Celebrities Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin is vandaag overleden. Ze vocht al jaren tegen kanker en was al enkele dagen ernstig ziek. Franklin werd 76 jaar.
De zangeres scoorde wereldhits met nummers als ‘Respect’ en ‘(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman’. Ze stierf in haar eigen huis, in Detroit, waar ze verzorgd werd door een thuisverpleegster. Haar familie en meest hechte vrienden waren bij haar toen ze het leven liet.
De laatste jaren was ze erg zwak, en trad ze nog maar zelden live op. Haar laatste performance dateert van november vorig jaar, op het AMFAR evenement van Elton John.
Franklin werd geboren in 1942. Ze begon met zingen in de kerk van haar vader, en maakte zo veel indruk als Gospel-zangeres dat ze in de jaren ,60 een platencontract van Columbia kreeg aangeboden.
