La sonde New Horizons a envoyé quelques photos d'objets de la ceinture de Kuiper. Ce sont les clichés les plus éloignés pris par un engin terrestre.

En 1990, la sonde Voyager 1 prenait une photo de la Terre qui apparaissait comme un point bleu pâle (Pale Blue Dot)sur le cliché, selon l'expression rendue célèbre par l'astronome Carl Sagan et qui a inspiré son livre éponyme. Ce cliché a été réalisé alors que la sonde voguait à 6,06 milliards de kilomètres (40,5 unités astronomiques) de la Terre, ce qui en a fait la photographie la plus lointaine jamais prise (1). Un record qui a tenu 27 ans jusqu'à ce que New Horizons, en décembre 2017, mette en boite une image d'un groupe d'étoiles surnommé "Wishing Well", situé à à 40,9 unités astronomiques de la Terre. Et comme la sonde continue à s'éloigner de nous, chaque nouvelle image qu'elle enverra constituera un nouveau record ! Ainsi ces deux petites photos ci-dessus qui ont été saisies deux heures après les "Wishing Well" et qui représentent deux petits objets de la ceinture de Kuiper, 2012 HZ84 (à gauche) et 2012 HE85 (à droite) détiennent désormais le record, à un peu plus de 40,9 unités astronomiques (New Horizons se déplace à environ 50.000 km/h).

Un réservoir de comètes

La ceinture de Kuiper est une vaste zone en forme d'anneau composée d'une myriade de petits corps et de plusieurs planètes naines dont Pluton. Elle est située au-delà de l'orbite de Neptune entre 30 et 55 unités astronomiques. Gigantesque et quasi inexplorée, cette partie du Système solaire recèle pourtant bien des secrets : c'est un réservoir de comètes périodiques qui abrite des astres probablement contemporains des débuts du Système solaire, tandis que d'autres ont pu s'y former puis migrer secondairement et se rapprocher du Soleil. C'est sans doute le cas de Cérès et de Triton (une lune de Neptune). C'est pour mieux connaître cette ceinture qu'a été conçue la sonde New Horizons qui a déjà exploré Pluton et sa Lune Charon et qui se dirige maintenant vers l'astéroïde 2014 MU69 qu'elle survolera le 1er janvier 2019.

En attendant ce prochain rendez-vous, New Horizons a été placée en "hibernation" fin décembre 2017. La sonde conservera ce statut, qui permet de sauvegarder ses batteries, jusqu'au 4 juin 2018. Elle devrait livrer les premières photographies de sa cible à partir du mois d'août et aura la possibilité d'effectuer d'ultimes corrections de trajectoire à partir du mois d'octobre.

I recently saw a hashtag from a UFO enthusiast on Twitter that said #ProveTheyDontExist. It really got my gears going. You know why? This same logical fallacy has been used to justify all sorts of crazy nonsense for decades. Normally a staple of religious zealotry, the Argument from Ignorance has infected the fields of science, medicine, mental health, and just about every other academic thought pool. It’s also made its way into UFOlogy.

The Argument from Ignorance

The center of the earth is made of cheeseburgers. I know this is true. I know because mankind has yet to prove that the center of the earth is not made of cheeseburgers.

The above statement should seem preposterous to you. Not only is it highly unlikely that cheeseburgers exist at the center of the earth, humans have yet to explore the center of the earth to find out exactly what it contains. Sure we can make educated guesses based on our understanding of science, but until we actually drill down, we’ll never know for sure.

Now look at this next example:

Aliens built the great pyramids. We don’t know definitively how humans might have done it, so it must have been aliens.

See anything familiar? While it might be a bit more subtle than claiming the center of the earth is comprised of cheeseburgers, it’s just as logically errant. One could replace the word aliens in that statement with just about anything else and it would be just as untrue. In fact, the Ancient Alien theory resembles a religion more than science or archaeology.

Now, read this:

I saw an object in the sky that wasn’t a bird or a plane, or anything else I know of. Therefore, it must be an alien-controlled spaceship.

This one really hits close to home because so many people I know have taken this position. And this statement is at the crux of many UFO claims. But here’s the thing – if you saw an unidentified flying object, it makes zero sense to follow that statement with an identification because it’s unidentified. This statement is, in fact, no less ludicrous than the center of the earth being made of cheeseburgers.

Absence of an Explanation is Never Equivalent to Proof

Does this make you uncomfortable? It should. And there is a good reason. The charge that alien life is visiting our planet is extraordinary and, as a result, must require extraordinary proof.

Credibility, Credibility, Credibility

One of the primary complaints of UFO researchers and enthusiasts is that they aren’t taken seriously by mainstream science. But when you look at some of the most popular thought-processes exhibited by them, it’s pretty easy to understand why.

In order to gain respect from the scientific community, UFOlogists must illustrate that they are credible. A researcher must be able to exercise solid and valid logic when making conclusions. Those conclusions must be drawn from the actual evidence, not a lack thereof. Similarly, they must also exercise the same logic when sharing dubious news stories and articles with questionable sources.

Researchers need to spend the energy searching for the truth of each sighting, not the validation of that which they wish to be true. Recognizing the Argument from Ignorance is the first step in this process. UFOlogists can make great changes by learning to filter out claims that use the proof of nonexistence as a requirement.

The dinosaur-murdering asteroid maybe also triggered an underwater volcano meltdown

The cataclysmic asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs might have also triggered massive volcanic eruptions deep beneath the ocean, new research says. It’s yet another way the extraterrestrial impact could have killed off more than 70 percent of life on Earth — that is, if the timing isn’t just a coincidence.

Roughly 66 million years ago, a 6-mile-wide asteroid crashed into Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula — causing a massive, worldwide earthquake. That Earth-shaking impact might have made underwater volcanoes spit up magma even more ferociously than usual, according to a study published today in the journal Science Advances. These events might have added to the asteroid’s apocalyptic aftershocks — which include wildfires, global cooling, and acid rain — that caused the mass extinction of roughly three quarters of Earth’s species, including dinos.

The findings back up earlier reports of more intense volcanic eruptions in India also roughly 66 million years ago. But other scientists are skeptical about the link between the asteroid and the underwater volcanic eruptions, because the paper doesn’t propose exactly how they happened. “Why would that much earthquake energy cause eruptions like that?” says Sean Gulick, a geophysicist at the University of Texas at Austin who did not participate in the study. “It’s an interesting idea, but where’s the model that backs up the physics that would allow that to happen?”

For decades, scientists have been arguing about whether volcanoes or an asteroid caused the massive climate shifts that spelled doom for the dinosaurs. The evidence supporting the asteroid hypothesis kept mounting. But then, a few years ago, scientists at UC Berkeley asked, why pick one flavor of apocalypse? Both might have been on the menu 66 million years ago: the asteroid, for instance, might have intensified eruptions from a particularly volcanic region in India called the Deccan Traps. So Earth scientists Joseph Byrnes at the University of Minnesota and Leif Karlstrom at the University of Oregon went looking for more signs of ancient eruptions, in easy-to-spot stretches of the seafloor.

Gaps in the Earth’s crust called mid-ocean ridges weep magma to create the ocean floor, churning out material at a pretty even pace of up to several inches each year. That allowed Karlstrom and Byrnes to pinpoint the sections produced roughly 66 million years ago. But searching for signs of volcanic eruptions isn’t as easy as looking for bumpy tracts of hardened lava on the bottom of the ocean. “It’s hard to get to the sea floor because the ocean is sitting on it,” Byrnes says. Instead, the team turned to satellite maps of the peaks and valleys in the ocean’s surface. These bumpy spots produced by, say, an underwater volcano belching out magma have more mass, and therefore a bigger gravitational pull, than valleys or flat regions. So underwater peaks pull more ocean around them, creating wrinkles in the surface that can be seen from space.

Karlstrom and Byrnes found two bumps in stretches of the Earth’s crust in the Pacific and Indian Oceans that were produced within a million years of that 66 million-year-old impact. These bumps were made up of between 23,000 and 240,000 cubic miles (100,000 to 1 million cubic kilometers) of magma, Byrnes says — which means that the mid-ocean ridges had suddenly started erupting more intensely than at any other point in 100 million years. “No normal process makes those bumps, otherwise we’d see it more than once,” he says. ”If it’s just a random burp of magma, it happened at a very coincidental time.”

Byrnes and Karlstrom suspect that when the infamous asteroid crashed into the Yucatán, it hit the Earth like the clapper on a bell. The impact sent powerful vibrations ringing through the Earth at roughly the intensity of a magnitude 10 or 11 quake. This massive jolt might have made these mid-ocean ridges squirt out more magma, the authors say — although the exact mechanisms remain a mystery.

“It validates our prediction that other magma systems were affected, too — which is kind of cool!” says Paul Renne, a planetary scientist at UC Berkeley who co-authored a paper about those intense eruptions in India 66 million years ago. His team proposed that the seismic shakeup from the asteroid’s impact could have made magma fizz out of volcanoes “kind of like when you shake a can of coke,” he says.

But Gulick isn’t as convinced. For one thing, the dates are a little fuzzy — the increased volcanic activity the study reports happened within a million years of when the asteroid touched down in the Yucatán: that could have been before the impact, or long after. “So how do we really know that something within those million years is directly related to an event that happened on a specific day?” Gulick says. “The resolution isn’t good enough to say that.” He also wishes the study had been clearer about exactly how the asteroid’s impact increased volcanic eruptions at these mid-ocean ridges. “It’s an interesting observation, but I’m a little skeptical.”

Byrnes says that’s a fair critique. But, he adds, they only see the evidence of increased eruptions at one point in time. “And it just so happens it lines up with the impact’s age,” he says. In the future, he and Karlstrom intend to investigate how these eruptions may have caused changes in ocean chemistry. But for now, they’re excited by the responses to the research they’ve been getting from the rest of the scientific community. “You get really good at failing and bouncing back from that,” Karlstrom says. “But every now and then when something does work, it’s nice to see that people are also excited about it.”

A video shared widely since mid-Jan 2018 purports to show a Vertical UFO Alien Spotted Over Mexico. Interestingly, the Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) was shown as first ‘Alien sighting’ of 2018. The flying object seen in the video was in fact not identified, but the claim that it belongs to Aliens is certainly not true.

The video shows a driver capturing on camera an upright object flying in the air over sky in Mexico. YouTube channel Virality TV shared the video as first UFO sighting in Mexico, suggesting Alien watch. However, Facebook user Ufologo Pedro Ramírez, who calls himself UFOlogist, shared it in early Jan 2018. As a matter of fact, he suggested the tubular UFO hovering over Mexican sky is a proof of Aliens watching our activity in space.

Not Alien

Firstly, the vertical UFO object was captured on camera from a moving vehicle. So, it gives a false impression that the object is flying fast in sky. Once the video became popular online, YouTube user Louis aguilar posted a video showing similar object flying in San Antonio, Texas.

Intrigued viewers suggested the UFO in Mexico could be a drone in the US border region, a weather balloon or a man testing some kind of Jet Pack. As you can see in the images, the shape of the UFO remains same through the flight in the first place. Likewise, it resembles the shape of a Stormtrooper Helium Balloon, which are widely available as novelty gifts. In the video below, you can see couple of such balloons flying in sky. Furthermore, it was new year time, so it is probably the case.

Screaming Mummy Finally Released From Its Storage Room

Sorry for that tabloid-y headline but it’s exactly what happened. A mummy called the “Screaming Mummy” because its face was preserved in a picture of agony has been removed from storage and put on display this week at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo for the first time since it was moved there for safekeeping. The exhibition coincides with a definitive revelation as to the reason behind the mummy’s scream.

‘The gruesome mummy of Unknown Man E, also known as the “Screaming Mummy,” has long puzzled scholars. Such unusual mummification has perplexed Egyptologists and no one has succeeded in knowing the story behind such a mummy until the launch of the Egyptian Mummy Project several years ago under my direction to create a complete database of forensic information related to the mummy collection at the Egyptian Museum.”

Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, the former Minister of Antiquities who led the Egyptian Mummies Project, told Al-Ahram Weekly(more pictures here) what the researchers have found after more detailed studies of its skin and a new analysis of its DNA.

Deir el-Bahari

But first, a little background.

In 1881, a tomb-robber named Abd el-Rassul claimed to have discovered a cache of mummified remains and funeral artifacts in a tomb next to Deir el-Bahri, in the Theban Necropolis (later research shows it may have been found 10 years earlier). After realizing it was a royal tomb, he and a brother plundered it until being caught selling the artifacts on the black market. Egyptologist were brought in and performed a different kind of plundering – they quickly (within 48 hours) removed the mummies and artifacts from the tomb (now called TT 320) without recording their placements, damaging much in the process.

By far the strangest discovery in TT 320 was the screaming mummy or “Unknown Man E.” Initial analysis showed that the body had been embalmed quickly without the standard removal of its brain and internal organs. The cedar coffin appeared to have been roughly widened to fit the body, suggesting the family had some reason to bury it quickly. What was it?

According to Hawass, the body was wrapped in sheepskin, symbolizing that the person was considered to be impure. Its hands and feet were tied with leather straps. In fact, it was not even mummified – the body was merely dried, then had resin poured into its open mouth, preserving the scream look. The biggest discovery was marks around the neck — evidence that the person died by hanging.

Those marks, coupled with the DNA analysis showing that the Screaming Mummy was closely related to Ramses III, a conspiracy story detailed in the famous Harem Conspiracy Papyrus (on display at the Museo Egizio in Turin) and the disgraceful way the body was preserved and buried convinced Hawass that Unknown Man E was indeed Prince Pentawere, the son who plotted the murder of his father Ramses III and was sentenced to death for his role in the conspiracy which was led by his mother, Tiye, who hoped to make him pharaoh instead of Ramses IV. While it’s now known that Pentawere died by hanging, it’s not evident if it was by execution or by suicide.

Unlike his tomb, the case appears to be airtight that the Screaming Mummy is Prince Pentawere. And yes, Prince Penteware and the Screaming Mummies would be a great name for a band.

De officiële naam van het vliegtuig luidt ’Quiet Supersonic Transport (QueSST). Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden vliegt het toestel sneller dan het geluid, 1.700 kilometer per uur om precies te zijn. Bovendien is NASA erin geslaagd de supersonische knal te dempen. Wanneer een vliegtuig door de geluidsmuur vliegt, gaat dat gepaard met een knal en bij de Concorde leidde die vaak tot geluidsoverlast.

Een woordvoerder van NASA liet eerder al weten dat de organisatie ernaar streeft om de supersonische knal zo te dempen dat hij nog amper merkbaar is voor de mensen op de grond. “De knal moet even stil worden als een verre donderslag of als het geluid van een buurman die de deur van zijn auto toeslaat.”

Vliegtuigbouwer Lockheed Martin maakte al een eerste ontwerp voor de QueSST, maar NASA spoort andere bedrijven aan om ook een ontwerp in te dienen.

Als alles volgens plan verloopt moet de QueSST in 2021 zijn eerste vlucht maken. Het toestel geldt vooral als voorbeeld voor vliegtuigbouwers, die in de toekomst snellere lijnvliegtuigen zullen bouwen. “De QueSST zal Amerikaanse bedrijven aanzetten om snellere commerciële vliegtuigen te bouwen, wat zal leiden tot meer jobs en kortere reistijden”, luidt het bij het Amerikaanse ministerie van Begroting, dat dit jaar liefst 19,9 miljard dollar (16,1 miljard euro) uittrok voor NASA. Dat is 500 miljoen dollar meer dan vorig jaar.

‘Schreeuwende’ mummie is al jaren een raadsel, nu zijn archeologen een stapje dichter bij de waarheid - HLN.be

Verschillende theorieën werden geopperd over de schijnbaar pijnlijke dood van de man. De meest populaire is dat het om prins Pentewere, de zoon van farao Ramses III en een van zijn vrouwen Tiye, gaat. Die had het plan om zijn vader te vermoorden om zo de troon te kunnen bestijgen, maar die poging mislukte. Daarom moest de man voor de rechter verschenen. Zijn straf? Om de een of andere reden was er iemand die er zeker van wilde zijn dat hij niet in het hiernamaals nog een leven zou hebben. Maar dan was er een andere persoon die wel om deze persoon gaf en heeft geprobeerd te voorkomen dat zijn lichaam zou vergaan.”

Professor Zahi Hawass, voormalig hoofd van de Egyptische Hoge Raad van Antiquiteiten, zegt dat de kans groot is dat de mummie een prins was die zijn familie ten schande heeft gebracht. Hij werd namelijk begraven met andere leden van de koninklijke familie. Maar hij was bedekt met schapenhuid, dit was in de tijd van de oude Egyptenaren een teken dat je niet ‘schoon’ was, dat deze persoon iets slechts in zijn leven had gedaan. We hebben nog nooit een mummie als deze gezien, die zichtbaar aan het lijden is. Deze abnormale gelaatsuitdrukking vertelt ons dat er iets gebeurd is, maar we weten niet wat.” 

De schreeuwende mummie wordt nu voor het eerst in het Egyptisch museum in Caïro tentoongesteld.

For an object that wasn’t discovered until it was already on its way back to wherever it came from, Oumuamua has certainly garnered a lot of publicity. First, of course, it was determined that the cigar-shaped thing was the first known interstellar object to pass through our Solar System. Arguments about what kind of object it is were seemingly settled when astronomers determined it was an asteroid, not a comet, but a strange asteroid with an icy center. That hasn’t pacified the small but vocal group that still believes it’s an abandoned space ship/robotic craft from another civilization. It also didn’t explain why Oumuamua was tumbling nor why it had such an odd surface.

Since it blew by, a team of researchers at Queen’s University Belfast have been studying Oumuamua and think they’ve solved at least some of its mysteries. Led by Dr. Wes Fraser, they analyzed light reflected from the cuts and angles on its surface and, like investigators at the scene of a hit-and-run auto accident, were able to determine that Oumuamua also collided with something and that impact severely damaged its surface and disrupted its rotation as it shoved the planetesimal out of its own solar system and on a path to ours.

“While we don’t know the cause of the tumbling, we predict that it was most likely sent tumbling by an impact with another planetesimal in its system, before it was ejected into interstellar space.”

Their research, published in the journal Nature Astronomy, shows that Oumuamua is spinning “chaotically,” a condition generally caused by a violent impact. Their model indicates this could have occurred billions of years ago and it may take billions more before the shaking and tumbling stops and Oumuamua returns to looking like a tight Nick Foles spiral pass (sorry Tom Brady).

Like the mix of scratched paint, paint from the other car, bare metal and rust that you see after a car accident, the collision may also explain the mysterious variety of colors – from dark red to “dirty snow” — on Oumuamua.

“Most of the surface reflects neutrally but one of its long faces has a large red region. This argues for broad compositional variations, which is unusual for such a small body.”

Knowing all of this will help astronomers in their quest to find more small, dark, chaotic objects with violent pasts like Oumuamua. This is starting to sound like a soap opera, a murder mystery and a sci-fi thriller rolled into one.

Former Head Of Secret X-Files Says the US Has More Radar Footage Of UFOs

The public can expect more compelling video footage to come as what the former head of a top-secret Pentagon real-life X-Files probe has promised.

Luis Elizondo led the £16 million Advanced Aerial Threat Identification Program (AATIP) of the US Department of Defense.

After resigning from the department in October to join a UFO research group, Luis released two videos caught on US Navy pilot radar cameras.

He pointed out that the craft in the video moved in ways that defied physics.

US Navy pilots filmed one of the military radar videos in November 2004 off the coast of San Diego. The pilots described observing various UFOs.

The bizarre case became known as the Nimitz UFO Incident.

However, sceptics have been saying that the video only involved a wrongly identified plane. It prompted Mr Elizondo to reveal there is more to come, including encounters with unknown technology that is more advanced than anything in the military around the world, which documented in video recordings. He said that around 24 other UFO videos are being declassified for release in the coming months to the public.

Answering back at those who claimed they only showed planes, he said that the object came into a near hover state and took off suddenly over the horizon in just two seconds, so it could not be just a plane. He added that it was not also an IR glare or IR fuzz because you cannot lock radar on it.

The Mysterious 12,000-Year-Old Dropa Stones, Evidence Of Ancient Alien Contact?

More than 80 years ago, Chinese archaeologists discovered a cave system with chilling skeletons with elongated heads, a cosmic map, and more than 700 strange discs…

The mysterious discovery was allegedly made in 1930 when Chi Pu Tei, an archeology professor at Peking University and his students were on an expedition to explore a series of caves in the inaccessible mountains of Bayan Kara Ula, near Tibet, which were supposedly carved artificially in a system of underground tunnels and pantries.

According to these events, it is said that professor Chi Pu Tei and his students found tombs with skeletons of 1.38 m (4 ft 6 in) in height buried inside them. The skeletons would have had abnormally large heads and small, thin and fragile bodies. In addition to the skeletal remains, professor Chi Pu Tei and his students discovered countless other items.

It was suggested that these skeletal remains could have belonged to an unknown species of a mountain gorilla, but Professor Chi Pu Tei did not agree and responded: “Whoever heard about monkeys burying each other?”

There were no epitaphs in the tombs, but instead, they found more than 700 stone discs (“Dropa Stones”) with 8 cm holes in diameter at their centers.

On the walls, carvings of the rising sun, the moon, stars, the earth, mountains, and dotted lines linking the earth with the sky were found.

The discs and the cave paintings are said to date approximately 12,000 years. Their whereabouts today remains a mystery.

All of this raised a great mystery: Who were these mysterious beings? What were the enigmatic discs, and where did the star maps carved on the cave walls lead to?

Dropa Discs

Each stone disc, reportedly, would have been inscribed with two thin grooves that spiral from the edge to the central hole.

It is believed that the enigmatic Dropa Discs and other items discovered during the expedition were kept at the Peking University for 20 years.

All attempts to decipher the writing on the Dropa Discs were useless.

However, the discs were examined by Dr. Tsum Um Nui, in Beijing around 1958, who concluded that each groove consisted of a set of tiny hieroglyphs of unknown origin.

The rows were so small that a magnifying glass was necessary to see them clearly. Many of the hieroglyphics were worn out by erosion.

When Dr. Tsum allegedly deciphered the symbols, he revealed how the ancient writings tell a story of an otherworldly encounter where an ancient alien ship crash landed on Earth some 12,000 years ago.

According to Tsum Um Nui, one of the hieroglyphic lines read: “The Dropas came down from the clouds in their aircraft. Our men, women, and children hid in the caves ten times before sunrise. When at last they understood the sign language of the Dropas, they realized that the newcomers had peaceful intentions.”

Another section reads “regret” of the inhabitants of the mountain (tribe of the Ham) because the aliens had crashed their ship and could not build another to return to their planet.

Dr. Tsum reportedly published his discovery in 1962.

However, he would have been mocked to such an extent that he left China in exile moving to Japan, where he would later die.

It is said that the Beijing Pre-History Academy would never have allowed him to publish or discuss his find again.

Furthermore, due to the fact that “Tsum Um Nui” is not a real Chinese name, some critics suggest that the man never existed.

Others claim that Tsum Um Nui is a Japanese name adapted to the Chinese language. In addition to his theories about the Dropa, there is no further evidence that he ever existed.

In 1974, Ernst Wegerer, an Austrian engineer, photographed two discs that matched the descriptions of the Dropa Stones. He was on a guided tour of the Bampo Museum in Xian, when he saw the stone discs.

He said he observed a hole in the center of each disk and hieroglyphs in grooves, partly crumbled, like a spiral. It is said that when he enquired about the discs the manager could tell him nothing, but permitted him to take one in his hand and photograph them. He claims that in his photos the hieroglyphs cannot be seen as they have been hidden by the flash from the camera and have also deteriorated. By 1994, the discs and the manager had disappeared from the museum.

Critics largely rejected the story of the Dropa discs, arguing that it was a mixture of deception and urban legend.

For example, writer David Richie mentions that these stories intrigued Gordon Chreighton, a member of the Royal Society of Anthropology and the Royal Society of Geography.

In the investigation, Chreighton considered the allegations about the Dropa “unfounded,” and detailed his findings in an article for the Flying Saucer Review.

It is not easy to find credible evidence to show that the Dropa Stones exist or have existed in the past.

Defenders of the story claim that it is the result of a social disruption caused by the Chinese Cultural Revolution and a cover-up conspired by the authorities of that country.

However, this goes beyond China; since those who oppose the history of the Dropa, claim that it is a deception of Erich von Däniken.

Power Sources Of The Past: Are these 2,000-Year-Old Artifacts Ancient Batteries?

In 1936, during excavations on a hill in Kujut Rabua, a village southeast of Baghdad (Iraq), workers of the Iraqi State Railway Department discovered an old grave covered with a stone slab.

For two months, the Iraqi Department of Antiquities extracted a total of 613 beads, clay figurines, chiseled bricks and other pieces.

They were dated between 248 BC and 226 AD.

They also found unique terracotta pots, shaped like a vase and of a light yellowish color, containing a cylinder made of a rolled copper sheet, which houses a single iron rod. The container measured 14 cm high by 4 cm in diameter, while the copper cylinder measured 9 cm high by 2.6 cm in diameter. At the top, the iron rod is isolated from the copper by bitumen, with plugs or stoppers, and both rod and cylinder fit snugly inside the opening of the jar.

In 1939 German archaeologist Wilhelm König, then in charge of the State Museum Laboratory in Baghdad, identified the mysterious artifacts as a probable ancient electric battery.

He described his finding in 9 Jahre Iraq, published in Austria in 1940.

Respecters analyzed the alleged batters trying to prove they were really used as such. During one occasion, an electrolyte was placed inside it, connected to a lamp, which eventually turned on. The official report that was written later said that this object behaved exactly like a modern electric battery.

Once he returned to the Berlin Museum, König tried finding more similar items and found cylinders, rods and similar artifacts from Mesopotamia; all of them with thin iron and bronze rods. It seemed to him that these “batteries” could have been joined in series (one after the other) to increase the voltage for a greater power output.

If these mystery artifacts were really batteries, it would change a lot about ancient civilizations, and their capabilities and level of technology.

After World War II, Willard Gray, an electronics engineer at the High Voltage Laboratory of the General Electric Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, manufactured a duplicate of these batteries and filled them with copper sulfate ( although he stated that another liquid electrolyte could have been used within the reach of the inhabitants of Iraq at the time, like ordinary grape juice).

To the surprise of many, the battery operated and generated between one and two volts.

As noted by Dennielle Downs, and Ava Meyerhoff from the Smith College, “There is no written record as to the exact function of the jar, but the best guess is that it was a type of battery. Scientists believe the batteries (if that is their correct function) were used to electroplate items such as putting a layer of one metal (gold) onto the surface of another (silver), a method still practiced in Iraq today.”

Despite the fact there is evidence that the enigmatic objects could have produced electricity, the real purpose of the ‘Baghdad Batteries’ remains a mystery for many scholars.

The Discovery Channel’s series ‘Myth Busters’ built replicas of the jars to see if it was indeed possible for them to have been used for electroplating or electrostimulation in ancient times.

On MythBusters’ 29th episode (March 23, 2005), the crew behind the series produced ten hand-made terracotta jars fitted to act as batteries.

Lemon juice was chosen as the electrolyte to activate the electrochemical reaction between the copper and iron.

Connected in series, the batteries produced 4 volts of electricity.

When linked in series, the cells had sufficient power to electroplate a small token.

Welcome to another edition of “Celebrity UFO Spotting,” where contestants try to figure out if a famous person’s unidentified flying object or ET sighting report is real or a desperate attempt to garner publicity for a new movie, book or album. Today’s celebrity is Kim Wilde. If you said “Who?” or “I didn’t know she was still around,” that’s a point in favor of “Must have a new album coming out.” See how this works?

In an interview in the current edition of Attitude magazine, Kim Wilde reveals that she had her UFO encounter in 2009.

“There were a couple of massive lights just above the clouds, going backwards and forwards in an extraordinary way. Quite a lot of people witnessed them, it made the local papers.”

Well, according to a UK UFO report, on June 26, 2009, a UFO was reported in Hertfordshire where Kim lived at the time. One point for Kim.

“When you see something as extraordinary and maybe extra-terrestrial like that you’re never quite the same. I believe they’re here already or visiting, watching us. I haven’t gone loopy, I just can’t stop thinking about it.”

That’s a common reaction among people who have witnessed UFOs.

Another point for Kim.

“I said to my husband that maybe the captain was a big Kim Wilde fan and wanted to know where I live. I’m worried he’s going to beam me up and I’ll have to sing “Kids in America” to him for the rest of my life. I’m worried they’re going to come back and take me away.”

Oh, Kim, you were doing so well! Getting a plug in for your biggest hit sounds like you’re promoting something. And … she is! Her new album, with her first new songs in 22 years, is called “Here Come The Aliens” and is scheduled to be released on March 16. After that, she hits the concert stage with a European tour called … you guessed it … the Here Come the Aliens Tour. Sorry, Kim, that’s three points to the other side for plugging an album, plugging a tour and referring to aliens in the names of both.

There’s something else strange about Wilde’s UFO story. In an interview in OK! Magazine in 2015, Kim talks about the same UFO sighting, only this time connects it to something significant that happened the day before … Michael Jackson’s death.

“It was 26 June, the day after Michael Jackson died, and me and my mate were in the garden and we saw bright lights in the sky … They were about 20 times the size of an aeroplane … It was so huge, two of them, going zig-zag for 10 minutes.”

Did you think the captain of the ship was coming to abduct you, Kim?

“It was the day after Michael Jackson died and I thought, ‘He is coming back to haunt me!’

That may have been what Kim actually felt if and when she saw the UFO, since she didn’t have anything to plug in 2015. Sorry, Kim … two more points to the other side for changing your story just to plug a CD and dumping a really good about Michael Jackson.
