Images of the Martian surface sent back by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) are helping scientists confirm a mystery that has long been pondered and debated: Is there liquid water on Mars? And if so, can it be a factor in sustaining life?

The short answer: Yes. Thanks to findings published today in the scientific journal Nature Geoscience, scientists now know there is salty liquid water flowing seasonally on Mars’ surface.

The news is also being confirmed by an announcement from NASA HQ by Jim Green, director of planetary science; Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program; and Mary Beth Wilhelm of NASA’s Ames Research Center.

How did they make this discovery? After analyzing the planet’s features based on density and light absorption over the past few years, scientists have noticed dark streaking on the surface that points to the existence of rivers and streams. Today, their new observations show a directional tide and flow to these areas, which are cyclical and coincide with warmer seasons.

This indicates freeze and thaw—a sure sign of the existence of liquid water.

The current presence of this essential building block for life has astrobiological and geological implications that will affect how we approach human exploration and future colonization of our neighboring world.

The potential for continuing life on Mars in any form heavily depends on whether liquid water can exist on the surface. Current conditions indicate that in order for organisms to survive on the planet, they would have to be in a state of hibernation during the winter when all traces of water would freeze. While this process may be familiar to what we experience on Earth, the water itself is far more dense and may appear gelatinous in its liquid form.

Various salts have been detected on Mars along the darker streaks where water may flow. These salts can lower the freezing point of water and lower the evaporation rate, increasing the possibility of a consistent liquid state during the warmer seasons—a condition that could set the stage for an active biological process.

Scientists have always theorized that the dark streaks—known as recurring slope lineae (RSL)—appear on the surface when the temperature is warmer and fade when the temperature drops due to the presence of liquid water.

Spectral imaging from a tool called the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Orbiter now proves the streaks are in fact caused by downhill-flowing salty water.

The CRISM instrument has collected data from four different locations where RSL are present and found evidence of hydrated salts at all four locations in the seasons when recurring slope lineae are most prominent.

The discovery of these hydrated salts supports the theory that the RSL form as a result of current water activity on Mars.

Two of the primary authors of the paper detailing these new findings, Alfred McEwen and Lujendra Ojha, have been searching for definitive proof of liquid water on the Martian surface for the past few years.

Mr. Ojha, a Ph.D. candidate in planetary science at Georgia Tech, previously made headlines as an undergrad at the University of Arizona where he co-authored a study with Mr. McEwen that suggested liquid water flowed during the warmer months on Mars.

Mr. Ohja noticed unusual features on the images from a study by UA researcher Colin Dundas that looked at gullies in Mars craters. After cleaning up the images by using a computer algorithm to remove distortions and shadows, Mr. Ohja was able to show changes in the landscape over time that revealed the dark streaks. This was the first indication of possible flowing salt water on Mars.

After the NASA news conference back in 2011, Mr. Ojha said, “There’s going to be years of research put into this to even prove that this is definitely a proof of water. And from that, we can move on: O.K. if this is water, what are the chances that life could be in these kinds of surroundings?”

It seems that just four years later, Mr. Ohja has his proof.

NASA Confirms Evidence That Liquid Water Flows on Today’s Mars

New findings from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.

Using an imaging spectrometer on MRO, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet. These darkish streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons. They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder times.

These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water. The blue color seen upslope of the dark streaks are thought not to be related to their formation, but instead are from the presence of the mineral pyroxene. “Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long suspected,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water — albeit briny — is flowing today on the surface of Mars.”

These downhill flows, known as recurring slope lineae (RSL), often have been described as possibly related to liquid water. The new findings of hydrated salts on the slopes point to what that relationship may be to these dark features. The hydrated salts would lower the freezing point of a liquid brine, just as salt on roads here on Earth causes ice and snow to melt more rapidly. Scientists say it’s likely a shallow subsurface flow, with enough water wicking to the surface to explain the darkening.

“We found the hydrated salts only when the seasonal features were widest, which suggests that either the dark streaks themselves or a process that forms them is the source of the hydration. In either case, the detection of hydrated salts on these slopes means that water plays a vital role in the formation of these streaks,” said Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, lead author of a report on these findings published Sept. 28 by Nature Geoscience.

Ojha first noticed these puzzling features as a University of Arizona undergraduate student in 2010, using images from the MRO’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). HiRISE observations now have documented RSL at dozens of sites on Mars. The new study pairs HiRISE observations with mineral mapping by MRO’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM).

The spectrometer observations show signatures of hydrated salts at multiple RSL locations, but only when the dark features were relatively wide. When the researchers looked at the same locations and RSL weren’t as extensive, they detected no hydrated salt.

Ojha and his co-authors interpret the spectral signatures as caused by hydrated minerals called perchlorates. The hydrated salts most consistent with the chemical signatures are likely a mixture of magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate. Some perchlorates have been shown to keep liquids from freezing even when conditions are as cold as minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 Celsius). On Earth, naturally produced perchlorates are concentrated in deserts, and some types of perchlorates can be used as rocket propellant.

Perchlorates have previously been seen on Mars. NASA’s Phoenix lander and Curiosity rover both found them in the planet’s soil, and some scientists believe that the Viking missions in the 1970s measured signatures of these salts. However, this study of RSL detected perchlorates, now in hydrated form, in different areas than those explored by the landers. This also is the first time perchlorates have been identified from orbit.

MRO has been examining Mars since 2006 with its six science instruments.

“The ability of MRO to observe for multiple Mars years with a payload able to see the fine detail of these features has enabled findings such as these: first identifying the puzzling seasonal streaks and now making a big step towards explaining what they are,” said Rich Zurek, MRO project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.

For Ojha, the new findings are more proof that the mysterious lines he first saw darkening Martian slopes five years ago are, indeed, present-day water.

“When most people talk about water on Mars, they’re usually talking about ancient water or frozen water,” he said. “Now we know there’s more to the story. This is the first spectral detection that unambiguously supports our liquid water-formation hypotheses for RSL.”

The discovery is the latest of many breakthroughs by NASA’s Mars missions.

“It took multiple spacecraft over several years to solve this mystery, and now we know there is liquid water on the surface of this cold, desert planet,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “It seems that the more we study Mars, the more we learn how life could be supported and where there are resources to support life in the future.”

There are eight co-authors of the Nature Geoscience paper, including Mary Beth Wilhelm at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California and Georgia Tech; CRISM Principal Investigator Scott Murchie of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland; and HiRISE Principal Investigator Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona Lunar and Planetary Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona. Others are at Georgia Tech, the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and Laboratoire de Planétologie et Géodynamique in Nantes, France.

The agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin built the orbiter and collaborates with JPL to operate it.

NASA vindt vloeibaar water op Mars -HLN.be

De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA heeft bewijzen van vloeibaar water gevonden op Mars. Het nieuws lekte al uit voor de eigenlijke persconferentie, die je hier live kan volgen om 17.30 uur.

Wetenschappers tasten nog in het duister over waar het water vandaan komt, maar het zou kunnen opstijgen uit ondergronds ijs of zoute grondwaterlagen, of condens uit de dunne atmosfeer van Mars.

"Er is nu vloeibaar water op de oppervlakte van Mars", zegt Michael Meyer, het hoofd van het Marsonderzoek bij NASA, aan the Guardian. "We vermoeden dat het op zijn minst mogelijk is om nu een bewoonbare omgeving te hebben."

UFO veroorzaakt auto-ongeluk ( VIDEO )

Het is bekend dat UFO’s soms voor gevaarlijke situaties zorgen in de lucht door vlakbij verkeersvliegtuigen op te duiken. 

Nu hebben ze een dodelijk ongeval veroorzaakt doordat een chauffeur werd afgeleid door een UFO die boven de weg vloog. 

Op zich lijkt het natuurlijk wel grappig als je op je schadeformulier kunt invullen dat het ongeluk dat je net hebt gehad, is veroorzaakt door een UFO en dat buitenaardsen aansprakelijk gesteld dienen te worden voor de schade. 

Het is echter wat minder grappig als zoiets in het echt gebeurt en er een dode te betreuren is. 

Ongeveer tien dagen geleden vond er een dergelijk ongeluk plaats in Oedmoertië, een autonome republiek gelegen in het westen van Rusland. 

Op een tweebaansweg wordt de 60-jarige chauffeur van een auto afgeleid door een UFO, botst tegen een vrachtauto en bezwijkt aan zijn verwondingen.

Een 22-jarige passagier die eveneens in de auto zat, is overgebracht naar het ziekenhuis en vertelde dat de chauffeur was afgeleid door een vreemd object dat net voor het ongeluk in de lucht heen en weer vloog. 

In de video hieronder die is opgenomen met een dashcam in een auto die achter de vrachtwagen reed, zie je de UFO en hoe het ongeluk gebeurde. 

Andere mensen die op de weg reden, hadden eveneens het vreemde object in de lucht gezien. 

De politie zegt dat ze de zaak in onderzoek hebben en bevestigt dat ze ook de aanwezigheid van de UFO nader zullen onderzoeken, maar kunnen op dit moment nog geen verdere mededelingen doen.

Researchers Unable To Identify Mysterious Flying Object Over New York

A flying object on a video taken off the coast of Long Island left many researchers baffled. A witness recorded a video of the boomerang-shaped object as it moved fast across and brightly lit the sky around 10:30 pm in Port Jefferson in April.

The witness then sent the video to the Mutual UFO Network, hoping to get explanation about it.  According to the witness, he noticed red and blue lights hovering in the sky when he looked to his left. He then reportedly stopped and watched it for a while to determine if it was just a toy.

To the witness’ surprise, the object went higher into the sky and began to travel very fast. The witness took out his phone and started to film till the phone died.

Researchers say that the witness may have just seen and recorded a drone, but they can’t give a precise explanation because they can’t tell in the video the distance of the object from the witness.

MUFON chief analyst for photo and video, Marc Dantonio, said that there’s no reliable way to find out the range of the object in the video, which presents them with a problem in determining the object’s nature. The object could be a small object or a radio-controlled drone or perhaps a plane, Dantonio said.

MUFON field investigator for New York, Joseph Flammer, also pointed out that there are many airports close to the area, but ruled out the possibility of a plane. He said that the object seemed to fly at a level of a drone controlled by a person at night, which supported Dantonio’s drone theory. However, Flammer added that he can’t say the object wasn’t real unknown.

10,000-year-old rock paintings depicting aliens and UFOs found in Chhattisgarh, India

CHARAMA (Chhattisgarh): Chhattisgarh state department of archaeology and culture plans to seek help from Nasa and Isro for research on 10,000-year-old rock paintings depicting aliens and UFOs in Charama region in Kanker district in tribal Bastar region. 

According to archaeologist JR Bhagat, these paintings have depicted aliens like those shown in Hollywood and Bollywood flicks. Located about 130km from Raipur, the caves come under village Chandeli and Gotitola. 

"The findings suggest that humans in prehistoric times may have seen or imagined beings from other planets which still create curiosity among people and researchers. Extensive research is needed for further findings. Chhattisgarh presently doesn't have any such expert who could give clarity on the subject," Bhagat told TOI.

There are several beliefs among locals in these villages. While few worship the paintings, others narrate stories they have heard from ancestors about "rohela people" — the small sized ones — who used to land from sky in a round shaped flying object and take away one or two persons of village who never returned. 

"The paintings are done in natural colours that have hardly faded despite the years. The strangely carved figures are seen holding weapon-like objects and do not have clear features. Specially, the nose and mouth are missing. In few pictures, they are even shown wearing space suits. We can't refute possibility of imagination by prehistoric men but humans usually fancy such things," the archaeologist said.

He added that it is a co-incidence that such ancient images appear to have sharp resemblance to UFOs shown in alien movies. "The fan-like antenna and three legs of vehicle's stand clearly show a similarity to UFO type craft," he said. 

Other archaeologists would also be consulted for further verification.

NASA komt met iets groots: 'Mysterie rond Mars opgelost'

De NASA gaat morgen om 17:30 uur iets groots over Mars bekendmaken. De ruimtevaartorganisatie heeft nog niets losgelaten waar het precies over gaat. Alleen dat er 'een mysterie rond Mars is opgelost'.

Er wordt uitgebreid gespeculeerd. Zou er bijvoorbeeld methaan of water gevonden zijn (wat weer kan duiden op de mogelijkheid dat er leven is op de planeet)? Of zou de Marsrover Curiosity iets anders hebben gevonden?

De NASA pakt behoorlijk uit met een persconferentie waar de belangrijkste ruimtewetenschappers aanwezig zijn. Deze is via NASA.tv live te zien. Morgen om 17:30 dus.

Theoretical astrophysicists have discovered that millions of planets are more habitable than we realized

The hunt for extra-terrestrials has expanded, after theoretical astrophysicists discovered that millions of planets once dismissed as inhospitable could in fact be suitable for alien life.

Earth-like planets are the obvious first place to look for life, but a large number of these orbit stars known as orange and red dwarfs, which are smaller than the Earth’s sun. Dwarf stars are extremely common—they make up more than 70% of stars in the universe—and nearly every red dwarf is thought to have a planet located within a habitable distanceand with similar water levels to Earth.

But until recently, there’s been a catch—Earth-sized planets rotating dwarfs were thought to suffer from rotational lockup. That means they rotate with one side always facing the star, much like how one side of the Moon always faces the Earth. This would create a planet that was half scorching desert and half ice sheet, which is hardly ideal for life.

But research published in Science Express earlier this year found that this isn’t necessarily the case. The authors, led by Jérémy Leconte, a postdoctoral fellow at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto, built a three-dimensional climate model and found that a thin atmosphere would allow a planet to break free of rotational lockup and spin as it rotates around the star.

Scientists previously thought that only a large atmosphere could create a significant spin but, according to Leconte, thin atmospheres may have a larger rotational effect, because they allow more light from the star to reach the planet’s surface. This solar heat drives wind to create an atmospheric tide, which in turn creates a friction that causes the planet to rotate.

The researchers believe that an Earth-sized planet with an atmosphere similar to Earth’s would indeed spin as it rotates around small orange dwarf and some red dwarf stars. The astronomers are awaiting observational evidence to support their theory, but believe this could expand scientists’ search for life outside our solar system.

“If we are correct, there is no permanent, cold night side on exoplanets causing water to remain trapped in a gigantic ice sheet,” Leconte said in a statement. “Whether this new understanding of exoplanets’ climate increases the ability of these planets to develop life remains an open question.”

High-Energy Cosmic Neutrinos Observed At The Geographic South Pole

An team of international experts has announced a new observation of high-energy neutrino particles using an instrument funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The particles from beyond our galaxy have been detected at the geographic South Pole, using a massive instrument buried deep in ice.

The scientists from the IceCube Collaboration, a research team with headquarters at the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, published their new discovery in the journal Physical Review Letters, on August 20, 2015. The new observation confirmed an initial detection of high-energy neutrinos made in November 2013.

Billions of subatomic neutrino particles pass through our planet on a daily basis, however, they cannot be directly observed. For that reason, IceCube Neutrino Observatory, a one cubic kilometer sized detector was sunk into the ice sheet at the South Pole which allowed the scientists to indirectly observe the particles, by detecting the products of their interaction with ice sheets.

Neutrino particles travel throughout the universe, almost entirely undisturbed by matter and pointing to the sources of their creation. The highest energy neutrinos presumably originate from the most extreme phenomena of the universe,  which are able to generate energies million times more powerful than those generated by a man-made source such as the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.

“Cosmic neutrinos are the key to yet unexplored parts of our universe and might be able to finally reveal the origins of the highest energy cosmic rays, including the rare ‘Oh-My-God’ particles,” says IceCube Collaboration spokesperson Olga Botner, of Uppsala University.

The observatory records 100 000 neutrino particle every year. Most of them are called muons and they are generated during the cosmic ray interaction with the Earth’s atmosphere. To detect other types of neutrino particles, the researchers have used planet Earth to filter out the large background of atmospheric muons. By observing neutrinos from the Northern Hemisphere, they have confirmed the cosmic origin of the particles, as well as the presence of extragalactic neutrinos and the intensity of the neutrino rate.

“Looking for muon neutrinos reaching the detector through the Earth is the way IceCube was supposed to do neutrino astronomy and it has delivered,” said Francis Halzen, IceCube principal investigator and the Hilldale and Gregory Breit Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “This is as close to independent confirmation as one can get with a unique instrument.”

New results agree with the previous and confirm the higher number of neutrinos originating beyond our Solar System. The new high-energy neutrino sample allows the most accurate measurements to date of the energy spectrum and neutrino-type composition of the extraterrestrial neutrino flux, when combined with previous measurements.

“This is an excellent confirmation of IceCube’s recent discoveries, opening the doors to a new era in particle physics,” says Vladimir Papitashvili, astrophysics and geospace sciences program director in the Division of Polar Programs. “And it became possible only because of extraordinary qualities of Antarctic ice and NSF’s ability to successfully tackle enormous scientific and logistical problems in the most inhospitable places on Earth.”

LIFE ON MARS!? NASA'S SCIENTISTS TO REVEAL 'MAJOR FINDING' ON MONDAY

The space agency will gather a host of experts to its headquarters in Washington for a briefing where it promises to announce it has solved a huge mystery surrounding the Red Planet.

 

 NASA's previous announcements have revealed groundbreaking findings, such as that in July of the discovery of Earth-life planet Kepler-452b, outside of the Solar System. 

 

Experts at this event include Jim Green, the director of planetary science at NASA and Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program. 

 

Has NASA finally found life on the red planet? One theory is they will announce microbial life on the planet but a more likely scenario is evidence of flowing water.

 

 Those hopes have been given a boost by the attendance of scientist Lujendra Ojha, of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, at the Nasa announcement. 

 

He first came up with the theory that Mars has liquid salt water flowing through it during warmer months. 

 

Water is one of the key requirements for life and such a discovery would significantly boost chances of alien beings on Mars.

 

 That discovery came from NASA's four-wheel drive Curiosity Rover which is currently probing the baron landscape of the planet.

 

 Last month the Curiosity, which has been based on the Red Planet for three years, found rocks a metre under the surface containing up to four times as much water as previously thought. 

 

There has also been satellite images of what looked like an old riverbed, with round pebbles indicating flowing water was once there. 

 

Recent images from Curiosity also showed dark and basaltic rocks on the planet, leading to speculation the planet may have even once been covered with water - making it biologically closer to our world.

 

 

"The large bundle of images that Curiosity has taken on Mars, which have been made available through NASA’s website, have already prompted researchers to speculate the existence of microbial fossils, and of strange alien objects." 

 

US science writer Kevin Kopas said of that discovery:

 

 "This new evidence comes in support of speculations by many scientists that Mars was once an Earth-like planet, with continents divided by oceans, both teeming with microbial life, at least"

L’exploration dans les prochaines années de planètes potentiellement habitables relance férocement le débat sur une éventuelle colonisation de l’Homme vers d’autres mondes, Elon Musk proposant de son côté une terraformation originale de la planète rouge.

« Je pense que la survie de l’espèce humaine dépend de sa capacité à vivre dans d’autres endroits de l’univers, parce que le risque d’une catastrophe de détruire la Terre est grand. Donc, je tiens à éveiller l’intérêt du public dans les vols spatiaux », a-t-il déclaré au journal El Pais, et rapporté par la République.

Stephen Hawking a lancé une campagne de recherche de vie intelligente dans notre galaxie, d’après lui « si des Aliens viennent nous rendre visite, le résultat serait très similaire à ce qui est arrivé lorsque Christophe Colomb a débarqué en Amérique : cela a-t-il été une bonne chose pour les Amérindiens ? ». Le scientifique britannique tient à expliquer sa position : « De mon esprit mathématique, penser qu’il existe une vie extraterrestre est quelque chose de rationnel. Le véritable défi est de savoir comment sont ces Aliens ».

Il y a très peu de temps, il avait expliqué dans une lettre ouverte conjointement avec d’autres personnalités « que les ordinateurs dépasseront les humains grâce à l’intelligence artificielle dans les cent prochaines années. Lorsque cela va se passer, nous devrons être sûrs que les objectifs des ordinateurs correspondront aux nôtres. » L’avenir de l’humanité tiendrait dans un premier temps à une émigration vers une planète proche habitable ou terraformée, afin de reconstruire une civilisation durable. Avec une planète en danger comme la Terre, notre avenir serait dur à assurer en cas de catastrophe, de problèmes avec des intelligences artificielles ou d’une rencontre non amicale avec une espèce extraterrestre.

Ministry of Defence officials 'DID investigate mass UFO sightings in West Wales village'

The Broad Haven Triangle sightings made national headlines nearly 40 years ago

New details have emerged shedding light on a spate of mysterious UFO and alien sightings which gripped a West Wales community almost 40 years ago.

Dubbed the 1977 Broad Haven Triangle mystery, conspiracy theories went into overdrive when reports emerged that 14 pupils from Broad Haven primary school had seen a UFO landing in Pembrokeshire.

The head teacher at the time backed up their claims, saying they had all drawn similar pictures of the craft.

Many others reported being petrified by a strange silver alien.

Now a new novel claims to have revealed details of a declassified MoD document which suggests top-ranking officials carried out a covert inquiry into the mysterious activities.

'Archive evidence'

The Watchers by Neil Spring is said to be based on “true events” and promises to reveal the truth about what really happened at Broad Haven.

According to the Express, Mr Spring researched the case through documents sent to the National Archives 30 years after the bizarre happenings and after a new witness came forward.

“I visited Broad Haven a sceptic, and came away convinced that some of the locals knew far more about the mysterious occurrences of 1977 than they are willing to reveal,” he said.

'Faceless humanoid'

According to documents held at the National Archive in Kew, the story began one night in April 1977 at 2.30am when Rosa Granville, who ran the Haven Fort Hotel in Little Haven, was awoken by strange noise and lights.

Looking out of her window, she described seeing an object which looked like an “upside-down saucer” in the field next to the hotel and two “faceless humanoid” creatures with pointed heads.

The incident, she said in a subsequent letter she wrote to her MP Nicholas Edwards, left her “agitated and disturbed and not the least bit desirous of another encounter”.

'Inundated with sightings'

On receiving Mrs Granville’s letter back in 1977, Mr Edwards contacted the Ministry of Defence and Flight Lieutenant Cowan, an officer from RAF Brawdy, then visited the hotel.

The MP said at the time: “I am being inundated at the present time with representations about UFOs said to have been seen in Pembrokeshire.”

Other incidents reported in the Broad Haven area at the time included a class of schoolchildren who claimed to have seen a spacecraft near their playground.

Then a family said they saw several UFOs in the space of a week, as well as several sightings of silver-suited creatures.

MoD officials expressed no interest, saying there was no threat to national security.

'Discreet inquiry'

However, among the documents was a letter from the head of the MoD’s S4 wing to the Provost Security Service, the RAF’s internal police force.

The S4 chief wrote: ”I have not even told the Minister I am consulting you” and called for a “discreet enquiry” after expressing bewilderment at the number of apparently “level-headed” witnesses to the strange activity.

Mr Spring said: “(The new witnesses’) testimony rocked the very foundations of the British Government.”

'Bombshell document'

Nick Pope, who worked as UFO investigator for the MOD, said: “This bombshell document shows how the MoD’s UFO project asked the RAF Police to conduct a secret investigation into these mysterious events, while Parliament, the media and the public were being told the subject was of no defence significance.

“Defence ministers were cut out of the loop.”

The disclosures have prompted Tory peer Lord Black of Brentwood to call for a full explanation from the MoD of what it uncovered.

'More answers needed'

Lord Black said: “A number of recently released MoD files leave little doubt that a small number of sightings of aerial phenomena - particularly by military personnel, pilots and air traffic controllers - remain unexplained and unidentified.

“There needs to be further examination of these issues in the hope of learning something new.”

The sightings in Broad Haven took place near a military base, leading some observers to suggest the crafts had actually been Harrier jump jets and the aliens were just men wearing fireproof flying outfits.

Two years ago a former US Navy sailor came forward to say that the cause of the silver-suited being was in fact a US military personal wearing their standard fireproof uniform and the UFOs were new Harrier jets being flown.

The MoD has not commented.

Back in 1991, UFO researcher Leonard Stringfield published his then-latest of many reports on crashed UFOs. I had read all of Stringfield’s earlier reports, booklets and books, but this one stood out for me. The reason being that it referenced the alleged crash of a UFO, in 1964. The location was an area of woodland and fields near the Staffordshire, England market-town of Penkridge. It’s a town only a short drive from where I grew up as a kid. At the time, however, I was down in the south of England, in Harlow, Essex. But, I made a note to look into the affair next time I was back in the Staffordshire area.

As for Stringfield’s story, it was an intriguing one. Unfortunately, and as was the case with so many of Stringfield’s informants, the name of the person who provided the story was not listed. Or, rather, it was, but in the form of a pseudonym: “S.M. Brannigan.” According to the story, back in early 1964 “Brannigan” was serving in the US military aboard “…a specially rigged LST, a flagship that was attached to a naval amphibious force at an unspecified point in either the Caribbean or the Atlantic…”

Stringfield’s source informed him that it was his job to intercept and translate Soviet military transmissions. One such transmission – of early 1964 – stood out. Reportedly, the US Navy monitored Soviet chatter concerning the tracking and spiraling to Earth of nothing less than a UFO. Supposedly, the malfunctioning UFO split into two segments: one coming down somewhere in Germany and the other in a wooded/field area near to Penkridge. There were rumors of “remains” and of “bodies” hastily and secretly recovered by UK and German forces.

Well, it was quite a story! But, it lacked a real name for “Brannigan.” And it also lacked solid data, back-up sources, and a specific date. Nevertheless, I have found myself faced with less material to work with – and on more than a few occasions, too. I looked into it for a while, but I could not find a single piece of data to support the story. Now, we move on to 1995. That was the year in which a woman with a deep interest in UFOs, Irene Bott, established the Staffordshire UFO Group. One year later, in September 1996, Irene had a first anniversary SUFOG conference in the area, at which I spoke.

During the booze-quaffing session after the gig, I told Irene about the 1964 affair and she found it all very interesting. To the extent that she made mention of it in the local (but now defunct) newspaper, The Chase Post (which covered the towns and villages in and around Staffordshire’s Cannock Chase). It was an article that led an elderly man named Harold South to contact Irene with a startling story. According to South, he was on-site shortly after the 1964 crash occurred and while hordes of British military personnel were racing around, closing roads through a particular part of the Cannock Chase, and loading a small, delta-shaped vehicle (or parts of it) aboard a large, transporter vehicle.

South also claimed he was later visited by local police, who, he believed, had seen him as he drove close to the makeshift cordon and tracked him down by the license-plate of his vehicle. He also said they confiscated his camera, which he eventually got back, minus the film – which allegedly showed shots of the crash-site. Well, that was quite as story, too! It was not until December 1996 that me and Irene were able to arrange to meet with South in person – which we did, at his small apartment in the town of Brownhills. We called him, around the end of November, to see if one particular date was suitable. It was. Then, on the morning of that particular date (December 11, 1996), we called him again, just to make sure a meet was still cool. Yes, it was.

Well, that was all good. Or, at least, we thought it was. When we got to South’s apartment, his entire demeanor had changed. He didn’t want to talk to us – at all. He was clearly a worried man. He did, at least, invite us in. If nothing else, that was something positive. We asked South what was wrong and, for a few moments, he hemmed and hawed. Finally, however, he told us about the reason for his sudden change of heart. According to South, in between us phoning him and arriving at his home he had received a phone call from the British Ministry of Defense, warning him not to talk to us!

Yes, you know what I’m going to say: that was quite a story too! I have heard a lot of similar such controversial claims over the years, many of which led nowhere. This one, however, was a bit different. We asked South if anyone had called since the MoD phoned. He replied, “No.” So, we asked if we could use his phone and dial 1471. It’s a UK service that allows the caller to obtain the number of the previous, incoming call. Providing, that is, it’s not withheld by the caller.

Sure enough there was a number. We dialed it as South looked on, not unlike someone awaiting a firing squad or castration without anaesthetic. Or both. Not only did we dial, but someone answered. It was a woman who was very cagey about identifying herself by name. We were, however, able to prove the number had taken us to an operator-service that was run by the military. It was responsible for channeling calls to and from military establishments in the West Midlands and Staffordshire regions of the UK. In other words, the call to South could have come from any number of military bases in the area. But, all we had was the operator-number that called South, rather than the originating source that was connected to South by the operator.

Needless to say, it didn’t take us anywhere. But something did. South added that as well as the Ministry of Defense warning him not to speak with us, rather oddly they gave him a number to call in the event that he “might want to speak with” them again. So, we asked for the number and dialed it. This one took us to an office of the Ministry of Defense Guard Service at Whittington Barracks, near the city of Lichfield.

The voice on the other end of the line was cordial (throughout the brief conversation the man at the other end genially called Irene “flower”), but careful about what he said. He gave up nothing at all and the conversation was soon ended. He clearly reacted when we phoned though, since he wanted to know how we had got an internal number at the Guards Service, rather than their main-line. Well, he told us nothing, so we did likewise and said our goodbyes. “Bye, flower,” he said to Irene.

Over the next couple of years, Irene got a few more snippets of data, which collectively suggested there may have been some truth to the story that originally surfaced via “S. M. Brannigan” and Leonard Stringfield, and which was later expanded on by Harold South. It’s an episode that I still occasionally think about, nineteen years after we met that worried old man. Of course, none of what happened on that freezing cold, winter’s morning in December 1996 confirms aliens crashed near Penkridge 51 years ago. All I can say for sure, is that we were able to 100 percent prove that on the day in question – when we were due to speak with him about his crashed UFO claims – Harold South had a call directed to his home from a military operator-based service, and he was given an internal number at the MoD Guard Service, in case he might “want to speak” with someone about his experience.

All of this begs a couple of questions: (A) why was it made so easy for me and Irene to find the military operator’s number via the 1471 service? And (B) why was South even given a number at Whittington Barracks at all? Irene and I wondered if we had a hidden whistle-blower somewhere in our midst. One who was feeding us a few snippets of data (in the form of odd but easily traceable phone calls), in an attempt to try and convince us of the validity of the 1964 crash. But, in a way that didn’t compromise his or her identity.

Admittedly, I have no firm opinion on what went down on that day in December 1996, except to say it was very strange, deeply memorable, and extremely intriguing. Beyond that? Nothing but a mass of questions that are unlikely to ever be answered.
