, thank heavens. It’s about time.”
Earth is no longer the center of the universe, nor is it flat — at least that’s the currently accepted thinking among most scientists. And we now know, conclusively, that there are a lot more planets than the ones in our own solar system.
“The number of habitable worlds in our galaxy is certainly in the tens of billions, minimum, and we haven’t even talked about the moons. And the number of galaxies we can see, other than our own, is about 100 billion,” Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at California’s SETI Institute told HuffPost.

At the NASA/Library of Congress symposium, Shostak gave out some startling numbers about how many stars there are in the part of the universe that we can see. “It’s a big number: 10,000 billion, billion. And we know that most of those stars have planets — 70 or 80 percent. If all of those planets are sterile, and you’re the only interesting thing happening in the cosmos, then you are a miracle. That would be exceptional in the extreme. So, the middle-of-the-road approach is to say, ‘You’re not a miracle, you’re just another duck in a row of ducks.’”
“The bottom line of this,” Shostak said, “is something like one in five of all stars may have an analog to Earth. That’s a lot of habitable worlds, and, indeed, the number of Earths in our own galaxy might be on the order of 50 billion.”
Those are big numbers to ponder.
The D.C. conference included a great deal of discussion about the upcoming mission of the Hubble’s long-anticipated successor: the James Webb Space Telescope. As large as a tennis court, this deep space observatory is scheduled for a 2018 launch and will orbit beyond our moon. The Webb telescope will focus on new planetary discoveries and collect data from the atmospheres of those planets, looking for certain things that might point to what we would consider possible indicators of life.
HuffPost asked Dick, an astrobiologist, for his opinion on the continuing output of UFO reports around the world.
“I try to keep an open mind on this. Ninety-some percent can be explained by natural phenomena, etc. The question is what to do with the other 3 or 4 percent,” Dick said. “My opinion is that they should be studied further, on the one hand. By definition, they’re something that we don’t know what they are. They could be some physical, psychological or social phenomena that we don’t know about. But I think it’s jumping to a conclusion that they’re extraterrestrial. I don’t see that evidence.

I woke up about 2 AM with my cat napping between my ankles. He had curled up and started purring, no way in hell I was going to wake him up. I rolled over and went back to sleep.
At 9 AM, I woke up to my alarm, called a store to see if my application had gone through yet, and reached down to pet Gandalf. He hadn’t moved, which I thought was strange because he’s still young and doesn’t sit still for longer than 20 minutes. I started talking to him, which usually gets a churr in response. He was silent. I nudged him off my foot, when I realized he was stiff.
I put my hand on his chest, not breathing. I panicked and picked him up, absolutely rigid and cool to the touch. His tongue was out slightly, and I started crying. I had just lost a cat a month ago, right before we got Gandalf. I shook my boyfriend awake, telling him, “There’s something wrong with Gandalf wake up wake up!”
Then I heard a churr. Gandalf sat up and stretched, then attacked my boyfriends feet for moving under the covers. Boyfriend snapped at me for scaring him awake, and told me to lay back down for a bit before I got up. From waking up, to discovering my dead cat, to waking my boyfriend up couldn’t have taken more than two minutes, but I checked my phone and it said 10:30 AM.
All day I keep checking on Gandalf, the only strange thing about him is he hasn’t let me out of his sight since this morning. Combine that with the creepy alien kitty outside and I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight.

As an abductee, whenever I have been in the presence of tall reptilians, rage and hatred is palpable, from them; according to several psychics, who never met each other, I am a reincarnated Pleiades officer who was on a rescue mission to save Earth children from reptilian slavery and in the process, I and my crew were captured and hanged.
Most fascinating, without them ever seeing me, I have a noose-like scar from surgery on my neck, to remove discs that crushed my spinal cord , this lifetime, a vestigial remnant of reptilian vendetta exacted in this lifetime.

A quantum leap in humankind' s intellectual development occurred in Sumer 6000 years ago when cuneiform writing was invented in order to record a dramatic starburst. Every pulsating thrust of the technology with which humankind surrounds itself today was initiated when a star died in a dramatic, brilliant explosion.
The psychological and cultural impact of the supernova on the inhabitants of Sumer was overwhelming. Literally “overnight” in evolutionary terms, the Sumerians gave the world a law code, the first love song, the first school system, the first parliament, and the first directory of pharmaceutical remedies. The origins of contemporary Western culture were nursed in Sumer, the cradle of civilization. The roots of the Judeo-Christian religious beliefs grew from the “tree of knowledge,” the Garden of Eden, which tradition places in that same area.
Today astronomers recognize the nearest and brightest supernova ever witnessed by humankind as Vela X, now a faintly flashing pulsar about 1300 light-years from our solar system. George Michanowsky, a specialist in Mesopotamian astronomy, saw how the very first and most fundamental symbol of Sumerian script was one which represented “star.” He went on to show how the first word ever written by a human soon became linked with the symbol for “deity,” thus communicating “star god.”
The great metaphysician Rudolf Steiner theorized that the people of our prehistory had been largely guided and directed by a higher order of beings who interacted and communicated with certain humans–the smartest, the strongest, the most intellectually flexible. Eventually these select humans produced what might be called demigods, divine human beings, who, in turn, could relay instructions from higher intelligences.
In effect, Steiner may have given us another definition of the semi- divine progeny that the ancient Hebrews named Nephilim,” which does, in fact, mean demigod, men of “great renown.”
Steiner went on to speculate that within the larger evolving human race are the descendents of those divine-human hybrid beings, men and women who are animated by higher ideals, who regard themselves as children of a divine, universal power. It need not be overemphasized that the larger body of humankind is devoted to the service of egotism, materialism, and selfish, personal interests.
Steiner believed that within what he termed the emerging “Sixth Post-Atlantean Race” would be children of the divine universal power who would be able to initiate those men and women who have developed their faculty of thought so that they might better unite themselves with the divine. The children of the divine universal power, those who have the “seed” within them, will be able to initiate the more advanced members of humankind. People so initiated will be able to receive revelations and perform what others will consider miracles. The initiates will go on to become the mediators between humankind and the higher intelligences.
The whole point of the efforts of these higher intelligences is to enable humankind to become more independent, more able to stand on its own feet without having to rely on the higher order of beings that directed us in ancient times.
Rudolf Steiner was born at Krajevic, Austria-Hungary (now Yugoslavia) on February 27, 1861. Although he had experienced encounters with the mystical and the unknown as a young child and was guided by an adept he would only refer to as the “Master,” Steiner's early academic accomplishments were in the scientific fields. His father had wished him to become a railway engineer, which led Rudolf into a study of mathematics, and seemed only to whet his appetite for the material sciences, leading him to pursue studies in medicine, chemistry, physics, as well as agriculture, architecture, art, drama, literature, and philosophy. Fascinated by the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Steiner began the extensive task of editing Goethe's scientific papers, and from 1889 to 1896 worked on this project. It was also during this period that Steiner wrote his own highly acclaimed The Philosophy of Freedom.
When he was in his late thirties (c. 1897), Steiner received a revelation of what he believed was the turning point in human spiritual history, the incarnation of the Divine Being known as the Christ. In the twentieth century, Steiner said, humankind began to enter the “fullness of time” when the Christ principle, cosmic consciousness, might once again become manifest.
Steiner defined “Christ consciousness” as a transformative energy that greatly transcended orthodox Christianity. In Steiner's view, the Master Jesus became “christed” and thereby was able to present humankind with a dramatic example of what it means to achieve a complete activation of the spiritual seed within all human souls and to rise above all material considerations.
In Steiner's Tenth Lecture on the Gospel of St. Luke, he reflects that just as a plant cannot unfold its blossom immediately after the seed has been sown, so has humankind had to progress from stage to stage until the right knowledge could be brought to maturity at the right time.
To Steiner, the Christ energy is the catalyst that germinates the seed that great Spirit Beings implanted within their human offspring. There were, of course, the physical seeds of male and female, which intermingled to produce the whole human being. But there was also something in each human that did not arise from the blending of the two physical seeds. There was, so to speak, a “virgin birth,” a something ineffable, Steiner says, which somehow flowed. into the process of germination from quite a different source: “
In 1913, Steiner set about forming his own group, the Anthroposophical Society, which he declared would be about the utilization of “human wisdom” (anthro=man; sophy=wisdom)to achieve contact with the spiritual world. The human intellect, Steiner insisted, could be trained to rise above material concerns and to perceive a greater spiritual reality. The human consciousness had the ability to activate the seed that the great Spirit Beings had implanted within their human offspring.
Steiner emphasized that the path to such contact might best be attained by a proper application of meditation. When human consciousness had been raised to the spiritual level where it can experience the eternal element that is limited by neither birth nor death, then it can comprehend its own eternality and its ability to be born again in subsequent life existences.

Such spiritual prophets as Steiner have foretold that humankind is now entering the “fullness” of time when cosmic consciousness, can once again become manifest. Sensitive observers of the contemporary scene have taken careful note of the fact that thousands of men and women throughout the world are being activated by a heightened state of awareness that comes to them in dreams, visions, and strange memories. These individuals are feeling the seed bringing forth new life within them and they are concerned about the spiritual needs of the human souls around them.
Spiritual history is replete with many sincere and insightful prophets and teachers who lived before the Master Jesus, but, Steiner said, they could speak to their fellows only by using the faculties transmitted through their earthly natures. They must use the energy and the wisdom of Earth.
According to Steiner, Jesus tapped into an awareness of that higher energy which comes from the realm of the Divine. He knew that a speck of this energy no larger than a mustard seed could exalt the human psyche. He knew that even the slightest infusion of this energy into the physical seed of male and female would transform the individual into a citizen of a higher dimension of reality, the “Kingdom of God.” And, at the same time,.he taught that the doorway to enter such a wondrous kingdom lay within the heart of each sincere pilgrim who sought to join him there.
Perhaps something truly was added to the energy of the Earth Mother at that time–call it the Holy Spirit for lack of a better term—and hundreds of thousands of men and women are being activated by that same cosmic energy today as it is received in their dreams, visions, and memories. All over the planet, contemporary citizens of Earth are having the seed within them, their spiritual legacy from beyond the stars being brought to fruition.
Futurist Theodore J. Gordon has commented: “In considering the future of religion, it is appropriate to ask what the unknown might yield in the next few decades that would have relevance to man' s view of his relationship to the cosmos. A major event … would be the discovery of extraterrestrial life wherein we would become members of a community of life, participants in a drama bigger than we could have dreamed.”

Still wondering about the mystery of flying saucers and 3-foot tall aliens dressed in metallic clothing, which the FBI described in a 1950 memo? The agency has released a statement with details about the famous document.
The memo describing the mysterious UFOs was created in 1950, three years after the Roswell incident, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation claims they are not connected. In a blog post published this week, the agency says it never investigated the mysterious sightings – even though it could not explain what Guy Hottel, former head of the FBI’s Washington, D.C. field office, described.
“An investigator for the Air Force stated that three so-called flying saucers had been recovered in New Mexico,” Hottel wrote in the memo, which was addressed to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. “They were described as being circular in shape with raised centers, approximately 50 feet in diameter. Each one was occupied by three bodies of human shape but only 3 feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth of a very fine texture. Each body was bandaged in a manner similar to the blackout suits used by speed fliers and test pilots.”
According to the document, three men including a police officer, a highway patrolman and an army guard had all reported seeing a “silver colored object high up approaching the mountains at Sardina Canyon” which then “appeared to explode in a rash of fire”. It also explained that several residents had reported witnessing two explosions, followed by a falling object.
The memo had first been released under the Freedom of Information Act in the late 1970s, but was not available online until the FBI uploaded its public records in April 2011. Since being posted to the Internet two years ago, the document has generated more than two million views, making it the FBI’s most-viewed public record in history.
The document’s publication has led to numerous media reports that labeled it as “proof” of alien existence. In 2011, the Daily Mail connected the FBI’s report to the 1947 Roswell UFO incident – an alleged extraterrestrial spacecraft crash that has been the subject of controversy for decades.
But since the FBI’s memo was published three years after the Roswell incident, the agency wants the media to know that it is a separate incident and that it never solved the mystery.
“The Hottel memo does not prove the existence of UFOs. It is simply a second- or third-hand claim that we never investigated,” the bureau said in a blog post on its website.
“There is no reason to believe the two are connected,” the post added.
Even though it is the FBI’s job to investigate potential security threats, which may include unidentified flying objects and mysterious explosions, the agency has defended its inaction, claiming that verifying UFO sightings is not part of its job description.
“The FBI has only occasionally been involved in investigating reports of UFOs and extraterrestrials,” the blog says. “For a few years after the Roswell incident, Director Hoover did order his agents—the request of the Air Force—verify any UFO sightings. That practice ended in July 1950, four months after the Hottel memo, suggesting that our Washington Field Office didn’t think enough of that flying saucer story to look into it.”
Although the FBI wants to clear up rumors about the memo and claims that it never confirmed that any sort of alien life forms had been found, the agency does admit that the sightings still remain a mystery – a statement that might instill hope among UFO believers.
“Sorry, no smoking gun on UFOs,” the agency writes. “The mystery remains…”
