This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Raunchy replicants and amorous aliens: How real is sci-fi sex?

As part of our report exploring the future of sex, we get hot and sweaty with science fiction from "Blade Runner" to "Her." Not all of it is so far-fetched.

Warning: This story contains descriptions of racy onscreen sex -- and seductive aliens.

In Woody Allen's 1973 comic caper "Sleeper," 22nd-century citizens hop into a machine called the Orgasmatron for instant sexual gratification. Sounds pretty fantastical if your idea of high-tech sex is Netflix and chill, but as we slip into wearables that measure pelvic thrusts and have sex with increasingly lifelike robots, it seems the steamiest moments in sci-fi movies and TV shows might be coming sooner than you think.

As part of our CNET special report Turned On exploring the intersection of technology and sex, we take a romp with onscreen science fiction to see what's already made its way into our beds and what still awaits our touch.

Now let's lie back and think of the future.

Image result for Raunchy replicants and amorous aliens: How real is sci-fi sex?

Sci-fi often looks to tech to provide an alternative to all that icky, sticky physical fumbling. The 1968 sexploitation classic "Barbarella" sees lovers of the far future taking "exaltation-transference pills" and pressing together their palms instead of their mucky bits. And in 1993's "Demolition Man," defrosted man-out-of-time Sylvester Stallone looks forward to a night of passion with Sandra Bullock -- until she places brain-scanning helmets on their heads and kicks off a colorful sensory overload that proves too much for the Italian stallion.

    Bettmann

At the climax of "Barbarella," a villainous scientist puts Jane Fonda's titular bed-hopping space adventurer into an orgasm-inducing device called the Excessive Machine. You probably don't have to worry about a deadly climax if a bad guy takes control of your favorite vibrator, but you do have to worry about today's smart sex toys being vulnerable to hacks

Not all onscreen sci-fi gadgets provide happy endings. One of the most chilling, desolate moments in British TV series "Black Mirror" comes in "The Entire History of You." A couple's fractious bickering leads to an energetic bout of passionate lovemaking -- until we realize they're dispassionately reliving an earlier, better time in their relationship thanks to their tiny, memory-replaying camera implants.

    Randy robots

Many sci-fi stories warn that replacing real love and sex with undemanding technology could lead to an austere, dysfunctional society -- and real-life academics have expressed similar concerns. In the 2013 movie "Her," Joaquin Phoenix plays a man in an idealized relationship with an AI. That scenario doesn't seem so far off considering we can already hang out with customizable sex chatbots.

Sci-fi also shows us the ultimate sex toy: fully functional robots. Increasingly lifelike RealDolls with programmable personalities are just months away, though it may be awhile before they're bed-hopping with the masses. In the sci-fi future, however, people are having it away with androids left, right and center.

Image result for Raunchy replicants and amorous aliens: How real is sci-fi sex?

Daryl Hannah as a doll-like "basic pleasure model" in "Blade Runner."

    Getty Images

"Star Trek: The Next Generation" sees Data getting his robotic rocks off more often than some of his fleshy human shipmates. In the polluted future of "Blade Runner," meanwhile, lifelike androids known as replicants colonize the galaxy, fight wars and generally do the jobs no one else wants. That includes entertaining the troops: Pris, played by Daryl Hannah in a straw wig and racoon makeup, is "a basic pleasure model." The scenario brings up uncomfortable questions of consent around sentient beings created solely for the gratification of others, an issue we're already beginning to confront with sex robots that can be programmed to resist your advances.

Recently, we've learned artificial intelligence can pick up our prejudices, but it's already happened on film. The robot in 1980 horror movie "Saturn 3," written by novelist Martin Amis, picks up the worst proclivities of Harvey Keitel's villain, including a murderous lust for Farrah Fawcet

If we ever do find ourselves in conflict with artificial intelligence, our biological urges could prove our undoing. In the 2003 "Battlestar Galactica" series, the Cylons spot this weakness and infiltrate the human race through the clever tactic of being really, really hot.

    X-rated extra-terrestrials

In real life, alien life will probably take the form of bacteria, which isn't anyone's idea of a hot date. In sci-fi, however, many aliens not only know English, but speak the language of love. Good news for Star Trek's Captain Kirk and Commander Riker, who are forever going on stardates, seeking out new life forms and new uncivilized things to do to them.

While Kirk and other sexual spacefarers have a girl in every galaxy, plenty of aliens have made the return trip with a twinkle of stardust in their eyes. David BowieJeff Bridges and Jeff Goldblum make the earth move for the human women they encounter in "The Man Who Fell To Earth" (1976), "Starman" (1984) and "Earth Girls Are Easy" (1988). And in 1988's "My Stepmother is an Alien," Kim Basinger's race gave up sex 3,000 years ago, but that doesn't stop her getting it on with Dan Aykroyd to the strains of "Pump Up The Volume."

William Shatner as Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk, doing his bit for interplanetary relations.

Another otherworldly being who learns about humanity on screen is the orange-haired Leeloo of 1997's "The Fifth Element," played by Milla Jovovich. She's designed to be the ultimate weapon in the battle with a vast and ancient evil. But once that's out of the way, what better way to celebrate than bumping multipasses with Bruce Willis? Big badaboom indeed.

Interestingly, alien beings taking on female form are often treated as horrifying or predatory. "Lifeforce" (1985), "Species" (1995) and "Under the Skin" (2014) all feature beautiful but deadly aliens taking the form of seductive human women to seduce and kill hapless horny men.

Cultural theorists like Barbara Creed have had a field day with these portrayals of female sexuality, referring to the Freudian concept of the archaic mother and the monstrous feminine.

That brings us to the "Alien" series, which inspired a vast mythology and endless scholarly articles around its phallic and vaginal imagery of violent penetration, impregnation and birth.

The series is rammed full of terrifying moments of reproductive body horror -- from the moment a monstrous egg gloopily peeled open and a facehugger leapt out in 1979's "Alien," through the egg-laying of the towering queen creature in 1986 sequel "Aliens" to the visceral gore of this year's "Alien: Covenant," in which an alien curls its spiked tail between two lovers and skewers them mid-coitus.

Fortunately, plenty of celluloid aliens have sex without all that blood and screaming, like the Antareans who join with Steve Guttenberg for a cerebral coupling in a swimming pool in 1985 heartwarmer "Cocoon."

The creatures of the "Alien" series mix phallic and vaginal imagery to horrifying effect.

    20th Century Fox

    Lonely clones

Historically, sex has been important to, y'know, continue this whole human race thing. In the future, however, technology could come up with new ways of propagating the species -- and the impact on society might not be much fun. George Lucas' first film "THX-1138" in 1971 and the 2015 film "Equals," starring Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart, depict austere societies in which emotions and sexual relationships are banned in favor of dispassionate reproduction. While we're moving toward gene therapy and debating the merits of editing the DNA of our children, no one's yet suggesting we give up entirely on making the babies the old-fashioned way.

Fertility is at stake in Hulu's recent hit series "The Handmaid's Tale," based on the horrifying novel by Margaret Atwood. In the near future, it's not technological change at issue but social change, as women are subjugated under a totalitarian religious system in which the few fertile "Handmaids" are repeatedly raped and brutalized. Most chilling is that this sci-fi parable parallels some women's real-life experiences.

In the bleak, near-future parable "Code 46," released in 2003, cloning comes with its own new problems. The state monitors relationships to ensure no one with similar DNA gets together. That's enforced with smart viruses, including one that makes the people in relationships feel physically sick at the sight of each other, which kind of ruins the moment.

Valerian,' a gorgeous sci-fi film based on an extraordinary comic ...

'Valerian': A sci-fi spectacular 40 years in the making

    Nice piece of astronaut

With all those amorous androids and ardent aliens awaiting us, no wonder we're so keen to explore the stars. No one's had sex in space yet (as far as we know), but with commercial spaceflights nearly ready to blast off, it's surely a matter of time before someone joins the 62-mile-high club.

2000 movie "Supernova" and 2015 TV series "The Expanse" are among the sci-fi stories giving us a preview of zero-gravity groping and grinding, but perhaps the best example of getting wet and wild while weightless comes in "Moonraker." The late Roger Moore's James Bond celebrates saving the day by (what else?) "attempting re-entry."

Is Dark Matter Less 'Lumpy' Than Predicted?

Don Lincoln is a senior scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermilab, the country's largest Large Hadron Collider research institution. He also writes about science for the public, including his recent "The Large Hadron Collider: The Extraordinary Story of the Higgs Boson and Other Things That Will Blow Your Mind" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2014). You can follow him on Facebook. Lincoln contributed this article to Live Science's Expert Voices: Op-Ed & Insights.

For as long as we have kept records, humanity has marveled at the night sky. We have looked at the heavens to determine the will of the gods and to wonder about the meaning of it all. The mere 5,000 stars we can see with the unaided eye have been humanity’s companions for millennia.

Modern astronomical facilities have shown us that the universe doesn't consist of just thousands of stars — it consists of hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone, with trillions of galaxies. Observatories have taught us about the birth and evolution of the universe. And, on Aug. 3, a new facility made its first substantive announcement and added to our understanding of the cosmos. It allows us to see the unseeable, and it showed that the distribution of matter in the universe differed a bit from expectations.

The Dark Energy Survey (DES) is a collaboration of about 400 scientists who have embarked on a five-year mission to study distant galaxies to answer questions about the history of the universe. It uses the Dark Energy Camera (DEC) attached to the Victor M. Blanco 4-meter telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatoryin the Chilean Andes. DEC was assembled in the U.S. at Fermilab near Batavia, Illinois, and is a 570-megapixel camera able to image galaxies so far away that their light is a millionth as bright as the dimmest visible stars.

DES is hunting for dark energy, which is a proposed energy field in the universe that is a repulsive form of gravity. While gravity exerts an irresistible attraction, dark energy pushes the universe to expand at an ever-increasing rate. Its effect was first observed in 1998, and we still have many questions about its nature.

However, by measuring the location and distance of 300 million galaxies in the southern night sky, the survey will be able to make important statements about another astronomical mystery, called dark matter. Dark matter is thought to be five times more prevalent in the universe than ordinary matter. Yet it doesn’t interact with light, radio waves or any form of electromagnetic energy. And it doesn’t appear to congregate to form large bodies like planets and stars.

There is no way to directly see dark matter (hence the name). However, its effects can be seen indirectly by analyzing how fast galaxies rotate. If you calculate the rotational speeds supported by the galaxies’ visible mass, you will discover that they rotate more quickly than they should. By all rights, these galaxies should be torn apart. After decades of research, astronomers have concluded that each galaxy contains dark matter, which generates the additional gravity that holds the galaxies together. [6 Weird Facts About Gravity]

However, on the much larger scale of the universe, studying individual galaxies is not sufficient. Another approach is needed. For that, astronomers must employ a technique called gravitational lensing.

Gravitational lensing was predicted in 1916 by Albert Einstein and was first observed by Sir Arthur Eddington in 1919. Einstein’s theory of general relativity says that the gravity that we experience is really caused by the curvature of space-time. Since light travels in a straight line through space, if space-time is curved, it will look to an observer as if light were travelling a curved path through space. [8 Ways You Can See Einstein's Theory of Relativity in Real Life]

This phenomenon can be harnessed to study the amount and distribution of dark matter in the universe. Scientists who peer at a distant galaxy (called the lensing galaxy), which has another galaxy even farther away behind it (called the observed galaxy), can see a distorted image of the observed galaxy. The distortion is related to the mass of the lensing galaxy. Because the mass of the lensing galaxy is a combination of visible matter and dark matter, gravitational lensing allows scientists to directly observe the existence and distribution of dark matter on scales as large as the universe itself.  This technique also works when a large cluster of foreground galaxies distorts the images of clusters of even more distant galaxies, which is the technique employed for this measurement.

The DES collaboration recently released an analysis using exactly this technique. The team looked at a sample of 26 million galaxies at four different distances from Earth. The closer galaxies lensed ones that were farther away. By using this technique and looking carefully at the distortion of the images of all of the galaxies, they were able to map out the distribution of invisible dark matter and how it moved and clumped over the past 7 billion years, or half the lifespan of the universe.

As expected, they found that the dark matter of the universe was "lumpy." However, there was a surprise — it was a little less lumpy than previous measurements had predicted.

One of these contradictory measurements comes from the remnant radio signal from the earliest time after the Big Bang, called the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The CMB contains within it the distribution of energy in the cosmos when it was 380,000 years old. In 1998, the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) collaboration announced that the CMB was not perfectly uniform, but rather had hot and cold spots that differed from uniform by 1 part in 100,000. The Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and Planck satellites confirmed and refined the COBE measurements.

Over the 7 billion years between when the CMB was emitted and the time period studied by DES, those hotter regions of the universe seeded the formation of structure of the cosmos. Nonuniform energy distribution captured in the CMB, combined with the amplifying force of gravity, caused some spots in the universe to become denser and others less so. The result is the universe we see around us.

The CMB predicts the distribution of dark matter for a simple reason: The distribution of matter in our universe in the present depends on its distribution in the past. After all, if there were a clump of matter in the past, that matter would attract nearby matter and the clump would grow. Similarly, if we were to project into the distant future, the distribution of matter today would affect tomorrow's for the same reason.

So, scientists have used measurements of the CMB at 380,000 years after the Big Bang to calculate what the universe should look like 7 billion years later. When they compared the predictions to the measurements from DES, they found that the DES measurements were a little less lumpy than the predictions.

Is that a big deal? Maybe. The uncertainty, or error, in the two measurements is big enough that it means they don’t disagree in a statistically significant way. What that simply means is that no one can be sure that the two measurements really disagree. It could be that the discrepancies arise by chance from statistical fluctuations in the data or small instrumental effects that were not considered.

Even the study’s authors would suggest caution here. The DES measurements have not yet been peer-reviewed. The papers were submitted for publication and the results were presented at conferences, but firm conclusions should wait until the referee reports come in.

So, what is the future? DES has a five-year mission, of which four years of data have been recorded. The recently announced result uses only the first year’s worth of data. More recent data is still being analyzed. Further, the full data set will cover 5,000 square degrees of the sky, while the recent result only covers 1,500 square degrees and peers only half of the way back in time. Thus, the story is clearly not complete. An analysis of the full data set won’t be expected until perhaps 2020.

Yet, the data taken today already could mean that there is a possible tension in our understanding of the evolution of the universe. And, even if that tension disappears as more data is analyzed, the DES collaboration is continuing to make other measurements. Remember that the letters "DE" in the name stand for dark energy. This group will eventually be able to tell us something about the behavior of dark energy in the past and what we can expect to see in the future. This recent measurement is just the very beginning of what is expected to be a scientifically fascinating time.

540 million years ago, seaside sand contained densely packed microbial communities, which created a gooey glue that was excellent for preserving impressions of ocean creatures left high and dry by retreating waves.

The ancient jellyfish were preserved in a slab of sandstone found in southeastern California. Scientists identified 13 of these oval specimens on the rocky surface, ranging from 1.2 to 8.3 inches (3 to 21 centimeters) in diameter. The fossils were lighter than the rock surrounding them, and they varied not only in size but also their style of preservation. [Read more about the graveyard.]

What Causes Spooky Out-of-Body Experiences? It Could Be Your Ears

While driving and accelerating in his car, a man in France suddenly had a bizarre sensation: He felt like he was outside his car, looking in at his physical self, which was still at the wheel.

The man was part of a new study that links problems of the inner ear with eerie "out-of-body" experiences. These experiences are curious, usually brief sensations in which a person's consciousness seems to exit the body and then view the body from the outside.

The study analyzed 210 patients who had visited their doctors with so-called vestibular disorders. The vestibular system, which is made up of several structures in the inner ear, provides the body with a sense of balance and spatial orientation. Problems with this system can cause dizziness or a floating sensation, among other symptoms. [7 Weird Facts About Balance]

Maya Elzière, an ear, nose and throat specialist at Hôpital Européen in Marseille, France, and co-author of the study, enlisted patients who had experienced a range of issues, from recurrent vertigo and tinnitus to infections in the ear. Among these patients, 14 percent reported out-of-body experiences, compared with only 5 percent of healthy people without vestibular disorders who said the same.

"Out-of-body experiences were about three times more frequent" in patients with vestibular disorders, versus those without these disorders, said Christophe Lopez, lead author of the study and a neuroscientist at Aix-Marseille Université in France.

Lopez said the example of the patient who felt like he was outside his body while accelerating in his car makes sense. The scientist explained that since the vestibular system would be responsible for orienting the driver and giving him the sensation of moving forward as he accelerated in a car, a faulty vestibular system could send crossed signals to the brain during the motion.

"If you are sending the wrong signals to your brain about your motion, it creates confusion — your brain has to make sense of conflicting information," Lopez told Live Science. "We think the conflicting signals create a kind of central incoherence, and that creates distortions in the sense of your body and the environment around you." [Top 10 Unexplained Phenomena]

Among the 29 patients in the study who reported experiencing out-of-body sensations, one described it as a "sensation of entering my body, like in an envelope, from the top." Another said, "I saw myself, smaller, from the top."

The research also found that most patients reported they had out-of-body sensations only after they had experienced dizziness for the first time. This suggests, Lopez said, that problems with the vestibular system were a factor in creating the odd sensations.

Out-of-body experiences have been documented for centuries, at least since the late 1800s. One case, recorded by French otologist Pierre Bonnier in 1905, describes a patient who felt "divided into two persons, one who had not changed posture and another new person on his right, looking somewhat outwardly. Then, the two somatic individuals approached each other, merged, and the vertigo disappeared."

Lopez said that doctors have commonly ascribed the sensation to a kind of psychosis. But the new study builds on other recent research that links the feeling, at least in some cases, to faulty wiring in the vestibular system, he said.

"What the authors of [this study] did is carefully quantify the incidence of vestibular sensations and their relation to symptoms traditionally labeled 'psychiatric,'" Peter Brugger, a psychologist at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, told Live Science. Brugger has studied similarly bizarre sensations of people seeing themselves, or their doppelgängers, before them.

Lopez said he was inspired to conduct his research after working in the lab of Olaf Blanke, a neuroscientist at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.

In 2002, Blanke showed that he could induce out-of-body sensations in a patient by electrically stimulating the brain area that integrates vestibular and visual input.

Terence Hines, a professor of psychology at Pace University in New York and author of the book "Pseudoscience and the Paranormal" (Prometheus Books, 2003), told Live Science that the new study makes sense given the role of the vestibular system in the human body.

"I don't think it's the only explanation for out-of-body experiences," Hines said. "But we know that this part of the inner ear plays a role in how we orient ourselves in our bodies, so if something is wrong there, things can go kind of haywire. It's one reasonable explanation."

Other factors have indeed been linked to out-of-body sensations. A personal history of migraines, anxiety and depression have also been associated with more frequent reports of the sensation, according to the recent study. Other research, led by psychologist Andra Smith at the University of Ottawa in Canada, describes the case of a woman who could deliberately trigger an out-of-body sensation, suggesting that it may be possible to do so through meditation.

Also, Lopez said it is common to experience "floating" or "sinking" sensations while falling asleep, dreaming or waking.

"In terms of neurophysiology, it's unclear why that happens," Lopez said. He excluded occurrences around sleep from his study, because they're not necessarily associated with a faulty vestibular system. He also excluded any sensations associated with drug or alcohol use.

Lopez said that while a faulty vestibular system is "not the only explanation for out-of-body experiences," it might be reassuring to some to know that a mechanical explanation could be at play.

"Having an out-of-body experience may happen because one of the main sensory systems is not processing correctly," he said. "It doesn't mean you're crazy."

The study was published online June 8 in the journal Cortex.

Hawking Says Time Running Out – “Colonize Or Die”

Humans need to colonize another planet within 100 years or face the threat of extinction, Stephen Hawking has warned. At the beginning of 2016, Hawing warned about the dangers of nuclear war, global warming, genetically-engineered viruses, and the danger of artificial intelligence. In the new BBC documentary “Stephen Hawking: Expedition New Earth,” the professor warns that “the human race only has 100 years before we need to colonize another planet.”

“With climate change, overdue asteroid strikes, epidemics and population growth, our own planet is increasingly precarious,” Hawking adds in the film.
Hawking used to believe we had about 1,000 years left, but that timeline appears to have shortened.

“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years,” Hawking told the BBC in an interview last year. “By that time we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race. However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.”

Though Hawking’s timeline is more extreme than most, he is not the only visionary to warn about the threat to human existence. Earlier this year, Elon Musk said humans must merge with machines to avoid becoming irrelevant.

Alibaba founder Jack Ma, meanwhile, also recently warned that society could face decades of “pain” because of the disruption caused by new technology and the internet, CNBC notes.

What do you think of Hawking’s daunting prediction?

Astrophysicists Say Our Solar System Long Ago Had An Advanced Civilization…That Vanished Without a Trace!

    News

Was our solar system once home to an advanced civilization that predated humanity by hundreds of millions of years? And we don’t mean humans! While there is no evidence for a pre-human indigenous technological species, people have been speculating about it since ancient times. Now, one space scientist is pointing out that the existence of intelligent space aliens on Earth hasn’t been ruled out either. One so thoroughly wiped out by a comet strike that nearly all evidence of its existence vanished, never to be found again?

If a race of smart aliens did make their home in our solar system, there could be traces of evidence we simply haven’t discovered yet, Penn State astrophysicist Dr. Jason T. Wright notes in his paper “Prior Indigenous Technological Species.” Of course, Wright is not suggesting we’ll find any alien fossils. Instead, he’s talking about “techno-signatures,” a term encompassing a broad range of possible artifacts.

Wright argues that if a prior indigenous technological species did exist, it might have developed on Earth of pre-greenhouse Venus—or even Mars. With surface erosion and shifting tectonic plates on Earth, any evidence on our planet would have been lost long ago. And any artifacts left on Venus probably would have been destroyed by the planet’s atmosphere.

If the beings did make it to Mars, however, Wright believes they might still exist. Though he argues “it is unlikely that artifacts might be obvious from space imagery, or even from the sort of shallow probing performed by the various Martian rovers.” Any signatures would be buried deep under the surface.

Other places to look for techno-signatures would be our moon and the rocky moons and asteroids of the outer solar system. There might even be “large structures flee-floating in space.”

Not all experts are as enthusiastic about this proposal as Wright.

“If I had to guess, I’d say it’s highly unlikely, but not impossible, that an ancient civilization existed—probably even more unlikely we’ll ever find evidence,” Dr. Paul Horowitz, a research professor of physics at Harvard University commented.

When Aliens Come…They Will Come As Machines!

Why would aliens bother coming here in the flesh? Whatever their ‘flesh’ may be – that is! Afterall we sent Rover to Mars! Therefore, a SETI senior astronomer believes that humanity ought to alter its search parameters to incorporate — if not totally concentrate on — clever alien machines. And in the POSTBIOLOGICAL UNIVERSE: Aliens Are Machined Based, Not Meat Based so says NASA’s Chief Historian Steven J. Dick. He believes that the dominant form of life in the cosmos is probably post-biological. Advanced alien civilizations, either through their own trans-biological evolution or through the rise of their artificially intelligent progeny, are more likely to be machine-based than meat-based. We ourselves may be heading in this direction, as witnessed by current and pending advances in genetics, cybernetics, molecular nanotechnology, cognitive science, and information technology. Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) institute, one of the globe’s leading alien hunting group, believes that the rise of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) is inevitable on any life-harbouring planet, including Earth.

Steven J. Dick is the second chairholder of the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology at the Kluge Center. A well-known astronomer and historian of science, he previously served as the Charles A. Lindbergh Chair in Aerospace History at the National Air and Space Museum and as the NASA Chief Historian and Director of the NASA History Office.

As Dick noted in his paper, “The Postbiological Universe”: Because of the limits of biology and flesh-and-blood brains…cultural evolution will eventually result in methods for improving intelligence beyond those biological limits. If the strong Artificial Intelligence concept is correct, that is, if it is possible to construct AI with more intelligence than biologicals, postbiological intelligence may take the form of AI. It has been argued that humans themselves may become postbiological in this sense within a few generations.

Dr. Steven Dick THE POSTBIOLOGICAL UNIVERSE National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)/Headquarters (United States) steven.j.dick@nasa.gov Abstract

Throughout history scientists and the general public have debated whether intelligent life exists beyond Earth. Some, including most SETI scientists, have concluded that such life is likely, and that cosmic evolution has resulted in a biological universe (Dick, 1996; Dick, 1998), defined as characterized by abundant life beyond the mere physical universe of planets, stars and galaxies. However, another possibility exists: that cultural evolution over the long time scales of the universe has resulted in something beyond biology, namely, artificial intelligence (AI). Such a postbiological universe cannot mean a universe devoid of biological intelligence, since humans are an obvious counterexample.

Nor does it mean a universe devoid of lower forms of life, what I have termed the ’weak biological universe’ (Dick, 2000a), as advocated by Ward and Brownlee (2000). Rather, the postbiological universe is one in which the majority of intelligent life has evolved beyond flesh and blood intelligence, in proportion to its longevity. This argument has been broached by MacGowan and Ordway (1966), Davies (1995), and Shostak 1 (1998), and advanced in more detail by Dick (2003). But the possible role of artificial intelligence in the universe was completely overshadowed by the publication of Shklovskii and Sagan (1966).

Although the last chapter of their book Intelligent Life in the Universe included a chapter on Artificial Intelligence and Galactic Civilizations the AI thesis was very general and lost in the midst of the exciting – and at the time more verifiable and realistic – implications of the other chapters, which assumed biological beings.

Over the last 40 years SETI has focused almost exclusively on the biological paradigm, especially the radio SETI technique, as opposed the postbiological paradigm. THE GENERAL ARGUMENT My argument in this paper is simple, but firmly founded in the naturalistic evolutionary worldview. The overarching argument may be stated as follows: Advanced intelligence – defined as at least at the level of homo sapiens – implies culture; indeed some consider culture part of the very definition of advanced intelligence. Moreover, wherever culture exists there will be cultural evolution.

Therefore, if extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) exists, it must have undergone cultural evolution, most likely in direct proportion to its longevity. Because nothing is more important in cultural evolution than intelligence itself, any society will tend to increase its knowledge and intelligence. Because of the limits of biology and flesh-and-blood brains, notwithstanding advances in biotechnology, cultural evolution will eventually result in methods for improving intelligence beyond those biological limits. If the strong Artificial Intelligence concept is correct, that is, if it is possible to construct AI with more intelligence than biologicals, postbiological intelligence may take the form of AI.

It has been argued that humans themselves may become postbiological in this sense within a few generations (Moravec, 1988; Moravec, 1999). This may be optimistic (or pessimistic depending on your outlook). But if ETI exists, and, as seems likely, it exceeds the age of terrestrial technological civilization, we may already live in a postbiological universe. This overarching argument harbors many assumptions: 1) that evolution by natural selection results in intelligence beyond the Earth; 2) That ETI is older than human intelligence 3) that intelligence results in culture; 4) that culture evolves; and 5) that increasing intelligence is a central goal of cultural evolution. Each of these assumptions can be addressed by subsidiary arguments. EXISTENCE AND AGE OF INTELLIGENCE BEYOND THE EARTH The existence of ETI has been debated for millennia (Dick, 1982; Dick, 1996; Crowe, 1986; Guthke, 1990) and the debate need not be recounted here. Suffice it to say that the Drake Equation, which estimates the number of technological civilizations in the Galaxy, has in the past yielded answers ranging from 1 (ourselves) to a billion or more. Never in the history of science has an equation given answers differing by 9 orders of magnitude, an indication of the uncertainties involved. But with the discovery of nearly 200 extrasolar planets over the last decade, one of the Drake Equation parameters, the fraction of stars forming planets, has been increasingly informed by empirical data. While these new discoveries are believed to be mainly gas giant planets, new instruments such as NASA’s Kepler spacecraft will soon yield numbers on Earth-size planets. That will still be only the beginning in determining whether they have life, much less intelligence. But for this part of the argument we make no more assumptions than standard SETI science arguments. The age and longevity of ETI is important for the overarching postbiological universe argument, since ETI somewhat older than humans is a necessity for more advanced cultural evolution. SETI scientists have had much to say about this too, and there is general consensus that ETI would indeed be much older than us (e.g. Tarter, 2000).

Cosmic evolution is our guide to the maximum age of extraterrestrial civilizations. Recent results from the WMAP spacecraft place the age of the universe at 13.7 billion years, with one percent uncertainty, and confirm that the first stars formed at about 200 million years after the Big Bang. The first Sun-like stars probably formed within about a billion years, or 12.5 billion years ago. By that time enough heavy element generation and interstellar seeding had taken place for the first rocky planets to form (Delsemme, 1998, p. 71; Larson and Bromm, 2001). Then, if Earth’s history is any guide, it may have taken another 5 billion years for intelligence to evolve.

Some 6 billion years after the Big Bang, therefore, some 7.5 billion years 2 ago, the first intelligence could have emerged. By the same reasoning, intelligence could have evolved in our Galaxy 4-5 billion years ago, since the oldest stars in our galaxy formed about 10-11 billion years ago (Rees, 1997). These conclusions are in line with those of a number of other astronomers using various methods. Norris (2000) argued that the median age of ETI is 1.7 billion years. Livio (1999) concluded that the first civilizations would emerge when the universe was about 10 billion years old, or 3.7 billion years ago. Kardashev (1997) concluded that cosmological models yield an age for civilizations of 6-8 billion years. Thus, several lines of evidence agree that extraterrestrial intelligence could have emerged several billion years ago. Even uncertainties of billions of years would not affect the argument for taking cultural evolution seriously

But civilizations do not necessarily reach this age. The maximum age of ETI is mitigated by L, the lifetime of a technological civilization (typically de- fined as radio-communicative). Sagan, Drake and others generally assigned L values in the neighborhood of a million years, and even some pessimists admitted 10,000 years was not unlikely (Dick, 1996, p. 441). L is thus hardly an objective parameter, though studies by social scientists might contribute to the debate. That a man-made disaster would totally wipe out civilization seems unduly pessimistic, though natural phenomena such as mass extinctions, supernovae and gamma ray bursters are more problematic (Norris, 2000; Scalo and Wheeler, 2002; Chapman and Morrison, 1989, 1994). But the important point is that, even at our low current value of L on Earth, biological evolution by natural selection is already being overtaken by cultural evolution, which is proceeding at a vastly faster pace than biological evolution. Technological civilizations do not remain static. Therefore cultural evolution must be taken into account in the Drake Equation no less than astronomical and biological evolution. Unlike biological evolution, L need only be thousands of years for cultural evolution to have drastic effects on civilization.

Astronomers Discover A Galaxy Made of 99.99% Dark Matter

NASA, ESA, M.J. Jee and H. Ford
    IN BRIEF
After decades of being ignored, Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) are finally being given the attention they deserve. These galaxies have very few stars and it is believed that dark matter holds these galaxies together. Astronomers turned their sights on Dragonfly 44, a recently discovered UDG, and found that it's comprised of only 0.01% normal matter, and 99.99% dark matter.

THE INVISIBLE GLUE BEHIND ULTRA DIFFUSE GALAXIES

For years, a galaxy named Dragonfly 44 remained unnoticed despite its relative proximity to us here in the Milky Way. This wasn’t surprising, seeing as this galaxy is very dim. Last year, astronomers finally gave it the attention it deserves—and rightly so.

The reason why Dragonfly 44 was dim was because it had very few stars, making it very easy to miss. An observation of the Coma Cluster by the Dragonfly Telephoto Array led to astronomers finally seeing that there was, in fact, a galaxy hiding out there in the expanse.

At first, the lack of stars did strike astronomers as odd. But upon contemplation, its ability to even keep these stars at all was far more strange and interesting than the former mystery.
Why? Sparse galaxies like Dragonfly 44, called Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), have so few stars that normal assumption would dictate these galaxies easily losing the stars they have. Without enough mass in the galaxy to generate the gravitational attraction to keep the galaxy together, these stars could easily spin out of place (and maybe even be kidnapped by neighboring gravitational forces).

The galaxy being able to keep these stars in place despite the lack of visible mass implies one thing: dark matter is the missing link keeping them together.

The two Keck Telescopes on top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii.

    DRAGONFLY 44: 99.99% DARK MATTER

Dragonfly 44 was particularly astonishing: it stretches 60,000 light years across, and only .01% of it comes in the form of stars and normal matter, which would mean the remaining 99.99% is dark matter.

For this study, the astronomers calculated the galaxy’s mass and monitored how fast the stars spin in a 33.5-hour period over six nights. “Motions of the stars tell you how much matter there is,” says lead author Pieter van Dokkum. “They don’t care what form the matter is, they just tell you that it’s there. In the Dragonfly galaxy stars move very fast. So there was a huge discrepancy: using Keck Observatory, we found many times more mass indicated by the motions of the stars, then there is mass in the stars themselves.”
A galaxy made up almost entirely of dark matter was unexpected, and astronomers do not have an explanation on how they form yet. But this finding is a significant aid in the quest to unmask what dark matter actually is.

New Breakthrough Material: Graphene Elastomer is More Sensitive Than Human Skin

    IN BRIEF
This new material is remarkably soft, and it could revolutionize robotics and prosthetics.

Researchers from the Monash University have discovered a new sponge-like material called graphene elastomer. This revolutionary material is expected to be used for robots designed to help take care of elderly people.

The graphene-based elastomer is exteremely sensitive to pressure and vibrations. Also called G-elastomer, the material has the ability to bounce back despite the pressure given to it. It is described to be very soft and elastic compared to other substances such as rubber or foam.

    THE POTENTIAL OF G-ELASTOMER

Revolutionary new graphene elastomer exceeds sensitivity of human skin

Professor Dan Li and Dr. Ling Qiu from the Monash Center for Atomically Thin Materials (MCATN) were excited the discovery and potential of this material.

“This graphene elastomer is a flexible, ultra-light material which can detect pressures and vibrations across a broad bandwidth of frequencies. It far exceeds the response range of our skin, and it also has a very fast response time, much faster than conventional polymer elastomer.,” explained Dr. Qiu in the press release.

“Although we often take it for granted, the pressure sensors in our skin allow us to do things like hold a cup without dropping it, crushing it, or spilling the contents. The sensitivity and response time of G-elastomer could allow a prosthetic hand or a robot to be even more dexterous than a human, while the flexibility could allow us to create next generation flexible electronic devices,” he added.

Professor Li, the director at MCATN, admitted that they are still in the early stages of studying the full potential of the G-elastomer.

However, he is positive that “this research is an excellent breakthrough. What we do know is that graphene could have a huge impact on Australia’s economy, both from a resources and innovation perspective, and we’re aiming to be at the forefront of that research and development.”

The research can be found in the latest edition of the journal “Advanced Materials”. It is protected by a suite of patents.

    The Allagash Abduction

This incident passed off a few years in the past, four men (two of them brothers) would experience something that might change their lives forever. Known as “The Allagash Abduction”, those men might find out something otherworldly might shape the rest in their lives. This tale turned into featured on both the Unsolved Mysteries tv series and The History Channel amongst others.
To date, this story nonetheless resonates with many as being both plausible and worrying. Where this occurred is positioned within the kingdom of Maine. The date turned into August of 1976, 4 guys decided to holiday together to get away the hustle and pollution of the metropolis. All of them are avid fishermen, they heard approximately a gap which become perfect for night fishing. Known as Eagle Lake, this spot is packed with extremely good panoramic scenery stretching as some distance as the eye can see.
They were getting low on substances specially meals, so that they decided to strive once more to trap a few fish in the lake for the duration of the night time. The simplest thing they caught later became a glimpse of some thing alternatively exquisite. Thinking beforehand, they built a as a substitute large campfire to mark their way lower back less complicated. It labored as they could quite without problems see their way lower back. They had been on a small length boat, worn-out and getting ready to surrender, when all of sudden they observed a vivid mild inside the sky.
The depth of this mild become overwhelming, it became brighter than a midnight star. Whatever this turned into, they expected it being nicely over eighty feet in diameter. This item quick approached them after Charlie Foltz decided to use his flashlight to sign it. This object made no noise which turned into alternatively puzzling to them. Whatever this thing became, it had a few shape of intelligence capable of flow so fast closer to them.

They began to fell uncomfortable so started frantically paddling lower back to their campsite. This bizarre brilliant mild engulfed the men at the boat. The subsequent aspect they knew, they have been all status rather confused lower back close to the camp. It didn’t strike them as odd till later. An quantity of time had passed, the campfire became nearly burned absolutely out.

It wasn’t till years later when the guys commenced communicating to one another approximately abnormal goals every of them had. All of them eerily similar, they each defined in element the setting they were at. It changed into some sort of flying saucers with what are called “The Grey” extraterrestrial beings. There had been large sized alien creatures which stood taller than the rest and people regarded to be in fee. These things had massive steel glowing eyes, insect-like hands with four larger palms.

Jack Weiner changed into the first of the men to start having nightmares. Later Chuck Rak, Jim Weiner and Charlie Foltz. All of them sought psychiatric treatment for what they were experiencing. All in their sketches matched up, they were experiencing ordinary dreams for pretty a while. They also met with a hypnotist named Anthony Constantino and the hypnotist stated it turned into the maximum extreme collection of classes that they had ever achieved earlier than. Whatever happened to them turned into rather first rate and similarly documents extra terrestrial encounters.

‘Britain’s mysterious X-Files’ disclosed by UK Ministry of Difence however is there a UFO cover-up?

An professional dossier of 15 files, which has been dubbed “Britain’s X-Files”, has been launched by means of the United Kingdom Ministry of Difence (MoD) and published in paper form via the National Archives – however one expert has advised 3 withheld files will cause accusations of a cowl-up.

At the cease of ultimate week the National Archive released the files, outlining MoD investigations into mysterious incidents and unidentified flying items (UFOs). They had been not digitised and might currently only be viewed in character or via buying them and awaiting transport.

UFO watchers and those who carefully observe the phenomenon of alien life were expecting the files to be released, hoping they may screen secrets from deep within the British government.

Nick Pope, a former MoD expert at the subject, stated withholding files will most effective fuel conspiracies.

“It seems that The National Archives has released 15 of the last 18 Ministry of Defence UFO documents, marking the very last levels of what’s been a 9-yr long task to declassify and release the MoD’s entire archive of UFO documents,” Pope told The Sun.

“Unlike all such preceding releases of UFO documents, I wasn’t pre-briefed on the release date.

“The release of those very last files has been significantly delayed and at one level they had been sent from the MoD to the National Archives, however then despatched returned to the MoD.”

He endured: “Embarrassment approximately this postpone can also give an explanation for why – in contrast to releases of previous batches of MoD UFO documents – there hasn’t been a proactive media release. Accordingly, I suspect the UFO and conspiracy idea community will say that these documents had been ‘snuck out’.”

    What’s inside the ‘X-Files’?

Many sky-watchers was hoping the fresh documents could shine a light on a protracted-going for walks mystery that has emerge as known as the Rendlesham Forest incident – or Britain’s Roswell. This “sighting” happened in 1980 at a navy base close to Suffolk, with some reports of a “triangular shaped craft.”

But alas for the ones chasing little inexperienced guys, Pope advised British tabloid press he did now not accept as true with the MoD files contained a smoking gun. He stated some files likely reference the Rendlesham Forest case but will probably be duplicates of already-launched cloth.

He instructed The Express: “The launch of those real-existence X-Files shows that the UFO mystery lives on and that there’s nevertheless huge hobby in this captivating subject matter. These files will supply people a revealing perception into this weird and fascinating thing of Ministry of Defence commercial enterprise.

“Sadly, there’s no ‘smoking gun’ in those files in an effort to prove we’ve been visited via greater-terrestrials, but there are plenty of intriguing UFO reviews, in addition to policy papers explaining how the MoD treated this difficulty.

“The loss of a smoking gun and the reality that these files seem to had been slipped out without a formal media statement is certain to begin some conspiracy theories, and I know that many human beings trust the ‘excellent stuff’ is being held returned.

“Furthermore, the truth that a few documents haven’t been digitised, can’t be downloaded, and might best be viewed in character on the National Archives will doubtless additionally generate conspiracy theories.

“After this, there are most effective three greater UFO files nonetheless to be launched.”

Pope said these have to be made public “later this year.”

This week (26 June), The Sun newspaper, which has apparently despatched a reporter to examine the archived files, pronounced they reveal how a UFO became spotted on a navy radar for hours over the Skegness coast in 1996 – with a RAF reportedly being instructed no longer to investigate in addition.

The referenced document, which does no longer screen an writer’s call, includes snippets of information from the time – one story titled “UFOS divulge 9-5 defence hazard”.
It allegedly included eyewitness accounts from police, claiming to have viewed “flashing red, blue and white lights” inside the sky.

The news comes after a first-rate scientist at Nasa become forced to refute claims from Anonymous, the free collective of hackers, which stated the enterprise turned into on the cusp of revealing alien existence.

“Contrary to a few reports, there’s no pending declaration from Nasa concerning extra-terrestrial existence,” wrote Nasa’s Thomas Zurbuchen on Twitter.

He added: “Are we by myself within the universe? While we do not know yet, we have missions transferring forward that could help answer that fundamental query.”
Nick Pope has lengthy investigated claims of extra-terrestrials and UFOs, however has consistently denied his personal existence follows the tropes put forward by technological know-how fiction movies.
“How do the MoD’s actual-life Mulders and Scullys compare to their fictional counterparts? Having achieved the activity myself, from 1991 to 1994, I’m sorry to must document that it’s not quite as glamorous as human beings might suspect,” he wrote within the Guardian lower back in February 2010.

“There’s no jogging round dark warehouses with weapons and torches. It’s extra a case of asking colleagues in the RAF to check the radar tapes and writing polite letters returned to members of the public, pointing out that maximum UFOs come to be misidentifications of everyday objects.”

It seems that, for now as a minimum, the truth continues to be available.

NASA Scientist Says: We Are Living In A Hologram Designed By Aliens

A NASA scientist suggests you are residing inside a hologram created through advanced alien species.
What if the whole thing you have got ever carried out or will do is truely the manufactured from a exceptionally-advanced laptop code? Every courting, each sentiment, each memory might have been generated by means of banks of supercomputers.

This turned into the exciting idea first proposed through Nick Bostrom, Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford University and founding Director of the Future of Humanity Institute and of the Programme at the Impacts of Future Technology within the Oxford Martin School, there are numerous scientists who subscribe to this idea.

MessageToEagle.Com has previously reported on how Rich Terrile, director of the Centre for Evolutionary Computation and Automated Design at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory cautioned our author is a cosmic pc programmer.

This would suggest that we are dwelling in a holographic world and the entirety around us, such as ourselves isn't always “actual”. Rich Terrile, nonetheless stands with the aid of his opinion. “Right now the fastest NASA supercomputers are cranking away at about double the speed of the human mind,” the NASA scientist advised Vice.

“If you are making a simple calculation the usage of Moore’s Law [which roughly claims computers double in power every two years], you’ll discover that these supercomputers, inner of a decade, could have the ability to compute an entire human life of 80 years – which include every notion ever conceived during that lifetime – within the span of a month.

“In quantum mechanics, particles do no longer have a specific country except they’re being located.
“Many theorists have spent numerous time seeking to determine out how you provide an explanation for this.

“One explanation is that we’re dwelling within a simulation, seeing what we want to look when we need to peer it.

“What I discover inspiring is that, although we're in a simulation or many orders of magnitude down in degrees of simulation, somewhere along the line some thing escaped the primordial ooze to emerge as us and to bring about simulations that made us – and that’s cool.”

The concept that our Universe is a fiction generated by using computer code solves a number of inconsistencies and mysteries about the cosmos, like as an instance our quest for extraterrestrial lifestyles and the mystery of darkish be counted.

However, there also folks that assume the Matrix idea is defective. “The concept appears to be primarily based on the belief that ‘superminds’ would do things in plenty the equal manner as we would do them,” Professor Peter Millican, who teaches philosophy and computer technological know-how at Oxford University says.

“If they suppose this world is a simulation, then why do they assume the superminds – who're out of doors the simulation – could be limited with the aid of the identical styles of thoughts and strategies that we're?

“They anticipate that the ultimate shape of a real global can’t be grid like, and additionally that the superminds might should put in force a virtual global the usage of grids.

“We can’t conclude that a grid structure is proof of a fake reality simply due to the fact our ways of implementing a fake fact contain a grid.”

However, Professor Millican does trust there is well worth in investigating the idea.

“It is an exciting concept, and it’s healthy to have some loopy ideas,” he instructed The Telegraph.

“You don’t want to censor thoughts in step with whether or not they appear practical or now not due to the fact once in a while critical new advances will seem crazy first of all.

“You by no means know while appropriate ideas can also come from wondering out of doors the box.

“This Matrix notion-experiment is honestly a chunk like some ideas of Descartes and Berkeley, masses of years ago. “Even if there seems to be not anything in it, the fact which you have were given into the dependancy of wondering crazy things could mean that at some point you're going to think of some thing that initially may also seem alternatively manner out, but seems not to be crazy

Russia Claims It’s Building a Nuclear Space Bomber Capable of Striking Any Country in the World

     imgur
    IN BRIEF
The Russian military claims that it is building its own miniature version of the International Space Station, with the main purpose of carrying nuclear weapons, which would allow them to launch an attack anywhere in the world in a matter of two hours.

    WAR ZONE EXPANSION: OUTER SPACE

Through news site Sputnik, Russia says they are building a robotic mini-shuttle, much like a smaller, remote-controlled replica of the International Space Station—filled with nukes.

    sgsg

The robotic plane, similar to the U.S. Air Force’s secretive X-37B robotic mini-shuttle, will be loaded with nuclear warheads, and can launch an attack anywhere in the world within a matter of two hours. The Russian military says the project is making good progress and could very well be up and running by 2020.

“The idea is that the bomber will take off from a normal home airfield to patrol Russian airspace,” Lieutenant Colonel Aleksei Solodovnikov told Russia’s International News Agency. “Upon command it will ascend into outer space, strike a target with nuclear warheads and then return to its home base.”

“I think that its lift-off mass must be 20-25 metric tonnes for it to be a strike aircraft,” Solodovnikov told Sputnik. “It will [be able to accelerate to] hypersonic speed in rocket mode.”

TRUTH OR BLUFF, AN UNSETTLING THOUGHT

Sputnik is run by Russian Federation-owned and controlled agency Rossiya Segodnya and has garnered the reputation of being a biased, propaganda-driven outlet with little-to-no credibility. With Russia choosing this source for the announcement, the news is, in the very least, suspect.

However, whether this is a bluff or not, the mere thought of fast-nuking space planes lurking about and ushering a new era (and arena) of warfare is beyond unsettling and is an act of violation against the Outer Space Treaty, signed by 104 countries in 1967—including Russia.

The treaty declares that: “States shall not place nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction in orbit or on celestial bodies or station them in outer space in any other manner.”

Sputnik reports that the engine for this alleged nuclear space bombing machine will be presented at the Army-2016 International Military Technology Forum, happening this September in Moscow. Until then, we’re all going to have to keep hoping this is nothing more but a ruse.

    Alien Civilizations

Scientists Claim To Have Found 234 Alien Civilizations

Aliens are like buses, you spend ages waiting for one and then 234 come along at once. Or at least, that’s what two astronomers from the Laval University in Quebec are suggesting.

Ermanno Borra and his graduate student Eric Trottier have analyzed over 2.5 million stars and galaxies for pulses of light emitted at regular intervals and discovered it in 234 stars similar in size to our Sun. The team believes that alien civilizations are behind those signals.

The researchers looked at the Fourier Transform (FT) of the light spectrum. The FT is a mathematical tool that allows us to work out where the components of a signal come from. If the light is a milkshake, by using the FT you get the recipe.

The FT analysis has found periodic modulated components which, according to the scientists, are caused by the super quick light pulses (less than a trillionth of a second) generated by Extraterrestrial Intelligence (ETI). In the paper, available from the Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, they discard every other explanation such as instrumental effects, rotation of molecules, rapid stellar pulsations, and peculiar chemistry.

“We find that the detected signals have exactly the shape of an ETI signal predicted in the previous publication and are therefore in agreement with this hypothesis,” the researchers wrote in the paper.

“The fact that they are only found in a very small fraction of stars within a narrow spectral range centered near the spectral type of the Sun is also in agreement with the ETI hypothesis.”

These superfast pulses will have to be generated by incredibly powerful lasers, like the one at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Interestingly, in previous publications Borra has stated that this area of astronomy is the least explored, which raises the question on why these aliens would all decide to communicate in such a complicated and energy-consuming way.

The researchers admit that although they believe aliens is the most likely explanation, this is yet to be confirmed.

The Stephen Hawking-backed project Breakthrough Listen will conduct follow-up observations of these 234 stars, but the team at UC Berkeley, where the project’s science program is based, invite people to be skeptical.

“The one in 10,000 objects with unusual spectra seen by Borra and Trottier are certainly worthy of additional study. However, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It is too early to unequivocally attribute these purported signals to the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations,” the Breakthrough Listen team said in a statement.

Five Traits That Could Get You “Abducted by Aliens”

Research suggests traits could lead to “alien abduction” experiences.

Are you worried about being abducted by aliens? I suspect it will cross the mind of some of you reading this post that alien abduction is a possibility. After all, many people worldwide have claimed to have been abducted by aliens, been taken against their will to an alien spacecraft or enclosed place, questioned or physically examined, and they remember these experiences either consciously or through methods such as hypnosis. Indeed, many of those people who claim to be alien abductees are seemingly sincere, psychologically healthy, nonpsychotic people—so are their experiences real and their claims to have been abducted true?

Professor Rich McNally and his colleagues at Harvard University have spent over 10 years researching the psychology of alien abductees, and in particular why it is that some people embrace the identity of “alien abductee.” His research has isolated a number of traits possessed by ‘alien abductees’ each of which he argues contributes to the experiences they recall when ‘being abducted’ and to the desire to cling on to their belief that aliens were responsible for their abduction experiences. Let’s look at each of these five traits in turn.

    1. Regularly experiencing sleep paralysis and hallucinations when awakening:

Many people who have reported alien abduction suffer episodes of early morning sleep paralysis. On awakening from this paralysis, their terror gives rise to hallucinations of flashing lights and buzzing sounds. Some experience feelings of ‘floating’ around the room or seeing figures in the room. While many people interpret these post-sleep paralysis experiences as dreaming, some people interpret these experiences as seeing figures, ghosts, or aliens.

    2. Tendency to Recall False Memories:

In an elegant set of experimental studies, McNally and colleagues found that individuals who claimed to have been abducted by aliens were prone to what is known as “false memory syndrome.” That is, alien abductees regularly claimed to recall words, items, sentences, etc. in memory tests that they had never actually seen before. If this “false memory” affect can be generalized to autobiographical memories, then individuals who claim to have been abducted by aliens would be twice as likely to “falsely remember” things that had never happened to them than would non-abductees.

    3. High levels of “Absorption”:

Alien abductees also score significantly higher than most people on the mental characteristic known as ‘absorption.’ This is a trait related to fantasy proneness, vivid imagery, and susceptibility to hypnosis and suggestion. Because of this it is probably not surprising that many alien abductees recall their experiences under hypnosis, where memories of abduction can be induced through suggestibility—especially if the person leading the hypnosis session asks particularly leading questions about abduction.

    4. New Age beliefs:

Being whisked up into space ships by tractor beams or light sources is not something that happens every day—nor is it something that is easily explainable within our existing knowledge of physics. Similarly, being subjected to imaginative medical procedures requires a tendency to accept unusual and non-mainstream ideas. This is also a trait possessed by ‘alien abductees.’ They score highly on measures of magical ideation and endorse New Age ideas that encompass beliefs about alternative medicines and healing, astrology, and fortune telling. Such beliefs would certainly allow the individual to accept things happening to them that would be dismissed by existing scientific knowledge.

    5. A familiarity with the cultural narrative of alien abduction:

As a cultural phenomenon, alien abduction has entered folklore and the images and descriptions of aliens and their spacecraft have become familiar to many people. Alien abductees tend to be very familiar with this cultural narrative which is one possible reason why their descriptions of aliens and their spaceships are so similar—being fuelled as they are by sci-fi films and numerous books about aliens and alien abduction.

As Professor McNally points out in a very readable review of his studies on alien abduction, it is still unclear whether all these characteristics are necessary ingredients in the recipe for ‘alien abduction’ or whether some are more necessary than others. Other researchers have also identified further traits that appear to be characteristic of ‘alien abductees’, such as paranoid thinking and weak sexual identity. There is still much more research to do to fully understand the motivations and thinking patterns of individuals who claim to have been abducted by aliens, but as McNally shrewdly points out, these people are not anxious nor depressed, they are not psychotic and do not appear to have any obvious mental health problems. ‘Alien abduction’ experiences often deepen spiritual awareness and give shape to the identities of abductees and provide a basis for their beliefs about the world and the universe. Whether the experiences of abduction were real or not, the experiences and interpretations adopted by ‘alien abductees’ are often psychologically helpful and can be spiritually comforting.

    Finally, a note of caution.

All of these studies of ‘alien abductees’ were carried out after they had their abduction ‘experiences’, so it’s difficult to know whether these five traits are consequences of the experience or were—as McNally suggests—factors that led individuals to interpret rather earthly experiences (such as sleep paralysis and hallucinations) as evidence of abduction. And then— perhaps fantastically—can we genuinely rule out the possibility that such traits are implanted in their victims by aliens in invasive medical procedures carried out on alien space ships! My skeptical, scientific mind says probably not—but who knows?!

Pascagoula UFO Incident: Navy Retiree Says He Also Saw Spaceship 28 Years Ago

Pascagoula UFO Incident: Navy Retiree Says He Also Saw Spaceship 28 Years Ago

    By Natalie Chambers
    The Mississippi Press
PASCAGOULA - When Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker told the world in 1973 they were abducted by aliens while fishing on the Pascagoula River, few people believed them.
Now after 28 years, it appears they weren't alone in their experience on that Oct. 11 night.
A retired Navy chief petty officer recently contacted The Mississippi Press about the sighting that he can't forget.

Mike Cataldo of Rotonda West, Fla., said he was on the pre-commissioning crew of the USS Tunney under construction at Ingalls Shipyard. Dusk was setting in as he and crew mates Ted Peralta and Mack Hanna were on U.S. 90 heading to Ocean Springs. Peralta was driving, Hanna was in the front passenger seat and Cataldo was in the back seat.

"We saw a very strange object in the horizon going from northwest across Highway 90. It was going pretty fast. It went down into a wood area and into the marsh. It hovered over the tree line, I guess, maybe a minute. We actually pulled off the road and watched it. We said, 'My God, what is that."' Cataldo said.

"We saw it, no question about it. We talked about it. Was it a shooting star, a meteorite? This was very different," he said.

Cataldo said the object looked like a large tambourine with little lights flashing on it.

"As quickly as we saw it, it just vanished," he said.

Cataldo said he had a second sighting minutes later, this time in St. Andrews as he neared his home.

"It wasn't as high up as we saw the first time. It was real," he said.

Cataldo said he rushed and told his wife what happened.

"I was almost hyperventilating. I wasn't shook up, but I was excited I saw this thing," he said.

The next morning, Cataldo contacted his executive officer on the submarine and made a report.

The following Monday, he contacted Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi and left his telephone number, he said.

"My executive officer and crew members thought we were just lunatics, just whacked out," he said.

"It never came up again. Keesler never called or did anything," he said.

"It was the strangest thing. It was kind of scary," Cataldo said.

Cataldo retired from the Navy 19 years ago. He was last in Jackson County in 1974.

Cataldo said he has never met or talked to Hickson.

Hickson said neither he nor Parker wanted their story given to the media. Their only objective was to notify the proper authorities, the sheriff's department.

"I've had a few people who said they didn't believe it, but I've never had any ridicule and my family never had. That's one reason when this thing first happened to Calvin and I didn't want to talk about it because I didn't want to be called crazy. But it seemed to me we had to tell the proper authorities," said Hickson, 70, who lives in Gautier.

    The rest is history.

Hickson said he knows other people saw the space craft but wouldn't come forward.

"They would have sure helped us if they would have said something," he said.

Hickson penned a book about the encounter, was interviewed numerous times by the scientific community and made the circuit at seminars on extraterrestrial. In 28 years, he never deviated from his claim of the occurrence behind the old Shaupeter Shipyard building on the Pascagoula River - even under hypnosis.

Parker, who was 19 then, had trouble dealing with what happened. He is now living in Louisiana.

"He's not the same man as before. It just ruined him," Hickson said.

Hickson described the three creatures that floated out to them as pale, ghostlike and about 5-feet high. They had crab-like claws or pinchers and rounded feet. He said they appeared to glide rather than walk.

Hickson said he was taken aboard the oval-shaped, well-lit space craft and examined with some type of "eye."

"Some kind of way they examined me. I've had a feeling ever since it happened that they know where I'm at all times and what I'm doing," he said.

"These things are robots. I didn't see any eyes. They had no indication of breathing. They didn't have a mouth. It was a straight slit. It seems they had something to do and they just actually done it. Took us back out there, put us down and they left," he said.

Hickson said he does not know how long they were with the aliens but he would like another encounter with them.

"When it first happened, I wouldn't go in the night by myself. I would have nightmares. My wife really helped me get through this thing," he said. "Now the fear is all gone. I want to meet them again and see if they will take me to their world. I believe if they do, they'd bring me back. Our whole world here is getting into a terrible shape."

Glenn Ryder, sheriff's department shift captain that night the call came in from Hickson, said it was a busy night, around 11 p.m. when Hickson called from a pay phone and was insistent on talking to then-Sheriff Fred Diamond, who happened to be in bed.

Ryder said Hickson then asked for the second person in charge. That happened to be Ryder. Hickson told Ryder he had something to tell but feared Ryder would laugh.

Ryder told him to go ahead and when Hickson finished, he did laugh.

"I told him to wait there and I would come and talk to him. He said he was going back to his house and gave me the address so I could come there," Ryder said.

"Calvin Parker was just hysterical. He was having fits. I took them in the patrol car to the sheriff's office," Ryder said.

Hickson and Parker were questioned extensively apart and then put in a secluded room together where a tape recorder had been planted to catch them in a lie.

"That boy (Parker) was really shook up. Charles was composed. The boy had just come down here from Jones County had always lived out in the country. He kept telling Charles on the tape not to talk to us. He said if (Charles) told them anything about what happened they would come back and get them," Ryder said.

"One thing led to another. We went to the site at Shaupeter, where Colley Towing is now. He showed me where it landed and picked him up."

Ryder said no physical evidence of a landing - burn marks or footprints - were found.

He said after the story broke calls came in from across the United States, England and Canada.

"They were pretty well convincing something did happen to them," he said.

Ryder said there were other calls fielded about sighting of a streak of light that night, but only Parker and Hickson reported being taken aboard the space craft.

Very Rare Discovery on Sun Orbiting Spacecraft

It appears that the sun orbiting spacecraft are seeing some bombardment of meteor debris.

Stereo-A Cor2 shows many examples of what appear to be parts of a meteor shower however some images are very perplexing and seems to show Unidentified Flying Objects orbiting the sun.

Especially two cubes and a massive spacecraft streaking through space, leaving an enormous long comet-like tail behind are very unique.
