Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

Mystery of Three-Fingered Peruvian Mummies: ETs or Humans?
A team of St. Petersburg geneticists have brought tissue samples of the alien creature with an elongated skull and only three fingers and toes, to Russia to try to break its genome.
The mysterious mummy was found in a tomb near the Nazca Lines in southern Peru in early-2017.
According to preliminary analysis, the mummy, named Maria, found in a tomb near the Nazca Lines in southern Peru, dates back to about 5th century A.D., about a millennium before the discovery of America.
The analysis also found that Maria “is a humanoid being, meaning that she also has 23 chromosomes like us.”
“Right now we are making a detailed analysis to see if the shape of the position of all the chromosomes, of all the amino acids, coincides with ours,” Russian National Research University professor Konstantin Korotkov, said.
The mummy’s rib structure is very different from that of a human being. Keel-shaped in its upper part, the rib cage consists of a handful of semicircular ribs. Its unusual shape has helped scientists carefully study the mummy’s internal organs.
"We clearly see the contours of the trachea and the bronchi, of the heart and its chambers; we can even see the shape of the valves. We can also see quite clearly the contours of the diaphragm, the liver and the spleen," radiologist Natalia Zaloznaya said.
The scientists have even managed to find out that the white powder the alien civilization used to mummify their dead is cadmium chloride – a chemical whose antibacterial effect has kept Maria preserved.
All set to break the mysterious creature’s DNA code, the Russian scientists plan to work closely with their Peruvian colleagues. They even want to seek permission to bring the mummy to St. Petersburg.
Mummy’s Daughter and Tiny “Verdants”
Besides Maria, the St. Petersburg scientists have also been analyzing the genome of another mummy found in Peru. While Maria was an adult woman, the other one – Vavita – was nine months old when she died. The researchers think that the two could have been mother and child.
Konstantin Korotkov said that his Peruvian colleagues had shown him four more mummies, 70 centimeters each, whom they called “Verdants.” For some strange reason, one carbon dating analysis made in the US said that they were 6,500 years old, while another said they died about 4,000 years ago.
“Each of the little mummies has two arms, two legs, a head, a pair of eyes and a mouth. Tomographic scans reveal their skeletons. The tissue has biological nature and their chemical composition indicates that they are humans. Their DNA features 23 pairs of chromosomes, just like we have. All the four of them are males, each with a Y-chromosome. They appear human but they are not. Their anatomic structure is different,” Korotkov explained.
He added that the 70cm males have three fingers and their skulls are elongated at the back of the head. The nasal cavity is missing and superciliary arches are not pronounced.
“Most surprisingly, the mouth cavities are there but the lower jaws are not flexible and present a single whole with the rest of the skull.
When asked who these “little men” really were, Korotkov said it was hard to tell.
“They could be extraterrestrials or bio robots,” he added. “As for the 70cm creatures I’m not sure, but Maria and Vavita could have been representatives of a certain race which had possibly reached a stage of advancement much earlier than we did. Maybe thousands of years earlier.”
He added that all these members of that advanced race had probably perished as a result of either some great flood or from a comet hit.
"A handful of those who survived met savage tribes of prehistoric men and taught them handicrafts and farming. They mated with local women. They were three-fingered and this genetic feature could make itself evident in future generations,” Korotkov continued.
He didn’t rule out that they could have live separately from the rest and reproduced with one another resulting in genetic degeneration, such as the three unnaturally long fingers.
“By the way, three-fingered creatures can be seen on petroglyphic drawings found in Peru,” Korotkov noted.

Uit DNA-onderzoek is gebleken dat de vreemde mummies die vorig jaar in Peru zijn gevonden, niet menselijk zijn. Dat beweert althans professor Konstantin Korotkov van de ITMO University in Sint-Petersburg.
Eén van de mummies, genaamd Maria, werd begin 2017 ontdekt door een team onder leiding van de Mexicaanse journalist Jaime Maussan.
In een korte documentaire over de ontdekking vestigde de groep de aandacht op de vreemd gevormde schedel en lange vingers.
Ander wezen
Dr. Korotkov zei indertijd dat het geen vervormingen waren, maar dat we hier te maken hebben met een ‘ander wezen, een andere humanoïde’.
Het team van Korotkov heeft naar eigen zeggen genetisch onderzoek gedaan naar weefsel dat uit de mummies is gehaald.
Ook een tweede mummie, genaamd Vavita, is onderzocht, meldt het Russische persbureau Sputnik.
Buitenaardsen of cyborgs
Dr. Korotkov zei dat de lichamen dateren van de vijfde eeuw na Christus en van buitenaardsen of cyborgs kunnen zijn.
“Ze zien eruit als mensen, maar dat zijn het niet,” zei hij. “Hun anatomische structuur is anders.”
De wetenschapper voegde toe dat de structuur van de ribben anders is dan die van mensen, aangezien de botten in het bovenste gedeelte kielvormig zijn.
Eerder
Door de ongewone vorm van de ribbenkast konden onderzoekers de organen tot in detail bestuderen.
“Maria en Vavita behoorden mogelijk toe aan een ras dat al veel eerder dan wij een bepaald ontwikkelingsstadium heeft bereikt,” aldus Korotkov. “Misschien wel duizenden jaren eerder.”
Rotstekeningen
Hij denkt dat het ras grotendeels is uitgeroeid als gevolg van een zondvloed of een komeet.
Korotkov merkte op dat dit soort drievingerige wezens ook op rotstekeningen in Peru zijn gezien.

Wetenschappers hebben drie nieuwe snelle radioflitsen opgepikt uit de ruimte. Eén daarvan is de helderste die ooit is waargenomen.
Snelle radioflitsen zijn buitengewoon lastig waar te nemen in het heelal. Het zijn krachtige radiogolven die al na enkele milliseconden weer verdwijnen. Niemand weet hoe ze ontstaan.
Sommige theorieën hebben betrekking op neutronensterren en uitbarstingen, terwijl er ook een theorie is die stelt dat ze worden geproduceerd door buitenaardsen die interstellaire reizen maken.
Uitsluiten
“Dat zou natuurlijk prachtig zijn, maar we moeten eerst alle plausibele theorieën uitsluiten,” zei astronoom Danny Price van de Universiteit van Californië – Berkeley.
“Er zijn voor zover bekend geen astronomische bronnen die zulke heldere radioflitsen genereren,” zei professor Avi Loeb van Hardvard.
“Radioflitsen zijn bijvoorbeeld tientallen miljarden keer helderder dan pulsars,” voegde hij toe.
Nieuwe
Tot dusver zijn er nog maar 33 van deze radioflitsen ontdekt. Onderzoekers hebben nu een paar nieuwe gespot.
Eén van de nieuwe flitsen, FRB 180301, is op 1 maart jongstleden opgepikt door de Parkes-telescoop in Australië.
Eerste
Het is de eerste radioflits die is ontdekt door een team van Breakthrough Listen, een organisatie die speurt naar intelligent leven buiten de aarde.
“Tijdens onze waarnemingen op 1 maart hebben we een mysterieus fenomeen waargenomen dat bekendstaat als een snelle radioflits,” lichtte dr. Price toe.
“A German newspaper recently published an interview with George Klein, famous German engineer and aircraft expert, describing the experimental construction of ‘flying saucers’ carried out by him from 1941 to 1945.”(source)
Exotic technology has been around for a long time, and so have the agencies within the Department of Defense that use it. Just imagine what type of technology the NSA — an intelligence agency whose existence was denied until the mid-1960s — was using in the 1950s. Then there’s the National Reconnaissance Office, which was founded in 1960 but remained completely secret for 30 years. Secret technologies have been wrapped up in the Black Budget and Special Access Programs (SAPs) for years, and many of these SAPS remain unacknowledged by anybody within the government. They’re exempt from standard reporting requirements to Congress.

When it comes to exotic aerial technology, there is no shortage of information. For examine, in the mid-1920s, Townsend Brown discovered that gravitational mass and electric charge are coupled. He found that when a capacitor is charged to a high voltage, it moves toward its positive pole. This became known as the “Biefeld-Brown” effect, which, like many new concepts today that challenge longheld belief systems (that then become scientific dogma), was opposed by conventional-minded physicists of his time.
As Theodore C. Loder, a Professor Emeritus of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire, states:
The Pearl Harbor Demonstration. Around 1953, Brown conducted a demonstration for military top brass. He flew a pair of 3-foot diameter discs around a 50-foot course tethered to a central pole. Energized with 150,000 volts and emitting ions from their leading edge, they attained speeds of several hundred miles per hour. The subject was thereafter classified. Project Winterhaven. Brown submitted a proposal to the Pentagon for the development of a Mach 3 disc shaped electrogravitic fighter craft. Drawings of its basic design are shown in one of his patents. They are essentially large-scale versions of his tethered test discs.
German Flying Saucers
Here is an authentic image/story of a large UFO hovering over L.A., which was witnessed by 1 million people. Dubbed the “Battle of Los Angeles,” it was an event that showed us how the U.S. military was learning to lie about UFOs, five years prior to the Roswell Incident.
During World War Two, multiple strange sightings occurred, of disc-shaped objects travelling at incomprehensible speeds. When the Associated Press and New York Times covered the topic in 1945, they speculated the objects might be a new form of German weaponry.
There is no shortage of strange documents in the CIA’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) electronic reading room. Many reveal the agency’s efforts to keep tabs on the technological developments of other countries, especially during and after World War II.
One document brings up a famous German engineer named Georg Klein, who, as the document states, expressed that “though many people believe the ‘flying saucers’ to be a postwar development, they were actually in the planning stage in German aircraft factories as early as 1941.”
The document then goes on to mention an experiment described by Klein:
“The “flying saucer” reached an altitude of 12,400 meters within 3 minutes and a speed of 2,200 kilometers per hour. Klein emphasized that in accordance with German plans, the speed of these “saucers” would reach 4,000 kilometers per hour. One difficulty, according to Klein, was the problem of obtaining the materials to be used for the construction of the “saucers,” but even this had been solved by German engineers toward the end of 1945, and construction on the objects was scheduled to begin, Klein added.
Three Different Models
According to Klein, by 1944 the Germans had already built three saucers for testing. Were these the “foo” fighters all of these American pilots were reporting? The document describes the three disks:
One type actually had the shape of a disc, with an interior cabin, and was built at the (unidentified) factories, which had also built the V2 rockets. This model was 42 meters in diameter. The other model had the shape of a ring, with raised sides and a spherically shaped pilot’s cabin placed on the outside, in the center of the ring . . . [and] both models had the ability to take off vertically and to land in an extremely restricted area, like helicopters.
The engineers were ordered to destroy these saucers, including all of the plans for them. “The engineers at the Mite factories in Breslau, however, were not warned in sufficient time of the Soviet approach, and the Soviets, therefore, succeeded in seizing their material. Plans, as well as specialized personnel, were immediately sent directly to the Soviet Union under heavy guard.”
German Saucer Technology Has Been in the Lore for a Long Time
Aviation writer Nick Cook is one of many to have investigated this topic, and in 2002 he came to the conclusion that the Nazis had experimented “with a form of science the rest of the world had never remotely considered” and which continues to be suppressed today.
It makes you wonder what the United States received given that, through Operation Paperclip, a number of top German scientists were transported to the United States.
“[Italian researcher] Renato Vesco argued that Germans had developed antigravity. Disc-shaped and tubular craft were built and tested near the end of the Second World War, which, he argued, was the proper explanation of foo fighters. These concepts, he maintained, were developed by the Americans and Soviets and led directly to flying saucers.”
Another researcher Joseph P, Farrell, a professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Berkely, believes that some of the Nazi’s developments were
A means to tap into zero-point energy, or to phrase it differently, the energy of the physical medium of space-time itself
As a means to manipulate gravity itself, i.e. as an advanced prototypical field propulsion technology; and,
As a means to the ultimate, potentially planet-busting, weapons
Former head of the CIA Roscoe Hilenkoetter put it best in 1960 when he told the nation that “behind the scenes, high ranking air force officers are soberly concerned about UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense.” (source)

I’ve been researching the UFO/extraterrestrial phenomenon for more than two decades now, and the more I do, the more I realize just how little I know, and how much information is out there that I have yet to examine. What I have learned, from documents like the one above, is that many of these crafts are most likely manmade, by our own agencies.
That being said, although UFOs are now officially verified, this wasn’t so just a few years ago. Just as there was evidence for the UFO phenomenon when it was ridiculed, so too does the extraterrestrial hypothesis have plenty of evidence to back it up, despite not being accepted by the mainstream yet.

Onlangs gaf de CIA een groot aantal documenten vrij, waaruit onder meer is gebleken dat de spionagedienst krantenberichten over vliegende schotels in het buitenland nauwgezet volgde.
Eén van de stukken gaat over een Duitse ingenieur, die claimde dat de Sovjets Duitse experts op het gebied van vliegende schotels aan het werk hadden gezet.
Daarnaast bleek volgens de CIA uit berichten uit Toronto dat de Canadese luchtmacht aan een ‘vliegende schotel’ werkte die in toekomstige oorlogen zou worden gebruikt.
Diepste geheim
Ingenieurs van de luchtmacht werkten in fabrieken van A.B. Roe in het diepste geheim aan de vliegende schotel.
Tegen het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden in Duitsland bouwtekeningen voor vliegende schotels gevonden.
De Duitse ingenieur Georg Klein stelde volgens de CIA dat er in 1941 al in Duitse vliegtuigfabrieken werd gewerkt aan vliegende schotels.
Eerste testvlucht
Klein, die zei dat hij werkzaam was voor het ministerie van Albert Speer, was op 14 februari 1945 in Praag om de eerste testvlucht van een vliegende schotel te aanschouwen.
Tijdens het experiment bereikte het vaartuig binnen drie minuten een hoogte van 12.400 meter en een snelheid van 2200 kilometer per uur.
De topsnelheid van de schotels bedroeg volgens de ingenieur 4000 kilometer per uur.
Zware bewaking
Hij legde uit dat eind 1944 drie verschillende prototypes klaar waren om te worden getest. Eén type had de vorm van een schijf en was gebouwd in de fabriek waar ook de V2-raketten werden gemaakt.
De CIA merkt op dat de Sovjets in Wroclaw de hand hadden weten te leggen op de plannen.
Mensen die aan de schotels werkten werden gelijk onder zware bewaking overgebracht naar de Sovjet-Unie.
Syrië
In Frans-Equatoriaal-Afrika werden op 22 november 1952 vier vliegende schotels gezien. Een priester genaamd Carlos Maria zag die avond vier grote schijven roerloos in lucht hangen.
“Ze hadden een zilverachtige kleur zoals de maan,” zei de priester. “Vlak voordat ze alle vier begonnen te bewegen lichtten ze op als zonnen.”
De CIA wijst daarnaast op een bericht dat op 19 mei 1953 in de Syrische krant Al Ahaya verscheen en waarin wordt gesteld dat er vliegende schotels waren gezien boven de stad Homs.
Iran
De objecten kwamen volgens de krant vanuit het zuiden.
Een dag daarvoor, op 18 mei 1953, werd een oplichtend object gezien in de lucht boven de Iraanse stad Abadan.
Het object ‘was net zo fel als de zon en had de vorm van een nieuwe maan’. Hetzelfde object werd gezien boven de olievelden in Khuzestan, aldus de krant.

Er gaan op dit moment beelden viraal van een taxi in Hong Kong die 's avonds in het donker rijdt als er plotsklaps "iets" opduikt.
Dat "iets" lijkt op een soort mist die de auto lijkt aan te vallen, waarna deze dan ook prompt van de weg raakt.
Er zijn van die dingen die ineens viraal gaan en het onderstaande verhaal is daar een dergelijk voorbeeld van.
Hong Leung uit Hong Kong reed in zijn auto op een avond achter een taxi door bochtige straten van Hong Kong. Hij had zijn dashcam aan en was daardoor in staat iets bijzonders vast te leggen.
De gebeurtenis vond afgelopen september plaats, maar gaat nu, vooral via sociale media, viraal.
Je ziet op een gegeven moment "iets" links in beeld verschijnen, het lijkt op een kleine mistwolk.
Die wolk schijnt het specifiek gemunt te hebben op de taxi, alsof het deze doelbewust wil aanvallen.
En dat gebeurt vervolgens ook, wanneer de taxi als het ware wordt "opgeslokt" door de mistwolk.
Wanneer je echter de wolk wat uitvergroot, net voordat het de taxi omringt, dan is er een soort gezicht te ontdekken, waardoor veel mensen denken dat we hier niet met een mistwolk te maken hebben, maar met een bovennatuurlijk wezen.
Hieronder volgen de bewegende beelden en oordeel zelf wat het is: Een "gewone" mistwolk die een bijzondere route neemt, een bovennatuurlijk wezen of complete nep, wat natuurlijk ook altijd nog een mogelijkheid is.
Dat deze gebeurtenis zo viraal gaat, geeft wel aan dat het een onderwerp is dat behoorlijk leeft onder mensen.

Many people around the world notice that something strange is going on in the sky.

Night skies are much brighter and there is a strange glow from where the Sun has set.
I definitely noticed a strong glow some nights long after the sun has set.
Like the glow is different along the entire horizon.
I can say the same for the night sky here in Opononi, Northland, New Zealand. I don't see the western ocean horizon, but there is a 'glow' to the west well after sunset.
I saw that glow after the sun went down and it was dark, on a cruise in Feb going south to Puerto Vallarta.
It might be some kind of energy being released from movement of the Earth’s core, maybe pole shift connected?

According to Spaceweather, the vernal equinox is less than 10 days away. That means one thing: Cracks are opening in Earth's magnetic field. Researchers have long known that during weeks around equinoxes fissures form in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind can pour through the gaps.
NASA and European spacecraft have been detecting these cracks for years. Small ones are about the size of California, and many are wider than the entire planet. While the cracks are open, magnetic fields on Earth they are connected to those on the sun.
While these cracks are no danger to people on Earth there is another strange phenomenon that threatens to flip Earth’s magnetic field.
Earth’s magnetic field is decaying at such a rapid rate that scientists think the poles may flip.
New research shows the most significant weakening is happening under Africa, in an area called the ‘South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA).
The force field has weakened significantly in the past 160 years and scientists have suggested that it could be in the process of flipping. Effectively this means a switch in magnetic polarity and would see compasses point south instead of north.
Actually this has happened several times in the history of the planet, occurring roughly every 200,000 to 300,000 years. Approximately 40,000 years ago, it attempted to switch before snapping back into place, reports RT.
Scientists believe that the SAA is the most recent display of a recurring phenomenon in Earth’s core beneath Africa that then affects the entire globe.
They are getting stronger evidence that there’s something unusual about the core-mantle boundary under Africa that could be having an important impact on the global magnetic field.

Despite it is not clear whether it is a weak magnetic field, a strange anomaly under Africa or maybe there is another unknown source that causes all those strange glows and flashes in the sky, it seems to be going on.
According to Russian scientists, the sun is about to hit us in the head. A solar weather forecast from the Russian Academy of Sciences says that, on March 18, the sun will spit a solar flare in our direction, triggering a geomagnetic storm with the potential to shut down electronics as well as cause headaches, dizziness, and sleeplessness in people around the world. The March 18 storm is the third solar storm to hit the earth this year, but 2018 is expected to be a relatively quiet period of activity for the Sun. The last “solar maximum,” the period in the sun’s 11-year cycle with the most activity, occurred in 2014.
Extreme solar storms can wreak havoc on satellites, GPS, and other communication systems. In the event of a major solar storm, essential services can be shut down to prevent permanent damage. NASA says that the storm later this month will not be powerful to affect communications devices. Just like terrestrial weather, however, solar storms can strengthen or weaken in intensity, and the exact power of the storm won’t be known until it hits.
Solar storms don’t just affect technology. A good solar pummeling can have adverse effects on humans too. Increased risk of stroke during geomagnetic storms has been reported, as has increased intensity in migraine headaches and cluster headache cycles. Disruptions to sleep cycles have been correlated with solar flares as well.
Geomagnetic storms have also been associated with depression, headaches, dizziness, confused thinking, and erratic behaviors In other words, it won’t be the St. Patrick’s Day hangover on March 18 that will have you doubled over begging for death and yelling obscenities at anyone unlucky enough to be in earshot, it will totally be the Sun’s fault.

Geomagnetic storms are due in part to Coronal Mass Ejections (CME), clouds of plasma released alongside solar flares. These massive emissions of charged particles can cause Earth’s magnetic field to behave wildly when faced with a direct hit.
It’s a relatively common occurrence. The phenomenon of aurora borealis, or northern lights, is caused by the ejection of magnetic radiation from the sun. The storms are usually harmless, but a major solar storm could be devastating to a world increasingly reliant on global communications. In 1989 most of the Canadian province of Quebec was effected by a solar storm blackout, and the northern lights were seen as far south as Texas.

Recently the U.S. Geological Survey has deployed new techniques to model the effects of geomagnetic storms in 3D, allowing a more accurate forecast of the impact of these storms will have.
NASA says that the March 18 solar storm will not be anything to worry about. That’s good news, because the same forecast has two more similar solar storms occurring only a few days later. You can come up with your own joke about weathermen being wrong.
Given all of the declassified files and recordings of unexplained aerial phenomena being made public in the United States, it’s no surprise that other countries including America’s closest neighbors would begin disclosing their own interest in or knowledge of UFOs. Case in point: a new trove of documents have been released which shed light on the Canadian government’s role in researching UFO phenomena. What will these add to the growing body of declassified UFO files?
Noted Canadian ufologist Chris Rutkowski uncovered the documents in Canada’s national archives and recently posted them to his blog Ufology Research. The 27 pages of documents detail six UFO cases recorded in 1967 and were prepared by Wing Commander Douglas Robertson. It is unknown to whom the documents were presented, though Rutkowski speculates it could have been for a newly-appointed Minister of Defence. Between 1966 and 1967, UFO reports went up by over 400% in Canada and several government departments began taking serious interest in these phenomena.
The documents ultimately breakdown numerous sightings and reports into seven categories: hoaxes, mass hysteria or psychological suggestion, misinterpretations of natural events, advanced or unknown military technology, and sightings likely due to psychological conditions. However, the report does list a category which includes truly anomalous sightings defined as “unusual sightings which the viewer is unable to identify or explain, namely, UFOs.” The document also contains references to various educational and medical institutions which aided the Ministry of Defence in debriefing, interviewing, and assessing witnesses.
Among the incidents referred to in the documents are the Falcon Lake incident, widely regarded as one of Canada’s most famous encounters. The new documents reveal that the Ministry of Defence found evidence of radioactivity which corroborates eyewitness testimony, and that scientists were unable to explain the anomaly, noting “a satisfactory ending or conclusion is still lacking.” Another incident in which a man reported a UFO flying over trees near Clear Water Bay found evidence of wilted leaves on said trees, with the Department of Forestry concluding “they are unable to explain the reason for the wilting.” Images of the documents and an analysis of them can be found on Rutkowski’s blog here.

Other incidents referred to include photographs of various unidentified flying objects, anomalous radar sightings, and even crop circles. Like in last year’s disclosure of the Pentagon’s secretive UFO research projects, these documents are far from the smoking gun proof of alien visitation we all wish they were. Still, disclosing that governments are indeed taking the UFO phenomenon seriously is a step in the right direction.
Unless, of course, all of these so-called disclosures are simply some kind of misdirection or some type of psy-op. Without a doubt, the real spooky stuff will never see the light of day, all evidence of it incinerated or buried at the bottom of a salt mine years ago. Is this new evidence meant to placate us just a little longer, keeping our attention on the government bureaucracies which hide these secrets as opposed to on the skies?
The Lower Peninsula of the state of Michigan is often referred to as “the mitten” because its shape resembles winter hand coverings or perhaps the leather gloves that baseball players wear. That shape may be ironic if the latest predictions hold true that China’s dead and falling Tiangong-1 space station will pierce Earth’s atmosphere on or about April 3rd and head straight for the pocket of Michigan’s mitt. Will this be the last out for Wolverine State?

The Aerospace Corporation operates a federally funded research and development center in El Segundo, California, which provides technical guidance and advice on all aspects of space missions to military, civil, and commercial customers. One critical aspect is the end of these missions and Aerospace maintains a page on its website for tracking the ultimate demise of Tiangong-1, the 8.5 ton space station which China’s National Space Administration launched in 2011 and lost contact with and control over in January 2016. Since then, its final resting place has been the subject of speculations, predictions and warnings – along with varying degrees of indifference by the Chinese space program.

Other high probability areas include Northern China, central Italy, northern Spain, the Middle East, New Zealand, Tasmania, South America, southern Africa, and the northern states of the U.S. Should people living in these areas be worried?
“When considering the worst-case location (yellow regions of the map) the probability that a specific person (i.e., you) will be struck by Tiangong-1 debris is about one million times smaller than the odds of winning the Powerball jackpot. In the history of spaceflight, no known person has ever been harmed by reentering space debris.”

Considering the Powerball jackpot as of this writing is up to $420 million due to no winning tickets for weeks, no one should be worried. And yet, the news is filled with stories of worried Lower Michigan residents. It could be that they’re uneasy after the same area was hit by pieces of a mysterious meteor on January 20th of this year – a meteor that attracted hunters hoping to cash in with a collector offering $20,000 for a kilo of meteorite matter. Who knows what pieces of Tiangong-1 might sell for?
Wait a minute! Is Michigan scare-mongering rumors about the Chinese space station to keep prospectors away so they can find and sell the valuable chunks of Chinese space debris for themselves? With the way the area’s economy has been hit over the past few decades, who can blame them?
No matter where it lands, Aerospace warns that it may not be wise to get too close to any debris.
“Potentially, there may be a highly toxic and corrosive substance called hydrazine on board the spacecraft that could survive reentry. For your safety, do not touch any debris you may find on the ground nor inhale vapors it may emit.”
Wait a minute! Is Aerospace spreading rumors so its people can collect the debris for themselves?

UFOs have been reported by the Navy and other branches of the military for decades.
Despite numerous reports, the military has not put any significant or serious effort into finding out specific explanations for UFO incidents.
One of the reasons why there has not been a serious effort is because there is a negative stigma associated with those who believe that the UFOs may be visitors from beyond Earth.
"I can tell you, I think it was not from this world," retired US Navy pilot Commander David Fravor told ABC News in an interview in December 2017.
"I'm not crazy, haven't been drinking. It was — after 18 years of flying, I've seen pretty much about everything that I can see in that realm, and this was nothing close."
Fravor was describing his encounter with an unidentified flying object during a training mission off the coast of California on November 14, 2004. The UFO was performing seemingly impossible moves — "left, right, forward, back, just random," in Fravor 's words, and then accelerated and disappeared.
"I have never seen anything in my life, in my history of flying that has the performance, the acceleration — keep in mind this thing had no wings," he said.
Video of the incident, along with another similar encounter, was published in December by the New York Times. The second video shows US Navy pilots tracking one of apparently numerous UFOs moving at high speeds with seemingly no source of propulsion.

"This is a f------ drone bro," one pilot says. "There's a whole fleet of them. Look on the S.A." the other responds.
As the UFO continues on its flight path, one of the pilot makes a note of their speed and direction — "They are all going against the wind. The wind is 120 knots to the west. Look at that thing dude."
Soon, to the shock of the pilots, the UFO changes position. "Look at that thing!" one calls out as the UFO, somehow manages to turn on its side while still maintaining its speed and direction. "Its rotating!" the other pilot says.
Another video posted online last Friday by the To The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, a private scientific research group, shows a similar incident — a US Navy F/A-18 getting a lock on a UFO, and the crew yelling their excitement and confusion at each other.
"Whoa! Got it!" one of the pilots, yells after getting a lock. "What the f--- is that thing?!" the other asks.
These videos are a select few of a number of recorded encounters between the US Navy and UFO's that the Department of Defense has unclassified and released.
TTSA has posted videos to give an in-depth analysis on each event that the DoD has released.
The DoD has not identified any of the mystery aircraft, leading some to believe that they could be extraterrestrial technology manned by alien visitors.
The DoD did have a program dedicated to investigating UFO incidents that was started in 2007, but the department terminated the funding for the project in 2012. Though the Times reports that some defense and intelligence officials are still investigating the incidents, they appear to have made virtually no progress in coming to a conclusion or any findings.
Negative stigma attached to UFO research
There is reportedly a negative stigma associated with anyone who pursues the idea that the UFOs are extraterrestrial life visiting earth and believers tend to attribute the slow progress on identifying the aircraft on lack of interest from superiors.
"Nobody wants to be 'the alien guy' in the national security bureaucracy," Christopher Mellon, an advisor to TTSA and a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence in the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations, writes in the Washington Post.
"Nobody wants to be ridiculed or sidelined for drawing attention to the issue," Mellon writes. "This is true up and down the chain of command, and it is a serious and recurring impediment to progress."
As a result, he claims, the military does virtually nothing with the numerous reports of UFOs that servicemen make.
"There is no Pentagon process for synthesizing all the observations the military is making. The current approach is equivalent to having the Army conduct a submarine search without the Navy," Mellon writes.
"What we lack above all is recognition that this issue warrants a serious collection and analysis effort."
Mellon argues that the issue needs to be taken seriously, and that a concerted effort that cuts through the "quarrelsome national security bureaucracies" could find realistic explanations for the incidents, and not rule out alien life as purely fictional.
Robert Bigelow, an American billionaire who works with NASA, is likewise convinced that aliens exist and that UFOs have visited Earth.
"Internationally, we are the most backward country in the world on this issue," Bigelow told the New York Times. "Our scientists are scared of being ostracized, and our media is scared of the stigma."
Countries like China, Russia, and other European nations are willing to pursue this idea more than their American counterparts, according to Bigelow.
"They are proactive and willing to discussthis topic, rather than being held back by a juvenile taboo," he said.

Back around Christmas time, we looked at some of the initial videos of “unknown aircraft” released by the government after they revealed a secret program which had been monitoring unidentified aerial threats. (Let’s face it… they’re talking about UFOs, whether they’re something cooked up by one of our black ops projects or somebody from another planet.) After that news came out, I couldn’t help but notice that there was a brief period where people were talking about it, but then it just sort of went away.
Well, another video has been released. This one was taken off the east coast of the United States in 2015 by some F-18 Hornet pilots. And with its release, Christopher Mellon is asking some of the same questions I’ve had in an op-ed at the Washington Post. But unlike me, this guy has a bit firmer background in this area. He’s a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for intelligence in both the Clinton and Bush 43 administrations. These days he serves an adviser to the To the Stars Academy for Arts and Science which we’ve discussed here before and he’s working with a number of other government and military personnel who are looking for answers.
Before we get to Mellon’s thoughts on this, let’s look at the latest video. It sets up with some background information on what it is you’re seeing in this footage shot from the weapons control systems of an F-18. You hear the voices of several pilots who are, somewhat shockingly, laughing as they try to figure out what the heck it is they’re tracking. It allegedly dropped down from more than 60K feet at supersonic speed, stopped about fifty feet over the ocean and took off. Much like the video from last December, the Super Hornets were unable to catch it. Oh… and it doesn’t have wings.
Nobody is sure what these things are, but as I said above, Mellon has questions.
Is it possible that America has been technologically leap-frogged by Russia or China? Or, as many people wondered after the videos were first published by the New York Times in December, might they be evidence of some alien civilization?
Unfortunately, we have no idea, because we aren’t even seeking answers.
I served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence for the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations and as staff director for the Senate Intelligence Committee, and I know from numerous discussions with Pentagon officials over the past two years that military departments and agencies treat such incidents as isolated events rather than as part of a pattern requiring serious attention and investigation. A colleague of mine at To the Stars Academy, Luis Elizondo, used to run a Pentagon intelligence program that examined evidence of “anomalous” aircraft, but he resigned last fall to protest government inattention to the growing body of empirical data.
Mellon is expressing the frustration of a lot of people in the military and the intelligence community. You don’t have to believe in anything crazy or have any sort of opinion at all. But the government has a pile of information and nobody is compiling it across agencies and departments to try to get a handle on it. Everything is being treated like a one-off incident and if our government has any answers, they’re not telling anyone.
Mellon has a theory as to why it’s not being pursued more vigorously. Nobody wants to be “the alien guy” in the national security bureaucracy. That’s traditionally been a great way to end your career quickly. But somebody needs to at least be asking the questions, don’t they? If you don’t want to think it’s extraterrestrials, that’s fine. I’m not even sure I believe that. But these aren’t pictures of swamp gas or weather balloons. If this is something that the Russians or the Chinese cooked up, we’ve probably got a very serious problem if we have nothing even remotely close to that sort of capability. I suppose the more comforting theory is that it’s actually one of ours but it’s so classified they can’t admit it. But if that’s the case, why release these videos?
Whether it’s ours, Putin’s or somebody from the Pleiades system, wouldn’t our government want to know? And if that technology is real and actually capable of doing anything close to what these videos seem to indicate, wouldn’t we want to get hold of it or figure out how to develop it ourselves?

Suppose the width of the wall is X m.
Then, the volume of the wall is: (40,075,000 * 0.6096) * X = 24,429,720 * X m3 ~ 24×106 * X m3

At an altitude of 200 meters, on the top of a massive column of rock lie the magnificent ancient ruins of a temple reaching for the stars.
Located in the northern MataleDistrict near the town of Dambullain in SriLanka lie the enigmatic ruins of an ancient rock fortress. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that is said to house the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to be once the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa.
According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle the Culavamsa, it is believed to have been built by KingKasyapa, between 477 – 495 CE.
Erected on the massive rock, the temple and its surroundings were meticulously decorated with colorful frescoes in the distant past.
The history of the temple and the times that predate it are surrounded by rich history and magnificent ancient legends.
Said to be the Alakamandava, or the City of the Gods built up before 50centuries ago by KingKubera who was the half-brother of Ravana (Ravan) as described in the Ramayanaya, Lal Sirinivas and Mirando Obesekara described Sigiriya as a post-historical archeology turning point of Ravana.

Despite having a rich history dating back to around 495 CE, researchers have found evidence of human occupation nearly five thousand years ago during the Mesolithic Period.
Today’s tourists are welcomed by enormous lion paws about halfway up the side of this rock. The name of this place is derived from this structure —Sīhāgiri, the LionRock.

As noted by geologists, the Sigiriyarock is a remnant of an eruption of hardened magma of an extinct and long-eroded volcano.
It stands out above the surrounding plain, visible in kilometers from all directions.

The temple was built on a surface that according to many appears to have been cut clean.
Standing as evidence of ancient man’s ingenuity, the ancient rock fortress offers a rich history with is more than enough to impress every single visitor, offering a breathtaking view of the ingenuity and creativity of the builders.
The upper palace, located on top of the rock, still has cisterns cut into the rock, where you can still find water.
The pits and walls that surround the lower palace are richly ornamented.

After the death of its builder, King Kasyapa, it remained a monastic complex until the fourteenth century, after which it was entirely abandoned.
In 1831 Major Jonathan Forbes of the 78th Highlanders of the British army, while returning on horseback from a trip to Pollonnuruwa, encountered the “bush covered summit of Sigiriya”.
The Sigiri inscriptions were deciphered by the archaeologist Paranavithana who published a renowned work in two volumes, in Oxford, known as “Sigiri glyphs”.
“I am Budal [the writer’s name]. Came with hundreds of people to see Sigiriya. Since all the others wrote poems, I did not!”
Paranavithana wrote the popular book “History of Sigiriya”.
As some readers of Mysterious Universe will know, one of my big interests is the Contactee/Space Brother phenomenon, which was most prominent in the 1950s. It’s a subject which is very often derided by many in Ufology (and, at times, with good reason…). But, that doesn’t take away the fact that the issue is an important one. Of those who tackled the whole controversy, certainly one of the most knowledgeable was the late Colin Bennett. He wrote what – in my opinion – remains the most important and insightful book on contactee George Adamski. The title of Colin’s book? Looking for Orthon – Orthon being the alleged name of the equally alleged alien that Adamski claimed to have met in November 1952.
Back in 2009, I interviewed Colin about his ideas on Adamski, the Space Brothers and the Contactee crowd. And, today, I thought I would share with you – and without interruption – Colin’s observations on those long-gone times of the 1950s when the Contactee movement ruled the ufological roost. Colin, who died in 2014, told me:
“Many Orthons have appeared throughout history. The equivalents to Adamski’s Venusian ‘space brother’ have appeared on mountain tops, in deserts, and have appeared to walk on water, or fly in the sky. Their sole function is to sow seeds in the head; just as a farmer grows a particular crop. These seeds act on the imagination, which replicates and amplifies whatever story-technology is around at the time. People such as Adamski and the rest of the contactees were, and still are, like psychic lightning-rods for certain brands of information. Undoubtedly, rich or poor, clever or dumb, they are possessed by a kind of higher cerebral disturbance, and like Moses, they are as prepared for the ‘visitation’ as they anxiously await for a new product brand, for the equivalent to RFID-type branding is what ‘contact’ is all about.
“Contactees are host-nutrients for whatever cultural sales lines are on offer from visions conjured up by clouds, sea or sand. The message is ‘consumed’ and thoroughly processed exactly as a viral product is absorbed. The incomprehensibility of the received stories is irrelevant. They represent a heavily codified branch of postmodern intellectual consumerism. In receiving ‘messages’ at all, Contactees are bar coded as it were, and elements of the induced story-technology are ready to crystallize out into that final alchemical stage called the mechanical real. But we must be careful here. As the alchemist said to his apprentice, ‘The game may be rigged, but it’s the only game in town.’
“Deception and all its ramifications is the key to this whole business. This does not burst the bubble of the mystery however, for manipulative levels of faction may well be our first clue as to how a possible alien mind might work. If the levels of deception of all kinds in human culture are anything to go by, the range of such within an alien culture must be both multiple and profound.
“The ‘space-folk’ are sculptured by wars between rival viral memes competing for prime-time belief. It may be that, as an independent form of non-organic life, memes as active viral information can display an Orthon entity at a drop of a hat. They come complete with sets of cultural agendas. After they have rung the doorbell as it were, and the goods are sold, these metaphysical salesmen disappear like the traditional Men in Black, no doubt traveling on to seed other dreams in other towns and other heads. The goods we have unwittingly bought are half-formed memories of having met someone from another world.
“Over a half-century later, we can no more erase the legendary Contactees from our heads than we can erase Elvis Presley or Marilyn Monroe. Once induced by mere transient suggestion, these powerful images become permanent fast-breeders, turning out scripts and performances in all our heads – for no-one can escape – even as we sleep. “A man says he has seen a fairy being. Another man says that is impossible, because fairy beings do not exist. When we subtract the two beliefs we do not get zero as an answer. We have the thinnest of belief-tissue remaining, but perhaps mechanical quantity is irrelevant. The smallest part of an HTML address contains the whole address, rather like a fractal. These creatures, though seen and photographed, leave no trace of fights, no food swath, no blood, no sweat. They appear as partially formed displays rather then flesh and blood as we know it. As soon as we are into display we are into Media. It is somewhat chilling to think that if an Orthon or even perhaps a Jesus can appear in this manner, then so can many things else, including objects and even situations. In this it is possible that we are host-receptors of skunk-smoke from life forms not yet known to us.

They allow humanity to breathe and access a Matrix world in which anything that can be imagined can happen. It might be denied by social-scientific left, but the truth is that dreams, fantasies, and mystical experiences of all kinds play an absolutely essential part in all human mental operations.
“George Adamski played a significant part in establishing New Age thinking. It might be well to remember that the entire body of our moral philosophy and spiritual life is formed by visions and inspirations. It does not come from science or technology. Those who thoughtlessly dismiss mystical experience cut themselves off from all art, literature, and no small part of all thought and philosophy. As mystics and prophets know, when desert light strikes the retina, anything that can be imagined can happen. The greatest tribute that can be paid to Adamski is that through both foul means and fair, he helped to create one of the very few routes to the unconscious that we have.”
Imagine a year without summer. The sky turns gray during the day and glows a sinister red at night. Trees wither and start to fall, all vegetation dries down and becomes a desolate shadow of its former self. Animals also start to suffer and thin down, and the damage propagates up the food chain, wiping out entire ecosystems. The same cycle repeats year after year, with no visible end in sight.
Sounds like an apocalyptic scenario, doesn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what the world, and us too, as part of it, went through some 74,000 years ago during a supervolcano eruption. And some of us actually thrived.

Surviving a disaster
Volcanic eruptions are scary enough as it is, but supervolcanoes are an entirely different beast. A supervolcano eruption brings deposits of at least 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles), affecting the entire planet’s climate and chemical make-up. There are about 20 known supervolcanoes on the planet, and geologists have managed to discover just 12 eruptions from supervolcanoes, the oldest known one dating from about 25 million years ago.
Toba, in Indonesia, was one of these eruptions.
The eruption was large enough to have deposited an ash layer approximately 15 cm (6 in) thick over all of South Asia and ejected some 10,000 million tonnes of sulfurous acid, as well as 6,000 million tonnes of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. It was a catastrophic eruption, of biblical proportions, but the worst happened after the eruption: the aerosols ejected by the volcano dropped global temperatures 3.0 to 3.5 °C (5 to 6 °F) for several years.
Volcanic winter
To give you a sense of scale, in 1815, Mount Tambora’s eruption (also in Indonesia) brought crop failures, famine, and mass migrations when it reduced mean temperatures by 0.53 °C (0.95 °F). The eruption column reached the stratosphere at an altitude of more than 43 kilometers (141,000 ft), creating an aerosol veil that blocked part of incoming sunlight energy. This is called a volcanic winter.
Long-term cooling effects are primarily dependent upon injection of sulfur gasses into the stratosphere. The Toba eruption dwarfs Mount Tambora, with the effects being much more devastating.
No species were spared from the effects, and there is evidence of a population bottleneck (a sharp reduction in the size of a population) in central east Africa and India, which affects the genetic make-up of the human worldwide population to this day. But some populations might have been better off than others.
Some ecosystems (called refugia) still had the necessary resources to survive. Most notably, populations close to the sea would have likely been able to eat shellfish, which are nutritious and less affected by eruptions.
Unlikely evidence
Researchers have found new evidence relating to this eruption in an unlikely place: archaeological sediment in South Africa.
When the Toba eruption took place, it spewed rock, gas, and tiny microscopic pieces of glass. Under a microscope, they have a very distinctive hook-like shape which can trace them to the eruption. These fragments are so small that when they’re ejected into the atmosphere, they can spread across the entire world. Such a fragment was chanced upon by Panagiotis (Takis) Karkanas, who found it in some sediment encased in resin.
“It was one shard particle out of millions of other mineral particles that I was investigating. But it was there, and it couldn’t be anything else,” says Karkanas.
He and his colleagues had considered the possibility of finding such a volcanic shard, but it wasn’t easy to identify one.
“Takis and I had discussed the potential of finding the Toba shards in the sediments of our archaeological site, and with his eagle eye, he found one,” explains Curtis W. Marean, project director of the Pinnacle Point excavations where the shard was found.
The research team has been excavating caves at Pinnacle Point, South Africa, for nearly 20 years. Glass shards from Mount Toba were discovered at the PP5-6 location.

They sent it to Eugene Smith, a volcanologist with the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. For Smith, it was a long trip down memory lane.
“The Pinnacle Point study brought me back to the study of glass shards from my master’s thesis 40 years earlier,” says Smith.
It was kind of like looking for a needle in an archaeological haystack, Smith told ZME Science in an email.
“The shards are small (less than 100 microns in size) and very rare (one shard per about 10,000 grains), but through careful processing in our lab at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) we were able to identify multiple shards from both Pinnacle Point and Vleesbaai. For Pinnacle Point, we have three chemical analyses for three shards (but we found about 40 more). For Vleesbaai, we now have 12 analyses for 12 different shards.”
Finding such a shard obviously involves a lot of chance, but through thoughtful and careful preparations, researchers can improve their chances, Smith says.
“Although the shards are very rare, we increase the odds of finding them by doing careful processing in the UNLV lab. Samples are first cleaned to remove organic and carbonate material. They then go through several heavy liquid steps to remove both heavier and lighter material leaving grains with a specific gravity in the proper range to find shards. These grains are mounted on an epoxy round and polished. We then look at each grain on the round using a petrographic microsope.”
It’s a tedious, but rewarding process.
“The rounds contain a lot of mineral grains but they can be identified using their optical properties. Shards are glass, so they are optically isotopic and easy to distinguish from mineral grains like quartz or feldspar. After identifying the shards, we analyze them using electron microprobe and laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometer. This is a very tedious process that takes quite a bit of care and patience, but finding shards and identifying their source is an amazing experience.”
Together, they were able to confirm the source of the shard. Putting two and two together (the archaeological and the volcanologic evidence), they concluded that humans must have survived the eruption in order to leave the remains behind.
“Many previous studies have tried to test the hypothesis that Toba devastated human populations,” Marean notes. “But they have failed because they have been unable to present definitive evidence linking a human occupation to the exact moment of the event.”
There’s a rich record of archaeological remains in the area, indicating a continuously inhabited area, Marean tells ZME Science.
“There is a rich record of human habitation along the south coast of South Africa from about 120,000 years ago to the present. The record from 160,000 to 120,000 is more ephemeral. The evidence includes their discarded stone tools, food remains, and fire places. The groups would be hunter-gatherers living in social groups of about 20-30 people, and perhaps organized into larger ethnolinguistic groups, but we are not sure about the latter.”
Researchers say the archaeological evidence indicates not only that the human populations managed to survive, but that they were able to go about their lives relatively undisturbed — which was a rare privilege, given the scale of the volcanic eruption.
“These models tell us a lot about how people lived at the site and how their activities changed through time,” say Erich Fisher, associate research scientist with the Institute of Human Origins, who built the detailed photorealistic 3D models from the data. “What we found was that during and after the time of the Toba eruption people lived at the site continuously, and there was no evidence that it impacted their daily lives.”
It’s quite possible that their proximity to the rich coast ensured a stable diet and allowed them to thrive, as other populations were partially or completely wiped out.
“We speculated in the paper that the rick coastal foods, such as shellfish, may have provided a more resilient food base than terrestrial foods and this might have allowed people to make it through better than interior groups,” Marean concluded for ZME Science.
“Of course being very near the volcano one would see a very strong temporary effect on weather. But there would have been worldwide climate impacts, but these would also vary regionally.”

Enormous filaments within the solar system's closest massive region of star formation are made up of wispy fibers of cold gas. New observations have revealed these fibers in exquisite detail, helping scientists to compare the enormous star-formation region with other, smaller clouds and move toward a unified model of star formation under different environments.
"The detection of fibers in Orion opens a new window on the description of the internal gas structure in massive clouds," wrote astronomer Alvaro Hacar Gonzalez, of the Netherlands' Leiden University. "Since their discovery, different studies have reported the detection of fibers in isolated and clustered star-forming environments."
Hacar Gonzalez led a team of researchers who studied one of the Orion nebula's most massive filaments, a region in the northern portion of the Orion A molecular cloud called the Integral Shape Filament (ISF), which stretches nearly 23 light-years in length. While the ISF is massive, there are other, smaller star-formation clouds that also host smaller filaments, which have been better characterized. Previous research has argued that there should be a direct link between the massive filaments and their low-mass counterparts, but astronomers have been stymied by an inability to reach the sensitivities necessary to probe the more massive filaments. By combining observations from the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and several other telescopes, Hacar Gonzalez and his colleagues were able to probe these regions for the first time. They found that the structures resembled their smaller cousins, suggesting that the two types of structures might have more similar star-formation processes than scientists previously thought.
"Our new ALMA observations demonstrate that this underlying organization is not restricted to low-mass clouds, but [is] also intrinsic of regions at higher-mass regimes," Hacar Gonzalez wrote in the new paper, published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics in February.
A unified star-formation theory
Located about 1,350 light-years from Earth, the Orion Nebula is the solar system's closest massive star-formation region. Its proximity has made it a target for astronomers working to understand how stars form and evolve in their first few million years. Stars are born when dense clouds of gas and dust begin to collapse under their own gravity. The resulting protostar eventually grows into a full-fledged star.
The Orion Nebula is made up of cold gas, visible only in the millimeter wavelength. That makes ALMA one of the only instruments capable of probing structures such as the ISF. Over the past few million years, the ISF has spawned several thousand young stars, and it contains dozens, if not hundreds, of embedded young stellar objects.
"The ISF is one of the best-studied massive filaments, and is usually employed as a benchmark for clustered star-formation theories," Hacar Gonzalez wrote.
The researchers were able to hunt for the cold, charged gas called diazenylium that makes up the ISF and identify a network of 55 fibers within the filament. By combining ALMA's observations with those made by the Millimetric Radioastronomy Institute's (IRAM) 30-meter telescope in the Spanish Sierra Nevada and the more familiar view by the ESO's Very Large Telescope, scientists were able to create the engaging new image and probe the thin fibers hiding within the enormous filament.
In addition to identifying the fibers, the team found an intricate network of gas within the massive ISF. Prominent clumps split into multiple independent substructures, which went on to branch into smaller filamentary features. The hierarchal organization resembles the bundles of fibers found in low-mass filaments and intermediate-mass clusters, according to the scientists.
"Investigating the internal structure of massive filaments is of crucial importance for the description of the star formation process in the Milky Way," Hacar Gonzalez wrote. "The widespread detection of fibers seems to reflect the preferred organization mechanism for the dense molecular gas within clouds."
The fibers don't just share a structure with their smaller counterparts. By comparing them to existing studies of other, smaller regions, the team found other similar characteristics. These similarities, which include surface density of the star-forming fibers, suggest that star formation in smaller clouds of gas works much as it does in larger regions.
"Based on this empirical correlation, we propose a unified star-formation scenario where the observational differences between low- and high-mass clouds, as well as both isolated and clustered regimes, naturally emerge from their initial concentration of fibers," Hacar Gonzalez wrote.
Waking up in the middle of the night to find your body frozen and pinned down by an invisible weight is the stuff that ghost stories are made of. Sure enough, a range of cultures have folded sleep paralysis into their horror lore — Americans did so recently in the 2016 horror film Dead Awake — suggesting that this recurring nightmare isn’t specific to any one time or place. Scientists studying the terrifying phenomenon think that it’s actually a neurologically driven process — rather, one that goes awry, suggesting there’s no escaping it unless we intervene directly in our heads.
Until science illuminated the origin of this disturbing nightmare, humans assumed it had a supernatural source. In places as varied as Scandinavia, Newfoundland, Korea, the American South, and Turkey, folklore blames the experience on some kind of evil spirit, witch, or creature that sits on a person’s chest or holds them down while they sleep. Now we know that what people have blamed on the Night Hag for so many centuries is actually the result of the sleep cycle going wrong (sorry, Night Hag).
You probably don’t realize it, but you’re actually physically paralyzed while you sleep for a big chunk of the night, which scientists in the Journal of Neuroscienceblamed on the tandem work of the neurotransmitters GABA and glycine in 2011. This state is known as “muscle atonia,” and it only happens during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep — the deepest part of the sleep cycle that produces the most vivid dreams. It’s thought that we evolved this temporary paralysis because otherwise we might act out our dreams more than we already do, which could be very dangerous. During REM sleep, which happens in periods lasting 90 to 120 minutes, your breathing also becomes faster and highly irregular. It’s not a great part of the sleep cycle to interrupt.

Unfortunately, poor sleep habits, exhaustion, shift work, and jet lag can shake you awake during REM sleep, according to researchers at the Anomalistic PsychologyResearch Unit, Goldsmiths, at the University of London. When you’re in the groggy, half-awake state — quickly waking up from REM sleep is notoriously difficult — breathing feels laborious because it’s been happening at an irregular pace, and you’re keenly aware that you can’t move. As panic sets in, it only exacerbates the feeling that you can’t breathe.
To make matters worse, studies have shown that hallucinations often accompany the physical terror. In 2011 in the journal Sleep Medicine Reviews, researchers combed through 35 studies on sleep paralysis from the past 50 years and grouped the hallucinations into three horrific types: “The presence of an intruder, pressure on the chest sometimes accompanied by physical and/or sexual assault experiences and levitation or out-of-body experiences.” Researchers think these hallucinations are a remnant of the dream state, though it’s not clear why these three types are the most common.
Luckily, the sensation passes as you ease out of the dream state, and it’s not thought to cause any long-term harm, at least physically. Psychologically, though, sleep paralysis can mess with your head long after you get out of bed. In 2013, a study in Clinical Psychological Science looked at the types of distress people experienced after having an episode and found that that the effects include sensing unseen presences, feeling like death is imminent, having a heightened fear of threat or assault, and generally ruminating on the episode, though the type of distress that ensues depends on the details of the experience. People who had particularly sense-based experiences — like straight-up seeing and feeling a demon crouched on your chest — tended to have more physical distress later. The effects are bad enough that the researchers say sleep paralysis could “make a significant contribution to the billions of dollars, worldwide, in costs associated with accidents, illnesses, and lost productivity associated with sleep disturbances.
Even if you’re one of the 92 percent of the general population that doesn’t experience sleep paralysis, you’ll never fully escape their influence. The word “nightmare” was actually first coined to describe sleep paralysis, folding in the Old English word mare — which refers to the mythological incubi, demonic sleep-molesters that were more than willing to crush a dreamer’s lungs.
