Mars is coveredwith spooky little grooves, some of which have been attributed to flowing water. Unfortunately, it seems scientists might have been a little off in their understanding of some of Mars’s lines — and it’s potentially a bummer for astrobiologists.
Historically, seasonal dark streaks on the Red Planet have been the source of some debate. Some scientists have suggested that these lines — called recurring slope lineae (RSL) — were caused by once-flowing water on the planet. Others have posited the grooves were created by the flow of something else, such as sand.
But a new study published Monday in Nature Geoscience bolsters the latter idea — that flowing sand and dust from avalanches could have created these dark streaks.
“The RSL (recurring slope lineae) on Mars behave in a similar way to laboratory experiments on Earth,” Planetary Science Institute Senior Scientist Jim McElwaine, a co-author on the paper, said in a statement. “What is still not understood is where the supply of fresh material comes from, though we do have some speculative ideas.”
If Mars’s RSL are indeed formed by sand — not water — that could be a sign that the Red Planet has been dry for a really long time. That doesn’t bode well for astrobiologists and other scientists hoping to find microbes on Mars.
Of course, we have a lot more searching to do before we know what the RSL are for sure. Hopefully we still find tiny traces of life no matter what.

In 2015, scientists announced something incredible: They had strong evidence that there was liquid water flowing on Mars today. The implications were huge for the possibility of alien life and resources for future crewed missions to the Martian surface. Now, all of those hopes have been put on hold by a new study published in Nature Geoscience. Following is a transcript of the video.
These mysterious marks on Mars are at the heart of a giant controversy. They're called recurring slope lineae (RSL).
Scientists first discovered them in 2011 from images taken by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Almost immediately, scientists noticed something puzzling.
RSL have regular seasonal changes. During warm seasons they grow darker and longer. But in cooler seasons they fade away.
In 2015, scientists announced they had a solution. RSL were likely the result of liquid water flowing downhill on Mars. Later reports speculated that RSL may even be a good place for life.
Now, all of that has been called into question.
New evidence adds another mystery to the mix most RSL only occur on slopes that are steeper than 27º. The researchers argue that if RSL were from water then they should appear on shallow slopes as well as steep ones.
They report that instead of water RSL are probably made from falling sand and dust. However, their idea doesn't explain why RSL change with the seasons.
Until we visit these unusual Martian features this mystery will remain one of Mars' best-kept secrets.
The video released by conspiracy theory YouTube channel ikillMasons4fun, appears to show the wreckage of what is alleged to be from a UFO recovered from the notorious Roswell crash site in 1947, according to reports.
Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since in July 1947 the military sensationally announced in a press release it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the desert nearby.
But the following day it retracted the statement, saying it was in fact a damaged US Air Force air balloon.
Witnesses later came forward to say there had been alien bodies within the "crashed craft", which along with the wreckage were then taken to a mysterious top-secret military base.
There have been many theories about what actually happened, but an official government probe into what happened concluded it was a secret spy balloon being tested.
It remains one of the world's biggest conspiracy theories.
Sure, of course. It's the same Santilli's footage already published.
Scott Brando
Although it is a proven hoax, its producer Ray Santilli, 58, insists it was based on “real poor quality” genuine footage he received from the cameraman in the US in 1992.
The alien autopsy film was propelled back into the headlines in September after Spyros Melaris, who was hired by Mr Santilli and film producer Gary Shoefield to make the black and white film, told the story of his involvement in a one-man West End show.
Mr Melaris revealed how the video was produced inside a north London flat, thousands of miles from the secret US base it was purporting to be in.
He explained how the "dead alien" in the 17-minute film, which has been viewed by millions of people across the globe, was created by a sculptor called John Humphreys, who was a special effects expert who had worked on the sets of Dr Who.
The 16mm film was then spliced with an original Pathe newsreel of a 1947 college baseball match in Roswell to help convince experts from Kodak it could be real, he said.
Scott Brando, who runs debunking website ufoofinterest.org, viewed the edited version released by ikillMasons4fun and confirmed it was from the original hoax.
He said: “Sure, of course. It's the same Santilli's footage already published.”
but to the disappointment of alien hunters the 1995 footage was later branded an elaborate hoax.

They even identified its location over Earth, calculated the speed at which it was moving, and compared its brightness favorably to that of Venus. Judging by the angle it was /falling, the agency said they thought it was a natural meteor rather than a piece of ubiquitous space junk, but they noted they couldn't be positive.
An ESA scientist used this image to calculate how fast the meteor was moving.
ESA/NASA
Then Secureteam, which dubs itself "the fastest-growing research outlet and source for data on the alien phenomenon, UFOs and the exposure of those covering them up," decided it was a cover-up, in part arguing that the ESA's speed calculation was incorrect since the video was a time-lapse.
James Oberg, who used to work in mission control at NASA, is used to this sort of approach to UFO sightings, and in a fascinating interview with Atlas Obscura, he explains why space phenomena trip people up. As a hobby, he has traced back decades'-worth of UFO sightings to more mundane explanations, drawing on his professional expertise in space missions.
His time at mission control, he says, not only means he has the skills to cross-reference sightings with agency documents that point to straightforward explanations, but he also has a mindset that's really difficult for Earthlings to develop. After all, everything in space is based on different perceptual cues: There's no gravity, for example, and some reports deal with images taken from the International Space Station, which is hurtling through space at five miles per second. “Our sensory system is functioning absolutely perfectly for Earth conditions,” Oberg told Atlas Obscura. “But we’re still a local civilization. Moving beyond our neighborhood has been visually confusing.”
One example is the dancing lights seen about three minutes into this video filmed from a space shuttle flight. Oberg here points out that given the spacecraft's speed, these spots aren't dancing at all, they're traveling more or less at pace with the shuttle. Oberg writes them off as small pieces of ice or insulation that have detached from the shuttle but are still keeping pace with it.
Sightings of UFOs appear to be on the rise, and now an interactive map can reveal whether 'aliens' have been seen in your area.
The map, created by UFO Stalker based on the MUFON Case Management System, reveals that a total of 83,715 sightings have been reported this year alone - 12 per cent higher than the number of sighting in 2016.
The map allows users to view UFO sighting reports based on location and by date. It then displays UFO symbols on a map of that area, which users can click to view each report.

UFO SIGHTINGS BY NUMBER
Sightings last week: 83
Sightings last month: 358
Sightings last year: 5,372
Total sightings this year: 83,715
The map reveals that in the UK alone, there have been seven reported UFO sightings in November.
On 15 November, one user reported seeing a UFO over Aberdeen.
The report states: 'Standing at my kitchen window I noticed a very bright red and white light flashing every two seconds.
'I instantly knew this was not a passenger plane or helicopter.
'The object itself was traveling directly North. It just looked like a medium brightness star but had an intensely bright white and red light. The white light was stacked on top of the red light and they would pulse on and off every 2 seconds.'
Meanwhile in Thornaby, another person spotted a mysterious object on November 8.

CONSPIRACY, NARCISSISM AND SELF-ESTEEM
Over the course of three online-based studies, researchers at the University of Kent showed strong links between the belief in conspiracy theories and these psychological traits.
The results showed that those people who rated highly on the narcissism scale and who had low self-esteem were more likely to be conspiracy believers.
However, while low self-esteem, narcissism and belief in conspiracies are strongly linked, it is not clear that one - or a combination - causes the other.
But it hints at an interesting new angle to the world of conspiracy and those who reinforce belief.
The report states: 'I went out into my front garden for a cigarette with my husband and looked up at the clouds.
'Above the houses across the street i noticed a very bright, white, intermittent trail and when following the trail to the right noticed a small white glowing spot (orb?) moving in front of the clouds.
'I told my husband to look at it but the trail had disappeared and he wasn't able to see the orb before it disappeared; I'm not certain whether it went into the clouds or just disappeared.'
UFO sightings were less frequent in Australia, where there were only four reports this month.
But the majority of UFO sightings were in the US, where 26 reports have been filed in November.
On 20 November, a report filed in Albuquerque stated: 'I was driving around in the Nob Hill area of Albuquerque. I turned down a side street and saw a triangle shaped craft with lights that went up the side of it.
'It was illuminated so it formed a V-shape. I stopped to pull over and look at it because I thought it was strange. Witnessed it for about 10 seconds before it was hidden behind a tree.
'The airforce base is close by so I assumed it was a military aircraft but haven't seen one like it before.

The interactive map reveals that in Canada, there have been six UFO sightings this month, including in Toronto, Montreal and Manitoba
'My first thought is it was some sort of stealth type plane like b-2 but they don't appear to have that type of light formation at night.'
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, told MailOnline: 'UFO Stalker is a brilliant visual guide to the location of UFO sightings, and shows the sheer scaleof this phenomena over the last few years.
'The downside of such a map is the quality of the sightings in its data base, these should be carefully filtered if anyone really wants to establish geomagnetic or other links with UFO activity.
'Clusters of sightings might for example be caused by increased media activity in an area, or a bright meteor or other mundane phenomena could also trigger a wave of UFO sightings.
'Nonetheless, this is a handy way of presenting UFO data and is very helpful in helping pin down the weird things seen in our skies.'
The UFO Sighting map follows another map released last week that showed how reports have steadily grown in the US over the last two decades, hitting a mid-summer peak each year.
The map of reported UFO sightings in the US was created by Data Solutions Engineer Adam Crahen of the Data Duo, using data from Kaggle UFO sightings.

There's little doubt that the internet has played a role in the growth of UFO reports in recent years, though most can be explained by natural or human-caused phenomena.
The image of UFOs in America is often associated with sparsely populated rural settings; a mysterious object hovering over a field of crops, or crashing in a remote expanse of desert land, likely fueled by the famous 1947 Roswell crash in New Mexico.
But, the map shows these reports are actually concentrated in major cities and dense population hubs, making places such as New York and the surrounding metropolitan area hotspots for UFO sightings, along with southern and central California.
The map was created by Data Solutions Engineer Adam Crahen of the Data Duo , using data from Kaggle UFO sightings. Click each green circle to see the details of the report, including a description of the sighting and the shape of the UFO
One account, from Fresno, claims: 'Brilliant flashing light giving off a star affect traveling at an incredible rate of speed, from north to south.'
Another report, from September 2, 1995, says: 'Two males leaving a concert in Central Park witness strange moving light close to E. horizon. Moved very precisely, turned, vanished.'
The Great Lakes region also had a high concentration of UFO sightings.
In one report from Ohio, a worker even claimed he could not account for half an hour of his night after a bizarre encounter.
CIA RELEASES ITS OWN 'X-FILES'
Last year, the CIA released a glimpse into its own set of 'X-Files,' a small compilation of documents pulled from its expansive UFO collection, dating back to the 1940s.
A reported UFO sighting over Minnville, Oregon, is pictured above
The agency said that these documents appeal to both skeptics and believers – the Scullys and Mulders of the world – who seek to prove scientific explanations, or confirm the existence of extraterrestrial activity.
One of the documents among the CIA's 'X-Files' is from East Germany in 1952, where agents were called to investigate what witnesses described as a 'huge flying pan'.
The object was said to have a diameter of about 15 meters, according to the document.
Similar flying saucers were also spotted in North Africa and Spain, the report said.
'The picture [of the object] shows a diagonal stripe of diminishing width and lighter in shade than the sky over the dark bulk of a building cornice,' it was noted.
Included with some of the documents were three pictures of the alleged extraterrestrials.
One of the photos - taken by British student Alex Birch in 1962 - claimed to show a group of flying saucers flying over the city of Sheffield in the UK.
Also contained in the files is the case in Socorro, New Mexico in 1964, when police officer Lonnie Zamora spotted a large flame rise from the ground and pierce the sky above a remote patch of desert.
Upon investigation, he found a shiny object the size of a sedan perched on the hilltop, which was oval in shape and aluminium in color.
The object then began to rise into the air and then sped away from him over the mountains and disappeared.
An explanation for this case has never been determined.
The map also organizes the sightings by month, year, and day, showing when the reports were most frequent.
Most sightings appear to occur in the summer months, with night-time in July being the most popular.
But, these unusual reports have occurred all over the country, and at all different times of the year.
The image of UFOs in America is often associated with sparsely populated rural settings. But the map shows they often occur in major cities.

'I saw a large fireball pass over my house at about 1000 feet – no noise, traveling about 15 mph,' one person, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, claimed on December 25.
Another, from Tillamook Oregon, said they saw 'One mother ship with four smaller destinct [sic] satellite objects moving randomly,' on January 18, 2009
There are countless practical explanations for strange lights appearing in the sky or even in photos captured in space.
Weather is often to blame, or phenomena such as meteor showers and aircraft tests.
And, often, it's just a trick of the light.
Of bizarre UFO sightings spotted around the International Space Station, for example, a Nasa spokesperson explained in the past, 'Reflections from station windows, the spacecraft structure itself or lights from Earth commonly appear as artifacts in photos and videos from the orbiting laboratory.'
The European Space Agency (ESA) released a video showing the object entering Earth’s atmosphere.
In it, a bright light is seen flashing in the distance from the International Space Station.
However, notorious alien conspiracy theorist Tyler Glocker disputed the scientists’ conclusion.
He said: “I don’t think it’s a meteorite at all. What many people may not realise if that this video is a time lapse.

CAPTIVATING: A bright light is seen flashing above the Earth in the footage
“You’re seeing the Earth spinning at a high rate of speed and we see this flash of light coming from space.
“When you account how fast the Earth would have actually been moving, had this not been sped up, it would have been moving much, much slower.
But critics have rejected the claims.
Scott Brando, who runs debunking website ufoofinterest.org, told Express.co.uk: "It was a meteor seen and confirmed by Italian ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli."
He compared the meteor to clips of the Perseid meteor shower in 2011 to try and prove his wacky theory.
“I don’t think it’s a meteorite at all. What many people may not realise if that this video is a time lapse”
Alien conspiracy theorist Tyler Glocker
He added: “It’s a short, stubby object that looks nothing like the other meteor here. We can see this discharge, the energy coming from the back of it.”
“Speeds that are slower than even the slowest meteorites.”
Detlev Koschny, co-manager of the Near-Earth Object (NEO) division of ESA’s Space Situational Awareness team, picked apart his theory.
He said: “It looks like a bright meteor, or fireball. one can see the fireball illuminating the clouds from above, so it must have been close to them – and close to the Earth’s limb.
The unknown bright object flashing across the sky at Heathrow Airport.
Youtube/AIRLIVE net
An extraordinary footage has captured a bright object flashing across the sky at London's Heathrow Airport, just before a passenger plane was about to land.
Aviation website Airlive shared the video suggesting that the object is a shooting star. Writing on the social media site, Airlive said: "Look at that amazing shooting star our cam just caught in the sky of Heathrow Airport!"
The video was soon shared widely on Facebook and Twitter, but some disagreed with the given description. A Twitter user Paul Mottershead said: "That was no shooting star. More like a large meteorite." Others described the sighting something 'awesome' and 'superb".
It is not yet known whether the mysterious object is space debris, a meteor, UFO, or something else.
A visiting fellow of the University of Southampton who specialises in studying space debris, Clemens Rumpf told Daily Mail: "My hunch is that this was a large meteor about one metre in diameter. These events occur harmlessly multiple times a year but can be spectacular when caught on camera."
Another explanation for it could be that the object was a piece of space debris falling to Earth. Reportedly, over 500,000 large pieces of man-made debris, or 'space junk', were tracked by Nasa and up to 150 million smaller untraceable objects are believed to be in orbit around the Earth.
So, that's quite a possible option. That being said, conspiracy theorists on the other hand recently said that they believe the astronauts are hiding some information after footage from the international space station showed a fiery object racing towards the Earth's atmosphere. The footage was taken by Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli.
"The ISS crew member has said he believes that the object could be space debris," Daily Mail reported. However, both the space agency and alien enthusiasts have rejected the given explanation.
What you see here is the salvage of the so-calledRoswellUFO crash.
This salvage included plates which had handprints made of metal and these handprints have six fingers.
Secondly we have these so-called strangesymbolson this piece of metal. These symbols are Greek letters and spell the word "Eleftheria" which means freedom.
According to this very evidence, the aliens had six fingers and spoke Greek.

MAINSTREAM ASTRONOMERS NOW DISCUSSING THE POSSIBILITY THAT OUMUAMUA IS A SPACESHIP
MAINSTREAM ASTRONOMERS NOW DISCUSSING THE POSSIBILITY THAT OUMUAMUA IS A SPACESHIP
A mainstream astronomer says on Reddit that Oumuamua is not your normal space rock.
"Astronomer here! I will never say this lightly, but we are, swear to God, actually discussing with some seriousness right now what are the odds that this was actually a spaceship. Which I 100% assure you has never happened before in my memory with seriousness.
Basically, the dimensions of this thing being so much longer than it is tall, combined with the no dust part, are both highly irregular details. Not so irregular there's no natural way to explain them, but irregular enough that this is definitely not your normal space rock. And unfortunately we are not really going to get any more new data on this space rock, so I guess we'll be speculating about this for the rest of my professional career.
The issue though is it is tumbling, and no thermal emission was detected. But there's no way that doesn't mean it's the dead hull of an alien spacecraft from millions of years ago, my one colleague is arguing, and I'm arguing that if you had computer intelligence type beings perhaps they'd go to stasis for the millions of years the journey takes to wherever they were going (and in my scenario, they were just using us as a tidal slingshot sorta like how we slingshot by planets to save on spacecraft fuel).
But I'm sad if it was aliens that the aliens didn't want to hang out.
(To be clear, it was most likely a space rock. But right now I believe we can't say for sure if it wasn't a space rock based on data.)
There is some potential Hubble and Spitzer telescope data in the works, so we may get a few more details about 'Oumuamua in coming months!
Residents in Alabama were left baffled last week when a loud boom resounded across much of the state.
The boom, nicknamed 'Bama Boom', has left experts stumped, with suggested causes ranging from supersonic aircrafts to meteors exploding in the atmosphere.
This isn't the first time that the mysterious sound has been heard, and incidents are becoming more frequent according to some reports.
This year alone, similar noises have been reported 64 times this year, in locations including Michigan, Lapland, St Ives, Swansea and Yorkshire.
Scroll down for a full list of booms in 2017
Mysterious booms have been reported 64 times this year, in locations including Michigan, Lapland, St Ives, Swansea and Yorkshire. Incidents are becoming more frequent according to some reports.
WHAT COULD THEY BE?
In 2017 alone, 64 booms have been heard worldwide.
The cause of most of the booms remains a mystery, although several explanations have been suggested.
1) Sonic booms
A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound – such as supersonic aircrafts.
Sonic booms generate significant amounts of sound energy, sounding like an explosion to the human ear.
2) Military exercises
Many unexplained loud noises can be put down to military training, either at Army or Naval bases or in remote areas used for such exercises.
3) Controlled explosions
A controlled explosion is a method for detonating or disabling a suspected explosive device, such as bags left at train stations.
4) Unusual weather
Many loud noises link back to unusual weather events, such as electrical storms or thunder storms.
5) Meteors
Large meteors passing above Earth often produce shock waves that can be heard as a sonic boom.
6) Sound amplified from aircraft
Some have suggested that the sound was due to inversion - a phenomenon that occurs when a layer of warm air sits over a layer of cooler air, magnifying the sound of an aircraft miles away.
7) Aliens
Some conspiracy theorists claim that the mysterious booms are noises created by aliens - although there is no evidence to support this.
Alabama, November 14
Cause: Unknown, suggested explanations include a sonic boom from an aircraft or a meteorite
The Birmingham National Weather Service tweeted: 'Loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake.'
The service suggested that the sound was either caused by a sonic boom from aircraft, or a meteorite from the Leonid shower.
But Nasa has since cast doubt on these explanations.
Speaking to ABC 3340, Bill Cooke, head of Nasa's Meteoroid Environment Office, said that the boom could have been caused by a supersonic aircraft, a ground explosion, or a bolide - a large meteor that explodes in the atmosphere unrelated to the Leonid shower.
While the noise was picked up by the US Geological Survey, data suggests that the boom wasn't the result of an earthquake.
The boom may have been caused by a military flight by a supersonic jet, although the US Air Force is yet to confirm this.
The Bama Boom is just one of many mysterious booms heard worldwide this year.
Idaho, November 15
Cause: Unknown
The day after the boom in Alabama, a similar noise was heard in Idaho.
Multiple people reported hearing a loud boom over the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley around 23:00.
Many of the reports described the sound as being similar to a sonic boom, although its cause and location remain unclear.
Cairns, October 10
Cause: Unknown, suggested explanations include a meteorite, a gas bottle explosion or military plane
On October 10, a boom was heart over Cairns, Queensland that had the city baffled.
While the noise in Alabama was picked up by the US Geological Survey (graph pictured), data suggests that the boom wasn't the result of an earthquake
Residents' theories ranged from a meteorite to a gas bottle explosion or military plane.
A FA-18 Hornet plane was heard flying over Cairns the previous night, but no jets were flying on the night when the 'explosion' happened.
The Birmingham National Weather Service tweeted: 'Loud boom heard: we do not see anything indicating large fire/smoke on radar or satellite; nothing on USGS indicating an earthquake'
Abergavenny, May 11
Cause: Unknown
Residents in Abergavenny, Wales, were also shocked after they heard a series of booms on May 11.
James Spann, AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist tweeted that no explanation had been provided by USGS, NOAA or EMA
Speaking to the Abergavenny Chronicle, one resident said: 'It nearly gave me a heart attack it was that loud. At first I thought it was shotgun blast or a firework, but it was way too loud for that. It sounded more like a tank going off.
'My husband said it was probably mini meteors colliding with the earth, but have you ever heard such nonsense?'
Again, the source of the Welsh booms have remained unsolved.
But other booms this year have had explanations behind them.
Other booms have been known to be caused by secret military missions. On May 7, a boom rattled Central Florida, caused by a military mission ending at the Kennedy Space Centre (stock image)
Lapland, November 17
Cause: Falling meteor
On November 17, a boom in Lapland was caused by a fireball from a falling meteor.
Footage showed a bright light in the sky over Inari in Finland - but the flash was so intense it was also seen in Russia's Kola Peninsula and in northern Norway.
Stargazers reported seeing the sky 'light up like day' for a few seconds alongside a loud noise as the space rock plummeted towards Earth.
Eyre Peninsula, October 27
Cause: Falling meteor
On October 27, another boom was heard over Eyre Peninsula in Australia, as a bright blue meteor shot across the sky.
On November 17, a boom in Lapland was caused by a fireball from a falling meteor. Footage showed a bright light in the sky over Inari in Finland - but the flash was so intense it was also seen in Russia's Kola Peninsula and in northern Norway
The loud bangs weren't caused by the fireball hitting Earth, and instead were caused by the change in pressure as the meteor soared through the air.
Speaking to News.com.au, Renee Sayers, a spokeswoman from the Desert Fireball Network, explained: 'The shock wasn't from it hitting the ground; It is like a sonic boom shock, a pressure shock.'
Central Florida, May 7
Cause: Supersonic flight testing
Other booms have been known to be caused by secret military missions.
On May 7, a boom rattled Central Florida, caused by a military mission ending at the Kennedy Space Centre.
The US Air Force tweeted: 'The Air Force #X37B #OTV4 has returned from orbit and landed safely at @NASAKennedy.'
Can YOU work out what the sound coming from the sky is?

People have spent thousands of years pondering the existence of the Lost City of Atlantis, ever since Plato wrote about the fictional island of half-humans, half-Gods in the dialogues Timaeus and Critias.
While these musings have largely been sequestered to the realms of fantasy, new discoveries in the Antarctic could shed light on the possibility of ancient Utopian civilisations.
A scientific theory put forward in the 1950s by American history expert, Professor Charles A. Hapgood, suggests that thousands of years ago the icy tundra may have been home to an ancient and mysterious civilisation.

The theory of crustal displacement posits the Earth’s entire crust shifts every 20,000 to 30,000 years and that only 11,600 years ago large parts of Antarctica – a continent we now know as icy and barren – were ice free.
Hapgood looks to the Piri Reis world map, drawn 500 years ago by the Ottoman admiral of the same name, to reconcile his theory with evidence.
The map is thought to show the west coast of Africa, the east coast of South America and the northern coast of Antarctica, with all land masses totally devoid of ice.
Bilkent University
US Air Force Lt. Colonel Harold Z Ohlmeyer wrote to Hapgood reinforcing his theory:
The geographical detail shown in the lower part of the map agrees very remarkably with the results of the seismic profile made across the top of the ice-cap by the Swedish-British Antarctic Expedition of 1949.
This indicates the coastline had been mapped before it was covered by the ice-cap. This part of Antarctica [is] ice free. The ice-cap in this region is now about a mile thick.
Conspirators believe both Hapgood’s theory of crustal displacement and that much of the south pole was free of ice – and also the location of The Lost City of Atlantis.

In 1995, Graham Hancock publish a study, Fingerprints of the Gods, claiming that crustal displacement in 10,450 BC had destroyed an advanced, ancient civilisation, the remains of which now lie beneath Antarctica.
Hancock muses the descendants of said civilisation went on to build the Aztec, Mayan and Egyptian empires.
This postulation rings true when compared to Native American mythology, which traces their ancestors back to the enigmatic white island in the South, Aztlán, which was destroyed by natural disaster.
While this is undeniably fascinating, scientists dispute the theory of crustal displacement stating that, in effect, the Earth’s crust would have to move at 1,000 mph for the timings to add up, thus wiping out flora, fauna – and humanity itself.

Despite this, dreamers, conspiracy theorists and believers are convinced Atlantis – a city that was born in fiction – lies underneath the Antarctic.
Presumably the U.S. government are responsible, or aliens, or the lizard race that secretly rules the Earth – put your theory on a postcard…
It is a dark night and the landscape leaps out of the pitch blackness into the beams of the car’s headlights, everything else just an indistinct blur of greys and half-glimpsed shapes, perhaps frosted by moonlight, perhaps not. The trees crowd around the road in the passing light as well, seeming to reach their flickering tendrils and fingers outwards overhead, and there is a sense that anything could be crouched or lurking out in the gloom out there beyond this illuminated patch. Then up ahead something lurches, scurries, or skitters out of the murk, something the likes of which you have never seen disgorged from the forest into your lights and possibly your nightmares. As your mind struggles to make sense of what you have just seen and comprehend it, the thing is gone just as suddenly as it appeared, swallowed back up by the night. What was it? Where did it go? You don’t know, and there was no way for you to have possibly taken a picture.
Such reports are commonplace in cryptozoology, sightings made by people driving along at night minding their own business are numerous to the point that it is almost cliché. There was a time when such chance encounters with strange mystery creatures along the remote roadways of our world would have been nothing more than a scary yarn, with nothing to show for it, and confined to our imaginations, yet in more modern times the increasing use of dashboard mounted cameras in vehicles of all kinds has brought some of these strange, passing sightings into the light and captured them on video for all to see. No longer are such reports the realm of mere pure speculation, doubt, and wonder.
Perhaps one of the more well-known such pieces of mysterious footage was captured in 2009 in Lumpkin County, Georgia, in the United States. In the footage a Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office deputy is driving along a lonely road in the Frogtown area at night bantering back and forth with a local named Mary Scott, who was along for the ride as a part of a Citizens Law Enforcement Academy program. As the two make their way through a dark landscape illuminated only by the vehicle’s headlights something runs across the road in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. It is hard to see in the unenhanced version of the footage, and can take several viewings to catch, but it is something large and dark in color, seemingly bipedal, and very fleet of foot, and it is odd enough to elicit a shout of surprise from the deputy and genuine amazement from Scott, who also saw it. The two then turn the car around to go back and look for whatever it was, and Scott would later say of the odd encounter:
We were going about 55 mph on a curvy road. It was really late-after midnight, I think. We hadn’t passed any other cars, and this thing came out of nowhere. The officer hit the brakes and we both jumped out. We looked on both sides of the road but didn’t see anything, and we looked at each other kind-of like, ‘You saw that, didn’t you? I saw that.’
The officer can be seen in the footage getting out of the car and shining his flashlight around into the wilderness, but they are unable to figure out where the thing went or just what exactly it is they had just seen. The two can be heard speculating that it might just be some teenagers messing around, but they don’t seem to really believe that, and they continue to express bewilderment. They would later take a look at the dash cam footage they had captured and that was when things got decidedly more mysterious. The bizarre figure indeed seems to run on two legs, is quite fast, and does not appear to be of human proportions, although it is only visible for a fraction of a second. Upon seeing the strange footage Scott became convinced that they had witnessed something truly out of the ordinary, saying of the review of the footage “We were both just shocked. It was really tall, and it really looked like the pictures you’ve seen of Bigfoot.” Bigfoot or not, the reactions of the two witnesses certainly seem genuine and they seem to be convinced that they saw something weird.
When the footage was uncovered and posted on the Internet it immediately went viral, and there was intense speculation on what it could be. Was it a misidentified known animal, Bigfoot, a hoax? Debate and discussion swarmed about the footage, and all manner of cryptozoologists, paranormal investigators, and curiosity seekers came pouring into the area, to the point that Sheriff Stacy Jarrard decided to launch his own investigation into the strange sighting. Jarrard claims that he went interviewing residents of the area looking for any helpful testimony and apparently found it in two students at North Georgia College & State University, who he claims acted very nervous in his presence and allegedly eventually admitted that one of them had dressed up in a gorilla suit and prowled about as a prank on the night in question. It seemed like case closed, or was it?
Skeptics of these claims say that no hoaxers have officially stepped forward to publically claim responsibility for such a prank, and the picture that Jarrard said he took of the boys with the actual gorilla suit has yet to materialize, with Jarrard supposedly refusing all requests to release the elusive photo. It has also been pointed out that the area was very remote and that no one lived in the immediate vicinity, making it odd that the boys would be out there trouncing about in their suit on the off chance that someone would actually happen by. It also seems rather ill-advised to do so in the first place, as in this day and age and with armed people running around and hunters about it seems like wandering around the forest in a gorilla suit is just asking for trouble. I can see using a suit to make one’s own fake video, but the deputy was seemingly not in on this, and walking around pranking unknown people with a gorilla suit in Bigfoot country being the death wish it is, it seems foolish at best. Does anyone really do this?
Adding to the whole odd affair, a 2011 Animal Planetdocumentary group also investigated and confirmed that no teenagers had lived anywhere near the area at the time, making it strange that they should be there, and interestingly when other sheriff’s department personnel were interviewed none of them had any knowledge of Jarrard’s supposed investigation. It seems the only source we have for any of Jarrard’s “investigation” is Jarrard himself, which is a bit suspicious and has led to the idea that he is the one pulling a fast one, possibly to keep people from coming in to snoop about. A BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) statement on the matter reads:
None of the other sheriffs had heard about this story that Jarrard told to a reporter. It seems he came up with the story to quell any fear that local people might have about a monster in the woods, and to prevent hunters from going to look for one.
As far as anyone knows, the two boys might not even exist, and if they do the only one they have admitted a hoax to is Jarrard himself. There has also been quite a bit of analysis done on the video clip by those who claim that the creature seen in the footage seems to be moving much faster and more fluidly than what would typically be expected of a teenager in a gorilla suit, with one estimate saying the thing appears to move at about 10 meters (40 feet) in 1.4 seconds. However, obviously this is hard to determine because whatever it is can only very briefly be seen, and even with enhancements made to the footage it is indistinct, blurry and undeniably hard to make out. It is certainly dark, probably bipedal, and man-sized or larger, but it is difficult to glean much else from the video, meaning that the footage will remain inconclusive, with those watching it divided as to what exactly it shows. You can see the dash cam footage here, with enhancements at the end.
A very similar piece of weird dashboard camera footage that has made the rounds emerged in 2016, and comes to us from Russia’s icy Kazhakstan border, in an area between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains called the Republic of Bashkortostan. The video features two men driving at night along a snowy road in what appears to be a rather isolated and remote area, and they are chatting away in Russian about, well I’m not exactly sure as I cannot speak Russian but it seems like just friendly banter. Around 45 seconds into the video they are noticeably shocked when a large figure lumbers across the road ahead right into the beams of the car’s headlights.
The two startled men chatter away in the universal language of befuddled shouts of amazement and fear, and frantically stop the car and reverse to see if they can figure out what the strange creature was, but whatever it is they saw is gone by then. The witnesses claim that the area they were in is very remote, the weather had been inhospitable and frigid at the time, and that it would be unlikely that someone would have been out there pulling pranks on such a night. They have also dismissed the idea that they may have seen a bear or some wild animal, with driver Vadim Gilmanov stating:
I mean it could have been someone’s cruel prank. But on the other hand, who else could dash out so quickly in the middle of the night? In the middle of nowhere.
As with the Lumpkin footage the creature, hoaxer, or whatever it is, is visible only very briefly, and is not clearly defined. It could be practically anything, but the clip is oddly intriguing nonetheless. You can see it here. Staying with the bizarre humanoid theme we come to what is perhaps one of the most talked about pieces of footage in recent days, this time not from a car’s dash cam but from a helmet cam worn by a biker in Indonesia in 2017.
The footage comes from the helmet camera of one of a group of off-road motocross bikers tearing along a dirt road surrounded thick jungle and high grass near Banda Aceh, north of Sumatra Island. At one point one of the riders loses control of his bike and falls, and it soon becomes obvious why, as it appears that a peculiar figure has scurried out of the wilderness onto the road to startle the rider into crashing his bike. The rest of the bikers slow down to see that the unidentified creature is short, no more than 4 or 5 feet tall, bald, and half naked, holding some sort of pole or spear, and looks to be a humanoid of some kind, but before anyone can get a good look it sprints off at a surprising speed.
A still from the strange footage showing the humanoid
The group immediately gives chase on their motorcycles but the humanoid runs along the road very quickly and then loses them by veering off into the high grassland, prompting the pursuers to stop their bikes and look for it on foot but all they can find is the strange pole it had been carrying discarded upon the ground. The creature itself is nowhere to be seen despite all frantic attempts to locate it by the puzzled witnesses. The strange footage set the Internet on fire when it was first released, baffling all those who saw it. What was this diminutive little humanoid and where did it come from? No one really knows, but there have been theories. One is that this could be actual footage of an Indonesian cryptid hairy hominid called the Orang Pendek, which is reported from Sumatra and is also claimed to be only around 3 to 5 feet tall, but the lack of any apparent body hair at all on the subject of the footage makes it look more like a human than a hairy ape man of any sort.
Considering its similarities to a human being and its small stature, there has also been the idea that this could be a member of a previously thought to be a lost tribe of mysterious pygmies called the Mante, who are only known through two that were supposedly captured in the 17th century to be presented to the Sultan. There are other tribes present in the region as well, although none that really resemble what was seen in the footage. Of course there has also been the idea that this was all a hoax, but in the end despite millions of views and constant discussion, debate, and analysis of the footage it remains a total mystery. You can see it here.
The Orang Pendek
Whatever it was or wherever it went, I’m sure it wanted its stick back. Speaking of that stick, one thing I wonder about with this case is what happened to it? It seems to me that this is a major piece of evidence that was actually retrieved and could hold profound clues as to what or who we see in the footage. If the design and any markings on the stick were consistent with other tribes of the area, then that would pretty much settle everything, and if it is a new kind of pygmy or hominid then this artifact could offer all sorts of interesting insights, yet I cannot find any information at all as to what has become of it or if it was ever seriously studied. So where did the stick go? Did the bikers keep it? Did they just throw it away? It seems to be just as big a mystery as the little humanoid itself.
Adding to all of the dash cam videos of purported hairy humanoids is one that is purported to show a mysterious canid creature of some sort roaming about in South Texas. In 2008, Texas Sheriff deputy Brandon Riedel was out in his patrol car training a new deputy in DeWitt County in a rural area near the city of Cuero when they came across a bizarre creature trotting along the side of the road near a fence line. The mysterious animal looks to be a canine of some sort, and has short front legs with longer back legs, a hairless body, a long, thin snout, and a skinny, rat-like tail. Reidel would say of the bizarre sighting:
I’ve been patrolling these back roads for a long time and I never run across anything like this. We were out checking fence lines and we came around the corner and we saw this running down the road. You need to record something like this because it’s not every day you find something that looks like this running around out in the middle of the county. It just doesn’t look like your average coyote or dog or anything.
A still from the Cuero Chupacabras dash cam video
The sighting and the footage generated a huge amount of interest at the time, particularly since the area where it was taken was going through a spate of sightings of strange, hairless dog-like creatures roaming the region that had gained the nickname “The Cuero Chupacabras,” which were said to sometimes kill pets or livestock and frighten people at night. There has been a lot of speculation as to what the creature in the dashcam footage and the Cureo Chupacabras could be, including that they are just coyotes or dogs with some skin condition such as mange, which can cause the hair to fall out to dramatically alter their appearance, or that they are hybrids of coyotes, wolves, and dogs or even aliens or really Chupacabras. Whatever the thing is in this footage, it is certainly creepy and a bit unsettling as well in a way. You can see it featured in a news report here.
It seems that as more and more people use cameras and the technology becomes more readily available we can expect more of such pieces of mysterious footage. After all there are fewer and fewer excuses for people to use the old excuse of “if only I’d had a camera.” Almost everything we witness today can now be captured in photos and on videos, and there are fewer ways for these mysteries to escape being seen and analyzed by the masses. There are few shadows to hide in anymore. Vehicles are not much different, as more and more utilize dash cams to catch everything that happens on the road. This might not be the best way to capture video evidence of strange creatures, since the very nature of these circumstances makes the sightings fleeting at best, and it is perhaps no surprise that by the time the vehicle turns around to get a better look the creature is long gone, yet it certainly does add a tool to the photographic chronicles of the world of the mysterious and will no doubt keep us wondering.
