Ex-roker sjouwt ziek hart mee naar parlement
Ex-roker Mohi Waihi heeft zijn zieke hart, dat in 2005 vervangen werd
door een gezond exemplaar, meegetroond naar het Nieuw-Zeelandse
parlement om er een commissie te woord te staan die een onderzoek voert
naar de tabaksindustrie.
Waihi, een Maori, vertelde de commissie dat hij op zijn 19de begon te
roken en sindsdien al vijf hartaanvallen te verduren kreeg. In 2005
kreeg hij een bij een transplantatie het hart van een 40-jarige vrouw.
"Ik ben heel blij dat ik hier ben", aldus Waihi, die zijn zieke hart
meehad om zijn woorden kracht bij te zetten. Zowat 40 procent
van de 500.000 Maori's op Nieuw-Zeeland rookt. Dat percentage ligt
dubbel zo hoog als het percentage voor de totale bevolking. (afp/tw)
