21 december is begonnen, maar Kiribati bestaat - waarschijnlijk - nog
Op verschillende plekken op de wereld - ver ten oosten van ons - is 21 december al begonnen, maar berichten over het einde van de aardbol komen er tot op dit moment nog niet vandaan.
Om 11 uur Belgische tijd begon de dag die volgens sommigen het einde der tijden zou inluiden al op exotische eilandenrijkjes als Samoa en Kiribati. 21 december 2012, zo menen doemdenkers, werd door de Maya's berekend als de dag waarop er een einde zou komen aan al het leven op aarde.
Maar persbureaus, twitteraars en lokale media maken vooralsnog geen melding van ongewone feiten. Daarbij dient wel te worden aangetekend dat wanneer al het leven er wel zou zijn vernietigd, berichten daarover lastig de rest van de wereld kunnen bereiken.
Als eerste grote landen zijn om 12 uur Belgische tijd Nieuw-Zeeland en het uiterste oosten van Rusland aan de beurt. Pas zaterdagmiddag 12 uur weten we zeker of de gehele wereld de vermeende apocalyps heeft overleefd. Dan is het ook op de Amerikaanse Midway-eilanden 22 december. (br.hln)
