Being able to travel in time is something that has often been discussed, and it has been the focus of many movies. So far it has been seen as nothing more than a theory but would anyone believe a person if they said that they had traveled to a different time and come back?

Time travel is something that has fascinated many people for decades, and now a man from England by the name of William Taylor has come forward to say that he has been to the future on many different occasions and come back to tell the tale.
"Time travel was first successfully accomplished in 1981," Taylor claims. "There is an infinite number of alternate universes, it's possible every one of these universes exist and it's possible to move between these universes. We developed a machine to not only time travel, but move between these parallel universes."
Here is what Taylor - the time traveler - has to say to the world:
Taylor has realized that not everyone believes his story about being able to travel into the future and this does not seem to bother him. What bothers him more is fear of reprisal for telling his story. This is because he claims to have worked for the government in Britain along with the British Intelligence agency.
Taylor said that there are many advanced technologies being kept secret. He went on to say that in time they will be released to the public but for the time being, they are highly classified. He claimed that “they” would be coming after him for releasing the video and telling the truth and that he was putting himself at risk for speaking up. According to Taylor time travel was first accomplished in 1981, and there is an infinite number of alternate universes out there. He went on to say that it is possible that the universes exist and they can be moved between. Taylor claims that a machine was developed for time traveling and to allow people to move between the parallel universes.
In The Year 3000 Humans Live Underwater
Taylor spoke out above visiting the year 3000 and said that not a great deal had changed, other than humans lived under the water and he talked in detail about the things that he had seen during his time in the future. Taylor described looking up and seeing flying transportation in the sky above but only being able to see lights through what he claimed was thick smog. He went on to talk about going to 8973 and said that this was when the British government thought that machines and men would fuse together as one.
The video goes on and the longer that Taylor speaks about his time in the future and time travel the stranger it seems to get. He starts by talking about going into the future and time traveling and then goes on to talk about parallel universes and to travel to them. He then goes on to talk about invisibility and more. Whether you believe what Taylor has to say or you are skeptical about it, the video is rather entertaining to watch, and it may have some people wondering.
Researchers found surprisingly large quantities of mercury in the permafrost of the northern hemisphere. As temperatures rise and ice continues to melt, the mercury can be released, with significant consequences for both wildlife and mankind.

The tentacles of climate change are long and far-reaching. As temperatures rise, it brings along a number of unforeseen changes. Rising temperatures are threatening the oceans, causing more hurricanes, and even causing a coffee crisis. Now, we can add mercury to that long list of problems.
A new study reports that permafrost soils contain more mercury than the rest of the planet’s soils, atmosphere, and oceans combined.
In the new study, geologists assessed the concentrations in permafrost cores from Alaska. They found that permafrost soils contain two times more mercury than soils elsewhere in the world — an unexpected discovery with important consequences.
“This discovery is a game-changer,” said Paul Schuster, a hydrologist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Boulder, Colorado and lead author of the new study. “We’ve quantified a pool of mercury that had not been done previously, and the results have profound implications for better understanding the global mercury cycle.”
This wouldn’t normally be a very high concern, but the problem is that temperatures are now rising.

Mercury tends to bind with organic material in the soil and gets stuck with that soil. As it gets buried by sediment, it becomes frozen into permafrost, where it can remain for thousands of years. But if temperatures rise, all that can change. When temperatures rise and the permafrost melts, mercury isn’t fixed in place anymore. Instead of being frozen in the permafrost, it can also be transported by waters or microorganisms, or it can slowly seep on its own.
“There would be no environmental problem if everything remained frozen, but we know the Earth is getting warmer,” Schuster said. “Although measurement of the rate of permafrost thaw was not part of this study, the thawing permafrost provides a potential for mercury to be released—that’s just physics.”
Locally, the effects could be dramatic. From microorganisms, things can slowly move up the food chain, and like most toxins, they tend to gather higher up the food chain — and potentially end up on our plates.
The release of mercury could also have far-reaching global consequences. If released into the atmosphere, it could travel quickly at the mercy of air currents, possibly ending up as far as thousands of kilometers away.
But we don’t really know how much and how far the mercury can travel. Scientists are also unsure how much of the stored mercury would affect ecosystems if the permafrost were to thaw.
Schuster hopes to analyze that those issues in further studies, understanding how the mercury can affect humans and natural environments.
“24 percent of all the soil above the equator is permafrost, and it has this huge pool of locked-up mercury,” he said. “What happens if the permafrost thaws? How far will the mercury travel up the food chain? These are big-picture questions that we need to answer.”

Last year, one of the largest icebergs in history broke off broke off from the Larsen C ice. The massive 2,200-square-mile iceberg called A-68 has exposed an ecosystem that has been hidden beneath the ice for thousands of years. Now, a diverse team made up of scientists from nine research institutes around the world is urgently traveling to the area where the iceberg calved to probe the seabed before it’s too late.
A daring expedition and lifeforms removed from time
The researchers are supposed to leave from the Falkland Islands to the calving site on 21 February, where they will spend three weeks until March 2018 on board the research ship RRS James Clark Ross.
The A-68 iceberg is one of the largest ever observed on Earth. It’s about as big as the state of Delaware and holds four times more ice than what gets melted from Greenland’s ice sheet in a year. Scientists had been preparing for A-68’s split from Larsen C for months before the calving, ever since they witnessed a crack in the ice shelf extending over 100 miles in length.
Ice shelves encircle the Antarctic continent, extending thick floating ice from the land glaciers. Due to warming temperatures, Antarctica’s ice shelves are starting to thin or collapse. An iceberg such as A-68 won’t raise sea levels because the detached ice was already afloat in the ocean. That’s very good news since A-68 holds enough mass to raise global sea levels by 3 millimeters had the ice been added anew to the ocean. However, events such as these can destabilize the ice shelf.
If an Antarctic ice shelf such as Larsen C collapses, it can free the ice it’s currently holding back on the Antarctic Peninsula. It’s this terrestrial ice flowing out that can raise sea levels, and by no negligible amount. On the upside, icebergs such as A-68 can make room for human explorers who can now witness what ecosystems which have been isolated for thousands of years look like. Perhaps, they will find totally new, strange life forms that have adapted to total darkness, completely isolated from other ecosystems.
The team of daring researchers led by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will collect seafloor animals, microbes, plankton, and water samples from the now-exposed seafloor. They will record video footage and document whatever marine mammals and birds might have moved in the area.
The expedition is somewhat fortunate — it’s the first to benefit from an international agreement signed in 2016 by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). Under this agreement, exposed marine areas following the collapse or retreat of ice shelves in Antarctica, such as the one targeted by BAS, are designated Special Areas for Scientific Study.
“The calving of A-68 offers a new and unprecedented opportunity to establish an interdisciplinary scientific research programme in this climate-sensitive region. Now is the time to address fundamental questions about the sustainability of polar continental shelves under climate change,” said Professor David Vaughan, Science Director at BAS.
Vaughan and colleagues are in a hurry to get to the calving site and get to work as quickly as possible. They’re concerned that sunlight will alter the ecosystem too much, at least at the surface layer.
Large icebergs have broken off Antarctic ice shelves before, such as those that separated from the Larsen A and B ice shelves in 1995 and 2002, respectively. However, it took five to 12 years for expeditions to make it to those areas. When they got there, they reported sparse signs of life.
This time around, researchers hope to be there quick enough to possibly surprise some of the supposed alien-like life lurking in the depths.
“We need to be bold on this one. Larsen C is a long way south and there’s lots of sea ice in the area, but this is important science, so we will try our best to get the team where they need to be,” Vaughan said.

Cryptocurrency Miners Are 'Limiting' the Search for Alien Life Now

Everyday thousands of volunteers turn the power of their computers over to the SETI@home project in hopes of finding aliens among the stars. SETI@home—short for “Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence at Home”—is an experiment that uses people’s computers to increase the project’s processing power and analyze more radio signals from outer space.
The UC Berkeley-based SETI project only relies on volunteers for a portion of its computing power, however, and has its own computing installations at several telescopes. But the project team ran into problems recently when it tried to expand its operations by adding the latest and most powerful computers to two observatories. The team discovered, Berkeley SETI Research Center chief scientist Dan Werthimer told the BBC, that it couldn’t find the key computer component it needed: graphics processing units (GPUs).
That’s probably thanks to cryptocurrency miners. The same cards that make PC games look amazing and can crunch alien radio signal data can also “mine” (or generate) digital coins like Ethereum and Zcash, so cryptocurrency miners are buying them in bulk and leaving few behind for anyone else.
Searching the stars is intense work that “uses radio telescopes to listen for narrow-bandwidth radio signals from space.” Analyzing all of the data from these telescopes uses a lot of computing power. "We'd like to use the latest GPUs and we can't get 'em," Dan Werthimer, chief scientist of SETI, told the BBC. “That's limiting our search for extraterrestrials.”
“This is a new problem, it's only happened on orders we've been trying to make in the last couple of months,” Werthimer told the BBC. “We've got the money, we've contacted the vendors, and they say, 'we just don't have them'”
“I've bet everyone a cup of Starbucks that we might find ET within two dozen years,” Seth Shostak, fellow at the SETI Institute, told me in an email. But then, he isn’t using GPUs to conduct the search. “Using GPUs for SETI is certainly something we’ve been investigating for a long time," he said. "When it comes to finding the aliens, the more computer power you have, the quicker you can do the search. It’s like looking for buried treasure on a South Pacific island … if you can replace a teaspoon with a shovel, you might find it a lot quicker!”
At the moment, it seems that cryptocurrency miners are buying up all the shovels.
On February 15, 2013, a small incoming asteroid created a meteor – brighter than the sun – over Russia. It exploded in the air over the city of Chelyabinsk.
Five years ago today, a small asteroid with an estimated size of 65 feet (20 meters) entered Earth’s atmosphere. The February 15, 2013, asteroid was moving at 12 miles per second (~19 km/sec) when it struck the protective blanket of air around our planet, which did its job and caused the asteroid to explode. The bright, hot explosion took place only about 20 miles (30 km) above the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia and carried 20 to 30 times the energy of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. Its shock wave broke windows and knocked down parts of buildings in six Russian cities and caused some 1,500 people to seek medical attention for injuries, mostly from flying glass.
Large and small bodies from space strike Earth’s atmosphere continuously. The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization, which operates a network of sensors that monitors Earth around the clock listening for the infrasound signature of nuclear detonations, said in 2014 that it had recorded 26 atom-bomb-scale asteroid impacts to Earth’s atmosphere since 2000.
Still, the February 15, 2013 Russian superbolide was extremely powerful. It was later said to be the most powerful explosion caused by an asteroid since the Tunguska event, which flattened a wide area of forest and killed reindeer in Siberia in 1908.
The Tunguska event happened in a sparsely populated part of Siberia. It remained mysterious to scientists throughout the early part of the 20th century. By contrast, across a wide swath of Russia on February 15, 2013, dashboard cameras and amateur photographers captured images of the incoming meteor.

After the 2013 meteor exploded, it’s said that local residents and schoolchildren found meteorite fragments left in its aftermath, many located in snowdrifts. An informal market emerged for meteorite fragments.
A large number of small meteorites fell on areas west of Chelyabinsk, and, within hours of the visual sighting of the meteor, a 20-foot (6-meter) hole was discovered on the frozen surface of Lake Chebarkul in the Russian Ural Mountains. Scientists from the Ural Federal University collected 53 samples from around the hole that same day.
In June 2013, Russian scientists reported further investigation by magnetic imaging below the location of the ice hole in Lake Chebarkul. They had identified a larger meteorite buried in sediments on the lake floor.
Following an operation lasting a number of weeks, on October 15, 2013, a large fragment of the meteorite was lifted from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul. It had a total mass of 1,442 pounds (654 kg) and to date remains the largest found fragment of the Chelyabinsk meteorite.

NASA satellites were also able to track the meteor plume in Earth’s atmosphere. As the video below describes, they tracked and studied the meteor plume for months.
Bottom line: On February 15, 2013, a small asteroid created a bright meteor over Russia, which exploded over the city of Chelyabinsk.
Seriously though: what is causing all of these unexplained booms all across North America? From coast to coast, the sounds of thunderous explosions in the sky have rattled windows and shaken homes without any definitive official explanation. Is something strange going on overhead? Then again, when is something strange ever not going on overhead?
Case in point.
The first of this week’s unexplained booms happened on February 6th in Midwest City just outside of Oklahoma City. Residents described what sounded like dynamite going off as their homes shook violently. One Midwest City woman, Donna Hood, described the ensuing vibration to local news as earthquake-like:
We thought we’d had an earthquake and we waited and looked on the news and everywhere else and nobody posted anything. So, we had no idea what it was.
Local meteorologists, meanwhile, say there’s nothing to worry about, just a case of the ol’ cryoseism, or frost quake. These rare seismic events occur when groundwater tables freeze rapidly and expand against one another underground, cracking under immense pressure.
Cryoseisms can sometimes be powerful enough to crack the earth.
Two days later, police in Wheat Ridge, Colorado received numerous calls after homeowners heard a loud boom in the night. Residents of the Denver suburb told police they in fact regularly feel and hear what sounds like an unexplained explosion at 3:00 a.m., mostly on weekends. According to CBS4 Denver, Wheat Ridge residents are left frightened and mystified by the lack of answers. Some believe the noise could be caused by something industrial like a malfunctioning electrical transformer, while others worry the noise is “something not so easily explained.”
Local news eats this stuff up. As do I, of course.
Wheat Ridge Police department spokesperson Sara Spaulding says police are likewise baffled:
We’ve had descriptions that are everything from a transformer blew, to a sonic boom that you might hear with an airplane passing overhead or a jet passing overhead, fireworks sometimes, those loud booms without the crackly noises associated. The challenge for us is that there isn’t any evidence of what this could be.
Are the Wheat Ridge or Oklahoma City booms related to the other booms heard and felt around the country? What is behind this phenomenon? I’m going with secret military activity. The world sure seems to be getting weird and dangerous again.
Nothing attracts conspiracy theories like a SpaceX launch. From UFO sightings at failed launches to rumors of corporate espionage, all kinds of speculation have been cast at the enigmatic Elon Musk and his sometimes secretive private space program. After Musk and co. recently launched the first Falcon Heavy rocket into space carrying Musk’s red Tesla roadster and its supposed empty spacesuit driver, the internet realized that, well, you know there could be a body in that suit and we’d never know. But come on, would Elon do something like that? I mean, if anyone had the cojones to put a dead body in orbit on live TV, it’s that dude. The Falcon Heavy launch didn’t just contain the empty spacesuit, though. Riding along beside the convertible was a disc of quartz crystal containing a hologram upon which was etched a massive library of data encoded using some of the most advanced storage methods possible, all designed to last billions of years. Strangest of all, no one really knows what exactly is written on them.
I bet whoever is in this spacesuit knows.
The disc is part of what is being called the Arch, created by the The Arch Mission Foundation, a non-profit group which statestheir goal is to “permanently archive human knowledge for thousands to billions of years. We exist to preserve and disseminate humanity’s knowledge across time and space, for the benefit of future generations.” To do this, the foundation helped develop a “5D optical storage” method using discs of quartz crystals inscribed with laser nanostructuring to create afreaking hologram inside the structure of the crystal disc. Yeah, we’re living in the future. These discs will be readable 14 billion years and can hold 360 terabytes of data, or around 7,000 Blu-Ray discs.
Plus they look like they’re straight out of Blade Runner.
According to the Arch foundation, the first arch disc contains Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, an epic series of deeply philosophical science-fiction novels. Throughout those novels, the protagonist seeks to preserve humanity’s knowledge in the face of an impending galactic disaster. The Arch Mission foundation says that we live in an uncertain age where planetary chaos and disaster seems ever more likely. Thus, the need to preserve the collected knowledge of humankind is dire. And, of course, shoot it into space on a really big rocket that goes boom. Oh, and in the most American fashion possible, by putting it orbit alongside a red convertible piloted by a single spacesuit, making it the most conspicuous thing in space possible:
This Arch library will orbit the Sun for at least millions of years alongside Elon’s Tesla Roadster. The Roadster will likely be the oddest object in the solar system, and thus is the perfect place to put an Arch library so that it can be noticed and retrieved in the distant future.
Of course, it might just look like a rock to any passing aliens. It is made of metals. While the goals of the Arch Mission Foundation sounds well-intentioned (at least on the surface), calling any set of data the “collected knowledge of humankind” makes you really wonder who chose what to include in that library and what not to. The group’s founder has stated he wants to “put Wikipedia in space.” Sounds great. I’m sure the Pirahã people of the Amazon will love having their entire existence being summed up in 1600 words. The photos on the “crew” page of the foundation’s website don’t exactly represent the collective demographics of the entire human race, if you know what I mean.
Is this really representative of the entirety human experience?
It also makes you wonder what could be on those discs that we don’t know about. The entire Foundation series wouldn’t take up more than a few hundred megabytes, tops. What about the other hundreds of terabytes? Is some group trying to seed space with a very specific vision of what human knowledge should be preserved in space and create a new human civilization where you can, I don’t know, marry your attractive cousins? Is Elon Musk trying to send a message to his home planet after landing here and benevolently giving us the technology of the future like Thomas Jerome Newton in The Man Who Fell to Earth? Is he going to fly away with all our water?
David Bowie could have easily played him in a movie, too.
I mean, if anyone is an alien, it’s that dude. It’s like he’s not even trying to hide it anymore. Or at least a Bond villain who hasn’t had his horrific accident that turns him evil yet. We’re still just living in his origin story.
This UFO cloaked in a cloud was seen over Crete last week. You can see that its breaking through the clouds. Don't be fooled by these cloaked craft. Aliens are highly intelligent and often believe that human intelligence is incredibly inferior to them. Thus, humans will often assume the cloud is just a cloud. However, we at UFO Sightings Daily know different. Here it almost looks like an invasion. Very dark, almost sinister looking.

Nixon told Merritt that only he and Kissinger knew of the letter's existence and it should not fall into the hands of the FBI or the CIA.
Nixon developed a great trust with Merritt who he had assigned as an undercover operative to the Ultra Secret Huston Plan Program, a Covert Intelligence Unit run right out of the White House to perform Black Ops and Surveillance against Nixon's Political enemies.
During his long history of Clandestine work for Intelligence Agencies Merritt was developed as a Covert Agent and a Sex Operative to get compromising material for Control Files to Blackmail Senators and Congressmen.
Merritt had been used by the CIA, FBI and the ATF as an Deep Undercover Informant and found himself under the spotlight during the Watergate Hearings and was later featured in the New York Times. Eventually Merritt was forced to go underground and to keep silent in order to stay alive.
The Special National Archives Letter
In a special twist on behalf of Merritt, Former Watergate Lawyer Douglas Caddy has sent a letter to the National Archives with the promise of directions to President Nixon's ET Time Capsule that Merritt is convinced is still where Nixon placed it in 1972.
The conditions laid out in the letter instruct the National Archives they can take possession of the letter when it's found as long as they read it aloud when it's discovered and distribute openly it to the public.

“From the air, Teotihuacan’s city layout mysteriously resembles a computer circuit board with two massive processor chips, which in this case are represented by the Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon.
The ancient city of Teotihuacan is one of the oldest Pre-Columbian cities in the American continent.
Built by an unknown civilization, the mysterious city was found devoured by vegetations when the ancient Aztecs arrived.
Excavations have shown that the structures of Teotihuacan have abnormal amount of Mica embedded into them, a fact that raises numerous questions.

Teotihuacan, the city of the gods
Teotihuacan from Nahuatl: Teōtihuācan, is the ”place where men become gods,” the “place where the gods were made, or city of the gods”. The name of Nahuatl origin was used by the Mexica, Aztecs, to identify this city built by a civilization before them and which was already in ruins when the Mexica saw it for the first time.
To date the name given by its original inhabitants is unknown.
The remains of the city are located northeast of the Valley of Mexico.
The city is shrouded in mystery for a number of reasons. Despite the fact that it was one of the most influential cities in the American continent, we know very little about it. In fact, the origins of Teotihuacán are still the subject of research among experts.
Around the beginning of the Christian era, Teotihuacan was a village that gained importance as a center of worship in the Anáhuac basin.
The first significant constructions are believed to have been erected at that time, as shown by excavations performed at the Pyramid of the Moon.
The city grew in importance during the Classic Period (3rd to 7th centuries AD).

At that stage, the city was an important commercial and political node that reached an area of almost 21 km2, with a population ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 inhabitants.
The influence of Teotihuacan was felt in all the directions of Mesoamerica, as shown by the discoveries in cities such as Tikal, Monte Albán, and other sites that had an important relationship with Teotihuacan.
Scholars are unsure of the ethnic identity of the first inhabitants of Teotihuacan.
Among the candidates are the Totonacs, and the Nahuas.

The most recent hypotheses suggest that Teotihuacan was a cosmopolitan city in whose flourishing groups of diverse ethnic origin were involved.
However, these are mere assumptions.
As noted previously, the identity of the people who founded Teotihuacan is a mystery.
Teotihuacan had long been abandoned before the arrival of the Spaniards to Mesoamerica. This means that the few references to the city that were preserved in the historical sources produced in the years after the Conquest of Mexico do not speak properly about the inhabitants of Teotihuacan but of the representation of those who lived after the Teotihuacan collapse.
The Nahua informants of Bernardino de Sahagún thought that Teotihuacan was the place where the gods met to give rise to Nahui Ollin, the Fifth Sun according to native mythology, a period which illuminates the contemporary era.
According to colonial sources, the Nahuas thought that Teotihuacan was built by the quinametzin, a race of giants that populated the world during the previous era and whose survivors hid away.
The temples, the pyramids of the city were imagined as massive tombs of the Gods who founded the city, a sacred place where after death, men would become gods.
For reasons that have not yet been fully elucidated, Teotihuacan collapsed towards the middle of the 8th century, giving rise to the Mesoamerican Epiclassic Period.
Teotihuacan was also apparently built mimicking the three stars of Orion.
According to archaeologists, the advanced design of Teotihuacansuggests that the ancient builders had the knowledge not only of architecture but of complex mathematical and astronomical sciences. One of the most amazing details about Teotihuacan, and what makes it different from other ancient sites is that when observed from the air, Teotihuacan’s city layout strangely resembles a computer circuit board with two large processor chips— the Sun Pyramid and the Moon Pyramid.
Researchers have also found numerous and remarkable similarities to the Great Pyramids of Egypt.
However, if the idea of Teotihuacan resembling a modern computer board doesn’t arouse your imagination, perhaps large amount of mica embedded into the monuments of Teotihuacan will.
Archaeologists have found that Teotihuacan’s structures are embedded with mica.
This mineral is found 3,000 miles away in Brazil and is found in nearly all buildings, housing complexes, temples and along the roads of Teotihuacan.
Excavations have revealed that the pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan contained considerable amounts of mica in layers up to 30 cm.
Certainly, Mica was not included in these constructions for decoration because you couldn’t actually see it, so it is clear that this mineral was incorporated into the monuments for another purpose.
Mica is stable when exposed to electricity, light, moisture, and extreme temperatures. It has superior electrical properties as an insulator and as a dielectric, and can support an electrostatic field while dissipating minimal energy in the form of heat; it can be split very thin (0.025 to 0.125 millimeters or thinner) while maintaining its electrical properties, has a high dielectric breakdown, is thermally stable to 500 °C, and is resistant to corona discharge.
At Teotihuacan, we basically have a massive ancient city, whose builders are unknown to history, with pyramids and surrounding structures that resemble a computer board when seen from the air.
In addition to that, we know that the builders of the ancient city incorporated Mica into the structures of the city. Mica wasn’t placed there for aesthetic purposes, which raises numerous questions. Is there perhaps an otherworldly influence behind Teotihuacan? And, is it possible that the entire city was not only built to serve as city, but to harness some sort of energy?

A study published on Monday noted that the rise in sea level is accelerating and could reach 66 centimeters by the end of the century, enough to cause significant problems in coastal cities and put millions of lives at risk.
The annual rate of increase in sea level, which is three millimeters, could reach 10 millimeters per year by 2100, according to a report published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS).
According to the study, based on 25 years of satellite data, the findings are “more or less consistent with the projections of the fifth evaluation report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)”.
The author of the analysis, Steve Nerem, said the acceleration, driven mainly by the accelerated melting of Greenland and Antarctica, “has the potential to double the rise in sea level by 2100, compared to projections that calculate a constant rate: more than 60 centimeters instead of 30.“
The professor of aerospace engineering sciences at the University of Colorado said that “it is almost certainly a conservative estimate.”
Climate change causes sea level rise in two ways. First, the higher concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increase the temperature of the water, so the warm water expands.
“This thermal expansion in the oceans has already contributed to half of the seven centimeters average increase in sea level in the last quarter of the century,” explained the researcher.
In addition, the oceans rise with the increasing flow of water because of ice that melts rapidly at the poles.
“This article highlights the important role that satellite records can play in the validation of climate model projections,” added co-author John Fasullo, a climate researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in the United States.
The scientists who were part of the study also come from the University of South Florida, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Old Dominion University and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Melting, Melting and more melting
If sea levels rising isn’t a danger, researchers have recently also highlighted another worrisome fact.
Scientists warn that climate change could accelerate the release of toxic Mercury.
As melting permafrost releases mercury, eventually some of it will make it into the food chain—and into animals such as the Alaskan caribou. As noted by National Geographic, “in some forms, mercury is a powerful neurotoxin, and in children it can harm brain development, affecting cognition, memory, language and even motor and visual skills. Even in adults, excessive amounts can hamper vision, speech and muscle movements, compromise the reproductive and immune systems, and cause cardiovascular problems.”
If global warming ends up melting the permafrost—the permanently frozen surface layer of the northern hemisphere—it could trigger a global ecological catastrophe, since this area contains more than 15 million gallons (58 million liters) of mercury buried according to a group of researchers.

Located 45 miles west of La Paz high in the Andes mountains, lie the mystifying ancient ruins of Puma Punku.
The megalithic stones found there are considered among the largest on the planet. Some boulders measure up to 26 feet long and weighing more than 100 tons each.
Puma Punku is a massive temple complex part of the Tiwanaku Site near Tiwanaku, Bolivia.
Tiwanaku is vital in Incan legends since it is believed to be the site where the world was created by the Gods.
Puma Punku, in turn, means “The Door of the Puma.”
As noted by the Andean specialist, Binghamton University Anthropology professor W. H. Isbell, a radiocarbon date was obtained from organic material from lowermost and oldest layer of mound-fill forming the Puma Punku. This segment was deposited during the first of three construction epochs and dates the initial construction of the Puma Punku at 1510 ±25 B.P.
Puma Punku is so unusual in the way that it was constructed, shaped and positioned, that many scholars consider it is the most intriguing ancient site on the planet.
Mainstream experts believe the blocks found at Puma Punku were formed by hand with primitive stone tools.
However, some researchers point to the intricate stonework as evidence of the use of advanced precision technology.
How could primitive people, living thousands of years ago, have produced such flawless stonework, without access to any form of technology? Did they use sticks and stones?
Or, is it possible that the ancient constructors of Puma Punku manufactured the megalithic stones with advanced technology?
Perhaps with the use of precision tools that could have facilitated them to achieve these marvels of engineering and construction, displaying clean cuts, and precise angles.
If we look at the stones at Puma Punku carefully, you can see amazing intricate stonework, almost as if they used machine tools or even lasers.
It’s incredible.
At Puma Punku you will find mystifying stones with perfect right angles, and some rocks at Puma Punku have small drill holes that were evenly spaced along the groove. This has driven many authors to suggest that power tools may have been used on this unusual block of stone.
After years of research, archaeologists have concluded how the massive stones were cut at quarries nearly one hundred kilometers away and then rolled to Puma Punku on logs, supposedly.
However, what scholars seem to forget and what researchers rarely talk about is that Puma Punku is positioned at an altitude of 12,800 feet. This means the ancient complex was built above the natural tree line, meaning that NO trees grew in that area, which in turn signifies that no trees were cut down in order to use wooden rollers. This leads us to the following question: What did they use?
How did ancient mankind transport these supermassive blocks of stone to their destination?
Mainstream scholars have too many questions about the technology used by its builders, the transportation, and logistics, etc..
It is difficult to believe that all of this was accomplished without the use of power tools and sophisticated means of transportation.
This is precisely why ancient astronaut theorists and many authors say that transporting these massive blocks of granite from their quarries and moving them to Puma Punku would have required some type of advanced technology, huge lifting vehicles. In other words, technologies and means which ancient civilizations simply did not possess at that time, or at least that is what we think.
Puma Punku is without a doubt one of those places where, when you observe incredible ancient constructions, shaped with that much perfection, your imagination lights up. There are so many possibilities at one point, and conventional archaeological explanations just do not fit in one’s logic at that point.
In 1549, while seeking the capital of the ancient Inca Empire, Spanish conquistadors led by Pedro Cieza de León crossed into Bolivia and discovered the ruins of an ancient settlement called Tiahuanaco.
Located less than a quarter-mile northeast of Puma Punku, scientists believe that Tiahuanaco was once the center of a prosperous ancient civilization with more than 40,000 inhabitants.
Tiahuanaco is reasonably the greatest Native American civilization that many people haven’t heard of.
It was one of the most important predecessors of the ancient Inca and their history. They accomplished the unimaginable in architecture, in political development, in agriculture, and in many other craft industries which were on a very high level. Most scholars agree that Tiahuanaco was mysteriously abandoned around 1100 AD, just like other ancient civilizations like the Maya.
In the 1960s, the Bolivian government excavated the Subterranean Temple at Tiahuanaco. Inside the walls of the squared sunken courtyard are hundreds of stone heads with a diverse range of features. It’s a mixture of different races.
It’s believed that depicted inside the walls of the squared sunken courtyard are all the races of mankind, even elongated skulls. Furthermore, we have people wearing turbans, people with broad noses, people with thin noses, we have depictions of people with thick lips, people with thin lips, and some of the statues are particularly unusual since they do not seem to represent the native population.
In other words, and as put by many researchers who have visited the ancient site, they seem to symbolize every type and shape of human heads existing on the planet.
Two of them, which are very intriguing, is white in color, look very much like grey alien heads.
Researchers say that a large statue at the center of the sunken temple depicts the creator god, known as Viracocha.
Was Viracocha an ancient alien God?
However, Viracocha is depicted with extremely rare facial features.
The ancient inhabitants and builders of Tiahuanaco depicted their most prominent god with features unlike their own.
Viracocha is depicted having a beard and a mustache, and that is a very unusual thing because American Indians do not have beards and mustaches.
One of the most significant archaeological artifacts ever found in Tiahuanaco is the Fuente Magna Bowl.
It’s a ceramic bowl, and it has Sumerian cuneiform and Proto-Sumerian hieroglyphic script written on it.
But wait a minute, these two civilizations weren’t anywhere near one another!
In fact, they were separated by more than 8.000 miles, and yet this draws a direct connection between the ancient Sumerians and Tiahuanaco, and Puma Punku.
The idea of Sumerian writing exists at Puma Punku, and Tiahuanaco would seem to relate to the late Zecharia Sitchin and his ideas that the Sumerians were interacting with these “space beings” called the Annunaki.
Interestingly, in that case, the Annunaki were in Sumeria but also at Puma Punku and Tiahuanaco in South America.
In the Central Intelligence Agency’s declassified archives is a formerly SECRET memo, dated February 17th, 1967, from the Chief of the CIA’s Technical Intelligence Division entitled “Photo Analysis of UFO Photography.”
That memo served as a response to a request by the Deputy Director of The National Photographic Interpretation Center to analyze photographic evidence of what was purported to be an unidentified flying object, provided by the Aerial Phenomenon Office of the Foreign Technology Department at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
Of the nine photographs referenced in the memo, only three remain in the declassified document: two low-resolution, photocopied scans …
and an artist’s interpretation of the UFO. A fourth photo of a helicopter is referenced but not included.
The first two photos were taken by Major Raymond Nyls of the U.S. Air Force as part of an initial investigation of the UFO “exposure station.” Nyls visited the site on the shore of Lake St. Clair, Michigan in an attempt to duplicate the exact position of the camera in the original photographs. The investigation provided measurements of the area and the surrounding objects in the hopes of providing an accurate scale to estimate the size of the UFO.
Due to an overall lack of data, the analysis was heavily based on the measurements Nyls made during his visit to the exposure site. The accuracy of the report was dependent on the accuracy of his measurements. Investigators operated under a number of assumptions, the first being that the UFO was 0.25 miles away from the camera. Among the other assumptions were that Nyl’s measurements were accurate, the photographs were in full format, the UFO was circular, and that adjustments to the camera’s focal length were unimportant to the analysis.
The memo contains multiple references to the shaky foundation of the data, admitting that their entire investigation of the photographs was built on estimates and faith in Nyls’ accuracy. Due to the lack of solid quantitative data, the results were inconclusive.
Nyls was no stranger to photographic UFO investigations. In fact, according to The Detroit News, a month after the investigation at Lake St. Clair, Nyls recreated a photograph of a UFO taken by brothers Grant and Dan Jaroslaw of Harrison Township, MI using a block of wood hanging from a swingset. A lie detector failed to support the brothers’ story.

Crypto-currency craze ‘hinders search for alien life’
Scientists listening out for broadcasts by extra-terrestrials are struggling to get the computer hardware they need, thanks to the crypto-currency mining craze, a radio-astronomer has said.
Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) wants to expand operations at two observatories.
However, it has found that key computer chips are in short supply.
“We’d like to use the latest GPUs [graphics processing units]… and we can’t get ’em,” said Dan Werthimer.
Demand for GPUs has soared recently thanks to crypto-currency mining.
“That’s limiting our search for extra-terrestrials, to try to answer the question, ‘Are we alone? Is there anybody out there?’,” Dr Werthimer told the BBC.
“This is a new problem, it’s only happened on orders we’ve been trying to make in the last couple of months.”
Mining a currency such as Bitcoin or Ethereum involves connecting computers to a global network and using them to solve complex mathematical puzzles.
This forms part of the process of validating transactions made by people who use the currency.
As a reward for this work, the miners receive a small crypto-currency payment, making it potentially profitable.
GPUs are high-performance chips and aren’t just used for powering video games – they may be stacked together by Bitcoin miners, radio-astronomers or others interested in processing large amounts of data for certain applications.
“At Seti we want to look at as many frequency channels as we possibly can because we don’t know what frequency ET will be broadcasting on and we want to look for lots of different signal types – is it AM or FM, what communication are they using?” explained Dr Werthimer, who is chief scientist at the Berkeley Seti Research Center.
“That takes a lot of computing power.”
He added that at some telescopes, Seti has around 100 GPUs crunching data from large listening arrays.
These arrays can pick up the faintest of radio frequencies that have been flung across our solar system from elsewhere in the universe – often from natural phenomena such as collapsing stars.
Seti is currently trying to improve its capacity for analysing such data at two observatories – Green Bank in West Virginia and Parkes in Australia.
But the institute has been hit by the GPU shortage.
“We’ve got the money, we’ve contacted the vendors, and they say, ‘we just don’t have them’,” said Dr Werthimer.
Earlier this year, there were reports that video gamers had been hit by a sudden rise in the cost of GPUs, thanks in particular to a rise in Ethereum mining, which can be done with chips aimed at consumers.
At the time, major chip-maker Nvidia said that retailers should make arrangements to make sure gamers’ demands were met.

Other radio-astronomers have been affected.
A group looking for evidence of the earliest stars in the universe was recently shocked to see that the cost of the GPUs it wanted had doubled.
“We’re in the process of expanding our telescope – we got a grant from the National Science Foundation here in the United States to do so,” said Aaron Parsons at the University of California at Berkeley.
Prof Parsons’ radio telescope array, the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionisation Array (Hera) project, is an American, British and South African venture located in South Africa’s western plains.
It has been designed to listen to low frequency radio waves emitted by the reionising hydrogen gas that permeated the universe before the first stars and galaxies formed.
GPUs are needed in order to bring together data from Hera’s many small radio telescopes – this synthesises a much larger array, offering an especially wide field of view peering out into the universe.
Three months ago, the Hera team had budgeted for a set of GPUs that cost around $500 ($360) – the price has since doubled to $1,000.
“We’ll be able to weather it but it is coming out of our contingency budget.” added Prof Parsons.
“We’re buying a lot of these things, it’s going to end up costing about $32,000 extra.”
He also said he was concerned that future work could even be stopped in its tracks, should the GPU shortage worsen.
Mining’s meteoric rise
Thanks in part to a recent boom in the price of crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, mining crypto-currencies has never been more popular.
While Bitcoin miners have largely moved on to specialised “Asic” chips that have been designed from scratch to support mining, it’s still possible to use GPUs on the Ethereum mining network to lucrative ends, according to cyber-security expert Matthew Hickey at Hacker House.
“[You can] use GPUs effectively to turn a small profit, you’re not going to make millions but if you put 12 or 24 GPUs together, you’ll make back the cost in six months,” he told the BBC.
GPUs are versatile, he added, pointing out that cyber-security experts sometimes use them for password-cracking experiments, in which computers make many millions of attempts at breaking into a system.
But Mr Hickey has also noticed that GPUs are now being sold on sites such as Ebay at inflated prices.
“It’s becoming increasingly difficult to find suppliers and cards,” he said.

Glowing red/orange objects stayed in the same place for 30 min. Colors went from dark orange to light orange from side to side and changed sequence. It started out with two. Then three. Then around6-7, Then would go back to smaller, Then start over again
8:00 pm, Tuesday, February 13th. We were driving home from the grocery store, on a road through the mountains. We noticed a series of orbs moving horizontally across the sky in front of us. Each orb would light up, and then would start to fade. As one would start to darken, the light next to it would light up, before they would all disappear. The first sighting of the same phenomenon, the lights appeared to be stacked in two horizontal rows, but went to only one row afterward. We pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, as this happened again, and continued to watch. At one point, the orbs lit up and branched out to the left and right, before turning back and going toward the middle again. We turned the vehicle around and drove back toward the store, turned back and watched again. The video was taken, during the last series of light orbs. After that, the sky went black and nothing else was witnessed.

Three eyewitness accounts of mysterious UFO sightings that have never been explained have emerged for the first time.
Never-before-heard reports describe the close encounters, all of which happened in the north of England in the 1980s.
UFO researchers including investigator Philip Mantle looked into all three cases at the time – but they were left to lie on file as no explanation for them could be found.
While most sightings are quickly and easily identified by experts, the three cases left Mr Mantle ‘scratching his head’.
He said: ‘No aircraft, balloons or meteorological phenomenon could account for them and this is a time long before Chinese lanterns.
‘There are of course some similarities in these sightings the most notable one being the lack of any noise made by the objects. Whether this is relevant or significant is debateable but it’s a curiosity nonetheless.
‘The one thing that is for certain is that UFOs were the last thing on the mind of any of these witnesses prior to their observations.’

Over the span of eight minutes – an unusually long time for a UFO sighting – a woman claimed she saw a diamond-shaped object in the sky about 200-300 feet above her.
She told the researchers that she saw two round red lights as she walked to her car at 7.30pm, adding that there was no noise as the object moved through the air.
Describing the scene, she said: ‘I could not see the lights as it moved overhead but I could see the underneath of the object.
‘This object was very large and seemed to be very heavy looking. I kept wondering how something so big and heavy looking could move so slowly and not make a noise.
‘I kept watching and took in as much detail as I could. The object was huge and its underneath had what looked like round-headed studs.
‘The object moved overhead and I kept watching it until it was almost out of sight at which point it seemed to tilt upwards and shoot off at a great speed and was gone.’

A couple described seeing a ‘star-shaped’ object
John Stoddard and his family were about to leave the cottage where they had spent a holiday on New Year’s Eve, 1986.
He was gazing at the stars at 7.22am when he noticed one of the ‘stars’ moving – in the direction of the family from over hills in the distance.
Mr Stoddard was joined by his wife – who also reported seeing the same object – it was just above some trees in a nearby field.
The couple described the object flying up to them at a low speed of about 5-10mph, and opening up into a giant triangle with white lights surrounding it.
Mr Stoddard, who said it was the size of a double-decker-bus, said both he and his wife were excited but also scared by what they saw.
The object moved slowly out of view of the family over the moors.

John Doherty was on one of his late night dog walks at about 10pm he first noticed shimmering lights in the distance, through broken clouds.
He claimed to have seen them passing in and out of the clouds, and said they may have been rotating, causing them to ‘shimmer’.
Mr Doherty added that each object had three bright lights on its underside, that were so powerful they shone through the clouds.
He watched them until they disappeared after about 10 seconds.

De Amerikaanse marine kreeg technologieën van een buitenaards ras om in te zetten tegen de nazi’s en andere aliens. Dat stelt de Amerikaanse schrijver William Tompkins, die in de jaren vijftig en zestig voor de marine heeft gewerkt.
Toen hij was gestationeerd op het San Diego Naval Air Station had hij naar eigen zeggen toegang tot geheime informatie, meldt zender CNN-News18.
Tompkins, die vaartuigen ontwierp voor de marine, schrijft dat de technologie bedoeld was om de planeet te beschermen tegen invasies van zogeheten Reptilians.

Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog had hij naar eigen zeggen contact met Amerikaanse spionnen die in topgeheime ruimtevaartinstallaties werkten.
Volgens de spionnen hadden de nazi’s de hand weten te leggen op blauwdrukken voor antizwaartekrachtmachines, straalwapens en andere wapens van de Reptilians, claimt de schrijver.
De VS werd geholpen door de Nordics, een ander buitenaards ras, die ook allerlei geavanceerde technologieën tot hun beschikking hadden.

In het boek Selected by Extraterrestrials van Tompkins zijn schetsen te zien van ruimteschepen die hij heeft ontworpen, waarvan sommige enkele kilometers lang zijn.
Hij beweert dat de Amerikaanse marine in de jaren zeventig is begonnen met de bouw van deze schepen.
Het project heette naar verluidt Solar Warden en oorlogen met de Reptilians woeden nog altijd voort, aldus de zender.

The first discovered interstellar visitor to our solar system has had a violent past, which is causing it to tumble around chaotically, a Queen's University Belfast scientist has discovered.
'Oumuamua flew through our solar system in October and was originally thought to be a comet, then it was later revealed as a cucumber-shaped asteroid.
Since October, Dr. Wes Fraser, alongside Dr. Pedro Lacerda, Dr. Michele Bannister, and Professor Alan Fitzsimmons, all from Queen's University Belfast's School of Mathematics and Physics, have been analysing the brightness measurements of the object. They have been working with an international team, including Dr. Petr Pravec from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Dr. Colin Snodgrass from The Open University and Igor Smolic ́from the University of Belgrade.
Straight away, they discovered that 'Oumuamua wasn't spinning periodically like most of the small asteroids and bodies that we see in our solar system. Instead, it is tumbling, or spinning chaotically, and could have been for many billions of years.
While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for this, it is thought that 'Oumuamua impacted with another asteroid before it was fiercely thrown out of its system and into interstellar space.
Dr. Fraser explains: "Our modeling of this body suggests the tumbling will last for many billions of years to hundreds of billions of years before internal stresses cause it to rotate normally again.
"While we don't know the cause of the tumbling, we predict that it was most likely sent tumbling by an impact with another planetesimal in its system, before it was ejected into interstellar space."
Until now, scientists had been puzzled that 'Oumuamua's colour varied between measurements. However, Dr. Fraser's research has now revealed that its surface is spotty and that when the long face of the cucumber-shaped object was facing telescopes on Earth it was largely red but the rest of the body was neutral coloured, like dirty snow.
Dr. Fraser explains: "Most of the surface reflects neutrally but one of its long faces has a large red region. This argues for broad compositional variations, which is unusual for such a small body."
The research findings, which have been published in Nature Astronomy, have helped to build a more accurate profile of 'Oumuamua.
"We now know that beyond its unusual elongated shape, this space cucumber had origins around another star, has had a violent past, and tumbles chaotically because of it. Our results are really helping to paint a more complete picture of this strange interstellar interloper. It is quite unusual compared to most asteroids and comets we see in our own solar system," comments Dr. Fraser.
Since 'Oumuamua was spotted in October, a team of researchers at Queen's University Belfast have been analysing the object in detail. This is the third paper to be published by their team, which includes Ph.D. students Meabh Hyland and Thomas Seccull. Dr. Wes Fraser, Dr. Michele Bannister, Dr. Pedro Lacerda and Professor Alan Fitzsimmons have been supported by funding from the Science and Technology Facilities Council for their research.

The advantages of developing space capabilities are manifold. Satellites facilitate military and civilian communications. Human spaceflight garners international prestige, while also providing opportunities for cutting-edge research. Experiments conducted in space have resulted in numerous breakthroughs that have been used to address medical, environmental, and technological challenges back on Earth.
China seeks to enhance its capacity for scientific and technological innovation by building a large modular space station. Chinese leaders also hope that research conducted on the Chinese Space Station (CSS) will support their long-term goals for space exploration, including missions to the Moon and Mars. This page offers insight into the development of the CSS, compares China’s space station with those of other countries, and explores how China may use manned space missions to bolster domestic innovation.
China Achieves Human Spaceflight
More than 60 countries have space programs that engage in activities ranging from the development of dual-use satellites to lunar exploration. Only three of these states have independently sent humans into space. The former Soviet Union and the United States achieved human spaceflight in 1961 against the backdrop of the Cold War space race. Four decades later, China joined this elite group with the 2003 launch of Lt. Col. Yang Liwei into Earth’s orbit on the Shenzhou-5 (“Divine Ship-5”). Yang orbited the Earth 14 times over a period of 21.5 hours.
China formally launched its manned space program, known as Project 921, in September 1992. Chief objectives of the multi-phase Project 921 include achieving human spaceflight and developing and operating what Wu Ping, deputy director of China’s Manned Space Agency (CMS), has called a “permanent” manned Chinese space station.

A critical aspect of Project 921 is the development of Tiangong (“Heavenly Vessel”) space laboratories that serve as critical testbeds for gaining the technical know-how for operating the CSS. The 8.5 metric ton (MT) Tiangong-1 launched in September 2011 and enabled Chinese astronauts – or “taikonauts” – to practice rendezvous and dockingmaneuvers and carry out short-term missions in space. Despite losing communicationwith the space module in March 2016, Chinese engineers applied lessons learned to improve the design of its successor, the Tiangong-2, which launched in September 2016.
The Tiangong-2 features a greater capacity for scientific experimentation and is therefore considered by Wu Ping a laboratory “in the true sense of the word.” According to China’s 2016 white paper on space activities, the Tiangong-2offers a platform for China to master key technologies, such as cargo transport and replenishment, necessary for operating a permanent space station. Due to improvements in living quarters and life-support infrastructure, the module was able to host the two-man Shenzhou-11 crew for 30 days in late 2016. This marked China’s longest crewed mission to date. A third Tiangong space lab is slated for launch in the coming years and will be capable of supporting three taikonautsfor 40-day intervals.
Following from the success of the Tiangong missions, it has been reported that China is now in the process of building the core CSS module. Wang Zhongyang, a spokesman affiliated with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, revealed in April 2016 that China will launch this module around 2018 and conclude construction of the CSS by 2022.
Designing the Chinese Space Station
If successfully completed, the CSS will be roughly one-sixth the mass of the International Space Station (ISS) and half the size of the decommissioned Russian Mir Space Station. The Chinese station is expected to have a mass between 60 and 70 MT – this number may increase with vessels or additional modules docked – while the ISS has a mass over 420 MT, and Mir had a mass of approximately 130 MT.
The smaller size of the CSS may lend itself to operational efficiency and cost savings, but it comes with significant trade-offs. Reduced capacity for astronauts, equipment, and research may limit the utility of the station as a laboratory for scientific discovery. While Chinese engineers have noted that the station could be expanded via international cooperation, the CSS is designed to host three taikonauts for 3 to 6-month intervals (or six-person crews for shorter periods).
Although more recently constructed than either Mir or the ISS, the CSS is expected have a shorter lifespan. Zhu Zongpeng, chief architect of China’s space lab system, indicated in 2016 that the Chinese space station may stay in orbit for around ten years. Mir remained operational for 15 years before Russian controllers guided its descent into the South Pacific in 2001, and the ISS, which launched in 1998, will have functioned for 26 years if deorbited as planned in 2024.
In terms of design, the CSS is likely to resemble Mir. Both the Chinese and Russian space stations were designed to feature a core module and multiple attaching components. By contrast, the ISS bears an “integrated truss structure” that supports dozens of payloads delivered by fifteen partner nations.
The CSS’s core module, dubbed the Tianhe-1 (“Harmony of the Heavens”), will be 18.1 meters long and have a mass of 22 MT when launched in 2018. The station’s basic configuration is also expected to consist of two experiment modules, the Wentian and Mengtian, (“Quest for the Heavens” and “Dreaming of the Heavens,” respectively) permanently docked opposite each other in a T-shape structure. Each experiment module will have roughly the same length (14.4 meters) and mass (22 MT). This design is akin to that of Mir, which had a slightly smaller Base Block that launched in February 1986. Once fully assembled, Mir featured five additional modules—each with a mass between 11 and 19.7 MT—for conducting scientific and biological research and observing activity on Earth.
Chinese engineers plan to outfit the Tianhe core with five docking ports, as well as a robotic arm and internal racks for experimentation. The Wentian will also feature modular storage racks and a robotic arm, while the Mengtian will have a docking port to interface with visiting spacecraft, support modules, and repair vehicles. A space telescope, the Xuntian (“Which Takes to the Heavens”), may also launch into orbit near the Chinese Space Station around 2022. It is expected to have a field of view 300 times the size of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
Funding the Manned Space Program
Some Chinese officials have expressed concern about whether Beijing can afford to continue investing heavily in the manned space program. Official data indicate that China spent over 20 billion yuan ($2.90 billion) on the project between 1992 and 2005, and an additional 15 billion yuan ($2.17 billion) between 2005 and 2011. Today, China allocates a greater share of its space budget to manned spaceflight (roughly 33 percent) than any other country. The U.S. follows at around 27 percent.
The OECD estimates that China now has the second-highest combined civil and military space budget in the world. Total government expenditures on space in 2013 were significantly higher in the U.S. ($39.33 billion) than in China ($6.11 billion), but the U.S. budget has contracted in recent years, while China’s has expanded. The Chinese government also plans to boost investment in space science, an area where it has historically lagged behind the United States. In 2015, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration spent over $5 billion on space science while China spent just $110 million. China is expected to narrow this gap in the coming decades, and has already begun working to increase its cooperation with private investors.

At present, it is difficult to estimate the full cost of building and operating a permanent space station. By comparison, the ISS has high annual operating costs (expected to range between $3 and $4 billion through 2024) but is financed by multiple partner countries. For example, NASA is party to an ISS agreement with the Japanese, European, and Canadian space agencies that divides “common systems” operating costs. Within this framework, the U.S. shoulders 76.6 percent of the burden, while the Japanese, European, and Canadian space agencies pay 12.8, 8.3, and 2.3 percent shares, respectively. China has not indicated whether it will seek cost-sharing arrangements with other countries. It has signed space station cooperation agreements with the Russian and European space agencies—and the United Nations—but how much financial support such countries may be willing to provide is unknown.
Rationale for Project 921
High-level political and financial support for China’s space program has increased over the past several decades. The Chinese government noted in its latest white paper on space activities that China should be built “into a space power in all respects” and use its space program to enhance “its overall strength.” In addition, as noted in a report by the U.S.-based Project 2049 Institute, the Chinese government views manned spaceflight as a means of garnering international prestige and boosting national pride. This sentiment was voiced by now-retired Chinese leader Wu Bangguo in 2005 when he noted that the successful Shenzhou-6 mission was of “great significance for elevating China’s prestige in the world and promoting China’s economic, scientific and national defense capabilities, and its national cohesiveness.”
President Xi Jinping touted China’s aspiration to become a world leader in space exploration on China’s first National Day of Space Flight on April 24, 2016. On the same occasion, Xu Dazhe, who serves as the administrator of the China National Space Administration, explained that space industry projects (such as the “third part of manned space flight” and “third part of moon exploration”) outlined in the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) aim to make China a “major power” in the space industry. He added that China has only just begun leveraging its space capabilities.
Progress notwithstanding, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) scholars have argued in the past that the limited scope of China’s current contributions to space science neither measures up to the country’s “status as a great power,” nor supports the goal of “building an innovative nation.” They further emphasize that building a Chinese space station presents unparalleled opportunities for scientific discovery and technological innovation.
Research conducted aboard the ISS promotes scientific inquiry and can result in beneficial “spinoff” technologies. These include advancements in medicine and agriculture, improvements in automobile safety testing, and even the development of a new line of golf clubs. Chinese taikonauts have been systematically denied the opportunity to directly participate in such groundbreaking research, as the U.S. and other space-faring countries have restricted space cooperation with China and limited the transfer of sensitive technologies.
Successfully launching the CSS around the time of the ISS’ deorbiting would lend China its own platform for conducting research and strengthening China’s “independent innovative capabilities.” Operating the station could also enable China to leverage diplomatic opportunities. Countries interested in continued research in space could be compelled to look to the Chinese space program in the absence of other alternatives. The European Space Agency has already begun considering how they might coordinate joint-ventureswith China.
Additionally, China hopes to use its manned space station as a stepping stone to further achievements in space. Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program, noted in 2016 that China’s long-term goals include launching an unmanned mission to Mars by 2020 and establishing a manned research base on the Moon. Lt. Gen. Zhang Yulin, deputy commander of the China Manned Space Program, indicated that China will use the next 15 to 20 years to develop the requisite technical capabilities for conducting manned lunar missions. China leaders have also expressed a desire to send probes the Jupiter to support their efforts to make China into one of the top three space programs in the world by 2030.
