Vandalen richten ravage aan in Australische zoo
Vandalen hebben deze week een ravage aangericht in een dierentuin op het Australische eiland Tasmaniƫ. Negen vogels werden afgeslacht en ongeveer 60 vogels, kangoeroes en apen zijn verdwenen, zegt de eigenaar van de zoo, Dick Warren, tegen de Australische zender ABC.
De vandalen braken in hokken in en vingen de negen vogels, waaronder een zeldzame parkiet, smeten ze dood en sloegen de kop eraf. Onder de verdwenen dieren zijn twee zeldzame parkieten en vijf quolls, een vleesetend buideldier dat alleen in Australiƫ en op het eiland Nieuw-Guinea voorkomt. De populatie Tasmaanse duivels heeft geen schade opgelopen. Die buideldieren zijn door een besmettelijke ziekte in het wild vrijwel uitgestorven.
De dierentuin staat bekend om zijn fokprogramma's met bedreigde diersoorten. Volgens een woordvoerster heeft het vandalisme grote schade aan dat programma aangericht. (br.hln)
