CONTACTEES, SIGHTINGS AND THE CONSCIOUSNESS CONNECTION
The author’s personal comment: Twenty-four years ago I took a walk on the wild side. I joined a group that had the audacity to go out at night and try to co-create contact experiences with the intelligence associated with the so-called UFO phenomenon. To my surprise and initial delight we were immediately successful. During our first month of teamwork we had a number of sightings while in the field.
But stranger still was that this “Otherness That Experiencers Now Call ET” (TOTENCET) targeted us to have individual sightings under circumstances that were not associated with conducting “contact protocols.” One senior member of team reported receiving the following telepathic communication while viewing a large glowing orb flying above her driveway, “You wanted to see us; well here we are.”
SYNOPSIS: Contact groups attempt to interact with UFO intelligence under fieldwork conditions. The pattern of encounters experienced however also includes individual researchers having personal sightings of UFOs while not doing fieldwork. Three case reports of this phenomenon are described in synopsis form. The implications of this apparent consciousness link between contact groups and UFO intelligence are discussed.
INTRODUCTION UFO contact teams like the CE-5 Initiative, and the Peruvian based group called Rahma facilitate contact experiences with combined programs of psychic/ spiritual training and active fieldwork. These groups emphasize the importance of mental connections between contact workers and UFO intelligence.
I organized a contact team in 1992 and for over 5 years served as a Working Group Coordinator for Dr Steven Greer’s Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence. In 1998 I resigned from that position but continued how to work with Rama, and unaffiliated networks of contact activists.
HIGH STRANGENESS DEFINED
As a former Working Group Coordinator of the CE-5 Initiative in Los Angeles I had ample opportunities to observe unusual occurrences. According to official CSETI documents "High Strangeness" was defined as "The inexplicable effects and often synchronicity of events related to and occurring before, during and after various Close Encounters or UFO/Extraterrestrial Spacecraft sightings."
By definition one cannot explain the inexplicable, nevertheless one can endeavor to describe the inexplicable and in the process possibly gain insight into the mechanisms of contact.
INITIAL EXPECTATIONS WERE WAY OFF BASE
My initial expectation after becoming Working Group Coordinator in 1992 was that UFO sightings would occur as an exclusive function of fieldwork. I anticipated that as my team mastered the contact protocols, we would experience higher and higher levels of what Dr Greer labeled “CE-5s” and that this would occur in a stepwise fashion.
To my surprise however, as soon as our Working Group started to carry out field investigations, a number of individuals started reporting personal sightings of UFOs. The witnesses to these sightings were members of the team, or as in one case the physician wife of a LA CSETI researcher. In her case she became very interested in UFOs as the result of her daylight sighting of a metallic disc. (For confidentiality purposes, all researchers other than Dr. Burkes will be identified by pseudonyms.)
SIGHTINGS NOT DURING FIELDWORK BUT WHILE DRIVING HOME IN THE CAR
These events transpired while the observers were driving home. It is important to note that the first series of sightings occurred during the initial month following the CSETI workshop in August of 1992 that founded the Los Angeles CSETI Working Group. Just 2 days after Dr. Greer's demonstration of fieldwork techniques, the first personal sighting occurred
INDIVIDUAL SIGHTING 1, Sept. 1, 1992
Joseph Burkes MD:while driving home on the 405 Freeway South the Sepulveda Pass at approximately 11:30 PM I had a sighting of an anomalous nocturnal light. It appeared over the highway as a brilliant blue-green light that silently flew by the witness in a northerly direction. It had a slight oscillating movement. At its closest approach light was less than 500 feet away. There was no discernible superstructure associated with the object. This impressed me because of the considerable amount of background illumination from city lights.
The sighting occurred immediately after I had carried out a vigorous defense of CSETI's contact program to several prominent ufologists. In my opinion these senior researchers were not particularly supportive of the concept of proactively initiating contact.
Individual Sighting 2, September 23, 1992
At 2:30 PM a broad daylight sighting of a metallic disc occurred in Woodland Hills California. Dr. Burkes’ colleague Dr. Maria (a pseudonym) observed the UFO hovering two to three miles away over the Santa Monica Mountains. She was driving south towards her home when the sighting occurred. She is a partner in same medical group practice that I was in at that time. Maria is married to “Dr Daniel” who was an original member of my contact team.
Maria was accustomed to identifying conventional craft as the result of her husband's status as a private pilot. It was their custom to attend air shows and other aviation related events and as a result she was knowledgeable about various types of conventional aircraft. Maria reported feeling confident that the silently hovering disc, glittering in the bright afternoon sunshine was a” true unknown.” The object was approximately 30 feet in length. The sighting lasted about one minute.
Individual Sighting 3, September 24, 1992; While driving home at 9:30 PM after attending a two-hour meditation workshop, a 25-feet in diameter metallic globe-like craft was sighted hovering directly above the witness' home in Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Dotha was a founding member of the Los Angeles CE-5 Initiative team. An experienced sky watcher, she had no doubt that it was not a terrestrial craft. The sighting lasted approximately one minute; at its closest approach the silent object was less that 200 feet from the observer.
SIGHTINGS ARE CLUES TO DECIPHER A MYSTERY
As the months rolled by after these dramatic sightings, I started to muse over the details of my associates’ personal sightings. I looked for possible hidden meanings within the circumstances of the encounters that might contain some kind of message relating to the on-going contact work. Perhaps like a detective in a mystery novel, I kept mulling over the various aspects of the sightings. If those particulars were clues, then I was going to use them to solve the mystery as to what was going on within my contact team visa vie our relationship with flying saucer intelligence.
My hypothesis was that perhaps these consecutive sightings were not random events, that they might in fact be the product of conscious decisions by intelligent and technologically sophisticated extraterrestrial beings that staged the encounters for teaching purposes.
CONVENTIONAL WISDOM DOESN’T APPLY TO ALLEGED ALIENS
I wondered whether factors like the choice of individuals selected for the sightings, or perhaps even more minute factors might have special significance. Michael Lindemann, a prominent student of non-human intelligence, has cautioned ufologists to never assume that one can think like an alien. In other words we should not try to impose what passes as human “conventional wisdom” on beings that may have evolved on different star systems.
Such extraterrestrial civilizations would undoubtedly have entirely different cultures, different value systems, and different social organizations as compared to Earth. With such infinite possibilities, perhaps a technologically advanced civilization for purposes unknown to us might choose to communicate via outlandishly subtle means.
AMAZINGLY CONGRUENT CHARACTERISTICS
It should be remembered that approximately 10% of the US population claim to have had a sighting of a UFO. In terms of an individual’s lifetime of experiences however, a sighting is an exceedingly rare event for most people. The fact that these three individuals who knew each other had a sighting within a few weeks should diminish the odds that they were mere coincidences.
Even less likely to occur by chance is the fact that the circumstances of the sightings were highly congruent. The observers were all driving home and were alone in their vehicles. Even the direction of travel was the same; we were all going south when the encounters took place.
PASSIONATE DEFENSE OF PROACTIVELY SEEKING CONTACT.
In my sighting, I had just left a meeting after engaging in a heated polemic defending CSETI's program of human initiated interactions with what I believed at the time was an extraterrestrial intelligence. Present at the meeting was the “old guard” of UFOlogy. Prominent researcher Ann Druffel was there. She explained to me that as “ufologists” we should study other people’s sightings to determine if they are “anomalous” i.e. “true unknowns.”
In no uncertain terms I labeled her approach “old fashioned” and that contact groups like CSETI’s had “opened up a new era” in UFO research. As I left the meeting it was clear that I would never again be invited back to the prestigious “LA UFO Study Group.”
I interpreted my sighting just minutes after leaving the meeting as a message of support, not only for me personally, but also for the larger contact program that I had just so vigorously defended. The sighting gave me a big personal boost that helped sustain my enthusiasm for our project during the difficult months that followed. Considering the organizational and personal challenges that face any new contact team, I will gladly testify that leaders need all the support that they can get.
MEDITATION FACILITATES CONTACT
Concerning Dotha's close encounter with a luminescent globe like UFO, she had just left a meditation workshop. Contact protocols employed by contactee groups involve on-site thought projection methods. Usually this involves guided meditation. In preparation for thought projection, individuals in the team are expected to reach an “expanded state of consciousness” through meditation.
Dotha told me that she thought there was an association between her meditating in the class and her subsequent sighting. If the non-human intelligence responsible for the flying saucer phenomenon were attempting to send my team a message concerning the importance of advanced meditation techniques, what better way to do so than to stage a close encounter just moments after a prolonged meditation session by an experienced practitioner.
Thus two of the three sightings described occurred immediately after the witnesses were involved in activities integral to contact work.
WHY DID DR. MARIA HAVE A SIGHTING?
The most intriguing aspect of this series was the question why was Dr. Maria singled out for a sighting. Although her interest in UFOs soared after seeing the metallic disc, prior to the event her contact with the UFO phenomenon was indirect. It was her husband Dr. Daniel who was the contact activist in the family.
During the autumn months of 1992 our team frequently convened at Maria and Daniel's house for our business meetings. Meditation is not an easy chore for all researchers; both Daniel and I were both having considerable difficulty meditating. We were restless, as many are, when one first attempts to still the mind. Daniel was not able to follow the recommendation of meditating daily.
Maria on the other hand was far more open to meditation practice. It was not until several months later, in December of 1992 that she was to undergo formal contact network training by Dr Greer, and as a result she was officially not part of the Working Group when we first held meetings at her home.
I was quite perplexed as to why she had received a sighting? Dotha and I were active and official members of the team, why was Maria, a non-member, selected for such a dramatic daylight sighting of a metallic disk?
The answer came to me one night as we conducted our business meeting at Maria and Daniel's home. My beeper rang and I had to call the hospital. Maria was in the family room practicing on her harp. An accomplished amateur, she often gave recitals. I asked Daniel where I could pick up a phone away from the meeting. Daniel suggested that I take the call in the family room.
"No," I replied, "I don't want to disturb Maria."
Daniel reassured me by saying, "Don't worry. She practices at least an hour a day. When she's playing her music she's in a total trance."
It was then that it hit me! That was the clue that I had been looking for. Maria although not yet part of the Working Group, was still able to access consciousness in its most unbounded form while she was practicing the harp. In that relaxed state of being carried away by the divine music that she was creating, a trance like state similar to deep meditation was achieved. Her meditation equivalent was her music!
It seemed to me this was possibly part of the message that I was supposed to learn from her sighting. If my hunch was correct, I was impressed by its subtlety.
Personal sightings were clearly linked, not only in time, but also coincided in a variety of other important details, thus indicating that they are not random events. In their totality the patterns of personal interactions confirm the proposition that contact groups have entered into a special collaborative relationship with what in my opinion might well be an extraterrestrial intelligence.
CONCLUSION
I believe that these sightings are part of a much broader range of experiences that indicate the virtuoso psychic technology of what I like to call, This Otherness That Experiencers Now Call ET, the so-called aliens. They, who or whatever “they” ultimately turn out to be, were able to track the three of us and choose the time and place of what were clearly in my view staged events. If “they” could do that with us perhaps there is no such thing as a “random UFO sighting.” I am suggesting that the millions of people that report UFO sightings are telepathically linked to “this otherness.” For me the implications of this proposition are awe-inspiring for the following reasons
The Earth’s population is over 7 billion at this time. If the prevalence rate of a UFO sighting is 10 percent, this suggests that hundreds of millions of people may have a consciousness link with the UFO intelligence by virtue of their having a sighting. Understandably such individuals often have an increased interest in the subject of flying saucers. Under the right circumstances, for example if they had additional sightings or were in an area where a UFO wave had occurred, they then might join the growing number of people that are proactively seeking interactions with UFO intelligence. As one that has promoted human empowered contact with flying saucer intelligence for over two decades, I find this possibility very encouraging.

The death earlier this year of Max Spiers, a British Ufologist, has continued to prompt intense speculation among conspiracy theorists, as an inquest in Kent this week heard he "vomited two litres of black fluid" shortly before he died.
Spiers, 39, originally from Canterbury, was found dead at an friend's apartment in Warsaw in July.
Local authorities initially stated he had died from natural causes – but his mother Vanessa Bates approached the media to express doubts over the verdict.
As an inquest into Mr Spiers' death opened in Canterbury last Monday, Mrs Bates told reporters: “It’s been a long time coming, but I’m just relieved that at last something is happening and there is a proper investigation and inquest."
In a statement, coroner’s investigations officer Caroline O’Donnell told the inquest: “Mr Spiers became ill with a high temperature and was weak."

According to the Kentish Gazette, the following day Mr Spiers vomited two litres of black fluid.
“The friend called a doctor who attempted resuscitation before pronouncing him dead.”
A few days before his death Mr Spiers had sent his mother a text message saying: “If anything happens to me, investigate.”
Mrs Bates, an English teacher, said in October: "[Max] was making a name for himself in the world of conspiracy theorists and had been invited to speak at a conference in Poland in July.
"He was staying with a woman who he had not known for long and she told me how she found him dead on the sofa.
"But I think Max had been digging in some dark places and I fear that somebody wanted him dead."
Coroner Alan Blunsdon told the inquest he was waiting to receive a report from Polish authorities, and that he hopes to have Mr Spiers’ laptop and mobile phone forensically analysed.
The inquest has been adjourned until February 22.
Earlier this year author and journalist Nick Pope, who investigated the UFO phenomenon for the Ministry of Defence in the early Nineties, said on Twitter: “The death of Max Spiers was a tragedy, but having run the UK Government's UFO project I promise we don't go around killing UFO researchers.”
Its motive may be similar to the US government, who he said took ten years to admit that the spate of diamond UFO sightings were down to a trial of high-tech steal fighter jets.
Mr Robinson told Daily Star Online: "The American and British government are happy to let us believe [sightings] are UFOs when it’s just their own new tech."

Mr Robinson added that 3% of unexplained sightings are down to black budget technology.
The reported existence of a "black budget", or "black operations budget", first emerged in the US after the defence department began reporting huge accounting holes at the end of each financial year.
Wild claims suggest that the holes proved that taxpayer money was being siphoned off for top secret military technology.
Truth-seekers claimed the new technology would never be allowed to appear on finance receipts or the balance sheet, which is publicly available.

Flames lick a scorched crater after a strange object was spotted falling to Earth - sparking claims it was a UFO crash.
The amazing footage shows the large, smouldering hole surrounded by singed ground in Fugu County in north-eastern China, reports People's Daily Online.
A local, only identified as Zhang, told how he heard a deep boom coming from the sky before an object plummeted through the clouds and smashed into the earth.
He said it was moving extremely fast as it plunged from the heavens towards the mountain range.

Zhang added: "It made a loud bang when it hit the ground.
"Then it started burning. The dry grass nearby was quickly set aflame."
Other villagers raced to the 'crash site' and were amazed to see a the huge crater but oddly it appeared to be empty.

In June 1934, two gold prospectors were blasting for gold in the San Pedro Mountains of Wyoming when they discovered a small cavern which had been concealed by the deep rock. After exploring the tiny man-made cavern they made a highly unusual discovery – the well-preserved mummified remains of a tiny human being, of approximately six and a half inches in height, sitting cross-legged on the floor.
The body was encased in a gelatinous, preserving substance that meant that the body was perfectly preserved as it had been in life. The body had a flattened nose, full set of teeth and fingernails and appeared to be an old man.
THE MYSTERY OF PEDRO, THE TINY HUMANOID
What was considered particularly interesting about this find was that local Native Americans had a great deal of folklore about little spirits or tiny people in the region. These beings, they said, had magical powers which were ordinarily related to healing but were occasionally prone to bellicosity and sometimes viciously attacked the Native American people with poisoned arrows.
While many immediately presumed that the discovery was an elaborate hoax, many scientists came to the area with a desire to examine the tiny creature (who was quickly nicknamed ‘Pedro’) more thoroughly. In the years that followed, Pedro was subject to some tested. Some of the scientists came to the conclusion that in life he had been a baby who had died shortly after birth. Others suggested that he was an adult, aged between sixteen and sixty-five years old. They said that he could not have been a new born baby because of his full set of extraordinarily sharp teeth and the presence of what appeared to be raw meat in his stomach. Disturbingly, x-rays also revealed that it was likely that Pedro had suffered a violent death. Many of his bones were broken, and there was considerable damage to his spine and skull.
All of these discoveries seemed to raise more questions than they answered and the question of Pedro’s providence was a matter of huge controversy. Some people maintained that he was a human being, others suggested that he was a member of the separate species alluded to in Native American folklore. Others suggested that he could be an extra-terrestrial being of some kind.
Tragically, it appears as though this question may never be answered as Pedro’s body has been missing for some years. His body was displayed in a series of sideshows in the 1940s before being purchased by a collector named Ivan Goodman towards the end of the decade. When Goodman passed away in 1950, he bequeathed them to man called Leonard Waller. Since Waller took ownership of the mysterious body, the trail has gone cold.

People claim to witness strange UFO sightings every so often which leaves us readers with a vague idea of it's authenticity.
Now, some individuals can actually snap some pictures of these strange unidentified flying objects, some being completely fake while others being real but sometimes misunderstood and unrelated to the UFO phenomenon (i.e., birds caught on flight, balloons or other mundane things).
Then there's the actual footage showing the phenomenom in action, with all those strange lights twinkling and changing colors, giving us a sense o truth behind all this ET conspiracy. Again, some videos can be faked with good looking CGI or other visual effects.
But then there's the most uncommon UFO contact, which is an UFO crash. There have been around 10 UFO crash accounts reported throughout the years, most notably the Roswell UFO crash in 1947.
Recently in a rural region in China, a bizarre object feel from the sky creating a crater with debris scattering all around the area. The debris is very peculiar and has been sent for investigation.
Wetenschappers hebben ontdekt dat er onder het oppervlak van onze maan een heel stelsel van stabiele grotten verborgen moet zitten en dat zou mogelijkheden kunnen bieden als we ooit een permanente ruimtebasis op de maan zouden willen openen.
Het onderzoek in kwestie werd geleid door planetair geofysicus Dave Blair van de Purdue University in West Lafayette in Indiana. Het team analyseerde data van een aantal ruimtetuigen die rond onze maan cirkelen en onder meer het oppervlakte van het hemellichaam in kaart brengen.
Wetenschappers hadden eerder al ontdekt dat er kleine afwijkingen waren in de zwaartekracht die konden wijzen op de aanwezigheid van een grottenstelsel onder het maanoppervlak met een breedte van ettelijke kilometers en dat werd in het nieuwe onderzoek verder uitgespit. Dat stelt nu dat de grotten een goede stabiliteit hebben tot een breedte van maar liefst vijf kilometer en als ze een 'dak' hebben van amper twee meter dik. En dat zou mogelijkheden bieden voor toekomstige basissen op de maan. De grotten zouden kolonisten onder meer kunnen beschermen tegen extreme temperaturen, straling uit de ruimte en meteorietinslagen.
De grotten zouden net als gelijksoortige grotten op aarde - in Hawaï en IJsland - ontstaan zijn door het opdrogen van ondergrondse rivieren van gesmolten gesteente of lava, die zo een cilindervormige ruimte achter lieten. Maar waar die op aarde hooguit 30 meter breed zijn, zouden die op de maan zich in de breedte uitstrekken over ettelijke kilometers.
Wetenschappers hebben 'ijsvulkanen' - kraters met bevroren water op de bodem - ontdekt op Ceres. Dit is de grootste dwergplaneet in de asteroïdengordel tussen Mars en Jupiter. Waarom dat zo baanbrekend is? De ontdekking van water op één van de donkerste plekken in ons zonnestelsel kan belangrijke informatie leveren voor het bouwen van kolonies in de ruimte.
Nieuwe beelden van NASA genomen vanop het ruimteschip Dawn heeft onthuld dat er bevroren water vastzit in enkele van de kraters op delen van de dwergplaneet waar de zon nooit schijnt. Ceres is het grootste lichaam in de asteroïdengordel, daarom zijn wetenschappers er zo door geïntrigeerd. Ze hebben het planetair lichaam al uitgebreid vanop aarde bestudeerd met telescopen en andere instrumenten, maar de plek kreeg nooit bezoek van een ruimtetuig tot Dawn er neerstreek in 2015.
Lijkt op lava Het team van planetair wetenschapper Thomas Platz heeft locaties van eeuwige schaduw bij meer dan 600 kraters op Ceres ontdekt, tien van hen bevatten waterijs. De camera's op het ruimtetuig hebben onthuld dat de bodem van de kraters op Ceres bedekt zijn met een stromend materiaal dat gelijkaardig is aan lava op aarde. Maar het materiaal is minder dik dan vergelijkbare formaties ergens anders in het zonnestelsel, aldus wetenschapper Ralf Jaumann van het onderzoeksteam van Dawn. En het heeft een lichtblauwe kleur.
Hoe komt dat ijswater daar? Omdat een berg op Ceres dezelfde kleur heeft en die zou gevormd zijn door erupties van ijs gemengd met modder, vermoeden Jaumann en zijn collega's dat het stromende materiaal een mengeling van ijs, modder en zouten is die uitbarsten aan zwakke punten in het oppervlak van Ceres, wanneer gesteente uit de ruimte of andere objecten de dwergplaneet raken. Of het stromende materiaal kan het resultaat zijn van een object dat erg hard met Ceres botste, die impact kan namelijk zo groot zijn dat het terrein eronder smelt.
Wetenschapster Jennifer Scully was niet betrokken bij het onderzoek, maar zegt dat de ontdekkingen erg betrouwbaar zijn. "In geologische termen zijn de stromingen op Ceres jong, dit toont aan dat Ceres geen statische plek is, maar een dwergplaneet waar dingen nog evolueren."
Koud en donker Ceres is het derde planetaire lichaam, na de maan en Mercurius, waar wetenschappers bevroren water ontdekten. Op deze plekken is het ongeveer -200 graden Celsius, één van de koudste en donkerste plekken in ons zonnestelsel. Ralf Jaumann zegt compleet verrast te zijn door deze ontdekking.
Maandorp Wetenschappers willen meer te weten komen over het waterijs op Ceres en zo ook informatie inwinnen over water op de maan en andere sterrenlichamen zonder atmosfeer. Ze hopen dat deze onthullingen kunnen helpen om een permanente basis voor de mens op de maan te creëren.
Thomas Platz legt de toekomstplannen uit: "We hopen dat door het waterijs op Ceres te bestuderen, we meer kunnen leren over ijs dichterbij huis, de maan bijvoorbeeld. Deze informatie zou mogelijk kunnen maken dat de mensheid ooit daar zal kunnen leven." Wetenschappers hopen een maandorp te bouwen met de middelen die daar voorhanden zijn: metalen, mineralen en waterijs. Toegang tot water is essentieel voor de bewoners. De kans op een menselijke nederzetting op de maan neemt aanzienlijk toe als er water aanwezig is."
Het Europees Ruimte Agentschap heeft onlangs aangekondigd dat het de maan wil koloniseren tegen 2030.
Een team van onderzoekers, waaronder ook Philippe Claeys van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, heeft bij recente boringen in de Golf van Mexico het binnengebergte ontdekt van de Chixculub-krater. Het is de eerste keer dat zo'n binnenring van rotsige bergtoppen, een peak ring, gevonden wordt op aarde.
Afgelopen april en mei trok een internationaal team van wetenschappers naar de Golf van Mexico om voor het eerst offshore-boringen te doen. Om hun monsters te verzamelen reikten ze 506 tot 1335 meter onder de zeebodem en daar vonden ze het bewijs van het bestaan van een peak ring in de Chixculub-krater.
De impact van de meteoriet die 65 miljoen jaar geleden naar schatting 75 procent van alle diersoorten, waaronder vooral dinosauriërs, wegvaagde was zo hard dat tot op een diepte van tien kilometer rotsmateriaal naar beneden en daarna zijwaarts gedrukt werd. Vervolgens stroomde het gebroken en gesmolten materiaal terug richting het oppervlak om uiteindelijk te stollen en de peak ring te vormen.
Een van de belangrijkste ontdekkingen is dat het rotsmateriaal door de inslag poreuzer en lichter werd achtergelaten dan door de modellen werd voorspeld.
Op andere planeten in het zonnestelsel worden grote kraters wel vaker gekarakteriseerd door een peak ring.
"Botsingen vormen het meest voorkomende geologische proces in het zonnestelsel. Deze unieke studie op aarde helpt ons te begrijpen hoe dit kratervormende proces het oppervlak van andere hemellichamen heeft vormgegeven", zegt Philippe Claeys van de VUB.
Op de planeet Mars is voor het eerst het scheikundig element boor of borium aangetroffen, zo heeft allesoversterrenkunde.nl gemeld. De aanwezigheid van dit semi-metaal kan erop wijzen dat er op het hemellicaam langdurig "voor leven geschikt" grondwater is geweest.
De ontdekking was het werk van de Amerikaanse robotjeep Curiosity in de Gale-krater. Miljarden jaren geleden stond die (deels) onder water, luidt het.
Het boor is aangetroffen in aders van calciumsulfaatmineralen. Op Aarde ontstaan zulke boorafzettingen op plaatsen waar veel grondwater is verdampt. Hoe dat op de Rode Planeet precies is gebeurd, is nog onduidelijk.
Het is volgens de website denkbaar dat het water van het voormalige Gale-meer boor bevatte, dat uiteindelijk terechtkwam in de kleiafzettingen op de bodem. Vervolgens droogde het meer op en ontstonden er barsten in het onderliggende grondgesteente. Hierdoor kon grondwater in contact komen met de kleiafzettingen en kwam het borium, samen met calciumsulfaat, in de barsten terecht.
Een andere mogelijkheid is dat het boor, samen met allerlei zouten, op de bodem van het meer achterbleef toen dit opdroogde. Hierdoorzou een boorrijke laag zijn ontstaan op een niveau dat nog niet door Curiosity is bereikt. Grondwater zou deze laag later hebben opgelost, waarna het boor en de zouten in de barsten van het grondgesteente terechtkwamen.
Volgens het Los Alamos National Laboratory zou het grondwater 0 tot 60 graden warm zijn geweest en een ph van neutraal tot alkaline hebben. Het komt aldus leven ten goede.
Dat is een wolk in de vorm van een cilinder die ontstaat als koudere lucht die met een onweersbui meekomt vanaf enige hoogte in aanraking komt met veel warmere lucht aan het oppervlak.
De koude lucht drukt de warme lucht omhoog, waardoor de vochtige lucht condenseert en er een wolk ontstaat.
“Zo’n wolk lijkt op een bol wanneer je er vanaf een bepaalde kant tegenaan kijkt,” aldus Lane.
Soortgelijke wolk
Ene Hanabusa beweert rond dezelfde tijd als Poppy een foto te hebben gemaakt in de stad, waarop een langwerpige, cilindervormige wolk zichtbaar is.
Afgelopen jaar had Nico, een andere Japanse twitteraar, foto’s gemaakt van een soortgelijke wolk:
Eind november zagen talloze getuigen een vreemd naar licht door de lucht zweven waarvan men eerst dacht dat het een meteoriet was.
Dat bleek niet het geval en nu enkele weken later is er hetzelfde licht en duidelijk te zien hoe een UFO langzaam naar de grond daalt.
In de Australische staat Queensland gebeuren de laatste weken bijzondere dingen.
Op 29 november 2016 waren talloze mensen getuige van een soort vuurbol die langzaam door de lucht bewoog boven Newton in de buurt van de stad Toowoomba.
Wanneer je denkt aan een vuurbal in de lucht, dan is het meestal een meteoriet, alleen in dit geval is dat niet zo, omdat experts het met elkaar eens zijn dat dit object daarvoor veel te langzaam beweegt.
Het leek alsof het object op een gegeven moment afdaalde richting aarde.
Volgens astronomieprofessor Jonti Horner, is het inderdaad geen meteoriet, maar het Internationale Ruimtestation ISS die daar duidelijk zichtbaar door de nachtlucht vliegt.
Een paar weken later, op 14 december, is er weer eenzelfde soort object te zien in de lucht. Alleen nu is het op een gegeven moment zo ver afgedaald, dat het duidelijk is dat het geen ruimtestation kan zijn.
Ook hier is men het erover eens dat het geen meteoriet is wat daar naar beneden komt. Het lijkt meer op een bestuurd object dat met een gecontroleerde afdaling bezig is en misschien ergens is geland.
En zo gebeuren er onverklaarbare en vreemde dingen in de lucht boven een staat die al een reputatie heeft op het gebied van onbekende lichten in de lucht:
Het is niet nieuw, maar nog steeds een mysterie en iets wat sommige mensen grote schrik aanjaagt.
Al meer dan 100 jaar worden in het Australische Queensland de zogenaamde Min Min lichten waargenomen die door mensen worden omschreven als spookachtig en eng.
De soms dansende lichtbollen in de lucht worden al langere tijd waargenomen in het noorden van Australië en staan bekend als de Min Min lichten.
Volgens de oorspronkelijke bewoners, de Aboriginals, hebben we hier te maken met de geesten van de doden. Er wordt gezegd dat de lichten nietsvermoedende reizigers achtervolgen en volwassen mannen tot tranen kunnen brengen.
Er zijn talloze verhalen zoals die van Genevieve Hammond, die samen met haar man op een kampeertocht was in Channel Country, een deel van Queensland. Het was een heldere en koude nacht:
“Wij verbleven op een afgelegen boerderij. We waren daar aan het kamperen en wij zagen dit groenachtige ovaalvormig licht dat op een neer bewoog. Het was evenwijdig aan de horizon op ongeveer een kilometer afstand en het leek net boven de grond te zweven. Het bewoog langzaam naar links en kwam vervolgens weer terug naar de originele positie. De ging ongeveer een kwartier zo door. Het was doodstil en het voelde eng”.
“Het kan niets anders geweest dan het Min Min licht, er was daar niets anders en er is geen andere verklaring”.
Door de jaren heen is er getracht met verklaringen te komen voor dit fenomeen. Die variëren dan van UFO’s tot vuurvliegjes en moerasgas. En natuurlijk is er ook altijd een wetenschapper die met een verklaring komt, zoals Jack Pettigrew, een neurowetenschapper. Volgens hem hebben we hier te maken een variatie van de bekende Fata Morgana.
Een soort optische illusie waarbij het soms lijkt dat schepen op de oceaan boven de horizon drijven.
Een fata morgana (herkomst woord: Italiaans: "La fata Morgana") of luchtspiegeling is een optisch fenomeen dat het resultaat is van temperatuurinversie, een verschijnsel waarbij er grote temperatuurverschillen bestaan tussen verschillende luchtlagen.
Shelley Norton, de ambtenaar uit Boulia Shire die verantwoordelijk is voor het toerisme, zegt dat er de afgelopen vier jaar regelmatig berichten komen over bezoekers die het vreemde licht waarnamen.
“Ze komen bij mij binnen, vertellen het verhaal en weten niet wat ze hebben gezien, maar ik kan je verzekeren dat ze het Min Min licht hebben gezien.
Boulia schijnt het centrum te zijn voor mensen die op zoek zijn naar het Min Min licht. Er komen zelfs mensen speciaal naar de streek om dit fenomeen te kunnen waarnemen.
Shelley vertelt over een gebeurtenis, afgelopen september.
“Er was een gezin aan het kamperen. De man werd middenin de nacht wakker en ging naar buiten om te kijken naar wat hij dacht dat de maan was. Toen draaide hij zich om en zag de werkelijke maan. Het leek alsof er twee manen waren. Toen verdween de ene”.
“Soms is het een object dat alleen is en op dezelfde afstand blijft en soms lijkt het mensen te volgen. Soms splitst het zich in tweeën of drieën en danst het boven de boomtoppen. Het doet heel erg spookachtig aan en niemand weet wat het is”.
De eerste keer dat de lichten werden waargenomen was in 1918, bij een hotel dat op 100 kilometer afstand van Boulia ligt. De Aboriginals zullen het waarschijnlijk al veel eerder hebben waargenomen.
De volgende korte video laat een opname zien van een dergelijk licht. Het waren twee auto’s die achter elkaar reden door de nacht in Queensland. De man rijdt in de voorste auto, gevolgd door de tweede met zijn vrouw en dochter. Ze communiceren met elkaar via de CB radio. Na het voorval stopten ze de auto en was er niets te bekennen, ook geen ander verkeer.
Ondanks alle verklaringen blijven de Min Min lichten een mysterie en blijft het mensen vooralsnog schrik aanjagen.
A New Mexico witness at Roswell reported a late-night encounter with a silent, triangle-shaped UFO just 20 feet ahead while driving along a main road moving out of town, according to testimony in Case 80348 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The reporting witness stated that she and her husband were driving from Albuquerque to Carlsbad and had stopped in Roswell to grab a bite to eat before continuing their journey on October 24, 2016.
“After eating – well after sunset – we headed back on the main road out of town,” the witness stated.“Stopping at a red light, behind a couple cars, in our truck with vehicles all around us, we both noticed and said out loud that the object was coming straight towards us from the dark sky.”
The two had recently seen other strange lights.
“In the two week’s prior we had seen ‘lights’ in the sky around Albuquerque and thought this was going to be the same – nope.”
In comparison, this object was right in front of them.

“This one was huge in comparison to the far away sightings we had seen before and close. I didn’t have time to take out my camera or to think really because I didn’t want to miss what was happening.”
The witness described the object.
“The object had lights on all ends, the front(or back) was more triangular with bright, white lights; the back(or front), which was closest to us, was more rounded, but still triangular and had bright red, green and blue lights shining down. It was larger than our truck, appeared to be a solid object and appeared out of ‘nowhere’ and coming straight towards us.”
The witness was not sure what the object was.
“I didn’t know what I thought it was, and after speaking with my husband later, he described what he thought maybe an optical illusion, but then dismissed it right away because I was at a different view point and there was no mistaking it was an object of sorts, not just lights from reflections.”
The object’s first appearance was very close to the witness.
“So, we first noticed it being about no more than 20 feet in front of us at about eye level. It slowly, and at the same time quickly, moved right to us and then stopped/hovered right over top of our truck. I thought I would be able to look out the back window and continue to follow its motion, but it was nowhere in sight when I did, and at the same time the traffic light was turning green (husband was driving) and we started driving forward.”

The witness immediately felt unusual.
“I felt like numb, like did that really just happen and where did the thing go? Also, I didn’t have time to think in the moment, but later wondered, did the other cars see it too? They must have. My husband’s accounts of what occurred are right in line with everything that happened. I felt like it could have been a dream, but it was definitely real life. All this happened over the span of maybe 5-7 seconds and then everything was normal (ish) again.”
The witness has previously had unusual experiences.
“This was not the first experience I’ve had, but definitely the strangest and one worth reporting, I hope to have some light (no pun intended) shed on what happened that night. I must also say that on our trip home the following night we did see a black helicopter carrying something large underneath it – it was too far in the distance to fully capture and I was exhausted of thinking by that point. I don’t know where that was or what time and is not the original report, just had to mention. Thank you.”
Roswell is a city in New Mexico, and is the county seat of Chaves County, population 48,411. Arizona MUFON State Director Donald R. Burleson investigated this case and closed it as an Unknown.
“No conventional explanation for the nature of the described object comes readily to mind,” Burleson wrote in his report. “All things considered, the most prudent conclusion seems to be Unknown/UAV.”

Wetenschappers hebben een ster gevonden die erg op onze zon lijkt. Opvallend is de bijzondere samenstelling van deze ster. Mogelijk heeft de gasbol planeten ingeslikt.
“Dit betekent niet dat onze zon de aarde binnenkort verorbert”, zegt professor Jacob Bean van de universiteit van Chicago. “Maar dankzij deze ontdekking weten we wel dat het soms chaotisch kan zijn in een planetenstelsel.”
Sinds de eerste exoplaneet in 1995 is ontdekt zijn er al meer dan tweeduizend exemplaren gevonden. Toch zijn er nog weinig exoplaneten bij zonachtige sterren gevonden. De ster HIP68468 is 300 lichtjaar van de aarde verwijderd en onthult hoe de toekomst van ons zonnestelsel gaat zijn.
Zon gaat Mercurius aanvallen De komende miljarden jaren zal de zon in omvang toenemen en oefent de ster meer zwaartekracht uit op de binnenplaneten. Mercurius zal over enkele jaren opgeslokt worden door de zon. “Dit onderzoek is een soort post mortem van een soortgelijk proces dat heeft plaatsgevonden bij een andere ster”, legt professor Debra Fischer van de Yale universiteit uit.
Lithiuminjectie De ster HIP68468 is circa zes miljard jaar oud. Dit betekent dat het object zo’n 1,5 miljard jaar ouder is dan onze zon. De ster bevat echter vier keer meer lithium dan verwacht en opvallend veel hittebestendige metalen. Deze metalen komen veel voor op rotsachtige planeten. Lithium wordt door sterren geconsumeerd, terwijl planeten lithium opslaan. Een planeet is immers niet warm genoeg om lithium te vernietigen. Als een ster een planeet opeet, dan krijgt de ster dus een flinke lithiuminjectie.
Astronomen schatten dat de ster net zoveel materiaal heeft opgeslokt als zes aardes bij elkaar. Dat kan dus één superaarde zijn, maar ook meerdere kleinere rotsplaneten.
Gele veren “Je kunt het vergelijken met een kat die naast een vogelkooi zit”, zegt Fischer. “We zien dat er gele veren uit de bek van de kat steken, dus dan is het eigenlijk wel duidelijk dat de kat de vogel heeft opgegeten.”

Op 30 september eindigde ESA’s Rosetta-ruimtesonde zijn missie. Het ruimtevaartuig crashte rond 12:40 uur op het oppervlak van de komeet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Wat waren zijn laatste woorden?
Het signaal van Rosetta verdween 13:19:37 uur. Vanaf toen was het muisstil op de schermen van ESA’s Mission Control. Een bevestiging dat het ruimtevaartuig circa veertig minuten eerder is neergestort op de komeet.

Een reconstructie van de laatste afdaling laat zien dat Rosetta slechts 33 meter naast het doel is geland. De laatste foto – hiernaast te zien – is twintig meter boven de landingsplaats gemaakt. Rosetta vond zijn laatste rustplaats in Ma’at: een regio op de kop van het kosmische badeendje.
Tot het laatste moment ging Rosetta door met metingen. Zo bleek dat de komeet 67P op 27 september zo’n twee eetlepels water per seconde verliest. In vergelijking: toen de afstand tussen de komeet en de zon het kleinst was – in augustus 2015 – verdampte er iedere seconde honderden liters water. Zeg maar: zo’n twee badkuipen vol met water.
Omdat Rosetta geen mens is, zijn er geen laatste woorden gesproken. Maar wat is dan de laatste melding? Het navigatiesysteem meldde op het laatste moment dat er een ‘groot object’ in beeld verscheen. Logisch, want dat grote object was de komeet zelf. Na deze melding stopte de communicatie.
Dwergplaneet Ceres verstopt water in de duisterste hoekjes

Onderzoek wijst uit dat naast de maan en Mercurius ook Ceres water herbergt in permanent beschaduwde kraters.
Dat schrijven onderzoekers in het blad Nature Astronomy. Ze baseren zich op foto’s gemaakt door ruimtesonde Dawn. De sonde cirkelt sinds maart 2015 om de dwergplaneet heen.
Heldere vlekken De onderzoekers bestudeerden 634 kraters op Ceres die nooit zonlicht zien. En in tien ervan troffen ze heldere vlekken aan. Van één van die heldere vlekken kunnen de onderzoekers met zekerheid zeggen dat het om waterijs gaat.
Weinig Wat echter opvalt, is dat er maar relatief weinig permanent in de schaduw gelegen kraters met daarin heldere vlekken zijn op Ceres. Het kan ons meer vertellen over de mate waarin water op Ceres beschikbaar is.
Cold trap Permanent in de schaduw gelegen kraters zijn dé plek om op zoek te gaan naar waterijs. Deze kraters kunnen namelijk dienst doen als ‘cold traps’: plekken waar waterijs zich verzamelt en stabiel blijft. Eerder stelden onderzoekers al dat Ceres voldoende massa heeft om watermoleculen vast te houden. Berekeningen wezen toen uit dat van elke 1000 watermoleculen die op het oppervlak van Ceres gegenereerd worden er per jaar (een jaar op Ceres duurt 1682 dagen) 1 in zo’n ‘cold trap’ belandt. Dat lijkt misschien niet zoveel, maar over een periode van tienduizenden jaren kan zo een dunne, maar voor Dawn detecteerbare laag waterijs ontstaan.
En nu is dus bewezen dat kraters op Ceres daadwerkelijk waterijs herbergen. Ceres is daarmee het derde hemellichaam dat deze ‘cold traps’ bezit. Eerder werden ze ook al op de maan en Mercurius gespot. “Deze detectie versterkt het bewijs dat permanent in de schaduw gelegen gebieden waterijs kunnen bevatten op planetaire lichamen zonder atmosfeer,” zo schrijven de onderzoekers.
